Sunreef News Magazine: Spring/Summer 2020

Page 1

Dear Readers,

Every year that goes by brings new plans, new destinations and a fresh perspective on life’s challenges. For my part, I begin the new year in the desert. set up camp in Dakhla, Morocco to take a short break between two stages of the Africa Eco Race –an exciting rally that Sunreef Yachts proudly partners. I enjoy a bit of silence on the shores of the Atlantic. couldn’t think of a fresher perspective and a better place to reflect on the year that has passed.

Last year was certainly a year of landmark projects for Sunreef Yachts. First of all, the 80 Sunreef Power debuted in Cannes. The positive feedback we received exceeded our expectations. The yacht’s Monaco showcase confirmed that the superyacht clientele regards big catamarans as an attractive alternative for monohulls.

Up till now, when thinking of a superyacht, most people would usually picture a monohull. This point of view is about to change. Over the fall season we were entrusted to build the world’s biggest luxury multihull motor yacht, the 49 M Sunreef Power. am confident that this project will shape a new perception of luxury crafts.

One of the industry’s most inspiring trends is the search for more sustainability. Last year we launched our first fully-electric Sunreef 50 sail catamaran, followed by an exclusive electric Sunreef 60. Our R&D department’s main focus at the moment is to provide a responsible cruising experience to all our customers and expand our EcoElectric line of luxury crafts.

Our main objective for 2020 is to seize on the momentum that has formed around Sunreef Yachts and to keep growing. We will introduce new models and aim to strengthen our position in the superyacht world. This will require effort and perseverance, but with your continuous support, we face our challenges with confidence. I want to thank you for being with us and wish you a wonderful year ahead.

Yours sincerely,

SPECIAL FEATURE

IN POLE POSITION

A LOOK AT INDUSTRY TRENDS WITH FRANCIS LAPP

Over 20 years of involvement with the yachting world I have observed many trends in the field of yacht design. Today, we are witnessing one of the most interesting evolutions of the industry: an increasing demand for voluminous catamarans. A part of the monohull superyacht market gradually shifts towards multihulls.

We see more and more big catamaran designs emerging. Monohull brands are now trying their hand at luxury multihull design. In the nearest future, we will see twin-hulled crafts gaining ground in the superyacht world. This trend is visible and tangible. But where did it start?

When I founded Sunreef Yachts, luxury catamarans were non-existent. Nobody believed multihulls would ever achieve their current status. In 2003 we launched the world’s first catamaran with a flybridge - the Sunreef 74. We discovered a new potential. From then, we kept pushing. We built the world’s first double deck catamarans, launched the first carbon-built multihull superyacht, installed a folding mast on a +24m craft…

Our power catamarans were the first to feature pod propulsion and the first to achieve Atlantic range. For Sunreef Yachts, the quest for innovation never stops. In this industry, there is a distinct line between trendsetters and trend-followers.

Today’s trend for big, ocean-going multihulls is a fact. Customer expectations have changed. Superyacht owners look for a better length-to-volume ratio, more stability, fuel efficiency and green solutions. They seek wide open spaces to enjoy with friends and family. They want to be close to the sea.

Sunreef Yachts has recently been commissioned to build the biggest luxury power catamaran up to date: 49M Sunreef Power – a 49m craft with a 17m beam. This catamaran, among other superyacht projects like the 110 Sunreef Power entrusted to our shipyard will become landmarks in the industry. We begin this journey in pole position.

Unveiled during this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, the Sunreef 60 “E” belongs to Sunreef Yachts’ Eco-Electric line of customcatamarans. With electric propulsion and smart energy management systems, this eco-conscious yacht offers a silent, vibration-free cruising experience and a responsible approach towards nature.

The Owner's dream was to sail in silence. The Sunreef 60

project aims to harness the power of the sun, sea and wind to create a truly natural and innovative sailing experience. This state-of-the-art luxury catamaran represents the essence of responsible cruising.

"E"

The Owner's fascination with cutting-edge technology, safety, efficiency and care for the environment – but most importantly the love of sailing combine to create the Sunreef 60 “E” concept. To make this vision a reality he turned to Sunreef Yachts. His catamaran was carefully crafted to the finest details, offering responsible boating, abundant in comfort, elegance and dependable performance.

The Sunreef 60 “E” features a revolutionary all-carbon fibre bimini with in-built curved solar panels generating 4.5 kW. Carbon fibre is also used for the mast and boom.

Powered from a 134kW battery bank, the yacht’s twin 55 kW engines allow for up to 6 hours of motoring in complete silence. The 600Ah house batteries allow to operate all the appliances for over 24 hours and power all-night airconditioning.

The Sunreef 60 “E” concept incorporates weight-efficient and sustainable materials: reclaimed teak for the floors, compressed paper for countertops, titanium for railings as well as textile rigging and recyclable sails.

The yacht welcomes up to 10 people on board with a smart layout including a generous master suite and four guest cabins. Her refined interiors are kept in a timeless and soothing style.

The main salon and cabins feature art pieces by Victor Vasarely from the Owner’s private collection. The saloon’s custom-designed main bar incorporates an Op art work by Andrzej Nowacki.

