No stopping the gritty truth Here we are in a new year and it’s 2012.

Yes, that’s right, you read it in the newspaper, so it must be right.

There’s a lot to get through this year, because the world is going to end in March, according to some old, but not very good calendar makers.

So focus here, people, we’ll have to cram a year’s worth of nonsense into just a few months.

What a wet and wacky Christmas break. More rain than you could shake an umbrella at; and some weird news to wash it down.

Interesting how the news doesn’t stop just because the TV and radio people take a holiday.

In fact, there’s usually more news, but you won’t find much on television or most radio stations; in their

view, the news just ‘stops’ for a few weeks while they swan around having a break.

Not so at SunLive, where the news kept coming, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A lot of the news unfortunately was just plain horrible.

First up, our thoughts go out to those who lost family and friends through some horrific crashes in the last week or so.

Even more tragic when it seems many were avoidable and ‘accident’ is hardly an accurate term. A good option for new year resolutions for many people would be to be a bit less stupid than last year.

You never know when it might mean the difference between life and death, not just your own, but some innocent victim.

And speaking of resolutions, those thinking they might take a month off drinking in January are wasting their time, according to medical experts.

They call it ‘janopause’ when drinkers kid themselves they’re doing their bodies a favour by stopping alcohol intake for a month – only to get regularly plastered for the rest of the year with gay abandon (her again?)

The so called detox month, says the British Liver Trust, is “medically futile” and fails to rejuvenate the liver in the long term.

Worse, it gives many drinkers the false notion that it’s okay to go hard for the rest of the year.

Doctors say it’s better to take a few days off a week, through the entire year, than going dry for one month only.

You don’t see that every day

We’ve an interesting bunch of letters as usual this week.

It seems the festive mood doesn’t deter some of our most ardent letter writers from continuing to crack the whip over local issues.

At the start of the new year it’s a good time thank our regulars who help bring fresh and lively discussion to the paper.

We don’t all agree with their views, but it’s healthy and a good sign of strong democracy that so many folk are prepared to speak out and put their name to their beliefs and values.

Thanks again, and keep them coming.

One letter did stand out this week and makes a rare headline: Someone is agreeing with Bill Faulkner!

On that note, we see that Bill has notched up 10 years of columns in the Sun. That’s a decade of providing a rare, and sometimes controversial, insight behind the scenes at the Tauranga City Council.

Again, not everyone agrees with Bill’s views, but it sure keeps debate lively and many readers tell us it’s the best source of what is actually going on at the council.

Our thanks to Bill for his commitment to this column; and also to all our other regulars in the Sun and SunLive for baring their souls for the benefit of readers.

It’s bloody rude if you ask me. A furore has broken out over a television advert for tampons, featuring a drag queen.

Transgender groups are claiming...well I’m not sure what they’re claiming, but it’s clear to see they’re upset because their mascara is running.

Anyway, the RR team agrees. We think it’s wrong to diss transsexuals and crossdressers for the sake of a tampon commercial.

I think they should go to the top on this: call their local MP to complain, and see if they can pull some strings.

Sodden holiday can’t sink spirits

People brave the rain on New Year’s Eve at the Exodus reggae festival in Papamoa.

It was a soggy New Year’s Eve throughout the Bay of Plenty as heavy rain and strong winds disrupted celebration, closed roads and forced parties inside.

With the free entertainment at Mount Maunganui cancelled for the first time in 15 years, police reported a calm and quiet New Year’s Eve, while tourism and hospitality sectors experienced a boom in business.

On December 30, Tauranga City Council was forced to cancel the construction of its street and beach stages along Marine Parade – terminating the planned entertainment.

The council’s event delivery manager, Penny Mitropolous, says this was a hard decision to make.

“It was really difficult, a few stressful hours of meetings to go through the options.

“I think as people realised how bad the weather was on the day, generally people understood why we had done it.”

Police Senior Sergeant Joel Lamb says it was a calm New Year’s Eve in Mount Maunganui with the cancellation of planned events reducing the numbers downtown.

“The decision by the Tauranga City Council to cancel the entertainment was the responsible decision and allowed time for police and the public to adjust their plans to ensure a safe summer.”

Many plan changes saw a shift to indoor entertainment and businesses in the region were kept busy.

Bay City Cinemas administrator Shayna Maunder says they had sell-out sessions.

On New Year’s Eve, the Tauranga theatre sold 1776 movie tickets with Tin Tin in 3D the most popular film choice.

One outdoor event to succeed, however, was the Bay of Plenty’s first New Year’s Eve reggae festival, Exodus. It received bigger than expected crowds in Papamoa.

Although final ticket sales are yet to be confirmed, organiser Ara Adams-Tamatea says about 6500 were sold.

Mount Maunganui cafes and bars have enjoyed large crowds during the last week too.

Brigitte Van Weele, owner of Slowfish Cafe, located under the Twin Towers, says the cafe did more than 500 covers on New Year’s Day. “We had a super busy New Year’s Day, despite the weather, it is still continuing now.”

Miss Mount Maunganui and Little Miss Sunshine competitions are on today at the main beach, 3-5pm and Miss Papamoa is on at Papamoa Reserve on Saturday, 3-5pm.

After more than 33 years of waiting to host the country’s peak primary school athletics competition – the starter gun is about to be fired for the North Island Colgate Games at Tauranga Domain.

Organising committee chairman Rolf Porter says the three-day event, which begins today – Friday, January 6 – is a great showcase for children’s athletics and everyone involved is excited

about hosting the competition in Tauranga for the first time.

“It’s a great time for the whole family – it’s a real buzz. The children really love it,” says Rolf.

The competition, which is rotated between the seven North Island athletic districts, can now be hosted in Tauranga following the construction of an all-weather athletic track.

Rolf has been involved in children’s athletics since his son started running at Greerton Athletics Club 14 years ago. He has helped as an official marshalling young athletes at the last nine Colgate events.

This year, he joins 130 other officials running the Tauranga event by helping as a track referee along with hosting official guests.

The three day event, running from January 6-8, will see 1632 athletes competing in track and field events, including a team of 92 Australians who are warming up ahead of the Trans-Tasman Challenge in Auckland next weekend. The event will draw 4000 visitors to the region.

Rolf, who describes the event as a breeding ground for future stars, is uncertain how many Western Bay of Plenty athletes are taking part. But he says having a local event has definitely encouraged stronger local involvement.

“There are quite a number (of local athletes) taking part and there should be a good performance across the board in all fields.”

Motorists to be mindful at train crossings Collisions between vehicles and trains at public road level crossings are at their lowest number since 1997 according to figures released by KiwiRail.

This is despite an accident in December, in which a freight train hit a man along the tracks by Kairua Road, near Papamoa.

Te Maia Rameka was killed when he was hit by the train as he walked along the tracks on his daily run into Papamoa.

The 53-year-old’s body was discovered by railway workers.

Police Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders says the man was single and a beneficiary from Papamoa.

The death is referred to the coroner.

KiwiRail infrastructure and engineering general manager Rick van Barneveld says there have been 14 collisions between vehicles and trains at public level crossings to date in 2011.

“This is eight lower than the total for last year and 22 lower than 2005 when there were 36 collisions.”

Two motorists have died this year in level crossing collisions and 10 people have died from trespassing on railway tracks.

Rick urges motorists to drive safely and not be complacent around level crossings during the holidays.

“We’re pleased most people seem to be taking more care and driving safely around railway level crossings, but we also appreciate it’s a busy time of year and people can be easily distracted or in a hurry to get somewhere.

“We would urge motorists and pedestrians to take their time around level crossings and to stay focused and obey the warning signs that are there to protect them.”

KiwiRail has announced it has completed upgrades of a further three level crossings around the country, including new half-arm barriers installed at the Totara Street crossing in Mount Maunganui.

Tiki Taane: a rebel with good cause

Every inch of skin is covered in tattoos; from arms, hands and neck to the more unusual tattoos on his palms and ears.

Fingers wrapped in solid silver rings and wrists bound with leather cuffs, Tiki Taane looks more like a punk rocker than the pioneer of New Zealand dub.

This outward appearance only further emphasises Tiki’s self-confessed rebellious ways.

“Ever since I dropped out of school at 14-years-old, I started my first heavy metal band called Cultivation, which was all about pro-marijuana.

“Since then I have always had this rebellious attitude, and do still to this day, and I’m 35-years-old.”

Self-taught in pubs and bars in the early 1990s, Tiki was learning how to mix bands – something that was “highly illegal; looking back I don’t know how I did that”.

Now, Tiki is not only forging his own solo career, but is continuing to engineer and produce some of the biggest names in New Zealand music.

He recently produced the double platinum selling Six60 album and is the sound engineer for drum and bass group Shapeshifter, a role he has had since the band’s formation in 2000.

Since going solo from Salmonella Dub in 2007, Tiki has produced two solo albums: Past, Present, Future, and his latest work, In The World Of Light.

He also owns Tikidub Productions, which produces his merchandise and that of other New Zealand bands such as The Black Seeds, P Money and Ladi 6.

Despite his rebellious nature getting him into trouble even now – most notably for his arrest at Illuminati Superclub in April last year when he sang the NWA anthem F*** Tha Police – it is his love of music that has driven him to build his success.

