Symbiotic relationships with the animal kingdom Animals have for centuries been used by the human race to assist society’s less able members.

Such as guide dogs for the blind, horses to pull carts and ploughs, canaries in mineshafts to warn of gas leaks, mobility dogs to help the physically disabled, and cats to… well, we are not sure yet if they do anything useful … oh that’s right, catch vermin.

The latest alliance between the human and animal kingdom, which we can publically announce here at RR for the first time, is the Politicians’ Guide Ferret.

The ferrets are especially trained to keep those elected to public office from straying from the task.

They also have an excellent fashion sense, which is why our local MP Tony Ryall is always so impeccably attired. He has been using a Fashion Ferret for decades.

Gerry Brownlee has tried it, but as his choice of suits illustrates, the ferrets have failed to deliver for Gerry.

Mainly because Gerry keeps sitting on them in the back of the Diplomatic limo.

Other guide animals are also making an appearance in political circles.

Blind eels have been employed by the Maori party in an attempt to see the other side of the debate.

Ostriches are often used by policy makers, intent on keeping their heads in the sand on matters of national importance.

The Labour Party has long been seeking guidance from Mallard.

Guide goats are commonplace in the halls of political power.

They help our MPs maintain a stubborn attitude, make mountains out of mole hills and when they are proven wrong, eat their hats.

Treasury tried to utilise squirrels in an effort to save the country’s money. They figured that the squirrels’ saving ethics might have application in getting the country out of debt. You won’t have heard about this project, it was the secret squirrel. Turns out, the idea was just nuts.

The Lesbian Party has just been quietly beavering away.

The Green Party secretly enlisted mice to guide them. Unfortunately, the rodents turned out to be the three blind mice. They were also missing tails and despite a lengthy investigation, the farmer’s wife was never charged – but witnesses report her being in possession of the carving knife.

Peter Dunne has enlisted the help of a llama to assist with his hair styling. Ironically, it was found that the llama was also making better political decisions so now stands in as a body double for MP Dunne on regular occasions, unbeknownst to the general public.

Further afield, NASA has, after revelations it faked the moon landings, secretly interviewed the cow. Rocket scientists are keen to unlock the secret of how the cow jumped over the moon and aim to replicate its feat so astronauts can REALLY land on the lunar surface.

The little dog laughed to see so much fun and NASA launched an immediate investigation into the disappearance of the spoon, suspecting alien abduction, but it transpired that the dish had run away with it.

In keeping with the animal theme: Spay a Stray success The friendly folk at ARRC Wildlife centre are celebrating after a successful month in April which saw 40 stray cats and kittens rehomed.

As part of the centre’s Spay the Stray Cat Campaign, another 38 strays were removed from around Tauranga.

Director Liza Schneider says they have contained seven colonies, helped 196 stray cats, rehomed 93 cats and desexed 140 since the campaign’s beginning.

“Thank you all for your great support,”

she says. “We still have 78 needing homes and there are still at least 370 stray cats out there.”

Speaking of cats needing homes…

This handsome cat Tinker was brought into ARRC by a resident who had been feeding it for a year after its owners moved and left him behind – a common scenario.

It was thought Tinker was a girl, called Tinkerbell, but a vet check revealed that she was a he. Tinkerbell was renamed Tinkerballs, after de-sexing named Tinkerballess and

is now Tinker. Tinker is a real character and one of a handful of lovely adult cats still looking for a good home. ARRC has a special running for the next week of a minimum donation of $20 to adopt an adorable adult cat.

Evicted

Upset over Cargo Shed Pauline Garratt says there has been no consultation from the Cargo Shed’s management board.

Stallholders at the waterfront’s Cargo Shed are being asked to vacate the premises as the management board looks to take the shed in a new direction.

Last month stallholders at the arts market, managed

by Creative Tauranga, received letters of notice informing them they must vacate the premises by May 31.

All of the current stallholders have been given term of contract letters, except the Flux Coffee and carver Whare Heke, which have been asked to stay.

Pauline Garratt, who is involved in the knitters and weavers stall at the market, says stallholders were given a month’s notice, but were not consulted or provided with any reason.

“There was no consultation. No one has been to see us down there.”

Stallholders received the letters on April 17 and many have no idea where they will move to.

The knitters and weavers group has been operating from the shed for the past eight or nine years.

“There is a real sense of community in the shed. We help each other out – everything is locally made.

“We have no idea where we are going to go if we have to leave. We just don’t understand.”

Creative Tauranga CEO Tracey Rudduck-Gudsell

says the management board is looking at a new platform for the shed, and as the current stall holders’ contracts expired on March 31.

“The board is looking at a new model for the shed moving forward. Their contracts had expired anyway, and as we go into winter, we need to get it ready for next summer.”

Tracey says the board has been in contact with a stallholder representative who was asked to submit feedback as part of the new model negotiations.

“Unfortunately that was not received by the due date,” says Tracey.

A representative for the Cargo Shed stallholders says there was no due date for the submission, and they were waiting on updated audited accounts from Creative Tauranga, which they say they never received, before delivering a proposal. Stallholders say many worked after-hours and through repairs at the shed and received no support from Creative Tauranga.

Tracey cannot elaborate on the new model for the shed, but says it will aim to represent the “wider arts community”.

“We are still in the development stages. Stall holders will be contacted again once a new model is in place, there will be an opportunity for them to return, but whether that suits them or not, is up to them.”

Man injured in Otumoetai crash

A Tauranga man suffered serious leg injuries after being trapped in his van following a crash on Otumoetai Road on Wednesday.

Emergency services were called to a crash between a van and a Nissan Mistral near the intersection of Wayne Place at about 2.30pm.

The road was cordoned off from the Brookfield roundabout and at the Waihi Road intersection with Otumoetai Road while emergency services helped free the 41-year-old man trapped in the driver’s side of the van.

Police said at the time it appeared the van crashed into the back of a Nissan indicating into Wayne Place.

New Tauranga abortion service

Pro-life advocates are condemning a new abortion service in Tauranga introduced to meet the growing demand for the service in the city.

Tauranga Family Planning Clinic has been granted a new licence to conduct early medical abortions up to nine weeks of pregnancy by the Abortion Supervisory Committee.

Family Planning chief executive Jackie Edmond says until now pregnant women seeking to the service had to travel to Thames and Hamilton.

The free service is funded by the Bay of Plenty District Health Board and will be available to women at the clinic’s 10th Avenue premises.

Dune fire leaves $20k bill

Tauranga City Council is facing a $20,000 planting bill after Wednesday night’s suspicious fire in the Papamoa dunes.

Fire broke out in a section of the dunes on Papamoa Beach Road opposite Parton Road about 5pm.

Firefighters from Papamoa and Mount Maunganui were called to the 10metre by 20metre fire that witnesses say spread quickly spread along the beachfront towards Mount Maunganui.

Suspicious fire in Papamoa home

Police are investigating a suspected arson after a fire broke out in an empty house in Papamoa early on Thursday.

An elderly neighbour of the Gloucester Road house called the fire service when she heard a smoke alarm around 7am.

Mount Maunganui firefighters attended the fire and searched the house, but no one was found inside. It is understood the house is a rental property and the residents, a family, are away.

A police winter campaign has helped an 88 per cent reduction in crashes on State Highway 29 since its inception in 2010.

The Western Bay of Plenty Police Winter Action Campaign was introduced in response to the 43 crashes recorded by police in 2009.

In runs from April to August – a five month period. Sergeant Mike Owen says the number of crashes has continued to decrease each year with 25 recorded in 2012.

“Traditionally, our focus has been on the Kaimais, State Highway 29, as this has been identified as a road at higher risk in the winter months.”

The Winter Action Campaign involves a number of agencies including Western Bay of Plenty Road Policing Unit, ACC, NZTA, Western Bay of Plenty Council and Tauranga City Council.

Police patrols and education is one of the key initiatives involved in the campaign.

“We drop leaflets off at schools so children can take them home and remind their parents.

“We also drop leaflets off at the Port of Tauranga, as most of their trucks use SH29.”

Mike asks people to reduce their speed and drive to the road conditions so he doesn’t have to attend a serious or potentially fatal car crash.

Home burglaries focus for Bay

Car smashes through bank

Three bank staff and an elderly driver escaped without serious injuries after a car crashed through the glass frontage of Katikati’s Westpac bank.

An elderly member of the public, who was forced to jump out of the way as the Toyota hatchback veered over the curb on Main Road just after 11.30am, was also relatively unharmed suffering scratches on her hands from broken glass.

The car, driven by a woman in her late 70s, went over the curb through the shop’s front window coming to stop at the back of the bank.

It was a pivotal moment in WWII, but 70 years on from the game-changing Dambuster raids, Tauranga pilot Les Munro is back in the headlines again.

Earlier this week he was interviewed for a BBC documentary on the raids and is expecting a lot more attention when he arrives in England next week for the 70th anniversary commemorations.

Les, CNZM, DSO, QSO and DFC, is the last remaining pilot from the mission to attack hydroelectric dams in the Ruhr valley that were helping power the German industrial machine.

He is looking forward to catching up with the few other remaining crew members – including British bomb aimer Johnnie Johnson and Canadian

rear gunner Fred Sutherland.

