T

he Marbella Club Hotel, Golf Resort and Spa has been popular since the 1950s for its atmosphere, personality and great story which sets it apart from the rest. The history and old school aristocratic charm still permeates all the hotel’s facilities, rooms and grounds today. It has been recently been voted Best Hotel in Europe by the International Hotel Awards proving its enduring appeal. The story of the Marbella Club began in 1946 when Prince Max von Hohenlohe decided to visit his eccentric cousin in an obscure coastal village in the South of Spain. At this time Marbella was far from the international destination it is today – there were more donkeys than cars on the roads, fishing was the main industry and transport links were terrible. Never the less, Prince Max fell for the sleepy charm, stunning countryside and sparkling sea and asked his son Prince Alfonso to buy some land the following year. What started out as a winter hideaway for the family, turned into a small hotel and Marbella Club Hotel officially opened its doors in 1954.

8

Prince Alfonso was passionate about this location and extolled its virtues to his huge network of royalty, movie stars and the rich and famous.

This combination of features attracted a crowd which would become known as the jet-set. They included many famous faces such as; Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, the Duke of Windsor, Sean Connery, Gunthar Sachs and Adnan Khashoggi, who really put Marbella and the hotel on the map.

He created a hotel which was rustic but displayed understated luxury, unrivalled customer service, a country club feel and legendary parties, which was totally different from anything on offer at the time.

With more than 60 years as one of the Leading Hotels of the World and with careful refurbishment and enhancement, you can still feel the history and see Prince Alfonso’s influence everywhere you look.

Franck Sibille, Area General Manager guides this hotel, ensuring the hotel doesn’t lose its charm and identity, whilst it continues to modernize to suit modern travelers’ tastes. Set in beautiful landscaped gardens, this resort now has 84 rooms, 37 suites and 14 villas; all decorated with the most exclusive Andalucian interior designs and six first-class bars and restaurants to choose from. The Grill has just celebrated its 50th Anniversary and continues to delight diners with delicious meats, fish and fine dining cuisine in a romantic atmosphere.

A Hotel Full of History & Old School Glamour

It has a Thalasso Spa with a dynamic salt-water pool, saunas and steam baths and twelve treatment rooms. There’s a magnificent 18 hole golf course, designed by Dave Thomas, a picturesque 9 hole course, El Higueral, and riding stables located in the foothills of Benahavis. The hotel continues to look forward and has managed to embrace its history and celebrate it, without getting stuck in the past. The Marbella Club is unique in its layout and design, recreating the style of an Andalucian village nestled amongst lush gardens. The mantra has always been quality and not quantity and the buildings were designed to not reach above the tree tops. There are a mix of rooms, suites and villas with each block having their own style and finish. Tucked away is the villa which houses the kids’ club and the stunning event venue Villa del Mar. Paths lead guests through the gardens down to the sea to the Thalasso Spa, Beach Club and beach area.

The gardens are one of the defining features of the Marbella Club Hotel and which gives the property a sense of space and tranquility. Count Rudi, General Manager for over 20 years and Ambassador for the hotel comments “It is the gardens that do so much to give the Club its special character; the plants like a big family. For me the gardens were always the true “luxury” of the Marbella Club.”

The Architecture and Design of the Marbella Club Hotel Golf Resort and Spa

The public areas are large and spacious using luxurious materials such as marble, velvet and mahogany. The design gives the feel of a large stately home in order to retain a link with its history as a private residence. The Refurbishment of The Champagne Room In the Autumn of 2011 the legendary Champagne Room reopened after an extensive restoration, to be reinstated as the place for the international jet-set to enjoy evening cocktails, sensational events and world class entertainment. Inspired by the illustrious character of the hotel and the original legend behind the Champagne Room, Jean Pierre Martel, the mastermind behind the redesign says, “the new Champagne Room radiates modern luxury, while at the same time evoking the ambiance of the ´Golden Ages,’ creating a dramatic juxtaposition between past and present.”

The Champagne Room first opened as premiere bar at the Marbella Club Throughout the last half century such famous guests as Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly, the Kennedys, Lionel Richie and Enrique Iglesias, to name but a few, have danced the night away in the hotel´s bar. Martel´s redesign pays tribute to the bar´s rich history through a black and white photo montage that celebrates the many royal, film, musical and sports stars who have visited the bar. Fine touches such as gold leaf ceilings, art deco inspired sculptures, contrasting rich colors, leather accents and bespoke furnishings will create a glamorous yet inviting setting. Historic elements like the grand fireplace and cocktail bar were restored while adding fashionable fixtures and state-of-the-art technology. The ´piece de resistance´ is the Grand Piano, which sits center stage and act as the focal point during shows, events and cabarets.

TESTIMONIAL “The Maison Afrique team can take any average room and transform the space into an inviting salon, den or office, because they can acutely visualise proportion, not only the objects that occupy the space & fill it. Only a true interior artist can make a drab space into a magic, cosy and elegant area. Each change, no matter how seemingly small, builds on previous adjustments and before you know it - voila - a new home! - Karen.S, Marbella

frican Interior Design

Bring

the magnificence of the African landscape into your home. African interior design styles are a great way of bringing the unique landscape and experience of Africa, right into your home. Thoughts of Africa conjure images of adventure –the massive landscapes, stretching out way to the horizon, deserts, jungles, grassy plains, and probably the most magnificent sunsets in the whole world, add to that the game reserves and, of course the animals, not to mention the unique, colorful culture…. It is no surprise then that during these gloomy autumn and winter months we look to the vibrant colours and textiles of Africa for warmth and inspiration. Here we look at how to recreate the magic & beauty of Africa in the comfort of your own home... Why choose African Interior Design? African interior design is a popular look, but still unusual enough to add great interest to your room. It is actually a really great look to live with, and not at all difficult to achieve… Walls and Colour African interior design is a simple, classic look. Your room does not need to be too cluttered or fussy. Just choose simple, flat walls, in a plain colour, for the basis of your scheme. Warm neutrals are good – creams, beiges, coffee, taupe…Or you can add some soft, warm touches together with lighter creams for a pale look For accents and focal walls choose a darker, warm colour. Deep, rich colours like chocolate brown, or reds, yellows and oranges of the African sunset are ideal choices. This is a striking look for a focal wall (or all over if you are feeling bold). Include an African style feature artwork to add a touch of drama. Green is also a possibility - great if you want to go for a more jungle inspired look, or a style more reminiscent of the grassy plains. If you fancy going for greens, try not to mix it with reds and oranges, as this does need to be a simple look.

16

Perfect Homes

Flooring African interior design is a look that gets its strongest inspiration from nature – so natural floor coverings are a must: Plain, hard wood flooring is best – choose teak, mahogany, bamboo or even pine. If you want a really unusual wood, which fits the African interior design look, go for zebrano, it is really beautiful - and very unusual. To add warmth a rug is ideal, stick to subtle neutral coloured woollen rugs in cream, beiges and browns. Animal skins (or faux/reproductions) are also a possibility, but do take care that you don’t overdo these, and end up with a fussy, tacky looking effect. If you want something a little more exciting on your floor, go for a woven rug in typical, tribal African designs – very eye-catching!

Furniture Furniture for the African interior design look should be simple, solid dark wood. Choose mahogany, teak or walnut for preference, and go for rustic and chunky styles. Sofas and upholstery could be a beautiful, dark brown leather, or cream/neutral linens or cottons. Generally, you should steer clear of patterns, and try to avoid encasing all your upholstery in animal print. There is plenty of room in an African interior design scheme for animal print, but I think it is best suited to accessories such as the zebra rug!

Windows Simple, unadorned windows will give you the best effect for your African inspired scheme. Choose dark wood plantation shutters, or dark wood or slatted Venetian blinds. Floaty white nets or voiles at the window can also give a wonderful, light and airy effect, while giving the impression. Don’t just stick to using these at the windows - if you have a four-poster bed try making floaty voile bed curtains. If you don’t have a four-poster try pinning voiles on the ceiling above a normal bed.

Accessories Accessories are definitely the best way of bringing a flavour of Africa into your home, and if you haven’t yet managed that trip of a lifetime, to discover your own souvenirs and treasures, there is no need to worry as there are plenty of African bits and pieces available in import stores, Fair Trade stores, designer stores & flea markets. Essential items to look out for are tribal items and safari items these can include: Unusual African tribal masks for your walls – they are very striking and definitely make a statement in your room, wooden carvings and figurines, these are quintessentially African, and will quickly transform a fairly neutral room into your ideal African interior design oasis. Also look out for carvings and figurines of strikingly beautiful African women, in tribal dress.

Animal Prints Animal prints will make up a part of your African interior design scheme. Always go for prints and faux effects, rather than the real thing – to protect endangered species. Try to use animal prints as an effective accent rather than draping your room in them. Think of them for cushions, throws and even rugs. Tribal Textiles

18

Perfect Homes

As well as animal prints, use hand-woven tribal textiles – wall-hangings, cushions and throws. Tribal textiles are very striking and unusual, and you will be sure to get a wonderful, hand-crafted item, made with great skill and care. For artwork on your walls, choose photos and paintings of animals – lions, giraffe, elephants, rhino etc or pick pictures of the magnificent African sunsets. Also check out beautiful African batiks usually handcrafted and use them as wall-hangings, cushions or throws, to decorate your home. As a finishing touch, be sure to include lots of lush, leafy, green plants to get a really authentic look.

Autumn Accessories

Furniture Not that long ago, it was essential to have all matching furniture. This season, furniture doesn’t have to match, but simply need to complement each other. So, a townhouse styled room now benefits greatly from individual, exotic pieces from your travels, such as an oriental trunk used as a side table. Mixing furniture pieces with contrasting styles is now encouraged, so go forth and experiment.

Colour Schemes This season’s interior designs are all about getting back to nature using warm, organic forms. Think hands on – handmade, handcrafted. Your home is your haven and the burnt oranges, deep pinks and citric greens of this season’s interior styles will cosset those in the know with a warming glow. Think of the delicious crackle of autumn leaves underfoot and dappled shades of light falling through the limbs and leaves of trees. It’s all about an emotional response, feeling the change in the air and creating that gorgeous fruitfulness around you. Often with trends there are two colour schemes fighting for dominance. This season, there are three different styles, and the idea is more to follow what you like. White and cream is a popular combination, but remember to spice things up by adding some accessories with bright colour. For example, you could add a purple lamp to a room with a white sofa as well as some cream and pastel coloured cushions.

