Unless it involves farm critters or small rodents, and even then, the concern is for the welfare of the animals.

The gay folk are really keen to get married, just like real people. Apparently a union doesn’t cut it anymore.

Funny, how hard they campaigned to get that right in 2004 and now it seems that isn’t enough.

Families First campaigner Bob McCroskie made a very interesting point on TV this week, asking when can we expect to see polygamist marriages. After all, he suggests, that if it’s okay for two people of the same sex who like each other enough to get married, why not three?

This got me thinking, that if it’s okay for homosexuals to marry, then it should be fine for me to marry my dog.

After all, she’s pretty loyal and we like each other a lot. Please note bestiality is still illegal and it’s not something I’d want to consummate. Do not try that at home. However, if it came to being forced to choose between an animal and another man, it would be a tough choice. Those sheep around the hillsides of Te Puna are looking nervous again.

Wheel appeal But why stop at gays and animals? I have really loved some cars I’ve owned over the years. Why can I not marry my car? Any other spins on formalised relationships really should fall in the territory of the civil union, which the country went to a large amount of expense and moral thrashings to establish back in 2004.

Tim Shadbolt couldn’t wait to get as far away as possible and ended up mayor of Invercargill.

There’s a huge marketing opportunity here for Tauranga.

“Fancy some time in Auckland? Yeah, we thought not. Just as well there’s Tauranga.”

Short sentences

Finally this week: We like short sentences. But this is ridiculous. The skipper and navigator of the Rena were let off the rest of their sentences and deported home to the Philippines. We’re hoping that on the way to the airport, when the driver heard a voice from the back saying, “I know a good shortcut”, that he just ignored it.

Re-thinking freedom camping Tauranga City Council is being encouraged to rethink its freedom camping by-law by motorhome owners who say it is illegal and driving away thousands of dollars in tourist income.

The bylaw, framed to discourage a few young people in converted people movers, also captures thousands of mostly middle aged, moderately well heeled mobile home owners.

About 40 of them, all members of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association, turned up at the city council chambers this week to present their submissions on the Tauranga Street Use and Public Places Bylaw 2012.

The bylaw restricts freedom campers to five locations; Memorial Park, Greerton Park, Fergusson Park, Marine Park, and Waikareao Foreshore. Only three motor homes can stay in each designated areas per night and they can only stay in any one location two consecutive nights in any month.

It drives freedom campers away, says NZMCA member Derek Oakley in his submission.

The council should regard motor home owners as tourists, and he reminded them that the NZMCA AGM held at Baypark at Easter brought $1.6 million in spending to the city from the 1600 motor home travellers attending the show.

There are about 45,000 motor homes freedom camping in

New Zealand, and 3700 of the members live in the Bay of Plenty.

Campervan tourists spend about $600 million a year, but Derek says out of town motorhome owners would bypass Tauranga.

Other association members told the council motor home owners stop where they are welcomed, and just drive on through towns where they are not welcome.

Kawerau, Taupo, and Hastings welcome motor home owners, but Tauranga doesn’t.

Lindsay Roberts in his submission says the council’s blanket ban is illegal. Freedom camping is legally permitted and can only be banned in specific areas for specific reasons. The bylaw also has to comply with the freedom of movement provisions of the Bill of Rights.

Te Puke man jailed for beating wife A Te Puke man who admitted to beating his wife in a ‘prolonged and violent attack’ which involved banging her head on a concrete floor will spend the next two years behind bars.

Tehutana Xavier Oketopa, 33, was convicted and sentenced to two years and four months jail when he appeared in Tauranga District Court this week.

Oketopa had previously pleaded guilty to charges of injury with intent to injure and assault on a female after he beat his wife and teenage daughter in what Judge Peter Rollo described as a ‘long and extremely violent attack’.

The court heard how on June 15, 2012 Oketopa attacked his wife, who he has seven children with, in the garage of their Te Puke home.

He repeatedly punched her and was banging her head against a concrete floor when two of their teenage children walked in.

Judge Rollo says when the teenagers tried to stop Oketopa he turned on them and punched his 16-year-old daughter in the face.

During an interview with police Oketopa said he had used ‘ten out of ten’ force during the attack.

Judge Rollo says due to Oketopa’s two previous convictions of male assaults female and the brutal behaviour displayed in June, a prison sentence was inevitable.

Williams’ lawyer Bill Nabney says she came to court prepared to go to jail and has made arrangements for her children to be looked after by family members in Mangakino.

Judge Louis Bidios sentenced Williams to eight months in jail and disqualified her from driving for 15 months.

He also made an order for her to take part in a Tikanga Maori programme, budgeting course and parenting programme if assessed suitable.

He pointed a hand gun at the dairy owner, demanding money before fleeing from the shop down Grange Road towards Brookfield.

The teen also pleaded guilty to taking a Logitech remote control, valued at $199, from Dick Smith in Mount Maunganui on January 30.

Cooper, who has been in custody since being arrested by police, was due to be sentenced this week but Judge Louis Bidois adjourned the matter until September 26.

The charge laid indictably, carries a maximum 14 year jail sentence.

Suicide statistics alarming

A high number of teenage suicide rates in the Bay of Plenty concerns authorities and figures are in line with a national trend according to freshly released statistics.

Earlier this year an inquest into the suicides of five Eastern Bay of Plenty teens during a five month period led Bay of Plenty coroner Wallace Bain to talk about the issues of gangs, teenage pregnancies and youth offending.

A total of 13 teens committed suicide in Kawerau during an 18 month period – five of which were considered as part of the inquest in the Whakatane District Court.

Those five young people all took their own lives between October 2010 and February 2011.

The inquest is a continuation of one which began in July last year, which was adjourned to allow the coroner to gather evidence linking the deaths to such issues as gangs and teenage pregnancies.

From 2008 to 2011, the number of suicides has increased by almost 50 per cent in the Bay of Plenty, with 35 sui-

cides recorded by the Rotorua coroner in 2008 and 60 self-inflicted deaths recorded in the year ending June 2011.

The episode has increased calls for more information about suicide to be released to the public.

According to statistics released on Monday, the number of teenage suicides (15 to 19-year-olds) increased while the total amount of suicides is actually down from last year.

Judge Neil MacLean released the annual suicide statistics for the third time and says while the annual number has remained relatively constant, the figures show some concerning trends.

In the 15 to 19-year-old age group the number of suicides increased from 56 in 2010-2011 to 80 in 2011-2012.

The report also shows a suicide in the five to nine-year-old age group, the youngest suicide case since comprehensive records began in 2007.

The high level of suicide numbers has seen a renewed call for suicides to be talked about more and not brushed under the carpet, in an effort to bring down the number of incidents.

Young Katikati scribe write on line A Year 13 Katikati College student has won the senior section of national secondary schools writing competition ‘Write Off Line’.

Toby Hendy won the section with her poem ‘Species’, which was described by judge Anaru Bickford as a “thought-provoking piece of writing” which “both attempts and succeeds in conveying the sense of confusion, frustration and loss that as humans we have all experienced”.

The poem explores several instances of misunderstandings in the animal kingdom.

“Being a scientifically-minded person, I was first very intrigued by an article I had read online about a whale nicknamed ‘The world’s loneliest whale’ because its call was on a frequency too high to be heard by any other whales,” says Toby.

“It drifted alone in the ocean continuing to call even though it could not be heard. The whale’s story became one of the stanzas in my poem, which I wrote to explore the universality of misunderstandings in animals and in humans.”

For her efforts, Toby wins a writing course courtesy of Pear Jam Books, including personal feedback from Jane Blonde spylet series creator, Jill Marshall.

“It is really inspiring to have won a prize for my writing as the mentoring on offer by author Jill Marshall is an invaluable way to step up my writing and move closer to my dream of having my work published. It is an opportunity that I am truly grateful and excited for.”

The competition received close to 100 entries in its first year, the majority of which came from Bay of Plenty students. Organiser and Tauranga Writers president Piper Mejia is thrilled with the response, although she admits the variety of entries made it difficult to judge.

Asked to write 1000 words or less on the theme ‘You Don’t Understand’, students sent in poems, stories, creative non-fiction, slice of life accounts and even a speech.

Portia Baine of Hamilton’s Sacred Heart College was chosen as the winner of the junior section and will receive a collection of books by New Zealand authors from Tauranga Writers.

The winning poems will appear in an anthology including the best writing from the competition, featuring cover art by local designer Samara Kirkham.

The book, entitled ‘Write Off Line 2012’ will be launched in Tauranga on October 26.

Dawson’s creek: The paddling family Kayaking is all in the family for the Dawsons, but don’t expect any extreme paddling from parents Les and Kay. The couple are involved from the sideline – with Les the manager for top international paddler and son Mike, while Kay is a seasoned umpire on the circuit.

They have just returned from the Olympic Games where son Mike competed in the K1 slalom event. But this was no cosy family holiday.

Kay was one of three judges monitoring her slalom gate to ensure any paddlers – including Mike – are penalised for a touch. The fact a mother was judging

attracted strong media interest but Kay says it is no different to judging other paddlers.

Kay started umpiring 10 years ago when eldest son James was competing. She has since umpired at numerous events, including world championship races where James and then Mike were racing.

For the past three years Les has spent four months every year with Mike on the European circuit, helping him however he can – including videoing races so Mike can review them to coach himself.

“The roles are reversed from father-son.

The boot’s on the other foot. He’s the boss.”

Les describes his experience helping Mike for the Olympics as an extremely fantastic time.

“But I’ve always been clear I only want to be involved if I’m adding value – so it will be up to him.”

Les is trying to find a suitable coach for Mike and says the main difference between the top paddlers and those just below them is a good coach.

“Mike was really set on winning gold, so he was pretty gutted. He was doing really well in the first two races and was in the top eight but was unable to progress through the semis.”

Following London, Mike has raced at the world cup in Prague, where he finished 19th – after being on track for 11th place before a penalty. It was the first of a full-calendar of races that will keep him busy until he returns home in

Family’s field of dreams completes a full circle From playing for New Zealand to umpiring international tests and now coaching the umpires, Sarah Garnett’s hockey career has almost gone full circle.

Sarah recently returned home from the London Olympic Games where she was one of three umpire managers monitoring the standard of umpiring in the women’s hockey competition. It was her third Olympics in a row as a hockey official.

Hockey is a love she shares with husband and fellow real estate agent Jeff Garnett. He arrived in England days before Sarah flew home, where the national master’s team he managed won bronze at their World Cup. As an umpire manager at the Olympics Sarah monitored the performance of the field umpires, logging their decisions before passing on feedback after the games.

