Give sharks a break Feeding frenzy of the desperate media Some of the lesser-read media outfits around town have resorted to their usual summer ploy, presumably desperate to sell papers, by having yet another shark scare campaign.

Every year we see it, shock-horror shark sighting headlines. Propaganda that works up the angst of beachgoers and anxious mums everywhere; pulling little Jane from the water and hauling little Johnnie off his boogie board.

In reality the sharks are always there, especially as

the warmer water reaches our beaches.

The real news would be if NO sharks were in the ocean. We’ll bring you that headline if it happens. It’s completely normal for sharks to be in the waters off the Bay; in fact, most of the NZ coastline. Just because there are a few more excitable visitors around, with nothing more to do all day than lie on the beach and gaze out to sea, it doesn’t mean there’s more sharks. Just more people noticing them.

Riptide of panic

Here at the Sun we refuse to be swept along in the riptide of panic merchandising. This is not Amity Island. Or Perth.

They had a spate of seven deaths in a few years, and that would be something for the media to get their teeth into.

I’ve lived on this coast all my life and have seen plenty of sharks, but can’t recall a fatality or even a significant attack. Neither can any of my boating/surfing/diving mates.

Not to say that it won’t happen, but the chances are much greater of being killed on SH2 on the way to the beach, or kicked to death by a donkey. Or nailed by a stingray in the murky shallows up the harbour. Or getting too much sun and suffering heat stroke, or developing melanoma.

So people, get this shark business into perspective. There’s no point in trying to whip folk into a frightened frenzy, because most of us have been around too long to fall for it.

I’ve seen much scarier things week: An oversized Frank Vosper lurching on the back of a bus; Russell Packer’s ideas as an ambassador for NZ; and yet another “vision” from the Mayor.

Meanwhile, in real news: Many of you are feed up with the sea lettuce situation,

that some you discovered that it’s not okay to keep women locked in your basement for a number of years. Or to keep them stashed in the boot of a car.

Bad behaviour

which has spread beyond the harbour and messing up some parts of the surf beaches.

John Todd makes some valid points: “Went for a swim at Main Beach yesterday and was horrified by the amount of sea lettuce in the shallows. It’s all well and good to remove it off the sand, but it is not a good look for swimmers. If I was a visitor and this was my experience I would be looking to vacation elsewhere next summer. It cannot be good for the Bay. Council should be looking after the assets it already has that attracts business and visitors, instead of talking up new assets like stadiums. I feel someone needs to be taken to task over this unsatisfactory situation.”

Too right, John. Between the weed and the shark hype, there’s a tourism marketing challenge!

Looking back

Things we learned from 2013: It was a steep learning curve, the last year.

Some of you found out the hard way that there are things that we aren’t allowed to do, any more.

We hope that going into 2014 you’ll all learn from the mistakes of others. In case you’ve forgotten the hard-learned lessons, here’s a recap of the main points.

For instance, it was with some dismay

Others were a tad surprised to learn that drugging your husband, and probably suffocating him while unconscious, is also frowned upon.

The concept of scoring a hottie in the council chamber, while you’re the married mayor of the nation’s biggest city, has certainly lost a lot of appeal in the last year.

Another chap found out the hard way, that it’s not acceptable to ride your bicycle around town with a sawn off shotgun in your pants.

Clearly the advice “keep it in your pants” applied to the mayor, not the armed cyclist.

Roundabout saga We’ve had some interesting exchanges with readers over Tauranga drivers’ ineptitude at roundabouts. Well, any intersections really. In fact, anywhere near the road. But let’s just deal with the roundabout indication problem. Here’s the official line: Rules for indicating on a roundabout from NZTA: “If you are turning left at the first exit, signal left as you come up to the roundabout. If you are going ‘straight’ through, don’t signal as you come up to the roundabout. Signal left as you pass the exit before the one you wish to take. If you are travelling more than halfway around a roundabout, signal right as you come up to the roundabout, then signal left as you pass the exit before the one you wish to take.”

Can’t be all that difficult, can it? Good luck, and be careful out there.

Stadium separation

The occasional All Blacks pre-season test or super rugby match is not worth the significant public investment required for a multi-million dollar stadium on downtown’s Domain Reserve, says Tauranga City Councillor Matt Cowley.

Matt disagrees with Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby’s push for a 15,000-seat stadium, which would ideally attract national and international sporting fixtures to Tauranga that ASB Baypark isn’t designed to cater for.

Matt says while high performance sport offers many benefits to society, a new stadium would not provide net economic benefit.

“The subsidies required to attract a pre-season All Black test to Tauranga against a minor nation is unlikely to generate new money coming into the city.

It would mostly be local people spending money that they would have otherwise spent on another form of local entertainment.”

Matt says his research into international studies on the topic shows stadiums rarely bring their promised economic benefits.

“Instead, they create debt the city can’t pay back before more funding is required for refurbishment.”

Stuart says the stadium is not just about enticing the occasional international rugby match – rather it is about establishing a premier facility to host events

regionally, nationally and internationally. “Events are a very low hanging fruit for economic growth development; it brings money into the city. And for events, you actually need facilities.

“We don’t have a purpose-built premier ground in Tauranga. We’re the sixth largest city in New Zealand and we miss out on a lot.”

Stuart says he’s currently only looking to discuss the idea publicly and explore available options.

“What I’m looking for is how it can link in with the other major projects under consideration [for the CBD].” These include plans for a university, an international hotel and conference facility.

“We need to work out how they all link together as a package. Until you’ve examined the options, you won’t know.”

Matt believes there are better ways to achieve economic growth and better sporting outcomes than an “under-utilised stadium”.

He says funding should be left for projects that will raise the average incomes of Tauranga households and enhance community pride.

“Our climate and location makes us an ideal host for national sport centres of excellence.” Our secondary schools dominate the national volleyball scene.

We are also strong in rugby sevens, hockey and aquatic sports. They each provide local athletes with pathways to the Olympics; and we can attract international squads here to train during their off-season.”

Maungatapu fatal: driver charged

The driver of a car involved in the crash on Maungatapu Bridge that claimed the life of electrician Greg Woledge is facing charges.

The 45-year-old driver of a Mitsubishi that collided with the AMP’T Electrical van on August 12 is charged with careless driving causing death and injury, falsifying his log book, possession of cannabis for supply and possession of cannabis seeds and utensils.

He was employed as a bus driver at the time of the crash and is due to appear in Tauranga District Court on February 14.

Near-drowning in Pilot Bay

A 67-year-old Hamilton man was pulled unconscious from the water at Pilot Bay on Monday.

The man, who had been snorkelling, was seen floating face down about 50metres from shore shortly after 1pm by two men rowing out to a moored launch.

He was taken to shore and given CPR before being transported to Tauranga Hospital where on Thursday he remained in a critical condition.

Tauranga boy beaten in Napier

A Tauranga 12-year-old holidaying in Napier has been beaten in what police are calling a “savage and prolonged” attack.

The boy was walking along the Taradale cycleway in Napier with two friends when he called out to a man riding a bicycle, about 2.40pm on Wednesday.

Police say the man, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, took exception to the boy’s remark.

They say he allegedly grabbed the boy by his throat, punched him and put him in a headlock causing him to fall down a bank.

The alleged attacker is the accused of chasing the boy down the bank and kicking him and putting him in a second headlock before letting him go and riding off.

Skilful Sevens on show Provincial pride and passion returns to Bay of Plenty’s ‘home of Sevens’ this weekend with 26 teams vying for national honours at the Bayleys National Sevens in Rotorua.

Hosted by Queenstown for the last 10 years, the iconic summer event takes centre stage at the Rotorua International Stadium after Rotorua was awarded hosting rights for two years by the New Zealand Rugby Union in 2012.

Founded in 1975, the National Sevens was last hosted in Rotorua in 1997 and 1998.

And one team keen to put a string of disappointing appearances behind them is the Bay of Plenty Men’s side.

This season, the side is yet to progress through to the business end of both the Northern Region tournament and Bay Engineers Supplies Sevens tournament – a pattern coach Rodney Gibbs is keen to change.

