Yet next week Hazel, of Tauranga, will celebrate her 103rd birthday. The sisters are the eldest of eight children in a family who have lived to a late age. Unfortunately, it seems to be true. At least according to our latest research statistics, which show that readers are drawn more to bad news than good.

No matter how much we think we want good news, it’s the shocking events that get more attention from you.

The latest SunLive readership figures, which are constantly climbing, still show that disaster and death are the most read articles on the Bay’s leading news service.

Near the top of the list is funeral notices.

On some days, the number of people checking the funeral notices on www. sunlive.co.nz outstrips those clicking on the homepage.

Here at the Sun, we’d like to think this is not so much a morbid fascination with fatality – but more a strong urge amongst our caring readers, focused on the wellbeing of their fellow man.

However, the statistics don’t lie. That is one of the harsh realities, and I suppose advantage, of the electronic information age. We know exactly what is being read, by who, for how long, on which browser and even the size of screen it’s appearing. The upside for advertisers is they know exactly how many people are seeing their message.

That’s another reason SunLive is flourishing. Advertisers know that it works well and outstrips daily paper results. When teamed with the weekly Sun paper advertising, it’s an unbeatable combo.

But back to the death and doom – next on the list of most viewed is anything to do with crashes, disaster, murder and mayhem.

The old newspaper saying, “if it bleeds, it leads” would seem to still be true.

The only non-death related story to feature in the top twenty last week, was the flooding.

It was a long way down the list before a non-death or extreme weather damage story made the popularity list.

SunLive is averaging more than three minutes reading time per session, according to Nielsen Market Intelligence – the third longest average session time in NZ, longer than the gossip in the Woman’s Weekly.

Readers view more than 200,000 SunLive pages a week. It is the fifth ranked news website in NZ behind Stuff and Granny Herald’s site. Not bad for a Tauranga based, locally-owned company going hard out, without any corporate backing.

I’m sure that if we ran a headline that stated:

Kitten crosses 12 lane motorway to rescue children’s church choir it would achieve a huge number of hits.

Unfortunately, those sensationally good stories are very rare. Reality is, bad news happens more often.

Most hardened news hounds know this.

That’s why ailing newspapers all around the country are clinging to what is left of their circulations, by producing bigger and blacker headlines of bad news. To the point that a lot of you are saying, “we’re

sick of this, we are tired of being bombarded with all this bad news.” Oddly, your next move is to pick up and buy those headlines, because human nature demands that you cannot resist.

A case in point is a certain local newspaper in this region, with falling circulation, that publishes increasingly dire stories on the front page. Even to the extent of running old news, sometimes several months old, often the court sequel, as if the event happened today. The reader is fooled into buying the paper thinking they’re missing something, when in fact it’s merely the regurgitation of a crash or an incident from many months earlier.

Most of the facts are old, but they’re dusted off, propped up and given a bit of tarty makeup in the hope you’ll be fooled long enough to part with the cash.

It’s a bit dishonest, but achieves the short term aim of selling a few more papers that day.

You choose the news

The long term effect, however, is that people soon tire of being suckered. They also tire of the endless bad news that they have no control over.

This is where the new media, the electronic news services such as the highly successful SunLive, thrive.

It’s all there for you, and you can pick and choose what, when and how you read it.

The reader can decide for themselves what is important. Suddenly, you are in control of the priority of your reading.

We don’t have to dress up old mutton as news lamb. Plus, it’s free, and you get to comment.

Call for help from haven Casey Fredericks has had a tougher week than usual at the Haven of Grace refuge.

A shelter for homeless, pregnant and abused women is struggling after heavy rain Monday night created a flood that swept sewage contaminated water through all their possessions.

The residents at Haven of Grace refuge were going to move to a new house on Tuesday, and had packed all their possessions into boxes in the garage where the flood swept through half a metre high, contaminating everything.

“Environmental Waste gave us two skip bins, which helped,” says director Casey Fredericks.

“We are getting there. Unfortunately me and one of the other

girls in the garage yesterday have come down sick. She’s having the day off, but I’ve still got a job to do, so I’m still here.

“It’s taking time but we are going to make progress. It’s still just a huge mess.”

Four girls and Casey have filled three jumbo skips with the remains of what few possessions some of the residents had.

The new house has only a few resin chairs for furniture, says Casey.

They have lost the freezer, dryer, washing machine.

“We need furniture. Our big thing is dressing tables. Every time we turn around we find something else has gone on the skip.

“All the pillows got saturated.

You think about the big things,

but it’s all the little things they have lost; their bathrobes, slippers, toothbrushes, hair brushes, toiletries, the food’s gone.”

Their land line phone has died and manager Vicki McNamara’s car was also written off in the flood.

While they recover from the flood and move into an empty house, the agency referrals of women in need keep coming in.

Casey received two new referrals on Tuesday while she was looking at the damage, and four more on Wednesday.

“And while we are doing this, we have still got to help the girls that we have got,” says Casey.

“A lot of people have been through worse. At least it’s not like Christchurch.”

Forget about dairy cows or sheep, Tauranga identity Jeff Ingram has taken a different approach to the farming life.

Jeff, who was brought up on a farm and is a common sight cycling around Tauranga wearing his fluorescent vest and cheery smile, has got a name for farming a less popular livestock – tiger worms.

On top of regular work putting out tables for the Mount Main Beach cafes, and casual labouring and landscaping jobs, Jeff, 54, keeps himself busy with his own gardening supplies business,

making organic fertilisers from his worm farms.

Jeff, who was born with a disability, sells his concentrated worm tea, a worm-seaweed blend and worm casts direct to customers at the Mount Maunganui Farmers market every Sunday – with customers often coming back for more.

“It’s a good time to do it (dig in worm casts) now, before spring comes. Your plants will go well.”

He says the diluted liquid fertilisers are a great natural boost to plants, either sprayed directly onto plants or to feed the soil.

Jeff – who originally started worm-farming about 10 years ago before it became popular –

remembers his first efforts began in a bathtub, but switched to smaller boxes to make it more manageable. The worm farms are fed on coffee grinds and food scraps he collects from cafes with his bike trailer.

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic work skills programme coordinator Garry Barnett, who had Jeff on his course two years ago, says Jeff was a great role model for other students as someone who ‘got off his backside and just got stuck in’.

“It’s good to be busy. There is always lots of work to do,” says Jeff – who won bronze in the 3000 metres at the Special Olympics in Indiana, USA, in 1987.

They may not quite be the elixir of youth, but centurion sisters Hazel Bryce and Queenie Alexander believe they are key ingredients to help keep ahead of old father time.

Whenever they begin to feel out of sorts they both turn to the family tradition of a raw onion sandwich.

While the onion trick has not caught on with their children, Hazel’s daughter Jill is a firm believer in a daily dose of mineral salts.

“Just a pinch in a cup of water every morning, it’s full of minerals,” says Hazel, 102, of Tauranga, about the kruschen salts she began taking 50 years ago to help with arthritis.

But it is clearly more than just health tonic on their side – with Queenie, 104, of Mount Maunganui, the oldest of six siblings aged at least 84.

Next week Hazel celebrates her 103rd birthday, while a family reunion planned for the family’s early home town of Te Kauwhata later this month will see the six siblings together again with brother Ivor, 100, from Auckland,

Asked if there was a family tradition of living old, Queenie says their mother and Aunt Gertrude’s achievement at reaching 86 is nothing special.

“I don’t think they were very old. They were only 86.”

While neither have smoked, they occasionally have a drink, and believe keeping active with gardening and exercise helped keep them healthy.

“Its sensible living, hard work, sensible fresh food and exercise,” says Queenie.

In fact, one wonders how many medals the New Zealanders would win if rowing had as many events as a sports like swimming.

The hockey teams are also progressing well – particularly the women, featuring Gemma Flynn and Sam Charlton, who beat both Australia and South Africa, and were due to tangle with Argentina this morning (Friday).

