Celebrating short cool days; long hot nights We’ve just clicked over the shortest day, and by the way you’re all bouncing around so cheerfully, summer must be just around the corner.

Okay, well maybe you’re not quite fizzing over with spring fever yet. But hang in there. It can’t be long.

Soon these long, cold, dark nights will be just a thing of the past. Some take the long, cold nights harder than others – and none more so than the lovely Susan Boyle, who is apparently on the prowl for a man. The long, lonely nights have been too much and dear Susan wants a man to share her life with, before the depths of winter again strike the northern hemisphere.

We’re thinking the lucky man will most likely be looking forward to the darkness. As much as pos-

signed the letter on behalf of the “service of the Ministry of Social Development” is probably blissfully unaware that our reader’s debt isn’t worth the trouble of chasing.

We also know that this sort of pennypinching pettiness has been going on for generations. And, we all know of similar cases of cracking a peanut with the sledgehammer.

Surely there should be a minimum value, say to the nearest dollar or five, before these sorts of drastic letters are fired off?

The letter goes to advise: “As you need to repay this money we will deduct $0.02 a week from your Invalids Benefit … these payments will continue until the full amount is repaid.”

Well, we have news for you, Barbara: It won’t take long at that rate!

Work and Income also offer the beneficiary the option to have the decision reviewed.

“We have forms available or you can write to us.”

Uh oh, there goes another 80 cents of wasted postage stamp to argue a 2 cent debt.

But there is some light this week.

In more sensible news… umm… well I’m not sure there is any.

No, in fact I can confirm there isn’t anything. Hang on, here it is: Nelson Mandela is feeling better. Hooray.

Bargain of the year: Restructure epic fail Finally this week, special mention goes to the Tauranga City Council, which has pulled off the most sensational restructure in history: Setting out to consolidate costs, and ending up spending $1.6m and gaining five extra staff.

Ratepayers will be stoked that the drive for efficiency at city hall has resulted in not fewer staff employed, but more.

Only a council could have achieved this startling result. Only people in charge of other people’s money could possibly take on a task to cut costs and reduce staff – but end up spending millions, and achieve exactly the opposite.

Now to be fair, the whole exercise was complicated beyond belief by some factors outside of the control of councillors, such as the CEO dying suddenly and other compounding issues. But try telling all that to the average ratepayer who has to pick up the tab at the end.

It reminds us of the story of the wife excitedly telling her husband she saved $400 because she bought four pairs of $200 shoes that were on special at half price. Depending on how you look at it, she thinks she saved hundreds and the husband only sees she blew hundreds.

It’s like sending the boy to market to sell the pig, and he comes home to the farm with two pigs, some chickens, a blind threelegged dog and a huge debt to the chicken farmer.

Anyway, there must be someone out there brave enough to tackle this task, and we’re taking nominations here at RR. Rest assured, the potential candidates will be put through some rigorous testing before they’re submitted to the Boyle Selection Committee.

Perhaps the best option for filling Susan’s long nights would be a knight. Such as Lancelot. As this is a Boyle that certainly needs lancing.

We’re expecting people will also give up riding Segways in droves. It may not, however, affect the number of people driving leopardcolour scheme cars. There are some who just can’t be saved.

Stepping out of the political shadows and into the spotlight this week is Te Ururoa Flavell, columnist in the Sun and the Maori MP poised to take up leadership of the Maori Party, with the resignation of Pita Sharples. We wish Te Ururoa all the best in his political quest.

Meanwhile, still in the dark and very likely to stay there, is the bureaucrat at Work and Income who recently wrote a letter to a disabled guy, warning him that he owed $0.02.

Yes, you read that right. Two cents. The ever-efficient department came out all guns blazing to recover its two cents from this dastardly customer, including posting him a letter which would have cost at least forty times that much, just for the stamp. Not to mention the printing of the letter, handling by staff plus a fair contribution to the demise of the planet.

Now we realise that most of these officious communications are computer generated; and that the lovely Barbara who

Hospice expands

$3.6m extension announced

Waipuna Hospice has today announced plans for a $3.6m extension which will help cater to the rapidly growing number of patient referrals.

The hospice has grown extensively since opening in the Bay more than 20 years ago, with patient numbers increasing 32 per cent in the last six years. Staff expect to care for 750 – 800 patients this year, with an average 46 new referrals each month. To accommodate this growth, TECT has donated a $1.8m grant, being matched by the Waipuna Hospice Foundation, for a new Day Services Wing.

The new wing will contain clinic and medical procedure rooms,

lounge and family areas, as well as providing more space for counselling, bereavement support groups, massage therapy and education.

CEO Richard Thurlow says it will cater for newly referred and more active patients, relieving pressure off the Hospice at Home Service which looks after seriously unwell patients.

“We see the Day Services Wing as a major part of our future plan to be able to care for the increasing numbers of patients in the Western Bay region. This new wing will allow us to care for patients at the early stages of their illness whilst they are mobile and remain independent.”

Bruce Matthews The new wing will also include an 021 580 580 expanded training room accommodating up to 100 people to provide specialist palliative care education to general practitioners, practice nurses and aged residential care staff.

Richard says the current space, which houses about 35 trainees, isn’t big enough anymore.

“We’re raising palliative care’s profile in the community, and that will raise the quality and standard as well – so it’s really excellent.”

Waipuna Hospice Foundation chair Tom Roper says the project is vital to managing increased referral numbers and thanks TECT extensively for their generosity.

“TECT have been superbly supportive over the years.”

Man found guilty of Gary Kimura murder

A Te Puke man has been found guilty of the murder of Tauranga businessman Gary Kimura over a $30,000 debt. The jury returned with a guilty verdict for 35-year-old Witeri Neketai at 7pm on Monday, following a week-long trial in the Hamilton High Court. Co-accused, Tauranga man Taonui Hiku, 27, was found not guilty of manslaughter by the jury over the death of the 42-year-old businessman.

Kimura died in hospital after being assaulted outside his Margaret Road home on October 5, 2011 over a $30,000 debt owed to Auckland man Joseph Rewiri.

Rewiri, who was serving a life sentence for killing Rotorua man Peter Franklyn in 2006, has admitted to ordering the attack from jail via text messages sent to Neketai.

He was facing a murder charge, but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter during the trial last week.

Man arrested over stabbing

A 27-year-old Tauranga man has been arrested and charged following the stabbing of a man at a Greerton home earlier this month.

The man appeared in Tauranga District Court on Thursday charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The arrest follows a police investigation into the stabbing of a Tauranga man at a Rawhiti Street home in Greerton overnight on June 5-6. Detective Sergeant Alan Kingsbury says an assault occurred at the house where the victim received a number of stab wounds to his upper body.

Pet horse dies in dog attack

Katikati resident Jim Hume has hard advice for dog owners after a shar pei cross attacked his miniature horse leaving it with fatal injuries outside the family’s rural home on Friday. The dog escaped from a neighbouring property on Friday, June 28 and jumped a fence into the kiwifruit orchard. Jim’s wife Debbie was in the house, about 50m away from Milo, when she saw the dog attack the horse.

Jim and the dog’s carer used sticks to try and beat the dog off Milo, but not before the dog seriously wounded the horse. Both animals were put down following the attack.

Sharples quits: Te Ururoa tipped

Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell is tipped to become the next Maori Party leader after Dr Pita Sharples announced his retirement as party co-leader and from politics this morning.

Te Ururoa is likely to be voted in as the next leader at the party conference in two weeks’ time. Dr Pita Sharples announced he is stepping down as coleader during a press conference in Wellington with co-leader Tariana Turia and Te Ururoa by his side on Tuesday.

At the conference, Te Ururoa, who challenged Pita to the leadership role earlier this year, refused to say if he expects to be named leader, saying it is a decision for the Maori Party council at its AGM.

Go Bus driver warned over fare

A Tauranga bus driver, who turned away a young boy who only had a $20 note for a $1.80 fare, and then swore at her supervisor when questioned about it, has had her complaint rejected.

Bus driver Kay Pridmore’s complaint to the Employment Relations Authority over a written warning she received on the incident has been rejected by ERA member Eleanor Robinson.

Embracing age friendliness Tauranga city elderly are set for a major boost after Tauranga City Council gave the green light to become the first age-friendly city in New Zealand.

In a pioneering move, councillors agreed at last week’s strategy and policy committee meeting to accept the draft strategy in the aim to follow a global movement of improving cities to meet the needs of an ageing population.

Between 2006 and 2031, the number of older residents living in Tauranga is predicted to double – with one in four residents being over 65 years old by 2031.

Two major issues identified as needing urgent attention are affordable and future-proofed housing, and elderly’s access to information. Tauranga Age Concern chair Angela Scott says promoting the ‘Life Mark’ standard on all homes will cut out added costs associated with modifying existing homes.

Homes built under the standard allow for future ‘elderly’ alterations, including disability ramps and practical door handles. “What we are trying to do is get people to think on the age-friendly wavelength. When they are doing anything they need to think ‘will this be fine for older people?’ If it is, it’s good for everyone. Tauranga City Mayor Stuart Crosby is thrilled to adopt the “New Zealand leading document”.

