LIFESTYLE UPDATE Independence Day Celebration Breakfast & Show We invite you to come and celebrate Independence Day with us on Friday, July 1st at 9am in the Ballroom. Our very own Theatre Club has been hard at work preparing for their performance of The House I Live In, a lighthearted comedy that our very own, talented Clair Welti wrote. We extend a big thank you to the American Legion Post 142, who will be presenting the colors and Ryan, who will be treating you to a delicious American breakfast. This is a traditional celebration you will not want to miss. We are thrilled to be able to celebrate this holiday with all of you.

Happy 4th of July We hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday with friends and family. We are so lucky to live in the USA, and we thank our many Veterans who have allowed us so many freedoms! Just a few reminders on this Fourth of July holiday: the Community Center will be staffed from 9am-5pm. Please remember to check in your guests during staffed hours so they can join you in the facilities. There will be no fitness classes, and the Poolside Café will be closed so staff can enjoy time with their families at home. We look forward to seeing everyone back in classes and enjoying some of Ryan’s delicious food the day after. Holiday Children’s Swim If you have grandkids visiting you for the Fourth of July, then we have the perfect activity for you. Guests under the age of 18 years are welcome to enjoy the Outdoor Pool (provided they are out of diapers and potty trained) during these special Holiday Children’s Swim hours of 12-3:30pm on Saturday, July 2nd. Please note that the Indoor Pool is reserved for Residents and their adult guests during this time, and children should remain in the Outdoor Pool only. It’s hot out there, and the kiddos need to burn off some energy, so bring them down to take a dip in the refreshing Outdoor Pool. Blood Drive is Back! We are excited to have the Red Cross back to run a blood drive on Tuesday, July 14th, from 9:30am-2:30pm. If you have not given blood before, it is a very easy process. The teams will get you in and out quickly; they are very efficient. The Red Cross really depends on SunRiver St George to hold our blood drives because our Residents are very generous, and they can be counted on to satisfy the need for blood for patients in Washington County. on your birthday month in 2022. We are excited to have Eric Dodge back to perform for us and teach line dance lessons. Come learn some new moves, dance, or sit back and relax to the music. Save the date so you are one of the first to get your tickets; we hope this event will sell out! Poolside Café Don’t forget to visit the Poolside Café on Saturdays; we are here to serve you six days a week! Bus Trips We are looking at several upcoming bus trips. We want to hear from you about trips such as NASCAR, the Shakespeare Festival, an Aviators baseball game, shopping, a Cirque du Soleil show, and a wine country trip. These tickets will be announced via email when they are put up for sale, and we will post a few questionnaires on the Association News to help us gather more information from all of you to best choose the trips.

COMPUTER / PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB Did you know? Due to the dedicated efforts of these teachers (see below), the SunRiver Computer & Photography Club continues to provide classes and user groups that cover a broad range of technologies! The club offers monthly classes that cover various topics on Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC, genealogy/genealogy DNA, photography, photo editing, and the SunRiverStGeorge.com website. In addition, there are usually additional classes scheduled to provide Residents with updated information on a wide range of topics. We maintain current versions of software such as MS Office 365, Open Office, Libre, several photo editing programs, and so much more. Classes meant to assist members with using the equipment in the room, such as VHS to DVD conversion, slide and photograph scanning, and converting your old LPs to digital, are also offered. POTTERY HORSEHAIR FIRING AT THE POTTERY STUDIO On Friday, May 27th, the Kindred Spirits Pottery Studio had what is usually a twice-a-year Horsehair Firing in the Raku Kiln. Specifically used for this purpose, the Raku Kiln fires between 1300-1800 degrees Fahrenheit. While this is the dramatic, final phase of a horsehair piece, a lot of work precedes the kiln fire. The potter must first make a successful pot. The pot’s surface must then be prepared to best accept the horsehair or feathers for a good image. For this, the clay surface receives several coatings of terra sigillata, a slip made with clay, water, and deflocculant. When mixed and left to settle, the top will be a watery solution and the bottom a sludge. The middle is the terra sigillata and the only portion of the mixture that is used. Each coating is burnished, leaving the surface very smooth, which is the best condition for a clear carbon residue. Back to the Raku Kiln: the kiln is heated, the pots are placed inside, and the cover lowered. When the kiln reaches the correct temperature, the pieces are carefully removed with long tongs and long leather protective gloves. As a few horse hairs or feathers are dropped onto the very hot surface of the pottery, they sizzle and burn, and their texture leaves a carbon marking on the surface of the vessel. When cool, the pottery piece is washed to remove ash residue, and then wax can be used to give a sheen to the surface of the pot. The finished pieces are for decorative use only and are not considered food safe. This is a very elaborate process, and we potters all admire the skills of the few of us that attempt this beautiful art.

Tips for summer hiking in the Southern Utah heat are to hydrate, hike in the morning, pick a “summertime” trail, wear the proper clothing, replenish your electrolytes, and know the signs of heat stroke. Please be safe and smart with your summer hiking.

PEGS & JOKERS CLUB Not only do we have a great time learning and playing Pegs and Jokers, but we also know how to throw a party! Lots of delicious pizza and a custom salad bar. Fifty club members enjoyed all they wanted. Dinner was followed by our usual, friendly game of P&J. It is so fun to just listen to the murmur of conversations, the laughter, and the occasional outburst of exclamation. New friendships are created here. Now is a great time to come learn this fascinating game. There is always a newcomer’s table with experienced players anxious to teach you the game. Play begins at 6pm on Thursday evenings in the Multi-Purpose Room except for the first Thursday of the month, when we meet in the Ballroom. Please come a little early for table selection and set up.