“It’s a big bad tough world and that is probably why I left school so young, I wasn’t meant for school; I was meant to be making music and art, and it’s the only thing that was worth getting up out of bed for.”

In a year when Tiki played at Glastonbury, opened the Rugby World Cup with his song My Lion and wrote music and songs for a documentary on Christchurch’s earthquakes called When a City Falls, his highlight for 2011 was not an obvious success; instead it was his controversial arrest.

“I look back on that and go ‘that could have been really sour’, but it has ended up with all these opportunities unfolding because of it.

“It was a real test of my character and a test for a lot of people, particularly those close to me.

“We managed to blow out the other side and even now it’s gone down in history.”

Tiki Taane, presented by Pato Entertainment, is playing tonight at Illuminati Superclub for the first time since his arrest from 10pm.

Tiki then continues touring this month with Shapeshifter on Saturday, January 7 at Waihi Beach Hotel and on Sunday, January 8 he is performing with DJ Sambora at Waihi Beach Hotel.

He is also performing at Rotorua’s new night club Heaven&Hell on January 13.

Go bush in our backyard

From short family strolls to day-long hikes, the Department of Conservation is encouraging people to continue the Kiwi summer tradition of heading to the outdoors during the holiday period.

DOC’s Tauranga community relations manager Katrina Knill says there are plenty of bush walks and interesting areas to discover in the Western Bay of Plenty – and urges locals and visitors to get out and enjoy them.

“There are a lot of day trips you can do. It all comes down to what you’re looking for,” says Katrina.

She says the area is rich in family walks and heritage areas, preserving both Maori and European relics from early settlement.

For a family day out, Katrina lists her top pick as Otanewainuku (Oropi), Rapurapu Kauri

(Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park), Wairere Falls (south of Te Aroha) or Orokawa Bay (Waihi Beach).

The closest to Tauranga (15km south) is Otanewainuku, offering virgin unlogged forest and is home to a variety of native birds and animals, including Kiwi, thanks to volunteer’s efforts to encourage birdlife.

Otanewainuku is suitable for a day trip and offers panoramic views from the summit (640 metres above sea level, 90 minutes return).

Alternatively the ‘Rimu Loop Walk’ at Otanewainuku offers a gently graded walk featuring some impressively large rimu trees (45 minutes return).

Another walk which Katrina says is well worthwhile – but takes the extra effort of a drive over the Kaimais – is Wairere Falls near Te Aroha.

“Wairere Falls is over the other side, but it definitely is worth the trip.”

The track takes walkers through a beautiful, diverse range of natural scenery – from

various native tree groves passing cascading river drops, before culminating in a spectacular 153m high falls and views over the Waikato Plains.

In summer, there are plenty of pools to wade and paddle in and the track can be explored further up the river. The 5km walk, which takes threefour hours return, even offers the hot summer walker a chance to cool down with plenty of pools to paddle in.

About 50 childcare centres and businesses from around the Bay of Plenty have achieved Breastfeeding Friendly accreditation from Toi Te Ora – Public Health Service.

Health improvement advisor Ronda Cleland Weiss says these are supportive environments where mother can feel comfortable breastfeeding their babies.

These places include cafes, restaurants, early childhood centres, retailers and libraries.

“We are really impressed with the amount of support and enthusiasm from businesses and their staff across the region,” says Ronda.

The Breastfeeding Friendly initiative is run across the Bay of Plenty and Lakes regions.

People can identify a Breastfeeding Friendly environment by signs on the premises.

Robert Harris Coffee Roasters in Tauranga is one of the cafes that recently received Breastfeeding Friendly accreditation.

“It’s important to provide somewhere for mothers so they have a comfortable space to breastfeed,” says owner Susanne Irwin.

One of initiatives Robert Harris Coffee Roasters undertook towards achieving accreditation was to train staff to support breastfeeding customers.

Susanne says this is as simple as offering a glass of water to breastfeeding mums or assisting them with food trays.

The cafe also provides baby changing facilities.

Family courting success

Coming from a family obsessed by basketball, it was only a matter of time before Cydney Ebeling fell under the game’s spell.

Three years ago, the Otumoetai College student, now 14, was waiting at QE2 Action Centre while her brother was trialling for a Western Bay rep team when she was encouraged to try out herself.

At the time, Cydney was playing social basketball, but her main sports focus was running. This changed when she was selected for the under 13 team, following in the footsteps of her successful basketball-bent twin Landon and elder brother Col. With school holidays well under-

way, Cydney is still practising as hard as ever, throwing hoops with her brothers as she prepares for an upcoming tournament in Australia.

On January 11 she flies out to Albury on the New South WalesVictoria border as a Koru Tour team member to compete in the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup. It is the third-year running Cydney has played at the cup against Australian state age-group teams.

“We don’t normally do amazingly well because the team hardly ever gets to play together compared to the Australian team.

“They give a really good game – they are all so skilled and well coached, it’s a great experience playing them. You learn heaps

from going on the tour.”

Cydney, who is in Year 11 next year, is shooting high for her basketball goals. She is determined to make the New Zealand national age-group team after just missing the cut at trials in February.

“They said if I kept my training up I had a good chance, so that has made me more determined.”

In a few years she aims to make the Emerging Junior Tall Ferns or possibly even earn a United States college scholarship.

“I would absolutely love to get a college scholarship, but that’s still a long way off. It would be great for my basketball and it would be a bonus having family over there,” says Cydney, whose basketball-mad parents Tim (coach) and Josanye both hail from the US.

End war with the neighbour Unruly animals, dangerous trees, inconsiderate renovations or verbal insults is just another day at the office for Neighbours at War. The TV show is now looking for troublesome neighbours in the Bay of Plenty.

The TV2 series is back in production for a seventh series and ready to assist even more Kiwis struggling with the folks next door.

The show enlists councils, mediators, surveyors, arborists and other experts to help put an end to neighbourly disagreements; whether is an argument

over the fence or ongoing disputes.

“Even those who never thought they’d go on TV have been pleasantly surprised by the help our experts can provide,” says producer Tash Christie.

Series director Lee Baker has been with the show for two seasons and in that time, he’s met his fair share of Kiwis fighting feuds over the fence.

“We get to meet a broad range of eccentric, unusual characters.

“It’s a crazy show where anything can happen, but there’s also a sense of satisfaction that comes with being at the helm of the show.

“We definitely want more people on the show. Some people are worried how they’ll react and look on TV, but once they go through the mediation and reach a resolution, they realise it’s worth it.”

With a new season currently in production, the team are looking for more stories.

Father and son writing combo

More than 4000km apart and separated by the Tasman, author Lance Morcan says the key to co-writing novels with son James (who is based in Sydney) relies heavily on modern technology.

The rare combination of the father and son coauthors inevitably “ends up with a few disagreements, with the loudest and longest eventually getting their way”.

“The quality element is part of our process – we act as editor for each other,” says Lance.

“Despite being relatively likeminded, the beauty of a father-son writing team is our age gap. We each bring a perspective to writing the story that can appeal to our age groups.”

The Tauranga authors and screenwriters have just cracked Amazon’s top five bestsellers list with their thriller novel The Ninth Orphan, published in August after taking nearly five years to complete.

“Like most writers, we have numerous ideas and we might be working on two or three projects at a time. There is no time to get bored. There have been times where we both have had to sacrifice a lot – financially, we were both unemployed for long periods during our writing so you forsake normal social life and holidays to be committed to the craft.”

The father-son writing duo began out of a love of films. Lance says James had always been very sporty, so it took him by surprise when James showed he had a “bent for the arts” during his OE in Europe.

Despite the distance between them, it seemed father and son were in tune as they were both working on separate screenplays across the world at the same time.

Deciding to put their passions together, the pair joined forces and began working on a screenplay based on Precious McKenzie – the South African-born weightlifter who won four consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals for New Zealand.

This was in 2002. Fast forward and the pair are now working as film producers and are in talks to get the film made with the help of Los Angeles agencies and the New Zealand Film Commission, with Nick Nolte and Kim Basinger in starring roles.

Within this time, The Ninth Orphan and Fiji were both written, the former an international spy thriller and the latter a historical novel.

For Lance, the former Bay Sun editor sees himself as the “word smith” in relationship, whereas James, the actor, is the “bigger picture guy”.

“We have different strengths. On the screenwriting side, he is more

artistic than I am, an innate understanding of film. I love writing and I love film, so for me I have put those two passions together.

“It is never the same process with us. When we write the scripts, we try every process. “Sometimes we write every scene out on a card and lay them out on the floor or we write a paragraph summarising the story and then expand it to five,10, 20 pages and beyond.”

Bringing history to life

A passion for history has seen former Tauranga City Library archivist Jinty Rorke actively helping preserve the region’s heritage for more than 30 years.

and husband David set sail for the Caribbean in 1968, before washing ashore in Tauranga eight years later.

Their self-built yacht first took them to the US Virgin Islands, where they taught for five years.

They then sailed through the Panama Canal, bobbing their way across the Pacific for 18 months.

Plans to come to New Zealand were almost scuttled when they arrived in Tahiti to news Rob Muldoon was tightening up on people coming into New Zealand.