The Sunreef 60 “E” belongs to the shipyard’s Eco-Electric series introduced in 2019 with the launch of a fully-electric Sunreef 50 sail catamaran. Sunreef Yacht’s R&D department is currently developing several green features to provide a more environmentally conscious navigation experience. The technologies developed include in-house solar panel production and the use of naturallysourced materials for structural elements.

Infinite customization is available to adapt the 60 Sunreef Power and 70 Sunreef Power to every Owner’s exact specifications and navigation plans. Both catamarans will feature an innovative aft garage and hydraulic platform to store, transport and launch the tender and PWC. A first 60 Sunreef Power is due for a late 2020 debut.

Following the official unveiling of the 80 Sunreef Power at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the 60 Sunreef Power and 70 Sunreef Power join the shipyard’s new motoryacht offer. With first orders received Sunreef Yachts expands the range with two versatile models designed for worldwide navigation. Boasting powerful propulsion, extreme stability and seaworthiness, the two new motoryacht models offer the best of modern marine design for offshore cruising in ultimate comfort.

An interview with Rocco Sisto, Captain of the Sunreef 80 Above

We meet captain Rocco Sisto in Cannes on a busy day during the Cannes Yachting Festival. The helmsman of the Sunreef 80 A BOVE tells us about his personal experience with Sunreef Yachts catamarans from a seasoned sailor’s perspective.

How long have you been sailing?

I was convinced the yacht’s overall design was mainly aiming at comfort. Everything I saw inside and outside suggested extreme comfort but I wasn’t sure about the performance. It was a very pleasant surprise when we finally got on board for tests. We enjoyed some really good performance under sail. The time I spent working on BLUE DEER made me realize keeping balance between luxury and good sailing is an art that Sunreef is very good at.

Your adventure with Sunreef Yachts started with a Sunreef 74 a couple of years ago… What were your first impressions of the yacht?

I started out as a windsurfer over 30 years ago. From there, I went to racing on small fast boats like Hobie Cat, Flying Dutchman, Tornado, F18… I became captain in 2002, managing my time between working on luxury yachts and taking part in regattas on a maxi yacht and ORC class. The Sunreef 80 is a totally new model, in a totally new range, so the differences are easily spotted. The shape of the 80 is more aggressive and the boat’s presence is quite imposing with the increased height and new bulwark design. The 74 was already extremely comfortable, but I have to say the 80 is a whole different story. The spaces you find on board are just incredible and hard to compare with any other yacht in this length range. It was the Sunreef 74 BLUE DEER a luxury yacht intended for high-end charters. I remember that when I first saw it,

From helming a Sunreef 74 you switched to an even bigger cat, a Sunreef 80. Tell us about this transition. What were the first differences you noticed?

What sails have you put on the Sunreef 80 Above?

To me, the choice of sails is crucial. They are just as important as engines are for a car. I wanted ABOVE to perform, so I used special “engines”, with a 240m² square top main sail and huge gennaker of around 400m². All of this gives you nice sailing experience even in light winds. With 8 to 9 knots of wind you can reach 8 to 9 knots of speed which is impressive.

What about Atlantic crossings?

I’ve done 20 crossings in my life, including 4 on board a Sunreef Yachts catamaran. Personally, the ocean is where I get the most fun sailing Sunreefs.

What makes Above stand out as a charter yacht?

I think the question is not what makes ABOVE stand out in the charter world, the point is that there is no other valid competitor. It’s clear that there are lots of other catamarans out there, but none of them can compete with Sunreef Yachts. There’s something about the way they make you feel safe and stable without any compromise on luxury or good sailing. On top of that, the Owner of Above came up with a really nice layout for charters. The aft cockpit is amazing and we have Jacuzzi on the flybridge too. I have seen quite a few Sunreef Yachts catamarans and it’s always a pleasure to see how different they are from one another. It is hard to compare with any other catamaran brand – they are simply another level.

Experience the true dolce vita

Italy

An ultimate itinerary for a luxury sailing vacation

Sailing on a luxurious charter yacht is the best way to discover natural and cultural wonders of the Italian coast which has attracted people for centuries. Let Sunreef Yachts Charter offer you an amazing itinerary through the Pontine Islands to inspire your summer holiday.

Relatively remote, quiet and laidback, the Pontine archipelago is a cluster of seven islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast between Rome and Naples. Stunning natural scenery, an authentic Italian atmosphere, cosy beach bars and great seafood, it is an oasis for visitors seeking peace and relaxation.

The journey starts in a picturesque coastal town of Gaeta, known as a land of legends and history with origins going back to the Ancient Greek and Roman Empires reflected by the remains of gorgeous Roman villas, gardens and two castles that were guarding the town.

After a day and night spent in Gaeta, the luxury yacht takes guests to a small island of Ventotene. This picturesque islet used to serve as a place of confinement but is now known as one of the greatest scuba diving spots in Italy.

