POTTERY
Happy Easter from the Kindred Spirits at SunRiver Pottery Studio! One of our members has spent countless hours creating a beautiful display for Easter, over 100 hours in fact. To make these Easter eggs, clay was rolled out, pushed, and formed into two halves of an egg form. When they became hard as leather, these two halves were pressed together to form the base egg. While still somewhat soft, the surface of the egg was pressed with texture. From here, the decorative flowers and butterflies were created. The eggs were then given their first fire in a low fire, or bisque, kiln. Next the task of painting/glazing each little detail on the flowers, which was done with underglaze. The eggs then went into their second firing in the low fire kiln. After the second firing, the flowers and butterflies received a clear, shiny glaze. The egg itself was left with a matte finish. The final firing was completed in the high, glaze fire. A lot of work, but well worth it, for the final result of this beautiful Easter decoration.
Tennis Club
The SunRiver Tennis Club will have a Spring Fling Social on Saturday, April 23rd at 9am. After tennis play, we will have a light lunch. If you are interested, but not yet a member, contact one of the Tennis Club officers. You may find information on our website www.SunRiverStGeorge.com under Tennis Club Events. It’s “Love All” over at the Tennis Club. Not literally of course, but over at the Tennis Club we embrace a ‘loving’ combination of fun & competition. Emphasis on the fun. We welcome any and all to come enjoy tennis, our occasional socials, and the occasional clinics. In lieu of any imminent clinic, and as we focus exclusively in playing doubles, may I suggest these words of tennis strategy wisdom when it comes to playing doubles. The following can be applied at all levels:
The 3 most important shots in Doubles Tennis: 1. “Down the Middle”- Anytime you aim between your two opponents, you have a significantly improved chance of winning the point. Not only is the middle the lowest part of the net, which increases your chance of getting the ball over, playing down the middle often creates confusion within your opponents as to who should hit it. Many times, the ball passes by like a field goal. While other times, there is a clanging of Wilsons as the ball drops to the ground.

2. “Deep”- There is an old adage: “A ball that lands short is going to hit the net and drop down or get crushed by a Larry Proffit Smash.” A ball that lands deep may end up out, but if the ball ends up in, it is exceedingly hard to return across the net without it rising to a level for an easy put-away. Try to keep the ball as deep as you can. Depth leads to a much better chance at a point won. 3. “1st serve in”- You don’t have to have a serve like Roscoe Tanner or John McEnroe. From a mental standpoint, when you get your first serve in it takes the pressure off, which allows you to focus better, and all pressure shifts to your opponents. They now must hit a good return, or Pat Proffit will summarily put it away for a point. Missing your first serve adds a level of mental pressure to get your second serve in or face double fault. It also gives increased confidence to your opponent as they look to hit a perceived weaker serve. Don’t worry about power, just focus on getting your first serve in and the odds of winning the point go up dramatically. We hope you found this helpful but, more importantly, we hope to find you out on our SunRiver Tennis Courts.
KEEP SWINGING!!!

