Time for a basic lesson: Ship Driving 101

















First rule of ship driving: Go around the rocky hard bits.

This seems easy enough, but seems to have been forgotten by one particular captain, off the coast of Tauranga this week.

As he was squeezing the fully laden container ship through the teency weency gap between Motiti Island and Mayor Island, which is only about, aww, 30 odd miles of clear water – apart from a very well charted reef, he did manage to nudge it. Actually, nudge is probably a bit understated. It looks to me like a full throttle ram raid. Seventeen knots, I am reliably informed.

That’s resulted in Rena the leaner getting a massive wedgy on one of our most stunning coastal reefs.

The SunLive team snapped aerial shots and were on the water early enough in the Waterline Magazine boat to get exclusive pictures from water level before the 1km exclusion zone was created around the scene. We go to great lengths to bring you the Bay’s news first.

Since then, Mr Harbourmaster has kicked all boats out a kilometre, so if you were planning a fish or dive on this favourite reef in the weekend, take another look at the chart.

In fact, it could be weeks before this ship is moved from Astrolabe and the effects on the islands and coast are anyone’s guess.

Seeing the ship grounded high on the reef, it’s pretty hard to understand how a skipper could get it so wrong – particularly in this age of electronic navigation and wizardry. A calm night and light swell, it’s not as if weather could have played any part in this grounding.

mechanical failure. But this latest mishap, in virtually open water defies belief. The findings of the investigation will be interesting.

One thing we are sure about: Our pristine coastline is no place for fools in boats, no matter the size. But especially ones carrying thousands of tonnes of heavy fuel oil that, when spilt off the coast, will mean ecological disaster.

It shows you don’t necessarily need high risk operations such as oil exploration to put our environment in danger – it can happen on a good day, with modern technology and a very common container ship.

Besides, these ships have so many whizzbang navigation gadgets, you’d think it impossible to hit a rock these days? Apparently not.

It could be weeks before salvagers can move the 236m vessel, but in the meantime, we are headed for an environmental disaster. While the clean up and salvage is first priority, you’ve got to seriously ask just how this cock up happened.

Just last year a ship ran aground on Mount Maunganui, apparently due to a

Police presence to grow in Mount Maunganui

Mount Maunganui Police are extending their presence in the community this summer with new open hours at the Arataki Community Centre and a drive to recruit more police volunteers.

Thirty police volunteers currently work out of Bayfair, providing a point of contact for the public to report anything they feel is suspicious, but police want to extend their community presence into the wider Bay of Plenty.

This initiative starts with Mount Maunganui Community Constable Rachel Walker working with volunteers out of the Arataki Community Centre on Wednesdays.

“The role of volunteers has evolved since we started at Bayfair in 2006,” says Rachel.

“There is now a need to focus on the wider community and with the community centre opening it went hand in hand.”

Rachel says police volunteers are a vital part of community police work; by wearing high visibility vests they provide a sense of security for the public, while also being a non-threatening point of contact.

“Many people report information to volunteers when they do not want to talk to the police. We get a lot of reports about graffiti and thefts, which police follow up.”

Recent figures show an 8.1 per cent drop in the number of reported incidents of property damage in the Bay of Plenty and a 12.3 per cent drop in Public Order offences.

Although it is hard to measure, the work of volunteers has contributed to the reduction in these incidents says Rachel.

“Police don’t have enough resources to be everywhere all the time and volunteers help reserve and report and keep the community safe.

“Volunteer groups throughout the Western Bay make a huge effort with assisting police action.”

While volunteers will work with

police at the community centre, Rachel says it is important they continue to have a big presence at Bayfair.

Bayfair centre manager Steve Ellingford agrees.

“The volunteers are the link between centre management, security, customers and the police,” says Steve.

“A lot of people go through Bayfair and we need to have that presence there.”

Volunteers are currently based at Bayfair Monday to Friday, but police would like to increase this to seven days a week.

“Ideally I would like to have volunteers on duty at the weekend, but we need more volunteers, any members of the public of any age can volunteer,” says Rachel.

Mount Maunganui Police are also launching a new ‘Lock it, Stash it, Carry it’ campaign to combat the rising number of thefts; there were 205 thefts from cars in Mount Maunganui this year, compared with 127 in 2010.

Solar stars cutting-edge design for the future

Solar power was brought out of the classroom and text books for a group of Tauranga Intermediate School Year 8 students.

In a competition run by Genesis Energy, sisters Madison and Tyla Gardiner and Korean exchange student Iris Yang researched typical household power needs, then designed and built a model house using cutting-edge technology.

The girls, who won the competition, spent 40 hours each researching about solar power and design to help them come up with a smart design that would maximise the building’s

passive solar heating together with the placement of solar panels.

Tyla says the project was “really interesting”, but she says the high cost means home-owners need to have a long-term perspective to justify it.

“It’s quite expensive at the moment (to set your house up on solar energy), but it you know you are going to be there at least 10 years then it’s worthwhile.”

Along designing a physical model of the house, the girls had to create a YouTube video about the process and the sustainable technologies used in the design.

The students each won a $130 voucher from JBL electronics shop while the school got education class sets of resources for science and technology.

An avid sketcher from a young age, Frances Ransley’s art has taken on a whole new dimension of colour and form since committing her energy to the hobby and joining the Mount Art Group.

Next weekend she is among many group members displaying her work in the group’s annual show.

“I’ve definitely learnt a lot. Lots of tips and techniques on different mediums for my painting.

“I will have a go at everything.”

“I let it evolve and grow, focusing on the paint and the forms.”

Every Thursday members get together at the St Peter’s Church Hall in Victoria Road to “paint, share and solve all the problems of the world”.

Earlier this year, Frances, who joined the group in 1998, became a life member.

The exhibition at the Mount Surf Club features about 100 works from 18 artists, along with works by senior Mount Maunganui College art students.

It also offers art activities for the whole family to try their hand at – including a children’s painting table and canvases set on easels.

“The canvas was a hit when we did it for the first time last year,” says Frances.

“We just sketched the outline of the Mount and the beach and anyone could just add to it.”

Last year’s painting was donated to the Tauranga Hospitals’ children’s hospital. This year the group is setting up three canvases for painting – all to be given to the hospital.

The show runs at the surf club Friday and Saturday, October 14-15 from 9am-6pm and Sunday, October 16 from 9am-5pm.

From a dream that began six years ago, thousands of hours of voluntary work has created a sanctuary for native birds and whitebait.

Sanctuary Park project coordinator Jim Pringle says the former wetland area has been returned to its original state as a whitebait breeding ground by removing a culvert in the Waiorahi Stream that blocked water flow.

“There has been a tremendous amount of support and sponsorship which has helped turn the idea into reality.”

The 4.5 hectare park project – which has been driven by the LifeZone Church – has been

revegetated with more than 50,000 seedling plantings to establish native habitat.

The park, which is accessed from Joyce Road, Pyes Pa, has been opened up to the public with boardwalks and walkways.

Jim says the area is already doing its part to boost whitebait numbers, which have been threatened by the destruction of breeding grounds.

He says native birdlife is also coming back in strong numbers, but the increased wildlife is attracting more predators so they will be looking at a pest management programme.

“From an educational perspective, there is a tremendous opportunity to do ongoing research in the park

on native wildlife populations.”

The park is being officially opened at 2pm on Saturday, October 15 by Tauranga MP Simon Bridges, followed by a tour with Kuaka ecologist Arron Conn who will describe the progress to date and future objectives.

Future work includes a gazebo, picnic and barbecue areas, static information displays and completing boardwalks and walkways so they are weatherproofed.

Jim estimates there is about 10 years more work to be done to turn the park into the gem they want to create for Tauranga.

There is a working bee on October 8 from 9.30am-12pm to tidy up ahead of the official opening.

Cutting time in emergency department Tauranga Hospital staff are working hard to reach their goal of a 95 per cent ratio to have patients admitted, discharged or transferred from the emergency department within six hours.

Bay of Plenty District Health Board chief operating officer Phillip Balmer says this month Tauranga Hospital is achieving 91 per cent.

“The average time a patient spends in the emergency department in the last financial year was

240 minutes or four hours.”

Phillip says if patients are admitted to a ward, staff try to match the right patient to the right ward, with the right staff members available to ensure the best possible care is provided for each situation.

Phillip says the latest evaluation of their demand forecasting and staff-to-patients reporting shows a match between the care requirements for the patients who were in the wards and the staff who were available to provide their care.

“Tauranga is a secondary hospital; it provides services including medical, surgical, paediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology and mental health capable of managing all levels of complex care up.”

The hospital contains 284 acute beds, 19 of which are paediatrics, 39 for health in aging, with an additional 10 for mental health of older persons, 24 for mental health, 21 for maternity, seven for the delivery suite and 12 for the special care baby unit cots.

Latin sports adventure

A group of 50 students from Tauranga Boys’ College have headed to Chile for a three-week sports and cultural trip in South America.

College sports director and trip leader Darrell Boyd says the group trip – which comprises rugby, hockey, volleyball and tennis teams – is the first multi-code trip to Latin America and follows two trips by the school’s rugby team in the late 1980s.

“By getting more teams involved it’s giving opportunities to a greater number of

boys for this cultural and sporting experience,” says Darrell.

