This is despite repeated calls from the opposition parties for him to front up, as the man in charge, and grovel for everything and anything that has gone amiss in the last century, ranging from the poor showing of our cricketers to the sad ending of ‘Marley & Me’.

Lately he’s been expected to clean up the mess left by others, such as dodgy email interceptions, poor dairy hygiene and Peter Dunne turning up with a crooked bowtie.

The Prime Minister is standing firm in his belief that he’s not to blame.

“I’m not responsible for Justin Bieber’s fringe. Nor will I say sorry for it. Do I look like a hairdresser?” he is rumoured to have stated, in an email that would have been intercepted by the RR hacking team, if we had one.

Ducking for cover

Mr Key has also ducked for cover, claiming he had nothing to do with the death of Phar Lap. “I wasn’t even born when the horse died,” Mr Key probably would have said, if we asked.

The Green Party aren’t taking it lying down, seeking an apology from Mr Key for the invasion of France last century and the diminishing amount of jam in the middle of Shrewsburys.

Not letting up

Andrea Vance is not letting up either, saying she’s damn angry that her flat white was tepid on Tuesday morning and is expecting a Ministerial Apology for it.

The Prime Minister’s office however poured cold water on the idea of anyone saying sorry.

Nor does he feel any remorse for the infamous three-way handshake at the end of the Rugby World Cup. He did say on radio it was “bollocks” and “that Frenchman came down on top”. (Really, he said that, we didn’t make that up.)

Mr Key is also denying responsibility for putting the Bomp in the bomp, bah bomp, bah bomp or the Ram in the rama lama ding dong.

“The bomps and the rams were instigated during

the Clark administration,” Mr Key is likely to have responded. RR research backs this up, our team discovering that the ding dong was clearly Trevor Mallard.

Mr Key is emphatic he will not be apologising to distressed cat owners, either: “I did not Let the Dogs Out.” In other news, the US is on a terrorist high alert this week. It’s thought Al Qaeda have given up on explosives and pressure cookers, instead focussing on a new way to bring a country to its knees.

Crippling a nation

They’re using dirty pipes. After seeing New Zealand’s export reputation ruined over night, they figure it’s a more effective way to cripple a nation, economically, than simply blowing up a few citizens randomly. Word on the street is, there’s a lucrative market for failed dairy technicians with lacking hygiene standards, retraining as terrorists operating under the guise of dodgy plumbers.

US marshall turned terrorist hunter, Willie Fawcett, says they’re determined to flush out the dirty pipe perpetrators.

Meanwhile RR researchers have measured the pureness of New Zealand after the discovery of a dirty pipe and declared the country is now 98 per cent pure.

We expect the lost two per cent to be restored as soon as the pipe is dealt with, although the pending visit of Jon Bon Jovi may claim a percentage or two of the nation’s net purity ratings.

Parting Shot

In a surprising turn of events, Australia is considering coming clean on some of the Kiwi treasures it has laid claim to over the years. We have unconfirmed reports that the Aussies are thinking of offering us back ownership of the Pavlova, Russell Crowe, Phar Lap (the horse Key denies killing) and Crowded House… if we’ll take Rolf Harris.

Family fun day Rain or shine – Whakamarama School’s annual four-day possum hunt is on this week, ending with a Family Fun Day on Sunday.

The fun day from 10am is the school’s main fundraiser and includes the hunt’s prizegiving at 1pm, along with plenty of food, drink, childrens’ activities and an auction. Organiser Karla Pennell says if the weather is fine there will be digger rides, a go-kart course, horse riding, a bouncy castle, and a silent auction with prizes of more than $3000.

“We are praying for good weather, but if it is dodgy weather next weekend we will relocate inside the Whakamarama Hall opposite our school.”

Karla hopes to raise as much money as possible for the tiny 40-student school which was established in 1914.

Ian’s moving on After spending nearly one-third of his life on the Bay of Plenty Regional Council from its beginning in 1989 - Katikati farmer Ian Noble is not seeking reelection in October.

The 75-year-old has been a regional councillor for 24 years – a job he fell into after being Federated Farmers Bay of Plenty provincial president for five years.

“A group of local people said to Joyce and I: ‘You should stand in the Regional Council because you have some experience in these things’. I couldn’t think of a compelling reason to turn them down,” says Ian. The same people convinced Ian to stand for Western Bay of Plenty District Council – so he was elected to both councils, serving one term as both a Western Bay and Bay of Plenty Regional councillor.

“That was a significant learning

curve. The ways of council are different from anything else you will find in the world.”

Merging 25 organisations, Ian says the council’s introduction brought challenging times.

“A lot of different, diverse organisations were all lumped together.

A lot of elected groups were closed and responsibility was given to this council, so first-term decision making was very significant.”

By 1992, Ian says the Minister of Local Government decided he didn’t like double-dippers – so Ian decided to stay with the Regional Council, “and I’m very grateful for the many people who have supported me, and cheered and encouraged me over the years”.

Ian’s chaired Operations and Rural Services, Regulation and Resource Monitoring, Strategic Policy and Finance, and Governance committees in his time.

He’s also a Rotarian, former Dairy Suppliers’ representative and a New Zealand arbitrator for Ministry of Economic Develop-

ment on trees and powerlines legislation for 23 years.

Ian came to understand the Resource Management Act and the process of hearings. “It has been a captivating, rewarding journey for me.”

He’s now stepping back “because I just don’t want to have my life run by a diary” – and hopes to see fresh ideas on council with the Government signalling changes are ahead.

“My hope is this can lead to greater efficiencies and opportunities for local participation and involvement.

“It’s [also] an opportune time for a new dynamics with new people and new vision – not shackled by the past.”

Ian is looking forward to spending more time with his family.

“Joyce and the family have been amazingly supportive, as have numbers of great people. However, I feel it is time to move on, to have my own time and not such a commitment.”

Pig owner riled at dog attacks

A Te Puke orchardist is fed up with having his animals attacked by his neighbour’s dogs and is now threatening to take matters into his own hands.

Tony Erni owns a 5.7hectare kiwifruit orchard in Te Tumu Road where he houses chickens, ducks, a dog called Ruby and three pigs.

For the last year he has been battling to keep his neighbour’s four dogs out of his property after he says they fatally attacked his pigs.

“I have chased them off my property so many times. They mauled my first lot of pigs last year.

They ripped their ears and face and they had to be put down.

“I got a second lot of pigs on Friday and on Saturday the dogs were in the pen again attacking them.”

Te Puke Community Constable Taiwhai Schuster is aware of Tony’s situation and says he is within his rights to shoot the dogs if they attack the stock. Read more on sunlive.

Pair jailed for carjacking

A man and woman who carjacked a vehicle from a man in a Tauranga City carpark and crashed it during a getaway have been jailed this week.

Teepee Snow Laison, 34, is sentenced to three years’ jail, and Conrad Oscar Rewita, 30, received a jail term of four years, six months from Judge Thomas Ingram in Tauranga District Court.

The pair from Auckland earlier pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery charges after they threatened three people with bottles as they attempted to get into their car parked in the Kingsview Apartments’ carpark in the early hours of May 10 this year.

Rewita and Laison stole the 1999 Toyota Corolla.

Rewita then drove down the wrong side of Cameron Road at a speed greater than 80km/h, before crashing the car into a lamp post, putting Laison in hospital for six days.

Superette robbery: man arrested

A 23-year-old man has been arrested for the attempted armed robbery of the Summit Superette.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner says the Tauranga man was arrested on Wednesday night in connection with the attempted robbery on Waihi Road.

He was due to appear in Tauranga District Court on Thursday charged with assault with intent to rob.

At around 6.45am on Friday, August 2 a man walked into the superette armed with a pistol and a knife. He approached the counter when police say the shopkeeper took out a hockey stick and chased the man out of the store towards Brookfield.

The man was arrested with help from the public through police’s anonymous Crimestoppers line.

Crash stalls traffic at Te Puna

A multiple vehicle crash where a light utility truck and trailer jack-knifed stalled traffic along State Highway 2 this week.

Police were called to the crash involving two trucks and two other vehicles on the highway at its intersection with Loop Road at 3.15pm on Wednesday.

Police say a truck heading to Tauranga crossed the centreline clipping the trailer of a light truck causing it to jack-knife. Two other cars then collided in an attempt to avoid the crash.

Traffic was held up along the highway during school closing time for more than an hour.

