Free advice, whether you asked or not Lifejacket laws and pool fencing continue to be contentious issues among New Zealanders as we dive into summer.

As another tragic story unfolds in the news this week, the water safety debates are more emotional than ever.

Some argue, bylaws forcing the wearing of lifejackets, as proposed in Auckland, won’t actually prevent drownings.

Critics say the rules suit bureaucrats and not the public; and the lifejacket law will go the same way as compulsory bike helmets, fencing paddling pools, and anti-smacking laws – good in theory, but ineffectual in practice, hopeless to police and makes criminals of many sensible New Zealanders just going about their daily lives.

One of the issues, particularly the lifejacket saga – is the inconsistency. We now have so many different variations of it from region to region, that boaties are confused.

Here in the Bay of Plenty, the water safety rules are pretty standard, as set out by Maritime NZ. Yet just over the border in the Waikato region, they’re a lot more draconian with compulsory wearing rules for boats under six metres; and they even insist on all boats being named or numbered.

Pimp my regulations

Boaties are a fairly transient bunch, often cruising or towing their boats from region to region, coast to lake.

Probably not while you’re actually reading it. Although hopefully, after reading it, you will then not drown. Here’s how reading this paper could save your life: This newspaper goes free to 64,180 homes, of about 159,700 people.

It’s the widest circulating paper in the region. It’s also the most popular with Nielsen surveys rating it the most read newspaper in the Bay. New Zealand is a country of four million, with an average of 120 drownings a year. That means one in about 33,000 of you will drown.

The rates are higher in the Bay, due to us being a coastal region with great climate and a lot of water activities. We lost six last year, and 16 the year before that. Statistically, our drowning rate is three or four times’ the rest of the country. However, our probability is hugely reduced if we take a few measures to avoid being in ‘the draw.’

Given that the good people at Nielsen rate us with at least 71,000 readers each week (the most in the Bay), then statistically, three or four of you each year are drowners… Unless…we all do something about it! danger. Others have wishy washy versions that wearing is required when conditions “present an increased risk.” (By the time you realise, it’s probably too late!). Others have exemptions for when the skipper says it’s okay to not wear. Oh dear.

If the rules were consistent across the country, that would be a great step forward. And basically they were, until various other regions started pimping their regulations.

Another answer

This works: wear a buoyancy aid all the time. It could be my upbringing as a white water fanatic, when a buoyancy aid was a constant essential and it has become as much an everyday part of life as pulling on underwear.

(Except, of course, in those commando situations when a boatie wears a buoyancy aid and no underwear).

If you get the right sort, it’s an incredibly handy garment with pockets and zips to carry everything from a good knife, water and fishing gear, VHF and EPIRB, hat, sunglasses, duck caller, or whatever.

The bonus in winter – they’re really warm.

But for the great majority of boaties, wearing a lifejacket is seen as some kind of imposition. A restriction. A chore.

They don’t consider it a useful device with lifesaving benefits – just another annoyance that some bastard is forcing upon them.

Really though, it comes down to personal responsibility. You either want to increase your chances of surviving, or just continue with head-in-sand, thinkng you’ll never need it. Most of you will be right, most of the time.

Natural selection at work, I guess.

Some say, why do we care? Others are hell bent on protecting people, whether they want to be saved or not. It’s just a matter of how far society wants to dabble in trying to save people from themselves.

I reckon part of the answer is with family; help push the message. Buy them a fitting jacket. Nag them to wear it. A good one is a useful one. You could buy them basic, cheap, uncomfortable and cumbersome emergency-only pieces – which also means the boat is street-legal, but they are not the sort of things any fisho is going to wear all the time. They’re more likely to be shoved in a dark damp corner, and thought about when it’s too late. Whereas a well-fitting, quality jacket that is sleek and comfortable, will become second nature to wear – every outing.

These days you can get a good manual inflating jacket for under a hundie. Or a jacket-style with as many pockets as you need. Hell, you can even get them in camo, if you don’t want to be found!

Make it the top priority for your family this summer. Let’s not lose any more readers. That’s my free advice. Thank me for it later. brian@thesun.co.nz

Where credit’s due

Maritime NZ is taking credit for engaging the Bay of Plenty community in the volunteer clean-up of oil-fouled beaches following the Rena disaster in October 2011 – but the volunteers involved in the early stages have a different story.

It took quite a push to get MNZ to accept volunteers in the first place, and it was a good week after Mount Maunganui’s ocean beach was first coated in heavy fuel oil from the Rena that Maritime New Zealand accepted volunteers as part of the relief effort.

In the review of MNZ’s response to the grounding of the containership Rena on Astrolabe Reef on October 5, 2011, the volunteer effort is credited with cleaning the beaches more effectively and cheaper than using heavy machinery.

“In the beginning, they [MNZ] were slow because they didn’t have a precedent for it,” says Mount Maunganui volunteer Dave Richards. “They really got forced into it [allowing volunteers to help] by the weight of public opinion.”

Dave initiated the night rescue teams that brought in more than 300 oiled penguins from Mount

Maunganui, and Moturiki and Motuotau islands in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.

And he’s still involved, monitoring the wildlife, and the beaches. But in the early stages, MNZ had to be pushed hard to accept help from the locals.

“From my perspective, it was an evolving thing.

They had never hit this before and they had to find their way through it. And though it was messy at times and they were pushed at times, I know we pushed them and forced them to look at new options.

“It was just a matter of them finding their way forward.”

Independent reviewer Simon Murdoch’s assessment of the Rena response, released this week, reports that by the end of the public clean up, the volunteers were an effective multiplier to the official response and were recognised as essential to the response.

International maritime organisations have since shown considerable interest in the volunteer regime and how it worked.

Farewell for Merivale man

Merivale man Lance Scullin has been farewelled in a memorial service attended by family, friends and members of the community.

The 50-year-old father was found dead in the backyard of his home in Merivale last Sunday.

Police say he was assaulted with a fence paling while trying to break up a dispute between youth and members of the public outside his house about 10pm Saturday, November 30. Police believe the assault and death are not directly linked.

Lance, a security guard and Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator, is described by family as a “caring man who always put the community first”.

Lance grew up in the Hawke’s Bay before moving to Tauranga more than 10 years ago, and along with his security-based skills had a passion as a painter and decorator, as well as being a loving father.

Payout over bullying claim

A Tauranga doctor, who claims he was bullied in the workplace, is to receive $7500 from the BOP District Health Board after it was found he was unjustifiably dismissed.

The Employment Relations Authority has ordered the DHB to pay psychologist Dr Paul Hirini for breaching its obligations in investigating the complaint he was bullied.

Berm fines slammed A Tauranga resident is slamming Tauranga City Council’s decision to slap motorists with a $40 berm parking fine in an attempt to preserve infrastructure and environmental amenities.

In recent months, numerous ‘Do not park behind the kerb’ signs have been erected on many streets in the Cliff Rd and Willow St area, limiting available spaces for free parking.

Monmouth St resident Lee-Anne Knaggs says with no parking allowed past the kerb the city council is targeting vulnerable motorists, who are unfamiliar with the rules or fail to see the signage at $40 a time.

“It’s a white pole; and where they have put the pole at the end of the grass verge, it’s not very clear in the centre,” says Lee-Anne.

Of particular concern to Lee-Anne is when athletic days are held at the Tauranga Domain, with parents and schools to be fined for parking on the berms or yellow lines while at the event.

When The Weekend Sun spoke to LeeAnne about six cars were seen parked on the berm, including a local primary school van, offering the council a chance to collect $240 in parking fines.

“Every time there is a sports day at the domain, they ticket the parents,” says Lee-Anne. “I can see the cars today [on the berm], and there are six there now.”

But TCC roading manager Martin Parkes disputes Lee-Anne’s concerns, saying on Monmouth St alone there are about distinctive 10 signs while council is providing sufficient parking at the Cliff Rd carpark.

The carpark opened in July and was expected to include the former berm parkers in Monmouth St, Park St and Brown St, who continue to try to flaunt the law.

Crowds run Mauao for Mundy

As 10-year-old Harrison Mundy undergoes radiotherapy at Auckland’s Starship Hospital he is supported by hundreds of runners who tackled Mauao to raise money for the youngster this week.

Groups of theme-clad youngsters from Harrison’s Omanu school and surf life saving clubs were joined by councillors, lifesavers, community members and keen runners, all ready for an early morning mad dash up the Mount.

Growth in population diversity

The Bay of Plenty’s population is growing more ethnically diverse but home ownership in the region has decreased while dwelling numbers have increased, according to newly-released 2013 Census data.

The 2013 Census results show 17.3 per cent of the Bay of Plenty’s population was born overseas.

This is up 2.4 percentage points since 2006.

The mild New Zealand winter might have been a blessing for many cold-weary Kiwis but it could feel more like a curse come summer – thanks to a surge in mosquitoes and other biting insects.

