Winning millions, saving the planet and pink boots How do you win $26.5m and not be a changed person overnight?

You can’t, apparently. Trevor the checkout operator, who declared he’d carry on working, failed to show up for work the next morning for his 5am shift. That’s

despite telling the nation on TV that he was determined to keep working as normal at the Huntly supermarket.

It’s an obscene amount of money for one person to win and would make more sense if 26 people won a million. That’s clearly the feeling of the rest of the country, after a television poll found the majority in favour of more, smaller prizes than the Lotto maximum of up to $30m going to one ticketholder.

The RR syndicate is quite miffed that we haven’t even won a small prize. The odds are pretty slim, made even more unlikely since we’ve never bought a ticket.

A mate tells me his ex-wife often criticised him because he kept buying Lotto tickets and never won. She’d told him that there was more chance of them being struck by lightning than winning Lotto. He told me that he’d never had luck with either of those – winning a prize, or her being struck by lightning.

“We’re not talking about a big Lotto prize or a big thunder storm here. Even a little bolt of lightning would do the job.”

Although he does believe the new husband is the next best thing to sudden death – slow death, by boredom.

But back to the lottery issue.

Some odd behaviour surfaces when a big jackpot is won. Some say people change when they win a big prize, but usually it’s just their real personalities coming to the fore.

Alcohol has the same effect.

People don’t change when

with sad tales of disaster, lost relationships and life-changing results, often for the worse.

Yes, there are some positive stories, but one thing that seems clear is that a massive windfall does change everyone.

Meanwhile, clear-thinking readers were again subjected to another dose of Earth Hour nonsense this week – when a bunch of people, convinced they are saving the planet by switching off their lights and not using their cars for an hour – actually got in their cars and DROVE to ‘celebrate’ their sanctimoniousness with a bunch of other fools, and LIT candles and other carbon-emitting burners.

As we’ve pointed out in previous years, this is a mindless piece of nonsense and should be relegated alongside Halloween and Guy Fawkes for achieving absolutely nothing for the planet – in fact it is hoodwinking the young and naïve into believing they’re actually doing some good.

Worse, those do-gooders immediately return to their ravenous consumption habits by 10pm and the rest of the year thereafter.

Never mind, they’ve soothed their consciences!

Much better, is this concept brought to our attention by avid reader Rob, who recommends we follow the example of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, promoting Human Achievement Hour.

they are under the influence – we merely get a glimpse of what they’re really like, underneath the mask. When the mask of conditioned behaviour, enforced by society, is removed, you see the real personality emerge.

Pretty much the same happens when they have ridiculous amounts of money.

The suddenly cash-drunk individual suddenly doesn’t need to conform, or put up a façade to those they may not agree with – or even turn up for work. Money would seem to fix anything – in the short term.

It’s later that the rot sets in, for those incapable of handling that much wealth.

The RR team became quite agitated while watching the rugby, to see a pair of pink boots on the pitch. Sure it was supporting cancer, but some of the fans are getting edgy.

This parting thought, from Tommy: Dear Sir Rapete, fifty years ago when I first started playing rugby for Mount 9th grade, footy boots came in one colour - black, and if someone back then had told me that props would be wearing bright pink boots in my lifetime - I would have laughed them off the paddock; yelling “Yeah Right!”

Then there’s the ref, what part does he play in this twinkle toed sacrilege when asking the props to crouch and hold, then touch and engage? How long before a little peck on the cheek is the next command?

What next? Mascara and lipstick, eye liner and bright coloured beads in their hair?

Hang on a minute mate, that’s already in the backline, alongside the fancy two steps and secret hand signals every time a try is scored. The real killer for me with the ‘new game’ is every time a perceived injustice has taken place by either a pink footed prop or a breakdancing back, there is an immediate gaggle of moaning men, all waving their arms in the air and protesting to the ref as if someone has stolen their purses.

Come on boys let’s bring back black boots, its rugby, not ballet!

A bottomless pit of...

PAPERWORK Filling in the hole left behind from the emergency repairs to the Papamoa sewer outfall last September is going to cost $30-$40,000 in paperwork.

The concrete pipe under the sand dunes from the Te Maunga treatment plant broke last September.

City contractors dug down and repaired it, but the council’s own rules mean it has had to hire a consultant to fill the hole back in.

“The difficulty is under section 30 of the RMA we are able to dig a hole and make emergency repairs,” says drainage services manager Graeme Dohnt at the recent wastewater management review committee meeting.

“But we have to get a consent to

fill the hole in.”

Lodging the consent cost $750, but hiring the consultant to organise the design and application is going to cost between $30,000 and $40,000.

Part of the reason is the location of the junction where the pipe broke, says Graeme. It is where the lighter built pipe from the outfall joins up to the heavy duty wire stressed 980 metre long undersea section of the outfall.

“The pipe in the ocean is all tensioned up, wedged up, all wired together, and that goes into the structure that broke. If you get it wrong, if you cut or distort those wires, you are going to have 980 metres of pipe that is going to pull apart.”

They have had to rebuild the whole junction structure because the original was built in 1978 and

the code of practice has changed.

“We can’t put people down there because it’s unsafe. It is 3.5-4m deep. We have to dig the whole area down to get to the bottom structure because nobody could go down for health and safety reasons,” says Graeme. “Now we have to rebuild that so it’s safe enough for the people to get down there.”

The design is all part of the consent, plus the backfill and getting the planting right.

The council is ready to go to tender on the $350-400,000 reconstruction, a document that the consultant also wrote.

Committee chairman Murray Guy says he’s using the situation as an example to show council CEO Ken Paterson where ratepayers funds are going.

Paul says there is a strong interest in drag racing in the Bay of Plenty, with many people involved both making and racing cars, so the track would directly benefit them by saving the two and half hour drive to the strip at Meremere.

“It would definitely be a draw card for people from all over especially with some big events.”

Bethlehem College student Bradley Mortensen could slip effortlessly into Shakespearean England.

The aspiring actor won the Shakespeare actor category in the annual Bay of Plenty regional secondary school Sheilah Winn Shakespeare competition – ahead of about 60 other students.

He will compete against 48 regional winners for one of 25 places at London’s Globe Theatre, where winners will take part in workshops and perform alongside international actors next year.

Mount Maunganui College won the best 15 minute performance directed by an adult, Tauranga Girls’ College won the best five minute performance directed by students (Lydia Verschaffelt and Tiana Offner), while Bethlehem College also won Best Costume.

He says the annual Easter `Nostalgia Drags’, which is organised by Tauranga’s Bay Rodders and draws about 150 cars and 5000 people, would be one great event to attract.

While Paul is the driver and custodian of the car he has nicknamed ‘The Vindicator’, he says it is definitely a team effort relying on the help of his wife Vicki, with pit crew Brad Taylor (Tauranga) along with Grease (Garry) Martin and Andrew Rea (both from Hamilton).

TECT park drag racing on track Plans to build an international standard drag strip at TECT All Terrain Park accelerated this week with the presentation of a detailed proposal to the Western Bay’s two councils.

The costings show the drag strip will produce major economic benefit to the region and boost visitor numbers.

The feasibility report estimates the drag strip and accompanying development at $7.5 million to construct, but demonstrates that with its high benefit cost ratio (7.5) that the full capital cost of the development will be returned to the community within the first year of operations. The report was commissioned jointly by the New Zealand Drag Racing Association and Te Matai Motorsport Inc, the body that represents seven motorsport groups building facili-

ties at the park’s 380 ha dedicated motorsport area.