The trip combines sporting competitions with cultural activities in four different regions, starting in Chile’s Santiago, before crossing the Andes ranges into Argentina where they visit Mendoza, then Cordoba, before finishing in Buenos Aires.

Darrell says they are expecting tough competition in all codes, including rugby, with the likes of Craighouse School in Santiago, who recently beat Wellington’s Scots College 30-0.

“I think they (Argentina) are ranked

better than us in pretty much all of these sports, so we are expecting it to be very competitive.”

All students have been learning basic Spanish to prepare them for the trip and being billeted by families. Excursions planned for the trip include visiting a gaucho farm, Argentinian barbecues, Incan relics Puenta del Inca, a day at a private beach and watching a game of football by legendary Argentinian club Boca Juniors.

“They are all very excited. They have been walking around the playground greeting us in Spanish.”

Physical and mental challenge ahead for premier referee Tauranga referee Mark Hester is expecting a physical and mental challenge as he takes the whistle in his first season of ASB Premiership football during the 2011/12 season.

Mark is one of 12 referees who have accepted an invitation to officiate in New Zealand Football’s premier competition.

The Australian-born referee has only been in the country for a couple of years, having moved to New Zealand in July 2009. He has been quick to make his make, however, and through his role as referee development officer for Waikato Bay of Plenty Football has been of huge benefit to the region.

This season alone Mark has overseen the training of 190 referees in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty – 158 taking their first step on the refereeing ladder by doing the Club Based Referee course and a further 32 going on to do their Level 1 Referees Certificate.

Mark started refereeing in 1989 at the age of 15, initially seeing it as just another way of being involved in the game.

At the age of 21, however, he reached a point where he had to decide between playing or refereeing if he wanted to go anywhere with either.

A move from Sydney

to Melbourne in 2003 saw Mark take a six year break from refereeing. Prior to his departure for New Zealand in 2009, he returned to referee at State League level. Once he was settled in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand, he started refereeing in the WaiBOP Football Federation 1 League and then moved quickly onto the Northern Regional Football League.

He says he is excited about refereeing in the ASB Premiership.

“I intend to soak up all the coaching I receive and use my experiences to help in the development of referees throughout the (WaiBOP Football) Federation.”

Mark is also hoping that through networking with officials from other federations, he may be able to set up exchange opportunities for promising WaiBOP officials.

Finding recovery in art A toilet seat mosaic, computer jewellery and dolls made from patterns, are just some of the wonderful art creations on display at the Turning Point Trust’s Revamped Relics exhibition.

The Turning Point Trust is an organisation caring for those recovering from mental health issues – the art is an integral part of their recovery.

The art projects have been made from unwanted donated goods and turned into creative artefacts.

Art tutor and coordinator Andria Goodliffe says the Trust has had many unusual items donated, including huge fence posts, fabric samples, an array of pottery and dress patterns from the 1950s.

One of the more unusual items is a mosaic toilet seat, created by Gail Dyson.

Using the toilet seat as a base, Gail created a frame that she says “might turn into a mirror later on”.

Part of the money from the art work goes towards maintaining the Trust and the artist can also choose to donate their profit back into the Trust as well.

In conjunction with Revamped Relics, the Trust is holding a Sew Retro event – a one day sale of the retro and vintage fabric, tablecloths, dollies, ties, aprons and more, for pieces to be collected for nostalgia or turned into a new project.

Revamped Relics is on October 10 to 14 and Sew Retro is on October 8 from 9am – both are at the Turning Point Trust in Historic Village.

Fitness trail in memory of active mother Mount Maunganui mother Christine Ryan loved to be active, running marathons, organising police charity auctions and looking after two young boys – and this week a new fitness trail was opened in her memory.

The mother of two passed away four months ago following a short battle with cancer, leaving behind

two young boys, Jack, 11 and Tom, 9 and husband Chris Ryan.

On Monday, her family gathered at Mount Maunganui Primary School with teachers, students, parents and members of the local community to open the new fitness trail they have built on the school field in Christine’s (Chris’s) memory. “Chris was a highly active person.

She ran marathons, went horse riding and was heavily involved in the school and community,� says

friend and parent Karen McGovern. “She was very much about the kids and made sure they were very active as well.�

Chris was an active member of the Tauranga Police Charity and was due to coordinate the silent auction at this year’s luncheon.

After Chris passed away, Detective Peter Blackwell and trustee members decided to donate $5000 of this year’s auction proceeds to the school in her memory.

Located at the school on Orkney Road, the trail is open to all community groups and individuals.

From the plant to the plate in Katikati Food producers in the Katikati area are expecting a jump in the number of tourists with the launch of the region’s food trail.

The food trail brochure and dedicated website is being launched on Thursday at Fantail Lodge. It was created to capitalise

on the area’s strength as a gourmet food producer.

a broader “seed to plate” approach to incorporate leading seed and fruit tree specialists King Seeds and Incredible Edibles.

The trail’s 13 businesses include a traditional baker, a pate and dip specialist, olive oil producer, an artisan cheese maker, macadamia nut specialists, salami and small goods-maker, fish smoking experts and a country estate restaurant among others.

“There are quite a few other unique food businesses, for example there’s someone making brownie and fudge.

“But for the purpose of the trail we’ve only been able to include those setup to take visitors.”

Jacqui speculated the reason why there are so many good food produc-

ers in Katikati is because of the area’s appealing lifestyle.

“Why exactly is that? It’s hard to say, but it could be the same reason why there are so many innovative businesses – because it’s a great place to live.”

Jacqui says a brochure with a map and information on the food businesses has been produced and is being distributed in Katikati and the wider Bay of Plenty region to attract visitors on self-guided trips.

“We are hoping to get a bit of interest from all the cruise ships visiting Tauranga, but along with the tourists we are hoping it will attract locals.”

World cup editing opportunity for Kris Mount Maunganui man Kris Haines gave up his job when he got an opportunity to edit Rugby World Cup highlight reels for the stadium big screens.

“I’m editing the Rugby World Cup highlights packages that play on the stadium big screens before the games.

“I’m virtually going nocturnal for the duration of the cup, as I have to edit the pieces overnight – but I’m actually enjoying the schedule.”

Kris says he is disappointed with his hometown’s lack of participation in the world’s third biggest event.

“I think it’s a shame that Tauranga wasn’t able to host any of the games.

“I’m not really sure why that’s the case, I haven’t been keeping up with local news or politics, but the fact that such a beautiful and vibrant part of New Zealand is not being highlighted during this time is really unfortunate.”

Kris is no stranger to the media world and says the highlight of his career so far is working on the movie ‘Boy’.

During his time at the post production company, Kris worked in a minor capacity on a number of different TV shows and films, including ‘Spartacus’ ‘Legend of the Seeker’ and Taika Waititi’s ‘Boy’.

“I remember thinking while I was working on it that it was going to be a really funny and interesting movie – which it did in fact turn out to be.”

Kris started his career in television more than three years ago and moved into radio half way through last year.

“I got into TV work almost by accident. I went to South Seas Film and Television School on the (North) Shore in 2007, not because I had a passion for the industry, but more because I didn’t know what else to do with myself.

After doing the New Zealand Radio Training School course in Tauranga, Kris got a job in Masterton working for Mediaworks as a Creative Writer/Journalist.

Students at Bethlehem College have been practising their Beatles songs to prepare for the senior school’s annual ‘Big Sing’ competition.

The ninth annual inter-house competition sees more than 150 Year 7-13 students from each of the school’s six houses competing at the Event’s Centre from 2pm today, Friday, October 7.

Beatle songs the houses are performing include ‘Twist and Shout’, ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’, ‘When I’m 64’ and ‘Hey Jude’.

Head of senior school Teri Culpepper says the competition is a fun event and tests house captains’ leadership in getting the full group organised and ready to perform with less than two hours to practise.

Houses are judged on tune, enthusiasm and movement, with the top group winning points in the school’s inter-house competition.

Looking for a rugby fairy godmother A special (extraordinary) full council meeting on Monday with only one earth shattering agenda item to be considered.

With Catherine Stewart, Larry Baldock and Tony Christiansen absent, it was left to eight elected members to decide whether or not there would be a big screen TV provided on The Strand for the last three or four Rugby World Cup games funded by ratepayers/council at costs ranging up to $47,158 – less $8500 offered by a bar owner.

It is easy to get carried away in the excitement of the moment, but it didn’t happen this time. Terry Molloy, an avid rugby fan, moved ‘Option E’ – a watered down version, one of six options – at a ratepayer cost of $29,850.

Wayne Moultrie seconded this, ‘pro forma’ (for the purpose of allowing a debate) after Terry had started to speak to his resolution before anyone had seconded it.

Terry said “economic development will be assisted in the long run with this sort of investment in the city”.

“Heart and soul is in question and we needed to prove we had one.”

After his impassioned speech, no-one else, including Wayne Moultrie, spoke in support and that resolution was lost 7-1.

David Stewart said he could see benefit to Strand businesses and the council’s role was to come in behind any initiative those businesses might propose.

He moved council could contribute up to $10,000 for road and traffic management and security, but the organisation required for a big screen project and funding was more properly left to private enterprise which would be direct beneficiaries.

Terry, understandably, spoke against (even though he eventually voted for it) saying he was frustrated with the negativity and what was needed to show leadership and find ways of doing things. He said the commercial sector was really struggling.

