What inspired you to transition from traditional motorsport to the E1 series?

Traditional motorsport was becoming too traditional. I was looking for a sector with more room for innovation. I had the opportunity to live the transition in motorsport from a pure thermal engine to an hybrid solution and then full electric. I needed to see myself involved in a new high-impact project. Combining this vision with my passion for the water really sparked the idea of building a new sport platform based on technology innovation and sustainability to celebrate and protect the unique lifestyle you can only experience in coastal areas.

Can you discuss the role that sustainability plays in the E1 series and how it influences your decisions regarding technology and partnerships?

Sustainability is at heart of the E1. For us, the ESG is not a PR function but an opportunity for value creation. Protecting and regenerating the environment is a must. Scientists confirm it and my personal experience of sailing in the Mediterranean sea tells me that the unpredictability and the intensity of the weather conditions are unexperienced. We need to do something if we want to keep enjoying the waters. The answer is a mobility based on the highest possible efficiency. The technology is developing. Albeit we are not there yet to cover all the needed uses cases, E1 series has been engineered by Alejandro Agag and myself to show that a more responsible mobility is possible and very cool.

What challenges did you face during the development of the RaceBird electric boats, and how did your previous experience in motorsport help you overcome them?

We developed our Race Boat in 9 months. A race in the race. The unique aspect of our project is that the powerboating world never saw a boat based on foils and electric propulsion on water. The two aspects represents a challenge and the combination of the two are even more of a challenge. The way we manage to address the electric part was modelling, simulating, bench testing and being surrounded by strong partners.

For the Foils, the CFD is a strong help. But being a very unique design, a lot had to be learnt and fixed with iterations through an empirical approach. That has been a journey for strong hearts and I did enjoy every single day.

Can you share your thoughts on how Rafael Nadal’s involvement with Team Rafa has impacted the visibility and appeal of the E1 series?

Sport is life. Sport is inspiration. Rafael is one of the most inspirational sport men in the world. A symbol of passion, power and mental strength. Rafael is helping E1 by sharing his enthusiasm for E1 on his media channels and by simply showing up at our events, enjoying the competition and pushing his Team to the next level. It is a privilege for me to have him in the E1 family.

Can you elaborate on the Blue Impact Programme that Rafael Nadal is involved with, and how it aligns with the E1 series’ objectives for promoting clean mobility and ocean health?

The blue impact programme is a project we have designed with Prof. Carlos Duarte to let the Teams compete not only to BE the best IN the world but also to DO the best FOR the world. We will measure how Teams will contribute to the environment awareness, how they will support concrete projects to regenerate coastal areas through Prof. Carlos’s science and whatever other initiative they will put in place to champion the waters.

In this issue of the Sunreef News Magazine we catch up with the shipyard’s CTO and Cofounder Nicolas Lapp for a chat about AI’s influence on the yachting scene and the trends that will shape its future.

To begin, how do you see artificial intelligence transforming the yachting industry today?

Nicolas Lapp: AI is revolutionizing the yachting sector on multiple fronts. From automating design and manufacturing processes, to enhancing navigation, energy management, and safety, these technologies will reshape how yachts are built and operated. We are witnessing the evolution of a very powerful and universal tool, that will keep evolving.

Let’s try and have a look into the future. What role could humanoid robots play in yachting?

When you take a closer look at the recent years and how robotics and AI have progressed, we may see some quite important changes on board yachts and superyachts. Robots could perform routine inspections in hard-to-reach areas or carry out repairs under remote guidance. This would improve efficiency and crew safety. The next generation of humanoid robots could for instance assist in crew duties such as guest catering.

Could the use of AI enhance the sailing experience on Sunreef catamarans?

That is one axis we are focusing on. Artificial intelligence, paired with advanced sensors, could help automate sail operations, increase wind power generation, and eliminate tasks traditionally associated with large sailboats. If we can simplify the sailing experience, we can attract motor yacht enthusiasts to sailing. Sailing means drawing power from the most natural source – if we can harness the potential artificial intelligence to boost performance and safety, the future looks very promising.

Energy management is critical in yachting. How could AI improve this aspect?

An AI-enhanced Energy Management System (EMS) should be able to use selflearning algorithms to optimize energy consumption and production in realtime. This includes managing electrical loads, harnessing renewable energy sources, and ensuring systems operate at peak efficiency. For yachts like ours, this is a great asset. We treat energy-efficiency very seriously and AI is a perfect tool to manage the amounts of energy produced through solar power or hydro generators and assess the energy used for electric propulsion and hotel loads. We have a couple of interesting ideas that we are working on at the moment.

