Outrageous news for the criminally inane Thanks for the enormous feedback this week from the last RR column – just goes to prove how shallow and inane you all are.

Shame on you for being so easily amused… to snigger and sneer at smutty innuendo and other people’s misfortunes.

Here’s some more.

Changes are likely to drink driving laws, reducing blood-alcohol levels. Some reports this week have tried to quantify the new levels using examples of famous New Zealanders, such as Richie McCaw, who they say could down half a dozen of his sponsor’s beers in a two-hour period before reaching the new legal limit.

The proposal is to drop the allowable sozzle level from 80 to 50 milligrams of alcohol, per 100 millilitres of blood. Under the new pro-

posal, drivers caught between 50 mg and 80 mg would not go to court, but instead face $200 fines and 50 demerit points.

Experts say larger men had the advantage of having more body water to dilute alcohol; so under the new limit, All Blacks captain McCaw could probably quaff up to six Steinlagers in two hours and still drive home, while internet mogul Kim Dotcom could drink up to 26 shots of schnapps.

On this basis, RR has identified other notable folk who could be affected by the limits: We believe David Cunliffe could swallow four standards units of his own propaganda and still be able to steer the Labour Party home.

Jimmy Spithill could be eight boat races behind at the start, but then quaff nine and steal the cup.

Mahe Drysdale will never be over the limit, because he does single sculls.

Rachel Hunter will reach the limit eventually. Not overnight, but it will happen.

No laughing matter

Some drivers in the Western Bay are so bad they don’t need to be drunk to be a hazard.

We’ve seen some shocking antics on the highways and roundabouts this week.

Mind you, not as bad as this recent story out of the USA… You think Tauranga drivers are clowns?

Police in Pennsylvania found it was no laughing matter, when a van full of clowns pulled a U-turn and crashed on their way to the state fair. The driver, Dimples the Clown, suffered a minor bump on the head. The 83-year-old was wearing oversized shoes at the time, but police say this was not a contributing factor in the crash.

Henry’s back

Good news for all you closet Paul Henry fans out there: He’s coming back.

The exiled TV frontman – whose only crimes are having the balls to say what most of you think; and the ability to wind up anyone who takes themselves too seriously – is back on TV in the new year with the Paul Henry show. It replaces the ailing ‘Nightline’. (Now if only TV3 could get rid of that irritating Campbell idiot, the channel might be worth watching).

For those of you starved of Henryism for the last few years, here’s another antidote.

He’s written a book, called ‘Outraged’, and it tackles the everyday annoyances that most of us encounter, but have been so brow-beaten by PC control freaks, we have forgotten how to stand up for ourselves.

Included is Mr Henry’s complaint that everyone gets a designated carpark, except him.

My old uncle Kenny always used to say: “You gotta know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, know when to walk away, know when to run”.

He’ll be adding: “Know when to jump” after seeing the incredible footage of two plane loads of skydivers, who managed to leap out of their aircraft and save themselves after a mid-air collision.

Quote of the week goes to the skydiver who wryly noted: “The wing broke off so we just left”.

Tough deal of the week

Here at RR we are pleased to see the end of yet another pointless fireworks night; and it’s equally invalid cousin, Halloween.

Both should be taken out the back and shot.

Digging up Katikati’s history Mishmish Heritage managing director and archaeologist Brigid Gallagher and Katikati kaumatua Paeahi Wanakore at Summerset’s archaeological dig.

History of Katikati’s coastline has been unearthed this week, following an archaeological dig at the Summerset By The Sea retirement development.

Physical evidence of wide-scale Maori activity has been found at the Park Rd site, with a Waihi Beach archaeologist to record and document any signs of archaeological or pre-historic occupation or land-use, as required for the development’s second stage to progress.

After two weeks, Mishmish Heritage managing director and archaeologist Brigid Gallagher says her team has found many archaeological features, some potentially 500 years old, relating to foodcultivating activity by Maori – undertaken on a large scale at multiple points in time.

“What we’re finding is a lot of features pertaining to gardening,

storage of kumara, perhaps potatoes,” says Brigid.

“It’s really nice to see in Katikati, because this area – although there’s been odd archaeological sites pinpointed – is demonstrating in a very visual inconclusive way there was lots going on here, which no-one in this area generally accepts or considers when thinking about development of the landscape.”

Katikati kaumatua Paeahi Wanakore, who saw the site’s foreshore archaeological clearance about five years ago, is happy with the findings.

“Europeans have been saying we didn’t live here – we’re saying to them we did live here because old people told us we did live here,” says Pae. “But nothing was written, it was all handed down by mouth – and this is evidence.”

Pae says it would not have just been ancestors of his own iwi who

enjoyed the coastline.

“Maori were very transient people, they moved round the coast where the food was – the last 100 years I would say would have probably been this iwi here now.

But before that – well it could have been anybody.”

The development’s foreshore clearance show Maori activity post-European arrival but Brigid says this dig shows strong physical evidence, by way of food storage pits, shell middens and rua (underground kumara storage pits), a long period of settlement

“We haven’t got any returns on the dates yet – but it could anywhere from 500 years ago, with occupation coming and going across the landscape, up until the present day.

“This is the last chance to record these findings – because once the land is developed, it is gone.”

A total of $71,927 was compensated as part of the nationwide total of $3.29 million in the last financial year.

But while Tauranga City Council’s animal services team leader Brent Lincoln is wary of the figures he remains optimistic the problem can be controlled, citing the numbers are reflective of the city’s rising population.

“I haven’t noticed a big change in the number of dogrelated injuries. It is usually around 0.7 per cent of the city’s population,” says Brent.

“With an increasing population there is an increase in dog numbers also, but we are actively monitoring this.”

In 2012, there were 10,082 dogs were known to council – with 117 classified as menacing and 25 classed as dangerous. Of this 8809 dogs were registered.

In the same year a total of 116 infringements were recorded, with eight prosecutions made under the Dog Control Act 1996 and seven resulting in orders of destruction.

An ACC spokesperson says it is vital to remember these figures are relating to dog-related injuries and not specific to dog bites.

“Most dog-related injuries are minor, requiring a visit to the GP; the three most common injuries being lacerations, soft tissue injury and dental injury.”

Brent admits last year was “busier than normal” with a high number of claims and incidents reported in the two months of October and January.

“These are our busiest months, so we will have to see how they go this year. We are currently collating the data for October.”

The data was released alongside the latest information on dog populations from the National Dog Database, and dog-related prosecution numbers from the Ministry of Justice.

After months of practising, about 70 aspiring young Bay of Plenty musicians are aiming to strike the right chord on Thursday when they take to Baycourt’s stage for Bandquest.

The competition, which offers musicians under Year 9 a chance to hone their performance skills, is tapping in the growing interest of making it as a performer – being fuelled by television shows like ‘New Zealand’s Got Talent’.

Among the 15 bands from around the Bay competing next week for places at the national play-offs, are two groups from Tauranga Intermediate School where music teacher Jessica Walley says there has been strong interest from her pupils.

“There is definitely an interest in

the bandquest from the musicians here at Tauranga Intermediate – and seeing the success that [former Bandquest competitor] Calista Grey is having is definitely part of the appeal.”

Calista, who is through to the semi-finals of ‘New Zealand’s Got Talent’, was a member of the school’s band Chase Replica, which placed second in the regional Bandquest competition two years ago.

Purple Maze bass player Jack Tortoiseshell, 11, is excited about the competition, saying his fivemember band has been practising about three times a week for two terms to hone their performance.

“I would love to make it big in a band, or make it on Broadway,” says Jack, who is hoping the competition will be an important step to success.

Purple Maze vocalist George Hiku, 12, says the competition – which is run by organisers of the long-established Rockquest for secondary school groups – is a great chance for him “to improve my singing”.

Bandquest director Glenn Common set up the competition following requests from teachers for a contest to encourage school bands in this age-group.

The response has been encouraging, says Glenn, “with lots of enthusiasm and a high level of sophistication in performances”.

Other bands competing in Thursday’s regional competition are groups from Mount Maunganui and Otumoetai intermediates, Papamoa and Katikati colleges, and Pongakawa and Pyes Pa schools.

Airborne crash creates havoc

Stores busted selling to minors Two stores in the Western Bay of Plenty have been caught selling alcohol to minors since the beginning of the year.

A 52-year-old Rotorua man is “extremely lucky” to be alive after his ute became airborne and collided with two logging trucks in quick succession on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services rushed to the crash on State Highway 36, at its intersection with Taumata Road, about 2.30pm after reports the man was trapped in his flipped silver Toyota Hilux.

Western Bay of Plenty Road Police, Senior Sergeant Mike Owen says it appears the ute, travelling towards Rotorua, crossed the centre line around the slight left hand bend, hitting the wheel carriage on the first of two Tauranga-bound logging trucks, causing a chain reaction.

The man is currently in Tauranga Hospital in a stable condition.

Rena divers’ serious incidents

Two serious incidents involving professional divers working on the Rena have given the Resolve Salvage team a scary shake-up.

The two men – a 25-year-old New Zealander and 31-year-old American – were both taken to Tauranga Hospital for treatment following the separate incidents on October 19 and 29.

Rena recovery spokesperson Hugo Shanahan says on October 19, the Kiwi diver reported experiencing breathing problems while at approximately 110 feet, or 34 metres.

During the second incident on October 29, Hugo says the American diver’s umbilical snagged in two separate locations while he was ascending from 151feet, or 46 metres. He had to descend again to clear both obstacles.