At 94, Les continues to downplay his involvement in the operation – which he had to abandon early after flak damage put the intercom system out of action, rendering him unable to communicate with his crew which was vital in the run-up to the Sorpe Dam which was his target to bomb. Of the 19 Lancasters that left on the mission only 11 returned.

He is particularly looking forward to seeing his beloved Lancasters in action again when they fly into RAF Scampton, where the Dams squad had trained and operated from. Les and his wife Christine are travelling to the commemorations this month with the support of his family who will accompany them on what he says will definitely be his last trip.

A rise in the number of burglaries committed in the Western Bay of Plenty has police focusing on preventing dwelling burglaries in the area.

Overall, crime in the Western Bay of Plenty has dropped by 10.8 per cent – the second biggest decrease in the region.

The official crime statistics for the 2012 calendar year were released earlier this month and show a drop from 13,136 offences in 2011 to 11,721 in 2012 in the Western Bay of Plenty.

Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton says there was a slight rise in burglaries, 1.6 per cent, an increase of 26 offences.

“What we are noticing currently is a significant number of opportunist-type burglaries where small electronic items, cash and other easily moveable goods are taken from insecure premises.

“We strongly urge our communities to store valuable goods out of sight and to ensure doors and windows are left locked and secure.”

He says if people are away for any length of time, they should make sure mail and papers are being cleared, the house is secure and there is someone keeping an eye on their home while they are away.

“People should call police if they see people acting suspiciously around a home or are knocking on doors appearing to be out of place.”

Competitors head off in last year’s inaugural BOP Coast ‘n’ Country Cycle Challenge.

Pedal power will be in full force along the east coast in the second running of the BOP Coast ‘n’ Country Cycle Challenge this Sunday.

After being labelled a success in its inaugural race last year, competitor entries have been flying in ahead of the start, says organiser Steve Hall.

“We probably have about 300 at the moment. Last year we had under 300 and we are probably tracking at close to double to what we had last year.”

With the choice of either a 100 kilometre slog from Mount Maunganui to Whakatane or 50 kilometre from Pukehina Primary School, competitors are excited the ride is set to become an annual

fixture, alternating directions each year.

The race takes on a scenic route from Mount Maunganui to Whakatane encompassing Te Puke and Paengaroa before tackling the winding terrain of Old Coach Rd to Pukehina Primary School.

Riders then cycle back along the coast on State Highway 2 passing the pristine sandy beach line to Matata and on to Whakatane before emptying the tank in a sprint finish outside Morpeth Park.

“We have a huge range of age groups and I think I have spotted an 88-year-old in the entries,” says Steve.

Cycling enthusiasts from Taupo, Hamilton and Auckland will be racing, along with a strong contingent from Tauranga Boys’

College out to wrest the Secondary Schools 50km Challenge off title-holders Trident High School.

With a mainly flat terrain, and the odd hill thrown in, most cyclists are entering the 100 kilometre race while a third group will line up for the 50 kilometre stroll.

“It’s a fun ride, but everyone’s out to do their personal bests and the top riders are out for glory.

“For your typical 100 kilometre rides this is one of the easier ones.”

A portion of the race entry fee is being donated to the Eastern Bay of Plenty Life Education Trust and Waipuna Hospice.

The 100 kilometre race starts 9.15am from Mount Maunganui College and the 50 kilometre from Pukehina School at 10am.

Book bonanza?

Cool bananas!

Thousands of books will be up for grabs at the Wesley Methodist Church next Friday at the Cool Bananas Book Bonanza.

Cool Bananas, an organisation which has programmes to foster values that build a positive culture at home and at school, reaches 4500 primary-age pupils in 19 schools weekly. It is looking for donations of books, DVDs, CDs and appropriate magazines to sell. Items can be dropped off at 16 Millers Rd, Brookfield.

Organiser Garth Collins says the books can include both fiction and non-fiction and $5 shopping bags of books will be available.

Last year’s sale raised $1500, a sum Garth hopes to match this year to help fund its value-focused training programme.

“All money raised goes back into the programmes.

We need every dollar that we can get to offer the programme.”

Home turf surf From front cover

Fresh from his first national win Mount Maunganui surfer Mackenzie Christie is hoping for a second title this weekend when a new, nationally sanctioned, Under 20 surfing event arrives in town.

The Aerial7 Backdoor Pro Junior is happening at Mount Maunganui on May 4 or 5 – whatever day produces the best surf.

Mackenzie, 17, surfed his way to winning the premier Under 18 Boys Division of the Backdoor GromBash last month and hopes his local surf knowledge will aid him in succeeding this weekend.

“It’s my home break just down the road from where I live, it looks like there should be a few waves coming hopefully.

“It is so good to have an event like this at home. It gives local surfers a bit of an advantage and I feel I have been surfing good recently.

“I’ve been doing comps since I was 11 or 12, and I finally won one, so yeah it was amazing.”

The Tauranga Boys’ College student is ranked fourth for the competition, behind fellow Under 20 competitors Dune Kennings from Whangamata, and Tane Wallis and Elliot Paerata Reid from Piha.

“Anyone could win,” says Mackenzie. “There are a lot of good guys.”

Despite not being able to surf all

week due to flat seas, Mackenzie got some training in during a week-long trip to the Gold Coast with school surfers.

“We’ve just been over in Aussie for a week, we did a coaching thing last week. We didn’t get that good waves, but the coaching was really helpful.”

The Aerial7 Backdoor Pro Junior is the third nationally sanctioned Pro Junior event in 2013. The first event was the Rip Curl Pro held at Raglan followed by the South Island Championships held at Dunedin. An Under 20 Girls Division will join the event – an age category generally not contested by females in New Zealand.

Mackenzie will use the event as a practise run for the World Junior Championships in June.

Homes’ fate to be decided The hearing deciding the fate of eight Hammond St homes in the pathway of the Welcome Bay underpass was held this week.

The Hammond St homes and the Welcome Bay Scout Hall are subject to the Notice of Requirement filed with the Tauranga City Council by the NZ Transport Agency.

Acquiring the land for the Welcome Bay underpass is the next step in the process before the detailed design work can take place and construction can start.

The houses will be buried under the embankment that will bring the road down the hill from the underpass to the new intersection and new bridge that crosses the Kaitemako Stream, and continues across the site now occupied by the scout hall.

The city council planner has recommended approval of the notice of requirement.

Independent Hearings Commissioner Greg Hill has reserved his decision for 15 working days.

There are four submissions opposing the underpass. Des Heke, Kaitiaki Tangata Whenua opposes the mixing of stormwater from the proposed collecting pond into the stream, and siting the pond location is wrong in view of the urupa.

He wants the pond relocated outside of the natural waterway surrounding the urupa.

Angela and Grant Miller from Langstone St are challenging the whole reasoning for the underpass, saying the population is not large enough to warrant it and there are no traffic issues even during peak periods.

Christine Dean at 28 Hammond St protests the loss of the neighbourhood, the affect it will have on her property value and that there is inadequate visual and landscape management.

Eris Hussey at Awanui Place says the road could instead follow the coastal reserve and rejoin Welcome Bay Road near the dairy.

It would require taking of only one council-owned property.

Katikati theatre win prompts need for home Katikati Theatre members hope being named supreme winner at the 2013 TrustPower Western Bay of Plenty Community Awards is a stimulus for finding a building for their productions and rehearsals.

Katikati Theatre chairperson and director Julie Thomas is hopeful the win on Monday night can give her group more credibility with the Western Bay council in finding a suitable long-term base.

“I think it will aid us in our quest to get a theatre – all we do is made complicated by not having a building, we move around all over the place and this may help us carry a bit more weight with the council.”

The group’s current store room is full and Julie stores the costumes in her office.

The supreme award recognises the group’s

enthusiastic volunteers and keen performers and their efforts in creating and offering live performances to Katikati. Three years ago this type of entertainment didn’t existed, says Julie.

After donating hundreds of voluntary hours Jessica Earle is giving back to a community organisation after being recognised for her own selfless efforts.

The Year 13 Te Puke High School student won the 2013 TrustPower Western Bay of Plenty Youth Community Spirit Award on Monday night and instantly handed over $250 to Tauranga Search and Rescue.

Jessica received a framed certificate and her own $250 of prize money after choosing which community group is receiving the initial bounty. Tauranga Youth Search and Rescue trains at Otumoetai College once a month but keeps its young members physically, emotionally and mentally challenged with other events and camps.

Jessica was given the award for being involved in the group but also for her efforts at school.

During the last 18 months, Jessica has been participating in her school’s CACTUS Program, a boot-camp style program aimed at improving student’s leadership.

“From this, Jessica’s confidence has lifted hugely and she is taking on leadership roles within the school, mentoring and encouraging other students,” says Trustpower community relations representative Teresa Partridge.

Jessica is part of Peer Support, is a Sports Committee member and Hillary House co-captain. “I just really like seeing the looks on people’s faces when they achieve what they want to achieve,” says Jessica.

Next year she’s to join the police get involved in search and rescue work with police dogs.

Combine friends, fashion, modelling and music – and it’s paradise – for the Tauranga Girls’ College students taking part in the school’s annual Fashion Parade this month.

The girls were busy rehearsing choreography and testing the runway this week as final preparations for the May 15-16 show get underway.