Ignoring this, they sailed on, arriving in Pilot Bay on Labour Weekend, 1976.

With children aged two and four in tow, the Rorkes were keen to stop for a while so their children could enjoy friendships with peers their age.

From studying languages at university, Jinty took a new direction in Tauranga as the city library’s New Zealand archivist – a role she held for 27 years.

She was soon helping research a book on the area’s history for the Tauranga borough centenary, building a reputation as a top local historian. In 2007 she was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal – an honour she says was great recognition for history.

For the last 20 years she has been involved with The Elms Mission House – starting by helping plan the Mission Street property’s preservation when last resident family member Duff Maxwell was about to shift into a retirement home.

“I was interested in history so it was natural that I got involved.

“Duff had moved out just about that time. It was still full of family belongings, so one of the first things that we did was begin on interpreting the collection.”

The old mission house was established in 1847 to replace

a raupo house Reverend Alfred Brown and wife Charlotte had lived in since starting the Te Papa Mission nine years earlier. The property, on its two and a half acre site, has since been lived in by three generations.

Jinty is a long-time member of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, Elms Trust and is now a Tauranga Moana Museum Trust member.

Her main focus is documenting mission house materials for a conservation and maintenance plan so any repairs are in an authentic manner.

“I think we have an obligation to make sure that the children of today and tomorrow understand the past.

“By being able to show how things were different it gives you a better understanding.”

Jumping head over heels for BMX From front cover “You just have to man-up and do it,” says Alex Cranswick.

It is his simple advice for anyone thinking about trying freestyle BMX. For the 18-year-old bike shop worker, freestyle is the only form of BMX riding.

Classic BMX is about racing around tracks, but freestyle is focused on stunts, jumps and tricks, with events often performed in skate bowls or as jumps made off large ramps.

It is the style of outlandish jumps with backflips made famous by the X-Games, which is attracting young participants to the sport.

Alex, who has tried his hand at all types of cycling, from moun-

tain biking and road racing, to uni-cycling, says freestyle leaves the others for dead.

“It’s fun and there’s a whole lot more freedom.”

Whenever he can, Alex heads off at the weekend to compete at freestyle BMX events held throughout the North Island.

Alex is looking forward to the first freestyle BMX event to be held in Tauranga for a few years when BMX Inc Freestyle Club holds a competition on January 7 (rain day January 14) and he is encouraging anyone interested to take part.

“The best thing to do is just have a go – you can learn so much by watching others, but you learn the most by doing it.”

Despite jumping as far as 11 metres and mastering mid-jump

backflips, Alex almost always lands like a cat, and after four years has never broken a bone (unlike many he knows).

The BMX Inc event coordinator, Daniel Belchamber, says the club is putting on the competition to celebrate its 10th year, and he encourages anyone interested to come along to the 17th Avenue skate park with registrations from 11am.

The event doubles as a fundraiser for the Tauranga Foodbank with spectators asked to donate non-perishable food items.

The club is open to riders 11 years and older (helmets are compulsory) and meets every Tuesday at 4.30pm at the Tauranga Salvation Army.

Weapons of mass communication The Global Financial Crisis is a crisis of confidence and a growing distrust of the way money is being massaged and shared around the world.

Inequities have become more obvious as new communication technology has allowed the news to be instant and is revealing the games that our leaders are playing and the increasing gap between rich and poor.

The worldwide protest movements

have a common theme of people standing up for democratic ideals which they believe are being misused against them. Our democracies have relied on faith, believing the leaders we have elected will be acting in our best interests, but ‘news as it happens’, and the social media have been revealing ugly pictures of self serving politicians and their fragile financial systems.

Low voter turnouts in elections is not apathy, but is a sign of the public’s increasing lack of trust in their

leaders and the system. People are using the new smart-phone technology to join together and these groups are watching and openly questioning the politicians. These new social media communities are being heard in every country, in New Zealand and certainly in Western Bay of Plenty.

Patterns of protest have changed.

In Egypt, a regime is overthrown, the army takes over, but its right to rule indiscriminately is rejected and even Muslim extremists who might have moved into a power vacuum have

SmartGrowth future importance I shook my head in disbelief as I read newspaper accounts of the debate had by the Tauranga City Council about SmartGrowth.

I asked myself how elected representatives could lack understanding of the importance of spatial planning and how well regarded our SmartGrowth strategy is at a national level – and why it must be kept alive and relevant by periodic reviews of strategic direction.

Spatial planning is the reason for the success of all internationally competitive cities which are environmentally and economically sustainable – but these cities didn’t just develop one plan and stick to it.

Their planning is kept current – adjusting as population trends and technology changes – ensuring that the city will meet the needs of future populations while making them a functional and attractive place to be now.

The Western Bay of Plenty had a jump on the rest of the country when it initiated SmartGrowth – our long-term growth management strategy that integrates planning for population growth with land use and transport planning.

It has been very successful in driv-

ing infrastructure investment into our region because of the confidence it gave central government that we had a long term plan based on sound information and analysis.

But things change and the information the current strategy is based on is seriously out of date.

Spatial planning has been made mandatory for Auckland and may be rolled out across the country on a regional basis.

We must invest in our future by updating SmartGrowth and linking it with spatial planning for the rest of the Bay of Plenty.

Anything else is just head-inthe-sand stuff – and that is the last thing we need right now.

Ruing the rain, revelling in reality ‘ARK ARK’ I don’t know if this is a sound I make warning the mobile compost machine – namely Flo – away from my food bowl, or what we should be constructing to get all of us away from the big wet!

But I, like most of you, are pretty much over it, and if the boss and I hear some meteorologist say once more that it is a once in a 100 year occurrence, we will head for the hills, which seems like a good idea anyway as I have only been around three years and have already had to put up with two floods and a hail storm, and am struggling to comprehend the entire weather prediction thing.

No worries though, it’s now a new year and who knows what is going to happen?

At least it is better being wet than having to put up with what the good folk and animals in Christchurch are having to put up with.

I do not want to sound flippant, but it gives a new meaning to a ‘whole lot of shakin going on’.

The resilience of you good folk is admirable and we are all thinking of you – and stick with it.

Now it’s time for new year resolutions; another waste of time as 99 per cent do not stick with them anyway, but to go with the Flo, so to speak, I decided to make one, and that was to…

Hunt more, run more, and retrieve more feathered game – that is, if the boss made a resolution to improve his aim, as last year I told him, ‘if you want me to retrieve these varmints, please get them out of the sky first’.

I have to admit it is good having my mate

Flo back around and I can tell you we are going to have some fun and adventure this year – so pin your ears back and I hope we can give you a few laughs with our exploits.

I’ve been away on swashbuckling adventures, mostly in the rain, but that hasn’t stopped my typically enthusiastic Labrador attitude of enjoying everything; including remembering all my lessons on good behaviour from Wendy the dog trainer.

Hey if you are going to chase sticks at the beach all day, does it matter that it’s raining?

Not to me, I chased sticks till the tide went out, then demanded more.

Between stick chasing and swimming antics, the boss took me on a couple of seafaring voyages and we saw a whole lot of the coastline – though mostly through grey rain clouds. It was a good time for me to leave town, after my near disgrace at the family Christmas lunch. It involved a chocolate mud cake and a tantalising easy pull of the table cloth.

Anyway, moving right along…

I like the idea of fishing. Getting dinner on the end of a string, you just pull it in when you’re hungry.

Mrs Boss landed two big-eye tuna. I couldn’t believe it. My eyes were as big and round as the tuna’s as she nonchalantly hauled them aboard the boat.

When the rain got too much for us, we hightailed to the bush cabin and I met the crazed neighbour Huff, who showed me the dos and don’ts of bush living, which according to Huff, is mostly don’ts.

We gave a couple of pesky possums the curry up too.

My friend Ruger came out a couple of times and when the boss let him off, Ruger snapped angrily and the possums were dead before they hit the ground.

Of course, I would have nailed them, if Ruger hadn’t.

I am enjoying my job as ‘tidy up person’ for Ruger, retrieving the furry varmints and helping the boss turn them into compost.

It was good to get back home though, and even better to catch up with Ady. Especially when I found her bowl was half full of Ziwipeak, which I helped her out with.

Hip hop help for developing teenagers From graffiti and youth development to standing for parliament – for Tauranga’s hip hop activist Jayson Gardiner it is all linked to a focus on making a difference at the grassroots.

Mana Party, but his full attention has returned to helping the area’s youth.

During the last 16 years, the hip hop leader has been sharing his knowledge with youth to foster their potential. Initially, he was helping at the frontline for The Ark and Atomic youth centres by teaching the four elements of the hip hop movement – graffiti, break dancing, MCing and rapping.

Last year, Jayson’s focus moved to running his own youth programme Jam Sessions with partner and singer Hera Tamati (who performs under the name MC Nytmare).

They are also taught how to apply those skills in a commercial environment – including how to do marketing, tender for contracts and put together proposals.

All sepia hued, backwoods rustic, moonshine shack from a bygone era. Exactly where you would imagine most (if not all) the songs on this disc would have originated.

