We’ve had a rash of responses to our column last week, on curious ailments.

Foremost was an invasion of emails and letters from our Scandinavian-descended readers who pointed out, some with fairly creative hand gestures, that they have inherited the Viking Finger phenomenon from their ancestors.

We’ve also received some correspondence from some of you with quite peculiar symptoms and also we sympathise, we cannot publish all the details here as it is a family newspaper and some of your revelations should really be kept within the sanctity of doctor-patient confidentiality.

Except we can’t resist some advice for Surfer Steve of Papamoa, whose complaint of a peculiar skin ailment may be more common and easily cured than you imagine. We suggest you should try washing the sand out of the crotch of your steamer, you may find the rash eases.

For the rest of you, thanks for the insight into your medical misadventures. Please see a doctor immediately. Maybe the concept of an ‘Ailment of the Week’ wasn’t so smart, after all.

“Hi Brian – I was very amused reading your story ‘Viking Finger’. I too have an inherited problem finger – a crooked, very pronounced second finger on the left-hand comes out every second-generation female.

However, my youngest daughter has it too.

Lots of funny stories associated. My father was Norwegian – my paternal grandmother and a Norwegian female cousin had the same. - Ingrid Wicksteed.

Did you realise that there were those people living in New Zealand long before any Maori came? They had set up homes and stone circles and lived happily here.

Then groups of Maori arrived, who fought

and killed many of them.

Some lived together, which explains the fair-haired Maori who used to live in parts of the north. The Maori got many ideas from these people.

Look especially at the patterns on the meeting houses etc.

They are true Celtic patterns.

Even the Maori waka have a great resemblance to the Norse boats. Perhaps we should be reminded ... that this country once belonged to the Celts!” Elsie Jones.

Grandma’s letter

Iris Stockwell of Tauranga sent us a lovely note, saying she always enjoys reading the columns as they are so ‘tongue in cheek’. Thanks Iris, I’m not sure that’s the way the Race Relations Commissioner sees it. Never mind, Iris offers this story, which doesn’t mention Vikings, but includes finger issues that we thought you’d find entertaining: “Letter from Grandma. She writes…

The other day I went to a local Christian bookshop, saw a sticker that said: ‘Honk if you love Jesus’ so I bought one and put it on my bumper.

Boy I’m glad I did! What an uplifting experience followed!

I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection; just lost in thought and didn’t notice the light had changed. It’s a good thing someone else loves Jesus, because he started honking. It was then I found out that LOTS of people love Jesus.

The guy behind me screamed: “For the love of God! Go Go!” What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus!

Everyone started honking so I leaned out my window waving and smiling at all these loving people. I even honked my own horn a few times to share the love!

There must have been a man there from Florida, as I heard him yell something about a “sunny beach”. I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger up in the air.

When I asked my grandson in the

back seat what that meant, he said it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well I’ve never been to Hawaii; so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign back. My grandson burst out laughing... even he was enjoying this religious experience!

A couple of people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started to walk towards me. It was then I noticed the lights had changed, so I waved to all my brothers and sisters, grinning, and drove on through the intersection.

I noticed I was the only car that got through before the light changed and I felt kind of sad for all the love we had shared; so I slowed down leaned out the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time.

Praise the Lord for such wonderful people”. Signed Grandma.

The Prime Minister visited this week and among his ports of call was the new birthing centre. Here at RR we are baffled why the National team are handling this, surely a birthing centre opening should be the role of someone in labour?

But the name’s where the similarity ends. Because the Tauranga Munro, named after Marilyn Munro, is an imposing, boisterous pack animal – a rottweiler.

Owner and pre-eminent breeder Ian GeddesCook of Omokoroa talks adoringly of Munro –

“wonderful temperament and personality, strong, loyal with a loving heart”.

But Rottweilers have been getting bad press lately. GeddesCook isn’t fazed – he’s heard it all before.

“There’ll always be a bad one of a breed. But the real problem is with owners.” He’s said it a thousand times.

Just last week the Auckland owner of rottweiler guard dogs, which mauled a woman to death, got home detention and ordered to pay $25,000.

Then a District Court judge slammed the breed as “notorious” after a pre-schooler was attacked.

“Look,” says Ian, a health executive. “They are exuberant. You are more likely to get knocked over by a rottweiler than bitten. The problem’s only more significant because of size and strength.”

He’s not in denial nor being defensive, he’s explaining.

“They can be dominating in the wrong hands. That’s why rotties need boundaries; that’s why I wouldn’t sell to a couple if they were uncertain, inexperienced with big dogs and they had children under five.”

Like any dog, the rottweiler needs to be family-oriented and socialised. “It needs to get on with the rest of the world – so it needs exposure to strangers, children and other dogs.”

Ian’s had “a bond; an affinity” with rottweilers for 29 years.

“I wouldn’t advocate them for everyone. But they are lovely loyal pets.”

And when a Christchurch judge said owners of rottweilers had “a high degree of responsibility to keep them under control” Ian says he’d probably agree.

“I wouldn’t let anyone take my dogs to the shops because of the public perception. I would take them on a leash. It would be my responsibility.”