Jeff and Sarah Garnett. hockey has been a major focus, with her playing career culminating in a place on the New Zealand women’s indoor team.

She retired from playing at 28, before turning to umpiring and soon controlled regional games.

Highlights since have included umpiring a World Cup final in Spain and a semi-final

at the Beijing Olympics. Sarah, named New Zealand women umpire of the year in 2006, stood down as an umpire after reaching her 100th international cap, but was shouldertapped to take up a role as umpire manager.

A motivation now is to get more women into senior umpiring. Sarah regularly attends international meetings and training clinics, including flying out for a meeting in Ghana yesterday ahead of training in China next month.

While Sarah no longer plays herself Jeff, who was a goalie for the New Zealand indoor and field teams along with national women indoor team coach, still plays in a social team.

Son Blake followed the family tradition into hockey – playing before following mum into umpiring.

He has put umpiring on hold temporarily for his university studies.

Old Boy of the Year Bryan Gould will also talk at the dinner. Bryan, the college’s first Rhodes scholar, returned to New Zealand in 1994 after a high

profile career as a British Labour Party MP, before taking up the role of Waikato University vice chancellor and being awarded the Companionship of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Education (2003).

The dinner will follow a series of games by the college’s first sports teams against Old Boys teams from 3pm.

Stop those garden escapees Many of the weedy species that are invading and damaging our natural areas are ornamental plants that have ‘jumped the fence’ from gardens and gone wild.

It costs councils, government departments and private landowners millions of dollars, and volunteers and community groups thousands of unpaid hours, to control these weeds every year.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council has produced a ‘Plant Me Instead’ booklet which profiles the environmental weeds of greatest concern to those who work and volunteer in local parks and reserves, national parks, bush remnants, wetlands

and coastal areas in our region.

Suggestions are given for locally-sold non-weedy species, both native and nonnative, that can be used to replace these weeds in your garden. The guide categorises plants under their growth habit - groundcovers and fillers; grasses, bulbs and ferns; climbers and vines; shrubs, trees and palms; and aquatic weeds.

You may be surprised at some of the species that are identified as garden escapees that are causing problems in the wild. Mexican daisy, agapanthus, hydrangea, canna lilly, bamboo, arum lilly, English ivy, Japanese honeysuckle,

jasmine, lantana, and the phoenix palm are some of the very common plants which used to be favourites in our gardens which are now on the list of plants to be avoided – particularly if you live adjacent to bush and wilderness areas. The good news is that the booklet identifies attractive alternatives together with full colour illustrations, so you know what you are looking for in garden centres.

Lessons from Waihi Beach The environment has only one pollutant. It is called people.

Take away people and we can have a pristine, uncontaminated masterpiece of nature that should only be enjoyed from a respectful distance. Think of the thousands who have looked down on Matakana Island beaches and offered a silent prayer that no-one will be allowed to ‘develop’ that magnificent stretch of coastline.

Mount Maunganui’s beach must have been like Matakana but it degenerated into a scruffy holiday resort and a bach town and has been replaced by a compromise environment capable of coping with a port facility and the large population around Tauranga.

At the other end of the harbour, Waihi Beach is still victim to the early clumsy unplanned settlement and abuse of the environment. The Waihi Beach Community Board meeting topics last week included examples of the consequences of piecemeal planning on the environment.

Warning signs against swimming at the mouths of the Two and Three Mile Creeks are unacceptable for any holiday resort. The district council representative reported that the problem was caused by nutrient-rich water from the farmland catchment behind the town contaminating the sewerage plant. This problem then is with the regional council and the problem continues.

Will asset sales benefit us?

New Zealand First is opposed to the sale of state assets.

The delay in the sale of Mighty River Power until next year does give time to place National under intense scrutiny. Simply put, the economic mechanics they spout do not stack up.

As it stands, State Owned Enterprises Minister Tony Ryall sets targets for the SOEs which inflict fiscal austerity while demanding big dividends.

Chief executives of these companies find ways to make them appear in better shape than they are – and potentially attract a higher sale price – by cutting wages and jobs. They even use the tired old line that goes something like ‘through these cuts we are increasing productivity’.

Last week we saw the bleak reality this sort of approach creates with 320 miners set to lose their jobs, and another 180 KiwiRail workers soon to follow.

Many of those sacked will struggle to find new jobs and will end up on the dole moving from tax payer to tax burden. Others will join the exodus to Australia where more than 50,000 New Zealanders head to every year.

Flying high with aviation award Growing up in the Waikato he had been fascinated by the pilots in the Great War, so was quick to sign up when he had his chance. Guy, now 96, was a gifted pilot and had his flying talent recognised early in his career when he was asked to stay on after his three months training at Tairei Air Base to be an instructor.

Guy trained new recruits at the Tairei base for two years, before heading into conflict in 1943 for the first of three tours of duty with 18 Squadron RNZAF in the Solomon Islands.

With Guy now deaf, the Weekend Sun spoke to his wife Elaine Robertson this week to learn more of his story behind the Jean Batten Memorial Trophy he has been awarded from the British-based Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators.

“He’s quite overwhelmed by having been awarded this now. The Japanese ack-ack defences then opened up, putting on a great display of fire, surrounding them in large black puffs of smoke, with explosions regularly rocking the planes. Then after the Mitchells dropped their bombs and turned away for home with the Zeroes in pursuit.

Along with his opposite number Sgt Roy Reardon he continued to weave rapidly, guarding each other’s tails, until they were attacked by a big group of Zeros.

No goal is too high for Katikati mountain runner Sally Gibbs.

On Sunday she finished 33rd in a field of 88 women runners at the world mountain running championships in Italy.

Achieved your goals?

Then climb another mountain. This is the philosophy that keeps pushing Katikati runner Sally Gibbs, but in her case it is run up another mountain.

Last Sunday Sally competed in the six-strong New Zealand team in the World Mountain Running Championships in Italy, where she finished 33rd in a top field.

Sally, 49, only began running competitively three years ago – and has gone a long distance in the short time since. Ironically

she recalls how she ‘threw sickies’ to get out of school cross country races.

Since getting serious about running Sally has gone on to set a series of national masters records over 800m to marathon distances, as well as winning three gold medals at last year’s World Masters Athletics Championships in California in the women’s 45-49 age group.

Talking to the Weekend Sun before she left for Italy, she said she felt “pretty unbelievable” with her success in California, which included a six minute personal best in the marathon.

It has been all uphill for Sally

since her first mountain race in April, when her performance at the national championships earned her one of three women’s places in the team competing at the world champs in Italy. To prepare for the 8km race which ascends 688m above its course, she trained every day for up to two and a half hours.

“One challenge has been finding sustained up-hills in the area to simulate the uphill off-road course.”

The 4WD tracks at Mt Te Aroha and Mauao have been some of her training grounds, while Katifit has given her free use of a treadmill to help her uphill practice.

The winds of charity blokarting do blow A charity blokarting component has been announced for the Home and Leisure Expo, which organisers hope will grow into an international event in the coming years.

Home and Leisure Expo organiser and Bay Events director Graeme Martin says the Baypark Blokart Charity Open will be held on the State Highway side of the main parking area flanking TECT Arena – for a variety of good causes.

“Everyone races on behalf of a charity so the money goes to the charity at the end of the day.”

Graeme says the idea is fitting,

seeing as though the crafts are manufactured in the Bay and the craze began here.

The show is one of two main sponsors of the racing, and organisers have stumped up with almost $3000 worth of prizes.

The new race has been listed with the New Zealand Blokart Association, and Graeme hopes it will grow into a two day event at next year’s show.

Bay Blokart club president Peter Sheath says blokarts will be present at the Home and Leisure Show for each of the three days, with the charity race to take place on Saturday, September 22.

The event has already been registered with the national body for next year - for the weekend before Labour Weeknd.

It is hoped by then that it would have attracted sufficient sponsors to be run over two days.

Peter says about 40 competitors are likely to take part, split between under and over 85kg weight classifications, from as far afield as Manawatu and Auckland.

Intruder indecently assaults girl Tauranga Police have confirmed a seven-year-old girl was indecently assaulted in her Oceanview Road home in Mount Maunganui on Tuesday night.

Police say a man entered the girl’s bedroom where she was sleeping with her younger sister and indecently assaulted her overnight on September 4-5.

Psa spreads to Coromandel The kiwifruit disease Psa-V has been found for the first time in the Coromandel region and four vines of the new gold variety G9 have been removed.

Kiwifruit Vine Health chief executive Barry O’Neil says the vines, planted in 2010, were on a 9hectare orchard in Whenuakite and KVH has established a ‘controlled area’ within a 10 kilometre radius of the infected orchard.

“As this is the first reported incidence of Psa in the region, the owner and manager decided the best action to take was to remove the affected and adjoining vines back to the graft,” says Barry.

“That is despite the fact G9, like the other new variety, G3 is believed to be more tolerant of the disease than the original gold fruit Hort16A. “It is unclear how long the vine had been infected but the owner and manager are astute orchardists and have done everything they needed to do in the use of crop management and protective sprays against Psa.”

Former DJ fined for molesting teen A Tauranga man who admitted to molesting a teenage boy in the 1970s and 1980s will spend the next seven months on home detention.

Former radio DJ Graeme Parsonage, 64, appeared in the Tauranga District Court on Tuesday after earlier pleading guilty to indecent assault and sexual conduct with a young person under the age of 16.

The charges relate to a period of offending stretching from January 1970 to March 1982.

The court was told the molesting began when a 12-year-old boy accepted an invitation by Parsonage for a behind the scenes tour of a show at Radio Taranaki.

The offending continued each time the victim visited the station, with the victim also being molested while walking and driving with the offender.

Budget help requests double Tough financial times are hitting Western Bay families hard with annual new cases dealt with by the Tauranga Budget Advisory doubling in the past four years.

The service, which has just celebrated its 40th birthday, helped 1741 new cases in the 2012 financial year – well up on 1165 cases last year and more than double the 831 helped in 2009. Earliest figures available for the service show it had 78 new cases in 1989.

Service coordinator Diane Bruin say the service is helping a lot more wage and salary earners who are struggling to make ends meet.

“A lot of this is due to the unexpected, such as illness where they haven’t got any medical insurance or provision should they get sick. We often see unexpected expenses like this tipping people over.”

Diane says it is the same with unexpected job losses

and redundancies, often meaning people cannot meet their commitments.