Te Matai Motorsport chairman David Loughlin says the report, produced by Opus, was presented to the joint council’s TECT park sub-committee to keep it informed of the development.

Dave says the study shows a high benefit cost ratio, returning $7.5 to the community in the first 10 years for every $1 invested – research that backs up the anecdotal belief that many visitors will bring money into the Western Bay from outside the region.

“The money stacks up very well.

But we want to stress that we are not asking for councils funds – we do not want one cent from the council, and we will actually be returning to them a portion of revenue on top of land rent.”

The project will be funded from a mix of commercial lending, trust grants and the drag racing association – with hopes that all funding will be confirmed by the end of the year. Another two full years will

be needed to prepare the site, for earthworks and constructing the track and buildings, before the first full year programme of events in 2015.

The strip would offer an international standard track to attract top overseas drivers. It is expected to host 13 race meetings per year, including one international, two national and four regional events, plus other local club events and commercial activities.

New Zealand Drag Racing Association General Manager Chris Tynan says the Bay of Plenty’s sunny weather is ideal for drag racing because events can only be held when it is dry for safety reasons. Chris says local racing events at the track could offer boy racers a chance to put their driving skills to the test in a controlled environment and cut down on illegal road racing. He says police in Auckland had noticed a drop off in boy racer problems the nights these events were held at Meremere.

Helping wanderers keep on track A new electronic tracking system being launched in Tauranga is helping take the worry away for family caring for dementia wanderers.

After two years of fundraising Tauranga Land Search and Rescue supplied its first trackable pendant necklace to Matua woman Jill* this week- in a move her husband Jim* says is a blessing after the distress of losing his dementia-suffering wife three times. (*names changed) “It gives you great peace-of-mind. It is extremely distressful to lose your loved one when they inadvertently wander off and then trying to pinpoint where they may be.”

Search and rescue will activate the unit to track the missing person’s signal when someone with a pendant is reported missing.

The $5000 cost for the tracking system and 20 pendants has been covered by Tauranga Rotary Club and Fonterra. Tauranga Search and Rescue spokesman Nic Hume is looking for funding for more pendants and for battery costs. He says the initial focus is wanderers with dementia related illnesses, but also wants to help children with autism.

Tauranga Senior Constable Jennie Wright says it is always critical to find lost dementia sufferers as quickly as possible because of their confusion, saying it could mean the difference between life and death.

Searches for people with dementia symptoms make up 10 per cent of all missions nationally. Jennie says the number of people with dementia is set to grow with Tauranga’s aging population, but she believes the new tracking system will limit the problem of wanderers. Local students in robotics contest Some school kids eat their sandwiches at lunchtime.

These guys built an awardwinning robot.

Seumas Beedie (16), Lucas de Rijk (15) and Shane de Rijk (18), are the Otumoetai College students that make up Oats Vexmen, the team set to compete in Anaheim, California later this month in the 2012 Vex Robotics World Championships.

The boys’ robot impressed at the New Zealand National Champs on March 3, placing 7th in the world in the robotic skills challenge.

They also won the Think Award for programming, and their

teacher Deon Wessels won the Mentor of the Year Award.

They will now represent the region from April 18-20 at the event as the only New Zealand team outside of Auckland to qualify.

The students’ robot was built to pick things up and put them down again, and can run autonomously or by manual control, but team member Lucas says it’s the speed at which the robot completes the tasks that’s important.

He says he’s confident it’ll measure up to the international competition.

Man’s best friend’s best friend From front cover

Dog-lover lover Sue Murray never likes going to the dog pound.

The Omokoroa dog trainer says she always feels sad when she visits because she knows many of them may not find homes.

Realising many others felt the same about visiting pounds, or believed pound dogs would not make good pets, she has been taking some of the strays into her home to prepare them for adoption.

“I find it really heart-breaking going to the pound. It does tug at the heart strings,” says Sue, who fostered her first dogs six years ago.

From casually taking dogs in to prepare them for adoption, in the past year she has taken her support to the next level by building a partnership with Western Bay District Council’s animal services team which has given her a kennel and dog run.

“I have a real passion for dogs and animal welfare so I wanted to do this to help. Animal service’s workload is huge so I felt this gives the opportunity to give these pound dogs a better chance to be rehomed.”

It is a labour of love for Sue, who does not make a cent from her work but says she is repaid amply in the satisfaction of seeing good dogs go to good homes.

“I’ve been working with the (Katikati and Te Puke) pounds for quite a few years - but last year we got together and formed the ‘Adopt a Pound Dog’ programme.

Sue says the average stay varies – with some going to new homes within days of arrival while others stay for a month.

“The agreement with my husband is that I’m only to have one dog, but I normally have two, sometimes three but I have to monitor it or he will start talking about the divorce papers,” she laughs.

Waitaha Road hole floored The big hole in Waitaha Road.

The concrete floor on the massive hole in Waitaha Road was poured on Monday, bringing the three month project a step closer to completion.

The floor will hold the two emergency wastewater holding tanks to be installed under the first 50 metres of Waitaha Road.

The tanks were transported into town by road on Tuesday.

The wastewater system is being upgraded to reduce the possibility of overflows if there is a pump failure or excessive demand on the wastewater system.

The lower end of Waitaha Road was the site of flooding on June 24, 2011 when heavy rain

overwhelmed the local stormwater system.

After the tanks are installed stage three of the project scheduled for mid-April, involves laying a new wastewater pipe under Welcome Bay Road.

This will involve closing Welcome Bay Road between Waitaha Road and the shopping centre for a weekend. Detours will be in place during the closure via Waitaha Road and Village Park Drive.

Welcome Bay Road from Forrester Drive to Waitaha Road will be rebuilt after the new pipe is laid.

The road works are expected to take about three weeks.

The reason for the work is to give a minimum of nine hours storage capacity at all the council wastewater pump stations, bring-

ing Welcome Bay up to current national best practice standards.

In the event of a prolonged power failure, it gives the council a nine hour storage buffer before raw sewerage begins overflowing into the estuary.

Currently there is minimal storage available at the Waitaha Road wastewater pump station.

In addition, the existing sewer pipe that runs under Welcome Bay Road needs to be replaced. The existing pipe is old and has sagged causing frequent blockages.

The contractors are HEB construction. The project is budgeted at about $1.2 million. Approximately $175,000 will come from the Tauranga City Council roading budget and the remainder will come from the wastewater budget.

What don’t you want?

TCC annual three year/10 year draft plan is out for your review and consultation.

It is a broad draft of what elected members and/or staff consider could be done with your money (and permission) over the term of the plan. In reality it’s a three year only proposal because it all gets another going over in three years’ time. So I’m encouraging ratepayers to have a look at it, if not in details then at least the broad principles.

Left field

Take a left field approach for something different and tell elected members what you don’t want. It’s a given for most ratepayers that you don’t want rates increases. So what do you want to drop off to hold rates? Selling off assets to pay down debt seems an option? Or selling assets to facilitate and stimulate new economic opportunities? Interest payments alone make up 16.6% of your rates bill. That’s what I have been opposing for my time at Council. You can’t keep borrowing for non core, non self funding services and keep rates down. Central Government requirements and the Resource Management Act impose significant rating dollars too. Are you as a community prepared to dispose of the swimming pools as an example? (I’m not proposing that!) If someone else were to take over the pools and the debt, it would enable a rates reduction of around 2%.

