ne year on The container ship Rena ran aground on Astrolabe Reef a year ago today causing New Zealand’s worst ever maritime environmental disaster. This week it was announced a $27.6million compensation deal has been
reached with the owners of the cargo ship - Daina Shipping Company – meaning the Government is likely to be left with a shortfall of about $20million from the clean-up effort. That has again raised the prospect of part of the
wreck being left on the reef as a diving attraction, which Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby believes is sure to “raise quite a lot of community debate. The Weekend Sun staff flew over the wreck
on Wednesday afternoon at a height of 1500ft to capture up-todate images of the ever-changing scene. More Rena coverage on pages 6, 7 and 53.