Eight charities have been chosen as recipients of this year’s auction with Tauranga St John and the Acorn Foundation being the Tauranga CIB Charitable Trust’s main recipients.

Tauranga CIB Charitable trustee Detective Sergeant Pete Blackwell says they have a world record of 1500 people joining them at ASB arena.

“We are supporting the Acorn Foundation and St John – who need about $5 million for a new facility.

Merivale Primary School is a decile one school and is the only one in the Western Bay, so we’re going to support them, along with the Kathleen Kilgour Centre.

“We’re spreading our cash to a whole lot of good areas.”

Mother Jenny Noble has documented the many misdiagnoses and even dismissals her children have received.

“This is one of the complex issues we face in NZ; getting co-ordinated care for patients with complex conditions.”

With no cure for the life-threatening disorder, Sarah says her biggest challenge is going out into the community.

“I have to use a wheelchair, and navigate stairs, fences, carparks.

“Lots of little everyday things are harder; most people don’t even think of them.”

The siblings have tried many procedures to minimise ML III’s impact.

“Pain was pressing down on me all the time, like a dark cloud, and I never realised how much it affected me until it was gone.

[After one treatment] I took six steps; it was like a weight had been lifted. I felt like a new person,” says Sarah.

Pizza robbery in city

A Merivale man accused of pointing a pistol in the face of a pizza delivery man and robbing him of pizzas has been remanded in custody.

The 22-year-old appeared in Tauranga District Court charged with aggravated robbery and was granted interim name suppression

The driver was delivering pizza to a Merivale address just after 9pm when a man presented a pistol and demanded he hand over the pizza.

Mount bar faces closure

One of the Mount’s most popular bars is under the threat of closure due to three objections to its application for a liquor on-licence earlier this year.

Vaudeville Bar and Pizza Library Co. owner Jessica Payne is beside herself at the prospect and says she has suffered continual harassment from the objectors since day one.

Jessica applied for Vaudeville’s licence about

five months ago, and has relied on temporary licences to allow her to trade.

She’s attempted to sort the problem out with the objectors via mediation, but her attempts so far have failed miserably.

Early cyclone warning

Increased risk of a tropical cyclone threatening the Bay of Plenty and the East Cape is being predicted by Niwa for the coming cyclone season.

Niwa is also forecasting a busy finish to the tropical cyclone season this summer, with reduced activity from November to January and increased activity from February through to April.

On average, New Zealand experiences at least one ex-tropical cyclone passing within 550km of the country every year.

The Sea Princessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; arrival at Mount Maunganui wharf 4.45am tomorrow marks the beginning of the Bay of Plentyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cruise ship season, after shaky starts both at sea and on shore.

The ship is docking two weeks late after cancelling its ďŹ rst NZ cruise to make repairs.

Meanwhile, on-shore tourism operators have been making a lastminute deal with Tauranga City Council over parking arrangements and charges.

Tauranga Cruise Tourism Operators Association Incorporatedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s outgoing chairman Simon Beaton alerted TCC to issues in September, accusing council-funded Tourism Bay of Plenty of illegally charging tour operators 15 per cent on each job, for no service or beneďŹ t.

A hastily-arranged meeting of operators, councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s transport department, two Tourism BOP board members and TCC councillors revealed illegalities all round, says Simon.

TCCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reconstituted parking bylaw rules out commercial dealings in the Mount Ocean Sports Club carpark, Salisbury Ave and The Mall, where tour operators have gathered.

The rule prevents Tourism BOP from selling anything too, says Simon.

The solution, allowing operators to trade until the bylaw is revisited, is to operate commercial transactions in the Tourism BOP shed by port gates â&#x20AC;&#x201C; on Port of Tauranga land.

For the privilege operators pay Tourism BOP a 10 per cent fee on each transaction. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Next year I imagine we will raise the issue again,â&#x20AC;? says Simon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That meeting was good. It

started off slightly fractious but by the end there was a lot of goodwill; we all started to understand each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s positions better, which was good.â&#x20AC;?

But operators are still concerned about carparking, says Simon.

There isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going to be enough for all this year because a POT safety decision has added to numbers.

In previous seasons operators whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d pre-booked cruise clients collected them from the wharf.

The Port stopped this, so 10-20 extra vehicles will seek parking in Salisbury Ave or The Mall. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s getting worse every year because the cruise ships are getting bigger,â&#x20AC;? says Simon.

Mount Maunganui will have 84 ships visit from now to March 2015, with 16 double calls and three days with three cruise ships.

Cruise ships bring an estimated 240,000 passengers and crew, and $45-$50 million, to the region.

New pathways for youth Cover story

‘Kids who play sports aren’t seen in courts’ is a saying Sport Bay of Plenty is proving with its Pathway 16-20plus programme.

The programme is so successful it’s now oversubscribed and Sport BOP is looking for community support to be able to expand it.

Tauranga City Council contributes $5000 each year, and to expand the programme to meet increasing demands from organisations referring people with minimal or no investment – like the Ministry of Social Development, Police, Employment NZ and the YMCA – Sport BOP is asking for community investment, says manager Megan Cleverly.

The main cost is project delivery people, with a price tag of $75,000 a pop – there’s a ratio of one for every 10 trainees for the open-ended programme.