But just to break even the new owner would have to increase admission charges by around 70%.

Maintenance

Council has tried less maintenance on reserves and sports fields. You didn’t like that and Council soon reverted to usual maintenance. Increased user fees and charges on sports fields was hugely unpopular.

Likewise a proposal for a 50 cent recreational book charge at the Library. Maybe it’s time to revise across the board all those hitherto sacred cows?

Ratepayer funding to Priority One, Tourism BOP, Budget Advisory Service, Art Gallery, Creative Tauranga, Foodbank to name a few of many community organisations receiving ratepayers money. If this community funding was chopped your rates would drop a bit (I haven’t done the maths) but would you be prepared to accept the loss of service? Not individually, because there will always be favourites, but across the board. The point to consider is that it is possible to significantly reduce rates if you are prepared to accept significant reduction in services across the board, sell assets and pay debt or produce income, lean heavily on Central Government to reduce its demands on ratepayers.

Elected members have been leaning heavily on the Chief Executive, for years now, to produce internal savings. There is some headway but its slow going.

The reason for this is the way the Government has structured Local Government.

Council has only one employee and that is the CEO. The CEO is then charged with doing Councils bidding, via its annual plan, and the CEO is the one who decides what resources are needed to implement that plan. Add to that the thousand and one items that crop up unexpectedly during the year and you can get an inkling of why the reluctance to trim resources.

Put simply it’s extremely hard to say “No.” Politically it can be suicide! So can putting up your rates to enable a “Yes”. So however you decide to do it I ask you for your input into the proposed plan. Elected members do take it all in, and despite popular urban myth to the contrary, your opinion and view does make a difference. Historically no plan has ever been agreed without major change.

Major change

Talking about major change, this week’s new Minister for Local Government is David Carter, presently Minister for Primary Industries. He is the Member for Port Hills in Christchurch and is a farmer. Hopefully his will be a steady hand on proposed Local Government reforms, and will recognise that Government’s hand on Local Government needs reform too. Local Government is not all bad and have I ever mentioned the rating system imposed by Central Government needs reform too!

Coming up this week is the Joint Governance Committee meeting between TCC and Western Bay. Among items for discussion is creation of parks like McLaren Falls being made sub regional. Huharua (Plummers Point) and TECT park (Pyes Pa) are jointly funded and it works well. In fact when you look at our joint operations it’s a pretty good model of cooperation and from the Mount’s takeover of Tauranga in 1989 it’s hard to see any savings at all from a “super-city-county”.

At Strategy and Policy Committee elected members discussed Street Use and Public Places Bylaw review.

All pedestrian stuff (no pun intended) to enable you to go about your business without unnecessary restraint.

“Offensive” behaviour is to be grounds for requiring permission. Good luck on that one. What’s offensive to some isn’t to others. The police aren’t that interested and only act upon complaint. I call it the “Steve Crow” clause. If the local paper would ignore Mr Crow and his self promotion few would know it was on. Council could once again phase all the traffic lights green and the whole shebang (so to speak) would be gone in a matter of minutes.

Next week Council will be holding a confidential meeting on the matter of Tauranga City Aquatics (TCAL) and the way to the future. Once again it’s been a slow process but that’s how the law demands it. Decisions made will be released only as this process allows taking into account legal requirements. I’ll keep you up to date.

Any questions from the public were referred to the council’s 451 page plan and any ideas were not debated but were redirected to the formal written submission process.

Unfortunately, neither the plan nor the summary arrived in time for the meetings so very few knew what they were talking about. In both meetings the only thing that most people learned was that the council is capable of making a real

It was ironic that later, when we checked plan in the section on Community Building, we found the council boasting of their skills in communicating with the public, how they responded to ‘issues emerging within our communities’ and how they were ‘supporting communities to own their own plans.’

They did admit in the document to ‘the time consuming nature of building relationships and the difficulties in engaging with some groups in the community.’

More containers overboard

MNZ Tauranga Response and Recovery manager David Billington says an observation flight this afternoon confirms swells have forced a hatch cover off the number 3 hold in the bow section, and an estimated 10 containers had been released from the same hold.

More containers are being pushed from a hold in the bow section of the Rena wreck as heavy swells batter the wreck at Astrolabe Reef.

Maritime New Zealand reports an estimated 10 containers have been lost overboard as swells of up to 7metres hit the reef, which are forecast to persist through the night.

Bridges: youngest Executive member

Police seek knife wielding woman

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges is confident he will be able to manage his new appointments as he is sworn in as minister outside of cabinet today.

In a minor cabinet re-shuffle Simon is now the Consumer Affairs Minister and Associate Minister of Transport and Associate Minister of Climate Change after being sworn in by Governor General Sir Jerry Mataparae in Wellington at 11am.

Simon, who has recently become a father for the first time, says he is ready to step up to the challenge.

Police investigating the attempted knifepoint robbery at Arataki Superette are looking for a Maori woman wearing a distinctive white bandage on her left hand in relation to the robbery.

Police say the woman entered the superette on Ocean Beach Road at about 3pm on Saturday brandishing a knife at the shop attendant, who then activated the panic alarm causing the offender to flee empty handed.

“It’s not showing in the photo, but there’s no question someone will know who this person is. We want to hear from anyone who knows who this person is,” says Detective sergeant Darryl Brazier.

Crime rates drop in Western Bay

Mount Maunganui Police are investigating the theft of large quantities of milk and other dairy products being stolen to order from a storage depot in Totara Street.

In the last seven days more than 600 two litre bottles of milk and cream have been stolen in three separate overnight occasions from the facility.

Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier says police believe the offenders used a utility or truck and trailer vehicle to transport the products.

Crime in the Western Bay of Plenty has dropped with the area recording a 13.8 per cent reduction in recorded crime in 2011.

According to the latest Police crime statistics the Western Bay of Plenty is leading the downward trend in the greater BOP region, which overall recorded a decrease of 5.6 per cent or a total of 36,534 offences in the 2011 calendar year.

Rotorua recorded a five per cent decrease but the two other Bay of Plenty police regions, Taupo and the Eastern Bay of Plenty, recorded increases in crime.

Waioeka Gorge may close again

The NZ Transport Agency is warning the temporary diversion past the slip on State Highway 2 in the Waioeka Gorge may close again because of severe weather forecast this week.

NZTA Bay of Plenty state highway manager Brett Gliddon says heavy rain and wind conditions could scour the temporary road.

“If this happens, we may need to close the road to do repairs.

Milk stolen from Mount Maunganui

First 2012 kiwifruit to leave port

Zespri’s first shipment of kiwifruit for the 2012 season is due to leave the Port of Tauranga for Japan today, carrying around 800,000 trays of Zespri Gold.

The 2012 harvest is now underway in the Bay of Plenty and Hawke’s Bay, after starting in the Poverty Bay two weeks ago, with this year’s harvest expected to reach 20 million trays of Zespri Gold (hort16a) kiwifruit.

The industry is expecting to harvest around 70million trays of Zespri green kiwifruit, around 3.5million trays of Zespri organic kiwifruit (making zespri the largest exporter of certified organic produce from New Zealand) and around 2million trays of Zespri’s newly-commercialised varieties.