The men, led by a goal from Andy Haywood, beat India 3-1 on Thursday to soothe the sores of an earlier 2-0 loss to Korea.

The men’s football team, with Tommy Smith, were bounced from their tournament after losing to Belarus, drawing with Egypt and being outclassed by Brazil.

While some of the New Zealand team knew they were bound for the London Olympics six months ago, the call-up has come much later for Tauranga decathlete Brent Newdick.

Brent, 27, was among the final athletes named – but he has been training hard in the belief he would be there.

Brent has been doing his final preparations in Cardiff and number one fan and mother Rose Newdick says everything is going well.

“He’s pretty happy with how he’s going. He’s fully recovered from his back injury and has a really good mindset.”

Rose says it was a bit unsettling for Brent to still be competing for a place so late, but he always believed he would make it.

The former Tauranga Boys’ College student, who combines his athletics with studies in sports science and business at AUT, has been mainly training at Auckland’s Millennium Institute – as well as competing at a few events in Australia and Europe earlier in the year.

Niggles from a back injury in Australia flared up on his May visit to Europe, forcing him to drop out of two major decathlon events during the competitions. He has since had his spine realigned.

“He says he’s back to the great shape he was in when he went to Australia – where he set a couple of personal

Hamish, who grew up in Tauranga before shifting to Australia for a few years, was last month named as a reserve for the New Zealand Olympic Games team.

While seasoned core team members may be disappointed with a reserve role, goal-keeper Hamish was delighted to get a place on the bench, given the dominance of permanent goalie Kyle Pontifex.

“Honestly, I was surprised. I was pretty rapt to get named. It was going to be a huge ask to overtake Kyle – on his day he’s one of the best players in the world.”

Hamish made his New Zealand debut at the Four Nations tournament in Nottingham in 2010, playing against Japan. Kyle’s dominance of the goalkeeping position (147 Black Sticks caps) has kept Hamish on the sideline since.

The former Tauranga marine studies student has seen him training hard in Auckland since getting the call-up to join the 25-member Black Sticks squad in April. It is an opportunity he has poured everything into.

“I came up here with my own goal to train as hard as I can – to get fit, lose some weight and really give it my best shot.”

The Weekend Sun Preparing for sea lettuce You may have noticed that there are quite large build-ups of sea lettuce in the southern part of Tauranga Harbour, which is quite unusual for this time of year.

Indications are that we can expect El Nino weather conditions this summer, following the last two summers, which were La Nina. El Nino is characterised by a predominance of westerly winds with drier conditions in eastern areas and more rain in western parts of the country. These conditions usually favour sea lettuce growth in Tauranga Harbour.

The last El Nino summer was the 2009/10 summer when 2800 tonnes of sea lettuce were removed from Tauranga Harbour beaches and the Mount Main Beach.

Council misses the mark It is hard to believe that the Western Bay of Plenty District Council set out in April 2011 on a programme to review the representation structure of its organisation for 2013 and came to an embarrassing halt this month with absolutely nothing positive to show for its efforts.

They workshopped for six months and chose their method of voting in September 2011. They had their suggestion of two Maori councillors rejected by Maori in October and workshopped a new structure by June 2012. Within a day their work was overturned and replaced by an unworkshopped model which they offered to the public a month ago for consultation for the first time.

The council is now in trouble. The yes/no option left absolutely no place for any submitter, individual or community board to have their alternative plans or suggestions discussed at the hearing or by the council at decision time.

Get with the programme!

Regional council chairperson John Cronin reported on SunLive last week that the Local Government Conference unanimously rejected Central Government’s signalled intention to change the ‘purpose of Local Government’.

LG Minister David Carter has since indicated that National has no plans to backtrack on this. And neither should they! The ‘Power of General Competence’ is incredibly broad, and combined with the current requirement to ‘consult to death’ is costing ratepayers millions of dollars.

Only three days fishable – nearly a nil return In the last ten days recreational fishing in the Western Bay of Plenty has really only been practical on at the most three days.

Biting back IN THE BAY

We feared a NIL return.

Very few went recreational fishing, and even fewer appeared to have landed anything worth mentioning.

But then some came to light…

Brett Keller (Manutere) last Friday was in the Middle Ground and inside Motiti, finding masses of too small snapper. Most landed were returned.

Eventually they did strike some reasonable-sized snapper and some good-sized tarakihi. At the end of the day they had an overall acceptable catch.

Garth Le Lievre (Deepstar) was around Motiti Saturday bottom fishing in ‘washing machine’ uncomfortable sea conditions, but they still managed an overall average tarakihi and porae take.

Sam Underwood (Miss Fleur) mid last week at the Mayor Knolls the conditions were definitely not the best, but they landed 13 bluenose and two gemfish.

Saturday again at the knolls and also at the back of the Penguin Rise conditions had deteriorated further. They landed quite a few small fish early, many too small, but of the target hapuku species they landed only one bass and two gemfish.

Our veteran Papamoa kontiki fisher was at East Papamoa last Thursday out 1200 to 1800 metres.

He brought in seven good-sized snapper and two gurnard in three sets. A fellow kontiki fisher nearby brought in three good-sized snapper in one set.

Friday in deteriorating conditions our Kontiki regular brought in four snapper and two kahawai in two sets. Thursday and Friday were the only days beach-fishable. Other days there were huge waves, strong currents, and strong winds.

A few surfcasters made the attempt, most landing nothing at all. The few successes were of odd kahawai.

Slick fashions inspired by Rena Devastated by pollution washing ashore after Rena’s stranding, Tauranga fashion student Charlotte Bishop chose to channel her anger into her work.

Charlotte’s efforts, resulting in her liquid latex dress ‘Black Tide’, have just earned her the supreme prize at the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards in Gore.

“When Rena happened, like everyone around here I was pretty upset about it. So I felt I had to do something positive with a truly tragic situation, so I created a design to try and do some good.

“It was horrible. It affected the

region so much, so I wanted to do something to make it a little easier.”

Inspired by pictures of oiledbirds and seeing her flatmate apply underseal to his car – the aspiring designer, who is completing her third year studying fashion design in Tauranga, set about creating her own oiled dress.

“The liquid latex was mixed with Indian ink to get the colouring the black glossiness. It was quite time-consuming. It was on the mannequin for five weeks, but it was well worth the time.”

The latex was applied on to a mannequin in 15 layers, each of which

took about 24 hours to dry.

Charlotte, who also won the avant garde award, was stunned to win the supreme award – saying the recognition will help her achieve her goal to become a top pattern-maker.

Her winning entry was part of her avant garde ‘Salvage’ series of three designs inspired by the Rena, including another dress and a jacket and pant-suit. Charlotte says she loves making avant garde designs as a student because she will not have the same chance when she is working in fashion.

Your city needs you Your rates bill is due out this week. Council budgeted a 3.6 per cent rate revenue increase to collect $102,757,000 from you as your compulsory contribution as a ratepayer/ property owner to fund the running of the city for the coming year.

In addition to that are the user fees for water and wastewater. It’s interesting how easily most people accept the financial burden as a property owner whilst only arguing the amount.

Why is it that homeowners, for example, get picked to pay for all manner of amenities totally unrelated to home ownership? Swim pools, libraries, parks and roads are available to everyone but all or part of their costs are met by only one sector. The point is that this financial obligation is unrelated to property ownership. It’s long been my view that the general rate should be met by some form of income levy, like ACC, out of your income. Call it a community levy that would pay for these community services. It would be much fairer in that it is an income related tax which is a true measure of ability to pay unlike the present capital based rating system which is not a measure at all of ability to pay.

Especially around Tauranga where many home owners are asset rich and cash poor.

Good old Government, in some quarters, even suggests a reverse mortgage so that you can burn up your hard earned equity in your home to pay. The double speak from some politicians, both Central Government and Local Government, is dazzling in its hypocrisy.

Len Brown, Mayor of Auckland, is quoted this week talking up “savings and efficiencies from amalgamation” in the same article detailing some Auckland ratepayers getting increases of 5 - 10 per cent and others getting a similar rates decrease. This is Titanic deckchair rearrangement stuff.