Running for about 25 years, the fashion show is the college PTA’s major fundraiser and sees 104 students from both Tauranga Boys’ and Girls’ colleges take part – as well as a team of music and lighting students and 70 volunteer parents.

Show director Pauline Happe says the students will

model clothing from 14 stores this year, including Nevada, Betty Monroe, Espirit, Evolution, Supre and Thanks.

An all-boys group, modelling clothing from Frank Casey, will close the show to an audience of 500.

“That’s kind of the highlight,” says Pauline.

Production began in February, with students eager to take part in the well-known event.

“It’s a huge undertaking, but the girls love it, especially the Year 13 students. Like the ball, the fashion parade is another thing they all love.”

Last year’s parade raised about $6000. The year’s show is on May 15 and 16, starting 7pm at Tauranga Girls' College hall.

Caution urged at letterboxes Letterbox vigilance is being urged for Tauranga’s elderly residents as a number of scam letters offering money circulate the community.

The letters, claiming recipients are entitled to substantial amounts of money from overseas countries, have been arriving in residents’ letterboxes lately.

One elderly resident, who only wished to be named as Betty, says she received a letter in the mail last week claiming her husband has received US$651,000.

It was not until she read the fine print on the back of the letter she discovered it asked for bank account details for payment, along with other “alarming” requirements.

“In the small print at the foot of the letter they say ‘for security reasons we ask that you keep this away from the public’.

“I just feel that people should be warned as there will be vulnerable people who will give all their details.”

Tauranga Age Concern board chairperson Angela Scott says this is a serious issue that was raised at the Age Concern conference in Wellington last week.

At the conference, Bank of New Zealand financial elder abuse prevention specialist Bronwyn Groot highlighted the dangers of scam letters and payments, claiming people are acting too quickly on the details.

Research shows New Zealanders lose more than $400million a year to scams. Elderly are particularly vulnerable to scams, fraud and theft.

“It was just horrific to see how some people have become addicted to them and keep giving money and writing out cheques.”

Tauranga’s elderly are being warned about scam letters claiming recipients are entitled to a large sum of money.

Angela says it is “extraordinary” how vulnerable older people are as they do not think about the dangers associated with handing out personal details to an unknown source.

Work to enhance the Gate Pa Reserve is among projects announced to commemorate next year’s 150 year anniversary of the Battle of Gate Pa. A programme of events and projects to commemorate the anniversary was announced on Monday on the 149th anniversary, in what project coordinator Buddy Mikaere hopes will mark a new beginning for race relations in the region.

Buddy is enthusiastic about the commemorations, saying he was pleased with the strong interest at the launch and hopes it will mark a new period in relations between iwi and Pakeha now that historic grievances are being

addressed through Waitangi settlements.

“My view is that this commemoration offers our community an opportunity to move forward in a way which we have never had before.

“If the events of 1864 and what followed represented a nadir for Maori-Pakeha relations in Tauranga then next year, 150 years on, marks an important milestone on the journey to completing and achieving a just reconciliation.”

Work to enhance the Gate Pa reserve will include extending the pathway in the reserve, establishing a marae atea (wooden decked courtyard area) for gatherings, shifting the

existing gateway and erecting pou on both sides of Cameron Rd. Along with work on the Gate Pa Reserve, commemoration organiser Pukehinahina Trust is planning a major project to reshape the Te Ranga battle site from its current state as a paddock to an attractive historic reserve, but Buddy expects this will have to be a multi-stage project because of the cost.

Both reserve projects have been priced at a total of $495,783 – with another $150,800 budgeted for events to commemorate the battle. Most commemoration events will be held from March 2014.

Letter to the editor: 28 years of Bill Faulkner His weekly column on April 26 outlines his “conspiracy theory” about possible privatisation of water supply

and wastewater, which he bases on the report of the local government infrastructure Expert Advisory Group, of which I was a member.

The facts:

The report noted that water is poorly managed by many local authorities but with a few notable exceptions, Tauranga City Council being one.

In fact, my colleagues on the EAG were sick of me pointing out how well TCC had managed infrastructure over the last two decades.

The EAG noted that despite legislative pressure, progress in upgrading water and wastewater facilities has been slow in many areas. The latest Ministry of Health review of drinking water quality shows compliance with drinking water standards, to be well below acceptable levels for many small, minor and medium sized networks.

Many public water supplies are still subject to “boil water” requirements. It was clear that insufficient work is being done by many local authorities because they lack the scale to carry out infrastructure projects in an economical and affordable manner.

The EAG’s report noted that there were considerable benefits to be achieved from economies of scale and scope. Notwithstanding, the EAG did not propose privatisation even though it was under pressure from some vested interest groups to do so.

A recommendation

The EAG’s recommendation on the future ownership and management structure was: “Councils should consider moving delivery of portable water and wastewater to regional level, with the management and implementation of such delivery at arm’s length from political decisions, through either a jointly-owned or regional council-owned Council Controlled Organisation, or a business unit run on economically efficient lines.”

Bogey time

In relation to Bill’s bogey about Auckland’s CCO, Watercare Services, the EAG’s report said: “When the Government agreed that Watercare Services Limited would provide integrated water and wastewater services in Auckland it considered this issue and concluded that the risks associated with Watercare’s potential abuse of its monopoly position were limited by the CCO governance framework and wider safeguards; and that the CCO framework and wider safeguards provided by the Office of the Auditor-General and the Commerce Act 1986 would provide an appropriate regulatory framework for Watercare.

There is also a requirement that the Controller and Auditor General, from time to time, should review the service performance of the Auckland council and each of its council controlled organisations.”

Just for the record Bill, Mark Ford is the CEO of Watercare not the chairman. To put his salary in perspective, Watercare’s annual revenue in 2012 was $442 million and the value of infrastructural assets being managed was $7.8 billion. The chairman received $96,000 in annual fees and other directors received $53,000 each.

As for me being “gamekeeper turned poacher”, I do not serve on the board of any CCO and I had no conflicts of interest in relation to the work of the EAG. I look forward to our future “robust discussions”.

Council accounts on right track Staff have advised elected members that there will likely be another rates surplus this financial year.

At the Projects and Monitoring Committee, accounts were presented to the end of March which indicate that subject to unforeseen financial events about a $1 million surplus could be expected at financial year’s end – June 30. Sound financial management is the key to this happy news – tight treasury administration of cash flows and lower than expected interest rates. But, some of the surplus generated by this and other savings (such as $1.1 million employee costs), have been offset by other events like soaring insurance premiums.

Another “turning of the sod” ceremony took place on the waterfront this week. No, not an elected member this time – but the start of a playground adjacent to the defunct bubble jet fountain on the northern car park reclamation downtown.

The playground will come from Germany so staff told us, because it’s higher quality and better value than anything else available. By the way, the bubble jet fountain will be reinstated. Apparently, it got flooded and that’s how it was ruined. Now there’s a surprise isn’t it? A fountain getting flooded. No doubt there’s a reason but from memory it cost about $400,000 and being near water as well as pumping it you might expect it to be waterproof.

Other items from the meeting were how well Tauranga residents did with low water usage over the hot dry summer. Something below 450 litre per day per house was excellent. It used to be more than 700 litre per day pre-water meters.

I said that no doubt the media would trumpet the now proven positive effectiveness of water meters in the headlines (now that’s a Tui ad). The positive being that Tauranga was one of the few cities not to have any water use restrictions over the summer.

On another front, pun intended, plans are underway to recognise the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gate Pa. It’s a great story, laced with all the intrigue of British Colonial policy that rolled around the world in those days. A small Maori group of around 230 womped the pride of the British Army – 1700 heavily armed troops at Gate Pa on April 29, 1864. The British exacted a terrible revenge at Te Ranga a few months later and the consequences of this reverberate to this day.

idea is that it would predominantly cater to the cruise ship market. I asked if they had considered what would happen if the cruise ships stopped coming. They said they would be in trouble. Council will consider the proposal but from where I sit there are many and big hurdles to overcome, before it sees the light of day.

It seems that a contractor got it wrong and council staff acknowledged this – application of this toxic spray ceased immediately and has not been used since. This occurrence highlights that you can have all the rules in the world but you can’t overcome the “human factor”. These sprays are dangerous in my view but it’s also true that council can’t maintain the tidy state of the city without them.

Community backing for trail Passionate cyclists are banding together in the hope of resurrecting Tauranga City’s failed cycle trail.

The move to establish the group comes after the failed proposal in 2009 when the New Zealand Cycle Trail project was first established.

Since then the city has struggled to find a group willing to undertake the project and move it forward in the application process.

Initiated by Tauranga resident Jan Booysen and Tauranga City Council transportation cycling advocate Bruce Galloway, the group currently has 20 members meeting at Tauranga City Council on a fortnightly basis.

“We have got people all the way from Katikati down to Te Puke who meet fortnightly to discuss plans to move the trail forward,” says Jan. Plans are in place to establish a Bay of Plenty Trails Trust to act as an umbrella organisation for cyclists, mountain bikers and hikers alike.

Tattoo Removal now available at Fraser Clinic

A Kiwi touch to abandoned station Adding a touch of Kiwiana in the form of public art is Mount Maunganui artist Jason MacArthur’s mission in the next few weeks.