This is due to chocolate being toxic to dogs, so all you pooch lovers out there who may be thinking about treating your best friend to some, please don’t!

Rena debris puts stop to yacht race The Auckland/Tauranga yacht race has been cancelled due to the danger of yachts striking debris from the container ship Rena.

About 10 or 11 containers were washed off the ship in Tuesday’s gale with the debris field being blown west towards the Coromandel Peninsula, and the path of the race fleet.

The race was to start in Auckland late Thursday morning with the leading yachts expected to arrive either late Thursday night or early Friday depending on conditions.

Race favourite Team Vodafone Sailing pulled out, before the race was cancelled on Wednesday, by race

organisers due to concerns they would have been sailing through the debris field in the dark.

The 2012 race would have been Team Vodafone’s third attempt at the race record of nine hours and 35 minutes, set in 2005 by the maxi Zana.

Team Vodafone owner Simon Hull says he feels for the Tauranga Yacht and Powerboat Club.

“They have put in a huge effort. It’s a great club and they make everyone who enters the race feel very welcome,” says Simon.

The race was first sailed in 1921; the annual Easter event established in 1985 and sailed annually except for 2001 because of a forecast gale.

Time to think 10 Year Plan submissions I have just started analysing the Regional Council’s Ten Year Plan and the more I read, the more compelling is the argument for structural local government reform.

This could well result in the Western Bay of Plenty as a stand-alone Unitary Council (combining Tauranga City, Western Bay of Plenty District Council, and integrating the western part of the Regional Council. I know that the Regional Council needs to look to the big picture, but Western Bay ratepayers

(including those in Tauranga City) seem to being asked to continue to unfairly fund Rotorua’s environmental degradation.

Road safety initiatives in the Bay One frustrating part of my job as a councillor is I often have to miss a meeting because it clashes with another higher priority meeting.

Take the Joint Road Safety Committee meeting in Tauranga which I missed recently because of a conflicting Regional Council workshop. Attended by repre-

sentatives of the Tauranga City Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, NZ Police and NZTA, the Joint Road Safety Committee oversees the annual road safety programme in the western Bay. The agenda looked really interesting.

It looked at how the Councils could work together more efficiently and effectively through consolidation of programmes and

joint service delivery to provide the desired road safety outcomes while coping with expected national funding restrictions.

This is the way forward for many local government activities in the future, so I applaud this initiative.

Gardening tips for winter

Easter is the time when many of us get into the garden to do a tidy up before winter, and with daylight saving now over we will soon be getting that autumn feeling as the months cool down.

Make the most of any sunny spells to hoe the garden so the weeds wilt in the sun - as the ground gets wetter this job becomes more difficult as even a small shower of rain can revitalise weeds.

Tidy up the vege garden, harvest the last of your summer veges - pumpkins, marrows, potatoes and onions - and store in a cool dry place (like the garden shed) for use during the winter.

The veggie plot can be very productive during winter, so now is the time to sow winter crops like beetroot, broad beans, cabbage, carrots, swedes and turnips.

Also, buy or raise your own brassica plants, which mostly do better in cooler temperatures, to plant directly into the ground and continue to grow winter varieties of lettuce under polythene tunnels.

If you do not wish to carry on with the vegetables during winter the best thing is to sow a green manure crop such as lupines or mustard.

This can be sown now by spreading the seed by hand over the ground - a mixture of the two is good - and then rake well into the surface.

Leave over winter and dig into the soil before the lupines flower; if it is left any longer it can start to go woody and takes longer to break down in the soil.

The green manure puts nitrogen into the soil plus the organic matter form the plants themselves.

Tidy up the flower garden by cutting back dead flow-

ers and don’t forget that it is now time to plant bulbs for the spring.

Make sure you mark where you plant them with a stick to avoid planting something else in the same spot.

Don’t forget that autumn is the best time of year to move plants around the garden or to plant new plants.

This gives them plenty of time to establish a new root system before summer, as they will still grow new roots during the winter even if the tops are not growing.

Autumn’s blaze of colour Gisborne’s Eastwoodhill arboretum is hosting Easter festivities.

Dana describes Eastwoodhill as a jewel in Eastland’s crown and wants everyone in the country to put it on their list of ‘must-see’ places.

The park’s founder Douglas Cook, who took over the land in 1910, envisioned his botanic collections at Eastwoodhill as a safe grounding for northern hemisphere species threatened by the possibility of war.

It is internationally recognised as a safe haven for an array of plant with the largest collection of northern hemisphere trees south of the equator.

School holiday lantern making Following the success of Papamoa's first lantern festival last year preparations are well underway for another event in June.

Lighten Up Lantern organiser Ally Rogers is expecting this year’s festival to be even more successful and already has people lining up to join the lantern-making workshops that start in late April.

“I'm super excited about this year's festival – I've got a couple of helpers for the workshops so we will be able to help even more people make their own lanterns.”

The holiday programme, which is free for 5-13-year-olds with a $20 plaza receipt, is being held in Palm Beach Plaza’s shop 23a in the Plaza Centre Court next to Paper Plus.

Ally began the festival to provide a community focus and give Papa-

moa people a chance to meet.

“I just wanted to do something because I could see a lot of people coming into the community and struggling to get to know others. I wanted to give people a reason to come together and connect.”

School holiday sessions are being held from 9.30-12.30pm and 1-4pm from April 10-12 and 16-18. A $20 receipt from any plaza shop is needed to take part in the holiday programme.

Easter fun at Katikati Bird Gardens

Can you find all the hiding bunnies?

The ninth annual Great Easter Egg Hunt takes place at the Katikati Bird Gardens this Easter Sunday. Starting at midday it runs until 4.30pm, or when the eggs run out!

The hunt is on for coloured balls and life-like bunnies. Children need to find a coloured ball hidden in the gardens which can be exchanged for an Easter egg or chocolate bunny back at the café. You can also search out the life-like sisal bunnies, and if you count them correctly you can enter the draw for the giant chocolate Easter Bunny.

If you haven’t visited for a few years you may be in for a pleasant surprise. The terrace café overlooking the gardens is a great spot for a light lunch or afternoon tea and is one of the few cafes in the area where you can eat outside, in a beautiful garden environment well away from the main road. There’s a children’s play area next to the cafe, a special gift shop and even golf carts for hire. Not forgetting the 10 acres of beautiful gardens and friendly birds to enjoy!

Just 30 minutes from downtown Tauranga, the gardens are situated directly off SH2 between Katikati and Tauranga.

EOL has progressively set up free Wi-Fi zones along The Strand and other downtown locations and is now offering businesses the

chance to have discreet booster repeater equipment installed on their premises free of charge.

“Establishing a comprehensive public Wi-Fi network will allow people to connect to the internet using their smart phones or other devices whenever they visit Tauranga’s CBD – whether they are in a cafe, restaurant, retail store or simply walking along the street,” explains EOL’s managing director, Terry Coles.

Some like it hot These days it’s not hard to find prepared curry pastes in the supermarkets that produce outstanding results and you will find quite a variety of different types.

The traditional method of toasting spices, pounding chillies, and making your own paste is almost a lost art. The fresher the paste the more fragrance and flavour develops, and once you know the basics it’s easy to add or subtract ingredients to refine your own unique paste.

From my travels in Asia and especially Malaysia watching street vendors prepare their own pastes, and blending together different spices, I have created a base curry for beef or lamb that works well every time.

