Broken news and other true stories We have all the news that is breaking, and some that was already broken before we found it. Can we fix it? No, but we can make it worse. Or expel it.

An interesting press release arrived from Seafood NZ this week, about Fish of the Month, king salmon. The sender’s name: Krystal Guppy.

We also received news of “groundbreaking research” from the good people at CCS. They report: “New Zealanders with significant disabilities are falling through the cracks and in too many cases are being treated as second class citizens, according to groundbreaking new research.”

RR can see how this happened. The people must have become disabled, due to falling through the cracks – probably caused by the ground breaking.

A call from a telephone canvasser this week asked if the lady of the house was available. I said she was hanging around somewhere, probably upside down in the belfry. The caller hung up.

We’ve had a landslide of feedback from last week’s RR on the subject of the Hobbit. Mostly from those of you

We will be bringing you some more Hobbit disposal schemes soon, including a range of recipes in our forthcoming cookbook, Hobbit on the Hob. But in the meantime, we’ve had some right royal intervention which needs heiring.

Let’s clear the heir

Kate, the future king’s missus, is apparently “expecting” another heir to the throne, and she’s reported to be horribly ill with morning sickness. It is similar to what Charles gets when he wakes up in the mornings, rolls over and sees what’s next to him.

Severe morning sickness can apparently be linked to multiple births. Which raises an interesting question... RR researchers are concerned that, should Kate have twins, how will the Royal Family decide which of them becomes the heir? The first one out? What if they’re delivered by caesarean and it’s not clear who was born first?

And, does the second one become the next heir, bumping all the rest down the order?

Or does the second child from a subsequent pregnancy take precedence on the list over the second twin?

If they are both boys, named William after their father but one is nick-named “The First”, (because he was born first) then if he eventually becomes king, will be called William the First the Sixth?

And if his dad makes him go on a road trip to Scotland, would he become William the First the Sixth going forth with the Fifth near Fife forced first over the Firth of Forth?

But that’s probably not important right now.

Here’s a very interesting but not very useful piece of information: Hours prior to his wedding, Prince William was created Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus of County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

I’m not sure why you needed to know that, but pay attention. You may be tested on all this later.

fathom why Charles would not want to be crowned King Charles, unless, of course, he’s trying to avoid someone or something.

Now, I can tell you, being named Brian has always has its handicaps, no thanks to Monty Python, and a relentless stream of television ad writers taking the mickey. It’s never occurred that I could change my name for the sake of it.

And if anyone’s name was going to have the mickey taken, you’d think it would be Mick, right? But no, Brian seems to be the most piss-taken name in history. There was a dopey Neil on the Young Ones, but it pales compared to the ridicule heaped on

the Brians of the world. If there’s a loser on TV, it’s Brian. Not Jake, or Butch or Brendan. Okay, so maybe Brendan has taken a bit of hammering this week. But still not as picked-on as Brian.

On the illustrious Baby Names website, Brian rates zero out of five. I must ask Dad if he’d mind me switching to Mick the Second, although there could be a tussle with nephew Michael for that title. Someone is going to end up Mick III, which is slightly slower than Mach III. Anyway, in the end it doesn’t matter what we are called, as long as it’s not late for breakfast.

Because if William becomes king and decides to call himself William, he would be William V. But he doesn’t have to use William.

His father Charles has stated that he will be George VII. His great-grandfather Albert ruled as George VI. Wills could, if he wished, use one of his other three names (Philip, Arthur, or Louis). However, there haven’t been any real English or British kings who reigned with those names; William would be the first. He could make it trendy, with a new-age spelling, like Lou!s or ‘Philip The Phirst.’ Or ‘Art, The Artist Formerly Known as Wills.’

Meanwhile, we’re waiting for the day that his grandpop, Prince Phillip, is bestowed an extra title: Lord Knowswhat-Hewillsaynext.

Brendan on the rails Tauranga-based former NZ First list MP, Brendan Horan returned to work on Wednesday, after a long week in politics which saw him sent home, accused of gambling with his mother’s money and kicked out of the NZ First party.

A constitutional quirk of MMP is that while Brendan entered Parliament on the NZ First list, he’s now an MP and cannot be fired by party leader Winston Peters, who can and did expel him from the party. Brendan is now deemed an independent back bencher. The expulsion also saw him evicted from the NZ First parliamentary offices. When Brendan returned to Parliament this week, he was given a new office, but not in the Beehive. After kicking Brendan out of NZ First on Tuesday, Winston said Brendan should resign from Parliament altogether.

Brendan’s lawyer says his client has no intention of leaving Parliament and has not been shown any evidence of the allegations.

Brendan heard about his expulsion from NZ First on the news.

The expulsion will materially disadvantage NZ First. In Parliament, questions in the house and speaking slots in some debates are awarded on the basis of proportionality. New Zealand First can

expect to lose some of its entitlements.

Taxpayer funding for the party will also be affected. As an independent backbench MP, Brendan continues to be paid a salary of $141,800 as well as expenses of $16,100 and an accommodation allowance of up to $24,000. The affair surfaced on November 25 with Brendan’s brother, Mana Ormsby going public with allegations $85,000 is missing from their mother’s account via a series of withdrawals from TABs and ATM machines near Mr Horan’s office in Mount Maunganui, Auckland and Hamilton.

Sun Media has located a TAB that Brendan Horan frequented as recently as about two months ago.

The Mount Turf Bar & TAB is on Maunganui Road near Banks Avenue, about 300m from Brendan’s electorate office on the corner of Rata and Totara Streets.

Mount Turf Bar & TAB duty manager Joe Lagarto says Brendan visited the venue to use its TAB services up until about six or seven weeks ago, saying he bet on site and loaded money on to his TAB account.

“He used the services about two times a week, if that.”

The duty manager could not recall amounts wagered or transferred, but did not believe the transactions were large enough to be considered outside the norm.

“It wasn’t astronomical amounts.

Study sees more trains for Port in future

One of the few certainties coming out of an Upper North Island Strategic Alliance study of central North Island ports is that Tauranga can expect to see more trains.

UNISA comprises territorial authorities from Whangarei district, Hamilton city, Tauranga city and Auckland as well as the regional councils from Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Northland.

It commissioned the recently completed PricewaterhouseCoopers study to see if the upper North Island ports network – Northport, Marsden Point, Auckland and Tauranga – can cope with expected growth over the next 30 years.

The short answer is they can, but as the Port of Tauranga grows there will be more, and longer, trains.

There will be so many trains the port and

KiwiRail may have to build more passing loops, and even consider double tracking the Kaimai Tunnel.

The report says it may also raise ‘reverse sensitivity’ issues from communities close to the rail network due to noise and frequency issues associated with trains.

The report doesn’t say when the new track will have to be built, but adds the rail network is already congested in Auckland, which affects trains to and from Tauranga and the port’s Metroport facility in Penrose.

Tauranga city councillors received and discussed the report on Thursday.

The study, which began in June, was designed to build a common understanding of the current and future freight demand for ports and ports-related infrastructure in the upper North Island, scenarios to meet the

demand and the potential implications.

The upper North Island is where 53 per cent of New Zealanders now live, and by 2041 it is where 59 per cent of New Zealanders are expected to be living. The population in the area is expected to grow from around 2.3m in 2011 to 3.3m in 2041. Auckland is expected to account for around 40 per cent of the country’s population by 2041.

The area currently generates an estimated 53 per cent of New Zealand’s GDP. In industries, such as the wholesale trade sector, the area accounts for 66 per cent of GDP. The three ports in the area handled 45 per cent of New Zealand’s total freight export weights in 2012, with 30 per cent of national export weights shipped through Tauranga.

Kaituna boating threatened by development A marina development near the Kaituna River mouth is threatened by regional council plans to increase river flows through the Maketu Estuary.

The BOP Regional Council voted in October to pursue a policy of returning the river’s flow back along its historical path, the Papahikahawai Channel just behind the foredune, and Ford’s Cut. Work on partially restoring the river flow through the estuary has already begun.

The regional council has allocated money for more work in future years and adopted a policy of restoring the river’s full flow through the estuary.

It is aware of recreational boating and fishing interests at the Te Tumu Cut, but they are not a priority, and the report casually discusses closing access to the entrance and blocking public access to the cut as an option.

A spokesman for Ford Landholdings is wishing for a little more communication and consultation from the regional council. The owners of The Sandhills are

in the process of developing long term plans to grow a town of about 30,000 people on the land between the river and the sea at eastern Papamoa.

Sketched in but not yet filed as a structure plan, is a canal-style marina development larger in scale than the one at Pauanui with access to the sea via a dredged and groined Te Tumu Cut. In October the regional council agree to proceed with altering the river so part of the flow is diverted through the Maketu Estuary in order to improve the sustainable management of the river and estuary resources.

On July 14 this year, council staff allowed tidal flows back into the western end of the Papahikahawai channel by excavating 80m3 of sand from the Maketu Spit. Water quality is monitored weekly.

The regional council has allocated $486,498 in 2012/13 and 2013/14, and $736,498 in 2014/15 within the Sustainable Coastal Implementation Programme and committed to, among other things investigate re-diversion of water from the Kaituna River into Ongatoro/Maketu Estuary.

Reserve opens new history Tauranga’s newest park was officially opened on Thursday with the unveiling of traditional Maori carvings and a series of ceremonies and blessings on the former pa and farmhouse site in Levers Rd. A series of seven pouwhenua mark the entry to Matua’s new 2ha historic reserve, centring around three carved poles representing historic figures for the Ngai Tamarawaho hapu, who had the land confiscated in 1864.

Kaumatua Des Tata paid tribute to Tauranga City Council and former owner Alister Matheson for returning the land to the community. The property was in

the Matheson family since Robert Matheson bought 123 acres for a farm in 1870.

“All the city developers had the cheque books out wanting to buy it, but he didn’t want to sell it to be developed.

“We’re very thankful to that man for allowing that (the council to buy it for a park) to happen. It was very important to him – he was a historic man and had lived there all his life.”