I said so were ratepayers, council’s finances, and ongoing rate increases.

The resolution was passed with Murray Guy opposing.

This will likely be the end of matters unless a rugby fairy godmother materialises with around $40,000.

As far as council goes, I don’t remember the last time we had a special full council meeting over one minor item like this and it really

begs the question as to why, when there are so many major issues requiring this sort of urgent consideration, resourcing and staff time facing council/ratepayers.

Picking up on regional In other meetings, I had raised the issue of ratepayers being confused with the layout of the rates bills.

TCC collects the regional council rates as part of TCC rates account and a cursory glance for many people goes something like this.

Ratepayer gets envelope marked ‘Tauranga City Council’, opens it, sees rates bill – amount at bottom thinks, ‘Oh no, oh my goodness… how does it get to that much, (or words to that effect), oh well, must remember to pay by due date.’

Once again the regional council flies below the radar screen and it is a source of constant wonderment how many people are either unaware or only vaguely aware of the regional council’s existence or what they do.

Mayor Stuart Crosby also remarked that as the regional council heavily subsidised their rates requirement with port company profits, TCC should also consider what effect on their rates requirement would be if those profits didn’t arrive in future years. Economically there is a $300,000 or so saving to ratepayers by TCC performing this service so we don’t want to stop it. We just need to differentiate between the two councils and the two separate rates accounts.

Gallery gobsmack In response to questions last week about council payments to the art gallery over and above the ratepayer grant/subsidy of $847,400, elected members were advised by staff that of the $18,000 or so in question, most of it was for sponsorship of exhibitions by private sponsors, but the money was channelled through the City Partners account as it quite properly should be. But it was absolutely astounding to learn that the art gallery had charged council $625 plus GST for the use of

the gallery for former CEO Stephen Town’s farewell function. Talk about biting the hand the feeds you.

This function could easily have been held over at the council building where there are a number of suitable venues.

Stephen had always quietly supported the art gallery and in my view is that this charge was quite inappropriate on this occasion.

Interesting too – you only find out about it one year later. Yes, Stephen left council a year ago.

Park rumblings

At TECT Park sub-committee, a joint committee between TCC and Western Bay there was a very full agenda, great attendance from users and even a rare appearance from the Bay Times at the WBOPDC offices, possibly expecting some blood on the carpet over a proposal to allow a Bush Railway and Old Sawmill at the park.

Happily this didn’t occur and the charitable trust proposing this addition was agreed in principle with the User Group Forum being given opportunity to comment as the formal details are worked out.

Some fears from other park users are competition for diminishing funding opportunities, location and suitability.

I said I couldn’t imagine anything more noisy than a 1920s sawmill and would fit the park well.

Te Matai Motorsport lease is about to be signed after a long arduous path that has taken a long time.

With a 35 year term plus two rights of renewal it is important that it is right first time.

As various users get to accept each other plus the owners (council/ratepayers) and as investment from all parties increases the potential in this public asset will become easier to administer and manage.

Psa ripples begin to spread The community support network being put in place in the kiwifruit industry is beginning to be called upon following recent discoveries of Psa infections in Whakatane, Waihi and Katikati, which have revealed the danger of infection is spread right across the Bay of Plenty.

There are a range of options available for orchardists who are enduring stressful times says Kiwifruit Vine Health chief executive Mike Chapman.

“It depends on where you are as to what’s available and what we are supplementing with,” says Mike.

“But yes, there have been people needing assistance, but a whole range from low level stuff to the more serious issues. We are expecting an increase and more next year.

“A lot of people managed to get a crop for this season, but things will get tougher next season.

“We hope that we have some R&D

there was keen interest to get involved in the cup due to the club’s 130-year history – it is one of the three-oldest rugby clubs in the country, a feat marked by the giant rugby ball displayed on Katikati’s main street.

“With the ball there we felt we really needed to do something to get involved,” says Lester.

He says the clubroom has been a “really exciting” place to watch the All Blacks games during the last few weeks and predicted numbers would jump dramati-

cally for the quarter-finals.

Lester says some German, Latin American and South Africans visitors have come along to watch the games at the club as well.

Lune Hein was “shocked and terrified” when she learned the lump on her breast was cancerous – thinking she was too young to be affected.

It was just before her 26th birthday when she spotted a lump high up on her left breast.

“It was there for quite a while.

The first time I went to the doctor they said it was just hormonal and was advised to take evening primrose.

“It was still there and it wasn’t getting any better. So I went to another doctor who straight away took a biopsy and identified it as cancerous.”

After her birthday, Lune had an operation to remove a 1.5cm lump from her breast. She says it was “really scary leaving my husband and heading into surgery”.

Lune was in the ‘all clear’, until she was seven months pregnant

and found a lump on her chest bone. After seeing a radiographer and having an ultra-sound, they were 99 per cent confident the cancer was on the bone.

Lune considered chemotherapy and radiation therapy, but decided to research ways to beat the cancer naturally.

“While I was pregnant, I tried ozone therapy and after my baby I went onto use Protocell – a natural alternative cancer treatment.”

Now 30 years old, Lune is just about ‘in the all clear’, with her last scan showing the lump to be only 1.9ml in volume, compared to 23ml as it had been.

She says it was scary going the natural way, doing something so different from many other survivors.

“Doing the opposite to what everyone else does and what the doctor does is really scary, but I did really good research.

“You need to make sure you are doing the right thing and good research is important.”

The Breast Cancer Walk supports those like Lune who are survivors, their families and friends and also remembers those who have been lost to breast cancer.

The walk begins at 9am from the Papamoa Surf Lifesaving Club, with participants asked to give a gold coin donation. All the money raised as a result goes to the Tauranga region to support women and their families through breast cancer.

There are two major prizes to be won on the day when supporters put their donations in the bucket. Top 10 Holiday Resort in Papamoa is providing a luxurious weekend for four at a beach front villa and Blue Biyou Restaurant is providing a meal voucher and a bottle of bubbles. Apata Hall finally rebuilt The original Apata Hall at the SH2 end of Wainui South Road was built in the early 1950s. The land was donated, as was the hand-milled timber, along with the sweat and blood and the donated home cooked scones during the build.

The hall was the hub for community gatherings and hosted many great parties during the years.

In early 2004, however, after a party had closed down, a foreign tourist decided to push one of the parked cars onto the front entrance and set it alight, destroying the hall.

Giving memoirs national meaning Is there someone or somewhere in the Bay of Plenty, off the beaten track or in hiding that the whole world deserves to know about?

The Memoir and Local History competition is looking for writers who know just the person or place.

This is a national competition organised by the Bay of Plenty region of the New Zealand Society of Authors and the focus is on New Zealand-Aotearoa.

The topic focus is who or what has a special meaning for you? Writers – amateur or experienced – are invited to send in their best writing on a place or person (present or past) that deserves to be better known and whom they would like to tell the world about.

The judges are award-winning writer Susan Brocker, whose speciality is Young Adult novels based soundly on historical research and Tommy Kapai Wilson, the inventor of Kapai the Kiwi and presently working on the iconic landmark, Mauao: Caught by the Morning Light.

At 95, Tauranga dynamo Dame Joy Drayton has finally slowed down. The woman who first shifted to the city in 1959 to run Tauranga Girls’ College is taking life a lot slower than in her glory days.

The former principal, councillor and community volunteer describes her life as “pretty boring” these days.

With age catching up, she shifted to a retirement home two years ago and now spends most of her time reading.

In some respects, it is a return to a core interest for the former English and History teacher. Dame Joy is a firm believer in

books. Her original motivation to stand for Tauranga City Council in 1985 was to promote books through an improved library.

“I was very interested in the library at the time. They did not have much support and it was in a terrible building that leaked.”

Four years after leaving the college, she was elected to council. After initially campaigning for library improvements from the outside, she believed it would be easier to make a difference as a councillor.

“I thought if I joined the council I would have a voice that people would listen to a lot more.”

After two terms on the Tauranga council

she turned her attention to the regional council, where – motivated by an interest in the environment – she served as a councillor from 1992 to 1998.

“I had always been very interested in the country – so I thought it would be good if I could help look after the environment.”

Active involvement in community groups at the executive level – including setting up the Elms Foundation and helping with the Historic Places Trust and Tauranga Arts Society – has been passed on to a younger generation.

Dame Joy remains interested in art and “very occasionally” paints. Last year she combined her interest in art and fostering youth by donating most of her art collection to the annual Treasured Art charity auction.

Gardeners’ delight growing Te Puna – an established park-like nursery which has been growing garden centre quality plants for almost 30 years.

“Our pricing strategy is purely wholesale,” says Paul.

“We are keeping our prices at wholesale rates – and aren’t compromising

the quality of our plants to save money.” The centre never runs specials, but offers consistently sharp prices with all plants at 50 per cent or less than standard retail prices.

The nursery also grows all the plants for its sister gardening centre in Taupo which opened in late August.

Overwhelming interest in new Te Puna nursery Grower Direct has prompted the business to triple plant propagation since opening in August.

Owner Paul Nielsen thanks gardeners for their support, saying the level of repeat visits and referrals from happy customers is far above expectation.

“The response has been completely overwhelming – I have been in retail for many years and the level of customer loyalty has been well beyond anything I’ve seen before.

“It’s outstanding.”

Paul says staff joke about giving some customers permanent car parks because they visit so often.