“Our preparation hasn’t been ideal, we certainly haven’t produced many results to date so it’s a big week ahead, but you never know what can be done in a

week of sport,” says Rodney.

In the men’s side of the draw 16 teams will again compete while the women’s competition is being expanded to 10 teams – up from six last year.

The Bay of Plenty Women’s side will also be in action throughout the two days.

The Bay men face a tough ask on opening day, drawn against Tasman and Counties Manukau and this season’s surprise package of Northland.

“Northland are a very good side and we drew with them last week [at the Bay Sevens].

ing that game,” says Rodney.

“We play Counties at the end of the day so it’s who can prepare the best for that game right.”

Looking back on the season so far, Rodney struggles to explain why the side is failing to produce the winning spark seen with many Bay sides in previous years – but states inexperience as a factor.

“We are just a quite young in terms of actual Sevens experience.”

“We have a lot of boys coming straight from club rugby; and I guess we lack a bit of decision making around the field which is letting us down.”

New Rena exclusion zones announced The announcement this week of changes to the Rena exclusion zone around the Astrolabe Reef is a sign Resolve Salvage and Fire is about to enter the lifting phase of the current salvage contract.

Fisher stabbed by stingray

A Maketu fisherman was stabbed in the thigh with a stingray barb while out fishing off the coast this week.

The 40-year-old was fishing near Plate Island on Tuesday with another local man when they began hauling in a net containing a stingray.

The stingray let out its barb piercing the man’s right thigh. He was taken from the jetty at Kaituna Cut to Tauranga Hospital and later discharged.

Cycle helmet blitz announced

Mount Maunganui’s casual holiday approach to cycle helmet laws has ended with police ramping up efforts in a month long cycle helmet campaign to ensure complete cycle compliance.

Police will be enforcing the rule and handing out $55 tickets to cyclists not wearing helmets.

Shoppers smash Christmas records

“Spectacular” is the word used to describe December spending in Tauranga, with many retailers experiencing their best Christmas ever in terms of foot traffic and turnover.

Paymark figures released today show a strong finish to the year with spending up 7.5 per cent in December 2013, compared to the previous year.

Spending in the Bay of Plenty increased from $313.2million in December 2012 to $336.7million in December 2013.

Western Bay of Plenty harbourmaster Jennifer Roberts announced 500 metre exclusion zones around the two barges that will be involved in the operation to cut and lift the sunken container ship’s four storey accommodation block from 40-50 metre deep water on the north side of the reef.

On October 5, 2011 the Rena cargo ship grounded on Astrolabe Reef, about 25km off the coast of Tauranga, causing one of the country’s biggest environmental disasters.

The ship’s ‘house’ will be cut and lifted in two 350 tonne sections by the crane barge RMG500 and transferred to the deck barge RMG1000, which will be anchored near Motiti Island.

In recent months the specialist salvage dive team has been burning rigging holes and clearing internal pathways to enable about 2000 metres of large industrial three inch wire chains to effectively saw the house into two sections.

Once cut, the two sections will be lifted onto the deck barge to be dismantled for scrap and, where possible, recycling.

The temporary moving exclusion zone has been set around the barge transporting sections of the dismantled Rena accommodation block to the Port of Tauranga, says Jennifer.

“The RMG1000 will be secured in place by four or more anchors, each marked with a large orange/ yellow buoy and lit at night with a yellow flashing light.

“To ensure the safety of the divers and other workers involved in this operation, no unauthorised vessel may enter the temporary Moving Exclusion Zone; the first of which extends out 500 metres from the barge RMG500 during the transit from Astrolabe Reef towards Motiti Island while transporting pieces of the Rena accommodation block.”

Testing the currents Cover Story Tauranga Harbour is set to ripple with competition this weekend as swimmers compete in two iconic events on the annual Tauranga open water calendar.

Starting tomorrow swimmers will take the plunge in the Murray Dingle Memorial Bridge to Bridge before the Round The Mount swim on Sunday.

The first sees swimmers don their wetsuits and take to the water at The Strand at 2.15pm for a fast and furious 1500m or 600m tide-assisted swim with many clocking Olympic standard times.

On Sunday swimmers will complete the 4km swim around Mount Maunganui starting in Pilot Bay and finishing at

Mount Main Beach at 8am – the 31st year of the event.

One swimmer keen to stamp his mark again is defending bridge to bridge champion Perry Farrell.

The 18-year-old, one of 120 competitors in 2013, clocked a winning time of 15 minutes and is ready to lead from the front again despite battling a dose of sickness this week.

A surf lifesaver, come open water swimmer, Perry is pleased with his preparation leading up to the pair of races after taking out the Shorebreak Summer Series 1500m swims for the second consecutive year running.

“It’s going really well and there has been really good competition with Nathan Capp [New Zealand 1500m record holder] coming one week and then Brady Ashby and Ben Gillies another week,” says Perry.

Under a new coach at Mount

Maunganui Swimming Club, Perry is clocking up the kilometres with more long distance training – helping aid both the open water swimming and his passion of surf lifesaving.

Asked which race he holds any preferences towards, his heart lies with the shorter distances.

“They are both really different races, the bridge to bridge is more of a sprint which I find I like more while the round the mount is more of a mental challenge.”

But his main competition to claiming double titles lies in defending Round the Mount champion and Greerton swimmer Nathan Capp.

The 21-year-old is fresh from taking five seconds off the NZ 1500m record in the pool with a time of 15:22.83.

It is a far cry from the sundrenched Bay of Plenty, but there is no place Ben Richards would rather be this February than the chilly depths of the Sub-Antarctic.

The Tauranga Boys’ College student is one of the 12 young leaders, who have been selected as part of the Sir Peter Blake Trust initiative to journey to the Auckland Islands and take an eye-opening look at a new world-leading climate change research station.

The leaders, aged 16 to 18 years old, will join a group of environmental scientists on the expedition to the SubAntarctic region, which is identified by scientists as critical for studying the effects of climate change.

Ben, 17, became aware of the expedition while attending last year’s environmental youth leader’s forum in Christchurch, deciding to apply through a written essay and video of himself.

“I felt really pleased and very excited to go and I’m happy they chose me.

The environment is a big passion of mine and has been since I was young.”

But Ben will not be the first of his family to make a mark on the SubAntarctic, with his older brother and father being previous visitors – though this is not dampening his spirits.

Sir Peter Blake Trust programme director Hannah Prior says the inaugural group of students have been picked due to their natural leadership abilities and prior environmental initiatives – both in their schools and communities.

The establishment of a research station will provide new access for researchers implementing The Deep South National Science Challenge – one of the 10 national science challenges being launched by the Government during the next two years.

The challenge is funded to help safeguard NZ’s economic and environmental future from the changing influence Antarctica and the SubAntarctic will have on the country’s climate and ocean.

A crew of 22, including representatives from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research and the Department of Conservation, will journey to the Auckland Islands aboard the Royal New Zealand Navy’s HMNZS Wellington, spending about eight days at sea, and up to five days on islands. It is expected they’ll depart from Auckland on February 10, returning to Bluff by February 23, 2014.

Track closure

Western Bay of Plenty District Council is advising walkers part of track near Kaiate Stream is now permanently closed due to erosion.

The council’s website advises that a minor section of the track has been closed for good.

The small closed section runs beside the Kaiate Stream.

The main track through the Kaiate Falls is still open.

Te Puke promotion

Te Puke is receiving a promotional boost featuring in New Zealand travel magazine ‘Arrival’ this month.

The article titled ‘New Zealand’s Goodness Capital’ features on page 52 of the quarterly magazine, which targets more than 2.6million annual travellers to New Zealand.

It says Te Puke is the home of internationally acclaimed superfoods kiwifruit, manuka honey and dairy, and promotes places in the area people can visit to learn more about them.

A little bit of art You could say Graeme Summerville’s hobby at times takes over his life.

But it would be more accurate to say it takes over his house.

The Waihi Rd resident collects pieces of art, including mirrors and sculptures, for pleasure – a practice he began about 12 months ago. Now, more than 600 items fill the walls and rooms of Graeme’s home.