TECT cheques at the ready

TECT’s little helpers are busy stuffing and folding envelopes with this year’s TECT cheques as 56,000 Bay of Plenty residents await an early dose of Christmas cheer.

Next week TECT will pay $26.5million to its customers as part of its annual cheque distribution scheme, stretching from Waihi Beach to Otamarakau.

TECT chairperson Michael Cooney says the million dollar figure will go to the 56,000 TrustPower account holders, receiving a minimum of cheque amount of $400 per household.

Teens charged over pipe bomb

Police have arrested and charged three teenagers for allegedly placing a pipe bomb in a rural Waihi letterbox, sparking a bomb squad call-out at the weekend.

Police say two 18-year-olds and one 16-year-old are charged with possession of an explosive device in a public place.

The teenagers were arrested after a Waihi property owner saw an unknown vehicle pull up to his letterbox at about 10pm on Sunday.

Quiet Guy Fawkes for firefighters A quiet Guy Fawkes night for firefighters throughout the Bay has them praising the community for its safe fireworks practices.

Greerton Fire Brigade attended two call-outs believed to be fireworks-related on Tuesday night, while Tauranga Fire Brigade had an uneventful night with one false alarm.

Alcohol harm reduction and liquor licensing coordinator Sergeant Nigel McGlone says, while some people may say two is too many, there has been a steady improvement in compliance.

“When I started in this job seven years ago, every time we did an operation we were consistently getting two or three stores selling.

“But since about 2009 we have seen a steady improvement and that has been through some good liaison with off-

licence operators, council and police – and everyone getting together and working through what we wanted to achieve.”

If a licensee or duty manager is caught selling alcohol to a minor, and they are charged and go to court, they could face a fine of up to $10,000. If it’s just a general retail worker, or shop assistant, the penalty is $2000.

“What we generally tend to do is refer the premise and the duty manager through to the liquor licencing authority in Wellington and they generally impose a suspension,” says Nigel.

“We generally look at a closure of a shop for a day or two and a suspension of a manager’s certificate. The penalty

Police warn of fatigued driving Tauranga Police are highlighting the importance of driving a vehicle when you’re well-rested in a bid to prevent crashes involving people who fall asleep at the wheel.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says drivers need to make the right decision before deciding to drive.

“People know very well when they are tired; when they have been burning the candle at both ends.

“It’s actually up to people to make the right decision around how they are feeling and if they should be driving – irrespective of the distance they are going to travel.”

Ian says drivers don’t have to travel far to actually fall asleep behind the wheel.

“People often associate fatigue with long distances we undertake. But, in fact, they apply to the shorter journeys equally.

“The biggest thing is making sure you leave yourself plenty of time in your journey, to get to your destination.”

Figures from the Ministry of Transport’s figures for 2012 show 51 people died in crashes where fatigue was identified as a factor, 139 suffered serious injuries and another 555 suffered minor injuries.

The total social cost of crashes, involving fatigue in 2012, is an estimated $291 million.

“Don’t be in a rush, take plenty of breaks – but it’s also about not getting behind a wheel when you are fatigued,” says Ian. “You might be tired through lack of sleep, it may be because you are unwell; it might be because of medication you’re on.”

National speed trials at rural schools Pyes Pa School and Pahoia School are the first two Western Bay of Plenty schools to be part of a national trial aiming to improve the safety of children in rural areas.

Pet owners warned to prepare for heat Tauranga pet owners are being warned to have the proper steps in place to prevent their pets from suffering from heat exhaustion during summer.

Tauranga SPCA animal welfare inspector Jason Blair says the warmer weather will bring an increase in heat-related welfare concerns being reported.

“Dog owners need to ensure that they are set up for summer. Their dog needs to have access to appropriate shelter that is ventilated and of sufficient size.

“Make sure your dogs’ water is clean and in a large container that is secured in some way to ensure it won’t be tipped over.”

Jason pleads with people not to leave their dog in a car no matter how short the time they think they will be away from their car.

“Over the peak of summer we will receive daily calls about dogs in dangerously hot cars.

“If people are concerned for the welfare of an animal they should call the SPCA for advice or to make a formal complaint.”

A Tauranga special school principal is hoping to use a popular nationwide mini collectable programme to educate children with disabilities social and life skills.

New World supermarket’s Little Shop Collectables programme sees shoppers receive a free mini grocery item for every $40 spent in-store.

Kaka Street Special School associate principal Deb Hudson says her school’s teachers currently bring in their own collectables from home “as a special treat

for the children”.

“It’s more of a reward thing at this stage,” says Deb. But she hopes to collect enough mini items for the whole school to use, to teach the children social and life skills as well as mathematics and “turn taking”.

“We’d like to get a full shop into our junior classrooms. But actually, having the individual object would be really good for them.”

Kaka Street Special School is a school for students, aged five to 21, with special educational needs.

The school currently has 69 children in nine classrooms.

Celebrating Diwali’s light

Tauranga BNZ Partners Centre manager Pam WrightSt Clair is inviting the Indian community to celebrate Diwali – the Indian festival of lights – this Tuesday.

Pam says the official Diwali Day is on November 3 where Indian people – of all religions – can get together for prayers at local temples. But they are celebrating on November 11.

According to Pam, Diwali Day is a celebration of “light over darkness”. The festival will consist of a gettogether, with light nibbles, at Tauranga BNZ Partners Centre on November 11 from 5.15pm-7.00pm.

With 44 individual grocery items to collect, the popularity of the supermarket miniatures has taken the country by storm.

Last week Brookfield, Mount Maunganui, Gate Pa and Te Puke New World stores held a mass Little Shop trade-in with about 400 people lining up at some of the supermarkets to swap their extra mini grocery items for ones needed to complete a 44-piece set.

Paddling boarders and outriggers will be the hot topic at Pilot Bay this Sunday, as the East Coast Paddling Club host their ‘Have A Go’ day.

From 10-1pm, the public are encouraged to come along and have a go at stand-up paddle-boarding, or test their skills in an outrigger at the Hoe Aroha Waka Ama Club Waikorire at Pilot Bay. A $2 donation is required, with all proceeds to the Hoe Aroha Waka Ama Club senior crews, who are competing in this month’s Vaka Eiva outrigger race in Rarotonga.

Heather, Heather and Heather How many times can we write Heather in one story? Let’s give it a go…

A Tauranga woman is organising a get-together for Bay of Plenty residents. Sounds simple – but there’s a catch: you must be named Heather.

On Sunday, November 17, Heather McLean is inviting Heathers of all ages to her Heatherfest lunch at Oak Tree Restaurant in Greerton.

“The only rule is you have to be called Heather,” she says.

The 76-year-old started the event in 2008, attended by 86 Heathers for lunch at Bureta Park Motor Inn’s restaurant.

In the beginning she held the Heatherfests once or twice a year, but is now hoping to make it an annual occasion.

Heather says there are other namesake groups which meet in Tauranga and at the last event in 2012 the Heathers met for lunch with the Shirley group and the Lois group.

The youngest Heather to attend the event was 19 and the oldest was 86, she says.

“We’ve even got a lady named Heather Heather.”

According to Heather, the name comes from a flowering evergreen plant common in the Scottish Highlands.

Heather’s father was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and she believes that is why she was named Heather.

“He came out [to New Zealand] as a five-year-old. I think he was trying to bring back his memory of Scotland.”

“The older you are, the more people you find who are older than you,” says 99-year-old Tauranga man Peter Harvey.

The Otumoetai resident is celebrating 100 years this Tuesday with his family and friends at Mills reef Winery.

“It’s coming up quite rapidly,” says Peter. “I’m looking forward to it, but the last few weeks have seemed like two years. I’m sick of being 99.”

Despite his upcoming centenary, Peter has recently renewed his drivers’ licence and is intent on keeping behind the wheel for a while yet. “In two years’ time I’m going to renew it again.”

Some of Peter’s secrets to longevity include “keeping active” talking to neighbours and going for walks – he’s even bought himself a new laptop to keep up-to-date with what his three children and six grandchildren are up to.

As a youngster, Peter was “mad about rugby”.

His father, also named Peter Harvey, was a former All Black in 1904 – and in 1905 was picked to travel England with the All Blacks. So naturally, Peter was brought up around New Zealand’s national sport.

“I always had a wish to be an All Black. I had a

few good skills, but I didn’t have the physique. I was always very small – weighing 63 kilograms.”

In 1930 Peter joined the National Bank of New Zealand in Christchurch and met his late wife Joyce in 1937. “That’s when I sort of lost interest in rugby,” laughs Peter.

The couple married in October 1938 and moved to Palmerston North to start a life together. Peter worked as a radio mechanic in the New Zealand Air Force for three years – including 12 months in the Pacific as a member of the Corsair Party – “before going back to work at the bank”.

Transferred to different branches throughout the country – Peter moved to Wellington three times.

He was manager of the Courtney Place branch in Wellington before retiring and later moving to Tauranga in 1980 with his Joyce, who died in 1987.

Three years later, in 1990, Peter met Blanche who he shared 17 “happy” years with before she died in 2007.

Stroke after shoulder-burning stroke, two Bay of Plenty waka ama women are taking their training to the next level by covering the unchartered canoeing waters of Matakana Island.

In a pioneering first tomorrow morning, Rebecca Boyce and Yvonne Roger will prepare to paddle into the unknown, by attempting to circumnavigate a 63 km loop of Matakana Island in an OC1 – single outrigger canoe.