Technology-savvy dogs Man’s best friend is taking on the digital frontier thanks to a spike in online Bay of Plenty dog registrations, according to latest statistics.

Annual dog registrations closed last week in the Bay of Plenty with both Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council reporting an increase in compliance for the discounted rates.

Tauranga City Council recorded an increase of 300 registrations on last year’s figures, while the Western Bay is also slightly ahead from 12 months ago.

It is believed the spike is on the back of both councils looking to integrate further payment options, particularly online.

Starting this year Western Bay is running an online registration service, while Tauranga City sits just behind with online credit card options.

Dogs are required to be registered each year from three months old, with registration years running from July 1 to June 30 the following year.

“I am pretty pleased with that actually. It’s about 300 ahead of last year.”

Western Bay of Plenty District Council animal services leader Andrew Hope says during their discounted period (ending 1 August) 7163 dogs were registered out of 8183 on the council’s database – a total of 87.5 per cent.

Both men agree the spike is thanks to a larger online presence which simplifies registrations for owners.

Andrew says the online approach is paying dividends with owners living out of town.

“That saves people coming in to the offices, especially rural people if they can’t get in between eight and five Monday to Friday.”

By going online, Western Bay dog owners can take advantage of a discounted $67 for a de-sexed dog and standard rate of $77.

Following the cut-off date prices are raised to $110 and $115.

TCC is looking to install the same online registration process.

In Tauranga City, Brent says the increase is coming from improving public awareness, along with harsher penalties on unregistered dogs. If found unregistered, the dog owners must pay a hefty $300 fine on top of the $102 registration fee.

Norfolk pines in a serious condition A number of Mount Maunganui’s iconic Norfolk pines are sick and may be dying, it was revealed this week.

Two of the trees on Marine Parade have been struck with a mystery illness and more in Pilot Bay are showing signs of infection, says city arborist Richard Conning.

The worst affected Marine Parade trees are receiving nutrient doses to try and boost their immune systems, says Richard. The mystery ailment comes on the heels

of the summer drought, which hit the trees hard. Most of the pines recovered

by April, but some may have succumbed to a mystery pathogen in their weakened state, he says.

“The drought that we had was pretty severe. When a person gets run down they are subject to ailments, it’s the same thing with trees.

“They got run down by the drought and that lets the pathogen, whatever it is, have more of an effect on the tree.

“We (will) work hard to not lose them because they are such a landscape feature for the area.”

Rotorua-based Scion Research is analysing samples of foliage roots and soil from the trees to try and identify the organism causing the ailment.

Richard believes the trees are sick and not poisoned.

“I haven’t seen anything that would indicate there is poisoning, like drill holes or dead grass round the base of the trees.”

The trees are showing varying degrees

of severity, he says.

Council staff say one of the Marine Parade Norfolk Pines is in critical condition and arborists are fearful it won’t pull through.

The trees along the beachfront are estimated to be 50-60 years old and are expected to live another 60 years.

Papamoa teacher Monique Storey uses her new app to control classroom noise.

Last week, after six months of after-hours and weekend work squeezed in around their teaching roles at Te Akau ki Papamoa School, the husband and wife team’s efforts has paid off. The couple has released their iPad and smartphone app to encourage pupils to control their classroom noise to help maximise concentration.

The software application ‘Silent Light’ helps students monitor and adjust their own noise levels with the use of a traffic light system. It sees lights on the screen change colour when noise moves above pre-set levels – and rewards pupils with points for achieving their goal.

“We wanted the onus to be on the kids to self-manage [their

Last year he developed his first educational app to help children with Down syndrome learn to read, which has been delighted with positive response from teachers around the Bay and the world.

Glen’s Year 5-6 class and Monique’s Year 4 class have been the main guinea pigs in their new app’s development, giving them feedback on how to improve it when they trialled it in the classroom.

“The thing that really satisfies us is hearing other teachers tell us how it’s helping make a real difference for them.”

Pupils have responded well to the app, which is helping them in their

own classes – and Glen believes we will see many more educational apps enter the classroom “because technology is their world”.

The couple is delighted with the response, including high praise from technology and education blogs – but Glen says they are “not making squillions” from it.

Already they have a long list of ideas for the next apps they could develop, and Glen says the hardest part is choosing the best one.

“It needs to be something that you use every day and makes us more effective. We just want to make the world a tiny, little bit better.”

Green screens Emma Heke and her seven-year-old son Connor created ‘Our Green Roadie’.

An independent film rapidly gaining Kiwi cult status as it sweeps the nation will premier in Tauranga next week.

‘Our Green Roadie’, a documentary made my Nelson mum Emma Heke and her seven-year-old son Connor, features two Tauranga families and will premiere at Wesley Methodist Church on Wednesday, August 14.

The film involved 70 families from throughout the country (with 50 making it to the film’s final cut), who lead eco-conscious and economically viable businesses and lifestyles.

Emma hopes to showcase the diversity of ‘green enterprises’ which the families are engaged in.

“We aim to dispel myths about green living and business, revive our entrepreneurial Kiwi ‘can do’ attitudes and create a heartening documentary that encourages us all to live our dreams for a better future.”

Papamoa family, the Powells, captured Emma’s attention with their habit of leasing lifestyle blocks long-term and living mainly off the food they grow on them.

Jane Powell says renting, rather than purchasing the land, allows the family to kick start their lifestyle each time they move.

“For us, to go out and buy a property and do what we’re doing here – it’s a huge cost. Here we were able to expand on what was here already and do it right there and then.”

Living in Papamoa for more than four years, the Powells have their own milking cows, which they make butter and cheese from. They also have chickens and their own vegetable gardens. “We’re relatively self-sufficient in food.”

Jane says the sustainable lifestyle isn’t time consuming or difficult, rather it’s just about adapting to a routine.

“It’s just our way of life. Some people get up and do yoga every morning. [My husband] Kevin gets up and hand milks the cows.”

Jane is thrilled with Emma’s film and says it beautifully shows off the benefits of ‘green’ living.

“It’s really great. There is some amazing footage in there.”

Clark talks on building a better world Challenges don’t come much bigger – but almost 600 Tauranga residents left Baycourt on Wednesday knowing they too could play a little part in making the world a better place.

Former Prime Minister Helen Clark told everyone who packed the theatre to hear about her role as United Nations Development Programme administrator, that everyone can do something to help tackle the big issues.

She told The Weekend Sun she was encouraged by the interest New Zealanders were showing with sell-out audiences for her talks around the country, saying she got the

impression that Kiwis are “hungry for substance and serious debate” on the big issue of sustainable global development and climate change.

“I think often, at the individual level, the challenge is so huge you can think ‘what can I do to help?

Maybe I’m just better off going surfing or playing golf ’.

“My advice is that you need to break these things down so everyone feels they can play a part. Whether it’s advocating action through your Twitter or Facebook accounts, or raising awareness on an issue – everyone can play a part.”

Fishers strongly rejecting snapper proposals Passionate Bay fishers are failing to fall hook, line and sinker for the Government’s proposed snapper quota changes following this week’s public meeting.

About 250 people attended Tuesday night’s meeting, held by LegaSea, at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club. The aim was to explain the state of snapper stock in the Bay along with Government proposals to lower the recreational snapper fishing limits.

LegaSea, the fundraising advocacy arm of the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council, is holding the meetings following the Ministry for Primary Industries initial paper outlining three options for the Snapper 1 area.

According to MPI, proposed recreational options include reducing bag limits from nine to three, increasing the minimum legal size from 27cm to 35cm, or opting for a combination of the two.

LegaSea strategist Scott Macindoe says it was a “definitive no” from the attentive crowd this week, with issues surrounding the proposals summarised with two simple questions and resounding answers. “‘Hands up those who will conserve fishing for increasing exports?’

Not a hand in the room. “‘Hands up those who are willing to conserve fish to provide for the reasonable foreseeable needs of future generations?’ Everyone.”

Scott says the proposals are one-

sided and pre meditated and the aim should be conserving snapper for future generations, rather than see the conservation efforts of recreational fishermen swallowed up by commercial operations.

“We are rejecting all of the proposals. They are all based on squeezing the public into a quota which they call a proportion.”

Meeting attendees are encouraged to make a submission on the paper

by August 23, adding to the 14,000 strong response already recorded by LegaSea. “This is an opportunity for people to come together and speak up. Be part of a growing voice for public interest.”

Trusting their gut instinct Trusting your gut instinct is the number one way to prevent crime in your neighbourhood, says Tauranga Neighbourhood Support project manager Carol Lyons.