T

he 19th century Romantic poet John Keats famously described autumn as this “season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” and interior designers have taken nature as their motif this Autumn

Mists, early morning frosts, and that chilly feeling when you first get up in the morning are all signs that autumn is on its way. One of the best ways to overcome any sense of impending gloom is to take a look around your home and celebrate this season rather then let the early dusks and diminished sunlight hours depress you. Spring and autumn are the best times for redecorating. While in the spring it’s nice to use fresh colours to bring light into your home, in autumn you want a more homely feel. This doesn’t mean dark and gloomy though; especially not this year, as it’s all about colours and prints. Here are some of the latest trends for autumn and winter.

32

Perfect Homes

A similar, yet different colour scheme is the white and black colour contrast with tangerine orange. Orange is the colour of 2013, and it has remained a consistent feature in both the fashion world, and the interior design one. Although featured a lot less in this colour scheme, orange gives this look a more charismatic appeal without being overbearing. If you’re not a fan of the subtle colour tones, then the bohemia style of using deep reds and blues will be more your style. Bold red curtains in a light blue painted room and red accessories like area rugs, cushions, and fireplace ornaments are all part the bohemian look.

Accessories Bold prints for cushions and rugs are highly important this season. As white dominates the colour schemes it’s good to break it up with some intriguing and daring prints. Wall art is also playing a big role in making the difference between a nice room and a brilliant room. If it is the more classic style you prefer, take note of the revival of traditional heritage style fabrics such as herringbone and dogtooth. This resurgence in interiors has come straight from the catwalk and introduced into your home allowing you to create a classic yet contemporary look. Texture is a key trend with luxury being the focus from deep velvets and soft linens to suede’s and leathers. As winter is on the way an excellent way to cozy up in your home is by layering, just as we do with clothing, add some layering into your home, invest in some statement throws and cushions illustrating different colours, textures and patterns to create a warm and inviting space. Prints of buildings and architectural prints with large black frames are popular, as well as hanging mirrors with eye-catching frames or shaped in an unusual manner. A swarm of butterflies adjourning the wall as mirrors is one example of an unusually shaped mirror. Gothic arched mirror frames work well as bold and different mirror frames. Take a good look at these trends, and remember to experiment with the look of your home, so that you get the perfect atmosphere matching your personal style.

CASASOLA 34

S

what

mall details make a BIG difference to our homes, we want to tell you what it takes and is currently on trend.

Casasola Muebles is dedicated to furniture. It was founded over forty-five years ago by José Casasola Rodríguez, following the family traditions Cati having taken over from her father explains to Perfect Homes that “Furniture is in the blood”. The essence of her fathers vision remains the same: “we offer a variety of styles and products in terms of design, quality, and price, to meet the needs of each customer”. As fashion evolves, so too does home design and trends. Perfect Homes Magazine ask Cati how we can improve our home.

Cati, how I can re-new my home without having to remodel? Well, actually there is a simple way to give a different touch to your home, without having to make major alterations which can take months. Moreover, it is a decorative solution that completely changes the look of our home, and this can be achieved by changing the colour of the walls or wallpapering. The walls are undoubtedly the soul of every home, though sadly they are not always given enough attention.

by Roberto Cavalli - Cushions by Christian Lacroix

Perfect Homes

I, propose a very special wallpaper design which is chic and stylish the Roberto Cavalli range is a revolution in the world of paper. You find it in shades of silver and brocades with these designs on your wall you will transform your house. If you have a larger budget, you can also change the curtains or quilt the room. These details will re-decorate a room immediately without you having to change the furniture, especially if they are classic pieces.

What are the latest trends in decoration? Lets take a look at some rooms within the home. The living room should focus on modern lines - this season furniture is all about the simplistic straight lines” in white, gray or stone. Straight lines create a practical and versatile environment. The upholstery should be lightcoloured so not to overpower the look to the room. The Hall is often forgotten and is very important, it is the first room you see in a house and you need to decorate it with great care. This year I recommend that one of the walls be decorated in gold and silver, this will give personality to this room. The kitchen should be in light neutral tones. Although I always like to stress it must be practical, the trend leads to straight lines in furniture with a modern touch. In the bedroom, a custom leather headboard makes a dramatic difference. In bedrooms for young children, creativity is welcome. For a bedroom chair, I’d suggest vanilla and cream with natural wood. Juvenile’s rooms should be in shades of red, orange, purple in this area you can fun with colour!

An entrance to a house well lit makes any reception perfect. To create a cosy, warm inviting atmosphere add a table lamp with indirect light. However, in the kitchen, I would advise a whiter brighter light with indirect light somewhere on the counter. In the bedroom, lighting is essential, therefore, a table lamp, with silver-toned or a laser-cut design with a touch of glass, gives a classic and modern look.

What if I just want a home accessory that gives a special touch to a room? Detail is key, and the truth is that there are so many beautiful accessories. Casasola Muebles offer Christian Lacrois cushions in silver and black which completely change a sofa and a lounge. Pictures are also very important and very personal they leave your brand and style throughout the home. Picture frames remind you of your best moments, and flowers, add a touch of warmth to each room.

Inspirational Bedroom Designs

Perfect Homes

A bedroom should be a restful, soothing place where we can close the door on the excesses of life and express ourselves; they can be a heavenly haven where we retreat away from the kids, a sexy sultry boudoir, a room where our imaginations runs wide or a traditional family room.

Romantic:

Romantic and ornate are two interior design trends that have made a mark on bedroom furniture design. The Italian Renaissance of the 1400s was the beginning of furniture history as we know it and it has influenced many of the furniture characteristics we see today in both traditional and contemporary furniture designs. Out of the Renaissance came a joyous side to design in its ornate carvings know as baroque. The combination of the classic Grecian style mixed with lavish baroque styling give us what we know today as the Italian Renaissance furniture style. 40

The bedroom pictured here is reminiscent of the Renaissance style, with its upholstered and ornately carved Pecan wood bed paired with a sofa table carved with decorative motifs and set with two tall candelabras and architectural sconces below. The room’s decorative faux wall treatment mimics masonry cornices above the windows and crumbling plaster with block showing through. The room is brought together by a hand knotted wool area rug with floral motif looking patinaed with years of loving use. The room boasts the romance and ornate flair of fine Italian design,

Bedrooms Boudoir Glamour:

Many of us aspire to have a more glamorous boudoir that exudes style and comfort. Whatever size or shape your room, you can use different elements to help pull the look together. The first step is to start experimenting with colors, for example, pastel colors create a natural and calming feel in a bedroom. However, you should not be afraid to be more adventurous with colour, particularly when choosing your furniture and accessories, to make a bold statement. French-style, mirrored or ornate bedroom furniture is essential for a

glamorous look. From bedside tables to wardrobes, you can choose to go big and bold or small and elegant, but either way you cannot fail to make your room more enchanting. Your bed will essentially be the focal point of your room and so choosing one that has beautiful detailing such will instantly give your boudoir a glamorous look. For a sense of glamour, soft textures such as suede, silk or faux fur, or velvet are always a great way to make your room feel luxurious and to add that touch of sparkle add a sequin cushions or throws‌

Contemporary: Modern, minimalist cool icy tones of cream and grey provide a perfect setting for steamy nights.

Masculine: The combination of bold black, stark white and rich brown cabinetry brings a masculine look to this bedroom. Male décor is about functional furniture items not just beauty and accessories of their hobbies or favourite sports. A masculine bedroom should be simple and contemporary in appearance, with dark colours and very strong designs.

Island Getaway: Doesn’t a holiday in an exotic location sound wonderful? Tropical breezes, the sea lapping against the shore and beautiful blue skies overhead, whatever the diversion, a trip to a far away locations seems like a retreat to paradise. Luxury exotic bedrooms are easy to create, for the floor stick to neutral sand or beige carpets or wooden flooring, use a dark wooden bed canopy’s to emphasis the stark white of the canopy and nets. Fun accessories like stars and mussels, may also be added around the bedroom to give it an island feel.

The Spanish Property Market

- Make or break in 2012? Spain has always been a very popular destination. Buying a holiday home in Spain has gained international interest in the last months, more and more people understand there are great bargains to be had right now. If you have a dream of a holiday home in Spain, pay attention. It might be a long time until we see similar prices and conditions again!

Why are the prices so low? Developers who started big projects before the financial crisis are now struggling with an ever-increasing debt and need to get rid of their mortgages. The same goes for the private market. Owners, who purchased properties at a peak time when the prices were high, believed they made a great purchase. Now, developers and private owners need to sell their properties fast, resulting in low prices for a quick sell. It is not unusual to see discounts between 50-60 per cent, we even see some properties with up to 70% off original price.

Incentives The Spanish government sees this problem and has already put in place several measures to stimulate sales in this sector. By reducing the purchase tax on new properties in half and reducing the property gains tax with 50% for purchases in 2012, buying a property this year will most probably be a great investment.

A stable market in popular demand A lot of people interested in Spanish property are worried about the future. Looking at the market from a statistical point of view, Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca have always been in high demand, even through rough financial times. There are always going to be buyers interested in properties in Spain, especially the most popular areas like Costa del Sol. Costa del Sol remains popular because it is a prestigious area driven mostly by international money. World famous Puerto Banus and Marbella are superstars, offering easy international access to one of the best areas as far south as you can come in the whole of Europe. The properties in this area retain their value the most and are a bit pricier than Costa Blanca. Costa Blanca, also known as The White Coast, offers a more dramatic coastline with white beaches and a more traditional Spanish atmosphere for young and old. Some areas come close to being as international as Marbella and Puerto Banus, but not quite. The prices here are a little cheaper, offering better value for money. There is also a wider choice of contemporary and modern designed properties for sale. Both areas are fantastic places to buy a holiday home, you are as far south as you can come in Europe with the Costa del Sol region bordering 46

Perfect Homes

on Africa, offering one of the healthiest climates in Europe with soft winters and more than 300 days of sun. You’ll find that southern Spain offers something for everyone.