As noted previously there’s a bill of somewhere more than $600 million just to get the Auckland amalgamated council’s computers talking to each other. Some saving and efficiencies there. Yeah right!

Smoke and mirrors

In much the same way you saved $50,000 this week by not buying that new car you saw advertised. It’s all smoke and mirrors, this present rating system, it’s unsustainable and it’s that that needs addressing – not Government interfering in Local Government.

In fact Government makes all the rules that Local Government operates under and the solution is in Government’s hands. But successive Governments can’t or won’t do anything constructive until it’s too late for a lot of homeowners. In Tauranga the range of rates is $3383 for a $1 million house to $1892 for a $250,000 house for a difference of $1491. The Uniform Annual Charge (UAC) no, not a charge for staff uniforms but a fixed charge every property pays of 30 per cent of the

general rates goes up from $690 to $720. But clearly a difference of $1491 is still a large difference to pay for the same services. As noted earlier, totally unrelated to your ability to pay. Ratepayers with a $1 million home might be on basic super and those in a $250,000 home might be making $100,000. It’s just so unfair and so different to circumstances that prevailed when the system was created a long time ago.

New interim CEO Leigh Auton has requested meetings with individual elected members next week.

This is to meet and greet, outline our aspirations and views on how the organisation should go forward. It’s a regular ritual new CEO’s go through but nothing much comes out of it historically except each party sizes the other up. He needs to hit the ground running so there won’t be much time for niceties.

A review of the council organisation, a review of council controlled organisations and progression of the Route K issues are an absolute priority for elected members.

Leigh’s is an interim appointment which indicates council’s determination to get on and get the job done quickly.

One small bit of good news for him to commence is that there is a surplus from last financial year of $3.8 million due to a few factors including good management, and lower interest rates than expected. Council will decide what to do with it shortly but debt repayment and leaky homes support funding are likely to feature.

Looking ahead

Council will also be looking at how the next budget can be contained. There needs to be a united front on what can be done without – that’s both council and you accepting that things can’t go on as they have.

TECT All Terrain Park has won yet another award. It really is unique and a huge success due in no small part to the enthusiasm, work and financial commitment of the many organisations basing themselves up there. It’s really worth calling in to have a look.

The city has survived the recent rotten weather quite well. Particularly the storm water upgrades into which council has poured significant funding in recent years.

Levels of services are to a limit and are not expected to be a total fix for all downpours.

Daisy Hardwick walkway didn’t fare so well and is likely to be off limits for a while. Like the walkway along the Matua foreshore, council is looking for a more permanent fix rather than just clearing the debris.

In India this week some 600 million people went without power due to poor infrastructure planning. On a much smaller scale this is what we are trying to prevent in Tauranga with forward planning for water, wastewater/Southern Pipeline and stormwater to cope before the event rather than patching up as we go.

Flu levels under the microscope Health officials are closely monitoring this year’s seasonal flu levels as doctors deal with cases in the Bay of Plenty.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says there is regular reporting from surveillance general practices, Healthline and hospitals.

“The Ministry of Health is extending the nation-wide free seasonal flu vaccination scheme for eligible people for another month – to the end of August.

“New Zealand is now well and truly into the winter flu season and the latest information from the Ministry of Health is that the number and timing of people presenting with flu is not abnormal. Last winter was a particularly quiet year for flu.”

Tony says Canterbury DHB has had a spike in the numbers of people with flu but he has been told their levels appear to be plateauing.

“At this stage, the strains identified are covered by this year’s seasonal influenza vaccine.

“We have stock of around 20,000 vaccinations within the current budget, and we are advised that additional doses would be readily available.

“I have checked with DHBs around the country and they’ve confirmed all hospitals have plans to deal with winter flu pressures.”

He says the most important thing people can do is adopt the public health messages intended to slow the spread of flu: • Cover coughs and sneezes • Wash your hands • If you’re unwell, stay at home and contact your GP “These messages will feature on television and in newspapers over the next couple of weeks.”

Spaying strays Spay the Stray and de-sexathons are among plans to handle Tauranga’s growing stray cat problem, as is finding good homes for moggies living rough.

Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre Wildlife Trust has initiated their “Spay the Stray Cat Campaign” and “Adopt a Pet Programme” in response to concerns about growing populations of stray cats in the city and now the public’s help is needed.

Vet Liza Schneider, ARRC’s director and owner of Holistic Vets, Tauranga, says while ARRC’s main role is as a New Zealand native wildlife rescue and rehabilitation organisation, the issue of stray cats is one it couldn’t ignore.

Intervention needed

“Growing populations of cats can have an impact on our natural environment, on wildlife and on pets.

As they have continued to breed and, without intervention, this problem will continue to grow, likely at an alarming rate.

“We decided to take action and ask the public and local vets for help. We are working in cooperation with, and have the support of, the Tauranga City Council and the SPCA.” Vets have volunteered their time and already 10 cats captured in a trial for the project have been de-sexed and given health checks at a special surgery set up at Tauranga Kennels, ARRC’s rescue centre.

Liza says help is needed from the public to identify stray cat colonies and to assist in capturing them.

Humane solutions

Traps will be used and while some of the cats are very tame, others can be pretty wild and will need careful handling.

“We will try to find suitable homes for as many cats as possible but those that are unwell may have to be euthanised.

“However, in some cases, such as industrial areas, cats play an important role in controlling rodents, they may be desexed, ear notched and re-released.”

While some people may argue the stray cats should be destroyed because they can be seen as pests, Liza says a more constructive and humane solution may be to re-home these cats where possible.

Releasing them back into areas where they perform a useful purpose under someone’s care – where they won’t impact on wildlife – is also of utmost importance.

Getting to the bottom of a common problem Has your dog or cat been dragging their rear end along the ground, or licking under the tail?

Anal glands are small sacs, just inside the anus, that contain a smelly paste. The skunk uses theirs to scare away enemies, but our household pets have them to scent their stools, and provide

In the normal situation, when your pet defecates, the stool presses on the glands and empties them. They may also empty them when they are scared. Unfortunately, sometimes the glands can become blocked. This may be due to abnormal positioning of the gland, a period of diarrhoea (where the stool does not provide enough pressure to empty the gland), or concurrent skin disease resulting in excess production of anal gland fluid. If left untreated, they may develop an infection or even abscess.

Your veterinarian can check your pet’s glands, and empty them if required. This is a simple procedure, and usually sedation and pain relief is only required if the glands have become infected. An increase in dietary fibre can make the stool bulkier, and therefore improve gland emptying. If your pet is obese, a weight loss diet will help. Also, treating dogs’ skin disease can reduce excessive production of anal gland paste. On rare occasions, the glands cause such a problem that they need to be surgically removed.

A hawk, known to Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre staff as ‘Heathen Hawk’ due to his cranky disposition, is just one of many which, on average, pass through the clinic every two or three weeks.

It suffered the same fate as many birds of prey drawn to the easy pickings on roads and highways during the winter months.

‘Heathen’ was one of the relatively lucky ones, having suffered a broken wing which was able to be splinted.

It was treated with antibiotics and homeopathics, kept in captivity for six weeks and then released.

ARRC director and vet Liza Schneider estimates approximately 400 birds have been brought in for care during the past year, a testament to the increasing profile of the charitable trust.

There’s a heap of events that we excel in. We could find our own champions.

After all, a lot of sectors of the community have their own Olympics, such as the disabled.

If there are any former postmen involved, chances are, it was a mad dog that put them there.

The Postman Chase: This is similar to greyhound racing, but instead of a hare, we have a scared little postie on a bike, with a head start. The dogs should never quite catch the postie, otherwise OSH

Individual pursuit: Chase your own tail until dizzy, fall down.

Team pursuit: Me and Shelby and Gem give the seagulls on the mudflats a hurry up.

Stick fetch: Do we really need to explain this one?