Starting 8.30am at Sulphur Point boat ramp, the pair will make their way through the harbour to its Bowentown entrance before returning back to Tauranga along the front of Matakana, finishing at The Boat Expo on The Strand.

“About a year-and-a-half ago, I thought I wondered why no-one had done it. We are doing it for ourselves as Yvonne has an aunty living on the island and I‘m living locally,” says Rebecca.

“If we do it we will be the first women, which will be pleasing and the first to do it in a day.”

The gut-busting loop sees the pair paddle in a relaystyle format, alternating every 15-20 minutes between the canoe and a support boat, in what is predicted to take up to six hours.

Rebecca has been involved in the sport for the last three seasons with Tauranga Moana Outrigger Canoe Club; while Yvonne, the Lakes District Health Board smokefree coordinator, is a waka ama veteran of eight years, with an illustrious medal haul of six bronze, four silver and seven gold medals at national level.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun and we have a lot of confidence in each other and our abilities,” say the pair.

For the ladies, the event is a perfect training run for the 65 km Kaiwi Channel relay in Hawaii next May. Starting at the island of Molokai, teams cross the Kaiwi Channel to Oahu – in “challenging conditions”.

“It’s one of those races that people will think they need to do, and it will be my first internationally. So why not make it a big one?” says Rebecca.

“This will be the first time any of our team will be paddling in these waters. We are independent, strong and healthy. And we’ll be representing the wahine [women] of Aotearoa [New Zealand] in this exciting event.” To follow the women, visit: www.wahinetoamaori.weebly.com

Students’ mystery solved A group of Tauranga Girls’ College students have had their mystery solved, after seeking the community’s advice for what two “very old” metal spectacles were used for.

Four Year 10 students have been collecting ancient medical artefacts to display in two handmade cabinets at the Bay of Plenty District Health Board’s Clinical School as part of a school project.

Of the 13 medical artefacts – the use of two metal spectacles could not be identified. But Auckland University optometry and vision science associate professor Rob Jacobs has confirmed one pair “could possibly be [used for] protection against x-rays”, or to “provide protection against heat”.

Rob says the second pair could be a device for nasal delivery of oxygen, or other gases, to a person.

A thousand shoeboxes stocked with games, colouring pencils, musical instruments and more are making their way to Third World countries, to arrive as Christmas presents for povertystricken children.

The parcels were sent from Tauranga last week through Operation Christmas Child – an international project run by relief organisation Samaritan’s Purse, since 1993.

Each year, more than 100 million children throughout 130 countries receive a shoebox with gifts donated by residents,

churches and businesses.

Tauranga coordinator Thelma Lindup says 1000 boxes have been sent from Tauranga this year, after a push for donations during October.

“We look for really lovely, practical things. So the boxes are full with coloured pencils, toothbrushes, tennis balls, bouncy balls, musical instruments, etc.”

Each shoebox costs about $9 to send.

“A smart fellow stays off the yellow” is the message 16 Year 6 Papamoa Primary students –donned in orange – will be chanting as they march Tauranga’s CBD with 500 others today.

Papamoa Primary is among about 25 Tauranga City and Western Bay schools participating in the Orange Day parade kicking off 9.30am – an event hosted by Travel Safe and police to celebrate students being involved in road safety efforts at their education facilities.

Papamoa Primary School deputy principal Gen Fuller says 16 of her school’s 22 Year 6 road patrollers have created a banner for Orange Day, which they’ll later use to promote a positive message to prevent a road safety problem unique in their community.

“Orange Day is about recognising the children who have made a commitment throughout the year to helping support road safety at our school by being road patrollers; so it’s a thank you to them for their commitment,” says Gen, who says her students decided to make a banner to positively prevent people parking on the yellow lines outside of their school.

“The banner has a two-prong effect – it enables us to profile a positive message of parking in appropriate places.

“But it’s also for next year – when we’ll place it outside the school to publicly encourage a change in behaviour.”

Travel Safe programme leader Karen Smith says the parade celebrates Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty primary or intermediate school students’ participation in road safety efforts, via help from Travel Safe and police.

“The students always put a lot of effort into them, so they send clear messages – and are specific to meet needs of their individual communities,” says Karen.

“The banners are not a one-off – they’re re-used in following years by upcoming students – who can re-look at the message, change it, or refine if they think necessary.”

The Orange Day parade sees Year 5-6 students march a loop from The Strand, along Harrington, Willow, Grey, and Elizabeth streets, back to the waterfront.

WBOP Area Commander Inspector Clifford Paxton, Tauranga City councillor Bill Grainger and Western Bay of Plenty District councillor Don Thwaites will open the parade, with judging of banners and a presentation of primary and intermediate winners at Baywave TECT Aquatic and Leisure Centre afterwards.

A swimming mystery solved

Oropi Hot Pools and Country Cafe fans may be able to swim at the facility’s this Christmas, following its mystery closure since June.

Tauranga resident Denise Bartlam and her three daughters have been trying to swim at the pools for four months.

But a sign at the locked gate saying: “Sorry we are closed due to a pump failure”, a phone message explaining the same, unanswered emails, and an inactive Facebook page – has stopped them from attempting to swim at the well-known hot pools.

After having no reply from the hot pools’ email address, Denise sent an email to owner Robyn Coopers’ personal address, expressing her concerns and wishing her well.

“We always come here. Everyone talks about it,” says Denise.

Robyn still could not be reached and emails were left answered. But when The Weekend Sun visited the property last week, Robyn explained she had not been answering her phone calls or updating her Facebook Page and apologised.

Robyn says she “misses the people dearly” and will be updating her Facebook page shortly.

Contractors have been working at the site for almost five months, trying to find hot water after the hot water bore collapsed.

“They’re trying everything they can. As soon as we can find that, we need to get the temperature right and we need to get the flow,” says Robyn, who believes the site’s minerals have eroded the casing of the hot water bore she put down 13 years ago.

With replacement of the old bore underway, Robyn says the task is taking time due the water being more than 400 metres deep. Contractors have managed to dig at least half way and now “they’re stuck”.

“I think they’ve hit some rhyolite.

They have even broken their tools.

We’re into our third hole now.”

Breaking bad cycles While I’ve been called the baby of Tauranga City Council, I’m old enough to have seen some of my childhood snacks either reinvent themselves or cease production all together.

It seems like everything has a natural lifecycle of prosperity and eventual decline. Even the mighty All Blacks were arguably stuck in a four-year performance cycle, with a history of peaking the year before a Rugby World Cup was held.

Moving forward

What does this have to do with Tauranga City Council?

Well, even the council goes through its own lifecycle.

During the last decade, council has swung like a pendulum from financially liberal, to more conservative (well, attempted conservatism).

Hopefully, the new council will consider a smarter approach to delivering community prosperity by creating better value for your investment. I believe the council should stop swinging like a pendulum from liberal to conservative – and back again.

Let’s move forward instead.

Tauranga has experienced a period of low investment in its arts and cultural scene. But let’s not swing the pendulum towards liberal expenditure in this area too fast, too quickly.

Don’t get me wrong, I love what smart investment into the sector has done to revitalise communities in similar positions to Tauranga.

Let’s take the time to find out why the community has stood up to try to make the Summerfest youth

It’s not ‘all hui and no doey’ though. Council’s new community development committee is looking to support neighbourhoods to take ownership of their local spaces.

For example, the committee may look to support local communities in designing, building and looking after their playgrounds, parks and community centres.

Just like the All Blacks did at the 2011 Rugby World Cup, our council needs to break its cycle too. But we won’t get it right every time. Even a big-brand chocolate company recently got it wrong when it used palm oil in its products.

They tried to keep their costs low for its customers, but neglected their customers’ values and expectations. (And, the company’s market research budget is much larger than council’s consultation budget).

Let’s stay focused on the outcomes we want to achieve in the community.

Tauranga couple Meyric and Lyn Bellerby is often found hauling out weeds in the undergrowth at Johnson Reserve near the edge of Waipuna Park in Welcome Bay. The couple moved to Waipuna Grove in 2003 where their property backs onto the reserve, which was then full of blackberry and gorse.

Project clean up

A project to clean up the reserve was started by local resident Tony Burgess-Short, a local under the banner of Weed Busters, and Meyric was keen to join in and help clean up his new backyard.

“At the time, the area they were clearing was not accessible by road, so a horse and cart were brought in to haul out tonnes of blackberry and gorse,” says Envirohub Bay of Plenty’s greenspace coordinator Tania Gaborit-Haverkort.

When Tony moved on, Meyric and Lyn continued to treat Johnson Reserve as an extension of their garden, and have done so for the last nine years.

They spend one morning every week weeding down in the reserve along with their fellow dedicated neighbour Peter Cooper.

The couple has enjoyed working together with their neighbours during the years to help remove weeds, plant natives, and attempt to control rats – with support from the Tauranga City and the Bay of Plenty Regional councils, along with additional help from the Urban Greenspace project from 2007-2009.

“The Urban Greenspace Project supported neighbourhood groups to adopt and care for local reserves in urban areas. Unfortunately, the project lost government funding at the end of 2009, resulting in most of the groups losing touch with each other,” says Tania.

This year, Envirohub BOP secured seed funding via the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Annual Plan to look into redevelopment of the Greenspace project.

Meyric says he is 100 per cent behind the project being re-started.

“It is a great way to encourage community involvement. If you’re part of a care group, you’re interested and engaged with your local community.”

Envirohub will be hosting a series of community get-togethers during the coming months to give people the opportunity to share their visions for their neighbourhood Greenspaces.

