We can’t say enough good stuff about our local police. It’s often a thankless task, dealing with dickheads and no hopers… and that’s just the politicians. The criminals aren’t much better. There’s always a bunch of critics waiting in the wings, sometimes with the sensationalist media to egg them on, just waiting for a cheap shot. Not here at Sun Media. We are fanatical supporters of the local constabulary and salute the excellent job they do, day in and day out, dealing with the scum of society, the lawless and the misguided… and the just plain stupid. Let’s face it, a lot of you are just plain stupid. RR readers excluded, of course, because you are all exemplary citizens and right with me on this.

Great news from the local police and the crime stats, showing an overall drop throughout the Bay. Tauranga was more or less steady, just a 0.3 per cent increase, which some news sources chose to hype up as a “rise” (as if 0.3 is significant?) Hey, not in my book, with a rapidly growing population at the end of an economic downturn.

Good news locally is that murders have dropped from six a year, to one. This is a vast improvement, especially in election year when you’d expect strangulations might have shown an upturn.

Fortunately, the only choking making the news recently appeared to be in San Francisco. The national crime stats have been declining for several years now and it’s a real positive sign our police force is making major inroads into crime.

We’ve unfortunately had to call upon their services a few times recently, and can only rave about the prompt, professional response and follow up to some dodgy situations. I’ll be up the road to personally thank them, as soon as I get this ankle bracelet off.

Coastguard benefits

The local police have been at the centre of other good news this week, with the annual Tauranga CIB charity auction, raising an astounding $280,000 this year, thanks to the dedication of Blackie and some generous

donations from a heap of local businesses and individuals.

Special mention must go to Farmer Motor Group, every year giving away a new car which is an enormous commitment to the cause.

Congratulations to stalwart organiser Peter Blackwell and team for their tireless efforts in again organising a sensational fundraiser for our local community. We had a great time at the auction, along with our Coastguard friends, one of the major beneficiaries of this year’s event. And I can’t think of a more deserving recipient.

These guys and gals on the radio and on the rescue boats, help keep us safe on the water, and deserve all the help they can get.

Our region’s heart and soul is based on the harbour and the coastline; it’s the reason so many of us love this place. The people who dedicate so much to keeping us safe on the water need all the support we can muster.

Our thanks to Blackie and the police for teaming up to keep the Coastguard, FYD and many other deserving causes afloat; and roll on next year’s 20th anniversary auction, which will top a combined total of $2million raised for the benefit of our community.

The trouble with Coutts

The trouble with Russell Coutts is not that he’s a successful professional sailor. Or that he’s hornswaggled the cup from Team NZ too many times. Or that he’s essentially working as a hired gun for the highest bidder.

The trouble with Russell Coutts is he got there on the back of Kiwis. Preyed on our loyalty and good nature. Stabbed us in the back.

Yes, it was a long time ago and it’s all just history. However, so is Russell Coutts.

The trouble with Coutts, in the minds of the majority of New Zealanders, is he and Butterworth milked us for all we were worth. Took advantage of the goodwill the late Sir Peter Blake pained over decades to build – and spat in the Kiwi eye.

That doesn’t mean we hate him.

Good on him, he made his choices.

NZ as a united front also can make decisions. And Coutts will be back part of TNZ when hell freezes over. I’ll be the first clamouring to back anyone except the team he’s on. Right now, the Italians are looking good as a second choice, should Russell muscle in.

It is all history and we’ve moved on. We’ve also learned from history, as astute people do.

Although, his knighthood, along with that of Sir Douglas The Rogue, should be surrendered on the grounds of “disservice to New Zealanders”.

Mr Coutts and a couple of his disloyal mates had the entire country scrambling in the early days to raise money and fervour for what we thought was a tight, dedicated bunch of die-hard sailors ready to “stand by us” through hell and high water.

They grovelled and played on emotions and sold red socks to our grandmothers.

Turns out, some of them weren’t all that committed to our team and country. That’s fine. We now know where we stand – and where you stand. On the outside, Mr Coutts.

The use of aeronautic, electronic stability controls for foiling yachts is the equivalent of allowing performance enhancing drugs for athletes. It should not be allowed in sailing. His glib dismissal that the scrutineers “didn’t find any” on the boat doesn’t wash with me. He is still to deny the technology was used; and just because the measurers couldn’t see it, doesn’t mean it wasn’t there!

As far as the majority of NZers are concerned, you’ll be back on the NZ team when hell freezes over.

Crucial escape Tsunami report weights petition

Papamoa East residents struggling to get an alternative access way or exit from their suburb think they may get help from GNS Science’s update on tsunami hazards.

The report released this week finds the Papamoa coast could be exposed to tsunami of a height of eight-10 metres instead of the five metre wave Bay of Plenty Regional Council planners have been basing decisions on until now.

The report also states waves of the increased size are likely to be of close origin in the Kermadec Trench; and says tsunami sirens will not be able to warn people soon enough to save themselves by leaving the beach.

Papamoa East resident Paul Melhuish is petitioning the city council to bring forward the extension of Te Okuroa Drive to join with Golden Sands Drive and says the report only adds weight to his argument.

And with an escape route – the wider the better.

“A formed road is going to be pretty crucial because

it’s flat, smooth and not full of obstacles.” The report shows this is needed sooner rather than later, he says.

“We do try to look at it from a broader sense, not just focussing on one admittedly unlikely event, but wider looking at people’s safety in any event. It’s about getting people in as well. If the road is gone we will have to fly them in.”

Key points from the report are the probability of a tsunami has not changed, but instead a maximum possible size of a tsunami in the Bay of Plenty has increased; and a large tsunami generated very close to New Zealand will arrive before an official warning can be issued.

People must know if they are at the coast and feel a strong earthquake (it is hard to stand up), or a weak earthquake that lasts for a minute or more, then get to high ground or go inland – do not wait for an official warning, says report compiler William Power, of GNS Science. William says historical evidence shows a dangerous local or regional tsunami occurs in New Zealand every 40 to 50 years on average.

Keeping water safe

Tauranga motorists warned Tauranga Police are issuing a warning to motorists that if they are caught breaching the road rules they will be fined.

“There is no excuse for it and we will be taking a low tolerance approach to any breaches,” says Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.

“The 15th Avenue and Fraser Street intersection is highlighted in the top 20 intersections in the country based on social cost.

“While police do a responsible amount of enforcement at that intersection, Tauranga motorists can expect to see us there more often – and anybody breaching the traffic signals will be issued with an infringement offence notice.

“I urge people to take extreme care out there.”

He says a lot of crashes are intersection-related crashes – and people need to take care at intersections and at high speed areas.

A programme to provide subsidised swimming lessons in Tauranga schools should be piloted before Christmas, with hopes to roll it out to more schools next year.

The ‘Teach our Children to Swim’ programme is being pushed by swim school operator Jenni Clarkson and project coordinator Leigh Drury-Martin, who are determined to bring low-cost quality swimming into Tauranga schools to ensure children develop the important life skills.

Leigh says with summer just around the corner it is “a little frustrating” to see fundraising

applications held up while the organisation obtained charity status, but she’s optimistic of ultimately attracting the required support.

“We are hoping to have it up and running by the middle of next term – we want to do a pilot in about three schools; then expand it into more schools next year.”

Leigh says she’s received an overall positive response but is surprised by the number of schools that have said they’d be unable to take part in the programme if their students had to pay a small charge if there are insufficient funds to subsidise it.

“We are talking about maybe a $1.50 a lesson, which is a small price to pay to learn a critical life skill.”

Swim school operator Jenni Clarkson says at least $4000 needs to be raised to get the required equipment and to subsidise the first lessons.

“All the feedback has been positive and very encouraging. We just need people to catch the vision and help with getting funding in so that we can grow this whole project.”

Tauranga City councillors are expecting to hear on Monday how they might be able to attract a major event to Baypark this summer – to be held in conjunction with the hugely successful D1NZ drifting round – but without needing to grant organisers $30,000 in cash.

The youth-focused action event, which organisers want to keep under wraps until everything is confirmed, is among three large events that full council will be asked to rule on over funding at the last council meeting of the triennium.

D1NZ organiser Brendon White says the drifting round is confirmed with the funding request to go towards infrastructure costs for the new event, which he says is aligned closely with a freestyle motocross competition being held alongside the drifting.

“We see this being an iconic annual event, but there are some big initial costs we are looking for help in covering.”

The issue for the events support and community investment subcommittee is the $30,000 will take out a large proportion of the oversubscribed $55,000 events funding budget.

CEO Garry Poole is preparing a report exploring with private investors the options available to support and encourage an event the committee wants to support and encourage.

Other big applications include $50,000 for the Battle of Gate Pa commemorations. For more information on the drifting event, see page 24.

Armed hold-up at Mobil station

Rena Two years on Tomorrow marks the second anniversary of the container ship Rena’s collision with Astrolabe Reef.

Police were last night looking for the man who held up the Mobile service station on Chapel Street.

At about 8.15pm on Wednesday a man walked into the service station and presented a knife to the sole attendant at the counter. Detective Sergeant Nigel Grey says the man demanded cash when he presented the knife. “The attendant cooperated and handed a quantity of money to the offender, who then walked out the door with it. “He [the offender] is described as a male Caucasian, in his early 20s, of medium height and medium build. He was dressed in a dark coloured, long sleeve hoodie, with Adidas on the back. He had black jeans, with black and white shoes, and dark coloured beanie and sunglasses.” No one was injured during the hold-up.

Car flees Te Puna crash

A 48-year-old man is in Tauranga Hospital with serious leg injuries as police look for a car believed to have hit the motorcyclist in a crash on State Highway 2 on Thursday. Police say the motorcyclist was travelling towards Tauranga about 6am when a car pulled out to overtake a heavy truck travelling in the opposite direction, striking the rider. Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Ian Campion says the crash occurred near Quarry Road, north of Te Puna.

“The motorcyclist managed to stay upright until he crashed into a culvert some distance down the road.”

Ian says the alleged offending vehicle failed to stop and carried on towards Katikati.