This winter has been the warmest on record for New Zealand, which means numerous species of insects that are typically decimated by frigid temperatures will survive through spring and summer with unusually large populations, says Bay of Plenty Medical Officer of Health Dr Neil de Wet. Neil says mosquitoes, which lay their eggs in water, will have thrived this year, thanks to lots of rainfall combined with the unseasonably balmy weather.

“The good news about mosquitoes in New Zealand is that we don’t have any mosquitoes that carry any serious diseases.

“From a public health point of view, a lot of our focus is ensuring that we keep mosquitoes from overseas out of the country, the new species that can carry disease.”

Neil says there is a monitoring programme at the port, so if anything enters it can be detected.

“But for the public, one of the most important things that can be done, because mosquitoes can be a real nuisance, is reducing their breeding sites around your home. Pot plants, for example; make sure they don’t offer any water for mosquitoes to breed, you can fill

Sharing the saddle Like father, like son – George Mills has always loved following closely in the trail of his father Tim. This Sunday, the eight-year-old will do it again – pairing up with his father for the second year to compete together in the Tinman Triathlon on a tandem bike.

Mount Avanti Plus owner Tim, who used his cycle expertise to build a tandem for the pair, describes himself as a consistent mid-pack finisher in his class. But last year he surprised himself when he and George finished third in the male 30-34 class in their first time pairing together.

“I certainly wasn’t expecting to do so well,” says Tim, who was keen to get cycle-mad George involved.

“He loves getting out on the bike and having a ride with me, so the organisers kindly gave him a dispensation to compete with me in my class.”

George and Tim run the 5km section together, then tandem the 20km cycle.

“He’s pretty light, so I hardly notice him on the tandem” says Tim, who is left to do the 750m swim alone.

“The crowd really got

behind him last year, and he was high-fiving everyone.”

Joining Tim and George on a tandem this year is Tauranga triathlon stalwart Sandra Boubee, who is partnering blind Wellington Paralympic swimming star Mary Fisher as a guide along the route.

Sandra, who jokes about competing in more triathlons than she can remember, is excited about supporting Mary, with the two tethered together around the course. Sandra, who has been training for the longer distance Taupo Ironman, did not plan on competing in the Mount event herself.

“It’s a good way of being involved,” says Sandra, who after only one ride on a tandem believes the larger bike will be the biggest challenge.

“It’s completely different – you have to go wide around the corners like you’re towing a trailer.”

The Tinman Triathlon is on Sunday, December 8 with racing beginning at Pilot Bay at 8am with the Standard class.

Surf battle at speed Cover story

With their bodies and IRBs finely tuned, Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club’s best IRB racers will line-up against the rest of the North Island, hosting this weekend’s BP Surf Rescue North Island Championships.

For the next two days, 48 North Island IRB crews will race across both sand and water at Papamoa Beach

for club points and bragging rights in tube rescues, mass rescues and an open team’s race at the annual event.

Papamoa IRB team manager Shane Smith is enthusiastic heading into the weekend, as this is the first time Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club has hosted an event on such a large scale.

“We are very excited and nervous at the same time, to make sure it goes to plan.

“Not only do we want to make it a success for the surf life saving community, but to make sure the competitors

have the best chance possible.

In a surprise move, Papamoa is the sole club from Tauranga, with neither Mount Maunganui nor Omanu entering the event. But Shane says with the spotlight firmly on his club there is no place they would rather be.

Papamoa boasts a squad of eight teams throughout the divisions, broken down into premier, senior, women’s and under 21 crews, and is already determined to aim higher than 2012’s fifth placing with four teams.

“We have two premier teams who are the elite, three men’s teams, one women’s team for the first time and two under 21 teams.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to bring a heap of homegrown talent through. Last year we have four and this year we have eight; and that’s a testament to the high calibre of coaching from Justin Martin.”

Shane says with Justin’s intensive four sessions a week training schedule, the squad is primed and ready to go along with an extra two sessions on Saturday and Sunday.

Racing begins in front of the Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club from 10am this Saturday and 9am this Sunday in what Shane expects to be a great weekend of fast and exhilarating racing.

Adult savers sought A rise in adult volunteer surf lifeguards is providing a healthy balance for the Mount Surf Club this season.

And with summer officially here, club officials are encouraging more adults and parents to get their Surf Lifeguard Award.

Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service general manager Glenn Bradley says the vast majority of their lifeguards generally come through from the youth ranks. “But what we have seen in the last couple of years is a good number come through as adults and as parents when their children start getting involved.

“At the moment, we have a mix really of parents and adults keen to get their award, so we’re just looking to see if there is a few more around to see if we can boost that training group.”

While passionate about training young lifeguards, Glenn says the adult numbers create good balance.

“You also get that maturity and a slightly different skill set that adults and parents bring.”

With 20 new lifeguards already qualified this season, Mount Surf Club is increasing its patrol numbers from six to seven for the first time.

“It means each lifeguard has a couple of days less to commit to patrolling.”

Attaining a Surf Lifeguard Award requires training in practical and theory-related tasks. An exam must be passed, which comprises of a 400metre pool swim in less than nine minutes, a run/swim/run in the surf, a resuscitation test, rescue test, theory questions, and a practical surf knowledge test.

Dirt trail’s star After years of playing around on dirt bikes, it all changed for Shelby and Kydd Catley when their neighbour asked them along to a motocross event last year.

“If I had of known,” says mum Nicky Mulvaney, “that was the beginning of the end,” she laughs.

Kydd, now 13, ended up in hospital after two falls during races at the Youngson Rd track – showing a determination to win the pair have both become renowned for.

Starting motocross at age 12 put Kydd in the higher level of competition against many experienced riders, whereas Shelby, now 11, has been quicker to make her mark in the seven-11 year trail class.

During the last month, the Year 7 pupil has collected a hat-trick of top titles – rounding out the competitive season with wins at the Huka Honda Labour Weekend Extravaganza in Taupo, the KTM NZ

Motocross Nationals in North Harbour and the Auckland Championships.

“Shelby knows what she’s doing, she’s got a plan – she absolutely loves winning and is determined to go a lot further.”

Nicky says it is only after Shelby returned from her first interschool competition last year with a trophy they realised she had quite a talent.

“A few people had said she had something special, but we hadn’t taken much notice.”

The family passion for riding prompted them to shift to a property in Pahoia, which has been set up with its own track where Shelby and Kydd push each other to the limit.

“They absolutely love it – they’re out there whenever they can. Even after the nationals, the first thing she wanted to do when we got home was to get out there.”

Shelby is now stepping up into the tougher 11-12 85cc class, with her focus on training for the iconic Summercross event Awakaponga on December 28. For mum, the focus is on finding sponsors to help.

Jet ski enthusiasts will be making a splash this weekend as they ride around Matakana Island.

The Tauranga Jet Sport Association is encouraging anyone with a jet ski to join in a social ride around Matakana Island on Sunday called The Matakana Classic.

TJSA secretary Rob Larman says the group gets together once a month to ride some of Bay of Plenty’s finest waterways. “[It’s] just to get a like-minded group of people out and enjoying what they do. [It’s] also exploring some different waterways that people might not have been to in the past.”

“It’s a great way to meet new people who share the same interest with you,” says Rob. “If you’re new to jet skiing it’s a great way to learn about the rules and also the craft.”

According to Rob, jet skiers don’t often hold the best reputation with some people, which is why the group tries to promote safe and responsible riding.

“A part of club is to promote safe use of jet skis,” says Rob. “So a life jacket is a must have on our rides.”

Jet skiers must bring sunscreen, and a lifejacket, says Rob. “Other than that, just bring a sense of humour and a willingness to meet new people and have a good time.”

The Te Puke Art Society is saying goodbye to current president Annette Webber this month.

Annette has been a member of the society for 11 years and president for seven. Member Kill Batty says its Annette’s hard work and organisational ability that has seen smooth running of the society and its activities and exhibitions.

“Her tireless work on behalf of the society has certainly benefitted the club.”

Annette was presented with the Margaret White Trophy last weekend as a thank you for her efforts.

Work has begun upgrading Omokoroa’s esplanade carpark, which is due for completion mid-December. It’s likely the work will cost more than an estimated $100 000, but negotiations with the contractor will bring the amount down slightly, according to the Omokoroa Community Board’s December agenda.

Urgency to have the work finished prior to Christmas saw a decision made to proceed, with an increase in funding sought, to be about $25,000.

Variety show boasts big talent Greerton is set to come alive in the spirit of Christmas tonight with a community Christmas show which organisers believe has the potential to become Tauranga’s Christmas in the Park.

After being traditionally run at Greerton Village Square, the Greerton Village Christmas Variety Show is shifting to the nearby school for tonight’s concert to cater for more people and attractions.