This is Kokomo (in essence Derek Jacombs, Grant Bullot and Nigel Masters, with Ian Gilpin and Mike Kirk on about half of the tracks and a guest appearance by Jan Preston on Sporting Life Blues), doffing their collective hats to the old blues masters, that obviously inspired and kindled their own love of the blues.

That being so, this is not a collection of slavishly fawning reproductions of a ‘musical heros’, long past triumphs. This is unmistakeably Kokomo, spinning some damned fine old school, ragtime/delta/folk flavoured

piano, does nothing to disrupt this cohesiveness (there are many instances of guest artists hi-jacking tracks they play on), rather adding another depth and dimension that lifts and supports the already beautifully layered and textured playing evident on the surrounding tracks.

While there is nothing here you would describe as being new or innovative (of course that was never the intention of this collection), the music on this disc is undeniably invigorated by and saturated with, the enthusiasm, admiration and consummate musicianship of Kokomo. If you have any interest in or affection for the blues as it was in its childhood, then adding this to your catalogue is a no brainer. If not, now’s the time and here is a very good place to start.

Of the 12 tracks offered here, two are Jacombs originals, one Dylan composition, two Kiwi penned songs, and the balance being covers of (largely unheralded) blues greats; the guys that gave latter generations the building blocks to create the musical genres we most often hear and listen to today. With the amps, pick-ups, effects pedals etcetera consigned to the backroom, what we are presented with is pure and unadulterated music, performed by musicians well schooled and versed in the playing of their instrument of choice, melding together to create such a wholeness of sound it almost belies the brilliance of each individual player (regular musical co-conspirators Gilpin and Kirk included).

Mount Maunganui beach goers will be entertained with the sounds of a Hawaiian summer on Sunday, January 8 when the Fielding High School ukulele band performs a free show.

The ukulele has become a popular instrument in recent years. Originally associated with Hawaii, its name translates to ‘jumping flea’. The instrument was heavily promoted by King Kalakaua, a patron of the arts who incorporated it into performances at royal gatherings. The school band is performing from midday until 2pm by the Mount Maunganui main beach toilets.

Airshow eyed for anniversary opener The Royal New Zealand Air Force is expecting to start its 75th anniversary celebrations with a good showing of aircraft at this month’s Tauranga City Airshow.

It is planning to have the RNZAF aerobatic team, The Red Checkers, and an Iroquois helicopter flying at the airshow on at Auckland Anniversary Weekend.

The RNZAF’s recently upgraded C130 Hercules and a newly purchased A109 helicopter are also expected to be on static display.

RNZAF personnel will be on hand to show people through these two aircraft.

Tauranga based New Zealand Defence Force recruiter, Staff Sergeant Erin Te Kani, has also booked the NZDF recruiting bus for the airshow.

She says this includes many dis-

plays and interactive activities for potential recruits to check out.

Erin will have a team of recruiters available to answer any questions regarding careers in the NZ Army, RNZAF or RNZ Navy.

April 1 is the RNZAF’s 75th anniversary and there is a busy schedule of public events planned for the first quarter of 2012 to celebrate the milestone.

The first of these is at the ‘Classics of the Sky’ Tauranga City Airshow, on January 28-29, and the last is on ANZAC Day, April 25.

RNZAF Wing Commander and airshow director Bill Blaikie says the celebrations are about giving the public an opportunity to share in the success of the air force.

Paintball Extreme owner Shane Paterson says the lasertag looks and sounds like a typical paintball gun, except instead of making a mess with paint, opponents are pinned down using a laser sight.

That said, don’t be discouraged from paintball in fear of too much pain or the classic big welts often associated with paintballing – it is actually quite gentle, says Shane.

“Most people, before they come along and try it are worried, but after they play you hear heaps of people say, that wasn’t that bad.

“We use tournament grade paintball so it is very brittle.

“If you were at point blank range you might end up a bit pink, but there are no nasty welts, particularly when we get lots of younger kids in to play.”

The highest level of safety is taken at Paintball Extreme with all protective masks, gloves and optional overalls available to ensure the paint doesn’t go anywhere it isn’t wanted.

Bookings are essential with a minimum of six per group.

Evening games are offered at both the indoor and outdoor venues.

Don’t lets pets overindulge We’ve been having a very busy time at the Veterinary Hospital lately, so here are some hints to help prevent emergency trips to the vets.

Lilies (Tiger, Easter and Day) are very toxic to cats; chewing on a leaf or bulb or licking the pollen can seriously harm the kidneys, so keep those bouquets out of the way from inquisitive kittens.

Tinsel, ribbon and string are dangerous for cats if swallowed and similarly, we have already done a few surgeries this season to remove small toys from dogs’ intestines.

Don’t feed your pets the leftover party food. Fatty treats like bacon and sausages can cause pancreatitis.

Bones, kebab sticks and corncobs can get lodged in the intestines or cause constipation.

Mouldy foods contain tremorgenic mycotoxins; substances that can make your pet shake and tremble, even seizure.

Chocolate contains two pet toxins; caffeine and theobromine.

Together they cause vomiting, trembling, hyperactivity and potentially death.

The darker the chocolate, the worse it is for your pet.

Macadamia nuts can cause hyperthermia, weakness and vomiting in dogs.

If rising bread dough is ingested, it continues to rise in the stomach, causing bloat, but also producing ethanol, a type of alcohol.

Grapes and raisins can damage the kidneys and onions can damage red blood cells causing anaemia.

Xylitol is a sugar substitute found in many sugar-free gums and lollies.

The Wishing Tree animal winners Animal lovers have given Oropi Native Bird Rescue Haven a boost with $900 in donations through Animal Antics’ wishing tree fundraiser.

Pet shop owner Dianne Mitchell thanked customers for their generous support with donations received for every decoration they hung on the store’s Christmas tree in December.

“Not only were they helping Chrissy and Errol at the bird rescue haven, but they were helping us decorate the tree and get into the Christmas spirit.”

Everyone who donated to the fundraiser also went in the draw to win a pet hamper (generously donated by suppliers) – which was won by Tauranga dog owner Lynette Winters and her dog Nicky.

Dianne says they want to support the Oropi Native Bird Rescue Haven because of all the good work they do to rehabilitate birds in the local area.

There was also incentive to help Chrissy owing to her Animal Antics Wishing Tree competition winner Lynette Wilkins won a hamper of goodies for her dog Nicky (inset).

No holiday from pet care When we race away on holiday, the ones we love – our pets – can sometimes be forgotten. Help keep pets safe during the summer season by following the tips below.

• Holiday guests and other activity can be stressful and even frightening to pets. It can also trigger illness and intestinal upset. Make sure pets have a safe place to retreat in your house. And make sure they are wearing current ID in case they escape out a door when guests come and go.

• Put away toys after children play with their new Christmas gifts. Small plastic pieces and rubber balls are common causes of choking and intestinal

blockage in dogs. Ingested plastic or cloth toys must often be removed surgically.

• When pets are stressed by holiday activity or during travel, they may require more water. Dogs typically pant more when they feel stressed. Keep fresh water available for them to drink.

• Reduce stress by keeping feeding and exercise on a regular schedule.

• Always make time to care for pets. Some folks become lax about walking their dogs, and a few resort to letting pets out on their own. This puts the animal in danger, while also leading to nuisance complaints and dog bite incidents. Remind pet owners not to take a holiday from responsibly caring for their pets.

• Do not let guests feed pets human food. There are many holiday foods, including fatty meats, gravies, poultry skin, bones, chocolate and alcohol that can cause illnesses from vomiting and diarrhoea to highly serious pancreatitis and other toxic reactions. In addition, candy wrappers, aluminium foil pieces and ribbons can choke pets.

• Now is a good time to double-check smoke detectors. When batteries run low, the devices often emit alert or alarm sounds at frequencies that can be painful and frightening to many pets. If people are not home when the alert/alarm sounds, pets will have to endure that sound until their owner’s return, which can be traumatic.

Omanu Beach Surf Life Saving Club and Mount Maunganui College have entered into an agreement where the club can use the college pool outside school hours.

We’re going to do a feasibility study over the next year for the development of the pool, so it can be utilised all year round.

It’s a really exciting opportunity for the college, the surf club and the wider community.

The pool will be open to the public during January on a trial basis and, if successful, it will also open for weekends through until April.

The entry cost will be $2 and this month will be open from 10am to 3pm, seven days a week.

There have already been spinoffs for the club – we’ve trained up a number of pool lifeguards and we’re also running several swim programmes.

Beginner swim squad training starts again next week and runs on Tuesday and Thursday from 4-5pm, targeting 9-14-year-olds as well as adults.

Sadly, the miserable New Year weather meant we had to cancel our annual the Pak ’n Save Omanu Classic carnival, although we’re hopeful of staging the feature Ian Porteous Memorial Ironman race later in the season.

Rotary donates to International Jamboree Four Bay of Plenty Rotary clubs have donated a large sum of money to assist the Girl Guides with the International Jamboree.

Representatives from Mount Maunganui, Papamoa, Te Puke and Maketu donated $1200 to the Girl Guides for the 2012 International Girl Guide Jamboree at Tui Ridge in Rotorua.

