Lifestyle Update

Thanksgiving History

Most of the credit for the establishment of an annual Thanksgiving holiday may be given to Sarah Josepha Hale. Editor of Ladies’ Magazine and Godey’s Lady’s Book, she began to rally for such a day in 1827 by printing articles in the magazines. She also published stories and recipes and wrote scores of letters to governors, senators, and presidents. After 36 years of crusading, she won her battle. On October 3rd, 1863, buoyed by the Union victory at Gettysburg, President Lincoln proclaimed that November 26th would be a national Thanksgiving Day, to be observed every year on the fourth Thursday of November.

Only twice has a president changed the day of observation. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in order to give depression-era merchants more selling days before Christmas, assigned the third Thursday to be Thanksgiving Day in 1939 and 1940. But he was met with popular resistance, largely because the change required rescheduling Thanksgiving Day events such as football games and parades. In 1941, a Congressional Joint Resolution officially set the fourth Thursday of November as a national holiday for Thanksgiving.

Today, Thanksgiving is the time when families come together and create their own traditions and celebrations. One of my family’s favorite traditions is each day in the month of November; we write down one thing we are thankful for. It reminds us to be grateful and thankful for the many blessings we are each given.

From all the PMP Staff: we wish you and your family a very safe and happy Thanksgiving and hope you are able to gather with friends and family and enjoy your own special traditions.

Arts & Crafts Boutique

We invite everyone to come shopping on Saturday, November 5th, from 9am-3pm. There are so many amazing crafters that will be showcasing, displaying, and selling one-of-a-kind items that would be perfect for that special person on your holiday shopping list. As a reminder, this is a very popular event that is open to the public, so the parking lot will be full and busy. There is overflow parking located at the Golf Course. If you do not want to shop, we suggest coming to use the facilities later in the day, as the parking lot will be full of shoppers eager to get that special gift.

Gregg Peterson Concert

By popular demand, we have booked the Gregg Peterson Band, Casablanca’s house band. This very popular band can play hits from almost every decade, which are well-loved by many Residents. Gregg and his band will be traveling from Las Vegas just to perform for SunRiver St George. Join us at the Golf Course on Saturday, November 5th, from 4:30-6:30pm. Get ready to dance because this band loves to play dancing music. Tickets are only $9.00, so gather up your friends and come down for an amazing evening. We are hoping to sell at least 300 tickets for this event; let’s show Gregg that SunRiver St George can have just as much fun as the big city of Las Vegas!

Lap Swimming

Lap Swim hours are as follows: Outdoor Pool - Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: 7-7:45am and 5-7pm Tuesday and Thursday: 7-9am Indoor Pool - Monday through Friday: 7-9am and 5-7pm

The community pools are designed for many types of activities and shared use. When coming to use the pools, please be aware that others may be using a part of the pool for their activities. When a class is being taught, only those in the class may be in the pool. When the pool is designated for lap swimming, anybody can enter the pool, but one must yield space to lap swimmers. They have priority during lap swim hours. Lap swimmers are welcome to swim outside of the designated hours, provided they work together with everyone in the pool.

2

All forms of pool use are permitted, but if you might intrude on somebody’s space, politely ask permission to do what you desire and be willing to accept “No” for an answer. Generally, the pool is large, and the crowds are small. Simple courtesy will allow all of us to enjoy whatever water activity we prefer, and the best scenario is one where everyone works together in the pool to respect each other’s space and get along.

We are asking for feedback from those who use the pools; please send your suggestions to SR-Admin@PMPmanage.com. We want to avoid over-restricting each pool’s use, but we also want to help foster good communication between users so we can avoid conflict. We thank you for your suggestions and hope you enjoy the last few days of the Outdoor Pool.

Thursday, November 3rd – National Sandwich Day - Cuban Sandwich

Friday, November 11th – National Sundae Day – Ice cream Sundaes

Reserved Seating vs. Opening Seating

I have heard from several Residents about the pros and cons of both reserved and open seating at events. We know there are benefits to both. Reserved seating eliminates the need for a long line at check-in, as you do not need to be early to hold your favorite seat. Also, reserved seating allows Residents to purchase tickets near friends. There are also benefits to open seating; it allows for flexibility, and Residents can wait until the event to decide where to sit. It can also help foster new friendships by giving you opportunities to sit with new people. Please take a moment to fill out my latest questionnaire listed below. I would like to know how Residents would feel about doing a split-seating arrangement for events by offering both reserved and open seating. Perhaps we offer reserved seating only for the first few days tickets are up and then open it up to open seating. We are asking for your feedback to help us better plan for events. Thank you for taking the time to fill out this quick questionnaire that gives feedback to our Events Team, or you can email us at SR-Events@PMPmanage.com. The link for the questionnaire is located under Association News > Reserved vs. Open Seating. If you receive the Sentinel via email, you can copy and paste the link below into your browser.