Interpretative signs will be installed soon to recount some of the site’s history, including elements about Maori and European history, and an outdoor classroom area is planned.

Des says it was important to be recounting some of the Matheson family’s history, saying the park was for the whole community.

“It was a pa, it is a pa and it’s

important to remember that – that’s why the waharoa (gateway) had to go up to give the place some meaning, otherwise everyone will still call it the horse paddock. But it’s for the whole community.”

Des says the opening was special for the hapu as it was believed to be the first event held by them on-site since the land was confiscated.

The council, with help from the regional council, bought the land in 2004 off the Matheson family trust for $1,775,500.

It has since spent $112,000 on the project – including $17,200 for landscaping and removing the old farmhouse foundations, $25,000 on carving and $44,000 on fences, gates and a driveway to accommodate buses.

Killer wins right to appeal

The convicted killer of Whakatane girl Emily Longley has won the right to appeal his conviction and sentence.

Elliot Turner, 21, was sentenced to life in prison with a 16 year non-parole period for the murder of 17-year-old Emily Longley in Bournemouth, England, last year.

The Bournemouth Daily Echo reports a Court of Appeal spokesperson says Turner has been granted leave to appeal his conviction and sentence.

Naked runner’s appeal upheld

A 47-year-old man spotted running naked in a forest by a woman near Tauranga last year has had his second appeal upheld in the High Court at Tauranga.

Andrew Lyall Pointon, a naturist for more than 20 years, was found guilty of one charge of offensive behaviour in Tauranga District Court last December after running naked through Oropi Bike Park in August.

He was seen by a woman who felt offended and threatened and lodged a complaint with police.

Three days later Pointon was arrested.

Drug accused charges dropped

The charges against two people accused of being in a suspected drug ring in Te Puke have been dropped.

Luke Wilson, 30, and Wharemoeroa Whare, 18, appeared in Tauranga District Court last week where Judge Louis Bidois dismissed the charges.

Wilson and Whare were facing drug related charges including possession of cannabis for supply, cultivating cannabis and participation in an organised criminal group.

Both were originally arrested in May, along with Hemiona William Ririnui, 29, Nikki Merekeeti Whare, 27, Tiri Kapene, 29, Justin Ngahina Walters, 29, Noel Eugene Walters, 29, and Morehu Selwyn, 18.

Rotorua death: murder charge laid

A 44-year-old woman charged with the assault of Rotorua woman Michelle Hoffman-Tamm has now been charged with her murder.

Gwenda Leigh Sloane, a process worker, appeared in Rotorua District Court today where she was remanded in custody to reappear on Wednesday, December 12.

Michelle Hoffman-Tamm’s body was found in a remote section of SH38.

Sloane was originally charged with assault.

That charge has since been withdrawn and a murder charge has been laid.

Second time polluters fined $74K

Opotiki dairy farmers found guilty of deliberately polluting the Waioeka River with dairy effluent have been fined $74,000.

Riverlock Farms Limited, and directors Ian Brown and Geoffrey Brown, were found guilty following a two-day defended hearing in Whakatane District Court.

The Browns were also convicted and discharged on a charge of breaching an enforcement order imposed as part of a July 2011 sentencing for an earlier offence.

Jail time or fine for abandoning animals Puppies are being abandoned in the Western Bay of Plenty area.

Western Bay of Plenty animal owners face 12 months in jail and/ or a $50,000 fine if they are caught abandoning an animal.

This warning comes after Tauranga SPCA was alerted to a litter of puppies found in a rubbish bin at the Kaituna Cut. Tauranga SPCA inspector Jason Blair says a fisherman who was going for an early morning fish found the puppies when he heard a noise coming from the rubbish bin.

“The puppies are in foster now until they have their first vaccinations and then they will be ready for adoption.

“They were a little underweight but they had no physical health issues.”

Jason says people need to take

responsibility and if they don’t want to have puppies, then they need to have their puppies desexed when they are of age.

He says during the last 18 months the SPCA has been busier than normal with the amount of puppies.

“It seems to be an increasing trend but there has been nothing noticeable in the last couple of months.

“Unfortunately, it has been quite constant for a little while now. We are struggling with the amount of puppies that we have.”

He says it’s an offence to abandon an animal and not provide provisions for its care.

“Offenders face 12 months imprisonment and or a $50,000 fine.”

Thieves getting early present Western Bay of Plenty Police are concerned that too many thieves are being given early Christmas presents as residents continue to leave property unsecured.

Police say vehicles, houses and garages are being left unlocked and valuables are being left in plain view.

Despite appeals through the media in recent weeks to ‘Lock it, Stash it, Carry it’ the increase in thefts from vehicles and burglaries are continuing.

Western Bay of Plenty area commander, inspector Clifford Paxton says it’s the age old adage that ‘prevention is better than cure’ and the best prevention in this case is removing the temptation.

“Thieves look for easy targets and even a few coins lying in the centre consul or an open window can be enough to motivate a villain.

“We can make a dent in this trend but we really need owners to work with us by taking a few simple steps to protect their own property.”

Noisy vehicles on radar People driving vehicles with loud exhausts will be the focus of Tauranga Police this weekend.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager, senior sergeant Ian Campion says they will be focusing on boy racers this weekend as there have been a significant amount of vehicles gathering in the Mount area of late.

He says the last thing residents and visitors want to contend with is excessive noise coming from a boy racer’s exhaust.

“Vehicles stopped will undergo an objective noise test.

“This is conducted by an authorised New Zealand Transport Agency person, who maps and tests the car’s exhaust system.”

Ian says if the car meets the standard requirement, the owner will be issued with a certificate.

“This will be valid until the car is modified, at which point it will have to undergo another test.

“Basically, the vehicle should not be noisier then when it was manufactured.”

The legal noise limit for vehicles in New Zealand is as follows: • Motorcycle or trike with an engine capacity of 125cc or less, 96 decibels.

• Motorcycle or trike with an engine capacity of more than 125cc, 100 decibels.

• Light goods or passenger vehicle (e.g. car, MPV, minibus, ute or van): First registered in NZ before 1 June 2008, 95 decibels.

First registered in NZ on or after 1 June 2008 and manufactured before 1 January 1985, 95 decibels.

• And those manufactured on or after 1 January 1985, 90 decibels.

Suspension on fire permits Dry environmental conditions and high winds have seen a stop to fire permits being issued in the Western Bay of Plenty until further notice.

The suspension has been placed on permits until the region gets a large amount of rain.

Western Bay Moana Rural Fire Authority principal rural fire officer Barry Low says the fire risk is high and the measure has to be taken to prevent a huge fire.

Dry scrub and high winds have seen many Western Bay of Plenty firefighters dealing with vegetation fires throughout the region.

Tauranga firefighters spent around 40 minutes battling a vegetation fire in Te Puna on Monday, December 3.

This was the second vegetation fire in the same area within a week to spark a callout.

The brigade was called to the railway track on Borrell Rd at around 9.40pm.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Nicole Bernard says the fire was around 50m by 5m and was quickly put out.

Brazilian beats attack the Bay

Capoeria exponents Saxon Holloway, Teresa Gosling and Tulio Costa practise the Brazilian martial art routine ahead of next week’s festival in Tauranga.

The Bay is set to come alive to the beats and rhythm of Brazil next week when the annual Capoeira Festival is hosted in Tauranga.

Organiser and capoeira instructor Tulio Costa says the week-long festival is shaping up to be an exciting event with many free workshops and events on offer to introduce people to the Brazilian martial art dance.

“We’ve got free workshops on most days which will teach capoeira techniques and about Brazilian culture and are expecting a lot of interest.”

Pupils at Mount Maunganui Intermediate will also be treated to a performance by top capoeira artists, before being taught some techniques.

Surf’s appealing on National Jandal Day Summer means lazy days with sand between your toes, playing beach cricket and chasing Frisbees.

Summer means jandals, T-shirts and floppy sun hats for some shade.

Summer also means another wave of rescues by surf club volunteers – and drownings.

Western Bay’s beach-lovers are being urged to dig deep on Friday for Surf Life Saving’s National Jandal Day to help surf clubs offer a full lifeguard service to help keep the area’s beaches safe during summer.

Mount Maunganui surf lifesaving club manager Glenn Bradley says services would be cut back without the annual fundraiser.

All clubs in the region will collect donations at shopping centres on the day with funds going back to the clubs that raised them. The Mount club aims to raise $10,000.

The clubs do not receive any government funding, but rely on sponsorship and fundraising to cover costs. Proceeds raised go towards training current and future lifeguards, purchasing essential rescue equipment, and extending services to meet the growing needs of communities.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand CEO Paul Dalton says the appeal is an important event for Surf Life Saving to raise awareness about lifesaving services and raise much needed funds.

“It’s all about protecting our community in the water. The

safety of people on the beach is our core business and lifeguards patrolling the beach are an integral part of that. The beach is New Zealand’s favourite playground and with your support we can ensure it’s safer for everyone.”

Along with patrolling the beach during the day, Glenn says the Mount crew are called out to help with after-hours rescues about twice a month during summer, this year including a dramatic rescue off Matakana Island in April when 13 lifeguards helped four people who had been flipped from their boat. The rescue earned the Rescue of the Month award.

Seven top performers from overseas will take part in the festival, while Tulio says he is also excited to be hosting the Brazilian ambassador at the free showcase event next Saturday.

Capoeira traces its origins to the 16th century when it was created by descendants of African slaves, combining elements of dance and music.

Tulio says since discovering capoeira as a teenager in Brazil, it has given him a passion for life and taught him discipline and focus. He began teaching in Tauranga in 2006.

“When students come to class, it is more than just to get fit, but a total cultural experience where they can also express their personality.”

Wiz is fast making a name for himself internationally in the sport of climbing, rapidly ascending the heady heights towards stardom, and has only just returned from five weeks across the ditch where he became the youngest climber to complete the ascent of a tough and technically demanding climb in Victoria called `Punks in the Gym’.

