LIFESTYLE UPDATE Poolside Café We have exciting news! We are opening the Poolside Cafe on Saturdays this summer! This will be on a trial basis, and we will monitor the response from Residents. To start, we will be open from 12pm-4pm. Once we have enough kitchen staff hired, we will post the hours on Toast and the website so eveyone can see. We are very excited for the continuous growth of the Poolside Café; it’s become such a fantastic part of the Lifestyle! As we try out these new hours, please give us feedback at SR-Events@ PMPmanage.com. We have also expanded our hours during the week. Lunchtime will now be 11:30am-2:30pm, and dinner will run until 7pm. The days are getting longer, which means Residents will be eating later, so we are adjusting our schedule accordingly. We will also be starting to offer our lunch menu during the evening dinner hours when we run out of the dinner special. We hope this will encourage more Residents to come and eat in the evenings without having to worry about the Café running out of food. We also want to encourage everyone to try the kiosk and the Toast app; it helps the kitchen keep up with the orders. The more orders that come in via the Toast app or the kiosk, the more time Ryan and “J” can spend cooking instead of taking orders. They really like the personal interactions and taking the in-person orders, but with the increasing number of orders, it really allows them more time to focus on cooking. To help encourage Residents to use the Toast app and kiosk, we will be giving out rewards randomly to those submitting their orders that way.

Viva Las Vegas- Downtown Summerlin Mall Shopping Trip We hope you are all ready to go shopping again! Pick up some summer clothing and enjoy a day out of town. Grab a bite to eat at any of the many, fun restaurants, find that special someone a gift, or just window shop and spend time with friends. We are starting with a bus that seats 37 passengers and hope to upgrade to the 55-passenger bus if we have enough interest. Everyone will depart from the Community Center at 9am and return around 6pm. Get a full, four hours of shopping in, take a nap on the way back, and leave the driving up to the bus driver. Watch for fall bus trip information to be released this summer!
Food Truck Mondays Thank you to everyone for your support of the food trucks. The trucks are excited to come to SunRiver and have said how friendly everyone is. Here is this month’s schedule so you can plan your visits. We are looking at adding two more trucks to pair with the concerts, so watch for those to be announced as we get closer. Outdoor Concert Series We are excited to have two more bands come to play at the SRSG Golf Course Stage this month for our Outdoor Concert Series. Please help us welcome ZioNoiZ on March 14th and The Fabulous Honky Tonk Heroes on May 28th. Both shows will be 6-8pm. Come with friends and watch from your lawn chairs, blankets, or golf carts. It’s a great time of the year, and there is no better place to be than groovin’ to your favorite tunes and relaxing with your SunRiver St. George friends.
Educational Seminars We invite you to come to one of our educational seminar series this month. We have two events coming up this month. Vista Health Care and Dr. Rhett Frei will be here on May 12th at 10:30am to discuss Orthobiologics, broken bones, injured muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Get your questions about Medicare answered with Matt Whitt Law on May 27th at 10:00am in the MPR.
Memorial Day We hope everyone will attend the Memorial Day Service at the Veterans’ Honor Park starting at 9am. This is a beautiful service, and we encourage everyone to attend. The staff would like to thank everyone who has served in the armed forces so that we can live to enjoy all the freedoms of our country. A few reminders, the facility will be staffed from 9am-5pm, please remember that all guests must be checked in with a Staff member prior to using the facilities. In observance of Memorial Day, we will not be holding any fitness classes and the poolside window will be closed. We will have food trucks, so you can still have take-out dinner while sitting by the pool. We hope you and your family have a safe Memorial Day weekend.
Special Holiday Children’s Swim On Saturday, May 28th, we will be holding our second Holiday Children’s Swim extended hours in the Outdoor Pool for this year. Just a couple of reminders: please remember that all children must be potty trained to use the facilities (please no swim diapers). Guests need to be checked in with staff, have a guest card punched (one punch per guest per day), and have a current guest waiver on file. Guest waivers are good until year end, meaning all waivers are good until December 31, 2022. Please remember that Residents must remain with their guests, and all children must be supervised by someone 18 years old or older. 3
Meditation WHY MEDITATE IN A GROUP? The SunRiver Meditation Group has been meeting for over 20 years and is always welcoming new members. Practicing meditation in a group has many benefits. It can help develop a meditation routine. It is easy to find excuses not to meditate at home, and it is often hard to plan a time to meditate. If you have a regular time and place, and a group or a friend expecting you to show up, you are more likely to make time for meditation. Meditating in a group is a fun way to socialize and learn a skill that is good for the mind, body, and spirit. Gathering in a group is physically good for us—loneliness is bad for our health. We find friendship, encouragement, and support in a gathering. When we meditate in a group, we learn from each other. Our group is member-led. Members have led a variety of meditation practices. We have experienced Metta, or loving-kindness meditation, chanting, walking the labyrinth, mindful eating, honoring the “pause,” mindful listening to music, progressive relaxation, guided visualization, various forms of energy connection, and more. There is power in numbers—a ripple effect of peace—an increase of energy and healing power when a group meditates together. We can share ideas and meditative experiences. If this sounds like something you would enjoy, please join us every Wednesday at 10am in the Multi-Purpose Room.
We would love to have you join us Silver Liners The Silver Liners performed for The Retreat at SunRiver on March 3rd, 2022. The performance revolved around the music from our youth. Songs like “Johnny B. Goode” and “Rock Around the Clock” had the Residents singing and clapping along. The performers are all Residents of SunRiver (back to front; left to right) Sherry Adcock, Dolores Long, Basia Burtan, Joe Adair, Lucy Noorda, Mary Hocking, Pam Ratz, Ramona Nielson, Alice Jegou-Black, and Linda Adair. We performed with great smiles and shared our love of line dancing with all the Residents. SWIM CLUB Our brunch to celebrate the reopening of the Outdoor Pool was well attended, but the weather did not cooperate ...too chilly. No worries... the Swim Club will be hosting another brunch on Sunday, June 5th. Look for details on the Swim Club web page. SunRiver’s aqua classes are well attended, with over 600 participants monthly. This number will also dramatically increase as the weather heats up. Along with attending aqua classes, you should try adding “Water Walking” to your exercise schedule. To start off, try walking in water that is about waist level. Focus on the proper form by keeping your core and back muscles engaged, back straight and lengthened, shoulders back, and chin up with your head looking straight ahead and your ears above your shoulders. As you walk in the water, try to make sure you keep your torso upright without leaning too far forward or to either side, and walk with a long stride. Press into your heel first before rolling your weight onto your toes and swing your arms as you walk. Once you are used to walking in water with the correct form, you can move into deeper water, which we now have in our outdoor pool. Start by walking slowly and gradually increase your speed. Next month, we will talk about different variations to increase the intensity of water walking.
For now, enjoy the pool and the warm weather... get a bite to eat at our Poolside Café... some of our best memories are made in flip flops!!!!!

