Skinned Rabbit This week I rocked up to the Sin Centre, ripped my clothes off and a dude in a white coat was all over me, like a rash.

Now already I can hear you saying that I would be a prime candidate for the Sin Centre. However it turns out, that was a typing error.

I actually went to the Skin Centre, on Cameron Road.

The waiting room was very nice and had the most comfortable seats ever. We scored them nine out of ten. The only let-down was the selection of magazines, which had a strong women/gay interior designer focus.

Leaping off the top of the pile was Pippa Middleton on the cover of a woman’s weakly.

And when I say leaping, certain parts of Pippa were taking on three dimensional behaviours as she put the magazine cover through contortions that the hard working blokes at the Kawerau paper mill never envisaged for their 170gsm glossy stock.

Pippa must have been there for a skin check as well, as she was showing vast amounts of it. We’ve already given Pippa a fairly thorough checking out in the last year, so I’d be surprised if there was anything untoward about her skin surfaces that the rest of the world hasn’t already documented.

The good doctor went over my outsides checking for imperfections. Hard to believe I know, but, yes, we all have flaws. He remarked that I had a large and varied collection of fine old moles. At this stage I thought he should stop reading my old address book.

They might be old but it would be going a bit far to call all of them moles. Lovely old tarts aging gracefully, maybe, but moles is probably a bit derogatory.

By now most of their numbers will have changed, a lot

of them are overseas, some are still in the asylum and a few have gone lesbian.

Then I realised he was talking about spots on my back. Fortunately he finished his check and I got my gear back on quick, before his fascination with my mole collection made me worthy of being skinned, stitched and bound – and turned into a reference book.

Probably called ‘Skinned Rabbit’.

They did find a couple of items for further investigation. One was a small rash on a leg that I probably caught from the Sin Centre.

Then they photographed a gnarly thing that looked like a map of Alaska.

On close up inspection, you could see ice, trees and a few angry bears ripping the head off Sarah Palin.

They’ll be keeping an eye on that one, and if it starts changing – for example, if it starts looking like Australia, it’ll be time for action. Fair dinkum.

They’ll know it needs treatment when they can see little idiots with corks around their hats standing around a barbie with shrimps on it and some nearer the side of the deck drinking Fosters and trying to push Pauline Hansen off the edge.

I recommend y’all get a once-over regularly. It’s worthwhile peace of mind to know your outer layer isn’t harbouring anything nasty. Tauranga’s levels of damaging sun rays are amongst the highest in the world and with the region’s love of the outdoors and a wonderful climate, we have a high rate of skin cancers that claim too many good people.

We probably all know someone lost through this. Yet it’s easy and quick to have a regular check. Keep yourselves safe, people. It’s worth it, if only to browse the magazine covers.

Meanwhile this week, we’ve had some smouldering criticism from smokers, as expected, following our plan to



have them registered as sickos, banned from the free health system and generally treated like the second rate lepers that they are. Check out some of the nicotine-induced rantings in this week’s letters and also in the comments on SunLive.

One smoker, in complete denial, suggests we make up the figures on dead smokers! Yeah right, me and all the doctors in the world sat around having a bit of a laugh and decided it would be really funny to tell the world a huge porkie that smoking is dangerous...

It would be a lot easier if they just gave up, then we wouldn’t have to have this discussion. Find something else to do with your hands. Take up drumming.

Super size Sudoku

We’ve had a complaint about the size of our Sudoku, which as I explained in a previous column, we suspect is a small Japanese car. I have no idea why so many of you think we need a Sudoku – the Mitsubishis, Nissans and the Ford are going just fine.

But we try to keep everyone happy and therefore are interested to hear your feedback on our Sudoku, although I wouldn’t be surprised if you say it doesn’t have enough leg room.

Peter Wakelin says he needs it bigger, so there’s more space to make fairly complicated mathematical notes. (I think he should just get a roof rack for it.)

Peter went to quite a lot of trouble to point out examples of superior Sudokus, such as the one in the Listener. (They probably bought the luxury version with leather). We suspect Peter is not alone, so we’ve upgraded the size of the squares of the Sudoku, to bring you the stretched limo edition. That way you can fit in all sorts of confounding mathematical gymnastics. If that doesn’t work, forget it and take up smoking.

Opinion clashes on pokie reforms By: Ben Guild

A private members bill sponsored by Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell, which aims to hand the licensing of gaming machines to local government, is being slammed as a disaster-inwaiting by the current administrators.

Pub Charity chief executive Martin Cheer says the bill, if passed, would mean councils would have to raise funds to buy the machines, provide staff to maintain and administer them and distribute the funds to community boards.

“I admit this is my perspective, and it’s going to have a fairly large chunk of bias in it, but I think it would be counter-productive simply because of the volatility of local government politics.

“It’s like allowing local committees to set the speed limit.’’

Reform of the Gambling Act in 2004, which stipulated a minimum of 37 per cent of net gaming machine revenue be returned to

the community, has already dealt a fatal blow to small communities in which the machines had become untenable, as the vast majority of funds are considered against the area where the money was made, Martin says.

“What it did was make it so machines had to be in high population areas, or conversely, that people had to gamble more.’’

“Nationally the numbers (of machines) have declined by 24 per cent since 2005.’’

That has led to community funding falling by about 15 per cent, or 30 per cent when inflation is taken into account.

Martin says a further decline in numbers would likely mean another, more serious shortfall in community funding, encompassing sports, clubs, education, research, recreation, health, arts and more.

“It would be devastating. I would predict we’d lose a third of the machines overnight. The funding would drop by a third, perhaps more over time.’’

Nationally, there were fewer licence holders, gambling venues and gaming machines at the end of March compared with 12 months

earlier.

Licence holders fell 1.6 per cent from 365 to 359, venues declined by 1.8 per cent from 1430 to 1403 and gaming machines decreased by 2.6 per cent from 18,484 to 18,001. There are 2017 fewer gaming machines in pubs and clubs at March 2012 than there was in March 2008.

Te Ururoa says ‘major downstream effects’, ranging from family break-ups to a burdening of the criminal justice system, can be seen in communities where problem gambling is embedded.

The bill, which had its first reading on April 4, if passed, would allow local authorities, in consultation with their communities, to reduce the number of, or even eliminate, pokies from suburbs and towns where “they are particularly concentrated or doing particular harm’’, and is part of the relationship accord between the Maori and National parties.

The bill, which would still allow for the funding of community groups, would make the process of distributing funds more informed and democratically open and accountable, says Te Ururoa.

Growing community, feeding families

Merivale woman Deb McCarthy is a firm believer in helping yourself.

This belief, and a new interest in gardening, has prompted her to take the lead in setting up a community garden in the area.

“I can’t find a job, but I think this is a good way to use my time,” says Deb, who is the voluntary coordinator of the new Merivale Community Garden.

The garden is being set up on a bare section at the corner of Fraser St and Alverstoke Rd, after the state house onsite was destroyed by fire last year.

The project, which has been initiated by Merivale Community

Centre, has been given Housing New Zealand’s approval to use the site. Bay of Plenty tenancy services manager Peter McKenna says Housing New Zealand is happy to have the vacant site used as a community garden because of low housing demand in the area.

“There’s no timeframe on this but Merivale Community Incorporated has agreed to return the site when Housing New Zealand decides what action to take.”

Deb is not being put off by this lack of permanency, seeing it as a challenge to make it the best community garden possible and is encouraging more residents to grow vegetables to help put food on the table.

“We want to make it a great

success so they are happy for us to keep using it. The Government isn’t going to help us – but it’s something we can do to help ourselves.”

A working bee is being held on Saturday from 9.30am to clear the site of weeds and stones and prepare it be planted in green manure crops to add nitrogen to the sterile soil. She hopes the first edible crops will be ready in spring.

Deb wants the help of anyone interested at the working bee and donations of garden materials and tools. She says there will not be a charge to use the garden plots, but needs help to install a water tap and shed onsite. For more information, phone 07 571 2296.

Book ‘bananza’? Cool bananas!

Thousands of books will be up for grabs at the Tauranga Central Baptist Church on May 11-12 at the Cool Bananas Book Bananza.