Incredible tax reductions only in 2012 The financial crisis is to blame for the fantastic prices available right now, but the Spanish Government also plays ball and now offers some lucrative tax reductions for purchases this year. You now get a whopping 50% off the property tax (IVA) on purchases of new properties, reducing it from 8% to only 4%. This said, it will only be available in 2012. From January 1st 2013, the taxes will increase to 10% To further stimulate sales, the government introduced a 50% reduction on your Property Gains Tax, cutting it in half on purchases made in 2012. This means you can save a lot of money buying a property this year and then selling it when the prices are higher. The next 5 months will be a winner for sure!

Positive trends A lot of things are happening in Spain, too much to cover here. Some projects will have more impact on the regions than others, like the building of a Cruise Ship harbor in Marbella and Paramount Hollywood Theme Park in Murcia. These two projects alone will generate an increased interest in the regions and stimulate further growth and sales in the property sector. It might not get better than this. The property market in Spain is rapidly growing; the incentives from the Spanish Government are working. We are selling properties like hot cake. Some of the popular areas are even starting to sell out. Waiting around for a further 1-3% price reduction will only make you lose out on your dream home and narrow your possibilities. With the fantastic tax incentives and prices at an all time low, there could be no better time to buy than 2012. Make up you mind. If you need help, we are here for you.

Words: Nicola Geldart

Everyone has a passion. Sometimes we were born knowing what it is, or more often than not, our passions need to be developed over time. Our individuality stems from those interests. In this day and age where everyone has the latest IPhone and everyone is wearing the latest fashions it is hard to stand out in the crowd. It’s even harder if you are trying to stand out in the creative world. This world is continuously evolving and producing amazing and innovative concepts. The team at UDesign is no exception to those innovations. Jason H & his team of designers have had a large impact in the design world. With their advanced approach to interior and furniture designs there is no doubt this company will continue to excel. The pioneering concept at UDesign is primarily both manufacture and design once off, custom-made, contemporary 50

Perfect Homes

furniture & designs for interior spaces. The beauty of this concept is that rather than having a standard sofa or dining table from a mass production company; one can have an individually styled piece that is specifically designed to suit each project. This option of having furniture custom-made is much more satisfying than looking through an endless supply of catalogues, hoping to find that “perfect” piece, which has the colour, size, & materials that you imagined. However, as well as producing & manufacturing their own bespoke furniture, they are also suppliers of other leading high-end furniture brands, as well as the latest contemporary fabrics, rugs, lighting & accessories. Due to UDesign having their own in-house manufacturing facility, clients can have a more direct input about their overall interior design. Better yet, UDesign offers the

option to create virtual 3D visuals for clients, which enables more experimentation with regards to colours, materials, and textures. With this program, clients have a better understanding of what their project will look like, making certain that there will be no unpleasant surprises when the finished project is unveiled. Furthermore, with this virtual option available to clients, more ideas, experimentations & adjustments can be envisioned between the designer and client. This gives clients the option of choosing the materials & finishes of the furniture & interior designs. In this artistic world, designers’ unique qualities often relate back to the materials they choose to use in order to push design boundaries. At UDesign the primary choice of materials are specially selected natural woods, mirror-finished high-gloss lacquers, brushed &

polished steel and colour glass. However, recently they have started to work with a new material labelled KRION™. This material was originally used in hospitals because its molecular properties did not allow bacteria to form. KRION™ can also be bent and moulded into a variety of shapes without any joints. In addition to its functionality, KRION™ is also an aesthetically pleasing material. It is warm in touch and has similar texture properties to natural stone. The material is available in a variety of colours, including translucent which can be backlit with LED lighting. It is also 100% recyclable making it ideal to use in many designs, which is why UDesign has commenced to use this material – from kitchens & bathrooms, to tables & sideboards. Jason’s love for innovative design has allowed for UDesign to

develop their individuality. Recently UDesign has started to branch out from residential design to creating commercial entertainment spaces. Their avant-garde designs are incorporating LED lighting and interactive products, which allow users to set the mood within their environments. UDesign has also introduced Liquid Floor Tiles into some of their entertainment designs. These tiles change colour and shape once touched which heightens the enjoyment in the entertainment spaces. All of these options further amplify the possibilities of UDesign’s bespoke design approach. The choices that UDesign offer to the public are vast. This assures that every design element that is produced in their workshop is a tailor-made custom design that will only be found in one place in the entire world – your home. 51

The Shard: Building London’s New Cityscape

A

city’s physical profile reveals a great deal about its nature, its history, its present mood and its plans for the future.

In the minds of many tourists, London is the city of Augustus Pugin and Christopher Wren, of the Perpendicular Gothic Houses of Parliament and the gleaming dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral, itself a comparatively new addition, after the original building perished in the 1666 Great Fire of London. Naturally, these old favourites never fail to draw tourists from all over the world and it is impossible to imagine that landmarks like Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square will ever lose their appeal, but London’s city planners are determined that Britain’s capital should not dwell too much in the past. Already 30 St. Mary Axe (better known as The Gherkin) has proved a big success and these days appears in establishing shots of London more than some of the city’s older structures and now, after the buzz of the Olympics, it has another reason to celebrate The Shard. This striking building was designed by Italian architect, Renzo Piano who is perhaps best known as Richard Rogers’s collaborator on Paris’s Pompidou Centre. The Shard was originally born from a meeting in Berlin in March 2000 between Piano and London based developer, Irvine Sellar who was keen to redevelop Southwark Towers, an unloved 1970s office block adjacent to London Bridge station.

56

57

W

hat ultimately emerged from that initial collision of creativity and financial clout was the tallest building in Europe, something of a surprise, given Piano’s vocal contempt for tall buildings. He later claimed that the building’s characteristic shape was inspired by the nearby railway lines, the old spires of London as captured by Canaletto and the masts of ships. Despite some opposition by associations such as the Royal Parks Foundation and English Heritage (who claimed that Piano’s design would represent, “A shard of glass through the heart of historic London” and unwittingly provided its nickname), the final approval for the building was finally granted by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, in November 2003. However, the demolition of Southwark Towers did not commence for another five years, delayed by the financial climate and the necessity of reaching a deal with the tenants of Southwark Towers, PriceWaterhouseCoopers. The lengthy construction process finally began in March 2009 and the topping out process was completed almost exactly three years later. This involved the installation of the final, 66 metre spire, which confirmed The Shard, at 310 metres, as the second tallest free-standing structure in the UK (beaten only by the Emley Moor transmitting station) and the tallest building in the European Union. The Shard was formally inaugurated on Thursday July the 5th 2012 by His Excellency Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabor Al Thani, 58

Perfect Homes

Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar and HRH the Duke of York. This important moment in the building’s history was marked by an impressive light and laser display that offered a hint as to how The Shard will change the appearance of the London skyline, especially by night. When complete, the interior will comprise several different sections: floors four to 28 will feature premium office space which, given the close proximity of London’s financial district, is well placed to attract the multinational firms that ply their trade in the square mile of the City. The next section will consist of three levels of restaurants, which will offer the best views in London; diners will be able to book their table online via The Shard’s official website. Above the restaurants sits the 200 room, fivestar Shangri-La Hotel, the first of this successful chain to open in the UK. Travellers in the Far East will already be familiar with the Shangri-La brand and its emphasis on extreme luxury and exceptional service. The hotel will also contain a spa and extensive business facilities. Just below the observatory are the highest residences in London, for those who have the necessary finance and a desire to enjoy a bird’s eye view of the capital; this is apartment life with a new and interesting twist. Finally, the observatory is contained within floors 68 to 72 and tickets are already on sale ahead of its opening in February next year. For visitors and locals alike, this will be an excellent opportunity to view the landscape of London

laid out before them. Topping the building, from the 73rd to 95th floors is the spire, which ensures that The Shard reaches 310 metres into the sky. Not everyone is impressed by London’s new skyscraper though; American architectural experts have already pointed out that it is still a midget compared to the Empire State Building (which measures a more impressive 381 metres) and the French have been especially energetic in their opposition to The Shard’s status as the EU’s tallest building, arguing that, if its spire is included in the measurement, Paris’s Eiffel Tower stands at 324 metres. In any case, it seems that it will not be long before France will be able to reclaim the title, since plans for the Hermitage Towers at La Defense in Paris are already well advanced. These twin residential towers, designed by Britain’s Norman Foster, will reach almost 340 metres and their last accessible floor will be located close to the roof, whereas The Shard’s observation deck stands at less than 250 metres. However, most experts agree that Renzo Piano’s design wins hands down over the blocky Hermitage Towers. This might seem an oddly inappropriate moment to be celebrating the birth of a new skyscraper, those harbingers of rebirth and new hope but for now, at least, Londoners have this extraordinary new structure to celebrate.

Boxed sections:

The Shard might be the EU’s tallest building, but it still has some way to go to compete on a global stage. Here is the Top Ten of Tallest Buildings in the World: Burj Khalifa, Dubai, UAE (828 metres) Makkah Royal Clock Tower Hotel, Mecca, Saudi Arabia (601 metres) Taipei 101, Taipei, Taiwan (509 metres) Shanghai World Financial Centre, Shanghai, China (492 metres) International Commerce Centre, Hong Kong, China (484 metres) Petronas Tower 1, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (452 metres) Petronas Tower 2, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (452 metres) Zifeng Tower, Nanjing, China (450 metres) Willis Tower, Chicago, USA (442 metres) Kingkey 100, Shenzhen, China (442 metres) The Shard appears at Number 66 in this list of architectural giants. Who is Renzo Piano? Born on the 14th of September 1937 in Genoa, Italy and attended the Politecnico di Milano. Alexander’s Collection Alexander’s Christmas Collection Finding the perfect gift for a friend or relative can cast a slightly nightmarish air over Christmas preparations. What is a suitable offering for the person who has everything? The happy news is that there is an easy answer; make your way to the Golden Mile and the Oasis Business Centre, then step through the doors of Alexander’s Collection. Although perhaps better known for their gorgeously opulent carpets and rugs, this very highclass emporium is just the place to find exquisite and unique items for Christmas. “When it comes to our clients, the word ‘no’ does not exist,” says Alex and this attitude sums up the ambience of this extraordinary place, where exclusivity and friendliness effortlessly co-exist. Collectors will be delighted by the display of figurines displaying the exact uniforms of Napoleon’s army: “One of our clients wanted one of these figures but asked if we could provide it on a slightly larger scale,” Alex reveals. Naturally this was not considered a problem, since the Alexander’s Collection team is asked to meet the exact requirements of its discerning clientele on a daily basis. Manufacture Royale is an extraordinary company that specialises in reproducing, in coruscating detail, the finest French porcelain. The dazzling plates that are displayed are exact copies of designs first imagined by the famous Limoges factory. “Any Limoges porcelain that a customer sees, whether it appears in an auction catalogue or a museum, can be produced to order,” Alex confirms. “With the help of the experts at Manufacture Royale, we can provide exactly what is needed.” Perhaps the most striking pieces on display are some unusual chess and backgammon sets. Fashioned from wood and coloured amber, these items immediately catch the eye and would delight anyone who considers themselves an undiscovered Bobby Fischer or Gary Kasparov. The watchwords at Alexander’s Collection are quality and service and only the finest objects adorn the showroom, from glass figurines by Daum and dramatic Murano glass sculptures by Zanetti to delicate bone china from Tiche of Italy and gorgeous classical place settings and pictureframes by Christofle of France. Alex offers a final piece of advice about buying Christmas presents for those oh, so fussy friends: “ C h o o s e according to your soul and your taste.” With words of wisdom like that it is impossible to make the wrong decision.

