POTTERY UNDERGLAZE TRANSFERS Transfer printing of underglaze was developed in England from the 1750’s on and was pioneered by the Staffordshire Potteries. The patterns were produced in the same way as printed engravings, which were also in industrial production at the time. A copper printing plate, engraved with the design, would transfer underglaze pigment to a piece of dampened tissue paper through a rolled press which could then be adhered to earthenware. Today, underglaze transfers are made up of ceramic underglaze material that has been printed onto thin paper. They can be transferred to the surface of greenware clay, meaning the clay has not been fired. The surface of leather hard greenware is misted with water, and then the transfer is applied. After a few moments, a soft rib is used to burnish the back of the transfer paper onto the clay. The paper is then carefully pulled back while checking that the image has been transferred.

FRIENDSHIP-SUPPORT-ACTIVITIES
WIDOWS CARING CONNECTIONS SUNRIVER WIDOWS GROUP
THIRD THURSDAY OF EVERY MONTH
COME CONNECT, SHARE, CHAT AND MEET NEW FRIENDS. MONTHLY ACTIVITIES PLANNED. TO PARTICIPATE GO TO SUNRIVER WEBSITE UNDER GROUPS TO FIND MORE INFORMATION.
A new Group in SunRiver has been created to offer a circle of support to Widows. This group will offer SunRiver Residents an opportunity to make new friendships, offer shared experiences, and connect with other Widows who are moving forward into the next chapter of their lives. The lives of widows have been totally changed. We are all members of a group to which none of us wanted to belong. Even though we know that our Husbands would want only the best for us, navigating a new path forward takes courage and the support of women who are walking the same path. Our mission is to encourage a full life after loss. We are planning monthly luncheons right here in SunRiver. This will not only give us the opportunity to connect, share, and chat, but to plan upcoming events. We would like to have at least one monthly activity that can be shared by all who want to participate. If you have lost your Husband and would like to make new friends and have activities to look forward to that do not require you to be part of a couple, we hope you will join us on the 3rd Thursday of every month. You are not alone in your grief, and we offer you a circle of support. Be sure to sign up for our group emails through the website and check the calendar for upcoming events. If you would like more information, please contact Karen Bettilyon at kbettilyon@gmail.com.

Pluto & the Dwarf Planets
SUNRIVER SINGERS Get your Hawaiian shirts and muumuus out! The Hawaiian Dinner and Show sponsored by the SunRiver Singers is back! Mark your calendars for April 6th! The Hula Honeys, the Ukulele Club, and SunRiver Singers are preparing for the Hawaiian Dinner and Show which will be held on April 6th this year. The show has always been a favorite for SunRiver audiences and is sold out every time. The last show was in -2019 so the performers are really gearing up for a good performance. Watch for the cost of the dinner and other information when you sign up in the Event Tickets section. Please call Kitsie Hacken at 435-531-6627 for more information.
Many people across our entire world, as well as some professional astronomers, regret that Pluto has been officially reclassified as a dwarf planet. Before passing judgment on this demotion of Pluto, learn about Pluto’s discovery and the discovery of several other Pluto-sized worlds in the outer solar system; you may then see why this was done. While Pluto remains small in stature, it’s complex topography remains a challenge to explain. This little world has a thin atmosphere, rugged mountains made of ice, a frozen ocean of liquid nitrogen, and maybe even a volcano that erupts liquid nitrogen. Just as each planet has distinctive characteristics, each dwarf planet does too. Four of the known dwarf planets lie at similarly remote distances from the sun as Pluto. The fifth is the asteroid, Ceres, which lies between Mars and Jupiter. It displays evidence of an undersurface ocean of liquid water. Some astronomers also classify the asteroids of Pallas, Juno, and Vesta as dwarf planets. Each of these entities have distinctive characteristics. In every way, the dwarf planets are as varied and fascinating as the major planets of our solar system. To attend the Ballroom lecture, you must purchase tickets in advance. Chicken Wraps cost five dollars. You can get a Popcorn ticket for just one dollar. Our Ballroom presentation is on Tuesday, March 8. Doors open at 5:00pm. The program begins at 5:30pm. Our Zoom program on Thursday, March 10, is free. It begins at 5:00pm. My good friend, Howard Simkover, will give the Zoom presentation. On the day of the 10th, go to the Calendar section of our website. Click on the link for “science presentation” for the 10th at 5:00pm. May we all rendezvous on Pluto this March.

