CONCUSSION in SPORTS

STATISTIC

WHEN IN DOUBT

SIT THEM OUT! WHEN APPROPRIATE MAKE SURE AN ATHLETE USES THE CORRECT HELMET FOR THEIR ACTIVITY.

In 2009

NEARLY 250,000 KIDS AND TEENS were treated in emergency departments for sports and recreation-related TBI, including concussion.

Learn Concussion Signs

SYMPTOMS See full list of symptoms at cdc.gov/Concussion

Wearing a helmet can help protect athletes from serious brain or head injuries. There is no “concussion-proof” helmet.

Headache Dizziness Blurred Vision Difficulty Thinking Clearly Sensitivity to Noise and Light

IF YOU THINK AN ATHLETE HAS A CONCUSSION

USE THE HEADS UP ACTION PLAN

HELP KEEP ATHLETES SAFE from CONCUSSIONS AND OTHER SERIOUS BRAIN INJURIES

Remind your athletes to tell coaching staff right away if they think they have a concussion or that a teammate has a concussion.

Make sure that athletics follow the rules of safety and the rules of the sport.

Encourage athletes to practice good sportsmanship

Keep the Heads Up Action Plan at all games and practices.

1

Remove the athlete from play.

2

Keep the athlete out of play the day of the injury.

3

An athlete should only return to play with permission from an appropriate health care professional.

GYMNASTICS

TinyTots

We ask family and friends to remain outside the gym during class times to reduce distractions for our students, except for: 1) at least one parent will be asked to stay and observe any environment with only one staff member, 2) parents of new students may stay during the first class, 3) if a staff member asks a parent to stay. We encourage all parents to observe the last class of each session.

An introduction to each gymnastic apparatus is utilized with an emphasis on creative movement activities and organized circuit play. Instructors lead a warm-up, followed by rotations around events or skill circuits so that students may learn a wide array of fundamental movements and positions.