Brookfield vet robber jailed

A Tauranga man will serve two years and nine months in prison for his part in the knifepoint robbery of the Brookfield Veterinary Centre.

Colin Thomas Borthwick, 23, appeared in Tauranga District Court on Thursday for sentencing after earlier pleading guilty to one count of aggravated robbery. On July 24 this year Borthwick entered the vets on Otumoetai Road wearing a balaclava and armed with a carving knife. The female worker was forced to put $250 in a plastic bag, along with drugs used at the practice, before the pair fled to a waiting vehicle driven by a third person.

Confessed swan killer fined $3500

The Katikati man, who admitted to purposely running down a black swan with a jet boat and causing distress to six others on Tauranga Harbour, has been sentenced to four months community detention and fined $3500. Carl Williams, 36, appeared for sentencing in Tauranga District Court on Thursday after earlier pleading guilty to two charges of wilful ill treatment of an animal. The ill-treatment charges relate to an incident on Tauranga Harbour on Boxing Day last year where Williams was filmed driving a jet boat speeding towards back swans.

Council election papers stolen

Two mailbags containing 290 City Council voter packs for Welcome Bay residents have been stolen from NZ Post. The bags contained an estimated 400 items which had been sorted for delivery to 195 households in 9 streets in Welcome Bay. The 236 metre ship carrying 1368 containers and 1733 tonnes of heavy fuel oil hit Astrolabe Reef, about 25km from Mount Maunganui, travelling at 21 knots on October 5, 2011. The ship eventually split in half with the stern section sinking below the waterline.

The Rena used to be visible from the mainland in good conditions, but a

second salvage company, Resolve Salvage and Fire, working on the wreck has reduced the bow section to below the low tide level in August this year.

Today there is nothing left to see above water apart from a few buoys indicating the wreck site. The larger stern section slipped down the reef – and whether it will remain is yet to be determined.

The Government has instructed the owners and insurers, Daina Shipping and The Swedish Club, to remove the wreck. The companies are now in the process of gathering information to plead their case in the Environment Court.

After the oil spill, the containers on the beaches, the clean-up, the international media attention on the court cases prosecuting the captain and first mate – the Rena saga is undertaking one of its final acts in heading back to court.

More than 300 locally living little blue penguins spent a couple of months in the specially built penguin hotel at the oiled bird facility that sprouted at Te Maunga as the environmental effects of the Rena’s oil pollution were dealt with.

The penguin releases back into the wild in a series of events during the 2011/2012 summer was one of the signs things were beginning to return to normal after the Rena grounding.

This summer Astrolabe Reef remains off limits while massive crane barges cut off the ship’s accommodation block. In December the second round of court action is expected to open with the owners and insurers filing a resource consent application to leave the remainder of the hull deep under water. Several community groups have signalled they are going to oppose this.

By March this year owners and insurers announced Rena salvage operations have cost $300million, making the Rena the most expensive salvage operation – apart from major oil spills like the Exxon Valdez and the Gulf of Mexico spill.

As Peter Cramond prepares to unveil 16 of the Rena grounding’s smallest oiled victims, carved in stone, the raw emotion and sense of environmental loss still linger.

“There was a time when I just couldn’t talk to anybody because it was just such an emotional thing that I felt,” says the Papamoa sculptor.

“The whole debacle of that ship hitting the reef was a hell of a shock and the feeling I had was like I had lost a family member, because the beach is my family and I have lived here for well on 40 years.”

Remembering disaster with art For many Tauranga artists the memory of the Rena disaster is still strong.

Their emotions and responses to the environmental disaster of the Rena grounding on Astrolabe Reef on October 5, 2011, are being displayed in the exhibition ‘Two Years On’.

The artists’ artworks will explore the idea that people’s actions – good and bad – impact directly on the environment. The exhibition focusses peoples’ attention on individual responsibility during the Rena grounding, the importance of taking care of the environment; and it is an acknowledgement to the many people who responded by volunteering in the extensive clean-up operation.

Tauranga Moana Iwi Leaders’ Group chairman Awanui Black’s 18-year-old son, Tawera Black, is featuring on artist Tania Lewis-Rickard’s short film ‘He Hokinga Mahara’ which means ‘returning to remember’.

Tania says her film speaks about the effects the Rena grounding had on the whenua (land) and the iwi.

“I just remember Motiti being hit the hardest. I’ve never been to Motiti Island, but you just have that connection and this is my way of connecting.”

Tania, a teacher at Tauranga Girls’ College, says her students helped clean-up the island which she says was still not fully restored months later.

Tell Jakob Mahu he should be focused on something a little more serious than comic books and chances are he will politely tell you where to go.

The self-taught Tauranga artist lives and breathes comics and has been aiming to make it his life since he was seven.

“They can have their own opinions, but it’s what I love. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do. It’s what sparks my imagination and I’m going to draw until the end of my days,” says the 21-year-old, who had his first attempt at making a comic with creative partner Dhaivat Mehta, also 21, six years ago.

Later this month, together with Dhaivat and two other members of Tauranga comic book group Digital Devil Ink, Jakob will release two new issues as part of the Tauranga Arts Festival, offering comic-lovers their first chance

to get a copy of a unique mix of Western and Manga storytelling and graphic art.

After five years studying filmmaking in the US, Dhaivat has recently returned to Tauranga to throw himself head-long into the world of comic-books; a field he says uses the same visual language as films – but without the complexity and expense.

“Comic books are a great way of expression; and especially with Jakob and me our imaginations are so in sync,” says Dhaivat.

While Dhaivat was based in the US the pair collaborated on their first graphic novel ‘Lucid’, which went on to significant success with 50,000 downloads. This was quickly followed by downloaded issues of Digital Devil’s on-going vigilante series ‘Crysin’ and issues of the comedy series ‘Ninja Suit.’

The pair is excited about publishing new comic books ‘Crysin’ and ‘Rustic’, at the arts festival market on October 26 at Masonic

Park, with hopes it will introduce new readers to a world of original characters and stories.

“Our festival launch paves the way for future issues of the comics, our Digital Devil magazine and a smartphone app featuring full chapters from our ongoing comics,” says Dhaivat, who ultimately hopes Digital Devil will grow to the point where it can produce films.

“We eventually want to become an avenue for up and coming comic book writers and artists to get their work out there.”

Jakob describes it as hard graft, but worth it.

“So keep the pencil and ink nearby and don’t lose heart.”

The Digital Devil team has recently been boosted with the skills of contributing artist Georgia Corby and editor Brian Nieremeijer, who are working on the ‘Crysin’ title. Details: www.facebook.com/room9entertainment

Focus on dotterels An expert on New Zealand dotterels will speak on the species’ future at the Birds Bay of Plenty meeting next week.

John Dowding has studied the species for 30 years and will give an account of the numbers and distribution following the national census in October 2011, and an update on the birds taken into captivity following the Rena grounding.

He will also look forward to the future of the birds, with a steadily increasing human presence on the coastal environment.

Sam’s sublime sevens For someone not accustomed to the fleet footed art of sevens rugby, Tauranga’s Sam Gavigan is making sure he grabs his biggest representative opportunity with both hands – and a big set of lungs.

The 24-year-old is one of the fresh faces who trained as part of this week’s 19-strong New Zealand Sevens training squad preparing for the opening leg of the 2013/14 HSBC Sevens World

Series on the Gold Coast.

For the born and bred Tauranga player, the selection caps off an impressive first season of the Bayfair Baywide premier rugby competition.

The former Aquinas College student returned to the Bay of Plenty after five years of studying at the University of Otago.

Playing his trade for the Mounties this season the loose forward soon dropped out of the Bay of Plenty Development Side after being tapped on the shoulder by coach Sir Gordon Tietjens.

But nestled among the likes of sevens experts captain DJ Forbes, Tomasi Cama and Tim Mikkelson this week, Sam is aiming to make a strong first impression with Gordon’s advice ringing in his ears.

“It’s just almost like soaking up as much as you can including all the processes and skills, as sevens is a pretty new concept to me.

“He [Sir Titch] just said to me to not hold anything back and just blow it out.”

With the side missing several players through injury or ITM Cup commitments, the weeklong camp leaves the door open for Sam to press for a position in the final 12.

The squad was whittled down to 12 yesterday ahead of the first tournament of the 2013/14 HSBC Sevens World Series at Skilled Park, Gold Coast on October 12 and 13.

Two new sports and a two storey pavilion will be sited at Omokoroa Sportsground in the future, according to Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s newly reviewed reserve plan.

Tennis courts and a skatepark will join football, athletics and cricket facilities – and the existing hall will be replaced with a sports pavilion.

WBOPDC recreation planner John Raupatu says community consultation has seen council staff identify four “big ticket items” to focus on.

“These are proposed tennis courts, skate park, playground and relocating the hall.”

The hall is owned by a recreational society and members tried to develop a grounds review about five years ago but never got anywhere, says John.

“We’ve tried to design this plan to reflect some of this [prior work].”

He says the hall is the most difficult feature, with stakeholders wanting it relocated, “but we took the view relocating the existing building to expectations

wasn’t do-able”.

“The idea was to create a centrally located two storey sports pavilion by building a lower floor with changing rooms and plonking the existing building on top. But we found it will be cheaper to replace the hall.”

John estimates the replacement cost at $595,000.

“We would ask that a public toilet be designed in this; and we’d contribute an estimated $91,000 for it.”

A nearby tennis facility may happen sooner. “To build the courts is $220,000; this is council’s responsibility and we have $190,000 existing funding for that.”

John estimates the skatepark’s price-tag is $200,000, which would “have to be a 50/50 split with the community”, as there’s currently no budget for it.

But council will fund a $100,000 playground, he says.

Post-elections, council will be asked to approve and adopt the review in the 2014/2015 long-term plan.

A Mount Maunganui Primary School teacher is using a nation-wide mini collectable programme as a way to educate students about business and economics.

As part of New World’s 50th birthday celebrations the supermarket has released a fun mini collectable programme – the ‘New World Little Shop Collectables’.