“Putting away even $5 a week as emergency money is welcome when the car breaks down.”

She says the service is also seeing more people in insolvencies due to this lack of preparation for the unexpected, along with the poor economy and easy access to credit.

“For the people that seek assistance early we can help them plan for the future and manage outstanding debt before it becomes too difficult. But if it is not dealt with the only option may be insolvency or mortgagee sale.”

Statistics show total arrears owed by clients has grown steadily from $212,660 in 1989, to $5,717,667 in 2012 – with a $1,341,500 jump during the past year.

Speaking up, Toastmasters compete Top speakers from around Tauranga will go head-tohead on Tuesday with humorous and impromptu ‘table topic’ speech competitions.

The competition will see winners from Toastmaster clubs in division D3 compete for a chance to speak at the regional finals.

Excel Toastmaster Club president Steffi Mueller encourages anyone interested to attend and learn from competitors, saying the night promises a range of lively and entertaining stories.

Another award for Maketu photographer Andy Belcher of Andy’s Lens fame is on a roll.

The Maketu photographer, who recently won second place in the 2012 Creative Asia Travel Photographer of the Year Awards, won the People’s Choice Award at the Te Puke 2012 Business Excellence Awards on August 31.

Andy is thrilled to have won the most hotly contested award, especially since his was the only Maketu business to be nominated.

“Speech contests are an important part of the Toastmasters educational programme, providing an opportunity for Toastmasters to gain speaking experience, as well as an opportunity for others to learn by observing proficient speakers.”

“When they come looking for help they are usually ashamed, embarrassed and very afraid but once they have got on top of it they’ve had a huge boost to their confidence and self-belief. I’ve had people go on to run businesses and be very financially successful.”

She says the first step in taking control of finances is to think about how you use your money.

Peggy is always encouraging people to shop around more to make the most of their money – be it for supermarket groceries, electricity or anything else.

“It’s about making people mindful of every dollar they keep in their pocket after their living expenses is an extra

dollar they put towards their goals.

Once they’ve had a listen to me they are a lot more conscious of looking for ways to save.

“There is definitely always something that you can do to solve your problems. There is always an answer but it may not be the answer you want.”

While finding the answer to financial difficulties can be difficult to swallow, she says getting into money problems does not mean you have failed and regularly sees people transformed through the process of dealing with a budget crisis. Peggy also takes free money management courses through Te Wananga o Aotearoa.

Competing for rooms: AIMS visitor boost The no vacancy sign will be going up at motels around Tauranga this week with about 6000 visitors in town for the AIMS Games.

Motel Association Tauranga branch president Gail Fagan says moteliers are delighted to have the busy week ahead after what had been a tough year.

“It’s definitely been a downturn over the whole year with the Rena and the poor summer, so we are hoping this is the start of a great summer.”

AIMS Games tournament director Vicki Semple says a quick analysis has shown the event brings in more than $6 million to the region, but says a full economic impact study had not been undertaken on the event.

Vicki says with 89 per cent of the 7200 involved in the

games coming from outside the Western Bay area their spending on accommodation, meals and other expenses offered a “significant” economic boost to the area.

Tauranga Chamber of Commerce CEO Max Mason says all events, including the AIMS Games, are important to Tauranga and underline the need for another hotel and expanded convention facilities in the city, despite the recent cancellation of plans for a new hotel in Durham St. “Events are a very important part of our economy – and the more of them we build the more it makes the case that we need the infrastructure and facilities to support these types of events and you can say exactly the same thing for conferences.”

Visiting Treasury CEO proponent of free markets The Western Bay’s economy came under the spotlight this week with a visit by Treasury head Gabriel Makhlouf, but he won’t be offering any magic fairy dust for struggling businesses.

The CEO for the Treasury, which advises the Government on economic policy, is a firm believer in the free-market and says data for the Western Bay shows the region’s economy

is faring better than most.

Gabriel’s visit – his first to Tauranga – was to get an insight into the region’s strengths and challenges to “inform” data Treasury drew on to advise government policy.

He says key themes in discussions with business leaders included concerns about the Resource Management Act, about finding skilled staff and the lack of support for startup small businesses.

Gabriel suggested business leaders get proactive about solving the skills and support

challenges themselves - giving the example of how Rotorua iwi groups set up training programmes to address skills challenges.

“The community needs to really think about what it does itself if it has a skills challenge.”

Gabriel could not comment on the efforts

by Priority One and Bay of Plenty Regional Council to foster economic development, but says the success of all strategies require they are business-driven. “The concern with that sort of thing is that it becomes a self-perpetuating bureaucracy.”

New growth bursts out Spring has arrived with a bit of mixed weather; the garden is loving it, busting out into new growth and blossom.

It is actually not that cold and the ground is quite warm for the time of year, but be cautious not to get cracking in the garden too soon as we could still have a cold snap yet and that would undo all your hard work. If you have a greenhouse, tomato plants are now available for planting but don’t be tempted to plant then outdoors yet as it is far too early and they will get a chill.

This week I have been doing some tidying up around the house, cutting back some

shrubs, weeding and doing a general spruce up ready for planting out new plants as they become available during the spring, cleaning up rubbish and leaves and tidying up all those herbaceous plants.

September is the time to put a first spray on the lawns to kill the prickle weed that has recently germinated. The idea is to kill the plants before they flower and produce the seed, as it is the seed that has the prickle on. For a good control spray soon and then again late October, that should keep the lawn free of the prickles.

Another job, for those with apple and pear trees, is to hang out a Codling Moth trap.

These are used to trap and monitor the

population of adult moths. The trap uses a synthetic replica of the scent produced by the female to lure male moths into the sticky trap from which they cannot escape or breed. Trapping the male Codling Moth will reduce breeding; fewer eggs mean fewer maggots to attach to your fruit. If you catch more than 15-20 moths in a two week period, this shows a heavy infestation of the moth and additional controls may be required, such as a chemical spray with Carbaryl.

It is also time to think about purchasing your seed potatoes as most varieties are now available. Early varieties take aprox 60-80 days from planting to digging, so if you want to grow some new potatoes for your Christmas Dinner they need to be planted by early October. You need to get them well chitted (sprouted) before planting, as this can take up to four weeks, now is the time.

Donation boosts Athenree environment Waihi Beach Environment Society spokesman Brian Hepenstall says they have a regular group of volunteers for projects like this, but they will definitely need some outside help due to the number of plants.

“Department of Conservation is right behind the event and will be providing refreshments, so it’s an open invitation to put on some gumboots, bring a spade, and celebrate Conservation

Week with some hands-on work.”

The planting day will run from 12-3pm on Sunday, marking the end of Conservation Week – a national programme of events promoted by the Department of Conservation.

The reserve is located on Steele Rd, the entrance is next to the Waiau River Bridge. Volunteers should bring gumboots and a spade but spades will be available.

Athenree Wildlife Reserve’s environmental restoration will get a major boost this spring with the donation of 3500 native plants.

About 100 volunteers are being sought to take part in a public planting day on Sunday, September 16 to plant the plants, donated by Newmont Waihi Gold.

DOC’s biodiversity ranger in Tauranga Dan Rapson

says they are seeing some great success in restoring the retired farmland into natural habitat along the Waiau River at Athenree.

“The result of the work will be an increase in the amount of food and shelter available for birds, lizards and insects, and it’ll help to crowd out weeds like gorse and blackberry.

“Volunteers have already been trapping animal pests in the reserve, so it’s becoming a great place for rare native birds such as bittern and fernbird.”

Gardens galore in 2012 Garden & Artfest Julie Ivermee’s city garden will feature in this year’s Garden & Artfest.

The programme for the 2012 Garden & Artfest in the Bay of Plenty has been launched, revealing a comprehensive event line-up with its core attraction the Garden Trail.

This year the festival gardens are an interesting mix of old favourites and newcomers, with nearly half the 60 plus gardens in the festival first-time festival par-

ticipants. They range from small city gardens to rambling country and coastal grounds, from formal structured gardens to eclectic quirky ones.

In recognition of increasing urbanisation there are more city gardens in the festival than previously, gardens which demonstrate the variety which can be created in a small space.

While most are open for four days during the festival, a selection city gardens will open only for the busiest days, Friday and Saturday.

City gardening will also be the focus of the Urban Rooftop Garden in Tauranga city with several exhibitors showing how the ‘urban jungle’ can be greened, how a tiny courtyard or decks can become a city oasis.

The Garden & Artfest starts November 1, the garden trail runs November 5-11.

Conserve the environment too Our economic system assumes that the environment can and will maintain itself, with a bit of help from the RMA. Evidence that the assumption is wrong includes polluted rivers, frequent flooding, silt-laden estuaries, failed fisheries, lost species, and more.

Our governance separates conservation from environment, and assigns land management to Conservation. But DOC is not resourced to manage the landscapes that it has responsibility for.

Last year, the govern-

ment spent almost as much on motorway consultants as on the entire DoC annual budget.

We have failed to understand that conservation is not just about kakapo. It is also about an environment that delivers fresh water, pollination for horticulture, forests for all to enjoy, kai moana in the estuaries, and management of environmental hazards.

The obsession with building infrastructure has caused us to lose sight of Aotearoa. To be genuinely clean and green, we must give teeth to the RMA, reboot our environmental management, and resource DOC properly.

Grounded play A Tauranga-based Waikato University researcher hopes her report on how children use playgrounds will be considered when Tauranga City Council investigates design options for the new waterfront playground.

Dr Rebecca Sargisson studied how children used 56 counciloperated playgrounds throughout the North Island during summer, and concluded that the best include water, sand, spinning, swings, natural elements and features which promote cooperative behaviour.

She concludes that few North Island playgrounds offer all these options.

It was found that most playgrounds provide swings (most popular), slides (popular) and climbing (less popular), while very few deliberately incorporate natural features or water in their design.

Playgrounds that include a large variety of natural features, which are not visually separated from the play space, encourage the most engagement with nature by children, says Rebecca.

“Studies have shown that children are more likely to engage with the natural features when they are an integral part of the playground, and not separated. New

0.1 per cent per child per hour, with a failure to provide shade leading to the under-use of slides, which were frequently hot to the touch.

It was found that older children still use playgrounds, although older girls seem poorly served by the emphasis on skate parks and sporting activities.

Almost all our playgrounds are situated inside a bark or rubber surround with trees clearly outside this area, which implicitly discourages children to incorporate them into their play - although some still do. The report considers how risk can be managed. It theorises that if risk is removed, then challenges are too, with children resorting to using playground equipment in unintended ways.