Wiz hasn’t let the chalk dust settle in his pouch, leaving this week for a Christmas break like no other, joining hordes of other outdoor climbing enthusiasts State-side for three months of high hanging hijinks at Hueco Tanks, an area of low granite mountains in El Paso county.

Papamoa Primary School is offering tennis lessons to students in an attempt to encourage them to try new sports.

A total of 62 children aged 6-11 registered to be a part of the tennis lessons offered on three Wednesday afternoons in the last term of school.

Papamoa Primary School’s health and physical education teacher Hamish Avery says the school sees the importance of children being active and trying new sports.

“This is a great chance to showcase kids

to take the extreme out of extreme sport as much as possible.

“You try not to think about accidents and, touch wood, there hasn’t really been anything nasty.

I’ve had a bunch of big falls but nothing you’d really deem dangerous. When you fall you fall to your next piece of gear so it’s not like it’s 100m or anything. I’ve take some good whacks but nothing major.’’

While the average Kiwi would struggle to comprehend the thrill of hanging upside down 50m above terra firma with only a few fingers wedged in inch-wide cracks carved into the rock face, Wiz, who is sponsored by international gear/apparel suppliers Petzl, 5 10 and Motiv, says his rush was in setting a goal, training for it, then knocking it off.

“There’s always new challenges, not necessarily in higher walls but in higher graded climbs. Now, having done 32 and 33, climbing a 35 is my immediate goal but kind of daunting as well. There’s guys doing 37’s but they’re the legends of the sport.’’

Student stitches up success Turning up to an event in the exact outfit worn by somebody else – it’s a teenage girl’s nightmare, but not for Brydie Mangos.

The Year 10 Tauranga Girls’ College student loves making her own clothes, so she never has to worry about off-the-rack costume clashes. Her love and talent for fashion design has also seen Brydie win her third fashion design prize this year.

“I didn’t think I had a chance at all, so it was a complete surprise.”

Brydie has already turned her attention to making another summer frock, and is playing with the idea of putting her talent to use next ball season by making dresses to order.

“I’ve grown up with fashion and design in my family with my mother, my grandmother and auntie all in to sewing.”

Despite her grandmother’s best efforts to encourage her to get into sewing when she was six, Brydie says it was not she was in Year 7 that she became really interested.

Brydie, who is considering fashion design among a handful of career options, has just won the national Home Economics and Technology’s intermediate technical fashion award for a summer dress she made. It follows a second place and first for workmanship in the Bay of

Isaac Buckley, as part of his Level 3 Product Technology Unit, approached Kaka Street Special School in early 2012 to see if the school required any ideas for an invention he could design and construct.

In discussion with staff, it was decided a frame that could be attached to the students’ standing frame would allow them a greater variety of things to do. Generally, the standing frames come with trays, but no provisions for attaching things to them for the students to interact and entertain themselves.

Kaka Street Special School associate principal Deb Hudson says Isaac arrived at school with many questions, guideline s to follow and safety issues to consider, before presenting design drawings to be looked over.

By the third term, he brought along prototypes to trial on the trays, as well as some refined drawings.

“We were very happy to see his final product and to take ownership of the frame attachment,” says Deb. “We are very grateful to Tauranga Boys’ College for the opportunities to have students like Isaac be involved in our school and to provide items that become useful, educational and motivational in our classrooms for our students.”

Rena artwork needs a home The penguins which survived the Rena oil spill have been released to their new home – but the decision for a unique Rena inspired sculpture to reside in Shark Alley is not yet set in stone.

On November 11 Papamoa artist Peter Cramond created his stone masterpiece, inspired by the release of the Rena damaged penguins, during Craig's Investment Partners Sculpture Symposium. It was then sold at public auction.

val Trust to be displayed publically.

Garden and Arts Festival director John Beech says the trust is negotiating with Tauranga City Council to decide where the sculpture should reside.

“The fact that we are a garden and arts festival, we thought it was a great opportunity to be able to give back to Tauranga City and Bay of Plenty.”

It was also a way to support one of the Bay’s iconic artists, says John.

He says Shark Alley in Mount Maunganui, where the penguins were released after the Rena oil spill, is an appropriate place for the statue.

“That would be our preferred place. We just thought it was a very good fit.”

Peter described his sculpture as an important work of art for Tauranga which can be seen as a thank you to all those who helped with the Rena clean-up.

Peter also designed the gateway, 'An Artist's Lament to His Beach', which was erected at Papamoa Beach after the Rena disaster last year.

The gateway, which formed an arch over a Papamoa Beach entrance, featured three clay birds and a carving of the artist’s head nailed to the wooden frame. The gateway was destroyed by vandals earlier this year.

Music to ambulance’s ears Mount Maunganui Music Club hosts will make a donation of $500 to St John Ambulance on December 8.

Spokesperson Cathy Trounson says the donation is a reflection of what the club is all about – caring, sharing and bringing pleasure. She adds the work of St John volunteers, who work 12-hour shifts by day and night covering prehospital emergencies and providing first aid cover for sporting and cultural events, goes largely unnoticed.

The club, which meets on the second Saturday of every month and favours

no particular genre, opens its doors to any musician or singer wanting to join the resident band.

For a $2 fee, people can listen or play, before enjoying a shared afternoon tea at Mount Maunganui Senior Citizen’s Hall on Maunganui Road.

Club hosts Grant Bulkeley, Peter Dench and Dick Ward welcome all age groups to practise nights held on the Thursday night prior to the club day for no charge.

The voluntary band, boasting more than 200 years’ experience, comprises lead, rhythm and bass guitars, drums and keyboards.

Cruising for Christmas - festive spirit rolls on The ninth annual Tauranga Toy Run raised more than $2000 for the Child Cancer Foundation and Waipuna Hospice on Wednesday night.

At 6.30pm Chevies, Caddies, muscle cars and hot rods took to the streets for a charity cruise through Papamoa, downtown Mount Maunganui and Bridge Marina, ending up at the Fraser Cove shopping centre.

Tauranga car enthusiasts Sarah Ellis and Jill de Buisson started the event nine years ago with the help of their husbands.

“Every year it just keeps growing, with the fantastic support we’re getting,” says Sarah.

Despite the MetService issuing a heavy rain warning for the Bay of Plenty, Jill says she is happy people still attended the event.

“They all risked it. The numbers were down but the money was up.”

Owners of hot rods, muscles cars, classic and vintage cars donated money or toys to enter before participating in the charity cruise.

Jill says about $2500 was raised although she hasn’t yet finished counting the donations.

Psa assistance triggered The financial impacts of the kiwifruit vine killing disease Psa-V has been recognised by the Government which declared the disease a ‘biosecurity event’ on Wednesday.

The declaration means hardest hit growers throughout the North Island will be eligible for Rural Assistance Payments.

Primary Industries Minister David Carter declared Psa a medium-scale biosecurity event under the Government’s Primary Sector Recovery Policy today, triggering further assistance for growers dealing with the impacts of the disease.

“The Government has worked closely with kiwifruit industry representatives to ensure that this declaration is timed to give maxi-

mum possible benefit to growers.

“Psa was first detected in New Zealand in November 2010 but there was a noticeable time lag before it began to affect orchard incomes.”

New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers Inc president Neil Trebilco welcomes the news saying it will help affected growers through the impact of the disaster with financial and welfare support.

NZKGI and others have been working with the Government to change the ‘adverse event’ provisions to cover not only short term natural disasters such as floods or drought, but also bio-security incursion by pests and disease.

“The reality is the full impact of Psa is only just beginning to be felt as many growers start to face their first season without all, or a large part of their orchard cash flow, as a result of having lost their vines to the disease.

“It is when the income from their last harvest stops that the financial and psychological pressure of Psa will weigh most heavily on growers and their families,” says Neil.

Under the support package the Government is funding welfare and psychological support for eligible growers and their families.

They will also be eligible to receive the Rural Assistance Payment. To be eligible, growers have to meet an income and asset test.

Declaring an adverse event means the Government will take over funding many support programmes previously paid for by the industry.

Neil says the wider public has little awareness of how serious Psa’s impact has been on the industry and how important kiwifruit is to the economy. Losses could double to $200 million next year.

Tauranga harbour perceptions study

Research on what residents think about Tauranga Harbour was recently presented to the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.

The study aimed to find out what is important to residents with regard to Tauranga Harbour, determine what actions they most want for Tauranga Harbour management and how they would prefer to receive information about the harbour.

The items rated highest in terms of both importance and satisfaction were: • the visually appealing look of the harbour and harbour foreshore • monitoring and study of the harbour’s water and natural ecosystems.

The issues most needing improvement were: • water quality • minimising contamination from discharges, such as stormwater and sewage • minimising sedimentation entering the harbour • minimising the effects of industrial, orcharding and farming activities on the harbour.

The most frequently stated reasons for perceptions of declining water quality were: • pollution, runoff and effluent (45 per cent) • sea lettuce and mangroves (25 per cent) • the grounding of the MV Rena (21 per cent).

The most desired actions for ongoing management of Tauranga Harbour were: • sustainability of the natural eco-

system, including management of the water • quality, cleanliness, natural habitats, plants, wildlife, fish and shellfish • management of sea lettuce, mangroves, black swans and silt • management of discharge into the harbour, including management of sewage, effluent, farm runoff and pollution.

More than one third of respondents felt they didn’t have enough information to make decisions and would like access to more information about the state of the harbour. As a result, council will be enhancing its communication of Tauranga Harbour issues and actions.

Seven-year-old writes book about battles with illness The book written by a seven-year-old Papamoa girl about her battle with numerous health issues is being released in Tauranga on Sunday.

Zahnee Riley-Campbell - who lives with Asperger’s Syndrome, a haemangioma tumour, and Phaces Syndrome - has written a children’s book about her experiences.

Her book, entitled Zahnee’s Story, was written as part of a special project supported by Project KPH - a youth-focused charity assisting young people living with terminal illness, disease and disabilities.

In July last year Zahnee was taught to ride horses by Project KPH and this is a main narrative in her book.