“My garage is full; they’re under my bed, next to my bed, in the spare bedroom upstairs, hanging on the walls, in the lounge and the laundry.” Paying about $50 for any given piece, Graeme sources

most of his art from auctions and hospice shops. He’s not fussy, buying anything and everything in his price range.

“I’ve become known as the guy who buys anything hanging on the walls.”

Graeme, who moved from Australia four years ago, admits he knew nothing about art when he began, and says there is no real reason behind the collection other than the desire for a new hobby.

“Twelve months ago, I didn’t know the different between water, oil and acrylics.”

Each time Graeme buys an item; he takes a photograph of it and adds it to his now-bursting albums. And despite the numer-

ous artists, past and present, in the collection, his favourite piece is a Tauranga secondary school student’s painting of birds – purchased from a school’s auction recently.

“It stood out because of the young 13-14-year-old’s ability to draw so realistically birds. It’s just absolutely brilliant.”

He’s donated some items to charities, and aims to eventually sell his collection – something his family would be happy to see, he says. “Everybody is telling me to stop. People say to me, don’t you leave this all to us in your will.”

Top year for ARRC Men’s travel woes ARRC Wildlife Centre staff are welcoming in the New Year on the back of a successful 2013.

Since the Spay the Stray cat campaign began in September 2012, 488 stray cats and kittens have been removed from Tauranga’s streets. Plus, 28 colonies have been contained, 278 cats have been rehomed and 334 cats have been de-sexed.

Coordinator Liza Schneider says for the duration of the campaign no cats have been unnecessarily euthanased.

“If they have been tame and healthy enough to find homes for, they have been or are in the process of being re-homed.”

The campaign still aims to attend to about 350 stray and un-owned cats.

Tauranga men get more irate over travel delays during the holiday period than those in other regions, a Southern Cross Travel Insurance survey suggests.

The survey asked 2000 Kiwis what most exasperated them when they travel, and found 53 per cent of Tauranga males rated delays in travel as their number one issue.

A total of 39 per cent of respondents nationwide listed the same top issue.

Second on the list is unsatisfactory accommodation, which received 26 per cent of votes. Other tourists came in third at nine per cent.

Tauranga females weren’t as concerned about travel, but 50 per cent of Dunedin women were.

An island by many names

A horse short of a paddock Reaching just 58cm – what Tonto lacks in height, he makes up for in attitude.

In celebration of summer, The Weekend Sun is profiling some of the Bay’s little islands. This week reporter Andrew Campbell looks at Moturiki Island.

The rocky, sometimes tidal, island separating Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach from the Ocean Beach goes by many names – Moturiki, Leisure Island, The Blowhole.

Whatever name you choose, the island’s a popular visiting spot at all times of the year, from summer scrambles to winter expeditions, people love to watch the blowhole pumping in a big onshore swell.

Surfers use the blowhole to get past the break, when the right hander is pumping. The island is also popular fishing spot.

Moturiki Datum is also known far and wide as the official mean sea level.

pa, Te Tukanga and Ahikakore; one on the eastern side of the island, the other on the west.

The island was also further modified in the 19th and early 20th centuries when the corner nearest the beach was quarried for ballast for the East Coast Main Trunk Railway.

The old quarry site was again modified in the late 1960s, providing the location for Marineland Mount Maunganui, a marine aquarium and captive dolphin pool.

After the departure of the dolphins and seals, the business was renamed Leisure Island and the pools were stocked with water toys.

The business continued for some years as a summer fun park before the dilapidated buildings, waterslide and pools were demolished and removed. To this day, the occasional seal and blue penguin still come ashore there, perhaps visiting the former aquarium site.

Streaking across a Welcome Bay field at full speed, the eight-year-old dwarfed miniature horse pales in comparison to his full-sized horse neighbour.

Tonto is one of a few dwarfed miniatures in New Zealand, and was purchased by owner Rosemary Sinclair two years ago following a life in the circus.

“The circus owner couldn’t look after them any more.

He brought them down to the Historic Village and I had a shop there. I decided I would take them on, because I could see Tonto wasn’t in good condition.

“It’s been so worth it, he used to be grumpy as hell and try and hide, I think because of how he was treated, and now he’s so much better. But I’ve been hand-feeding him for two years to get him like that.”

Tonto currently resides with fellow miniature Betty, who reaches a more standard 94cm, in a field in Welcome Bay. But Rosemary is searching for a new place for the pair, as she has to leave her current residence. Hoping she won’t be separated from the horses, she’s pleading with anyone who knows of an available rental with grazing space to contact her.

I have to move, and I just want somewhere with grazing so they’re just over the fence from me. Life’s a lot easier when I have that, so I want a farm cottage on the outskirts of Tauranga preferably.”

Get your teddy ready for a picnic

Children and teddy bears – get ready for a summertime picnic at Katikati Heritage Museum this weekend.

Katikati Heritage Museum manager Paula Gaelic says the museum’s lawn is ready to be bombarded by bears and their owners – young and old – this Sunday for the teddy bear’s picnic.

“They need to bring a blanket, if they wish, and some teddy bears of course and they can come and have a picnic lunch;

they can also buy at the cafe or bring their own food,” says Paula.

“They can also have a look and make the most of the Olden Day Toys and Model Railway exhibition that’s on and we’ll have the Singing Carol Boy from Auckland.”

Paula says Kite Man John Russell will also be at the museum this weekend offering to help young and old to learn to fly kites – wind permitting.

Determined George George Moir’s job saw him assist people with disabilities to live meaningful lives for 17 years, then a diagnoses he never saw coming flipped everything upside down.

Three years ago, the Papamoa resident began experience excruciating pain in his legs and went to the doctor for help.

He was diagnosed with vascular disease – a condition which ultimately resulted in the amputation of both of his legs.

For a man who served in the New Zealand Army for 19 years, the sudden lack of autonomy and freedom shook him.

“Honestly, it’s been so long, and such an on-going battle I wasn’t prepared for; and it was huge getting through that.

“I was really lucky I have great family and friends.

My wife Michelle was my rock.”

Working as a support worker and team leader at SILC – a Tauranga organisation supporting people with disabilities – George thought he knew what he

was in for. “I thought I was prepared, I thought I knew heaps – but I so didn’t. Once you go through it, it’s incredibly humbling and different – and it makes you realise how fragile life is.

“But you have to be positive. I do as much as I can for myself.”

George uses a power chair – a device he shares a love/hate relationship with. He is determined to do as much as possible, still mowing his own lawns and is now back working 20 hours a fortnight at SILC. His main aim is to get back onto his legs full time.

“Honestly, I look at that chair and think I hate that chair, and it motivates me.”

George credits his ability to move forward to his wife Michelle, and the late Peter James – founder of SILC and good friend.

“He was incredible. He taught me you have to go through the grief process – I didn’t realise I had to grieve for my legs, so I went through the anger, the frustration, the pain and the loss.

“Now I look to other people for inspiration and I hope people can look at me in my chair, with the mower, and they get the same inspiration.”

Tauranga Coastguard has recently upgraded equipment in the radio room, and introduced a tailored training programme. All trainees receive one-on-one

training, and a progressive exposure to work on the radio, until they feel comfortable to ‘go it alone’.

The service runs with about 30 radio operators, made up of people from all walks of life.

Between these volunteers and with some assistance from colleagues in Auckland overnight, Tauranga Coastguard maintains a 24/7 radio service, to compliment the 24-hour service offered on the international distress channel 16.

Model train show’s a ‘toot’

It’s full steam ahead at the 22nd annual Model Train Show this weekend, as eye-catching and interactive exhibits go on display in Mount Maunganui.

Run by the Tauranga Model Train Show, the event is aimed to be a fun and educational attraction for train enthusiasts of all ages. It features local and visiting displays and hands-on activities for children.

Club publicist Peter Dibble says local exhibits to look out for include a static display of LNER steam locomotives and trains from the 1900-1960 eras, a Thomas the Tank Engine display, an English layout depicting a small town station, and a children’s drive-a-train for hands-on fun.