In less than two months since opening, Grower Direct has sold 40,000 plants. Paul believes the

success is due to great customer service from gardening experts and offering wholesale prices direct to the public.

“I think people have been really taken with the experience of coming to a dedicated gardening nursery. They see the staff as gardening experts and have been asking them for all sorts of advice.”

Vege garden back in full swing I expect many of you can’t wait to get the vegetable garden back into full swing; I know many people have started already.

Potatoes for Christmas should have been planted by now and early crops of other vegetables will have been planted with protection, but don’t be in too much of a hurry – we can still get cold nights yet and that can set things back.

Labour weekend is the traditional weekend for getting out and planting, especially with

tomatoes and cucumbers that can suffer considerable set back with the cold nights. At least we have had a fair drop of rain this week that has brought up the moisture content of the soil – that is good for sowing seeds or planting out small seedlings.

Be careful not to walk over your planting beds too much though when it is wet as this can compact the ground and ruin the soil structure.

When you get planting, don’t forget to plant some companion plants, that is plants that are beneficial to your vegetables by either deterring pests or conserving moisture. We have

some good information leaflets at Palmers with information on best companion plants to use and also what vegetables grow best with other vegetables. A good example of this is a traditional way of growing used by the American Indians and still used today; sow some sweet corn in a row and then when it is about 40cm high sow some climbing beans alongside the corn which will then use the corn to climb up. When the beans have got established you then plant pumpkins or squash either side of your row so that the big leaves will help to conserve the moisture in the ground, all will grow happily together.

If you like to keep organic in the vegetable garden, put Neem Granules in the ground when you either sow seeds or plant seedlings.

This will help to keep the pests off your plants and you will hopefully have great crops and a lot of fun.

Opening new gardening doors Welcome Bay Palmers has had its doors shut for a while now, but this weekend the store is opening its doors with a revamped look and same great service.

Tauranga born and bred Ian Wightman is the new owner of the store and is looking forward to providing a place just as it used to be.

“Palmers Garden Centre in Welcome Bay was always a popular meeting place and the garden centre is for the locals,” says Ian. “It was always extremely popular because the staff members are knowledgeable, people liked coming here and I hope to maintain that.”

Roading construction boosting economy Last week I visited the work underway on the construction of the Tauranga Eastern Link.

The largest state highway project ever to be built in the Bay of Plenty, it is 23kms long and extends from

Te Maunga to Paengaroa as a four lane highway with a central median barrier.

There will be 17km of new road, a toll system, three intersections, seven bridges, interchanges and landscaping.

The business case promised reduced travel times, safer and easier travel, supported regional growth and contribution to our economy.

The project is, however, bringing an immediate impact to our economy.

There are new access and haul

roads, trial embankments, ground improvements being undertaken, large drainage works and pre-loading along the route.

This will continue until 2016 when the new portion of state highway opens.

Council comes last again in job satisfaction The news is not getting any better for council. A couple of weeks ago we found that the WBOP District Council had one of the highest debt-per-capita ratios in New Zealand.

Dogs boost confidence and recovery The expression ‘man’s best friend’ means more than a cliche expression to Mount Maunganui dog-lover Tina Martin.

A “massive accident” when her car was hit by a truck and trailer 20 years ago left Tina with major internal injuries and, up until recently, she was restricted to walking with a stick.

She says the Tibetan Spaniel dogs she got after the accident played a large part in her recovery.

While she still walks with a limp, the regular exercise with her dogs has helped her recover and throw away her stick.

Tina’s four Tibetan Spaniels are among 700 dogs competing at the Tauranga Kennel Association’s championship show being held at Waipuna Park this Saturday and Sunday from 8.30am-5pm.

Tina originally had German Shepherds, but she was unable to keep up with them after the accident.

Struggling to give the large dogs the care and attention they deserved, she threw herself into researching other dog breeds to select a more suitable pet.

“They were too much for me to keep up with after the accident,” says Tina, who then chose to get Tibetan Spaniels – a smaller companion dog.

“I researched all different types of breeds and really liked what I read about them (Tibetan Spaniels).

They have a fantastic personality.”

Together with a sharp intelligence, the dogs have a very caring nature that sees them used to visit lonely elderly in rest homes in some countries.

Tina says her first Tibetan Spaniel ‘Tsar’ was her “anti-depressant”.

“He’s got me out and moving and given me a lot more confidence.

“I’m more concerned about going out with the dogs rather than being so focussed on not being well. They are a joy to have around.”

Tina competes at shows around the North Island twice a month where her dogs are judged against the breed standard.

“I find it a joy – I really do. Not only because you get to go out with your dogs, but it’s great with the people contact.” By Hamish Carter

The Ady and Flo show I did what I did…until Flo came to town.

My world has changed, not only has pretty boy Dan slipped while climbing into his undies, but uncle’s new whelp has arrived. Even I have to say that Flo is pretty cool, so let the fun begin.

It is going to be great having another walking and hunting companion. She might even help with this column.

But rules are rules – and my food bowl and my bones are mine. Just because Big D was so good to me and shared his food, (only with me mind you) just don’t think the same is going to happen with Flo, but ya never know. I may have some maternal

instincts and be well mannered and gracious.

Whatever happens, it’s going to be a lot of fun having her around and one fact is for sure, she will not be able to latch on to my tail like I used to with Big

D. The little girl is keeping a low profile for a few weeks till she’s had all her shots, become acclimatised and got a microchip. And after running around picking up the crumbs after a Labrador, I know all that’s likely to be left are the micro chips.

Those labs certainly never leave you the big ones.

Her first day at the office was a bit daunting, although she managed to find the staff room, including the fridge, meet the staff and complete a quick reconnaissance of the location of their lunches. All this will be noted in the Labrador brain food files for future reference and compiled on a Flo Chart.

So suddenly I’ve gone from

being the new kid on the block, under the Foodmaster Diesel, to become the elder, wise, matronly one. So many questions from the young pup.

“Patience, grasshopper. All will be revealed in good time.”

After just a few days Flo asked me about the large flappy things that land on the front lawn and take a bath in the fish pond.

The young whelp knew instinctively they needed dealing with, but came to ask me.

“Ah, those will be the freeloading ducks, Trevor the Mallard and Helen Cluck.”

Assertive player keeps centred As a dedicated netball player, Mindy Mincher’s assertive nature always sets her team in good stead.

The 12 year old has been playing the sport for three years – apart from last season when a broken foot set her back – and really enjoys the team game.

She plays for the Omokoroa Point School netball team.

Her mum Anita says Mindy definitely holds her own on court – usually playing centre position

– and really supports her other team mates.

Anita says Mindy also enjoys volleyball in the summer season and is looking forward to getting back into it. In her spare time she also enjoys swimming, making the most of the warm water around Omokoroa.

Kicking goals for soccer stars Dylan White’s goal of being a soccer star has been given a boost with his selection in a national squad of 11 and 12-year-olds training and competing in Sydney in January.

The 12-year-old is the only Western Bay of Plenty player selected to represent the Ricki Herbert Football Academy in his age group for the 10-day training squad and competition.

Dylan was spotted as an elite player by a coach when he attended an earlier academy soccer training course. Dylan, who lives in Papamoa, also plays for age-group Western Bay representative teams.

His mother Jane White says he is “absolutely buzzing” and is completely focused on doing his best in the sport.

“The holidays are coming up and he’s pretty tied up with training for rep teams, but he doesn’t mind. He loves it.”

She says Dylan is also planning some fun-

draising events including sausage sizzles and car washes to help raise money towards the trip’s cost.

“He’s been playing football since he was five and he loves it, so this is an absolutely awesome opportunity.”

The squad is in Sydney January 15-24 where they will attend daily training camps and have games against teams selected by New South Wales football. They will also take in the excitement of an A-League game of some of their heroes when Sydney Football Club play Gold Coast United at Sydney Football Stadium.

Jane says they are very excited about the great opportunity it offers Dylan to get a taste of international exposure at the elite level.

It is the first time the academy has organised the Sydney training camp and depending on how the programme goes there could be opportunities for top players to be selected for further training.

The revitalisation programme, which began with a full review of the building’s water-tightness, has breathed new life into the Cameron Road property.

under the ‘City Suites’ name to emphasise the proximity to downtown Tauranga, are expecting a boost in holiday and conference visitor bookings following the revamp.

The full programme has been run, managed and coordinated

by Independent Project Management Services. It has been one of the bigger recent projects for the Tauranga company.

“What we have done with Puriri is combining fixing these issues with a range of other work so the client comes out with a much better outcome,” says IPMS managing director Wayne Pittams.

“The focus has been on a modernisation and revamp within a

strict budget.”

Work on the building included a total exterior reclad, changing the roof pitch and decks, along with a waterproofing treatment to the whole building and bringing the property up to the latest building standards.

Wayne says the IPMS team are particularly proud of the Puriri project, which is a tribute to IPMS project manager Tom Vanstone, the high standards of all the contractors involved including head contractors, Hawes Building Solutions and the design team from Insight Architecture Ltd. “Insight and the Hawes team have been fantastic to work with,” says Wayne.

“They have produced work of a very high standard and a design with use of materials giving a sharp modern look.”

He says IPMS put a lot of emphasis into the detailing (flashings) to ensure the end product is water tight, to exceed requirements without exceeding the budget and providing a lot of attention to detail.