Dean’s appointment – which fulfils a requirement to have one director on the board with a strong association with the speedway business – is for two years from July 8, 2013 to June 30, 2015. He replaces BOP Speedway Association president Bernie Gillon.

Forget about drill sergeants yelling ‘no pain, no gain’, a group of senior Mount Maunganui College students are pushing themselves to put their own comfort on the line for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Claudia Colenso, one of the college’s four sports captains organising the event, says the annual polar plunge fundraiser was a fun and refreshing way to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation – and pay tribute to student leader Jed Roberts who died from the disease.

It is the third year the college has held the midwinter plunge into Omanu Beach’s icy waters with organiser hoping they will attract students from other secondary schools, along with more

than 150 seniors from the college already confirmed.

Sports coordinator Sue Cochrane says Jed was a popular student, whose death had a major impact on many students and the wider school community.

Claudia describes Jed as an inspiration, saying she knew him as her friend Lia’s brother: “He was always around and supportive of her, he was a nice guy.”

Organisers encourage anyone interested to take part in the dip, and suggest they get into the leukaemia theme by wearing orange. They aim to raise more than the $4000 collected for the foundation last year with the plunge, mufti day and head shave events.

Everybody taking part pays a $3 entry fee. The plunge will be held by Omanu Surf Club, on Wednesday at 8.30am.

For Tauranga’s Bill Allen July 3, 1963 started like any other day.

Tauranga’s Bill Allen escaped the Kaimai DC3 crash when he was forced to take the next flight because of overloading.

He was heading from Auckland to Gisborne on his regular NAC flight via Tauranga, but was bumped off with another passenger to take the next flight due to overloading.

Hours later, the mistake had saved his life. The National Airways Flight 441 crashed into the side of the Kaimai range, killing all 23 onboard.

When Bill called the office they couldn’t believe he was alive. “They thought I was booked in for the flight and I was in the crash.”

On Wednesday hundreds of people took part in the 50th anniversary memorial service of New Zealand’s worst domestic air disaster but Bill, now 92, was unable to attend.

Recalling the experience, he says it was about his fifth near-miss with death after some close calls in WWII. But says it was always chilling to see the wreckage at the top of the range glint in the sunlight when he drove through Waikato before it was hidden by bush.

Kaimai Ramblers member Roger Montgomerie says after a tough 90 minute walk from the top of Thompson Track, all that is left of the wreckage is two thirds of a wing and one set of landing gear.

Rena compo scramble begins People and businesses with claims arising from the grounding of the Rena have until October 30 to lodge them at the Tauranga High Court.

The wreck’s owners and insurers, Daina Shipping and The Swedish Club, have limited their liability to $11 million.

If claims from the disaffected are more than that, the amounts will be prorated. For that reason, all claims have to be backed up so the court can decide which are genuine.

Details of how to go about this will be provided in public notices that will advertise the compensation claim deadline date in international media during the next week or so. Established claims will be paid as directed by the court.

The amount of the fund, calculated in accordance with the Maritime Transport Act, is NZ$11,030,110. The fund is set up by the owner and insurer of the Rena.

The amount is the result of a High Court Order issued on June 4, under Part 7 of the Maritime Transport Act, establishing a Limitation Fund to compensate for losses incurred as a result of the Rena grounding.

“We have kept our $27.6 mil-

lion settlement with the New Zealand Government outside the limitation process, so that the $11million fund, which is the maximum under New Zealand law, will be available to compensate individuals and businesses who have suffered loss,” says Rena insurers The Swedish Club claims manager Captain John Owen.

“We started this process in October last year, as part of our on-going commitment to do the right thing by the New Zealand public. This approach is designed to best help those who have suffered financial loss as a result of the grounding.”

The amount of the fund is calculated according to the tonnage of the vessel, under the Maritime Transport Act 1994 and the International Maritime Organization’s Convention on Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims 1976.

A Magic fresh start The loss of a 2013 ANZ Championship title is still “very raw” for Noeline Taurua.

But as the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic coach closes the door on 11 years with the franchise, she faces forward to a blank canvas and awaits the future with excitement.

Magic’s hopes of a second ANZ title were dashed on Sunday after losing to the Firebirds 53-50.

Noeline admits it’s a devastating loss that will take a while to sink in. “It’s still very raw. It’s a game you put a lot into – and at the end it’s about a result and winning.

“We know what that feels like, and we also have a very clear feeling of what it feels like when

you don’t. And I suppose there is nothing worse than knowing that the season has ended.”

Despite the disappointing end, Noeline admits there have been many highlights – topped by the team’s championship win last year.

“Last year was huge for us. We learned so much about ourselves and what it takes to perform at that level consistently.

“We’ve got a great history, and it’s a fantastic legacy. We’ve been a consistent high performer and we must celebrate it.

“I have enjoyed every moment of it.”

Magic is the only team in the championship’s history to make the play-offs every year since its beginning in 2008 – an achievement the Magic players constantly attribute

to Noeline’s success as a coach.

They are also the only team to make three grand finals and New Zealand’s only team to win the competition.

Having focused the time since her announced departure on getting her team to the end, Noeline says she has no idea what her future holds, but netball will never leave her.

The Mount Maunganui mother is looking forward to exploring her options and seeing what the future holds. “It’s part of my make-up. I’ve been involved since I was nine years old, so it will also be part of me no matter where I go or what I do.

“It’s very exciting. A blank canvas is good.”

The attentiveness and vigilance of Neighbourhood Support members is seeing large reductions in community crime throughout the Western Bay of Plenty – and they are seeking help to improve these results further.

Neighbourhood Support operates in seven areas from Te Puke to Katikati under the current umbrella of a WBOP executive committee.

Changing of the guard at Merivale He’s still coming to grips with his new role as general manager of the Merivale Community Centre, but John Fletcher believes he can continue to make improvements.

John has worked at the centre for the last six years and has taken over the role of general manager after Graham Cameron bowed out of the job last week.

“Obviously, I am very familiar with Merivale and the community – and this community has an amazing heart,” says John.

“There are some amazing people. It’s not without its challenges and it’s not without its difficulties, but I have every confidence the community centre working with people in

the community can make things a lot better than they are.”

John, who is originally from the United Kingdom and moved to New Zealand 25 years ago, has spent the last week coming to grips with his new role.

“I have been working with staff and with people in the community about where we are going to go in moving forward.

“Before I took on this role I was the services manager which meant [operating] the day to day running of the centre, in terms of our staffing and projects.”

John says he will still being doing those things as well as taking on aspects of Graham’s former role.

John has worked in the Non-Government Organisation sector in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Australia in different roles.

“It’s fair to say that my career has always been about people and it’s always been around supporting people, empowering people and helping people to help themselves,” says John.

“I have done that as part of Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) in the UK; and I have done it in response to a number of disability issues and organisations.

And, as part of different community organisations, like the Merivale Community Centre.”

A welcome party After years of voluntary work to help his beloved suburb, Welcome Bay stalwart Perry Keyte will be the toast of his community this Sunday.

Eight years on, since he was part of the founding team to setup the Welcome Bay Community Centre, the facility’s hosting a potluck dinner to celebrate the Queens Service Medal Perry was recently awarded for services to the Welcome Bay community and the Spinal Cord Society.

In his typically modest manner Perry downplays both the award and the function, saying it is all about celebrating what everyone

in the community has achieved.

“It belongs to the community and I firmly believe that. The community own it all because everybody does something, it’s not because one person does something. If something good happens it’s usually a matter of a whole lot of people helping make it happen.

“To me, the potluck dinner is about celebrating the community taking ownership of the community, and we want the community to recognise that.”

While born and bred in Cambridge – where he learned the importance of looking after each other in the community – he shifted to Tauranga in 1980, settling in Welcome Bay five years later. The loyal Welcome Bay

resident now declares he won’t be leaving the suburb until he’s taken out in a box.

“It’s been bred into me that if people around you all pull together then you can get things done. But today, life’s not like that – everyone doing their own thing rather than helping each other.”

Perry was one of a group who saw the need for a community centre, motivated partly to help some young people who were getting into mischief.

“If you have people who are caring and looking after different kids, doing positive things and helping each other, then the community can only grow and be a better place for everybody.”

Telling the weather

Rain or shine? If you don’t know, and you happen to live in Te Puke, Brendan Pratt can tell you.

The 35-year-old father and husband owns and operates the Te Puke Weather Station from his Station Rd home – a venture sparked from a long-time passion for weather.

Beginning more than two years ago, the non-profit site offers forecasts, data, history and general information about the town’s weather on a daily basis.

“I’ve always had an interest in weather, and I got sick of trying to guess how much rain we had, so I bought a weather station.”

Having discovered the high cost of hosting on the web, Brendan developed his own web host, Frame IT, which now hosts a number of other sites as well as the weather station.