Holiday Hours

Please be aware of the Special Holiday Hours this month, as we want you to plan ahead for your guest visits. On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24th, the facilities will not be staffed, and Guests will not be permitted. However, Residents can access facilities via fob from 6am-11pm. On Friday, November 25th, the facility will be staffed from 9am-5pm. All Guests must be checked in during the staffed hours. The Poolside Café will be closed both Thursday, November 24th, and Friday, November 25th, and there will not be any fitness classes on those two days so that the staff can enjoy the holiday with family. However, the Fitness Staff looks forward to seeing you on Monday to help work off that extra slice of pumpkin pie!

Fall Brunch

The Events Staff wants to invite you to attend our delicious brunch on Monday, November 28th. Ryan has not done a brunch for many years, so we hope this will be fun for everyone. Enjoy French Toast, Eggs, Bacon, Orange Juice, and Coffee for $10.00. Still have family in town? Well, this would be a great way to avoid any additional cooking! Don’t forget to purchase guest tickets for your family members to attend!

Outdoor Pool Closures and Saturday Poolside Café Hours

It is that time of year when we head back inside as the days get shorter and the nights get colder. When this occurs, we stop heating the Outdoor Pool. Please note that the outdoor pools for both the Community Center and Reflections are scheduled to close on Monday, November 7th, weather pending. If the temperatures stay warm, we will delay the closure. Watch your emails for the most current information. As we head into the cooler months and the pool is being winterized, we will also return to our winter hours at the Poolside Café, which will be Monday through Friday for lunch and dinner. The great news is that we will be adding back Monday dinners. Watch the website and emails for the most current schedule for the Poolside Café, as we are also working around our busy holiday schedule with events.

December Las Vegas Shopping Trip

Our next bus trip to Las Vegas to shop will be Tuesday, December 6th. This is a great opportunity to get a jump start on your holiday shopping, have lunch with friends, and get out of town. We will depart the Community Center at 9am, shop for four hours, and then return home. Lunch will be on your own, and you can choose from the many food options in the mall. Great news! We have contracted a NEW Bus Company, the St. George Shuttle to take us to Las Vegas! We are very excited to work with this new company and we have been assured that it will have working restrooms and in good working condition. Come see the mall and the stores we don’t get the opportunity to shop at here in St. George, all decorated up for the holidays! This trip sells out quickly, so do not delay in getting your tickets today!

Swim Club

Most Residents would agree that we have a beautiful Outdoor Pool. According to Wikipedia, a swimming pool, swimming bath, wading pool, or paddling pool is a structure designed to hold water to enable swimming or other leisure activities. Believe it or not, there are many people who do not know how to swim.

But, to swim correctly and efficiently takes practice. When you swim, it is your arms that generate most of the movement, approximately 85% of forward drive, and your legs merely serve to balance your position in the water by keeping you from sinking. Swimming requires a streamlined position, and that requires a strong core, which means tight abs, glutes, and lower back.

Swimming is very good exercise for all ages, but because you cannot swim does not mean you cannot enjoy our big, beautiful pool. The rectangular shape of our outdoor pool provides adequate space for our 15 weekly Aqua Classes. Here in St. George, we can enjoy our Outdoor Pool from mid-March to mid-November. The rule at SunRiver is that no one is allowed to use the pool during Aqua Classes except for the participants. But other than those classes, Residents may enjoy the pool doing whatever pool activity they desire. Many Residents walk in the pool, use the pool weights, use the water noodles, float, lap swim, and just “hang out.”

There are designated lap swim hours which are meant for just lap swimming. If you are going to lap swim outside of those hours, please be respectful to those in the pool. Before lap swimming or lap walking, please communicate with others using the pool and work together to maximize the use of the facilities.

The SunRiver Swim Club will be holding its Annual Meeting/Potluck/Elections on Monday, November 28th, from 5-6:30pm in the Ballroom. Please RSVP through the SRSG Website. The Swim Club will furnish the plastic and paper supplies along with the dessert. Please BYOB and bring a dish to share. We will eat first, then hold a short meeting with elections for 2023 Officers. We will also be collecting dues ($5.00) for next year. Hope to see you there…

Don’t forget to enjoy lunch, ice cream, or dinner at our Poolside Cafe!