Cool Bananas, an organisation that reaches 4500 primary school pupils in 19 schools weekly, is looking for donations of books, DVDs, CDs and appropriate magazines to sell.

Items can be dropped off at 16 Millers Rd, Brookfield, or can be collected before May 7.

Organiser Garth Collins says the books will include both fiction and non-fiction and $5 shopping bags of books will be available.

Last year’s sale raised more than $1000, but Garth believes he has a larger stockpile of items this year.

The sale will run from 6-8pm on May 11 and 8-11am on May 12.

Rolling sleeves up for community

Sexual assaults increased Police are partially at a loss to explain a significant increase in the number of sexual assaults and related offences reported in the Bay of Plenty Police District during 2011.

Forget about all those jokes about bankers – 70 BNZ team members from the Western Bay of Plenty are rolling up their sleeves and getting out from behind their desks to help at community projects on Tuesday.

Western Bay of Plenty programme coordinator Timothy Bell says staff are looking forward to getting involved in a range of projects as part of the bank’s annual Closed For Good event – to help give back to the community.

“Staff have a lot of fun, don’t mind getting dirty, they love the hard work and being in the community doing good for so many

worthy causes.”

Projects will include restoring and cleaning early settler gravestones at Katikati cemetery, weeding Marine Parade’s sand dunes, planting natives at Te Puna Quarry Park, sorting donated second-hand goods and working in the Rudolf Steiner School organics gardens and farm.

Rudolf Steiner gardener Anne Cumberworth welcomes the work from the bank, saying it will help get on top of tasks including tidying up the new school entrance, spreading mulch on the garden and pulling out weeds in the school farm.

“I think it will be good for them

to get their hands dirty and it’s also good for the children to see the people at the bank can do other things.”

This year bank staff are keen for community volunteers to join them on the projects. For details, visit www.closedforgood.org or speak to any BNZ staff member.

Those offences increased by 61.9%, or 135 offences, on the previous year, while the district’s overall recorded crime rate fell by 5.6%.

Bay of Plenty Police District crime manager, detective inspector Tim Anderson, says one reason for the increase could be a large number of historic offences being represented in the statistics, especially considering the recent ‘push’ on those abusing children and women.

A small number of offenders could also skew such statistics, he says.

“I remember a few years ago I was

working on a paedophile unit in Auckland and we were getting parliamentary questions on a 400 per cent increase in child abuse. That really came down to two or three offenders who were charged with a lot of individual offences.”

Still, Tim says it would be impossible to know for sure unless he was able to study the numbers, which, in a large and busy police district such as the Bay of Plenty, is not always possible.

“I haven’t had the opportunity to look at the numbers and even drill down into the data – it is a large number – I haven’t had the opportunity to look at why the change is.”

Nationally, there was a 15% increase in the number of sexual assaults in 2011, with about 450 more offences reported to police during that year.

“If it shows that they contain a substance already banned, they will be gone. If it shows they contain new untested substances, I will put in place the necessary Temporary Class Drug Notices to deal with it,’’ Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne said.

“If the industry thinks they can get around the law by changing a couple of ingredients, repackaging, re-branding and back to business the way they always have, then they have seriously misread the scope and potency of this law.

“We are not letting them make their profit by plying young New Zealanders with substances that are unproven and potentially unsafe.

Much of that was bluster – and he knew it. A cursory glance inside certain Bay of Plenty stores, many of which sit mere blocks from secondary schools, reveal Peter’s protestations to be partially false prophecy.

In early April, a further three synthetic cannabis substances found in products were banned, bringing the number of substances deemed illegal by Temporary Class Drug Notices under the Misuse of Drugs Act to 24 or, on average, about one per week.

Those substances, found in Spice Gold, Spice Diamond and Tai High, were the chemicals

AM-1248, AM-2232 and UR-144.

New Zealand Drug Foundation executive director Ross Bell says New Zealand’s 36-year-old drug laws mean the government is fighting a losing battle against the burgeoning industry until further reforms are made – and it knows it.

“Fundamentally, and Peter Dunne has said this himself, the changes they’ve made are only temporary, we need to go further. We need to have a law so these things have to be proven safe before they hit the market.’’

“NZ collects very poor drug stats.

“The Ministry of Health conducts a survey every three to four years, so the last one was done in 2008, which means the next one’s being done this year.

“In that period you could actually miss entire trends like synthetic cannabis.’’

New Zealand is not alone in its plight, he says.

Wholesale bans in the UK had led to more than 50 brands being on shelves within a year, while Western Australia’s attempts to ban Kronic had also come dramatically unstuck.

Ross says the law is likely to change this year, meaning the onus of proof will fall on manufacturers to demonstrate their products aren’t harmful.

Such products will also likely be required to include health warnings and be governed by age limits.

He describes the industry involved as ‘fast and loose’.

“I place the blame on the industry – they continued to put their middle fingers up to the government and their consumers.

“The industry has proven itself to be irresponsible for taking advantage of this slower timetable.”

Diminishing

A spokesman for Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne says the synthetic cannabis industry is now ‘significantly diminished’, even though official statistics on the use of the product have never been kept.

Twenty-four substances, and more than 50 products, have been banned since the stop-gap measure was introduced last year, and the industry was not replacing the products as quickly as they had promised.

The industry had taken a ‘substantial hit’ in recent times, including the withdrawal of its biggest supplier, and the spokesman says the permanent legislation coming later this year will further enforce a responsible approach from the industry.

Bay of Plenty Police District crime manager, detective inspector Tim Anderson, is not sure how many people are still using synthetic cannabis throughout the district, or how many outlets are selling it.

He says the reforms of last year had improved the situation, with anecdotal evidence suggesting usage has dropped. By Ben Guild

Container homes industry looks buoyant

“They are seamless, the joins which bind them are stronger than the pieces being wielded.

“An entire container house, if you had a big enough crane, could be picked up from one corner.

“They were designed to move everything on the planet to everywhere on the planet, so it’s had to take a huge amount of critical testing, and in a sense, that bumping and rattling is basically like an earthquake.’’

Second hand containers are now harder to get for several reasons.

Production dropped from 4.8 million to 400,000 annually and there are only 12 of the original 96 factories still working in Japan, while the Christchurch earthquakes have dictated that much of

New Zealand’s recycled stock has since headed south.

The result is that Earthcube homes has imported new containers that are structurally framed with the high tensile Corten steel uni-body of shipping containers and lined with sustainable laminated timbers.

Little wonder then, that Raratonga, often ravaged by hurricanes, will soon have its second hurricane and earthquake-proof Earthcube container house.

Chris, who previously built luxury kitchens, homes and yachts, says the inside of the homes are extremely robust.

“Everything in there is built to a legacy standard. It’s designed to last 100 years or more. There is no particle board, no GIB, no MDF…no-one has ever said to me ‘I’m doing a super yacht and I want to GIB it’.’’

The homes are relocatable, modular and fully integrated, like a yacht in a box, and have been specifically designed and then built at the Tauranga site for the last two years.

says the mayor and several key staff have assisted along the way as they saw the wider impact these homes could have.

The company is consolidating its base - five homes are currently under construction, four more are waiting to be built and three others have been completed.

Chris says the key to building a successful business is to think globally and focus on what you can be the best at.

The company has refrained from following the worldwide trend

Taking a closer look at a the pipe problem City councillors this week took a closer look at a problem expected to cost the city between $300,000 and $400,000 to fix.

The treated sewage pipeline from the Te Maunga treatment plant to the ocean outfall broke last September during pressure testing. The leak was repaired, but the council’s legal and moral obligation to reinstate the fore-dune where the leak occurred has opened the door to a range of issues.

They can’t just refill the hole for two reasons. The area is ecologically, culturally and historically significant. The remediation work requires a resource consent, which, with the design work, has been obtained at a cost of $22,800.

the ‘thrust block’ between the land side of the outfall pipe and the more heavily constructed and wire-tensioned 900m undersea outfall.

The five wires that hold the undersea outfall structure together are anchored in the flawed junction structure. If any of them fail, the whole undersea outfall may fall to bits.

The council is ready to go to tender on the contract, which is a precursor to a major rebuild of the entire outfall to keep pace with the city’s growth.