The programme sees shoppers receive a free mini grocery item for every $40 spent in store. There are 44 individual items to collect.

Miniature bananas, apples, cheese, marmite and other tiny collectables have been donated by the students’ parents for use in the classroom’s supermarket.

Teacher Jan Rae says students are learning how to manage a supermarket by categorising meat, dairy and vegetable products; and stock taking along with communication, literacy and mathematic skills.

“It’s just been so neat. They don’t even know they’re doing maths.

It’s also teaching them life skills.

“What it’s also created within the

school is a trading base.”

Children are exchanging the miniature collectables across the school with double-ups being swapped for something individuals may not already have in the supermarket. Fly Buys is set to be introduced into the pretend supermarket next term.

Jan is hoping to gather enough mini collectables so each student can buy a small trolley full of mini groceries at the pretend supermarket.

Reeling in family fun Tales of catching the big one are beginning to form in children’s imaginations as they prepare to dust off their tackle boxes for the Kidz Need Dadz Fishing and Fun Day. On Saturday, October 12, the inaugural event casts its first line down at The Strand where children up to age 12 can bait up and try their luck at catching the longest fish on the day.

Kidz Need Dadz Charitable Trust chairperson Reagan Douglas says the day highlights how important it is for parents to spend quality time with their children.

Kidz Need Dadz is a charity dedicated to fostering father/child relationships through support, education and fun.

Mount Maunganui Primary School’s Lesley Howat.

40 years at school For 40 years Mount Maunganui Primary School teacher Lesley Howat has been known for her gymnastic abilities – but you won’t find her doing cartwheels in the corridors any more.

Starting as a teacher in 1973 – and bringing her love of gymnastics into the school – Lesley is looking forward to celebrating her 40 years at Mount Maunganui Primary School with its 100th birthday this month.

Lesley no longer competes in gymnastics herself but has organised national competitions in Tauranga and has been instrumental in beginning the ARGOS Gymnastics Club.

Her accolades include a New Zealand Coaches medal and Gym Association Service award for 30 years in gymnastics.

Known for “doing the splits in class” in her earlier days’ teaching Lesley also coached softball and netball teams and organised many lunchtime tee-ball competitions.

While still teaching, and adding the odd gymnastics class in at school, the room 13 teacher has another sporting interest – waka ama.

Katikati pets blessing St Peter’s Anglican Church is holding its annual Pets Blessing Service this Sunday (October 6), at 10am.

Reverend Brendan Gibbs says everyone is welcome to bring their pets to be blessed. “At past services we’ve had donkeys, horses, goats, parrots and even a goldfish in a plastic bag.”

Brendan says for the service to be relaxed, he advises cats be brought in cages and dogs be on leashes.

Introduced to the idea of paddling an outrigger canoe by a relief teacher last year – Lesley joined Tauranga Moana Outrigger Canoe Club’s ‘Golden Master’ women’s team.

“I love it, it’s great. They call us the golden age group.”

Competing in 2012’s Waka Ama World Championships in Calgary the team gained a silver medal in the double hull 500 metres race.

This year travelling to Hawaii to compete in the 30km race at the World Sprint Championships the team placed sixth.

Lesley trains every Tuesday and Thursday and one weekend-day at her Sulphur Point club.

As if teaching full time and waka ama training isn’t enough, Lesley fits in a gym session four mornings each week before class.

Lesley says her sporting interests helps to build a bond with her students. The children are excited about her competing in the waka ama championships – they even checked up on the team while Lesley was away. “They were excited for us.”

Walkers turn pink for cause The sands of Papamoa Beach are turning pink again for the sixth year – and no matter the weather, the team from Tauranga Breast Cancer Support will be out dressed in their finest pink.

The purpose of the Pink Papamoa Beach walk on Sunday, October 6, is to provide an opportunity for celebration for those who have survived, an inspira-

tion for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families, and an outreach to the community to encourage early action on any changes they notice to their breasts.

“Early detection can make a big difference in treatments and outcomes,” says Tauranga Breast Cancer Support service coordinator for Lea Lehndorf.

Participants are asked to make a donation to the Tauranga Breast Cancer Support Service. “This money stays locally so we can train local survivors to support those newly diagnosed, offer free counselling to them and their family, hold group gatherings

where the word ‘cancer’ won’t cause a lull in conversation, and regular information and practical advice to all those touched by breast cancer in the Bay of Plenty,” says Lea. While no dogs are permitted, the walk is open to all people.

“Drag the kids out of bed and come on down to the beach in front of the Papamoa Surf Lifesaving Club to join in the fun. More FM will get us hyped, some Bay of Plenty Steamers are rumoured to be there, and there will be giveaways and good laughs,” encourages Lea. Bra fence ready for additions Merivale Community Centre is proving there is more than one way for a bra to offer support by creating Tauranga’s first Bra Fence for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Hung on Tuesday – the bras are now dangling from the fence outside the Kesteven Ave building to mark the organisation’s annual fundraising drive - and inspire others to hang their bras.

MCC’s whanau support officer Helen Paul-Smith says the idea for the bra fence came to her during a recent road trip.

“I was between Wanganui and Raetihi, and out in the middle of nowhere there’s a big shoe fence, and it goes on, and on, and on. So I just put two

and two together.”

They collected three bags of decorated bras ready for Tuesday morning and now Helen is encouraging others to add to the fence during October.

“Because the subject is so close to people, there’s been a huge positive response and tonnes of support for it.

“We’ve had a lot of bras donated from second hand shops.”

She says it’s cool how such things have a knock-on effect.

“Hopefully we’ll have a collection by the end of it.”

Nicky Chamberlain has every reason to enjoy living every day to the full.

With the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this week, the mother-of-two is reflecting on her personal battle against the disease – and counting her blessings.

Nicky’s journey began at age 31, diagnosed with BRCA1 – the gene mutation which drastically increases the chance of developing cancer. After learning of the diagnosis and weighing her options, at age 32 Nicky opted to have her ovaries removed.

“That was the dominant cancer in our family. I then had yearly screenings of mammograms and ultrasounds.”

Three years later, during a routine mammogram, nurses found a small lump in Nicky’s left breast. She was called backed for a biopsy and days later, was told she had breast cancer.

“It’s a weird place to be in.

“You don’t feel unwell, you don’t look unwell, and you’ve just been told you’ve got cancer.”

Alongside her husband, telling her parents and two children, then aged seven and four, was the hardest part, says Nicky.

“They didn’t understand at all. The seven-year-old was more worried about if mummy was going to die, who would look after him.”

The following month Nicky underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery with implants.

“It was really terrifying. Going from having big boobs to having nothing at all was really daunting. Having the reconstructive surgery straight away was easier psychologically. But it was quite an experience.”

Six years later, Nicky still has regular tests, but has maintained a clean bill of health.

Her implants mean Nicky could easily feel if another lump developed, but now her focus is on her family, and living each day to the full.

“I’m still here, and there are people that don’t make it.”

Nicky, now 42, is still involved with Tauranga’s Breast Cancer Support Service and credits it immensely for helping her through.

She attends regular support groups for young women and has joined a group for people with the BRCA gene.

Rowing against the odds Disaster was no obstacle for a group of Bay of Plenty master rowers trying to compete for a haul of medals at a recent national championship.

The regatta at Twizel looked set to get off to a bad start when the group’s boats were damaged after a trailer carrying them overturned at Plimmerton.

But Tauranga rower Trish Kamizona, among the 10-strong contingent, overcame the challenge.

“The boats and gear didn’t make it to Twizel, but we were determined to give it our best shot,” says Trish, who collected two bronzes and

“We continued down to compete and had overwhelming support from other clubs, which let us borrow their boats. The support from other master rowers was overwhelming, but it is no surprise – it’s just the way we [rowers] do it.”

The group, made up of rowers aged 40-plus from the Bay of Plenty Coast, Tauranga and Rotorua rowing clubs, went on to collect three golds, two silvers and four bronzes, in races ranging from singles through to eights.

“That is a pretty good result for us, we were really happy and we ended up making a lot of friends from all the other clubs.”

Five young people suffering from the effects of cancer have been enjoying horse riding and caring for a horse at Tauranga RDA Equestrian Therapy Centre.

In an eight-week life skills course, they’ve attended two hour sessions to learn the basics of catching, grooming, saddling, caring for and riding a horse. CEO Kat Macmillan says it’s been an “absolute delight” to have the Canteen members. “They have been so committed to learning and achieving, which is very humbling to see after all the hardship they have all suf-

fered. It’s really great to see these wonderful people having so much fun and bonding with the horses. “Kat says it “just so amazing” to see how much people get out of centre’s courses. “Teenagers that have little or no self-confidence or sense of self worth open up here and start to communicate and enjoy themselves within the first couple of sessions.

Being around horse helps young people develop trust, overcome fear and feel a sense of companionship, says Kat. “This impacts on their life in general. The great thing about our courses too is clients can come back as volunteers and continue to enjoy that bond with the horses and people here.” Tauranga RDA is always looking for volunteers.

Rail enthusiasts watch out – a travelling exhibition carrying tonnes of train fun and facts is rolling into Mount Maunganui this weekend.

KiwiRail is celebrating 150 years of rail in New Zealand with a free exhibition by train, stopping at Triton Ave on Saturday, October 5.

The family friendly ‘Keeping NZ on the Move: The Exhibition Express’

showcases the evolution of the rail industry in New Zealand and is packed with displays about rail – including four individually themed educational containers.

KiwiRail chief executive Jim Quinn says they are looking forward to stopping at the Mount and celebrating 150 years with residents.

Housing issues addressed in children’s build A tactical yet fun method of teaching Tauranga’s children about New Zealand’s substandard housing issues is being undertaken these school holidays.

Habitat for Humanity’s 2013 Build Challenge will see children build houses from Lego at home and enter an online contest.

Last year’s competition saw 1060 children participate across the country.

The Build Challenge aims to raise awareness of national and international housing problems through a fun, creative campaign.