Carol has been the project manager since March and has managed to get area co-ordinators for the Matua, Brookfield and Avenue areas.

She is still looking for people to set up support groups in Bethlehem, Bellevue and Tauranga Central.

“Neighbourhood Support is more than just crime prevention, it’s about making friends with our neighbours and being involved in the community.

By getting to know the people in your community you will be able to tell the difference if a stranger is wondering in somebody’s property or not.”

In the last six months, there have been 747 reported burglaries in the Western Bay of Neighbourhood Support projects manager Carol Lyons says neighbourhood support is all about getting to know you neighbours.

Plenty, with 595 of those being break-ins, according to figures from Western Bay of Plenty Police.

From July 1, 2012, to June 30, 2013, there were 1658 reported break-ins.

Carol says prevention is the key to tackling crime in the community.

“One of the things I have heard a lot from people, who have just joined neighbourhood support, is that they didn’t know they could ring police and report suspicious activity in their area.

“If you see someone walking in your neighbour’s property, and you think they should not be there, call 111.”

The benefits of being in a Neighbourhood Support Group are more than just preventing crime, says Carol.

She says people develop friendships with others, who they may have lived next to for 20 years but have never gotten to know.

“It’s about looking after one another. If someone wants to start a group up in their area we encourage them to start with a small group.

“We give them pamphlets and signs they can put up in their neighbourhood; and people receive a fortnightly update from their community constable about what is happening in their area. It really empowers people to know what is happening where they live.”

Carol says if people feel empowered, they are more likely to report suspicious behaviour.

She says if police know about a suspected criminal act, then they can do something to prevent it, as opposed to dealing with the aftermath.

Bay thieves forfeit millions Bay of Plenty police have seized $3.4million worth of assets from thieves and other convicted criminals in the last two and half years.

Since the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act took effect in December, 2009 about $29 million worth of property, cash and vehicles have been seized nationwide.

The Bay of Plenty has the second highest value of assets forfeited, behind only the Waikato where police have taken $7.4million worth.

Between March 2010 and July 2011, Western Bay of Plenty Police seized 11 motor vehicles and more than $38,000 in cash from Tauranga patched Black Power member Tai Rewita.

The seizure was made after the gang leader had a $240,000 profit forfeiture judgement made against him.

Detective Inspector Tim Anderson says the judgement was significant because it was made despite Rewita being acquitted of drug charges.

“He was subsequently convicted on later drug charges, but the forfeiture order on his cars and cash was made before that conviction was handed down.

Everybody’s keen to have their say At full council we had a speaker in the public forum give us his perspective on tagging problems at Merivale. It was quite a different view from what elected members understood the situation to be.

I mention this here because, be it right or wrong, he was able to have his say in public of something that concerned him. There is a public forum slot at the beginning of most committee meetings that is available to anyone for a 10 minute dissertation.

It’s an opportunity that is getting more uptake as it becomes more widely known.

Boscabel subdivision up Ohauiti Rd has applied to join council’s water supply service.

When the subdivision was allowed as a rural/residential development there was no reservoir high enough to get water pressure to the 77 lots.

Fast forward 20 years or so and now there is such a reservoir. We are willing and able to take on this extra supply, provided that it can be done fairly on a cost-neutral basis to existing ratepayers and Boscabel residents.

Unfortunately, one on-going issue is the reticulation system within the subdivision was not built compliant to the city specifications back then, and we will need to make allowance for upgrading. It’s a complex matter and to be fair to everyone we have had a confidential workshop, where all issues were discussed in a full and frank manner.

Prompting long speeches

Obviously, there’s an election in the offing, so the complicated matter of siting an extra pedestrian crossing on the corner of The Mall and Adams Ave at Pilot Bay prompted some lengthy speeches and questions.

Oh dear. It looks a sensible addition, especially given that the speed limit along there is 30km/h.

By the way, doesn’t the currently under-construction boardwalk along Pilot Bay really look the part. Remember the hoo-hah when council built the walkway in front of the motor camp on the ocean beach. Now there would be a riot if someone tried to take it out. The Pilot Bay walkway will be another worthy addition when it’s completed.

Thanks to the Port of Tauranga which enabled the project with a generous donation of $200,000.

Larry Baldock made a last minute attempt to alter the draft Local Alcohol Policy, despite having lost his amendments when the draft was being drawn up in conjunction with the Western Bay Council. We are doing it in tandem to ensure the same rules across our boundaries. Larry used his full 10 minutes in his address and a full five minutes in his right of reply. He lost it 9-2 with only Tony Christiansen supporting him. There was little that was outstandingly radical in what Larry proposed. But as it’s only a draft the rest of us felt that we should wait and see what you out there in ratepayer land thought.

Spacial planning

We are to have a Bay of Plenty Spatial Plan. But it won’t be named that.

And, few would know, understand or care with that name is. Oh joy.

Another plan to add to more plans.

But Mary Ann McLeod, CEO of Bay of Plenty Regional Council, assured us it could “eliminate 310 other plans and consolidate cross boundary issues”. I’ll believe that when or if it happens. In the year?

Tsunami risk came up again and elected members were told that this risk needed to be evidence based and judged on a site by site basis. And it depends on how big the wave is.

Volcanic ash is apparently considered a bigger danger (along with meteors,

comets, rains, aliens…)

The Bay Times did its thing again, publishing their council reporter’s personal, one dimensional opinion of elected members “performance” during the last term. Given his inconsistent attendance records, among other things, you would have to have the cheek of old Ned to portray yourself as someone in a position to comment like that. The story confused the individual rating with the photographs of each elected member. Just one more sorry example of inaccuracy.

Four elected members attended the Elders Forum.

This group is set up to advocate on issues facing the senior end of our community, but it transpires that many of these issues affect a wide cross section.

For instance, mobility issues on buses for seniors are similar to those facing mothers with youngsters.

There are 35 buses operating in Tauranga and they all “kneel” – sometimes you have to request this.

Did you know you can buy an all-day pass that will take you all over town on the bus for $7? Bus company representatives explained that it is uneconomic

to put on smaller buses to run the off peak services – they would have to buy more buses. That’s why you see those big buses around town with hardly any one on them sometimes.

Stalwart staff retires

Council and ratepayers lost another stalwart staff member recently as Marg Amor retired. Marg was PA to manager of Technical Services during the politically turbulent days of renewing our city’s water processing plants. The epitome of efficiency, Marg went about her duties with grace and diligence when, at times, there wasn’t a lot of grace around. Thanks for your support Marg, on behalf of all those who use and appreciate our pristine water supply; and for all the other good work you assisted with.

Tourism promotions hub Tourism Bay of Plenty’s Rhys Arrowsmith in the new office he says will be a Tauranga promotions hub.

Promotions and events in Tauranga are set to get a boost with the creation of a promotions hub around Tourism Bay of Plenty’s new Wharf St offices.

General manager Rhys Arrowsmith is excited about the recent shift to offices in the former Wharf St restaurant site overlooking the harbour.

With Downtown Tauranga shifting into adjoining offices next month – and hopes of attracting a Tauranga events agency – all organisations would benefit from being so close, says Rhys.

“It’s about getting the working space close, so we work hand-in-hand,” says Rhys, who envisages benefits including making it easier for the organisations to keep informed of

each other’s initiatives and encouraging helpful collaboration.

“It could be to work together to attract a major event, like the AIMS Games, where it really helps having Tauranga events involved early.”

Downtown Tauranga manager Kirby Weis is looking forward to the shift, saying it is always positive to work closely with organisations with similar aims to promote the area.

Rhys says the new offices, which Tourism Bay of Plenty shifted into a fortnight ago, are also the perfect spot to host visitors with its view out to the harbour “the crown jewels”.

But he stresses the shift is costing no more than its former Willow St offices.

The view out his window reminds him of the coastal Bay of Plenty’s key appeal to its major market – the many domestic visitors drawn here for the beach and relaxing.

In keeping with the Mount’s reputation for the surf and beaches, Rhys has taken the literal approach in setting up the shared board room. It has been dubbed the Ted Davison Board Room, with a vintage surfboard made by the former Mount Maunganui manufacturer being the main plank of the boardroom table, cradled by old pier sidings from the port.

“It’s a bit of fun and it’s what we’re all about,” says Rhys, who describes Ted – who has owned the Cosy Corner holiday park in Mount Maunganui for 45 years – as an icon in the tourism industry.