Girl Guides altogether In a first for Girl Guides across the Bay of Plenty, a mass event incorporating all levels of the organisation is taking over Te Puna Quarry Park this weekend.

The GirlGuiding BOP Adventure Race will see mixedage teams of two to four navigate their way around a fun course at the park – involving a few mental and physical challenges along the way.

GirlGuiding BOP Support Welcome Bay pippin leader Sonia Anderson says this is the first time the Bay’s section of Girl Guides has brought all four age groups together for one event – and it will be great to see girls of different ages, from age five to 18, working together.

On Sunday, about 250 children will run, crawl, jump and climb their way through a 1 km obstacle course in the fourth annual event, hosted by Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s Aquatic and Fitness team.

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic aquatic and fitness manager Keith Martin says it is a great day of fun for all of the competitors – aged 4 to 12 years – to get out and be active on the weekend.

“We have the usual two big massive inflatables [bouncy castles], sack race, balance beams – which are a new obstacle – tackles bags, ladders, cargo nets, slalom poles and bear crawls,” says Keith.

“The emphasis is around having fun, but there is always an element of competitiveness in there. They really enjoy the tackle bags, which they have to burst their way through.”

With organisers offering more open space for plenty of running, the four to seven-year-old competitors will complete one lap, while eight to 12-year-old athletes can tackle the course twice.

Following races, plenty of spot prizes will be given out, from the event’s newest sponsor Podium Podiatry. Food will be on offer; along with the family and crowd favourite – a bombing competition – in the thermally heated pool.

With 230 competitors taking part last year, an even bigger swell of entrants is expected this Sunday, says Keith. “We just get most of them entering on the day.”

Mown down with family fun For the uninitiated, Omokoroa No 1 School’s Ride-on Mower Race Day sounds like it might be just aimed at getting men out of their sheds – but the traditional gala day activities offer plenty for everyone.

Race Day coordinator Bronwyn Carter says the day’s focus is all about family fun with traditional gala attractions – including rides, live entertainment from the Beat Club, tasty food and second-hand bargains – together with the Bay’s biggest silent auction, and stalls promoting local businesses.

As the 10th Ride-on Mower Race Day, organisers are aiming to make it “bigger and better” than before and have added a few new attractions, including Water Walkers, where people are enclosed in large plastic bubbles and can ‘walk’ over a pool of water.

Bronwyn says this year event, which is expected to attract more than 4000 people, is a true community event and is only a success thanks to the support of hundreds of people’s help and the backing of major sponsors.

Sara Madsen, who organises the business exhibitors – which range from Go Karts Direct with their zippy machines, to water stain remover Diamond Fusion (ideal for stopping stains from the area’s mineral-rich water), to sweet and shed specialists – says the event’s past success is a tribute to an amazing team involved.

High quality second-hand clothes, books and toys will be on offer at great prices, along with a silent auction of almost 200 donated items and vouchers from local businesses and families, a quick fire raffle, a delicious range of tasty food, and a traditional farmers’ market.

Children will be entertained with a range of attractions – including a giant bouncy castle, a vertical bungy, mini jeep rides, coconut shy, tyre roll and much more. Plus, they can also buy some home-made goodies at the Year 6 students’ fundraising stalls.

Reigning national champion mower racer Tor Cunningham and his dad Bill will be among the top Tauranga contenders to watch out for at Omokoroa on Sunday.

Mower mechanic chasing the chequered flag For mower mechanic Bill Cunningham, it was almost inevitable he would start racing lawnmowers.

The racing enthusiast, who has competed in drag racing and rallying, had seen the enthusiasm his boss Adam Pendred – the Bay of Plenty Lawn Mower Racing Club president – had for tearing around a field on a mower, so he was keen to try it himself.

Bill quickly developed a passion for the racing, and has had his share of success in the Class Two modified engine race, where he has put his mechanical skills to use to improve performance. But Bill says it’s son Tor, who is the top talent in his family, quickly achieving success on Bill’s spare mower when he returned home from overseas three years ago.

This weekend, Tor will be defending the national championship title he has held in Class One for the last two years.

“He’s just very determined. He’s very focused when he’s racing and gives it everything he can.”

This Sunday both father and son will be ripping around the field at Omokoroa No. 1 School, in the race event that is also the national championship, with hopes for

dryer weather than last year.

“It wasn’t ideal with a wet track, but it dried out over the day,” says Bill.

Racing begins 10am, with events held in three engine size classes, with each race consisting of six to eight laps

around a football-size track.

Entry is free. Parking is available in designated nearby fields on Plummers Point Rd, or at Lava East restaurant (with shuttles to the school). Follow the parking marshalls’ directions.

Summer and strawberries in a ‘dessert sandwich’ There is something about harvesting enough strawberries for a decent bowlful that I haven’t quite managed yet.

But with eight new strawberry plants just in, the chances have increased.

Strawberries are a delight to small children and birds, so if you’re going to plant them, a dozen plants

may only be enough for a small household. As usual, the cost of strawberries soars at Christmas time, so get planting now.

Speaking of planting, Another Green World’s rustic seedling stall is open on the corner of Selwyn and Williams streets behind the fire station on Cameron Rd, mostly selling selected herbs and vegetables that

were microgreens but they kept on growing.

Back to the strawberries. As a youngster I can remember devouring them at Christmas time like a special treat with ice cream sprinklings of icing sugar and runny cream.

Homemade shortbread was always on the dessert table; and being an aspiring chef combining the two seemed obvious. This week, I have added a lemon curd that adds a zingy binder to a flavoursome glutenfree shortbread I have perfected.

DESSERT

Strawberry and lemon curd shortbread sandwich Serves 6

2 punnets strawberries

Gluten-free shortbread: Ingredients 230g icing sugar 200g ground almonds 175g Edmonds gluten-free custard powder 200g fine Polenta 300g butter (half-melted and softened)

Method Preheat the oven to 170 degrees Celsius. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl, then mix in the half-melted butter and press into a baking tray.

If the mixture seems too dry, add a few drops of water. Score into squares before baking in oven for about 25 minutes until golden and firm to the touch. Cool in the tin, then place on a wire rack.

Lemon curd:

Ingredients 80g butter 1 cup sugar 2 large eggs 2 large egg yolks ¾ cup lemon juice 1 tsp grated lemon zest

the mixture over a low heat until it looks smooth.

Increase the heat slightly and cook stirring constantly on the bottom of the pot (a rubber scrapper works well). The mixture will thicken in 12-15 minutes. Don’t let the mixture boil. Keep stirring, removing from the heat occasionally also helps. When it leaves a path after a spoon is pulled through the mixture transfer the curd to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap until required.

Method: In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar with an electric mixer for about two minutes. Slowly add eggs and the yolks and beat for one minute. Mix in the lemon juice; the mixture will look curdled, but it will smooth out as it cooks.

There is something rewarding about making your own sauces and creating that perfect dish the family just loves.

My kids have a black board with their favourite dishes and we have set a menu up so they can be assured their favourite dish is cooked again the following week.

Spicy sauce

25 g butter 3 tablespoons tobasco sauce 2 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1/4 cup water

Spicy wings

1 packet of chicken wings Rice bran oil 1/2 cup flour 1 smoked paprika 1/2 cayenne pepper 1 Tablespoon chicken stock

Heat oven on 180degrees... Make the sauce first. Melt butter in a pot; add tobasco sauce, sweet chilli sauce, brown sugar and water still until combined simmer for one minute. For the wings place all the dry ingredients in a plastic bag and coat all the wings.

Place in the fridge for 20 minutes.

Before frying give them a good shake in the bag again.

With the arrival of spring produce there are plenty of fresh options to play with in creating a great dish to wow your family and friends.

Asparagus is always a hit and adds interest to salads, but you need to be quick with the short season passing swiftly.

If you are like me you were probably introduced to this great vegetable out of a can, with the briney soft spears wrapped in white sandwich bread. There could hardly be a worse way to promote this flavoursome treat than in mushy asparagus rolls.

Even though the weather wasn’t co-operating, the sea of pink with all of the smiling, enthusiastic and supportive people made the difference.

With the arrival of those fresh tangy strawberries, now is a great time to introduce one of my favourite cocktail bases – Cointreau.

Chilled Cointreausoaked strawberries are awesome and simple with rich contrasting flavours.

Cointreau was created in France by two brothers using a secret recipe; and it has become one of the most treasured and recognised ingredients in the world for making quality drinks.

Sourcing specific, bitter-sweet oranges from four countries, including Haiti, and using the flavoursome oils from the skins, Cointreau delivers a rich orange liqueur that combines well with all manners of bases like juices, dairy and carbonated drinks.

My favourite Cointreau cocktail is the Japanese slipper – a vigorously shaken mixture of Cointreau, Midori and fresh limes over ice in a whisky glass.

My favourite way of using asparagus is marinating it in olive oil, balsamic vinegar and garlic for 30 minutes, then grill on high for four minutes, rotating spears to avoid charring.

Serve with halved roma tomatoes and lightly grilled halloumi or bocconcini cheese. Season, dress and serve – you will love this delicious salad (other favourites are served with strawberries or drizzled in Hollandaise sauce).

Legendary colourful support It might not be the traditional black and white he normally associates with, but Sir Gordon Tietjens is happy to get his hands colourfully dirty for a ‘legendary cause’ – child cancer.

On Friday, November 22, the Child Cancer Foundation is hosting the inaugural Legends Luncheon – raising funds to support child cancer patients and their families.

And Sir Titch is personally supporting the event, which includes an afternoon of food, entertainment and prized auction items.

