And then there was light Hermès launches lighting collection at Salone del Mobile Hermès chose the spectacular late 18thcentury Palazzo Serbelloni in Milan as the atmospheric setting in which to launch the fourth edition of its home collection, Hermès en lumière, which includes lighting for the first time. Hermès presented three LED lighting collections and although each was very different in form, all exhibited the brand’s DNA with finely crafted materials and frames elegantly wrapped in their signature leather. The Lanterne d’ Hermès was designed by the French light scenographer Yann Kersalé. A modular light with a rechargeable battery, it takes its cues from sailing or old carriage lamps, and can be used indoors or out. Pantographe and Harnais, inspired by an architect’s drawing implement and Hermes’s equestrian heritage respectively, were both designed by Michele de Lucchi, whom Hélène Dubrule. The large articulated floor light, Lampadaire Arche, from the Pantographe range is particularly refined with its slender frame, double-dimmer system, and silk twill shade. It even features a leather-covered flex. Also on display were new re-editions of a chair, console and bench by Jean-Michel Frank that were first designed with Hermès in 1924. The brand’s collaboration with French designer Philippe Nigro continues apace in the form of the Curiosités d’ Hermès, a series of three furniture pieces inspired by the “cabinets of old” and created to “bring surprise and unexpected delight”. These are based around the indulgent daily rituals life such as taking care of one’s shoes, afternoon tea and cocktail hour. he rocky outcrop with spectacular views of the Johannesburg skyline inspired the additions and alterations of this contemporary home. Built from steel, stone and glass, the home was developed to maximize the surrounding views, making use of the natural features without compromising the contemporary flowing aspect of the architectural design. The existing entrance into the house was originally at the top of the site. The new entrance to the re-designed home, which was transformed into a three storey mansion, was created on the lower ground floor with an internal staircase leading up to the ground floor living area. The ground floor is an open plan living area with a double volume living room leading out onto the lanai and pool, this area has spectacular views to the north and west. The kitchen has views to both the north and south, from here you can also access the lanai and living area.


The ground floor living areas were designed around the pool, which is a prominent feature of this custom design. The spillover detail of this cantilevered pool creates a seamless integration with the views across the city. A bridge links opposite sides of the main and family bedroom suites, which all have wrap around balconies that maximise the surrounding views and make provision for outdoor living. M Square Lifestyle Design meticulously chose a colour palette to compliment the colours that were used in the building’s structural elements and used materials matching the structural elements.


The furniture pieces were sourced from M Square Lifestyle Necessities, this includes items from Molteni and C, Floss and Kundalini. abric structures, such as shade sails, combine traditional building materials, metal, wood, stone, and glass – with a fabric membrane, typically designed under very high tension. The most common application is the traditional awning, however shade sails, tension membranes, and retractable fabric rooves are becoming increasingly popular as people discover their cost and environmental benefits. Shade Sails are pieces of fabric designed to create large shaded spaces. The concept of creating spaces with large pieces of material is not new. The existence of shade sails can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians and later the Greeks and Romans, where they were used to shade the crowds in The Coliseum of Rome. The Roman Armies were shaded from the draining effects of the sun with shade sails during wartime. It is a concept recently rediscovered in Australia in the early 1970’s and spreading around the world. Shade Sails are four sided polygons and triangular pieces of fabric resembling the shape of ship’s sails around the 1800’s. They can be secured directly to a house, posts or trees, and they are ideally suited in situations where a

minimum number of posts are required. When incorporated within existing architecture, large spaces can be repurposed. Fabric structures have massive advantages over structures made from traditional materials. They are lightweight and incorporate a lot less material, they can be efficiently engineered and installed, and structures such as shade sails can involve complex 3D geometrical patterns that enable unlimited scope in architectural creativity. Most importantly, however, shade sails and shade sail structures can be manufactured to have an extremely low environmental impact. Materials can be used that are 100% recyclable, and because of their lightweight nature they cut down dramatically on supporting structure requirements. Plus the shade sail fabric allows natural lighting whilst reflecting radiant heat, reducing energy requirements and utility costs. All in all, the introduction of well designed shade sails or fabric structures into your home or workplace will create a wonderful aesthetic, whilst importantly minimising the impact of your footprint on the environment.

Extempore trendsetter and classic If Extremis can take credit for anything, it is the enormous boost it gave to outdoor design furniture in the last decade. In the mid nineties, that market was not nearly as large as now. In its early years, Extremis had to grow step by step and Dirk Wynants had to concentrate more on the business side than on the design side of his young company, which targeted multiple foreign markets right from the start. After the launch of Gargantua in 1994, it would take Extremis four years to introduce the Extempore range, which has in the meantime become a real design classic signed Arnold Merckx.