Visiting exhibits offer some out-of-town fun, with a layout of scenic Australian mountains with working features, the Matamata Model Railway Club’s updated English town and country display, a ride-on

train for children, and more.

There are two trade stands operating and the annual train set raffle. Peter is hoping to see about 5000 people visit the show during the weekend.

The show is on today, and throughout the weekend at Mount Maunganui College from 10am-4pm daily. Tickets are $15 for family, $6 for adults, and $3 for children.

Squashing the competition While many youngsters are playing in the sand these holidays, 12-year-old Glenn Templeton has been slogging it out on the squash court in preparation for his first overseas challenge.

Glenn, from Katikati, has been selected in the New Zealand junior squash team to play in the transTasman Junior Test Series and the Junior Oceania Championships on Australia’s Gold Coast from January 15-21.

The Katikati Squash Club member says he hasn’t quite brought his sleeping bag to the club, but has been spending many hours there training and challenging members for practice.

Glenn Templeton is busy thrashing his squash racket this summer.

“I play quite a lot of people in my grade here – and they are quite good competition – especially Alex Bachellier and Braden Brewer,” says Glenn, who got involved in the sport with his mother Valerie, with father Lyndon being the club’s president.

“I’m pretty excited because I’ve never been out of the country

before. I’m not really nervous about playing though.”

Both championships will be played in age groups – with Glenn being one of two in the Under 13 boys division of the national team, alongside Kobe Fleming of Mana.

Glenn, the club’s Most Improved Junior cup-holder, is in national training squads, travels to Cambridge for elite coaching; and works on technique with coach Robbie Wyatt.

The trans-Tasman Junior test Series, to be held at Gold Coast’s Palm Beach Squash Centre, is being revived in 2014 after an eight-year absence.

The following Oceania challenge receives World Squash Federation recognition, meaning players can gain world ranking points for their efforts.

Living the ‘dream life’ A Mount Maunganui man is escaping social and work pressures of everyday life in New Zealand by travelling the world and working through his laptop.

Nathan Buchan’s unique business – Lifestyle-Prenuer – means he can leave behind the pressures of holding a certain social persona and working long-hours to pay for a “comfortable” life.

Through his business, the 23-year-old travels the world making his own dosh by showing others how to make money online through blogging.

“The hardest thing for me to leave behind was the ego [and] getting over what other people thought about me,” says Nathan.

“I had dreams I wanted to fulfil; and once I let go of what other people thought about me and the image I gave out to the world, is when I truly broke through into a world of my own where I am no better than anyone and we are all equal in my eyes.”

Nathan can work from anywhere in the world.

Nathan created Lifestyle-Preneur for “fun, happiness and freedom” and to show people what they can achieve.

“I realise I only have one life,” says Nathan. “And a life not controlled by anyone else and the freedom to do what I want has opened up doors to experiences I never would have imagined previously.”

Dropping out of school at age 15, Nathan started a plumbing apprenticeship and also bought into a property, which he began renovating to be available for rent.

Feeling overwhelmed, Nathan’s body shut down from emotional and physical stress working 16-hour days – sometimes more.

He fell ill and was bedridden for a few weeks on harsh medication.

Wanting a change in lifestyle, and taking a turn for the better, Nathan quit his fouryear plumbing job and took the “trip of his dreams” to Bali.

He shared his experiences online and started to build a following of people interested in his travels. In six months, Nathan

travelled to Bali, sailed around the Fijian islands, visited his mother in Australia and returned home for the summer.

He will be returning for a Bay of Plenty summer, after living in Vietnam for a little more than a month. Where he travels next is a mystery, says Nathan.

“I love to go with the flow and see where life takes me.

“It’s not always easy, especially finding internet connection, but it’s worth it,” says Nathan.

Buried treasure hunt

Detox or not to detox?

That is the question Having survived the festive season’s blowout I am happy to be at the other side and grateful we do not live in the times of our ancestors, when there were 12 days of feasting and drinking.

That kind of calorie blowout would require a good few months’ hard work to regain the waist line and health.

Often these excesses were treated by either bloodletting or fasting, neither of which are a healthy option.

But are they any less harmful than many of the detox programmes promoted these days?

Suddenly my post box is full of advertising blurbs about diets and detox programmes.

I tend to read these to see if there is any chance of truth.

A few have possibilities but most have ridiculous claims.

Such as losing a kilo a day by taking their capsules whiles still eating your favourite meals or their, very expensive, meal substitutes that will detox your body while you lose weight on a minimal diet.

Our bodies are designed to remove toxins through the liver and immune system and it makes no sense to limit the necessary supportive nutrients that allow these natural functions.

It also doesn’t make sense to flood the body with more chemicals and processed products to do the job that whole foods can do more naturally, less harmfully and at a fraction of the price.

Eliminating all processed foods, high fat foods and alcohol, while increasing water, fruit, vegetables, wholegrains and lean proteins in the correct volumes can be the best detox you can give yourself.

Guidelines for healthy exercise each week With a new year comes the chance for a new exercise regime.

The Ministry of Health’s New Zealand Physical Activity Guidelines offer a guide as to how much exercise we should be completing weekly as we age.

Adults: • Should be active every day in as many ways as possible.

• Put together at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most if not all days of the week.

• If possible, add some vigorous exercise for extra health benefit and fitness.

Age five –18 years: • Each day, do 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity.

• Be active in as many ways as possible.

• Be active with friends and family, at home, school and in their communities.

• Spend less than two hours a day (out of school hours) in front of the television, computers, and game consoles.

Older people: The following should be adjusted for each older

person according to their individual needs and abilities: • Be as physically active as possible and limit sedentary behaviour.

• Consult an appropriate health practitioner before starting or increasing physical activity.

• Start off slowly and build up to the recommended daily physical activity levels.

• Aim to do aerobic activity on five days per week for at least 30 minutes if the activity is of moderate intensity or for 15 minutes if it is of vigorous intensity.

• Aim to do three sessions of flexibility and balance activities, and two sessions of musclestrengthening activities per week.

Examine what you’re eating If you’re looking to lose weight and better your inner health in 2014, Eat for Keeps author Leigh Elder suggests keeping your carb intake under control.

He says the perfect tool for working out the glucose loads of common food and drink is the Glycaemic Load, or glucose points for simplicity.

As a guide, Leigh says people need to stay under 20 points for main meals and 10 points for snacks about 80 points per day. Physical activity levels, size and other factors will effect this.

Nonetheless, it will act as a really good guide.

Here are some average glucose point amounts for common foods and drinks (average serving sizes) at breakfast, lunch and snack time. Protein and fat have zero glucose points. It is only carbohydrate that makes glucose.

Examples below allow for average serving sizes and numbers are approximations to serve as a guide.

Lunch:

Same for bread as above, with zero points for salad, vegetables, ham, other meats, avocado and canned fish. Sushi: Two rolls is 18 gps, six rolls is 54 gps.

Muffin, scone, slice and other baked goods is 25- 45 gps.

An average a 150g muffin is about 45 gps. Subway with all the trimmings is about 30 gps.

Snacks:

A ripe banana is about 12 gps, while most temperate fruits such as apples, pears and citrus are three to five gps.

Nut and seeds make up zero glucose points.

Fruit juice, fizzy drinks and energy drinks are between 15-20 gps for a small bottle.

Milkshakes and smoothies with fruit, yoghurt and milk are three to eight gps.

Breakfast:

An average bowl of say cornflakes, Coco Pops or Ricies will have 25 gps.

Count milk as zero and add three gps for yoghurt.

Porridge with a teaspoon of manuka honey is about nine gps.

Heavier cereals, like Weetbix, will be somewhere in between 16-20 gps. Add 11 gps for each slice of white toast and six gps for a dense multigrain. Bacon and eggs is zero gps, while baked beans are five gps.

Gentle pain relief in small amount of time It is not physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy or massage. The Morgan Clinic really is the gentle art of fast pain relief and generally requires only two or three visits.

More than 8500 patients have now been treated at The Morgan Clinic since it opened in the Bay of Plenty 16 years ago. The Morgan Clinic uses manipulative therapy, which is the gentle realignment of the vertebrae by the use of minimal fingertip pressure of the therapist, accompanied by the voluntary muscular movements of the patients as directed by the therapist.

