Our national ‘don’t give a damn’ day Somehow it just doesn’t seem like a real week, with a day off in the middle. It’s as if we’re still on semi-holiday. And although a few of us had to work on Waitangi Day (these columns don’t write themselves, you know!) it still seemed like a holiday.

A lot of Kiwis are really over Waitangi Day. Not the day off, everyone is quite happy about skiving off, but they don’t give a hoot about the flag waving nationalism that it’s meant to inspire. Perhaps they’ve just had a gutsful of the whinging and moaning and disruption of a small minority of trouble makers that

every year try to push their ridiculous and ever-changing racist demands into the limelight.

Whatever, Kiwis happily take the day off and seem quite content to let the supposed reason for the day slip aside behind a day at the beach, a cool drink and maybe a barbecue after a spot of gardening or fishing.

Wayne Jessop goes a step further in our letters this week, suggesting Waitangi Day should be scrapped. He quotes some powerful statements from the late Sir Paul Holmes, well worth another read. See Page 41.

No-one I saw in my travels on Waitangi Day, except at the official gatherings, gave a damn about the treaty, or the troublemakers for that matter. It would appear the endless griping has actually had the opposite effect and turned the general population against what should be a day to take a bit of pride in our great country.

For once, this year, the stirrers didn’t rate much of a mention, apart from Granny Harawira again successfully muscling into her apparently god-given role as Prime Minister Monitor.

How can anyone get so het up, on such a beautiful day?

Maybe fine weather helps. And speaking about good weather, it looks likely to continue with the settled summery run.

The good news is, it’s likely Pete Archer and his team will get a decent day for their

Thunderbirds are go

Here at RR headquarters there was a rousing cheer when news broke that Thunderbirds were coming back.

Not Paula Bennett and Tariana Turia breaking into a line dance, but the old television show with International Rescue’s puppets and rockets.

On the subject of digging up long lost characters, the English have just announced they’ve found Richard the Third. Seems the old king has been missing for, oh, a few centuries and someone decided he must be under a carpark. So they dug him up, took a DNA sample, and hey presto – they found the old chap.

Dry summer equals late cicadas – Bugman The cicadas are late this year and Ruud Klienpaste, aka ‘The Bugman’, believes the dry summer is behind it.

Cicadas live most of their lives as underground wingless nymphs digging burrows and feeding off the tree sap in roots.

Each summer a new generation digs its way out to transform from a burrowing nymph into a winged cicada; to fly, sing, mate and die before summer’s end.

with the cicada chorus, but Ruud believes the dry hard ground has slowed them.

“I don’t know if you have ever tried burrowing through soil that is rock hard from drought conditions,” says Ruud.

“It’s bloody impossible. You need a kango hammer, and cicadas don’t have kango hammers so they are waiting for some moisture and changes in relative humidity patterns to actually make their way out of the soil.

“But now it’s rained they could be announcing themselves any day.”

Cicadas spend most of their lives underground.

Hatching from eggs, they spend their first five to seven years as nymphs. As the nymphs grow they shed their skins, usually going through five stages.

“When they are ready to come out they come to higher levels in the soils, three or four inches, and once again shed their skin once more into adult cicada with wings,” says Ruud.

“They burrow out as nymphs, attach themselves to trees, split their back open and the adult cicada comes out.”

Another reason behind the lack of cicadas, says Ruud, is there may be fewer cicadas.

“Some years are good years, some years are bad years for cicadas,” says Ruud.

Tragic link

Drownings spark warning

A tragic link revealed between two recent sea tragedies in the Bay of Plenty has prompted a serious safety warning for those in and on the water.

It was revealed to The Weekend Sun that the woman who drowned at Mount Maunganui beach last weekend was visiting the Mair family of Katikati, providing support after the disappearance at sea of father of four Tim Mair, a week earlier.

Norwegian Vivian Telfer, 54, got into trouble while swimming near Sutherland Avenue on Saturday.

She was pulled from the ocean by a surfer, but attempts to revive her failed.

Sources confirmed Vivian, who moved to Norway 10 years ago with husband Bruce Telfer, had been staying with the Mair family for a week.

Tim, 52, has been missing since

January 28 after the aluminium runabout he was in with four others capsized at Bowentown Bar about 5.30pm. Despite extensive searches, his body has yet to be found.

Tim and Vivian were both exPathfinder leaders at the Tauranga Seventh-day Adventist Church.

A church member says Tim was a pathfinder leader and counsellor, before Vivian ran the pathfinder programme.

The church is offering both families support and mutual friend Greg Nilsson, 51, has been searching for Tim on his jet ski this week.

“He was a very nice guy and was a good family man.”

Tim’s disappearance precedes a sharp warning from Bay of Plenty Regional Council harbour master Jennifer Roberts who says water users must comply with safety guidelines.

“We want to stress that wearing a life jacket is one of the most important things any one on the

“It’s important to us that everyone out on the water is aware of the risks, the conditions, other water users, and the bylaws that they must adhere to.

“The law requires that everyone on a recreational craft must wear a lifejacket when any situation or condition presents an increased risk to the safety of persons on board, and because it is often hard to tell when that situation or condition may arise, and because it often will arise very quickly, it is far safer for everyone on board to be wearing a life jacket at all times.”

Swan hit and run Cyber-bullying on harbour

Bay warning

Shocking footage has surfaced showing a jetboat intentionally running down and killing black swans on Tauranga Harbour. The DVD footage, aired on TV3’s Campbell Live show this week, shows two adults and two children in the jetboat laughing as they speed around the harbour hitting swans.

The footage, taken on Boxing Day, lasts about two minutes. In that time seven back swans were killed, with others making a narrow escape.

Under the Animal Welfare Act, the boaties could face a maximum fine of $100,000 or up to five years’ imprisonment.

Dead whale on Papamoa Beach

A 12 metre sperm whale carcass washed up on Papamoa Beach this week requiring two diggers to bury it at the high-tide mark.

The whale was spotted about 500metres off the coast of Papamoa Beach Road near Stella Place around 4pm on Monday. By 6pm it had washed ashore. It remained under guard overnight until DOC and iwi met to bury the carcass on Tuesday.

DOC first received reports of the whale near the Alderman Islands a week ago before being spotted near Mayor Island last weekend.

The jaw bone was removed and gifted to iwi before the remains were buried.

Naturist to defend charges

A Tauranga naturist accused of causing offence by mowing his lawns naked will defend the charges in court next month.

Andrew Pointon, 47, faced two charges of offensive behaviour when he appeared in Tauranga District Court this week. The charges stem from allegations Pointon, a naturist for more than 20 years, was allegedly mowing his lawn naked on January 5 and March 31 last year, while two young children and adults looked on.

Big crowd at yachtie’s funeral

Mount Maunganui Surf Lifesaving Club was bursting at the seams on Monday as crowds of people turned out to farewell yachtie Richard Spraggs.

In memory of the former surf shop designer’s relaxed approach to life, people came clad in Hawaiian shirts and jandals to honour the 58-year-old sailor who died in Thailand earlier this month.

Spraggs, as he was known to friends, was a long time Mount Maunganui resident who moved to Thailand in 2011.

He was onboard his yacht La Zingara moored in Chalong Bay in Phuket on January 26 when he died attempting to prevent a collision with another vessel.

Calls for laws to be set up to control cyberbullying have been heightened following the death of a Bay of Plenty teenager.

Hayley-Ann Fenton, 15, took her own life after being threatened by her ex-boyfriend’s wife, Bay of Plenty Coroner Wallace Bain has found.

In his ruling, Wallace says cyber and text bullying is a worrying trend and he wants new laws introduced around digital media.

In a separate case, Micaela Pinkerton-Stothers, 17, took her own life in July, 2011, after she and her boyfriend had split.

It was initially reported she took her own life because she was being targeted by bullies on a Facebook page posting hateful messages about her being pregnant and having an abortion.

However, it turned out the teen hadn’t been targeted by bullies and had set up the page herself.

Wallace is repeating previous calls for laws to control cyber-bullying and cyber-communication be brought forward as a matter of some urgency.

He says cyber-bullying is something many people do, whether some think they’re doing it or not.

A Tauranga teenager, who wishes not to be named, says people can say a lot of hateful things, especially on Facebook.

“Some people don’t think about what they’re saying and how it can affect those they are talking about.

“Something needs to be done to stop people from being targeted by bullies.”

A clandestine lab in Katikati exploded last year, sending noxious fumes into the air.

Destruction

Chemicals used by meth labs are causing massive damage to New Zealand sewerage systems, a water quality scientist says.

In 2012, 11 P-labs were uncovered by police in the Western Bay of Plenty.

Tara Okan, from water monitoring firm DCM Process Control, says he discovered the damage after unexplained breakdowns at a North Island treatment plant stopped once police closed down a nearby methamphetamine – or P – lab.

Although the P-lab was not in the Western Bay of Plenty area, Tara says the chemicals can degrade pipes, kill bacteria in treatment and create explosive gases.

In December a clandestine P-lab exploded in Katikati and black smoke could be seen billowing from the property.

Decontamination tents were sent up at the scene.

A witness who was at the scene says about 10 police cars were at the scene half an hour before the explosions were heard.

She says a helicopter was also hovering overhead before any explosions took place.

Police, fire and ambulance were at the scene.

During an operation in November, police seized drugs, cash, firearms and the components of a methamphetamine lab during a raid in Pyes Pa. Along with the components, police found precursor chemicals, cannabis plants and a stolen Subaru car.

“We’ve made no secret of the fact that these types of operations will continue until the message sinks in and we break this cycle of offending,” says detective senior sergeant Greg Turner.

“There are some people who are clearly delusional if they think we will not catch up with them sooner or later.”

Vehicle thefts top offence The number of vehicle thefts reported to Western Bay of Plenty Police in December 2012 increased compared to 2011.

In December 2012, 45 stolen vehicles were reported to police, an increase on the 29 from the same time period the previous year.

Police are warning people not to leave their vehicles unlocked, with the majority of the thefts occurring because the vehicle was left unsecured.

Inspector Scott Fraser says it’s the same thing police have warned people about in the past.

He says in the majority of the thefts personal items such as wallets, phones, sunglasses, coins and navigation systems were left in view of passing potential offenders.

“Our advice is simple; just remove the temptation. Lock up your vehicles and make sure that you take with you anything that might appeal to a thief. If you can’t carry it with you, at least make sure you stash it away from view.”

Chasing the waves

Long-time friends and surfing rivals Guy Rancher and Craig Anderson are preparing for a hometown showdown in the national longboarding series next month.

After seven years out of the water, Papamoa’s Guy Rancher took out second place in the Hyundai Tour’s over-40 section last year, but this year he is determined to go one better.