Creating x-factor flavours There are favourite flavours that go together, like bacon and eggs, chicken and corn, mushrooms and blue cheese.

This week we are going to cover blue cheese, often referred to by children as ‘stinky cheese’. The distinctive smell of blue cheese comes from the penicillium added to the curds or veined through the cheese before maturation.

For many the smell is off putting – after all it smells

the same as stinky footwear – and so they never try it.

It was the same for me for many years, until I tried a pizza with shaved ham, gorgonzola and mushrooms: a marriage of flavours that rocked my world.

Since that time I have incorporated mushrooms, blue cheese and ham in several different creations and yet none have captured the original taste from that pizza. The reason maybe is that I didn’t have as much passion, or love of creation, as the person who created the x-factor when that pizza was made.

Yes, there is such a thing. Have you ever had a bad coffee when the barista is having a bad day? Food ingredients put together following a recipe can taste better when there is the x-factor involved. Many of the homemade relishes, spreads, jams and sauces available at the Tauranga Farmers’ Market are put together with passion and love and it shines through in the product.

This week’s recipe uses Lavish Foods’ Blue Cheese Addiction as a flavour base for crispy pancakes with

ham, mushroom and blue cheese.

Crispy Pancake of Blue Cheese, Mushroom, Ham Ingredients Pancake mix Makes six pancakes 3 eggs 1cup milk 100g plain flour Filling 1 tub Lavish Foods’ Blue Cheese Addiction 200g sliced mushrooms 100ml cream 150g shaved ham Knob of butter Breadcrumbs Extra milk 1 egg, beaten Method Make the pancakes by whisking eggs and milk together then pouring into the flour which you have formed a well in the centre of. Add extra milk if required to make a thin batter. Cook the pancakes and allow to cool. While they are cooling, sauté the mushrooms in a knob of butter. Cook well then add cream

and reduce. When mushrooms are ready, add the blue cheese addiction. Lay some shaved ham on each pancake, then spoon a pile of mushroom and blue cheese mix. Roll up into a parcel and rest in the fridge until set, for about an hour.

Remove pancake parcels from the fridge. Dust with flour then egg wash with beaten egg and a little milk. Dip into breadcrumbs to coat and return to fridge to set.

To serve, cook pancake on both sides then place in a moderate oven for 15-20 minutes. Serve with salad greens to make a filling main course dish.

Fencing is one of the many fun activities anyone can try their hand at in this month’s Sports BOP Play in the Bay programme.

This month the programme’s theme is ‘Activate’ – offering a wide range of activities to encourage people to get up and active with fun sports or exercise.

En Garde Fencing Club, which ran its first classes in July, is running classes for anyone aged over eight who is interested in trying their hand at the ancient sport.

Instructor Anthony Mair says there has been a particularly good response from students aged 11-16, and had just launched a weekly adult programme.

Anthony says the sport is like “chess at speed” because you need to plan your

tactics ahead and says it is also good for helping develop fine motor skills.

The introduction to sword fencing, using foils in the classic French style, will be held at Papamoa College Gym on Saturday, August 8 in two separate sessions (3-4pm or 4-5pm). Details Anthony Mair 027 2858133.

Another activity kicking off this month is aimed at those wanting to run non-stop to the top of Mauao.

The 10-week programme being run organised by Mount Joggers and Walkers, which is suited for people of all fitness levels, starts this Tuesday. Runners meet at the May St Scout Hall on Tuesdays and Fridays for sessions from 9.15-10.30am to build up their fitness.

Olympics medallists to inspire future champs Olympics medallists Mahe Drysdale and Sarah Walker are geared to open the ninth annual NZCT AIMS GAMES International Sporting Championships this weekend.

The opening ceremony takes place on Sunday, September 9 in front of more than 6000 excited and motivated Year Seven and Eight athletes from across New Zealand at TECT Arena in Mount Maunganui.

Tournament directory Vicki Semple says having both Mahe and Sarah attend is going to be such a thrill for all the athletes.

“It will really set the theme for the games and I’m absolutely delighted Mahe and Sarah have taken time out of their very busy schedules to come along.”

As Mahe and Sarah both attended local Bay of Plenty intermediate schools they have a strong commitment to the region and continue to support athletes and events in the area, she says.

Sarah attended Kawerau Putauaki School and principal Noel More is delighted she will be at the Opening Ceremony.

“Sarah is a great role model for our students to look up to. She’s always been a neat kid and with her great achievements, definitely something for the students to aspire towards.”

There will also be displays of entertainment throughout the ceremony showcasing talented artists from around the regions, beginning at 6pm with a powerful performance from the Otumoetai Intermediate Kapa Haka group.

The Fairplay promise will be read out for all participants to reflect on before they enter the competition phase of the games – starting with ‘good sport is about positive attitude’ and ending with ‘ give it heaps’.

The NZCT AIMS GAMES runs from September 9-14 and includes 165 schools (two from Australia), more than 6000 athletes and 1200 coaches, managers and supporters participating in 16 sporting codes.

Swim school with a difference Liz Cummings (nee van Welie) and her husband Greg Cummings wanted to provide a swim school in Tauranga with significant points of difference.

When they opened Liz van Welie Swim School in 2011, the research and investment they put in resulted in a quality learn to swim programme providing the highest quality water for all ages.

Now, children as young as three months old are enjoying being exposed to water for the very first time.

“The major focus in early childhood learn-to-swim is educating the parents,” says Liz. “We teach them the dif-

More patchy and harder Since last week and during last weekend recreational fishing in the Western Bay of Plenty has grown more patchy and harder.

Arch McTainsh (Enterprise) last Friday and Saturday found the tarakihi fishing in the Middle Ground slow and the at times three-metre swell added to the difficulties.

However in the end most of the anglers did land 10 tarakihi each. Some also landed one or two snapper, kahawai, trevally, and John Dory. Although overall the anglers had a respectable tally they did have to work at it.

Garth Le Lievre (Deepstar) had a very good day early last week in the

Middle Ground. By 9am most had their tarakihi limit and catches were almost 100 per cent tarakihi. Last weekend however it had really toughened up apparently almost everywhere. Saturday at Mayor it was hard going to get three bluenose. Around Motiti it was also harder, although there did appear to be still plenty of tarakihi at a few spots.

Brett Keller (Manutere) last Friday and Saturday in the Middle Ground had to make several moves to cope with the swell, strong wind and current, but overall they caught a satisfactory amount of tarakihi.

Saturday the conditions eased and they ventured Outside but found the fishing even harder until

Our Papamoa veteran kontiki fisher says that Western Bay of Plenty Beach Fishing had recently become a lot harder. The best he had heard of recently was a 1200metres out kontiki which brought in three gurnard and twp snapper.

One or two kontikis were bringing in one or two kahawai.

A surfcaster spokesman said that Papamoa Beach surfcasters had landed a few kahawai last weekend.

Celebrating adult learning in the Bay Adult learning was celebrated on Thursday with 13 awards and commendations given out to Tauranga people who are changing their lives.

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic adult and community network organiser Judi Honeyfield says the awards recognise the hard work and effort put in by adult learners.

“We are so pleased to see so many people continuing to engage in education during their adult lives. It can be extremely hard work but they get out there and learn new skills, and many go on to share their skills and teach others.”

Polytechnic automotive group leader Sean Squires was ‘ecstatic’ about the commendation as an innovative provider.

“We recognise the need for our students to continue their studies

after leaving our full-time programmes and have developed an innovative managed apprenticeship system,” said Sean.

The awards, given out by Tauranga mayor Stuart Crosby as part of Adult Learners’ Week, included categories for outstanding learners and education providers.

The top award for Innovative Provider went to home-based care provider Enliven. Winners in the Outstanding Adult Learners category included awards for Derek Te Aotonga, Napawan Williams, Penny Deane and Ridley Cox as well as commendations for Kessie Kohu, Andrew Cooper and Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s Environmental Management Class Year Two. The constantly evolving TECT Park is set to transform again next weekend thanks to a Lions tree grove visually impaired planting morning.

Organiser Pam Hawkins says a designated area will come alive to smell and touch due to the large number of ‘touchy-feely’ and scented plants and shrubs ready for planting.

Rob Aislabie is the coordinator for Rotorua and will bring three or four visually-impaired people with him, bringing the number to between 10-20.

The planting will take a couple of hours and will be followed by lunch at the Arrivals Centre.

Those planning on attending are advised to bring suitable clothing and footwear and are reminded that cell phone coverage in the area is poor.

Those attending will meet at the TECT Park Arrivals Centre on September 15 at 10.30am.

Parents key to tackling abuse Parents are not given full education on drug and alcohol abuse because we live in such a politically correct world, says Amped4life managing director Pat Buckley, who will speak in Papamoa on September 19.

Pat, who founded Amped4life in 2002, wants to include parents in teens’ education about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse and the importance of making good choices.

Papamoa Colleges’ parents and friends group has joined forces with Pat in his programme that will educate both teens and parents about

the decisions young people are facing today.

So far, the programme has targeted only college aged students but has been adapted to be made available for parents as well.

Pat says the bottom line is that people shape their future by their choices, both positive and negative.

“We need to encourage our young people to take ownership of their own lives.”

He says teenagers need to be wise about their decisions and it is important they are warned about the potential dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

“We need to help them (parents) understand all tell-tale signs of drug

and alcohol abuse.”

Pat speaks from a lifetime of experience. As of March 2012, he has witnessed 53 friends die prematurely through drug, alcohol and substance abuse.

Two of the 53 friends Pat has lost include his girlfriend and best friend, who were killed on the same day in a motorcycle crash.

The pair died after they had been drinking at a pub for several hours then got on a motorbike. Pat’s best friend veered across the road’s centre line and was killed instantly.

Pat’s girlfriend died in her sister’s arms.

Pat says the first mistake they made was that they drove while intoxi-

cated. The second was removing their helmets.

This year Pat has spoken to more than 15,000 people, bringing credible and powerful examples from his experience and providing information on the implications of bad decisions to those making them and those affected by them.

The two-hour programme is open to everyone from 7-9pm in the college’s theatre, 151 Doncaster Drive, Papamoa.

Man guilty of indecent assault A Tauranga man has been found guilty by jury on a charge of indecent assault after he kissed a woman on the neck during what she thought was a job interview.

This letter is addressed to the communities of the Bay of Plenty to advise, following our visit in July, that the owners and insurers of the Rena are committed to dealing with the grounding in a responsible way.