pias chimeneas, fire + design Winter Warmth… We can all feel it turning colder as winter approach’s and with rising energy prices it’s not surprising that many people are looking for alternative ways to heat their homes. Well there is an answer … Pias Chimeneas Fire & Design situated in Nueva Andalucía, Marbella are specialists in the importation and installation of avantgarde fireplaces, stoves and outdoor heating accessories. Established in 2004 Pias Chimeneas Fire & Design have become market leaders in the provision of heating products here on the Costa del Sol. With a wide range of models available in their showroom, from traditional gas fires to the popular state of the art and infrared heaters in either a classical design or as a more contemporary statement piece Pias Chimeneas has something for everybody. This winter Pias Chimeneas Fire & Design introduce The Pellet Stove. A wood- fuelled heating system which can provide heat and hot water to your entire home, significantly reducing your energy bills and working in complete harmony with the environment. A pellet stove works by burning biomass pellets, which provides an efficient source of heat; these pellets are slowly fed into the pellet stove via a large storage container (hopper) to produce a constant flame. Producing only small quantities of ash combined with a regular automatic cleaning cycle this pellet stove is easy to keep clean and maintain. When considering your heating needs, it is imperative to seek professional advice on issues such as chimney location, appliance size and what heating appliance is best suited to your heating and aesthetic needs, as every home is different and what may work in one home necessarily may not be suitable for another. Pias Chimeneas, Fire & Design work hand in glove with architects, builders and interior designers and have become past masters at converting existing open fireplaces as well offering advice on new contemporary and modern designs. 68

THE RISE OF THE EN-SUITE GARAGE From Singapore to Miami, a new concept in property development, the en-suite sky garage is taking owners, and their cars, to new heights.

Big cities have always posed serious problem for car owners, the biggest two being traffic and parking. From London to Beijing, there always seems to be too much of one and not enough of the other. Though we can’t do a lot about the former, a few innovative property developers are taking steps to help relieve the latter. The rise of the ensuite sky garage means you’ll never again have to leave the Lamborghini down in the cold, dusty basement where, God forbid, it may be forced to rub shoulders with the minivans of the world.

On the other side of the world, in Singapore, Hamilton Scotts has, quite literally, taken the idea to new heights, with the opening of what is Asia’s tallest en-suite garage. Each of Hamilton Scotts’ 56 units allows you to bring your car right into your home via an elevator activated by a biometric scan. Located adjacent to Orchard Road, Singapore’s premier shopping belt, each unit has approximately 2,765 sq ft of living space and all are designed to face the lush greenery of Goodwood Hills. 74

Perfect Homes

It’s an idea that is catching on in cities around the world. In New York, a new development called, and located at, 200 Eleventh Avenue, is a 16-floor new build with fourteen en-suite sky garages each with an added 300 sq ft space reserved for your car and accessed by a keylock elevator. Just pull up to the building and the garage automatically identifies who you are and which apartment your car belongs to. After driving into the elevator, the lift will transport your car to the floor you live on, just pull forward and both you and your car are home safe and sound, no matter how high up you live.

Like its New York counterpart, Hamilton Scotts is more than just a fancy way to park your car. Apart from the luxurious apartments themselves, residents also have access to a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, barbeque area, a lounge, gym, and 24-hour security. Next on the horizon is Miami Beach where Porsche Design has teamed with Dezel Properties on a beachfront en-suite car garage. Known mostly for their sunglasses and watches, this is Porsche Design’s first venture into the property market.

Perfect Homes

74

The result is a 57-story luxury tower where residents are whisked to their apartments in glass elevators with panoramic city or ocean views all while seated comfortably in their cars After Miami, it’s anyone’s guess. Hong Kong, Dubai, London? Considering the state of parking in our urban areas it could be any or all of them. One thing we do know is that the en-suite garage is a concept that’s here to stay. And for anyone that thinks bringing a car into a penthouse apartment is a little over the top, look at it this way. 75

Perfect Homes

It not only eliminates the painful separation anxiety a true car lover feels when forced to part from baby Bentley for the night, but there’s an altruistic side to it. After all, these developments are doing their part to help solve the city’s parking problem, one very cool en-suite sky garage at a time…

LET’S GET COOKING WITH A SURPLUS OF HOUSES ON THE MARKET, SELLERS MUST MAKE THEIR HOUSES AS ATTRACTIVE AS POSSIBLE IN ORDER TO INCREASE THEIR ODDS OF FINDING A BUYER

O

ne way to do this is by upgrading certain features of the house, with one of the most important being the kitchen. Stan Israel former CEO and founder of the National Association of builders and now Editor of Perfect Homes Magazine said upgrading a kitchen especially one in a relatively poor state of repair is a big selling point, especially with women. According to several Real Estate agents here on the coast, the most popular things that buyer ask for these days are granite counter tops, as well as island kitchens and stainless steel appliances. Some agents say advertising an upgraded kitchen can also be key in getting buyers through the front doors, which as everyone knows is difficult to do in our current market. Buyers are very choosy and are very selective, which they can afford to be right now because there are so many homes on the market. So anything that will stand out in the advertisement such as upgraded kitchens or bathrooms will make the villa or apartment more marketable and attractive to buyers. A lot of home owners are looking for more 78

Perfect Homes

of an open plan concept and more space, I’ve also notice designers & builders are building and remodelling for how people live their lives today. Open plan kitchens offer the opportunity to look into the family room where you have your TV and allow you to engage with your family. Another benefit to open plan kitchens, is if you enjoy entertaining you can still interact with your guests. When upgrading, custom cabinets and granite work tops are favoured, I spoke to Neil Gudging who has just remodelled his kitchen and is getting round to his bathroom soon ‘so he says’ to his wife Patricia, he told me companies can work with the existing footprint to ensure the refrigerator, sink and oven remain in their existing spots and the cost remain lower. Simple additions such as new lighting (led’s) are favoured by the company he used for lighting ‘Electric Direct’ who’s Managing Director Mr. Adam Brown told me lighting fixtures and under-cabinet lighting can really improve the look of the kitchen. Adam cautioned about home owners attempting to do the remodelling job themselves especially when it comes to lighting, he said all too often this ends up

costing more money when a contractor has to come in and repair and finish the job. Contractor will get better prices on materials and the work will be completed quicker and in his case guaranteed - so using a contractor from the start is cost effective. He also said when the project is complete you can usually tell the work has been done by professionals compared to the work done by do-it yourselfers .

Cost of buying in Spain It is important to be clear from the outset the real costs you will face when you buy a property in Spain. It is equally important to be clear about the ongoing costs you will face as a property owner in Spain once you have brought your dream home. Here we explain all the different types of costs, please bear in mind that the actual cost will depend on your particular circumstances. As a buyer of property in Spain there are a number of costs and taxes over and above the property price that you will have to pay. Depending upon whether you are buying a new property from a developer, or a resale property from a private individual, you will either have to pay VAT & Stamp Duty, or a transfer tax. The different cases are explained below, along with the other costs and taxes that are common to both cases. NEW BUILD FROM A DEVELOPER VAT & Stamp Duty (IVA & Actos Jurídicos Documentados – AJD) These taxes apply for residential properties being sold for the first time (never previously occupied), or for commercial properties and plots of land. New Properties Purchase Tax: At present the buyers of brand new houses in Spain are liable to pay 8% * IVA on the purchase price of residential properties (villa, apartment, etc), if the house is finished or is being built at the time of the purchase, plus an extra 1.5% stamp duty (Actos Jurídicos Documentados - AJD ), however if you purchase land, commercial premises or parking spaces, then the IVA (VAT) rises to 21% . * 50% Reduction in IVA (VAT) tax, now only 4% on new properties bought from developers this has been extended by the Spanish Government until the end of 2012 Both IVA and AJD are paid by the buyer, and if any deposit is paid before completion of the sale, such deposit will be subject to IVA at the moment of payment of this deposit. In this scenario there is no transfer tax to pay. RESALE PROPERTY PURCHASE: Transfer Tax (Impuesto sobre Transmisiones Patrimoniales – ITP) . House buyers of re-sale property (as opposed to brand new) are required to pay the Impuesto de Transferencia de Propiedad - Transfer Tax which is now between 8%. – 10%. This tax applies if the property is deemed to be a second or posterior transfer (i.e. not the first time a newly built home is bought), and is paid by the buyer. If any deposit is paid before completion of the sale it is not subject to ITP pro rata. 94

Perfect Homes

However the full amount of ITP still has to be paid upon completion. In this scenario there is no IVA to pay. Transfer Tax for resale property purchases will be calculated according to the following rate: €400,000 =8% Transfer Tax €400,000 - €700,000 = 9% Transfer Tax €700,000 =10% Transfer Tax. INCREASED PATRIMONY TAX PAYABLE TO SPANISH TREASURY When a property sale in Spain takes place, a capital gains tax must be paid by the seller. According to Spanish fiscal law, the buyer withholds 5% of the total purchase price to make sure that the seller does not take the money and run. This amount represents a capital gains tax on the profit made by the seller at the time of the sale. That is the difference between the current (official) sale price and the price paid by seller when he/she originally purchased the property + the value of any reforms and improvements carried out since then. Capital gain tax for non-residents The capital gains tax is payable to the Spanish Treasury (Tesoro Público). The “Impuesto sobre la ganancia patrimonial” (capital gain tax) is a tax on the profits obtained from the sale of assets purchased at a lower price. During the period between the 1st January 2012 and 31st December 2013, capital gain tax for property transfer will increase.