Guy, who won the Sandy Bay competition in Northland last weekend – beating the Mount’s Craig Anderson who placed third, was second in the series last year

after seven years in Europe.

“He was the confirmed favourite after winning Raglan but I knocked him out. It was great from my perspective to get the monkey off my back.

“He’s a very good surfer – I’ve tussled with him over the years.

We’ve got a friendly rivalry. I need to keep doing well and Craig not to do so well,” he says with a chuckle.

Guy challenges anyone who thinks longboarding is for lightweights, saying they can face some tough conditions such as the fierce surf they battled in Sandy Bay last weekend.

“It was a hard tussle. It was just carnage, big eight foot facing waves coming in throughout the

three days which snapped my board.” Both Guy and Craig have been involved in longboarding since the early day of longboard competitions back in 1994 with the ‘Malfunction’ event – both winning many regional events throughout the years.

“Some of us still hanker about the good old days, but it’s still a great tournament to be involved with. A lot of people tell you they go there for the camaraderie, for the friendly vibe, and that’s what it is all about.”

Now the focus is on the next event at Port Fitzroy in Taranaki on February 16-17 before a hometown showdown at Tay St on March 1-2.

Tauranga elderly discuss city’s development Tauranga’s ageing population has been in full voice as they look to help develop the city’s active ageing strategy.

In a New Zealand first, Tauranga is seeking feedback from residents over 65 years old following a global movement to improve cities to meet the needs of ageing populations.

Based on a World Health Organisation topic-based framework, Tauranga City Council is leading a multi-agency project to develop an age-friendly city and has been running community workshops to hear directly from residents.

The process is the result of projected statistics for 2016 which show people over the age of 65 will outnumber younger people living in the city, while between 2006 and 2031, the number of people over 65 who live in Tauranga is predicted to double, with one in four being over 65.

Age-Friendly City project manager Rochelle Friend says the process is important as they need to explore what will make the city

more age-friendly and identify potential opportunities to achieve this. “It’s really exciting and it’s something quite different from anything else. It’s something positive and proactive.

“We will be taking a community view approach.”

Rochelle says the WHO framework supports and enables older people to live in security, enjoy good health and continue to participate fully in city life.

Otumoetai resident Harry Kiriakidis, 78, thinks it is an excellent and necessary idea to be brought forward in the community.

“There are a lot of issues that affect the whole population and we are trying to highlight them.”

He says it is about raising awareness on the issues which are obvious but do not get addressed.

“Every time we have got holidays we have skateboarders along the footpath. The council should say

‘right, you get caught during the day and we will confiscate the board for a week’.”

Matua resident Bob Shaw, 82, says the strategy should help incorporate an all-age friendly society where it includes people from skateboarders to people on mobility scooters.

“We need to be an integrated society. I’m opposed to the proliferation of rest homes.

“It puts people in ghettos and reminds me of the war in Germany,” he says.

Bob believes former National MP for Tauranga Bob Clarkson should be allowed to build a village for all ages allowing elderly people to sell their expensive homes and buy a cheaper one where the money can go back into the community.

Battle ready

Dressed in his hand-wrought suit of armour with helmet, sword and shield, Tauranga’s Charlie Tapsell looks like he has walked straight out of the medieval era.

Charlie, who leads the Tauranga combat and culture group Northern Horde, will be commanding the New Zealand team when they take to the field in France later this year for the Battle of the Nations tournament. The five-strong team go head to head with fighters from 25 other countries in a full contact battle – among clashing swords, axes, daggers and shields.

The fierce conflict conjures images of gruesome injuries, but Charlie stresses that full-contact has strict safety guidelines to ensure no-one gets badly hurt – including flat, blunt blades which will do little more than cut a cabbage.

“Broken fingers are quite common overseas, but the worse we have had here was a cracked thumb,” says Charlie, who like most other New Zealand participant wears authenticlooking armour he has fashioned himself the traditional way.

He first got involved in Medieval culture groups 16 years ago drawn both for the excitement of the battles and the satisfaction of making objects from his varied weapons to his costume and armour.

Charlie is most proud of his full contact helmet, which he made with the advice of the top armourer in the country.

“I actually made it all myself and it protects me very well.

At the A&P Show the other day I was getting people up and they were given a weapon and they were going at me in full flight but nothing came through. I just got a few dents, that was all.”

Until 15 months ago Charlie and the other members of the Northern Horde had been fighting ‘controlled contact’ battles, where you controlled the force when you were hitting the opposition to ensure nobody got hurt.

“We had been seeing these videos of these crazy Russians hitting each other really hard, these videos were surfacing on the internet

Medieval village plans revealed International medieval battles and events could soon be held in the Western Bay with plans for a ‘medieval village’ at TECT All Terrain Park.

Tauranga’s Northern Horde medieval group leader Charlie Tapsell says the group’s ultimate goal would be to host the international Battle of the Nations tournament which will attract teams from 25 countries when it is held in France later this year.

“We want to attract international interest. This big festival gets moved around every year and we are hoping that in 2020 we could hold it here.

“They are normally held in castles but we don’t

have any of those here, but we think this would be ideal.”

Charlie says building is planned to begin this year, but the extent of what they can do will be limited by fundraising.

“We want to build a series of authentic buildings from a Viking longhouse to a Roman-style building and Medieval roundhouses. It would be a playground for re-enactors across New Zealand and beyond.”

He says the village will also offer a chance for enthusiasts to build items from the era they have a special interest in, such as traditional ovens.

Saving children a paramount challenge in Bay One of the paramount challenges for our community is the safety of our children.

New Zealand has a shocking record for child murders, abuse and suicide.

It is to our great shame that the Bay of Plenty has some of the highest stats in New Zealand. It takes a village to raise a child (Confucius). But all too often in New Zealand parenting responsibilities are being abdicated and too many

children are growing up in single parent families. Kiwi kids are our collective responsibility and it’s great to see Sir Owen Glenn taking the initiative to invest in an independent inquiry into domestic violence, dysfunctional families and in particular child abuse. Sir Owen has gathered some of the country’s top academics, doctors and psychological experts onto a panel to determine appropriate interventions and pathways forward.

The Minister of Health has made an attempt to understand issues facing our nation’s children. A similar intervention to Sir Owen’s initiative is the work of The Child and Youth Mortality Review Committee (CYMRC), a ministerial

appointed group established to review deaths of children and young people aged 28 days to 24 years.

The task of this committee is to find ways to prevent such deaths in the future.

Regional expert committees sponsored by local district health boards meet monthly to make a range of recommendations to a national committee.

Regional recommendations are merged nationally to better understand the lives and deaths of our youth and inform efforts to prevent similar deaths in the future.

Over the past two years the Bay of Plenty committee has studied in-depth suicide and sudden infant deaths and it has taken it upon itself to initiate critical and strategic

interventions at the local level. May I applaud this local committee, a group of high level professionals who are freely giving their time and expertise to make our community a safer place.

The national chair Nick Baker issued a challenge in his fifth report where he notes there is a lack of or no ‘socket’ for CYMRC to ‘plug’ into, to provide information to activate a ‘machine’ that will action and fine tune preventive interventions.

Where the Government has fallen down is in not following through on the experts’ advice. Resources must be made available on experts’ recommendations. Children are counting on us.

I thought last week’s one-day conference run by Tauranga Chamber of Commerce to discuss trends in local government reform ended really positively.

The audience was made up of a mix of business people, community representatives, iwi and local government representatives. There were top quality speakers who set the scene brilliantly – discussing overseas and national trends; the changing environmental, corporate, economic and political conditions; what is happening in local government reform nationally, and the implications for the Bay of Plenty.

There was no consensus that a structural change in local government in the Bay is necessary or desirable.

There was certainly an acceptance that we will be affected by the reform process in some way and need to be proactive about shaping any possible outcomes.

It was agreed that we should have a clear vision of what we want for the Bay of Plenty and what the issues are that will need to be addressed to get us there. Only then, can we decide if and what sort of reform is for us. A think-tank or forum involving business, community, iwi and local government was suggested to take these discussions forward and the Chamber of Commerce groups across the region agreed to undertake a facilitation role.

Changes ahead as Parliament resumes In the last couple of weeks Parliament has restarted for the year.

We’ve elected a new Speaker, the Rt Hon David Carter, former Minister of Primary Industries, and there has been a Cabinet reshuffle. Through this, I have become a Cabinet Minister, responsible for the portfolios of Labour and Energy and Resources.

In the labour area, strengthening our health and safety regime will be a big part of the job. The Pike River Royal Commission made it clear that improvements are required. In energy and resources one significant focus will be developing our country’s oil, gas and minerals resources while also looking after our environment.

Irrigation investment National is committed to lifting longterm growth in our rural economy. We want to ensure that New Zealand farmers and rural businesses stay at the top of the

global game. This is a key element in our plan to build a more competitive and productive economy.

Last year the Business Growth Agenda set a target of raising the value of exports to the economy from 30 to 40 per cent of GDP by 2025. Our primary sector is an important contributor to export earnings, accounting for 72 per cent of merchandise exports, and access to reliable water is critical for primary production.

Just prior to becoming Speaker of Parliament, David Carter announced that the Government is establishing a company to act as a bridging investor for regional water infrastructure development and we’ll invest up to $400 million in regional-scale schemes to encourage third-party capital investment.

Further, David made it clear that the Government has earmarked $80 million for the initial stages of the company’s operation.

No laughing matter

Rethinking local government We are indebted to Max Mason and Tauranga Chamber of Commerce for instigating last Friday’s regional reform on looking for better ways of structuring local government in the Bay of Plenty.

The water infrastructure development fund will help get regional water storage and distribution schemes started. It’s about farming smarter. A well-designed storage and irrigation infrastructure will support new job opportunities, a clear focus for the Government, which will have a flow-on effect for all New Zealanders.

It will also be better for the environment, as these schemes will lead to more efficient water use, and can provide for the replenishment of aquifers and the restoration of stream and river flows.

The opportunity to take a stake in developing regional-scale water infrastructure is new for private investors, and that’s why it’s appropriate for the Government to take a bridging investment role to ensure the right projects can get underway.

Reliable irrigation represents a major step in unlocking economic potential for New Zealand, having our tradable sectors growing strongly and delivering on the Government’s economic growth goals.

When my wife picked me up from the Chamber of Commerce conference on local government last Friday night she wanted to know why all of the senior council members were laughing so much.

The outstanding speaker of the day was Bob Harvey (current chair of Auckland Waterfront Development and past mayor of Waitakere City) who was inspirational, and challenged us all to think outside the square. A most interesting statement was his call to Tauranga to “come and get Auckland’s port”. He also strongly advocated for rail, saying that a dedicated public rail system between Tauranga and Auckland could be a game-changer.