This is his main source of income, and helps support the non-profit weather station.

“My job kind of began from the weather station, it all evolved from that point on. It means I can do my hobby as well, at the same time.”

He says working from home allows him to monitor the station’s website (www.tepukeweather.co.nz) daily. While most of it automatically uploads, he spends five-10 hours a week on the site, and manually makes up the forecasts, using information sourced from MetService, Weather Watch and Metview.

“The weather station can do forecasting but it can be a little bit inaccurate. It can say it’s raining and it’s perfectly sunny, so I tend to do that manually.”

The site is constantly growing, and receives 70 -120 hits a day, or 30-40 unique hits.

Brendan receives compliments about the site, but also believes

many people don’t understand how weather forecasts work and often misread the site.

“I get a lot of negative feedback, people complain because they don’t understand weather…it’s from a fixed location in a fixed point.”

The station/website led Brendan into a new line of work, and he now works from home running a website development company.

A passion for weather runs in the family, with Brendan’s father-in-law operating www. ohautitweather.co.nz. The pair has launched a weather community and is inviting anyone with an interest in weather to join up at: www.communityweather.org.nz.

It includes maps and data, with information building weekly.

“We’ve only had that going for about six to seven months and we haven’t really pushed it as yet. It takes time for people to hook onto and know what’s going on.”

Op shop for SPCA progresses One could be forgiven for thinking an op shop run by Tauranga SPCA would be stocked with old bones, used scratching poles and chewed up tennis balls – but this shop is not for the four-legged.

Dogs, cats, guinea pigs – even rats – can rejoice with the news Tauranga SPCA is branching out further to help them, with the new SPCA Op Shop – offering pre-loved items for humans – due to open its doors in the next few weeks.

SPCA operations manager Margaret Rawiri says the shelter saves and re-homes thousands of animals each year, “and this will be a new revenue and support our operation”.

Greerton is the chosen location for the op shop and plans are well underway for the grand opening expected in a few weeks, says Margaret. After

receiving 90 applications for the shop manager role, Pam Bassett is taking on the position. Pam says this is an exciting new role for her because the animals need the community’s support as they can’t speak for themselves. Volunteers are now being sought to staff the shop, says Pam. “We need people to help out in the shop on a regular roster and we need general labour to help with the fit out. ” The organisation is also on the hunt for dress racks, shelving and wall units to display goods.

Pigs, possums and big prizes at annual hunt An adventurous event packed with possum and pig hunting, a ‘killer hill pig run’, an auction of items worth thousands of dollars, and tasty Te Ranga pig burgers is underway this weekend.

Te Ranga School’s 16th annual Possum and Pig Hunt fundraiser runs from July 4-7 – with an estimated 50 hunters coming from far and wide to win this year’s event.

Friends of Te Ranga School PTA member and organiser Fee Edwards says it’s a great weekend for the whole family, particularly the activity-rich prize-giving day at the Te Ranga Hall on Sunday.

“Anyone is welcome – we announce prize

winners, and have 40-plus spot prizes.”

The Te Ranga Pig Burger with a pork patty, bacon, egg and onion is gifted to hunters , and visitors are urged to buy the hearty treat, and savouries and sweets.

“There’s heaps of activities, including ‘cow pat bingo’.”

The pig has participants run up-hill carrying a pig on their shoulders, while the auction has three weekends-away bach vouchers. Other items include furniture, a family fishing trip, horse treks, spa treatments and more. Commentators are Classic Hits’ Will Johnston and Bridget Hastie.

Hunting began yesterday and runs until 10am on Sunday, with weigh-in and possum counting strictly between 9am and 11am.

“Hunters can catch their bounty anywhere– providing they have appropriate licences for using firearms, comply with firearm regulations and have landowners’ permission.” Possums can be caught by trap or gun, with fur being plucked immediately after-event.

Fee expects the school’s main fundraiser to pull in $15,000 to upgrade facilities.

Fee says it’s been a successful event for many years.

“Not to mention its positive impact on the environment through pest management,” says Fee. “The Te Puke community is amazing in their support and we extend our sincere thanks to all sponsors.”

Yarn bombed blossoms

Greerton’s cherry blossom trees are blooming in a feat of colour – after a bunch of needle-wielding ladies bombed the trees at the weekend.

The yarn bombing project is part of an initiative to add colour to the precinct and attract more people to the Cameron Road and Chadwick Street shops.

Greerton Lotto Shop owner Belinda Sands is among the area’s yarn bombers, that have been scheming – and knitting – the project since early this year.

“I’ve always loved the pictures I’ve seen of yarn bombing, so I thought it would be great to do it here,” says Belinda.

The group took to the streets of Greerton on Sunday morning to pin their creations covering the trunks and branches of trees in colourful yarns.

The area’s 30 cherry trees have been decorated in woollen knitting, crocheting or panels from recycled jumpers.

Greerton Village Mainstreet manager Victoria Thomas thinks the community art project will add colour to the precinct and attract more people to the shopping centre.

“I think it’s really exciting – and the best thing about it is that it’s a project that comes from the community.”

Waxeyes’ common sticky situation ARRC Wildlife Centre sees many injured birds suffering a range of odd ailments – but a sticky substance has been causing one native species a lot of trouble.

ARRC co-ordinator Liza Schneider says waxeyes are brought into ARRC on a regu-

lar basis, often having been injured by a cat and suffering a broken wing or internal injuries.

“Recently, ARRC have had a few that have been stuck with the sticky substance and seeds of the parapara, or birdcatcher, tree.”

She says the trees flower and fruit between August and December, releasing the sticky substance which remains active for up to eight months.

“This can be deadly as it incapacitates these delightful birds and they are unable to fly and either get caught by cats or starve to death.”

“They usually need some additional care and a few days in rehabilitation to groom and remove all of the sticky substance from their feathers.”

At just 20 years old, Claudia Pierce already sports an international yachting ranking and together with fellow Tauranga sailor Marie Kent is now part of a girls’ team gearing up to enter a regatta in the US. The girls are the first competitors from the region to enter the Governor’s Cup in California as part of the Infinity Racing team, boosted by Auckland team members Janelle Peat, Paige Cook, Aimee Famularo and Hannah Osborne.

Having already competed in regattas in France and Korea this year, and currently sitting 25th in the International Women’s rankings, Claudia heads to California next and then to regattas in New York and Sweden.

“It’s pretty cool to have entry to that regatta [in California] and be competing against some of the best teams around the world,” says Claudia.

The team recently returned from Korea where they placed eighth and won prize money – but their biggest bounty was being involved. “We learned heaps and it was our first regatta on boats that big, it was definitely a learning experience.”

Claudia began learning to sail at age 10, and wants to compete at a professional level. “It was always an aspiration of mine, obviously growing up with the America’s Cup on TV.” Now in her fourth year with the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Youth Training Programme, last year she was awarded most improved female sailor of 2012.

Claudia’s father David describes her as ‘determined’ – a characteristic he believes is needed for the sport.

“She’s always been a resilient character.”

While sponsors and fundraising helps pay the team’s way to regattas, they also have to put in their own money. The Governor’s Cup in California is on July 16-21, hosting 12 teams at the Balboa Yacht Club.

New lease of life The Cargo Shed will open its doors for the first time under new management tomorrow.

New leaseholders – the stallholders collective – were officially handed the keys by council’s property leasing coordinator Jenny Robertson this week.

Council decided in June to hand over the next year’s lease of the Dive Crescent shed to the collective as opposed to the previous managers Creative Tauranga after both parties presented proposals for the shed’s future.

It came after months of disagreement between Creative Tauranga and stallholders over the management and marketing of the shed.

In April, Creative Tauranga issued letters of notice giving stallholders until May 31 to vacate the premises after their leases expired. Cargo Shed Collective manager Kathy Sass says stallholders are excited and positive about the arts market’s future.

“It was indeed a humbling experience.

We want to prove to the critics that their [TCC’s] decision was the right one, we do not want to let them down.

“We have the rest of the winter to get the shed up to standard and will be having the grand opening of the new look shed at the beginning of October.

In the meantime, we will be open from this weekend and every weekend for business as usual.”

The stallholders’ plan for the shed is to create a venue that is multicultural, vibrant and ever-changing. They hope to include a small museum encapsulating the shed’s history.

The new shed will not feature Flux Coffee, which has been asked to leave.

Flux owner Emma Walsh says the stallholder group voted in favour of asking her to leave and she received notice this week the coffee stall would need to be out by today.

Winter’s wonder booster

Tips in the can

I had a reminder the other day from a certain medical centre that I was entitled to a free flu shot, seeing as I was over 65!

As I was feeling old – but not that old – I took up the offer, after pointing out my real age.

There are, of course, a lot of ways to boost our immunity naturally – lemons are one of them. We have all probably had a hot lemon drink when we having a sore throat or other cold symptoms.

The tang of lemon, sweetened with honey or sugar, seems to relieve and revive. And, the acid-like qualities help

marinate meats and fish; and balance dressings.