What is the potential impact of AI on safety at sea?

Safety is one of the areas where AI can make a huge difference. By analyzing real-time data from sensors, AI systems will monitor weather, sea state, and obstacles. For example, they can adjust sails automatically to maintain stability in changing wind conditions. AI will also play a big role in predicting hazards like nearby vessels or underwater obstacles, enabling proactive adjustments to avoid collisions. Eliminating the human error factor can do a lot for safety at sea.

Let’s leave the AI aside for the last question. What other trends do you see evolving in the near future?

You may have noticed a concept of one of our sailing superyachts with an electric flying car on board. I think it’s a fascinating way of moving away from traditional helicopters and transitioning to ultramodern alternatives. Of course, here AI can also come into play with possible features like flight plan optimization or the analysis of maintenance needs. Looks like we can’t leave AI aside in the end!

Few people are aware that Sunreef Yachts originated as a charter company. Long before the launch of the first Sunreef catamaran, Francis Lapp founded Sunreef Travel, a charter fleet based in Madagascar, specializing in luxury yacht charters in the Indian Ocean.

In this interview, Francis and Nicolas Lapp take us back to the inception of this yachting adventure, sharing the story of how the idea to charter luxury yachts eventually led to the establishment of Sunreef Yachts.

UNCHARTERED TERRITORIES

SNM: How did the idea to create a charter fleet come about, and why was Madagascar chosen as the location?

Francis Lapp: Before I bought my first yacht, I used to race on Hobie Cats in Poland. I caught the yachting bug and soon found myself attending the Paris boat show. I came back with a 46-foot catamaran, which I knew would make a good charter boat – it was stable, large, and had a shallow draft. Around the same time, I participated in a rally race in Madagascar. I really loved it there and decided to put the yacht on charter in that location. This is how Sunreef Travel was created.

SNM: Was it a successful business from the start?

FL: I quickly realized that the business was not profitable with just one boat. The same year, we bought two more – a 56-footer and a trawler. Slowly, we began to have more and more customers, but at some point, I wanted to venture into high-end catamaran charters. This is when I realized I needed to build a yacht on my own, as the market didn’t offer what I needed. My boats had the advantage of being comfortable and family-friendly, but they lacked luxury. The first Sunreef – a 74-footer – immediately joined our fleet. However, the yacht did not make it to Madagascar because one of our clients loved it so much that he bought it.

SNM: How do you envision the future of charters?

FL: First of all, catamaran charters will continue to be successful. Today, we have more inquiries than available catamarans. Generally speaking, the market is beginning to realize that shipyards need to do much more than just build and sell. They need to focus more on services – and this is something we knew from day one. We started by providing services and then moved on to building. Charters, charter management, and yacht management should all be inherent elements of the customer experience.

Francis Lapp - 2008

SNM: You embarked on your journey with Sunreef Travel in your early twenties. Tell us about your memories from that time.

Nicolas Lapp: When I was 20 years old, I came to Poland, where my father ran his business in electrical installations. He wanted me to help him out, and I quickly became involved in more and more projects. I would spend entire days and nights working on surveillance systems with wires all around me. And then, one day, my father came back from the Paris boat show and said, "I bought a yacht. I want to start a charter business in Madagascar." He wanted me to handle the business, but I knew nothing about boats, had never chartered yachts, and had never been to Madagascar.

SNM: It must have been a period of intense learning.

NL: We had one boat at first, and then the fleet grew. started to hire captains and crews. I had to learn from scratch. I started to learn how to navigate, read charts, and even learned triangulation from a French journalist. Madagascar at the time had old, inaccurate charts, which made everything even more difficult. At the time, I would do everything – from attending boat shows to handling customer relations and bookings, marketing, and PR. I would pick up marketing materials from Alsace and drive to Cannes, Paris, or Monaco to set up the Sunreef Travel stand.

SNM: Can you recall the toughest challenge?

NL: One of our captains resigned a day before a charter. I had no choice but to carry out the charter myself. To make things worse, we had technical issues. I would do maintenance work at night and keep it quiet as the clients were on board. This challenge, however, is how I got into the technical aspect of yachts. We didn’t have much technical support in Madagascar, so I had to fix many issues myself and learn on the fly. This is also how my father and I realized that building a boat was perhaps not as complicated as we thought it would be. Later, when my father came back from a charter on a monohull motoryacht in Saint Tropez, he was inspired by the potential of the flybridge. This is how he got the idea to build a luxury catamaran with a flybridge.