The Jamboree is from January 14 to 21 and it’s expected at least 2300 girls will attend, accompanied by

We’ve got a record 54-strong team heading to Red Beach, north of Auckland, this weekend for the Owen Chapman Cup. This is another good chance for our athletes to get some valuable competition, and two to watch out for are young swimmer Jessica Miller and beach sprinting and board paddling star Arna Wright.

The junior surf programme starts up again on January 8, but in the meantime, our holiday programme has been in full swing.

As part of that, the club hosted 23 athletes from the Otumoetai Swimming Club in a week-long camp.

The gold and silver squad members, all aged 12 and under, used the opportunity to do a bit of teambuilding and learn some basic surf lifesaving skills – board paddling out to Motuotau (Rabbit) Island, body-surfing, wading and jumping off the blow hole – with the highlight being a 4km board paddle around Mauao.

The camp, organised by Mount head coach John ‘Spindles’ Bryant, and his counterpart at Otumoetai Swimming Club, Stefan Swanepoel, was extremely successful, further building the links between the two clubs.

In other news, we had a quiet start to the year – the heavy rain on New Year’s Eve meant the number of clients choosing to use our beautiful beach for snoozing was well down, while Patrol 3 had a relatively smooth time on New Year’s Day as well.

Our women’s boat crew did brilliantly at the second round of the national series in Whangamata on Monday, finishing second behind Orewa in their final.

Lastly, a big congratulations to Sam Shergold, who won the recent ‘Mount Monster’ training race.

Sam blitzed the 5km sand run, 5km board paddle, 11km ski and 1.5km run to the blowhole and 400m swim

The girls have made tremendous commitments to personal fundraising to meet the approximately $800 each required to attend. Tasks undertaken have included a variety of household chores, baby sitting, gardening and baking stalls. For most, this will be their first experience of a Jamboree and for some, their first experience

of being away from home. Jamborees are all about new adventures, whether it is outdoor activities like abseiling, fly fishing, sailing or astroballing.

There are always other challenges too, from making a film to making a circuit breaker and designing a web page.

The key theme though is fun, while developing qualities of leadership that will assist them in later life.

Finding her artistic voice Margaret-Anne Barnett first discovered the Learning Connexion when her husband found an ad in the local paper.

“One day my husband saw the ad and he said, ‘Why don’t you go with Steph (my daughter) for a weekend?’” says MargaretAnne.

“And I went ‘Ohhh, I can’t draw’ and he said ‘Just give it a go’, and that weekend was an absolute revelation.

“I did a piece of work, which I was really pleased with, and that got me started.”

She joined her daughter on a

print making weekend class as a casual student and she enjoyed it so much that she enrolled in the Certificate of Art and Creativity programme through distance delivery.

On completion of the course she intends to enrol in a diploma programme.

As a child, Margaret says she always wanted to paint and draw.

“My favourite thing when I was little was a metal box of water colour paints that my

grandmother used to use – she was a bit of a water colourist.

“It was full of those little

Margaret says distance delivery works well because she was also working full time. She was nervous at first how she would fit it all in, but ended up finishing two months earlier than expected.

Coastal research field station for Bay “We have created a beginning that will be the start of something very important. Research will start here, but will then be disseminated around the world.”

The field station on Cross Road is part of the university’s recently launched Environmental Research Institute.

Chair in Coastal Science Professor Chris Battershill will be based at the field station, which will also be used

by PhD and Masters students who are conducting research in and around Tauranga Harbour and around the Bay of Plenty region.

Group at Canterbury University Professor David Schiel says the new facility is a significant step forward for the community.

David is the only other chair of marine science in New Zealand and he is working with the University of Waikato on the environmental response to the Rena grounding.

While only just officially launched, the field station has already become a critical base for a major research project currently underway. The university is collaborating with Bay of Plenty Regional Council, iwi, Massey University and the Cawthron Institute on an intensive ‘Whole of Harbour’ marine health survey between Bowentown and Te Maunga. The 30-strong team of staff, iwi, students and volunteers are using the facility as a base to meet and process marine samples.

Melanoma not worth the tan A Tauranga woman is raising awareness of melanoma after being diagnosed with the disease on December 5.

Lesley Mungavin is warning people to look after their skin this summer.

Lesley Mungavin received the news she had terminal melanoma on her 54th birthday.

She is now determined to help promote awareness of this terrible disease which she says creeps up on you without warning.

She says she always loved the sun.

“I was a young, intelligent, healthy outdoors girl in Dunedin.”

Lesley spent most of her holiday time in Alexandra and in the “burning warmth of the Central Otago sunshine.

She says she lived in the waters and hillsides around the town she loved. “My skin was burnt often – usually with the help of coconut oil.

“I browned up beautifully. What for, I don’t know, because back in Dunedin we all retuned to our peaches and cream complexions.

“However don’t be fooled, my skin tone was always olive and those of you who think this is a defense, beware.”

At the age of 35, Lesley says she had her first mole off.

Not the one she was worried about, but one the doctor spotted. “But it was fine. Back then doctors were not so aware of this killer. But mine was and I wish he had gone over my body then like doctors do now.

“He would have seen the large black irregular mole on my back and possibly have had it taken off while it was still insitu (sitting on the outside and still harmless).”

By 2003, however, the mole was invasive.

“Very early invasive infact, only a five per cent chance of going to the organs,” says Lesley.

She says the next episode was twice deep.

“A smaller mole, still very black and this time very symmetrical on my upper arm. “This one measured 1.5mm and had a 10 per cent chance of going internal.”

She says follow up care involved a mole map and specialists and doctors also recommended a three month

check-up to detect early advance of the disease. “Nothing has ever shown up as troublesome. I feel better now than I have all my life, I have completed six months at the gym and am strong, healthy and alive.

“That was until I fell over because I could not use my left side.”

Lesley immediately thought she’d had a stroke.

“But no, CT scan revealed two tumors in the brain, another showed seven in the lungs, some rather large.”

She is now trying to raise the awareness of the risks of sunburn and is also looking into a potential treatment overseas.

“The Braff mutation drug is commercially available in America and can be ordered by oncologists in New Zealand, but at patient’s expense of $10,000 a month.

“There is also an even newer drug available through Mike McCrystal who has five patients on treatment who are at end stage cancer.”

The drug, Yervoy, is only given to people who qualify on compassionate grounds.

Lesley says the Melanoma Foundation is working hard on getting the funding for Braff Testing.

Summer holidays mean we often let our health and beauty regimes take a back foot to enjoying sun, sand, surf and good food.

But keeping safe and healthy during the holidays can be a simple process according to some health and beauty experts around Tauranga and Mount Maunganui.

Synergy Vitality Spa owner Jaye Clark says the two most important things to remember this summer is sunscreen and exfoliation.

“Sunscreen is an absolute must obviously. Find something that is physically based so it

doesn’t have a lot of chemicals in it and make sure it is SPF 30 plus. Dermalogica and True Solutions make some great moisturiser/sunscreen combinations that are SPF 30.

“Exfoliation is important because with the dehydration of the sun and surf, the skin needs a good rub to get rid of the dead skin cells and allow moisturiser to work at its optimum. A moisturiser with Vitamin D, E and A are great for antiageing.”

Skin Centre clinic team leader Julia McMillian says keeping sun smart is vital this summer, with it only taking a few minutes for the sun’s rays to do damage – one of the biggest causes of aging appearances.

“There is no other rule than stay out of the sun. The next best thing is to cover up with long sleeves and pants or skirts. There is some lovely light summer clothing available and wearing this means you take the guess work out of wearing sunblock – such as, do I have enough on? Do I need to reapply?”

Julia says if anyone is concerned about a mole or legion during the summer period to phone the centre straight away.

“If we think it is something sinister, we won’t let you out the door and will sort it out then and there.”

It is not just outward appearance that needs taking care of – health and beauty starts on the inside.

Owner of Mind, Body, Nutrition Margot Van Cingel says her most important tip is to eat breakfast.

“Studies show eating breakfast consistently aids weight loss and maintenance. If you are not a morning people, make it easy on yourself by preparing the night before.

“The key ingredients for breakfast should be protein and carbohydrates such as eggs and grainy toast or egg with tomato.”

While getting active might be difficult for some during summer, Margot says it is easy as 20 minutes a day in the morning.

“I am a big fan of interval training. I do 20 minutes every morning.

This is so easy to schedule in. The simplest way is to do two minutes easy, two minutes medium and two minutes fast, with 30 seconds hard out and repeat. “Walking is really easy to do, with the 30 seconds of hard out activity being jogging or a light run. For me, I am now doing 50 per cent walking and 50 per cent

Being a safe host this summer season

The summer season is a time to celebrate and have friends and family around your home.

But when it comes to hosting a good party, the key is safety of your guests – particularly when alcohol is involved.

When you’re having people over for dinner, a barbecue or just to catch up, and alcohol is included, you’re going to want to ensure everyone (including you) has a good time and that no one over indulges and gets hurt or in trouble. The following tips from ACC and ALAC will help you and your guests have a great get together without any unnecessary injuries.

Set your expectations in advance Be clear what you’re inviting people over for and what you’re not expecting to happen. Think about who you invite and if you know there are some people that are likely to get drunk, talk to them in advance and put things in place to keep them safe.