LIBRARY GROUP Last month, we added a library section categorized as “Resident Authors” exclusively for books written by Residents. This month, we have added one entitled “Health & Safety” to support and augment presentations and information on topics offered by the Resident Services Committee. We would appreciate donations of books to this new section in our SunRiver Library. Anything related to healthy nutrition and cooking, physical and mental health, medicine, treatments, overall well-being and safety in the home (i.e. appliances and home security) will be gladly accepted, providing books are in good condition and not more than ten years old. This new section will be located on the North wall of the Library (opposite the entrance), adjacent to the “Resident Authors” section,

To donate, simply place your donated books in the Book Return upper or lower drawers on the south (entrance) end of the library counter. Thank you for supporting our beautiful SunRiver Library!

RESIDENT SERVICE COMMITTEE Sleep Solutions We all know we feel better after a good night’s sleep. But what constitutes “a good night’s sleep”? And, what if it has been a while since you had a really good, good night’s sleep? Are you facing the dreaded “bedroom divorce” where spouses find themselves in separate bedrooms in search of that all-important good night’s rest? What are the most common types of sleep disorders and what are the most common treatment options? Dr. Alex McKinlay is a board-certified ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeon and sleep specialist at Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He will present his findings and analyses on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at 2:00pm in the Ballroom via Zoom; direct to SunRiver Residents. Residents can come to the Ballroom to watch on “the big screen” or tune in via Zoom to this special event sponsored by SunRiver’s Resident Services Committee (RSC). In this exclusive presentation, Dr. McKinlay will address common sleep disorders like sleep apnea and insomnia, and what treatments are available for those and other disorders. There will also be a 30-minute question and answer period at the conclusion of his presentation. Dr. McKinlay has just completed a yearlong fellowship on sleep disorders and knows the value -especially for soldiers in the field- of a traditional good night’s rest. Dr. McKinlay was one of two medical doctors who spoke at the very successful RSC Covid-19 seminar last January. He has agreed to visit us again, this time focusing on what may be called a “sleep crisis” across the United States-which is especially prevalent among seniors. Dr. Alex McKinlay is a Colonel in the US Army and is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He is a career medical officer with plans to finish his career in 2024 and move into a private ENT/sleep practice in San Antonio.
DANCIN’ TO THE OLDIES
The new ticketing and seating system seemed to be successful on our first attempt in January. We continued in February with the addition of another two tables for “assigned” seating. We are interested in your feedback; let us know what you think, in person or by email, to dancin.2.the. oldies@sunrivertoday.com. Our goal is to make our dance the “best” for every person: those who No more ‘Cupping’ like coming and sitting with their friends and your ears to hear those who like to come and meet new friends. in noise
The suggested “dancing protocol” placed on the tables is for your reference. By following this layout, everyone can dance to the music in their preferred style without overlapping into each other’s space. A little cooperation and respect for one another goes a long way to making our limited dance floor big enough for everyone to have a good time. We are so happy that Kevin Auernig has signed up with us for another year. We love the live music “The One-Man Band” provides and the variety of music styles Kevin chooses. He welcomes suggestions and requests, as well as your general good wishes. Get your tickets via the ticket system or come to the front desk if you need assistance. Guests are welcome, but they must attend with a resident, and only residents may purchase tickets. See our Club Page for further information on how to use the ticket system and about Guest attendance.
See you again March 22nd, the 4th Tuesday of the month! 10

HIKING Part One - The Ten Essentials of Hiking - Ten Things You Should Bring on Every Hike The American Hiking Society recommends everyone pack the “Ten Essentials” every time you head out for a hike. Whether you plan to be gone for a couple of hours or several months, make sure to pack the following items and become familiar with these items so you know how to use them: 1. Appropriate footwear - Happy feet make for pleasant hiking. Think about traction, support, and protection when selecting well-fitting shoes or boots. 2. Map and Compass/GPS - While phones and GPS units are handy, they aren’t always reliable in the backcountry. Consider carrying a paper map and compass. 3. Water (and a way to purify it) - As a guideline, plan for half a liter of water per hour in moderate temperatures/terrain. Carry enough water for your trip and know where and how to treat water. 4. Food - Pack calorie dense foods to help fuel your hike and carry an extra portion in case you are out longer than expected. 5. Rain Gear & Dry-Fast Layers - The weather forecaster is not always right. Dress in layers to adjust to changing weather and activity levels. Wear moisture-wicking items and carry a warm hat. You can find full descriptions of each hike at the SunRiver Website Hiking/Calendar page. We would love to have you join us. Happy Trails!