“The owner said, ‘fix it’. We take all the stress out of projects for our clients, City Suites being no different.

“I think we repaid the faith David put in us and the team we put together and the result speaks for itself.”

Wayne stresses IPMS always tightly monitors timelines, knowing how critical it is for commercial clients to have buildings fully operational as quickly as possible.

“We also ensure all claims are scrutinised and monitored through systems we have developed and use.”

Opera apprentice receives top honours Chase Douglas with University of Waikato Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Crawford at the Blues Awards event.

Former Tauranga Boys’ College student Chase Douglas received top honours from the annual University of Waikato Blues Awards on Friday.

Chase was awarded the Pou Ahurea award for Maori Person of the Year for his achievements in vocal performance.

Chase is a Hilary Scholar and is studying voice in his third year

of a Bachelor degree in music. The 2011 Wallace Corporation University of Waikato Blues Awards acknowledges the university’s top sporting and creative and performing arts students.

This year more than 50 blues awards were given out to athletes and artists representing a range of disciplines.

Catching the computer age Feel like you are being left behind by the computer age? The Tauranga SeniorNet Club is offering those aged 50-plus a chance to catch up with its range of courses.

SeniorNet Club chairman Brian McWilliam says another round of courses is starting in late October offering a range of courses for all abilities – including introduction courses.

“Our organisation provides tuition in computer technologies to people over the age of 50 with courses designed to suit the learning approach and pace of this age group,” says Brian.

Newcomers to computers begin with a five-week introductory course, before going

on to a nine-week ‘Computer Skills’ programme to build solid foundation skills.

“After the student has completed these 14 weeks – the five-week and nine-week courses – then they can go on to do any of the other range of programmes we offer such as digital photography or image editing.”

The courses are held in the format of one two-hour lesson per week at SeniorNet’s learning centre at the Historic Village.

Students and all members of the SeniorNet Club can use the computers when they are not in use for lessons.

Brian says there has been a slight fall-off in student numbers, probably due to the economic slowdown and more people learning computer skills at work.

“But there are still an awful lot of people

out there who haven’t confronted the technology.

“We have found there is a great interest in learning to access email communications with friends and families.”

He says it was great to see students “take off ” after learning the basics.

“We’ve got some very clever people who have achieved in all sorts of areas after completing the courses.”

On top of the foundation programmes, SeniorNet teaches courses on file management, email and internet skills, spreadsheets, digital photography, image editing, powerpoint and genealogy.

Enrolments are being taken on Tuesday, October 11 between 10am-2pm at SeniorNet’s learning centre at the Historic Village.

Ultra-fast broadband to 100,000 students by June 30 The roll out of ultra-fast broadband-enabling fibre to schools will see nearly 100,000 students around the country connected by July 2012, says Education Minister Anne Tolley.

Communications and IT Minister Steven Joyce says 97 per cent of schools will receive ultra-fast fibre-enabling speeds of 100 Mbps plus during the next five years.

“The remaining three per cent of schools, which are in the most remote locations, will receive a high speed wireless or satellite connection. No schools will miss out.”

Anne says UFB will transform New Zealand’s education system, making it one of the most wired in the world.

“Fewer than 200 New Zealand schools currently have bandwidth capable of the ultra-fast broadband speeds that are essential for applications such as high definition, two-way video conferencing.

“This technology means that students anywhere in New Zealand can have access to the best teachers and online resources anywhere in the world.”

Four schools in Tauranga, with an estimated total of 4100 students, are part of the first year deployment plan (to July 2012) and will be connected by Ultra Fast Broadband Limited.

A menu packing some punch To begin the evening, I enjoyed the bread selection; served with fresh dukka, extra virgin olive oil, black olive and sundried tomato tapenade and basil pesto dip. I am unashamed to admit that when I ran out of bread, I got my fork into the small dishes of flavour – the dips were that good. The basil pesto dip was particularly my favourite – made with fresh pesto and cream cheese. It was smooth, tasty and so easy to eat.

Dine@Fourth prides itself on having the finest steaks in town, so it was up to my dining partner (the ‘steak expert’) to test this for himself. Selecting the T-bone 450g steak with a mushroom sauce – medium rare – the aged cut was flame grilled to perfection just as the menu said. Juicy and full of flavour, the steak was gone in the blink of an eye.

For me it was hard to choose, but I settled on the perfect choice of Thai-style chicken kebab on a bed of pilaf rice. Soft chicken pieces with a crispy grilled coating, with the lime flavours perfectly complimented with a mango salsa.

Not only steaks and chicken, but lamb, pork, venison, fresh fish, seafood and pasta feature on the menu. Chef even keeps tofu on hand for the vegetarians.

Adding to the amazing food is the salad selection. Every main meal means a buffet-style trip to the salad bar, where you can choose from at least 12 seasonal salads. When I visited it featured Thaistyle nashi pear, avocado, waldorf salad and many more. Go as often as you like and select a combination, the choice is yours, making the mains incredibly healthy and cost-effective. The salad bar

changes with the seasons and has almost 50 different salads during the year.

And what better way to finish than with dessert. As a brownie fan and a chocolate lover, I have high expectations from my dessert and the triple chocolate fudge brownie surpassed my expectation. My dining partner and fellow dessert connoisseur had the butterscotch and white chocolate cheesecake – one of the more unique flavour combinations I have tried. No need to fight with the biscuit base like so many supermarket cheesecakes, it was creamy, delicious and the perfect way to top off the night.

The owner and chef Mike Landells prides himself on making everything on the premises from scratch – apart from the breads – from the desserts and dressings to the sauces and dips. There is also a wide range of gluten-free dishes available on the menu.

Micro greens for magic flavour As a chef I have always loved the aroma of fresh basil. Planting basil next to tomato plants helps with disease resistance so it is often used with tomato in companion planting.

Pairing the two ingredients in a dish also enhances and compliments each other well, but let’s bring that flavour to another level.

I have noticed since growing micro greens how the aroma is more pronounced and so is the flavour. The concentrated flavour is sweeter and

infuses quickly with sauces at the last minute, without bruising or cutting up mature leaves.

This is my new flavour secret; you could wait for some of your basil to mature during summer, but gram for gram, the flavour is slightly less distinct.

Sow heaps of basil seed and harvest while they are young for a taste treat sensation.

The recipe for this week uses potatoes, sour cream and smoked salmon – a combination that goes together well. Basil micro greens and a tomato and basil dressing complete this restaurant-style starter. Living micro greens selections will shortly be available at the Good Earth Organic store in Gate Pa, we also sell them at the Bethlehem market.

Smoked salmon & new potato terrine Serves four

Ingredients 200g smoked salmon slices 3 Tbsp sour cream 4-5 medium scrubbed new potatoes Small bunch of fresh dill or chives, chopped Flaked sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 50mls avocado oil 150mls tomato juice Small hand full of basil micro greens Method Cut potatoes into even slices, boil in salted water till just cooked, but not falling apart. Drain and season well and while still warm carefully mix through the sour cream. Line a loaf tin with plastic wrap then line that with a layer of smoked salmon, From

allowing spare to fold over top so the whole terrine is encased. Place a layer of potatoes on the bottom then a layer of smoked salmon and a sprinkle of chopped dill or chives. Repeat the process until loaf tin full. Fold the last layer of smoked salmon to encase, then cover in plastic wrap and place a heavy weight on top to compress. Chill in the fridge for a least two hours or overnight. This allows the starch from the potatoes, sour cream and smoked salmon flavours to permeate the terrine and set. For the tomato dressing, whisk the tomato juice and avocado oil together, season with salt and pepper and drop in a few micro basil leaves to infuse.

Leave this dressing at room temperature. When ready to serve, simply turn out terrine, unwrap, cut and serve with dressing and for that extra burst of flavour – a sprinkle of micro basil. Compliment the flavour even more by serving with a pear-scented Pinot Gris.

Summer snapper Let that fresh snapper roll in. It’s almost summer and we are going to be blessed with this yummy fish, so boys get those lines out and bring some fish home for cooking.

I was given some snapper the other day and made it the way Momma cooks it; quick, easy and tasty.

Snapper coated in Egg and Parmesan 1 cup plan white flour 5 snapper fillets – cut into desired protons sizes 4 eggs 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese 1/3 cup milk

Salt and pepper Lupi light olive oil Non-stick pan Beat eggs, parmesan and milk with a little salt and pepper, set aside. Heat pan with a little Lupi light olive oil, coat fillets in flour dust well, dip in egg mixture and cook until golden. Serve with a crisp fresh salad.

Mural town festival plans The countdown is on in Katikati with only days to go before the town bursts into creative mode with the Legacy Trust NZ Mural Contest and Arts Festival.

Katikati Open-Air Art Inc festival committee chairman James Denyer says he is expecting a highly successful event during October 11-16.

He says everything is coming together for the third mural festival.

“It’s going to be fantastic, we’ve got so much going on there will be

something for everyone to enjoy.”

He encourages people to enjoy the live painting taking place in the centre of Katikati by nine artists from Tuesday to Saturday and to cast a vote for the most popular mural.

“There are lots more fun activities to enjoy during the week including the sculpture exhibition and contest, chainsaw sculpture demonstration, mural tours and street

entertainment and culminating in the prize-giving and funfair on October 16.”