Of 124 youth referred and accepted to the programme, Megan says 24 found jobs, 29 returned to education, and 50 remain with the programme.

“The 29 who have returned to education, this was not the outcome we identified with

the programme,” says Megan. “It was more about getting kids re-engaged back in the community, but this has been the result of doing that.”

Another success is youngsters’ behaviour.

More than 80 per cent of referrals have drug use issues, some recreational, says Megan.

Megan says 42 per cent have stopped or reduced their drug intake and all have done volunteer community work.

When the programme started 18 months ago staff thought youth might turn up for an hour or two a day, but they wanted more, says Megan. They want to be there 9am3pm or 8am-5pm.

“They want to learn more. Sport BOP is packed, we’ve got no room. So we’re just working through hopefully with a facility that will help us out.

“We’re going to be developing an ongoing mentoring support programme.

Even though these young people

might go to education or work they still need our ongoing support, because there is a little bit of relapse from time to time.”

Sport BOP youth team leader Paul Pou says he’s learnt if youth have something significant to look forward to each day, and it’s based around fun activities, you usually get a great outcome.

“This could be as simple as selling their play station, helping out more around home; the secret is making them feel like they belong, they’re safe and involved in a learning, respectful environment.

“The youth are doing some great stuff and making significant changes and that’s something we at Sport BOP can be very proud of.”

The programme, which started with the name Pathway 16-plus, is now called Pathway 16-20-plus, as Sport BOP found it was taking on 16-24-years-olds.

Slapstick for development In costume Gisella Warmhoven is a “buffoon” and “whacky” in a delightfully cultured clown kind of way.

Clowning around – Gisella Warmenhoven and her alter ego.

She slips a plastic red nose over her head, pirouettes and declares she’s now a different person – “I’m a clown”.

That opens a myriad of performance possibilities for her. Now she’s inviting Tauranga to breaks its shackles and clown down with her.

Gisella’s running a workshop starting October 21 – eight two-hour sessions on the basics of being funny.

She guarantees a journey of personal discovery.

“You will learn to express emotions you didn’t know you had.

“You will enjoy it and you will make people laugh.”

Gisella, an ex-pat German, is a seriously good clown. She has her clown ticket. She trained in Italy at MimoTeatroMovimento where

people learn to express themselves; how to “grab an emotion and make it big”.

“Take dying – in reality sad and unpleasant. But a clown can make death tolerable, funny and enjoyable.”

But buy-in here in Tauranga isn’t easy.

“This is fringe theatre,” says Gisella. “And people are reluctant to try something new. If it’s not mainstream it’s difficult.”

But not Tauranga pre-school teacher Andrea Lehman. She’s putting up $240 because she’s had a life-long love of clowns. And “it’s okay for grownups to reconnect with their childhood”. “It’s cool and I am really excited about the workshop.”

She agrees with Gisella. “Tauranga’s a wee bit conservative, a wee bit grey. We should shake loose and have a good laugh. It’s therapeutic.

“It can be a lifesaver.”

Andrea intends to use her clown skills as a teaching strategy “acting out important life lessons for the kids”.

Gisella says a clown looks like anyone – except big. Big nose, big coat, big pants and an even bigger personality.

“We need all sorts of people. Shy clowns, serious clowns, not just exuberant clowns. Short people, fat people, lawyers, doctors, dentists so anyone and everyone can have a crack.”

Gisella reminds us the clown always featured on the circus poster. “If the clown was no good, the circus was no good.”

Soroptimist International of Tauranga – have you heard of it? If not, head to the group’s presentation on October 20.

Here, you’ll learn about their aims regarding a hidden secret in New Zealand – child prostitution.

Tauranga branch president Carol Butler says her group boasts 14 members, and is part of a worldwide Soroptimist movement committed to improving the lives of women and girls.

This Monday the group is hosting an evening presentation on the work of ECPAT – short for End Child Prostitution, Child Poverty and Trafficking of Children for sexual purposes.

ECPAT is the only NZ organisation with the sole focus to address sexual exploitation of children.

Carol says Kiwis will be surprised to learn this happens here.

A unique cadetship programme between the Port of Tauranga and Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is helping business students get vital workplace experience and letting the Port showcase its appeal as a progressive future employer.

The programme started in 2013 with Liam Fitzgerald being selected for the first 12-month paid cadetship. Sam Mannix is now working as this year’s cadet while he continues his studies.

The programme is open to fulltime second year New Zealand Diploma in Business students who have chosen the e-business and supply chain management paper and are interested in logistics and strategic management.

Martyn McColgan says cadetships give highly motivated future leaders an introductory pathway to the industry.

Polytechnic business studies team leader Peter Richardson says competition for cadetships is fierce and winning candidates are chosen for their work ethic.

Sam loves the opportunity to earn money and build his skills while studying.

“The Port works around my study, so some weeks I work 15-17 hours but in the holidays I can work up to 40 hours.”

Keeping bellies full A volunteer-run organisation delivering free cooked meals to families with new babies and those struggling with illness is hosting a Quiz Night this month to fund the act of support.

Bellyful’s Tauranga branch has delivered more than 900 meals to 170 families since cooking started in January 2013 – and branch coordinator Angela Heyward says the group’s profile is growing.