He quoted his old friend and past Auckland mayor Sir DoveMyer Robinson, saying “it’s wrong to be right too soon” – noting that now was the time for Tauranga and the Bay. Steven Selwood, chief executive of the New Zealand Council for Infrastructural Development, also encouraged us to be bold.

He opened by describing how Denmark built a bridge to Sweden, saying the huge cost was covered by a $60 toll to compete with the ferry service. He urged delegates not to get bogged down by the cost, but to get the strategy right first. He provided evidence that scale does matter, and that while shared services was a good interim solution, it is very hard to sustain over time.

They might have just been sharing some internet joke but it is a worry to have that same reaction to so many of the speakers’ messages during the conference.

The speakers were great, describing the implications of the current changes in our society, but their message was not a laughing matter.

Forget about the Auckland message or the new local government policies. A third of our small towns are past a tipping point for population decline and within just a few years two-thirds our small towns will be disappearing. Only four centres, Auckland Wellington, Queenstown and probably Hamilton or Tauranga will be showing any growth. This is a worldwide trend but already New Zealand women are not meeting a replacement target of 2.1 babies and immigration is well below meeting the deficit. It is not the total population slowdown that is our main problem. There is a massive shift of young people to the big cities.

There is nothing new about young people being attracted to city life but currently over 80 per cent of all babies born in New Zealand are born in Auckland. They are growing up and working in Auckland and this is why the other problem we have of an ageing population is hitting our smaller towns first.

It has already happened in Australia, and the Northland and Auckland councils reported this week that there are no regulations in Aotearoa governing this situation. This madness must be resolved before any introduction of GMO here.

Fishing fundraiser for charity Wish 4 Fish, the charity that provides access to fishing for the disabled, is fundraising with a fishing competition.

Tauranga Sports Fishing Club is providing the venue and the weigh-in facility for the competition, which is primarily for bottom fish.

There are $500 cash prizes for each category (snapper, king fish, kahawai) with the big money going to the average weight. There are also competition categories for the heaviest mixed catch, trevally, gurnard, terakihi, and a spot prize for children.

Entry costs individuals $40 or $120 per team with a four person maximum and $15 for children.

Fishing starts 6am Saturday February 23 and finishes at 4pm with the weigh-

in at 6pm. Prize-giving is at 7pm.

“It’s about promoting ourselves, lifting the profile and raising some money,” says Bryce.

Wish4fish is a registered charity aimed at giving the disabled and less mobile the opportunity to go fishing. Bryce is presently chair-bound following severe spinal injuries suffered in 2007. While in traction he came up with the idea of allowing people of all ages, with physical and mental disabilities and impairments, the opportunity to enjoy salt water recreational activities such as day trips and fishing trips.

A magnificent display on show Bay of Plenty Bromeliad Club member and Tauranga resident Maxine August has been growing bromeliads for about eight years and will be selling her favourite variety ‘Vriesea’ at the club’s open day next week.

On Wednesday February 13 Tauranga Yacht and Powerboat Club will be filled with hundreds of bromeliad plants.

With about 100 bromeliads in her garden, Maxine says her collection continues to grow each year.

She has set aside a patch in her garden dedicated to bromeliads.

“I like them because even though there not flowering they’ve got lovely foliage all the year round.”

Club member Lynley Breeze says the open day offers a magnificent display of these unique plants and infor-

mation on bromeliad cultivation.

There will be a display of cutting off pups (young bromeliad plants) and members on hand to answer any questions about the growth of and care of bromeliad plants.

“It’s a way of building up your collection quite quickly,” says Lynley.

Bromeliad plants originate from South America and Lynley says although they are very unusual flowers, they can be vibrant in colour.

“They’re brilliant colours, they’re easy to look after and they do very well in this area.”

Bromeliad spot prizes and raffle plants are available.

Doors open 12.30-2.30pm. Entry is free.

Giving it his best shot Welcome Bay para table tennis player Victor Kamizona will give this weekend’s nationals his best shot.

Memorial Hall will come alive to the sound of bat on ball this weekend when New Zealand’s top disabled table tennis players compete in the national champs.

Among those battling it out on the tables will be Tauranga’s Victor Kamizona, who last year won gold the New Caledonian Open in the athletes with disabilities division.

Victor is rated a 10 on the 1-10 scale, with arthritis in his back prompting him to walk with a slight stoop. Ratings from one to five are for wheel-chair bound athletes. He is determined to play his best this weekend to help him improve his grading and start his preparation for the Oce-

ania Regional Para Table Tennis Championships in Canberra in November. Victor, who rediscovered table tennis 10 years ago as a way to help him keep active, is aiming to compete at the World Table Tennis Para Games in China next year and at the Rio Paralympics in 2016.

“That’s the aim, but my first goal is just to beat the Aussies in Canberra.”

National Para Table Tennis coach John Tuki, also from Tauranga, will be juggling his coaching with managing the tournament. John, who is a top player himself in the open game, is hoping the tournament will help his players as they

start to prepare for Canberra.

“I’m trying to get my players up to par. The Oceania champs are open to anyone, but they need to be well placed to get to the World Para Games in China next year.”

He says the nationals are very important for those wanting to get to Australia to identify what their strengths and weaknesses are, and what they need to work on so they can get results in Canberra.

“I started from scratch. I just used it as a way to lose weight – I lost 53 kilos in 10 months just playing table tennis.”

Screening our stories Western Bay residents will soon be able to see a lot more of the region on the small screen with the first programme by newcomers Grey Street Television Studios set to air in a fortnight.

Studio director Hamish Denton says they will be producing programmes to air on regional station TV Central in the mission to show more of the rich Bay of Plenty life.

“There is nowhere at the moment Tauranga can see themselves on TV or have a voice on TV, but this will change that.”

The studio is a joint venture by four seasoned Tauranga broadcasters.

Hamish Denton and Matt Minnell are excited about filming Tauranga stories and sports for Grey St TV Studios.

Hamish, together with fellow NZ School of Radio director Matt Minnell, has teamed up with television actor Fred Stewart and former Canterbury Television CEO Trevor Egerton.

Trevor also set up Prime TV and has been involved in rebuilding CTV since the Christchurch earthquakes.

The TV production company is initially focussed on weekly shopping and sports shows with hopes for more in the future.

The first half hour `Shop Plenty’ show set to be screened in the week from February 18, while a sports show should be on air in

two months’ time.

The studio will be run in association with the neighbouring NZ School of Radio, which will provide audio work and is adding TV presenter courses to its programme.

Hamish says there has been good feedback to the shopping show, which would showcase eight businesses per episode, and was also expecting strong support for the sports show.

“There is so much sport in Tauranga and so many great sportspeople – so we want to showcase that talent and to offer a place where you can see local sport.”

It is hoped Bay of Plenty Steam-

ers coach Kevin Schuler will host the 30 minute programme which will have a talk show format. It will focus on all sports in the area, with two guests from different codes each week. Both programmes will be aired on TV Central about three times a week.

The studio will be available for filming commercials and for Tauranga link-ups by the major networks.

“Everyone is going to Auckland because there has been no studio for them to shoot their commercials in but this changes that. It will help keep the talent and jobs in Tauranga.”

Government’s latest fiddling with councils Elected members from all over the Bay of Plenty, media and sector interest people attended a worthwhile conference on the way forward for Local Government last Friday.

The purpose was to be proactive in response to the Government’s latest fiddling with the Local Government Act. This Act is the remote control mechanism used by Government to dictate largely what your councils can and cannot do.

Mayor Stuart Crosby said in his opening address that it appeared to be a badly drawn up piece of legislation. At first reading it seems that way. If we have the intention right, then it is meant to be a step forward but, and it’s a big but, it’s likely that it will have to be tested in the Courts for definitions, precedents, etc and other legal consequences. Likely to equal more expense, delays and frustration if this is how it all happens.

A practical way

Contrary to media reports, this conference was not about amalgamation of councils – in fact a theme that ran through various speakers was that councils sharing of information and services and alignment of regulation are a more economic and practical way forward.

Councils have been doing some of this for a while now through BOP Local Authority Shared Services (BOPLASS) with some success at cost savings. We are now moving to Stage 2, into the more difficult areas but with the object of further reducing costs for ratepayers. Interesting that one speaker said that council amalgamations rarely produced demonstrable savings. My experience concurs with that and in fact where the Tauranga and the Mount amalgamation was concerned, it’s my view it cost – plenty – but a lot of cost was masked by time and quantity. A process which doubled the service but trebled the cost.

Public water supplies

At the conference I spoke to former TCC CEO Alan Bickers, who is now a consultant and on the Governments advisory board looking at supply of community infrastructure. My particular interest is the future control of public water supplies as noted in last week’s column. Alan told me that 37 per cent of NZ water supplies are below national standards and people have to boil their drinking water. I gained the impression that the simple answer in some people’s thinking – both consumers and Government – is to privatise or to use a more publicly palatable term – corporatise.

(That’s just another PC mechanism to wrest control from public ownership in my view.) It’s just semantics to talk like this and the answer is simple if public health is the genuine concern. Central Government just legislate standards and councils must comply. In the end it’s the consumer who will pay and in my simplistic approach you should only pay for the actual cost of processing/treating water and delivering it to your home. No tax content, profit/surplus, directors’ fees, CEO fees (Mark Ford CEO of Auckland’s Metrowater gets around $640,000). Assurances that the public interest will be protected are good only for the time

of issue in my experience (witness Max Bradford’s assurances when electricity supplies were taken from public ownership).

Still no ending

The CEO appointment process continued during the week without a conclusion. Hopefully it’s getting there but with all the requirements set down by Central Government elected members have to be super-cautious – getting process wrong can be disastrous. In fact the process seems to be more important in the legislation than the result. There is an independent consultant who runs this process and it’s not cheap. The cost of the process for the CEO appointment last time was more than $75,000 incl. GST. Council is using a different consultant this time and it may be a bit cheaper, although costs are still mounting. Candidates get all expenses paid, including travel, accommodation, etc to attend interviews. And some expect to be treated like royalty. Happily none of those have succeeded historically and are unlikely to succeed this time. Despite what some

ratepayers have told me – “I’d do the job for half the price” and other emotive statements, it’s highly unlikely that that would happen. This is a pressure-cooker job juggling council policy demands, ratepayer demands, elected members, media, staffing, too much to do at the end of the money etc. The pool of suitable applicants able and willing to do the job is small, contrary to urban myth.