Plan to do things other than eat and drink The best bit about social occasions like parties and celebrations is catching up with people and having fun.

Plan entertainment or activities to get people up out of their chairs and talking and laughing. But don’t mix alcohol with any potentially dangerous activities.

Look after young people around alcohol Keep an eye on everyone, especially young people around drinks. They’re not as bulletproof as they think.

Get them involved in planning the get together so they can help plan ways to avoid too much alcohol as well.

And remember that your children watch your behaviour. They are more likely to do as you do, not as you say.

Provide substantial food – not just chips Whenever you’re providing alcohol, provide food that stays in the body longer and takes time to digest like bread, pasta, spuds, meat and cheese. Make sure there

Supervise the kids If young children are going to be there, make sure there’s a responsible adult or older person looking out for them and providing entertainment.

Look after your guests Don’t let them drive home if they have had too much to drink. Ensure they get a taxi or offer them a bed for the night. Don’t let people walk home alone.

Zucchini recipe harvest Vegetable gardeners should now be reaping bounty from their efforts over the past months – with plentiful supplies of zucchinis, cucumbers, lettuce, corn and beans.

Tomatoes are ripening too, but the recent heavy rain has left many gardeners still waiting to pick their first.

Corn and Zucchini melody Ready in 30 minutes, serves five.

Ingredients 4 slices bacon 2 cups chopped zucchini 1 1/2 cups fresh corn kernels 1 small onion, chopped 1 pinch pepper 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Directions Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown.

Reserve one tablespoon of drippings. Drain bacon, chop, and set aside.

Heat the bacon drippings in the skillet over medium heat.

Saute the zucchini, corn, and onion until tender but still crisp, about 10 minutes.

Season with pepper.

Spoon vegetables into a bowl and sprinkle with chopped bacon and shredded cheese.

Zucchini bread

Ready in hour 40 minutes, produces two loaves.

Ingredients 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon 3 eggs 1 cup vegetable oil 2 1/4 cups white sugar 3 teaspoons vanilla extract

But the biggest challenge facing anyone with an abundant harvest is keeping dinner interesting for the household, rather than repeating the same recipes.

With zucchinis set to offer an ongoing harvest for the next three months, the Weekend Sun has discovered a few recipes to help keep your family coming back for seconds.

2 cups grated zucchini 1 cup chopped walnuts Directions Grease two 8x4inch pans. Preheat oven to 165C. Sift flour, salt, baking powder, soda, and cinnamon together in a bowl.

Beat eggs, oil, vanilla, and sugar together in a large bowl.

Add sifted ingredients to the creamed mixture, and beat well.

Stir in zucchini and nuts until well combined.

Pour batter into prepared pans.

Bake for 40 to 60 minutes, or until tester inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool in pan on rack for 20 minutes.

Remove bread from pan and cool.

Flavour compliments seafood well If you are looking for a nice sauvignon blanc to serve with seafood, then I highly recommend this week’s wine: Mt. Difficulty Sauvignon Blanc 2011.

From Central Otago, this wine is ‘distinctly sauvignon’, not tropical, but rather nicely restrained and elegant.

Characters of gooseberry and passion fruit combined with a minerality derived from the gravels of Bannockburn distinguish this wine.

Freedom of choice At the Tauranga Farmers’ Market before Christmas the throngs of market goers stocked up their fridges and pantries with the best seasonal produce.

Gooseberry custard pie.

Farmers’ markets are becoming more popular throughout the country and now with the Food Bill before Parliament passing its first reading – this positive trend and habit is at risk.

I’m hoping opposition to this astonishing proposal grows as people become aware of its implications and how it would affect our basic freedom to choose where we buy our fresh food.

Mother Nature plays a vital role in providing us with fresh seasonal food and sometimes we don’t get the usual quality we expect.

For example, the strawberries we devour at this time of the year, not to mention the cherries, seem to be somewhat affected by unseasonal fluctuations in temperature and rainfall. Mamaku blue blueberries are late this year because of the weather, but I did notice they had fresh gooseberries.

It’s been about 15 years since I have tasted these old school, interestingly tartberries, and I never buy strawberries after it’s been raining, so I opted to buy a kilo for Christmas.

Along with the Heilala vanilla syrup and a revamp of an old rhubarb custard tart recipe, I came up with this week’s recipe for gooseberry custard pie.

Ingredients: 1kg fresh gooseberrys topped and tailed ½ cup of sugar Pastry 1 cup of baker’s flour ½ cup cornflour ½ cup icing sugar 100g butter cubed and frozen 1 egg zest of one lemon Custard ½ litre of milk ¼ cup Heilala vanilla syrup 4 large egg yokes 1 tablespoon flour 1 tablespoon of sugar

Method: Cook the gooseberry and sugar together with a splash of water for only a few minutes. Make the custard by warming the milk and Heilala vanilla syrup together, beat egg yokes and flour and sugar together then pour in the warm milk whisk well and place back in pot stirring on a low heat until you can feel the mixture thicken, allow to cool.

To make the pastry place the dry ingredients in a food processor blix and gradually add the frozen butter a bit at a time.

Lastly, add the egg.

Stop the machine as soon as the dough has formed wrap in cling wrap and place in fridge for about an hour.

To assemble pie, I find it easier to slice the chilled pastry and press it into a cake tin, or if you don’t have one, a heavy cast iron skillet works well.

Spread the gooseberries onto the pastry then pour on the custard bake at 200C for about 20 minutes to half an hour depending on your oven.

The custard will appear wobbly, but will set when chilled.

I prefer this pie cold the next day, maybe that’s because we were so filled up with turkey and Christmas mince pies that we just couldn’t face it on the day.

It’s delicious with fresh cream and ice cream and a sprinkle of icing sugar to compliment the tartness.

Race organiser Sandi Keen says event staff and racers were setting up on shore when they noticed Stephen holding his hand in the air calling for help and raced to the water to assist him.

St John Ambulance was called and transported Stephen to Tauranga Hospital where he was rushed into surgery.

Sandi says he is reported to be recovering well.

Hetaraka Hikurangi Reihana is facing two new charges in relation to the death of the two girls killed in a car crash on Welcome Bay Road on Christmas Day. The 20-year-old Auckland man made a brief appearance in the Tauranga District Court today, where the new charges were discussed, but not declared publicly.

Reihana is remanded on bail with one bail condition that he is not to come to Tauranga unless for court appearances or pre-arranged meetings with his lawyer.

He is next due in court on January 23.

Co-accused, Phillippa Morehu and Haki Davey, are due to appear in court on January 9, and also face manslaughter charges in relation to the crash.

Rain to keep coming

More rain is forecast for the Bay of Plenty this weekend with the New Zealand MetService and WeatherWatch.co.nz both eyeing a tropical low approaching Northland.

The MetService reports there is some uncertainty about the track of the low, but it is likely to bring rain to the north and east of the North Island.

Its early forecasting suggests only a low risk the amount of rain will justify a severe weather warning.

WeatherWatch head analyst Philip Duncan says the rain is expected to peak between Sunday and Tuesday, but it is likely more rain is to follow later next week.

A Thundercat race boat driver is recovering in Tauranga Hospital after an anchor ripped his stomach open during race preparations at Mount Maunganui Beach.

Growing business success Following the joint shocks of Psa and the grounding of the Rena, the Western Bay of Plenty economic revival has stalled.

Westpac Bank’s latest regional economic survey shows confidence took a huge hit in the Bay of Plenty in the quarter to December – slumping well behind all other regions. The report – that balances negative and positive views – rates the areas’ confidence at -46, down from -6 in September, and against a current national average of 6.

In the face of these ongoing tough times, The Weekend Sun spoke with Tauranga business advisor Paul Rowell to find out what key issues Western Bay of Plenty businesses should focus on. It is the start of an occasional series that aims to foster business growth in our region by looking at the keys to building a strong business and celebrating local success.

Paul, who advises small and medium business operators for the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce, regularly comes across similar issues that are holding people back.

He lists the top keys for success as planning, being market driven, effective marketing, supporting and engaging your team, a focus on continual improvement and actively seeking independent advice.

Paul often works with businesses that suffer from poor preparation – something that ultimately ends up costing them with wasted resources and missed opportunities.

“If you don’t have a strategic vision you are just dealing with operations issues. You are just moving the deckchair around, but at the end of the day that’s not going to cut it four or five or six months down the track.”

Paul uses a sporting analogy saying you need to be thinking about the opposition you are up against.

‘Growth pays for growth’ unravels

I agree with Bill Faulkner regarding the transparency of the local council. The councillors should remember they are our servants, voted to their positions by the people. We pay them their high salaries to do a job for us, to make decisions on our behalf, to do so with openness. No employer would tolerate staff having closed door meetings, then staff announcing what they have decided to do, as our council does. Closed doors to the public is NOT ON, it’s arrogance .. Members of the public should, if they wished, sit in on the inception of ideas and listen them out in silence and follow them through to conclusion.

Few would actually turn out but those that do should not be turned away. This is our right as a democratic country and as their employers. Changes must be made.

Discussion of the salaries and pay rises must be approved by the public, meetings with out of town councillors to discuss matters should be held in the council chambers, not over lunches or dinners paid for by the public, this needs to be addressed. The money we pay is to benefit the city and not for the bellies of a certain few. Not popular ideas but good housekeeping.