The rugby sevens guru let his true colours show when he and six-year-old cancer patient Max Necklen put their artistic skills to work with a series of blue, yellow and red hand-painted artworks to be auctioned off on the day.

Not known for his painting abilities, Sir Titch admits the three pieces are “one of a kind artworks”, as he has never had his hands painted or attempted any painting.

“It was

great to have Max’s little hand in amongst my big two hands.” More than 50 families are currently supported by the Child Cancer Foundation in the Tauranga area, including children receiving treatment, post treatment; and support for bereaved family members.

Child Cancer Foundation fundraising and business development manager Delwynne Hahunga is thrilled to have secured the unique pieces of artwork, with Sir Titch’s hand prints, for the event.

“It’s going to be a very highly sought-after piece of artwork, I’m sure.”

Max’s father Dan Necklen, with wife Alicia and Max’s brothers Finn, three, and Isaac, three months, were also present to share in the paint-filled excitement.

“It’s just really cool because the Child Cancer Foundation has been good to us during the last three years,” says Dan. “It’s just neat we can help in some little way because they [the foundation] are awesome.”

This week offers plenty of chances to try all sorts of activities on or in the water, as part of Sport Bay of Plenty’s Play in the Bay water month promotion. Tasters, for anyone interested in a chance to try an activity, include standup paddle boarding, outrigger canoe, sailing and windsurfing.

Top crafters carve it up for show Tauranga Woodcrafters Guild’s annual exhibition is on next weekend featuring work from some of the best woodcrafters in the world.

About 10 members of the guild are exhibiting their work at Mount Sports Centre in a three-day show with prominent woodcrafter Terry Scott being one of this year’s feature artists. Organiser Roy Tregilgas says Terry is

“very well-known around the world” for his wood turning and carving works.

The second feature artist is club member Jacob Von Holsen, who specialises in scroll saw and marquetry works, and automata wood toys.

Roy has been working with wood for about four years, creating mostly fretwork – an interlaced decorative design carved in wood.

“There are all sorts of things you can do with wood. I like to give an artistic type of finish to it,” says Roy.

This year’s show covers many disciplines with the common core of wood. It can be turned, carved, machined and burned into different shapes and patterns.

The Woodcrafters Show is at Mount Sports Centre, November 15-17 from 10am-4pm.

Demonstrations of wood-turning, carving and scroll saw work, along with trade stalls, will be available. A sausage sizzle and refreshments will also be on offer.

Going digital – TV take back Television goes digital in just a few weeks and people are being encouraged to recycle their old ones at drop-off sites around the Bay of Plenty.

From December 1, television is changing to Freeview, Igloo, or Sky – and about 20 drop-off sites will take back your old television for $5.

Envirohub Bay of Plenty, at Historic Village, has been taking back televisions for about a week. The TV Take Back will continue for another five weeks, says Envirohub BOP team leader Emma van de Molen.

Emma says about 70 old television sets have been recycled at the centre so far.

“The Bay’s maximum capacity for TV Take Backs is 1000,” say Emma.

Once the limit is reached, people can still recycle their old television – but the $5 charge will revert to the transfer station fee of $25. Only television sets can be recycled – “strictly no computer monitors”.

“They don’t have to be in working order, but we can only take whole units, nothing in parts,” says Emma.

Pageant finalists’ moment to shine Tauranga Girls’ College student Jade Graves loves to “capture every moment”.

And on Saturday, the moment she and her boyfriend take to the stage as first-time beauty pageant finalists will be captured by a paparazzi of photographers.

The couple is a finalist in the Miss and Mr Diversity Culture International 2013 pageant which sees 12 women and nine men compete for a top prize.

Born in South Africa, 18-year-old Jade moved to the country about eight years ago and is representing her adopted country as Miss New Zealand.

Jade “loves the outdoors” and entered her first pageant for the opportunity to travel.

“I’m extremely outdoorsy, I love animals, I love taking photos – one of my sayings is capture every moment,” says Jade.

Also having never entered a pageant before is her 19-year-old boyfriend Izaak Crook, who is representing his home country as Mr England.

Izaak was head-hunted by the pageant founder while accompanying his girlfriend on one of her photo shoots.

“At the start we were a bit nervous, but we’re loving it at the moment,” says Jade.

“Everybody’s so nice and welcoming. It’s quite exciting.”

On November 16, at Auckland Town Hall, the couple will have to wow a panel of celebrity judges – including international fashion model Colin Mathura-Jeffree and TV One’s Nothing Trivial actor

Chocolate swimming carnival A new swimming event at Katikati’s Dave Hume Pools this Sunday (November 10), is encouraging youngsters to challenge their personal bests in the water. The Chocolate Carnival begins 9.30am for children age 12 and under, to achieve personal bests, swimming one or three pool lengths with chocolate rewards on offer.

A staggered race will include age-group winners; plus there are two fun relays. Entry forms are at the pools.

Entry (to carnival and pools) is $2 each.

Fundraising concert

Tauranga Central Baptist Church is hosting a concert at 2pm November 16 to raise funds for two freeset projects aimed at getting women out of the sex trade.

Freeset is a Christian business which has purchased four acres in Wellington’s Berhampore, where a weaving unit and training school has been established to help women in the sex trade turn over a new leaf.

Tickets for the variety concert at the church are available at the door for $10.

A weekend of watercraft wonder Cover story Tauranga’s only on-the-water boat show is on this weekend bringing a weekend of watercraft wonder for the whole family.

The Tauranga Boat Expo and On The Water Festival, driven by the Tauranga Marine Industry Association, returns to downtown Tauranga on November 8-10.

Event manager Dahna Jeffares-Bozinovitch says the response from Bay of Plenty businesses has been fantastic and is ensuring a great event for this year.

Tauranga Charity lifting its profile The disabled fishers’ charity Wish 4 Fish is going to be running a food stall and barbecue at the Tauranga Boat Expo and On The Water Festival, all part of the plan to obtain a higher public profile for the registered charity.

Through the support of the Tauranga Marine Industries Association and the Boat Expo, trustee Bryce Dineen says Wish 4 Fish will be operating a food stall, selling white bait fritters, a sausage sizzle, bacon and egg sandwiches and cold drinks.

“We’ve also got our merchandise there, along with our mobile fishing tackle shop,” says Bryce.

The charity is taking over the mobile tackle shop for the summer to provide a source of income and a face out at Papamoa, where the tackle shop is normally situated.

Sealegs on show The unique capabilities of the amphibious Sealegs boat will be on show at the Tauranga Boat Expo and Water Festival, but it will be a 6 metre version – not the 7.7 metre design the Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard is expected to take possession of at the end of the month.

Sealegs are rigid hull inflatables with wheels so they can be driven in and out of the water and across estuaries and mudflats.

The boat is driven by an outboard engine, the wheels by an on board Briggs & Sratton engine via a hydraulic drive.

Bryce started Wish4Fish to help overcome his frustration at trying to go fishing from a chair. But the charity is not just for the wheelchair bound, says Bryce. There

are a lot of people with minor or major disabilities or simply living in rest homes who he believes will benefit from on-going access to the water.

Reminder: Basic boating rules Life jackets: All boats, even dinghies on a flat calm sunny day with just one person on board, must carry life jackets for all people in the boat. Life jackets must be worn in when crossing bars or in rough weather.

The Five Knot Rule: Five knots is about 9km/h or a brisk walking speed. This is the speed all boats must slow to within 200m of the shore, or a moored boat or a person in the water.

Go blue for youth with diabetes Being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when you’re young can turn your life upside down – but Diabetes Help Tauranga Youth is helping children and teens deal with their new condition.

“There are no days off – you’ve got it for life,” says Diabetes Youth Tauranga coordinator Rebecca Ryder, who has a

child with Type 1 diabetes.

The organisation, which supports children and families diagnosed with Type 1 and 2 diabetes, is calling on schools and workplaces to sign up for its Blue Mufti Day fundraiser next week.

Funds raised go towards DHTY’s growing networks of families of those diagnosed, and providing children with confidence-boosting camps, activities and information.

“It’s all about managing your life

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the pancreas can no longer make insulin. “There is no cure and this form cannot currently be prevented,” says Rebecca.

Type 2 is a metabolic disease where the pancreas is making some insulin, but the body cannot use it properly.

and a self-produced anti-bacterial agent called cathelicidin.

Vitamin D governs the production of cathelicidin, which is highly effective against bacterial, viral and fungal infection. Cathelicidin works by breaking down membranes of microbes, effectively killing them.

Research by C Guo et al, in the book ‘Molecular Nutrition and Food Research 2013’, shows combining vitamin D with grape skin antioxidant resveratrol further increases cathelicidin

levels, thus increasing the body’s ability to fight infections.

Ideally, your vitamin D levels should be above 80 nmol/l in winter. The normal range is 50-140 nmol/l. However, many experts believe public recommendations are far too low. Because of the links between many cancers, autoimmune diseases, neurodegenerative and even cardiovascular and mental health issues, I prefer to see people with levels of more than

Fad diets – what to believe It is the time of year when there is a huge push by those promising “unbelievable” weight loss results, using dodgy methods with little to no reliable research to back up their claims.

Yet, how many of us buy into these promises with the hope they will somehow miraculously transform our bodies into what we dream of possessing?

Dispelling myths, created by people trying to push their business in the multi-million dollar weight-loss industry, is becoming a daily chore for those of us who believe in healthy bodies for life – not fast loss at the detriment of their client’s future health.