The camp is the type of place which accommodates some of the 75 per cent of the 4.4 million visitor bed nights to the region under the ‘visiting friends and relatives’ category (baches, apartments, backpackers and at friends’ places).

Iconic photography business celebrates 65 years One of Tauranga’s oldest and most iconic retail businesses is busy celebrating its 65th anniversary today.

Carters Photographics marks 65 years of customer service in the photographic industry and owner Matt Dunn says a great deal has changed since Harold Carter first bought the photographic services from a pharmacy on The Strand in 1948.

“Since then we’ve had the advent of the Polaroid film, SLR cameras, 110 film and digital photography.

“There have been so many different pieces of technology, and Carters has been at the forefront of that. We’ve always been early adopters of technology.”

In 2002 Carters bought a $250,000 digital photographic lab – the first in Tauranga. Last year it repeated the process with an environmentally friendly high definition photo lab – one of four in New Zealand.

Carters has been based on Devonport Rd since the mid 1950s and has served many generations of customers.

“We see stunning photos and that is probably one of the joys of this industry.

We sell the hardware and then we get to see the photos.

These include memories of such occasions as newborn babies, or travels through exotic places.

“We also get the heartache when families come in to scan photos of loved ones who have passed away and they need them urgently for the funeral.

“Every day is different and that’s what is great about our business.”

To launch itself forward for the next 65 years, Carters is opening a new store on Grey St in September/October, which Matt says will be bigger – meaning more products on show.

The site also has better customer access, he says.

The new store will sit between the Goddards and Piccadilly arcades, a similar position to its current spot on Devonport Rd.

Amazing what simple things will keep a keen dog amused! Ady and I have been playing frisbee lately and the German has finally figured out that it’s

more fun to retrieve and play nicely, rather than chasing and bossing me around.

Small set back, however, when we lost our rubber frisbee in a pond at the lakes. Uncle's got one now that floats, so hopefully no more lost toys.

Bee Aware Month 1st – 30th August

Promoting the importance of bees The Mossop family has known for a long time the benefits of beekeeping go beyond producing honey for your toast. Now third generation beekeepers, this family business wants to promote awareness regarding the importance of bees.

“Bees are essential for the environment and help sustain the eco-system. We need bees for pollination, because without this there would be very little food for us,” explains Mossop’s general manager Wendy Mossop.

“Bees are like the canary in the coal mine, when the canary goes quiet, you know something is wrong – and we are seeing this with bee colonies collapsing around the globe,” says Wendy..

Neil and Wendy Mossop are members of the National Beekeepers Association of New Zealand – and through their website, and honey shop in Tauriko, they’re helping raise public awareness on ways people can help contribute to the survival of New Zealand bees.

“People need to be aware of the type of trees they should be planting to promote bees,” says Neil, Mossop’s managing director. Neil also explains that issues with chemical sprays on plants also contribute to lower bee numbers. “It’s a ripple effect.

Bees collect pollen, and the nutrients in it, and take it back to the hive.

The chemicals and artificial nutrients can have a detrimental affect on the health of the hive.”

Along with Mossop’s preparing hives for kiwifruit pollination and the honey production season, the company has just opened a new packing plant to complement

their processing facility, enabling them to process up to 250 tonnes of honey each year.

The family business is going from strength to strength despite the recent tough economic environment, and they are looking forward to the new season and challenges ahead.

Art for community heart Want to help make a difference for those in need, while rewarding yourself? St Peter’s House is offering the perfect answer with its charity art auction to fund its community services.

Trust director Andrew Tomlinson says the Art for Heart Sake charity auction and sale was prompted by the inability to keep up with demand.

“The need is always bigger than we can supply, so that more that we can make the more people we can help.”

Among the 60 art pieces up for sale, most of which have been created by wellknown Western Bay artists, is a piece from

Prime Minister John Key which Andrew hopes will attract lots of interest.

Andrew says the works cover all styles and would look great on any wall.

But when asked about the Prime Minister’s contribution of an outline of a hand, titled ‘The Hand of Government’, he simply says: “I guess he’s a politician rather than an artist”.

The organisation offers support ranging from counselling, to parenting and assertiveness training; and a debt management programme for those in critical need.

‘Plastic Free August’ challenge set Following the success of a recent ‘Plastic Free July’ promotion in Australia, a similar push has been launched in Tauranga for August by Envirohub Bay of Plenty.

With plastics all around us, the Envirohub has issued a challenge for all Western Bay people to think hard about their choices and think of the environment.

“The challenge is quite simple,” states promotional material for Plastic Free August. “Minimize your usage of singleuse plastic – ideally none at all for the whole month.”

Single-use plastics include plastic shopping bags, plastic cups, straws, plastic packaging – basically anything that’s

intended to be used once then sent to landfill. “If refusing all single-use plastic sounds too daunting this time, try the top four challenge [straws, plastic bags, plastic bottles and coffee cup lids].”

Remember this is about no single-use plastic, so reusable plastic bottles or grocery bags are fine, say the Envirohub team.

“The key thing is to think through what you buy and cut back on everything except essential purchases of plastic packaging.”

first major fundraiser St Peter’s House has held, and Andrew is delighted with the response they’ve had so far, including the support from artists.

“It’s one thing to say that we offer these services for free, but we still need to cover our costs, so the support [for the auction] has been really good.”

Andrew says programmes are regularly reviewed to meet community need, including introducing a debt management programme two years ago – which has had a three month waiting list ever since.

“There is a huge demand for that out there, so it’s great to be able to help. It’s huge for a family to be able to work their way

through this and see the stress lift.”

Raw, natural thinking is best The world we live in now is vastly different than when we evolved into modern man.

In the beginning, before the discovery of fire, man largely ate a raw food diet. From studies of different cultures around the world in regard to cancer rates

traditional local diets have a profound effect on these statistics.

Ancient tribes and cultures still eating traditional diets are shown to have very low or zero incidence of cancers.

Some of the most freakishly healthy looking people I’ve met lately are living proof that raw, natural, and unprocessed foods have had a positive effect on their lives.

Does this mean we all have to take the Bear Grylls’ approach and bite into raw, wild game?

Well maybe not, but raw foodists believe that enzymes in raw foods like amylases, proteases and lipases aid digestion; and heating food above 40-49 degree Celsius degrades or destroys these enzymes in food.

Raw foodists also believe also that alkaline living in foods neutralise free radicals, which would make green smoothies powerful, antioxidant drinks.

So now, increasingly, I’m noticing the words raw on certain products, like raw cacao – which isn’t cocoa spelt wrong – but the same powder in its raw unadulterated form. Being bitter and rich like dark chocolate, it has that ‘x factor’ feel-good stuff we sometimes need.

Cacao and coconut slice

Ingredients: 2 cups self-raising flour 2 Tbsp cacao powder 2 cups desiccated coconut 200g butter 200g dark coconut sugar For the icing: 2 cups icing sugar 2 cups coconut 2 Tbsp cacao powder 6-8 Tbsp hot water

Method: Preheat the oven to 180 degree Celsius.

Mix together the flour, coconut and cacao.

Melt butter in a saucepan with the dark coconut sugar until all melted. Mix all together and then press into lines a 31x 22cm slice tray. Bake for 15 minutes. Mix together the icing ingredients to a firm icing.

Remove slice from oven and allow to cool briefly before icing while still warm – this helps topping stick when cutting it up.

It’s a little bit naughty but a great treat for kid’s lunchboxes and provides a good dose of antioxidants.

Student creation in-store demand It may have started off as an unfamiliar brand – but now the #nombar is in hot demand with Mount Maunganui shops wanting a taste of the unique product.

The #nombar, a kiwifruit snack bar created by Otumoetai College group ‘Royala Enterprise’ through the Young Enterprise Scheme, could soon be sold in Nosh Food Market and Pizza Crave in Mount Maunganui.

The group has been selling at the Palm Beach Plaza Papamoa Lions Market and Mount Mainstreet Farmers Market and now managing director Zeenat Azad says they were approached by Nosh food market and Pizza Crave in Mount Maunganui.

“We still plan on doing more markets but at this stage we’re trying to get it [our product] into as many places as we can.”

Western Bay of Plenty District Council and Tauranga City Council have been working together to develop a draft Local Alcohol Policy. As a part of this, we asked the public at the start of the year to complete a survey about their views regarding licensed premises.

We received 805 responses which have contributed to the development of the draft Local Alcohol Policy.

WHY?