Greerton Village Mainstreet manager Victoria Thomas, who is organising the show, says the square has become too cramped for the event and couldn’t cope with extra attractions on offer this year.

“It’s a great family evening out really. Think a picnic on the field, plenty of entertainment and all for a good cause; there really isn’t anything else like it to hail in the festive season.”

Victoria says she is expecting a large turnout

this year, with performers including Tauranga’s own ‘New Zealand’s Got Talent’ star Calista Gray, along with Japanese drumming and steel pan groups, acrobats and assorted performers from Greerton Village School.

To add to the community festival feel there will be food stalls, street performers, face painters and balloon artists.

“Holding it at the school gives us a lot more scope to build on the family atmosphere and achieve our goal of making it Tauranga’s version of Christmas in the Park,” says Victoria.

In keeping with the Christmas spirit, entry to the concert is by a donation of non-perishable food item for the Tauranga Food Bank.

“It’s the second year we’ve done this and a great way to help make a small difference for those in need.”

Greerton Village School teacher Caroline Taylor-Levey, who recently ran the Greerton Village School’s Got Talent competition, says pupils put a lot into the event and are looking forward to performing for the community. The concert at the school grounds starts 6pm.

Falling education results alarm principal A Tauranga principal is calling for increases in vital teaching time instead of ministerial data collecting in the wake of New Zealand’s significant drop in global education achievement.

Data released in the latest OECD report shows NZ’s education ranking fell from seventh to 13th in reading, 13th to 23rd in maths, and from seventh to 18th in science – confirming a gradual slide occurring since the early 2000s.

The 2012 Programme for International Student Assessment study, carried out every three years, compares the performance of about 500,000 15 year olds from 65 countries or economies across reading, literacy, maths and science subjects.

Of 59,000 15 year olds in New Zealand schools in 2012, about 4000 students took part in the PISA assessment.

Western Bay of Plenty Principal Association president Robert Hyndman is disappointed to see NZ’s education system plummet, despite conceding other countries are making progress.

“We want to be moving up and we don’t want to be static. Some of the initiatives that are supposed to help children are getting in the way.

“To me, it’s disappointing that there has been so much emphasis on data collecting and measuring children rather than actually testing them.

Education Minister Hekia Parata says the results show NZ continuing to perform above the OECD average, but that more extensive work needs to be done.

“The results confirm that our students who are achieving at the highest level are comparable to the best in the world – but the whole education system needs to be better geared to support all of our students to succeed.”

Hekia says the decline in performance is the result of

a combination of long-standing system issues, including the bedding of a new NZ curriculum, a significant increase in the number of teachers, but underinvestment in raising teaching practice and a focus on compliance rather than system performance.

But Robert says the results may come as a wake-up call to the Ministry of Education, with the overemphasis on assessments leaving teachers with little time to teach.

“Don’t get me wrong assessments are good, but assessments that just give data for the ministry and data for the purpose of teaching.

“If teachers were freed up to be more involved in teaching and getting children to the next step, rather than data; that’s what we find better.”

The newly-elected council has made a great start to the new triennium, with excellent ability and experience at the council table.

Six new councillors, and eight returning, make up the 14 – which is one more than the last triennium, with Tauranga being allocated another position due to the city’s population growth.

Overall, we have a good blend of experience and enthusiasm to represent the communities of the Bay of Plenty. After a few weeks of meeting some of the leaders across the region, I’m heartened by the commitment to work together for the betterment of the whole region. Funding from parties, such as government, trusts and charities, can be better sourced.

Council amalgamation in hiding

Councils are just starting to emerge from behind the amalgamation and unitary authority shelter sheds.

Western Bay of Plenty District councillor Don Thwaites, during the October local body elections, acknowledged in that his council has been talking about amalgamation for three years and one of his main aims is to bring the discussion out to the public. He has been totally silent on the subject since, and later avoided answering any questions on the topic. Apparently, his friends didn’t appreciate his talking dirty.

The Coromandel electorate has the second highest percentage of 64-plus year olds in the country. We also have the highest percentage of residents in the 50-64 years age bracket, which means during the next few decades, our senior population will become even greater when the large population of baby boomers reaches retirement.

So I was delighted to welcome the Honourable Jo Goodhew to Katikati last week. The Minister for Senior Citizens, Minister for the Voluntary and Community Sector and Associate Health Minister met with members of the senior community at the Katikati War Memorial Hall and we enjoyed some lively discussion.

Our aging population presents challenges Government, both at a national and a local level, as well as those who work in the area of elderly care.

A wildfire in the CBD It shows that even after facing a wildfire of issues, the strong have survived and opportunities have appeared for new growth to develop.

Representatives from the CBD challenged Council at our briefing this week to show leadership in resurrecting the once strong city centre.

Fresh growth has sprouted in the CBD with the new commercial buildings and the three co-working spaces. These spaces host self-employed professionals who want to work with similar minded people in a professional setting (as opposed to their garage or dining room).

I’m emphasising that even city centres go through natural cycles to refresh themselves. This leads to fascinating opportunities to discover your next favourite cafe, boutique shop, or a hot new underground place to impress your date.

Council needs to facilitate the key players in the CBD to work together. About 6000 people work in our city centre; meaning it’s the region’s economic and cultural heart. It is the CBD’s challenge to get these professionals out of their

offices and onto the streets.

The nature of city centres is changing across the world. Some businesses will relish the evolving opportunities; other businesses may not be suited for the CBD over time.

If we want a resurrected CBD, we need to treat people as people, not just as consumers. People need places to meet, talk, sit, play, stroll, flirt, read, dine, peoplewatch, soak in sunshine and to express themselves.

Our CBD is looking to provide attractive things that cannot be done or bought online or at suburban shopping malls.

The CBD should also welcome the proposed university and hotel by creating safe and intimate walkways connecting people to the waterfront through the retail area.

Auckland has trialed shared spaces in their CBD (e.g. Fort Street) where cars give way to pedestrians.

The retailers resisted at first, but they were happy after two years. Foot traffic grew quickly, overall satisfaction and safety increased, and consumer spending was up.

People will pay to go to a place if it’s worth going too. Instead of asking how cheap we can make it to get people into the CBD (e.g. parking), let’s make the CBD a great destination that people don’t hesitate to visit.

Special Olympians haul in medals Tauranga’s Special Olympians are returning home victorious after winning an impressive 51 medals at the National Summer Games in Dunedin.

The 46-strong team from Tauranga went up against 1100 other talented Kiwis, proving that many are at the top of their game in the six codes.

Athletes from Tauranga won 21 gold, 18 silver and 12 bronze medals in the six codes of swimming, athletics, Ten Pin bowling,

Push for summer safety on the water Summer is officially here and a Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard is urging families to keep safe on the water this season.

Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard operations manager Simon Barker says the coastguard vessel TECT Rescue attends to about 150 rescues each year from basic breakdowns and flat batteries to more extreme cases including deaths.

Simon is offering the same advice he does all-year-round.

“Make sure you let someone know where you are going, make sure you’ve got a VHF radio on-board

and check the weather forecast,” says Simon. “And don’t forget the lifejackets.”

On Sunday, the coastguard vessel, and Maketu’s Eastpak Rescue saved an owner and three passengers from a launch which broke down near Motiti Island.

Simon believes the passengers onboard the 12-metre launch were out fishing when the launch’s propeller stopped working.

That same day the coastguard vessel also attended an incident involving three kayakers reported to have gotten into difficulty off Plummers Point, near Omokoroa, in the upper Tauranga Harbour.

Holiday reminder of restraint laws Parents and caregivers are being reminded to make sure they are applying the new car restraint rules at all times.

During the summer, adults might be looking after children, not their own, who now require a restraint when travelling in a vehicle.

Here’s a reminder of the new rules, if the child is:

• Under seven years old - The child must be properly restrained in an appropriate child restraint.

• Aged seven years old - The child must be properly restrained by an approved and appropriate child restraint if one is available.

If no appropriate child restraint is available, they must use a safety belt.

• Aged eight to 14 years old The child must use a safety belt if available. If not available, the child

must be in the back seat.

• Aged 15 years and over - The teen must wear a safety belt when available.

If you don’t own a child restraint, you can hire an approved one from a Plunket Car Seat Service in your area.

As we draw closer to high summer, it’s important to remember the basics in keeping you and your family safe from the sun.

A few minutes early in the morning or late afternoon is just enough for growing children, who need the sun to produce Vitamin D that maintains healthy bones and organs.

Children can burn quickly because their skin is so delicate. Over exposure to UV light or sunburn can lead to long term skin damage and higher risk of skin cancer later in life.

Babies, however, should be kept in the shade at all times.

A hat is a must, with a recommended minimum 7cm brim, or flaps to cover the neck, as well as clothes that cover the arms, legs and body.

If your baby is spending time in their stroller or buggy, remember to cover it and protect them from direct sunlight, making sure air can still circulate through so they don’t get too hot.