For non-fiscal residents in Spain the capital gain tax will increase to 21% flat rate, from the previous 19%. Capital gain is calculated as the difference between the sale price and the inflation adjusted purchase value of the property (the adjustment is done by using the official coefficient tables from the Spanish Government). To this value the seller can deduct the adjusted cost of purchase and the expenses on the property, like renovations and works.

region and type of property. Unless the buyer has specifically agreed to pay the agent’s fee this cost will be built into the sale price.

When a non-resident sells a property in Spain there will be a pre-emptive retention from the tax authorities equivalent to 3% of the sale price, because this amount is in general higher than the capital gain tax to be paid the seller can expect a refund from the Spanish tax authorities during the following fiscal year. There have been talks of increasing the retained percentage but for the time being the tax authorities has set it at 3%. Capital gain tax for fiscal residents in Spain There will be an increase as well for fiscal residents over 2012 and 2013 with a new progressive table: 21% for the portion between 0 €and 6000 € (increased from 19%). 25% for the portion between 6000 € and 24,000 € (increased from 21%). 27% for the portion above 24,000 € (increased from 21%). Any seller who is over 65 and has been a legal resident in Spain for the last three years does not have to pay this tax. Residents and nonresidents who purchased the property they are now selling before December 1986 are also exempt from the capital gains tax. Plusvalia A special reference should be made to the local capital gains tax – known as Plusvalía. This is a local / municipal tax that only applies to the increase in value of the land upon which urban properties are built, and that is levied at the time of transfer of such properties. It is calculated on the basis of the valor catastral (an administrative equivalent to the UK rateable value) of the property. The amount to be paid will depend on how long the seller has owned the property: the longer the period of time during which the seller has owned the property, the higher the amount of tax. This tax should be paid by the seller, though it is possible for sellers of resale property to try to shift the burden of this tax to the buyer. This practice is unheard of in regions such as the Costa Brava and the Costa Dorada, though quite common in the Costa Del Sol. COMMON COSTS: Agency Fees: Estate agency fees or commissions are paid by the seller, unless otherwise agreed. If the buyer uses a search agency then search fees are paid by the buyer. Despite the ability of the internet to bring together buyers and sellers without the need for an agent most people still use agents to find property in Spain. However you should be aware that agents charge between 2% and 15% of the sale price, depending upon the

Legal Fees: You are strongly advised to hire a lawyer to help you during the buying process. Your lawyer drafts and reviews contracts on your behalf and can explain all the legal and administrative issues you face. Your lawyer should also carry out any necessary due diligence (checking ownership claim of the seller, charges on the property, permits, etc.) and arrange all the required documents to complete the process (property registration, tax payments, etc.). A lawyer: Abogado in Spanish will charge you according to the service you require. This will vary according to the complexity of the purchase. Many charge around 1% of the purchase price once the sale has gone through PLUS 21% IVA. Be warned that some lawyers charge 1.5% or more of the sale price, which is a rip off so check the rates before you commit to there undertaking. Mortgage costs: If you choose to buy with a mortgage then this will incur several additional costs. First there will be the property valuation that the mortgage provider will require before granting the mortgage. This is paid for the by the buyer and can cost around €500. Then there will be the costs of the mortgage itself. This varies according to the provider, and even according to the particular branch. However there is usually some kind of opening fee of around 1% of the value of the mortgage. Finally a mortgage will increase the Notary expenses. Notary Expenses: Notary fees are set by the Spanish state are nearly always paid by the buyer the final amount you pay will depend on the value of the property you buy. Notary expenses are calculated in relation to the purchase price declared in the deeds of sale. To be on the safe side you should calculate Notary fees as being

1% of the purchase price declared in the deeds of sale. In many cases however Notary fees are more like 0.5% (or less) of the price declared in the deeds. A notary must be present when the parties involved, buyer and seller, sign the sale contract and the deeds (escritura). Property Registry Inscription Registro de Propiedad

Fees

Expenses related to inscribing the sale with the land registry are also nearly always paid by the buyer, and are calculated in relation to the purchase price declared in the deeds of sale. The land registrar usually charges about 42% of the notary’s fees. In Summary, allow for up to 11% of the purchase price to be set aside for taxes and other costs If the buyer takes out a mortgage these costs can be somewhat higher due to an additional public deed for the mortgage and the inevitable bank charges involved. In this case transaction costs might reach between 12% and 13% of the value of the property purchased. COST OF OWNING A PROPERTY IN SPAIN: There will of course be costs associated with owning a property in Spain. Some of these will be maintenance costs, such as cleaning, repairing, reforming, utility bills, rubbish collection, and so on. These will be determined by the size and type of the property you buy. Obviously a large villa with a garden and pool will require much more effort and cost to maintain than a small apartment. Apart from the general maintenance costs referred to above, there are a number of costs in the form of taxes and fees that property owners in Spain face. Property Ownership Tax (Impuesto Sobre Bienes Inmuebles – IBI). A local tax on the ownership of property in Spain, irrespective of whether the owner is a resident or not. Calculated on the basis of the valor catastral (an administrative value that is usually lower than the market value, sometimes considerably so) set by the town hall the tax rate goes from 0.4% – 1.1% of the valor catastral depending on the Spanish region. Annual Wealth Tax (Impuesto Sobre Patrimonio) A wealth tax is a tax on total assets rather than income. Spain had wealth tax (Patrimonio) up until 2008, at which point it was effectively suspended. The government brought it back in 2011, but with different rules. (It was brought back as a temporary measure for the 2011 96

to 2012 tax years, but this has now been extended to include 2013 as well). This guide describes how the “new version” of this tax works, focusing firstly on the allowances, which result in all but the very wealthy having no tax liability. Spanish wealth tax allowances: Spanish fiscal residents must declare, and pay, in Spain, for all the assets, real estates, etc obtained in Spain or in any other country in the world (UK, Germany, Russia, etc.). And all the Spanish residents will be taxed for this tax for global Wealth higher from €700.000. It means that individuals with Wealth less than this amount will not be taxed. Each individual will be allowed to reduce the Wealth with determinate debts, charges and expenses (like a mortgage for example). Once made some reduction on the tax base, the tax will be from a progressive scale from 0,2% up to 2,5 %.

of the community of owners, know as the Comunidad de Propietarios. This will entail paying community fees for the upkeep of the common areas, and any other services that the community vote for. The fees will vary according to the magnitude of the common areas, the costs of maintaining them, and the services that the community vote for. A budget for annual community expenses is approved by majority vote of all owners (or representatives) who are present at the annual general meeting of the Comunidad de Propietarios. Insurance: Household insurance will vary according to the circumstances of the owner and the type of property. However it should be born in mind as a cost that all property owners will face.

PERSONAL INCOME TAX (Impuesto sobre la Renta de No Residentes – IRNR) Non-residents who own property in Spain have to pay an annual income tax that varies according to whether the property is rented out or not. Not rented out: Non-resident property owners who do not rent out their property and who do not have any other source of income in Spain pay income tax based on the value of their property. The tax rate is fixed as 25% of 2% of the valor catastral (ratable value) of the property. Rented out: If non-residents rent out their property and receive an income in exchange, they are obliged by law to declare this income and pay taxes on it. The taxable base and the tax rate will be determined by the laws as they apply to each person’s particular circumstances. In many cases non-residents simply pay a flat rate of 25% of the gross income they earn from their property in Spain. Residents in Spain will have to pay the income tax based on their income earned during the year. The tax rate depends on the level of income. Community Fees: Owners of property that is part of any development, building, or complex in which common zones are shared with other owners are by law obliged to be members

Decorating tips that can improve your home

W

hether you own you’re own home or in many cases here in Spain rent, there are always little things you can do that are easy and cheap to improve the look and feel of a place. You can do a little decorating inside if you feel the need without spending too much money especially if you are on a tight budget, a great tip is to work on one thing or one room before moving onto the next, doing this keeps your budget in check and means you do not end up with a house or apartment that has unfinished rooms. You will probably find that once you get started home decorating is not as bad or difficult as you may have thought, you may even find it fun and get the bug as you see your home improvements take place and your home looking better, actually this can energise you

and propel you to move to the next room. Plants & flowers, either real or artificial can be used to great effect to enhance any part of the home, inside or out. Live plants of course add life, colour and atmosphere to any room but remember live plants need sufficient light. The right flowers can also help to purify the air on a daily basis and create a lovely aroma within the home, my favourite are Oriental Lilies. Admittedly, there are some people out there who have the lethal touch when it comes to live plants (my wife for instance) and sometimes it’s your fur children (your cats and dogs) that destroy live plants, so in these instances it can be a good idea to look at using artificial plants and flowers. In my opinion these look very good and nowadays look every bit as good as the real thing. Silk flowers can be used with great effect and are available in so many different colours and styles which are great for harmonizing and brightening up those small rooms with no windows. The downside of these lovely silk flowers are they are amazing dust traps so gentle cleaning will be required to keep them looking at there best. Mirrors should not be under estimated when designing a room, large or small, square or round the versatility of the mirror is wonderful and it is a great tool in the professional designer or self decorator’s armoury. The

placing of a mirror in the right place can really enlighten and brighten a room. A mirror in a small room is particularly beneficial and serves to make the room feel larger. In a large room a mirror can not only fill up a large plain wall creating a feature but it can actually serve to knit the whole room together and in some cases it can bounce wonderful light and the sun into other areas of the room that would otherwise be dark. Lastly, I would like to bring to your attention the art of Feng Shui, I must admit to not being an expert in the practical side of the ancient Chinese art of creating positive energies but I am certainly a believer. Within the next issue I will continue to bring you more fun tips on decorating, how to accessorize your home and trends. Stylish Tiles provide the perfect finishing touches to any modern design…. Tiles are being used more creatively in the home today with a clear steer towards natural versions, which will make your home feel instantly more organic providing strong links between the outside and inside. Natural looking tiles are available in a variety of neutral shades meaning you are free to use them as a backdrop behind a huge range of interior design schemes, whether you prefer classic or ultra contemporary. The texture of tiles and how many you choose to display can also create more interest in your project – for example, stone can add texture and looks just the part on a feature wall or even used to frame a fireplace.