The first stage of that expansion is to increase the size of the pipeline from the treatment plant from its current diameter of 600mm to 1500mm. That will cost $8 million and is expected in 2017.

The land is owned by the Nga Potiki iwi, and the council has an easement for the pipeline.

More good money after bad?

Tauranga’s so-called heritage in the form of the Historic Village and The Cargo Shed are set to cost ratepayers plenty into the future.

Council decided to basically maintain the status quo at the village with the option of a different form of administration, such as a Trust to run it. Unfortunately I had to leave the meeting prior to this item coming up, so elected members were unable to hear my pearls of wisdom. As had been noted previously, when you have a conglomer-

ation of old buildings placed on swampy ground prone to flooding, you have an inherent and ongoing maintenance problem.

Festering problem

That’s how it’s been historically and that’s how it will be into the future – in my view. Compass Trust, sponsored

by Mr Des Ferrow, found the going too draining (financially as well) so it’s unlikely another trust would be a goer.

When I first got on council, the village was already a festering sore. I was called

in by Bob Owens, in his capacity as a village donor of the tug Taioma, to referee an altercation between the city manager of the day (Mr Montacute) and Noel Nicholls and Alec Tempest. Noel and Alec weren’t jumping through the hoops set by the city manager, so we were able to arrive at an armed neutrality. Central to the issue was what was going to happen to the village and who was going to pay.

All the years in between and nothing much has changed. Prior to Compass taking over the in mid ‘90s, ratepayers were paying around $650,000 per year to keep the village going. You can double that today and all the talk about self-funding will come to naught when the maintenance, and lack of it, day of reckoning is factored

an estimated $35,000 to brace this ‘heritage’ building. Even the Historic Places Trust, which has no monetary responsibility, is trying to get in on the act. Both ends of the building will be demolished as they are unsafe and the remaining centre part will be braced against earthquake, pending a decision sometime in the future about what the future of The Cargo Shed will be. Meantime it fetches $4100 in annual rent from Creative Tauranga. Well that’s a great economic decision, isn’t it?

One councillor said The Cargo Shed would make for a great restaurant and cafe scene. Just what Tauranga needs – more eateries!

Sentimental attachment and self-interest seem to be the overriding factors in delaying, once again, the inevitable financial demise of the village unless there is massive ratepayer financial input at some time in the not-too-distant future.

Ironically elected members then moved to a ‘Value for Money’ workshop where broad principles of how council conducts its business were discussed. At long last there is a trend away from use of consultants for run of the mill work. It’s easy to see why consultants were being used. With the transparency, accountability and media scrutiny Local Government is subject to, you cover your backside by having a consultant involved. Obviously specialist consultancy advice is the exception. But if you do things ‘in-house’, there is an element of risk. You get nothing for nothing and mistakes will occur. Already

Risk vs reward

Running the Southern Pipeline straight across the harbour to Matapihi would potentially save a lot of money. Plus not having to rip up Devonport Road and ensuing traffic disruption is a huge attraction. But the ground across the harbour in that area is susceptible to liquefaction in the event of earthquake. Risk vs reward – it’s a judgement call and staff are now looking more at this element rather than going for the Rolls Royce version every time.

Submissions to the annual/three year/10 year plan have closed;

692 submissions with the Mobile Library, Soper Reserve (next to Brewers Bar on Newton Street) and Aspen Reserve downtown, being highlights for submitters.

But 117,308 of you didn’t submit and those people’s interests need to be considered also. Unfortunately some elected members aren’t able to walk the walk after talking the talk about rates, sustainability, cost-cutting and asset sales, judging from their reaction around recent issues.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too and this round of submissions, deliberation and decision-making will be a watershed leading into next year’s elections.

Go wide for good fishing Last weekend Western Bay anglers had difficulty finding fish in the inshore fishery, but out wide fish remained plentiful.

At Papamoa Beach last weekend kontiki fishers and surfcasters found very few fish. Our veteran kontiki fisher during the week brought in a few snapper, but at the weekend managed only one. Surfcasters in considerable numbers over three nights landed not a single fish.

Russell Anderson (Bugger) with two other anglers on Saturday found the Tauranga Harbour fishing spots all dried up. Fishing randomly they landed in total just three snapper and three kahawai. Then Russell fished for two hours at the Kaituna Cut to land one kahawai.

Early last week Garth Le Lievre (Deepstar) and the anglers aboard at Mayor and the Puka Grounds found the fishing ‘pretty good’ landing good bluenose in the 15kg – 26kg range, and some good tarakihi. Midweek they again got good bluenose, as well as some gemfish and a 15kg bass.

found fishing outside Motiti ‘okay’. On Sunday back to Motiti they found the fishing there still reasonable and ‘pretty steady’. They landed mainly tarakihi, snapper, but also some red snapper and trevally.

The New Zealand Contractors’ Federation Tauranga One-Day Six Species tournament Saturday April 28 saw 89 anglers weigh in 103 fish. Michael Brock fishing from Force 5 landed the heaviest fish of the tournament – a 6.295kg snapper. Other heaviest of species winning catches included Darryl Reihana’s 3.74kg trevally, Robyn Pederson’s 2.31kg kahawai, Bert Vermeulan, 1.45kg john dory.

Bay wheelchair rugby ready to roll Baypark’s new TECT Arena will host the first leg of the New Zealand Rugby Foundation Wheelchair Rugby Competition on May 12-13 after Parafed Bay of Plenty won the rights to host the tournament.

Regional Coachforce Parafed development officer Sophie Jackson says the Paralympic sport is new to the Bay, with players from the region previously having to travel to Hamilton to play for a Waikato club.

The tournament will run alongside Parafed ‘Have a Go Days’ on May 11-12, in which the greater physical disability community can compete in blokarting, wheelchair basketball and rugby, table tennis and boccia.

The activities are designed to showcase sports with supported pathways at any level through to the Paralympics. “We have been working hard in the Bay of Plenty community to establish networks and programmes to cater for people with all sorts of physical disability,” says Sophie.

“Now is our chance to show them off and make sure people are making the most out of what’s on offer!”

I was surprised to receive an invite from an old work colleague to attend the Tauranga Sunrise Rotary Club recently. By “Sunrise”, they were serious and met at 7.00am!

As I admitted to the audience, I wondered what the heck I was doing speaking with them, as hardly anyone there could vote for me! The point was made in

jest and I had an opportunity to talk about my life and Parliament. I think from the questions at the end, that they got a better understanding about the life of a politician, more particularly, a Māori Party politician.

I have to say that I appreciated the audience for wanting to hear from me and engage in discussions. But what I found most revealing was to realise, once again, that there is a fundamental

lack of knowledge and understanding about how democracy works in this country for both Māori and non-Māori.

This Mothers’ Day when you are thinking of gifts, consider what makes mum the most happy.

No matter whether your mum loves surfing or netball, knitting or painting, is a gardener or a hunter there is one thing she will share with all other mothers.

It is her deep love for her children.

The present that will probably mean the most to mum this Mothers’ Day is a photo of her family.

Leading Mount Maunganui professional photographer Bob Tulloch has been helping preserve memories for generations with his inspired images of Bay of Plenty families.

“All mums love photos of their children – or if they are grandmothers, pictures of their grandchildren are always popular,” says Bob. To get the best image he always meets with the family

for a chat before even picking up the camera so he can learn what’s important to them to help create an authentic image.

Being based at the Mount, he often shoots family portraits on the beach, but says wherever the photo shoot is done it needs to be relevant to the subjects.

“Not everyone is in to the beach, so sometimes we might do the shoot in a park or somewhere else outdoors, or in the studio.”

Bob is doing an increasing number of photos in his studio – often taking black and white images to create a smart, contemporary feel, nothing like the old studio photos.

Whether it is a portrait of the proud parents of a newborn, primary school aged siblings, teenagers at secondary school or young adults about to fly the coop, it is always a good time to preserve family memories with a great photo.

A rocking-good time The Te Puke Country Music Club’s 21st Charity Show will be held this Saturday night.

The night will be packed full of live, national talent, with everything from a ukulele band to an impressionist, and all proceeds go to Te Puke St John Ambulance Association.

Invigorating show Guest conductor Mal Brady will conduct Bay of Plenty Symphonia during the Ryman Healthcare Showtime concerts at Baycourt Centennial Theatre, May 26-27.