Savings on staff

From the draft annual plan meetings we learn that savings on staff salaries from the proposed reorganisation are budgeted at $1,471,000. At the other end of the spectrum some elected members wanted to drop the $2 wi-fi charge for connection to the internet at the library. Larry Baldock advocated this, saying when he was a Member of Parliament he used to park outside public libraries to get free access to the internet.

Mayor Stuart Crosby quipped “did you have to say that publicly?”.

Alterations to the 18th Avenue intersection outside the hospital won’t cost the ratepayers

as much as first estimated. Around $200,000 but it qualifies for a NZTA 53 per cent subsidy, so will now cost around $94,000.

Merivale’s surprise

Surprise, surprise but Merivale ratepayers who replied to a survey to fund the Merivale Community Centre extended services proposal emphatically declined. A supper room proposal to be built at the Crematorium brought an understandable negative reaction from Legacy Funerals benefactor and past councillor Greg Brownless.

As Greg told me, it took Legacy to put in the amenities it has at Tauranga Park next to TCC crematorium to galvanise council into action. He has a point.

Council will not be running a cafeteria – just letting premises.

Council/ratepayers got well and truly burned with the Café 100 at Baycourt debacle.

Libraries will spend $1,854,844 on books out of a total budget of about $8 million – of which about $7 million is ratepayer funded – about $132 per Tauranga ratepayer.

From memory, about one third of library members are not Tauranga ratepayers.

Te Puke show stopper to draw crowds this weekend Organisers of the Te Puke A&P Show are preparing for a busy event on Saturday when town meets county at Paengaroa.

Show committee chairman Roger Hintz is expecting a great line up of activities and a “big jump in trade exhibitors” will see the Paengaroa showgrounds packed with visitors.

Roger says Psa had prompted a big drop-off in exhibitors last year, but numbers had bounced back in 2013. “It’s got to be a good sign for the area.”

He is picking the event, now in its 107th year, to be a great

family fun day with a few new horse events, along with the old favourites including gumboot throwing, chainsaw sculpturing, shearing and animal classes.

The annual endurocross event which tests motorcyclists on a difficult course promises to be popular along with a new digger competition where you are tested on your ability to dig the perfect hole from behind the controls of a mini-digger.

JGeeks share the love New Zealand’s Got Talent finalists ‘JGeeks’ took time out of their busy schedule to bring some joy back into the Bethlehem College community on Monday as students headed back to school during a difficult time.

After trading from its current location on State Highway 2 for nearly 10 years, the lease came due for renewal and owners Nat and Ann Maree Thompson decided to take the opportunity to move into the thriving Bethlehem Town Centre.

“We have been keeping an eye on the town centre for a while now and there has definitely been a steady increase in foot traffic and popularity of the site, along with a huge amount of parking and a wide range of retail shops.

“The combination certainly suited our type of business,” he says.

Currently located next to Hell Pizza, the two businesses have complimented each other as a onestop-shop for evening entertainment, with customers commonly grabbing a pizza and DVDs. However, traffic congestion has caused problems, an issue Nat says will be instantly fixed with the move.

The store will be re-opening on Waitangi Day in the new premise, located below Configure gym.

Inside will be an extensive range of Blu Ray, DVD, games and treats, including an ever-changing selection of imported American candy.

Valentine’s Day has been blooming in Whakamarama – literally.

The team at Highland Roses are working overtime to have many of their 13,000 plants flowering at the perfect moment.

Nursery owner Alistair Grant, runs the 16,000 sqm greenhouse business with his wife Anne Mackersey and describes preparing the roses to be ready for the annual day of romance as a major

challenge that relies on a little help from the weather.

The pair have been growing roses for 23 years.

While they are beautiful to behold, he says growing roses turned out to be a thornier job than they had imagined.

“A lot goes into it. They are very capital intensive and take a lot to get them blooming just at the right time.”

With year-round production of cut-flowers in their greenhouse Alistair says they need to make sure there are batches of flowers going out twice a week, but a huge push goes into having a large part of the crop ready for

February 14 sales.

“We have to start in December getting the plants ready. There is a lot involved in manipulating the plants, but we need to hit the ground running this week or we miss the sale.”

This Valentine’s Day they are hoping 13,000 roses (75 per cent red) will be ready thanks to the weather, but says the old days when roses were the only choice on Valentine’s Day have passed with roses now competing with other flowers, jewellery and varied gift options.

More savings, better futures Funds in KiwiSaver could grow to $731 billion by 2066 – under the right circumstances, according to a report by Infometrics.

If the scheme becomes closer to universal, covers 80 per cent of employees, and if contribution rates grow to 10 per cent to fund a comfortable retirement for younger New Zealanders, this projection is believed to be true. This is also assuming new KiwiSaver contributors phase up by 1 per cent each year, until they

reach 10 per cent. KiwiSaver funds under management are currently $13 billion.

The report, commissioned by the Financial Services Council, projects this option would inject an extra $52 billion into the New Zealand stock market by 2066. It is estimated up to an extra $3 billion will be available to invest in companies not listed on the exchange and retirement incomes would increase by an extra $300 a week on top of the pension.

About 50 per cent of employees currently have KiwiSaver accounts and the average employee in KiwiSaver is saving 5 per cent of their income.

“Our focus is to get quality toys and clothing selling at great prices, that’s it really.”

They say the store focuses on clothing and toys for newborns to children five years old – as that is the age where children grow fast and clothes are always being replaced. “That’s our major focus.

Children are key to water safety Educating Tauranga’s children is the key to achieving water safety, according to Team Shorebreak swim coach and sportswoman Sheryl McLay. Taking up coaching after she swam the Cook Strait in 1982 and the English Channel in 1983, Sheryl admits water safety must begin with children under the age of 12.

“If you want to create a cultural change, that’s where you need to start.”

It was because of this idea that Sheryl, along with her other coaching commitments, organised a pre-Christmas under 12-year-olds programme in the lead-up to the busy holiday period.

“It was very successful. We had a group of 12 kids who came down every week for six weeks.”

The children were educated on channel, tides, currents and swells, in what is seen as an environment for safe opportunities.

This not only provided children with important water knowledge, but may have helped reduce the parent’s disregard for water conditions, says Sheryl.

“Most adult drownings are about people making poor decisions. I think with adults

Sheryl says a respectful relationship with the environment is needed when it comes to water safety and people need to slow down when it comes to making waterbased decisions.

A series of weekly coaching clinics for open water swimmers aged from 50-70 years old is also run to teach swimmers responsible swimming tactics.

“I just want to make it about learning and then they can decide what to do with it.

“At their age, to learn new skills and get involved is great.”

Animals, animals and more animals A bright hello to everyone.

This column is about our furry, feathered, gilled, large and small friends… animals, and the importance of children growing up amongst them.

At Kidiwise we have chickens, guinea pigs, Ollie our resident rabbit, Ginny our Schnauser and recently we have had Lucy, the Labrador, with her nine new chocolate lab puppies.

Then there are the fish, swimming away irrespective of anyone’s wishes.

The role these animals play in children’s lives is enormous. They place children firmly in touch with nature by being able to watch Lucy’s tummy grow and grow and then have the wonder of seeing nine wee puppies develop and grow every day for the past three weeks. The chickens are a constant wonder of nature, and the children love feeding them pellets and scraps every day and finding this food recycled into eggs for the Kidiwise kitchen. Then there is a worm farm and its regular replenishment with scraps of newspaper, soil, air and water and seeing how this develops into soil for putting on the garden. Last but not least is Spikey the lingering cat our toddlers have befriended by feeding!

Probably the most important aspect of animals for children is bringing out the nurturing side of their personality. Our children, especially with Ginny the Schnauser, learn how to handle her. Ginny responds to nice, calm, gentle pats with a paw pat for more please. Ginny responds to quick

abrasive actions with a quick head turn and runs away. Animals teach children what actions they respond to. Children soon learn these same actions and acts of kindness work well with people too!

Children learn responsibility with animals. At Kidiwise the children feed the animals, help with cleaning the fish tank, washing the guinea pigs and replenishing the worm farm. The animals depend on the children to do these things for them.

The Kidiwise animals are shared among all the children. Children learn to share them and to take turns at looking after them.

Lucy’s puppies came for a visit.

By looking after animals, children unwittingly take a course in nature, recycling, caring, responsibility, sharing, turn taking, survival and diplomacy.

Second language no barrier

For the first time English Language Partners Bay of Plenty is offering a series of workshops for migrants with English as a second language to help break the language barrier holding them back from finding work.

For 10 weeks, starting February 21, Skills 4 Jobs will be held in Tauranga and will cover everything migrants need to know about finding a good job in New Zealand.

English Language Partners manager Philippa Cairns says the workshops are for people who have trouble speaking English and are finding it hard to find work.

“The main issue that’s stopping people from getting the best out of living in New Zealand is not being in work. The barrier really is often language

and lack of knowledge about how we look for jobs in New Zealand and what employers actually want to see.”

From a simple handshake to in-depth advice about where to find jobs and how to be interviewed, participants can learn the skills needed to find work in New Zealand.

“Little things like that make a big difference to the perception of the person by the employer.”

Workshops will also cover how to write a cover letter and Curriculum Vitae, how to use the internet to job search, and volunteer work.

Migrants must be New Zealand residents. There is a maximum of 10 people per class.

Registration is required. Workshops are at 120 Devonport Road every Thursday from 9.30am12pm. All workshops are free.

Extra help with science new addition Staff at the Kip McGrath centres in Tauranga and Papamoa are thrilled to welcome Emily Eastwood to their team of experienced tutors.

Emily’s vast knowledge in the field of science means the centres are able to offer tutoring in biology, chemistry and physics for the first time this year. This includes specialities in Year 13 biology and Year 12 chemistry and physics.

“We’re very excited about that,” says Tauranga centre director Judith Kramer.

“Parents want their children to be reaching national standard levels or above and if they need help, this is the best place to get it.

“We see many parents enrolling their children in Term 3, and often it’s too late, especially for end of year exams,” she says.

Kip McGrath centres offer free assessments so children and parents alike can decide if the programmes are for them, before they begin paying for tutoring.

Scholarships are available.

The Tauranga centre specialises in the Cellfield intervention, achieving great results in children with learning and reading difficulties associated with dyslexia. They also conduct screening for Irlen syndrome (visual perceptual difficulty).

Prisoners’ rights to read Lawyer’s donation grows education

For more than 10 years the Mount Lions and Lioness Book Fair has given the Tauranga community access to inexpensive literature, but this year it has turned a new page, giving prisoners access to books.

Hundreds of books sold at the 13th annual book fair on January 27-29 and for the first time the remainder of the books have been donated to Waikeria Prison.