Mother of pearl mosaic tiles look simply stunning and could be used to define ascents such as provide a splash back in the bathroom; alternatively you could use them to cover the room to top to toe creating the WOW factor..

Porcelain tiles provide the perfect alternative to natural stone versions – nowadays, not only do they look incredibly similar to stone but they can be less expensive further, they don’t need to be sealed and are inherently stain resistant, in an area with heavy traffic such as hallways, kitchens or bathrooms. When choosing titles consider the size you would like to use, don’t forget yes you can change the size and types of tiles used to create different zones within a given room, but remember the golden rule and don’t choose tiles which are too large in a small room as this will inevitably make the room look smaller.

Each month has a flower that symbolizes the month of somebodies birth, this is sometimes referred to as a Birth Month Flower. Flowers by month is a term describing flowers related to a recipient’s birth month, and in general flowers associated with particular months of the year. It is one of a class of specialized categorizations offered by florists. In a cultural sense, flower characteristics such as appearance, colour, and scent, have relevance as gifts. It is believed that it were the Romans who started celebrating birth and birthdays using flowers. Seasonal flowers were used not just for decoration, but also taken as gifts and therefore can probably be credited with the tradition of birth flowers.

Flower Fashion by Bob Slingerland

Everything changes with the passing of time. What was the ultimate look of some time ago seems to be old-fashioned now. This doesn’t only happen in the fashion industry. When it comes to flower design, the same thing occurs. Everything starts with interior design, whilst flowers are complimentary. We came to the point that anything is in and we can’t talk about the latest interiors. We are living in a decade in which everything is admitted. Especially living in a place like Marbella, which is very cosmopolitan. The latest trends from all over the world are gathered here. Every country has its particular view of fashion. That’s what makes the coast so unique. Flowers are used to give a certain look to a space. Let us talk about parties and weddings. Although some people still go for the traditional look, more and more a special theme is being chosen. Flowers should enhance and enforce a decoration and must add to convert a venue in a unique way. We are now seeing more and more party themes such as 1001 night, Bollywood, the Sixties, Oriental or Spanish, so you can imagine the different types of flower decorations which are needed to create this final touch. The same happens with colour schemes. Who can tell what the flowers colour of this year is? I am sorry, but I can’t give an answer to this question. This leads to another question. Who decides in the fashion industry what is going to be next year’s colour? For sure the designers are responsible for this. When it comes to flower arranging, something similar happens. A good example is the flower decoration done in the Four Seasons Hotels. It all started in the George V Hotel in Paris. Their florist achieved a real breakthrough. Putting flowers upside down, submerged totally in water or letting groups of flowers sit on top of a vase. In spite of these fabulous innovations, the classic style still has got its public. It is true that white flowers are the most popular ones since quiet a few years. They always seem to look great in any surroundings and give this elegant touch. White flowers are also a good & safe choice when sending flowers as you cannot always be sure about the interior of the person’s house you are sending the flowers too. But when it comes to decorating a party, rules are changing. White flower displays do remind us of weddings. Although we think that we are very open-minded, something classic stays present in the back of our minds. The same happens with multicolour flower arrangement on weddings. Of course the final effect can be smashing, but our preconceptions expect the décor to be white? The only thing that really has changed in flower arranging is the designs of the arrangements. Things seem to be far more natural and the use of greenery is a must now. A flower looks much better when surrounded by different types of leaves. New materials are introduced, like branches, raffia, fruits etc. combining various textures add to achieve a natural but surprising look. So: What is fashion, what is in, what is cool…….? The truth is that there is no satisfying answer. Did you know that male customers mostly prefer multi-colour displays and women normally go for a much softer look? It all depends on personal taste and preferences. Your surroundings should be comforting and express your personality. Flowers play an important part in it. I am so glad that the flower business is still very individual and can be considered as an art. It all depends on the design and creativity of the florist and some of us really do a good job!!!

It can be viewed from various vantage points, as you stroll along the paths, or appreciate it from within a house to which it is attached.

The classic Japanese garden is an artificial garden that reproduces natural scenic beauty in a heightened intensity. Its charm lies in its subtle, highly sophisticated layout in a limited space. The aim of Japanese landscape gardening, which has a long history of development, is to create a scenic composition by arranging rocks, trees, shrubs and running water in such a way as to create the sweep of a vast landscape. Japanese gardens are usually referred to as the “hill garden” (“tsukiyama”) and the “waterless stream garden” (“karesansui”). The hill garden features a hill usually combined with a pond and a stream. 124

Fine specimens of this style are the gardens of Tenryuji Temple and Saihoji Temple, both in Kyoto. In the dry landscape garden, rocks and sands form the main elements, the sea being symbolized not by water but by a layer of sand with furrows suggestive of the rippling movement, and waterfalls by an arrangement of rocks. Examples of this style are the gardens of Ryoanji Temple and Daitokuji Temple, also in Kyoto. With the introduction of the tea ceremony in the 14th century, the chaniwa (garden attached to the tea-ceremony house) came to be designed and laid out. Actually, it is not a garden but a narrow path leading up to the chashitsu (tearoom proper). The aim of the designer of this style was to create a feeling of solitude and detachment from the world. Tea garden is mainly featured by the placement of stepping stones.

Japanese rock gardens got their western name because of the tranquil nature of the garden, which encourage meditation and a Zen-like atmosphere. Zen, which is a school of Buddism, is interpreted by many westerners to mean a state of introspection and enlightenment achieved by deep meditation. Zen gardens have become a part of the stress relieving product industry with much smaller versions of Japanese rock gardens available to the public. These may be considered as a somewhat watered down version of the true art of rock gardening, but popular nonetheless. A desktop Zen garden is comprised of a small tray with rocks, sand and a miniature rake. The armchair Zen gardener can then place the rocks anywhere the mood strikes, and rake the sand to his heart’s content. While it may not induce the deep meditation a real Japanese rock garden can help you achieve, it may provide a little bit of the calming diversion you need to get through the day.

STYLE WITHOUT COMPROMISE

La Zagaleta There are many wonderful residential developments that have been built in recent years on Spain’s Costa del Sol. However, there is one that certainly seems to stand out from the rest. Nestling in the hills above Benahavis, just 10 km from the busy coast, La Zagaleta is one of Europe’s most exclusive residential developments and is considered to be one of the most beautiful places in Southern Spain. From 1991 La Zagaleta was marketed as the ultimate private residential enclave, a golf and country club environment that would offer prospective residents a unique blend of absolute privacy, total security and luxurious residences. From its release during the early nineties the development has now become one of the most exclusive addresses within Europe and continues to be the benchmark for every other luxury gated community. Unlike other developments along the Costa del Sol, La Zagaleta, awarded for the low-built density consist of spectacular villas, rather then apartments, and each one as you would expect has been finished to a very high standard each with spectacular views either towards the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar, or overlooking the golf course. This development provides owners with not only good quality privacy and security but a number of other wonderful facilities. As an owner of such a property you will have access to two of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular golf courses designed by Californian Bradford Benz, one of which is considered to be among the most prestigious. This is because the amount of time and effort and money put into creating a course that contains wonderful landscaping full of lush vegetation but also spectacular views. As you play a round of golf on this course you are offered not only fabulous views of the Mediterranean but also of the North African Coast and the Rock of Gibraltar.

Among other facilities on the development, the private equestrian club is truly exceptional there are 23 stables and 4 rings available for horses belonging to La Zagaleta as well as for those belonging to owners. MORE THAN JUST RELAXING - A HOT TUB CAN BE GOOD FOR YOU TOO!

Discover what ancient cultures knew millennia ago: immersion in hot water can be good for the body, mind and spirit. Besides providing a relaxing hydrotherapy experience, hot tubs and portable spas provide many health benefits. A long, soothing soak in a HotSpring Spa could be just what the doctor ordered. Whether to unwind from the complexities of everyday life or to soothe sore muscles and joints caused by sports or minor strains, a HotSpring Spa can help spa users feel better — naturally.

RELAXATION AND STRESS REDUCTION

Stress has an adverse effect on health the heart works harder, breathing becomes more rapid and shallow, and digestion slows. Nearly every process of the body is degraded.

Many physicians and physical therapists recognize the value of a hot tub as an ideal environment for rehabilitation therapy.

Researchers have estimated that 80% of disease is stress related.

Warm water and soothing massage relieves anxiety and relaxes tense muscles. A hot tub provides a sanctuary for quite moments alone or to connect with family and friends

Raises body temperature and causes blood vessels to dilate, resulting in increased circulation and blood flow which accelerates the body’s natural healing process. Speeds the elimination of lactic acids and other toxins, which are replaced by oxygen and the body’s natural nutrients. Relaxes muscles and stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers. Helps increase flexibility and range of motion, which can help prevent exerciserelated injuries. Ideal environment for stretching which can help stimulate the production or retention of lubricants between connective tissue fibres. Helps increase flexibility and range of motions which can help prevent exercise related injuries

ELIMINATION OF ARTHRITIC PAIN AND OTHER RHEUMATOD DISEASES The Arthritis Foundation recognizes the benefits of hydro-massage and warm water exercise to help relieve arthritis pain. A morning soak in a hot tub can provide temporary relief from arthritis pain and help you feel better throughout the day. Reduces body weight by approximately 90%, relieving pressure on joints and muscles and making it a safe and gentle environment for warm water exercise. Increases circulation and helps move inflammatory substances away from the joints. Allows muscles to become relaxed, which creates an overall feeling of comfort and makes it easier to carry out daily tasks.