TCC back flips?

So what is the good news for the 2012 New Year?

Well, for starters we have learned that Smartgrowth has been given a new lease of life when everyone, including most TCC Councillors thought it had died a natural death after being discredited on its flawed ‘growth pays for growth’ and ‘growth for growths sake’ philosophies. But no, here it is larger than life. With no legal standing, it is not even a real entity and is being kept on life-support by those with vested interests in its very existence, just like “a meal ticket”. This time the subject of its affection is local body amalgamation, a la ‘BOP style’!

Then of course there is the Waterfront Redevelopment circus, with TCC trying to work out how to spend $30 million on trees, grass and boardwalks which will be one of life’s little mysteries. However, if you deal to it by instalments and employ a mega-group to do it then it makes life a lot easier to achieve and justify, a la ‘Mount Hot Pools style’!

The Marine Park precinct still lurks in the wings, the Museum zealots are still on the prowl and there is continued leakage of substantial funds (wastage) at the Mount Hot Pools moneyfest.

The one standout positive is with the Jazz Festival headline act drama as it is said most initial tickets are sold with more promised so it is clear the $90,000 Council loan and the $30,000 top-up, both of which were made quite contrary to Council’s own policy, won’t be needed now as the ticket monies banked can be used to pay Earth, Wind and Fire (so no liability there). This means any unauthorised TCC funding can be paid back now or not paid out at all.

Any information on these projects should be readily available from Mayor Crosby or Councillors Molloy and Baldock, as they are rabid supporters of these things little gems.

I refer to the letter of R Paterson(23/12/2011) about the ‘Debt Mountain’, sadly for Tauranga Ratepayers the information provided is only part of what is on the horizon. The cycle of development and house construction resulting in large reductions in fees collected to pay debt have ‘dried up”, yet the debt remains to be paid, the single biggest is the Southern Pipeline, costing $166m+ and the Te Maunga plant upgrade another $160m+.

All of this for outdated technology and prehistoric sewerage treatment that were relics before any pen got to paper. The reasons are: 1. Old technology – at least 20 years out of date 2. Continues with the oxidation pond/

ocean discharge concept 3. Centralised sewerage processing (contrary to TCC’s “node” policy) 4. Incurs large debts based on ‘growth pays for Growth’ a flawed concept that has predictably failed 5. Untreated sewerage traversing city presents unnecessary environmental risk Decisions are deficient from two perspectives: Archaic planning and supervision of projects by applying methods and concepts 20-30 years out of date. Now implemented are locking TCC for the next 50 years; and significant amount of debt incurred without a prudent means to repay it. This year will be looked back upon with significant anguish.

Critically endangered species: TCC ratepayer For years TCC management have cultivated a philosophy that attempts to justify previous large rates increases of about 60% in four years, the reason: “Tauranga’s rates are low compared to other Councils”.

This prophecy feed to TCC staff and Councillors doesn’t stack up. The unavoidable and more important reason that is being kept secret, the “REAL” reason for rate increases is that TCC “MUST increase rates” to keep ahead of the mushrooming debt, this is made a lot worse because non-rate income has dropped so much (2006 $129.8m, 2011 $50.4m) mainly reduced development consent fees received.

TCC have already borrowed or committed to the 2015 debt so the only option to bridge the gap is increase rates, the ratepayer will be sacrificed, it will hurt many ratepayers either way.

Museum costs will fall on ratepayers Support for Vivien

I write to support and comment on the letter by Vivien Worlledge as published on 22 Dec’. I was office manager as well as Vice President of Greypower at the time. I would like to comment on the dedication, efficiency and integrity of Vivien who was the secretary/ treasurer. Her computer skills were excellent as too, her handling of the finances and the eagle eye plus challenges regarding the need of all and any expenditure.

She was also meticulous in submitting the levies due to the federation, based on the affiliation with them of Western Bay Grey Power. Her bookkeeping and financial management must be applauded She was, as a volunteer, not paid, and never hesitated to dig into her own pocket to pay for any extra little aids that would make her job easier and pleasanter. I am horrified to hear of the totally unjust and untruthful accusations made against her by others.

The finances of Grey Power were in good shape and all other records were in excellent order when she resigned, and I too would welcome an independent audit, as this would confirm the above statements provided these records have not in the interim been interfered with!!.

The professionalism of the office and assistance from volunteers was generating an increasing visitation and involvement with the public.

During the two years we were in office I would note that we took the membership from a low of 600 back to 1800. My understand is that this is rapidly falling again. I am not surprised and suggest that the persons responsible need to look at themselves before blaming others.

Greypower ‘distressing’ I am distressed at the downfall of Western Bay of Plenty Greypower. When I resigned I thought I left it in good hands and that with the revived membership of 1800 it was poised to continue to grow and develop.

The public falling out of those who say they have the best interests of the organization at heart is very sad.

I believe the vituperative bitter personal attacks on everyone within range are unacceptable.

I want to say publicly that Viv Worlledge is one of the most honest, hard working and caring peopIe I have met in the voluntary sector.

There is a saying “a good women is above rubies”.

Viv is a good woman.

I would welcome any investigation by an independent qualified accountant or auditor of the accounts and records from my time as President. This would demonstrate we had nothing to hide and much to be proud of.

Museum plans are on the move again, deep within the bowels of City Hall the minions are feverishly working on plans to re-launch this phoenix from the ashes of the 2007 election, voters made it abundantly clear that it was not wanted.

It would seem that City Hall is constantly beseeched by “besotted money seeking locusts” that want public money for what they themselves wouldn’t and don’t contribute to, a good recent example is the Mount Hot Pools where the 2011 Resource Consent failed and cost about $6 million and the reasons were known in 2000 (same as the Museum idea), the Art Gallery was to be “community funded” to but all costs have

fallen on the ratepayer and are added to your rates.

After some serious arm twisting City Hall agreed to provide free land fully consented for a “Community Funded” Museum, Cliff Road has been talked about but isn’t suitable. All indications are that Ratepayers will be lined up to borrow $20 million and more plus annual costs of some $3-4 million. This is not “community funded”, surely some detailed information of where the money to coming from is mandatory here?

This will add to the annual rates bill every year initially by about $90 per household, then increasing.

Confidentiality and things Maori For a change, Mayor Crosby has got it correct on confidentiality (secrecy) regarding negotiations on local Maori Treaty of Waitangi settlement claims, etc. for the Western Bay of Plenty area.

What is there to hide? Tauranga Council should simply have refused to participate in the negotiations or discussions if Tauranga citizens are not to be kept informed because that is what breeds suspicion and contempt for pre-determined outcomes and rightly so.

Unnecessary run ups dragging out cricket Re: The fast bowlers in cricket.

Why do they have to run so far to bowl a ball?

They could bowl just as fast if they halved their distance as they would be much fitter at the end of each day, and saving much energy. For example, most fast bowlers run 40 metres or so for each bowl, times six for an over, equals 240 metres, and say eight overs per day, equals 8 x 240, 1920 metres, at say 12 overs per day – equals 2880 metres!

That could be halved if the bowlers’ run ups were only 20 metres or so. When watching on TV those long run-ups are so energy sapping and quite ridiculous.

Why do the coaches not look into this habit and check it out? Also rubbing the ball smooth as the opposite effect of gripping the crease for a spin bowl! It should be left rough.

A new year already; I’m still getting over the last one Perhaps it was because New Year’s Eve was so damp, but it didn’t really seem like the expected party, and I didn’t have the all-terrain vehicle needed to make it to the Exodus Festival in Papamoa.

But I’ve had reports and it sounds like the event was a fantastic end to one year and start to another. I take my hat off to Tim Cooper and all others involved

in the initiative – this was a big call for the Bay and it was inspiring to see them remain undaunted by whatever the heavens could throw at them on the day.

The fact that we can now have a legitimate New Year’s Eve music festival here represents a strong step forward for the area after over a decade of official paranoia about any sort of celebration that could attract “the wrong element”. It all started with the somewhat out of control millennium bash on the Mount beach and led to liquor bans and the outlawing of anything that breached the “fun for all

the family” straightjacket.

I can only imagine the council hoops the Exodus Festival had to jump through – but I’m very glad they did.

It now seems like a long time since Christmas, but I’d like to start this year by hoping you had a happy one.

I hope the day was kind to you, the presents plentiful, the food delicious, the company loving, and the hangover sufferable.

Things worked out very nicely here at the Watusi Country Club – amidst the daiquiris and dancing girls – when my partner was given a present that immediately became a favourite of mine too.

My partner likes products.

Specifically, extravagant beautification products: cosmetics for the stars. This works out well for both of us, since she likes to apply them while I like to study and laugh at them (though usually out of earshot and to myself).

The endless contortions of the beauty industry as they attempt to sell increasingly obscure creations that no one previously knew they ever needed or wanted provide simple but satisfying entertainment for bears with very small brains such as myself, and this new arrival immediately catapulted to third

on my mental list of Best Beauty Products Eva! (The exclamation mark comes with the list, not the sentence.)