QUILTING CLUB You will often hear quilters using various acronyms to discuss their quilter’s world. If there is a quilter in your life, you might find it handy to increase your vocabulary with these quilter acronyms. Basic knowledge of STASH (a quilters’ personal accumulation of fabric stashed away in closets, drawers, cubby holes, under beds and in the garage) is required. BOM = Block of the Month (a monthly quilt block project; in a year you have enough blocks for a whole quilt) DSM = Domestic Sewing Machine (must have at least one) FART = Fabric Acquisition Road Trip (an excursion to any or all quilt shops within driving distance) FMQ = Free Motion Quilting (not for the faint of heart, this requires a lot of practice to artfully sew the quilt top, batting, and backing together on your domestic machine) FQ = Fat Quarter (a cut of fabric 18” x 22”) LAQ= Long Arm Quilter (a quilter with a really big sewing machine that sews a pattern onto the quilt top, batting and backing) LQS = Local Quilt Shop (a favorite place to hang out) PhD = Projects Half Done (we all have PhD’s) SABLE = Stash Accumulation Beyond Life Expectancy (a quilter’s common dilemma) SEX = Stash Enhancing Excursion (this is an excuse to go buy more fabric in case you ever need it or just because you love it) UFO = Unfinished Object (projects in various stages of progress that have been set aside for now, possibly forever) WIP = Work In Progress (will possibly get done this year) WISP = Work In Slow Progress (started it and will probably get back to it when things settle down) WOMBAT = Waste of Money, Batting, and Time (very unfortunate, but it happens)

SUNRIVER RED HATTERS What a resoundingly successful event was the Red Hat Birthday Luncheon in April! Laughs, “ah’s”, “no way” utterances, and gasps were imminent as each suspect was questioned by the clever inspector and her sidekick. They got to business narrowing the suspects down and finding out who killed Poppy Cock. There was a preposterous pontification of pundits presented for the elaborate edification of everyone enthralled by the event. A clever caper, written by Happy Hatters’ Kathy London and Jan Hodges, proved to be a perfect “who-dun-it” mystery with cunning

