Lights, humming and the mothership Life is becoming unreasonable for some people. They’re finding out that you can’t keep women locked up in your basement. Worse, it turns out, you can’t keep them in the boot of your car either.

Then, society is demanding some to go to extreme lengths to care for their offspring, with completely ridiculous expectations – such as giving them breakfast. And lunch.

Next they’ll be outlawing even the simple pleasures, such as getting rowdy drunk downtown, breaking things and having a decent fight.

Here at RR headquarters we’ve had to entertain

Plus language that’s out of this world ourselves with the mundane – writing sympathy cards to Aaron Gilmore; a birthday card to the Queen, and a knighthood nomination for Tensing Norgay: the actual first man to climb Everest. We’ve also been busy visiting Horace in therapy, after his spooky encounter with strange lights and weird craft on Tauranga Harbour last week.

Plus, thanks to much feedback from astute readers, the mystery of Horace’s strange night encounter on the harbour, featured last week, may be solved.

He’s stopped shaking but has developed a stutter and is mumbling about the mothership beaming him up any day now.

For those of you who have not seen ‘The light’, get out of your cosy lounge, give Coro Street the flick and check out the beauty (and weirdness, occasionally) that happens at your back doorstep.

Many people have related similar experiences, including Ross – who reports while investigating a strange hum on a lady’s roof in Sherwood Street his Big Jim torch suddenly failed. He always suspected some sort of weirdness but says he’s been wary of speaking about it, in case people didn’t believe him.

Some readers are finger-pointing to the Navy, who have been known from time to time to run “exercises” around our coast. They were in the area last week, but details of their activities are sketchy and at time of print, hadn’t returned our calls. That tells me something…

It is quite likely the Navy are cruising around doing clandestine stuff along our coastline.

They have an important job to keep us safe, and I’ve seen first-hand how secretive the armed forces can be, when it suits them. And rightly so, when it comes to national security, although they might have met their match when confronted with a confused Horace on a dark night with a 16 inch filleting knife.

All the armed forces are bureaucratic brick walls when it comes to national security.

They conduct secret squirrel missions with all kinds of gadgets and don’t necessarily see the need to inform the general populace of their shenanigans. Our role in this is to keep happily paying.

Many years ago, on a far different tour of duty, I witnessed first-hand how even basic information can be “sanitised” for public consumption. Other theories abound. Among

the social media commentary is this astute observation from Hiria Rolleston, who says some unusual lights are waka ama canoes paddling at night in the exact spots reported last week.

“Pretty hard to see the full canoe at night.

They have either a single dome light on the ama and sometimes two extra led lights on the front and back of the hull. They are pretty stealthy at night. Classic read, though!”

Thanks Hiria, it probably explains some of those other sightings nearer town, but Horace has discounted waka ama.

The most revealing piece of information came from a caller, Rob, who says the strange shaped hull with the light was most likely him.

He says he was becalmed in the area in a small yacht, and tried to paddle it home with a nav light cluster on the mast top when he capsized.

A long story, but he believes the upturned hull with him standing by the centreboard may explain the oddly shaped vessel seen by Horace.

The eventual righting, with nav lights rising out of the water, may have appeared as a vertically rising light changing colour.

Horace agrees that this could explain some of the strange night’s occurrences – but not all.

As for the loss of electrical power, Horace says there’s a perfectly rational explanation for this.

“The alien mothership must have been hovering overhead and the massive electro-magnetic pulses zapped all electronics within miles. Or it was just coincidence, that my

motor controller burnt out at the exact moment my cellphone went inexplicably flat and Rob capsized his little yacht.”

Ewes are awesome

In other news, talent judge Stan Walker is embroiled in the tense atmosphere of the TV3 hit show, The X Factor.

The local lad has proven to be a top judge, but seems to have questionable racial bias. His constant harping about Maori content in the singing contest is wearing a bit thin with the home audience. If a white boy was lamenting the shortage of pakehas doing well, wouldn’t all hell break loose?

Stan’s also shown he’s a keen proponent of New Zealand agricultural performance.