This week as daylight saving kicks in and Autumn winds blow cool I thought it timely to share this simple curry recipe.

By simple I mean it’s not as simple as getting a prepared paste, but at least making your own paste you can make adjustments and you know exactly what goes into it.

Nonyan style beef curry

6 serves Ingredients 1.5kg diced rump steak ¼cup cooking oil 2 brown onions finely chopped 4-6 cloves of garlic cloves 3 cm chunk peeled ginger 2 cm chunk galangal (frozen from Asian store) 1tablspoon coriander powder 2 teaspoons turmeric powder 2 star anise 4 cm piece of cinnamon stick 6-8 birds eye chilli 2-3 kaffir lime leaves 3 discs palm sugar 2 tablespoons lime juice small bunch fresh coriander chopped salt and pepper for seasoning.

300ml coconut cream Method To make any sort of curry paste a mortar and pestle is almost Essential.

A modern blender can do some of the work but where is the love? The clonk, clonk and repetitive smashing and pulverising of the ingredients is quite satisfying; much like using a punching bag to vent some anger, working at it hard does produce a finer paste in a short time and the washing up’s a breeze. chillies, star anise, galangal cinnamon stick, pound up as much as you can adding drops of lime juice. Toast off the turmeric and ground coriander briefly in an oven tray, add this to your mix.

In a large pot, batch seal off all the diced beef, seasoning well and set aside, brown off the onion in the same oil then add the paste. Cook until fragrant around 5 minutes stirring to prevent burning then add the meat back in. Add around 2 cups of stock or water and reduce the heat to a simmer, stirring occasionally for about an hour then add the coconut cream and the palm sugar lastly the chopped coriander cook for another ¾ of an hour at which time the curry should be thick and tender.

Serve with basmati rice and accompany with naan bread and yoghurt.

From the finest of vineyards This week’s wine is a lovely 2011 Huntaway Reserve Pinot Gris.

The wine represents a blend of Pinot Gris from some of the finest vineyards in Gisborne.

The blending of a small proportion of Gewurztraminer was included to increase the complexity of this wine, this added spicy notes and an oily texture to the palate. The inclusion of a proportion of malolactic fermentation also added to the texture complexity without diminishing the varietal character of the Pinot Gris. The result is an elegant, approachable wine, distinctive to the Gisborne region.

Straw in colour with green tinges, the wine has a bouquet of pear, spice and ripe stone fruit, with musky floral hints.

The lingering underlying savoury complexity leads to a

spicy off- dry finish.

Ready to be enjoyed now, or cellar for two to five years to develop the savoury honeyed characteristics.

It would be lovely with a bowl of chicken curry. Enjoy!

Children are being encouraged to put their creativity and entrepreneurial talent to use over the school holidays to make items to sell at Arataki Community Centre’s new children’s market.

Community centre manager Matthew Strange said the market, which will run for the first time on April 22, offered an opportunity for Tauranga’s youth to develop small business skills.

“It’s going to be a great chance for them to get creative and innovative,” says Matthew.

“As a kid I sold plums on the side of the road. I see my nine year old niece making her own clothes, knitting and making jewellery and thought it would be great to help encourage more kids to get creative.”

He says there has already been interest from children making jewellery and sculptures from drift wood and suggest another option would be selling old toys.

“There is such a wide range of possibilities, selling produce from your garden,

crafts, face painting, magic tricks, busking or jewellery.”

Mia Mollekin, 9, is making peg knitting, jewellery and potting plants, to sell at the market to raise money for an iPad. “I am hoping there will be heaps of kids having stalls and lots of families come along.”

Tauranga woman to be NZ’s fastest drag racer Tauranga-based drag racer Karen Hay is attempting to break the record of New Zealand’s fastest woman ever on a quarter mile.

The current record stands at 205.52 mph and has remained at that for 22 years. The record for New Zealand’s fastest woman on a quarter mile was set by Faye Grant in a long wheel-

based dragster. Karen is attempting to break this record in a short wheel based car on the 8th of April 2012 at the Nostalgia drag races held at the Fram Autolite Dragway in Meremere.

She is feeling great about the upcoming race, “We’ll definitely break the record, we’ve definitely got it”.

Karen has been involved in drag racing for ten years and holds two class records the first BB/A record was at 6.83 seconds which she recently reset at 6.65 seconds and holds the CC/A record at 7.41 seconds. Karen’s car is called a Brogie Roadster built in the USA and is the fastest Brogie in the world. The 1927 Brogie Roadster she will race has a 482 big block Chevy motor. “It’s just a normal day really, I try not to think about it and just focus on racing.”

Karen says she practises at the race track in Meremere and is definitely confident about the race.

Home sweet home...

After six weeks of fantastic white water training, some sunshine and a lot of rain in Australia, I finally headed back to Tauranga.

My time in Australia was gruelling - I ended up with some minor injuries, a vast improvement in technique and some flat water sprint racing under my belt.

The Oceania Championships for flat water sprint kayaking were an interesting experience and surprisingly I actually enjoyed the short stint away from

white water. I technically and physically wasn’t up to the world champion standard in the K1200 and 500, but I did manage to get to the finish line with relatively little hindrance.

I made it back to Tauranga in one piece and settled into a nice training routine back home.

Every second day I make the trip to the Kaituna River at Okere falls, and every other day I head to Fitco gym on 14th Avenue and Waimarino for some flat water training.

There is now less than two weeks until I head over to Europe for the year and it still hasn’t quite hit me. I hope it does soon though – I would not be impressed if it hits me on the start line and I suddenly forget how to paddle!

Only 10 days to go before I leave for London!

There is no excuse for taking it quietly over April with Sport BOP promoting adventure activities as part of its new Play in the Bay promotion.

Sport BOP recreation advisor Nicki Scott is encouraging everyone to get involved, saying there will be something on for all ages and interests.

“It’s time to get outside, outdoors and enjoy the Bay of Plenty – we’ve got things from walks, we’ve got have-a-go laser tag and all sorts of great events to encourage people to try new activities,” says Nicki.

As part of April’s month of activities special deals are being offered on Adrenalin Forest’s aerial ropes obstacle course (which reaches 25 metres in height) or on Paintball Extreme’s Thursday social nights when you bring a copy of the Adventure Month Calendar.

Nicki, who recently did the aerial ropes course herself, describes the course as offering something for all abilities which boosts participant’s confidence as they scale the heights.

“Because you start low and work your way up you can go as high as you feel comfortable. You get through one and you want to push yourself to do the next. It’s such a buzz and great for your confidence.”

Nicki says Play in the Bay had got off a great start in March with a lot of interest in the initial month of walking and running activities and expects support for the programme to continue to grow.

“The response has been really positive.”

Common muscle problems - Part 2 abundant The two most common chronic muscle problems are Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and Fibromyalgia (FM).

Both FM and PMR are autoimmune diseases and result in muscle pain but that is about where the similarities stop. PMR mostly affects those over 60 and common symptoms are stiffness and pain commonly around the neck and shoulders especially in the mornings. Around 20% of people with PMR also develop Temporal Arteritis. This is caused inflammation of the major arteries which pass through the temple causing vision problems and even blindness.

The major medical therapy is the steroid prednisone which blocks the production of inflammatory cytokines usually with a rapid reduction in symptoms. Many recover in a year or so but others have this for an extended period or find that it recurs after a period of remission. People on statin medicines need to be aware that these can exacerbate PMR symptoms which is why I invariably add CoQ10 to those with PMR who take statins.