SunRiver Red Hatters

Thank goodness for Red Hats! We continually kick up our heels, doing many fun things that keep us connected, out and about, and able to wear fun clothes. What more can you ask for?

We had a successful Bunco Party in October. The laughs, cheers, oohs, and aahs could be heard throughout the Ballroom and Community Center! Great prizes were the rule of the day. This is one of the Red Hat Royalty’s absolute riots of having fun and seeing the faces of those players, experienced or newbies, up to antics trying to get that ‘21 bunco’ win. Win or lose; we hope to see you again next year!

Efficiency

Bunco is just one of our fun times, and if this sounds good to you, we welcome you to meet us on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 9am in the Ballroom. We gather for chitchat, coffee, chapter planning, and who knows what else may surprise us as we call it our ‘RED HAT SOCIAL HOUR’! We have a ‘New Table’ for those who don’t belong to a chapter. Wear purple with a red hat, a name badge, and a smile, as we have coffee, tea, and shopping available at small prices. You won’t be sorry; it’s a great opportunity to make friends and visit!

See you soon, Queen Jan Frisbey.

Our Very Own Veterans Honor Park

The idea for The Veterans Honor Park began in 2009 with one individual, Gordon Rogers. ‘Gordo’ was a proud Marine who felt that SunRiver was a community worthy of a dedicated place to honor all who have or will serve our wonderful country. He took his vision to Darcy Stewart, who gave the approval to use the park for this worthy cause. Gordon then secured the support of CJ Iacona and the American Legion as a method of accepting tax-deductible donations from the Residents. After speaking to the architect regarding possible designs and donations for the building of the park began in 2010. By late 2010, with the generosity of the SunRiver Residents, enough money had been raised to erect a simple monument with a single flagpole. With the determination of one individual, Gordon Rogers, a vision that many thought was not possible in SunRiver would become a reality. Thus began the journey for Gordon and Gene Rogers here in SunRiver.

It was at this point that Tom Cover, Carl Berger, Bill Toole, and Wade Reynolds became involved in the project. With the help of a Committee, the park took on an even more promising future. Increased fundraising allowed for even more elaborate designs. After a new design was developed, groundbreaking for the park occurred on July 4th, 2011, and the park was dedicated on November 11th, 2011.

Since that time, with the dedicated efforts of many, the park has continued to add features and purchase replacement flags. This has been completely supported by donations and the purchase of memorial bricks, with no HOA funds as was determined by the Board at the time. Memorial bricks number well over 850, with the names of those who have proudly served. Several benches have been added over the years, including two with a beautiful view of the golf course. The Eagle Statue graces the front of the memorial, and the Kneeling Soldier was added to welcome those who enter from the front.

Throughout the years, Tom and Carole Cover have been the force behind our Veterans Honor Park. They give tirelessly to the park, organizing services twice a year for both the Memorial Day and Veterans Day programs. Thanks to the unselfish time that the many groups, performers, and speakers have dedicated, these services provide an opportunity for Residents and their families to gather for these special days and pay homage to all Veterans. The Veterans Honor Park would not be the special place it is today without the efforts and generous contributions of all involved.

The Veterans Honor Park has become a place to honor those who served and a quiet and beautiful retreat within our community. Join us on Friday, November 11th, for this year’s Veterans Day program.

Library Club

We think everyone would agree that we have a beautiful library here at SunRiver. The Library Committee works continuously throughout the year to keep our shelves orderly and books rotated monthly. We would like to thank all our Residents for their wonderful donations of books, magazines, and audiobooks on CD, to our SR Library. Just a remind er that all donations should be in good condition (no broken bindings), current fiction and non-fiction, current monthly magazines only, and audiobooks on CD (no cassettes). We have two new sections titled “Health & Safety” and “Resident Authors.” We would like to remind you that our Library is not a “dumping ground.” Please do not clean off your bookshelves and expect the Committee to dispose of your unwanted books. Please find another organization to take your older and non-appropriate books.

We still mail books monthly to our Servicemen and Servicewomen. If you are interested in donating to help defray mailing costs, please contact Pat Ault at (435) 817-0644 or Lolita Hagio at (435) 652-3012.