Restricting diets to only eating a few

food types can result in deficiencies in minerals and vitamins, which are essential for growth, repair and supporting our immune systems.

One claim that aggravates me is to never eat bananas. Bananas are a wonderful pre-packaged food perfect for athletes and exercisers – it provides not only instant energy but many health benefitting antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. Bananas are more energy-dense than many other fruit; and the riper they are, the higher the sugar levels. So those at risk of diabetes should limit their consumption. But for the rest of us, bananas are a great source of potassium, magnesium, manganese, vitamins B2, B3 and B6 – as well as providing about 10 per cent of our daily requirement of fibre.

Free hairdressing enrolments extended Hair to Train’s highly successful hairdressing academy has been given the opportunity by the Government to extend the age bracket from 16-17 year olds to include those aged 18 and 19.

This will allow more school leavers and older students the chance to enrol in a free hairdressing course.

Hair to Train’s general manager Donna Waterson says the NZQA-registered course, currently in its third year, gives students practical, hands-on training and experience – and a career head start – at no cost. “This one-year course allows us to get more young people into higher learning to gain qualifications and succeed with a trade; and then a successful future in employment,” says Donna. “We want to create a generation of people who contribute to the community and this governmentfunded initiative assists us with our vision.”

The start date for the next course intake is February 4, 2014. Applicants gain the certificate in elementary hairdressing skills level 3 and national certificate in salon support level 3, totalling 133 NZQA unit standard credits. “We have two academies with two busy salons,

one located in Tauranga’s CBD and one at The Mount.

We provide amazing support for our students, including a cultural awareness programme and a student counsellor,” says Donna.

“Once finished, they won’t have a huge student loan and they can then either enrol in Hair to Train’s Year 2 programme, to complete their second year of hairdressing, or apply their skills to hairdressing, retail, hospitality or tourism.”

Donna says it’s a fun four-day-a-week course. “Students get to show off their own flair in competitions; and they work on real clients in a real salon, with the full support and training of our highly experienced tutors. Best of all – it’s free.”

The Weekend Sun is profiling some of Tauranga’s historic places dotted around the city. This week reporter Zoe Hunter looks at a house more than 140 years old.

Tauranga resident Jennifer Blakeley-Shugg remembers her mother playing music from the drawing room in her home – named Topcroft – when she was a child.

Her father Reginald Shearman – a town clerk at the Tauranga Borough Council for 40 years – bought the house on Edgecumbe Rd in the 1920s before he married Brenda Mountfort there in 1930. He lived there with Brenda and their three children Jennifer, John and Rodney.

Jennifer remembers her mother’s daily routine of playing music from the drawing room.

“My mother was a concert pianist. She used to sit in the drawing room, where she would play for hours and hours every day.”

When she lived in Topcroft, Jennifer says the house was adorned with “beautiful” wallpaper and five fire places, three of which were brought from Italy.

When her father died in 1952 – and her mother passed in 1990 – Jennifer and her brothers rented the house for about six years before the land was subdivided into about 14 sections.

Jennifer was given some land on the corner of 13th Ave, where she has lived for 40 years. Her brothers were given land next to her plot; and by 1976, Jennifer says all sections were either sold or up for sale.

According to Jennifer and Rodney, the house was moved from Edgecumbe Rd in the late 1980s to its current location on Welcome Bay’s Ranginui Rd. Building of the house was delayed by the New Zealand Wars (known as the Land Wars), until 1870.

Missionary Samuel Clarke built the home, and named it after his ancestral home, Topcroft Hall, in England.

Parents’ daring move

It’s a move many parents wouldn’t dream of. But for Dan and Amba Sanders, shifting their young family to a poverty-stricken area of Cambodia is a vision they can’t wait to come true.

The couple is busy trying to raise $13,000 to travel to the village of Sihanoukville in December where they will volunteer for two weeks, feeding the hungry, caring for the sick and working on the Princess Project – an initiative preventing young girls from being taken into prostitution.

They will take their two young sons, four-year-old Noah and 18-month-old Ziah with them, for a taste of a life in the Southeast Asian country, they hope will become their permanent home in mid-2014.

Amba and Dan’s mission trip is being led by their friends Ben and Cherie McGonagle, who run the Princess Project in Cambodia and have lived with their two sons in the country for seven years.

“The coolest thing is we’ve been offered a chance to move there permanently next year, and work with them on the project,” says Amba.

Actively involved in their home church, Elim Christian Centre, the couple are no strangers to helping others; and the chance to move to Cambodia is too good an opportunity to pass up – despite having a young family.

Angela McKenzie is the curator at Creative Tauranga as well as being a practicing Artist, which ensures she understand the needs of artists and can offer assistance and support, especially for emerging artists.

Angela began her studies in 2008 and completed an Advanced Diploma in Art and Design with Waiariki Institute of Technology. The programme offered a chance to work with highly regarded, award winning tutors who offered new techniques, arts marketing and the chance to dedicate valuable time to building her own particular style. Angela chose to keep developing her practice and enrolled into the Whitecliffe Bachelor of Fine Arts which is taught at Waiariki’s Mokoia Campus in Rotorua. As part of her studies Angela was

required to take part in an internship for professional development and decided Creative Tauranga could provide a wide range of experiences such as working on developing exhibitions, working alongside other artists and writing articles for the Creative Beat magazine.

After finishing her studies, Angela was fortunate to go directly into part time employment and joined the Creative Tauranga team in November 2011 as Gallery Curator and Artist Advisor.

For Angela, having the chance to dedicate four years to art studies has helped her develop a deep connection to her work and a strong dedication to her arts practice.

“To be a committed artist takes an enormous amount

of hard work,” says Angela.

“Not only to be painting or creating work on a daily basis, but also to be actively building your artist profile”.

Angela has continued to create work of a high standard and has taken part in a variety of group exhibitions and had her selected for the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Awards in Whakatane, the Miles Art Awards at the Tauranga Art Gallery and more recently her work was selected for the prestigious New Zealand painters and printmakers awards in Hamilton.

Whatever he does, Len Brown gets my vote for foiling the corrupt and contemptible campaign of destruction against him, by admitting his human frailties and getting on with the job he was elected to do – that takes courage.

It’s worth noting that everyone but Len is claiming victim status – that takes restraint.

All he has to do now is work hard.

I was horrified to read that Tauranga City Council is resorting to felling trees purely to help flush out homeless people in the Mount Drury area.

How short-sighted. Apart from doing nothing to improve the situation of the homeless, the council is going to partially destroy one of the most beautiful areas in the Mount.

These people don’t need punitive measures to make them feel even more uncomfortable than they already feel. They need under-

standing and support from those of us who have had a more fortunate life than they have.

Almost without exception, these people have had a tragic and traumatic life, which has left them feeling hopeless, dispossessed, unloved and unwanted.

What they need is just the opposite. They need to be heard, to be given some hope again, they need some proper shelter, they need to be loved and valued.

The council should be spending their money on this, rather than felling trees at the ratepayers’ expense. As an idea, why don’t various faith groups and other caring citizens of the Tauranga and Mount areas try befriending these people, listen to their story (you can be sure they have one); and maybe shout them a feed and see if they can be helped in any way to be a valued member of society again.

Spend our money helping our homeless

More rental car hoo haa: I had a similar experience with Eurocars in the UK. I booked a Ford Fiesta for 20 days.

We arrived at the rental depot and waited in-queue. A young man seen us. I showed him my paperwork; okay there. He asked me how much traveling we were doing.

I said we were off to Cheshire near Liverpool for a week, up to Scotland, then to the East coast to visit friends, see York; returning

through the Lake District to Cheshire.

He suggested a large car for the extensive distances; so I took a Volkswagen Golf. More fool me, more money to them. During travelling, I checked brake fluid and oil. To my suprise they were low; in a fairly new car with 10 days’ driving.

They topped up the brake fluid but told me the oil was half full.

I checked the oil again - minimum again.

I ended up buying oil for it myself.

Rena museum Turn tragedy into tourist attraction?

Constantly, we hear Tauranga needs more tourist attractions for visitors, and particularly for those visitors arriving by cruise ship.

Why do we not create a maritime museum entitled the Rena Disaster Museum?

The former information centre at Mount Maunganui, now up ‘for lease’, is the perfect location with thousands of foot traffickers passing it’s door off ships. Then there is all of the domestic and international tourists who visit the area.

Schools would find it a valuable learning centre for teaching about the disaster and the environmental issues it has caused.

This building would make a superb site for such a project.

Maritime New Zealand has a complete photographic record of

the Rena disaster and all of the information that goes with it; and no doubt a good many disaster relics. The Rena disaster, I believe, is the second most costly shipping disaster clean-up in the world; the first being the Costa Concordia.

Surely, that in itself written on the building would be sensational enough to pull people through a museum door.

The art gallery could help with layout and display of the photographs and items.

And I am sure there are many big companies in Mount Maunganui, which would be only too willing to sponsor a mounted photograph and an information plaque to go alongside each photograph.

So long as their company name was mentioned on the bottom of

the plaque.

It need only take one full-time person to run the museum, as I am sure there are many suitable, reliable volunteers who would willingly spare a half-day each week to keep the museum manned and operational.

A admission charge of $5 would not be too much as an entry fee.

Souvenir items and books, telling the story of the disaster, could be sold to help with costs.

I can just picture such a museum thriving with a bit of initiative motivation and active participation from forward-thinking people in our community. When the Tauranga Museum is finished, the building could be used for another purpose.