Nutritional therapy complements the effects of prednisone by reducing immune system production of inflammatory chemicals. We add a wide range of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds to assist energy production and to lower inflammation.

Serious fatigue is a feature of PMR and increases in energy is often the first benefit people feel from nutritional therapy.

LIVING with John Arts

FM is a lot more complex. These are often referred to as FM syndromes as they involve other problems especially Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. There are relatively few medical treatment options but the most common are tri-cyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline taken in single evening doses to treat both pain and insomnia.

FM is more difficult to treat with nutritional therapy as it is not a simple inflammatory problem.

It appears that muscle mitochondria are damaged by free radicals which impair muscle fibre function which reduces energy and causes pain (M. Cordero et al, 2010). I have found people get real benefits from intensive multi-antioxidant therapy including CoQ10, OPC, resveratrol and many others. I always add broad spectrum vitamin and minerals and often high dose MSM before bed to help with muscle oxygenation. Curiously, as with PMR people with FM often notice an improvement in energy before any reduction in pain. Give me a call if you need help.

Rapacious ACC behaviour astounding I am absolutely astounded by the behaviour of the ACC in the case of man who has had a stroke, lost a leg can hardly think or speak and the rapacious ACC are trying to force the poor man to get a job. What employer in his/her right mind would employ such a person?

People could die as a result of having such a person in a place of work or for God’s sake driving a truck.

What the hell is going on in the mind of the idiot who suggested such a person be let lose behind the wheel of a truck?

What would health and safety do in the event of an accident when people were killed? Sue the backside of the firm and fine them hundreds of thousands of dollars that’s what they would do. Now if Labour were in power that man would not be expected to work. This is the most disgraceful uncaring activity I have come across in my life. That man deserves compensation for

the stress his wife and he have been put through by this rapacious Govt dept.

This action is reflected by my comments in a previous letter that until the right drop their distaste for the aged, the sick, the poor or hard up and the infirm and the left drop their distaste for the rich, the achievers, the intelligentsia - there will never be sanity in the NZ Governments.

Ratepayers’ dilemma Tauranga City Council asks for feedback on the Council’s deliberations.

The Mobile Library is being sacrificed.

It is essential in helping educate kids and services to schools for a miniscule $250,000 per annum.

At the Matua Hall in 2010 at a meeting to hear budding Councillors Mayor Crosby said “trust them for competency.”

The Council purchased Bay Park Stadium in September 2007 and paid $12,000,000 with no deposit. Over the years since September 2007 up to March 31 2012 at an average interest on this non performing white elephant is 6% amounts to $3,600,000. The loss of operating costs $5,000,000 at an average interest again of 6% up to $300,000 making a total loss of $3,000,000.

The Art Gallery cost $800,000 this last year alone, shows a grand total of $4,700,000. I am unaware of the total contract for this “gift”.

How many other wasted money projects have not been disclosed?

How many struggling ratepayers have an all expenses trip to China as our Councillors did? What benefits have ratepayers gained? Was the all costs paid for the tour of China just for Councillors or was it for them to learn to use chopsticks?

Tauranga City Council is the second highest rated in New Zealand. Who makes the decisions, the CEO on $398,000 salary or City Hall staff? If this elected TCC performed in Mexico or some other overseas country they would be taken out into the desert and giving lynch law.

Obviously the TCC is long overdue for replacement by a business minded representatives and not domiciled by just pen pusher or paper shufflers and puffed up

by Councillors. Highly overpaid staff in City Hall should be reduced by half to 240. It is not necessary or economic to have 480 warming seats.

I am just another blind ratepayer sucker.

Sir Graham should relinquish knighthood Sir Douglas Graham and three other directors of the failed Lombard Finance company were recently found guilty on four charges of making untrue statements in their company’s offer documents. Having being convicted of a serious crime automatically strips him of his 90 per cent international travel rebate that he was entitled to as a former MP. The next step is for Graham to immediately relinquish his knighthood, rather than have the Prime Minster be placed in a situation of requesting the Queen to strip him of it. It’s not a good look to have a convicted criminal

being called “Sir” when he’s picking up rubbish in the hospital car park, while undertaking his community service work.

Sir Douglas Graham is on record as saying “the directors regretted that investors may have been misled and were out of pocket.”

After saying that, he now has the audacity to suggest he may appeal his convictions, clearly this man has not come to terms of the gravity of his actions, with no remorse or concerns whatsoever for the investors he mislead.

Firearms ‘incompetence’ Not Christian practice His letter against John Mills, Des Vize commits the crime he accuses Mills of. To claim Hitler as Christian is to fail to apply any logic in examining what Hitler thought and did.

Even a cursory examination of those actions would show many of them to be diametrically opposed to Christian teachings. He may as well claim Hitler as a pacifist. Euthanasia is condemned by all Christian denominations as against Christian teachings and ethics. One cannot be genuinely Christian and support this practice. In an atheistic society with no supreme being, human beings become gods by default, individually and collectively.

Ethics and morality are whatever anyone decides them to be, they can change according to individual or collective whim. It is within this framework that practices like euthanasia can be supported, they cannot be within a genuinely Christian community.

Those dangerous heels Those abominable shoe stiletto heels have gone from eight to 10cm high to now 13 to 15cm high! Just why do those females wear those abominations, and what possesses them? Are they oblivious of the damage to their feet; they are really going to suffer in their later years!

That hideous fashion invention should be banned from sale, and all those stiletto heels cut down to a maximum of 5cm.

Combined with those heels is the uncontrollable long hair which many women have, most tuck one side behind an ear, with the other side almost covering one eye. They look wonderful when they tie their hair back behind their head, as we can see their full face.

They are suckers for fashion change and very gullible. It is very distracting when we see a female being interviewed per TV camera or one reporting, to see them constantly flicking their hair back from their eyes or face, only for it to fall back again! Surely, why don’t they use those spring tiaras, head bands, clips, or preferably a hair cut.

Some females look very untidy when we see their unbrushed, uncombed, scraggly hair, which looks like some could do with a wash!

Police firearms incompetence: Recently where young Mr Naitoko was “accidentally” shot dead by a “mis-directed” bullet fired by a policeman surely raises the issue of effective firearms training?

I began hunting as a young teenager, and there were basic rules in my training, one being a very important one, “treat every gun as being loaded”, however, the following two must apply uniquely in this case? * Identify your target. * Ensure that the ‘over-shoot’ area is clear of life or property.

(High powered bullets travel more than 10 miles! ) The second rule applied in this Nai-

toko/Police case more than the first.

No difference between being a policeman or not.

If rule #2 had been followed, young Mr Naitoko would be alive today!

Also, it would be appropriate to now ‘re-raise’ the unacceptable issue where NZ ceased to register firearms, and instead, for decades now, all that is registered is a person.

The result is that firearms have inevitably fallen into the hands of people who are not registered to own them, and further, we must have to wonder at the ‘expertise’ of those in charge of firearms?

Solution: Register all firearms; mandate certified training to all owners.

Council ‘blunders’ affect residents Council blunders affecting residents: As predicted WBOPDC still has headin-sand over growth related spending due to unrealistic internally-generated population increase figures. RUA councillors and ORA members queried them 10+ years ago and were told to shut up.