GARDEN CLUB LANDSCAPING IN SUNRIVER BY RON BIGGERS, SUNRIVER RESIDENT AND MASTER GARDNER Landscaping in SunRiver is challenging…to say the least! Our soil is highly alkaline, salty, drains poorly, and is low in organic material. From June through September, we experience intense sun 12 hours daily with low humidity and drying winds. However, by doing some homework before selecting plants, you can create an attractive landscape. Four critical issues to consider are: • plant hardiness (Zone 8 or lower) • plant sun tolerance • water requirements • soil conditions
Sketch your yard & label where these conditions exist: • Full sun (10-12 hours per day) • Part sun/part shade • Filtered sun • Wet/dry areas
Read the plant tags or research online to match plants to your growing conditions. • Sun Needs: ‘Full sun’ means 6-8 hours of normal sun, not our intense desert sun for 10-12 hours. Select sun tolerant plants; provide shade cloth protection until established. • Amending Soil: Some plants need more organic material. Amend the native soil with organic matter. • Planting Hole: Make plant hole 2-3 times as wide as the root ball of the plant and deep enough to fully cover the root ball. Backfill with amended soil. • Water: Desert plants like soil that drains well. For cactus, agaves, and other true desert plants, add coarse sand to the backfill (not organic matter, which holds water). Perennials like moist soil until established. Xeric plants need less water. Once established, cut back on water for all plants.

Walking the Labyrinth Often when we think of meditation, we think of sitting quietly. The meditation experience is much broader than that. Meditation can involve movement. Walking the labyrinth can be one form of moving meditation. Did you know that we have a labyrinth here in SunRiver? Our labyrinth is modeled after the labyrinth that is on the floor of the Chartres Cathedral in Chartres, France. It is a circuit labyrinth- meaning that there is only one path to the center and back. There are not dead ends, as in a maze. In the center of this style of labyrinth is a six petaled rose. It represents love, unity, beauty, purity, spiritual awakening, and enlightenment. Our labyrinth is divided into four quadrantsrepresenting the four elements or the four seasons. As you walk the labyrinth, you cross back and forth across these quadrants. The path twists and turns- just as life has its twists and turns- until you reach the center, which is also your center. The path out of the labyrinth is the same path you took in, only in reverse. It takes you back out into the world, with whatever you have gained. If you walk the labyrinth with intention- with a thought or a word- or if you just practice being fully present as you walk, you have practiced a moving meditation. One of our members will be giving a presentation on walking the labyrinth on one of the Wednesdays this month. Watch for the date in the SunRiver weekly email. All are welcome.
COMPUTER / PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB Have you been on the new SunRiverStGeorge.com website? The Computer Club is offering a class in March on the new SunRiverStGeorge.com website. If you are unsure about how to log onto the website, need some help with how to best use it, or wonder about all the features and functions, this class is for you! Also, this month (March) we are offering a series of free, informational classes on genealogy and DNA. If you’ve ever wondered exactly what you can expect to get out of a genealogical DNA test or which is the best DNA test for you, these classes will discuss the various DNA company tests and what you might expect of each of them. There will also be some discussion about how DNA genealogy might best fit into discovering your personal genealogy.

PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE Not long ago, flooding in British Columbia led to a double-barreled consumer emergency. Stores emptied rapidly of food and household items, and because both road and rail links were so badly damaged, there was no clear idea when regular deliveries would resume. Shades of the early days of the pandemic: once again, we’re seeing fragility in the modern retail supply system. It’s essential that we learn from this. Specifically- don’t wait until an emergency threatens. Instead, build a good-sized stockpile of food and other vital items in advance. Understand, we’re not advocating hoarding. The Canadian government was pleading with folks in B.C. not to panic buy, which would leave nothing for others (that turned out to work well there). Instead, how about a simple, targeted approach toward not just getting these items, but using and replacing them regularly. This isn’t only about food either. Do you tend to wait until the last minute to buy cat litter? Ever found yourself purchasing food or other necessities at a convenience store at 11pm? What about the allergy meds that keep your eyes from swelling shut every spring, or the lotion that makes your psoriasis flare-ups a little less painful? Suppose you were running low but kept procrastinating – and then an emergency made it impossible to get more? * Fortunately, there’s a bonehead-simple solution. Just three basic tactics can help keep you from running out of food, pet supplies, OTC meds or, oh yeah, toilet paper. *Next month we’ll continue this discussion and give some suggested solutions.