Discus: Boss throws frisbee, dog catches and returns.

Repeat as necessary.

Javelin: Similar to the stick fetch, but stick is sharp on one end. All fun and games until someone loses an eye.

Standing jump: Grab as many low hanging avocados from the tree in a set time.

Rob the Tea Trolley: A new event for 2012. Try to nab a gingernut before security grabs you.

Cat Spotting: Extra points for the tabby, lowest score for the gingers. Possums do not count.

The Bark in the Park event was a great success with over 400 people and 225 dogs taking part on the day, with organisers already looking forward to next year’s event.

Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind (RNZFB) Community Fundraising executive Wendy Isaacs says more than $1500 was raised for the RNZFB Guide Dog Services.

“We are extremely grateful to Animal Antics for organising the event and choosing the RNZFB Guide Dog Services as the recipient charity again this year. The funds raised will be used to support the breeding, raising and training of our future guide dogs.”

A ’69 Chevy dream Winning a 1969 Chevrolet Pickup was not something Adam Pendred ever thought would happen to him.

As a lover of old classic things, the Greerton store owner could not believe it when he was told he had won the truck.

Now, Adam grins like the Cheshire Cat from the driver’s seat of the truck, parked proudly outside Garden Forest Marine on Cameron Road.

One of the store’s suppliers, Chainsaw and Outdoor Power Limited, ran a promotion where every purchase of Oregon Cutting Systems products made went into the draw to win a 1969 Chevrolet Pickup.

Adam says it was one of those occasions where he never imagined he would win.

“I thought, well I haven’t got a chance of that, but I’ll carry on buying the product anyway.”

He got the call a month ago and is rapt.

“I couldn’t believe it – I thought they were having me on.”

The truck will be used as a promotion vehicle for the store, that Adam has owned for 11 years.

But that doesn’t stop the staff fighting over who gets to take it home for the night, he says.

Heavy rain puts dampener on gardening

I hope that you have all got your roses pruned by now; mid to end of July is the best time. Follow the pruning with a spray of copper and spraying oil mixed together – this will clean up the bush from pests and diseases and prevent diseases getting into the cuts.

If you would like more but don’t have much room, look for trees on dwarf root stocks. These do not get very big and can be grown in small gardens, or you can look at growing fruit in containers. Most fruit trees can be grown in containers

if space is really a problem or you don’t have ground available to plant in. The only thing is that you must keep a good eye on watering and feed well to ensure that the trees get all that they need to prosper.

It is always better to let the ground dry before trying to do too much work as tramping around on the soaking soil just compacts the ground and destroys the structure, so be patient and give it a week or so before doing too much groundwork. Also don’t try to plant trees or shrubs in very wet ground, as this can cause compaction around the root ball and delay the development of a new root structure of the plants.

When conditions are right it would be time to start to prepare ground for the spring plantings of veggies etc. If you planted a winter green crop such as lupin or mustard it would need digging in before it gets too big or woody so that it has time to break down

Mount Maunganui College student Tyla Welsh has just returned from Australia where she represented New Zealand in the under-17 indoor volleyball squad.

Tyla played at the state championships in Dandenong, Victoria but the team was prevented from playing in the finals because they were an invitational team.

“We were invited to represent New Zealand under-17 indoor volleyball and made the cut for the gold and silver finals. But we weren’t allowed to play because there had to be a certain number of states that let us medal. But we didn’t have full support so we finished fifth, according to the Australians,” says Tyla.

Following the Dandenong event the team went to Horsham, also in Victoria, for the test series against the Australians. The Kiwis responded with true character.

“That’s where we took the trophy off Australia. It’s a big thing for us to win,” says Tyla.

Tyla has been playing volleyball since year nine.

“All my friends play and when we get together we have a lot of fun. I also made the New Zealand under 17 beach volleyball and under 19 indoor training squads this year but decided to stay in my own age group.”

There is no funding available from the NZ Volleyball Association, so Capes Medical has been very supportive, sponsoring Tyla’s expenses.

“There are a great number of talented Kiwi kids that don’t get the opportunity to compete at a national level because of the costs. Capes challenges all local businesses to support their local community,” says Peter Capes, managing director, Capes Medical.

Polytechnic opens doors to the public For nearly thirty years Bay of Plenty Polytechnic has been at the heart of the Bay community, with most locals either having studied there themselves or at least known a polytechnic graduate.

Over the past decade there have been huge developments at the Windermere campus.

Courting US college sport success Top young athletes from across the Western Bay are packing their suitcases and sports gear to prepare to fly to the US for college scholarships this month.

Among those heading off are three tennis players – Jacob Carey, Jamie Yates and Heidi Stewart – and runner Jamie Oakley.

Former St Peter’s College students Jamie and Heidi both credit a lot of their success to the top coaching offered at the Cambridge private school with South African coach Gerrit Steenkamp.

Like the others, Jamie, 18, who is heading to South Carolina Upstate College in Spartanburg, is excited about the opportunity the four-year scholarship offers .

Jamie started playing at about eight and was picked for the junior Davis Cup team three years ago.

Since finishing at Cambridge’s St Peter’s College last year, where both he and Heidi benefitted from the school’s tennis academy coaching programme, Jamie has pouring his time into training with Jacob.

Jacob, 17, switched from Tauranga Boys’ to Palmer-

ton North Boys’ College last year for his Year 12 studies – to take advantage of coaching from his older brother Sam Collins, who is based in the city. Stepping up training to six days a week has clearly paid off.

“I’m looking forward to going and chasing my dream.

It’s going to be a lot easier to get noticed playing on the college circuit rather than here.”

Heidi Stewart, 18, from Bethlehem, is heading to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, while Tauranga middle distance runner Julian Oakley has earned a scholarship to Providence and Te Puna hockey player Jessica Chisholm is off to Stanford University.

Julian returned last month from competing at the world junior athletic championships in Barcelona.

Figures released by the Department of Internal Affairs show that in the year ending June 30, 2012, the number of gaming machines in the country’s 1400 pubs and clubs decreased by 366 machines, or 2 per cent, from 18,309 to 17,943.

The number of gaming venues declined from 1421 to 1400 in the same period, while the number of license holders fell to 361 from 364.

Gaming machine revenue in the same period, though, increased by $1.7 million to $857.7 million.

The spending is captured through the electronic monitoring of non-casino gaming machines, which became fully operational in March 2007.

Expenditure of $212.2 million in the second quarter of 2012 was

3.5 per cent or $7.7 million less than in the same period of 2011, but 4 per cent up on the $203.7 million recorded for the first three months of this year.

In inflation adjusted terms, spending on gaming machines is down over 30 per cent since 2004/05.”

Martin says gaming machines are set to return 92 per cent of the money put into them to players.

He wouldn’t recommend that anybody wager $1000 a week on pokie machines, but says if they did, an average of $920 would be returned to the gambler.

The rest would be split between the government ($30), the community ($32), the owning and running of the machines ($15) and the administration of the gaming trust ($3).

Don’t plan on financially failing I think the biggest issue that New Zealand families face is not the world economic situation or high unemployment or national literacy but the lack of planning we do.

We have all heard the saying ‘if you don’t plan, you plan to fail’.

Well, if we all know it then why don’t we do something about it?

If I was running a company that did not have a plan or goals, would you want any share in it?

I hope the answer is no. If we

applied a more businesslike approach to our own households, we may end up better off. Many deride the government for the operational deficit they have but then pay the minimum interest payment on their credit card in the next moment.

Please believe me: planning with cash flow management can make a difference. You may find you can afford the retirement fund to provide for you in the future

and the insurance to protect your family. At the very worst, it will give you a big picture to cross-check all the myriad of small financial decisions you have to make throughout your life.

Keep this in mind: goals don’t have to be financial in nature. Going on a family holiday while the children are young to create more family unity is an admirable goal. Well, it costs money. The motivation is anything but. If you want help, just give us a call.

Business gets $5000 from Growth Fund A fund designed to give businesses a helping hand is now being taken up by Tauranga businesses.