Children and their families learn about real-life housing needs and the importance of a safe, warm and healthy home where families can thrive.

All Lego houses built during the campaign will feature on the Build Challenge website. Children can encourage friends and family to vote for their house, for them to win Lego prizes.

Kennel cough: the facts kennels&cattery

Kennel cough, or canine cough, is an infectious bronchitis seen in dogs.

Infected dogs develop a harsh cough, and can also sneeze and vomit, and have a fever.

Severe infections can progress to pneumonia. The disease is highly contagious between dogs, just like the flu is between humans; and this is why it is so important to vaccinate dogs that are staying in boarding kennels.

If one infected dog comes into the kennels, the disease can spread rapidly between all unvaccinated dogs. And your dog can also become infected by playing in the

park with a dog that has recently been exposed to the disease.

Because the disease is a combination of numerous organisms, both bacterial and viral, the vaccine is not a 100 per cent guarantee of prevention. But it will either prevent disease in exposed dogs, or result in much less severe symptoms developing.

Vaccines do not cure disease. The vaccine contains a virus or bacterium that has been specially altered so it doesn’t cause disease. It stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies that protect against this particular disease in the future. As the disease

changes, so do vaccines; and we are now using a different vaccination for canine cough that seems to be providing improved immunity.

The first time your dog is given this vaccination, they will require a booster in four weeks’ time, so we recommend having your vaccinations upto-date well before you plan to leave your dog in kennels this summer.

Let’s hear it for the real dogs Much hoopla this week about the funding of the bronze dog on the waterfront. Good old Hairy Maclary, with that stony look in his eyes, is drawing a lot of fundraising action.

It’s a bit ironic when there are so many real dogs about town that don’t get anything spent on them.

Not so long ago, the council sent out its annual registration bills, to collect money from good dog owners to fund the pursuit of bad ones. It’s a shame when there’s a tax on good

behaviour, to be spent on bad – there’s not much provided for the payers in this situation. Some wiser councils provide some services to their long-suffering registration paying residents.

Doggie bag dispensers in parks, for one. Sure, it’s not a big deal to grab a bag on the way out the door, along with other essential doggie

equipment (the lead, the ball, a frisbee or the stuffed politician), but sometimes even the best prepared dog walkers get caught short.

And why shouldn’t they get something back for their years of shelling out for registrations?

Warning against outbreak A suspected outbreak of kennel cough has one Tauranga veterinary clinic asking dog owners to be diligent with vaccinations ahead of the summer holiday season.

Vetcare Tauranga practice manager Anita Fellows says an alarming number of dogs are being brought into the clinic with the condition – a pattern only expected to rise as summer nears.

“We’ve had a large number of kennel cough cases come in, which is unusual. It would indicate to us there is an outbreak going on.”

Kennel cough presents similar symptoms to human illness whooping cough – where the affected dog can’t stop coughing, sometimes to the point where it vomits.

“It’s not life threatening, but it’s very contagious,” says Anita.

“Often it originates from somewhere where there are a lot of dogs, but then when that infected dog goes out into the public before the signs show up, they’re already contagious, they go to the park, sniff and it carries on. It’s very easily spread.”

Anita says while the condition is catchable year-round, as families go away during summer and more

dogs are put into kennels, cases rise significantly.

The vaccination dogs receive each three years, known as the Parvo vaccine, offers some protection against kennel cough. But if owners know their dog is being put into the kennels, further action should be taken.

“If they’re at risk, they should have a specific kennel cough vaccine and that protects them further from it. That needs to be done every year.

“People often rush in the day before they go away, but that’s not enough time for the immunity to take effect. Owners need to plan; they need to get in at least 10 days before they go away.”

Tauranga drifting fans are in for a treat with Baypark confirmed to host the third round of the D1NZ national series in January.

The meet follows on from Baypark’s successful inaugural drift event last January, which organiser Brendon

White says was the most popular event ever held in the D1NZ National Drifting Championships series.

“We knew it was going to be big because the pre-sales in the lead-up were better than any event we’ve had in our seven years.

“The crowd got so big on the second day we had to stop people coming in for safety [reasons].”

Chrysler and owner reunite after 25 years Tauranga man Reg McCarthy never thought he would see his 1935 Chrysler again when he sold it in the late 1980s, but the 84-yearold was reunited with the classic car in Mount Maunganui on Fathers’ Day this year.

Reg had lived in Thames his whole life but moved to the Bethlehem Retirement Village with his wife Marian three months ago to be closer to their daughter Alison Verran and her family.

Alison says her father purchased a 1935 Chrysler in a very rundown condition back in the mid-1970s and spent many hours restoring the classic car.

“Over the next 12 years, we enjoyed many family outings around the Coromandel Peninsula and dad also drove the car for many weddings around Thames.”

Reg was the second owner of the vehicle after buying it from a man named Mr Clark, who had owned it for 40 years.

Alison says Reg worked for SW Donkin for 43 years and was often the person to service the Chrysler and give it a warrant of fitness.

Back then warrants only cost five shilling – 50 cents.

“Reg was so overwhelmed with finding his dear car again after 25 years, and Graham kindly offered to meet up and take Reg for a ride.

“So, on Saturday, September 14, Mum and Dad, along with my brother, David and his partner from Hamilton, myself and our children Cody and Libby, all had a reminiscent ride.

“Dad said it was ‘Just marvellous to be able to ride in the old girl again’.”

To our absolute surprise, the Chrysler was right there, at the Mount.”

Alison says Reg became very emotional when seeing his “baby” again and meeting its new owner.

Graham has completed further restoration work to bring it back to its beautiful condition, says Alison.

Champion rallying in Japan Bay of Plenty rally driver Michael Young is rejoicing in winning his second consecutive two-wheel driver Asia Pacific Rally Championship title on Sunday by securing the title at Rally Hokkaido, which he dominated with a round still to go.

The 20 year-old Opotiki driver led the two-wheel-drive class and junior cup from the first stage but drove steadily to ensure he finished this year’s rally after failing to complete it in the last two years.

“It can’t get much better than this

really. Even though it tried to stop me right at the end, nothing was going to stop me from finishing this time so I’m pretty happy.”

Even a rock, which punctured a tyre on the second-last round, could not stop Michael and co-driver Malcolm Read finishing the rally and claiming the title – with the pair changing the tyre in only four minutes, just prior to the last stage of the event.

Michael’s two-wheel-drive championship success comes after a top year racing his Cusco TRD Toyota Vitz, which saw the team take its first APRC overall round win in Malaysia about a month ago. The Junior Cup, a class introduced to encourage young drivers to compete in the APRC, was also tied up by Michael at the weekend – his

main rival Hiroshi Asakura having too much of a gap to bridge at the last round remaining in China.

“I had a great team behind me this weekend and their support meant I could finally achieve my goals this year, which were to win the two-wheel-drive championship and the junior cup.”

Michael – who also sits third in the APRC drivers’ championship standings with only one round to go – is not planning to compete in the last round in China.

Instead the team’s next round will be Rally Thailand on December 7-8.

Putting study on ice From Papamoa to Antarctica, biologist Tracey Burgess-Jones is passionate about not letting life get in the way of her goals.

Later this month Tracey will graduate with her PhD from the University of Waikato, after researching lichens growing at temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius in Antarctica.

Balance challenge

The mother of two girls, aged five and 25, says it has been challenging trying to achieve harmony between

study and other aspects of her life, but it’s well worthwhile.

“Finding the balance between being the kind of parent I needed to be while still maintaining a high work output has taken a lot of effort.

Juggling family commitments with research in Antarctica will pay off for Tracey Burgess-Jones who graduates with a University of Waikato PhD this month.

Life changing

“While studying, I’ve got married, had another daughter, done renovations, had some health setbacks and bought a lifestyle block.

“Just because you’re studying, doesn’t mean the rest of your life stops. You just have to make it all work together.”

Tracey – who grew up in Papamoa – has turned her focus to Antarctica for her PhD.

An Antarctica Scholarship allowed her to head south on four research trips to learn more about lichens in cool temperatures, allowing her to fall in love with the continent.

“The air is different. The landscape is so huge. It’s hard to put words on what it is that is so addictive about Antarctica.

“It’s a sensory deprivation and sensory overload at the same time.”

Moving on

After completing her PhD thesis ‘Population Genetics and Photobiont Selectivity in Antarctic Lichens’ she will take part in her third University of Waikato graduation ceremony on October 14 – something she wouldn’t miss for the world, after juggling part-time research the last four years.

“I think education at any stage or any age is really beneficial, but my advice is to be very careful about not overloading yourself.

“Part-time is a very good option when you have other commitments.”

Jobseekers will be able to get a helping hand in their quest for work with Welcome Bay Community Centre’s launch of a pre-employment course this month.

Centre manger Anna Larsen is excited about offering the free short course that aims to help both first-time jobseekers and those returning to the workforce, in what she hopes will be the start of offering a series of “positive” courses to help residents in the

area. Anna says it has become common for people to ask for help with their CVs at the centre.

“We have been conscious of the need for some sort of help with this sort of thing, so we are kicking it off with this pre-employment course.”

The pre-employment course – being run by human resources consultant Sue Hunt – will cover writing applications, and tips on preparing for and conducting yourself in an interview. The first course is on October 15.

The course will be run regularly if there is sufficient demand.

The centre also aims to follow this up with CV writing workshops and introductory courses in computing. Beekeeping and permaculture courses are among other subjects Anna is keen to run courses on. Expanding programmes will be a major focus after the centre takes on a youth worker, she says.

What happens to our teacher education graduates?

If you pop into the classroom or early childhood centre of any Bay of Plenty school you are likely to find a University of Waikato teacher education graduate.

Anna Gunson GradDipT - Secondary Teacher: Otumoetai College As a GradDipT student, Anna spent several weeks at Otumoetai College on a practicum experience. A year later Anna is now employed as a full-time English teacher.

It is a job that Anna is passionate about. She loves the ‘aha’ moments, when a student understands a concept that she has been teaching.