Owner Raylene Smalley – daughter of founder late Ray Morgan – says she treats the cause, not the condition. “Because the treatment is noninvasive and non-traumatic, it generally requires only two or three visits for fast relief,” says Raylene. “Neck and back pain are common reasons why patients seek help, but there are many other ailments and injuries relating to those areas which can be treated effectively. These include migraines, headaches, sinusitis, facial palsy, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, OOS (RSI), sciatic pain, pain in the groin, knees and ankles; and of course sports injuries.”

The technique was developed in 1958 by the late Ray Morgan and the late Harley Blows in Hamilton. Harley Blows moved to Auckland in the mid-1960s and opened clinics there. The technique rapidly gained widespread acknowledgement as the most gentle and fastest relief of pain associated with the neck and back. “They can all be treated in this manner, as treatment does not force the tissue.

Breakdance battle at Mount A breakdancing event aimed at being one of the biggest of its kind in New Zealand will take over Mount Drury this weekend.

Crews from across Australasia are registered to compete in Step Correct, battling for pride and prizes from 1pm6pm on Saturday.

Co-organisers Chris Critter-Watene and Faybs Herewini say the event’s format is a country-first consisting of three-on-three ‘BBoy’ and ‘BGirl’ battles.

“It is being named an international frenzy of talented individuals coming together to bring an awesome extravaganza of spectacular, crazy moves – and some extreme battling is about to go down.”

During the day, sponsors Ngai Te Rangi Iwi will be promoting suicide prevention and staffing the event.

Making a racket A father and son’s sacrifice of leaving their family behind while they travel the world playing tennis is paying off, with Tauranga-born Andrew Kipa’s nine-year-old son winning a national title after just three years in the game.

Andrew introduced his son Jade Aperahama Te Aika Kipa to tennis about three years ago, and the young player has already picked up a national win in his age group at the Maori Tennis Nationals in Hamilton last month.

Gaining experience overseas, Jade has also enjoyed success in tournaments in Poland and Czech Republic.

“I have a background in tennis, so

we thought we’d try it out with him,” says Andrew. “He showed a lot of talent early on.” The pair lives in Thailand where Andrew trains his son, while his wife and daughter live in Korea where she teaches English.

Andrew and Jade are visiting New Zealand for three months playing tennis tournaments throughout the country and will travel to Christchurch to compete in a second national tournament on January 10-14.

“It’s a sacrifice,” says Andrew. “But we also have a lot of opportunities to see the family. We’re only ever away for about three months each time.”

Home-schooled in Thailand, Jade uses his spare time to train with his dad which includes daily 45-minute yoga sessions and 100 push-ups and sit-ups. With a 10-year goal to play in the oldest and most famous tennis tournament in the world – Wimbledon – Jade hopes to one day become a professional tennis player.

“He’s very motivated, but he always likes to improve. He pushes himself, even in schooling,” says Andrew. “He just gets it done.”

Returning to work or study?

The New Year is a great time to be thinking about new beginnings and returning to work or study.

Many people who make this decision are eligible for assistance through Work and Income to help cover the cost of childcare or after-school care.

The Childcare Subsidy is available to children attending an approved early childhood programme.

Depending on your income, families could be eligible for assistance of nine hours childcare a week if you are not working, studying or training, and up to 50 hours a week if you are working, studying or on an approved training course.

The OSCAR (Out of School Care and Recreation) Subsidy is for children aged five to 13.

It helps towards the cost of before-school and after-school care for up to 20 hours per week, and school holiday programmes for up to 50 hours per week.

Young parents, aged 16 to 18, may be eligible for a Guaranteed Childcare Assistance Payment if they are in education or training for work-based learning.

The Government also funds up to 20 hours a week of free Early Childhood Education for children aged three to four attending ECE centres, which is not income dependent.

Families who are within the income threshold may also be eligible for up to 30 hours of subsidised care above the 20 free ECE hours.

With all these options available, there is plenty of opportunity to get back to work or study.

Forgotten produce makes gourmet treat During the holidays the fridge has been rather full, with every nook and cranny jammed with jars of pickles and packets of this and that.

As most of our visitors are now gone it’s time to examine the leftover contents and see what needs chucking out – or recreating into

something gourmet to take to a barbecue.

Sometimes when cleaning out the fridge you come across forgotten produce and at the back, paper bags full of slightly wrinkled button mushrooms.

The ‘eureka’ light bulb goes off as I extract a tub

of hummus from the fridge and check the expiry date – which is all good.

I decide to pickle the mushrooms in balsamic brine, then fill them with hummus and take chilled to the barbecue as a gourmet treat.

Mushrooms

Pickled balsamic mushrooms filled with hummus Ingredients 300-500g button mushrooms 3/4cup brown sugar 1/2cup cider vinegar 1/4cup balsamic vinegar 2 cloves garlic 100g (approximately) hummus 1 Tbsp creamed cheese 1 Tbsp chopped parsley Method In a stainless pot bring mushrooms, garlic, sugar, and vinegars to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Cool the mushrooms in the liquid.

Remove once cool and remove any stalks from mushrooms.

Some readymade hummus have a lot of added liquid, so add in the cream cheese to thicken the hummus, then pipe into the mushroom cups and sprinkle with parsley.

Chill in the fridge for several hours, this will set the mushrooms.

The remaining liquid in the pot can be reduced further on the stove top until thick and then poured over as a glaze.

The summer silly season has been particularly crazy, with the dogs of the residence being expected to dress up and play silly buggers for all manner of events – and to entertain all sorts of characters.

It started with the role of Christmas fairy, and while I didn’t mind the tinsel and the tutu, I drew the line when someone mentioned the positioning of the pole to stick me up the Christmas tree.

Then there was a selection of swimwear, some of it doggy attire in the form of useful things, such as canine lifejackets, but it all got a bit freaky when some wag decided to set me up with DOGCAM harness.

One swift exit under the gate soon wiped out any idea of that plan working.

Could your pet be diabetic?

Diabetes in dogs and cats is common and under-diagnosed, similar to in people.

Just as in humans, diabetes occurs when an animal cannot produce enough insulin in its pancreas, or is no longer responding to insulin properly, and their blood sugar rises.

The opposite can also occur, when a pancreatic tumour produces far too much insulin and the blood sugar level drops dangerously low, but this is a much rarer condition in pets.

Insulin is the hormone that helps convert sugar in the bloodstream into energy.

Diabetes in dogs and cats causes an increase in urination and thirst, an increase in appetite combined with weight loss, and some can become lethargic and unwell.

A simple blood test can measure blood sugar levels and diagnose the disease, but further urine and blood tests are required to assess for complications.

Diabetes is more common in certain breeds, pets above six years old, and overweight animals.

The good news is most cats and dogs respond very well to treatment.

They do require daily injections of insulin, but this is usually much easier than giving tablets, once you get the hang of it.

We also have special diets to help stabilise blood sugars and manage the disease more effectively.

Dogs and cats tend to escape some of the more serious complications that we see in human diabetics.

There are some risks, such as urinary tract infections, pancreatitis and cataracts, but in most situations, diabetic pets can lead a normal, happy life.

Noisy birds making havoc ARRC Wildlife Trust staff are asking people to be patient with noisy baby birds during summer.

Director Dr Liza Schneider says they have recently had a couple of nests of kingfisher babies brought in due to the noise they make.

“They are very beautiful as adults but incredibly ugly babies and they are very, very noisy with a raucous screech.”

Liza says some people do not tolerate having a nest nearby and either destroy it or bring the babies into ARRC for care.

“At four weeks of age, baby kingfishers are ready to leave the nest and so leaving their Mum and Dad to care for them, until this time, is very important.”

She asks people to be patient and says the babies will normally only make noise during the day.

If birds are orphaned or injured, native species may only be cared for by people who have a permit from DOC, so they should be brought in to ARRC, says Liza.

Summer a scorcher for pets too Animals are feeling the effects of the summer heat and a Tauranga animal welfare inspector is warning pet owners to take care of their furry friends.