The Growth Fund can be used to help with almost any part of a business, such as strategy, finance, HR, operations or marketing.

New owners for Otamarakau School Otamarakau School has changed owners as part of a Waitangi Claims settlement, but the new owners promise it will be business as usual at the popular rural school.

The opportunity to enter a sale and lease-back agreement over Otamarakau School is part of the Ngati Makino settlement bill signed late last week.

Ngati Makino lands lay between lakes Rotoma and Rotoiti and the coast, including the present site of the Otamarakau School.

In speaking in support of the Bill, Tauranga-based NZ First MP Brendan Horan says Ngati Makino have made assurances that it will be business as usual at the school.

“The parents, teachers and locals all guard it zealously. They were most concerned when they thought Ngati Makino was going to take that school, and it is my pleasure to put their minds at ease. It will be business as usual at Otamarakau School, and they do the

business of learning and caring for our most precious taonga, our children, very well.

“You will never find a better fishing competition than the Otamarakau School Fishing Competition at Matata,” says Brendan. “I will be there next year.”

The financial compensation includes $6.7 million quantum plus $3.6 million for a 20 year delay in settlement by the government, 3450 hectares of Rotoehu West Crown Forest licensed land, and right of first refusal over five sites of public conservation land.

Eight sites of special significance will be transferred to Ngati Makino, totalling 720 hectares; three sites will be vested with Rotoehu Conservation Forest, Te Kohanga, and Nga Porotaio-Waitaha-a-Hei; and a 3 hectare site for a wananga at whenua rahui over 256 hectares of Lake Rotoma Scenic Reserve.

A pathway to the future is charted with a payment of $500,000 to identify social service needs, and $1 million for the restoration of six marae in the Ngati Makino rohe.

Hemi Rolleston is a busy man.

The TECT candidate and chief executive of Te Awanui Huka Pak, who won both the New Zealand Institute of Directors Bay of Plenty Aspiring Director Award and the Bay of Plenty Export NZ Export Achiever Award within six days last month, is still riding high on his recent successes.

“I’d also like to acknowledge the Te Awanui board for trusting me to give me the opportunity to flourish.”

Hemi says he is as much Maori as non-Maori, but that it is good for Maoridom when its representatives win mainstream awards.

One day, he hopes such distinctions will prove more trivial than they already do.

“Nobody’s better than anyone else.

We should be comfortable in both worlds.”

Still, the work is never done.

“Most people are aware that Tauranga Moana is in the process of completing their settlements.

“I am very optimistic that this organisation will be a key part in assisting these structures in the near future and I

want to be there to support.”

Hemi sees his organisation as uniquely placed, in terms of industry and principle, to make the most of the current economic environment.

Maori are ‘ageless’ in terms of their intergenerational approach to land ownership, and Hemi believes Maori’s long term, low-risk planning fits well with the powerbrokers of Asian countries with similar philosophies.

For this reason, succession planning is never far from his thoughts.

“I can’t be everything – I have to make sure there is a succession plan behind me. It’s about creating pathways and internships.”

Hemi says he’s enjoying the build-up to the TECT elections and feels confident about his chances, but also hopes that traditionally low Maori voter turnout doesn’t hinder his chances.

“It seems like an easy job – you’re always going to be popular if you give away money. But it isn’t – it’s about making sure there’s more money to give away in the future.

Born and raised in Rotorua, Hemi gained a Bachelor of Management Studies and post-graduation qualifications in arts through Waikato University.

He worked for nine years as the revenue accountant at Tauranga District Council, before chairing the Tauranga Moana Tangata Whenua Collective and the Tauranga Boxing Club, and working on the government entity for Smartgrowth.

He then became chairman of 100 per cent Maori owned company Te Awanui Hukapak Limited, and now sits on economic development entities boards like Priority One and Bay

Concern surrounds Bay’s high crash rates Police are asking motorists to be extra careful during bad weather and drive to the conditions.

A number of crashes in the Western Bay of Plenty is concerning both police and Tauranga MP Simon Bridges.

During the region’s recent burst of heavy rain last week, nine crashes were recorded in a 24 hour period.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager, senior sergeant Ian Campion says most of the crashes were because people weren’t driving to the conditions.

“We had a total of nine crashes around the Western Bay of Plenty area and a number of those were as a result of people just not driving to the conditions.

“There was quite a bit of surface flooding around.”

Associate Transport Minister Simon Bridges says July has been a tragic month on the roads.

To date, 161 crashes have been recorded nationally, six more than last year.

Simon says the number of fatal crashes is down by 11.

“This means that the crashes that are occurring are resulting in multiple fatalities.”

He says the message for drivers is clear: “When you take chances on the road, you not only risk your life but also the lives of those in your vehicle and those you are sharing the road with.”

Simon encourages road users to do what they can to create a safer system.

“Make safety a priority. Buy the safest car you can afford, take simple steps like wearing a seatbelt, and avoid unnecessary risks like unsafe speeds or drink or drug driving.

“If you know someone that does drink or take drugs and drive, do something. It’s difficult to confront people about their behaviour, but the stakes are too high not to.”

Price pressure at pumps The price of petrol rose this week at most service stations to accommodate a two cent rise in excise tax. After two months of falls, fuel prices are on the rise again, with petrol increasing 14 cents per litre during July and diesel up 10 cents per litre.

The price of 91 octane petrol rose from $1.97 per litre to $2.11 per litre by month end in the main centres, with the price of diesel at most service stations finishing on $1.51 per litre.

Z Energy spokesperson Jonathan Hill says the price at the Z Station pumps has risen to accommodate the increased excise tax.

From 7am Wednesday 91 octane cost $2.129 per litre and Premium fuel went up to $2.209 per litre. The cost of diesel remains unchanged at $1.509 per litre.

“Tax makes up about half of the price of fuel at the pump but doesn’t apply to diesel, as that is collected through road user charges,” says Jonathan.

“After crude oil prices fell to 18-month lows of US$88 a barrel in June, they then jumped 20 per cent during July,” says AA

Petrol Watch spokesperson Mark Stockdale.

“That resulted in a 17 per cent increase in refined petrol prices, which for motorists equated to a seven per cent increase in petrol pump prices.”

The AA called on fuel companies to not increase their prices when the excise tax increased from August 1. The tax on petrol rose from 48.5 cents per litre to 50.5 cents per litre, with diesel Road User Charges increasing by an equivalent amount.

“Our monitoring of commodity prices and importer margins shows last week’s petrol price rise of three cents per litre was unnecessary. Fuel companies can afford to absorb the tax increase,” says Mark.

“If the tax was not increasing, the AA would be calling for a price cut, and we believe diesel pump prices should be coming

down anyway.”

The last increase in fuel excise was three cents per litre in 2010, with the government postponing a planned rise in 2011. Wednesday’s increase means the average motorist will be paying $700 a year in excise.

All of the excise and RUC is spent on road maintenance, safety improvements, road building and public transport.

Petrol vehicle owners contributed $1.45 billion in fuel excise in the last financial year while owners of light diesel vehicles paid $270m in RUC. Total taxes on petrol, including ACC, are now 61.1 cents per litre, plus another 27.5 cents per litre in GST at current prices for 91 octane, with taxes making up 42 per cent of the retail price of petrol.

Georgia on many minds

Walking to Mauao’s summit is an everyday occurrence for many, but a group of Tauranga residents are proclaiming it a huge achievement after completing Sport BOP’s Mount Challenge programme.

Mount Maunganui woman Sue Hatchwell, who still suffers from injuries to both arms and a foot 17 years after being electrocuted

in a major accident, is singing the eight-week programme’s praises.

Sue, who was among a group of 25 who recently undertook the programme, says everyone involved was excited to walk a little further along the track each week to eventually reach the top.

“Sport BOP is doing such an awesome job to get people motivated. It’s been huge for me.

Two years ago I couldn’t walk the base of the Mount, let alone up.