Tips to achieve a fabulous looking garden It’s time for long days at the beach, barbecues on the deck, picnics in the park – and endless amounts of fun in the summer sun.

Outdoor entertaining becomes a big part of the festive season and there is still plenty of time to get your garden looking fantastic.

Give the garden a tidy up in preparation for Christmas entertaining by cutting back untidy shrubs, weeding flower beds and cleaning mould and

dirt from paving and decks using a water blaster and a stiff broom.

Why not grow one of the following easy care plants: Petunias – these are both annual (one flowering season only), and perennial (several seasons), and come in a range of gorgeous pinks as well as whites, purples and reds. They love the hot sun making them perfect for pots and sunny areas of the garden. Busy lizzies (aka impatiens), are perfect for shaded areas under trees although they will cope with sun if you give them plenty of water.

The edible garden is filling up to be ready for when we return from our summer holiday; and I know my tomatoes in pots will be full of plump cherries soon.

It’s a great idea to stagger your planting if you know you will be away from your garden this holiday season.

ing out now will see them at their best when I get home in January.

It’s hot, but that doesn’t mean you get to be overzealous with your watering can. Check the soil before you water

your plants. If it’s moist 10cm below the surface, there’s no need. It’s best to water when it’s cool, in the morning or evening, because in the sun the water will simply evaporate. Failing that, water the plants right down near their root system, and a thick layer of mulch will keep the moisture in.

And when you water; soak, don’t sprinkle. When you soak the soil, the feeder roots grow deep to find the moisture. If you just sprinkle them all the time, you’ll get shallow roots.

Flowers and grass

For flowers, it’s dead-heading time.

You must remove the tired blooms to ensure the flowers don’t stop coming through. For roses, remember to cut through at a 45 degree angle.

And before you mow the lawns, remember to raise the setting to cut the grass higher. This gives the grass a chance to stand up to the hot and dry weather.

Makes 25-30

Ingredients 500g chopped spinach 1 red onion finely diced 300g diced feta ½ fresh grated nutmeg ½ can evaporated milk 3 beaten eggs 3 Tbsp finely processed parmesan Salt and pepper 10 sheets filo pastry 50g melted butter

Top party season treats Recently I catered for a large group of people, at the same time another function was happening in the restaurant.

With a little planning and clever thinking I knew I could achieve both functions without too much stress.

One of the five dishes was an extension of an existing mezzo platter favourite; spanakopita topped with skordalia and served with a prawn cooked in basil pesto.

The advantage of serving pre-prepared food, which tastes sensational, is, as a host, you can enjoy the party as well instead of being stuck in the kitchen.

The secret is to assemble part of the dish cold and the rest warm and glue them together in a warm state, so when the dish gets cold it sets, even though it’s stacked up, without having a tooth pick holding it together. The flavours of the feta, spinach and creamy garlicy potato are all topped with the basil flavoured prawns – a great way to start the party this summer.

ToffeePop wins Bay’s best biscuit The humble yet decadent ToffeePop is the favourite Griffin’s biscuit in the Bay. The biscuit franchise released the winner of its New Zealand’s Best Bikkie competition this week, revealing the ToffeePop is the Bay of Plenty’s tasty clear winner.

Second place is Cookie Bear Hundreds and Thousands, while Candy Squiggles came in third.

The ToffeePop came in third last year, beaten by the Cookie Bear Hundreds and Thousands in first and Macaroons in second. The ToffeePop also took the national coveted title for the first time in the competition’s three-year existence.

Method Make the spanakopita by lining a tray with baking paper and laying five sheets of buttered filo pastry. Sprinkle half the parmesan powder on the second and third sheets. Mix together the chopped spinach, red onion, eggs, nutmeg, salt and pepper, feta and evaporated milk. Fill the prepared pastry sheet with this mix, spread evenly. Then lay the remaining buttered filo sheets one at a time using remaining parmesan powder near but not on the top layer.

Place another baking sheet on top; then cover with a tray the same size or similar to hold the mixture flat during cooking. Bake the trays in the middle of an oven set at 170 degrees Celsius for 20-25 minutes until the pastry is evenly browned. Remove from oven then place in the fridge until completely cooled two-three hours later with the tray still on top. This helps reduce the flaking from the filo and also makes a compact firm pastry when cut.

Skordalia Ingredients 800g Agria potatoes 1 cup extra virgin olive oil ½ cup of lemon juice 3 garlic cloves (peeled and finely chopped) Method This is a traditional Greek gluten and dairy free spread that will keep for several days in the fridge. It’s great also with fresh bread and olives. Boil the potatoes whole until cooked then place in a potato slicer or fine sieve after removing the skin (while still warm).

Season with a little sea salt then add garlic, and little by little the olive oil and lemon juice in a mixer, or with a large wooden spoon, and plenty of elbow grease. You can add more oil or lemon juice if desired. Mix to a smooth paste. Keep warm for this dish or chill for future use.

Basil prawns Ingredients 500g raw prawns 2Tbsp butter 3-4 Tbsp basil pesto Salt and pepper Cucumber slices Dill (for garnish) Method Sauté prawns lightly in the butter for a minute then add the basil pesto. Reduce and stir prawns in pan until just cooked and pink.

Assembly Cut the spanakopita into squares. Cover the top with a dollop of skordalia, then a slice of cucumber and the warm prawns. Press together and chill until required.

Gourmet market begins A new night market arrives in Mount Maunganui tonight – bringing with it some of the region’s most delicious and soughtafter gourmet and organic foods.

A spectacular range of breads, meats, treats, and fresh produce will fill Coronation Park from 5-9pm as the inaugural Gourmet Night Market takes place.

Organiser Kim Renshaw has no doubt the night will be a scrumptious success, with the event creating a hum of excitement among shoppers and business during the last few months.

“There are all sorts of different ways people can enjoy the event.

I think once you’re there it will be really nice to wander around, graze a bit, and then maybe sit down.”

The market, featuring 35 food stalls, will take over the park every Friday through December and January – with stall spots almost full booked already.

“There are a few places left in January – but the interest from stall owners has been phenomenal,” says Kim. No two weeks will be the same, with stalls rotating and changing

Then along comes a Kiwi wine-maker who submits his sample to a Champagne Blind Tasting in France and smashes the competition.

Mightn’t sound like a big deal but it showed there are many capable and talented winemakers around the world who can

produce quality ‘bubbles’ without the price tag. Whole chapters, books, and albums have been created and documented about champagne so I’ll leave that side alone but I’d just like you to look at a product that celebrates life as the perfect ingredient to head into summer with.

Viewed through ‘a glass half full’ as the bubbles trickle up the side of your glass your worries seem to float away as well.

So chill a bottle, or two, enjoy and have an awesome summer.

Chop some avocado and mango up, and squeeze a little lemon on top of the mix, and season with salt and pepper.

Once you have done this, in a pan heat a little butter and saute some

prawns, a handful per person, until they have turned orange, season with salt and pepper.

They don’t take long to cook.

Assemble the avocado and mango salad on each plate, add prawns and drizzle with a balsamic glaze.

Festivity for the less fortunate A Tauranga bar is setting its sights on creating its own dose of helpful Christmas cheer by encouraging people to come armed with a festive toy in hand.

Tomorrow night the Bahama Hut is running its inaugural Toy Drive collecting toys to be distributed to less fortunate children through the Ronald McDonald House. Bahama Hut owner Jason McCarthy says anyone who presents a brand new toy at the venue between 10pm and 3am will receive a drink in exchange. The will to help others out is what it is all about, he says.

“It is always nice to do for the community. I really enjoy Christmas time and it’s nice to see people being nice to each other.

“Children become very excited to open presents around this time; in fitting with this I thought it would be very nice if we could provide some presents for the less privileged children who may otherwise go without.”

Jason cannot estimate how many toys will be collected but is optimistic the event will not be

a flop. “The regulars are generally a nice bunch of people, more often than not supporting the things we get involved with so I’m thinking we should raise a satisfactory amount of toys.

“In the unlikely event there's a lack of toys donated, I’ll go buy a bunch of toys myself and drop them off.”

A wide range of toys are expected as budgets differ from person to person but people need to remember it is the thought that counts not the amount spent, says Jason. He adds any feedback, negative or positive, is not going to hinder the outcome.

“To be fair, I’m not overly concerned about the feedback, we’re doing this because we want to and whether people want to support it or not is entirely their choice, although I’m pretty sure the majority of the Tauranga public will support the event.” By Luke Balvert

Follow the Yellow Brick Road Performing arts company Artz on Show is holding an exciting confidence-boosting workshop in Tauranga in the January school holidays.

‘The Wizard of Oz’ theme workshop will be tailored to meet the needs of students, aged five-15, at the Bethlehem College Performing Arts Centre on January 13-17.