Now Council wants to pretend there’s just a short-term hiccup and all will come right in four years.

A vocal, packed meeting in Omokoroa last week should be catalyst for strong messages to council re their current overspending.

As usual council make all the platitudes of prudent fiscal management and cost trimming etc but the smoke and mirrors still exist.

Their 10yr financials are hard to grapple with, they need to tell us exactly what last year’s income and expenditure

was and where it went and how much we owe. They are asking for submissions on what we think. It’s blindingly obvious what should be done, trim spending to match actual income.

The recently published 10yr plan gives 3 options for raising more money, they are all the same; get ratepayers to pay more. Not a skerrick of info on how council could trim spending to suit present income, there are some things we could live without.

Council should reduce it’s borrowing ratios and cut all growth-related spending and only reinstate when cash is in the bank.

Please take the pressure off ratepayers, better still be the first NZ council to actually reduce rates and give newcomers a reason to settle here.

His wife told me that he has been waiting for a hernia repair for three years, and despite that, made the effort to have a sense of humour, but his good lady said the stress was very bad.

Bay musicians in demand I was down in Gisborne last weekend at the Harbour the Beat Jazz Blues & Roots Festival, which was a reminder that, however much we take Tauranga bands for granted here, our musicians are held in high esteem elsewhere.

It was a fantastic little festival actually – two days of top class sounds in four venues all within a couple of hundred yards of each other.

Music included Paul Ubana Jones, jazz singer Caitlin Smith, Auckland Americana duo Tattletale Saints (who used to go under the name Her Make Believe Band), Darcy Perry, Rotorua’s Mike Garner, and Wellington’s Darren Watson Band, who are doing great things at the moment, about to head over to Australia for their second festival this year.

And then there was the Tauranga contingent: Brilleaux, Kokomo and Grant Haua, all of whom drew big crowds of appreciative punters. What was equally striking is that the two international guests, Californian Diana Harris – who was backed by Brilleaux – and Chicago gospel soul singer Sister Jacqui Baldwin – who sang with Darcy – are both currently living in the Bay. Diana has been based here for the past couple of months, doing various gigs with local musicians backing her, while Sister Jacqui is living at the Mount and hoping to get New Zealand residency. Also on-stage with Sister Jacqui (and at one point leading a dynamite soul set during the festival’s big jam session) was Porina McLeod, another of the Bay’s finest voices.

It was a nice to be reminded of the respect with which music from here is treated round the country.

You find the same thing at the big annual Bay of Islands Jazz & Blues

Festival where, in addition to those bands who were in Gisborne, you might also find Miles Ahead, Rob Smith’s band The BBC, and even Woody Woodhouse. There’s a lot of music here that we shouldn’t underestimate.

And there’s a lot of stuff coming up over the next week or so that might have slipped kinda under the radar with many people focused on bigger events.

If you want to get away from it all over Easter yet still catch some music, you could do worse than take a trip towards Katikati and on the way – on the corner of Lockington Rd and SH2 – is Browny’s Brewery, Café & Motorcycle Museum. I must confess I hadn’t been there till recently when they started regular Sunday sessions focusing on local singer/songwriters. It is actually rather cool; they’re friendly people and do good food.

Over Easter weekend they are having a couple of days of music: On the Saturday afternoon you can catch John Michaelz, Englishborn singer Jessica Ross, who is just recording her first album, and Dylan Israel. On the Monday it’s John again, along with Kelsi Bullot, who has also been recording recently, and Clark Reid, a gravel-voiced singer with country leanings who was up being filmed at Soundtree last week and can be seen on the latest episode of their webcast of Bay music at www. soundtreelive. There’s no cover charge at Browny’s, with music running from 2-5pm each day.

First up, American singer Kristina Olsen is coming to the Historic Village Hall on Wednesday 11 courtesy of the Tauranga Acoustic Music Club. Kristina has been here before (though not for a while) and is really worth seeing, a superb multi-instrumentalist (great slide guitarist!), terrific songwriter and compelling singer. Tickets are $20.

The following night (Thursday 12), gypsy jazz group Bonjour Swing launch their new album, The Flame, at Le Chat Noire, the very groovy French café in Greerton.

They’ll kick off at around 7.30pm, play a few songs from the album and then a jam session is likely to ensue. Everyone’s welcome.

And then, on Friday 13, Katikati Folk Club are hosting Sanders Alley Kahn, the dynamic trio who headlined the recent Acoustic Music Festival. Their music ventures everywhere from the Celtic heartland to the Mississippi Delta and all are consummate instrumentalists and great singers.

The concert takes place at the Katikati Bowling Club, 7.30pm.

With Winston Watusi Fantastic Not bad at all Dreadful

WARRIOR Starring: Tom Hardy Joel Edgerton, Nick Nolte It’s taken me a few weeks to get around to Warrior, partly because of its 2 ¼ hour duration but mainly because I’m a bit off fighting films at the moment. The thought of macho bruisers lengthily pummelling each other in a ring was temporarily too much. But I should have listened to all the good reviews I saw – this is terrific stuff.

The specific fighting in question is Mixed Martial Arts, which basically seems to mean that the fighters can do pretty much anything they want, kicking, punching, wrestling, whatever it takes. The protagonists are Hardy and Edgerton – estranged brothers – and the obligatory crusty old trainer, Nolte, is their alcoholic father (also estranged: this is a family not unfamiliar with dysfunction).

As that suggests, the real story, much like Errol Morris makes fascinating documentaries about fascinating people, be they folk who run pet cemeteries, Robert McNamara in Fog of War, or the crazy Mormon-kidnapping romantic at the centre of Tabloid . The lady in question is Joyce McKinney, a former Miss Wyoming who travelled to the UK to “rescue” the imagined love of her life from what she regarded as a Mormon cult (it would seem he was actually on regular missionary work). The film, as the title suggests, takes a wider view, delving into the bizarrely sensationalised newspaper coverage the events inspired while trying to dig out the (equally bizarre) truth.

last year’s The Fighter, is familial, the two brothers fated to meet in the tournament final, and their history is well drawn. Hardy (soon to be the new Batman villain) and Edgerton are both convincingly working class American (given they’re a Brit and an Aussie) and muscle-bound, while Oscar-nominated Nolte is effortlessly gruff and layered.

The fighting throughout is brutal and authentic and by the time of the climactic showdown the combination of emotional heft – both brothers have compelling sympathetic reasons for needing to win - and physical conflict is genuinely exhilarating.

One can only assume that after The Fighter the Academy felt the same way as I did about fighting films, otherwise this would have won a swag of statuettes this year.

countryside. What with granny spouting incoherent warnings about “The Lady of Sorrows” and the strange screaming noises at night it would seem something is amiss.

The title is a clear Evil Dead reference and, sure enough, the group are soon under siege from demonic nasties. Sadly this lacks any of Sam Raimi’s wit and imagination while none of the cast show a hint of Bruce Campbell’s goofy charisma. From script to execution it is an unconvincing mess.

And the superb documentary is now out Senna on blu-ray. As someone with no interest in motor racing and no real memory of the Brazilian world champion driver I was still totally captivated by it. The on-track battles between Ayrton Senna and Frenchman Alain Prost, the off-track politics and backstabbing, and the sheer charisma of the young driver are brilliantly captured.

Dramatic and moving stuff.

Gruffy coming to Bay

Never judge a book by its cover? This one, you can!