Now I’m involved with the group and I’m walking up at least twice a week.” Among the many senior

citizens who took part in the Green Prescription programme were husband and wife George, 80, and Fay Madden, 73, of Matua. Fay, who has had two knee replacements in the past year, says the programme had opened up a new world for her.

“It’s the best thing I’ve done.

As they say, you’re never too old,” says Fay, who now walks to the summit twice a week, while George settles for walking on the flat. “Before I started my goal was to walk around the Mount, let alone up it.”

Bethlehem College’s Beniece Douch and Alice Bain of Tauranga Girls’ College lost to Australia and Czech Republic and beat Japan on their way to the top 24, before falling to Thailand in the knock-out stages.

Beniece says she had the time of her life at the competitions, which were played in temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius.

“The whole trip – volleyball, weather and making new friends – was amazing. It was the best trip I have seriously ever been on.

“We trained with some of the best from all around the world – Canada, Brazil, Japan and Cyprus.”

The result represented the best finish at the event by a New Zealand pair since Rachel Morgan and Hannah Croad came ninth in 2007.

Beniece will travel to Thailand in September to represent New Zealand in U19 indoor volleyball, but only if she can raise the $4000 required.

She says she is in the process of finding a part-time job to fit around her studies, training and sending emails to everyone she knows in the hope of making another strong impression soon on the world stage.

Natural immunity from lemons The citrus season brings these yellow gems to our attention just when our bodies need it the most.

The ancient Egyptians used lemon juice as an antidote to poisons. We now know that lemons have a powerful effect with antiviral, antibacterial and immune boosting properties. So armed with my active manuka honey and fresh squeezed lemon, I hope to fight off this annoying new cough naturally. Let’s all embrace the abundant supply at present. The chances are you have or know someone with a lemon tree. There are thousands of recipes to use them, besides the winter lemon honey drinks, there is that simply sweet lemon honey for spreading on anything, you can preserve your lemons Moroccan style, or make fabulous zingy chutneys and relishes.

This week’s recipe uses lemons to good effect. It is an old trusted lemon syrup semolina cake or ravani.

Ravani is a popular cake throughout Turkey, Greece and Armenia and came to prominence during the Byzantine period.

Lemonlu Ravani Makes a 22cm cake Ingredients Cake 6 large eggs, separated 225 grams sugar 225 grams fine semolina 1 teaspoon baking powder Grated zest of 3 lemons 1 tablespoon lemon juice Syrup 350 gram sugar Peel of 2 lemons Split vanilla pod 750ml water Method Place the egg yolks in a large bowl. Add the sugar and beat until smooth and pale in colour.

Add the semolina, baking powder, and zest. Stir in the lemon juice.

In another bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff. Add the salt and whisk until the egg whites stand up in peaks.

Fold this gently into the semolina mixture. Pour into a pre-greased or baking paper lined 22cm cake tin and bake at 180 degree Celsius for 30-40 minutes or until golden.

Meanwhile prepare the syrup. Place all ingredients in saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Set aside to cool. Once the cake is cooked, remove from the oven and spoon some syrup over it. Use as much as can be easily be absorbed but don’t make it too soggy. Leave to cool then refrigerate.

Serve with or without cream, or extra nice with yoghurt.

Waikato University is doing ‘extremely well’ The University of Waikato’s 2012 financial year is going ‘extremely well’ according to its vice-chancellor, who attended the university’s annual stakeholder breakfast in Tauranga this week.

On Monday July 30, vice-chancellor professor Roy Crawford spoke to about 90 guests at Classic Flyers, outlining the university’s financial situation,

2011 highlights, enrolments and 2012 goals.

Last year marked the first time university revenue went higher than $224 million.

Roy says current domestic enrolment figures show the university has passed its proposed target for 2012 and in April celebrated its biggest graduation ceremony in Tauranga.

“In particular we are seeing a big increase in research activity in the Bay,” says Roy.

To folate or not to folate What’s really in our food?

The answer: not enough folic acid, according to a paediatrician at Tauranga Hospital.

Hugh Lee is in clear favour of compulsory fortification of all bread with folic acid, saying it would reduce the number of children born with spina bifida.

“It’s certainly something we support.”

This comes as the Government considers public submissions on its proposal to make the addition of folic acid to bread compulsory in a bid to lower the number of newborns with growth conditions such as spina bifida.

“It’s thought that of the total number of cases of spina bifida about two thirds are due to low folic acid levels in mothers having babies.”

The proposal has triggered controversy among health professionals – some of whom argue the added folate would dramatically increase the number of cancer cases each year.

But Hugh says such fears aren’t true and there is no chance of a folate overdose.

Tauranga August rainfalls 1898-2011

Rainfalls for the month of July have been recorded in Tauranga since 1898 (except for 1904, 1907, 1908, and 1909).

The graph shows the range of rainfalls from an extreme high of 274mm in 2010 to a low of only 17mm in 1914.

The second wettest July was 1916 when 263mm was recorded, and the second driest July was in 1982 when only 31mm fell. The long-term average rainfall for Tauranga for August is 124mm.

The graph of the July rainfall shows normal variations from year to year.

There is a small decrease in the overall August rainfalls during the last 50

years (1961-2010) from an average of 121mm, compared with an average of 133mm during the 50 years from 19111960. This is similar to the months of January, February, April, May, June and July over the same periods, which also show small decreases in the overall rainfalls during the last 100 years, compared with a small increase in the March rainfalls.

Since 1898, there have been 15 August months with a rainfall of 200mm or more (14 of which occurred during the period 1900 to 1976, and only one August month since then), but only two August months with a rainfalls of 40mm or less. For further information, Google “Dr John Maunder”.

“What we’re talking about is trying to bring the level of folate in the population up to a level that reduces the risk of spina bifida.

“Folate is a vitamin, we all should have it in our diets and what we’re talking about is not really any different than making sure that the diet our New Zealand population is eating is good for them and good for women having babies.” But a Tauranga baker has an entirely different idea.

Owner of Flaveur Breads in Mount Maunganui, Nick Parker, says he is strongly against the proposal.

“It’s completely unnecessary; it is absolutely frightening what goes into bread.”

Nick says if bread is made correctly it has ample folic acid in it.

“The reason there is no or very little folic acid in commercial breads is that it’s made with huge amounts of commercial yeast.

“Bread has been made for thousands of years using sourdough techniques and taking eight hours minimum; nowadays they do two batches in eight hours and the bread’s nutritionally void.

“Our best bread has flour, water and salt.

Why would you need to do anything different other than for commercial reasoning?”

Present government in possession of stolen goods Waitangi Treaty settlements are not Maori greed. In the case of local Maori the Government took 20 000 hectares of land between the Waimapu and Wairoa rivers without payment, and forced Maori to leave. In reply to D.Holm (July 27), that is massive injustice.

The Government that did this passed on the asset value of the land stolen down to the present day Government and taxpayers. The present Government is in possession of stolen goods. Treaty settlements recognise this.

Local Maori will receive a settlement of about $50 million for land worth now over $500 million. This is the very opposite of greed as claimed by Ray Jones and Margaret Hills (July 27).

The descendants of those original Maori landowners are with us now.

They deserve compensation for the inheritance they have lost.

To describe Maori descendants as watered down is meaningless. Nobody complains when watered down Pakeha descendants inherit a family farm.

Any descendants of an ancestor, Maori or Pakeha, are watered down, and entitled to inherit.

In reply to Margaret Hills, Wikipedia has a clear table of settlements taken from the Office of Treaty Settlements.

The total in 2008 was $950 million.

Settlements since then have been about $200 million. So the current total is $1.2 billion over 30 years, not $37 billion. This is a tiny fraction of Government spending.

People who claim that these official figures are understated because they do not include earnings from Treaty settlements are being ridiculous. Do they expect Maori to put their settlements under a mattress?