The 34-year-old graffiti artist known as JAM is working to transform the abandoned Shell Station on State Highway 2 in Papamoa into an eye catching mural he hopes will “bring something positive from the negative”. Not his first piece in the area, he has already moulded the blank canvas on the southern side of the café into a modern day Marilyn Monroe portrait.

After completing his Marilyn works Jason was approached by the landlord, who was looking for a local artist to improve the old station hammered by taggers.

The contract was confirmed two weeks ago and Jason has already begun work on the site removing old tags and priming the walls for new ink.

“There’s been a lot of clean-up to do – mostly painting over the tagging and washing it down.”

He’s not giving away too much at the moment but there is no disguising the beginnings of a Billy T James portrait on the roadside wall.

“It’s definitely going to have a bit of Kiwiana.”

Jason expects the piece

to take about two to three weeks depending on the weather, and although he knows it may not stay forever, he hopes it will bring a bit of brightness to the Bay’s roadside.

Comedy show raising money for breast cancer support Classic Flyers NZ is bringing the hilarious comedy ‘Wot to Wear and Wot Not to Wear’ to Tauranga on Thursday, May 16 to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga Trust.

The independent charitable trust supports local people diagnosed with breast cancer and relies on

community fundraising for this very valuable work.

Suzie Johnson believes that New Zealand women should feel good about themselves and she highlights this message with two hours of fun and laughter, dispensing tips on how women can highlight their assets and camouflage their not-quite assets.

A wardrobe system from Designer Homeware, an Adventure Biplane flight, and quilts are among items being auctioned or raffled during the evening.

To add to the fun of the evening, organisers are encouraging people to dress in pink outfits with a prize for the best dressed group.

Rhea was known as the mother of gods and was therefore strongly associated with Gaia and the Roman Cybele, who had similar functions. The classical Greeks saw Rhea as the mother of the Olympian gods and goddesses.

The Romans celebrated a spring festival by the name of Hilaria in honour of Cybele, from at least 250BC. Today Mothers’ Day is celebrated in more than 46 countries around the world mostly during the month of May. In some countries it is celebrated at entirely different times of the year.

Mothers’ Day has come to be recognised internationally as the day to honour all mothers and thank them for the services they impart for the benefit of their individual children and consequently to the development of mankind.

In the UK, Mother’s Day started as Mothering Sunday in the 17th Century. The children of poor families were sent to work as apprentice and domestic servants with the rich. The children were allowed to visit their ‘Mother Church’ or the Cathedral of their home town annually in the

middle of the fasting month of Lent.

They were able to meet their mothers after church and presented them with flowers and special Mothering Cakes. That custom faded with the lifestyle changes brought about by the industrial revolution.

The story of Mothers’ Day in US began in 1870 when writer Julia Ward Howe wrote a Mothers’ Day Proclamation and demanded declaration of an official holiday and celebrations on Mothers’ Day. The idea gained popularity but she could not get it implemented.

In 1905 Anna Jarvis and supporters began lobbying for an official Mothers’ Day holiday by writing letters to the people in power. Anna began to send her mother’s favourite flowers, carnations, to her local church requesting people to wear them in honour of their mothers. The idea gained popularity and in 1910, West Virginia became the first state to recognise Mothers’ Day. The second Sunday in May was designated Mother’s Day in 1914

Drought over: time to start planting Hopefully, the drought is now behind us. The recent rains have reasonably replenished the soils moisture, so we can now get back to some planting.

I am sure that many of you, like me, had come to a halt in the garden as it had got too dry to do anything.

Autumn is the best time to plant as the temperature starts to drop, or at least it should drop, we are now in May and some nights the temperature has still been in the 20 degree range. So get planting now as the growing conditions are spot on and roots will develop quickly in the warm soils.

May is also the time to plant early garlic and shallots. You can

do this any time during May, June and July and even into August for later crops, but tradition says for quality garlic, plant on the shortest day of the year and harvest on the longest. Garlic and shallots will be available in stores in a couple of weeks.

When planting garlic only plant good strong New Zealand grown corms. Don’t plant imported ones as these are mostly treated and will not grow. Split the corms up into separate cloves and plant in rows about 10 cm apart and fertilise.

In the flower garden, there is plenty to do. Clean up old bedding plants and replant with winter varieties such as pansies, violas, polyanthus, primula and ciner-

aria. These all make a very colourful garden during the winter months. Another job to do is to cut back the herbaceous plants to tidy them up for the winter. Also pick up some sweet pea seeds when you are in the garden centre as the winter is the best time to sow.

Don’t forget to put containers of tender plants in sheltered spots and keep them on the dry side during the winter as too much water can be harmful during colder weather.

If you have deciduous trees that are now loosing their leaves, rake up the leaves and put into a heap to compost during the winter.

Tauranga’s Bayride Motorcycles recently hosted a Triumph-only ride to Te Kaha and my job was to photograph the riders having fun along the way. This is my mate Steve from Tauriko on his massive Triumph Rocket on the Ohope Beach hill. It boasts a 2.3 litre three cylinder engine which pumps out 140 horsepower. Last week the Bay of Plenty Regional Council signed off a draft Regional Coastal Environment Plan for public feedback.

Mining and drilling are messy activities and routinely involve serious environmental effects such as in Waihi. Mining might take place in any back yard, including yours.

Parliament has been in recess for the last fortnight and so work has taken me all over New Zealand rather than just to Tauranga and Wellington and then back.

Our coastline makes our region special, and we’re about to ask what you want its future to look like.

Concerns about above average power price rises in Tauranga and foul smelling reforms for trades’ registrations have been attracting my attention.

I read with concern on the Sunlive website (29/04/13) that Tauranga City Council is considering helping to fund a Mauao Cultural Centre that will take advantage of the cruise ship visitors.

Huge cows at disc golf inspire black bean beef Last weekend I was staying in Taumarunui playing in a disc golf tournament – and for me it was like travelling back in time.

There are the old buildings, the slower pace of life and the value for money takeaway food.

I don’t often eat pies but the bacon and egg variety along with coffee was required before tee off.

The large three dollar pie was the best I’ve ever had – chock full of bacon and real whole egg.

During the first round of disc golf played at the polo cross grounds, I discovered that Taumarunui also had huge cows about the size of a garden

shed! There were not heaps of them like on a dairy farm, rather a few scattered about the course watching 40-odd crazy humans throw plastic at baskets. Anyway, I must have been thinking of the beef for this week’s recipe as my first round was 22 over par!

In this week’s recipe I use cabbage, beef and black bean, not the sort you get in Chinesestyle buffet, black bean paste you make yourself and a version of kim chi, the Korean pickled cabbage. I use sirloin for this marinade and then roast large cubes that are skewed rather than stir-fried. And, baking the meat fuses the black bean into the meat and forms a crust to maintain moisture.

Black bean beef skewer and red cabbage kim chi 4-6 serves

The skewers Ingredients

500g sirloin steak cut into large cubes 100g salted black beans 2-3 cloves of peeled garlic 1 Tbsp vegetable oil 2 Tbsp soya sauce 2- 3 Tbsp hot water

The kim chi

Ingredients 1 small head Chinese cabbage, chopped 1 head red cabbage, chopped Chopped green chillies ¼ cup sea salt 1 Tbsp minced garlic 1 Tbsp minced ginger 2 Tbsp fish sauce (optional) 2 Tbsp Korean red chilli powder (gochugaru) 1 ripe apple 1 ripe pear ½ white onion

Method In two separate glass or ceramic bowls, soak the two cabbages in a mixture of sea salt mixed with ½ cup of warm water for four to five hours at room temperature.

Meanwhile, prepare the black bean mixture by rinsing the salted black beans under running water and blending with the garlic.

Combine oil, soya sauce and water to make a marinade paste and place the diced beef in this mixture in a plastic bag for four to five hours.

The cabbage is ready when it has wilted considerably. Rinse under cold running water and drain.

In a large bowl, mix the cabbages and add chilli powder mixed with a little water, onion, pear and apple (blended to a pulp), chopped chillies and fish sauce (if desired).

Mix the cabbage well using gloves to avoid the chilli burn. Pack the mixture into glass jars.

Pour on any remaining juice from the bowl and leave at room temperature for 24 hours.

This starts the fermentation process up which carries on in refrigeration.

The kim chi will become sourer as it ages but has a bright and refreshing taste.

Skewer chunks of marinated beef onto pre-soaked skewers and bake in a moderate oven at 160 degree Celsius on a well-greased tray for about 15 minutes.

Serve with a small mound of kim chi.

Synthetic cannabis users ‘lab rats’ – CEO Bay of Plenty District Health Board’s CEO says people using synthetic cannabis are “experimental lab rats” as health professionals are unaware of the long-term effects of the legal high.

The closing of submissions for the government’s Psychoactive Substances Bill this week has reignited a nationwide debate about legal highs and Phil Cammish says residents are presenting with “scary and unpleasant” reactions to synthetic cannabis at Tauranga Hospital.

“We see a considerable number of people for whom these reactions are, at the bottom end of the scale unpleasant and scary, to at the top end of the scale, admissions to psychiatric units with the potential for irreversible damage to mental health and even suicide.

“No herbal high is tested for safety by the manufacturers prior to release on to the market so consumers are effectively experimental lab rats.”