A 4x4 gazes the length of Lake Pukaki up to far-away Aoraki Mount Cook gleaming in the morning light.

But where’s the driver, and who took the picture? Steve Bolt clicked the camera and the 4x4 is his faithful Gruffy, who brought him to this spot and all the others in the book.

Steve spent his ‘spare time’ of a year travelling the length and breadth of New Zealand in Gruffy – the clue to his name is in the number plate FTGRFY! During this time he collected hundreds of images of New Zealand’s landscape for a presentation DVD, that sits in the back of the book.

You may have seen Gruffy about the local streets and the back roads, having brought Steve to settle here, making the Bay of Plenty their new home.

This Easter weekend, you have a chance to see some of these images, and more, at a showing in The Mount.

As well as canvases, and other works, he’ll be selling signed copies of his book “Travels with Gruffy”. This book is already widely distributed in local bookshops, perfect for you or that overseas gift.

Dining out on jazz This Easter make sure you have a fantastic time downtown Tauranga by basing yourself at Bravo in Red Square.

Easter is global and Easter is here In the Bay of Plenty (and across the rest of the globe by the way) it’s Easter-time, and it’s holiday-time here in the Bay.

Yes, not all peoples and faiths keep an Easter, but it is Easter. Easter is global – the scripture tells simply that, “Jesus died for the sins of the world;” at Easter. The event of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection occurred at a given point in time, history if you like; it’s a geographically, chronologically, and seasonally located significant event. Easter’s significant and celebrated globally.

Easter is its own significance, one which can be discovered and engaged. Seems that if we do not set-out to discover and engage the significance that is Easter, we will invest Eastertide with one anyway. Now, if we were in the northern hemisphere its “traditional spring ideas” offer choices of significance

such as; “Easter, it’s a celebration of rebirth; new beginnings after winter; that’s what the word ‘Lent’ really means, spring – new beginnings. It all happens at spring, chicks, birds, bunnies, new flowers, lambs springing, eggs, new wardrobe . . .” But, we know that last time we looked out a window or at a map, it was obvious, we are in the “deep south” ... its autumn here. The northernspring choice maybe good-significance, but not global-significance, and “Easter is global.”

So “what’s the Easter-global significance to be discovered and celebrated?” Being computer literate I “Googled” – “What is Easter?”

Here’s my non-Wikipedia discovery...

“Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar. It celebrates the resurrection from the dead of Jesus, three days after he was executed. The Easter story is at the heart of Christianity. In Easter celebrations there are two important days, Friday and Sunday. Easter Sunday marks Jesus’ resurrec-

tion. After Jesus was crucified on the Friday (now known as Good Friday), his body was taken down from the cross, and buried in a cave tomb. The tomb was guarded by Roman Soldiers and an enormous stone was put over the entrance, so that no-one could steal the body. On the Sunday, Mary Magdalene, followed later by some of Jesus’ disciples visited the tomb and found that the stone had been moved, and that Jesus’ body had gone. Jesus himself was seen that day by Mary and the disciples and for forty days afterwards by many people. His followers realised that God had raised Jesus from the dead. Christians call this the Resurrection.”

How to feel secure amid the storms of life We all experience ‘storms’ in life, and sometimes we’re really knocked by them!

It is because He knew His heavenly Father loved Him, and that nothing could therefore happen to Him that was outside of the Father’s An amazing story is told of Jesus sleeping in a boat right through a storm. His disciples were seasoned fish- will. It was about trust! Trusting God in ermen, but were terrified. It was a big storm! The key life makes a big difference. While we all experiences trials, our trust that God is question is how Jesus could sleep so peacefully when in control, and with us, entirely changes our perspective! But how can we know this? More than just giving promises, the Bible accounts history from four thousand years of history, so we can check God’s track record. Beyond just the idea of security, a basis for believing it is given. God is still around, and He has a plan!

As examples of His promises, He says He works all things for the good of those who love Him. So while sometimes He does make us successful, sometimes

His goal is to make us stronger through failure, or better equipped to help others… Yet in all circumstances He says He cares, He sees, He helps, He takes notes, and He will reward! He has not abandoned us. It simply boils down to trust! Friend – God knows what you are going through and does care. Trust Him. You will get through! “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior” (Isaiah 43:2-3).

Glorious Love Ascension The greatest outpouring of love released a fire of grace and mercy upon the nations of the earth.

The Father’s love poured out of a heart of agape unconditional love for the anguish of man’s sin.

The Father saw the devastation, pain and anguish of those He had created in His image. His merciful heart released unbridled love to woo people into the serenity of His forgiveness. Love and mercy was unleashed by the giving of His precious beloved son, Jesus Christ. The Father gave His son as a

ransom for our sin. Jesus Christ nailed to a cross, crucified, a spear brutally thrust into His side, releasing His blood upon the earth.

This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem Luke 24 v 46.

The blood of Jesus Christ cries out upon the land today for the harvest of souls.

Hearts to be cleansed and washed in His blood. Do you hear the Father’s unconditional love of grace calling to you today? A captivating love that washes over your soul

releasing you from the burden and grief of sin. Love that is for all nations to reach out and accept.

It is a free gift. Christ paid for it on the cross. Love as revealed in Jesus, a selfless, agape unconditional love that is self-sacrificing. In a moment you can go from feeling trapped in the prison of your mind to the palace of peace in your heart. Peace and healing can filter into the midnight hour of your circumstances.

God alone knows the personal secrets of the heart to enhance with a love encounter that heals the broken frayed edges of

our soul. Jesus Christ suffered death, burial and resurrection and through believing in Him you can have the plans that have died, the treasures that have been buried, resurrected causing you to ascend in glorious triumph with the fire of the Holy Spirit.

It is time to light the match for nationwide revival. It is time for fresh fire to herald the return of our king and for carriers of the fire to rise up with fresh strength.

Bethlehem Baptist Church set to perform Easter weekend at Tauranga’s Bethlehem Baptist Church traditionally attracts visitors from all walks of life, not just those on the Christian path.

Pastor Craig Vernall explains why of all the events in the Christian calendar, Easter is the primary Christian celebration.

“Easter is the dramatic account of Jesus' final days where he was put on trial and killed for his claims to be the Son of God. But the story didn't end at his death for he was raised from the dead three days later.

“The Christian community interprets this event as God’s son dying for our sins and offering us forgiveness and a new life with him.”

As in previous years, the Church’s Easter celebration has been designed to involve the wider community; this year the Church’s creative team have put together a dramatic presentation titled ‘The Story of the Garden and the Tale of the Risen King’, aiming to appeal to a wide audience.

Using drama, dance and music the weekend will focus on the wrestling that surrounds the Easter story – from Jesus wrestling with his choice, his followers wrestling with their understanding of unfolding events, right through to the modern day when many of us still wrestle to connect with God. Split into two parts, the first presentation will be on Good Friday during two services, either at 9am or 10.45am with the second part delivered on Easter Sunday also at either 9am or 10.45am.

The Church will also be screening ‘The Passion of the Christ’ at 5.30pm on Good Friday – all families are welcome and the Church will be providing a fun and interactive children’s programme to keep the under 12s entertained.

This is a free community event and everyone is invited to come to Bethlehem Baptist Church and learn a little bit more about the Easter story.

Liza founded Holistic Vets back in 2003, and she and the rest of her team make use of the best of both worlds.