Consultation has begun on the effects of future options for the wreck with representatives of tangata whenua and with social, environmental, economic and commercial input from the community. If your group has not been contacted or you have any particular aspect you want to tell us about, or you wish to receive future newsletters – please contact us at the free phone number or address below.

We currently have a US salvage company (Resolve) working to reduce the bow section of the wreck to one metre below the low tide level. Braemar Howells Unimar are also continuing to recover cargo and debris around the wreck and whenever needed, from the beaches. Expenditure on the project to date has brought employment and more than NZ$70m into the local economy.

The stern section of the Rena lies in deep water alongside the Astrolabe Reef (Otaiti) – with the rudder at about 65m deep.

The uppermost parts of the structure sit about 10m below the breaking surf. It is a difficult and dangerous environment to operate in all but the best of weather and a safety zone around the salvage operation is necessary for health and safety reasons.

Stage two of the offshore operation is progressing well and involves a process of cutting up small pieces of steel and removing them by helicopter. This has never been done at other wreck sites and the weather in the Bay of Plenty has, and will no doubt continue to, present major challenges. This has added significantly to the time it would otherwise take to do this work; but the delays are giving us an insight into how well the reef can recover.

Although there are many technical and logistical challenges ahead of us – the overriding considerations are that the work is done safely, without injury to any of the brave people working in a dynamic environment on a platform inclined at 33 degrees, which is usually wet and treacherous.

We have engaged a local consultancy team to undertake a review of what is appropriate for the future of the wreck.

They will be collating technical reports from many experts on the environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts of the options that exist for what will remain of the vessel once Resolve’s work is completed.

The options that may be available range from the removal of as much ship and debris as modern technology safely permits; to a combination of removal and making safe parts of the wreck so that it can become inhabited as an artificial reef, already populated with marine species. The complete wreck removal would take several years and involve large salvage equipment having the potential to impact on the area around the reef.

This means we have to consider all other options as well.

We anticipate that another bulletin will be sent out in the near future to provide further information and advise of Open Days at which our team’s findings can be explained to the local communities. We want to hear your views and concerns.

As I said, the owners and insurers of the Rena wish to advance this project on Astrolabe Reef (Otaiti) in a responsible way.

How this can best be done is still not clear to us and to those working with us.

Tennyson was facing a charge of indecent assault in relation to an incident on September 10, 2011, where he approached a woman on the forecourt of the service station saying to her had a job for her.

Court documents show he contacted her after suggesting she submit her CV and said he would pick her up for a job interview.

Having recently lost a full-time job, the woman agreed and thought Tennyson would take her to the service station for an interview.

Instead he drove her to his home and offered a beer.

Sitting on the couch the woman started asking questions about the job when Tennyson made unwanted sexual advances, kissing her on the neck and telling her he had a crush on her.

After refusing his advances and pushing him away on several occasions, Tennyson apologised for his actions and drove the woman home.

As part of his sentence, Tennyson has been ordered to pay the woman $1000 in reparation.

The captain and first officer of the containership Rena are freed from jail and have been deported to the Philippines.

Master Mauro Balomaga, 44, and navigational officer Leonil Relon, 37, were sentenced to seven months in jail in May after earlier pleading guilty to operating a vessel in a manner likely to cause danger, discharging a contaminant, and altering ship documents.

Because they are non-violent crimes the men become eligible for parole after serving half their sentences.

Balomaga’s lawyer Paul Mabey QC says the pair served their sentences in Waikeria prison, but on Wednesday were transferred to Auckland prison for convenience of the transfer to an aircraft.

Faculty of Education News From the Dean: University predicts teacher shortage looming :

Preparing future teachers is becoming more important than ever before as predictions on school roll totals up to the year 2030 show New Zealand will be facing a teacher shortage in the next few years.

PROFESSOR ROGER MOLTZEN

Ministry of Education data shows students enrolled in primary schools will increase steadily until 2019, by which time there will be 44,500 more students than in 2011. Faculty of Education Dean Professor Roger Moltzen says there’s no better time to enrol in a quality teacher education programme.

“School rolls are already increasing so students who begin their studies in 2013 are likely to face excellent job prospects by the time they graduate at the end of 2015.”

Professor Moltzen says at the beginning of 2016 approximately 1,150 additional primary teachers will be needed around the country to cope with the increased enrolments, based on an average class size of 27 students.

The crunch time for secondary teachers is expected around 2019 when enrolments begin to escalate steadily and reach a peak in 2024.

Figures show New Zealand is at the end of a downward trend of falling school rolls. However a gradual increase in birth rates since 2004, and particularly from 2007, means the country will see large cohorts begin entering primary school over the next few years. Professor Moltzen says a number of trends point to a teacher shortage in the next few years.

“Other factors such as the numbers of teachers nearing retirement age and the large numbers of graduates who move overseas or seek employment in other professions will also have a huge impact on the scenarios.”

Further evidence is shown in population projections.

By 2031 New Zealand will have a population of over 5 million people, with numbers in the Auckland region rising by over 500,000 – the biggest increase in the country – followed by a growth of over 130,000 people in the Waikato Bay of Plenty region, according to predictions from the National Infrastructure Unit.

“Teaching is an important, rewarding and highly soughtafter profession and current data shows well-trained, enthusiastic teachers are likely to be in continuous demand for some time to come.”

Postgraduate study options in healthy demand While Government may have shelved current plans to make teacher education a postgraduate qualification, the University’s Associate Dean of Teacher Education says Waikato always has teacher education programmes available to cater for people looking for study options at a higher level.

Beverley Cooper says many teachers are taking the opportunity to study at postgraduate level and the University offers a range of programmes, including summer school and online options, at both the Tauranga and Hamilton campuses.

Mrs Cooper says it is often an expectation that people seeking promotion to leadership positions in schools have postgraduate qualifications.

“Our programmes offer excellent opportunities for professional development and lead onto postgraduate diplomas or masters degrees. These qualifications enable teachers to think deeply about, and reflect on, their teaching and in doing so, support their practice,” she says.

Prior to this year’s budget it was announced that teacher education would become a postgraduate qualification by 2015, meaning that a person would need a degree before they applied to become a teacher. Recently the Government deferred these plans advising that teacher education would remain in its current form for the immediate future but that there will continue to be further discussion with stakeholders.

Currently the University offers a range of teacher education programmes including: three-year Bachelor of Teaching programmes in primary and early childhood, four-year conjoint programmes in primary and secondary, and oneyear graduate diploma programmes in primary, secondary and early childhood for people who already hold a degree.

Two-year programmes for career changers intending to become technology teachers are unique to Waikato.

“Each pathway caters for a wide range of different groups and different needs, and we will continue to offer all of these high quality programmes into the future.

Faculty of Education News Tutor role spurs life-changing decision to teach Denise Edmonds had never considered teaching her calling until she spent a year tutoring secondary students in England and suddenly made a ‘lifechanging’ decision.

Inspired to make teaching her career, she scrapped plans to continue with her travels, sent off her application to the University of Waikato and by the beginning of 2010 was in Tauranga embarking on her Graduate Diploma of Teaching – Secondary.

“Teaching totally grabbed me and I couldn’t wait to get home and start the course. It was a life-changing decision and I’ve never looked back.”

Denise now teaches junior and senior English at Mount Maunganui College as well as junior drama and says despite first day jitters, she quickly found her feet and absolutely loves her job.

“The course set me up extremely well to get out there and apply for positions and start teaching.

We had lots of practical assignments and placements in schools so you know exactly what you’re going to face on the job.”

Denise, 27, completed her Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in English and Film, TV and Media Studies at the University of Auckland, and said she chose to study in Tauranga because she was attracted to the smaller class sizes as well as living in the Bay of Plenty.

“It was a huge advantage having a smaller group because the lecturer was able to connect with each of us individually and provided excellent advice and support.”

During the one-year course, students cover themes such as the New Zealand curriculum, assessment, qualifications, school organisation, teaching and learning processes, educational issues and practices.

Students are also assigned specialist tutors to work through curriculum papers in the subject they intend to teach and gain full-time practical teaching experience in local secondary schools.

Educational research flourishes in the Bay of Plenty Income generated from research conducted by the University of Waikato exceeded $30 million last year and at a function for stakeholders in July, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Crawford reported the increase is being seen particularly in the Bay of Plenty.

Partnership and Liaison Manager Dr Nigel Calder says several research projects working alongside local schools are currently underway at the University’s Tauranga campus.

“Our Tauranga staff make major contributions to teacher education and their research helps inform and shape professional teaching practice nationally and internationally. We are also very fortunate to work with a number of excellent partnership schools in the region which support us in our research.”

Mathematics in a digital world Digital technologies have opened up a whole new world of learning opportunities, and in his 2011 book Processing Mathematics Through Digital Technologies, Dr Calder examines how digital technologies have changed the way primary school children learn and understand mathematics.

The research shows digital media opens up more possibilities, like exploring number patterns and geometric shapes, or creating and analysing graphs and data. The learning experience is visual and interactive and, as the feedback and results are immediate, students question how a result was reached which stimulates mathematical thinking. It involved working with children from eight local schools.

Dr Calder’s current research involves examining the ways in which mathematical thinking emerges in student-centred inquiry and using iPod mathematical apps.

Connecting curriculum Senior lecturer in teacher education Barb Whyte has been working with Hamilton-based colleagues to examine the ways in which the arts can be meaningfully integrated with other curriculum areas. Results are now being collated into a book which is expected to be published by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research early next year. The two-year project involved three primary schools in the Bay of Plenty and two in Hamilton.

The team focused on children’s learning during arts-based integration and the connections made, and how themes such as drama and visual art fostered children’s learning in other areas such as science, technology, literacy, and ICT. Ms Whyte says a key part of the research was how arts-based integration fostered children’s engagement in learning.

As part of the project, the team is trialled a tool to assess engagement and learning.

“Every-body counts” What shapes health and physical education in our primary schools is the focus of a Teaching and Learning Research Initiative (TLRI) funded study by researchers at the Universities of Waikato and Otago. Tauranga-based Marg Cosgriff is part of a team investigating what health and physical education (HPE) looks like in primary schools, how national health initiatives are impacting teaching and learning, and alternate ways that HPE can be delivered.

Ms Cosgriff says the study – Every-body counts? Understanding health and physical education in the primary school – is important because not much is currently known about what happens with HPE in primary schools or the influence of the extraordinary amount of health policy information that schools receive on HPE programmes and practice.