Angela says: “It’s a case of people having babies knowing about Bellyful – but there’s still a lot of people out there who don’t what

Bellyful does.”

Angela says Bellyful Tauranga provides the meals from volunteers holding ‘cookathons’ at Tauranga Boys’ College every four-five weeks.

The cooked meals - “covering all dietary requirements” - are frozen for delivery.

Meal request referrals can come from anybody, says Angela. “I don’t think it matters where you come from or your current situation. Getting food put on the table for dinner is always a relief,” she adds.

Bellyful aims to provide relief to parents at busy times but also offer emotional support.

“It’s not a financial assessment to whether you qualify for the meals,

it’s purely on your need for support.”

And in a way, Bellyful fills a support mechanism of sharing food formerly held by neighbours.

“Everybody is so busy now that they don’t necessarily know their neighbours - our organisation has 17 branches bringing community connection to people with young children.”

Bellyful Tauranga’s Quiz Night fundraiser is on October 17 from 7pm at Tauranga Bridge Club, Ngatai Rd, Otumoetai. Teams of four-six can enter for $80.

Remembering Armistice once again Tauranga residents will once again gather on Armistice Day next month to remember those who made sacrifices during World War 1.

18,000 New Zealanders had died during the war and tens of thousands were left seriously injured. More than 5300 soldiers are said to have been killed in 1918 alone.

Armistice Day on November 11 recognises the end of the battle, when on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11 month of 1918 – the guns fell famously silent.

The special memorial day marks a time when allies officially ended hostilities with Germany – the end of WWI. Almost 100 years since the battle, Tauranga residents and returned servicemen will traditionally honour those who fought for today’s freedom.

When the First World War finally ended, it’s believed more than

observed at 11am on November 11 in memory of those New Zealanders who died while serving their country.

On the first anniversary of Armistice, on November 11, 1919, two minutes silence is said to have been introduced as part of the main commemorative ceremony in Whitehall, London.

It’s believed King George V personally requested the entire British Empire suspend normal activities for two minutes on the hour of the cease-fire in 1918.

Family history published Omokoroa woman Maureen Bruning’s selfpublished book that delves into the history of her husband Norm’s ancestors has helped fill the gap in some family links.

Her book has even introduced children to their mother for the first time.

The author’s first book titled ‘To Seek My Fortune: Bruning Family History’ follows the history of the first New Zealand Bruning family, which arrived in Nelson Haven with a ship-load of fellow pioneers 170 years ago.

Through extensive research, Maureen follows the pastime of Matthias and Magdalena Brunings’ 10 children and their descendants, offering readers 444 pages of text, colour and black and white photos, maps, illustrations and easy-to-follow genealogical charts.

“I put this together primarily to honour my husband [Norm]’s ancestors,” says Maureen. “But also to solve the puzzle of how the NZ Bruning family is related.”

Missing links

Researching her husband’s ancestors for about 40 years, Maureen says making a family history interesting is a challenge.

“It’s been really interesting because I’ve had phone calls, letters and emails from folk who say I’ve filled in a big gap that was missing in their family links.

“In a couple of instances we’ve actually provided photographs of their family that they’ve never seen before – in two cases they’d never seen pictures of their mother.”

Maureen has learned to always record sources and talk to family friends and elderly relatives.

“They have a turn of phrase and certain words that they use, that we’ve lost,” says Maureen, who appreciates the many contributions from family, friends and help from archives, libraries – in NZ and overseas –

Testing on Route K

Pavement testing on Tauranga City’s Route K begins October 20, says Tauranga City Council.

The testing will take place at various points along the 5km, two-lane tolled expressway.

Traffic management will be in place when necessary and motorists are advised to drive with caution through road work areas.

festival hub, The Lakes Expo Pavilion, and if her creation isn’t complete in time for the festival opening it will be continued as a ‘work in progress’ which visitors can watch.

Elaine is presenting two talks at the festival Speaker Series, one outside around the work and the other incorporating images of her other work and that of environmental artists she admires.

It’ll be interesting to see how Elaine ‘sees’ the Bay of Plenty; and whether she references our recent Rena ecological event in her work.

Plotting a community garden A new community garden in Te Puke is only a spade away from sprouting, with organisers securing charity status for the group before building it at Jubilee Park.

Group chairperson Julie Gray says the garden will educate, provide produce, grow community connections and address families’ needs for vegetables.

“It’s bringing people together to work together, and there will an open door policy so everybody will be able to come in and ask for veges at any time.”

Julie says the idea grew from a vegetable patch running at Te Puke Baptist Church under Jenny Utting.

“They threw it out to the public to come on board – that’s when I got involved – and we’ve been the driving force to get this legal entity sorted and get something done about it.”

Julie says the group will lease about 1900m2 at Jubilee Park from the Western Bay of Plenty District Council, which approved the use, and they’ve met with local iwi.

“We’ve got the plot and everything – we’re just waiting for the legal entity for a charity [to be formed].

The garden will have 40 plots, set up in three stages, which will be built via sponsorships.

“Then we’ll rent the plots to community groups and give some to people who can’t afford it, to come and grow their own garden. Everything is going to be community involved.”