SWIM CLUB Now that summer is here; our aqua classes are busier than ever. We had 720 participants in our aqua classes last month. If you have never taken an aqua class, you should try it. It is a lowimpact workout that builds muscle strength and boosts your endurance. It’s fun, and it can be as challenging as you like. Water aerobics class typically lasts 45 minutes. The instructor (and we have the best instructors here at SunRiver St George) will lead you through a series of moves, often set to music to keep you motivated. The buoyancy of the water is easy on your joints. That makes water aerobics a good choice if you have joint problems, chronic pain, or are recovering from injury. Though it is low-impact, you can make the workout harder. For example, do more repetitions of each move or go faster during the workout. Water aerobics helps improve your flexibility. It will get your heart rate pumping. The resistance of the water helps tone muscles and builds strength. We have several different types of aqua classes here at SunRiver St George including Aqua Yoga. Please check the Fitness Calendar for classes and times. Water exercise can even put you in a better frame of mind. So, grab your swimsuit, head down to the pool, and have some fun.

PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE Are You Prepared? Why is there a SunRiver St George Preparedness Committee? Unfortunately, in the event of a disaster, help may not be immediately available from the services we normally rely on. The federal government (FEMA) says that, in the event of a disaster, people should be prepared to take care of themselves for up to 72 hours. Their theory is that within three days, the federal government will be able to mobilize services and resources and have them in place. The purpose of the SunRiver St George Preparedness Committee is to provide Residents with information to prepare themselves for the time immediately following a disaster. The SunRiver St George CERT program teaches its members that their first responsibility is themselves and their family, then, if they are able, to assist others. You should know how to prepare yourself for an emergency. In September, there will be a presentation in the Community Center on sheltering in place, presented by Station 8 of the St. George Fire Department (the one by SunRiver St George). Although the fire department is technically responsible for providing emergency services, they recognize that in a disaster, they cannot provide all services to all people. They are looking forward to coming and talking with SunRiver St George Residents. We encourage everyone to attend this presentation to learn the techniques and simple materials required to shelter in place and understand when they might be needed. If you haven’t registered for reverse 911, please do so. We live in a quiet, safe area and have little in the way of dangerous situations. However, occasionally there is a flood risk or unfortunate event on the freeway. With reverse 911, we can be instantly apprised of a problem and what safety actions to take. To register, go online to 911register.com; there is no cost.

Hurray for the Red, White, and Blue! What a time to remember those heroes who fought for this country and our freedom. Our U.S. Armed Forces are still doing it today, and we salute you! Meditation The Breath Life is breath…breath is life. Our journey on this planet begins with our first breath and ends with our last, but we often take breathing for granted. In meditation, we learn to pay attention to our breath. When our attention wanders, we return our attention to our breath. We learn different breathing techniques for different purposes. Deep breathing helps with stress and anxiety. By breathing slowly and deeply, you signal your nervous system to calm. Box breathing is a stress reducer. Inhale to the count of four. Hold your breath for a count of four. Exhale to the count of four. Hold for a count of four and repeat several times. Ujjayi breathing is often called Darth Vader breath. It is caused by a slight constriction in the back of the throat (the glottis). It sounds somewhat like snoring. It is a strong, fiery breath. If you use this technique with a strong breath, you can draw your attention to your breath. Then begin to slow it down to a softer Ujjayi sound and experience the calming effects this breath can bring. Belly breathing is diaphragmatic breathing. It is done by sitting up straight (or lying down) and breathing deeply until you feel as if your belly balloon is filling with air. Then exhale until your belly contracts. It slows your heart rate and can stabilize your blood pressure. It increases oxygen absorption and makes it easier to eliminate carbon dioxide. 4-7-8 breathing helps you sleep. Start by putting the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth, just behind your front teeth. Keep your tongue there. Breathe out through the mouth. Breathe in through the nose to a count of four. Hold your breath to a count of seven, then breathe out through the mouth to a count of eight. Repeat this three times. (This is not one we practice during meditation. We don’t want folks drifting off and falling off their chairs). Alternate nostril breathing is a technique with several variations. They all involve breathing in or out with one nostril at a time. SCIENCE CLUB Volcanic Activity in Southern Utah One can see evidence of a lot of volcanic activity while driving through southern Utah. The old airport was built upon the top of a flood basalt. Volcanic cinder cones dot the landscape on Highway 18. As recently as 15 to 20 thousand years ago, lava flowed through parts of Entrada and Santa Clara. This month we are fortunate to have a geologist and interpretive park ranger to discuss past volcanic activity in southern Utah. Jeff Axel directs Visitor Services in Parashant, part of Grand Canyon National Park. If you have ever driven south on River Road along the dirt road trek to the Toroweap viewpoint of the Grand Canyon, you have driven through Parashant. Enjoy a rare opportunity to learn about our local volcanic history from an expert who regularly delivers programs to our National Park Service. Jeff will take you back through geologic time to witness how volcanism transformed our Southern Utah landscape. This program begins at our Community Center Ballroom on Tuesday, July 12, at 5:30pm. Doors open at 5pm. You must purchase tickets in advance. Popcorn tickets cost $1.50. Chef Ryan’s wrap tickets cost $5.50. We will also have a Zoom program. The Zoom program is free, and it begins promptly at 5:00pm on Thursday, July 14th.