Since the passing of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act on 18 December 2012 councils are now able to develop a Local Alcohol Policy to guide decisions on the number and location of new licensed premises, opening hours and other licensing conditions of both existing and new licensed premises.

The Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty District Local Alcohol Policy can cover rules for both ‘Off’ and ‘On’ licensed premises, club licences and special licences.

An Off-licence is a licence for premises where the licensee can sell alcohol for consumption somewhere else. Bottle stores and supermarkets are examples of off-licenced premises.

An On-licence is a licence for premises where the licensee can sell alcohol for consumption on the premises. Bars, taverns, hotels and night clubs are examples of on-licenced premises.

A Club Licence is a licence for a range of clubs, for example RSAs and sports clubs.

A Special Licence allows for selling and supplying alcohol at events or to allow a licensee to extend their operating hours to allow for the sale and supply of alcohol at an event.

Under the draft Policy the following rules and restrictions are being proposed and it’s these matters that the councils want your views on.

Students excel at university The Careers Expo is coming to town this weekend drawing attention of Year 13 students searching for the right career.

The expo runs August 9 and 10 at ASB Arena with exhibits from a range of study providers available to students looking to enter university life.

Former Mount Maunganui College

student Megan Burton-Brown chose to study at Waikato University and loves it.

“I love Hamilton. The university campus is beautiful. Everything is close and there is always plenty going on.”

Megan is in her second year of a Bachelor in Communication Studies degree, majoring in public relations and marketing, and specialising in event management.

Megan has received a $2500 WMS International Exchange Scholarship and in mid-August is heading off on an exchange to Maastricht University in the Netherlands to study at their School of Business and Economics.

Other scholarships she has received are the $5000 Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Excellence Award and the Brian Smith Memorial Entrance Scholarship of $1800. They all help with study and living costs.

Through his Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship, Bay of Plenty pace bowler Thomas Clout has been able to combine his passion for cricket with study at the University of Waikato.

Thomas is in his second year of a conjoint degree a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Man-

agement Studies.

Fresh home from their latest annual overland adventure driving 15,000 km through Europe and around the Black Sea, Tauranga couple Maurice and Anne O’Reilly are looking for gaps on the map for next year’s adventure.

Hee Haw’s Black Sea adventure Since their first overland adventure driving from London to Cape Town 35 years ago, Tauranga couple Maurice and Anne O’Reilly have developed a passion for driving off the beaten track.

They have since travelled through 138 countries on their motoring adventures – including about 13 on their latest odyssey which they have just returned home from that covered 15,000km –circumnavigating the Black Sea. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea – in fact Maurice describes it as a challenging journey the couple enjoy “in a masochistic sort of way”.

For 10 weeks they travelled on the road with their stead Hee Haw, their diligent work horse of a Nissan Terrano, staying in two star hotels.

“The accommodation ranges from superb to something that you would probably prefer not to spend your night in but may have no other choice. Some hotels have no water, or no electricity, some have pretty suspect bedding – there are all sorts of issues.”

But for the O’Reilly’s that’s just part of the package and the reason they keep planning new adventures: “we’re looking for different cultures and things that are different to what you have at home”.

In recent years motor-racing enthusiast Maurice has been competing in a New Zealand-dominated team at the legendary Nurburgring 24 hour race in Germany with Tauranga’s Wayne Moore.

“It’s a long way to go for a week’s competition, so we always add on a couple of months for adventure either side. We have this agreement that if I go motor racing she can go on a travel adventure.”

With a few days to recuperate after surviving the Green Hell, they left for Dracula’s lair and the start of their 10-week trip travelling through Hungary and onto Romania where they discovered a country of contrast with dilapidated old buildings and horse drawn carts alongside BMWs and modern industrial

centres. Bulgaria followed, then they went overland through Turkey where they encountered their biggest disappointment.

“The thing that was most disappointing was that we were unable to cross by ferry from Turkey into Russia, so we had to back track by more than 1000km to get another ferry that took us directly to the Ukraine.”

A ferry they had booked to take them across the Black Sea from Trabzon to the Russian port of Sochi was unable to leave, after Russian authorities decided to close Sochi without any warning to “tart it up” to prepare to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

“That was unplanned and was particularly tough.”

The back-tracking 1000km overland in Turkey within a day was only the start of their problems – with the planned 24 hour ferry trip stretching to an unbearable 56 hours. Forced to travel at slow speed, the ferry ran out of food, while passengers sweltered in rooms like ovens.

Maurice says the many former Soviet countries they visited were fairly primitive by Western standards, with some “atrocious” roads that meant a 4WD was the only way to get around without mechanical issues.

Poverty and backward conditions were worst in the Caucasus region; and the couple were also affected by the environmental devastation of the Caspian from pollution. They have no specific plans yet for next year’s adventure yet but know ideas will come.

“We keep seeing places on the map we haven’t been to,” says Maurice – including South America, the only continent they have not been to, which he plans to cover in three annual trips.

‘Buyers beware’ - warning of hidden damage history Buyer beware is the advice from Tauranga used Japanese car importers after concerns were raised about a loophole allowing previously damaged cars sold without the history being declared.

Inconsistent paperwork requirements have allowed 50,000 damaged second-hand Japanese cars to be sold in New Zealand in the last seven years – as if they were undamaged – because they had been repaired. Stadium Cars Tauranga managing director Carin Arundel believes damaged cars, including those that had been repaired,

should not be able to be brought into country. Carin says the concern highlights the need for buyers to do their homework and he recommends only using larger reputable companies that give AA appraisals or free warranties on them, rather than buying on price.

“I guess its buyer beware – you get what you pay for. If you are buying

Travelling off track - family shares tips Travelling across the width of Russia, criss-crossing Canada and the US, plus undertaking overland trips from Singapore and Hong Kong to London – the O’Reilly’s have clicked up a few kilometres.

After driving 250,000km on their annual expeditions during the last 20 years they have learned a few things about organising a great road trip away from the main tourist hot spots – and they’re sharing their tips with Bay Driver’s readers.

Maurice says this can make or break a trip. After previously driving a Land Rover, the O’Reilly’s now use a Nissan Terrano, a 4WD he says is “absolutely superb”.

“It’s the ideal car for that sort of trip – it’s the right size, it can carry a fair load of luggage but it’s not too big for countries with narrow roads.”

The Terrano’s tough nature and solid suspension, along with its big 3.2 litre diesel engine are ideal for the challenge, with diesel a critical choice for its

economy and availability wherever trucks went.

Choosing a car that’s old enough not to be stolen was also helpful, but he says a good security system is also important.

At least if you buy a used, imported vehicle that has had, for instance, a guard replaced, an independent engineer is required to make sure the repair is done to a high standard and safe.”

Consumer Affairs Minister Craig Foss has asked officials to investigate whether the consumer information notice, presented with all cars offered for sale, gives consumers the misleading impression the car they are buying has not been damaged and should be amended or removed.

He is urging consumers to get independent inspections done before buying cars.

Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association chief executive David Vinsen says the field stating whether a vehicle was damaged should be removed because “it can lull you into a false sense of security".

Time to mend those little, broken hearts We’ve all heard songs about broken hearts – but as a group of Bay of Plenty families knows – time does not mend every one.

For Heart Awareness Week this week members of Bay of Plenty Heart, the support group for families of children with congenital heart defects, have been taking to the street to fundraise to cover transport costs for regular medical appointments and help with other support.

“It can be pretty frustrating for them,” says Alicia, about the impact the heart defect has on children.

Alicia and Thomas Bohanna are among those taking collections at Bayfair during the weekend, while others are collecting in central Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, The Warehouse Fraser Cove, Te Puke and Katikati.

Thomas still tries to be as active as his friends, but

Alicia says he gets tired quickly when he plays soccer and cannot keep up with his nine year-old brother.

“It is very frustrating for him. He’s played soccer since he was five and he loves it. You can’t keep them wrapped up in cotton wool because they need to learn their own limits.”

The right side of Thomas’s heart does not function properly (a congenital heart defect called Ebsteins Anomaly), and he has had operations to insert a cardiac catheter to help, and a cardiac monitor which records when he has a funny heartbeat.

Those born with heart defects have an uncertain life expectancy – with some going on to live a normal life span.

Should I be worried about my worrier?

Like adults, most kids experience anxiety – it’s a normal part of childhood.

Stressful situations will trigger anxiety, for example, starting school, moving, or loss of a loved one.