The winning mural gets permanently erected in the town centre, with all other murals auctioned as garden art at Decor Gardenworld in Bethlehem on November 3.

The Bay of Plenty Vintage Car Club is holding their annual swap meet – essential for vintage car owners to keep their hobby alive.

The swap meet is to be held on October 16 at the clubrooms on Cliff Road from 7am.

Not just the swapping of car parts, enthusiasts can swap books, magazines, memorabilia and accessories.

Mount Maunganui Community Patrol, in conjunction with Mount Maunganui Police, is holding another popular and informative ‘screw day’.

The Safe Plates Day on October 29 is designed to show members of the public how to attach number plates using special tools to ensure it cannot be removed or tampered with.

Police say the method makes number plates extremely difficult to

steal and since the campaign started in the Western Bay of Plenty three years ago, no plates have been stolen from vehicles that underwent the procedure.

The event is at Bunning’s car park on October 29 from 9.30am to 3.00pm, with a sausage sizzle.

Wikipedia defines language acquisition as ‘the process by which humans acquire the capacity to perceive, produce and use words to understand and communicate’.

For babies and infants, much of this language acquisition is through verbal and non-verbal cues which parents quickly learn to read and understand.

Rapid development

Young children usually develop language rapidly, moving from crying and cooing in infancy to using thousands of words and understanding their meanings by the time they are ready to enter school. Language development is essential for communication and is one of the most rewarding experiences for parents to share with their children.

Children learn to speak and understand words by being around

adults who communicate with them and encourage their efforts to talk. All children go through the same stages of language development, although each child will develop at his or her own pace. At every stage there are a number of things you can do to encourage your child and share in the experience together.

Language development flourishes during the first few months of life as infants respond to the sounds around them. Parents soon recognise their baby’s different cries for different needs.

By three or four months of age, infants begin to make their own sounds known as ‘cooing’. Older infants begin to babble by repeating strings of syllables such as ‘babadoobeeba’. At about one year, some infants can say a few recognisable words

such as ‘dada’ and ‘mama’.

Even at this early age, there is much that you can do to encourage your baby’s language development. Start by talking to your baby as often as you can while you are feeding, bathing and changing. Use your baby’s name when you speak to them and make different expressions with your face.

Singing to your baby and infant assists the acquisition of their first or native language in developing tone and inflection. It is never too early to start reading out loud to your baby even if they are your usual magazine or a recipe book. Your child is listening to everything you say.

Common words

As your baby gets older and approaches their first birthday, they will begin to recognise some common words such as ‘juice’ and ‘bye-bye’. You can play simple games such as peek-a-boo and counting toes.

Rhyming and finger plays are great ways to encourage language and fun as well. Continue to talk to them as much as possible and point out the names of objects. Add to their single word sentences. For example, when they say ‘dada’, your response can be ‘Yes, Daddy is home now’.

Creating a spring wardrobe Welcome to the October edition of Fashion Focus and the beginning of daylight saving. Spring is definitely with us and with this season comes the unpredictable weather.

The right time to start a family When it comes to starting a family, many couples are delaying the process until they are well into their 30s.

There are many reasons why baby plans are put on hold, but one factor that is often not taken into consideration, is the biological clock.

“Couples who come to my clinic are often surprised to hear just how much female age impacts on fertility,” says Fertility Focus’ Juliette Millar.

“It is well known that a woman’s reproductive ability decreases as she ages, however, the rate of that decline is often not appreciated.

“A woman in her mid to late thirties is only about half as fertile as a woman in her early twenties and by the time she is 40, her chances of conceiving naturally are severely reduced.”

Boost your chances

It’s not all doom and gloom, however. Approximately 60 per cent of women in the 35-39 year age group will be pregnant within one year of trying and 85 per cent within two years. There is much that can be done to boost fertility as well.

“Perhaps one of the easiest ways to increase chances of conception each month is for couples to time intercourse for their fertile days,” says Juliette.

“The ‘fertile window’ can be as few as just one or two days a cycle and the day of ovulation can vary widely.”

The right time

With 12 years experience, Juliette specialises in teaching couples to understand their fertility through charting the menstrual cycle. By learning how to anticipate ovulation, couples are able to time intercourse for their most fertile days and greatly increase their chances of conceiving each cycle.

“So remember, there may never be a ‘right time’ to start a family, but there is a wrong time – and that’s when time has run out.”

Healing needs time Last week we looked at the importance of realistic time frames in recovering from health problems.

I remember my GP saying to me many years ago that the concept of convalescence seems to have gone from our perception of healing. I recently had some dental problems and I was very grateful for the instant relief of painkilling medicines, but we need to understand that many problems, even with the best possible nutrient intake, just take time.

I spoke to someone recently who had suffered from tired and aching legs for many years. We introduced a range of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants to her supplement programme and she now can go to bed without the thought of having broken sleep from aching legs. “The District Health Board is committed to providing the best possible health outcomes for the whole of the Bay of Plenty community,” says DHB chairperson Sally Webb.

“It continues to be our priority that our people are getting the best possible services when it comes to their health.

Police seeking felon

Police are asking the public to help locate Jared Neil Malcolm.

The 27-yearold is wanted by police on several warrants for failing to appear in the Tauranga District Court on September 23 for dishonesty and drug related offending.

If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it WEBSITE with Michelle Whitmore of Zeald

In the last article, I focused on the two key success factors of any website; being the number of visitors to the website and their conversion rate.

By increasing your website traffic and/or making changes to your website that improve your conversion rate, you will immediately enjoy improved website success.

While I promised in future articles to talk about what makes a website persuasive so you could have

the best chance of converting visitors to the site, I want to first talk about the importance of measurement tools for website success.

The most successful websites are those where the website administrator is constantly taking the pulse of the website by checking their results, then making changes and ‘testing, measuring and tuning’ their content.

Just like any business model, it is rare to find one improvement that will result in a 100 per cent improvement to the website, but it is possible to put in place a change that results in a one per cent improvement. Maybe it’s a headline, an image or a product offer that will do the trick.

The bottom line is that if do this process 100 times and secure a one per cent improvement each time, you have more than doubled your business over time.

When you are searching for the one per cent improvements, it can be impossible to discern whether the changes

you are making are influencing the website for better or worse without having metrics in place.

It’s for this reason that

you need to have a dashboard that gives you the insights you need. This might be a built-in dashboard, as is the case with Zeald websites or you might choose to use an external provider like Google Analytics – or you can even do both.

The good news for website owners is that the metrics are freely available. This means there’s no excuse for not having measurement tools in place to help you take the pulse of your website and measure the effect of your changes, for better or for worse.

Don’t jump in the deep end Yes, things are getting financially tighter out there as the credit crunch is starting to bite.

Winston enigma: The man who would be king The Enigma that is Winston Peters, for over a 20 year period the man who would be king, and nearly was, is a fascinating individual, the man who has that wonderful smile even when he is seething is something to behold.

Helen Clark used that technique when caught on the hop, schooled I believe by some Irish chap. Mr Peters has a great distrust of all around him, and any team that is set up to do anything at all, is free to come to any conclusion, but in the end it will be done his way, he has the final say, on anything and everything.

There are leaders around the world who are coming to grief with that sort of logic but it seems to work, perhaps in Fiji but not for too long I think. The story of a mother watching 2000 soldiers marching on parade, and she is heard to say, look they are all out of step except my wee boy.

A great many people, have spent a great deal of time, and money, to try for a better deal for the people of NZ, using New Zealand First, only to discover their is no New Zealand First, (only Winston First) and that is the sad fact of it.

At least with John Key you know where you stand.

He screws the middle income earner, because he cannot get it from the poor, or the people who do the buy house, sell house, tax free system etc.

As Rob Muldoon said, life is not supposed to be fair, and National are certainly living up to that. The Greens promise fair play, could it be, you have tried the rest, now try the best, as John Kennedy put it, think what you can do for your country.

Roundabouts and development

Hot pool shock This morning I went to the Mount Hot pools for the first time since they reopened and was shocked at the general state of the complex after the lengthy closure.

An absolute disgrace both in appearance and condition with temperature in remaining spa pool woeful. The other pools adequate on a warm spring day.

What has been done? More to the point – the cost!

What also surprised me was that patrons were conspicuous by their absence!

One spa pool has been filled in with concrete and a pathetic set of outdoor furniture (hardly robust) has been put in its place!

The large shade sail and smaller ones have all gone – where are they?

The clothes boxes on the outside of the changing rooms are an absolute disgrace less of them and cheap plastic boxes – again hardly robust. Where have the wooden ones gone?

Once upon a time there was a nice road at Te Maunga and after a lot of money was spent by ratepayers and taxpayers at great cost to both, we now have a roundabout.

So far we have roundabouts at: Truman Lane at Te Maunga, McDonald Street, traffic lights at: Jean Batten Drive and the Toll Road.

The rest of us have all paid for most of it one way or another (cost is millions) yet the only purpose for any of them is more development profits.

The latest scheming seeks for Council to pay for better access out of Belk Road

onto SH29, that will be essential as part of a resource consent by any developer and has nothing to do with safety on SH29.

It has everything to do with access to Belk Road and that is only needed for future development purposes and no public road usage or safety.

The developer needs to provide its own access at its own lands and its own cost. The proposed plan will slow SH29 traffic flow for the vast majority of users.

This is not a safety issue it is all about commercial profits.