WESTERN DANCERS The Western Dancers recently performed at the St. George Art Festival. They performed their routines to “Footloose”, “Country Girl Shake It for Me”, and “Timber”. SCIENCE Home prices have gone up like a rocket here in St. George over the past four years. If you combine home price increases with decreasing inventory of homes for sale, Washington County is the hottest real estate market in the country. We’re seeing similar home price accelerations in Boise, Idaho; Phoenix, Arizona; Austin, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; Tampa, Florida; and parts of North and South Carolina. Our neighbor to the north, Canada, has seen astounding housing price accelerations in Vancouver, Toronto, Halifax, and Ottawa. While these home price increases are not sustainable, it’s hard to predict when they might level off, or if they might crash, as we saw in 2009. There are sound economic arguments to suggest that home prices will continue to climb. There are strong economic arguments to suggest we are headed for a major home price correction. We’ve had home price accelerations before. Home prices rapidly increased after WWII but never crashed. Home prices peaked in 2008, and in 2009 they did crash. It’s natural to compare our existing housing market to the Post WWII boom or the housing boom between 2004 and 2008. However, our current situation is unique. On Tuesday, May 10th, Ron Smith will present the economic arguments for a continued housing price rise, as well as the economic arguments that suggest we are poised for a housing price decline. To paraphrase Shakespeare, “Double, double toil and trouble; incomes muddle while housing prices bubble.” You won’t want to miss this program that offers insight into housing prices, as well as the future of your community. You must purchase tickets in advance to attend the May 10th, Ballroom program. Popcorn tickets cost $1.50 and wrap tickets cost $5.50. Doors open at 5:00pm. The program starts at 5:30pm. You may attend the Zoom program for free in the comfort of your own home. The Zoom program begins promptly at 5:00pm on Thursday, May 12th. PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE NOBODY TOLD ME THAT! - HOW DID YOU FIND OUT? Did you hear about the gas line leak across the freeway in March? When a member of the Preparedness Committee asked the fire department about preparing for emergencies, their primary emphasis was on communication. They strongly encourage everyone in SunRiver to sign up for reverse 911. It is a way the city can quickly contact and inform everyone in a specific area about an emergency. Signing up is easy and free. There is no charge for ongoing services. Sign up can be done by going to the SunRiverStGeorge.com website, select the heading “Association”, scroll down and click on “Committees”, and near the bottom click “Preparedness Committee”. The second item in the drop down is “Reverse 911”. Clicking it gives a link to register for Heartfelt love and condolences reverse 911. You can register your cell phone, your home to the family and friends of phone, or both. If you need assistance signing up, please Dennis Yack contact the Preparedness Committee. Another of the fire department’s suggestions is that everyone in SunRiver understands and prepares for sheltering-in-place. The idea behind sheltering-in-place is, rather than leaving your home during an emergency, you hunker down in the comfort of our own home after having already made preparations such as stockpiling food, water, and resources to care for and protect ourselves. In the near future, it is the plan of the Preparedness Committee to do a presentation on how to prepare for an emergency and shelter-in-place. Watch for an announcement.

RESIDENT SERVICES COMMITTEE When Your Vision Starts to Go Few things get our attention quicker than eyesight that seems to be fading. The sudden realization that images are no longer clear, and your “cheaters” aren’t really doing their job anymore, can be devastating. Not being as agile as you were once before is one thing. Losing your sight, well, that is another thing altogether. Imagining a life without sight can be scary. Very scary. 12
So, what is one to do about failing sight? What is the diagnosis? What are the options? The treatments? An upcoming Resident Services Committee seminar might just have an answer for your low vision queries this coming May 19, 2022, in the Community Center Ballroom at 2:00pm. RESIDENT SERVICES COMMITTEE Helping SunRiver to Be Its Best Self For years, the SunRiver Resident Services Committee (RSC) has worked to bring you the information and services needed for a happier, healthier life in this wonderful community. Mostly, this has come through topical seminars presented by experts, workshops, and panel discussions. Additionally, during the Covid pandemic, the RSC helped facilitate bringing a vaccination clinic to the SunRiver Ballroom for those who could not get to a state-sponsored site. We know there are still some unmet needs in our community, so think of our committee as a solution in search of a need. With that in mind, we extend an invitation to retired healthcare or other medical professionals who may be interested in leading a Walk With A Doc session. We would also like to extend an invitation to other professionals whose expertise may match other particular needs we have in our community.