Zannone is the next island along the way that features stunning natural beauty and keeps dark secrets of Italian aristocracy who built a spectacular villa on the grounds of a medieval monastery. Thus from being a place of meditation, silence and prayer, the isle turned into a secret vacation retreat with masked parties, intrigues and scandals. It all ended in summer 1970 with the last owner of the infamous villa Marquis Camillo Casati’s tragic act of jealousy. The isle was then reclaimed by the state and is now home to hundreds of mouflon wild sheep which had been brought here for hunting and announced protected species afterwards.

Ventotene
Zannone

Leaving Zannone behind, guests will enjoy a stunning sail to Ponza, a beautiful island shaped like a crescent moon. Almost unknown to tourists, this magical place astonishes with sandy beaches, white granite rocks, orange-purple sea grottos and pirates caves where scuba divers still search for hidden treasures. Stepping off the luxury yacht, guests can taste iconic Italian dishes and regional specialties in one of local restaurants.

Palmarola

Having visited Ponza, the guests will head to a secret islet of Palmarola. This tiny uninhabited island is a realm of myths and legends. This is where a Greek hero Odysseus was seduced by the sirens’ songs on his way back home from burning Troy and had to plug his ears and tie himself to ship’s mast to resist falling into the alluring waters. On Palmarola, there is an incredible cathedral made of rocks jutting out from the sea to the sky, like gothic spires. A majestic building hides mysterious grottos in the shadow of stone arches, which can be visited by boat or explored during a swim. The colours of the cliffs are mesmerising, like from a painter’s palette. The water is crystal clear and still, the rock walls are smooth and shiny, covered in blue-orange corals and sea anemones.

From Palmarola guests sail back to Gaeta, where the sailing adventure ends. There is still some time to enjoy the onboard comfort while being treated to Chef’s delicacies before taking your a flight back to reality. Arrivederci!

WHY PUT YOUR SUNREEF CATAMARAN INTO CHARTER?

Interview with Aleksandra Chabros, Charter Manager at Sunreef Yachts Charter

In the midst of a busy Antigua Charter Yacht Show we meet up with Charter Manager Aleksandra Chabros. Between yacht inspections and test cruises, Aleksandra takes a short break on the flybridge of the Sunreef 80 ABOVE to tell us about optimizing the yacht ownership experience.

What can yacht owners benefit from by chartering their own luxury yachts?

Putting a yacht in charter is a very profitable enterprise for the owners. Charters generate income which means that the running costs of the boat can be partly or fully covered from the charter revenue depending

on the intensity of the commercial activity of the boat. The owners can decide how many weeks they want to use their yacht and how many weeks are available for customers. That is a very attractive vision for many owners we work with as it allows them to significantly reduce the total cost of ownership.

Also, a successful charter yacht is a recognizable brand with its repeat customers and its resale value is superior to that of private boats. Do yacht owners need to be involved in charter management?

It is always up to owners to what extent they would like to be involved in charter matters and decision-making processes. We need to know when

they are planning to use their boat, which destinations they would like to sail to, what sort of charter results they would like to achieve. However, once the plans are discussed and agreed upon, we can spare them operational details by representing their interests as central agency.

Can you explain what central agencies are and how they work?

In general terms, a central agency is a company which represents multiple boats on the charter market in order to provide each Owner with satisfying financial results. This is commonly known as charter management. A central agency has several tasks and operates on numerous levels. First of all, it promotes its fleet among charter brokers which maximizes the chances to have a calendar filled with bookings. The core is online marketing but a successful charter yacht must be displayed on boats shows too.

Second of all, a central agency coordinates all charter inquiries, handles bookings and stores all information about the operation of the boat.

Analysing that information allows us to advise the owners on optimal charter destinations where the boat should be based and help them build up a plan of operations for next seasons.

Last but not least, a renowned central agency, ideally a MYBA member, keeps an eye on the standard of charters and stays in close contact with the crew to make sure the clients are satisfied with each and every aspect of their charter experience.

What is MYBA?

MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association is a professional organisation acting on the international stage of superyacht industry in order to produce the highest standards of luxury charters.

Not only does MYBA provide formal, legal and ethical guidelines for agents and brokers but it also constitutes a trademark of quality. MYBA members are professionals with a proven track of success in the yachting industry.

MYBA is not just a trademark, it is a very active association which organizes boat shows, seminars and other kinds of professional events on a regular basis.

Why choose Sunreef Yachts Charter?

We are a leading catamaran charter agency with yachts operating worldwide. Most of the boats in our fleet are Sunreef catamarans. As a daughter company of the Sunreef Yachts shipyard, we know the product really well and closely cooperate with different departments of the shipyard. This allows us to maximize the efficiency of our work, mainly planning and promotion-wise.

We have over a decade of experience in luxury catamaran charters. On top of that, we are a full MYBA member with well-established long term relations with the most reputable brokerage houses worldwide. This is a guarantee of our professional standards and a deep understanding of the industry specifics. Last but not least, each owner has different needs and we treat each boat on a case-by-case basis. Our charter management program is therefore fully customizable which ensures a smooth and flawless cooperation resulting in satisfaction of both yacht owners and charter clients.