Mal, who has taught music in some of the country’s top music departments, has played with, and conducted, many top orchestras, shows, operas, bands and choirs around New Zealand and previously led the Symphonia in two extremely popular concert series, Music of the Theatre and Music of the Dance.

He has also composed commissions for orchestras and choirs, written music for television and radio, composed the music for the New Zealand short film Blood and Bone and recently completed writing and recording the music for the new BOP Tourism video.

Mal’s outstanding creative talents once again came to the fore when he conceived the story and wrote the music for the spectacular stage show Colourful Soul, which premiered last year to high acclaim at Mount Maunganui, and is preparing further productions at home and abroad.

The symphonia will commence the concert with selections from Les Miserables with guest soloist, mezzo soprano, Anna Hawkins, singing the popular I Dreamed a Dream. Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina and Habenera from Carmen and O Mio Babbino Caro are also included in the programme.

Local talented violinist Amelia Taylor will excite with Sarasate’s showpiece Introduction et Tarantelle.

The audience will be hard-pressed to keep up with her fingers flashing on the finger boards.

and surrounds this September If you’re keen for an amazing trip to Australia, join me in September as I make my way through Sydney, exploring the city’s most enjoyable aspects.

Our adventure begins in Nowra, 150km south of Sydney, where we will stay for one night before making our way to Hay in the morning.

After a cruise on the second day with several comfort stops, we will enjoy a Highlights of Hay tour with a local guide before making our way to Mildura for lunch on day three. Mildura is an area rich with history and after lunch we will witness many impressive interpretive displays tracing the story of the Chaffey brothers and their verdant irrigation vision of 100 years ago.

We then continue across to the Riverland of South Australia, where we stop in Barmera for dinner.

Historic sites

Day four we make our way to Morgan, stopping at Morgan’s Historic Museum before continuing to the historic copper mining town of Burra for lunch. The copper mines were first discovered in 1845 and were operated by Cornish and Welsh miners until 1877. We will take a tour of historic buildings, lookouts and the Redruth Gaol.

After bidding Burra farewell we move on to Port Augusta for dinner.

Day five, we visit the Arid Lands Botanical Gardens, where we will enjoy a tour of the natural flora and tracks through the gardens. Later we visit the multiaward winning Wadlata Outback Centre, depicting the history of the Flinders Rangers from 15 million years ago.

Later we will board our Sunset Eco Dinner Cruise and discover a unique waterway at the foot of the Flinders Ranges.

Day six, we depart early and head up through Woomera to Roxby Downs for an interpretive display and video presentation on the Olympic Dam Mine and Roxby Downs itself. The mine is located 12km from the township and is the world’s largest mine deposit of uranium oxide, copper, gold and silver. Later in the day we arrive back down in Port Augusta for dinner.

Day seven, our destination is Arkaroola. We board the famous Pichi Richi Railway service as we turn the clock back to the 1930s. Afternoon tea is at the scrumptious Bush Bakery in Copley, before continuing on our way up into the 61,000 hectare wildlife sanctuary of Arkaroola.

Day eight, a tour of some of the most spectacularly rugged country on earth in open-top 4WDs. Later we have the option of a scenic flight across the northern Flinders Ranges before

dinner in the Native Pine Restaurant.

Day nine, we travel back across the Copley, stopping for a cuppa in the Leigh Creek Tourist Centre. Later on we take a walk into the Hill Homestead site and Wangarra Lookouts which offer wonderful panoramic views of Wilpena Pound. Dinner is under the watchful eye of Rawnsley Bluff.

Day 10 will be spent in the Flinders Ranges with our local guide taking us through a number of eye-catching stops, including a drive down to a favourite spot for kangaroos.

Miniatures

Day 11 is time to bid the Flinders Ranges farewell and travel down through Hawker, stopping to view the magnificent giant Wilpena Pound Panorama. We continue on to the historic township of Peterborough.

Peterborough is home to Meldonfield – a miniature world of yesteryear, hand-crafted including miniature horse drawn vehicles.

Day 12 we make our way to Echuca enjoying comfort stops for morning tea and lunch before boarding the famous P.S. Pevensey, which starred as the Philadelphia in the international mini-series All the Rivers Run. We will relish a one-hour leisurely cruise as we soak in the history of the Murray River.

Later we enjoy a very unique experience as we visit the Dancing Emus before dinner.

The last three days of our trip are spent making our way back towards home, with many comfort stops and an adventure tour of Flinders Ranges.

We say goodbye to our new Australian friends before transferring back to Sydney Airport for a flight to Auckland.

Are your pets properly protected?

Vaccinations are recommended by veterinarians to help prevent various infectious diseases.

We can vaccinate dogs against parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, kennel cough and leptospirosis. For cats, we have vaccines for the various components of feline respiratory disease (cat flu or snuffles), panleukopenia and the feline AIDS virus. We have a vaccine for rabbit calicivirus. And if your pet is traveling overseas, sometimes the rabies vaccination is required.

Some of these diseases are transmitted in the air from dog to dog, or cat to cat, while others require a bite wound for transmission.

Some are transmitted via a host animal such as rats, and others can survive in the environment for many months, just waiting for a susceptible animal to pass by. Your

veterinarian can advise you on which vaccinations would be most suitable for your pet.

Vaccines do not cure disease. The vaccine contains a virus or bacterium that has been specially altered so it doesn’t cause disease; it stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies that protect against that particular disease in the future.

For most vaccinations the initial dose requires a booster three weeks later. This is partly because young animals receive antibodies from their mother’s milk, and these interfere with the vaccine. As the maternal antibodies wane, the two puppy or kitten vaccines are able to provide protection. Also, the booster dose improves the

immunity provided by the initial vaccination.

Once your pet has been vaccinated, the protection provided by that particular vaccine will gradually decline, so annual to triennial boosters are usually required.

Joerg, whose special interest is orthopaedics, says it has been ‘mind-boggling’ how busy the Mobile Vet has been after only two years.

It’s a lot less stressful, especially for busy business owners and cat owners, says Joerg.

Cat left for dead, loses leg A three-legged cat is looking for a home after being hit by a car on Sterling Gate Drive and left for dead.

The accident happened on Friday night and the cat’s leg was amputated on Sunday.

Frith Bartlett found the ginger, short-haired cat and says its leg was badly broken as a result of being hit by the car.

“I was sitting and watching TV last Friday night, and the neighbour came knocking at the door and asked us if we had a ginger cat.

“Because they assume all the cats in the neighbourhood are ours.

“I said no, why? He said one has been hit on the road.” Frith, who is training as a veterinary nurse, went and had a look and thought it was dead.

“I went to get a shovel to move it and it had crawled off under the hedge.

“I’m working at a vet’s practice doing my nursing

training and went out and had a look under the hedge and here was this beautiful cat, with a very, badly broken back leg.”

The first family of police dogs An old Tauranga police dog was taught some new tricks at the New Zealand Dog Championships in Trenthan last week – by his own progeny.

Senior constable Kayne Cording and Yoda finished out of the medals after coming fourth in a field of 12 dog-patrol teams, but the canine was still represented on the dais by a couple of his offspring.

Yoda sired four of the dogs competing in the competition, including Whakatane police dog Isaac, who finished second overall beside handler constable Jamie Kerr, and third-placed Wellington police dog Ike, handled by Wellington constable Andrew Douglas.

National coordinator of police dogs, inspector Brendon Gibson, says it was excellent to see the success of the police dog breeding programme reflected in the fact that 11 of the 12 patrol dogs competing had been bred by police.

Two other categories of competition featured narcotic and explosive detector teams comprising police, customs, corrections and aviation security handlers.

Senior constable Ross Clarke and Archie from Auckland won the Narcotic Detector Championship title and the AMidstone Auto Point Trophy for highest marks in locating white powders.

Canine parade Pet lovers from around the Bay will unite at Mount Maunganui’s Coronation Park for a dog parade on May 6.

The event, on 11am-2pm, is being run by GottaPet – a recently launched online social network for pet lovers which already has more than 600 members.