Charity founder Leah Evans says after four months of weekly lessons Zahnee won five ribbons for her efforts at a ribbon day show held at Papamoa/ Mount Pony Club.

“Zahnee developed a lot of self-confidence during her project. It wasn’t easy

for Zahnee to learn to ride. There were many very tough moments. She had to work through a lot of anxiety and fear, and employ a whole lot of courage to trust in the process.

“When your sense of balance is so impaired, controlling a couple of hundred kilos with a mind of its own (a horse) isn’t easy by any stretch. She did an amazing job.”

Zahnee’s mum Jade Riley says her daughter is excited to launch her book in Tauranga.

“Zahnee has been so lucky to have had the opportunity that she’s had, it has all been such positive development in her life.”

Harmony singing bridges generation gap as ire ylinder SERVICES

Barbershops doubled as community centres in the United States in the last half of the 19th Century, where African American would socialise and harmonise while waiting their turn.

Later, minstrel singers adopted the style, resulting in popular recordings in the early days of the recording industry.

About 100 years later and a world away, Bay of Plenty group ‘Harmony A’ Plenty’ are helping in a growing movement to change the perception of the singing style from traditional to contemporary.

Group spokesman Bill Butterfield says the younger generation has an increasing interest in the barbershop style.

Harmony A’ Plenty are a new breed.

Music director Gordon Brown noted as much on a trip to last year’s Australian convention, where more than 50 per cent of several choruses comprised more than 50 per cent of young people, says Bill.

‘Harmony A’ Plenty’ has recently welcomed six young men into their chorus, ranging in age from 14-23.

Their influence has spurred the chorus to extend its repertoire to include modern items which complement the barbershop style.

New Zealand’s own ‘Musical Island Boys’ quartet, based in Wellington, has won silver medals in 2011 and 2012 in the World and International Open Quartet Competitions; the first time a group from outside Europe or USA have achieved so much.

‘Harmony A’ Plenty’ runs tuition and rehearsals at Bethlehem Community Church Hall on Mondays at 7pm.

Changes aimed at cost-effectiveness Last week the Government made changes to the law that sets out how local government works.

The intention is basically to ensure all councils work in ways that are cost-effective for households and businesses.

I fully support local councils acting responsibly, looking at the cost-effectiveness of their decisions, and acting in the best interests of their ratepayers – that’s what drives good councillors to stand for election.

In the 12 years that I have been chairman, this new legislation is perhaps the most significant as to how councils, and amalgamations of councils, may operate into the future, and has generally been below the publics’ ‘radar’ of what is planned by Central Government.

As chairman I’ve always been very conscious of the need to act prudently when we set regional council rates,

and deliver services at prudent cost.

We already partner with the region’s district and city councils and central government in a variety of projects and initiatives, including making considerable savings through shared purchasing and procurement (BOPLASS). For some time now we’ve been asking management and staff to look closely at all parts of their operations to ensure they’re efficient and effective in what they do.

As a result we’re well set up to respond positively to the amendments.

In our current annual planning process we’re taking a long, hard look at what the amendments will mean to our proposed work programme and how we should pay for it.

In future columns I’ll let you know how you can have your say and then I’ll report back as decisions are made.

Fishing information from around the traps is as follows: Contiki Fishing: Off Papamoa continues to produce above average snapper and kahawai. With both squid and bonito bait fishing well, just remember if using softer baits tie them on with bait cotton.

Harbour Fishing: With bait fish been spotted both morning and night in Omokoroa Harbour, this is a great sign for harbour fishing. Stray lining the edge of most channels, with fresh bait

and a solid burley trail is bringing up some good pan-sized snapper. Puhoi is reported to be producing some good sized trevally well over the 50cm mark. These fish provide a excellent fight on light gear, however you must remember they have extremely soft mouths and you must use a landing net when boating them, as the hook will pull straight through their mouth. The larger trevally can be eaten most ways, but ideally should be smoked.

Reef Fishing: Tarakihi spots both off Mount Maunganui and middle ground off Papamoa continue to provide a good feed of tarakihi when they’re on the bite.

Warning over whooping cough outbreak Bay of Plenty parents are being asked to ensure their babies are immunised on time as a whooping cough outbreak continues throughout the country.

An outbreak of whooping cough started in the South Island last year and has spread across New Zealand during 2012.

Toi Te Ora – Public Health Service has been notified of 243 people with whooping cough in the Bay of Plenty and Lakes districts since the start of this year, with 14 people requiring hospitalisation.

Whooping cough is highly infectious and is caused by bacteria that are spread through the community by coughing and sneezing in the same way as colds and influenza, says medical officer of health Dr Phil Shoemack.

Symptoms start with a runny nose and dry cough. Coughing gets worse over the next few weeks, developing into attacks of coughing which sometimes

end in vomiting or with breathlessness.

The ‘whoop’ sound sometimes occurs especially as a baby draws a breath after a long coughing attack.

He says babies under one year old are most at risk of serious complications from the illness.

“Whooping cough is a preventable disease.

“Immunisation for whooping cough is part of the routine childhood immunisation programme and we strongly recommend parents get their babies immunised on time.”

Whooping cough immunisations are given when a baby is six weeks, three months and five-months-old, and boosters are given to children at four and 11 years of age.

What causes lymphatic congestion?

In our last article we spoke of how the lymphatic system is the transportation highway for the immune and repair functions of the body.

When the lymphatic system becomes sluggish, fluid can concentrate in specific areas (swelling/fluid retention) or an impaired function along the entire lymph system can result (congestion). When congestion is long-lasting, blockages can form which causes a backup in the flow of the lymphatic system, which often can present as gaining extra fluid in the body. This congestion can also mean cellular waste cannot effectively be released from the body and inhibit the immune system’s function.

Some of the causes of lymphatic congestion are:

• Inactivity – unlike blood, whose circulation is driven by the pumping of the heart, lymph relies on muscular movement to pump it around the body.

• Prolonged stress – this creates inflammation which in turn depresses the immune system.

• Injuries and surgeries – scar tissue and adhesions obstruct lymph flow.

• Lack of deep breathing – the act of breathing assists with the movement of lymph that is situated in the chest/breast area. If the lymph is not moving, it can cause a number of issues to the breast tissue.

So to keep the lymphatic system functioning optimally, we suggest regular consistent exercise, deep breathing and taking some time out to reduce the effects of stress on the body.

Contrasting fortunes on mission trip

Tauranga woman Kaye Hurn sobbed and sobbed on her return home from an eight-day humanitarian trip to the Philippines.

The white walls of her secluded home, replete with porcelain beside a quiet estuary, proved too much of a contrast to the conditions she witnessed while hosted by the Ruel Foundation, which provides surgical procedures, an orphanage and a malnourished centre for Filipino children in need.

“Words cannot explain nor express the experiences of going to the Philippines and helping out at the Ruel Foundation for a week,” says Kaye.

“How does one describe the emotion when viewing and holding a five-week-old baby from the

Munyan tribe who live up in the mountains in the city of Calapan on the island of Mindoro? This little fellow’s mother died in childbirth and the baby hadn’t been fed and was near death’s door. Anton was taken to hospital, and then was transferred to Ruel until he gained weight and was feeding well.

“We are very strict on setting a high standard of skills. We have a great relationship with the local industry and our graduates are really well received.”

Regional council finances continue to look out of control In 2004 your regional council spent $32.6m in operating expenditure.

This rose to $47.3m in 2005, at which time Bill Bayfield was appointed CEO, with a clear mandate to restructure the organisation, and make substantive efficiency gains (i.e. to cut costs).

Bay of Plenty Regional Council, through its Finance Committee Meeting Report this week,

is expecting the 2012-13 operating expenses to come in at $94m (a 99 per cent increase in operating costs, or 12.4 per cent increase every year). Staff costs alone are now over $40m, and when you add the consultancy costs equate to the entire operating spend of 2005. When compared to 2004 (when operating expenditure was just $32.6m) the increase looks even more bleak (an increase of 188 per cent, or 21 per cent annually).

So much for turning our regional council from “good to great.”

To be fair, the council has stepped up, with a huge commitment to both public transport and the clean-up of the Rotorua Lakes.

Fortuitously the Port of Tauranga dividends that the regional council receives (via its CCO - Quayside Holdings Limited) have risen from $14m in 2005 to $24m this year; which has softened the pain for ratepayers.

Charity becoming less reliant on fundraising A total of 14 community groups have now set up their own endowment fund with the Acorn Foundation – a local charitable trust providing support to the Western Bay of Plenty.

YMCA Tauranga is one of these groups and CEO Ric Balfour says the Acorn Foundation’s support is great.

“In the long term, if we can build up enough people choosing our endowment fund, we will one day be able to use dividends for funding community projects or covering operating costs.”

Acorn operations manager Margot McCool says endowment is the key to self-determination for groups like the YMCA.

“An endowment fund will generate cash every year for that group to use where their need is greatest, without having to apply to us or compete with other charities.

“Supporters can donate directly to the endowment fund of their choice at any time, either in their will or by giving during their lifetime.”

Since starting in 2003, Acorn has distributed more than $1.5million to the local community and this year gave more than $373,000 in community grants.

Margot says the community endowment funds are one of the most important ways Acorn and the community can help local charities and community groups gain financial independence.

“Generally speaking they are very reliant on donations, fundraisers and grants to make ends meet each

Powering ahead with awards Mount Maunganui solar energy business PowerSmart has added to its trophy cabinet with another three business awards for its work installing sustainable power systems in the past week.

The company won both the Community and Overall Small Business award categories at last week’s New Zealand Sustainable

60 Awards, only days after winning Sustainable Electricity Association New Zealand’s award for ‘Best Solar PV Implementation Off-Shore’ for its Tokelau project.

PowerSmart managing director Mike BassettSmith thanked the judges for recognising the team’s efforts, saying he was “tremendously proud of our team” and believed it was the beginning of more success to come for the company.

In October the company completed the $7.5 million Tokelau Renewable Energy Project, installing solar systems on the Pacific Island’s three atolls to make it the world’s first fully solar-powered nation.