Key government’s overseas debt

The overseas debt of the Key government has now gone from $18 billion in December 2008 to $40 billion in June 2011 (Statistics NZ). This means they have borrowed $22 billion since being elected – 3 years of budget deficits.

The previous Labour government had 9 years of budget surpluses and saved a total of $16 billion ($18 billion saved into the NZ Superannuation Fund less $2 billion overseas borrowing).

As well as borrowing $22 billion over 3 years the Key government has also stopped saving into the NZ Superannuation Fund.

Simon Bridges describes this as respon-

sible economic management and getting on top of debt. In fact the Key government has steadily increased its spending with almost no increase in its income.

It has an economic policy that is not working and is based on unaffordable tax cuts.

The Key government is not getting on top of debt.

It is handing its debt over to some other government in 2015 or beyond to sort out. This probably explains why our international credit rating has now been downgraded from AA+ to AA. Peter Dey, Welcome Bay.

Massive handouts to top earners Again some of the top earners in our country have been given another massive handout. The head of the Waitemata District Health Board, Mr Davies, as given an increase of $80,000 to bring his earning to $480,000 p.a.

The former Treasury Secretary, Mr Whitehead,

was paid $960,000 for 11 months work plus another $350,000 final pay.

State Services Commissioner Rennie had his salary increased by $30,000 to $480,000 and the Minister of Education, Karen Sewell, reached $670,000 with her final handshake of

$111,000.

All this excessive expenditure is going on whilst our Government is trying in vain to obtain overseas coverage for their disaster insurance in an effort to aid the Christchurch rebuild.

With the rising cost of living which the workers, beneficiaries and superannuitants have to absorb without any fiscal relief, how can any, any, increases in ‘fat cat’ salaries be seen to be responsible? The National Government has and always will be a government for the well to do and to blatantly thumb their noses at the people to whom they are appealing to return them to power, is an insult. These so-called lower classes are the workers who keep the wheels turning which create the lifestyle the ‘fat cats’ are enjoying. An election is coming.

Passive poison in wind As I drive down my local road past all the shelter belts hiding kiwifruit orchards on my way to have my latest round of chemotherapy I also ponder, like T Kapai, Sun 30 Sept, the effects of passive poisoning downwind of crops being sprayed by agri chemicals.

The effect of hi cane on my intended retirement income of 200 acacia melanoxyns is startlingly obvious. They are burnt and bent specimens, no use for timber and now of little use to me other than a thin barrier between the direct line of spray and my home citrus orchard. Someone made the comment recently that acacia melanoxyns would be a good tree to plant near kiwifruit orchards to detect spray drift, it certainly shows the drift at my place.

The sooner orchardists realise that

shelter belts are shelter belts and not spray barriers the better.

All the talk about new nozzles and improved safety practices seems to have bypassed my part of the world, spray damage the same as every year.

What amazes me is somehow it is my fault.

I have been threatened, patronised, ignored and insulted by orchardists and admit I cannot feel sorry about the PSA infection. As the grower at a recent Katikati meeting was quoted as saying, ‘it is nature biting us in the bum’.

Yes, nature does have a way of having the last word, but what a shame this areas total desperation for a quick dollar has given us not a Bay of Plenty but a Bay of Dis-Ease.

Blind eye to agrichemical damage While man continues to go on measuring agrichemical sprays according to their chemical properties we will continue to turn a blind eye to the damage that they do at gene level both in plants and other living creatures of this world.

The detection of these sprays in plants can be measured using quantum physics equipment long after chemical testing indicates that the residue has apparently ‘disappeared’ from plant tissues. It is minute quantities, parts per million and billion that do the most damage to living tissue by distorting the gene patterns. This compromises life itself.

Authorities here in The Bay have been attempting to make it mandatory that when toxic agrichemical spraying is being carried out neighbours are informed, cones are placed along the boundaries, plastic bags put over letter boxes to warn the postman and special spray nozzles are used. If this is deemed necessary because the wind-assisted

spray drift and the diffusion of the spray through the air travel past boundary fences and tree shelter belts then surely it makes sense that surrounding orchards, be they ‘organic’ or not are being polluted with the agrichemical to a lesser degree than the one being treated.

This scenario is similar to the way in which the toxins of cigarette smoke affect both the non-smoker and the smoker himself when they share the same airspace.

This is why the organic kiwifruit orchards are also being infected with PSA. Quantum physics testing shows us that they cannot be totally spray-free when neighbouring orchards are using the agrichemicals.

Forcing others to pay for wishlists What a pathetic society we have become. Not a day goes by without some handwringing group, individual or bureaucrat pleading and begging to council/government to force others to pay for their wishlist.

Andrew von Dadelzen wants council to force people to pay for a big screen so people can watch rugby. Half the population of Tauranga winging to the council to provide people with a big screen TV, and the mayor flip flopping and giving the OK. Interfering busybodies like Larry Baldock intent on mob rule willing to dish out stolen ratepayers loot hand over fist for the common good. The editor of a local newspaper thinks it “realistic” that your children be forced to undertake nanny states interpretation of oral and anal sex because “some” parents are not capable of educating their children. The Labour party want to penalise the productive, and those prepared to invest and save

for their own future.

Nobody getting off their backsides to do anything, apart from asking “whats the council/government going to do about it.”

The people of this country have been infected with an awful disease and I see no cure in sight. All this hand wringing, begging and looting makes my skin crawl. What happened to the nation of proud, industrious, and inventive kiwis who got off their arses and did stuff because it needed doing? What is worse is these looters and bludgers have no idea they have been brainwashed by the child molesters of the mind, who have created a nation of mindless clones incapable of thinking (or doing) things for themselves, who are of the belief things can only be done under the control of national or Labour governments - both of whom are keen to perpetuate this destructive mindlessness.

Choir singers denied rugby tickets?

From media reports, it seems that the excellent 48 Choir(s) of about 30 members each that perform the 20 National Anthems at many of the Rugby World Cup match venues so beautifully were to receive free match tickets as some small recognition for their many hours of practice and volunteer work.

Reports suggest that in some instances these have been denied to the Choirs.

If these reports are correct, this is a shameful about-face, illustrative of a money-hungry and ungrateful attitude which will win no friends.

In matches that are heavily booked, the choral singers could well be accommodated in front of the barriers and furthermore, they could and should have been provided with a stage to stand on when performing.

My revision of the Doctor’s dream It’s been a while since I visited Hunter Thompson Land in the column, what with the Doc being dead and all, but things are afoot so this week we’ll sneak back for a peek.

Before that, however, there’s a gig next week that you might like to note down.

I have, over the past few weeks, given a bit of stick to the REAL Tauranga Festival, but it’s hard to be unhappy with the two bands that they have coming to Tauranga next Thursday, October 13.

The Phoenix Foundation and The Thomas Oliver Band are two of Wellington’s finest, the former a purveyor of quirky pop tunes and much more, the latter a tough modern blues band.

They’re down on The Strand as part of the festival with local boys Nine Mile Stone playing support, and tickets cost $30. Let’s hope the weather hangs in there this time around.

But, as I opened by saying, this week we’re plunging back into the strange and wonderful world of the late Dr Hunter S Thompson, fearless commentator on the search for the American dream, drug fiend extraordinaire, and a man who wielded his pen like a giant scalpel to expose hypocrisy and greedheads.

Well the good Doctor’s been dead for six years now but, after over a decade of wrangling, his one and only novel, a book he wrote

as a very young man on his first journalistic assignment in Puerto Rico, which was finally published in 1998, The Rum Diaries, is set to hit the big screen.

To say that the film has something of a troubled production history is like saying that Hunter Thompson enjoyed the occasional drink.

It was first optioned in 2000 and Johnny Depp and Nick Nolte were signed to star. That attempt never got beyond the development stage.

In 2002 it was set up again, this time with Benicio Del Toro and Josh Hartnett starring. Once again it never got beyond development.

It is possible that Hunter himself was not the easiest person to deal with. He certainly seems to have had little patience for the manoeuvrings of Hollywood.

There is, for instance, a famous letter that did the rounds after he sent it to the woman heading the production team in 2001: “Okay, you lazy b****, I’m getting tired of this waterhead f*** around that you’re doing with The Rum Diary… Nobody needs to

hear any more of that Gibberish about yr.

New Mercedes and yr. Ski Trips... all you are is a goddamn Bystander, jabbering like some half bright Kid with no focus except on yr. own tits... I’d much rather deal with a Live a****** than a dead worm with No Light in

his Eyes... I’m in the mood to chop yr. f****** hands off. RSVP. Hunter.”

Sounds pretty typical of the Doc to me, but it might not have been what a Hollywood producer expected.

But things with the film were revitalised in 2007 when Johnny Depp’s production com-

pany took over things. Depp, in what – if the film is good – will be considered a moment of left-field genius, hired Enlishman Bruce Robinson to write and direct. I say left-field, and I mean it. Robinson has not directed a film for seventeen years and the last one he did direct was a complete flop.

But Bruce Robinson has one thing on his CV that stands as a guiding light to cinephiles: he wrote and directed Withnail and I. Now if you don’t know that film, don’t worry, it wasn’t a success at the box office either. But with the subsequent rise of VHS and then DVD it became possibly the highestregarded English cult comedy of all time.