Show Dogs Grooming Parlour will attend to offer advice and the SPCA will be running a sausage sizzle, while competitions will be held for best dog trick, tallest and shortest dog, and youngest and oldest dog.

A photographic competition, featuring costumed owners posing with their four-legged friends, will also feature.

Left in Brooke’s wake

Young Te Puna school girl Brooke Wilson is carving out a reputation as a future wakeboarding star – with high hopes to be picked to compete at the next world wakeboarding championships.

After starting the sport only three years ago, the Bethlehem College Year 5 pupil has made rapid progress in the sport, coming second in the girls’ under 10 category at last year’s nationals before winning the event this year.

Mother Michelle Malcolm says Brooke was excited by her success at the recent competition at Lake Karapiro but is now focussed on selection for the team to compete at the world champs.

“They are announcing the team pretty soon and we have our fingers crossed – but I would imagine she might be seen as a bit young to go the worlds.

“She’s done as much as she can – and now it’s up to the selectors.”

Brooke’s wakeboarding includes a mix of surface tricks – including riding backwards on the board and 360s – and small wake jumps while she increases strength in her arms for bigger air tricks.

Red Cross turning 184 May 8 will mark 184 years to the day since the birth of Red Cross founder Henry Dunant in1828.

Years later, while travelling on a business trip in 1859, he witnessed the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in Italy and recorded his experiences in the book A Memory of Solferino, which inspired the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863, and helped inform the Geneva Convention in 1864.

Henry died in Switzerland in 1910, but what the shared recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize believed in, and fought for, can be seen in most countries today. His legacy will be celebrated in 180 countries worldwide on May 8, including at the Red Cross Service Centre in Greerton, where birthday cake, a soft-toy giveaway and a historic

memorabilia display, including medals, uniforms, certificates, photos and publications, will take centre stage.

The Red Cross is the largest humanitarian organisation in the world and locally delivers Meals on Wheels, first aid training, AEDs and kits, looks after hospital flowers for patients, and presents numerous other community programmes.

Red Cross events co-ordinator Heather Dabrowski says this year’s celebration revolves around young people.

“This year the theme for World Red Cross Day is ‘Youth on the Move’, and I want to take this opportunity to extend our sincere thanks to the hundreds of wonderful young people who make such an incredible contribution assisting Red Cross fundraising and activities in the Tauranga area.”

Under-insurance an issue in NZ

A benchmark for your information is typically some index put together by an organisation to track the performance of a market, for example the NZX 50 is an index that measures the performance of the NZ Share Market.

If your portfolio has performed in line with this index on a gross basis but net of adviser fees then you should be happy, if not then you should ask questions. Of course then the question is how long should you endure underperformance? That is a hard one to define but if your adviser can give you reasons why there is underperformance and you are comfortable with then you might be able to ride this out in the short term because changing portfolios can often bring about cost as well.

Organisers of a contest that offers young fruit growers the chance to enhance their careers are seeking nominations for the 2012 Bay of Plenty Young Fruit Grower of the Year competition.

Former winner Robert Humphries is urging those under 30 working in the fruit sector to enter this year’s event.

“Sometimes it’s hard to put yourself forward for this kind of competition so we also ask employers, friends and families to make nominations too. Everyone who enters gains much from the experience,” says Robert, who took part in 2006 and 2007 and went on to represent the region at the national Young Grower of the Year competition.

Entries for the 2012 Bay of Plenty Young Fruit Grower close May 31 and the competition will be held in Tauranga in June. It is billed as a fun-filled and challenging day in which contestants undertake

a range of horticultural related theory and practical activities.

The competition’s emphasis is on practical production skills relating to orcharding, business skills associated with growing, and knowledge of the industry.

“Entering gives you the chance to test your skills and knowledge alongside your peers and to meet new people, including leaders in the industry.”

The winner of the regional contest will receive $1500 in cash and a one-day media and presentation course in Wellington, as well as an all-expenses paid trip to the Horticulture New Zealand Conference in Auckland to compete for the title of New Zealand Young Fruit Grower and Young Grower of the Year. The prize for second place in the Bay contest is $1000 and $500 for third.

Painful joint disease ant (Part 2)

Due to an editorial error, Part 1 of this column ran in The Weekend Sun on April 13.

Last month we identified the main types of joints and discussed osteoarthritis, the most common degenerative joint disease.

Today we look at rheumatoid arthritis and gout, which are two common but very different joint diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) belongs to a large group of autoimmune diseases that affect joints.

Inflamation

With RA the immune system thinks that joint tissue is foreign and starts an inflammatory attack on joint tissue, starting with the synovial membrane. This becomes a magnet for a cocktail of immune system generated inflammatory chemicals that migrate into the joint cavity, causing swelling and thickening. The end result is swollen, inflamed, painful and eventually deformed joints.

The medical response is various anti-inflammatory and immune suppressing medications in order to restrict over-production of inflammatory compounds.

To make things worse, these inflammatory chemicals release a barrage of free radicals which

damage tissues, causing more inflammation. This is really a vicious cycle and the only nutritional way to improve the confused immune system is to target both inflammation and free radicals by adding a wide range of antiinflammatory and antioxidant compounds. These include Omega 3, grape seed OPCs, acai extract, resveratrol, turmeric and several others including n-acetylcysteine and alpha lipoic acid, which recycle antioxidants.

Different types

Gout is a different type of arthritis and is caused by an accumulation of uric acid as crystals in synovial membrane of joints, often in the big toe. The presence of uric acid crystals then triggers an inflammatory response. While the uric acid crystals are painless, the heat, swelling, redness and pain are caused by the inflammatory response. The common medical treatments involve drugs that block

uric acid production and various anti-inflammatory medications.

The nutritional medicine approach to gout includes adding foods and supplements that help the body produce less uric acid and help combat the inflammatory cascade that is the real cause of the pain.

People with gout often have other problems, including blood sugar problems and often cardiovascular risk factors, which is why I prefer a much broader approach to gout. This includes specific gout remedies such as tart cherry to broad spectrum antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrients. This is normally very effective and can in most cases be safely taken with gout medication.

high school students as part of Attitude – a programme designed to teach teenagers about substances like alcohol, smoking, marijuana and designer drugs.

“It’s cool to be able to share these things with the kids and give them hope if they are going through that at home.”

Students heard statistics on alcoholrelated deaths and were asked questions such as ‘who would want to be in a car with someone smoking and all the windows shut?’

Tauranga Girls’ College year 10 students Ella Williams and Ana Morris say the Attitude presentation touched areas that students struggle with.

They say alcohol is the biggest issue with their peers because it’s legal.

“Lots of people our age deal with it at school,” says Ella.

“It was really neat to hear how it would affect you.”

Ana says while the programme really opened her eyes, she thinks a lot of girls won’t take it to heart.

“It’s sort of thought of as normal, they don’t really think those things will happen to them.

“I think that people who already like that sort of stuff don’t really care, but then lots of people would take it into account.”

Gardening guide for May May already, the last month of autumn, and it is only six weeks to the shortest day of the year.

That means it is time to plant the garlic and shallots. You can do this any time during May, June and July and even into August for later crops, but tradition says for garlic, plant on the shortest day of the year and harvest on the longest.

Garlic and

shallots will be available in store in a couple of weeks.

When planting garlic, only plant good strong New Zealand grown corms. Don’t plant imported ones as these are mostly treated and will

damage the foliage but with the use of frost cloth in frost prone areas they would grow fine. One of the best advantages of growing potatoes in the winter is that you should not have problems of the potato psyllid which can destroy crops during the summer months. Another job needing attention now, if you are wanting

more, is to lift and replant strawberry runners direct into new rows.

In the flower garden there is plenty to do, clean up old bedding plants and replant with winter varieties such as pansies, violas, polyanthus, primula and cineraria.

These all make a very colourful garden during the winter months. Another job is to cut back the herbaceous plants to tidy them up for the winter.

Don’t forget to put containers of tender plants in sheltered spots and keep them on the dry side during the winter as too much water can be harmfull during the colder weather.

If you have deciduous trees that are now loosing the leaves, rake up the leaves and put into a heap to compost during the winter, don’t leave them sitting on the lawn for too long and enjoy your winter garden.