He says these substances are relatively new so medical professionals are unsure of the long-term effects on the body. He warns people not to

touch the substance.

“What we are sure of is the significant damage to mental health.”

National Poisons Centre toxicologist Leo Schep says the health effects of the chemicals in synthetic drugs are particularly damaging for young people, given their brains are still developing and can spark paranoia, psychotic episodes and renal failure.

He says recent synthetic drugs seem to be more toxic, with people suffering more adverse effects than

“There is a very wide body of evidence on the benefits and safety of drinking water with fluoridation.

Red Cross appeal begins Next week is the Red Cross’ annual appeal and residents are being asked to dig deep to help the charity aid people in need, both nationally and internationally.

“These Red Cross programmes are making a daily difference in our local area. We need your support, so please give generously,” says Heather.

Charity aimed at helping men through grief In a country deemed lacking in support services aimed solely at men, a Tauranga charity is fighting to change that.

Kids Need Dadz became a registered charity in 2012, offering support to grieving men and running a men’s refuge from its base in Fraser St. Co-founder Sheila Ewart says they are there to support fathers and children who find themselves

without a roof over their head “for whatever reason”.

“We had one guy whose ex-wife moved up from Wellington with his three children. Rather than commute [from Wellington] to try see his children, he moved to Tauranga. He stayed in the house for a bit while he tried to find a place.”

She says there are very few services available for men and the main thing they see men struggle with is grief – for example, over a relationship break-

down or child separation.

This is tackled through open group sessions with the charity’s volunteers, or when needed, those needing help are referred to counsellors or other services.

“When a relationship breaks down, they have got nowhere to go to get support,” says Sheila.

“Men tend to suppress it; they don’t like talking about it. When we have an open meeting and they hear other guys have problems like them, or worse,

they don’t feel so bad and they start to open up.

“It’s really helpful.”

The service aids between 10-50 men each month and recently signed up with Volunteer Western Bay of Plenty to receive extra help.

“They are really good, we just tell them we need some extra hands and there is always someone to help. They do an awesome job in the community “That’s the best thing we ever did.”

Girl power hurtling at speed on track Fancy hanging off the side of a motorbike as it hurtles around a track at speeds of up to 200 km/h.

To the uninitiated it might sound like lunacy, but to sidecar racers this is when it starts to get really exciting.

In a motorsport dominated almost entirely by men, Tauranga sidecar racer Tracey Bryan has been diving against the traffic on her pink bike, and after almost 10 years she has no plans to slow down.

Tracey, who grew up in a sidecar racing family in Wanganui, had not been interested in sidecars when she was younger, but was instantly hooked when she was in her first race.

“Nine years ago, I had my first go as passenger on a classic bike that my dad (Roger Stent) had built and I loved it. So another girl and I got together and bought a $500 sidecar and decided to give it a go.”

Tracey, the only woman rider in New Zealand, and her passenger partner Jo Mickelson, have just finished the sidecar season winning the New Zealand Sidecar Association’s Formula 2 series for bikes up to 600cc.

They also took fourth place overall in the open-class Motorcycle New Zealand championships “We are the only all-girl team and one of only a few in Australasia. We do get quite a bit stick from the guys, but we can hack it. I love showing the boys we can do it just as well as them.”

This weekend Tracey returns to the Taupo track for sidecar racing on Sunday and a ‘have a go’ event on Saturday where anyone can pay to do a few laps in the sidecar, being held as part of the Demons and Daredevils motorsport festival.

The event marks a changing of the guard for the pink sidecar’s all-girl team. Tracey will have her last races with partner Jo Mickelson – who is leaving for her OE, and her first races with her new Tauranga-based passenger Tina Stirton.

Despite Tina’s experience as a road biker, and passengering for her partner, Tracey expects it will take time to become a tight unit.

“It takes a long time it doesn’t just happen. It took a good year for Jo and I to get there. It all comes down to time on the track to build that partnership.”

With sidecar passengers needing to ‘swing’ from one side of the bike to the other to help with balance and control at corners, the passenger and rider need to instinctively know what each other will do to get the best performance.

Tracey loves both roles – saying they both have appealing aspects, but ultimately she prefers to ride.

In a sport which is all about speed Tracey ironically is never sure how fast she is going.

Her bike doesn’t have a speedo and she instead relies on the rev counter and engine sound to guide her.

She estimates getting to speeds of about 210 km/h in her sidecar which was ridden by 16-time Isle of Man winner Dave Molyneux to win the 1996 event.

Tracey and sidecar racing husband Steve Bryan, who passengers for multiple national champ Andy Scrivener, have competed at rounds of the Austral-

ian series in 2011 and again in 2012 when Tracey and Jo were third in the first round of the Australian championships.

She would love to take her racing as far as she can, but says money is the limiting factor: “It depends how much money you’ve got as far as how far you

After watching his dad race off road it was only a matter of time before Dyson Delahunty would want to follow in his muddy tracks.

“I’ve been driving my dad’s 4WD since I was about nine on Poppa’s farm,” says 13-year-old Dyson who debuted in the Off Road Racing Championship’s in Meremere last

The Papamoa College Year 9 student lept at the chance to get involved when his father Jason asked if he would be interested.

“I got excited when dad came home from a meeting and said he had seen this car they were bringing in and asked if I would like one. I thought it was great.”

Dyson, who has been racing for one and a half seasons, went on to rapid success in his first full season last year winning two series for his age group and coming second oveall at the nationals champs.

“He had a bad day,” says Jason, showing his pride in Dyson’s achievements.

“This year he has jumped up to basically a full-size car that an adult would drive, but it’s a buggy - he’s finding it a whole lot faster and everything is bigger and more daunting, he’s playing with the big boys now.”

Dyson is modest about his success last season, putting much of it down to regular maintenance on the car.

“Me and dad had to work pretty much non-stop to keep it ready for the races,” says Dyson, who has his car based in his family’s Mount

Maunganui Stihl workshop.

When pressed Dyson says most people tell him he’s a gifted driver.

After a successful season in the junior class, Dyson was excited to be moving up to the open level and to eventually race his dad when Jason’s buggy is done up.

“It’s going to be fun racing dad and all the other adults and the drivers I idolise,” said Dyson before competing in the North Island season’s opening event at Meremere where he was third.

Next year, Dyson plans to race in some longer enduro events, including the highly acclaimed 100-mile Woodhill 100, before going on, to compete in the marathon Taupo 1000 event.

The two-day Taupo event, which sees drivers race 10 times around the 50 km off-road circuit each day, is a personal favourite for Jason who is determined to have his car ready for the September race. Jason was third in his class and 11th overall out of 60 cars when he competed in 2011.

Jason says the path to future success for Dyson all comes down to seat-time: “It’s just about getting out there and driving the car.”

Ben, a newcomer to off road racing, put his proven rallying skills to the test to throw down a challenge to others in the national off road championship series with his dominance of the UTV class, winning all races in a clean sweep on Sunday.

Series spokesman Mark Baker said Ben set some of the fastest lap times of the day, winning all four of his heats racing a Polaris in the UTV class which has been sanctioned in the series for the first time this season. UTVs are popular for recreational off roading in some countries and are powered by four-stroke motorcycle engines of up to 1000cc.

Ben, who took the series lead amassing the most points at the event, was named Most Valuable Driver.

We are looking forward to the coming season, but we suspect our best chance of a feed of bird might be at KFC. Take care out there, be aware of where your mates are, stay off the juice till after the shoot, and treat every gun as loaded.

I hear many reasons for and against having pets on the bed. During winter, they can be lovely heating pads that you don’t have to plug in or recharge. And you can keep things clean by putting a washable cover on top of the bedding to catch any dirt or hair.

But pets should not share bedrooms with allergy sufferers. Also, some dogs and cats have allergies to dust mites and washing powders, for example, and should have their own bed.

Some dogs and cats can become bossy if allowed on the bed. If your pet is wellmannered, and will get off the bed when asked, that’s okay. If your dog growls, or

your cat scratches, they need their own bed.

Care needs to be taken with tiny pets (and pets with tiny humans).

I have a chihuahua that loves to burrow deep under the covers, but I don’t feel it is safe for her to sleep there, due to the squishing-risk.

So she sleeps curled up with the other dog in our family, in their warm comfy basket on the floor.

For those concerned about transmitting disease, as long as your pet is healthy, regularly treated for fleas and worms, and brushed and/or bathed regularly, they are safe to be sharing the bed with human members of the family.

Western Bay of Plenty fire service spokesperson Robert Pinkerton says people need to be aware of fire risks during the winter months – especially where children may have access to matches and direct exposure to heating appliances.

“While portable electric heaters are less expensive and are a fast and convenient form of heating, particular care needs to be taken as to their use and maintenance.”

Robert says the Tauranga Fire Service attends up to 50 fires each year in homes caused by electric heaters.

“The rules of use may appear to be common sense.

However we still get called to too many potentially tragic incidences.

Waterfront playground construction gets underway A party of playground design consultants from Tauranga schools were the guests of honour at the sod turning ceremony for the city playground being built on The Strand reclamation.

Tauranga City Council staff went to a number of schools seeking ideas from among the facility’s future users of what will be included in the new playground, says planner Clinton Bowyer.

“Swings, slides are always high on the lists,” says council planner Clinton Bowyer.

“And spinners are very popular.”