In time the group hopes to gift produce to Te Puke’s free community dinner and help prop up the town’s foodbank.

Volunteers will be welcome to help “pluck a weed, mow a lawn and do whatever we need done” and learn composting, recycling skills.

The garden will have a fairy land for children, sensory and edible areas, and plots will be heightaccessible to those in wheelchairs and scooters, to be user-friendly for all.

Julie says with many donations and offers of help, the project will cost about $7000 – and the group hopes to unveil its plan at the Te Puke Extravaganza on November 1 and have a big dig in day to set it up that month.

“The garden’s Facebook page collected 200 likes in the first week. It’s absolutely blown us away. Everybody wants it and wants to see it happen.”

Elicitor enhancing gold kiwifruit Trials on Italian kiwifruit orchards of plant health elicitors developed by a New Zealand company are improving both production and colouring of gold fruit, says Indigo Limited’s Nathan Balasingham, who developed the products.

“Independent orchard trials with Agrizest and Biozest in Italy have revealed some exciting developments especially with regard to gold kiwifruit colouring up and new varieties storming towards full, healthy production.

“Now is the time for NZ growers to take action to enjoy the same results,” says Nathan.

“The first two sprays of Agrizest must be applied pre-flowering.

Gold kiwifruit should be sprayed with Biozest starting when the leaves are about 4cm, until about two weeks before flowering when

your first Agrizest treatment should be applied.

“Begin your Agrizest programme now to aid even colour, high quality and good fruit size and avoid fruit losses at harvest time.”

Trials on gold varieties in Italy have shown that regardless of fruit size, Agrizest helps gold kiwifruit colour earlier and more evenly than untreated fruit, allowing earlier harvesting and fewer loses.

“We have seen this anecdotally here in NZ on G3 and in our trials in Italy on G3 and Soreli (an Italian gold variety).

“We’ll have data from Italy in January but NZ growers need to take note now and apply the first two sprays of Agrizest pre-flowering to help overcome colour and maturity issues at harvest. A further

two sprays should be applied postblossom.

“In a high producing Italian orchard even the triples in the Agrizest treated Hayward block have sized up to grade one size. The crop is more evenly sized throughout the treated block, fruit numbers are higher and there are good replacement canes for next season,” says Nathan.

“Even in a very well run, high producing orchard, returns of over 10 times the cost of the application of Agrizest are expected.”

My all-time favourite green vegetable The cost of the grocery bill seems to go up constantly, so for many reasons we have to consider how to feed the family as economically as possible.

Fresh greens, which should be a major factor in our diets, are sometimes replaced by frozen vegetables as they appear to have better value.

Nutritionally, of course, you lose somewhat as well as flavour so fresh vegetables especially green leafy vegetables are my preference.

One of my all-time favourite vegetables is gai lan, also known as Chinese broccoli or kale, or by their Cantonese name kai lan.

The nutritional content of gai lan is similar to that of kale and broccoli, although kale still wins out.

But it is the unique flavour of gai lan that wins the taste bud wars for me. The shame is most people I tell about this vegetable have never heard of it or tried it, yet they buy its cousin broccoli at the supermarket, then chop the stalk off and throw it out.

The whole part of the gai lan can be used and tastes slightly sweeter than broccoli, so most often you will find it in stir-fry or just steamed and served with oyster sauce. So seeing as I love this vegetable so much this week’s dish is gai lan tempura with dipping sauce.

It’s a quick and easy recipe as a side dish or snack – even the children will enjoy.

ENTREE

Gai lan tempura

Ingredients 1 bunch Kai lan 1 cup maize cornflour ¼-1/2 cup icy water 3 egg whites 1 Tbsp sea salt flakes Dipping sauce 1 knob grated ginger 1 part apple juice 1 part rice wine vinegar 1 part dark soya sauce Rice bran oil for cooking Method Cut up the gai lan in suitable sizes and keep the leaves whole. Wash and drain and pat dry, then dust with a

little of the cornflour.

Mix together the cornflour and some of the water and salt. Then whisk up egg whites until quite stiff – but you’re not making pavlova, just aerating your batter.

Fold in the egg whites but don’t worry if it collapses a bit, add more water so the batter is like runny cream. Dip each leaf and stem in the batter and fry off in a large pan with enough oil to shallow fry on both sides until nice and crispy. Drain on absorbent paper, then simply mix together the dipping sauce and serve – and see what you have been missing out on!

Organising committee member Anna Schroeder says the camps began last year and involved 19 CanTeen members aged 13-24.

“This year our goal is to offer 60 places, so we’d pay for 50 CanTeen members and 10 volunteers to come to the beach.”

Saturday will be split into three parts – the morning’s motorcycle rally, a gourmet gala in the afternoon, and an after-party to finish off the day.

The rally departs Waihi Beach at 8am and will follow the Mini-Coromandel loop.

This will be followed by a gourmet gala at the Waihi Beach Community Centre from 11am-3pm.

The day wraps up with an after-party at the community centre, starting 7.30pm CanTeen member Lydia Weaver attended last year’s weekend camp and says it was an amazing experience.

“The whole town came together just for a bunch of kids who have been through so much.