Her approach to teaching is based on the philosophy that students should be challenged to think. To encourage critical thinking her lessons are thematically-based, but incorporate English skills. For instance this year her students are considering the concept of identity.

Anna rates Waikato University highly, in particular her Tauranga lecturers who encouraged her to fully particpate in the life of the school while she was on practicum and think creatively as a teacher.

Liz Coote BTchg - Early Childhood Teacher: Maungatapu Preschool The early childhood teacher used to work in the hospitality industry, but her heart was for teaching. She decided to pursue an early childhood degree at Waikato University, because she believes young children need the best possible start in life. She says her degree gave her the knowledge to ensure she plans relevant and meaningful activities for the children. She chose the University of Waikato to complete her qualification, because of its reputation as a leading provider of intial teacher education programmes.

Ben Wood GradDipT - Secondary Teacher: Papamoa College He has studied zoology and ecology, hunted wildlife in the Australia outback, has travelled extensively and has spent a year surfing in Hawaii. However, it was a stint as a tour guide that sparked Ben’s love for teaching.

Ben believes a good teacher needs to be open-minded with plenty of life experiences. Ben, who is a first-year teacher has no regrets about completing a GradDipT and his career choice. “Teaching makes you feel like you can make some sort of a difference. There’s satisfaction in making people’s lives better.”

Ben adds that Waikato has a good reputation for education and says he finished his course as prepared as he could be. He enjoyed the small class sizes and one-on-one learning at the Tauranga campus.

Scott Higgins GradDipT - Primary (Hamilton) Teacher: Otumoetai Intermediate After completing his Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies at Waikato, Scott completed a oneyear Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Primary) at the Hamilton campus.

He chose to study at Waikato to be near family and also because of the professionalism and knowledge of Waikato staff. Initially he had planned to be a high school physical education teacher, but during his degree an experience as a learning assistant with intermediate aged students, inspired him to work with younger students.

“Studying my GradDipT at Waikato gave me a chance to work with the best in the industry. I think that Waikato’s reputation in Teacher Education is well known and I attribute some of my success to the fact that I studied there.”

Growing your own veggies for fresh results Remember how good fresh veggies taste? One solid way to secure super fresh vegetables is by growing your own.

Here are some simple tips to help you set up a thriving vegetable garden in your own backyard.

A solid foundation

Make sure you have good drainage, and ensure healthy soil by preparing the garden bed with compost, sheep pellets, and blood and bone. There’s no end of delicious and easy-to-grow vegetable options. You plant different vegetables for different seasons – so make sure you do a little research first.

Start by taking a look through the following list of seasonal vegetables; then you can always visit Mitre 10 Mega and ask staff further questions.

Browse through the information on the different seed packs, and talk about what works best for this region. Remember to ask about the sort of conditions different vegetables like – sun, shade, sheltered – to help decide where to put your garden.

Think about whether you want to grow from seeds or seedlings.

Both will give you great vegetables, but you’ll need to allow more time before seeds are ready for eating.

As we’re in spring, here’s a list of vegetables perfect for this time of year:

Peas, beetroot, carrot, tomatoes, courgettes, radish, lettuce, early potatoes, spinach, silverbeet, broccoli, cucumber, beans, eggplant (late spring) and capsicum (late spring). When summer arrives you’ll be able to plant cucumbers, eggplant, capsicum, chillies, courgettes, corn and potatoes.

For best results, plant seeds/seedlings directly into vegetable mix.

Do this by digging a hole about twice the width of the root ball.

Gently place the plant in, top up with more mix, press lightly and water. Always water sufficiently, but gently to not damage young plants.

As expected, the severe drought earlier this year slowed economic growth, with statistics out this week showing gross domestic product grew 0.2 per cent in the three months to June 30, taking annual growth to 2.5 per cent. ACC has started public consultation on levy rates for the upcoming 2014/2015 year.

ment signalled levy reductions of $300 million in 2014/2015, and we anticipate continued savings for New Zealand households and businesses. National is committed to building better public services and ACC is part of that picture.

Our 2.5 per cent growth in the last 12 months compares with 2.6 per cent in Australia, 1.6 per cent in the United States, 1.4 per cent in Canada, 1.3 per cent in Japan, 1.5 per cent in the UK, and -0.5 per cent in the Europe region.

During September’s CAT Tauranga election meeting the presentation by respected expert, local government and policy analyst Larry Mitchell, expressed serious concern about TCC’s current debt level approaching $500million.

Larry says it’s unsustainable and cannot continue unchecked, amounting to $9800 debt for every ratepayer.

The only realistic options to tackle TCC crippling debt are: • Sale of assets – proceeds will be minor and will not assist (NZTA can’t take Route K debt and the proposed deal on the table is horrifying).

Bandana bandit giving back Five years since being given 15 minutes to live – cancer survivor Maisha Brown still feels the impact of the disease on his life every day.

Now 24, Maisha says his life has been turned upside down by the disease which he first put down to over-drinking, after suffering a series of blackouts.

But when he started having seizures

a visit to the doctor revealed he had a grapefruit-sized tumour in his brain.

Maisha says one of the worst parts of his experience has been how he has lost most of his friends, who are no longer interested in spending time with him – he instead spends a lot of time with other cancer sufferers and supporters, through youth cancer support group CanTeen, who he describes as his family.

port. It really makes a difference to be able to talk to others who know what it’s like,” says Maisha, who recently helped fundraise for CanTeen in Tauranga for the annual bandana challenge last month.

This included selling bandanas at head shave fundraising events last weekend.

Maisha says helping with the challenge was just another way of giving back - after receiving so much support from the organisation.

“They gave me support right from the beginning – they gave me top-up cards for my phone and lots of other help.”

Maisha, who is a Bay of Plenty CanTeen committee member, says the top-up cards were a great help for keeping in touch with his family when he was initially in Waikato Hospital for a year.

“They take us on outings, there are so many great things we’ve been doing – it makes a huge difference for us.

If I didn’t have CanTeen I’d be sitting at home – it really helps us get over our cancer.”

CanTeen youth worker Charlie Whiteley says Maisha is a great young man and hopes someone will give him a chance at a normal life by helping him get his first job.

When is lymphatic massage not what it seems It has become apparent to me that people’s experiences of lymphatic massage differ and clarification is needed to explain not only how the massage should feel but also why it is should be performed correctly.

A number of new clients have advised me their experience of lymphatic massage in the past has been painful, and in some cases the therapy has left bruises.

This is not lymphatic massage.

Lymphatic massage, done correctly, is applied lightly, without pain and by no means is bruising an outcome.

The lymphatic system sits just under the skin.

Its fragile capillaries, though four to six times larger than blood capillaries, are attached by collagen fibres to surrounding tissues; and are required to pump up to 90 per cent of all tissue fluid back to the heart.

Though the lymph capillaries can withstand some pressure, in cases where there has been damage to the tissue, increased tissue congestion, or when lymph nodes have been removed, the lymph capillaries no longer have the same ability to manage massage pressure.

The result is reduced ability to remove the fluid in the surrounding tissue.

Lymph fluid also travels very specific pathways back to the heart; and therefore, to ensure fluid is not deposited into other areas of the body, the correct application of lymphatic drainage is imperative.

Lymphatic massage is a specialised modality and requires a number of courses and hours of training to achieve this qualification.

The motto “No pain no gain” is not the motto of lymphatic therapy.

Your Local Body Elections Young voters - their thoughts A large collection of Tauranga’s young voters attended ‘Vote or Die’ this week – an event aimed at increasing election awareness, understanding and involvement among young people.

Hosted by TV3’s Guy Williams, Wednesday’s event on the Tauranga waterfront combined the drama of a game show – complete with a spinning wheel – to pick questions for candidates to answer.

The Weekend Sun asked a few attendees if they’re voting, what issues are important and if any candidates stand out for them.

Many missed opportunities There have been a number of missed opportunities with the local body elections; questions that may have been asked and chances to influence lost voters.

I have been disappointed at the lack of focus the Bay of Plenty Regional Council elections has received.

Regional council has huge responsibilities that impact on us all.

I believe we risk repeating the same old situation through not having had the opportunity to fully consider regional issues; and to take the opportunity to influence change, add new blood, new vitality, and to explore alternative delivery options on offer.

Some of our environmental groups may have missed a chance to meet the candidates and be informed voters. I have already spoken against national party politics at a community level.

Party politics and local community politics should not mix, as I don’t believe we can have strong local economies and vigorous communities when so much public decision-making is made by central government and national parties based in Wellington.

New Zealand is now acknowledged as one of the most fiscally centralised countries in the OECD. In the United Kingdom, the election of the Cameron government has seen a complete turnaround in policy towards local government.

They are seeking to strengthen the decision-making powers of councils and communities through devolving power back to the communities at local government level.

In New Zealand the opposite is happening, with ministers giving themselves greater powers to override decisions made by local and regional councillors and further centralising our public sector.

Without doubt the economy, national and local, benefits the most where decisions are shared and owned by all; where communities and business are seeing outcomes from their efforts with their interests being heard and managed locally.

This is when democracy and liberty is best served.

It is the role of the district health board to strive to provide the best quality service within the funding constraints allowed. The recent history of your Bay of Plenty District Health Board is good, and is recognised as one of the top three DHB’s in the country. I would like to see this progress further enhanced.

A vitally important factor is the role of nurses, which has become more technical. But their role, envisaged by Florence Nightingale, should not be forgotten.

If elected, I believe I could bring the benefits of extensive international business experience as well as high level corporate financial management, both in the private sector as well as in the public sector.

Asparagus: perfect spring produce Spring’s seasonal produce provides a great opportunity to add fresh flavours to healthy, tasty meals, says nutritionist Bronwen Anderson.

Asparagus is delicious cooked or raw and is low in calories.

Quick recipe ideas: For an easy asparagus salad, shave raw asparagus lengthwise with a peeler, toss with olive oil, lemon juice and a mix of fresh herbs, such as mint, basil, coriander and dill. Top with shaved Gruyere and season. Or simply steam asparagus and drizzle over a vinaigrette of red wine vinegar, extra-virgin olive oil, finely chopped shallots and parsley.