For more than a year Tauranga Barrister John Holmes has collected books to donate to the prison and this year asked book fair organisers if they would like to help.

With an interest in New Zealand’s prison education system, John believes anyone in society should have an entitlement of access to further information.

“It’s just a simple recognition that those persons who are incarcerated have an entitlement to benefits of further education and improving their own situation.

Industry thriving for horticulture graduates

Despite continuing trouble in the Bay of Plenty’s kiwifruit industry, the world of horticulture is still very much alive – with a large range of jobs on offer throughout the Bay. Starting February 18, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s Certificate in Horticulture is the best way to crack into the industry, with a 34 week full-time course, says group leader Shelly Rose.

“It exposes people to all aspects of horticulture.

Whether they are leaving school, changing careers or taking up recreational gardening, this course is a great general introduction.”

Shelly says a wide range of ages apply for the course, but a passion for the outdoors is a must.

“That’s how we’ve designed the course, with lots of outdoor and practical activities.”

Throughout the two 17-week semesters, students will learn a range of skills, including driving tractors, learning, maintaining and sharpening equipment skills, propagation units and producing new plants, as BAY LEARNING ACADEMY A new centre for your Learning needs

well as field trips and guest speakers. Plant science is also a significant element, and work experience later in the course provides valuable understanding.

Shelly says there are plenty of jobs locally in the industry, with all graduates in the past two years securing jobs in the fruit industry, nurseries, gardening or more.

“There’s a whole range of options, that’s what’s so good about the course, they can see it’s not just about kiwifruit.”

With brand new facilities at the polytechnic, including a new greenhouse and shed, students will get the best treatment on offer in the industry.

A part-time course started on February 4, but places are open for late entries.

The sensational summer sunflower One of the signs of summer is sunflowers, which are primarily grown for their seed and the oil that it produces.

Sunflowers put on a spectacular display, with some species growing three to four metres in height and quite quickly.

As a micro green farmer having researched the amazing nutritional profile of sunflower as a micro green, I was also interested in its flavour. Actually I found the taste creamy and slightly butter like, with a fabulous non-stringy stem.

Sunflower greens are a nutritional powerhouse packed with vitamins A, B complex, D, and E; they also contain minerals including calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. So I began to think about what other summer vegetable I could match them with.

The answer was out in the garden, also tall and also related to the colour of the summer sun: fresh corn!

Corn is one of the most widely planted crops in the world, but I often wonder why I grow it when, now that it’s ready, my 12 corn seedlings costing around seven dollars and taking all that tender loving care, are compared with what I can buy at the side of the road: 10 cobs for five dollars and I’ll be lucky to have more than 15 decent cobs on 12 plants! At least I can eat my corn 15 minutes or so from harvest. And that is the secret!

Eating really freshly picked produce that is still pumping, cut down in its prime, sort of like a vegetarian with murderous intent. Or, in regard to micro greens, cut down in their infancy, denying them their growth into full maturity but capturing the essential elements that give flavour and nutrition.

Simple stunning summer salad with murderous intent Summer Sun Salad Two serves

Ingredients 2-3 corn cobs, freshly picked 2 large handfuls fresh cut sunflower micro greens 5 ripe tomatoes, diced ¼ red onion, sliced 4 slices cucumber, cut into small cubes A few parsley leaves, chopped Sea salt Fresh cracked pepper ¼ cup olive oil or avocado oil Juice of 1 lemon Method Grow your own sunflower micro greens by sprouting the sunflower seeds sold in pet stores (as they are not treated).

Sunflower micro greens take seven days to reach their nutritional peak.

Alternately come and see me at the Tauranga or Mount farmers’ markets.

Prepare the corn by de-husking and blanching in boiling salted water for about five minutes. Strip all the corn from the husks and cool under running cold water.

Gently mix with the rest of the ingredients, adding the oil, lemon juice and seasoning to dress. Serve at once while it’s still beating.

Here’s a helpful tip for cooking perfect brown rice. Brown rice is a great way to add fibre to your diet. Place 1 cup longgrain brown rice in 2 cups of boiling water. Bring water back to boil with lid one, before turning down to simmer for 25 minutes.

When finished, leave for 10 minutes to steam – this makes rice fluffy and not gluggy.

Try not to stir the rice when cooking, keep the lid on instead – it’s all about steam.

Add turmeric or stocks for added flavour.

Club hitting all new heights with freestyle BMX

The restart on Tuesday, February 12 coincides with Sport Bay of Plenty’s Bike Month and people are encouraged to give the sport a go.

This can be done by joining in on any Tuesday night throughout the month, when the club meets and newbies will be buddied up with a member.

Those who don’t have a bike can use the Rocket spare bike until they can buy one and the club will also provide people with a helmet. The club also has an eight-seated van in Katikati with space available if residents need a lift in to Tauranga.

The club, for people aged 11 and older, will meet at the 17th Ave skate park at 4.30pm. Anyone can tag along for three free meetings to see if the sport is for them.

The annual cycle commuting promotion is part of Sport Bay of Plenty’s Bike Month, with the aim of getting more workers and students permanently out of the car and onto their bikes.

Tauranga Council active travel coordinator Bruce Galloway, a passionate cyclist who has been biking to work for 30 years, would love to see more people commuting by bike.

“More people are definitely biking but it’s still a small proportion. It would be great to see more out there.”

Bruce says along with being good for your health, parking is more convenient because you don’t have to waste time finding a park, and you can take short-cuts through parks and along shared pathways.

Cycle commuters will be rewarded on Wednesday with refreshments and spot prizes at Go By Bike Day pit stops between 6.30 – 8.30am at Red Square, Maxwells Rd, Coronation Park, on the harbour bridge (by the marina), Cameron Rd (by Tauranga Boys’ College) and in Te Puke (outside the Western Bay Council building).

Cyclists are encouraged to pop by and grab something.

Bruce urged all cyclists to be aware of the road code on shared pathways and to “share with care”, always giving way to pedestrians.

He is helping cyclists discover Tauranga’s many bike pathways in a series of weekly tours covering different areas across the city, with the focus on central Tauranga on Wednesday (meet at The Strand Waterfront at 5.45pm, details 5777 000).

Iodine deposits the most significant deficiency New Zealand’s soil is deficient in a number of key nutrients. One of the most important deficiencies that affects our health is the low deposits of iodine.

Iodine is vital in the manufacture of thyroid hormones that help maintain our metabolism and support growth and development, especially in children.

It also supports normal brain development and is particularly essential for the development of healthy foetus and in young children. Some of the symptoms felt by people with iodine deficiency can include fatigue, weakness, depression and weight gain. However these

symptoms can be due to any number of factors, so it is not wise to selfdiagnose.

Severe iodine deficiency can lead to stunted growth, mental retardation in children and the occurrence of goitres – an enlargement of the thyroid gland that results in a swelling of the neck.

Goitres were common in the early 1900s and to resolve deficiencies, iodine was added to salt. Sanitisers containing iodine were used in the dairy industry and this led to iodine leaching into the milk supply.

This, and the combination of iodised salt, gave New Zealanders sufficient

iodine to remain healthy. However, lately deficiencies have crept back in owing to the dairy industry ceasing to use sanitisers containing iodine; the reduction of the use of iodised salt in manufactured foods, in home-cooked foods and the absence of salt from dining tables.

As of 2009 iodised salt has been added to commercially produced breads to address the lack of iodine consumption by the public. But the question is, what if you do not eat these breads or use iodised salt? Where do you get

your iodine from? Seafood such as fish and shellfish are good sources of iodine.

So is seaweed, which makes sushi a good food choice.

Traces are also found in dairy and eggs, as well as imported foods grown in iodine-rich soils.

As low consumption of iodine can affect our health, so can high consumption of iodine. Very high consumption of iodine can inhibit the produc-

tion of the thyroid hormones as well as cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, weak pulse, and even result in a coma. With this in mind I advise clients to first consult their doctors before taking iodine supplements and kelp tablets. Women considering falling pregnant or breastfeeding should also ask their doctors about taking iodine supplements.

Babies under one year old suffering whooping cough are most at risk of serious complications and more likely to need hospitalisation, says Dr Neil de Wet. Neil is encouraging pregnant women to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their newborns.

“Whooping cough can be a very serious disease for young babies.

“Having a whooping cough booster during pregnancy reduces the risk of mums developing whooping cough and passing the infection on. In addition, mothers will pass on some immunity to their baby.” After birth, Neil says whooping cough immunisations should be given when a baby is six weeks old, three months old and five months old, with boosters given to children at four and 11 years old.

Extra aid for disabled Disabled Western Bay of Plenty residents and their families can now access the support of local area coordinators. The Ministry of Health expanded this support on February 1 as part of a new model for supporting disabled people. Local area coordinators provide information and support to families of disabled children, as well as disabled adults. They help them plan, develop practical solutions to meet their goals and needs, and strengthen their connections with their communities. Ministry of Health spokesperson Chris Petch believes the move will be welcomed, as people have been asking for the service, and the four coordinators were keen to work over a wider area.

Continued focus on inflammatory arthritis We continue our focus on joint health and today look at arthritis caused by autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and juvenile arthritis.

A common feature of these problems is that the immune system attacks joints, leading to a cascade of faulty immune system responses. The outcome is the inflammation and degeneration of various joint tissues.

RA is the most common of these diseases and is characterised by an inflammatory attack against joint synovial membranes. This inflammation causes swelling, stiffness and pain and over time can cause joint deformities. RA is diagnosed by the presence of inflamed synovial membranes (synovitis) and is confirmed with blood tests including rheumatoid factor and CRP. Integrative medicine author Daniel Muller MD, PhD (2010) suggests the initial RA trigger may be a viral or bacterial infection. He comments that certain inflammatory chemicals produced by the immune system called cytokines have a major role in the disease process. These cytokines include TNF and IL -1 and 6. Some of the latest RA medications directly suppress these cytokines. Muller further notes that several natural compounds including curcuminoids in turmeric, ginger and omega 3 fatty acids also inhibit these cytokines.

My experience is that high dosages of these natural anti-inflammatory agents can take some of the heat out of RA, thus reducing symptoms. This can help drug therapy become more effective by reducing background inflammation. It is important not to take compounds like echinacea which stimulate the immune system, which can make the condition worse. I generally discourage herbal treatments for autoimmune disease as many herbs stimulate immune response. Our goal is to do the opposite by restricting the immune systems production of inflammatory prostaglandins and cytokines.