AOS gives students of all ages and abilities the opportunity to try out a variety of performing arts disciplines.

Daily core classes include drama, theatre arts, hip hop and jazz.

There are variations daily with additional classes including vocals, face painting, art and team building.

Managing director Hayley Govorko says the aim of the week is to introduce students to performing arts and to give

them the opportunity to perform on stage. “We’re very excited to be bringing AOS school holiday workshops back to Tauranga”.

The highlight of the week sees the students participate in a show for their parents to watch on Friday afternoon.

Hayley, who is an experienced dancer and choreographer, says workshops help students to increase their self-confidence and self-esteem.

“It’s very exciting to see the positive changes in a child after attending one of our workshops. Approaching life and learning with confidence is a huge advantage for a young person.”

The workshops have been successfully operating for 10 years in Auckland and Hamilton. To give your child the “gift of confidence”, book them on the Wizard of Oz Workshop on January 13-17. The workshop runs 9pm-4pm daily, with a weekly fee of $275 or a daily fee of $60.

Goodbye Childsplay The owner of one of Tauranga’s oldest toy stores is closing down his shop after operating in the heart of the city for 30 years.

Brian Godfery is closing down the family-owned store Childsplay on December 30.

Unfortunately, the building has to be demolished, and coupled with a decline in sales and people coming into the CBD, Brian says the shop will not be re-opening.

First introduced by a group of mothers as a Tauranga parents centre and educational resource shop, Childsplay has been operating for 30 years on Devonport Rd.

Twelve years ago, Brian took ownership and says he’s seen many generations visit the shop.

“Some of the babies who used to come in with their mums have all grown up and still like to come into the shop.

Parents are being encouraged to get the fishing gear out and head to the Bridge Marina for a fun day with their children on Saturday.

Blue Light’s Kids Gone Fishing day Tauranga coordinator Wendy Nicholls says the annual fishing event offers a great chance for children to enjoy quality time with parents.

“It’s about modelling positive behaviour with the children and showing them you can have lots of fun off the computer.”

Wendy, the Te Aranui Youth Trust manager who runs the Western Bay’s Blue Light programme, says the free event is a great chance for children to spend quality time with their parents in a healthy outdoor activity.

“It’s also a good reminder there are lots of fun free activities on the Western Bay’s doorstep.”

Along with having a chance to catch a fish, children go in the draw for various prizes and can learn fishing tips from TV fishing celebrity and Blue Light patron Graeme Sinclair, who is taking part.

Wendy says the event is part of the Blue Light community policing programme, which aims to cut youth crime and build young people’s self-esteem by promoting positive recreation activities.

“Every year the children absolutely love it. It’s just great to see the smiles on their faces, especially the lucky ones who catch something or win a prize.”

The event is 10am-1pm this Saturday at the Bridge Marina. Bait is supplied and some fishing gear will be available to use.

Information day for intersection plans An information day on next Friday (December 13), will give the community an opportunity to provide comment on the proposed plan to upgrade the current State Highway 2 and SH25 intersection, north of Mangatarata, to a roundabout.

NZTA principal safety engineer Michelle Te Wharau says a roundabout has been identified as the preferred, and more forgiving, form of intersection and work is currently underway to identify the most effective and efficient design.

“The current layout of the T-intersection is now unsuitable, given the large volume of traffic from the Coromandel that turns right from SH25 into SH2

towards Auckland, particularly during peak holiday periods.”

The first stage of the investigation is complete and the public is invited to meet with the consultants and NZTA staff to view and discuss plans and provide comment/ feedback.

The information day is at Corner Stone Café, SH25, near the intersection, from 12pm-4pm December 13.

Omanawa bridge repairs due for completion Work to repair guard rails at Omanawa River Bridge, along State Highway 29, is expected to be completed today. The road across the bridge has been reduced to a single lane for the duration of the works, which began on December 2. The work involved repairing the guard rail on the north side of the Omanawa

River Bridge requiring at least one lane to be closed for this work to be carried out safely, according to the NZ Transport Agency. The Transport Agency thanks motorists for their patience and ongoing co-operation while the important maintenance work was being carried out.

Exposing selenium’s secrets A Tauranga man has written a book about his concerns with the country’s selenium levels in the hope of making others aware of what he says can help prevent some cancers.

David Walpole is hoping to publish his book ‘Selenium Does Prevent Some Cancers – What the Doc and We Need to Know About Selenium’ in the Tauranga community.

This is because David wants people to be aware of NZ’s low rate of the underground metal, which he believes is a “major factor” in cancer rates.

“This isn’t a cure, but we’ve got to act.”

According to the New Zealand Nutrition Foundation, selenium is a mineral which acts as an anti-oxidant and helps to regulate blood pressure and keeps the immune system healthy.

The 80-year-old’s 50-page book – which took him 10 years to complete – helps

people to understand selenium’s effects on the country and how to increase their personal intake.

About 11 years ago David realised the number of his friends dying from cancer were reaching double figures – and he couldn’t understand why.

Suffering prostate problems, David felt he would die next. After learning bowel and lung cancers were halved, and prostate cancers reduced by more than 60 per cent, in those taking selenium, David and a friend tested selenium drops for about

seven months.

David says the pair had the same side effects, including longer healthier nails and an improved sex drive.

“Then one day, about eight months after my commencement, I became aware that my prostate problem symptoms had quietly gone away.”

David also tested the selenium drops on 11 friends; then, following publishing his personal findings in a health magazine, more than 100 people trialled them.

According to David, the minimum rate per person is 1.6 micromoles per litre.

“I believe that half a kilogram of Brazil nuts, consumed two nuts per day until finished; then subsequently selenium drops, containing 200 micrograms per day, is a fast and most economical approach to a satisfactory long term selenium level.”

David says increasing the country’s selenium levels can easily be achieved by adding sufficient selenium to farm fertiliser.

The body’s kinetic chain As you will no doubt diligently recall from last fortnight’s column, showing how the different systems in the body are inter-related, I will now outline some specific examples of how the musculoskeletal system can cause related health problems.

One thing I commonly clinically see is how problems in the upper neck can cause such wide ranging effects. Now, pain is the most obvious sign things are not right, but other symptoms are present, such as disturbed sleep, foggy head, poor concentration; plus your world swirling with vertigo, headaches, migraines, tinnitus and sinusitis. Most of these are often viewed to be from other causes and not related to the mechanical problems in your neck.

joints can give you chest pain that feels like angina or autonomic nervous system issues, such as fatigue, lethargy, sleep problems, blood-sugar and blood pressure fluctuations, fibromyalgia, muscle weakness, etc.

Further down the spine the lower thoracic/upper lumbar nerves can give rise to abdominal pain, bloating and interfere with digestion.

Meanwhile, the lower lumbar can relate to bowel and bladder dysfunction, such as constipation, or in extreme cases loss of control.

How does a simple pinched nerve or joint malalignment cause all this you ask? Simply imagine your spine is like the box housing from which the nerves exit. These are like the electrical wires that transmit impulses to control the body’s functions.

Hence, compression or inflammation of these interferes with the electrical signal to the particular body part/system, which in turn affects its normal function, or sets up a pain/inflammatory response.

Functional medicine country’s future?

I have recently returned from teaching in America and having the opportunity to attend a Heal Thy Practice Conference in Long Beach.

This conference is targeted at physicians looking at moving over to functional medicine, or as we may know it integrative medicine. A physicians’ survey, completed last year in America, shows 45 per cent of doctors are disillusioned with the medical system and are looking at leaving.

This is predominately due to the increased number of patients they have to see for less income, as well as being unable to provide optimal care for their patients for the time they’re given for each appointment. Of all the physicians surveyed, 48 per cent were looking at converting to functional medicine, as it was felt this would not only be supportive to the patient in providing overall health and well-being, but also provide an increase in

revenue for the clinic.

After the conference, I went to teach at The American Centre for Biological Medicine in Phoenix, involving doctors and practitioners. This Centre is a true model of functional medicine, providing state-of-the-art diagnostics tools, therapies and lifestyle support, along with personalised records.

This centre also provides support for a number of health issues; and though its target is more for people undertaking an intense program of therapy, as opposed to day to day patient appointments, it is certainly a glimpse at what can possibly occur in the future of New Zealand medicine.

For most of us the warmer weather means it’s time to get fit and healthy.

The new guide introduces a modern and up-to-date take on the old food pyramid and is a tool to help Kiwis make simple, healthy eating choices as part of their daily life.

It is based on a heart-healthy eating pattern and focuses on looking after the heart.

The visual food guide shows the balance of foods to eat, foods that can be substituted for each other within food groups, and the types of food to

eat for good health.

The biggest change in the visual food guide is it shows the proportional volume of food groups, rather than servings.

The old pyramid has also been flipped upside down putting the most nutritional food, vegetables and fruit, at the top of the food guide.