Note: We are awaiting the delivery of a media cabinet for our SR Library. We will be storing our audiobooks on CDs in this cabinet as well as DVDs. So, we will be relocating the DVDs from the Game Room Cabinet to the Library as soon as our cabinet arrives.

Hiking Club

The best views come after the hardest climb.

For many, the past couple of years have been the hardest climb of all with lockdowns and restrictions. A steep uphill battle that struck the world, a challenge to our mental health and normality. Now that we are returning to a bit “more normal,” I believe we have the best view ever.

Check out the full hike descriptions on the calendar of the Hiking page on the SunRiver website. We hope you can join us on the trails and see the best views.

Science

Views from the James Webb Space Telescope

The Hubble Space Telescope transformed observational astronomy into a new era. Now the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) takes a quantum leap forward from the era of Hubble. We are seeing farther into space and farther back into time, than ever before. Being an infrared telescope, the JWST can see through clouds of dust to observe objects that were formally obscured. In just the first week of operation, we observed a distant field of galaxies, shells of gas ejected from a dying star, and new stars being formed in the Eta Carinae nebula.

The pictures are stunning, but Ron Smith will relate the scientific significance of each view. The adage says that a picture is worth a thousand words. Hopefully, well-chosen words and visuals will reveal how each James Webb photo alters our view of the cosmos. You will not want to miss how JWST pictures provide insights into the structure of our universe.

The Ballroom presentation takes place on Tuesday, November 8th. Doors open at 5pm. The program begins at 5:30pm. You must purchase tickets in advance. Popcorn tickets cost just $1.50. Sandwich tickets cost $5.50. We also have a free Zoom program on Thursday, November 10th. Go to the calendar on our SunRiver website and find November 10th. Click on the Zoom program for that date. This activates a ‘hot link’ that will take you to Zoom. The program begins at 5pm, so link in a few minutes early.

Resident Services Committee

Don’t Take a Fall, Take a Class

Each year, 25 percent of Americans 65 and older take a fall. Over three million each year are taken to the emergency room, with some 800,000 hospitalized with either serious head injuries or hip fractures - something we would like to avoid here in SunRiver. But there is hope, and there are preventive measures.

The SunRiver Resident Services Committee sponsors a course on balance and fall avoidance called “Stepping On,” which is led by a certified SunRiver Resident and program director, Becky Moberly.

Classes fill up fast.

Only ten people at a time can take the class due to the highly interpersonal nature of the course. The classes are two hours in length, once per week, and the course runs for seven weeks. Classes are full for the rest of 2022, but there are openings for the first session next year, which runs from January 18th through March 1st, 2023. This has been a most popular feature in the Resident Services Committee offerings throughout this past year, so we would suggest signing up soon for the next available spot

You can sign up online by going to our SunRiverStGeorge.com website > Committees > Resident Services Committee. From there, find the ‘Avoid Falls - Check out the Stepping On Program’ tab, and you will be directed from there.

SunRiver Junction Group

November is National Model Railroad Month, and to celebrate, the SunRiver Junction Group, in association with Color Country Model Railroad Club of St George, will hold its annual Model Railroad Open House Layout Tour. All around St. George, from Ivins to Coral Canyon to SunRiver and places in between, railroads will be operating. The tour starts on Friday, November 11th, and runs for four days, ending on Monday, November 14th. You can find information about days and times, as well as a map of the railroads that will be operating in SunRiver, on the SunriverStGeorge.com website. From the home page, find Clubs & Groups, then under Crafts & Hobbies, click on Model Railroad (SR Junction) and click the Annual Fall Tour tab, or find us on the November Calendar. For further information about the other railroads around St. George featured in the tour, you can go to colorcountrytrains.org.

Model railroading in SunRiver continues to grow. There are now over 15 operating model railroads right here in SunRiver. In SunRiver, see the only American Flyer train on the tour, see trains being operated from an iPad, buildings and scenery created using 3D printing, Lionel trains, 2 NEW HO model layouts, garden trains, and much more. Look for the unique layouts and enjoy all the trains and the changes we have made this past year.

Be on the lookout for more to come during the holiday season. We will hold our 9th Annual SunRiver Holiday Tour in December or January. This event is exclusive to SunRiver for our Residents and their friends. You do not want to miss this one, as this is the only time many of us run our Christmasthemed trains. The dates for our Holiday Tour are still pending, so check the website for locations and times sometime around the beginning of December or look for our announcement in the December Sentinel or the weekly emails for this holiday event.