Comprehensive range If you take a contemporary view of Extempore, you probably wouldn’t find it very innovative. In 1998 however, combining wood and aluminium was really trendsetting. Caribbean Islands offering a piece of paradise by selling citizenship’s Are you fed up with your home country, want to pay lower taxes, enjoy the freedom to travel and strive for a higher quality of life? Well, if you have as little as $100,000 then you could buy citizenship to a tiny, tropical Caribbean nation that ticks all of those boxes and then some.

St. Kitts and Nevis Cash for citizenship is an easy concept to understand. It best applies to just two countries in the world -- both of which happen to be in the Caribbean -- and are 100% legal and can happen in as little as a few months. The smallest nation in all of the Americas, the island federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, tempts would-be citizens with more than just tropical breezes, swaying palm trees and white sand beaches. It also touts no personal income tax, the allowance for multiple-citizenship and visa-free access to nearly 130 countries and territories, the program is open to all nationalities except Iranian. Established in 1984, St. Kitts and Nevis’ citizenship-by-investment scheme is the longest-running program in the world and offers two avenues to a new passport. The cheaper option requires a $250,000 contribution to the country’s Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation. The second option is purchasing real estate investment to the value of $400,000 +.  At present the government website lists nearly 60 approved developments such as; Sundance Ridge, Calypso Bay and Windswept Residence which accept these types of investments. An additional $50,000 application fee and a $7,500 “due diligence fee” exist on top of the investment amount however once approved the new citizens will enjoy visa-free access to nearly 120 countries, which include the United Kingdom, France and Canada. Among four package options, a single applicant investment requires just a $100,000 deposit to the National Bank of Dominica, the country’s largest financial institution. The investment amount doubles for a family of four. Applicants must be of “outstanding character,” must wait “at least eight weeks” for approval and must have a “basic level” of English, according to Dominica’s website detailing the citizenship path. 184

Grenada The new Grenada Citizenship by Investment  program is the hot news in the citizenship-by-investment world these days. Unlike in some other similar residency and citizenship programs, you can participate in the Grenadian citizenship program by invitation only.  The main applicant and their family members will be approved individually by the Government of Grenada through a strict “know your client”  procedure. This approach aims to preserve the prestige and the value of the Grenadian citizenship and passport. A project which is exactly what Blackshaw Interior Design has become known for, taking a house apart and then putting it back together again in a modern, aesthetically pleasing way. Experts in this field of work, we are becoming market leaders. WHY? because by working with a trusted team of skilled craftsmen who are able to deliver the project on time bringing to life everything the clients had in mind. The Project - Las Brisas: A project like this starts with a design fee which enables our design team to make a complete design study. This involves a lot of hours of drawings plans, offering 2D and 3D options. Once the clients are happy with the schemes we have put together along with the complete construction and furnishing quotes we can get to work. This also includes our project management, putting together the contractor team, and negotiating entirely for the client on their behalf throughout. This particular project took approximately 4 months from start to finish. The villa was in need of complete modernisation for an English families second home in the heart of

the Golf Valley Nueva Andalucía. The once loved chintzy pelmets, and beige bathroom suites were not to their liking or ours for that matter. We created our signiture look of home from home feel, updated contemporary and welcoming. Outside we redesigned and enlarged the swimming pool, making the pool stairs and aqua (effect with white tiles) coloured water the first things you see on your approach down the stairs, through the double doors into the lounge. The other most important thing is curb appeal, you want your house to look like the best house on the street, the one everyone’s talking about. The curved wall, and overgrown shrubs were just too much. We wanted straight lines, saying this house is taken care of, strong and secure, with huge wooden and chrome sliding gates to replace the old iron ones. Up and down contemporary lights finished off the streamlined look. Other construction details included making the whole interior shared living space open plan, but cleverly giving each section its identity. The log burning 3 sided fire which can be enjoyed from all angles ties the space together. There really isn’t one piece of the house which hasn’t been replaced or at least given some updating.

Obviously the clients are rest assured that they have brand new electrical, plumbing, under floor heating, air-conditioning throughout, and all the latest technology. We chose porcelain wood effect flooring, which is homely and easy to maintain. PVC windows, secure, made from sustainable materials, and the best insulation systems. Ceiling design often overlooked also played a really important role in our project, as it enabled us to hide A/C ducting, and also create great lighting effects, with drop ceilings for LED spotlights, and recessed LED lighting effects on all the dimmers. In the bathrooms and kitchen we can also create ambience lighting effects with LED behind mirrors and under units, counters. It really is a cost effective way of making a difference. The furnishings where all coordinated to fit in with the style of the new house, with lots of communication between ourselves and the clients. Accents colours, luxury silks and velvets, against cool lacquers and dark black or grey oak wood. With years of experience working with brands and manufacturers we know who to rely on for quality, cost and deadlines. All of our soft furnishings are made on site, so we really can control the quality and make design decisions quickly.