Fortunately for us, as the cold and flu season arrives so does plentiful supplies of lemons.

I have just planted a lemonade tree and in the future will have a ready source on hand, which are not only essential for those gin and tonics but also for whipping up a quick and tasty pudding.

This week’s recipe uses the juice and zest in a light and tangy lemon pudding, which is great to eat after a filling main meal.

Canned foods haven’t always carried the best reputation for being delicious or of quality and class.

But when used correctly, these low budget wonders can help create quick, nutritious and impressive dishes.

Here are some canned foods you should always keep in your pantry.

Tomatoes: Usually the chopped variety.

These are great to add to curries, soups and sauces, and come in different flavours.

Coconut Cream: A good way to add creaminess to any dish. For a thicker result, choose the normal (non-lite) versions and use less, for less fat.

Carefully fold half the egg whites into the batter. Then fold in the remaining egg whites until well incorporated. Pour the batter into a large two litre baking dish or individual oven dishes, which have been well-greased. Bake in a hot water bath (I use a large roasting tray filled half way with boiling water). Bake until golden, about 40-45 minutes, depending on the size of the container.

Renovating The historic 115-yearold classroom at Otumoetai Primary School is not guaranteed protection because it is not officially a historic place in Tauranga.

Profiling historic places The recent plan to farewell the historic ‘D’ block classroom at Otumoetai Primary School has sparked our investigation into other historic places in Tauranga.

During the next few months, The Weekend Sun will be profiling historic places around the city including some of the oldest known surviving buildings in the Bay of Plenty.

There are currently 26 historic places in Tauranga, registered with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, and more registering daily.

Historic places can be added to the list through nominations by members of the public. Nominated places are then carefully assessed against the NZHPT’s registration criteria.

Some historic places may also be scheduled on Tauranga City Council’s district plan.

NZHPT lower northern area manager Fiona Low says age is only one of the criteria the NZHPT takes into account when registering a historic place.

“Places may have heritage significance because they possess aesthetic, archaeological, architectural, cultural, historical, scientific, social, spiritual, technological or traditional significance or value. “All of these factors are carefully assessed as part of the registration process.�

Otumoetai Primary School is looking at demolishing the historic classroom after needing to extend its maximum allocated floor space area, of 22 square metres, to cater for an influx of six and seven-year-old students.

Because the 115-year-old classroom is not registered with the trust or scheduled on Tauranga City Council’s district plan, Fiona says the building is not guaranteed protection.

However, because the classroom pre-dates 1900, Fiona says under the Historic Places Act the building is legally defined as archaeological and any demolition work carried out on the classroom requires archaeological authority from NZHPT. “Although neither registered nor scheduled, the building clearly has heritage value relating to the school and its history,� says Fiona.

Escape the cold: renovate inside through winter Winter doesn’t have to mean putting all your home improvement projects on hold.

There’s still a lot you can do inside the home – and now’s the time to get it sorted.

One easy inside job is installing home storage. It’s a great way to deal with the ever-increasing build-up of ‘stuff ’, and is an excuse to use the power drill.

Here’s a hint: Think about which items you use frequently and which items you rarely touch. Aim to move those rare items out of the way and make items that get used regularly more readily accessible.

A fresh coat of paint will transform any room and can be easily achieved while keeping warm and dry. It involves a bit of thought, so plan ahead. You need to consider what type of paint you want to use, how much

you’ll need, and what colour. Your job will be made easier if you gather all the tools and materials that you need at the start, so do this ahead of time, and make sure you’re comfortable with using a roller correctly.

Walls gather many scuffs and scratches, so some sanding and washing will be required before painting can commence – as long as you plan for this, painting can be a fun and exciting home DIY task.

Tiling is another winter task for indoors. With a little work and the right tools, it’s a job that can be tackled with confidence by the average DIYer. Remember to follow safe tiling practice.

One of the easiest fruits to grow is the plum. Its easy-care with very few diseases or problems, so a good one to start with. We have a full range of all fruit trees at Palmers Bethlehem, including apples pears, plums, peaches, nectarines and all types of citrus.

Plant now, so they get well-rooted before the dry of the summer.

For best results, stake the trees when you plant to enable them to make root quicker; and do not over crop them in the first year. In fact, it is recommended to take off most of the fruit in the first year to give the trees a head start. Just let a few fruits grow to get a taste of what’s to come.

If you are short of space, you could consider training them along a fence (called espalier). And, if you want to fit in more varieties, go for a double grafted or triples grafted tree. This is where you get two or three varieties on the one tree.

Varieties are selected to grow well together and will pollinate each other to give you better fruiting. You can also ask for varieties grown on a dwarf root stock.

This slows down the growth and keeps the tree small and more manageable.

These trees are also suitable for growing in tubs or containers for people with little or no garden. If you purchase single variety trees, you would be advised to buy two trees that pollinate each other. This means that the two varieties flower at the same time, and therefore they will pollinate each other, as the trees need pollen from a different variety to form quality fruit. This applies to most types of fruit.

The best position for fruit trees is an open, sunny position sheltered from strong winds. Ask in store for more advice on variety selection.

Cats and other resourceful critters Great news this week from our friends at the ARRC. They’ve been busy getting stray cats off the street, re-homing – or re-herding – lots and even taking care of their ability to breed uncontrollably.

Apparently, they’ve de-sexed 20 cats, re-homed 40 and contained seven colonies – just in the last month.

This is good news, considering Ady and myself have also had a good June campaign. We sent about a dozen cats home – some at high speed. One of the friendly felines that frequents Robbins Park set a new land speed record across

the old bowling green. While another at Te Puna discovered it’s possible to do the ‘Jesus Jive’ – that is walking on water – as it scorched across the fish pond, hurtling its way to the gap in the fence. We also woke up several cats that were sleeping inappropriately, such as on top of fences and roofs.

And in an unusual departure from our target species, we despatched a freight train this week, and found it necessary to bark severly until it ran away. Let me tell you, it sure was making tracks by the time we’d finished with it.

As for smaller targets, there was a rat in Granny’s vege patch this week, which we ‘relocated’ further down the driveway, whereby Chad, one of the aforementioned cats, (now awake), dealt with, under a reciprocal

pest management strategy in our neighbourhood. It is a loose sort of understanding, by which we make a lot of noise and run around the rodent madly, until it scarpers and ends up in the territory of a feline that is better resourced to administer its rights.

Ady says all this is just bureaucratic speak for ‘cats are cleverer’ but I prefer to think of it as ‘outsourcing to specialists in their field’.

Anyway, great work from Dr Liza and the ARRC Wildlife Centre team, and remember if you need a ‘specialist’ for outsourcing some rodent control in your neighbourhood, give them, or the kind folk at the SPCA, a holler. They’re bound to have a savvy feline on their books that will handle the job – and be a great family member too. Just no more in our neighbourhood, okay?

Help sought in new birth for Te Puke Plunket Plans for a revitalised Plunket service in Te Puke are being launched this week, with the aim to have a new multi-purpose centre operating within two years.

The Te Puke Plunket Society administrator Lisa Powell says reduced space at various centres during recent years had cut the services they could offer, with newborn parents paying the price.

A public meeting on Monday night will launch a campaign to raise $250,000 for a new centre Queen St section owned by the Western Bay of Plenty District Council, with Lisa determined to have the funds raised and project completed within two years.

“It will mean a huge difference. It will mean we can hold various events and activities, run play groups or have coffee groups for mums.”

Small current premises mean the centre can only run programmes for newborn and 6-12 month babies, and cannot meet strong demand for toddler and preschooler programmes.

The centre is already renting a meeting room to run a Parenting Education Programme, to help parents deal with stress.

Government offloading ‘Implementation of Treaty settlements’ Relax!

Elected members attended a briefing on “implementing Treaty settlements” this week.

Termed a value added session it was conducted by new council legal advisors DLA Phillips Fox from Wellington.

Wellington lawyers have a different persona from Auckland lawyers was my take on this presentation. More relaxed and human.

As expected, the news is not heartening for ratepayers. Our council has only been informed on generalisations by the office of Treaty Settlements. Likewise Central Government has chosen not to include us in the loop. Put simply, we only hear the detail through the grapevine. More importantly, the general populace has not been included; and this lack of foresight and inclusion has the capacity to rebound once the details of these Treaty settlements emerge. Council’s role in all of this has been decided by Central Government – with no consultation – and as usual – no funding (so far).

New committee funds

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council got $570,000 to help fund a new committee to be called Tauranga Moana Governance Group. Its purpose and function is not clear, at least to me, but it will consist of elected members from council and appointees from local Iwi. We were told that it would govern joint management/ governance requirements when they were announced.

Once again not much detail was provided, although it seems the Kaituna River catchment area has been singled out for attention. Another $200,000 has been allocated for this to the regional council by

the Government to help pay for governance costs in that regard. You can bet your bottom dollar that these cost allocations will be the tip of the ratepayers’ iceberg when it comes to central government offloading more responsibilities onto local government.