“This meant so much to me and I loved this experience so much,” says Lydia. The inaugural CanSurf Motorcycle Rally is on at Waihi Beach this

Country fair at school

The best of town and country will combine this afternoon at the Rangiuru School Country Fair.

The event – featuring arts, crafts and entertainment – starts at 3pm at the school before winding up at 8pm. There will be stalls, games, animals and food.

Father first before entertainer He’s a well-known Maori actor, singer and comedian – often gracing our TV screens – but first and foremost Pio Terei is a father and loving husband.

The father-of-three is sharing his parenting experiences and advice to Bay families in a one-day only Parenting Show called ‘Building Awesome Whanau’ at Bethlehem Community Hall on October 22.

It’s not a parenting seminar – Pio doesn’t like that word. He says it’s a show where he shares funny stories and some real good techniques to help families – with a Maori twist.

“Ninety per cent of the time parenting is awesome – but it’s the 10 per cent that can trip you up,” says Pio, who is a father to three boys: Jack, 23, Dalton, 20, Teina, 16.

“Sometimes we don’t talk much because we’re blokes and we just give the old eyebrow raise. But it doesn’t matter if you don’t talk some days, as long as

you’re still connected.” With help from The Parenting Place, Pio started the show about 10 years ago as a hobby which evolved into a funny and informative series of presentations for parents with tots and teens.

“I just see how much change it can make in families. I think I’ve certainly become a better husband and father from being subjected to this information and I know a lot of people aren’t.”

He’s learned to listen and learn, particularly to developing and at times emotional teenagers.

“The big one is listen – and always pick your time.

The best time to solve a problem is when it’s not so much of a problem.

“Tools like that can save relationships aye. I don’t get it right all the time, but I do most of the time.”

Moana Mediation BOP’s Ngarongo Ormsby says Pio’ is an excellent drawcard for the event.

“I wanted to have Pio there to front a friendly face to a Maori community and a community at large as well.” Pio’s show starts from 6pm.

Let’s get ‘hot’ walking the city Last year’s HOT Pink Walk saw hundreds plaster themselves in pink and walk Tauranga’s CBD.

Bay of Plenty families are encouraged to walk through the city streets dressed in their finest pink next week to raise funds and awareness for those diagnosed with breast cancer.

Organised by Tauranga Breast Cancer Service, the 2014 House of Travel (HOT) Pink Walk, on October 22, is an opportunity to celebrate breast cancer survivors and be an inspiration for people recently diagnosed.

Tauranga Breast Cancer Support service coordinator for Lea Lehndorf says the event is a gathering of support for families and an outreach to the community to encourage early action on any changes they notice to their breasts.

“Grab the kids and your husbands and come on down to Masonic Park and join in the fun. “We’re starting the event off with an exciting Zumba warm up, MC’d

The warm up will be followed by a moment of silent reflection, to remember those who have lost their lives to cancer.

“A Tauranga family will be releasing about 12 pigeons as the community stands together to remember,” says Lea. The estimated 2.8km

walk will lead participants from Masonic Park on The Strand, along Cameron Rd, down Elizabeth St and Devonport Rd back to the park.

Entry is $5, with funds going towards Tauranga Breast Cancer Support Service to support Bay residents diagnosed with breast cancer.

The event begins with Zumba at 5.30pm, before the Hot Pink Walk at 6pm.

The 45-year-old Tauranga woman received a letter from BreastScreen Aotearoa advising her she was eligible for a free breast check in May, as part of the national breast screening programme.

She’s forever grateful after the procedure revealed she had a 3.5cm tumour in her right breast.

“It was a complete surprise,” says Karen. “I’d never felt the lump, so without a doubt the mammogram was a lifesaver.”

Further tests followed and within three weeks she was booked for surgery and the tumour was removed along with lymph nodes under her arms.

While doctors have told Karen her cancer has gone, she’s started chemotherapy as an “insurance policy” to further protect her long-term chances of beating the disease.

A passionate dog lover, Karen says her dog Wesley has been her day-to-day support during her recovery.

“I couldn’t feel depressed or sad for long when he’s around. He would arrive in my room first thing in the morning and look up at me expectantly with a

smile on his face, encouraging me to get out of bed.”

If she didn’t get up straight away the dog would drop toys at her bedside, wanting to play.

“I’ve had lots of people support me over the past few months but Wesley has been there for me at home and he’s really helped me get through this.”

After her diagnosis Karen chose to receive help from Tauranga’s Breast Cancer Support Service Trust, which is the recipient of next week’s House of Travel Pink Walk.

Dog owners can purchase pink bandanas from Tauranga Vets for their pets to wear at the event.

For every bandana sold at its four clinics, and the House of Travel, $3 will go to the trust to benefit Bay women diagnosed with cancer.

Tauranga Vets owner Dr David McDonnell says many people enjoy participating in the fundraising event with their dogs.

“Selling the pink bandanas is one way the practice could support the trust.”

Clinic staff and their clients are also dressing in their finest pink and taking part in the walk on October 22.

Karen says Wesley will definitely be wearing his bandanna with pride on the day.

Painting support for breast cancer victims

Art lovers who purchase a painting at More FM’s art auction this month will be able to treasure their masterpieces even more, knowing funds paid for the work is supporting people diagnosed with breast cancer.