With supplements I use a cocktail of supplements

aiming to cover most of the anti-inflammatory agents. I normally start with a multimineral/vitamin/antioxidant complex. To this I add up to 1500mg of the Omega 3 EPA and 1000mg of DHA (about 10,000mg of fish oils), vitamin D, vitamin C and then a combined antiinflammatory complex that includes B vitamins, CoQ10, curcuminoids, grape seed extract and CoQ10 that can help with John Arts reduce systemic inflammation and improve often low energy levels. Most people notice a difference in three months.

Another night of thrills and spills The Flamecrusher Top Half Midget Series Round 2 and the Bay Champs Spring & Saloon Cars are coming to ASB Baypark next weekend in a night of competitive speed racing on the track.

Extreme riding headed for Te Puke Enduro Cross riders from around the country are competing at the Te Puke Show on Saturday.

Top motorcyclists from as far afield as Ashburton are converging in Paengaroa on Saturday for the annual Te Puke Enduro Cross event. Te Puke Motorcycle Club president Murray Jensen is excited about the event, held at the Te Puke A&P Show for the fourth year. Up to 50 riders from around the country are expected.

“Everybody comes here and they know it’s going to be a great event. Without blowing our own trumpet too much, it’s actually a pretty outstanding event.”

Murray says among the top riders competing at the event will be Australasian champion Jake Whitaker and highly-ranked Tauranga rider Jim Lowe-Pahie.

The event, combining the precision and control required in competitive trial riding with the speed and fitness of seven-eight hour enduro events, is the third event in the four-round summer KTM Extreme Series.

Murray, who got the idea for the Te Puke event after watching the Red Bull City Scramble in Auckland five years ago, says each event in the KTM series gets harder than the previous – with the Te Puke challenge “pretty tough” for riders.

Warning as children head back to school Students are heading back to school and Western Bay of Plenty Police are reminding motorists to drive sensibly around schools.

Bay of Plenty road policing manager, inspector Kevin Taylor motorists need to focus on keeping children safe on the roads.

He says children are particularly vulnerable as they travel to and from schools on foot, and on bikes

or scooters. “There will be a lot of excited and nervous littlies starting school for the first time and many others catching up with their friends after the long summer break. They will easily be distracted; losing awareness of their surroundings and an appreciation of the risks.

“Many youngsters also don’t often have the ability to accurately judge speed and distance, particularly

when crossing the roads. They may over-estimate how much time they have to safely get to the other side.”

Police patrols will be increased around schools in both urban and rural areas and will be enforcing parking offending and monitoring speeds. Police staff will also be checking that all occupants of vehicles are wearing seatbelts.

Karting series returns to Bay in May Karting enthusiasts are in for a treat when Kartsport BOP host a round in the northern circuit in May. Club captain Phil Green welcomed the news, saying members are excited to have the CRC Speedshow Top Half Series return to the Te Puke track.

“We are looking forward to the event making a return to our track. Our club hasn’t hosted a round of the series for the last two years.”

The four-round series begins in Mount Wellington on April 14, before

karters race in the Bay on May 12, completing the series with rounds in Avondale (June 16) and Tokoroa (July 7).

Series organising committee chairman Tim Ganley says after more than 20 years the competition continues to be regarded as an iconic series by racers.

“It’s featured in the early stages of the motorsport careers of a number of well-known and internationally-successful competitors, such as Aucklander Mitch Evans, who just last year became the first New Zealander to win the

Formula 1-stepping stone GP3 Series.” CRC Speedshow director Ross Prevette says the new sponsorship deal backing the series, aimed to link the popular car and motorsport show with one of the country’s most widely-contested motorsport categories.

Waihi Road work to start this weekend

Motorists travelling along State Highway 29 at Matapihi, between Te Maunga and the Maungatapu Bridge, are advised to expect delays as annual resurfacing works are undertaken this weekend.

The work begins on Sunday 10 February through to Tuesday 12 February, and will also run adjacent to State Highway 2 on the Waihi Road on-ramp.

Speed limit reductions will be in place at the locations of the resurfacing works. Drivers are advised to avoid these two areas at the times the works. If this is not possible, motorists should allow an additional 20 minutes.

NZTA’s Bay of Plenty state highway manager Brett Gliddon says the NZTA and their contractors are progressing well with their annual resurfacing works.

This work is weather dependant so if it is wet on the programmed days then this resurfacing work will be moved to the following weekend, beginning Sunday, February 17.

The Toyota Racing Series wraps up in Palmerston North this weekend with all eyes on Nick Cassidy’s determined drive to take a second series title.

Series director Mark Baker says after an uncertain start in the 2013 series due to switching teams, 18-year-old Cassidy had performed with consistency and persistence, making sure he finished every race and banked the most points possible.

“There is one question for race fans heading to Manfeild this weekend: can the internationals stop Nick Cassidy?”

Though he trailed the faststarting international drivers at Teretonga and Timaru, he took the narrowest of leads at the series mid-point two weeks ago. Coming north from the round at Taupo, he extended his advantage at Hamp-

ton Downs, winning one race in the process.

More than ever before this year’s championship is populated by some of motor racing’s names of the future – including graduate Mitch Evans, who flew to Europe this week to start his GP2 season build-up.

“With up to six of this weekend’s Grand Prix grid confirmed for European Formula Three, the Toyota Racing Series is fast making a name for itself as a place to race in January and February,” says Mark.

He lists other top racers as Austrian Lucas Auer, who shared the early series lead with Puerto Rico’s Félix Serrallés, British racer Alex Lynn who has won a three races and young Brazilian daredevil Pipo Derani who won a race at the opening round. These four were among the first six drivers announced by teams contesting the European Formula 3 championship and will be joined by 2012 TRS

graduate Raffaele Marciello and Australian Spike Goddard, with more announcements likely in the coming week.

With four intense weeks of competition behind them, the Toyota Racing Series drivers are race fit and ready to do battle.

They have completed 12 races and have already driven more than 2000 kilometres at the wheel of their fast and agile race cars as the championship arrives at its defining moment.

Te Puke driver Michael Scott, who is fourth in the rookie standings, will be aiming to finish the series well. Mark says Michael has taken a “wise and measured approach” to his first season of TRS, working with his engineer at Victory Motor Racing to get to grips with the car in his rookie ‘wings-and-slicks’ season.

Michael says he hopes to carry on the momentum he had built up over the series and continue to improve.

Omokoroa’s swimming again A year on since the old Omokoroa No 1 School pool was closed pupils have been quick to soak up the new 25m pool.

A month on, principal Chris Broadhurst is excited to see improved water confidence in pupils.

“They did miss out on the pool for a year but they have been making up for it. With

the weather we’ve had everyone’s been loving it and you are already seeing the benefit in the kids’ confidence.”

The 25m x 10 pool, which cost $310,000, replaced a 52-year-old 4m x 7m pool.

The money – which took two years to raise – came from grants from TECT, Bay Trust, First Sovereign Trust, Western Bay Council and school fundraising.

The long term plan is to have the pool heated and fully enclosed within a dome so it can operate year-round. The pool is being officially opened

Chris says the pool use was limited to pupils, and 35 families which had paid $100 for pool keys, with plans to open it up to for community use once the small old changing rooms are replaced. He is unsure when this will be, with them needing to raise another $200,000 for the cost.

Fruit initiative seeking help

An Otumoetai man is appealing for people to help him grow his newly-found charity, picking excess fruit from residents’ trees and delivering it to Tauranga Foodbank.

Martin Stewart started Community Fruit Tauranga a month ago after seeing a similar organisation operating in Auckland and realising how much fruit is wasted each year.

A full-time father, Martin is seeking families who can donate their fruit trees to the

cause, or people willing to pick the fruit.

“We ask people for trees, if they want to donate their excess fruit, and we arrange people to come and pick the fruit and all the fruit that gets picked goes to a foodbank or gets turned into jam for the foodbank.”

Martin used to cook for a living and is more than happy to whip up delicious batches of jam from the picked fruit. He hopes to carry the charity through winter and says he is also interested in root vegetables. “Hopefully there will be some people willing to help us out.”

Higher rent doesn’t always mean more income Most experienced investors understand that $500 a week for fifty two weeks a year means more money in their pocket than $550 a week with several weeks’ vacancy during the year.

So if maximising income from rental property investment comes from keeping their properties occupied, why do some landlords charge such high rents that their tenants move on whenever they get the chance and new tenants are slow to move in?

It is a fact of life that some investors fail to see the big picture and only look at the money in their pocket ‘right now’. They are blind to the possibility of rent loss down the track and don’t see that they might create dissatisfied tenants who move on when they find a better value option, thereby creating a cycle of high turnover and increased vacancy.

The problems don’t stop there.

Investors whose properties are ‘good value’ get more enquiry and can afford to be more selective

when deciding who will rent their property, while those asking over-priced rents get fewer and less well-referenced applicants.

Furthermore, if a property stays empty because the rent is too high, owners can get desperate enough to overlook a tenant’s patchy references; in the effort to get the highest income, they make themselves more likely to get less because poor references could mean greater likelihood of getting behind with the rent.

New investors can avoid a lot of common errors by making use of the expertise of their property manager. Many novice investors don’t think of asking their manager’s advice until something goes wrong. Investors who do their homework and tell their manager up front what their needs are find it much easier to keep abreast of what’s happening and avoid confusion.

All Investors should expect their manager to provide a monthly statement of all income and

expenses. Most also ask for an annual written report of state of repair (internal and external) and cleanliness as well as a mid-year written kerbside report of state of repair and cleanliness. They should also receive a six-monthly written report of the current rental value and the local area vacancy rate and an annual written report of the current reasonable selling price of the property. Owners should carry out an internal inspection of the property themselves once every two years so that they can visualise its state of wear and tear when maintenance and repairs are discussed. Most investors say it takes three to six months to get to know a property manager and their way of working. Until then it is best to require all expense items to be referred to the owner (other than emergencies) prior to the manager spending any money. After

the initial period, set a limit on the amount the agent can spend (usually about the equivalent of one week’s rent) without reference to the owner.

40 Court Briefs Arson accused together again The couple accused of manufacturing P and setting fire to an industrial building in Katikati can now associate with each other after having their bail terms altered.

Tracey Farrow, 26, and Terrance Jones, 35, appeared in Tauranga District Court where Judge Paul Geoghegan agreed to vary their bail.

Farrow had her bail address changed and her nonassociation order with Jones removed, while Jones had his non-association order with Farrow removed.

The couple’s lawyer requested the change as the pair are a couple and live together.

The pair, along with Maketu man Karl Goldsbury, 37, are charged with setting fire to the old King Kat factory in Katikati during a police raid of a property in December.

They will appear back in court on March 20 for a judicial intervention hearing.

Prince sentenced for attack

A Tauranga teenager has been sentenced to 150 hours for an unprovoked attack on a photographer.