Sometime after the event you will then read in the media a statement from political leaders on how irresponsible councils are in their expenditure controls – and how putting rates up is terrible.

Yeah right! Another cause for concern is that the makeup of these co-governance groups has the possibility of lack of continuity. Council-elected members will be there for three years, but with Iwi appointments there is the capacity for regular turnover of members which can mean confusion and lack of retention of background information. In the initial stages continuity will be paramount.

My take on all of this is that the Government’s plan, once the settlements are signed and sealed, is to walk away and leave it for local councils to take the heat from the community and ratepayers to pay for all the administration. The statement was made “it’s only staff time” but who do they think pays for staff time and it will probably mean more staff too!

The regional council is featuring in all of this, notably as banker or custodian of government funds allocated for governance, as outlined. It will be interesting to see how much actually filters down to local councils for real work on the ground.

By the way, councils get no choice in all of this. As a creature of government statute, councils are required by those laws to do exactly what they are told. Rumour mill has it that the Treaty settlements locally are

about $500 million. They are supposed to be “full and final” but the local iwi have told me that these settlements are 1 per cent of what was taken from them.

Deliberations were held this week on the Smartgrowth review hearings of a couple of weeks ago. I’m not on the Smartgrowth committee so I won’t comment on details other than to say, in my opinion, its impetus and effect is waning.

Good and bad

There have been benefits – some were unintended – and some negatives. Like the “15 lot per hectare target” for urban subdivision. All well and good while things were booming from 2004-2007, but not so flash in the downturn.

The target became interpreted as a goal, and the discussions that followed, hindered development in the city which was the major council affected but under Smartgrowth agreements we had to “give effect” to the plan.

Defending those existing amenities It’s taken too long to work through all of this. The regional council is unrelenting in its pursuit of removal of Westminster land rights.

They have a regular concerted effort at land grabs, and land rights grabs. All in the region’s best interests of course!

The latest is the draft Regional Council Coastal Environment plan.

They draw lines over land that would mean owners losing rights on their land – all with no compensation.

These drafts mean that owners have to employ consultants at huge costs to fight the regional council – and Government wonders why land costs so much!

Defending amenity I’m associated with a local organisation, long-established, and we have had to bring in consultants to defend our existing amenity. It’s unrelenting and if you don’t keep up they will eventually get you.

Tauranga City Council land at Te Tumu might be affected too, so there goes more ratepayer money to preserve the asset.

Great strategy too – putting it out in draft and seeking “feedback”. A real cheap peer review; and an indicator of what the regional council might get away with.

Just a brisk walk for about 10 minutes will decrease tension, banish fatigue and boost your mental alertness for hours afterwards.

Exercise immediately lightens the workload of the immune system, speeding the elimination of germs and other threats by: making you breathe deeply; stimulating circulation; accelerating perspiration; increasing muscle activity; and improving self confidence and self esteem.

Annual design competition open The Tauranga Breast Cancer Support Service is holding their fifth annual t-shirt design competition.

A $200 prize is up for grabs, along with local publicity opportunities.

“There is, of course, also the feel good factor of creating something for a good cause and it will look great on any up-and-coming designers CV,” says Lea Lehndorf, service coordinator at Breast Cancer Support Service. The winning design will be screen printed onto magenta pink t-shirts, and available for purchase during Breast Cancer Awareness month in October. Lea notes that 250 t-shirts sold out last year, “so we are planning on a few more to ensure no disappointment”.Lea says because her service is not a branch of the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation,

Positive change for disabled Community meetings are being held this month so people can find out more about a new model for supporting disabled people and what it offers.

The Ministry of Health is currently demonstrating this model in the Western and Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Enhanced individualised funding is part of this new model, giving disabled people in the Bay more control and choice on how their funding can be used.

It enables people to have their support needs met in different ways that

may better suit themselves and their families.

This approach to funding also allows disabled people to live more independently, and participate more fully in their community.

Local area coordination is another part of the new model. More than 300 disabled people and their families/ whanau have sought information and advice from a local area coordinator in the last year.

Local area coordinators, who are working in the Western and Eastern Bay of Plenty, are there to listen and to help connect disabled people with their community.

Supported self-assessment, also part of the new model demonstration, is being offered to disabled people and their families through their local needs assessment and service coordination organisation.

Community meetings on the new model are at: Arataki Community Centre (July 9, at 1 -2.30pm), Papamoa Community Centre (July 9 6.30-8pm), Greerton Community Hall (July 10, at 12.30-2pm) and Greerton Bible Church (July 10, at 6.30-8pm).

“Our volunteers are all breast cancer survivors – they truly understand what newly diagnosed women are going through. They are also a great example of how one can get back to a normal productive life after the treatment journey,” says Lea. Entries close 12:30pm Friday, August 16.

The changing face of podiatry Matt and Erin Fraser have a goal – they want to change the landscape of podiatry in New Zealand.

How? By making podiatry more accessible and affordable by opening seven days a week, including late nights, and offering both a retail and clinical aspect.

Already owning a number of podiatry clinics across the Bay of Plenty and Waikato, the couple opened their Bayfair store with the difference of also selling footwear.

“Our concept was to join the synergies podiatry and footwear to have a ‘one stop foot and ankle shop’,” says Matt.

“We have got the latest Asics shoes, the latest Brooke, New Balance, for example.”

They use video technology and other processes to find the perfect footwear for each patients/customers.

“The people doing the City to Surf, the Tauranga Half Marathon or the Kaimai Challenge – they want shoes that will minimise injury and help them perform best or just get them to the finish line – and we can do that for them.”

Their location and extensive opening hours also mean a trip to Podium Podiatry and Footwear can be done during a family shopping spree at the weekend, or late on Thursday or Friday nights.

Matt says podiatry is part of the health industry.

Storm water problems I have read with interest the comments in both Tauranga papers. The flood/storm of 2005 brought home to the council engineers that they had real storm water problems throughout the city, be it residential, industrial or rural areas.

The various problems were noted and work was started to correct the problems. It was soon realised that the in-house engineers did not have the manpower to cope with the amount of work required.

Council contracted four consultants to work in-house to “improve the management of storm water”.

Over the next two to three years, working in conjunction with other consultants in the city, these four engineers managed close to 40 projects at a cost to council of $70,000. Council called a halt in 2009, all be it that the four engineers were, at that stage, planning projects for 2013 and beyond.

The projects were delayed until 2020-

plus. There was a major storm in 2010, and again this year; and all of our work under the four engineers performed as planned. Council is between a rock and a hard place. Any major storm is likely to show up the problems not sorted between 2007 and 2009. And they have now set aside $40 million to maybe complete the job.

Over-regulation begets worse deregulation So Martin Parkes, TCC Transportation Manager, believes there is a surplus of road signs and yet does not really specify where or what they are, nor what harm they cause. He proposes removing these so-called extra signs at great cost, probably to be reinstated at some later date at even greater cost, all because it seems they need to be maintained from time to time. If these signs are such a problem, why were they ever installed, who decided on this overkill in the first place? It has to be a balance between driver confusion with too many signs vs lack of information with to few signs.

Harebrained schemes like this show

some council staff have nothing better to do with their time which is a matter that should have been addressed in the recent staff audit, with a view to saving wages and associated costs relating to inane projects like this. TCC currently employing 500-plus people has in effect become a self perpetuating empire creating so much internal work that it no longer needs any meaningful contact with it’s residents and ratepayers.

It is despairing to observe what looks like trying to ‘justify my existence’ mentality and never mind the waste and cost to TCC ratepayers.

According to Maori lore, the spirits of dead Maori travel up to Cape Reinga, (reinga means ‘spirits’), from where they depart to their overseas homeland of Haiwaiki.

Petrolheads, in particular, will be aware of this, as recently, when BBC’s ‘Top Gear’ wished to race some cars on Ninety Mile Beach, Maori got into the act, claiming that the beach was a sacred pathway to help the spirits attain Cape Reinga.

National secretly assisted Maori in approaching the United Nations to establish their indigenous rights in New Zealand. I wonder, if in their greed to obtain Maori support, they ever gave any thought to the above matter.

A Te Puke man has been ordered to pay $1000 to Tauranga man, after admitting to assaulting the victim and leaving him unconscious on a roadside during a road rage incident on May 9.

Jaydin Moran, a 26-year-old apiarist, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday morning.

Judge Thomas Ingram ordered him to pay $1000 reparation for emotional harm to his victim.

The remaining two of a Tauranga trio accused of a violent break-in at a Welcome Bay home are yet to enter a plea and are due back in court on August 5.

Shelden Chapman, 18, and James Teahu Tane Meldrum, 20, appeared in Tauranga District Court on Monday charged with threatening to kill, assault, and attempting to unlawfully take a motor vehicle.

The two, along with Corey Chapman, 22, were arrested on Sunday, June 9, following the invasion of a Korean family’s home at Waipuna Grove in Welcome Bay the night before.

The two Chapmans have been remanded in custody and Meldrum has been released on bail.