Adopting an ‘Every-body counts’ approach to HPE is already bearing positive outcomes for student learning and classroom culture, the researchers say. The project will be completed early next year.

Meeting the learning needs of Māori students LIFE-CHANGING DECISION: Denise Edmonds now teaches English and drama at Mount Maunganui College.

Established in 2010, the He Kakano project is jointly delivered by the University’s Faculty of Education and Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi to 88 secondary and area schools around the country. Faculty of Education News Early Childhood student aspires to future research When teacher education student Shinaye Apaapa started her one-year National Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic in 2009, she had no idea she would eventually be contemplating postgraduate research.

Following her certificate programme, Shinaye was accepted into the University of Waikato’s Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood) in Tauranga and is now in her final semester of the three-year programme. She says her goal for 2013 is to work in the early childhood field, but further research is also part of her future plans.

“It made me realise how much I wanted to continue my learning in the early childhood area and now I’m looking forward to getting a lot of different work experience to put my learning into practice.

“I believe early childhood teachers can make the most difference to young people’s lives because we are helping them to understand their place in the world and setting them up to learn and continue learning in the future.”

As well as enjoying the practical assignments working in early childhood centres, Shinaye has thrived on the theoretical component of the programme, finding the issues discussed have opened her eyes to the attributes as well as potential gaps in the education system.

Shinaye, from Te Puna, says studying at Tauranga has been fantastic because it has allowed her to continue living at home on the family orchard and develop close friendships with other students.

“I strongly believe everyone has the opportunity to learn regardless of their abilities and hope to carry out research on this topic in the future. I’d like to influence improvements around inclusive education and be able to teach and inform others.”

“We are a relatively small and very close group and some of us have been together since the Certificate programme.

I’ve also found the teachers really accessible to the students and they help reinforce the learning by sharing their own experiences with the class.”

Father and son duo study towards teaching goals Watching his dad pour hours into his first year at university didn’t put Sam Cleaver off tertiary study – in fact it strengthened his resolve to complete a degree, and father and son are now studying alongside each other at the University of Waikato’s Tauranga campus.

The Cleavers, from Tauranga, are working towards their Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) degrees. Sam, who completed Aquinas College in 2011, started university this year, joining his father Peter who has been on campus two years and is now nearing the end of his third year of study.

Despite being enrolled on the same programme, Sam says he doesn’t see his Dad much on campus as they are usually so involved in their own studies.

A keen sportsman and coach of younger players, his decision to go teaching was confirmed last year when he spent time in Fiji helping to build a house for a local family.

“Being able to help the family and work with the local children made it a really rewarding experience. It just confirmed my goal to have a career working with young people and helping to make a difference,” says Sam.

Six months into the programme he says he’s learning a lot academically as well as personally.

“It can be nerve-wracking taking a lesson in a real classroom but I’ve discovered I’m really confident speaking in front of a group of people.”

Coming to teaching later in life has not deterred Peter from following the goal he had when he first left school.

A fulfilling sales and marketing career, bringing up a young family and starting up his own business meant his original plans were put on hold until four years ago, when he sat down and considered his next career move.

“I was always very involved in my children’s schooling as well as leading church youth groups, and teaching just seemed like the next logical step. I’m the oldest in the class, but my age has never been a problem. The biggest challenge was getting back into academic study,” he says.

Peter quickly found his feet with academia and has maintained high marks across the three years. He says he has found the practical components of the course particularly helpful and now looks forward to having his own class.

Peter credits his success to the ‘incredible’ support of his wife Glennis who continued running the family’s specialised direct mail business single-handedly. Being able to study in Tauranga has also worked well for both students, who say they are enjoying the smaller classroom sizes and the opportunity to learn from ‘inspirational’ teaching staff.

Faculty of Education News Teaching excellence recognition for Tauranga lecturer Tauranga lecturer Chris Brough was one of 12 academics from around the country to be recognised at the Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards ceremony held in July.

Chris is a senior tutor with the Faculty of Education and teaches on the Bachelor of Education (Primary) programme in Tauranga. The esteemed awards of $20,000 each recognise sustained excellence in tertiary teaching.

Chris said her own experiences have shaped her vision and influenced the way she teaches.

“I first became a teacher because I was passionate about motivating and teaching children. It was my goal to make learning meaningful, positive and highly engaging to every student in the class.

“Now as a tertiary educator, I believe it is my role to inspire my student teachers to become active lifelong learners who are knowledgeable about learning, teaching, and literacy, and who subsequently make a positive difference in the lives of the children they teach.”

The Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards were established in 2002 to celebrate excellence in tertiary teaching at a national level.

Practicums revolutionised A new partnership between schools and Faculty of Education lecturers has revolutionised practicum for primary teacher education students.

Practicum, where student teachers work alongside an experienced classroom teacher, is a compulsory requirement of all teacher education programmes.

The new partnership entitled CUSP (Collaborative University School Partnerships) has given first year primary student teachers the opportunity to spend a full day each week in the first semester, half a day in the second semester, and culminating with a three to four week block all in the same classroom.

Currently nine schools in Hamilton are involved in the CUSP project. A teacher in each school has been formally appointed as an honorary lecturer and they have co-taught a professional practice paper alongside a Faculty lecturer within the school setting.

“The support from trainers and mentors takes away the barriers to learning while competing and training at a high level. I still have to put in the hard yards like everyone else and maintain good grades, but if I need to be out of town competing then I’m supported to take those opportunities.”

Associate Dean of Teacher Education Beverley Cooper says CUSP has provided opportunities for student teachers and their pupils to get to know each other over a long-term basis and enabled student teachers and classroom teachers to form stronger collegial relationships.

Andrew is among 11 Waikato students who received a highly prestigious New Zealand Universities Blues Award this year and last year he received a Waikato University Blues Award.

“The initiatives have been very successful and schools feel the first year experience has been strengthened and is more coherent.”

The University of Waikato has numerous scholarships available to school leavers and those beginning tertiary study as mature students. Funding ranges from partial funding of course fees to full funding of your entire course of study.

Tauranga September rainfalls 1898-2011 Rainfalls for the month of September have been recorded in Tauranga since 1898, except for 1904, 1907, 1908, and 1909.

The graph shows the range of rainfalls from an extreme high of 274mm in 1973 to a low of only 16mm in 1965. The second wettest September was 1900 when 256mm was recorded, and the second driest September was in 1944 when only 27mm fell. The long-term average rainfall for Tauranga for September is 106mm. The graph of the September rainfall shows normal variations from year to year. There is a very small decrease in the average of the September rainfalls during the last 50 years (1961-2010) from an average of 103mm, compared with an average of 105mm during the 50 years from 1911-1960. This is similar to the months of January, February, April, May, June, July and August during the same periods, which also show small decreases in the overall rainfalls

during the last 100 years, compared with a small increase in the March rainfalls. Since 1898, there have been five September months with a rainfall of 200mm or more (four of which occurred during the period 1900 to 1928, and only one September month since then), compared with six September months with a rainfalls of 40mm or less.

Fathers’ Day winner challenges others When Matt Bedford was standing at the Fathers’ Day Out event listening to his eldest daughter’s letter written nominating him for 2012 Dad of the Year, he was reminded of what it takes to be a good dad.

Matt’s eldest daughter Caydence, 10, wrote about the silly songs and stories that include her name in the words that she finds humorous and other memories she has with her father.

“Those were the little things,” says Matt.

“It’s not about the big things that you do, it’s about the little things that you do every day.”

Matt, who works at Chipmunks in Tauranga and part-time at Tauranga Judo Club, says spending time with his children is what matters.

Centre manager Cindi Lett says there has been a huge demand for the adrenalinepumping, fast-paced action programmes at Coast Kids, opening October 1.

Coast Kids Extreme will have the Bay’s only Clip ’n’ Climb climbing walls. These are a revolutionary way to rock climb without the need for a belay person at the bottom. Rock climbing this way means a super-safe, fun way to climb and is suitable for children of all ages, says Cindi.

The centre also features a massive pirate ship playground with a Walk the Plank mini





foam pit, tunnel slide, foosball and air hockey area for the junior children.

On the mezzanine the seniors’ area is complete with a large parkour style foam pit, trampoline, pool table, table tennis, air hockey, foosball and a chill-out zone.

Children of all ages can get creative in the arts and crafts room and relax in the large TV, DVD and Xbox room.

They can also get active in the indoor skate area with a game of roller hockey, scootering, skateboarding or learn some new tricks on the awesome indoor half pipe skate ramp, with skateboards, scooters and roller blades provided.

WINZ subsidies are available and programmes may cost from just $2.90 per day for holidays and $12 for a full week of after school care.

I reminded him however of some of the highlights from Flo’s upbringing – we’ll call it Flo’s Greatest Hits.

She started by chewing off the seat belt in the car.

The boss said that showed a lack of restraint.

Then the attack on his cowboy line dancing boots, which was a spur of the moment thing.

Most spectacular was the chomping of the roman blind cord – that was quite a let down.

The mauling of the door knob must demonstrate a need for closure.

We both worked on Uncle’s duvet – but can’t disclose much more since it was an under cover operation.

Then the attack on the leather belt and zipper on the boss’s hunting pants. Very below the belt and done on the fly.

There’s been some damage in the backyard too, with holes in the lawn. The boss is looking into it.

Calling all kitties from low income families A Tauranga woman is seeking help for her new charity helping financially struggling families de-sex their pets.

Jan Cooper started KittyCat Fixers in May with the aim of reducing the large numbers of unwanted animals in the Bay. She has already helped about 80 people de-sex their pet.

“Finding customers is not a problem,” says Jan. “What I really want to focus on is finding people who can help financially.”

In Tauranga, de-sexing a male cat costs between $49 and $100, while a female operation, which is more complicated, can cost owners $99-$140, says Jan.

KittyCat Fixers charges owners $20 and Jan pays the remainder of the vet bill herself.

A self-professed cat lover, she decided to start the charity after her volunteer work at Tauranga SPCA exposed her to the sheer number of stray cats in the area. “We all know there are stray cats – but it’s until you’re faced with it in its brutal reality, you realise there is a huge problem.

“The SPCA does a wonderful job, but they are the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. The real problem is that too many people in this country don’t de-sex their animals.

“I just felt here needed to be a onestop-shop where people could get help financially to de-sex their pets and that’s how it started.”

How to not lose your pets If your pet gets lost, how do you find them?