Raises the body’s temperature and causes blood vessels to dilate, resulting in increased circulation. Decreases swelling and stiffness and restores strength and flexibility, which can help increase range of motion and protect joints against further damage. There is nothing more attractive than a crystal clear swimming pool. Combine crystal clear water with perfectly coloured liners and surrounding areas and you have yourself a dream swimming pool, when it is clean, clear and sparkling it can be the envy of every neighbour however if the maintenance is not done correctly that once glimmering pool can become an eyesore and embarrassment… We all know that cleaning a pool is not only a tiresome job but one that has to be done on a regular basis. Maintaining that brand-new look normally turns out to be a herculean task and one most people do not envisage doing after a long days work. Pool Maintenance isn’t just about removing the odd leave that has flown into it or adding a couple of pool tablets it takes a lot of hard work, dedication and know how. There’s the daily water testing to ensure the chlorine, PH, and alkalinity levels are correct. The fortnightly Cyanuric Acid testing and then the seasonal Calcium testing and draining on top of that there’s the general wear and tear maintenance to take into consideration … All in all ensuring your pool is kept in tip top conditions can become a full time job… A proper maintenance routine is as mentioned above time consuming but worthwhile in the long term as it will ensure that your pools is always clean & ready for use, Marbella Pools and Spas based in San Pedro have specialised in providing swimming pool 144

maintenance and technical support for over 20 years to the residents of the Costa del Sol between Estepona & Cabopino.

Weekly Pool Maintenance

Whether you are a home owner or a property manager, Marbella Pool & Spa’s team of experienced pool service staff are trained to provide you with a complete pool cleaning service, which includes balancing the pool water correctly, inspecting the pool filtration equipment is working correctly and physically cleaning the water giving you peace of mind, knowing that your pool is in expert professional hands.

Check return flow of water to the pool. Add chemicals at this point to ensure effective mixing with filtered water return

Below we look at a sample maintenance programme.

Check pool ladder and board/slide fittings are secure

Daily Pool Operation

Filtration

Test pH & Free Chlorine levels using a test kit. Ensure pH is within the 7.2 - 7.6 range

There are several types of filters available for swimming pool water. Sand and gravel, diatomaceous earth, anthracite, and cartridge types are the filter mediums most commonly employed. Regardless of the medium used, the basic principles are the same.

The pool filter should run at least 8 to 10 hours per day (dependent upon size of pool). Set your pool timer or remember to run the pool manually if you don’t have a timer. If you are not running your pool 24 hours per day, it is best to have it running during the daylight hours (instead of night) Make sure your skimmer baskets are empty and clear of leaves or other debris Chlorine must be added to the pool daily

Completely backwash filter

Test & adjust water for Chlorine, pH and Alkalinity Add Chlorine to pool Vacuum pool floor and walls Empty skimmer baskets

This consists of passing water through tiny passageways. Particles larger than these passages are trapped and thereby separated from the main body of the water. This process continues until all of these passageways are blocked. The filter must then be cleaned and the cycle repeated.

Vacuuming A filter is designed to remove sediment and suspended matter from the main body of water, however, some dirt will inevitably settle to the bottom of the pool during periods when the filter is not in operation. The only way for this sediment to be removed is through vacuuming. The swimming pool vacuum operates in a similar manner to the common household unit except it draws water through the vacuum head instead of air. There are two ways in which this may be accomplished. One method employs a jet of water supplied by a garden hose to power the suction which draws the dirt into the head to be trapped in a cloth bag. The other method uses the suction power supplied by the filter which draws the sediment and dirt from the pool floor for removal through the filter.

As well as swimming pool maintenance Marbella Pool & Spas also offer:

When there is a considerable amount of sediment to be removed the filter valves should be adjusted so that the vacuumed water will bypass the filter and run to waste.

Pump repair or replacement Filter repair or replacement

It is recommended that the pool be vacuumed at least twice a week.

Leak detection and repair Swimming pool plumbing Coping stones Pool tiling Skimmer repair and replacement Re-grouting swimming pools Electric box upgrading or replacement Repair pool cracks Pool liners New pump rooms Heat pump installation and repair Automatic and manual pool covers Salt water chlorination systems and automatic pH regulators Installation of spas and hot tubs Pool lighting Spa and hot tub supply and installation.

Surface Skimming

Acid wash and power wash pool tiles Sand change for pool filter (recommended every three years)

Hair, lint, leaves and insects which enter the pool and remain floating on the surface can be easily removed with surface skimmers. There are two types of surface skimmers-hand and automatic. The hand skimmer is simply a plastic screen or net attached to a long pole and should be used to remove the larger floating objects such as leaves and grass. The automatic surface skimmer is a device which is attached to the filtering system. During the filtering process, part of the surface water is drawn through the skimmer and into the filter, carrying with it dust, small insects, and other fine debris before these can settle to the pool floor. The pool should be skimmed frequently since most dirt enters the water through the surface.

POTENTIAL INVESTMENTS Buying a property abroad now – while prices are low – could pay dividends in the long term.

It

is everybody’s dream to own a gorgeous villa in the sun, a ski chalet to escape to in the winter, or a flat with a balcony in the heart of a favorite foreign city. But dreams aside, can owning a property abroad in the current climate make you any money? The answer is ‘YES’, but only if you take advantage of today’s low process and undertake scrupulous research. In most countries, the market has seen a continual downturn. The euro is in crisis. Stock markets are in freefall. And across the pond America’s annual budget deficit is measured in trillions. One by one the traditional house-hunters are turning there back on the old fashioned picturesque destinations which offered immediate growth and are instead looking at long term investment focused on referred markets chosen more on their potential as stable property havens.

Barbados Barbados retains an aura of prestige and a reputation as a good investment, its legal and political systems are similar to that of Britain’s. There are daily international flights from the UK, Canada and the US, so tourism and rental rates are high for holiday homeowners wanting to earn a living from their investment. Overseas buyers are welcome, and there is no capital gains tax plus mortgage availability, even for foreigners, remains good. John Morphet owns the Royal Westmoreland resort, where British sports stars including Wayne Rooney, Joe Calzaghe and Rio Ferdinand have villas. He says: “There’s been some discounting of property, up to 25 per cent, but on the west coast this hasn’t really been the case. The market for individual beachfront villas and constructed properties on gated communities has remained strong. Purchasers are more riskaverse, so prefer to buy somewhere built rather than off-plan.” Prices in Barbados are not cheap. Two-bedroom homes can cost €500,000 (£400,000) or more on the west coast, but properties are truly spectacular. Buyers tip: Some homes take years to sell. If you hear that a property has been on the market for a while, bargain hard.

Even when buying outside the Euro Zone and the United States, the best tactic is still to purchase more expensive homes in prime locations as the old adage goes “you pay for what you get!” This also means you will see the best the country has to offer, and your investment will stand a better chance of maintaining its value. Even at the top end, though, you have to be selective. Here is our guide to where and why to buy overseas to minimize your risk.

Canada The US housing market is in intensive care. One-in-four homes are in negative equity and mortgage foreclosures are rising. But across the border in Canada, the story is very different. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation predict sales and prices will rise by up to five per cent next year. With flights from the UK, and western Europe ranging from only five to seven hours’ and with plentiful leisure and ski resorts around Newfoundland and Quebec – Canada has long been a favourite destinations for Europeans alike. The country has a French-style buying process. A notary carries out conveyancing, and transaction costs are often 15 per cent of the price. You pay 25 per cent capital gains tax when you sell but, unlike the rest of North America, Canada is still seeing capital gains. Because space is plentiful, the choice is vast. There are ski chalets in Mont Tremblant, Quebec, for as little as €250,000 (£200,000) while timber lodges in parts of the Rockies can be priced even lower. Websites such as sportfishcanada.ca list private sales of cabins at modest prices. More flamboyant buyers may prefer Nova Scotia’s spectacular coastline. Buyers tip: Offers are normally made in writing, accompanied by a deposit, so can be hard to withdraw.

The Cayman Islands The Caymans are home to more than 200 banks and expats from 100 countries. They also boast the world’s 14th highest GDP per capita, and the highest standard of living in the Caribbean. The country has the confidence of many from around the globe. Little Cayman (10 miles by one mile, population 150) and Cayman Brac (11 miles by two miles, population 1,800) are relatively untouched. Grand Cayman is bigger and blingier, attracting tax haven lovers as well as those who want sandy beaches and sun. Buyers tip: Many foreigners buy land and build their own homes, but imported construction materials attract up to 22% tax.

Switzerland

Mauritius

Knight Frank Real Estate says 12% of buyers in Switzerland are from the UK, with Russia, Germany, France and Asia close behind. They come for three reasons: to improve their skiing, for their tax status and for stable house prices. Though there were falls of 15% in French-speaking parts of Switzerland in 2008, in 2012 we have seen an increase of 4.2% in property prices with an increase of 6.1% in construction

Long a favourite with holidaymakers, this island is now open to foreign buyers for the first time thanks to a new scheme to encourage investment. Most people would be happy enjoying the water-sports, unspoilt beaches and charming villages that dot this Indian Ocean idyll, but now there are financial perks too.

“Montreux, on Lake Geneva in Vaud, continues to defy the market conditions of its neighbours,” says Alexander Koch de Gooreynd of Knight Frank. “It’s one of the few lakeside locations in Switzerland with permission for foreigners to buy as a secondary residence.” It also hosts a world-famous annual jazz festival. Buyers tip: Each area has different rules regarding maximum sizes of homes foreign purchasers can buy, so do your research.

If you pay €385,000 (£310,000) or more for a villa or apartment in a designated coastal zone, you will also have the right to become a Mauritian resident, and enjoy low levels of personal and business tax plus relax in the knowledge that the economy has grown at an average of 4 % a year for the past eight years. For details of the government foreign ownership scheme, IRS, see maurinet.com. Buyers tip: Island transport is slow, so buy near Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius.

Gibraltar

Hong Kong

Little wonder Spain wants to govern Gibraltar. This tiny British colony, still reminiscent of a sunny Sixties Saturday in Surrey, is a haven of stability compared to its mainland neighbour. Better yet, the Rock has no VAT, no capital gains or inheritance tax and relatively low income tax. As well as financial services, shipping and tourism, its economy is geared to telecoms and internet gaming. The latter is a growing sector that now accounts for 11% of gross domestic product (GDP).

Crowded, flooded by neon lights as far as the eyes can see, street markets and overlooked by sumptuous tower blocks.

Buying in Gibraltar is easy, but there are eccentricities. You pay a 2% deposit when you exchange contracts. Many homes are flats, so you should budget for service charges too and most homes are only leaseholds. Gibraltar has a permanent resident’s population of over 30,000 ranking it among one of the world’s most crowded locations so if your looking for open fields and space this is not the place for you! Buyers tip: Watch out as Gibraltar has complicated stamp duty rules, which vary from zero to 5.5 % of the purchase price.