Bee swarm stirs up question of duty I had noticed a swarm of bees on the back of our property that we share with three other neighbours in the same driveway.

I rang Tauranga City Council’s pest control about this matter, as it was urgent with a neighbour allergic to bees and myself having young children living in the houses nearby.

The lady I was talking to on the phone told me they would send someone out to have a look and it would be free. Then I get a phone

call from a person from TCC saying the matter is ours to deal with, as its on private property and we would have to pay for it.

I also received an email on the subject, but it was for wasps - not what we were wanting help with.

I rang the council again about this matter got no joy whatsoever.

I even started ringing around beekeepers and pest control services to get quoted prices for removing the swarm.

In the end we took the matter

into our own hands, when we shouldn’t have had to. Very unhappy residents.

Council responds:

Bee swarms can not be moved unless the swarm has settled onto something. Tauranga City Council will take responsibility for bees that settle on public land.

Our standard advice to people who phone about bees that have settled on private property is that they contact a beekeeper.

Vote now - before the lolly-tossing begins I think all voters need to start making decisions about who they want in parliament after next year’s general election.

While your local MPs may be saying their parties cannot do things for you now – next year they’ll be tossing out the lollies to try and gain your vote.

So don’t be fooled. Vote in candi-

dates according to their merit, their work in the community; and due to their performances and impact in parliament during this term.

And vote in a government who, in your mind, gets the work done – not one that’s just promising goodies because an election is coming up.

John Key and Finance Minister Bill English hinting at a possible election-year sweetener via TV One news this week. How timely.

So come on voters, empower yourselves by making you mind up now - do you want the sweetener or do you want other achievements made by the next government.

Drink drive limit: money-gathering If the progressive lowering of the blood-alcohol level for drivers stopped road deaths; then surely by now there would be no road deaths due to people driving while drunk.

If fining people for doing three kilometres over the limit prevented accidents; then there would be no accidents - that is reality.

Misinterpreting reality is claiming such actions prevent deaths.

If a blood-alcohol level of 80 milligrams to 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood caused people to have accidents then let’s think back to when we were real champions at boozing and there were no actual limits.

Hundreds of thousands of people actually

drove home while drunk after the six o’clock swill and there were very few accidents in those days.

What we need to do is stop the three kilometres over the speed limit; and see it clearly as a money raising exercise which is all it is.

I bet nobody has been killed at 53 km, due to that speed.

I further bet nobody has been killed by someone driving at 103 km, where that speed was the total cause of the crash.

It is the idiots that drive at 140 km and other death-defying speeds that cause the mayhem on our roads.

As for drinking, what we have to do is come up with some way stopping of people

getting behind the wheel when they are over the limit - be it 50 or 1000 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

That alone will stop or lower deaths on the road due to alcohol consumption.

It is not those with such low alcohol levels that cause the carnage on our roads, as in speeding, it those who are four to 10 times over the limit that case the carnage.

An answer may be an identifying mark on a glass, so a barman can refuse to fill a patron’s glass a third time within one hour, and if he does he is charged.

Worse of course tis the level of marijuana and methamphetamine (also known as P), and other drugs in the blood that are smoked or ingested before driving.

What are we going to do about that?

Without clean air to breath, we wouldn’t last five minutes.

Without clean water to drink we wouldn’t last many days, and without good food, we would not live for long.

We are inevitably linked to the environment. Even young children

realise this today. They may not live this century out.

Unless we learn to care for the environment, we could be almost extinct by the end of this century.

Humans need to grasp the importance of the environment. It will only support us as long as we treat it with respect. When my wife first came to New Zealand 50 years ago, people grew all of their own fruit

and vegetables.

Now many young people don’t know how to do that. I have a garden full of those things, and benefit from eating fresh food straight from the garden. I wish to sell my house and garden, but nobody wants the trouble of looking after it. They’d rather play golf, bowls, or go boating and fish.

We need environmental management M Houlding raised several points worth debating on the Green movement and Green politics in last week’s Sun. The Green movement puts the environment first, because without it we will not have a functioning human ecology.

The principle that the environment is subservient to human aims and activities and can look after itself may have applied in a pre-industrial era. But the humancarrying capacity of our planet is

now an issue of urgent concern.

The Green position on energy is that it should be sustainable and renewable. Coal and nuclear are strenuously opposed.

With large-scale solar energy now within our grasp, along with geothermal and tidal power, further hydro development and even wind power are becoming less appropriate for energy generation.

As a practitioner and teacher of environmental management with 30 years of experience both locally

and internationally, I offered skills and experience that are rarely available in local politics. Environmental management is a key role of regional council.

Had I been elected to Bay of Plenty’s regional council, I would have expanded the skill set around that table. Perhaps even M Houlding’s mokopuna (children) would have benefitted from my contribution.

Under the Local Government Information and Meetings Act

council must let the community know what is going to be discussed at a meeting.

“At the open forum nobody knows, often, what is going to be discussed,” says Stuart in the article. “There’s a strong argument to say that if you have that then people don’t know under the offi-

cial information act what’s going to be said at a meeting”.

The same principle applies to all the ‘workshop’ meetings, which previously have never been publicly advertised.

So I expect in the future the public will be notified about them.

New blood-alcohol cap: Proclaim your support Great news. The law is taking another crazy boy racer driver off our roads and going to crush his car.

I raise this issue, as the Sensible Sentencing Trust has just released NZ Statistics regarding the drunks driving on our roads.

For instance, in 1960 there were 707 alcohol-related car crashes on NZ roads,. None caused death, and the population was 2.4 million.

In 2013 there were 35,040 alcohol-related car crashes; 85 caused death, and the population is 4.4 million.

You can help reduce the carnage on our roads by picking up your pen and writing to the Prime Minister.

Tell him you support his government’s move to lower the blood-alcohol limit from 80 to 50 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood for drivers aged over 20, which is before parliament now. wwThe change is approved by cabinet and could be law by early next year. No honour: How does Prime Minister John

Key justify allowing ‘Sir’ Douglas Graham to retain his title? Surely this devalues the meaning of such an honour? It’s a perfect example of the curate’s egg adage.

But John maintains weakly Douglas’ dishonesty refers to a specific situation. Presumably his nasty part has nothing to do with the “rest” of his character? Then John compounds it by weakly adding ‘Sir’ Douglas may choose not to use the title. And that is supposed to be reassuring.

It’s official. This weekend Soundtree Live is up and running again.

THIS IS THE END Starring: Seth Rogan, Jay Baruchel, James Franco - Dir: Evan Goldberg I’m always up for a good stoner comedy, and with the cast and writers of This Is The End being the current reigning champions of stoner comedy, I found this to be a whole bunch of fun.

Sure, it’s not a movie for everyone. It’s not even really that wonderful in the great scheme of things – Citizen Kane this ain’t. But I laughed a lot and sometimes that’s all you want from 90 minutes in front of the box on a rainy night.

Problems come with the plot, which is insistently over-complicated. Meaning the first half-hour is fine, the last half-hour is fine; but the middle hour wanders round trying to make sense. There are also – fatally – some tonal misjudgements, which will alarm kids.

Despicable Me 2 is hardly worth reviewing. If you liked the first one you’ll like this one.

Clearly, market research showed the small yellow ‘minions’ are the thing kids like most, so there are even more of them here. ‘Hero’ Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), meanwhile, isn’t as nasty as he once was, which makes him less fun. It’s about as sentimental as first time out. Actually, it’s just more of the same. Of course the animation’s good.

Of course there are funny bits. Of course it all ends happily.

Danny McBride, Jonah Hill and Emma Watson are among the survivors, riffing away on parodies of their ‘real life’ characters, while Craig Robinson has the honour of starring in both this and Rapture-Palooza.

Some of it works, some doesn’t; don’t watch if you’re easily offended.

Shower door installer Danny DeVito is our initial narrator but the baton is passed as things progress. There’s Rufus Sewell’s cop on the lam, his partner Robert Forster, Carla Gugino’s cocktail singer, Rosario Dawson’s housemaid, Kevin Connolly’s gambling guitarist, more dames and mobsters, and a lashing of hard-boiled old Hollywood dialogue. A half-homage, half-affectionate reinvention, this is sharp, witty, melodramatic stuff, revelling in its very artificiality. I liked it a lot.

All Superheroes Must Die . Cool title I thought. And a cool cover, all moody night-time skyscrapers and helicopters. Then comes an introduction from writer/director/ producer/editor/star Jason Trost, who explains they made the film in two weeks for $20,000; and that there are no skyscrapers or helicopters – that was just to get people to watch it.

Okay. So the story has four estranged superheroes (without superpowers), kidnapped and deposited in a depopulated small town by their old nemesis, who forces them to play bizarre deadly ‘games’. It very geeky stuff, aimed clearly at those who indulge in philosophical discussions about the minutiae of superhero lore.

Great Greerton pool party Popular cellists star in final concert

If you’re looking for a family fun day out – without breaking the bank – then Greerton Aquatic and Leisure Centre is the place to be this Sunday (November 10).

From 1pm to 4pm, the facility is hosting its second annual Great Greerton Pool Party, with entry prices set with affordability in mind. All swimmers will pay $2 to enter and a spectators’ fee is just 50 cents.

Those aged under two will be given a free swim nappy ,as part of their entry fee.

On-site will be a giant inflatable; plus the Mai FM Street team will be running games and firing up their

barbecue with free sausages available. The Mai FM team has worked together with the Greerton management team to offer some great prizes, but you must be on-site when the winners are drawn.