The spinners for the water front playground will be the first of its kind in the country, using thick loops of rope for the seating and swinging part. There will also be an almost conventional swing, a bit of a ropes course and some slides.

“The other thing we noticed here is when the trains come past the smaller kids grab the fencing and watch the trains come past,” says Clinton. “We are going to build a little stand where they can look at the trains over the fence.”

Councillors and children meet at the site of the new waterfront playground.

The $300,000 playground is expected to open before the end of June.

The neighbouring fountain is under repair after its control chamber flooded last year.

Beachside auction fundraiser hooks 30 artists Funding projects to teach young children about respecting their environment is a focus for Papamoa Kindergarten’s first Beachside Art Auction.

The auction on June 15 is the kindergarten’s major fundraising initiative for 2013 and features art from 30 recognised local artists, including Owen Dippie, Peter Cramond, Doreen McNeill, Lisa Christiansen, Bob Tulloch and Timo Rannali.

Organiser Hayley Wain hopes to raise $15,000 from the auction.

“Fundraising is very important to our kindergarten as this, plus any grants we manage to get, pay for running costs. If we didn’t raise money, we wouldn’t have kindergarten.”

Artists set their reserve, which they retain, and anything bid over and above is a donation to

the kindergarten.

“Some artworks are being fully donated so there will be some very low reserves. We have some really popular artist names so hopefully they’re names alone will attract interest.”

Hayley says if the event goes well, they will look to run it on an annual or biannual basis.

The kindergarten will also hold a children’s artwork auction at the kindergarten the week before. This is a silent paper auction where artwork goes to the highest bidder on paper.

New tourism venture for Mount Two Mount Maunganui men are proposing to replace the former I-site building in Salisbury Ave with a $4 million cultural centre to cater for cruise ship tourists.

Maia Ririnui and Dr Randall Douglas presented their proposal to Tauranga City Council’s Projects and Monitoring Committee this week.

They want the council to supply Coronation Park land for the development. Because the cultural centre will be governed by a board of trustees, it will not affect the park’s reserve status, says Randall.The pair propose to develop the project using grants that it will be eligible for, completing it with a debt of about $500,000. It is expected to run at a loss for the first year and break even in year two

before beginning to make a steady profit.

It will thrive on the estimated 270,000 cruise ship tourists expected to pass through Mount Maunganui next year and into the future.

Figures show one in 10 businesses were helped by employee regulation in 2012 – compared with one in five that were hindered.

Statistics New Zealand revealed employees and customers were central to how businesses responded to different regulations. While employee regulation limited performance for some businesses, other types of regulations, such as those to do with workplace safety, helped them grow. Business performance manager Hamish Hill says the economy can benefit from having a more educated workforce from businesses who up-skill their employees in response to regulation – something 41 per cent of businesses did last year.

“Businesses spend a lot of time and resource complying with regulation, but they can see the benefit of it.”

Here we go again So the Labour and the Greens want to create a single buyer of electricity for the whole country. Oh no, here we go again.

New Zealand needs more businessminded people to help create jobs and opportunities for others, not less, and central government needs to lead the way.

If the Labour/Green idea to buy all the power is put into place, what’s that saying to New Zealanders?

‘Let central government make all the tough decisions in life on your behalf and you’ll be fine.’ What rot.

We need to wean ourselves off our ‘welfare/ state government knows best’ mentality. And the quicker the better, before it takes us all under.

The truth is welfare is failing us dismally. For the sick and the elderly I can live with, but for our young and the lazy it’s a cancer.

I should know, I’ve got a brother who went from the DPB to a sickness benefit and hasn’t done a day’s work for wages in over 30 years.

He’s never going contribute anything to himself, his family, his community or his nation.

He is essentially useless and is supported by a system that will reward his failures until the day he dies.

Not only can we as a nation not afford welfare for the young (look at Europe) but they themselves cannot afford it either.

Welfare for the young is a disease that effects hundreds of thousands of people in this nation.

It is not only failing them, but failing those who work and pay taxes to support them and is failing the nation internationally.

If we are to thrive and survive into the 21st Century we need more workers, not less. And the Labour/Green example this month of ‘more government by dummies’ does not set us a good example.

We can all contribute something. I don’t care if you’ve only got one leg, you can do something for someone at some point.

That’s how we thrive, by everyone contributing something. By setting and being good examples for our kids and our grand kids.

And those good examples should start with good central government decision making.

No more lurching to the left please.

Irresponsible Labour/Greens David Shearer and Russell Norman were being highly irresponsible in announcing their intention to implement a mechanism to bring power prices down during the period between the Mighty River Power Prospectus being issued and the price being set.

The effect of their action is that the price for the Mighty River Power shares, which at that stage had not been set by the institutional market, will almost certainly be lower than it would have been.

That in turn means the Government coffers will get less money from the float. We taxpayers suffer again !

Shearer and Norman are members of NZ’s Government in the wider sense

and are now on record of sabotaging an effort by the NZ Government to raise money to reduce the Government debt following the world financial crisis. The fact that they do not agree with National Government’s proposal is irrelevant.

They have shown crass irresponsibility in not announcing their proposal at least some weeks before the Mighty River Power Prospectus was finalised.

This matter alone shows that they are not fit people to be in control of New Zealand after the 2014 election. The fact that power prices have climbed at an enormous rate over many years is irrelevant to my point.

Tell the truth about power

Briefly...

Why don’t Labour tell the truth about the power prices, if you look back to 1970 we paid $25 per month for power, from a monthly wage of $224, we had just moved into a new all electric home, this was about 10% of my monthly pay.

The old house had open fires and a chip heater to heat the water, so this meant our power bill was around $10, more per month. This is what has happend in every home in NZ we are using far more power than ever before, in the 60s the power board, when reticulating a new sub-division allowed 3KVA per house in the 70s it went to 5kva and in the 80s to 7kva. I would say that it would be close to 10 to 12 now, so if you use more you pay more and that is why the bills are high.

Labour thinks it will stop the sale of the power companies but it won’t, it will only do damage to the whole power industry.

If they want to help people on a low income why not remove the GST on their power bill and rates.

Rooftop offender faces jail

A Tauranga man who clocked up 14 drink driving offences has been sentenced to one year and nine months’ jail time. Greerton man Steven Lindsay Rennie, 65, was convicted and sentenced in Tauranga District Court yesterday for his 13th driving while disqualified charge and 14th drink driving charge.

He was also indefinitely disqualified from driving for one year and one day.

Rennie earlier pleaded guilty to driving with excess breath alcohol, driving while disqualified and giving false details. The charges relate to when Rennie was caught drink driving at a police checkpoint in Paeroa on November 27, 2011.

He blew 584 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath – the adult limit is 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

Rennie provided police with false details at the time of the incident.

I am really quite astounded by the totally political manoeuvre instigated by the Labour/Green coalition to try to destroy the Government’s sale of shares in the power companies. It smacks so much of a “nah, nah, we’ll do anything to disrupt your plans”. The Labour party is completely clueless with a figure head with about as much charisma and personality as Tauranga’s Mayor, so they let themselves be led by these “Green” people.

I looked “green” up in Merriam-Webster’s on-line dictionary and this is what it says: a : deficient in training, knowledge, or experience <green recruits> b : deficient in sophistication and savoir faire : naive c : not fully qualified for or experienced in a particular function How bloody true is that?

A Brookfield man caught acting suspiciously on the rooftop of Caltex Otumoetai on Friday night is facing jail time. Quayde Richard Hulbert, 20, appeared in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday charged with possession of a bong, possession of screwdrivers with the purpose of breaking into a building, and being in an area of the service station without a reasonable excuse.

He is also facing a burglary charge relating to a separate incident.

Hulbert, who has been out of jail for two months, pleaded guilty to all four charges. Police arrested Hulbert on Friday night after he was spotted on the service station rooftop with screwdrivers and a camera. According to the summary of facts, Hulbert could provide no reason for being there.

Hulbert was remanded in custody and reappears in court for sentencing on June 12.

Jailed on 14th drink drive charge

Assault case moves to High Court

A Taupo dairy farmer accused of purposely pushing a cyclist off his bike in a road rage incident on Broadlands Rd will have his case heard in the High Court.

Joseph Arthur Frederick Roberts, 21, is charged with injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was earlier charged with assault but the charge has been upgraded.

He is due to appear in the High Court at Rotorua on June 6. Roberts is accused of pushing Rangipo prison officer Alasdair Slade off his bike in February while the 49-year-old was training for this weekend’s Ironman event in Taupo.

Alasdair suffered pelvic injuries and broke his collarbone in the incident.

Trial for drug accused father

A Tauranga father accused of importing cocaine and methamphetamine will head to trial in the High Court of Rotorua.

Sickness beneficiary Joseph Lance Evans, 50, denies the allegations. Evans is jointly charged with his 21-year-old son Seth Evans for importing cocaine and methamphetamine, and possessing cocaine and methamphetamine for supply.

He faces additional charges of possession of cocaine for supply, and supply of cocaine.

Joseph Evans is due to appear in court for a callover on June 6, while his son, who has also been committed to trial, is due back in court on May 13.

Home detention for false claims

A Tauranga based commercial fisherman and skipper Gary Robert Mitchell has been convicted for misreporting more than 15 tonnes of fish.

