In my life, there have been many songwriters and their songs that have touched my soul. But the one that has really got me here lately is someone who has been around a few years and I had not heard of. John Lennon once said, “All You Need Is Love” and it is with that sentiment in this issue we are focusing on love.

What exactly makes for a great love song? Is it an over-sharing of emotions? Is it the mood of a song? Perhaps it could be a sense of longing, loss, or desire. For me, it may be a bit of all of those things.

Clearly love is a complicated feeling. One that we can share, or harbor alone. When it comes to love songs, the most poignant one, for me, would have to be “Romeo and Juliet” by Dire Straits.

Not only is it one of my favorite songs, but it is one I feel we all can appreciate if we’ve ever loved and not had the feeling reciprocated.

Written in 1980 by guitarist Mark Knopfler, the song appeared on Dire Straits classic album, “Making Movies” and would be released as a single in 1981. While the title of the song draws immediate recognition to the Shakesperian Romeo and Juliet: the lyrics modernize the lovers tale, and even makes references to the musical “West Side Story” while still telling the real life breakup of Knopfler and former girlfriend Holly Vincent.

Vincent was the lead singer in a band called Holly and the Italians, a short lived act that never really achieved any fame.

I’m purely speculating here, but I’m willing to bet Vincent has achieved more fame being the antagonist in Romeo and Juliet than her musical skills ever took her.

Romeo and Juliet tells the tale of two lovers whose relationship ends as Juliet finds fame and success outside of her hometown and leaves her Romeo behind. A narrative that Knopfler believed to be the case with him and Vincent. Once her band began to get some recognition, she ended things with him, despite his love for her still being strong.

Knopfler believed she had just used him to boost her career, and that he was “just another one of (her) your deals.’

The beautifully written song tugs at your heart strings. While Juliet is chasing fame, Romeo is left behind. Love throws many obstacles at us. Some can be very unforeseen, unexpected, or even selfish. At the end of the day, our Romeo must ask himself, is it better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all?