We have many lost animals brought in to our clinic, especially cats who can often end up stowing away in removal trucks, covered boats and tradesmen’s vehicles. Often they are brought straight in, but sometimes they have been hanging around for quite some time. And if they have no ID tag or microchip, it can be very difficult finding their owners. It is especially heart breaking when we have unwell elderly cats that have lost their home and we are unable to find their owners.

ID tags are good, because

whoever finds the animal is able to return them directly to you. However, collars can get lost, and some cats don’t like to wear them.

Microchips are the size of a grain of rice, and are injected under the skin on the back of the neck. They contain a 15-digit number that can be scanned by vet clinics, SPCAs and city and district councils. We are then able to check the New Zealand registry online, to find the owners’ details.

And there are now cat doors available that you can program with your pet’s microchip numbers, so only they can use it!

If you find or lose a pet, ring your local SPCA and vet clinics, and drop flyers in your neighbours’ letterboxes, to help get them home as soon as possible.

Government head banging councils should stop The double speak of some politicians in successive governments can be breath-taking.

This week Gerry Brownlee extolled the virtues of a new stadium for Christchurch. This despite him acknowledging that the capital cost of a new stadium is an uneconomic proposition. Mr Brownlee is part of a Government telling local government to get its economic house in order on the one hand and on the other advocating – quite correctly – that this sort of infrastructure is a desirable but uneconomic necessity in the community. Particularly Christchurch. This is not to demean a new Christchurch stadium but to use this example as a valid instance of the demands on ratepayers that add ‘uneconomic’ debt to a council balance sheet.

Balancing act One way of balancing out this unfair situation would be for central government to contribute a significant proportion of the cost of strategically planned major infrastructure up and down New Zealand. So there could be museums, art galleries, and stadiums – all ‘uneconomic’ – accessible across a region rather than each city.

Something like V8 Supercars where Government finally stepped in to assist – after Hamilton failed financially. But don’t beat local government over the head over finances while you are demanding councils provide uneconomic facilities, services and attractions solely at ratepayers’ expense.

In 1996 in the UK on other council business I visited Chelsea Stadium along with others to have a look at its operation. No, there wasn’t a game on! We met the owner, who told us the sad economics of stadiums. At that time it was privately owned and to make ends meet they were hiring out for weddings, funerals, parties – almost anything you could think of.

He told us he would get a much better return on capital with bank deposits. And that’s one of London’s major stadiums at the time.

At Strategy and Policy Committee we had 38 minutes on tree removal. Two silver birch trees in Burnt Oak Drive, Pyes Pa, have grown massively and are causing havoc to the immediate neighbours. Council policy is not to plant more silver birches but those that are already there seem to get unjustified protection. If you’ve ever lived by silver birches you’ll understand the grief they can cause. In two

houses we have lived in the debris at certain times of the year meant we had to keep them closed up to prevent the inside being covered in those tiny little biddy-bids. This should be dealt with by staff under delegated authority with reasonable criteria. The two trees are to be removed and replaced with more suitable trees in consultation with neighbours.

Petitioners will meet half the cost of removal and replacement.

A further debate on key issues for ratepayer funded Smartgrowth Growth Management.

We agreed that Smartgrowth considerations will now be geared to a 275,000 city population but with no timeline. At present its 250,000 by 2050. Urban limits will be retained but consideration will be given to criteria for development outside urban limits. Alternative infrastructure funding options – see above item on stadiums – are on the radar.

Nothing is likely to happen with this unless central government joins in. Items on the list are the regional council infrastructure fund; currently $188 million or thereabouts.

Good luck on that one. Zero or low interest loans from Government. Good luck there too. Central government grants and subsidies.

Regional income or payroll tax, regional GST/sales tax, visitor tax, airport departure tax amongst other unproductive monopolistic taxes.

Almost a chapter to add to Alice in Wonderland in my opinion.

And finally, location and alignment of infrastructure capacity.

Now that’s a good idea but it needs to be done now and not drag on as some of the Smartgrowth initiatives have done. Rather than focus on

amalgamation (which creates more problems than it solves) planning and spending on facilities and services across a region, avoiding duplication and sharing the costs – including Government – seems far more sensible.

Certainly they make some valid points. If you provide your own facilities, self-containment of wastes, what is the difference between parking the CSC and sleeping in a parked CSC? Of course, there’s the others who aren’t self-contained and just have a mattress in the back, and who polices this, and how? These and other considerations will be deliberated in a fortnight’s time. At present council says you may overnight in five designated places three CSC at a time. But Government has now decreed, we are informed, that now a CSC can overnight where it likes and councils must designate where you may NOT stay and give a reason why. The meeting was ducking and diving to get through the agenda as some

Perceived choices a slippery slope One of my favourite quotes from Jim Morrison in the American Prayer album is: “Did you know freedom exists in a school book?”

What Morrison is referring to is that freedom can have many guises depending on who you are and what situation you find yourself in.

For me and many others, freedom in a financial sense is a lot about understanding the true power of saving.

I think the trick here is financial freedom is not about spending all your money every week. Spending all your money on whatever you want without a plan is, in reality, you being controlled by clever marketing which has created

warped social expectations.

Being controlled is not freedom. Ben Franklin found freedom from his older brother’s negative attention by saving enough to leave his apprenticeship to start a new life in a different city. In this example the change in Ben Franklin’s life created by his ability to save helped change American history. That is the power of saving – it gives you real choices not just perceived ones.

Being able to start your life again through saving is a lot more powerful than choosing which pair of shoes you are buying this week.

So when you are thinking about saving versus spending remember it’s about the power of real choices over perceived ones.

I know which one I prefer.

Racists demand separate rights Greedy grievers? Govt pandering to Maori Opinion is divided between those who feel separate ethnic rights are wrong and separatists who believe that such rights are justified and should be enhanced.

The misinformation from the separatists at times reaches astonishing levels.

Peter Dey’s stand that special rights are justified is ‘because they have been passed by Parliament.’ He seems oblivious that since time immemorial governing bodies have passed legislation that led to some of the worst injustices and atrocities ever seen. He must believe these were somehow all OK too.

Together with others like T. Tukaokao and H. Robb they are fond of labelling their opponents ‘racist’ and ‘xenophobic’.

A racist is someone who believes in special rights and privileges due to race.

This is the opposite of those arguing for equal rights but certainly fits the separatists beliefs very well. Xenophobia refers to fear or hatred of people from other countries. It is hard to see how this

applies to people wanting one law for all regardless of origin but it can easily apply to those believing they are ethnically superior and wanting additional and exclusive rights away from the remainder of the population. Separatists may find a course in definitions and a mirror worthwhile as they seem more than a little confused.

I like many New Zealanders, only really took an interest in ‘maori’ claims with the Foreshore & Seabed fiasco, Constitutional Reform and now the novel claim for the control of water.

There is real concern over the lack of impartiality and conflict of interest issues surrounding the Waitangi Tribunal and its inability to view claims objectively.

On the water, lakes, river beds, etc. PM. Key was right, no one owns the water per se, it is administered by the Government on behalf of all New Zealanders, the Foreshore and Seabed must be Government controlled and the composition of the Constitutional Reform Committee frankly defies belief.

Only one legitimate Treaty of Waitangi exists that is the Maori version (Tiriti-o-Waitangi) there is no English version.

The Treaty itself is a benign document that all New Zealanders could live with, the paramount words being “The Queen of England confirms and guarantees to the Chiefs and Tribes and to all people of NZ”. The 1974 Act has an absurdly wide meaning for ‘maori’ and no minimum ethnicity requirement exists.

Make no mistake the claims now surfacing are all about money, royalties, gravy train exploitation and control. Genuine historical claims had some merit but this lot is something else altogether.

Myths, folksy tales and taniwhas have no place in the equation.

Meanwhile Maori are demanding shares and a say in the running of the company with Tainui saying they want their shares in the company allotted in the interim before the government launches the sale of the company.

Maori demand more and more and the gravy train gets bigger and bigger while other NZ’ers lose their jobs and make endless cuts in almost everything so this can be gifted to Maori.

I say to the government forget the sale of the SOEs if Maori continually make these demands and tell them “No Sale Equates To No Money To Pay For Future Treaty Settlements”. This government through their pandering to Maori has caused more greed and racial division in this country than any other I have ever known. They only have themselves to blame for the situation they now find themselves in. Roll on the next Election.

Preferential treatment

It concerns me, as it should most other New Zealanders that in the issue of The Weekend Sun 28 July, there were a total of five letters expressing dissatisfaction with the seemingly preferential treatment being given to Maori. This is a worry to myself as well. But the more serious concern is that these reactions are an indication of the emergency of racialism in this country.

Whether we, as New Zealanders want it or not, I fear we are heading towards the path of racial unrest.

The only answer is to treat all people on a level playing field.

Simple truth in stone Newsworthy or a dig?

I guess, despite the rising tide of opposition to these continuing and sometimes amazing Maori claims, that there are still people out there who are undecided one way or another.

It may help them to note that John Logan Campbell, who gave One Tree Hill to Auckland, and the Nation, and thought highly of the Maori race, has the following words on the west side of the base that bears the obelisk above his grave on the summit.

They are carved into the stone and read: ‘In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed whereby the Maoris accepted the sovereignty of the British crown and were thereby secured in all their rights and privileges as British subjects.’

Plain and simple, and there for all to see if they wish, and don’t tell Key and Co or the Maori Party, as they would rather that none of you were aware of such simple truth. R McGuinness, Tauranga.

A news reported today 3 Sept highlighted the fact that someone attended a naturopath for 18 months with a lesion on her head.

The naturopath was aware that it looked cancerous.

This patient died some two years later.

Now one wonders is it so rare that a patient of a natural therapist dies that this case became newsworthy or is just another dig at natural therapists?

It is quite normal for one to attend an Allopathic Dr with a life threatening disease that a doctor is aware of and the patient may die, as is often the case so what is the difference in the two considerations.

Another question could be was the patient with the lesion attending an allopathic team or even receiving treatment for a hospital and if she was why wasn’t it mentioned that this was the case.

It was good to see National Cabinet Ministers, the Rt Hon Tony Ryall MP and Rt Hon Simon Bridges eventually deciding after some indecision to vote no to the first reading of the gay marriage bill. Unlike their leader the Rt Hon John Key PM who voted yes, these two local constituency cabinet ministers finally realised that a yes vote would have been a loss of votes in 2014’s general election.

However as it was a conscience vote these two politicians should have consulted widely in their electorates to see what the people really wanted - they didn’t.