Meditation Chakra meditation is a form of energy meditation. According to Eastern Indian tradition, the chakras are seven centers of energy. Six are located along the spine starting at the base. The seventh is located at the crown of the head. Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means wheel or cycle. When these centers are spinning- sometimes called open or balanced- your organs, mind, and intellect work at their best. Each chakra has a color associated with it. Each color has a vibration. The chakra located at the base of the spine is the root chakra and is associated with the color red. It is also associated with the element earth and affects how grounded you feel. The sacral chakra is located below the navel and is associated with the color orange and the element water. It is responsible for creativity, sexuality, and adaptability. The third chakra is the solar plexus. Its color is yellow, and its element is fire. It is the center of self-esteem. The heart chakra’s color is green (sometimes pink), and its element is air. The heart chakra is a link between the upper three chakras and the lower three. It is associated with compassion, trust, and love. The throat chakra’s color is blue, and its element is ether. This is the chakra of communication. The third eye chakra is a point between the eyebrows; its color is indigo, but it has no element association. It is believed to control your intuition, wisdom, and spiritual power. The crown chakra is at the tip of the head. Its color is white. It is the most spiritual of the chakras and connects a person to their inner wisdom and the cosmos. This chakra has the highest vibration. In a chakra meditation we may focus on only one chakra, or focus for a few minutes on each, starting with the root chakra and working your way up to the crown. You may focus on any of the aspects of the chakra- color, element, or characteristic- and picture the chakra spinning. The intention is to stimulate each energy center.
You are welcome to join us any Wednesday at 10am COMPUTER / PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB What is a phishing attack? (Pronounced Fishing) Phishing is where someone tries to have you click on or login using a link leading to an imitation website. This site may emulate your bank, a utility service, Microsoft, or even parcel delivery. The bogus message may be very convincing in terms of looking like the company web page, it may even “lock your computer screen”, or have loud sounds going off. They may use logos or text from the genuine website. It will ask you for login information, payment details, or other personal information. They may also direct you to call them. Depending on what the phishers intend to do with the stolen information, you may find they change your logins as well. Regular phishing attacks are blasted out to random recipients by the hundreds, thousands, or hundreds of thousands. The attackers are hoping that if just a few people respond, they’ll be able to make the scam pay. It’s a low risk, potentially high reward, enterprise.
What is spear phishing? Spear phishing is when the phisher specifically targets you, possibly using information bought on the dark web or from a data breach. They will address you and may have personal information about you. If you are not sure, don’t respond to the text or email. Contact the company or person directly, using a phone number or email you know to be safe. Never call someone you do not know before you call someone you do know. 4

PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE Have you heard about the GREAT UTAH SHAKEOUT drill to be held Thursday, April 21st, 2022 at 10am? Millions of people worldwide practice how to DROP, COVER and HOLD ON each year. On the 21st, the entire state of Utah will be participating in a mock earthquake drill, and we are asking everyone to participate by placing their “OK” Green Hang Tag on the front door where it is visible from the street. Many communities like ours nationwide have a CERT program (Community Emergency Response Team) that provides basic training for emergency situations and SunRiver Community Association has such a Team! Members of our CERT team will be going past each home on Thursday April 21st at 10am to count the number of homes that have put out their “OK” green hang tag. If you are not sure where yours is, check your SunRiver phone book. If you do not have a hang tag, please pick one up from the Community Center Administration desk before April 21st. If you have any questions, ask your neighbor who is a CERT member. There is also information on the community website, SunRiverStGeorge.com, look under the CERT tab in Clubs and Groups. We thank you for your help to get our community prepared in the case of an emergency. PLEASE PARTICIPATE. On another note, if you haven’t’ signed up for emergency alerts from Washington county, please consider doing so. The program is free and can convey vital information in an emergency. It is possible to sign up for either text or voice notifications. The web sign up for it is: 911register.com

SWIM CLUB Our next Swim Club hosted event will be a Continental Breakfast at the Outdoor Pool Patio on Sunday, June 5th, at 10am. Look for further details in the Weekly Events Emails. Swimming offers a cardiovascular and respiratory workout that helps to maintain and improve balance and coordination, strengthen the immune system, grow muscle mass, and enhance joint flexibility and bone density. Water aerobics has become an extremely popular form of exercise among seniors. Swimming laps exercises a wider range of muscle groups and burns more calories than walking, while providing many of the same benefits for the circulatory and respiratory systems. Come join our aqua classes with our great aqua instructors. Spring is here; come enjoy our beautiful Outdoor Pool. Don’t forget that lunch is also available MondayFriday at our Poolside Cafe! If you aren’t barefoot, then you are overdressed.