It is a story of two out of work actors who drink a lot, go on holiday by mistake, and utter more outrageously quotable lines than two unemployed wasters have any right to. Like Hunter, Bruce Robinson felt excessively burned by Hollywood and turned his back on the movies.

But now he’s back, along with Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi and Richard Jenkins and The Rum Diaries will hit cinemas in America at the end of this month. It should be a blast.

The organisation works closely and cooperatively with health providers, but consumers can be assured of total impartiality. This free seminar is part of Central Baptist’s ‘Community Service Seminar’ series, which is designed to inform the

community of the many and varied organisations who can meet their needs.

It is followed by afternoon tea and everybody is welcome to attend. No registration is necessary.

Dir: Ariel Schulman, Henry Joost Catfish is a strange but very enjoyable film. It’s sort of a documentary, but its fly-on-the-wall approach contains more than a few scenes that appear set up. Oddly, it doesn’t really matter: there is a real and fascinating story here, sort of a cautionary tale, but with something approaching happy endings all round.

It’s a tricky film to describe at any length because the cover implores viewers not to give Comic book heroes can have some pretty silly back stories, but nothing gets . This much sillier than Thor is the final superhero to be shoehorned into the upcoming Big Reunion movie which will unite Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America and Thor (am I missing anyone?). The difference is that while the others are basically yer normal guys, Thor is actually a mythical Norse god. So there are possibly some suspension of disbelief issues here… Ignoring all that, it’s quite a fun movie, directed by Kenneth Branagh as if it’s high Shakespeare with biffo special effects and a very respectable cast (including no fewer than two Best Actor Oscar winners!).

Another week another Jason Statham movie. I think I said that last week.

This time it’s Thirteen , which is a remake of a rather good French film. It involves a young bloke who, needing money for his family, intercepts a letter meant for his neighbour containing rules to join a ‘game’ which will make him a packet. The catch – which he later discovers – is that it involves playing something similar to Russian roulette. Jase is actually fairly incidental to the story and what was once a taut claustrophobic black and

away what happens. So I’ll try not to. The film starts with directors Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost making a documentary about her brother Nev, a photographer. He is contacted over the internet by a young girl, Abby, who makes a painting from one of his photographs.

An online friendship ensues with both Abby and her older half-sister and with the latter it seems almost ready to become a relationship.

In Perrier’s Bounty Michael (Cillian Murphy) is a chancer.

He owes money to Brendon Gleeson’s mob boss Perrier but complications ensue after an altercation with the debt collectors during which his helpful neighbour shoots one of them. So Michael finds himself on the run along with her and his own unreliable and possibly terminally ill father.

What with In Bruges, The Guard and this, the Irish seem to have a fine handle on blackly funny crime thrillers. While not quite as sharp as those two, Perrier’s Bounty is still good stuff.

Overzealous scientists are at it again in The Frankenstein Syndrome , trying to create a “universal healing serum” from illegally harvested stem cells. Told in flashback after the whole shebang has clearly gone horribly wrong, pretty young researcher Elizabeth joins the secret research team, becoming quickly obsessed with their mission before slowly realising that no one gets to leave, except possibly the odd reanimated corpse. Tough, violent and tightly made, this modern variant on Mary Shelley’s oft-told tale suggests that writer/director Sean Tretta is one to watch. Horror fans will be happy.

But all is not as it seems and when the filmmaking trio sense things amiss they head out to find Abby and her sister. What they discover is a surprise.

How much of Catfish is real, how much is re-enactments, is hard to tell, but as a parable for the internet age, it is touching and considerably smarter than you expect. It’s a film with real heart too and well worth seeing

Robots, boxing and Wolverine Hollywood has seen its fair share of boxing movies – Ali, The Cinderella Man, The Fighter – but new release Real Steel looks set to ‘up the ante’ with a match between steel and brawn.

Set in the future, Real Steel features a world where boxing is a popular sport, but humans are not the ones doing the fighting. Instead, pro-boxer, such as Hugh Jackman’s washed up boxer character Charlie Kenton, programme giant robots to do the battle for them. Spurred back in the game by his young son, Charlie takes on a discarded robot to fight to the top.

‘Harmony A Plenty’ the Bays’ Barbershop Chorus is on the look out for fellows who sing in the shower and/or sing along with the radio in the car.

The group offers free singing lessons and provides music and CDs to help singers learn the songs at their own speed. The group sings a range of songs from the

1920s to the modern day – most are well known and get great acceptance from the chorus’ singout audiences.

The group has two open nights, the first on October 10 at 7pm at St Mary’s Church, corner of Girvan Road and Marlin Street. The second is at Bethlehem Community Church on October 17 at 7pm.

Just a boy at heart

At just 11 years old, James Rolleston’s life changed forever. Plucked from obscurity, his crazy outlook on life and catch phrase ‘you egg’ would soon become an instant Kiwi hit in the film ‘Boy’.

But the now 14-year-old boy shys away from attention and prefers to take life easy, despite being the face of one of New Zealand’s top grossing films of all time.

“It had a big affect on my life,” James says, reflecting on Boy. “I was 11 at the time and all I wanted to do was to have a go at acting. I thought once the acting had been done that would be it.

“All the publicity has been the hardest part. Working with Taika (director Taika Waititi) and the film crew was a great experience, I enjoyed that and then attending the film festivals in Utah, America and a few months later in Germany was pretty amazing.”

Recently moving to Otumoetai, James says he doesn’t get recognised too often, but keeps a low profile.

He used to be an avid weekend sport player and hasn’t been able to play any weekend sports since ‘Boy’ took off.

“I go surfing at the Mount when I can and I’ve got to know some of the surfing guys – they’re cool.”

Surfing was something James had just begun when filming the upcoming documentary-feature film ‘Eat Some Ice-Creams, Do Some Bombs’, written and directed

by Tim McLachlan.

late January, James says it was some long days, but a lot of fun.

“Most days, I had to be up at 6.30am, get showered, have breakfast and get into my clothes for a particular scene, then the van would take us out to the location.

“I would stay on set, with a couple of mates while the others would come only for the time they were needed.

“I had just started learning to surf so I spent more time under my board than on it. The other guys are professionals and taught me a few skills – just got to get in the hours of practise.”

Since ‘Boy’, James has worked on a number of adverts, a short film and has done quite a few interviews for different newspapers. He says while he wants to do more acting later on – “I wouldn’t mind acting

in a war film or one based around sea diving” – his main focus is school.

“I was away from school for eight weeks during the filming (of Boy) then when they started editing, piecing the film together I had to fly up to Auckland for a couple of days at a time.

“I’m trying to concentrate on my schooling and getting back into my sports again will help.

“I want to become a marine biologist or do conservation work as a career.”

Multi-skill training opportunities Lifezone Church is offering part-time internships for young, passionate Christians who want to play a practical role in the life of their church, develop life skills, experience personal growth and enjoy a sense of great satisfaction and fulfillment.

Lifezone internship applicants can apply for a broad range of training from technical production (lighting/ sound/multimedia), graphic design, video production and stage performance (worship/drama) as well as training in the more traditional fields of children and youth ministries and global mission.

Students can either choose to spe-

cialise or get a broad understanding of all contemporary church components.

Some training may involve work outside of church with industry professionals.

Lifezone offers great facilities to enable students to get practical, hands-on experience and has a faculty of experienced teachers and mentors. Lifezone prefers students to be self-funded, but can help in securing scholarships and grants for successful applicants. All courses include a compulsory external Bible study component at one of New Zealand’s top Bible training colleges.

Samoan church tradition first This Sunday, October 9 at 9.30am as part of its morning service, for the first time in its history, St. Enoch’s Presbyterian Church is celebrating White Sunday.

White Sunday is a holiday in Samoa, falling on the second Sunday in October. It is a day for parents and communities to acknowledge and celebrate children. Special programmes during church services include scriptural recitations, Biblical story re-enactments and songs.

Children receive gifts – often new clothing and or school supplies – on White Sunday and are allowed privileges normally reserved for elders, such as being the first to be served food at family meal time.

On White Sunday, Samoan women and children dress completely in white clothing. Men will wear white shirts with either white slacks or the traditional ‘ie faitaga form of the lavalava.

White Sunday is also celebrated in Tonga.

White Sunday is a holiday giving thanks to God for children. It became widespread in the 1920s in commemoration of Samoans who succumbed to the influenza epidemic of 1919.

This epidemic, introduced through the ambivalence of the New Zealand colonial administration, took the lives of 1/5 to 1/4 of the Samoan population – many of them children.

The people prayed earnestly for God to free them from the epidemic and White Sunday is a day of commemoration and thanksgiving that the Lord rescued them.

The truth is relative People today believe that truth is relative (rather than absolute) or that truth is whatever someone perceives it to be or wants it to be.

This is a sign of the times, because truth must be devalued, diminished and sidestepped so that the iniquity, deception and error of these last days can be manifested, as the Bible foretells.

Psalm 119:160 says: “The sum of Your Word is truth.” Jesus says in John 17:17: “Your Word is truth”

and 2 Timothy 3:16 states that all Scriptures is inspired by God. So, God's word in its entirety is truth: It doesn't just contain truth, it is truth.

That means that truth is absolute and that the only right perspective on truth is God’s perspective, as revealed in the Scriptures.

Experiences do not validate or prove truth so God’s people need to hold fast to His word and to His Spirit, who is the Spirit of Truth.