So yes, Brendon Horan, NZ First list MP is quite right - a referendum is required.

Brendon, do you and Winston and the six others really want a referendum or are you just grandstanding?

How are you going to do it? Join forces with all the other ‘no’ MPs? Is a 51/49% majority enough? What’s NZ First’s current stand on binding referenda?

Anyhow, congratulations Brendon for voting along with Tony and Simon. Do keep us informed, perhaps through this free, widely read newspaper.

KiwiRail’s draft infrastructure business plan should be of real concern to all.

At a time when the country is facing record high fuel prices, the Government should be upgrading the network so that more freight and passengers can be carried on it, more quickly. New Zealand needs a fast, well-maintained rail network where trains can travel at 80-100km/hr along main trunk lines running the length and breadth of the country, from Whangarei to Invercargill, Hamilton to Awakeri.

A railcar service needs to be introduced to the Bay of Plenty running between Auckland and Mount Maunganui, using one of KiwiRail’s fast Silver Fern railcars.

Path to corporatisation?

I thought we lived in a democracy in New Zealand where the Government is elected as representatives of the people and their wishes.

Watching John Key in action arrogantly ignoring the growing number of people calling for a halt to the proposed asset sales I am left wondering if he has a hidden agenda. He has his Government steering a path of corporatising the country, relinquishing power and profits to overseas companies.

Is this the price we must pay to satisfy the greed of his old networks of bankers such as Goldman Sachs, the Federal Reserve and Merrill Lynch?

I only hope that we can stop this process of growing the divide between the few wealthy people in New Zealand and the swelling number of poor. We risk our enslavement to the banks as we struggle to survive.

of the good ship Kokomo - a duo who quite simply and eloquently do here that which all those who regard themselves musicians live to do: kick back and play, with absolute style and musicianship, the songs, the stories that have become part of the warp and weft of the musical tapestry they have woven for themselves thus far.

And they do it here, I suspect, as much for their own joy and pleasure, as ours.

Social Fretwork (the bro’s second outing thus far), is a collection of mostly other musicians’ works, with nine covers and three Jacombs’ originals. In this instance, the guys have chosen pieces (the exception being the C. Porter/R. Fletcher penned “Don’t Fence Me

In”) from a list of their contemporaries. Musical luminaries as unique and diverse as Elvis Costello to John Fogerty, Lyle Lovett to Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan to Tom Waits - modern musical maestros all - are accorded a rye wink and nod from the boys, as they have their tunes re-spun and autographed, compliments of the gentle folk/country/ragged-up blues stylings that The Self-Righteous Brothers do so terribly well.

I think the recommendation made in the CD liner notes instruct admirably on how best to treat and enjoy this collection of songs. This is my spin on it. Stoke the fire, turn down the lights, have adequate supply of your tipple of choice close at hand…and push ‘play’.

When the Nazis invade, the children’s Jewish and German families must save each other from the forces of both fascism and communism.

A SEPARATION Dir: Asghar Farhadi - Starring: Leila Hatami, Peyman Moadi, Skahab Hosseini A Separation won this year’s Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. It also won at the Golden Globes and was named Best Film at both the Berlin and Sydney film festivals. It wasn’t an accident.

The story centres on married couple Simin and Nader who are denied a divorce by a judge. He tells them to work it out. Problem is that she wants to leave Iran to give a better life to their 11 year old daughter while he wants to stay to It’s long been recognised that there is a market for movies amongst the older generation and the latest film aiming squarely for that demographic is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel . And it’s a lot of fun. Assembling a bunch of Britain’s finest (Judy Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith et al) and setting them loose in India, to a hotel where they plan to ‘retire’, only to find it in less than pristine condition, is a rather inspired set-up and the gentle wit and wonderful characters will serve to warm the hardest heart. Even I laughed out loud – those Brits do this stuff awfully well.

So I guess this Iranian film will suffer the same fate. But it is extraordinary stuff, drama so keenly observed and so multi-faceted that it has the tension of a thriller. Superb acting, a brilliant screenplay, intelligent direction, this has it all.

It’s a potent glimpse of how different, and how alike, all our lives are, fully deserving of its international accolades.

Building gratitude is not only healthy for our planet, it creates a healthy environment within our own being.

Playing away right at home Janet Shaw’s ‘Playing Away’ opened in front of an appreciative audience at 16th Avenue Theatre on Wednesday night.

The play, directed by Michelle McAnulty-Smith, transformed the theatre into an authentic English pub filled with wise old boozers, banter, bravado and more than the odd laugh in an impressive showing.

Things take a turn for the worse in the tight-knit Northern pub when its owners receive some startlingly news which threatens to tear down the entire scene.

Finnlay Martin did very well with a demanding, comedic and at times risqué performance as Danny Silvester, and the 17-year-old was no doubt thrilled to be playing opposite the impressive Margs Burt.

What could these Aussie lads be up to in the quintessential English pub?

Finnlay filled his boots – and some flowing see-through red lingerie at a pivotal juncture – with aplomb, while his accent was among the best of a bunch which varied in quality and consistency.

Stephanie Adams was charming as publican’s daughter Sarah, display-

ing a natural way on the stage far beyond her 17 years of age.

The five year 16th Avenue Theatre veteran is heading to study at the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts next year, and looks like one to watch.

So too Michael Wightman, who was measured and considered in perhaps the most difficult role of the night as the sexually confused Gary.

Shane Murphy and Dallas Baker supplied the backbone as a husband and wife torn apart by a seemingly obvious contradiction, while Geoff Herd and Geraldine Franklin dripped class as Seamus and Gwen.

The rest of the cast were solid, funny and endearing, and it was obvious watching how much the proponents and audience were enjoying the opening night.

Soprano Pepe Becker and harpist Helen Webby met while studying at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague, Holland in 1992.

Tauranga Theatre Organ Society is preparing for an important anniversary.

Tauranga Theatre Organ Society is holding a ‘Wurli Weekend’ to celebrate 40 years of the Wurlitzer entertaining the folk of Tauranga.

The festivities begin on Friday, September 14 with a programme for schools, introducing students to the Wurlitzer and the sounds of the theatre organ. There will be two sessions which will include demonstrations and a silent movie accompanied by the organ.

The following day will feature a theatre organ master class for advanced students of all ages run by organist Scott Harrison, of Melbourne.

This will be followed by afternoon

tea for invited guests, to thank those who have contributed to keeping the 86-year-old organ playing during the past 40 years. The organist for this event will be Len Hockly.

Sunday, September 16 marks 40 years to the day since the organ was first played in Tauranga at the Tauranga Town Hall. To celebrate, there will be a special anniversary concert at Baycourt Theatre from 1.30pm.

Scott will be joined in the second half of the show by Tauranga jazz band Bay Dixie. Scott has worked with jazz bands before and promises a great afternoon’s music - a real celebration.

Tickets, costing $30 for adults and $25.00 for seniors, are on sale now at Baycourt and TicketDirect.

They are bringing their skills to Tauranga this Saturday, September 8 with an enchanting programme telling tales of birth, death and lovers’ unions.

Beginning with haunting Medieval monody (11th Century chant with harp drone), it progresses through to baroque, classical, romantic, 20th century and contemporary works, and

comes full circle by ending with arrangements of Irish folk songs.

After returning to New Zealand in 1993, Pepe founded Baroque Voices, and continues to perform regularly as a soloist and as a member of Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir.

Most recently, she sang a duet with world-renowned countertenor Andreas Scholl during his sole New Zealand performance in Auckland.

Helen graduated from the University of Auckland with a BMus in Harp, and from Houchschule für Musik in Hamburg, Germany with a Masters Degree in Harp and Music Teaching.

Excuses, excuses, excuses We all face two significant spiritual excuses.

One excuse has the theme that the Bible is not true, that there is no afterlife, so this life is all that there is to do and live the way you want.

The other excuse has the theme that the Bible is true and that there is an afterlife and it is in this life that a decision is made as to the destiny of a heaven or a hell where your life is to be lived forever.

Now it can only be that one of the two excuses is true. If it is the first excuse then none of us have anything to worry about because there won’t be worry if

there is nothingness.

If the second excuse is true, then what current first excuse is valid to dismiss or ignore or rubbish or override this truth? What a gamble!

If there is no Biblical afterlife then nobody will win or lose. If the Bible is true about an afterlife for all then there will be winners and losers.

Jesus told a parable about a certain man who prepared a great banquet and invited many guests. (Luke 14:1525) When all was ready it was time for the invited guests to come. Now here is the sad part of the parable: “But

they all alike began to make excuses”.

One after another said “I have just…

Please excuse me”. You are invited by the Lord who gives eternal life to his banquet. Are you saying “I have just… (insert your excuse) it is inconvenient for me to come because I want to be doing what I think is my plausible excuse. Please excuse me.” All of the invited guests in the parable of Jesus who made an excuse to decline going to the banquet lost and were banished.

How foolish were their excuses!

What makes a good father?

Last Sunday was Fathers’ Day and while some call it a commercial racket, I believe that it is good to take time to honour fathers.

In Luke 15:11-24 (NIV) 11 Jesus tells the parable of what we call “the prodigal son” and Jesus talks about a man with two sons. The younger one takes his share of the estate and wastes it and goes further and further into debt and need.

Our attention is on the wasteful, wrongdoing son. But there are three main characters in the story. There are the two boys and of course there is the father and he really deserves a mention.

He has slaved away for years running the farm and accumulating and inheritance for the boys. He gives the younger boy his share in good faith that he will be wise with it but over the ensuing months he wastes it on women, parties and wrong living.

And then one day he turns up smelling like a pig pen. Dirty torn clothes and not a fraction of the man who went away.

Let’s think of dad’s possible responses • Dad could have ignored him

• He could have sent him away • Blasted him for being so silly • Asked for the money back But instead without question he reinstates him. Gives him the ring signifying he is a son in good standing.

Gives him shoes and a robe and without judgement takes him back as his son.

The parable doesn’t actually centre on either father or son. It’s about God and the purpose is to explain the type of father God is to us. That when we go astray and are foolish and wayward, he holds out his hand to us and reinstates us as his own. He restores us back into standing and position with him.

Now you may not have had a father like that or you may not have been that type of father and so it may be hard to comprehend that sort of person.

Your father may have been harsh and judgemental controlling and unfair and the thought that God could be different could be hard to comprehend.

But let’s acknowledge today that our heavenly father (God) exceeds all the qualities of any earthly father and will welcome us home no matter what we have done