To manage the anticipated number of party-goers, tickets to the pool party will be sold from 12.30pm Sunday, with the party starting 1pm. Normal pool supervision rules will apply; and the management team has advised once the facility reaches capacity, they will unfortunately need to restrict access.

Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s final concert for 2013 features the music of Elgar and Mendelssohn.

The programme commences with Sergei Rachmaninov’s Prelude in D Major for piano – arranged for orchestra

by Music Director/Conductor Justus Rozemond.

Elgar’s Enigma Variations spring to mind together with his equally famous Cello Concerto written in 1919. Possibly the best of his late works, it is an elegiac, strongly personal work with hauntingly beautiful themes. The Concerto was made famous by the late Jacqueline du Pre. Guest soloist for this popular work is Israeli born cellist Inbal Megiddo whose performances around the world have drawn high acclaim. Her playing is described as “superb and virtuosic” and

“she is an extremely talented, very musical musician”.

Inbal is head of the cello studies at the New Zealand School of Music.

Felix Mendelssohn wrote the wellknown Fingal’s Cave (Hebrides Overture). He has also written some memorable choral works such as St Paul and Elijah and his most notable work The Dream of Gerontius. For this concert the Tauranga Civic Choir and Bay of Plenty Symphonia combine to present Symphony No. II, Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise). A four movement work, the three shorter ones are followed by the longer choral movement.

Jayne Tankersley and Elaine Wogan (sopranos) and Chase Douglas (tenor) are the soloists in this beautiful choral section.

Scottish collaboration performs Direct from triumphant Asian and Chinese performances, Celine and Samantha Toner are to perform songs from their debut album ‘Alba to Aotearoa’.

Community based scheme Turning ‘ugly ducklings’ into swans Ahousing concerted push to reduce stress levels Like many throughout the country, I watched the final of ‘The Block’ recently.

What a fantastic amount of work has gone into amazing transformations. Obviously, that is the purpose of the programme. To take four ugly ducklings and turn them into swans.

But, the big thing to take out of the results for me is the huge underlying costs of the programme.

While much of the furnishings and renovation materials I assume are donated to increase awareness of supplier brands (and I do know who the major sponsors were), there are still basic costs to be recovered. Including land, the do-up house and its re-siting, labour, professional advice and materials and media to be paid for.

Resulting in high reserves being set…meaning that for ‘The Boys’ and Loz and Tom the gains were possibly less than they expected.

Taking a quick look at land values at 1 Eversleigh Rd in the Belmont area, it seems the land values are above $400,000 for each site. And those values were probably in place before TV3 bought the location.

So, before they start that is a big cost to recover.

Take a look at how well they all did. Four houses sold under the hammer at auction on the night. All above $900,000.

But here’s the big thing. What stood them out from all other real estate competition throughout Auckland in this period? Massive promotion.

The average audience for the first two weeks was 374,068 viewers. They ran two days of open homes (October 19-20) and had crowd management. You can go online and see if you can spot yourself among the viewers. Talk about high profile marketing.

The National Business Review website advises that more than 2.95 million viewers have tuned into the series so far this year, with an average audience per episode of 465,200 viewers.

So what does this success tell me? Two things. Buy in Tauranga where you can find an affordable starting point.

‘The Block’ contestants did extreme makeovers (with professional help) in 10 weeks. Is time to challenge your friends to run your own version of ‘The Block’? Challenge your real estate professional salesperson to find the site – then promote, promote, promote.

Housing Minister Nick announced this week a further $3.5million of funding for community social housing provider Accessible Properties to build a total of 20 more homes in Wellington, Tauranga and Hamilton.

Tauranga will receive four new homes to be built in Otumoetai with an expected completion date of October 2014.

Accessible Properties already boasts four houses in Landscape Road, Otumoetai with another five nearing completion in Hynds Road, Greerton.

Accessible Properties general manager Andrew Wilson is delighted to expand their reach within Tauranga after targeting the city – along with Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton – as being highly stressed in terms of affordable housing.

But he admits there is still more that can be achieved to alleviate the problem in the highlighted areas.

“We are pleased with what we have done. There is a lot more to be done, but it’s a start.

“We are trying to put them in places throughout the whole community. They need to be near public transport routes, near shops and easily accessible and user-friendly.”

Andrew says the houses will not stray far from the standard two bedroom layout, which is wheelchair-accessible after it was discovered there is a critical shortage of local housing suited for people with disabilities.

Nick says the Government is focussing on growing the community social housing sector to support families in need, as well as addressing the root causes of housing affordability.

“We are taking action on a range of fronts including freeing up land supply, reforming the RMA, reigning in council development charges, keeping interest rates lower for longer, scrutinising building material costs, investing in skills and productivity, and supporting first home buyers through changes to Welcome Home Loans and the KiwiSaver First Home Deposit Subsidy.”

“The Government is keen to grow the community social housing sector as we recognise their [Accessible Properties] ability to provide a good quality, low-cost housing service, as well as providing access to comprehensive support services for their tenants.”

Venus is the brightest and last of the trio to set, and it travels through the constellation of Scorpio as the month progresses. Scorpio is an easily identifiable constellation with three stars forming the pincers, and a series of stars tracing its curling, barbed tail. Scorpio’s tail is the ‘fish-hook’ according to Maori lore that snagged the North Island. The bright reddish cast star at its heart is Antares. It’s a super-giant star and a heavyweight within our own galaxy, with a radius of more than 850 times that of our own sun. Its actual luminosity is about 10,000 times that of our sun, but handicapped by its distance of 550 light years, is ranked the 16th apparent brightest star of our night.

The Southern Cross constellation (or Crux) dances around the southwestern horizon, marked by the two ‘pointer’ stars Alpha Centauri (or Rigil Kentaurus) and Beta Centauri (or Hadar). Both systems are binary stars and Alpha Centauri (the top pointer) is the closest naked eye star and 4.3 light years away from us. By comparison, Beta Centauri, a vastly more luminous blue giant, is 525 light years away.

Canopus, the second brightest star of our night sky, skirts the southern horizon.

One light year is the distance light travels in one year through a vacuum. This is approximately 9.5 trillion km, equating to 300,000 km per second.

Light from the sun takes about eight minutes to reach us, while reflected moonlight takes about one second.

Later this year we are at odds on being able to witness another brilliant comet. Come November, comet ISON may give us a once in a lifetime show, when it will probably become the brightest object in the night sky, clearly observable by the naked eye. As it swings by in a sun-grazing pass, it should brighten by an inverse power to its distance from the sun, and acquire an absolutely spectacular tail.

Can religion get ‘sick’?

Sometimes, we read of people with religious convictions who behave strangely.

Do you remember a group of Christians, who were convinced the world was about to end and prepared for this by living on a mountain waiting for Jesus to come and take them away from this world? Or much worse, religious people who in the name of a loving God slaughter and kill innocent people?

So how does religion get sick? And how do we Christians know our own faith isn’t actually distorting us, and is really making life more difficult for us and others?

Good question. In recent years, much thought has been given to the place of religious faith as an enhancer of healing and spiritual growth of people.

Spiritual health and mental health are inseparably related. There’s that famous quote from the late Dr Karl Menninger: “The manner in which a person utilises their religion – to enrich or ennoble their lives or to excuse selfishness and cruelty, or to rationalise delusions, or to clothe themselves in a comforting illusion – is a commentary on their state of mental health”.

Sadly, religion sometimes is used to hurt rather than to heal, to control rather than to set free. Such religion can be described as ‘sick’.

Any group of Christians or church concerned to address this issue head on might value the book ‘The Mental Health Ministry of the Local Church’ by Dr Howard Clinebell. Howard was professor of pastoral counselling at the School of Theology, Claremont, California.

This old volume, still a good resource, lists questions to test for healthy religion, such as this one: Does a particular form of religious thought and practice build bridges or barriers between people?

What religion does to relationships is revealing.

Does it isolate one group from another, or does it bring them into a warm sense of belonging together?

Howard lists many other questions to ponder, enabling thoughtful people to test if their religious faith is healthy or not.

A useful guide to an important question.

Understanding Liberation that empowers our fulfulment is the key Somebody once said: “Any fool can know. The point is to understand”.

Understanding, when it comes to spiritual things, isn’t always easy or obvious, but it is important.

Proverbs says such things as: “He who cherishes understanding prospers”, and: “Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding”.

We are half-way through a night service series at City Church Tauranga, in which we address seven key topics of understanding.

We have looked at Heaven and Hell; theories of creation and evolution; the reality of God, and a number of other topics.

All of these presentations have been designed to help us better understand ourselves, better understand God, and better understand the world we live in.

It’s great to explore these topics in our attempt to understand – not only for the answers we find, but for the conversation, discussion and revelation that become part of the journey while searching for answers.

We don’t know everything about God, but we can seek to understand Him and grow closer as a result. If you have questions you don’t know the answer to, by all means, ask, seek and begin a discussion.

Recently, Bay Bible Fellowship has been studying the book of Joshua. As expected, the lessons have been extremely relevant. Lessons like putting God first, before all other pleasures; being courageously strong at doing the right things in God’s eyes; working together in unity for the Lord’s glory, and other’s benefit; and obedience to God, even at the expense of personal popularity.

God instructed the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, to “help your brothers until the Lord gives them rest” (Joshua 1:12-15).

As in all relationships, particularly family ones, humility builds strong, supportive, loving ties between people – irrespective of culture, or social status. So it is within the church. When we surrender our passions, dreams, aspirations and beliefs to the rulership of Jesus Christ,