The latest awards come only two months after PowerSmart won the Clean-tech and Sustainability section of the NZ Innovators Awards.

Tauranga Hospital’s children’s ward will be a merrier place this Christmas thanks to the donation from Tauranga Freemasons to buy children’s toys.

“What we have done a lot this year is the knitting for premature babies and that was a national thing done by our grandmaster’s wife.

“So far we have contributed around 6000 outfits, which is an awful lot of knitting, but we have some healthy knitters in the Bay of Plenty.”

Mike says they have also been involved in helping the hospital out with gifts for children at Christmas.

“The children’s ward benefited two years ago and this year is the first time giving Christmas gifts for the babies ward.

“They do the wards up lovely for the children over Christmas, so we will probably help them wrap the presents and head along to the Christmas party.”

Suitable toys

Children’s ward play specialist Debbie McDougall says the group looked for a range of toys to suit ages from birth right through to 16 years of age.

“Things that will suit girls and boys, we do find that they like different toys.

Just a wide range of toys they can take home.

“For the first time we don’t have to focus on the toys that have to be sterilised and wiped down like the ones we do use in the hospital.”

She says some of the toys will be given to children at their Christmas party on December 21 and the rest will be handed out over Christmas.

“It’s fantastic. Every year I say come November what are we going to do and then every Christmas someone pops up and donates.”

Debbie says most of the children will go home over Christmas if they can, but there are some children who will have to stay in hospital.

“So we have to try and make it really special for them.

“Christmas day, I guess the children are feeling a little bit apprehensive and sad over and above just having to be in hospital, but the ward certainly tries to make it bright and festive.”

An orphans’ christmas for everyone: chance to give to help With Christmas looming Tauranga residents looking for affordable gifts are being encouraged to visit the Orphans Aid International Opshop in Tauranga.

At the new store on Willow Street, people can find great presents and give back to the community at the same time.

“There has been so much support for our new shops in Tauranga and Hastings.”

Every dollar raised from the store is quickly put to work. Each month, Orphans Aid International sends more than $20,000 to its projects in Romania, Russia and India.

“Our fundraising stores have been such a success,” she says.

orphaned children.

Sue started Orphans Aid International in 2004, after visiting Romania and seeing for herself the conditions orphaned children are growing up in.

“There are more than 150 million children right now living without parental care.”

A colourful season Christmas has come early to Piccadilly Arcade.

The walkway between Devonport Road and Grey Street which contains 21 shops, is getting into the festive spirit with a colouring in competition for the city’s smallest shoppers. It’s just one of a number of initiatives underway to add that little bit of extra colour to the arcade during the coming weeks, says spokesperson Alec Were.

“We’ve got the Christmas lights up in the cafeteria if people want to see those, all the stores have been decorated through the arcade, and we’ve got Santa’s mail box for children to post their letters in the centre of the arcade near the Christmas tree.”

Santa will make a special appearance on Wednesday to hand out spot prizes and congratulate the colouring in competition winner, and there’s even a chance that carol singers promoted by Mainstreet Tauranga will pop in to sing a few tunes. Tauranga Gliding Club has been providing trial flights for thousands of people, aged five to 95 years old, for more than 50 years.

“What I am trying to do is get books into low decile areas where children may not be using their local library service.”

According to recent research, children lose up to six months in reading age during the school holiday period.

“Reading six books over the holidays can really make a difference to children’s reading.”

Kerri is currently looking for donations of unwanted books in a moderate condition for the lending service. A

range of books are needed from junior level up to Year 8.

“The public library does a brilliant senior reading programme but some families don’t use the library. There are a lot of transient families - people move, the books don’t go with them.”

Young page-turners Places on Tauranga Library’s annual summer holiday programmes are fast filling up.

Over the summer break, two programmes to encourage young readers to keep up the habit will be run. The summer reading programmes for five – 10-year-olds aim to help primary students maintain their reading level over the break. The Tweens/Teens Means Reads programme aims to broaden the reading interest of those aged 11-18. Programme participants can earn rewards for their reading. Registrations can be made for the programmes at any library.

Celebrating motoring success

Excellence in Tauranga’s automotive trade was recognised last week at the annual MTA regional awards, with the top award going to Pacific Toyota – which won the large business and supreme awards.

Break Out today

Pacific Toyota general manager Mark Mills says it was a complete surprise to receive the awards, but thought it was a reflection of the strong growth the company had experienced during the past year that should see sales for the three-site group reach $40 million this year.

Along with opening its new service centre in Bayfair last year, to add to Tauranga and Whakatane operations, it had created eight new staff roles.

The other business to take out two awards was Farmer Motor Group, which won two awards for members of its service team, including apprentice of the year Ethan Gunn and workshop supervisor of the year Darren Peattie.

Service manager Bevan Shepherd says he would like to think the two awards were a sign of the training and standards at the company.

“I have to say they are both very deserving. They are hard workers and both have a passion for their work, so it’s great to see them get it.”

Ethan, 20, who is in the second year of his mechanic apprenticeship, says the award was a surprise and will

Workshop controller Darren Peattie, who oversees a team of 19 in the workshop, was also shocked by the award, which follows a series of earlier achievements including being the national VW Master Technician of the Year in 2011.

Event coordinator and Tauranga MTA branch committee member Lisa Robertson says the event on Saturday December 1 was a huge success, attracting almost 200 people.

Cutting rural highway accidents A 10 per cent drop in deaths on rural state highways in Bay of Plenty and Waikato has been put down to a pro-active roadsafety management programme - with hopes for further drops.

A report into the success of the KiwiRAP programme introduced in 2006 shows it has helped save hundreds of lives nationwide.

Associate Transport Minister and

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges credited the programme with helping cut fatal and serious accidents on the high risk roads by 30 per cent, along with a 15 per cent reduction on the national network overall.

“KiwiRAP is proving to be a very effective tool to help identify the level of risk on these roads so that engineering, investment and enforcement efforts can be better targeted to the risk each road poses.”

Photo by Elaine Fisher. ship between the NZ Transport Agency, the Automobile Association, the Ministry of Transport, the police and ACC - uses historical traffic and crash data to produce colour coded maps showing the relative level of collective and personal risk on sections of the state highway network. Safety improvement projects have been focused on roads with high collective risk - generally roads with high vehicle and crash numbers.

Regional Waikato/BOP director for the New Zealand Transport Agency Harry Wilson says fatal and serious crashes across the region have dropped by 114 in the four year period - a reduction of 10 per cent. While good progress has been made in improving the region’s high risk roads, there is still more work to do.

“There are safety improvement projects already underway in both the Waikato and the Bay of Plenty with more planned in the next three years,” says Harry.

The report shows the Western Bay has some of the nation’s higher risk highways – including high collective risk rated State Highway 2 from Te Maunga to Paengaroa (ranked fourth highest nationally), SH29 from the Kaimais to Tauranga (ranked seventh) and SH 2 from Katikati to Tauranga (ranked 14th).

The stretch from Katikati to Tauranga claimed five lives and 27 serious injuries in the four years to 2011, and has been targeted for work around a blackspot near Pahoia School.

NZTA’s Bay of Plenty state highways manager Brett Gliddon

says the Pahoia and Esdaile Road intersection upgrade will improve road safety for all road users and reduce the risk to drivers when turning on and off SH2.

NZTA senior communications advisor Glenda Dobbyn says work is underway to cut the accidents near the school by improving the sight path for traffic from Paihoa Road turning left on to the highway before a sharp right turn into Esdaile Road. A turning bay will also be installed to reduce accident risk.

A garden full of Christmas vege I say it every year, but I can’t believe that we are almost up to Christmas, and as usual I have lots to do in the garden before the big day.

The one thing that I am charged with every year is to grow the peas, potatoes and salad crops – especially for Christmas Day. This year, because I have taken half the vegetable garden up with strawberries (from which I am getting the most incredible sized fruits this year), I am growing the potatoes in tubs, which I am very relieved to say are looking very good for harvesting just before Christmas.

I have planted two tubs of Jersey Bennie, one for Christmas Day and one for after, and another two tubs of Agria for later on but I will call that it for the season

as later crops are likely to suffer attacks of the potato and tomato psyllid as the summer rolls on.

The main job to get done is to smarten

up the garden for the festive period, fill gaps by planting some fresh colour in the garden, and a final weed around. Only when the place looks good can I sit around and enjoy.

I also have to get the one plant that I purchase every year, my Christmas favourite, the Poinsettia.

With its bright red bracts, this plant has become a symbol of Christmas worldwide.

It is easy to care for as long as they are kept out of draughts and not over-watered.

They derive from Mexico, where they grow in the wild and survive in very dry conditions. In the northern hemisphere they colour up naturally with short days in the winter; here in our summer they have to be shaded during part of the day to shorten the time of daylight that they receive to get them to colour up.

Don’t leave it to late to get yours for Christmas, or you may be disappointed, there are some very good quality plants available now at Palmers.

Kissing a flower with light I’m not a super enthusiastic gardener but when I see a beautiful flower I find it difficult not to pull out my camera.

The best way to photograph flowers is with a macro lens which enables you to get very close and focus down to one to one. I sprayed a little fresh water on this flower and then used the

‘kiss it with light’ technique from a low powered flash to put nice detail in. A small aperture like F22 gives good depth of field but still throws the background out of focus.

Make a scarecrow this summer and win Creating a scarecrow for the Bethlehem Town Centre’s Vintage Fair in February could be a great summer holiday project says David Hamilton, centre manager for Bethlehem Town Centre.

“All those who enter will be in to win mystery prizes from the Bethlehem Town Centre and the scarecrow competition, which is part of the Bay’s Biggest Pumpkin contest, will be judged at the fair on February 23 and 24, next year.”

David says the pumpkin and scarecrow contests will be colourful additions to the Vintage Fair, adding to the fun and entertainment of the day. The two contests are sponsored by Bethlehem Town Centre, Kings Seeds, Media Works and SunMedia.