Jason Blair says people need to ensure their animals are receiving appropriate care and attention. He says the SPCA has been getting daily calls about dogs being left in cars on hot days.

“This is particularly common at shopping centres. We arrive to find a dog laying on the floor well of the car, trying to escape the heat and panting heavily.

“Surprisingly, nearly every time we are met with an angry response from owners that think it would be cruel to leave their dogs at home and think we

are over-reacting by visiting.”

Jason says people just don’t understand the danger; yet the first thing they do when they get in their car is wind down the window, or turn the air conditioning on.

For people planning to take a late holiday Jason asks pet owners to make sure their animal is taken care of.

“If you are choosing to leave your animal at home, either have a house sitter or at the very minimum ensure that someone visits your house to tend to the animals on a daily basis.

“This should ensure staying long enough to sight all the animals and show them some attention while also topping up food and water.”

How do I toilet train my puppy?

Toilet training a puppy is actually very easy.

The most essential tools for quick, successful toilet training are timing and patience.

Puppies cannot hold on for as long as adult dogs, so a crate or confined area will be necessary. If you are not using a crate or puppy room, then you will need to close as many internal doors as possible to prevent your puppy from sneaking off to relieve himself somewhere in the house.

Keep your puppy in the crate or confined area, and every 60-90 minutes leash your puppy and take him outside.

Taking him on a leash prevents him from being distracted and also means you can take him to a designated area if you choose. As soon as he has relieved himself reward him with a really tasty

treat, then come straight back inside. Coming straight back inside makes it very clear to the puppy the reason why you went out and helps keep toileting quick and immediate. Continue repeating this pattern of going out every hour or so until your puppy starts to signal himself, at the door, he needs to go out.

This can take anywhere from several days to a couple of weeks.

If, when you go outside, the puppy has not relieved himself after 10 minutes come back inside and try again in the next hour.

When you are not home the puppy will be crated or in the puppy room and will need to be taken out to toilet as soon as you come home.

If your puppy does toilet inside do not rub his nose in it or punish him.

It is unlikely he will associate it to the toileting and adds no benefit in teaching him good toileting habits. This is why timing is essential in rewarding as many successful attempts as possible.

Keep carbs under control Many of us are unknowingly threatening our health on a daily basis.

We all need a certain amount of glucose each day for energy, and any excess glucose is stored as fat. But this is only part of the story.

Carbohydrate provides the glucose. When this has been digested, the glucose ends up in our blood vessels.

Our little pancreas makes this clever hormone, called insulin. Its job is to help move the glucose to where it is needed for energy.

As the years go by, if we continue to over-eat carbohydrates and make too much glucose, the actual mechanism for clearing the glucose out of the bloodstream can start to fail.

A whole raft of things happen, including the pancreas struggling to make enough insulin and the

body can start to resist the insulin.

Now, here is the nasty bit, despite probably putting on weight and not feeling that flash at times, you don’t really know all this is happening.

Unknowingly, you will have too much glucose in your blood and this actually inflames the inside of your blood vessels.

Picture the redness and swelling caused by a boil or poisoned finger. This is happening inside your blood vessels, and they will start to become damaged.

You now are likely to have diabetes, and it is often the small blood vessels like in the eye that get affected first.

That’s why blindness often occurs, and other organ damage, amputa-

tion, stroke and heart disease are common. One in four Kiwis either has diabetes or is at risk.

Next time, we’ll look at a really simple method for making sure this doesn’t happen.

Yes it is that time of the year where we make the promises to improve our health and wellbeing –and though our intentions are good, we are not always committed to maintaining the changes.

Summer beauty tips for 2014 Here are a few tips for simplifying your make-up bag while on holiday and keeping your body in top shape.

Deep conditioning is extremely important for your hair in summer, especially if you’re swimming a lot.

Just like your hair, your skin can become dehydrated in the summer. Drink eight glasses of water per day, exfoliate and moisturise after bathing to lock in the moisture.

Reduce the number

of products you’re carrying around by using multi-use products. Good makeup removal wipes work as a cleanser, toner and moisturiser. Allpurpose balm can be used on lips, cheeks and eyelids for shine and rubbed onto dry skin on heels and elbows. Mascara is not so important that you need to risk panda eyes at the beach. Dust off your eyelash curler and get your eyes to pop without glops of black running down your cheeks.

If you really want darker lashes, getting them tinted will ensure colour without the mess.

Tinted moisturiser doubles as a moisturiser and foundation.

This way, you don’t have to go bare. Treat your body well and you’ll glow.

Dealing with different health problems I lost a battle with a small snapper I was trying to free.

It spiked me with such force I thought a dorsal spine had broken off and lodged deep in my finger.

I immediately went to see a doctor, who thought it was best to leave it and gave me a course of antibiotics to take if it became infected. At home, I kept it doused in colloidal silver and applied colloidal silver cream.

I’m sure my little finger will completely heal, but many health problems become a permanent part of our lives. It may be a twinge in your knee, which is later diagnosed as osteoarthritis, or chest pain diagnosed as coronary artery disease.

The challenge is how to respond to what are long-term health issues.

This started me thinking about how we should

respond to various health problems we face. In most cases, your GP is the best place to start. Exceptions are things like minor back strains, which can be diagnosed and treated by a chiropractor, osteopath or physiotherapist.

Many health problems have an inflammatory component, and subtle changes to diet and appropriate supplements can make a huge difference. For example, I recently helped someone with long-term digestive

Tales from the Tenancy Tribunal In O’Neill versus Tang, the Tenancy Tribunal reduced rent of a tenancy from $350 to $315 a week from the date of the order until the landlord replaced a roof, fixed a window and remediated mouldinfected surfaces.

The landlord also had to pay nearly $1000 compensation and exemplary damages to the tenant for failure to clean, maintain and repair the premises; failing to appoint an agent while overseas; requiring rent before the rent expiry period; and failing to lodge the bond.

The landlord also had to remove a previous tenant’s rubbish within 14 days of the order.

The tenant had taken photographs at the start of the tenancy of numerous maintenance issues, such as a hole in the ceiling caused by a leaking roof.

The landlord said the tenant agreed to clean the house and was given one weeks’ free rent and proceeds from freezer sale.

The tenant said proceeds were to pay for cleaning costs.

The Tribunal accepted the landlord had made efforts to renovate the house but work done before the tenancy didn’t rectify prob-

lems of mould, excessive drafts and a leaking roof.

The Tribunal said compensation was justified for the period of time the tenant spent in the property, with a temporary rent reduction until the work was complete.

In this situation the tenant used their rights under The Residential Tenancies Act to live in a safe and healthy house, protect their bond and have an agent for emergency contact.

Construction high for five years A recent report forecasting construction demands has been released.

The National Construction Pipeline report was commissioned for the Productivity Partnership, a joint industry and government body, in conjunction with BRANZ. Forecasting six years of construction demand, the report points to an unprecedented level of building and construction in New Zealand during the next five years.

With the obvious drivers of Auckland and Christchurch ramping demand, Western Bay of Plenty is sure to get a slice of the construction pie, peaking in the

second quarter of 2016.

Auckland will see demand out-stripping that of the Christchurch rebuild – and with this Bay of Plenty and Waikato will experience a spill-over effect of migration south and service supply to Auckland. Compounding local demand, this will ramp Bay of Plenty/Waikato as the third largest growth area behind Auckland and Christchurch, with Waikato accounting for about 60 per cent of building and construction activity in this region.

The rest of the country will see growth stabilise at consent highs of 2013 for new homes.

Baypark Speedway manager Roger Bailey is among those impressed, saying Brad’s form shows he has the potential to go a long way in speedway.

“There were a few people wondering how he would get on; and had written him off as a fly-by-nighter, that he would go out there all gung-ho and get himself into strife.”

“But that’s certainly not the Brad we’ve seen.

“He’s taking his driving seriously and treating it like a professional,” says Roger.

Only two months into the season, he recently finished just outside the podium in fourth place; and although he describes his efforts as ‘patchy’, he’s relatively happy.