And usually the child can be comforted and reassured until the anxiety settles. Anxiety is also normal at certain stages of children’s development. However, some children develop anxiety disorders – when the anxiety is constant, age-inappropriate or out of proportion. It can interfere with friendships, social skills and school performance – if this sounds like your child, it’s time to seek help.

Anxiety disorders in children are

common. With one in eight children affected, it’s one of the most common mental health disorders in childhood and adolescence.

Children feel their anxiety physically, mentally and emotionally, and each child will experience it differently. Common symptoms include: tummy pains, digestive upsets, headaches, racing

heart, trembling, tantrums, poor concentration, low immunity, nightmares or terrors, sleep problems. When supporting an anxious child, I use a combination of herbal medicine and nutrition.

I first assess diet and correct any nutritional deficiencies.

There are some key nutrients required for healthy nervous system function: magnesium, B vitamins, especially B3 and B5, vitamin C, tryptophan, zinc and omega 3s.

Children generally respond very well to herbal medicine, and herbs can be used in acute and chronic health conditions. Herbal medicines can be used to settle and sooth, for repair and recovery, energy and stamina, for calmness and concentration.

Weight loss – myths and realities Ever feel like you are getting nowhere with your weight loss regime? You are exercising, you are eating less – and yet the scales are just not reflecting your efforts.

The reason could be as simple as the exchange of fat for muscle.

Muscle weighs three times that of fat; and thus the reason why we should not be focussed on what the scales read and rather how much better our clothes are fitting.

A far better method of tracking one’s success is by using a tape measure or getting a bioelectrical impedance analysis.

BIA is the use of a very low electrical current that can measure actual muscle and fat mass.

Your progress can be mapped through regular analysis.

Fat can’t be turned into muscle; it needs to be burned off through eating the correct foods and exercising more, whereas muscle needs to be built through stressing the muscles with resistance or weight training.

You often hear that the only way to lose weight is through eating less.

This is not the full picture.

If we concentrate only on calorie intake we are at risk of not just losing fat but also muscle. Loss of muscle is contrary to good weight management.

The more muscle we have the more fat we burn when we are at rest.

Low calorie diets may have weight loss results on the scales, but the danger is the loss of muscle.

Some people consider they have not had an easy or happy life, and this will show later in life on their faces.

However, others, no matter what their life has given them have managed to turn lemons into lemonade – and this also shows on their faces.

And once you resume eating normally, the weight just piles on because you have lost the muscle that kept your metabolism ticking over.

What and when we eat is very important, when the goal is to lose weight and gain strength.

It is important to eat enough protein to support our muscle growth and maintenance.

However, it is not all about protein, we need sufficient carbohydrates to provide the necessary energy to exercise at high intensity.

A fat-free diet will be detrimental to health, as we need a certain amount of fat.

Building knowledge is power The building industry continues to change at a rapid pace.

Much of this reform has spawned from a report commissioned as a result of the leaky building syndrome, known as the ‘Hunn Report’.

This investigation highlighted 25 areas of critical failure. Government has been working through these failures, in an attempt to bring our construction industry back into line.

One area of change, which was recently ticked off, is licensing for practitioners.

Tradesman involved with critical work on a house, now have more accountability and transparency with who did what on site.

Some might argue this brings about more liability.

So how does a tradesman lift the bar to reduce risk

Mould in tenants’ home If you are worried about the health of your tenants, keeping tenants in your rental investment, or the on-going upkeep of your building structure, here’s how you do it.

Tackle the damp first because a dry house is easier and cheaper to heat.

1. Ventilate: Start with any room where mould accumulates – typically the bathroom, laundry and kitchen. Install vent fans to the outside.

If your house is damp everywhere consider a whole house ventilation system. You need to get that damp air out of your house.

2. Insulate: If your house is relatively dry but cold

the next step is adding ceiling and floor insulation. It will cut your heating bills and make your house warmer no matter what sort of heating system you use. You must trap any warmth created by the sun or by your heating systems in the house.

3. Heat: This is the final step in your process. Install a heat pump or if you prefer a fireplace, choose from a modern, energy efficient, wood or gas burner.

To stop mould completely you must do these three steps. And, it will make your tenant happier, save them some money, and keep them in your rental investment – which ultimately saves you money.

Electrical certification vital for homeowners

The Electrical Contractors Association of New Zealand (ECANZ) is reminding homeowners that legislation, which came into force last week, requires all electricians to provide customers with a Certificate of Compliance or an Electrical Safety Certificate when they complete work on an installation.

ECANZ CEO Neville Simpson says insurers and prospective home buyers are increasingly insisting on seeing certification for recently completed work – and points out it is critical consumers are aware of this.

Previously, contractors did not need to issue certificates of compliance for new installations that were deemed to be low-risk, prescribed electrical work.

But this changed to cover all work, including maintenance or replacement work on existing properties.

“Your electrical contractor is legally required to provide you with a certificate of compliance or an electrical safety certificate, depending on the risk level of the work.

And if they don’t offer, you should be asking for one.”

Neville says that anyone planning electrical work should ensure the electrician they plan to engage is licensed, before work begins, and keep a copy of the certification once it is completed.

To insinuate my next-of-kin would put me ‘out in a rubbish bag’, or don’t want me to ‘live’, is insulting.

It offends me they suggest I save my pension for ‘a party’ after I depart.

I am not stupid. Sixty five cents a day willnot cover a ‘proper’ funeral, with expensive casket, flowers, advertising, celebrants’ fees etc. If I contact these companies I’ll be encouraged to pay more of my pension to them, so they can pay for staff and pathetic

advertising blurbs. Shock tactics with hate advertising, involving dying, is sad. To anyone planning their funeral please put funds in your own interest bearing account to make your money work for you.

Talking to other retirees, they feel equally affronted. As a ‘Seniors’ area, Tauranga encourages celebration of life, not put downs or comic portrayal of elderly. B ut wait, they may be trying for the ‘worst TV advert’, in which case, they could win.

Ted Petrie (The Sun, July 26) makes a good point that buses into the city are too slow for city workers, with a 55 minute trip from Papamoa to the city.

He proposes a trial of express buses, and this idea has merit, but we may right now have a great opportunity to do better. Auckland is about to launch its new electric suburban trains, so it may be possible to lease or buy say four of its present 30-plus year old ex TransPerth railcars for a trial of say three years.

Better still, a company such as Violia, who run the present Auckland trains, and who have experience, knowledge, skills etc may be prepared to do it for us.

The point is that trains suitable for a trial are probably about to become available, hopefully at a modest price.

The railway is already there, and offers the opportunity for fast undelayed travel into the city. The stations just need to be platforms with bus shelters and adequately large park and ride areas.

I would suggest three routes: Mt MaunganuiStrand; Papamoa-Strand; and Te Puna-Strand. If the demand proved to be there, these could be extended to Omokoroa and Te Puke.

I believe that this possible opportunity is worth looking into.

Ministry of declining fisheries Who would trust the Ministry for Primary Industries to oversee or make any sensible judgements on our snapper fisheries when they can’t even get their own name and address right for meat exports.

Wind back the clock to when it was called the grandiose Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Ministry of Fisheries and lump them both together.

Because a change of name cannot cover up an abysmal record of failure and incompetence.

Successive governments have presided over shocking decisions for decades and are directly responsible for the declining state of our fishery, not only snapper but many other species.

Under their stewardship MAF have allowed

private enterprise to decimate orange roughy on the Chatham Rise and reduced huge areas like Tasman Bay to a barren wasteland from what was once a fishing paradise.

The collapse of prime fishing grounds and unique priceless species are being lost to overseas interests under the banner of “joint venture”, a fancy name for rape and pillage by foreigners in return for political brownie points and bugger all else.

All okay with them; undersized fish sold through iwi-owned outlets, yep all good; sale of critically endangered whitebait from the roadside, go for it; and the crowning glory must be the flogging of our precious kahawai

Commercial vandalism at its worst. Add to all this the issuing of licences to strip inland waterways such as Tauranga Harbour of weed-eating parore which ends up as cat food is tantamount to a criminal act.

The present state of our fisheries is nothing less than a testament to the ignorance and incompetence of the people we have entrusted to care for it.

Now, when faced with a percieved threat to future snapper stocks, what is their kneejerk reaction?

Simply penalise reccreational fishers by slashing bag limits to the ridiculous number of three and increasing the size limit, both ideas costly, punitive and unnecessary.

All we have to do is close the season for 30 days at the height of spawning and the snapper stocks will take care of themselves.

I am sure all stakeholders could live with this little pain for a long term gain.