Communities bring gardens closer Community gardens proposed for Welcome Bay and Mount Maunganui are progressing slowly, but the groups behind both projects hope to make major steps forward soon.

Welcome Bay Community Garden Project coordinator Anna Larsen says group members have been ‘plugging through the paperwork’ for the formal application to lease the Selwyn Park garden site from the council.

Anna says the application, which includes establishing a management plan the garden group, should be finished this month – but is uncertain how long before a council decision.

“The council has

given the go-ahead, pending final application completion and approval. Then the next step is seeking finance.”

Funds need to be raised to cover an estimated $20,000 in setup costs – based on the Otumoetai Community Garden it is being modelled on.

The Welcome Bay project was given general community endorsement at a gala open day held in Selwyn Park in October. Residents’ main concern was that field space will be lost, but the vast majority of the area will be untouched.

Anna hopes the garden – which will comprise a series of allotments – will be set up by September, with the first produce harvested by Christmas.

Meanwhile the Lions Club of Mount Maunganui is planning a survey of Mount Maunganui residents for feedback on the best possible site for a community garden. The club is spearheading a push for a garden at Banks Hall Reserve, but another possible site is Moa Park.

Club secretary Brian Dey says initial consultation with residents in the neighbouring May St and Rita St residents has shown ‘overwhelmingly positive support’ for the 60m x 20m community garden area at the park’s southern end, preserving two-thirds of the reserve for active use.

“We are hoping to do the survey as soon as possible, but it’s too early to say how long (the project) will take.”

Gas heater safety tips As the winter chill starts to bite and heaters are being pulled out around the Western Bay – it is time to think about keeping your house safe by having your gas heater and cylinder checked.

Gas Fire and Cylinder Service owner Merv Ingram says regular checks are vital to extend the heater’s life and to ensure your family’s safety.

“Cabinet gas heaters need to be given a good check and service every two-three years. If you use your heater all the time you should get it checked every year.”

Merv is sometimes surprised by the state of cabinet heaters when they come in and urges everyone to be aware of safety issues.

“If you can smell gas you need to get it checked for a leak.”

When cabinet heaters are checked they look for leaks, perished hoses, a build-up of dust and that all parts are working properly.

Along with checking your heater, he encourages home-owners to see if their LPG bottle is certified – with all bottles needing to be checked every 10 years.

Safety guidelines from the Ministry of Economic Development recommend LPG cabinet heaters are kept more than a metre away from people or flammable items such as curtains, clothes, furniture and rugs.

Fire guards or some protection should be placed around the heater to reduce the risk of people being burnt, and the recommendations advise that clothes never be hung on a heater to dry, as this is a common cause of fires.

There are plenty of small steps you can take to help keep your home snug even before turning your heater on.

Blocking draughts, turning your thermostat off and smart use of fans are just a few tips from sustainable information website www.econation.co.nz on conserving your home’s warmth.

With draughts wasting 6-9 per cent of home energy use, it could be time to haul out gran’s old ‘draught snake’, or simply put a rolled bath towel across the bottom of leaky doors or windows.

Fans are a great way to spread cool air in summer, but if your ceiling unit can be switched to

run in reverse (clockwise) it will make your home seem warmer by making an up-draught that sends the warmer air by the ceiling back into the living space. This can cut your heating costs by up to 10 per cent.

At the same time remember to always turn off your kitchen or bathroom fan – it can suck all the heat out of an average house in an hour.

Major heating savings can also be made by remembering to turn down the thermostat when you leave the house, to only heat the

rooms you are using and put on extra layers (a heavy jersey adds about two degrees in extra warmth.)

Other tips include making the most of passive solar heating by opening curtains and blinds and seal any small gaps in your building where air sneaks in.

A better way to reduce power costs Please, let’s keep the horse in front of the cart. Yes, we want to support disadvantaged people in our community.

But to do so through an on-going subsidy on resource use is a dangerous step backwards.

We tried ‘farming for the subsidy’ under the Muldoon Government. Twenty five years ago, we painfully weaned our farmers off those subsidies. It took some time for them to say thank you, but they wouldn’t go back to it now.

Elderly folk already receive a range of subsidies through the Super Gold Card. Those benefits, such as riding free on buses that are mostly empty anyway, are not a significant cost on the community and are welcomed by most of us.

Subsidising power costs would come at a huge cost.

And where is the benefit? Such a subsidy would likely promote power use, and it would simply redirect tax income into the hands of the Power Co’s.

They are currently owned by the government, but soon their shareholders will likely include big business, superannuation programmes, and overseas investors.

No doubt they would be very happy to have taxpayers throw more money into their collective pot through a subsidy.

Of course we should support the elderly, and we already do. But in this case there is a better way.

Barry Hodder (65) and Phil Edwards (88) of the Vale St retirement village tell us that their average power bill

is about $160 every two weeks. These are huge bills, and I cannot imagine the power use that creates them.

I live in a large old two-story house, difficult to insulate and heat, but we have done what we can to retrofit it for energy conservation. There are four of us, including two small children.

Our power bill for April was $86. That is $42 for two weeks, one quarter of what Barry and Phil are paying.

Our monthly bill is never over $100, including in winter (when we use wood for heating).

Barry and Phil surely live in much more modern houses than I do, smaller and more efficient, and I assume they don’t have children living there.

The best way to reduce their power costs would be to retrofit their houses for energy efficiency. A retrofit is not about compromising comfort (such as heating).

Voting for your favourite market Voting for the 2012 Taste Awards is open and people are encouraged to vote for the Tauranga Farmers Market, which competes against other markets in the country.

The market has a variety of things to entice people, from fresh fruits and vegetables to freshly baked artisan foods, all accompanied by live entertainment.

Manager Trixie Allen says Welcome Bay Plunket will be at the market until May 26 as they are the birthday hamper recipients for this year’s birthday celebrations.

The market has many aspects to it, including giving local children the chance to perform live.

Tauranga three-year-old Jaidstar Waite took to the stage at Tauranga Primary School on Saturday, April 28, to perform with entertainer Anthony Coulter.

Trixie says Jaidstar is just one of their customer’s sons who has sung a favourite song with Anthony.

She says it was a great opportunity to see a young talent doing what he loves.

Fabulous feijoas

The perfect fix

Feijoas are everywhere at the moment and they have attracted lots of attention from food producers, sweet makers, even beer has been given the feijoa makeover.

There is nothing like a great coffee on the run to get you started in the morning, well anytime really.

This popular fruit, which can be used in sweet and savoury dishes, originates from Brazil. The strong, complex nature of the fruit often makes it a challenge to match with other fruits, but as feijoas only last for a few days once picked, you have to use them and constant harvesting is advised. So on to what

to do with all those feijoas falling off the trees at the moment. Well there are smoothies, cakes, jams; feijoas brushed with balsamic and brown sugar alongside pork chops or added chopped to salads, and of course, with apples in a crumble - often a family favourite. You can find many recipes for cakes and muffins and basically you can use any recipe that uses bananas or pineapple. Ginger and chocolate flavourings also go well.

After last week’s master class in complex curries I thought I would make it easier for you this week with a simple and useful feijoa chutney.

Dazz’s Feijoa Chutney Ingredients 3kg peeled and chopped feijoas skins on 6 Granny Smith apples chopped with of palm sugar 6 discs 2 & 1/2 cups brown sugar or try 2 cups cider vinegar 1 cup malt vinegar 1 x 4cm chunk root ginger, grated 1tablespoon mixed spice 1teaspoon ground cardamom 1 cup dried sultanas 2 star anise a peeler Zest of 2 lemons, cut thick zest with Method Place all ingredients except sultanas, apples and feijoa in saucepan with a heavy base and bring to a simmer for 20 minutes. Strain off lemon zest and star anise.

Add in the Granny Smiths, cook for 10 minutes then add the sultanas and last the chopped fei-

joas; that way the chutney is over half way cooked and the feijoa retains most of its bulk.

Pack into warm sterilised jars after testing the fluidity by leaving a spoon full on a plate in the fridge. Using this method the whole process takes about one and a half hours.

The test plate should wrinkle and leave a path when run through with your finger.

This chutney tastes great with any cheese and I also love it with cold chicken cuts. The sweetness factor changes when using palm sugar but don’t be afraid to try it as it’s a healthier form of sugar.