Participants are encouraged to mix and mingle and bid on artworks at More FM’s Art Auction for Breast Cancer Support at The Cargo Shed on October 29 from 5.30pm.

All paintings must be sold. Entry is via gold coin entry, with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga. Finger food is provided.

Changing body, changing needs As we age our bodies change and so do our calcium and vitamin D needs – two of the most important nutrients for bone health.

The kidneys have a role to play with a decrease in their efficiency to retain calcium, leading to increased calcium loss in the urine. The kidneys are also less able to convert vitamin D into its most active form.

For these reasons, recommendations for calcium and vitamin D supplementation are generally higher for seniors.

For those aged 70-plus, IOM recommended an RDA for calcium of 1200 mg, and IOF recommend vitamin D supplementation levels of about 800 to 1000 IU/day to reduce the risk of falls and fractures by about 20 per cent.

Greerton Village is bringing the art to this year’s Garden and Arts Festival with an amazing chalk art exhibition on display throughout the village.

From November 19, infamous Mount artist Jamie Harkins and his merry band of henchmen, Constanza Nightingale and David Rendu, are taking over the Greerton Village Square to create a massive 3D art piece using chalk as the medium.

Pavement chalk art has been in many places overseas with pieces created as large as an entire street and as small as one metre square.

The pieces can sometimes be used as a guerrilla marketing method by companies and are mostly interactive

Promoting family-friendly speedway Passionate speedway fan Bernie Gillon is a man on a mission.

He wants to spread the word about just how family-friendly the maligned motorsport is.

“So many people think speedway is about petrol heads in black T-shirts getting drunk and fighting, but it’s not like that at all,” says Bernie, who has been appointed Baypark’s private speedway promoter. “It hasn’t been like that for more than 30 years.”

Instead the reality of speedway is a family-friendly entertainment, says Bernie, who is emphasing this aspect by renaming Western Bay’s competition Baypark Family Speedway.

“You see it all around you – family groups make up more than 70 per cent of those who come to watch and there is a strong family tradition also on the racing side.”

Bernie knows it’s easy to say something, but the trick in lifting attendance after a long decline comes down to matching the high value family

entertainment he’s promising with what people want.

To attract more families he’s rejigged family ticket prices and is introducing an affordable buffet roast meal.

He’s also setting up a supervised children’s zone with a bouncy castle and face-painting to entertain children in a safe space if they get bored.

Bernie has a three-year contract to run the speedway after buying all track maintenance machinery and equipment from Bay Leisure and Events Venues, which with its predecessor Tauranga City Venues ran it under speedway manager Roger Bailey for the last three years.

Under Bernie’s contract he needs to meet minimum performance standards to earn the five-year right of renewal.

“Roger did a good thing last year in helping stop the drop in numbers, but it’s still going to be very tough to cover our costs on last year numbers,” says Bernie, who is aiming to increase attendance by 10-15

Flag the referendum With reference to John Key wanting NZ flag vote by 2015.

He’s suggesting a two-stage referendum.

Why put the country to such a large expense and waste of money when the Prime Minister has already made comment to the fact he does not have to agree with the final decision.

Already 52.6 per cent have responded to a no change decision with only 40.6 per cent agreeing to a change.

Does this mean with National’s majority of Members of Parliament he doesn’t have to listen to a majority poll result by the people of NZ?

I strongly suggest it is time for a binding law to be passed with urgency that a referendum decision is final and cannot be ignored.

A majority of Members of Parliament do not constitute an automatic mandate to ignore a referendum decision.

Selling our assets and farm land are just a few things that require urgent attention.

With such a majority of National members in the House, and minor parties outside of cabinet positions, they have high office expenses and salaries, but with no parliament experience.

After much justifiable pressure put on to, and subsequent dodging and darting

by TCC councillor and NZ First list MP, Clayton Mitchell finally stated categorically before election day that if he were elected to Parliament he would resign TCC. He hasn’t yet. Why didn’t the NZ First Tauranga Electoral Committee get him to commit to this promise at selection time or choose somebody else?

There were other candidates and the selection committee, after years of experience, know you can’t always get firm commitments from candidates before selection.

The Selection Committee had their chance and wilfully did nothing. Clayton is doing our beloved party irreparable harm. Moreover, selection of a sitting city ward councillor was plain stupid.

We tightened up our policy so it’s clear council expects full market valuation when transferring ownership of land to Maori. But there have been examples in the past where a troublesome property was gifted to the adjacent iwi landowner because it was the most practical thing to do.

Only elected members will make decisions under this policy. Any transfer of land under market value will require a public consultation process, with a few minor exceptions.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is undertaking a variation to the proposed Bay of Plenty Regional Policy Statement. Variation 2 is being prepared to address issues raised in appeals against that section of that statement.

The resulting natural hazards policy will guide District and City Plan rules that influence where people live and work and how they develop land and infrastructure.

Mitigating and avoiding natural hazards has always been a function of all councils under the Resource Management Act. Council staff have advised elected members that more policy and research will be required, resulting in changes to the Tauranga City Plan.

More hazards will be inputted into the City Plan, such as earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes.