“It’s a steep learning curve – there is just so much to learn, but everyone has been so helpful and giving me lots of advice and tips,” says Brad, who has set himself the ambitious goal of being the country’s top sprint racer within two years.

Right now, his immediate goal is a podium finish at Baypark and racing competitively against some of the country’s best sprint racers at Western Springs before the season finishes.

“It just comes down to more seat time,” says Brad, who also pays tribute to Colin Entwistle from Bay Speed for his pointers on controlling the car.

New stadium: Another white elephant?

Unbelievably, Tauranga City Mayor Stuart Crosby, sporting the thick end of three-decade council track record, is suddenly having this brain explosion about a new Tauranga Domain-sited stadium.

Yes, certainly, a stadium should have been there right from the outset instead of forking out $12 million to developer Bob Clarkson, which now has likely cost $20-$30 million with accumulated losses.

Despite being warned not to purchase Baypark, Crosby and Co drove that aberration through, lacking due diligence, robust business case or a main income stream - and Tauranga City Council ratepayers are paying very dearly.

Now Mr Crosby has an even wackier solution; let’s gloss over existing debt to build

another white elephant.

Not surprisingly, the pillagers of city council ratepayer funds will support this fiscal madness.

And it’s known new rugby stadiums cannot survive financially.

I endorse Terry (Horibop) Leeming’s initiative to convert ASB Baypark by removing the Speedway track and installing a low-level tiered seating and shipping the non-performing and non-conforming speedway off to TECT All Terrain Park, where noise is not an issue.

As Einstein surmised: “Insanity [financial] is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”.

About 2030, when the wood and steel Baypark Stadium snuffs it, let’s then go about revisiting the other venues for their suitability for such a facility.

Tauranga City Council’s shortcomings, the aspirations of some Maori people, the earth’s climate, and war and political mayhem in many countries.

But the one matter, which poses a life or death threat to every one of us, has been totally ignored. Today, the threat is the massive arsenals of nuclear weapons, with more nations trying hard to add to the stockpiles. There are also many nuclear-fuelled

power stations scattered over the surface of our planet.

The dispersion of any of these materials carries the very real possibility of wiping out all human life on earth; not over years, but in a matter of a few weeks.

We should forget our lesser problems and all of us should do what we can to have these real, and immediate, threats removed. Our lives , and that of our children, depend on it.

Is nothing left worth plundering from CBD?

I read recently that Tauranga City central business district’s crime figures have plummeted during the last three years.

Could that possibly be because there’s not much left of the CBD to plunder and pillage?

Being vigilant is fine, but building a great city needs vision, thought, planning and co-operation from our leaders. I look forward to seeing the like in 2014.

Phoenix park plan puzzles Those making comment that the Phoenix Carpark is only busy during Christmas holiday period day time, should cast their minds back a few years.

The carpark was heavily patronised year-round until the dreaded parking charges were introduced.

As predicted, the usage dropped as shoppers opted for the free on street parking.

Who will benefit from the change from car-parking to green space?

Certainly the developer leading the proposal, whose hard to let retail sites border the carpark, and the Tauranga City Council, which see it as a way to reduce debt while pillaging the in-fill development fund for the conversion.

Who will not benefit? Surely the retailers, who will lose customers not prepared to walk 500 metres from site proposed as replacement parking. Businesses being estab-

lished in the shopping centre are required to provide parking spaces before council consent is given.

Council allowed spaces in the Phoenix Carpark to be counted for the projected development to comply.

How will these businesses comply if the parking spaces are removed?

Also puzzling is the support for this conversion by Mount Mainstreet, rather than supporting developing more retail space.

“We have enough retail space” is their reported comment.

Surely one of their objectives is to promote and support business development?

Change protocols from the Dark Ages I’m beginning to wonder if we are living in the 21st Century or if we are being dragged back into the Dark Ages by submitting to so-called Maori protocols.

Apart from the ridiculous situations, like when roadworks are halted in case the workers upset the taniwha, now we’re having a disgraceful occurrence happening in Parliament.

This month it has emerged in the media that senior and

respected MPs Annette King and Maryan Street were ordered to vacate their front row seats because a powhiri was going to be performed to welcome a Youth Parliament group.

Parliament’s speaker, Mr David Carter, has stated he will hold discussions with Te Awiawa, the Wellington iwi instigators of this law, and that he will modernise Parliamentary protocol.

New Zealand is the first country

to allow women the vote; and men and women are equal here, including in Parliament.

The humiliation these two MPs endured is not acceptable, and the sooner we move forward into abolishing archaic protocols, the better.

What must the members of the Youth Parliament have thought of this show of denigration of women?

And we’re back in business Welcome back to 2014, there's a lot to talk about.

Not like a famous day back in 1930, Good Friday of that year to be precise, when the evening news broadcast started on the BBC (radio, obviously, this being pre-TV times) only for listeners to be greeted with the words: “Ladies and gentlemen, there's no news tonight so here is some music.”

Yes, on that historical date, listeners were treated to ten minutes of light piano music, because it was adjudged that nothing had happened.

That's clearly not the case here, where much has, and continues to occur. I've been keeping an eye on the Bay and have some titbits to share.

And I've also been glancing at the rest of the world.

It seems like a bit of a mess. For instance, there was a Gallup poll revealing that 46 per cent of Americans agree with the statement: “God created humans pretty much in their present form at one time in the last 10,000 years or so.”

46 per cent? I'm speechless (or whatever the literary equivalent is). I guess they regard science as just someone's opinion. And we all know that everyone's entitled to their own opinion – isn't that what freedom's all about? So what makes science so important anyway?

Who needs facts when everyone's got an opinion?

Actually there are interesting things, mostly not as scary as that last nugget, you can learn from Gallup polls in America. For instance, for the first time, in 2013 those favouring the legalisation of marijuana were in the majority at 58 per cent. Does that mean that more Americans now favour relaxed marijuana legislation than New Zealanders? That America is actually more liberal than New Zealand? Colour me surprised.

(Just as an aside, Gallup found that residents of Colorado were the least likely in America to be obese.

Whether that will change now pot has been legalised there has yet to be determined...)

But back to the Bay. There's a lot of good stuff to report. Over the next few

Beyondsemble will play at the Art Gallery. weeks I'll look into all this in greater detail but it's heartening to know that there are now more radio stations in the Bay (and not just Mount Maunganui's Kiss-FM), more recording studios, more gigs, and more albums and music planned for release in the next year than I can remember in any recent times. With a few advances (better venues, more radio, etc) we might yet make it onto the national map.

Baycourt has - for the first time and in a move that I don't quite understand but will write about at greater length when they get back from holiday and I can actually talk to someone from the organisation – come on board with the Arts On Tour programme, meaning that a whole lot of smaller New Zealand acts, Delaney Davidson and Tattletale Saints being just two, will be through here this year, a significant and exciting development.

More immediately, however, the Art Gallery are hosting a concert on Saturday January 18 and it'll be a doozy. Beyondsemble are as difficult to describe as their name is to remember but if you can get over those two things then they really are worth seeing.

The band is a four-piece out of Auckland - Craig Denham, Jon Sanders, Chris Koole, and John Ellis who between them play accordion, piano, whistles, guitar, bouzouki, ukulele, percussion, bass clarinet, and saxophones. They sing in harmony too. There used to be another member who played fiddle but she has obviously departed.

And the music? Well, they launched their latest album at last year's WOMAD, which seems appropriate as they do a bit of a lot of things, from jazz and gypsy swing to folk and country and stuff that sounds like Klezmer to me. And they do it all very well, with good humour and virtuoso skill.

Tickets are $30 for adults or $25 for students. It's at 7pm. And, if you missed the Hipshooters' powerful electric blues at Driver's Bar last week, they're back!

After touring the North Island they return to The Funky Lizard Cafe in Paengaroa for one last gig, kicking off at 2pm this Sunday (January 12).

I hear it's a great spot for music, especially if the sun is shining and it's outdoors.

The best of 2013 - Part 1…

After a brief intermission, welcome back to the wonderful world of movies and, as has become traditional, I'm going to start this year with a couple of weeks’ worth of looking back at the best films of last year.