Wake up and smell the poverty Compelled to care I see the chap on the Meridian TV ad telling us that one in four children are brought up in poverty.

Struth, New Zealand is supposed to be a first world nation.

What’s going on here? I wondered whether this is related to the stat that tells us the bottom (socio-economic) 15% of people are having 25% of the babies. That’s one in four as well.

It’s both sad and ironic that what was put in place in the 20th Century to prevent poverty, is in the 21st Century, actually helping create it.

Welfare is all well and good but it comes with some ugly downsides. It’s like a drug. Great when you first taste it, but fatal in the long run.

And not only does it help ruin people’s lives (especially young ones) but it comes with a huge debt problem that this country will not rid itself of in my life time.

New Zealand has far too many single parent (read multi-partner) homes that go into creating these unacceptable statistics.

Welfare should kept be for the very old and the very sick.

Everyone else can make a contribution somehow, someway.

It’s time we looked at how to prevent it, not throw free food at it, when it’s too late.So come on New Zealand.

I’m in my 70th year and have never ever taken part in a protest in my life. However, I felt compelled to show my support against the unbelievably abhorrent testing of party pills on animals.

It can hardly count as being scientifically useful for human illness.

People choose to take these legal highs; and for dogs to be subjected to such cruelty on their behalf is morally wrong. I spoke to a lady with a beagle (a popular breed for testing) that was a rescue dog.

She told me her dog took three years to recover from trauma it experienced.

The protest was well organised, and it was a privilege to hold a banner and mix with people and their dogs.

Our Government should be ashamed that they allow party pills to be tested on animals.

Hopefully the protest marchers make those in power think again. Sadly it is unlikely Viv Monk, Matua.

Drugs, jobs and horticulture skills Re: Things never change – drugs hinder jobs – Darrell Hellier July 19.

Just over 30 years ago I was asked to take charge of a work skills group teaching horticulture to 30 odd people, on a two acre block in one of our major cities.

On arrival, inspecting the site at 10am, I found a scene of utter desolation, a 6x10 glasshouse minus most of its glass, half a dozen broken hand tools, not a single spade or fork among them.

Nor any person on the site until even-

tually finding two assistant tutors sitting under a hedge smoking pot.

“Where are the trainees?”, I asked.

“The first seven named are in the hospital getting their daily fix; next five, it’s their court appearance day; three seeing their probation officer; then doctor’s visits, tangi days and so on.”

But the last one put the cream on the cake: “Oh, you’ll never get them out of bed before lunch time.”

Needless to say I did not take up the position.

Several more nails were hammered into the coffin of climate change denial this week. No doubt the Flat Earth Society will welcome aboard any who continue to think there is nothing to worry about.

Coastal erosion is a natural process and there have been many instances of slips on cliffs around Tauranga Harbour throughout our history.

These slips are problematic because they often result in sediment ending up in the harbour, leave vulnerable slip scarps, and can threaten private property and public reserve land. If predictions of increased extreme weather events, resulting from changes to our climate, come to pass, then we are likely to see more coastal erosion and increased sedimentation of our harbour.

The issue of inner harbour erosion has regained public focus following recent slips on peninsular cliff edges – especially in Tauranga Harbour at Matua and Omokoroa.

Last Friday, I was in the Rangitikei electorate with local MP Ian McKelvie. This included a briefing from FarmSafe and getting some practical experience in safe quad bike riding practices.

I then spent the weekend in Reefton, to celebrate 125 years since the town became the first in the Southern Hemisphere to receive publically-supplied electricity. It was great to meet some of the local people who are involved in a bid to restore the powerhouse and make it into a tourist attraction. Earlier this week, I attended a dinner with the Prime Minister and the Honourable Peter O’Neill, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea.

Money spent on Omokoroa and the debt incurred, being spread across the Bay in rate rises, will be a hot topic for questions to candidates for the upcoming election.

Western Bay councillor Garry Webber leapt to the defence of the council, following a front page story in the local paper on ratepayers being stung with rates rise. His reply on July 11 was comprehensive and though it might be great news for Omokoroa it may not be as well received by the rest of Western Bay. Garry outlined the history of the council’s urban growth initiative starting in 1991 to the development of a structure plan.

Proud to be descendent of overlapping cultures I enjoyed The Sun editorial, July 26. As a fifth generation European New Zealander, whose blood is both English (like about 80 per cent of NZers) and Scottish (like about 50 per cent of NZers), I’m proud to be a descendant and beneficiary of two rich and overlapping cultures.

The English and the Scots, like all nationalities, were involved in warfare, sometimes against each other. But the English part of me has to gently reproach the Scottish part. Which, like the editor, seems only to remember the times in history when an English army crossed the Scottish border but not the times when a Scottish army crossed the English border. Nor should we forget the Medieval clashes between England and Scotland had more to do with aspirations of Norman-descended English and Norman-descended Scots than aspirations of the Anglo-Saxons (England and south east Scotland) and the ‘Celts’ (west and north Scotland). From the 17th Century we should refer to British colonisation rather than English colonisation, as the Scots and Irish played an important role in the Empire, especially in the Imperial army.

Hi-Cane season: Protecting ourselves and Mother Earth

As the annual Hi-Cane season approaches it is encouraging to see community initiatives such as this one I came across in Te Puna this week.

Everyone in breathing distance of Hi-Cane, and all of the other poisonous agri chemicals being used on kiwifruit and avocados, must be notified by law.

For those who don’t know Hi-Cane (Hydrogen Cyanamide) is a defoliant very similar to Agent Orange used in the Vietnam war.

It is sprayed on kiwifruit vines to strip all foliage and then to promote bud break and return more and larger fruit.

While I understand the reasons

for its use I will never accept them, especially when one balances profit against human health and the health of our whenua.

Tauranga has always been a kai

basket that grows plenty of everything and chemicals were never needed in the past, so why now?

In Maoridom we are taught by our elders that we must protect Papatuanuku - our Earth Mother - at all costs and for me poisoning her with agri chemicals like Hi-Cane is short sighted and there will always be a price to pay.

Learning from Rena: Dedicating shipping lanes is what we need

to avoid another Rena, and so what if this slows the speed of shipping traffic - small compromise. We need to learn lessons and put in place strategies to protect our beautiful coastline. Our coastline provides pleasure, is a haven of biodiversity, and generates significant revenue. The constituency of the BOPRC extends up to 50km offshore. Your councillors should be lobbying for dedicated shipping lanes. The Rena, Mikhail Lermontov and Costa Concordia all have one thing in common - careless captains taking shortcuts. Dedicated shipping lanes would remove the route discretion that captains currently have when traversing the Bay of Plenty coastline. Hi-Cane: Let’s find a better way Tis the season of Hycane upon us. I acknowledge that people must make a living, however, there must be a better way. We owe it to ourselves and our children and their children to find a better way.

Mr Cammish explained nothing in his article, other than what was already known.The juggling of the points dystem, is making it a ‘wheel of fortune’ chance; either we win, pay, or suffer.

Patients would feel more comfortable, and it would be more appropriate and fair, if the form filling, plus the review, was done directly on a patient and BOPHB theme, then patients may not think the surgeons who suggest paying have a vested interest.

Cohen tickets: not as simple as it seems Laughing Lenny’s on his way back to New Zealand.

Yep, Leonard Cohen returns to New Zealand for three concerts in December. I was there for both of his previous tours and thought both were equally stunning. So I’ve been checking out tickets for the Auckland show on December 21.

The first thing that you can’t help but notice is that, damn, they’re expensive.

The best seats cost $204 and the rest $146. Someone is going to make a fortune from this little jaunt. Cohen concerts are almost invariably sold out, so there’ll be a lot of dosh slopping about somewhere.

The second thing that becomes clear when you look more closely into tickets is that to get the best possible seats you should probably investigate one of the “pre-sales”. This is advice that it is now too late to follow, as the pre-sales have finished, but lemme explain.

I don’t for a minute suggest that there won’t still be great seats available – after all Vector is a very large arena – when tickets go on sale to the “general public” on August 12. But, by the time this happens, many people will already have tickets. Actually, it’s all been rather confusing.

If you are a Leonard Cohen Fan Club member, which basically means someone signed up to the Leonard

Cohen forums at his main fan website, there were advanced tickets on sale for two days, starting July 31. A password to access these was posted on the website forums.