NZ a nation divided by apartheid When are the apathetic citizens of New Zealand going to wake up to Maori greed? By using false claims not mentioned in the Treaty of Waitangi, they have now acquired $37 billion in land, forestry, fishing rights, buildings and cash. They also claim to protest against Asset sales but in the same breath allege they should receive shares in the Mighty River and other state-owned power companies slated for partial privatisation under the Government`s “mixed ownership model”. many shares as they wish but the fact remains they did not design or build these large power companies so what rights do they have.? They are for the benefit of all New Zealanders We also pay for the use of water.

Maori are now blackmailing the Government and their constant demands are costing decent New Zealanders millions of dollars in litigation fees. We are now a nation divided by apartheid and need a strong Government to say “enough is enough! When the chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, Governor Hobson said: “He iw tahi tatou - We are now one people”! What a mockery that statement is today.

It seems only weeks ago that City Council stuck us with an extra $3m because we weren’t using enough water. In fact we were well below the targeted average usage. Now it seems that Councillor Faulkner isn’t happy with that, he wants to introduce a stepped tariff for water that he calls a “truly user pays system”. Well don’t bother Bill, we already have a truly user pays system, it’s called water metering. The more you use, the more you pay. For goodness sake, just produce enough good clean water the way you always have and collect water rates the way you always have. That’s one of Council’s core duties isn’t it? Why introduce weasely new charges that can be tinkered with all the time.

The other thing that was mentioned is charges for wastewater based on water meter readings. This was introduced in Auckland when they privatised the water and wastewater supply. Caused no end of trouble. Are we thinking of privatisation? No? Didn’t think so.

Must be a better way I note the projects manager, Tauranga City Council, Howard Severinsen reports the Christchurch Tsunami warning sirens may not have been heard for two reasons, one being that as this was a test the loudness would not have been at the level it would be if they were being used in an actual emergency. Pardon me; but why would anyone test any equipment intending to propose its use, at any level other than its best. The suggestion is ridiculous, as is the whole idea of the use of sirens – unless of the standard of the bombing warnings in the UK during World War II, 72 years ago. The effective technology was available then.

Pursuing the path of

a warning system based on sirens seems to be a waste of time and money.

Surely, with the massive advances made in communications, there must be a simpler and more direct way of setting up a Tsunami warning system. I hope someone in this field can enter into the debate. After all, we are already frequently subjected to at least three regular users of sirens as warning systems.

It is indeed a very sad situation, when an individual like Mr Jack Chivers can be ignored, a man who has given nearly 70 years service to St John as a volunteer, gave $200,000 to St John from his Super, bought a van for a service club $80.000 to carry club members, gave wonderful service to the kiddies at school as a lolly pop man and has now had a stroke.

The question where is his Knighthood? He did not try to get himself elected on a bunch of paid boards, he just did the decent thing. I have given the details to several MPs to do something, and nothing to my knowledge has been done for a giant of a man, and just an ordinary person. Does Mr Cullen have this man’s Knighthood?

Stop ‘free dinners’ from public purse Many of us feel that the incumbent members of council need to be replaced, but could be a pointless exercise.

Who do we replace them with, who do we know?

The candidate who takes the time to knock on my door will get my vote, right now no-one is knocking.

I know nothing about any of the incumbent councillors except a bunch of names and the incompetent way they have run us into debt yet carry on borrowing, which shows a lack of financial intelligence.

If a new lot are voted in, they are still going to get the exorbitant salaries, perks, cars, travel allowances and free dinners all from the public purse. Unless this is stopped no amount of new councillors will change anything.

“Civic dinners” which come from the public purse is a slap in the face for those who are barely able to feed their families yet contribute to feeding the well fed. If they want to wine and dine visitors let it come from their own pockets not the public.

It’s our money they so freely spend on themselves and unless this is stopped completely, nothing will change, no matter who is voted in. The public purse is being bled and it should be stemmed.

Council chambers is the place for discussions.

Ownership or kaitiaki As a proud New Zealander of European and Maori descent I consider myself to be very lucky to call Aotearoa my home.

However, it saddens me that many are still very negative about the intentions of Maori. I can only put this down to ignorance or maybe even the fear of a real bi-cultural nation but what I really hope is that it’s a lack of education.

And if this is the case then I hope we are getting better at educating future generations.

There are today, many, many, words that have become politically correct “buzz words” used to promote a particular cause. . “Gay” used to mean happy and carefree, but today it denotes something quite different. Words like, “ecological”, “sustainable”, “pollution” have all been extended far away from their original meaning and loaded with a strongly biased but very vague and emotional connotation.

“Human rights” is one such politically motivated and controlled expression. If we consider the matter of “rights” carefully it seems obvious that some-one or something must have conferred these “rights”. Who or what is this dispenser of “rights”?

In fact there is no such thing as an absolute “right” for any living thing. However, humans are social animals and tend to live in communities. These communities, over the whole field of human existence, have imposed rules on members so that the members can enjoy some aspects of life that the rule protects.

“You must not kill your neighbour” could illustrate this. Note that the imposition of the rule, then gives the neighbour the “right” to a life free of the fear of murder. The “right” is a benefit given by the community not some absolute thing conferred by some undisclosed authority.

New local delights ideal for driving It’s been a feast of local music recently at the Watusi Country Club and Fallout Shelter, and I’m finally going to get around to reviewing some of it.

Most recently it’s been the debut from Deeds, which is called The Evidence. After a dedicated few days on the ol’ stereo system it migrated to the car and I’ve been enjoying it there for a while now: it’s very good driving music.

And I don’t mean that in any negative way. I love Leonard Cohen, I love Gillian Welch, but both are crap driving music. Deeds, with their open honest classic rock/reggae sound, are great in the car.

Live gigs return

First though, a quick gig. One for all those folk on the Katikati side of town, the unfortunates living between here and there who have very few music venues within easy reach. The good news is that Browny’s Café and Bar, on the corner of the State Highway and Lockington Road, which has recently changed owners, is restarting live music.

This Saturday Chill Factor will be playing there. The band, now a five piece with the addition of Hammond player Dennis Grant, are the house band for the monthly Blues Jams at Driver’s Bar and play a mix of blues, R&B and rockabilly. This Saturday, August 4, they play at Browny’s from 6-9pm.

And back to Deeds (whom I keep wanting to call “The Deeds”, but there’s no “the” there)...

The first thing that strikes you about The Evidence is the cover. It’s one of those covers that makes me long for the old days of vinyl when you could actually see an image that was a decent size. This comes from artist Jamie Harkin and hints back at the days of prog-rock cover art, the sort of thing Yes might have used. It’s a painting of the Mount and the Mount beach, engulfed in flames, cracked by earthquakes, nuclear explosions blooming, and a tsunami about to engulf it all (carrying the body of the Rena).

It is simultaneously alarming and hilariously over the top; you can see more of Jamie’s artwork on his Facebook page.

The band themselves have been assembled by Damon Innes, singer/songwriter and primary musi-

cian. He runs the Mount Mellick jam nights on Tuesday and knows a lot of great musicians to call.

Here he unites with the rhythm section of Nick Ririnui (drums) and Adam Mani Sharplin (bass), with help on four tracks from Marcel Stannard’s guitar. There are brief keyboard appearances from Hani Totorewa (including some beautiful Hammond on ‘Doing What We’ve Always Done’) and Steve Dickinson. The rest is all Damo.

And very pleasant it is too. Damo has a sweet tenor lead voice and also sings great harmonises. MOR rock song ‘Stranded’, about the journey from playing in cover bands to being original, kicks things off and the album alternates between that style and various reggae grooves, from the slow-burn of ‘Doing What We’ve Always Done’ to the skanking ska of ‘Sweet Love’.

The latter ends with a long percussion outro, which possibly suffers from being too subtle in the mix.

In fact there’s a lot of subtle stuff slipped in, most effective being the layered guitars on ‘Don’t Kick Me’ which threaten to launch into a Kings of Leon style rave up but ultimately remain as atmosphere.

It’s only on hearing the humorously unfettered rant of a final track that you wonder whether some earlier songs may have been kept a little clean by the restrained production.