“Not everyone has the room to grow a giant pumpkin, so we decided to hold a scarecrow contest as well and we’re looking forward to seeing how clever people can be in creating scarecrows,” says David.

The categories for the scarecrow contest are: Best Scarecrow – Adult; Best Design and Finish; Best Scarecrow – Child, and Best Effort and Imagination.

The giant pumpkin growing contest was launched in October and by now entrants should have sturdy young plants grown from the seeds each were provided. By February next year those plants should have produced very large pumpkins.

Gerard Martin says growing pumpkins isn’t as easy as some people think.

“I’m looking forward to seeing if the Bay can produce pumpkins as big as those grown in America, where some have reached more than 800 kilograms.”

However, growing giant pumpkins isn’t that easy and Gerard Martin of Kings Seeds says to achieve truly ‘ginormous’ results, the plants needs careful attention.

“Predictions are that it’s going to be a hot dry summer so watering is important. Even now soil moisture levels are very low. Watering the soil, not the foliage, in the morning is best.

“Once pumpkin form on the vine, they can put on up to five kilograms in weight a day if watered well through summer,” says Gerard.

The plants can be fed with soluble fertiliser like seaweed, fish fertiliser or worm tea. They shouldn’t suffer from pest or disease but can be damaged by wind, so some protection might be needed if the patch is exposed. As the vines grow, Gerard says they can be gently trained in the direction the gardener wants.

Hundreds of giant pumpkin seeds were sent out in October to people keen to take the title for the biggest pumpkin and share in $1500 worth of prizes.

Something smells a bit funny here At Wastewater Management Review committee, members (four elected and four iwi) received the bi-annual community survey report.

This committee was created by a requirement of the 35 year resource consent issued by the Regional Council for wastewater discharge. The community survey report is also a requirement

of the consent. Another requirement was collection of $250,000 from wastewater users (you) for mitigation of effects of wastewater actual or potential. I’ve written before about this consent and its conditions. Some of it is emperor’s clothes stuff. A community survey on odours seems nonsense.

If it smells people ring up or write in.

A survey (costly) asking people if they can smell anything reeks of bureaucratic nonsense. It’s true that councils

must discharge only high quality treated wastewater and it’s also true that it keeps on coming and there isn’t any practical option for the discharge to the ocean after treatment. Other considerations are decommissioning the sludge ponds and conversion of oxidation ponds to more wetlands. But in existing wetlands wildlife further contaminates treated wastewater. Intention is to go back to Regional Council seeking some adjustments to the consent. Good luck!

CEO selection contines

Elected members are continuing the CEO appointment process. Like a lot of PC blah these days the process is seemingly more important than the outcome. We received applications from a wide range of people. Elected members pruned these to a short list and we interviewed this week. From this a short, short list was produced from which a new CEO will most likely be appointed. It will be an interesting time for the successful applicant as by the time the position is taken up, the organisational review and CCO review will be well under way, probably irrevocable. But in the circumstances there didn’t appear to be an option. Elected members had unanimously been pushing for the reviews since this term began. It is the sole domain of the chief executive to implement this. Elected members’ input is to direct the CEO and monitor the outcome. So the new appointee will largely inherit an organisation not of their making – but an amalgam of consultants, and two CEO’s views. An announcement of the new CEO is likely before Christmas.

Tailoring council to fit

The existing council organisation structure was tailored of the past, not tailored for the future it is said.

That’s true. My preference is to tailor it for today, and adjust it as we go along. This way it remains under some sort of financial control. Council rate funded debt is $216.1 million at October 31 and total net debt was $380.4m. We’re at the debt limit so there’s no room to move financially even if there was the inclination to do so. In 2005 there were 1267 new dwelling permits issued. This dropped to 450 by 2009. This year there have been 670 to November 30 so we’re not out of the woods yet in regard to collection of development contributions which the city was relying on to fund new infrastructure debt.

Golf club car park shelved

On other matters, a proposal to enlarge the car park at the Otumoetai Golf Club has been shelved until 2014/15. This is a council reserve and stormwater ponding area that the golf club makes good use of when it’s not raining. The outcome of the declined planning application for a supermarket across the road where the Trust Hotel is has not yet run its

course, in my opinion. Any appeal will take time and if it were to succeed then it would likely affect the golf club parking situation.

No money for Bayfair loos

Bayfair Reserve toilet facility funding also was declined - $125,000 was the cost plus $8600 annual operational cost. And the old saying was “to spend a penny”? Not these days. Coastal structures – you and I know them as sea walls – are crumbling away and need maintenance. If it’s not done the cost compounds exponentially. Total is 61 walls/ structures at a cost of $4,214,272. Oh joy! It was decided to return to the original 10 year plan which got reduced a year or two ago and spend around $300,000 a year (and hope for good weather).

Community funding sought

A proposal from the Merivale Community Centre for the council to introduce a targeted rate to increase their funding for community services is to go out for community consultation and feedback.

This is for “social” programmes. Good luck with this one – the community centre does good work but I can figure the likely result right now. From where I sit these sorts of services funding more rightly sits with Central Government.

The Nightshelter for the so-called homeless is still meandering along. Council has allocated $118,000 from the Stewarts and Carruthers Trust which it administers to help the Tauranga Moana Nightshelter Trust get off the ground. Ratepayers involvement is not on the horizon but council may make some non-strategic land available if there is a suitable unused site.

No-can-do attitude surfaces

In the confidential section of the meeting Community Share Agreements for the provision of community facilities in conjunction with the Ministry of Education was discussed. Those are usually joint use of school halls. It was in confidential because the Ministry had yet to hear our views on existing arrangements and possible future ones. In a changing world we need to keep up with events, make sure that needs are being met, and arrangements and obligations are still relevant. I’ve had a number of constituency issues to deal with lately. Most revolve around planning and consent issues – or rather non-issue of said consent. It is disappointing to note a no-can-do attitude and a bureaucratic approach from council. I thought we had got through all that. These keep on cropping up and my concern is that the concerns that are put to elected members are only the tip of the iceberg. This is costing everyone – sometimes unnecessarily.

Snowball’s chances looking up Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre staff are continuing the centre’s mission to control the wild and unwanted cat populations in the Western Bay of Plenty.

Snowball – the latest in a line of unwanted cats to be profiled in The Weekend Sun – was deserted when his owner moved house.

ARRC Wildlife Trust co-ordinator Sue Mackey says the situation is typical of many owners who fail to take the time to responsibly rehome or take their pets with them when they move.

“Owning a pet is a great responsibility, not to be taken lightly. They need to be looked after for their lifetime with good care, and should never be left to fend for themselves.”

Sue says some kind people saw Snowball was no longer being cared for and brought him in to ARRC.

Animal shelter full to brim Big cats, small cats, black cats, white cats – whatever kind of cat, Mana Rescue has them all.

Mana Rescue, an unregistered charity run by three Tauranga women, is overflowing with kittens and cats in desperate need of homes this Christmas.

Operating in the garage of manager Fiona Montgomery, approximately 14 cats and 20 kittens are up for adoption from the charity – as well as a number of dogs. Each cat and kitten has been desexed and costs $60 to adopt.

Fiona says the women don’t receive any funding and run solely from food donations and money

out of their own pockets. The kittens are rescued or brought in by members of the public, but Fiona says it has got to the point where they need to turn animals away because they are so full. Phone Fiona on 0221 079 958 or visit the Mana Rescue Facebook page for more information.

Dogs at the wheel to drive adoptions Are these people completely crazy? I know some of us canines are clever, but driving a car?

Who in their right mind would let the mutt loose with the family wagon? Well apparently it’s going to happen next week, on national TV. On December 10, a Beardie Cross from SPCA – is set to make the ambitious attempt to drive a car, live on New Zealand television.

Mini wanted to help SPCA change some common misconceptions about rescue dogs so they decided, with the help of animal trainer Mark Vette and team, to teach three SPCA dogs to drive a Mini Countryman to showcase just how intelligent rescue dogs are.

The training has taken place over eight weeks with the dogs set to do their official test drive on Campbell Live.

“Driving a car actively demonstrates to potential rescue dog adopters that you can teach old dogs new tricks. The dogs have achieved amazing things in eight short weeks of training, which really shows with the right environment just how much potential all dogs from the SPCA have as family pets,” says Christine Kalin, SPCA Auckland CEO. The project began just two months ago when three rescue dogs; Monty, Porter and Ginny were selected. They were rehoused and began the doggy

driver training process. “This is a fun campaign but we hope it will seriously encourage people to consider SPCA dogs for pets, we want this campaign to raise SPCA awareness and drive adoptions. The Mini Countryman has been modified to suit operation by paws and will be reverted and available for sale after the campaign.”

“Ultimately the aim is that an SPCA rescue dog will become

“We’ve seen many people rewarded by the gratefulness of an SPCA rescue dog after adoption and we hope all New Zealanders consider the SPCA as an adoption option.”

But while people might like to give someone a pet this Christmas, it is not advisable, says Tauranga SPCA operations manager Margaret Rawiri.

“The recipient may not always want them, and it is SPCA policy to ensure any of our animals that are adopted go to loving, forever homes where they are a perfect match to the

adoptee family and we are sure they will be loved and cherished.

“Giving pets as presents can go very wrong. If you do wish to give someone a pet for Christmas and they are agreeable, have them come in and meet the animal first. The new pet won’t be a surprise but it will be a forever pet,” Margaret says.

Another great idea is a pre-paid adoption voucher, which can be bought for the cost of an adoption; then the recipient can choose an animal when ready.

Margaret says adult cats and puppies are quite slow to be adopted at the moment.

“We have lots of puppies looking for homes, and kittens.”

All animals available for adoption have been desexed, micro-chipped and registered on the NZ Companion Animal Register. They are vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms

Top tips for treating pets perfectly As most animal lovers will know, pet dogs and cats become part of the family. They should always be treated accordingly. The following tips may help if you’re struggling with pets heading into the holiday season.

Dogs

Your dog will appreciate a sheltered bed somewhere near the centre of family life. If the dog is to be left outside ensure it has access to suitable shelter.