Email confusion

Then on July 30 the promoters, Frontier Touring Company, sent out an email announcing a pre-sale for their members, starting August 8, at 9pm. There was a link in the email which gave you a password. Then, and this is the confusing bit, Frontier sent out another email on August 2 which announced the same pre-sale. Only this one had a different password listed. As of the date of writing this, I still haven’t worked that out.

Even more confusing is that the link in the second email sent you to the Ticketmaster site (where you actually get the tickets), and there it said: “pre-sale starts August 6, 11am”. Hmmm...

It turns out that the pre-sale starting on August 6 was yet another different pre-sale, this time for Visa card members. Oddly, despite being a Visa card user (and quite a heavy one at that) I’d heard nothing about it from the good folk at Visa. That pre-sale needed yet another different password.

Fortunately, it was easy to find with a quick bit of Googling.

But, remember how I said that the tickets were somewhat on the pricey side? I guess the extras hardly count when set beside a $200 ticket. But this little notice pops up when you buy: “A compulsory Arena Land Levy not more than $2.75 applies to each ticket”.

And: “A handling fee of $8.00 per transaction applies”. And: “A payment processing fee of no more than 2.3% applies to purchases by credit card, debit card or gift card”.

And: “In addition a delivery fee may apply depending on the mode of delivery selected”.

Remember the good old days when we were all told that ordering things on the internet would save us money because of the lower fees? Could someone possibly have been telling porkies?

A silver lining

On the bright side, if you get tickets you can be rest assured that the sound in the notoriously sound-challenged Vector Arena will be pristine.

especially irritating one when you’ve shelled out so much money for a ticket. (I must confess I’m still angry at how bad the sound was there for the last Bob Dylan concert).

But Cohen’s sound guru has an unusual and impressive fix for sound problems.

He uses only mono sound for the entire concert, and the same mix that you hear from the front of the stage is run through dozens of reinforcement speakers that are placed throughout the venue.

His aim is that everyone in the room will have as close to the same perfect sound, as possible.

And he does a very good job at it.

Anyway, I’ve got a ticket now.

It’s a shame about having to mortgage the house to get it.

LIBERAL ARTS Starring: Josh Radnor, Elizabeth Olsen, Richard Jenkins - Dir: Josh Radnor Josh Radnor is best known for his character on TV’s How I Met Your Mother. Here he writes, directs and stars and makes a very good job of this likeable and not-at-all-dumb rom-com, focused on 35-year-old Jesse, whose New York life is somewhat directionless until he gets an invitation to attend his old university professor’s retirement dinner in Ohio.

Once there Jesse rediscovers the closeted joys of university life and, particularly, smart sexy student Zibby (a radiant Olsen). But he’s 35 and she’s 19. He’s done all this before, she’s just discovering everything for the first time.

Do they have a future – or even a present – together?

Actually, calling this a rom-com does the film a disservice. It’s a touching drama that is funny and smart, casting an affectionate eye on the strangeness of youth and how much we change without realising it. It manages to perfectly capture the eternal longing for that (probably illusory) time in life when everything seemed simpler.

Add in a fantastic turn from Jenkins as the retiring mentor, himself unsure of the lifechanges he is going through, and a delightful cameo from Allison Janney as a cynical English professor and you have a film that, while unlikely to set the world on fire, is a remarkably pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.

Identity Thief should have worked. And I’m sure it will rent in huge quantities because everyone will think that. It should have worked. Jason Bateman is always reliably funny and is perfect for the everyman character whose identity is stolen and whose life subsequently collapses. Melissa McCarthy

is perfect for the brash and crass thief, living it up on his credit. But somehow it fails to gel and every little bit that should be funny just becomes grating.

The secondary characters are underused and gags are milked way beyond their expiry date. If you want a good laugh, look elsewhere.

Mama , which boasts a “presented by Guillermo Del Toro” credit, is a creepy little story, taking the brooding feeling so well captured in Spanish films such as The Orphanage and running with it, impressing with both overall mood and sudden jump shocks. It kicks off with two small girls abandoned in

a forest hut after the murder/suicide of their parents.

Five years later they are discovered, feral but surprisingly alive. As they rehabilitate with their uncle and his girlfriend, mysteries compound and supernaturally Bad Things ensue. Who is Mama? Great spooky stuff; unfortunately silly ending.

Sly Stallone has at least kept control of his career with the likes of the Expendables films and seems a little more discerning than yer JCVDs, Seagals and Cages. In Bullet To The Head he’s a hitman (ageing, natch) who reluctantly teams with a young cop (Sung Kang) after his partner is killed.

There are two big pluses: the New Orleans setting and the brutally efficient direction courtesy of action veteran Walter Hill who keeps the mood dark and oppressive. It does insist on continually stating the bleedin’ obvious - some of the dialogue is appalling – but it’s an enjoyably tough little cookie.

Following the current rule that every horror film made before 1990 must be remade, we now have which, for reasons known only Evil Dead to the distributors, missed out on a general cinema release in New Zealand. It only showed in Auckland. But, as far as such remakes go, this is a pretty

good one, sticking fairly closely to the “cabin in the woods” template of the original, impressing with its frequently over-the-top special effects, and not doing anything too offensively stupid. The only real loss is the humour that was so essential to the original. And there’s – obviously – no Bruce Campbell.

The history of our building Formerly The Tauranga Bond Store, No.1 The Strand is home to SunMedia.

The Weekend Sun is profiling some of Tauranga’s historic places dotted around the city. This week reporter Zoe Hunter looks at our own building – No.1 The Strand, formerly the Tauranga Bond Store.

Originally The Tauranga Bond Store, No.1 The Strand is now home to SunMedia – a high standard media industry producing fast, free, news to more than 64,000 homes across the Bay of Plenty through the community newspaper ‘The Weekend Sun’ and online news website ‘SunLive’.

According to Historic Places Trust, the bond store was built for James Alexander Mann in 1883 as a warehouse for storing imported goods including general hardware, furniture, agricultural machinery, gardening tools and groceries, as well as liquor and tobacco.

In 1908 the business and the building was sold to Guinness Bros, for storage and business administration of wholesale wines and spirits. Also importers, producers and stockists of agricultural equipment, Guinness Bros played an essential role in the development of the Bay’s agricultural industry – later serving as a main retail area for many decades.

In 1986 Hughes and Cossar, also wine and spirits dealers, took over the building. Subsequently it was leased by Saunderson Packaging; and by Tulloch Photography from 1987 -1997.

In 1997 the ground floor was refurbished as a restaurant and bar. The upper floor was leased as office space. In the year 2000 SunMedia, created by Claire and Brian Rogers, filled a much needed gap for a Bay-owned and operated newspaper. The Rogers bought the property in 2008.

SunMedia general manager Ross Brown says the newspaper industry has a long history and to run a business providing modern news to readers across the Bay of Plenty is an honour.

Having clean hands (also known as hand hygiene) is one of the most effective and inexpensive ways of reducing the spread of diseases, such as colds and influenza, gastro infections (tummy bugs) and skin infections.

Matapihi School staff and students celebrating 100 years Te Kura o Matapihi School is busy celebrating a milestone achievement, reaching 100 years of operation in the community.

Past and present students celebrated with a cutting of the 100th birthday cake, and among them was Tauranga woman and

original pupil Betty Stamp.

Betty Stamp started school when she was six years old. Her family lived on the family farm opposite the school and she remembers having to cross the railway bridge every day to get to school. Betty was one of about six students enrolled at the school and by the time she reached Standard 6, there were only three.

“We were all in one room. The whole standards, from Standard

1 to Standard 6 were all in one room.”

The principal and his wife, who opened the school in 1913, were the only two teachers, says Betty.

He taught the “Primers” (the beginner students) and his wife taught the older students.

When Betty was 14 years old she left the school to work on her family farm for two years.

Although she is still in touch with some of her old school

friends, Betty says after visiting the school for the centennial celebration, nothing jogged her memory. “Everything has changed so much, it’s not funny.

When I went there again I didn’t recognise it.”

Volumes of research have shown even limited amounts of gentle exercise can reverse or delay the onset of ageing for middle-aged and senior adults. But if you are unsure where to begin, there is help at hand.

Next week Play in the Bay’s ‘Move it Month’ includes a handful of activities aimed at people aged over 45, offering the perfect chance to try your hand at an exercise class or routine.

On Monday, Priscilla Spooner from Fitlife Functional Exercise will run a class in Te Puke (Anglican Church, Centennial Room) at 10am using her dyna-band system of resistance exercise, which helps seniors improved their muscle strength and flexibility.