SCIENCE The JWST
What is JWST? It’s the James Webb Space Telescope. Launched on Christmas Day, 2021, the JWST has achieved proper orbit and is fully deployed. NASA has never launched such a complex payload. Unlike the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope lies in an orbit five times farther away than the moon. Hubble lies in a low earth orbit, only about 400 miles above the earth’s surface. Unlike the Hubble Telescope, the JWST gathers and focuses infrared light, not visible light. We perceive infrared as heat. To “see” in infrared, the JWST must be shielded from sunlight. That required the unfolding of a huge, reflective, mylar sun shield. The sun shield has a greater surface area than a tennis court. Unlike the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope is much larger. Hubble collects light with one, 94-inch diameter, mirror. The JWST collects light with an array of 18 mirrors, each one about the same size as Hubble. The JWST will usher in a new era of astronomical research. Because it gathers so much more light than any other space telescope or earth-based telescope, it will see farther into space. By seeing farther into space, it will look back farther into time. That early horizon of time will allow us to view the universe shortly after the Big Bang. We may unveil the origin of galaxies, as well as the nature of the mysterious “dark matter”. Equally enticing, the JWST should be able to image some of the exoplanets that orbit nearby stars. These images may determine if these planets have an atmosphere and have water on their surface. We’ll learn if there are worlds capable of sustaining life on nearby star systems. Join Ron Smith on Tuesday, April 12th, for an exciting program about the JWST. You must purchase tickets in advance. Wrap tickets are $5 and Popcorn tickets are just $1. We still conduct Zoom programs. Our Zoom program begins at 5pm, Thursday, April 14th. To join us on Zoom, go to the calendar section of our SunRiver website and click on “Science Presentation” for the 14th. It will connect you to the Zoom program. See you in deep space on April 12th or 14th.

THEATRE GROUP
After many dark months, we are delighted to be preparing for live performances to full houses. Claire Dale Welti, our music director, is flushing out the script she has written, “The House I Live In”, for our July 4th production. Tiffany Glass is updating some of the scenes in the parody “Gramma Mia” that she had written for presentation prior to the pandemic shutting down large theatre productions. In order to put these two marvelous scripts on the stage, we need interested actors and actresses! Open auditions will be held Monday, April 11th, at 10am in the Ballroom. There are a variety of roles in both these plays; so, come out and give it a try. We need new faces with different styles, as well as our more seasoned performers. Being a part of a theatrical production is invigorating and satisfying. It is a lot of work, but a lot of fun! Come join the cast, on stage or behind the scenes; every person is valuable to a successful show!
DANCIN’ TO THE OLDIES Several years ago, SunRiver was one of nine venues open to the public for the ballroom dance style of dancing. As time went on, all the dance locations closed except for two. Though there are many opportunities for moving, grooving, and dancing to both live and DJ music, Dancin’ to the Oldies is the only venue in SunRiver that is focused primarily on dancing styles for couples, and as new Residents have joined the SR community, other dance styles are also included. We are privileged to have Kevin Auernig, “the One-Man Band”, playing for us every month. He always plays a nice variety of music that suits many different dance styles, although his primary focus is on music which accommodates partner dance styles such as the Cha-Cha, Rumba, Waltz, Swing, etc. Partners execute synchronized steps with a leader and a follower; the patterns could be in place or in a moving formation. There is an ebb and flow as different partners move around one another. At the last few dances, the Events teams has distributed a diagram, which was agreed to by community members from all dance styles, showing how we can all share the dance floor. Please review this diagram when you come, and remember to make room for all the dancers at Dancin’ to the Oldies on the 4th Tuesday of every month.
DOGPATCH CLUB What is a Therapy Animal? Have you ever wondered what a certified therapy animal is and does? Have you ever asked yourself if you and your pet could be a therapy team and help others? If you have ever considered these questions, now is your chance to find out. The Dog Patch Club is hosting a seminar presentation by the Intermountain Therapy Animals (ITA) organization to answer all your questions about therapy animals. A dog, cat, rabbit, and even a baby wallaby, with its’ owner, could become an animal therapy team. The ITA will be presenting an informative program to explain the ins and outs of therapy teams, and be available to answer your questions. As an added bonus, the ITA will be bringing some of their therapy dogs with them. This is an event for all SunRiver Residents. The presentation will be approximately one hour and will help you understand the work that the ITA does and how it can benefit you and those in our community. Please join us Thursday, April 14th, at 1pm in the Community Center Ballroom for this presentation. Please reserve your space on the SunRiverStGeorge.com website. Hope to see you there. 9

