Waihi celebrates a minefield mission History will come to life in Waihi during Easter with more than 50 World War 2 military vehicles taking part in a celebration of the famed Waihi tunnellers military service. Go Waihi coordinator Brian Gentil has joined forces with the New Zealand Military Vehicle Collectors Club in an event that will include driving family members of the tunnellers to the bottom of Martha Mine aboard the hvehicles to mark the upcoming 100th anniversary of the start of the war. “It seemed like the perfect chance to build on the event; and with Waihi Heritage Vision’s help the opportunity arose to recog-

nise the tunnellers at the same time.” The New Zealand Tunnelling Company played a key role in the Battle of Arras in France in World War 1, carving out and linking old tunnels and caves beneath the city. The military vehicle display – which includes jeeps, GMC trucks, Bren gun carriers and armoured transporters – will be held in Seddon St April 19, from 10am-11.30am. At noon each vehicle will have the name of a WW1 Waihi tunneller attached before descending to the Martha Mine pit to tackle an obstacle course. Military manoeuvres on show It had been a long time since his last restoration and rebuild project but when Tauranga engineer Rodney Lawrence saw a Dodge Command vehicle on display at Classic Flyers museum there was no holding him back. “I had done up a few cars and sold them when I left school, but that was about it,” says Rodney, who after 18 months sourcing parts then another 18 months rebuilding his 1942 Dodge WC 57 Command Car finished the project last November. But not one for taking the simple route, Rodney decided to do restoration on another two Command vehicles at the same time – another almost identical command vehicle used traditionally by US generals and a six-wheel version designed to carry more troops. “It’s not about glorifying war, far from it. For me the appeal has always been about their incredible engineering,” says Rodney, who takes the Dodge on more challenging, steeper terrain than his late model 200 series Toyota Land Cruiser. “Simply put it’s the driving experience. Driving modern cars there is nothing to do – but here there is a real driving experience; you have to put your driving skills into it.” From an engineering perspective, Rodney says the Dodge WC 57 was unrivalled by being made to a list of tough specifications the US

military wanted it to meet. “The US Government pretty much gave them a blank cheque; then within 16 months there were thousands of them being produced.” Rodney is one of 10 Tauranga enthusiasts displaying their vehicles at a special New Zealand Military Vehicle Collectors Club event in Waihi during Easter. Tauranga area representative Kerry Hitchcock will be joining him with his 1942 Willys MB Jeep he imported from Australia five years ago. Kerry, who recalls falling under the spell of the old World War 2 jeeps as a child when visiting his uncle, who used one on the Collingwood to Farewell Spit mail run, says it’s great to be helping keep this special part of history alive. “Talk to almost anyone and there is a connection,” says Kerry, about the military vehicles which following the wars became the first 4WD on many Kiwi farms. “They can pretty much climb a tree, they’re absolute workhorses.” While Kerry’s jeep was for the general troops, the slightly larger Command Car was equipped with extras including leather seats, an

Recalling how a project to restore one Dodge – that had been converted to a flatbed ute for farm use in the Rimutakas – turned into three, Rodney says it made sense to restore them together.

“When I bought this one on TradeMe there was another thrown in that was in the paddock, and I had always liked the 6X6. When I was sourcing parts for one it made sense to be doing it for three.” After extensive research he travelled the country collecting parts, as well as overland in the US, before beginning the hard work of

cleaning up parts, fashioning anything missing and reassembling. “But of course you’ve got to be passionate about it. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve put into it but it would be in the thousands,” says Rodney, who’ll complete the last two Dodge WC 57s in 18 months – with one to house a replica Bren gun. Grand Citroen C4 Picasso Intensive

Citroen Review Sizing up the Citroen: Discerning drivers Ronnie Miller, Jim Harvey and George Bryant.