And just like the old pyramid suggests, fruit and vegetables should take up most of a person’s diet as the food fills the biggest proportion of the 'healthy heart'.

Business confidence on the rise Business confidence is continuing to rise despite expectations interest rates will increase early next year and a looming skills shortage.

In the last two quarters, the level of business optimism has significantly increased in regard to how businesses in the Northern Region view both the economy’s overall performance and how they assess their own prospects in the period ahead.

Tauranga Chamber of Commerce chief executive Max Mason suggests part of the explanation for the improved optimism could relate to the rise in local building activity, increased trading activity in the region, the expectation of

increased profitability and to the nationwide momentum of the Christchurch rebuild.

“The increase in business confidence is very positive for the region and is consistent with the recent reports of increased business and consumer confidence throughout New Zealand this quarter,” says Max. A year ago, net of just 23 per cent of Northern Region businesses believed the general business situation would improve in the following six months.

Asked the same question last month, 59 per cent of the nearly 300 Chamber of Commerce members, who took part in the quarterly survey, predict the environment for doing business would improve in coming months. Similarly, in respect of

how businesses see their own business prospects during the next months, 57 per cent predict they will improve compared to just 46 per cent of this view in November 2012.

However, the trend of recent surveys showing an expectation that interest rates will rise in the next 12 months is maintained.

A year ago, just 14 per cent of respondents believed interest rates would increase during the following 12 months compared with 66 per cent of this view in the survey late last month.

Reports of a continuing skills shortage are reinforced in the finding that 25 per cent of businesses are still having difficulty finding employees with the right skills, the same percentage as one year ago.

How to have a safe tail wagging holiday The Christmas holidays are a great time to get away, but when you have a pet, trips can be a little more difficult to organise.

Purina pet care expert Shivaun Statham has some tips for keeping pets safe during the holidays.

1. Pet-friendly accommodation Accommodation that welcomes furry

family members can be hard to find. There’s also a website called ‘Pets can come too’ that only lists accommodation where pets are welcome.

When choosing your holiday bach, go for one that’s fully fenced, with a nice shady tree for your pal to rest under if you’re heading out for a swim.

2. Getting used to new surroundings Even though pets (especially dogs), enjoy being taken on the family holiday, it can be disconcerting for them going to new surroundings.

To help make them feel comfortable, take a favourite toy or blanket from home that will have familiar smells on it – your dog’s own bed or a cat’s favourite scratch post will work well. Also try not to leave your pet alone at the holiday accommodation for too long.

3. Road trips Some pets love car rides

– others don’t feel quite so amorously about it. If yours is one of the latter, there are a couple of things you can do to relax them before the trip.

Take your dog for a big walk and play in the park before the roady begins – this will mean they’re well exercised and relaxed. If the trip is more than an hour or two, make some quick stops.

Pack up a water bottle and bowl, so you can give them a drink of water if it’s a hot day.

Rat monitoring for Kiwi trust

Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust is inviting keen environmentalists to help in a post-pest control programme monitoring the area’s rat population.

Volunteers will work in pairs with an experienced person in each group. Lines are 1 km long and generally take about two hours to complete.

About 12 people are needed each day, each fine weekend until the job is done.

Post programme monitoring is done to gauge the effectiveness of the current pest control methods.

Common pet injuries and afflictions A torn cruciate ligament is the most common knee injury we see in dogs, and it is sometimes seen in cats.

It is also one of the most common knee injuries in people.

This ligament helps stabilise the knee, preventing the tibia bone from slipping forward out from under the femur bone. And it can be torn acutely when the limb is twisted, or may slowly fray with chronic strain, especially in overweight dogs.

There are various treatment options available to repair and support the joint after this injury in dogs.

A common option is called an extracapsular repair, and involves placing a strong suture between the upper and lower bones, to tighten the joint. An analogy to this is; to prevent a wheelbarrow from rolling down a slope, place a block under the tyre.

More recently our orthopaedic surgeon has been using a procedure named the Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy. This is a complex procedure requiring specialised equipment, and involves altering the angle of the joint by cutting and rotating the tibia bone.

By doing this, the cruciate ligament is no longer required. To compare, this is more like changing the slope under the wheelbarrow to horizontal, to prevent it from rolling. We have been very pleased with the results of this, especially for large and active dogs.

Studies show they tend to recover from surgery more rapidly and usually regain full function, with less arthritis developing in the joint compared to the first option.

Snapped: Told off for quick jaw action Hey sunny Sunners – welcome to summer. I hope you all get to enjoy some sun as you read your favourite paper – The Weekend Sun.

As a devoted newshound, I love receiving feedback from my readers – I welcome your thoughts, and this week I had a particularly interesting letter from my friend Liza Schneider. Liza runs the ARRC wildlife centre and is concerned with the tale in last week’s column.

Dear Flo,

I love to hear your stories and I think that you write beautifully.

I read your adventure this week about the grumpy kingfisher that kept dive bombing you and how it eventually met its demise.

I just wanted to share with you that while kingfishers can be pesky, they usually only do things like that to protect their nest or babies.

ARRC is swamped with deliveries of orphaned baby birds needing attention because their parents have been killed by cats or dogs.

The New Zealand kingfisher is

the only native species of kingfisher.

They are beautifully bright coloured birds, and you’ll be amused to know when they come in they are very grumpy and will happily bite our fingers quite viciously if given half a chance.

As with all animals, and especially our precious native species, it is important to show them respect.

Perhaps next time you might be able to quietly sneak off and leave it in peace.

I appreciate all the great work that you do and send pats and tummy tickles.

Global warming is happening Global warming the flagship of the Greens? (Mike Kuipers von Laude, The Sun, November 29). An important consideration, but hardly their flagship. The Greens are concerned with environmental degradation as a whole, social issues and the economy.

Know very little? Dr Ian McLean, in his CV on the Green Party website, has a “PhD, MSc, BSc (all in biology), trained to appear as expert witness in the Environment Court. Some legal training”.

Dr McLean has never stated “all wealth should be stripped and redistributed equally”.

He adheres to, as do those of us who support Closing the Gap - The Income Equality Project,

is the income gap between those on obscenely high remuneration and those on very low wages be reduced significantly. This isn’t “dismantling capitalism”.

The correlation between the ever-widening gap and negative social statistics, such as crime, imprisonment, drug and alcohol addiction, mental illness, obesity, domestic violence has been clearly shown in the book ‘The Spirit Level: Why More Equal Societies Almost Always Do Better’ by R Wilkinson and K Pickett, and many other publications. Climate change a smokescreen? How about the rapidly

melting glaciers and ice caps; rising waters in the Pacific Islands; ever-increasing and more violent weather storms?

Global warming is happening - much more rapidly than predicted through a natural cycle.

About 95 per cent of climate scientists, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and a large majority believe human activity plays a significant role in global warming.

Dr Ian McLean and E Orsulich are among others, in and out of the Green Party, doing an enormous amount of unpaid work to preserve and enhance our environment, endeavouring to leave it in an okay state for future generations.

They realise environment and economy are interdependent.

The fundamental philosophies underpinning the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand are twofold: to promote sustainable economic growth that is in harmony with the natural environment and to work towards a fair and just society. People are beginning to understand that Neoliberal economics, the pursuit of individual wealth at any cost, feeds upon rampant consumerism and is ultimately unsustainable.

It is little wonder these same people are looking to the Green approach as a desirable alternative.

Recent polls indicate the number is steadily increasing. It is not surprising therefore attacks on individuals, such as Dr Ian McLean and the Green Party in general, are becoming more strident.

Recent letters from Mike Kuipers von Landes and M Houlding are very good examples of this.

One can hardly take seriously last week’s letters to the editor by M Houlding and Mike Kuipers von Lande about the Greens.

The Greens are now well-established as the third biggest political party in New Zealand, with an average of 12 per cent national support in recent opinion polls.

Because they are agents of and advocates for change, however, they inevitably attract vitriol.

Yes, there will always be those who prefer not to accept what scientists are trying to tell us about climate change and man-made global warming. Such predictions are dismissed as alarmist.

Those skeptics will never vote Green and will continue to write uninformed letters to the editor.

However, an increasing number of New Zealanders understand that Green policies could help to transition us away from fossil fuels and build a vibrant ‘green’ economy, offering fresh and positive solutions.

Baseless innuendo and attempted character assassination are reminiscent of the darkest moments of the McCarthy era in the USA of the 1950s. They have no part in New Zealand’s democratic tradition.

I doubt either letter writer, mentioned above, is aware of a single Green Party policy and yet insinuate in their letters they’re steeped in it.

Rather than indulge in these name calling exercises, better suited to school playgrounds, the writers should read some serious research, such as ‘The Spirit Level: Why More Equal Societies Almost Always Do Better’ by Wilkinson and Pickett, in which it is argued: “A fair society is an essential part of our wellbeing”.