The Med served me up a nice hot and extremely creamy cup of takeaway coffee made from Karajoz beans.

Refresher course offered for oldies

Age Concern is taking the worry out of driving, by conducting a friendly driver refresher course for mature road users.

Course coordinator Jim Wilson says the course is designed to be a fun way to up-skill on the road, providing informative information in a social and interactive setting.

Additional skills

The course is designed to keep drivers on the road for longer – giving the driver the skills to know if it is time to cease driving.

Jim says the course ensures drivers are keeping their driving skills up-to-date and are aware of any changes to the Road Code.

The course focuses on a number of topics, including new road rules, intersection rules, roundabouts, car care and maintenance, and rural and urban driving.

Other aspects within these topics are how to use passing lanes, weather conditions, eye sight and hearing checks, as well as medication and how it can affect driving.

I don’t believe you!

You probably know that your article in the Weekend Sun Fri 27 April would get a few comments.

Yes, I am a smoker.

For a start I never smoke around nonsmokers - whether at home, at work, or out in the community.

And I have worked all my life and pay taxes which go towards hospital treatment for myself or anyone else.

I could write a page about the fat people who disgust me with their overeating and the cost to the health system they cause.

And where’s your article about banning doughnuts and cakes or putting the prices of fatty foods (and greasy takeaways) up to $100. Oh no, you couldn’t do that because too many non-smokers would be offended that someone’s telling them what they can and can’t eat!

And what about putting the price of a can or bottle of alcohol up to $100?

That would never happen cause too many non-smokers probably love their alcohol, and so do politicians, so that would never become law.

I’m just peeved off, cause I don’t drink like most of society, and yet alcohol is still readily publicised and promoted - even on sports fields, and it causes much more devastation and death than smoking.

You quoted figures on how many smokers die each year. (BTW I thought that would be pleasing for you since that’s a lot less smokers in the world).

How are those figures collected?

I hate seeing statistics quoted in articles without any mention of where and how they were obtained.

Do you think everyone will just believe

you when you quote figures? That’s what politicians do.

When deaths are recorded - whether car accident, falling off a cliff or whatever, are statistics about them are recorded ie. did they smoke, and subsequently recorded as another smoker dying.

When my father died at age 90, I had to fill out a form and it asked whether he smoked and whether that contributed to his death.

What a joke! He was 90, and according to his doctor, fitter and healthier than most people half his age. (My dad was perfectly healthy and active but died from a sudden stroke - not uncommon after 90 years of life).

Yes he did smoke, and had done so since age 14, but had never been in hospital all his life. My father’s death would be recorded as ‘another smoker dies’.

I am venting, I know, but hope you at least read my thoughts.

Certainly Hospital Bed numbers would reduce and a much healthier country of people would result in a smoking ban over time.

Mind you if we reduced the deaths from smoking, drinking, driving, medical misadventure (about 1500 per annum), drowning etc our countries population would increase considerably, which may not be in the governments interest, which explains their lack of effort to resolve these issues.

Ban smoking in public Hi Brian, I agree 100% with your article. How about “The Sun”, running a public opinion poll, or survey, on smoking in public places. The outcome might spur the Council into action re the total banning of smoking in public places. Restaurants along the Strand are disgusting because the public majority, who are non smokers, have to walk through all the smoke just to get inside. Keep up the good work.

Discrimination!

I wish to bring to your notice how single persons/ pensioners/unemployed are being disadvantaged when grocery shopping at supermarkets.

The current marketing ploy of making the majority of specials multibuys usually results in those who can least afford it paying full price. A single person does not want four tins of baked beans for $5 or even two tubs of margarine for $5.50 but pays full price for a single item.

I have made my thoughts known to both Pak n Save and Countdown. I wish more of those affected by this ploy would stop moaning to each other and get into the managers. This discrimination should not be allowed to continue.

Shooting self in foot Good old Labour - shooting itself in the foot yet again and again letting floundering vulnerable National off its hook. With another controversial loony-left private member’s bill. Marilyn Street needs to know that as with abortion, her so called”stringent safeguards” for legalised euthanasia just will not work. Holland clearly shows this to be the case.

It is naive for pro-euthanasia supporters to bleat on that if you don’t want assisted life termination you won’t get it - it is your choice. Not so, because unfortunately the right to die rapidly becomes the duty to die and this is the whole crux of the debate.

My right to live when I am old and frail is of far greater importance to me personally and to all New Zealanders generally than the half-baked conviction of some robust healthy idealist person who opinionatedly thinks safeguards will work. They did not for abortion and it is wilful ignorance and blind obstinacy not to look at the evidence and history of legalised euthanasia in Holland and our own 18 000 abortions per year.

I wish to continue to have the choice of a natural death,and hopefully with palliative care if needs be.

It is ironic and instructive that a colleague of mine,Cam Campion,a former National Party MP for Wanganui and avid pro-euthanasia campaigner,when dying of cancer chose instead palliative care in a hospice.

Visit Katikati museum Having recently been helping out at the Katikati Heritage Museum I am amazed at the content and setup at this unique facility. Despite being comparatively small there is a very impressive local historical section and a wealth of articles from a past era which fascinates young people and fills older ones with a sense of nostalgia. Given the concern of some local folks at council committing to some financial guarantees I am also surprised at the number of locals who ask “What is out there anyway?” One way to ensure the success of this venture is to visit and enjoy this impressive place that is after all right on your doorstep.

Taupo increased recycling from roughly 35% of residential homes to 95% when they transparently introduced recycle bins on rate collection.

This was one increase to rates that financially assisted residents. Surprised?

of 5 April 2012. I phoned City Hall and asked for confirmation of the cost of the mobile library service. The first paper shuffler did not know and neither did the second staff member who referred me to a man who said he did not know as it (mobile library) was complicated and tied up with other costs but thought to be between $80-$90,000.

The Council 10 Year Plan for 2012 was received by me the next day’s mail quoted $250,000 as the cost of the mobile library.

The “over-worked, under-paid and under-staffed” at City Hall did not know what was in their own Civic Plan.

The TCC and administration is a big costly joke.

Why isn’t city collecting 3-7 plastic? has just had their first year recycling plastics 3-7 and it is an unmitigated success. Firstly residents are saving money.

And secondly, even with Dunedin’s extra haulage costs (glass to Auckland, getting baled plastics to a port) the Council broke even, and even made a bit of money.

Tauranga City Council has a policy of attempting to reduce waste by 20kg per head per year. Similar to other councils, you might say. But remember these other councils have already got 95% of homes with a recycle bin, AND they are also picking up plastics BEFORE they commit to reducing by 20kg a year. Tauranga and Western Bay are in the dark ages and residents are spending more money on rubbish than they should.

Airport versus gallery Telling part of the story rather than the whole story is a favoured ploy of politicians and our own local councillor Bill Faulkner is no exception to the rule.

His weekly epistle of 27 April extolled the business acumen of our local airport committee applauding a surplus of $1.1million to end of March. What he did not say is that their annual operating revenue of circa $4.3million includes in excess of $2.5million from industrial property leases without which the airports aeronautical business would run at a deficit of over $1million. The airport is in effect one of the most heavily subsidised activities of Council.

Cr Faulkner responds: The relevant comment in my column read “this operation is non ratepayer funded and is supported by a user pays airport and leases off surrounding land.” Perhaps the user pays part has touched a raw nerve for Mr Horsley in his capacity as Chairman of the Art Gallery? The point Mr Horsley misses is that the airport is non-ratepayer funded, unlike the Art Gallery.

Messing with trees Dr Lopert’s letter of 20 April highlights the concerns of many people regarding genetically engineered trees.

The concerns have been raised many times by many people, not least Physicians and Scientists for Global Responsibility in letters to government and to councils (on www.psgr.org.nz). What these unproven experiments may or may not eventually bring in terms of financial return could so easily be superseded by the cost of irreversible damage to our unique environment.

And in the here and now, our Clean Green image is worth far more to our export customers.

Making the tough decisions

Parking infringements On Sunday April 15 on Papamoa Beach road just past Pacific Ave on the Beach side I saw an empty logging truck with its trailer on its back parked on the grass berm.