Once upon a time this exercise lasted the whole of January but I've been able to whittle the best releases on blu-ray and DVD down to just a couple of dozen or so movies so a fortnight should do it. Next week we'll move on and look at horror films, comedies, foreign flicks and the ones that wouldn't fit easily into any of the traditional categories.

OK. Let's get to it. The envelope please...

OSCAR PICKS

And let me make immediately clear that these are not Oscar picks for 2014 but some of the various films that were up for – and even won – statuettes at the 2013 Oscars. Most of the winners are now available for home viewing and some of them hold up very well.

Life Of Pi looks just about as stunning at home as it did on the big screen. It really is a wonderful film, effortlessly surpassing the limitations of a story of a boy in a boat with a tiger. The tiger itself is a work of wonder, the shipwreck is masterful, and director Ang Lee's firm grasp on storytelling never wavers.

And Django Unchained is still an adrenalin rush of subversive rule-breaking. Slavery and comedy side by side? It still causes a jolt but the man's films are so viscerally watchable that you can't take your eyes off it.

Meanwhile Zero Dark Thirty has lost a little of its appeal in this fast-moving modern world. It seems a bit yesterday already. But, even not-so-current it's an impressive piece of film-making, as is Argo, which now looks like a rather iffy Best Picture winner, but is still a lot of fun as a perfectly-formed caper movie.

There was also the “guilty pleasure” side of action, perfectly embodied by Pacific Rim, as dumb and delightful asMEDIUM its monsters were huge.

For a year that was touted as “the year of sci-fi” the pickings – Oblivion? After Earth? - have been pretty slim. Neill Blomkamp's Elysium was pretty decent but cleverer, in a time-travelling / 12 Monkeys sort of way was Looper, which gave us Joseph GordonLevitt as a young Bruce Willis and had heart along with smarts.

Then there was the riotous delight that was John Dies In The End. Which isn't really sci-fi (but does have time travel bits...). It's a sorta horror comedy from Don Coscarelli, director of the legendary Phantasm films. Everything gets thrown into the weirdness blender here, coming up with exploding monsters, a time-travelling mind-altering drug called soy sauce, Paul Giamatti, and more laughs and ideas than you could fit into ten ordinary movies.

ACTION

Yay for Bond and Skyfall! An absolute triumph of style over substance (though by making a couple of references to Bond's childhood it pretended to have the latter too) this is a Bond film that has it all, from the spectacular opening chase onwards.

Iron Man 3 rocked too, finding the perfect blend of humour and action, while Star Trek: Into Darkness upset pimply on-line fanboys but knocked the

Career information at airshow One of the most important questions a young person answers in this world is ‘What will I be when I grow up?’

Classics of the Sky –Tauranga City Airshow gives young people and their families an opportunity to speak to those who work in the New Zealand Defence Force and the New Zealand Police and find out what life is like on a day-to-day basis.

Chief Petty Officer Seaman Combat Specialist Paul Chase from the NZDF Northern Region Recruiting Tauranga Office is attending the airshow on both Saturday and Sunday, January 25-26. While Paul is from the Royal New Zealand Navy, NZDF recruiters now recruit for all three services and also for civilian roles within the NZDF. Paul will be based at the recruiting bus which was seen at the 2012 airshow. It is an opportunity to talk about what the NZDF does now, he says.

“A lot of people think being in the military is all about war, but 99 per cent is about peace keeping, working on humanitarian tasks and providing disaster relief such as in the Philippine earthquake last year”.

NZ Police area response manager for Mount Maunganui, Papamoa, and Te Puke, Senior Sergeant Deidre Lack says the police officer based in the information tent at the airshow will talk to people about police careers, and have information available.

Deirdre says there will also be a form people can put their contact details on so the Police National HQ recruiting team can send further information.

Shearing experiences: speed shearing returns It’s not as easy as it looks – it’s highly competitive, highly skilled – and although it’s over in just a few seconds, speed shearing has been wowing audiences at Te Puna for years.

It will do so again on January 18, when experienced shearers from throughout the country compete for cash and prizes in the Farmlands Te Puna Speed Shear – that can impress even the staunchest of city slickers and country bumpkins.

“The contest is for experienced shearers only, and we never know till the day who will turn up. But in the past some of New Zealand’s top shearers, like Digger Balme and David Fagan, have competed in the open – and there’s a family of very talented shearers from Northland, who might compete in the senior,” says John Dalziel, one of the organisers.

“The veterans are always popular.

It is for shearers over 55, but some who compete are over 70 and they can shear a sheep in under 40 seconds.”

This year’s event is the 14th held at Te Puna, which every year attracts competitors who’ve been shearing at the Tauranga A&P Show the same day.

The action begins from about 5pm, with shearers competing on an improvised stage – the deck of a curtain-side truck, outside the Top Shot Bar at Te Puna, where a marquee is set up for the audience.

About 70 to 80 sheep are on hand to be shorn in speed races against the clock and other competitors.

The winner of the open event will receive $2000, with a $1000 prize for the senior and product prizes for the veterans.

The shearing events are interspaced, with live entertainment from the band New Zealand Made, Gary Sobye races against the clock to shear a sheep at last led by truck driver Russell Bennett. year’s Farmlands Te Puna Speed Shear event.

Leads needed for cheeky play Te Puke Repertory is seeking men and women to perform in the society’s upcoming comedy ‘Sex Please, We’re Sixty’.

Directed by Jim Kavanagh, the story takes place at Mrs Stancliffe’s Rose Cottage bed and breakfast. She is a perfectly proper hostess and has many clients, mostly women, returning each year. Mrs Stancliffe’s next door neighbour, Bud ‘The Stud’ Davis believes the main reason the “chicks” return each season is to spend time with him in romantic liaisons.

Henry, is Mrs Stancliffe’s other neighbour, a wouldbe suitor and retired chemist. He has developed a blue pill called Venusia designed to increase the libido of menopausal women. But when Bud mistakenly takes the Venusia, the rollicking fun begins.

The society is seeking four women and two men, aged between 50 and 70 to join the cast.

The importance of keeping your goals How many people make New Year’s resolutions only to have them last a few months, a few weeks, a few days or even hours?

Goals can become an unfulfilled, out-there-somethings if we don’t take some form of action towards them.

The great work of the Spirit There exists much confusion in the church today concerning the Ministry of God, the Holy Spirit.

How to identify and discern a true movement of the Spirit is a subject of much debate. However, God has not left us uninformed and reliant on our own speculation and experience. He’s already given us clear markers in His word to identify when the Holy Spirit is at work, and when He is absent.

In John chapters 14 to 16, Jesus teaches His disciples foundational principles concerning the work of the third member of the Trinity. Here we learn of at least three aspects that must be true if the Spirit is at work. If they are absent, then so is He. First, Jesus tells His disciples that the Spirit “will bear witness about me” (John 15:26). A true movement of the Spirit will exalt and magnify the Lord

Jesus Christ and draw us to adore Him for who He is and what He has done.

Second, Jesus says that the Spirit “will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment” (John 16:8). When the Spirit is at work, the Gospel will be proclaimed with uncompromising clarity and many will learn that the wrath of God abides on them; but then see the open arms of the Saviour who calls all men to repent, turning from sin and surrendering to Him. Third, Christ informs the disciples that the Spirit “will guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit authored the Scriptures and will never work in opposition to or divorced from the truth, the Word of God. When the Spirit is working, the Scriptures will be boldly declared, clearly explained and reverently submitted to.

Do we have the courage to apply these tests to our lives, ministries and churches?

It’s more than two years since the Rena went aground on the Astrolabe Reef. Since then a huge amount of work has been done by many people – salvors, scientists, central and local government agencies, iwi and many volunteers – to mitigate environmental damage, reduce and make safe the wreck, and plan for the future of the wreck.

In the next week or so the accommodation block on the Rena will be removed by cutting it into two sections using chain to cut through the steel, and then lifting the pieces so they can be tethered to a barge, towed to calmer waters and then lifted onto a larger barge for transport into the Port for cutting up and recycling.