RESIDENT SERVICE COMMITTEE
Renowned Doctor Louise Jorgensen to Walk with Residents in April
Dr. Louise Jorgensen, PhD, a renowned psychotherapist and mental health counselor, will be leading the April 19th, 2022, “Walk with a Doc” (WWAD) at SunRiver St. George. WWAD will begin at 8:45am for registration, at 9am we will have a brief 5-10 minute presentation, and then the actual walk will begin. All walkers should check in at the Outdoor Pool Patio at the SunRiver Community Center for further direction. Dr. Jorgensen will join the walk (half a mile up to two miles in length) as she listens to Residents and answers questions along the way. Dr. Jorgensen specializes in positive psychology and psychopharmacology, has trained at Oregon State University and Harvard, and has worked with patients across the globe (including Africa and Southeast Asia). Her training and experience include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotional Focused Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). She maintains activity in counseling and psychology and has recently moved to SunRiver with her husband of 47 years. Dr. Jorgensen has four daughters, one foster daughter, and 18 grandchildren. WWAD is sponsored by the SunRiver Resident Services Committee, with chapter funding from the Southern Utah Senior Foundation, headquartered in Washington County. WWAD is also open to any St. George resident regardless of whether they live in or outside of the SunRiver community.
Heart Health and the Structural Heart Program at St George Regional Hospital Major Heart Procedures are being done locally. Until recently, if a resident of Southern Utah was dealing with certain heart valve issues, they would have to travel out of town to get it fixed. Even then, they might face a complex surgery that requires opening the heart. The Structural Heart Program at St George Regional Hospital bridges the gap between traditional cardiology and open-heart surgery with new minimally invasive technology. Intermountain Foundation and the Residents Services Committee has partnered together to bring Dr Blake Gardner, Director of the Structural Heart Program to speak here at SunRiver. He will educate us about these new procedures and address the importance of Heart Health. Dr. Gardner completed a cardiology fellowship in Rochester, NY and later completed an advanced fellowship in interventional cardiology. He is board certified in Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Cardiology. Areas of expertise include structural heart disease, peripheral vascular disease and coronary artery disease. This seminar will be held on April 21st, at 2pm in the Ballroom. Watch your Events Weekly Email or visit the RSC page on the SunRiver website for further information. 12
DUP Monument to be Dedicated in New SunRiver Park The Daughters of Utah Pioneers monument and plaque will be dedicated Saturday, April 30th, at 11am in the Atkinville Wash Park (1211 Copeland Drive), next to the SunRiver Villas. All are welcome to attend and learn more about the fascinating history of the SunRiver area. Special guest will be Ralph Atkin, great grandson of William and Rachel Atkin, the pioneers who founded Atkinville in 1877. They built three limestone homes near the Virgin River. There will be limited parking and seating at the park. However, there will be additional room at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints parking lot on Angel Arch Drive. You can choose to walk to the park, drive your golf cart, or watch the dedication indoors on Zoom at the Angel Arch Chapel. Bring a camp chair to view the dedication at the park. DUP is a worldwide, non-profit organization dedicated to preserving our pioneer history through collecting histories, photos, and artifacts, and by dedicating monuments in communities throughout the world where historical events took place. The DUP Atkinville camp’s monument will be Historical Marker #591 and is funded by donations from DUP members. The land for the monument and materials have been provided by the City of St. George in their new Atkinville Wash Park dedicated a year ago in SunRiver. For more information on DUP go to isdup.org or checkout Clubs and Groups on the website SunRiverStGeorge.com or contact Lorraine Rice- Captain of DUP Atkinville Camp loriannrice@gmail.com.