As I came up to it I noticed a city council parking warden in a city council car pull up and park on the grass berm in front of the truck, the driver got out of his car and walking towards the truck, took a photo of the vehicle, he then walked to the back of the truck then came back pulled out a slip of paper from hand held computer and placed it on the window of the truck.

As the council employee went back towards his car I took a photo of the council car and the driver. The point that I would like to make is this.

The truck driver took in my opinion the safe option by parking his vehicle on the grass berm rather than on the road which could have been a danger to vehicles passing. If what he did was against council bylaws then the council employee who also parked on the grass berm in front of the truck was is my opinion just as guilty of the same offence and I am sure a sharp lawyer would confirm this if the ticket is challenged in court.

Is Tauranga City Council employing staff to drive around on Sundays to collect revenue from hard working citizens or is it contracting out this role on an incentive based contract, whatever it is in my opinion you cannot legally park up on a street berm to issue a ticket when you have committed the same offence yourself. Or can you!

Assuming the complainant means Pacific View Road - On Saturday 14 April there was a complaint of truck (no trailer) parked right across the footpath on Papamoa Beach Road.

The Officer parked legally in front of the truck i.e. on the berm, not over the footpath and a ticket was issued.

There are no incentive based contracts for parking enforcement.

Grass cutting and edging would be cut by 30% minimum. The ratepayers are happy to look after their own verges etc and although it’s nice to have, we don’t need it.

Not so more people and more cost. In the case of Tauranga this council has no idea of what tough times are and no idea of how to run a business.

I’m telling the people of Tauranga we need to take control. Sit back and do nothing and watch your rates rise every year by at least 10% plus gst.

The government and some councils are making the hard decisions but not Tauranga, this is just a start. Lots of other things need addressing like swimming pools, Mount hot pools, the stadium, etc.

We Have a Pope Dir: Nanni Moretti : Starring: Michel Piccoli, Nanni Moretti, Jerzy Stuhr Unlike TV’s The Borgias, in which the election of a new Pope inspired bribery, blackmail and murder, Nanni Moretti’s film is a much friendlier affair, poking gentle fun at the excessive formality and eccentric process.

The election itself is a smooth process: the problem for the cardinals emerges when the newly-elected pontiff is due to address the faithful from the St Peter’s balcony and instead suffers a massive panic attack. Frantic excuses are made – “the Pope is praying for guidance” – and, as the public await news, a top psychoanalyst is called.

This, as you would imagine, causes some difficulties. For a start, the cardinals insist on ground

rules – “the concepts of soul and subconscious cannot possibly coexist” – for the eminent shrink, who also happens to be an atheist. Meanwhile, the Pope-to-be goes walkabout…

Veteran Piccoli plays the potential pontiff and Moretti himself the analyst, but it is the slew of weathered character-filled old Italian faces of the cardinals that the camera loves most. It’s a handsome production, if somewhat leisurely, revelling in the pageantry. While occasionally slipping into whimsy, it is infused with a sly wit that does nothing to diffuse its basic humanity or the central issues of faith and doubt. In Italian with English subtitles.

Too many childhood secrets in fact, since continual cross-cutting between 1986 and 2002 robs the modern story of momentum. It looks good, and having

Al Pacino and Katie Holmes on support duty certainly helps, but in the end the story drags too much without any real emotional involvement.

Chance to meet alpacas

Sunday May 6 is National Alpaca Day – a day set aside each year when alpaca farmers from throughout New Zealand open their farms to the public.

“It is a day to celebrate all things alpaca and to share the joy of owning them and working with their luxurious fibre,” says Hermione Richards of the Alpaca Association of New Zealand.

Richard and Rosemary Newson of Sonric Suri Alpacas in Apata, and Philippa and Neil Adamson of Rimu Creek Alpacas in Oropi, are co-ordinating the preparation work for farms opening up to the public in the Bay of Plenty.

“There are a good number of alpaca owners in the Bay who are opening their properties to the public to come and visit – all of them free of charge,” says Rosemary.

“There are also a variety of activities happening on these farms, from discussions and workshops to interaction with the alpacas. Most people have cute baby alpacas running around at this time and a variety of product and animals for sale – just in time for Mothers’ Day the following weekend.”

Philippa says she specialises in the Huacaya breed of alpacas - “the ones where the fleece looks like merino wool”, and has them in a wide variety of natural colours from white, fawn, brown, right through to black.

“At Sonric we specialise in white Suri alpaca, where the fleece hangs down in a mop-like manner, feeling and performing more like silk, and being warmer than wool, it’s absolutely luxurious,” says Richard.

Strikes at Affco’s Rangiuru plant are continuing after mediation talks on Monday and Tuesday failed.

Strike action has been going on for more than two months and Affco and the Meat Workers Union agreed to meet last week in an attempt negotiate a new contract. Affco wants the strikes to stop if the workers return to work, but the Union says the current working timetable isn’t suitable for its members.

Tauranga overstayers deported

A group of seven overstayers are being deported from New Zealand after failing to be given leave to remain in the country when they appeared in Tauranga District Court this week.

Judge Robert Wolff ordered the seven Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese and Tongan to return to their homelands on flights on Wednesday and today when they appeared in court.

Deportees include Sarawak resident Dian Shin Koh, who has been living in New Zealand since 2008.

He was ordered to return to Kuala Lumpur and was refused any change to flight details.

“Regrettably I cannot do anything about that,” says Judge Wolff.

Prayer for the sick... and anything else On January 29 many of churches in Tauranga joined together for a Prayer and Healing Fest at Memorial Park.

Can human beings fix human beings’ problems?

Today we hope our global leaders can solve our global problems, for there are many.

The world has become like a global village, and that has brought an inherent responsibility to help one another!

But can we make our world better by ourselves?

Lord of the Flies is a novel by Nobel Prize-winning author William Golding about a group of British boys marooned on a deserted island who try to govern themselves, with disastrous results. It really digs at the question – is human nature good? In the last hundred years we’ve seen a hundred million people murdered under Communism – and pretty much without apology. Their worldview saw many of these deaths as acceptable losses – and if humans really are just advanced animals, what’s wrong

with getting rid of a few ‘black sheep’ anyway?

Hopefully you disagree! But it serves as a warning. Without belief in God there is no basis for a fixed moral framework, for our definition of morality comes down to a personal or community decision. And there is no ‘fear factor’ to inhibit wrong either! The Bible warns (as is illustrated in Lord of the Flies) that, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure” (Jeremiah 17:9). Many thus suggest that belief in a God is necessary for human wellbeing, for what else can stop a leader doing something for personal gain when no-one is looking? What else can stop hooded young people looting shops in London? What else can stop humans being ‘human’?

This is why many believe faith in God makes us more ‘human’ (meaning selfless as opposed to selfish) as it somehow

Aotearoa - nation of promise Have you ever searched for a rainbow to find that pot of gold?

As a small child there was always great excitement to see a rainbow in the sky. Beautiful colours, flowing gracefully and powerfully into each other. As children we were told that at the end of the rainbow was a pot of gold. There was always the hope that one day we would be able to follow the rainbow and find the pot of gold. Riches and success were to be just around the corner.

As one grew in understanding you realised that the pot of gold story was just that, a story! However, the rainbow is still a sign and promise to us from God the Father, that never again would the earth be flooded as in the days of Noah. It is a sign that His love is still there for us and His promises are for evermore.

Many are still searching for the childhood dream of a ‘pot of gold’ and remaining disappointed. The true gold is found in the vein of God, deep within His heart. It is a vein of true love that has an ancient call to come

to Him for promises as a nation to be fulfilled.

In Matthew 23 v 37 Jesus Christ when speaking to the crowds and His disciples said: ‘how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate’.

As a nation we are seeking answers and solutions for the future but still looking for the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. A short-term solution does not always release the fullness of promise for the future. Sugar-coated gifts do not remain sweet forever.

There is always a process to get to the promise with a dropping off of old garments like wrong mind sets, relationships and compromise. The Father’s heart is full of promise just waiting to be released if only Aotearoa would come to Him and allow Him to gather us all under His wings. As a nation, if we would look to God the Heavenly Father, we will find the security, comfort and riches of promises He longs for us to have.