Apple and banana magic Fresh fruit should be part of everyone’s diet. I partake of fresh juices a lot more these days and it’s a great way to bulk up your fruit intake.

Sometimes you have to get a little clever when catering for children to up their intake.

Apples are still cheap and plentiful at the moment, and one of my personal favourites is an apple crumble.

During the years I have quickly whipped up a crumble as a last minute dessert.

The urge to make use of a bowl full of apples on the bench the other day came to an abrupt halt when I found I didn’t have enough butter to melt for my crumble topping.

Could I use some oil, I pondered.

Then, I remembered a recipe for banana butter that I could try.

The inspiration continues…last time I wrote about using apples I combined them with walnuts.

This time my home pantry contains some Whittaker’s White

Chocolate and Macadamia bar, so I’ll use that as well. Who can resist chocolate? Come to think of it, why is it still in the pantry?

Like an illusionist, called dynamo, but not as alien blooded...I whipped up a cracker of a crumble for those hungry children as the rain kept them all inside.

The prototype went down extremely well, so here is this week’s apple, banana, and macadamia and white chocolate crumble recipe.

DESSERT

Apple, Banana, and White Chocolate Crumble Serves four Ingredients 8 medium apples, any type 100g dark coconut sugar 1tsp cinnamon 1 tsp mixed spice 3 bananas ½ cup milk ½ cup water 100g Whittaker's White Macadamia Chocolate, finely chopped ½ cup rolled oats ½ cup plain flour Pinch sea salt Method First make the banana butter by mashing bananas with milk, half the coconut sugar and salt. Slowly bring it to a simmer for 4-5minutes on a low heat. Stir constantly to prevent burning, then allow to cool in a separate container. Place in the fridge to set for half hour.

Peel four of the apples and cut into slices, grate the other four apples leaving their skins on and keep separate.

In a stainless pot, dissolve the remaining coconut sugar with the water, then stew the sliced apples until nearly cooked for 4-7 minutes, depending on apple.

Add grated apple which should cook though

for a minute, before adding the spices.

When almost all the liquid has been absorbed, remove the apple mix and place into a suitable baking dish.

Make the crumble mix by adding rolled oats, chocolate, and flour together in a bowl, then add two tablespoons of banana butter.

You can freeze the rest (it’s like banana ice cream) or use like a spread on pancakes or crumpets.

Mix crumble loosely then place on top of apple mix and bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 15-20minutes.

A nice crust would have formed, serve with ice cream.

Level sailing field needed Why would New Zealand mount another challenge to the America’s Cup? The history of the event is loaded with American cheating, rule-changing, litigious events and wealthy, powerplaying men willing to go to any lengths to hold the mug.

If the rest of the world want an opportunity to participate in a large global yachting event we need to have a no country club or yachting club ‘challenge’ for Ye Auld Mug. It is no longer an event that countries can afford to be involved in.

If America has no challenger the cup becomes nothing more than a

tainted historical event.

All countries wishing to participate in a new event could create a trophy energised by fair rules and a global yachting committee, with a priority to create a level playing field for all participants.

The Louis Vuitton elimination series could give a strong message to America by becoming a part of a new event.

The boat should be required to be built in the country that mounts a challenge.

The crew must hold citizenship of that country; and the most

important rule should be that the boat is measured at the beginning of the racing event with no further modifications made during the races. If something should break then a replacement be made but only to the standard of the element that broke.

The existing ability to modify, copy, and buy off personnel should be dispatched to the dismal, disgraceful annals of history.

It is arrant nonsense that Oracle was built in New Zealand, crewed with a majority of New Zealanders using New Zealand technology; and only became the winning boat with the addition of an English tactician and Boeing aeronautical technology, financed by a testosterone-fuelled squillionaire.

Graeme Martin’s letter (The Weekend Sun, September 13) urging everyone to pull their weight is a fair and decent request.

However, his suggestion that those without tertiary education will be a burden on society and destined for failure is not only downright stupid, it risks huge damage to the confidence, hopes and future of the many young ones, who for whatever reason don’t or haven’t done very well at school.

Graeme should have a good look around and he will discover how many innovative, motivated, inspirational and successful people failed at secondary school, let alone didn’t get tertiary education.

Many of us who failed dismally at school discovered when entering the workforce we were great workers and quickly became highly valued. As a young, uneducated worker I was often fascinated at the number of university students doing holiday jobs that were lazy and useless.

It is not all about education it is more about motivation, determination and making good decisions.

A friend who was in the slow learners’ class in high school tells me how their class still gets together from time to time and all but one owns their own house. And many, like him, have been very successful.

So for those who aren’t or haven’t done so well at school don’t take too much notice of Graeme’s negativity. But you may just need to work that little bit harder than the so-called educated ones to achieve your goals.

We all know education is necessary for many careers, however to spend too much time in education is slothfulness, as education must have an end in view for it is not an end itself.

If Graeme thinks all those working hard at many jobs that don’t require higher education are going nowhere obviously he’s still got a lot to learn himself.

Perhaps Mike Rodgers, the current CEO of BOP Rugby, and the board who employed him need to take a long hard look at the direction they have taken our team.

In any other company the failure to deliver would be met with a totally new board and CEO being appointed.

It is clearly obvious the direction the Steamers board is heading in is not working.

We need to inspire our club players to reach for Steamer status and that will never happen when we have five Aussies in the team and many others who have never played club rugby here in Tauranga.

Give us a reason to show up and support the Steamers by giving us local players to support. Then, and only then, will you see the puff, the players and the support come back to our Steamers.

What did TCC spend on lawyer?

Returning from overseas and quickly reviewing The Weekend Sun issues I missed, on p10 of the Friday, August 16 issue the headline of Faulkner’s Corner reads: “The real cost of council’s legal bills” and I quote: “and the top bill in 2011 went to Simpson Grierson at $5,270,407”.

How much, I ask, was charged for the two appearances last year of an Auckland Simpson Grierson lawyer at the pre-hearings and the two-day appearance of three other SG Auckland lawyers at Robyn Rimmer, my and two other’s case against the Tauranga City Council regarding their non-consul-

tation and non-notification of the recently discovered 15 metre building prohibition on our harbourside properties placed many years prior.

The Environment Court judge at the outset said he did not know why we were bringing this case, as TCC had no obligation to consult with or inform us directly on such an issue, as we were not Tongueeeahtarfenuah; and it was up to the 1200 property owners affected to somehow (he didn’t specify how) find out themselves about this property imposition.

The judge implied our case was frivolous and inferred we could be up for costs.

Needless to say the three-man lawyer team

Let’s curb TCC debt Currently, Tauranga City Council’s debt is something close to half a billion dollars.

They skillfully managed this by growing a debt of $70 million in 2004, which on its own is a frightening amount for a non-productive, non-earning organisation to owe.

Ratepayers of Tauranga need to be clearly aware this increasing debt will get so overpowering that when interest rates rise people with mortgages may forfeit homes, because they simply won’t be able to pay massive rates, to pay for TCC debt.

With the increasing rate of debt the council finds itself in, it won’t be too long before it owes $1billion. Now think about this because there is certain inevitability here.

We simply have to have a change in Tauranga and it has to be now, as it is close to being too late for all.

A management team in the real world that racked up such a massive debt in such a short time would be sacked long before debt got half a billion dollars.

Think about that folks.

So councilor Bill, Mayor, Deputy David, Mr CEO, staff and planners, and all other councillors currently running for re-election, how much did Auckland’s Simpson Grierson charge us Tauranga ratepayers for the two pre-hearings and two-day Environment Court session last year?

Remember, in 2011, according to Cr Bill, this one Auckland law firm alone charged us Tauranga ratepayers a whopping great five and a quarter million bucks.

Voter apathy warranted Max Mason of the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce and others have commented on the apathy of voters toward the upcoming elections.

The fact is we dont have a properly functioning democracy where the people are engaged and relevant.

Candidates meetings I have attended, including one organised by the Chamber of Commerce, have not allowed questions on democracy to be put to the candidates. No questions from the floor.

So this is how it all works...Unknown (or known) candidate with nice toothy grin and unverifiable bland ‘feel good’ platitudes gets elected.

That is the last input the voter has for three years. Done and dusted.

Candidate then goes behind closed doors and stiches up deals with unelected co-governance cohorts that have no responsibility to the voters at all.

Some candidates don’t even go that far; they don’t attend very many meetings.

They have other interests to pursue. Our money is handy though.

The voters do not have any control over the politicians.

This is why there is apathy.

This is not democracy; this is tyranny by the minority. It does not have to be like this. Those who have an interest in our country`s future could read the book by Amy Brooke called ‘100 days Claiming back New Zealand’or go to website:www.100days.co.nz G Faulkner, Tauranga.

We need Bob’s wisdom I was highly amused to read the reaction to Bob Clarkson’s advertisement in last Friday’s newspaper.

As a candidate I would love to be endorsed by an achiever and mover and shaker like Bob. This country needs more people like him to get our economy humming, never mind the Kiwi-knocking machine for goodness sake. The only thing that will help negate our high rate scenario is economic progress, and Bob is a giant in this field.

We should all listen to his wisdom, and be grateful there are people about like him. Nothing wrong with a bit of controversy.

Hairy promise broken Last week, Tauranga City Counci split-voted six in favour (elected members Stuart Crosby, Larry Baldock, Terry Molloy, Tony Christiansen, Wayne Moultrie and Bill Grainger), to five opposed, to waive the $150,000 maintenance bond for the Hairy Maclary statue project and look at other conditions with serious financial implications.

Apparently driven by City Task Force councillors, without any formal submission or request or appearance made by Creative Tauranga before the extraordinary council meeting.

None of the options in the council report were palatable to ratepayers. The situation best summarized as follows: 1. Creative Tauranga was fully aware of requirements of the undertakings given.