A Domino’s employee is expected to receive an apology from two men after they admitted to robbing the delivery driver on May 9.

The 24-year-old and 16-year-old appeared before Judge Thomas Harding in the Tauranga Youth Court on Monday where they pleaded guilty to one count each of robbery.

Judge Harding remanded the 24-year-old on bail until August 7, while the 16-year-old will return on July 29 for a family group conference.

Drunk doctor's transfer denied

A former Tauranga doctor who admitted to driving drunk and crashing into a building has had his bid to transfer to an Auckland court for sentencing denied.

Mustafa Sabanli, 30, is awaiting sentencing after pleaded guilty to one count each of driving with excess breath alcohol, dangerous driving and failing to stop.

He was remanded on bail pending sentencing in Tauranga District Court on August 5.

A Tauranga man facing 139 charges relating to vehicle thefts is yet to enter a plea on the charges.

Erick Hekeitrerangi Wijohn, 25, appeared in Tauranga District Court on Monday and was remanded in custody until July 22.

Wijohn is facing 78 counts of unlawfully interfering with a motor vehicle, 52 counts of theft of a car under $500, four charges of theft of a car over $1000 and four charges of theft of a car valued between $500 and $1000.

He is also facing a burglary charge and possession of a knife in a public place.

Congratulations to Alison Badger for the commendable restraint in her latest letter on the subject of impatient motorists.

She has resisted the temptation to respond in kind to the sarcastic comments unjustifiably directed to her and Graeme Weggery (Sun, June 21), because they had the temerity to express points of view which are contrary to that being propounded by Simon Loveridge.

I am still at a loss to understand his assertion that leaving home 10 minutes earlier to “waddle off to the bus stop” would somehow generate an additional 10 minutes in which to have “your cup of Chanui tea” etcetera; and conclude that this is an illustration of how easily logic can become a casualty when trying to score points with supposedly clever, but ultimately, self-defeating remarks.

With correspondence currently running at 5-0 against Mr Loveridge’s contention that all traffic should be travelling at no less than the posted speed limit, so as not to impede his daily commute from Te Puke to Mount Maunganui and back. Perhaps he will have the nous to recognise the futility of his argument; and the good grace to accept Alison’s well-intentioned advice to “slow down and enjoy the ride”.

Dear Rapiti - I read recently that by 2020, one in four New Zealanders will have a whakapapa ( descended from Maori lineage). Tauranga will have 30,000 registered Maori residents and we will all pronounce Mauao correctly.

By 2050, Maori GDP will be 50% of the total GDP of NZ, Ngai Tahu will be well on their way to owning the South Island and Tainui and Tauranga Moana will be a major player in business here alongside Quayside, Carrus, Comvita and Ports of Tauranga.

Our kids of all ethnicities will stand proudly on stage performing kapa haka together and the harbour will be pollutionfree. Illiteracy will be a thing of the past and miracle medicines available across the counter will increase longevity by 20 years.

That’s the plus side. On the other side of crystal ball gazing, just to pay homage to the same old same old Ngati Whingers who trundle out their treaty trough korero like a tired old mat in a cleaned, swept whare.

A Tauranga woman convicted of violently beating her sister during a dispute that involved her pitbull dog has had her prison sentenced reduced by six months on appeal.

Phillipa Bayley, 55, was sentenced to seven months’ jail in November 2012 after being found guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to her sister Liz Smith.

In its decision released this week, the Court of Appeal found the sentencing judge was wrong to increase Bayley’s sentence by six months due to the dog’s involvement.

No wonder the CBD is dying Every day I read about the concerns about Tauranga CBD “dying”. No wonder.

I have never ever seen a city less welcoming than Tauranga. No matter which direction you come from, be it Te Puke, Rotorua, Hamilton or Auckland, there is not one single sign of welcome. What is hard or expensive about “Welcome to Tauranga, City of Plenty”?

Our big roundabouts from each direction could be made much more attractive, especially Elizabeth Street. I would love to take to all that old shrubbery with a chainsaw.

When the flag was erected I got mildly excited (no point in getting your hopes up). There was the opportunity to beautify the area.

But no, what we got was ugly, half dead looking grassy stuff.

I would like to challenge our many talented landscape gardeners to “take on” the big roundabouts. It could be an advertising project for their own benefit.

Why would anyone plant a Kauri tree in the middle of a roundabout?

(The summit, Waihi Road – it didn’t last long). And why hide our beautiful estuary with large trees?

Tauranga is a depressing looking city to arrive in. I’m sorry – the hanging baskets look nice.

Please, no more native planting.

The place for natives is in the bush.

Mostly, they are boring and unattractive. Cheap obviously.

Tauranga has become an “older persons” city with no new initiatives or they are abruptly quashed.

I know comparisons are odious, but I can’t help comparing Tauranga to Hamilton and Rotorua. Most of the year the

The fact that they get these, and the failure rate is still high, is an indictment, and their demands for more are unreasonable and counter-productive to our country’s advancement. The billions they have received have come from the taxes of people who have worked and who would far rather see their hard-earned dollars going into our ailing health and education systems, where all Kiwi’s benefit.

Our national standards rating has gone from number 3 to 33 in the last 50 years and it’s overdue to ask why?

It is time to stop this apartheid nonsense, abolish the titles of European and Maori and act as united New Zealanders , after all we all sailed here in different boats and at different times, but are all in the same boat now, so pull together to get us back on course!

Language week: I am all in favour of Maori

Language Week to try to preserve this historic language. However, how about an English language week.

Why? Because many of our children leave school unable to speak, write, spell and read the English language properly and this is the main language in NZ. This becomes very obvious when you read applications for jobs, listen to the dreadful English announcers on TV and radio use and read the shockingly mis-spelt and badly punctuated English in our newspapers.

We should also have annual Chinese and Pacific Island language weeks otherwise Maori language week becomes just another sop to the racist radicals in NZ. If we are to ever become “one nation one people” we have to give equal opportunities in everything to all of the major nationalities who make up the New Zealand people.

Rotorua CBD is a riot of colour and how Hamilton manages to finance the miles and miles of riverside beautification amazes me. The Hamilton lake is always so beautiful and what an incredible entrance to their city with the fantastic sculptures. They must employ an army of workers to keep it all so nice. Where do the funds come from?

Why can’t Tauranga endeavor to do something similar? Why are we so in debt?

Every little tin pot town in New Zealand has a museum they are proud of. Pity we can’t afford one aye. So we will keep paying the storage fees.

I am full of admiration for the people of Tauranga who get out there in their gumboots and keep the estuary clear of mangroves and also the people who planted masses of trees along Route P. I would love to be able to join them. What would those areas be like without their hard work?

Cultural heritage When I taught at a country school in Hawkes Bay many years ago, I spent a full term on the study of Maori in some depth, language, weaving, legends, history, waiata and customs. I also attended two extra-mural courses in Maori where we were taught basic Maori carving by Dr Chris Whiting.

I never believed that this was my personal heritage, Irish/Swedish, but accepted it as a part of the heritage of my country. I did not teach these lessons to the exclusion of other peoples and other cultures.

I am therefore concerned when I hear that Maori culture and language is being introduced to children as young as five, apparently to the exclusion of the other 86% of the cultures of the other ethnic groups that make up our country. I am reminded of the Jesuit maxim, ‘Give me a child to age seven and I’ll give you the man’.

Ms Keeling-Styles, karakia is not our cultural heritage, it is the heritage of the 14% who elect to call themselves Maori even though they are at most half-castes.

Ms Keeling-Styles’ euphoric attitude to Maori culture indicates how widely Maori customs, language and culture have permeated a large number of public institutions and government departments and impinged upon our national activities, from the welcoming of overseas dignitaries to the opening of public buildings and to the exclusion of the officiating of other ethnic groups. It is time to take stock and cater for the rest of the population and for us to regard ourselves as primarily New Zealanders and for the heritage of all nationalities to be celebrated.

City’s white elephant Traffic signage: Remove the lot!

The Tauranga City Council has saddled us, the ratepayers, with a white elephant in the form of Route K. Obviously, this project was approved by the council without the appropriate Needs Analysis and Feasibility Study being carried out. The same situation applies to the Southern Pipeline and next will be the knee-jerk reaction into stormwater works. The council seems incapable of identifying affordable and realistic revenue sources prior to approving major works.

However, all is not lost in terms of Route K. The solution is to relocate the Toll Plaza back to its original position on the Harbour Bridge. With about 30,000 vehicles a day ,the toll would need be only $1 for each crossing. Route K would be paid for in about 15 years with no ratepayer funding.

This is a regional road and should be funded on a regional basis. It is not a city street to be funded by rates. The debt is compounding at such a rapid rate that the city’s finances will shortly mirror the Greek economy.

The Government has no spare cash to throw at this project. It will be a more palatable option for the Government to allow a change to the Empowering Act that will facilitate the relocation of the toll plaza.

The Government has a more flexible attitude to road toll funding now than it did when Route K was constructed. It is just a matter of the council applying pressure as has been the case with the Auckland rail loop. As the former Councillor Harris used to say “its just a matter getting on a plane and banging on the appropriate doors in Wellington”.