The local housing market in Hong King is booming, because it is no longer reliant just on foreign buyers. Chinese mainland purchasers now account for a third of all deals. One-bedroom flats go from 250,000 (£200,000) upwards but even so, demand for homes outstrips supply by 20%, according to the Hong Kong Housing Authority. Similarly, Knight Frank says house prices have risen 8.4% in the past year and about 80 per cent since mid-2005. Yet experts insist this is sustainable. “Given the continual support from mainland buyers and the limited supply of homes – especially high-end ones – rental prices are predicted to grow steadily Buyers tip: Best-value areas are Southside, The Peak, Discovery Bay and Kowloon.

Philippe Starck

W

henever we discover an object or a place designed by Philippe Starck, we enter a world of wall-to-wall imagination, surprises and fabulous fantasy. For more than four decades, this unique and multifarious creator, designer and architect has been a part of our daily lives by creating unconventional objects, whose purpose is to be “good” before being beautiful; iconic destinations, that take the people out of themselves and, most importantly, steer them towards something better. “My father was an aeronautical engineer. For me it was a duty to invent”.

Philippe Starck was born on the 18th January 1949 in Paris. His father, an inventor and aeronautic engineer, gave the young Philippe Starck the desire to create and the capacity to dream. Much of his childhood was spent hanging around the drawing tables of his father and he retains his father’s primary lesson: everything should be organised elegantly and rigorously, in human relationships as much as in the concluding vision that presides over every creative gesture. Starck first became interested in living spaces while studying at Ecole Nissim de Camondo in Paris. In 1969 he designed an inflatable house based on an “idea of materiality” this brought him to the attention of Pierre Cardin who offered him the job of artistic director at his publishing house. Starck then founded his first industrial design company STARCK PRODUCTS, which he later renamed Ubik, here he designed furniture for leading Italian and international firms, and in 1982, Starck was commissioned to work for

“I have this mental sickness called creativity”

P re s i d e n t F r a n ç o i s Mitterrand to redecorate the private residence at the Elysée Palace. Philippe Starck then turned his creative genius to hotel. Starck, designs his hotels and restaurants in the same way a director makes a film. He develops scenarios that will lift people out of the everyday and into an imaginative and creative mental world. His hotels have become timeless icons in 1988 Starck was commissioned by famed nightclub impresario Ian Schrager, former co-owner of Studio 54, to refit the Royalton Hotel on New York’s West 44th Street. It was a design moment that has since changed the hotel industry by creating the boutique hotel concept. The Starck-Schrager hotel partnerships continued in New York at the Paramount hotel, and then spread to Miami with the opening of the Delano Hotel in South Beach in 1995, to Los Angeles with the Mondrian Hotel in December 1996, to London with both the St. Martins Lane hotel in 1999 and the Sanderson hotel in 2000 to San Francisco and the Clift hotel, and finally back to New York with the Hudson hotel. There are few areas of design he hasn’t explored: from furniture to mail-order homes, motorbikes, to mega yachts which have been sold at prices of over $300 million, to everyday consumer products including toothbrushes and toothpaste sanitizers, fruit juicers, watches, wireless speakers for iPod and iPhone even artistic direction for space-travel projects, he was commissioned to design the Virgin Galactic “spaceport” in New Mexico. His most recognized design is the Ghost Chair used within the “Ugly Betty Series”.

Philippe Starck “No one has to be a genius, but everyone has to participate.” Philippe Starck believed in the concept of eco living long before ecology became fashionable, out of respect for the planet’s survival. Early on in his career, he created the Good Goods catalogue of nonproducts for non-consumers in tomorrow’s moral market, and set up his own organic food company. More recently he has developed the revolutionary concept of “democratic ecology” by creating affordable wind turbines for the home, “Ecology is not just an urgency of the economy and protection of our world but also creativity and elegance”. Starck also plans to follow this with solar-powered boats and hydrogen cars. For the future Philippe Starck implores, “Let’s offer our children another history, another romanticism” Philippe Starck is a tireless and rebellious citizen of the world who considers it his duty to share his ethical and subversive vision of a fairer world. He stays tuned in to our dreams, desires and needs - sometimes before we get there ourselves by making his work a political and civic act which he accomplishes with love, poetry and humour. The thousands of projects - complete or forthcoming - his global fame and tireless protean inventiveness should never distract from Philippe Starck’s fundamental vision: Creation, whatever form it takes, must improve the lives of as many people as possible. Philippe Starck vehemently believes this poetic and political duty, rebellious and benevolent, pragmatic and subversive, should be shared by everyone and he sums it up with the humour that has set him apart from the very beginning: “No one has to be a genius, but everyone has to participate.” Inventor, creator, architect, designer, artistic director, Philippe Starck is certainly all of the above, but more than anything else he is an honest man directly descended from the Renaissance artists.

Wonders of Wood Part One Wood is one of the most appealing materials at an architect or designer’s finger tips. Wood is versatile, renewable, attractive and cost effective. It’s also flexible enough to create anything from strikingly innovative designs to simple, economical structures. It’s surprising how much of our world is and has been built and furnished by wood - be it what we sit around to eat on, lie on at the end of the day, or simply walk around, under or in between. Furniture made of wood is one of the few things in the world that all people can own and know that they are the only person in the world who owns that particular grain pattern and its inherent beauty. Each grain pattern is a unique masterpiece of design, texture and splendour. Even what some may view as a defect, like a knot or other natural blemishes, can add more beauty and character to any given piece of furniture. The classification of wood has historically always been either hard wood; any leaf bearing tree, and soft wood; any cone bearing tree. These terms can be confusing since some leaf bearing trees can have very soft wood and some coniferous trees can have very hard woods. To make this easier, below we take a list different tree types, classification and then individual wood characteristics within the Hardwood family.

HARDWOODS

Uses: Mahogany is used extensively in the crafting of exquisite period reproduction furniture. Mahogany is also now being used for the bodies of high-end stereo headphones, where it is noted for “warm” or “musical” sound.

OAK: Oak is the most widely used hardwood. There are more than 500 - 600 species of oak grown across the plane. Properties: Oak is a heavy, strong, light coloured hardwood. It is ring porous, due to the fact that more and larger conductive vessels are laid down early in the summer, rather than later. Prominent rings and large pores give oak a course texture and prominent grain.

OAK

Properties: A moderately hard, strong, closed grain, light to red-brown wood, cherry resists warping and checking. It is easy to carve and polish.

Uses: Oak is the most popular wood used in furniture design, flooring, kitchen design, palettes and firewood. MAPLE: There are 200 species of maple. Properties: Maple is so hard and resistant to shocks that it is often used for bowling alley floors. Its diffuse evenly sized pores give the wood a fine texture and even grain. Maple that has a curly grain is often used for violin backs (the pattern formed is known as fiddleback figure). Burls, leaf figure, and birds-eye figures found in maple are used extensively for veneers. The Birds eye figure in maple is said to be the result of stunted growth and is quite rare. Uses: Maple is used extensively in flooring (from basketball courts and dance-floors to bowling alleys and residential), veneer, pulpwood, musical instruments, cutting boards, butcher blocks, workbenches, baseball bats, and other turned objects and specialty wood items. It can also be stained to simulate cherry wood, which it resembles. MAHOGANY: Mahogany is one of the most outstanding materials for the manufacturing of fine furniture. Mahogany wood is valued because it is durable and can be carved with intricate details. It has a deep, rich color, attractive grain, stains beautifully, and glues solidly onto manufactured products. Mahogany was first imported to Europe in 1724, and it soon became famous because of the gracefully ornate furniture that Chippendale, an English cabinet maker, began to make from the wood. The most valuable raw product produced from mahogany wood is solid lumber, which can then be manufactured into expensive furniture and cabinets. However, solid mahogany is a very expensive material, and is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. As a result, mahogany is now used to manufacture a veneer product, in which a core of inferior wood is covered with a thin layer of mahogany. Properties: Mahogany is strong, with a uniform pore structure and poorly defined annual rings. It has a reddish - brown color and may display stripe, ribbon, broken stripe, rope, ripple, mottle, fiddleback or blister figures. Crotch mahogany figures are widely used and greatly valued. Mahogany is an excellent carving wood and finishes well

CHERRY: Cherry is grown in the Eastern half of the U.S. It is sometimes called fruitwood. The term fruitwood is also used to describe a light brown finish on other woods.

MAPLE

Uses: Cherry wood is used in furniture design and more predominantly in kitchenalia (salad bowls, cutting boards) WALNUT: Walnut is one of the most versatile and popular cabinet making woods. It grows in Europe, America and Asia. There are many different varieties.

MAHOGANY

CHERRY

Properties: Walnut is strong, hard and durable, without being excessively heavy. It has excellent woodworking qualities, and takes finishes well. The wood is light to dark chocolate brown in colour with a straight grain in the trunk. Wavy grain is present toward the roots, and walnut stumps are often dug out and used as a source of highly figured veneer. Large burls are common. Walnut solids and veneers show a wide range of figures, including strips, burls, mottles, crotches, curls and butts. European walnut is lighter in colour and slightly finer in texture than American black walnut, but otherwise comparable. Uses: Walnut is used in all types of fine cabinet work, especially 18th century reproductions, flooring, stringed musical instruments and carvings. ROSEWOOD: Very hard and has a dark reddish brown colour. It is fragrant and close grained. It is hard to work and takes high polish.

WALNUT

Used in musical instruments, piano cases, tool handles art projects, veneers and furniture. TEAK: True teak is indigenous to Southeast Asia, but similar wood species also grow in Africa.

ROSEWOOD

TEAK

Properties: Teak is a yellow to dark brown hardwood which is extremely heavy, strong and durable. Teak, though easily worked, can cause severe blunting on edged tools because of the presence of silica in the wood. Teak’s natural oils make it useful in exposed locations, and make the timber termite and pest resistant. Teak is durable even when not treated with oil or varnish. Uses: It carves well, but because of its high value, is often used as a veneer, it is used for chess & board games, Scandinavian and oriental furniture, outdoor furniture, boat decks, and other products that need to be “weather resistant.”