2. No statues should ever have been manufactured until all funding for the project was in place and confirmed.

3. All councillors have repeatedly promised and undertaken to TCC ratepayers there would be no council ratepayer funding for this expensive project or any on-going maintenance.

4. Councillors, who have gone against that pledge, are breaking promises and undertakings given to the electorate as a whole.

The public has seen no ‘project cost’ summary (or business case), showing funding raised costs to date; and lastly the probable deficit which is said to be $400,000.

In my view is an appalling state of affairs handled in an appalling manner.

The council shows it lacks integrity and its actions are anti-democratic.

Electors ,who have not yet voted, have the opportunity to dismiss those councillors who can’t or won’t keep promises or undertakings at the ballot box.

Hospital parking is healthy

Diane Jeffery (The Weekend, September 27) doesn’t know how well off we are for parking at the Tauranga Hospital.

Diane, the security guards are friendly and helpful. Try dropping your parents at the front door; park your car – even on the lower level, and use the excellent lift up to the hospital level – then do the reverse when they’re finished. Much better than in Christchurch where you not only pay to park, but have to walk through underground tunnels to the parking building.

And you’ve taken them twice since June...you poor thing.

The husband of an elderly couple I know has had weekly outpatient visits for some five years now...no complaints.

And parking is much better now than five years ago.

Additionally, the current Bay of Plenty District Health Board CEO has said while he is there, he will endeavour

to ensure parking remains free.

Most people I know hope it remains so.

Your parents paid $50 for what sounds like a disability-parking card.

They obviously qualified; so use it and don’t complain. There are many elderly who can’t afford even that amount, even though they would qualify.

Alternatively, try checking out the various health shuttles that operate around the Bay of Plenty.

Many service clubs from outlying townships also run health shuttles.

If your parents are lucky enough to be Maori, phone the taxpayer-funded Kaitiaki Nursing Services trust. They may be able to help.

If current and previous governments, hadn’t continued pouring taxpayer funds into a racist Treaty ‘gravy train’, there’d be ample funds for DHBs to build high-rise parking buildings without charges to users. G Allan, Matua.

Finances need to get on track

Some letters in September 27’s The Weekend Sun about financial matters stand out.

Firstly, the letter by R Paterson and the huge debt of the Tauranga City Council. Analyst Larry Mitchell gave us the frightening figures at the Citizens Advocacy Meeting, the debt ratio stands at $10,000 per ratepayer.

I hope that someone from TCC will take up the challenge of the writer to have the figures professionally analysed.

Another thought-provoking letter was from Bryan Johnson about preferential health treatment for Maori. I also read the same report and thought ‘What health inequality?’.

I agree with him, it is personal responsibility to follow sensible guidelines, to not smoke or overdo on alcohol.

It costs just $17 to visit a doctor at a Maori health provider, so poor personal finances are not a factor - probably cheaper than a packet of ciggies.

Perhaps it is simply a case of juggling priorities to follow through with healthcare.

Just to clarify, I believe the $17 is not exclusively for Maori.

The third worriesome letter was about a promised golden handshake of $400,000 for Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s CEO. Are there any backroom deals our Tauranga council has stashed away we are not privy to? Are the books open?

These letters demonstrate a drain on our city finances and are a starting point to get back on track.

Whoever did the mail-out, that has everyone upset, must be kicking themselves for the free front page promotion they got on the very people they targeted.

Just how unhappy they must be with those elected members to go to the cost and trouble of printing and delivering

Or perhaps it is better worded, who will the newspaper elect this election.

On the lighter side, at least we know one councillors first choice in how to deal with it is physical violence, nice leadership role models.

A little of everything in the music scene It's a grab-bag of stuff this week - gigs, bits 'n' bobs, a little of everything.

Some weeks the universe presents its information in tidy, easy to connect packets. This is not one of those weeks. Instead it's one of those weeks where several things have popped up on my radar, none of which seem noticeably related. But they all seem interesting for one reason or another so let's get at it and I'll try not to spend too much time on segues.

First up, I notice they've started announcing bands for the Laneways Festival.

Topping the bill are English master of melodic electronica James Blake and New Zealand's current queen of pop Lorde. That's a pretty cool start. James Blake is quite extraordinary and, if you're old and hate electronica and need convincing, get on-line and Google his cover of Joni Mitchell's “A Case of You”. It's wonderful. Lorde, of course, needs no introduction.

Also on the bill: Kurt Vile, Danny Brown, Chvrches, Frightened Rabbit, Haim, Daughter, Mount Kimbie,

Savages, Jamie XX and many many more.

On the local front it's been good to see a little new music arriving along the Strand with the opening of the Brew Bar, a craft beer outlet for Rotorua beer-maker Crouchers. There's a Brew Bar in Rotorua which has long had interesting music and the one here is following suit. Every Saturday and Sunday afternoon there are gigs (for free).

On Sunday afternoons there's a laid-back acoustic session with Dylan Israel, second generation Tauranga singer/songwriter. Dylan is the son of John Michaelz who is currently somewhere in Northland on his “Sing For Your Supper” tour.

I'm not sure who's on this Saturday, but next weekend (12 October) there's Waylon McPherson and the following Saturday (19 October) sees the return of Swamp Thing, which you should definitely mark on your calendar. See these guys soon before the only was you can catch them is from the back of stadium after paying massive ticket prices.

And here are a couple more quickies for gig-lovers: Sunday 13 is the next get-together of the Entertainers Club at the

Hank Marvin.

Bureta Park Motor Inn (get in quick before it becomes a supermarket!). Playing will be 9-piece Hamilton jazz outfit Art Gecko, who've been around for years and should be a whole lot of fun. Also on the bill are duo Harlequin.

Later that week in the Redwood Room at Bureta (Thursday 17) the Acoustic Music Club is presenting Mark Moroney and David Shanhun, two highly regarded singer/songwriters. Opening for them will be Kaimai Express. It kicks off at 7.15, tickets are $15.

And finally...

I seem to have mentioned Robbie Laven and Marion Arts a few times in recent weeks and there's a bit more news out of the Bonjour Swing camp: the band have been invited to play support for Hank Marvin when the legendary Shadows guitarist appears at Baycourt on October 19. Hank Marvin is playing a Gypsy Swing tour where he celebrates the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli.

Going back a couple of years, Robbie and Marion visited the Django Reinhardt Anniversary Festival

in Samois, France, where, amongst other amazing music, they saw Hank sitting in with the Rosenberg Trio and Bireli Lagrene (“with clean and articulate technique and the dazzling Shadows smile” say Robbie).

Robbie explained to me how that style of swing made it across the English Channel: “Django and Grappelli fled to England at the beginning of WW II when Gypsies were persecuted by the Germans, and England has maintained a Gypsy jazz tradition ever since. Legend has it that Django got homesick, returned with a huge English Negro body guard, who got so scared after two days in a Parisian Gypsy caravan park that he promptly went home again!”

The gig will also be a bit of a full circle musically for Robbie as he set off on his music performance path in 1960 (Te Awamutu) in a Shadows band with fantasies about Hank's shining cherry red Stratocaster (as featured on the first Shadows EP).

He says: “I've in fact never seen the Shadows live, but owe them for years of gigging - like most New Zealand guitarists of the early sixties!”

THE GREAT GATSBY

Mr Pip

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Elijah Wood, Carey Mulligan - Dir: Baz Luhrmann Letting an extravagant director like Baz Luhrmann loose on a revered book noted for it subtlety and delicacy was always going to divide audiences. And so it proved. I feel somewhat divided myself: I love the book and while on one hand I think he trashes the feel and misses a couple of major points, the film is a visual delight and does get a lot of it entertainingly right.

Wood is our narrator Nick who finds himself living alongside the rich and spoiled,

specifically the mysterious Jay Gatsby who befriends Nick, partly because Nick’s cousin Daisy is his long-lost love. She is now married (for money) and lives across the bay so Gatsby holds a series of elaborate parties to get her attention.

It’s a short, beautifully crafted book and Luhrmann hoes in with all the excess of Gatsby’s over-the-top parties. Passages of text fly across the screen, costumes and revellers explode in wild colour, and the music

deliriously skips from jazz age to hip-hop. This is not the polite approach of the staid seventies Robert Redford version (which won Francis Ford Coppola a Best Screenplay Oscar but was frankly a bit boring).

Everything about this that makes some people like it is exactly what makes others hate it. If you’ve seen Luhrmann’s previous films - Moulin Rouge and Romeo and Juliet in particular – you’ll know what to expect. Your choice.

With Rialto

(M) Violence – 1hr 40mins.

Kiwi filmmaker Andrew Adamson (Shrek, The Chronicles of Narnia) directs Hugh Laurie in this drama set during the 1990s, among the Papua New Guinea civil war. The film is adapted by Adamson from the acclaimed 2006 novel by New Zealand author Lloyd Jones. Shattered by the war, Papua New Guinea’s teachers have fled along with most everyone else, and only one white man chooses to stay behind: the eccentric Mr Watts (Laurie). The object of much curiosity and scorn, he sweeps out the ruined schoolhouse and begins to read to the children each day from Charles Dickens’ classic ‘Great Expectations’.

The Hangover Part II was a follow-up pay check for everyone involved in the wild energy and originality of The Hangover - same jokes, same story, different country. The Hangover Part III is the one where everyone was sick of the idea but thought there were still a few more milkable millions in it. The plot is sorta new this time (Doug has been kidnapped, they have to find Chow to get him back) but the jokes are completely locked into imitating their (better) counterparts from previous outings and even Bradley Cooper looks bored. Best bits are in the end credits.

John Cusack has been in a lot of films over the last couple of years that have ended up going direct to DVD and being, in all honesty, doesn’t break pretty forgettable. The Numbers Station that run. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a perfectly serviceable, if rather unambitious, thriller. It’s basically a two-hander. Cusack is a rundown CIA agent sent to one of the titular facilities. He just has to guard Malin Akerman as she sends out number codes every day.

It’s a safe job. Except there’s a sudden ambush, the codes may be compromised and all sorts of chaos ensues. Solid enough.