Dylan Prince, 18, appeared in Tauranga District Court today where he pleaded guilty to one count of assault, wilful damage and possession of a pipe.

Prince was leaving the courthouse with 46-yearold Andrew Loader, who had appeared in court on sex charges, when he attacked the photographer taking photos of Loader.

Prince is alleged to have lunged at the victim, punching the camera out of the photographer’s hands, before punching the photographer in the face. The victim suffered soft tissue damage to his cheek.

According to the police summary of facts, Prince’s reason for hitting the photographer was “he thought the photographer was smirking and he just lost it”.

Judge Paul Geoghegan sentenced Prince to 150 hours community work for the attack and 40 hours community work for possession of the pipe.

He also ordered the teen to pay $1500.27 in reparations for damage to the camera, to be paid at $10 a week starting next week.

Trial for Te Puna attack accused

Four people accused of assaulting a household in Te Puna are set to go to trial at the end of the year.

Jack Simon Ake, 51, Rihiari Jarrod Borell, 27, Jasmine Hira Borell, 24, and Derek Michael Drewery, 26, are charged with assault following the attack on a household at Te Puna Road on November 23.

The group appeared in Tauranga District Court on Monday where a callover date for March14 was set. Police allege the four accused entered the Te Puna family’s property, carrying weapons including firearms, clubs, bats, a concrete trowel, a spade and a shovel.

Four people were taken to Tauranga Hospital by St John Ambulance following the attack.

The pair has been remanded on bail until the trial in the High Court at Rotorua.

Businessman to defend charge

A high-profile Tauranga businessman accused of seriously injuring a child will defend the charges at his next court appearance in April.

The man, who has name suppression, appeared in Tauranga District Court for a case review.

According to court documents the man is accused of assaulting an 11-year-old at a Mount Maunganui property in November, 2012.

The report says the child sustained head and back injuries and was taken to Tauranga Hospital where he spent two days receiving treatment.

The man was remanded on bail until April 11.

Adjournment in Te Puke stabbing A Te Puke man accused of stabbing three people in a dispute in Te Puke last year has had his case further remanded until August 8.

The 35-year-old man, who has name suppression, appeared in Tauranga District Court this week facing three counts of wounding with intent.

At about 9.45pm on June 27 police were called to a Boucher Avenue property where they found three men with stab wounds.

All three were taken to Tauranga Hospital.

During a previous court appearance, the alleged offender was deemed a flight risk and had his application for electronically monitored bail denied.

Then down by the Falls there are people young and older, families, and friends enjoying watching the Kayakers, picnicking on the rocks, walking up the river bed while the river is so low, and swimming in the little river pools. Wait till the pedestrian bridge is built, conflict will be removed between the vehicles and the pedestrians on the one way bridge. What is so special about the area is that we have as local people formed an enhancement group, and

they have done so much work, and have tirelessly achieved an amazing amount.

It is an environment where the spirit of cooperation between the local community, Tauranga City Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council is alive and well, and as a result there is a place for us all to enjoy, and treasure.

What they forgot to factor in to the home start (5% deposit, $63,000 land and house package, subsidised by the taxpayer, with the need to group such properties in close proximity), was the enormous on-going cost in policing and social welfare requirements.

Burdening people with housing debt plus rates, insurance and maintenance on top of time payments for cars and TV, fast food enticements, alcohol, gambling and drugs is asking for trouble.

For those young couples genuinely in need of a first home, yes - there should be some assistance, but minimal in comparison.

In the Western Bay we have static house pricing, lots of cheaper secondhand homes with retired people in their droves moving into new retirement accommodation, new housing at still under $400,000 and interest rates the lowest we’ve had for a long time.

Almost 30 years on Labour is once again proposing a social time-bomb with our money.

I wouldn’t be so worried, only that it is likely to become a reality with the political pendulum swinging dangerously close to New Zealand’s irresponsible left.

Wairoa water hazard

I was surprised to read the article by Andrew Campbell stating that the Wairoa River has been shortlisted for a high performance centre for Canoe Racing NZ. I would bring to your notice the report in October 2012 that the water quality in the river both at SH2 bridge and at McLaren Falls was ‘Poor’.

I did at the time contact Western Bay Council. “Talk to Regional Council” so contacted them. “It’s a Public Health Issue.”

Waited in vain for the Notices to be posted at the same time, observed cattle in the river at Miles Lane reserve.

This river flows through farm land way up beyond the three power stations and acts as a farm run-off drain flowing into the inner harbour.

So how can this river be considered for water sports?

Driving in danger There is a universal rule of self-preservation that applies to visitors to non-Western countries. You do not drive. Period.

One reason is that you do not have the skills to survive in the mayhem that passes for road rules in many of those countries. A second is that if something goes wrong, there is a chance that the locals will kill you if the accident does not.

If you have a local driver, the risk of an accident is lowered. If you are not driving, the probability of your surviving an accident scene increases. It is standard advice to leave the scene of an accident immediately.

In some countries, the simple fact of your not being a local makes you guilty of all crimes associated with the accident. An aid organisation working in Kenya should know these things. The local driver certainly knew them, and it is unimaginable that he allowed a young visitor to take the wheel.

I know them because I survived five years, three accidents, and hundreds of close calls in Africa and elsewhere. Caution, management, a dose of luck, and refusing to drive.

They all made a difference.

Accidents such as these are far more common than are ever reported, and are a key risk for any humanitarian effort.

Our hearts go out to the survivors, the families of those lost, and the well-intentioned young man for whom things went so desperately wrong.

The next step in this process is to hold an Open Day to share where this work is at with all landowners and other parties that many have an interest in Matakana Island.

Here’s some background to bring you up to speed: • Over the past 18 months many specialist studies have been completed to give a good understanding of the Island’s ecology, archaeology, landscape, cultural values, natural hazards and social and cultural well-being.

• The five hapu of Matakana have also developed their Hapu Management Plan that gives a clear indication of tangata whenua’s development aspirations for the Island.

• Some of the forestry landowners have developed a plan that shows their vision for the forested part of the Island. These plans were also taken into consideration during the development and assessment of options.

• Completion date for the development of the Plan is the end of March 2013. The Environment Court has directed this timeframe and process for the Plan.

Ginger advice thanks Corrie Taylor wrote an article about ginger easing the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy as advised

I’m as happy as Larry to report that although I’m not having chemotherapy I do have numbness in my feet from diabetes so I tried slicing ginger into water as hot as I could bear and soaked my feet until the water went cold.

The feelings of puffiness were relieved and the fresh feelings lasted for two days. Even hubby had a soak but he only got the fresh feeling.

I manage to save the ginger and water for three soaks and then reheat the water in the microwave when needed again.

So thank you to Desiree and Corrie for the article.

Beyond Waitangi Day Let’s do away with Waitangi day and all its farcical traditions.

Sir Paul Holmes stated why Waitangi Day should be scrapped far better than I ever could, and I quote: “Waitangi Day produces its usual hatred, rudeness, and violence against a clearly elected Prime Minister from a group of hateful, hate-fuelled weirdos who seem to exist in a perfect world of benefit provision.

This enables them to blissfully continue to believe that New Zealand is the centre of the world, no one has to have a job and the Treaty is all that matters.

“I’m over Waitangi Day. It is repugnant. It’s a ghastly affair.

As I lie in bed on Waitangi morning, I know that later that evening, the news will show us irrational Maori ghastliness with spitting, smugness, self-righteousness and the usual neurotic Maori politics, in which some bizarre new wrong we’ve never thought about will be lying on the table.

“This, we will have to address and somehow apply these never-defined

principles of the Treaty of Waitangi because it is, apparently, the next big resentment.

There’ll be lengthy discussion, we’ll end up paying the usual millions into the hands of the Maori aristocracy and God knows where it’ll go from there.

Nation divided after exploitation John Mills (Letters to Editor January 25) asks why the nation has become divided, because it wasn’t in the 1950s and 60s.

In the 1970s some Maori managed to persuade the politicians that a Treaty of Waitangi Act was needed and it was put into a law in 1975 with Jeffrey Palmer’s assistance. And a false Treaty.

Regrettably New Zealanders did not take a lot of notice at the time and it is

only lately that it has become glaringly obvious that we can blame egocentric politicians of both groups, who have exploited the situation to gain power and prestige for themselves, regardless of the good of the people.

As long as we continue to support these pollutions (an excellent word used by another writer) this problem will never be fixed.

A letter to Simon Tribalism, democracy

Through this paper, I address the Hon. Simon Bridges. Space doesn’t permit to repeat all that readers have said on this subject.

Very briefly it concerns the in-train proceedings of a Maori Party plan with cooperation of the Prime Minister John Key) to put in place a new written constitution requiring reference to the Treaty of Waitangi as a part of law.

This constitution, by its nature, will be irreversible, and neither parliament nor citizens will have the democratic right of input, as it will be governed by legal experts only.

This is our understanding from highly concerned constitutional experts in New Zealand and Australia who have been issuing urgent warnings about the inevitably diminished democracy, divisiveness, a rather tribally oriented society, citizens’ loss of control of our own government, not to mention the conducting of everyday business.

This implies total loss of control of our government For what in its place? We have to ask these questions.

With great urgency.

Meanwhile, the process is being conducted in secrecy, with only lip service to openness. Later this year the initial procedures are supposed to be completed. Only Maori are being actively informed. What about the majority? We need total publicity, and inclusion of the public without delay.

Why is it not happening, Simon Bridges? (Please don’t fob us off with platitudes etc. These are incredibly serious and urgent questions) Please honour your commitment to us and to your duty. Respond to this in this publication. Where is the promised publicity?

Tribalism was the culture that existed in New Zealand before. On the arrival of Europeans and the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, it was supplanted by democracy.

There are revisionists who would replace the democratic rights of the individual by a form of tribal authority and claim that representation on governmental boards and civil authorities should be by ethnicity and not democratic vote. They believe people are not equal. This was never promised nor intended by the treaty. There has been a marked reluctance by successive governments, judicial bodies and power groups in academia to see that the treaty is correctly interpreted and honoured and that democratic principles are maintained.

Council uncovered Good on you (The Weekend Sun) for publishing the article on Mr Stevenson’s study of Tauranga City Council debt. It’s good that your reporter didn’t approach the council for their own sanitised version.

It’s interesting to reflect that if they were to retire $20m of debt every year it would take twenty-three years to become debt free. That’s if they paid the interest in the meantime and borrowed no more.

It would be a good time for one of your reporters to investigate whether this is the full extent of their borrowing. For instance, does it include their borrowing from internal accounts such as the depreciation funds which are set up to replace assets?