The millionaires and billionaires think they’re impervious to environmental destruction because they’ve got money.

They’re far from right.

When we finally destroy the environment by global warming, or by nuclear war, or destroying the oceans, which is not that far away, money won’t save you.

M Houlding’s grandchildren (if he has any), will be suffering before the end of this century. Glaciers around the world are disappearing, but provide much drinking water for billions. They’ll become climate change refugees. Money won’t save us.

On economic issues, the Greens are not trying to dismantle capitalism, nor are they closet communists.

This level of inequality creates social, health and other problems that affect us all. The Greens are interested in social justice and a fair go for everyone.

Thankfully, the Green Party offers a voting option for the growing number of us who wish to see action on climate change, to build a green sustainable low-carbon economy, reduce levels of inequality; and the disparate social, health and justice ills, which it causes, and to leave behind a healthy habitable planet for future generations and for other species.

We promote sustainability In relation to letters by M Kuipers von Lande and M Houlding (The Sun, November 29), global warming is not a god created by the Greens, it is a reality owned by the world. The prospect of humans affecting global climate first emerged in the 19th Century, long before Green politics appeared.

The possibility of catastrophic global temperature decrease (nuclear winter) was discussed during the 1970s, based on known short-term effects of volcanic eruptions.

Predictions about global warming emerged in the 1980s, supported and confirmed by many studies since.

The research is based on evidence, not political agendas or belief. I would be delighted if the conclusions prove to be wrong.

The Greens promote sustainable systems for generating energy. It is recognised some technologies are expensive and involve visual pollution, or other environmental effects (such as damming wild rivers).

Best, is direct production of electricity from the sun, because much of the required infrastructure (buildings) already exists.

Income inequality is a serious issue in our society. However, nobody proposes to strip

wealth from anybody, or to dismantle capitalism. Redistribution of wealth will involve restructuring the tax system, among other things, and will take time.

Examples exist in several Scandinavian countries, where measures of human happiness are among the highest in the world.

Eddie Orsulich is not a Green Party spokesperson, although he defends the Green perspective.

The Denniston Plateau is one of our few remaining pristine wildernesses and is deserving of protection for that reason alone.

I have indeed ponder the question of when the majority of the human race became intelligent to the point of being stupid is what I see it in the Green bashers’ letters recently.

I guess we are all influenced from a young age, it’s just some can see clearly and some know how to be heard while the majority sit and criticise with their bull-headed ignorance.

To those who believe we are safe from our own demise and global warming is not a reality, or never be a possibility; that pollution is not nearly as bad as is said, and what

you’re doing for your children’s future is correct and to hang with natures needs, ha ha.

You may try this at home and don’t be shy. For one year, keep all your household rubbish on your own section, along with your human waste, oils, tyres, and unwanted items.

And after the year, if you’re happy being surrounded by your own crap, and wish to continue this experiment, by all means do so.

Now look at everyone else, and you’ll see the same rubbish created by them.

Now criticise someone for wishing a

better future for their children, rather than the greedy, ignorant attitude held by the large majority. Yes, we are polluting at an unsustainable rate, leaving our children and grandchildren money to spend in a giant rubbish tip.

It is time to start thinking logically and change an outdated idea that money is what makes the world go round. It’s more like money will stop the world.

I can’t wait to read the intelligent critics’ response, as those that have the greed bug always have the right response.

Summerfest flop: bludging must stop

Summerfest Trust has pulled the plug on its annual vent for 2014 and having regard to its relationship with Creative Tauranga (of Hairy Maclary and Cargo Shed fame), a good job too.

Seemingly, the Summerfest Trust was set up to distance itself from Creative Tauranga, which had provided funds via a loan of $15,000.

It is little wonder that the more astute at TCC sensed monkey business and refused

funding, albeit then proceeding to approve funding of $32,000 to another equally-undeserving trougher in the form of Pukehinahina Trust for the Gate Pa commemorations.

Be that as it may, the understanding from recent reports is that Summerfest had secured ‘private backing’ but it looks like they saw the light too. Summerfest may very well be a good event but do proper budgets and stop bludging.

If outfits can’t stand on their own two feet

without plundering TCC ratepayers, then put away the begging bowl because the message from Tauranga ratepayers and residents at the last elections was loud and clear - to all the serial troughers, who treat TCC ratepayers as providers of first resort, not lenders of last resort - start self fundraising and put your own monies where the ‘wish list’ mouth is, because people are sick of rampant prodigality after nine long years.

Pike River: enough support already

The Government is right to stand firm against the emotive pressure for it to step in pay the courtordered reparation to the Pike River families.

Because of the high profile nature of the tragedy these families have received far more extra financial support than most other accident victims could ever dream of. In addition, their ACC entitlements will quite rightly cost ACC millions.

It is sad to see the grandstanding of other political parties on this issue. Further, it is my view the prosecution of the company on health and safety charges is a waste of time, when we all know it is broke.

Plus, there are contractors and other creditors unpaid and shareholders who have lost their money.

The judge should have used some common sense and not made a reparation order at all, citing the obvious reasons. Maybe it would have been better to save costs of the case to distribute the estimated savings among Pike families?

We need to acknowledge accident victims in NZ end up being far better off than those who suffer from disease and disablement.

This is because we all pay a lot of money into ACC during our lifetimes. A trend, in recent years, for families to receive court-ordered reparation on top is disturbing in that it’s a type of double-dipping.

It also has a lottery element to it, which is what ACC is set up to avoid.

The death of the album Last week we celebrated the last gasp of the album, the CD, the long player.

The thousandth album to reach number one in the UK charts since such counting began in 1956 had been announced and it was a chance to look at some quirky album stats. You can find the column online at SunLive if you fancy a recap.

But, sadly, that was putting the cart before the horse, so to speak, the wake before the funeral. Because the funeral for the album has already happened, even if no one's really noticed yet. (Warning: I'm going to quote a guy called Bob Lefsetz quite a lot this week. He writes a regular thing called The Lefsetz Letter where he expounds upon all things music-biz-related. He knows a lot and seems very smart, if sometimes depressingly realistic. You can find him at http://lefsetz.com/wordpress.)

What set me to this latest unhappy line of thinking was a recent letter from Lefsetz which started in this fashion: “The album is dying in front of our very eyes...

This is not emotion, this is statistics. The shelf life of news is shorter than ever. The shelf life of art... you blink and it's done.”

An outdated view

Now this is clearly bad news for someone with my apparently now outdated view of the music scene.

Which is probably the same view that many musicians, though possibly only musicians over the age of 35, share. That holds that roughly how things work is that a band goes out and gigs, while getting together a good swag of original songs, then perhaps records an EP - say four songs – or just a single with an accompanying video and flogs that around to whoever on radio or television will play it, then, hopefully with a little publicity generated from the first recording, records a full album which is - again, hopefully – widely reviewed and has another single on it which gets radio play and then the band tour to great acclaim and sell a bunch of albums on the strength of that and the singles and accompanying videos.

That was the old model. I like it for two reasons.

Firstly, by selling albums and touring, a band can

actually make a bit of money; secondly, as I've banged on about before here, the More of Katy Perry’s albums sold band makes an than Paul McCartney’s. album. Sure, having one good song, a great single, is a feat in itself.

One great single is worth a hundred mediocre albums.

But a great album, where songs can resonate with each other and work together to produce something that is greater than the sum of its parts – be it Highway 61, Odelay or Elephant – that is really something worth aspiring to. Except that the album is dead.

A watertight case

Lefsetz makes a pretty watertight case. He points out the Katy Perry new album sold only 287,000 copies on its debut. Which is a truly pathetic number. Why? “The youngsters are streaming singles and the oldsters are staying home. How do I know? Elton's album isn't even in the Top Fifty and McCartney's album barely broke 20,000 this week, and there wasn't a better oldster hype than for these two projects. People just don't want 'em.” That's a worry. Changing lifestyles and lower attention spans.

“We've turned into a nation of grazers. And the artist's job is to constantly be at the smorgasbord. Not to deliver one big meal that is picked at and thrown away, but a constant presence in the public's face... You put out these albums and in almost every case, the public moves on in a matter of WEEKS! A few bought it, they heard it, and they're satisfied, and left waiting for years until you grace them with a new release. The rest of the public is just waiting for a hit single to burble, and if it does, they'll tap their toes and snap their fingers...”

And who can deny it? The figures say it all.

The sad thing is that we are being reduced to art of instant gratification. Soon all we'll be left with is the single that you love on first listen but hate after the next ten, not the more thoughtful album track that you first pass over but which grows on you until it becomes an indelible part of your life.

THE WORLD’S END Starring: Simon Pegg, Mark Frost, Paddy Considine, Martin Feeeman - Dir: Steven Wright I thought it would be pretty hard to top Hot Fuzz, or, for that matter, Shaun of the Dead, but the comedy team of Wright, Pegg and Frost have certainly equalled them with this rather brilliant comedy take on middle aged angst and alien invasions.