He was found guilty of five charges under section 231 of the Fisheries Act for knowingly making a false statement in a fishing return, for the purpose of obtaining a benefit under the Act. Mitchell was sentenced to seven months’ home detention and 200 hours community service when he appeared in the Tauranga District Court on Tuesday, April 23. The offending relates to five fishing trips undertaken in the Bay of Plenty between August 20 and September 30, 2012.

Mitchell carried out what is known in the fishing industry as “trucking”.

Councils in red zones Council League tables: The report compares 67 Councils from around NZ including TCC and WBOPDC and ranks them according to their results including: debt level, rates, governance, sustainability and more.

In one year TCC has dropped from 32nd to 48th and WBOPDC from 42nd to 58th, they are both nearing the “red zone”, this independent report states clearly that the WBOP Councils are slipping fast into financially troubled waters.

Despite this independent review both Mayors reject the league tables, they say “the finances are just fine!”

TCC Mayor said $400m debt “is high” (but that was back in 2010). By June 2012 Audit NZ confirmed the debt was $460m, since reported it had exceeded $500m. So perhaps the league table ranking presented looks better than it should, surely the Mayor will remain happy with this “small” difference and I would guess thinks “that is not a problem” either? Perhaps Tauranga is a lot worse than the League Tables shows?

WBOPDC is a smaller Council but all the same problems exist, unbelievably the League Table ranks them as a lot worse than TCC but that most likely is because the figures used are a bit more accurate at WBOPDC than TCC by the odd few $100m or so.

On Tuesday I left my handbag in a trolley at the supermarket at Fraser Cove. Half an hour later I returned to find it had been handed in and I cannot thank the person enough. Demanding answers from mayor I know of two people who have asked the mayor to please explain what exactly is involved in the council’s Relationship Protocol with Ngai Tuhoe. To my knowledge the mighty one has not deigned to acknowledge either of these people. Well, I am a ratepayer requesting an answer and I would like Mr Crosby to reply to me through this column. We need to know the nuts and bolts of what is about to occur.

I have heard the words “co-management and cogovernance”. Take heed of events in Auckland!

The Auckland Council has had thrust upon them the Maori Statutory Board and with them came some nasty little surprises. With a budget of $3.4 million, they returned with a wish list of $295 million over 10 years to be funded by ratepayers.

Bad news six pack: • Mayors Crosby and Paterson whining in tandem about abysmal league table rankings. Well ratepayers have been onto this for yonks and now a professional independent source vindicates the critics.

• Waterfront Development plans, the Council taskforce talking up the ugly container restaurant again. Forget it, this is not in keeping with projected clean, open greenspace image nor the RMA Consent blurb or stated TCC Policy.

• Pyes Pa Crematorium Chapel – Yes, like other towns Tauranga should have a reception area, 100m2 about right but $225,000 cost way over the top for 4 walls, kitchen and toilet facilities. Never a Council business, ignore whingeing, must be user pays.

Just a couple of nonsensical items were - $72.3 million for guardianship of sky, sea and land, $116 million for authority over resources and affairs, $9.25 million for the right to participate in the community (pardon - that is free!), and my favourite - $31.75 million for the life force of ancestral lands and waters. Another was $42.8 million for the mana of Auckland iwi and hapu cogovernance arrangements.

The same word “co-governance” which is central to this deal with Ngai Tuhoe.

The mayor needs to explain to us quick-smart what exactly this co-governance with the tribe entails. We need to know why we were not consulted.

We also need to know that this will not cost us, the ratepayers one cent more than at present.

Mr.Crosby, I await your reply!

Time to consider the future council Bullying at Arataki skatebowl I am pleased that recent correspondents are urging people to think about the forthcoming Local Body elections as there is no doubt that we require a number of changes.

I would certainly not be necessarily supporting wholesale changes, as some councillors are performing well and in-depth knowledge of Council activities is also vital, but some councillors are revealing, with every vote that they cast, that there are potentially better people out there to replace them.

In my view the big issues facing the Tauranga City Council is the level of debt, rating changes and probable amalgamation of local Councils.

In respect to Council amalgamation many of us will remember the forced merger, in 1989, of

the Mount Maunganui Borough Council with the Tauranga District Council which at least initially was of little benefit to Mount residents and ratepayers.

I personally do not oppose consideration of amalgamation but if it is to occur it must be a win win to everyone and not a loss for one group and a huge benefit to another group and this is my major concern.

I understand that the current Mayor is a strong supporter of a BOP Super Council and I suspect he also has a desire that he will be Mayor of this super Council.

Take my warning that unless there is debate and consideration of the advantages and disadvantages this is going to happen without the proper input from the people that are going to be most affected and that’s the ratepayers.

Later this year we have the opportunity to elect the Council that is going to represent us over the following three years and if there are people considering standing now is the time to make that decision and possibly like minds (but also individual thinkers) could decide upon forming a team to stand.

Trouble with wild cats

As I looked around me at the devastation left as a busy session at the local cinema filed out it gave me cause to reflect on our society.

Popcorn strewn across the floor and seats in copious quantities. Half full drinks, some lying sideways, all around. Wrappers, sweets and empty ice cream cones all adding to the colour.

A desperate usher fastidiously beginning the cleanup before the next session. As I sat there, trying to enjoy the closing credits but somewhat distracted, it occurred to me that in my beloved country I could *Buy shares in power company’s that have assets I already own *Sodomise my mate and call it holy matrimony *Not protest at sea about anything *Annoy people by trying to say “Good morning” while they were on there cell phone/computer Somehow I left the theatre feeling a little queasy. Perhaps it really is time to stop reflecting and start acting?

Having cats living wild in managed colonies can’t be right. Some will always go hungry even when food is put out for them and disease will be more prevalent in a colony. Cats will always hunt; it is instinct, even when they are being fed. They stop hunting only when old and infirm.

Whether or not you agree with Gareth Morgan, at the end of the day, its not only what is best for the native wildlife but what is best for the cats. Once again we have altered the balance and it is up to us to put it straight.

I have kept cats, dogs and birds for over fifty years so I do understand their likes and dislikes. Living in a colony would be a very stressful environment for cats – certainly not an easy life.

I know that some people catch cats, have them speyed, neutered and then release them back into the colonies, but that is not the answer. There will always be more cats joining them.

Surely it would be more humane to put the time and money into euthanizing them. We don’t want people to start poisoning them or using gin traps to reduce the numbers. The local Councils don’t seem to want to address the problem and neither do the SPCA. There are other animal organisations in this area – surely they can all work in together to help solve the problem.

The cold wet winter weather will be hard for cats in the colonies – someone needs to take responsibility as the numbers are increasing in some areas.

Just build a new city Instead of chucking money at Auckland’s transport system isn’t it about time a brain cell in the beehive started to think about establishing a new city somewhere.

This country is being stifled by the extension of badly placed and badly designed cities that no amount of money will sort out the transport woes of.

A country the size of New Zealand that only has four major cities is a joke.

Last week I accompanied my 10 year old grandson to the Arataki skatepark so he could enjoy his favourite sportscootering.

We had previously been there and the venue, though crowded, was generally a friendly one, with kids swapping scooters and helping out with new moves.

This time I needed to call the police.

A group of youngsters 12-14 years old, decided to make my grandson a target for their bully tactics. He was intimidated, sworn at, his scooter wrenched from him, he was threat-

ened with a punch in the teeth. I was After I addressed the issue with the group, they came and spat on my vehicle, then sat on the bonnet and slid themselves over it. My grandson and others like him deserve to feel safe in a public place , and I appreciate the police input. Maybe a warning to those responsible and perhaps the idea of banning offenders from the skateparks could be an option, such as is the case with malls. I am sure there are other concerned adults out there. Let’s make a stand.

Remembering past musical heroes Last week was a bad one for musicians; every time I turned on the news it seemed like one of my heroes had died.

On April 22 Richie Havens passed away. The world is, I think, split up into two sorts of people: people who love Richie Havens’ music and people who haven’t heard it yet. He was a unique talent, who created unique music and his influence, despite never topping the charts, is all around us in things we listen to.

I first saw Havens on the film of Woodstock, where his long-haired shamanistic presence and intense rhythmic workout on “Motherless Child” blew me away. “If we all could sing like we wanted to, we’d all sound like George Jones” Waylon Jennings once sang. I’m pretty much with Waylon on that one. I don’t think Jones’ death came as a particular shock to anyone; the biggest surprise was that a man who had lived so wildly lasted so long. He was 81.

Simply brilliant

George Jones was brilliant. Ritchie Pickett first introduced me to him many years back and I don’t know if I ever thanked him. Ritchie appreciated not only his music – he would have spanked me for calling it “cheesy” - but also the man’s lust for life (and alcohol and cocaine).

Jones was once stuck at home after his wife of the time hid the car keys to stop him driving intoxicated to the liquor store. Half an hour later he was arrested on the side of the road, drunk in charge of a ride-on lawn mower. They don’t make ‘em like that every day.

A certain sound

And George Jones was simply about the best country singer who ever lived. He sang like a saxophone, like a country Van Morrison but with more control. He could swoop between notes and cover octaves in

Billy Sherrill also added copious strings to the mix, making these some of the most sentimental records ever made. But they worked – because of that voice. Jones’ biggest hit from those later years was “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and gives some idea of the level of cheese that he overcame with his vocal skill and sincerity.