FITNESS
A balanced life. It’s something many strive for but how many of us actually achieve it in our lives? From the holistic standpoint, the components of balance are body, mind, and spirit. These components translate into mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. If we are lacking in any of those areas or we put too much emphasis in one particular area our lives will be out of balance. Do you take time in your day to balance out the needs of your body, mind, and spirit? Are you driven to do the same activities every day without variation? Do you stimulate your mind and go out of your comfort zone to do something challenging? Do you take time out for others and engage in volunteering or acts of kindness to feed your spirit? These are some of the amazing benefits and reasons for developing and maintaining a balanced life, according to helpguide.org: •
Reduction in stress
•
Improvement in general health and well being
•
Improvement in your mental state of mind – eating well and keeping a good life balance can help fight against depression.
•
Helping to boost your energy – eating smart helps provide your body with the nutrients it needs and can lead to improved levels of energy.
•
Improvement in your mood – exercise is something that can definitely help improve your mood through your body’s own release of endorphins through exercise. But interacting with people and developing social connections can help keep your mind active and improve your mood.
If you’re struggling to lead a balanced life, or you’re looking to add some things in that can help you reach a better balance, here are some ways you can do that: •
Try to be as healthy as possible. Get plenty of rest, exercise regularly but not excessively, and eat healthy food. Nourish your body with things that are good for you, try to limit the wasted calories.
•
Set goals – Achieving goals can help assist with gaining a positive mindset. Your goals can cover virtually anything from finishing a book, to achieving a fitness or weight goal, volunteering for your favorite charity, and many others.
•
Be organized – Try to have a plan, allowing you time to accomplish your daily tasks while leaving room for the activities you enjoy. Being organized can help reduce stress and improve your life balance.
•
Make time for friends and family. These are the people that are part of your support system that make us feel valued, loved. and cared for. They contribute to our emotional wellbeing and help keep us in balance when life sometimes makes us feel otherwise.
•
Make time for the spiritual side of you – take some time out of your day to pray, meditate, or just give gratitude for the people and things in your life. An attitude of gratitude can lift your mood and make you more enthusiastic to interact with others and maybe help improve their outlook on things.
In summary, a balanced life can certainly lead to a happier life when considering all its benefits. If you’re struggling to lead a balanced life, I hope these suggestions help you on your everyday journey to reach more balance in your life and live with greater happiness and joy! 14

SUNRIVER JUNCTION MODEL RAILROADS “G scale’” is the largest format in general use by model railroaders. These train layouts are usually found outdoors in garden settings or just in the yard. The landscapes are natural, but many have buildings, streams, tunnels, bridges, and other features included in the design. G scale was introduced in 1968 by Ernst Paul Lehmann, a German firm that produced model railroad items under the brand name LGB (Lehmann Groß Bahn“Lehmann Big Train” in German). LGB products were intended for indoor and outdoor use. Most tracks are made of brass, which can remain outside in all weather. As with all other lettered scales, there is a numeric designation as well. This has an interesting twist; although all G scale trains run on the same size track, you will see different numerical sizes. Initially a scale of 1/22.5 was employed, but now you can find 1/29 and, also some 1/32 scale trains. What is “scale” in the example 1/29? This means that 1 inch in a model train equals 29 inches in a real train. Enough about numbers, let’s get to the fun part…the trains!

Since these trains are outdoors, you can see many configurations that HomeAid.finditsimple.com make up hundreds of feet of track. Right here in SunRiver we have five G scale railroads, and they are all very different. Some are in small yards, some in very large yards. Multiple trains running at the same time, steam locomotives pulling freight or passenger cars, diesel freight trains, and even some replicas of 200 mph, high-speed, passenger trains. There are over 30 manufacturers of engines, cars, and accessories for this scale. Some of the more common are the original LGB, Lionel (yes, they make G Scale), Bachman, and USA Trains. Now that we have covered the most common model railroad scales in articles over the past twelve months, how about getting out in the community and see what they really look like. The SunRiver Junction Model Railroad Group will have their Annual Spring Tour in April. So, SAVE THE DATE, we will be operating trains on Saturday, April 16th, in the afternoon. Details of the locations and times will be noted in the Community Association Weekly Admin Email starting the first week in April, so be on the lookout. A list of participating railroads will be posted on the Railroad web page as well, so be on the lookout for that about mid-March. 15