Why stop at some sign’s why not remove “all” traffic signage? Nobody takes a blind bit of notice of them anyway (blind being the operative word) – especially those pretty lollipops with the number in the center and “stop” signs.

The 80kph speed limit on the expressway between Bethlehem and Cameron Rd is a total joke. Drivers fly past me like the proverbial shower of sticky brown stuff; and the “stop” sign at Omokoroa Rd and SH2 intersection – well it makes a pretty decoration I guess. Drivers go straight through that intersection constantly.

I’ve heard people say one has to “stop” only if there’s traffic approaching from the north. My understanding of the Road Code is that it’s a “compulsory stop” (compulsory meaning one “must” stop) and a rolling slow down

doesn’t count as a stop.

Some drivers can’t estimate the speed of other vehicles and take some hideous risks at this intersection. I see it all the time. I make sure I stop completely traffic or no traffic. It annoys the hell out of the drivers behind me – but hey – I may have saved a life or stopped someone being seriously injured at that intersection, so I make no apologies for that.

And while I’m on the subject of traffic would everyone please learn how to use the indicator rule at roundabouts.

I have come so close to being T-boned by stupid people who don’t use their indicators correctly. If you don’t know the correct procedure, don’t use your indicator. You’re a danger to other road users and frustrate the hell of everyone.

Spying and security The newspapers, presenters on television and the radio, and the talk-back hosts are all attacking government measures to control money launderers and crime syndicates. They are all howling about the protection of privacy and human rights, and the attack on freedom. They all completely ignore the real, not imagined, attack on ordinary people by the criminals and money launders.

These are the real enemies of our way of life. In living in communities as we do, we, all of us, have to give up complete freedom to do as we like. The reward in safe community life far outweigh the loss of some “freedoms”. We can, in our democratic system, have some control over any excesses of personal surveillance.

The ballot box provides this. We have no control over criminals unless we get government to do this for us.

I can recall a well-known portrait showing a young woman on the steps of a guillotine scaffold, where she is to have her head chopped off. The words underneath say: “O Freedom what crimes are committed in thy name”. Perhaps we could paraphrase this to read: “O Freedom what crimes are permitted in thy name”.

Fantastic Not bad at all Dreadful

CLOUD ATLAS Starring: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent - Dir: Andy Wachowski, Lena Wachowski, Tom Twyker How far the Wachowskis seem to have fallen since they conquered the world with The Matrix.

Speed Racer, colourful though it was, tanked, and this hugely ambitious film was a disaster at the box office, doomed by a promotional campaign which simply couldn’t make any sense of the contents. You expect a train wreck – and then you watch it...

And it’s kinda brilliant. Confusing, long, intermittently difficult to follow, but undeniably kinda brilliant.

The film (from David Mitchell’s “unfilmable” novel) tells six separate stories in six separate time frames spanning several centuries, each of them connected in theme and character, and connected

Once upon a time the Austrian Oak used to appear in interesting films. Total Recall, Terminator, even Predator still look good. It would be nice to report that The Last Stand , his full return after a couple of expendable cameos, did anything to break new ground. But, no. Arnie’s obviously dipping his toe in fairly safe waters to start with, staging a variation on High Noon as a modern day sheriff whose smalltown is directly in the way of a fleeing Mexican bandit. And, despite despite many flaws and breaking no new ground, this is actually a lot of fun, especially the climax where Schwarzenegger reacquaints himself with heavy-calibre weaponry.

After ‘24 Hour Party People’, ‘Tristram Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story’ and ‘The Trip’, comedian Steve Coogan and director Michael Winterbottom team up again with this biopic of the larger-than-life Paul Raymond – an adult entertainment mogul dubbed the ‘King of Soho’, who in 1992 was named the richest man in Britain.

Anglophiles of a certain age no doubt fondly remember tough cop show The Sweeney , now rebooted as a movie starring Ray Winstone in John Thaw’s “Guv’nor” role and Ben Drew as his loyal sidekick, updating the original seventies setting (so beautifully parodied in TV’s Life on Mars) to modern London, all sharp and slick and steely blue. But some things never change: The Flying Squad still enjoy driving cars headlong into the middle of heists and meting out justice with baseball bats; and Winstone’s first line is “You’re nicked”.

There’s a terrific shoot-out though Trafalgar Square, reminiscent of Heat, and plenty of other cool stuff.

If there is a tradition associated with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter then FDR: American Badass is probably part of it.

But, lacking the budget of that previous film, this relies very much on cheap parody and pretty much one joke. This sees America’s wheelchair-bound president pimping his ride with rocket launchers and machine guns and heading off to battle polio-inflicting werewolves in the form of Hitler, Mussolini and Hirohito. Did I mention it was cheap? And that it really only has one joke?

by having the same actors appear in different roles.

Some of these roles are weird. Halle Berry is, at one point, white and looks a bit odd. Also, the film cuts continually between the six stories, often through strange and unpredictable links.

And its still kinda brilliant. The themes – life, storytelling, mankind’s eternal struggles – are big and bold and the film looks absolutely spectacular, from the early eighteenth century settings to way into an unrecognisable day-glo future. There is a fine cast (add in Wachowski favourite Hugo Weaving, Hugh Grant, Susan Sarandon, Ben Wishall, James D’Arcy and more) and, if you can make it through the initially-confusing first half hour you will find a thing of wonder. Check it out.

Dreamworks latest offering is a peculiar proposition which, despite staggeringly hyperreal visuals, is what probably sank it at the box , not to office. Rise of the Guardians be confused with the similarly-titled owl movie, posits a superhero outfit kinda like the Avengers but comprising Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman and – prime focus – Jack Frost. He’s an unhappy lost lad with lessons to learn from joining the other guardians to combat the threat of Pitch Black and protect the children of earth. Frankly this is pretty weird stuff, tonally confused, but a unique shtick and dynamic style make it strangely appealing.

French sounds for symphonia As winter settles in, Bay of Plenty Symphonia is whisking residents away for a romantic interlude to France.

Under the baton of musical director Justus Rozemond, guest harpist Ingrid Bauer will serenade the audience with cheerful, playful and typically French pieces in the company’s next Sunday concert ‘Enchantee’.

On Sunday, July 7, from 2pm at Baycourt, Ingrid will play Ravel’s ‘Introduction’ and ‘Allegro, and Debussy’s ‘Danses Sacree et Profane’.

Symphonia spokesperson Merle Fausett says both pieces were written more or less at the same time, commissioned by two competing harp manufacturers trying to push their harp design.

Merle says Debussy's work is a pair of contrasting waltzes with the solo harp accompanied by string orchestra,

whereas Ravel’s work is structurally more complex, featuring the solo harp accompanied by a mixed sextet.

The show also features a work, by Jean Franciax, which Merle believes has never been performed in New Zealand.

“Although one of the main composers of the late 20th Century, Francaix's symphonic music is rarely heard in New Zealand.”

Ingrid will be joined by the company’s own harpist Margaret Harper.

Among other pieces is Gabriel Faure's ‘Suite Pelleas et Melisande’ – a quietly relaxing work with beautiful, gentle, legato lines.

Calling young families

Despite 18 years of operating in the Bay – Habitat for Humanity Tauranga is in a unique situation. The charity is completing a four bedroom house which is not yet allocated to a needy family.

Normally, from many applicants, Habitat selects a family to partner with and build a suitable home with enough bedrooms to suit the age and sex of family members. Then, the family organises 500 hours of labour toward the home’s construction – with half being provided by the family itself; and the balance being donated by relatives, friends or other volunteers.

With a condition that the family has

to complete its allocated 500 hours of labour before they can take occupation of the home, Habitat make this easy by giving them six to 12 months’ notice of the likely construction date.

This enables them to work off some of their hours on other Habitat houses.

Once or twice a year, Habitat Tauranga benefits from an international “Global Village” programme.

This sees volunteers from around the world visit as a team, usually 12-20 people of all ages and sizes, to pitch in and help the local family vying for a Habitat home. This arrangement is reciprocated by New Zealand Habitat affiliates, who provide volunteers for “builds” in many countries around the globe, where poverty or disasters call, sometimes on a massive scale.

A musical kaleidoscope Tauranga Civic Choir and New Zealand Male Choir are coming together for the first time in a musical kaleidoscope this month.

On July 13, North Island members of the New Zealand Male Choir will join in concert with Tauranga Civic Choir to present ‘Choral Kaleidoscope’ at the Wesley Methodist Church.

Directed by Robert Aburn, and accompanied by Judy Barrett, more than 60 singers will perform both tradi-

tional and secular works including pieces from popular and contemporary New Zealand composers.

Tauranga singer Chris Ingram has been singing for as long as he can remember and has been with the NZ Male Choir for six months now.

Chris is looking forward to performing in concert with the Tauranga Civic Choir for the first time.

“I’ve long admired the Tauranga Civic Choir, and will at last enjoy performing in concert with them.”