Political consumption

Lyrically things keep returning to current political themes of corporate greed and overconsumption of the world’s resources, though there are more personal songs too.

This is a solid first effort that highlights Damo’s catchy songwriting and fine voice. If occasionally it fails to catch the energy and excitement of the band live then it more than compensates with the solid musicianship of all involved. It’s certainly going to stay in my car awhile and will make good summer music for a drive round the Mount (before it is immolated in the cover art’s Armageddon).

They say “write what you know” and in this case the maxim holds truer than usual. Which may explain how 50/50 manages to so successfully walk the fine line necessary to make a comedy about terminal illness.

At 27, meticulous risk-adverse Adam (Gordon-Levitt) is diagnosed with a rare form of spinal cancer. The title is his odds of survival. It’s hard not to be impressed with filmmakers who can tackle such weighty topics with such intelligence and understatement, refusing to buckle to sentimentality while remaining focused on the characters’ humanity. 50/50 is a balancing act that succeeds brilliantly.

Casting a great rock ‘n’ roll shadow For those who can still recall the sixties, they will remember the original rock and roll band, The Shadows, with lead guitarist Hank B Marvin playing the very first Fender Stratocaster imported into Europe.

That guitar, with its distinctive Fiesta Red body, has become synonymous with The Shadows, in particular Hank Marvin. Wherever you go, guitarists emulating Hank play a red Stratocaster.

Now, tribute band Casting Shadows is pleased to be performing at the Bureta Park Motor Inn on Saturday, August 11 at 8pm and are inviting those interested in listening to some authentic Shadows music to attend.

All The Shadows well-known hits like Apache, Savage, Kontiki, Peacepipe and many more will be performed and are guaranteed to get feet tapping.

The Hamilton-based band ensures the sound is correct by playing the same instruments as those used

by The Shadows.

Casting Shadows have played at the Beach Hop and similar venues and received excellent reviews.

The band members have a long history with music and their respective instruments, although there were lengthy periods when they didn’t play.

Casting Shadows is a recent venture for all the members and they are hoping to continue as long as there are people enjoying listening to The Shadows.

More free law seminars added Following the success of Baywide Community Law Services’ first adult education programme at the Katikati Community Resource Centre, a further five sessions will be offered during Term 3 of 2012.

The first of these free law seminars is on Thursday August 9 and called “Family Law – care of children and relationship property”.

Lynda Frew, a solicitor from Baywide, and Gemma Barden, a solicitor from Waihi law firm Clark & Gay, will present information about family law, the Family Court process and legal aid.

In addition to the input of Clark & Gay at the Family Law seminar and Wills seminar (on September 20), Tauranga Citizens Advice Bureau will help present the “Consumer Law – your rights when buying goods and services” seminar on August 16 and Tauranga Budget Advisory Service will present “Debt management – how the law can help” on September 13.

The seminars are at the Katikati Community Resource Centre, 10-11am. After the presentation people are welcome to stay and ask Lynda questions in private as part of Baywide’s regular Katikati Thursday morning clinic.

Singers seek sweet sounding additions Passionate singers look no further

The Oriana Singers, a talented community choir with a 26-year history, are looking for new members to join the group ahead of its next concert in December.

The group performs twice annually, and has just presented its very successful Mid-winter Melodies concerts.

Janneke de Jong, 21, is the group’s new musical director and is busy putting together an exciting programme for the next concerts.

Janneke thinks her age brings a new feel to the group and hopes that will encourage younger singers to join.

“I am so thrilled to start directing. I am bringing some fresh energy with me… I hope they’re ready for it.”

The Oriana Singers sing a variety of music, including sacred songs, fun and challenging up-beat songs, show music and traditional melodies.

Janneke began singing when she was young and she hasn’t stopped. She completed her Bachelor of Music, majoring in composition, at Waikato University.

“I sang in the university choir, and that was an incredible challenge, as the musical direction was very professional and I had to learn the music very fast.

“But I think that’s the best way to learn, and it improved my singing and choir experience immensely.

“I encourage anyone who loves good music and loves to sing to join this choir.

“We will give you a warm welcome and I can assure you that singing in this choir will make you come alive.”

Young friends take to stage ‘Lo Madas’ of Otumoetai College.

Aspiring student performers will inhabit Baycourt on Wednesday, August 8, for ‘The Night is Young’.

The event, organised by the Young Friends of Baycourt – a group of students working with the Friends of Baycourt – aims at showcasing performing arts talent in schools.

The event is non-competitive and seen as a chance to get students into theatre, including fields like marketing and technical aspects.

Students from Tauranga Boys’ and Girls’, Otumoetai, Mount Maunganui, Aquinas and Bethlehem colleges and Te Puke High School will perform 15-minute contributions ranging from bands to musical theatre groups.

Where possible, the evening will be run and organised by the students.

In the original Greek text those three English words are represented by one Greek word, which comes from the same root word that is translated “perfected”.

In Hebrews 10:14 which says “For by a single offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified”. So, the precise meaning of the last words that Jesus declared on the cross: “It is finished”, refers to doing something perfectly. To put that another way, it speaks of that which is perfectly perfect and completely complete.

This means that Jesus accomplished all that His Father sent Him to do through His death and His resurrection and that He completed it perfectly and completely. Nothing needed to be added to what Jesus did and we better ensure that we do not try to take anything away from what He accomplished!

Paul tells us in Colossians 2:15 that “God disarmed the principalities and powers that were ranged against us and made a bold

display and public example of them, in triumphing over them in Him (Christ) and in it (the cross)”.

Jesus says in Matthew 28:18 “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me”. The context is delegating that authority to those who follow Him to go in that authority to “make disciples of all nations”.

So, we have the victory of the cross where God disarmed all principalities and powers through the finished, perfectly perfect and completely complete work of the cross. We also have the statement by Jesus that all authority in heaven and in earth has been given to Him, which means that the devil has none! That authority has been given to the church in our role as ambassadors for Christ – which means that the devil still has no authority – and he is still disarmed!

Jesus has ascended to the right hand of the Father in the heavenly places (the place of authority) but we are seated with Him in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6).

All of which means that we do not need to claim back what the devil has stolen – Jesus

did that on the cross. We do not have to overthrow principalities and powers – Jesus did that on the cross. We don’t have to fight to gain victory over the devil – Jesus did that on the cross. Scripture teaches that the war has already been won and we do not work towards victory or to gain victory! Instead, we function from victory – from the place of established victory in Christ, through the perfectly perfect, completely complete, finished work of the cross. This truth should change our understanding of intercession and of spiritual warfare.

Internationally recognised teacher Derek Prince once declared: Satan can never undo the defeat he received through the Cross but his cunning strategy is to keep Christians from realising what was accomplished there.

Thinking about conversion I was thinking a couple of weeks ago about the day, July 10 1967, when we changed to decimal currency.

Some of you who are older will remember that day and the lead up to it, the dollar man and the jingle about shillings and pence.

It was first mooted in 1959, there was an Act of Parliament in 1964 and the change came in 1967.

I was managing a retail bookshop at the time and we had to mark all our stock with dual currency and train our staff and change our cash registers to cope with the new decimal currency. Today we don’t give it another thought. It’s like we have always been in decimal currency and words like ‘tuppence’ and ‘half penny’ are no longer part

of our vocabulary. The time we changed over we called ‘conversion’ and the bible has something to say about that too. Not conversion from one currency to another but from following our own ways to following God’s ways. In Acts chapter nine there is the account of Paul’s conversion from being anti-God and all he and the new believers stood for to being one of the strongest advocates for the Christian faith. It was a 180 degree turn around.

And God today still looks for that type of change; from being against what God wants for each one of us to being a committed lifelong follower of Jesus Christ, doing what God wants us to do and living as God wants us to live.

For Paul this was a massive turn around and today God is still looking for that sort of turnaround from each of us. Have you decided to turn your life over to God and be a follower of Jesus?