The four actors listed above are a group of friends who once went on a legendary (at least in their minds), pub crawl in their small hometown, failing to reach the final pub, the eponymous World’s End. Refusing to grow up, Simon Pegg drags the others back for one more crack. Along the way they bicker, meet old acquaintances – Pierce Brosnan, Rosamund Pike – and then, just as the others are about to leave The Hobbit: An Unexpected was never Journey exactly what you’d call a short film, yet – as has become traditional – it now arrives on video shelves with an extra eight per cent, the added 13 minutes pushing the run-time to more than three hours. The new stuff comes in short scenes scattered throughout; some enriching the story, some adding character or colour, none even vaguely essential (and unfortunately there are two more songs). Fans will be happy; there is a commentary and some nine hours of ‘appendices’ to wallow in. And there’s only about 20 sleeps until the next one.

The Bling Ring is Sophia Coppola’s new film; another investigation into the strange attractions of privilege, and one ripped straight from the True Crime pages of Hollywood. It documents the incident when a group of spoilt rich kids took to breaking into celebrity homes (Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Rachel Bilson etc), and stealing clothes and accessories. The media gave them the titular handle. This tells the story pretty straight, complete with celeb cameos from some victims. The problem is, as with Coppola’s previous films, that it’s all rather superficial, though with these vacuous completely self-absorbed protagonists perhaps that’s the point.

in disgust at Pegg’s self-deluded wide-boy, there’s an alien invasion, bodysnatcher-style.

It’s sterling stuff. The characters are precise and real and Pegg’s longing for a life that never really eventuated taps into universal anxiety. There are also some cracker gags about the homogenisation of small-town England. It’s hilarious.

And it’ll always have a special place for me, since the person I saw it with was (unbeknownst to me), unaware of the impending alien takeover. I assumed she’d seen the trailer. Half an hour in, after nothing but domestic comedy, there’s a pub fight. Someone gets their head ripped off; their neck starts spurting blue blood. She just about fell off her seat. It was almost as funny as the movie. of The Sweeney and James McAvoy is again in the middle of a bank robbery. That’s how it starts, his cop unsuccessfully chasing motorcycle-riding Mark Strong and his gang. Three years later with his son in trouble Strong returns to England. McAvoy – mentally and physically scarred – is waiting along with a whole bunch of trouble and political police doubledealing. A classy roster of Brit thesps (Peter Mullan, Andrea Riseborough, David Morrissey, et al), add heft to a tight gangster drama, the character work matched by a satisfyingly layered plot.

Once again with The Conspiracy we’re back in found footage territory and, just to prove that it’s not the format but what you do with it, this makes the now rather stale approach seem fresh. The set-up has a couple of young aspiring filmmakers decide to make a documentary about a ‘conspiracy nut’, allowing for an entertaining glance at favourite conspiracy theories du jour. Then suddenly their subject disappears, and, as they try to track him down and understand his wild theories, strange and sinister things occur. It gets weaker as it goes along, but the initial ride is most entertaining.

A donkey, carols and Christmas The Christmas story of Mary and Joseph will come to life in the city centre next weekend as hundreds of children and adults enjoy Carols on the Waterfront.

The second annual event attracted almost 1000 people last year – and organisers are confident for another successful sing-along on Sunday, December 15.

A joint venture between Downtown Tauranga and five city churches, the family friendly event sees people gather at No.1 The Strand at 5.30pm before proceeding down The Strand together.

“Everyone is invited to join the procession if they want to, and children are invited to dress up as angels or shepherds and join in the Christmas spirit of the season,” says committee coordinator Dale Williamson.

The catch? They’ll be led by Mary and Joseph – and a donkey – and will stop at various places along the street in classic Christmas story style.

“We are going to stop and see if any of the ‘innkeepers’ will let us in. They didn’t last year, but we will try again.”

Everyone will then head towards the waterfront grass area, where they will enjoy Christmas carols, music, and small talks from different people.

“The group, Emmaus, will be playing at the waterfront from 5.40pm and the Salvation Army Band will accompany the carol singing.

“People are invited to come along, have a picnic, and sing some carols. They’re Holy Trinity Rev Dale Williamson and St Enoch’s Presbyterian all well-known carols and it should be a Church Rev Jim Wallace. Photo by Tracy Hardy. wonderful celebration of Christmas.”

The carol singing will begin about 6pm – though with a donkey on set, you See the next edition of The Weekend Sun for your never know, says Dale. “We will do our best Christmas Carols on the Waterfront and Christmas to aim for six.”

‘Maxine’ singer Tauranga-bound With a glass of wine in hand, and a picnic blanket under foot, it will be a night to remember at the Stars Under The Stars concert at Mills Reef Winery next year.

Among the iconic 1980s Kiwi line-up is Sharon O’Neill – who caught up with The Weekend Sun this week ahead of the Anniversary Weekend event.

Based in Sydney, Australia, Sharon is looking forward to her trip back home and being a part of Stars Under The Stars.

“I think it’s a brilliant idea. I love these winery events in New Zealand. Back in my day that didn’t exist, and it’s a wonderful thing.

“A while back we all got together at Villa Maria Estate [in Auckland], and it was outdoors and just a beautiful night.

People come and enjoy food and drinks and just Sharon O’Neill is make a night of it.”

NZ-bound in 2014.

Appearing alongside Sharon is The Narcs, Andrew Fagan, Shona Laing, Margaret Urlich, Annie Crummer and Debbie Harwood.

Sharon says the audience can expect a mix of individual performances and group numbers – with the female artists looking forward to the get together.

“When we all get together we all do our individual hits and then we sing together. It is the brain child of Debbie Harwood, who put us all together. We’re sort of like peas and carrots, we all click and we love each other’s material.”

Sharon herself is planning on bringing back a few of the classics – including ‘Words’ and ‘Maxine’.

Currently, the 61-yearold is keeping busy writing music and working on a ‘Very best of ’ album, which she hopes to promote in the New Year.

While admitting she does get back home quite often, it’s been a long time since she’s visited “beautiful” Tauranga.

Stars Under The Stars is on Auckland Anniversary Weekend, January 25-26.

Each concert will allow for about 3000 people, with recent years’ events selling out.

What do we celebrate at Christmas?

When Joseph, who was engaged to Mary, was deciding how he should divorce his wife to be, he was visited by an angel of the Lord who said: “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

Christmas is and should be for all who claim the name of Jesus Christ as Lord, a celebration of the outworking of the redemptive plan as promised by God. As the angel said: “[Jesus] will save his people from their sins”.

Christmas is also a celebration of the faithfulness of our Sovereign God, who has worked all of history so that those who will come to the Lord in humble repentance will find His mercy, love and grace. It’s a celebration of the coming of the sinless life of the God-Man Jesus Christ, who, for the joy set before him, endured the cross,

despising the shame; and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. At Christmas we celebrate a Holy God reaching down to a fallen humanity to provide the way of salvation through Jesus Christ, for there is no other name under heaven or on earth whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12).

This Christmas, give glory to God, turn to God in repentance; thank him for giving us his Son the Lord Jesus Christ to be the satisfaction of the wrath of God, the propitiation for our sins. Celebrate the birth of Christ.

The doctrines of Christian faith In the early 20th Century, several wellrespected theologians and Bible teachers, together with leaders from a number of different denominations, published a book called ‘The Fundamentals’ which was mailed free to more than 300,000 ministers, missionaries and other Christian workers in different parts of the world.

‘The Fundamentals’ set out and discussed what were termed ‘the Five Basic Doctrines of the Christian Faith’ – the foundational teachings or doctrines of the Church and the non-negotiable truths according to the Word of God. These five basic doctrines are: 1. The Trinity: God is One, Father, Son and Holy Spirit and each Person in the Godhead is co-equal and co-eternal.

2. The Person of Jesus Christ: Jesus is fully God and fully man.

3. The Second Coming: Jesus Christ is coming bodily to earth to rule and judge.

4. Salvation: By grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

5. The Scriptures: wholly inspired, entirely inerrant and sufficient for all of Christian life.

All of these five basic doctrines are under attack, or are being compromised in one way or another today.

This is entirely expected as a sign of the last days (see 2 Timothy 4:2-4).

Paul speaks to Timothy and Titus about the importance of sound doctrine (1 Timothy 1:10, 6:3, Titus 1:9, 2:1). The word ‘sound’ literally refers to teaching that is healthy and not diseased, because healthy doctrine produces spiritually-healthy believers, while diseased doctrine produces deceived people and false converts.

It is important then that we “keep contending earnestly for the faith, which was once and for all passed on to God’s people” (Jude 3).

We need to especially pray for Church leaders, because a key requirement for an elder/ shepherd is he “must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it” (Titus 1:9).