Let’s delve into that song a little.

The reason – not wanting to give too much away – that “he stopped loving her today” is because he is dead.

That’ll do it. After the first verses and chorus the music dips down low for a “recitative”, a spoken passage, and George intones solemnly: “You know she came to see him one last time / Oh and we all wondered if she would / And it kept running through my mind / This time he’s over her for good.” Really? Really???

Cue a sudden building climax of strings into the heartbreaking last chorus. That’s country music for you...

RIP George Jones.

Fantastic Not bad at all Dreadful

LIFE OF PI Dir: Ang Lee - Starring: Suraj Sharma, Ifran Khan, Adil Hussain OK, I realise that despite it’s Oscar nominations this could be a hard sell. It’s a story largely set on a small boat at sea which contains a shipwrecked boy and a tiger. And it doesn’t star anyone you’ve ever heard of (unless you’re Indian). And it’s brilliant.

When my friends started going to see this at the movies, and raving about it, I was still a little sceptical, despite the fact that I think Ang Lee is as good a director as is working today.

How can you possibly make a film about a boy and a tiger in a boat?

Fear not. This is one of those films where

So there’s this Hobbit, never been outside The Shire, and a grey wizard comes and asks him to go on a quest. He leaves the Shire along with some other small folk for a long journey. Along the way they visit the elves (Elrond, Galadriel, etc) and there’s a white wizard who’s a bit disagreeable. And the Hobbit gets a special sword and a magic ring. They’re being followed by nasty orcs (led by a particularly big mean one) and, after fleeing from hundreds of enemies through giant caves under a mountain, they have a battle with the orcs but get away. But the big one’s still chasing them. Fellowship of the Rings anyone? No, The Hobbit . Peter Jackson does a bang-up job, despite certain familiar story elements.

from the first thirty seconds, the start of the beautifully-filmed title sequence, you just relax and know you are in safe hands and in for something special. Something magical.

It is a film so rich in humour and humanity and so vibrant with strange and exciting images that it remains mesmerising throughout. The almost Coen-brothers-like wit of the early story; the astonishing shipwreck; the extraordinary scenes at sea; the tiger!; the subtle sadness of the tragedy behind the storytelling; it’s pitchperfect stuff – if you have any reservations, abandon them and watch this wonderful film.

Liu. It is the baby of Quentin Tarantino’s musical collaborator RZA, who wrote and directed with help from another QT alumnus Eli Roth (Hostel). He also stars and does the mumbling voice-over. It’s a story of revenge and hijacked gold, assassins, clans and people called Silver Lion, Lady Silk and Madam Blossom. Expect inventive retro fighting, blood and cheesiness. Note: I watched the extended version (oddly unmentioned on the blu-ray cover) which has an extra 12 minutes.

I’m a little confused by Woody Allen’s recent releases in New Zealand. He makes (and has for forty years) one film a year.

2011’s was the very successful Midnight in Paris. His 2012 film To Rome With Love is here on DVD. Yet his 2010 film You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger has just been released at cinemas. Who knows?

Anyway, this Italian romp continues the Woody Tour of Europe and is pretty light and frothy, a little magical realism outing that sees a man singing on stage in a shower and various people falling in love. Sweet, but not his best by any stretch.

In The Dinosaur Project .a team of cryptozoologists head to the darkest Congo in search of the “African Loch Ness monster”. They find more than they bargained for from the git-go, their plane downed almost immediately by pterodactyls. The entire film is “found footage” - with all its frustrating irritants – but mainly told from the perspective of 15-yearold Luke, son of the expedition leader, who stows away on board. As that suggests, this is pretty vanilla stuff and, oddly, a little short of dino variety as events focus more on the bickering team members.

Price struggle Despite producing more than 250 shows a year and hiring more singers than any other opera company in New Zealand annually – Operatunity are struggling to make ends meet.

This dilemma is not for a lack of numbers at their professional Daytime Concert Series – but because of their strive to keep ticket prices to an absolute minimum by not increasing their $30 ticket price in the last three years.

Operating from a seven metre Toyota Coaster, director Susan Boland says five to seven people travel in the mini-van each five-week season and do everything themselves – including packing, ticketing, providing and serving lunch, lighting and sound, mingling with the audience, cleaning up, and performing.

“Everything we do we try keep the price under control. It’s not enough. That’s why we need help,” says Susan.

“It’s a fine balancing act every time. I believe very strongly we have built up a business that has a social conscience.”

Operatunity began with an audience of nine people 11 years ago and has gone on to produce more than 250 concerts a year.

They perform in Tauranga to audiences of 350-500 each time.

“The aim of it is that people have a really great experience.”

Susan says the South Island shows are especially taxing, beginning at 9am, including two shows, two meals and ending with a five-hour drive to the next city.

“The big thing that’s important to us is that the artists mix with the audience right from the start. We feel we give people a whole experience.”

Operatunity arrives in Tauranga today for ‘Hell on Wheels’ – the second performance of the Evening Concert Series. Tickets are still available. Next week, they’re performing the first ever New Zealand professional season of ‘Forbidden Broadway’, playing at Holy Trinity Church in Tauranga on Friday, May 10 at 11am.

Small business with a big heart Purple Patch is no ordinary business – but one with a big heart.

Lining the Grey St store are clothes and toys made from around 200 members who have been dedicating their time and skills for 32 years to make high-quality handmade goods.

The not-for-profit organisation sells the lovingly made items and supports Tauranga craftspeople and charity organisations by giving away any profits made.

Hamilton woman Joan Byrant started Purple Patch 40 years ago in the Waikato, and after a successful eight years, Joan moved to Tauranga.

Since then, Purple Patches have also been started in Christchurch, Taupo and in Tauranga.

Tauranga club president Yvonne Corlett says she enjoys making clothes and toys to be sold in the shop.

Daycare centres are a major recipient of their wooden toys, she says.

“I enjoy it and so many of the other women do too. We are all volunteers, no one is paid so they come in because they want too.”

Purple Patch sells a range of handmade items, including baby wear, soft and wooden toys, doll clothes, tea cosies and embroidered hand towels.

Yvonne says the society has made many generous donations to charity organisations since opening in the city.

This year donations went to the TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter, Tauranga Community Tauranga club president Yvonne Corlett enjoys making Patrols, Tauranga Riding for Disabled, St John’s Health Shuttle, Waipuna Hospice and Surf Life clothes and toys to be sold in the shop.

Horan to sing at variety concert Otumoetai Lions Club is hosting its annual free Elderly Citizens Variety Concert this Saturday and independent MP Brendan Horan is not only the master of ceremonies – he is singing too.

Convenor of the event Harry Kiriakidis says Brendan will be singing and playing the guitar as well as being the MC of the event at Bureta Park Motor Inn. It is the third year the free concert and afternoon tea has been held at the motor inn since Bureta Park opened its doors to the Lions Club.

Harry is pleased to see a business so dedicated to helping the community.

The entertainment line-up also features Margaret Harper who will be playing the harp, Celtic dancers, and performances by barbershop chorus – Harmony A Plenty.

through Adam, which was to express His wisdom, power, nature and character through human vessels in their individual and unique distinctiveness.

Adam’s sin (and fallen man’s sin) related to his independence from God and trusting in himself to outwork life with “self ” as the source.

Meditate on these verses: Ephesians 3:20, “Now to Him who, by the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams]”.

Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ [in Him I have shared His crucifixion], it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me, and the life I now live in the body I live by faith in (by adherence to and reliance on and complete trust in) the Son of God,

Who loved me and gave Himself up for me”. Acts 17:28, “In Him we live and move and have our being”.

Ephesians 6:10, “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might” – not our own.

Colossians 2:9-10, “For in Him the whole fullness of Deity continues to dwell in bodily form [giving complete expression of the divine nature]. And you are in Him, made full and having come to fullness of life [in Christ you too are filled with the Godhead— Father, Son and Holy Spirit—and reach full spiritual stature]”.

John 15:4, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me”.

Remember their sacrifice Last week, we have as a nation celebrated Anzac Day.

The day we set aside each year to remember, and be thankful for those who gave their lives in war, and, especially the First and Second World Wars. We particularly remember their sacrifice so that we could live a life

of freedom and peace.

And as we watched the breakfast show on Anzac Day morning, and we saw and heard the remembrances, I could not help but think of the sacrifice not only of those soldiers – but the sacrifice that Christ made for us in his death on the cross.

his life for our freedom and peace and to gain for us a secure future.

It is interesting to hear that the numbers of people attending Anzac Day services is increasing as a new generation gets on board and expresses not only an interest in, but thankfulness for, the sacrifices that were made initially nearly 100 years ago in the days of the First World War. As Christians we can look back 2000 years ago and can remember the life of Christ and his sacrifice and be thankful for what he has done, not only for us, but for all mankind.

We remember that sacrifice in our worship songs and in our church services and more specifically in the communion service, when using the memorial that Jesus gave, we come with thanksgiving for His sacrifice.

I hope that Anzac Day continues for many more years to come and that all men will continue to remember the death and sacrifice of Jesus until he comes back.

As the bible says in 2 Corinthians 9:15 (NIV) 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!