Most adult dogs thrive on commercially prepared foods, but feeding instructions must be followed. A stew of cooked meat with added rice and vegetables is nourishing and economical. All dogs need access to grass, which they sometimes eat to maintain their natural digestive balance.

Fresh water must always be available. Never feed your dog raw sheep meat, raw offal of any kind, or chicken, chop, fish and rabbit bones.

Avoid cooked bones and limit the dog to brisket and big raw beef shank varieties.

Be a responsible dog owner and have your dog

desexed as soon as it is old enough – at around six months of age. You will improve its health, minimise aggressive behavior and the tendency to roam. Exercise is a highlight of your dog’s life.

Suitable daily exercise for its size and breed is essential for its physical and mental well-being.

Cats and kittens

Cats are probably the most universal domestic pets in New Zealand, but are often neglected.

While cats are fairly independent creatures and don’t need to be exercised, they still need their basic needs met. Suitable food and fresh water must be provided.

Kittens can be vaccinated as early as six weeks of age and receive subsequent vaccinations until they are 12-16 weeks old.

Your cat’s annual booster injection is also a good time for it to have a general check-up.

The classroom theory of aerodynamics was put to test by a group of Aquinas College Year 9 technology students this week when they flew gas-powered gliders they had made.

Aquinas College technology teacher Peter Nicholson says the students loved the project, but there had been a few casualties with the balsa wood designed planes.

“It certainly helps bring technology to life for the kids.

Concepts like lift and drag can be pretty hard to pick up in the classroom, so it’s

been a great way to put it into practice.”

Most pupils used the plane model designs supplied, but Tyler Cherrie and Catherine Berry modified the unit to add a new wing and support struts they designed and created themselves using a 3D printer.

Quick and tasty summer sustenance At this time of year when everything gets a bit chaotic and time is short, a quick tasty meal without too much fuss is often the way to go.

Out in the garden lurking under a canopy of prickly green leaves I discover a handful of zucchini flowers attached to small green zucchini.

The decision is made to end their short life in a sacrificial flavouring

exercise. With this particular vegetable, as most gardeners know, a forgotten zucchini quickly becomes a marrow so it makes sense to harvest some a few days old. Small courgette tastes nutty when sliced raw into salads, but for this week’s dish I am going to use pan fried with asparagus and bacon to flavour a quick tasty bulgur wheat risotto that fills you up and sustains your energy for another round of Christmas shopping.

Bulgur wheat is most commonly found in

tabouleh, however the flavour blends well with lots of foods, and can be used like rice - in fact the fine bulgur wheat is quicker to cook. This is because bulgur wheat is cracked whole wheat that is partially pre-cooked. I know I’m going to upset all the vegetarians out there by adding bacon to this great asparagus and zucchini duo, but they can leave it out and add eggplant and onions instead.

However, the secret to the whole dish is the background flavour of bacon, egg, parmesan, freshly cracked pepper - this carbonara flavour goes with both the vegetables and the cooked bulgur.

Carbonara bulgur risotto MOTOR INN

Ingredients 4 rashers bacon, sliced 2-3 zucchini, sliced 7-8 asparagus, sliced ¾ cup fine bulgur wheat 2-3 leaves of mint, chopped 2-3 sprigs of parsley, chopped 2-3 small leaves coriander, chopped sea salt/freshly cracked pepper 25-35g knob of butter 2 free range eggs beaten with ½ cup cream and 2 Tbsp grated Parmesan.

Method In a heavy hot skillet, sear off the bacon.

When the bacon is crispy, add the zucchini and the asparagus stirring well, season with sea salt, lots of cracked pepper, stir in the bulgur and one and a quarter cups of water a bit at a time.

Cover and reduce heat. Stir to prevent from sticking, cook for about 3-5 minutes or until just before all the water has evaporated. Add the chopped herbs and beaten eggs, cream and Parmesan mix. Stir through the risotto then add a knob of butter and allow to settle for a just a moment. Add more cracked pepper and you’re ready to serve.

Not happy paying extra Maori costs

I am not happy as a ratepayer to pay $60,000 yearly, in addition to my taxpayer contributions for everything Maori - and this in addition to the Constitution Amendments the Maori Council has in store for governance of this country. Iwi and hapu have entrenched Resource Management Act control - much of which is final and can’t be appealed. This is just another road in for Maori to control Council as it controls Government. Co-governance is not an issue. We are not two nations and should not subscribe to the notion that 14% of New Zealanders can tell us that we are not one people. It would appear the Regional Council has been funding iwi $50-$70,000 each year since the 1990s to consult. .Now TCC has been conned into consultation fees of $60,000. When is enough enough. Soon Tauranga City Council will be paying Maori a salary to sit in an advisory capacity as a separate issue.

Some Councils have refused to do this saying Maori representation can be voted in democratically.

The Council has been told by the Office of the Treaty of Waitangi that there will be co- governance and co- management agreements put in place coming out of Treaty settlement. At the very least we should not be paying fees to do this but mostly it should not be happening at all.

Government sets aside $62.million consultation expenses annually to pay Maori for the Treaty claim process and tell us how much our next payment and apology will cost. When will it stop?

A question of privileges In The Weekend Sun November 9 Peter Dey wrote: “Most so called privileges are not privileges at all but measures against discrimination.”

On the same page we had a letter from Wendy Galloway telling how her son had come home from school being upset he had Maori blood.

She wrote: “Reason being all those with Maori blood were asked to go to a special assembly where information on scholarships, grants, etc were offered to Maori students. He went to race relations and said this was racial but of course was ignored.”

Later in the same letter at Auckland Medical University he again learnt that he was required to treat Maori patients differently to anyone else.

But the fascinating bit of this letter was the last sentence in the first paragraph. “Amazingly not many Maori took up the grants or scholarships.” I await Peter Dey’s reply to the above in eager anticipation.

In Kaipara rates bills this year are a hot topic in every sense, recently reports show the scale of the problems unfolding at Kaipara, spiraling debt and large rate increases (some 1000% in one year) resulting from a Mangawhai Heads sewerage scheme, the estimated cost started at $34m based on continued growth that has not happened, actual cost $62m.

Kaipara is considered “tiny’ but has huge debts as a result, add to that $20m of rate refunds due and the debt will be $100m, end result: Commissioners appointed and likely bankrupt.

Meanwhile in Tauranga many things “sewerage” look the same: - Our sewerage scheme with an estimated cost in 2004 of $19m and $260m in 2011(13x bigger).

BOP Councils have paid $10+m to Smartgrowth who predicted large future growth but there’s none.

Many questioned this Council accepted idea

that eventually it wouldn’t work. Now Council have been advised that “the growth may not be there” yet the spending goes on to build the pipeline costing $260m. TCC is now “looking for growth” to justify it all?

Tauranga’s ratio of debt/ income ($460m/$168m is 274%, threshold 250%), Kaipara@232%, but then add to that another $190+m of borrowings to complete the pipeline then total debt would be $650m@390% in 3-4 years or so.

The Sewer project needs to stop now before Kaipara’s fate befalls Tauranga?

The past: Useful or useless?

Some of my ancestors were border raiders who burned down homes, killed all the men, and drove off with the women and cattle. Others were sea pirates who raided and pillaged seaside habitations. Still others were victims of such atrocities.

But I do not dwell on this history as there is no profit in that pursuit. The only thing to remember is not to let it happen again.

There are, however, some things from the past that we should remember; namely literature, poetry, music, and art. Our country is deficient in these and so we use memories from many other countries and sometimes from thousands of years in the past.

Those correspondents who are presently wallowing in the misdeeds of the past, should climb out of the muck, wash themselves off and look around them to see what good they can do for their fellow citizens and neighbours.

They should be hopeful happy helpers rather than doomsday divisive destructors.

Kiwirail is in the financial ‘dodo’ because management/government/councils are not listening to the market/shareholders/taxpayers. Kiwirail adopts the wrong ‘do’. A paradigm shift is what is needed - change from ‘kan’t do’ to ‘Kiwirail kan do’.

Richard Prince: I was saddened to read Colin Bidois’ letter. He writes of putting things in the past and moving forward in positive manner, yet he spends most of his letter fulminating about how badly Maori have been treated in the past…. Mr Bidios writes that he cannot forgive the killing of a forebear nearly 150yrs ago at the Battle of Orakau. My family forbears were pioneers in both Australia and New Zealand and experienced some terrible tragedies. I hold no grudge, it is pointless. Ian Brougham: “Our country will always be divided as long as the wrong treaty is in place, and the truth brought out that Maori are not the indigenous people of New Zealand [first to arrive here].

It is well known that the final English draft that William Hobson authorized to be translated into the Maori Language has not been used because Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer put in place a rejected false draft and had written the majority of New Zealanders out of the Treaty, and also that when Maori arrived in New Zealand it was already inhabited by a fair skinned race of people called the Celts who were our ancestors, and 4 other races were also here before Maori.

This information has been sent to all our MPs in parliament, but not one has been interested in the truth.

Our Governments have refused to allow this to be officially investigated, as any remains or artefacts believed to be pre Maori are by default given to Maori to dispose of.”

Focus on crime prevention and rehabilitation succeeding National is building a safer New Zealand, with the lowest crime rate in 30 years.

from our boys and girls in blue, to our corrections staff – for the great jobs they do every day to help us achieve these results.

We put 600 extra police on the beat, and have invested in rehabilitation and reintegration to reduce reoffending. National has also focused resources on frontline policing and crime prevention.

Targets set

Good results

One of our priorities this term is to deliver better public services, and the first results for the justice sector better public services targets have been released.

They show almost 3000 fewer violent crimes over the past year. The total reported crime rate is down almost 6 per cent, that’s 21,337 fewer crimes, and fewer victims. Youth crime is also down 4 per cent, and reconviction 7 per cent. These are results to be proud of. I want to thank everyone across the sector –

We’ve set four better public services targets to help reduce crime, and lead to 45,000 fewer victims by 2017. Our targets aim to reduce total recorded crime by 15 per cent, violent crime by 20 per cent, youth crime by 5 per cent, and reoffending by 25 per cent by 2017.