Proposed Change 2 is now open for public submissions for 30 working days, with submissions closing on November 13, 2014.

The open days give people a taster of a sea kayak trip, to experience what kayaking is all about.

On the road to good health The Healthy Living Festival is returning to Tauranga this Labour Weekend.

Organiser Ruth Mansford says this festival, on October 25-26, explores all facets of a natural and spiritual existence to better improve wellbeing.

“The festival is for people from all walks of life – especially people who care about the health and wellbeing of themselves and their loved ones.”

There will be talks and exhibits from many different health practitioners, who can help ensure a smooth path on the road to good health – and free seminars all weekend.

“For those who would like to experience a selenite healing, there will be a big display of selenite crystals and information about how they can give out healing.”

Magnolia Minerals will be there with a vari-

ety of crystals, books, Feng Shui and buddhas, along with many different health products.

Natural Therapist Debbie Bryant will offer a range of treatments, including therapeutic massage, Reiki, holistic pulsing, spinal realignment and crystal healing.

“Debbie has been working in this field for 20 years and holds courses so you can learn these practises too,” says Ruth.

“For relaxation, stress relief, relieving pain or to empower you to find your own healing abilities, it could benefit you to talk to Debbie.”

Also attending is experienced clairvoyant Jacquelina Jobson who helps people to connect with their lost loved ones and gives confirmation on what is ahead for them.

“We’re very lucky to have such a lovely, spiritual woman working with us,” says Ruth.

Wayne’s also pleased to have renowned Tauranga entertainer Chris Gunn and his band The Fusilliers on board. Operation Entertain the Troops is at Classic Flyers Aviation Museum on November 28 commencing 6.30pm.

Taking a ride in ‘new school’ technology I went for a ride in a Tesla the other day. The Tesla is a new Audi-shaped all-electric car with an acceleration that will amaze.

Jesus talked about four grounds – we might talk about four cars.

We can remain deeply invested in our old way of life; we can run an unsatisfactory half-in, half-out hybrid of the old and new life, or even trundle on in an un-empowered shopping basket of a Christian walk.

Or we can fully invest in the new, fully-powered exciting, committed journey with Christ. I don’t believe any Christian should ever be bored.

God’s call is dynamic, challenging and consuming. Be a Tesla Christian.

Who is responsible for our new government?

Recently, our nation chose its three-year government again.

People will take different perspectives – some delight, others disgust, some disappointment, others couldn’t care.

While electioneering is over for the next three years, the condition and wellbeing of our nation continues to need focus and input, in order for our society and communities to be healthy.

Firstly, Paul tells the Christians at Rome that authority and governance is God’s idea, designed to protect innocent people, punish wrongdoing and therefore provide stability for the community. Therefore, pay your taxes, bring respect and show honour. In fact, “Owe nothing except Love…’

(Romans 13: 1-8).

Secondly, Paul instructs Timothy that all follow-

ers of Jesus Christ should be praying diligently for those who carry the ‘God given responsibility’ of government. The reason is peace in a nation is the best environment for the expansion and growth of God’s Kingdom on earth (1Tim 2:1-4).

There are many ‘structural’ issues that Government – both nationally and locally – is responsible to tackle.

When we have the opportunity to be involved, we should work for the betterment of all of society, not just our personal political agenda.

However, when it

comes to the heart issues – forgiveness and trust, restoration and reconciliation and the healing of broken relationships – these are the arenas where Christ followers must stand up and be active.

This is not the Government’s domain, it’s the role, privilege and responsibility of every person who carries the love of God within their heart. Love must transcend all other agendas.

Paul and all the New Testament writers would simply tell us: ‘Get over your party politics and political preferences and start praying for your nation, praying for your Government, and serving your Communities with deep love and concern’.

Searching for support The value of local lifeguard and coastguard services has never been more evident than in the last three weeks, with the extensive searches taking place on our coastline.

Foundation operations manager Margot McCool says this is a poignant reminder of our need to actively support these services.

“These are essential services for a region like ours, and it’s really important that as a community we support them, so they can continue to operate.”

This year the Acorn Foundation gifted

The Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service and Maketu Coastguard have received Acorn Foundation grants this year.

more than $430,000 to the community, including grants to Maketu Coastguard and Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service.

“We were able to give $4000 to Maketu Coastguard, allowing them to purchase a new backpack responder kit with an oxygen regulator, which can be an essential piece of equipment in a sea rescue,” says Margot.

“We were also able to support MMLS through a gift from donor Patricia Roadley, who passed away in 2011 but always admired the work of the surf club, and now provides for them annually through her Acorn endowment fund.”

Margot says supporting these worthy causes through the Acorn Foundation means these critical support organisations have an assurance of consistent financial support every year.

“Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Services and Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard both have endowment funds with Acorn now, so anyone who’d like to provide them with lasting support can choose this option.”

Donations are pooled and invested forever – meaning they’ll receive funds yearly towards operating costs, “so it’s a great way for people to help them”.

“These volunteers – from the surf clubs right along the coast to the volunteer coastguard members – provide an outstanding service to both locals and visitors.

“But they rely almost totally on donations, grants and fundraising activities to provide services,” says Margot.