Everyone’s favourite everyman, Matt Damon is his usual likeable self in Promised Land . He plays Steve Butler, a fracking salesman sent to rural McKinley to offer an economic lifeline to struggling framers. In exchange for drilling their land. Said likeability is cunningly used: Steve isn’t such a nice guy; his charming lines are just lines and he’s economical with the truth. But he’s a true believer. The pros and cons are pretty well balanced initially, and with strong support from Frances McDormand, Hal Holbrook and others it’s classy intelligent stuff with a distinct Local Hero vibe. Shame about the ending.

Sinister is a bit different from the glut of recent horror outings in that it’s smart, has no zombies or vampires, and is actually pretty good. Ethan Hawke stars as a somewhat obsessive true crime writer who moves his family into a murder house (without mentioning it) so he can do research for his next book. There he finds some old home movies, “snuff ” films pretty much, but the answers he seeks prove both supernatural and nasty. Music and cinematography are effectively spooky, the cast are great and the tension wonderfully handled. Yep, it’s a scary film that is genuinely scary!

NZ comedian in Tauranga New Zealand comedian Ben Hurley premieres his new one night only show at Baycourt Theatre tonight.

‘The Reckoning’ is at Baycourt Theatre’s exhibition space (October 4) from 8pm-11pm.

Classic organ concert Organ enthusiasts are in for a treat when New Zealand’s leading concert organist Martin Setchell performs a one-off show at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church this month with a mix of music from the great composers and show hits.

The concert will be supported by the Bay of Plenty Men’s Choir, who will sing both individually and as a group, and to accompany the organ.

Choir director Keith Bowen says there is strong interest in the concert, which is already two-thirds sold out. But Keith hopes if they can manage a capacity crowd of 200 they will be able to convince Martin to return.

“He is a highly regarded organist who has played all over the world, so it’s a real privilege to have him here.”

Money raised from the October 30 concert will fund St Andrew’s support programmes. Tickets ($10) are available from the church office on 07 575 9347.

Co-ordinator Sandra Jensen says dancers and non-dancers are welcome.

“Anyone who wants to be a dancing zombie bride can come and learn the dance.

“The thing is zombies aren’t necessarily known for their co-ordination anyway.”

Zombie bridesmaids, flower girls, grooms and creepy celebrants are also welcome.

Sandra is looking for donations of wedding dresses or ball gowns to be splattered with red paint for the performance at Red Square on October 26. Donations can be given to the Incubator.

Brides are also welcome to bring their

own wedding dresses to be “zombified”.

Tauranga companies Informal Tea Company and Spongedrop will be donating afternoon tea at the workshop.

On performance day, dancers are asked to bring a gold coin donation and after performing they’ll be invited to participate in Tauranga band Storm Eaters’ music video at Historic Village.

ZM will be at the Red Square to announce the zombie performance.

The annual Tauranga Arts Festival runs October 24-November 3.

Wearable art on show

Ten Tenors just for mum

Greenpark Primary School students were having a ball strutting their stuff on the catwalk adorned in dresses made from lolly wrappers, newspaper and plastic for the schools Wearable Art Show last week.

On September 26, Year 6 students showcased their costumes made entirely out of recycled materials at Greenpark School hall.

Students entered in five different categories including futuristic uniforms, gypsies tramps and thieves, into the sea, our country our people, and 80 per cent paper and card.

A ‘10 out of 10’ musical ensemble is coming to Tauranga just for mums.

Australian music group The Ten Tenors is coming to the city as part of it’s special ‘Mum’s the Word’ world tour.

The Ten Tenors perform at Baycourt Centennial Theatre on Monday, October 14, from 8pm10.10pm.

Revamped shed now open A new, improved and ‘full to the brim’ Cargo Shed is officially open – ready to show off a world of art, craft, and artisan foods.

The Cargo Shed Collective reached its completion goal on time, achieving a three month-long overhaul and redesign of the shed, including woodwork, painting, shop fitting and design – all done by the stallholders themselves under the guidance of Michael Sass.

Although the Arts Market @ The Cargo Shed is deemed complete, manager Kathy Sass says it will always be changing, and growing for the better.

“By complete, we are saying that all the spaces are full. But we have many ideas for making new spaces.

Some exhibitors may move on and others will take their places.

“We will be having many casual stallholders visiting the shed from time to time.”

During the renovation process, the shed has been open at weekends for business, and Kathy says the support from Tauranga public, and visitors, has been overwhelming.

“Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine we would have so much support.

Multi discipline academy opening Jiu jitsu, muay thai, taekwondo, whatever your style – a new multi martial arts academy with elite instructors is opening in Tauranga, offering all martial arts styles under one roof.

On October 12, The Martial Arts Academy – a new centre of excellence for martial arts – is opening in the city offering training from expert instructors from around the world.

The academy will not just offer one form of martial arts – but five. Keen martial artists can choose from Brazilian jiu jitsu, under the prestigious Roger Gracie banner, capoeira, muay thai, taekwondo and mixed martial arts.

Former world champion taekwondo instructor Christine Young says the academy is unique in that it brings several martial arts disciplines together in one training space.

“Especially, with the calibre of instructors who are instructing out of here,” says Christine.

Instructors include mixed martial arts instructor and trainer Roger Gracie, jiu jitsu fighter Kelvin Joseph, and Alexis Lazo – a heavy weight muay thai champion from Thailand.

Christine says many people are interested in martial arts but sometimes are unsure of which one to practise.

Even though the academy offers training from elite instructors – all levels will be taught from beginner to international competition.

An entertaining evening of talking heads Two local theatre legends take to the stage next week in an intimate performance of a truly modern classic.

‘Talking Heads’ by UK playwright, Alan Bennett, is a series of six groundbreaking monologues that are now

women’ and that means wonderfully immersive entertainment that leaves everyone wanting more – especially in the hands of local stage legends Geraldine Broderick and Christine Giddens.

In ‘Bed Among The Lentils’, Giddens adeptly plays the lonely but funny, wry but wise, wife of a popular, but inattentive small town vicar. “Jeffrey”, she says of her husband, “is bad enough. But I’m glad I’m not married to Jesus”.

The stories she tells of the parish are incredibly self-effacing and witty and her journey to self-enlightenment is warm and compelling.

Broderick delivers the performance of her career in ‘Soldiering On’, a truly moving piece about Muriel, a wealthy widow dealing with the aftermath of her husband’s death.

Polished and socially active, she has led a somewhat sheltered and charmed life that now spirals into tragedy.

Broderick retains Muriel’s dignity, determination and warmth; although her life is struggle, she finds the strength to ‘soldier on’.

A distinctive rocking horse on the veranda is how most people remember where the Crabbe House and Shop was located in the late 1800s, according to family descendant Sharon Sorenson.

“If you talk to people in Tauranga about the house on Cameron Rd with the rocking horse on the veranda, everyone knew where it was,” says Sharon, who still lives in Tauranga.

The house and shop – on the corner of Cameron Rd and Seventh Ave – belonged to Sharon’s great,

great grandfather George Alfred Crabbe.

According to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, George founded the store in 1877 before building a house next door in the 1890s.

When Sharon’s great grandparents Charles and Rebecca Crabbe married in 1899 – Charles took ownership of his father George’s shop. Six years later George died.

Sharon’s great grandparent’s house was later sold to Mr S.L Simmons, who married her grandmother – Charles and Rebecca’s only daughter – Violet Crabbe.

In 2003, the shop was donated to Tauranga Boys’ College, where the building now stands as a museum.

The house has been relocated to Pyes Pa Rd. Next week The Weekend Sun profiles the former native school and hostel at 83 Seventh Ave.

It’s true: history does repeat itself We see these all too common headlines: ‘Divorce rapidly increasing’, ‘Decay of religion and its values’, ‘Sports becoming increasingly violent’, ‘Obsession with pleasure and entertainment’, ‘Taxes and spending of public money increasing’, ‘The dignity and sanctity of the home undermined’.

Where did these headlines comes from? They were first printed 100plus years ago by historian Edward Gibbons in a book detailing the social conditions that led to fall of the Roman Empire. It’s true – history does repeat itself.

Yes, the local body elections are upon us again. The signs are out.

Campaigning is in full swing. Soon the votes will be counted, and some will be elated to be elected; others will be disappointed not to have made it.

Sadly, too many are completely

uninterested and may not even vote.

They say they’re not interested, and whatever the outcomes it doesn’t matter that much to them. An understandable position, but a wrong one. Pericles once said: “Just because you do not take an interest in politics, doesn’t mean that politics won’t take an interest in you”. Every political decision, locally and nationally, will have its impact upon us or our loved ones somewhere along the line. If we do not vote, we have no right to criticise or complain when unpalatable decisions are made by the court in the decades ahead.

It can be hard to decide who to vote for. But in my view some issues are clear.

Certainly, we want representatives (mayor, councillors and board members), who are men and women of values and integrity, who support family, and honesty. We want voices around our city’s decision making tables who believe in the future of our children, who are concerned about the protection of morality, who have foresight, but are also business savvy,

The rapture Paul speaks about the rapture of the Church most specifically in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17.

Although this great truth is woven into the promises of the return of Christ, some false perceptions hinder this doctrine being proclaimed.

The rapture is not an ‘escape card’ for a defeated Church taken away before it is overrun.

The rapture is not a new revelation that surfaced in the 1800s, as some teach.

Some doubt the doctrine of the rapture because the word “rapture” is not used in our bibles.

The word bible is not used in our bibles, nor is the word trinity, yet we don’t discount the bible or the Trinity on the basis that these exact words are not mentioned. Scripture makes it clear that the second coming of Christ is not just a single event.

Are you eagerly, constantly and patiently waiting for and expecting Him? His return is imminent.

practical, pragmatic, innovative, and decisive.

Who would volunteer to be such a person? Thankfully many have, (and they need our prayers). We have the incredible freedom and right to vote, to influence the future of our city and region.

That is something I, for one, value highly. So let’s vote to do our part to stop the headlines of history (as above), repeating in our beloved Bay of Plenty.