We’ve delivered on our election promise to better protect the public from serious sexual or violent offenders through the Public Safety (Public Protection Orders) Bill, which will allow the High Court to detain these offenders.

We are introducing a new restraining order to protect victims of serious violent or sexual crimes from unwanted contact with their attackers.

National has also launched a pilot Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Court in the district courts in Auckland, to help address this key driver of crime.

About 51 per cent of offences are committed “under the influence”. So dealing with addiction issues before sentencing will let offenders confront their drug and alcohol dependency, while still holding them accountable for their actions.

Rehabilitation

We believe that helping rehabilitate offenders will reduce the likelihood of reoffending, and research shows that this is the case where prisoners are employed on release.

From 2009 to 2012 the number of prisoners

in vocational training, employment and literacy and numeracy education increased from 5,359 to 7,529. This is great news that will help us meet our target to reduce reoffending.

National promised to build a safer New Zealand, and we are delivering on that promise.

Climate talks in Qatar

This week I am in Doha, Qatar for the 18th ministerial climate change conference under the UN Convention on Climate Change.

To succeed in this area we need maximum participation from countries.

In short, we need to maximise the nations on the ‘mitigation bus’ and it is for this reason that we decided as a Government to make our next commitment through the UN under what is called “the Convention Track” rather than under the Kyoto Protocol.

After all, more than 85 per cent of global emissions from countries are outside the protocol and so if we want to make a difference that’s where global action is required.

Lawrence Jones – currently a sideman with Marcy Gray and her Big Band - is one of the prime movers behind England’s respected Brighton Jazz Allstars, a group which has been playing for fifteen years in the bop/hard bop idiom.

He plays flute and various saxes and sings the occasional track.

This CD finds him in intimate form, not going so much hard bebop as modern mainstream, keeping the playing close and melodic on a set that includes originals, an opening flute take on Toots Thielemans’ “Blusette” and more familiar tunes such as “Good Life” and a beautifully subtle tenor sax take on Duke Ellington’s “All Too Soon”, reminiscent of Dexter Gordon in a mellow mood.

I’m not a huge fan of jazz flute, though Jones is certainly adept, but the sax playing is gorgeous. So is the backing. Pianist Roy Hilton is a gem, whether deftly accompanying or cutting loose on solos that are the very definition of tastefulness (not sure whether that’s a good thing or not for a jazz player!).

And the rhythm section is exemplary.

Dom O’Meeghan’s drumming has moved several leaps forward since I last heard it. He ably powers the slowest of ballads with absolute, almost invisible, precision or to explosively cut loose as he does with a stunning extended solo on the sax-driven “End of a Love Affair”.

A polished performance Baycourt’s magnificent Steinway grand piano, a brilliant young pianist and a full symphony orchestra combined to give a spectacular and polished performance of Grieg’s popular A minor Piano Concerto in Baycourt theatre last Sunday afternoon.

As an accomplished young soloist, Jason Bae is already receiving well deserved international acclaim. From powerful fortissimos, a glittering and superbly fluent technique, and coupled with a very moving Adagio, his performance was outstanding.

There is no doubt that the orchestra

was inspired by the artistry of the soloist and its response was flawless. Grieg’s music has been described as “synonymous with Norwegian temper and nature, lore, light, and landscape” and the total interpretation was magnificent.

The programme opened with Mozart’s Don Giovanni and concluded with Dvorak’s ever popular symphony ‘From the New World’.

The orchestra has a very strong audience base and its artistic achievements to date are quite remarkable. In his two concerts this year, newly appointed musical director Justus Rozemond has bought to the region two brilliant soloists and plans to continue this practice.

At the concert, he spoke briefly about plans for next year including the ever popular ‘Last Night of The Proms’, continuing the Schools’ Concerts, and developing an orchestra richly deserving of community support. Congratulations for a wonderful afternoon’s entertainment.

Great Christmas gifts at final kids market It’s all about Christmas at The Kids Market this weekend, back for the final time this year.

Some of the locally designed products on offer at The Kids Market this Sunday.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, this Sunday is the time to do so, with boutique and designer stalls bursting with beautiful, unique Christmas gifts.

Santa will also be there from 10.30-11.30am handing out treats and posing for photos. Photo company Click and Swift will be taking Polaroid photos with Santa, so parents can take home their photos on the day.

Organiser Caroline Olson says this market is all about Christmas.

“We have heaps of Christmas gift ideas from a range of amazing stalls. They make great stocking-stuffers as well.

“There’s nothing mainstream, it’s all quite lovely, lots of boutique designer stuff, but at really good prices.”

Caroline makes particular mention of Kirkies Wooden Toys, selling hand-made toys for children of all ages.

“He has amazing gifts for children.”

Children from the Mount Kids Market, a market where children operate their own stalls, will join the event this Sunday.

“It’d be nice for the kids to earn a bit of pocket money over Christmas,” says Caroline.

There will also be plenty of entertainment for children, including some of the favourites from

throughout the year, such as a bouncy castle, face painting, balloon creations, Kung Fu Panda and More FM – who will be handing out spot prizes.

With free entry, plenty of parking and another $500 hamper up for grabs, The Kids Market is the perfect family activity, from 9am-1pm at Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre.

The forgotten people of Christmas As we approach Christmas, the decorations and Christmas cards remind us of some of the characters in the Christmas Story: the wise men, the shepherds, Mary and Joseph and some angels.

But there are others that we readily overlook. Let’s look at one of them.

called Herod and in Judea there was a priest named Zechariah. He was married to Elizabeth and although they were well on in years, they had no children. Their story is in Luke Chapter 1 starting at verse 5 One time when Zechariah was on duty in the temple as priest before God, an angel of the Lord appeared to him. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.

But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth.

“Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God.” Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”

The angel answered, “I am Gabriel.

I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time.”

And true to the Angel’s word, Zechariah could not speak for the following nine months until the baby was born.

We could well ask why should this be?

The answer is, that he questioned the promises that God has made to him. All that the angel said came true. Zechariah was able to speak again when the boy was born and the son, John the Baptist, grew to be the one to announce the coming of Jesus.

And today God promises us many things and we need to accept the promises of God because they will always come true. Our god is faithful and what he says will always come to pass.

New premises for op shop The St Andrew’s Church Great Opportunity Shop has moved from Maunganui Road to a purpose-built shop attached to the church at the corner of Dee Street and Macville Road, Mount Maunganui.

The op shop was established more than 20 years ago with the vision to make good quality second-hand clothing available to the community. In addition, 10 per cent of the profits have been used to support community projects and

to support the youth pastor at St Andrew’s Church.

The shop has a constantly changing collection of clothing, shoes, accessories, household items and other goods, and a willing and friendly group of ladies who regularly volunteer their time.

To celebrate the recent move, St Andrew’s held a women’s Christmas event. Prizes were awarded for the best ‘look’ from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, as well as

the most elegant attire.

The event included a demonstration of singing Christmas carols around the piano, some creative ways to recycle T-shirts and jeans purchased from the op shop, and a delicious afternoon tea.

One of the advantages of its new location - apart from a more spacious shop - is that there is good parking right outside, which is helpful for the quick drop-off of donated goods, or for a wander around the shop.

Winter wonderland for show Christmas is coming!

And City Church Tauranga is kicking-off its Christmas season celebrations this Sunday morning at 9:30am with their annual Christmas Show.

The Christmas Show is a zany, funfilled, Christmas-themed service for both children and adults alike. Each Christmas Show is loaded with interactive games, musical items and lots and lots of prizes! According to Mark Allan, co-ordinator of this year’s show, the 2012 edition will be no different.

“It’s always a highlight of the year,” says Mark.

“People go out of their way to invite

their friends and family to this event.

We have people come from all over the city to be a part of it.”

This year’s theme is ‘A Winter Wonderland’ and Mark says they’re trying to make it ‘about as close to the North Pole as a Kiwi in New Zealand can get.”

“Yeah, we know that some people think a Kiwi Christmas should be all beaches, barbecues and jandals. We just want to let our imaginations run wild for a little bit. We are going to do everything we can to make it feel like we’re right there at Santa’s workshop.”

Mark assures Santa will be making an appearance.

“It’s going to be great time.”

The intolerance of tolerance

The world today places a lot of emphasis on what is perceived to be tolerance, which is the ability or willingness to condone or accept something - in particular the existence of opinions or behaviour that one does not necessarily agree with.

The motto of today seems to be: “the one thing I will not tolerate is intolerance.” The suggestion is that all tolerance is good and that all intolerance is bad. One of the catch-cries of the imminent One World Church will be “unity in diversity” and tied in with that is the ever-increasing call for tolerance, even of other religions.

The world’s perspective, and sadly that of some in the Church, is that Christianity ought to be as broad and as accepting as possible, even to the point of condoning or accepting that which is contrary to Scripture and contrary to God’s plan of salvation.

We are told that to suggest that faith in Jesus is the only way to salvation is too narrow and that we ought to accept those who have faith in God in ways that don’t align with Scripture. To suggest that certain behaviours are sinful and an abomination to a holy and righteous God is seen as being bigoted, narrow-minded and judgmental. Christians who make moral judgments based on Scripture are defined as “sub–Christian” or “sub–human”. Scripture says that the way is narrow that leads to eternal life and that few find it. Jesus says in John 14:6: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Paul says in Ephesians 5:11: “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.”

People take a verse out of context (Matthew 7:1) and are convinced that Christians should not judge sin, “lest ye be judged also”. When you read the rest of the conversation, Jesus is actually saying “when you judge, don’t judge hypocritically – don’t judge others by a different standard than the standard that you use for yourself.”

To state that we are not to judge others, you also have to ignore what Jesus says in John 7:24 and what Paul says consistently in the Epistles (see 1 Corinthians 5:12). God is intolerant of sin, He judges sin. God is intolerant of other gods and other religions. Let us be faithful to God and His Word, rather than submitting to the spirit of this fallen age.