The NZ Male Choir is an auditioned choir of members from across the country that gives their time and commitment voluntary for the joy of singing.

The Tauranga Civic Choir is a long-established choir in the Tauranga community, consisting of about 60 members from across the Western Bay of Plenty.

On Saturday July 13, doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets cost $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $10 for students; and are available from Wesley Methodist Church on 13th Ave, Tauranga, or on the door.

The final countdown The final countdown for 18 firsttime boxers stepping into the Baypark Arena ring next Friday has begun.

DARE Fight for Youth sees the 18 contenders including police, fire fighters and businesswomen don the gloves, aiming to raise funds in support of the Te Aranui Youth Trust.

People wishing to catch the action, and support Western Bay of Plenty youth, need to grab their tickets ahead of time so they don’t miss out.

The Te Aranui Youth Trust works in close partnership with the WBOP Police, delivering programmes aimed at reducing offending and creating safer communities within the Western Bay of Plenty.

Through the delivery of the DARE, Blue Light and Police Youth Development programmes, the Te Aranui Youth Trust provides a social service ensuring local youth become positive, steadfast, well-adjusted members of the community.

Among the fighters are Greerton fire fighter Luke Burgess and Tauranga constable Karl Blinkhorne.

Luke decided to get involved after witnessing the impact youth programmes can make when he taught youth team-work skills of paddling waka ama in Christchurch.

He is unsure of his chances against Karl, saying he had not seen him spar, but joked that one of them will

Constable Karl Blinkhorne got involved to help fundraise for Blue Light’s youth programmes.

Businesswomen Brodie Cummins and Fiona Henderson will also meet in the ring, having extolled the virtues of their new fitness regimes.

Brodie says her fitness has improved immensely from low-impact exercise to hard core training.

“I really struggled on my first few nights, but Hemi is such an inspiration and helps motivate the mind and body to defeat the pain barrier and obstacles that you thought you would never get over.

Fiona also admits the boxing training is “exceptionally physical”.

Discovering and dealing with diabetes Diabetes is a disease where your body cannot control its blood sugar levels properly – either because your body doesn’t make enough (or any) insulin, or because your cells have become resistant to insulin.

Insulin is a chemical produced in the pancreas, and it helps your body process sugars. If blood sugar levels aren’t kept under control, diabetes can be life-threatening.

There are generally two types of diabetes.

• Type 1 diabetes is when your body has stopped producing insulin. People with type 1 diabetes need to inject insulin to live.

• Type 2 diabetes is when your cells have become insulin resistant or your body doesn’t produce enough insulin to keep you healthy.

In New Zealand, more than 200,000 people have been diagnosed with diabetes (mostly type 2). It is thought there are another 100,000 people who have it but don’t know.

As we age we are at greater risk of developing the disease due to a declining pancreatic function. Some of the other risk factors include family history, ethnicity, being overweight and a history of diabetes during pregnancy. Symptoms of developing diabetes include being overly thirsty, tiredness, weight loss and increase in urination or bladder infections.

There’s no cure for diabetes, but there are things you can do to stay well. Keeping your blood sugar at a safe level means you’re less likely to have other health problems, such as kidney failure, eye disease, heart attacks and strokes.

Learn about how to recognise symptoms and how to manage diabetes (if you are diagnosed with the dis-

Tauranga Society of Artists is holding its Annual Supreme Exhibition at Baycourt this weekend.

Mayor Stuart Crosby opened the exhibition yesterday to an audience of special guests and exhibiting artists, with public viewing open today and Saturday 9am-5.30m and Sunday 9am4pm.

President Mary McTavish says there is once again a wonderful display of colour and passion in the displayed paintings.

“In the last 12 months, the artists have Artists Susan Watson, Debbie been preparing up to three paintings each to Emslie, and Doreen Watson exhibit in this most prestigious exhibition in on selection day. the society’s yearly calendar.

Accepting responsibility Responsibility. Wow, what a word!

It’s a powerful word, but sadly a lacking value in much of today’s society. In the face of some very difficult societal problems it’s easy to say, “it’s the parents fault”, “it’s the children’s fault”, “it’s the Government’s fault”, “it’s the council’s fault”, or “it’s whoever’s fault”. But interestingly, we never hear “it’s my fault”.

Recently I came across an excellent quote: “Rich yet very poor: We have taller buildings yet shorter tempers; wider motorways yet narrower viewpoints; we spend more yet have less; we buy more yet enjoy it less.

“We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences but less time; we have more degrees but less common sense; more knowledge but less judgment; more experts but more problems; more medicine but less wellness.

“We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our values; we talk too much, love too seldom, and lie too often.

“We’ve learned how to make a living but not a life; we’ve added years to life but not life to years.

“We’ve been all the way to the moon and back but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbour. We’ve split the atom but not our prejudice; we write more but learn less; plan more but accomplish less.

“We’ve learned to rush but not to wait; we have higher incomes but lower morals; more food but less appeasement; more acquaintances but fewer friends.

“These are times of tall men and short character, or more leisure and less fun, more kinds of food but less nutrition.

Oh boy, that yellow and green kitchen – it attracts the Australians, but it may have limited Kiwi appeal. Here is our advice: be careful with the use of strong colours.

Sometimes it works wonderfully well, especially if the home on offer is a little different.

For many buyers though, strong colours make it more difficult to successfully see themselves in your room. I am not saying you need to repaint, but be mindful your aim is to attract as many and as wide a range of potential buyers to and through your home to increase your chances of a swift and successful sale.

A great idea is to take a walk through and around your home and see what else is in your neighbourhood and what is for sale. Check out what sold recently and how fast it happened.

If a paint job is out of your budget, and not on the cards, remember to check the state of your paint and wall covering finish.

Glue back those pieces of wall paper that have lifted, paint where the kids (or you) have knocked the walls. Test pots can offer a really low cost way to cover some of those unsightly blemishes.

Country dreams for star-maker After a life-time’s involvement in country music, McLaren Falls singer Merv McEnteer is probably best known for organising the highly acclaimed NZ Country Music Star Awards.

More than 80 teams of hunters and fishers returned to the Top Shot Pub at Te Puna to weigh in their big four catches for the Polaris Big Four competition on Saturday.

The teams of four registered to take part in the annual competition which involved catching the biggest boar, stag, trout and pheasant.

Foot-tapping, simple, easylistening country songs have been the soundtrack to his life since he was a boy – fostering a love that has seen him perform around the country collecting a swag of awards. But he’s rating his recent success in winning the top veteran award at the Auckland Country Music Awards as one of his proudest moments.

“I had won other awards over the years but it was great to win the overall veteran award, after being involved in starting the awards in the 1980s and being convenor for the first three years.”

While he performs less now than he used to, pouring more of his time into organising, he says the thrill of entertaining and connecting with his audience is as strong as ever.

New sign unveiled in Whakamarama Launch party

‘Grease’ fans dolled up in their fanciest 1950s gear for a Grease Launch Party last Friday.

Ahead of the smash hit musical in September, The Phoenix bar on The Strand held a red carpet event, decked out with classic cars, offering the chance to meet and greet some of the cast from Tauranga Musical Theatre.

The newly installed sign, aimed at improving information about Puketoki Reserve in Whakamarama, has been unveiled in a short ceremony.

About 30 people attended the unveiling at the main entrance to the reserve on Leyland Rd on Saturday afternoon.

Event organiser Colin Hewens says councillor Gwenda Merriman and resident Barry Sharplin performed the unveiling.

“Barry is a great grandson of one of the Sharplin Brothers, who originally donated the 40 hectare reserve to the local community.

“Gwenda spoke of the great community attitude that had started seven years ago when Terry Edwards took an interest in getting some locals involved in improvements to the biodiversity in the reserve, which was under threat from possum and rodent populations.”

Colin says the new sign gives visitors an idea of the history, flora and fauna of the reserve.

The sign has been provided by

the Western Bay of Plenty District Council, and installed by Friends of Puketoki.

Colin says Mike and Todd Uttinger, of ATD Stone Masons, also helped with the sign; and Bay Sandblasting Service helped with the framing of rail track sleepers and construction on-site.

“Friends of Puketoki continue with their pest eradication, having killed more than 400 possums and a dozen ferrets and stoats, as well as feeding enough rodenticide to kill more than a thousand rats during the last seven years.”

MSC Rena Recovery Fund

The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Rena Recovery fund is to assist with costs and negative effects that were caused by the grounding of the Rena.

The fund is to assist • costs of cleaning up the Bay of Plenty waters and coastline to reduce the negative effects of the grounding of the Rena, including the spilling of oil and debris from the vessel • local Iwi population who have suffered as a result of the pollution of the coastline caused by the Rena grounding • care for local wildlife negatively impacted by the grounding • local tourism related businesses that have suffered proved losses directly as a result of the grounding.

Applications are now invited to this fund.

All applications must be for initiatives that have arisen as a consequence of the grounding of the Rena on 5 October 2011.