It emerges from that fine cosmetic producer Molton Brown and is called Celestial Maracuja Body Soufflé. I wanted to eat it with a cheese sauce but it’s really not that sort of soufflé. It will, however, “leave the skin supremely velvety,

exotically scented and sumptuously soft.” If it does that, whatever it costs, it’s worth more.

And it should do something, since I note from the box that it contains hydrogenated ethylhexyl olivate, cetearyl glucoside, hydroxyethyl acrylate/sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer, squalane, and polysorbate 60. And that’s a mere two lines from the nine lines of ingredients...

Still, it’s not my absolute favourite.

Third only. In second place is the

elegantly named Aveda Tourmaline Charged Radiance Fluid, which “refines skin texture to reveal radiance”. And I think we can all agree that a little radiance never goes amiss. Why, only this morning, I was looking in the mirror a tad concerned about my apparent lack of radiance. Fortuitously, the back of the bottle suggests you “use daily for amplified radiance” and I think that was my problem – through lack of regular use my radiance had remained stubbornly unamplified. It is, I am told, a pre-moisturiser, though why you would want to immediately hide your radiance under a moisturiser escapes me.

The Best Product Eva! – officially from my years of exhaustive research – wins the title purely by virtue of its name. It is weird-smelling and black and I have no idea what it does or how to apply it. It is Coffee & Spice Citrus Sugar Body Polish Oil Gel. I don’t think with a name like that it matters much what you do with it. Just standing and reading the label probably has conditioning benefits. I certainly feel better knowing that it’s up there on the shelf should I suddenly need a Body Polish Oil Gel (or even just a spicy cup of coffee).

Boosting your future music career Thirty-two year old Jeff Kildare is serious about his music – he lives and breathes it and is passionate about helping upcoming young artists to make their mark on the world.

Until recently, Jeff was studying music production and performance full-time at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. A choice, he says, he just had to make.

“I’d toyed with the idea of doing some study for a while,” says Jeff.

“And hearing from Polytech grads about how fantastic the tutors were, I thought I would go for it.”

Jeff says he was pretty surprised at just how great the environment at the Polytechnic was.

“I totally wasn’t expecting it to be such a cool, creative environment.

“I thought it was going to be good, but it really surprised me with the quality of the tutoring and the

equipment – it’s a fantastic atmosphere to be in.”

Now he’s graduated with his diploma, Jeff is setting his sights on starting his own recording studio and equipment hire business with

Jeff Kildare. partner Melissa Vanderspek and help from fellow graduate, Chris Ramage.

“There aren’t a lot of avenues out

there for young and upcoming acts getting out and doing their thing.

“I hope that we can provide them with a vehicle to deliver a fresh package by using both the skills we’ve learnt through previous experience in the industry and the added knowledge provided by the Polytech music programme.

“There is no doubt in my mind that the Polytech has taken me from a semi-serious musician playing some gigs, to someone who has the necessary skills, knowledge and network to participate in many aspects of the music industry today. I am a far better, all round musician than I was two years ago.”

The best of 2011 Part 1 Another year begins and – as is traditional – I’ve been trawling through memories of last year’s viewing: the things on DVD and Blu-ray that have stuck in my mind.

The biggest development through 2011 was the blossoming of 3D. There are now 3D Blu-rays out there (for people who have the requisite equipment) but the real change came from the way action movies are now being filmed. Gone is the fast-cutting addiction typified by the Bourne movies, where fights are just a blur of one second close-ups – quick cuts look rubbish in 3D. For the most striking example of this change is between the third Transformers film and the first two. The film itself is again rubbish, but it looks sensational. The action unfolds in long unbroken takes, making the last 40 minutes the most exciting of the year.

But, on to the films. Let’s start at the beginning of the year, when last year’s Oscar nominees were released on home video... ...and a pretty good bunch they were too.

The following swag were all nominated – even if they failed to pick up statuettes – and all are very rewarding viewing: My favourite is still The Social Network, which is simply so well-made and written that it merits repeat viewing. The opening scene where Mark Zuckerman is dumped by his (fictitious) girlfriend is a masterclass in itself and the broader questions of society’s changing methods of communication continue to resonate.

The Kings Speech and True Grit are both perfect examples of quality genre filmmaking, the first a Triumph-Over-Adversity tale with royal stuffiness appealingly punctured, the latter a pitch-perfect western, featuring the turn that really should have netted Bridges the Oscar (but Colin Firth should

Black Swan was lurid and, in retrospect, a bit silly, but featured a great quartet of women’s performances and stunning dance cinematography; Winter’s Bone was just the opposite, the model of minimalist storytelling but absolutely gripping, exploring the unseen backwoods of the Appalachian mountains.

The year’s best comedy? Well, for me, nothing came along that topped Four Lions, which managed to be unlike any other comedy, taking on, as it did, the threat of terrorism in England with a quartet of the most misguided jihadists in history who, despite their absolute stupidity, managed to be both dangerous and alarmingly likeable. Other comedies – The Hangover 2, Bridesmaids, Horrible Bosses – seemed timid and formulaic in comparison, though hats off to Jennifer Aniston for her fearless turn in the latter.

Funnier than most live action films were the ever-increasing number of animated films, the best of which was Cars 2. Given that the original was the red-headed stepchild of the Pixar opus, this sequel really knocked it out of the park, creating a whole new story, incorporating clever spy spoof elements, and adding the always welcome Michael Caine to the cast. It also looks – unsurprisingly – simply fantastic. The other

animated film that rocked my world was Rango, an odd proposition given that it was a parody western (borrowing plot elements from Chinatown!) not really aimed at kids, featuring the year’s best voice work from Johnny Depp. Like Cars 2 it heaps in so much subtle detail that a second viewing is almost obligatory.

That’ll do for this week. Next time I’ll move on to documentaries, biopics, family films, foreign outings and all those other tasty treats that made the long winter nights just fly by.

Live & Serve in the Power of the Holy Spirit

New horizons are before us as a city and nation for 2012. Choices and decisions are ours to be made.

God is watching over us as he is our heavenly Father and we are the flock of his pasture. Love drops of the Father’s love are falling on hearts that are seeking.

The shadows of the past fade into yesterday. Memories and experiences of last year can help shape us for the coming year – wisdom to be gained and grief to be healed, unfulfilled dreams yet to be accomplished.

God’s word says he will let all “grace abound to you”.

In Romans he says that the God, who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were, ordains our footsteps.

Grace is God’s gift of love to us through Jesus Christ.

We can’t earn this love only welcome and accept Jesus Christ as our saviour and Lord.

Hope and faith come though Jesus Christ for us to abound in, in the coming year.

We all need legends and heroes of the past to inspire and motivate us to great levels of intimacy and the pursuit of the Father’s love, but we need faith in something bigger than ourselves to see us through to the other side of the storms of life.

If we only have faith in ourselves or other people we will only be as strong as their human capacity of endurance will enable.

We need to have faith in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, His living word and the power of the Holy Spirit, then our faith will be one of miracles, signs and wonders.

Mountains in our circumstances will be removed and missions accomplished throughout the coming year.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever!

This is a season that the Father’s heart is going to be revealed throughout the nations.

I believe this is a year to come into greater intimacy of relationship with the King of Kings. To abandon one’s self and abide in the inner chambers of the king’s heart.

The fire of God is in his heart so do not be a coal on the outside that will burn out and be lifeless.

No, come into the chambers of His heart and experience His great love for you that will release and increase the power of His glory that will cover the earth through you.

Let the love drops of the Father’s love wash over you, refreshing you with His presence, that you will then seek and see His glorious face and walk in His ways.

Let our prayer for our city and nation be “Lord may your kingdom come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven”.

Hope for 2012 In Luke 21, Jesus is speaking to his disciples about events at the end of this age and he speaks in verse 26 about “people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world”.

This new year ahead of us is more than just a new year. It is the year that Hollywood portrayed in an “endof-world” apocalyptic film, that Nostradamus prophesied in the 16th century was the year the world would end, which is a conviction held by some false religions and some scientists. A little more specific, the Mayan calendar predicts

December 21 this year as the end of the world.

There are widespread ‘doom and gloom’ expectations for 2012 that include significant cataclysmic events, the world’s resources running out, stars and planets and meteors colliding and other earth shattering worldwide events including World War III beginning this year.

Ignoring what is being said from that kind of prophetic viewpoint and by simply observing world events, including the global economic meltdown and the events in the Middle-East, and the advancement of strategies for global government and a global monetary system, it is clear these are perilous times.

Just by observing what is happening with earthquakes and tsunamis and floods and crop failures, with wars and rumours of wars, and with nuclear proliferation, most people

are aware of the fragility of the day and hour in which we live.

And it is easy to understand this in the context of biblical prophecy as the time when Jesus speaks of about “people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world”.

But in a time of what is hopelessness to many, those who are genuine followers of Christ have hope. Biblical hope is a steady, serene expectation of good that is founded in Christ.

Dear reader, as you face this new year, do you face it with fear or with hope?

Scripture says in Ephesians 2:12 that those outside of a genuine, living relationship with Jesus as Lord and Saviour are separated from Christ and are outside the covenants of promises of God concerning salvation.

We invite you to join with us at Jesus First as we face 2012 in a steady, expectation of good in the hope of God.