It would be nice to see some real commitment to solving their (and our) problem by reducing spending rather than increasing rates.

Kiwi 80s music scene on a different planet If the past is, as they say, a different country, the New Zealand music scene in the early eighties was a different planet.

Those were days when Kiwi music was not played on radio, when rock music appeared on television once a week in the form of Radio With Pictures, when recording studios only really existed in Auckland and Wellington, and CDs were just a glint in the eye of some engineer at Philips.

And one day, over thirty years ago, a fifteen-yearold schoolboy auditioned for a local band and started one of the most fruitful and long-lasting musical collaborations in the Bay. This Saturday, at the Marchwood Blues Picnic, that original band are doing it again, nearly twenty five years after their last gig. It’ll be a little slice of Tauranga nostalgia or all those who remember but also – and I can confirm this after hearing them a couple of weeks back – after all these years they still sound bloody good.

Street. “None of us had any idea of how to play in a band,” says Graham now. “We didn’t know how to set up up a PA. In fact, I didn’t even know what a PA was.” There were no YouTube videos back in those days to tell you what to do, no books on “How to Start Your Own Band.”

Then came a challenge. They were booked for a wedding. Unfortunately, their drummer couldn’t play waltzes, an essential prerequisite for wedding bands.

The frantic search for a new drummer began.

Graham sought advice from Trevor Braunias, even back then considered the town’s leading guitar maestro, who worked in the old Mayers Music shop on Grey Street (now Music Planet at The Mount). Trevor said there was a school-kid who played really well but his mother might not let him join a band. Graham went and talked to his mother; she gave it the OK. So Ian “Beano” Gilpin went to an audition with the fledgling band and, as Graham puts it: “He was amazing!”

A success

The band went on to be probably Tauranga’s most Beasley Street L-R: Ian “Beano” Gilpin, Ross Shilling, well-known band through Graham Clark, Alan Crowe. the eighties, even supporting blues legend Koko Taylor. They were a cover band are “public address” systems, the big primarily, playing a thousand functions, but also speakers at the side of the stage along with a swag of original tunes. It was Graham’s first real stab at playing the blues and it stuck.

When Austin Texas disbanded Graham and Beano put together another blues outfit, The Sensational Gutter Brothers. When that came to an end Beano decided it was time for the traditional Kiwi Big OE and headed off to England.

But that was only part one of the story. Graham also visited the UK, seeing Beano and making plans.

They both went to a gig by ex-Doctor Feelgood guitarist Wilco Johnson and an idea was hatched. Back in New Zealand Graham recruited bass player Brian Franks and when Beano returned they put together Brilleaux, playing “Maximum R&B” in the patented English style of Doctor Feelgood. That was in 1999.

They have since gone from strength to strength.

Later this year Brilleaux head to the UK for their first English tour.

And this weekend they relive the old days. Beasley Street are back together, albeit briefly, playing at the Marchwood Blues Picnic in Whakamarama along with guitarist Anton Tipi Elkington, Kokomo, Chris Gunn and others. EXCISION Dir: Richard Bates Jr - Starring: AnnaLynne McCord, Traci Lords, Ariel Winter OK. Sometimes the clear “Pick of the Week” is not a film that is suitable for everyone. Or even the majority of people. This is one. I suspect many will be horrified by it or turn it off after the first five minutes. Fair enough. But it stuck in my mind and is certainly the most strikingly original film I’ve seen this year. It’s just not very pleasant.

The story of troubled schoolgirl Pauline and her psycho-sexual inner life – strange fantasies with a necrophiliac bent, stemming, one assumes, from her teenage alienation – is pretty disturbing from the get-go. But can you really blame the socially inept girl for her weirdness when her mother is

(ex-porn star) Traci Lords, teacher is Malcolm McDowell and priest/councillor (“alternative” film director) John Waters?

But, though you might expect it, this is not so much a Waters’ exercise in low-budget campiness as it is a Cronenberg-style coming-of-age body horror. It manages to be both emotionally moving and continually alarming, with the less said about the devastating ending the better.

The look of it is impressively stylised and the uncompromising nature of the film-making can only be admired. But you need nerves of steel for this one.

Despite the props heaped on him at the Golden Globe Awards by Jodie Foster and Robert Downey Jr, Mel Gibson’s star is still struggling to regain its previous lustre. All those “uncomfortable” stories do make it hard to embrace the man (even though we all know the media lie and distort). But Mel can still rock it on screen, as he proves in Get The Gringo . It’s a return to the tough action style of Payback, set in the eye-opening world of a Mexican prison, almost a town in itself. The prison “boss” is after a liver transplant from a young boy whom Mel ends up protecting. And they’ve got to escape of course. It’s back to what the man does best and he does it very well. Hard-nosed entertaining action.

Bellflower has divided audiences and I must admit to feeling somewhat conflicted. On the one hand it is a tough, remarkable piece of low-budget guerilla film-making.

On the other hand it can be a bit overblown and pretentious.

Not that the story is pretentious.

It’s about two twenty-something reprobates who think the world will end Mad Max-style so build flame throwers while tooling around in an armoured muscle car. The main protagonist falls for a girl when both enter a cricket-eating competition in a redneck bar: this is the grungy down ‘n’ dirty story of the ill-fated relationship. Unique and aggressively made, it possibly has more style than substance, though it’s worth a look as a possible zeitgeist moment for indie films.

Hit and Run is an amiable enough romp, written by, directed by and starring Dax Shepard. It’s a romantic action comedy centred round Dax’s witness-protected bank robber and his girlfriend (Kirsten Bell), road-tripping in a souped-up Lincoln with a comedy US Marshal (Tom Arnold) and eccentric excrim buddies (notably Bradley Cooper) on their trail. There’s a pleasant and surprising vein of character humour and the slightly rambling plot gives an odd “home movie with friends” feel to things, but the central duo are just about likeable enough to carry it off.

No longer all together, but all alone “All together, all alone” is descriptive of human relationships throughout our culture.

Although we are more connected than we have ever been, through the wonders of modern technology, the reality is that most people feel more alone and unknown than at any other time in human history. Today, we relate without relationships.

Life today is about “me”, “my” and “mine” - it is about self-seeking independence and looking out for ourselves. Society is no longer about communities as it once was and we have little contact or genuine relationship with people we interact with in life, outside of the environments (work, school, play) in which that interaction takes place. Sadly and contrary to God’s Word, the influence of that worldly culture is seen in the Church in the Western world. Instead of being “living stones” being built up together

to be the temple of the Lord, a dwelling place for God by His Spirit and a fully functioning body where every member functions in living relationship and in mutual inter-dependence with the rest of the body, much of the Church is “all together, all alone”. Instead of the Church being a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, a called-out community of people walking together in dynamic relationship, much of the Church functions in whatever comes out of a group of individuals being together for something spiritual on a Sunday morning. After that, we go back to “our lives” and there is little or no sense of biblical relationship, there is little or no sense of community or of being called and fashioned together for a divine purpose and we miss the significance of the corporate vessel God that God purposed in establishing the Church. I can’t have a right relationship with Jesus for just two hours on

a Sunday, nor can I have a biblical relationship with the Church which is His Body, just for two hours on a Sunday. The Church can never be living stones built together to be “a spiritual house, a holy priesthood” (1 Peter 2:5) while we live like the world, in self-seeking independence.Visit with us on Sunday.

The Slow Bible movement Part two of three

I’m advocating ‘slow’ bible reading. Rather than a Bible-in-a-year plan, I’m for a slower reading of the biblical narrative.

Reading the Bible can be a daunting task and, to their credit, Bible-ina-year plans attempt to make it less daunting.

Slow reading however, is intended not only to make the Bible less daunting, but to also aid with the comprehension and application of God’s Word in the day to day of life’s journey. What might ‘slow reading’ that leads to ‘Bible living’ look like, then?

Firstly, it is helpful to remember that the Bible was always intended to be read in ‘conversation’.

Most of the books of the Bible are addressed to a community of people who would have engaged with the content in a discussion with each other, both the young and the old, the immature and the wise. Reading it in a ‘community’, with the benefit of the input of others, makes it much easier to make sense of.

But to do this you need to slow down. Trying to read with a friend (or a

group of friends), as well as inviting an expert into the discussion, means 3.2 chapters every day for 365 days will simply be impossible. Don’t even worry about this. Aim instead to tackle a couple of books of the Bible in a year, perhaps between two and dour. Relax with this as a goal, read and converse.

Secondly, you might be wondering where you can find an expert to join your discussion. They’re not that hard to find, the experts write books! N.T. Wright, one of the world’s leading Bible scholars, has a series of books called For Everyone in which he explains in simple terms what’s going on in the

various books of the New Testament. Just Google John for Everyone or Romans for Everyone.

Get a couple of friends working through a For Everyone book and meet up to discuss from time to time. Your comprehension and of course with it, the challenge to apply the Bible to your daily life, will go through the roof. You’ll also be able to encourage, provoke and challenge each other along the way. As well as enjoying each other’s company.

Make a start – it’ll be worth the effort. Next week will finish off with two more thoughts.

Tour brings a different vibe for Opshop

Kiwi band Opshop is headlining the More FM Summer Vineyard Tour in Tauranga next week.

Like a fine wine, the boys from Opshop continue to mature with time and are primed and ready to kick start a stellar line up for this year’s More FM Summer Vineyard Tour.

The Kiwi favourites will headline the countryside convoy in Tauranga on February 15 alongside Australian artist Missy Higgins and iconic Kiwi artists Che-Fu and Aaradhna.

Opshop, one of New Zealand’s most successful bands, will return to Tauranga for their third visit and guitarist Matt Treacy says the band has had a pretty quiet summer while preparing to hit the road.

“We get to go around some great venues and everyone is chilled out. It’s something quite unique when the sun’s still out and it gives it a different vibe.”

The band comprising of Matt, Jason Kerrison, Bobby Kennedy and Clint Harris have put together a dynamic show unlike any other they have played

before with a mix of new and old favourites to get everyone singing along.

“Being part of the tour allows the band to interact with the crowd. We hope we bring some fun and good times. We have added a few extra players on the stage to free up Jason from his keyboard work.

He will be able to get out and be more interactive with the crowd.” Formed in 2002, the band has three critically acclaimed albums under their belt and have firmly lodged themselves into New Zealand’s musical vocabulary with popular singles such as ‘One Day’, ‘No Ordinary Thing’, and ‘Maybe’, and ever-growing list of accolades. The band can also lay claim to being the first New Zealand band to reach the number one spot on iTunes New Zealand in it is history with ‘Maybe’. “We are in that mode of writing stuff at the moment.