Sideline Sid has finally found a vehicle for families of all sizes, which combines a seven-seater with genuine European flair and more than a touch of class. The all new Citroen Grand C4 Picasso only went on sale in New Zealand on March 1, but 72,000 have already been sold in Europe and we were keen to see if the European-manufactured car lived up to the Citroen reputation for innovation and revolutionary engineering. The Citroen Grand C4 Picasso seven-seater has arrived in New Zealand with two variants – the Intensive and Seduction models. On a beautiful autumn day we put the top of the range Intensive through its paces in town and then on some rural Western Bay roads. First impressions of the Intensive are clean lines of an aerodynamic-styled vehicle. However we were completely unprepared for the

versatility of the seven-seater, which offers an unbelievable number of seating and transportation options for family motoring – whether the clan is big or small. Families with school-age youngsters on the go would make good use of the two- three-two seating Grand C4 Picasso combinations, whether off to Saturday morning sport or doing the school run during the week. The first row of three rear seats has an amazing amount of leg room with a dropdown table and additional under floor storage. The back two seats are easy to access and with all seven seats individually adjustable they all give a high comfort level for all passengers. The Grand C4 Picasso five-seat combination, which gives a huge boot space, would be ideal for family or friends who want to do some serious long-distance travel around our beautiful country. Dropping down the rear seats is a 4 C n e o r t i breeze with another option being C d Gran e to utilise just one of the back v i s n te seats, giving a combination of Picasso In one seat and extra storage space. i D L BlueH Automatic dual zone air condiEngine: 2.0 n: 6-speed automatic p) @ h o tioning ensures no matter where Transmissi ower: 110KW (150b P you’re seated in the Grand C4 Maximum 00rpm Picasso, personal comfort is 4000rpm orque: 370Nm @ 20 1/100km .6 T Maximum ption (Combined) 4 maintained at the same level m C Fuel Consu for all. was particularly taken with the dual information screens slap bang in the middle of the dashboard. The 12 inch panoramic top screen displays essential driving information, such as road speed and fuel consumption, and is backed up by options of driving aids, such as the 360 degree camera. Using four cameras placed around the car, the driver can get a bird’s eye

view, a rear view or a panoramic front view. The seven inch multi-function touch screen has six touch buttons for climate control, driving and navigations aids along with telephone access. Hitting the road behind the wheel of the Picasso Intensive reveals easy driving at its best. A feather light touch of the steering wheel and a gentle purr from the two litre BlueHDi engine sees the Citroen glide around town before opening up on the open road. Extremely firm and positive braking is complemented by the blind spot monitoring system and distance alert, which provides extra safety on open roads. Adaptive Cruise Control is an option, which uses a radar sensor in the front bumper to maintain a constant distance from the vehicle in front. The system uses acceleration and

engine braking to maintain the vehicle speed. From speeds of 30 km/h, if the vehicle in front is too close the anti-collision warning will alert the driver with a visual warning; then sound and finally apply seatbelt pressure to avoid collision. A host of additional features makes the Citroen C4 Picasso stand out in a class of its own. Keyless entry and just running a hand over the driver’s door handle to lock the vehicle are just the start. Dark-tinted tailgate windows, adjustable head restraints on all seven seats, electrically-adjustable heated and folding door mirrors, and a rear window wash and wipers are just part of the Citroen European technology. Further driver aids include a multi-function steering wheel, black panel night-time instrument lighting and a handy trip computer. The Picasso Intensive we took for a test drive came with 18 inch alloy wheels, LED day-time running lights and City Park, to get in and out of tight spots in town along with satellite navigation. Our Picasso Intensive had a panoramic sun roof, equipped with a blind to provide shade in the sunny Western Bay of Plenty. We’ll leave the last word to John Hayes, Tauranga Citroen dealer principal, who says: “the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso has so many innovations, that we say to our customers to just use the features that they are comfortable in operating and utilising”.

Pioneering the hills and valleys For the townies who may have missed our ATV adventure with Honda’s new side-by-side, the Pioneer, featured in our rural monthly, Coast & Country – Bay Driver brings you highlights of our experience with this capable new machine, in our next two editions. This week we take a look at the many features of the two and four-seater Pioneer, its appetite for work and adventure. Next week, we’ll take you out for a spin. The old pioneers knew that innovation was the key to surviving and prospering in

the frontier. But they’d be in disbelief if they could foresee the high-tech donkeys of today. It’s good to know the pioneering spirit is still alive and kicking, with some smart innovation in the latest version of the humble mule – from the stable of Honda. Old Daniel and Davey would have given their coonskin caps to see Honda’s new mountain-taming beast – aptly named the Pioneer – and take to the hills in the new side-by-side ATV which is set to transport NZ farmers and outdoor enthusiasts to a new level of capability, safety and efficiency. The Pioneer from Honda was, appropriately, launched this month on the farm of a NZ pioneering family, in the stunning countryside of the Clevedon district.