How else do you explain his constant stating of: “Yous are awesome.” We’ve translated it for viewers at home: “Ewes are awesome.”

In fact the cringe comment needs to be enshrined permanently in Kiwi culture, alongside “nek minute” and “O for Orsum” and “always blow on the pie”.

Stan also maintains that “ewes are mean” and “ewes are wicked”.

This is where we believe Stanley is confused. At the risk of contradicting the singer’s vast knowledge of agriculture matters, we’d respectfully suggest he thinks “rams are mean”.

We base this on the fact that ewes are generally placid and docile; it was a ram that charged our uncle Tony and broke his leg.

Whatever, it would appear those perpetuating this bastardisation of the English language, (often the same people complaining about the apparent mispronunciation of other ethnic languages) are simply following like sheep.

Cargo Shed face off

Tauranga City Council is blowing the whistle on the Cargo Shed’s on-going dispute between lessee Creative Tauranga and the shed’s quayholders.

Council staff decided yesterday to get both parties to present their proposals for the future management of the shed on Dive Crescent at the Projects and Monitoring Committee meeting on Monday, June 10.

The decision follows a recent presentation by stallholder representatives, excluding Flux Coffee, to council requesting to lease the shed directly from council due to the inability to work effectively with Creative Tauranga.

Now both Creative Tauranga and stallholders will have 10 minutes to present their case to council, outlining their future visions including activities, experiences, potential customers and

what they expect to attract, opening hours, assistance required and promotion of the venue.

The proposals are required to align with the Cargo Shed’s current purpose - providing a creative arts venue open to the public. The term of the new agreement will be for 12 months period from July 1, 2013.

The committee will consider the issue of the preferred licensee for the Cargo Shed through an agenda item as part of the formal section of the meeting.

The struggle for control of the council owned shed erupted in April when the artisan tenants were given eviction notices, requiring them to be out by the end of May. They responded by taking the matter to the annual plan hearings where they proposed taking over the shed’s lease, and removing Creative Tauranga from the loop.

Stallholders wanted council

permission to remain in the shed for the month of June to allow them to formulate a plan for the shed, including a full projected cash-flow.

After the hearings Creative Tauranga again wrote to the tenants allowing them to remain until June 30, when the organisation’s current lease expires. But tenants rejected the letter saying the conditions are unacceptable.

They packed up in disgust over the “unethical, immoral, and aggressive” communications they say are coming from Creative Tauranga.

Creative Tauranga is a government and council funded organisation. City council communications manager Frank Begley says the rent Creative Tauranga pays on the Cargo Shed is somewhere between a ‘peppercorn’ and commercial rate. It is a rate designed to enable a community arts venue to operate.

Bowling on in Moore Park Katikati businesses and organisations are being asked to help keep young people in the area get off the streets by donating to the town’s skate bowl project.

which will include various street features including ledges, boxes, quarter pipes and a pyramid to make it more challenging.

The revamped park has been designed to cater for BMX, board and scooter riders and all abilities.

There are three levels of sponsorship available – gold ($500 donation), silver ($250) and bronze ($100). Funds for the first stage, which will triple the park’s size, have come from $50,000 grants from the Lottery Grants Board and Western Bay of Plenty District Council, and donations of $5000 from Katikati Community Board and $1000 from the Katikati Lions club. Katikati Skateboarding Club Incorporated has also raised $8500 with raffles, sausage sizzles, garage sales and events.

The project to revive the tired skate park in Moore Park has already raised $100,000 for the first stage, but 16-yearold organiser Jared Tinetti is keen to raise another $50,000 so a bowl can be added as part of work planned for October.

Jared says it makes sense to do everything at the same time, after work on the park was delayed from April. He is confident they will be able to raise the money, based on the earlier support some businesses showed the project.

He says the bowl would offer a different skating experience, with a chance to ‘catch more air’ compared to the technical, street style skating of the park area

Oceanside Family Chiropractic

Complaints from the residents about shade and debris issues, and the increasing level of maintenance required, will see council look into removing the trees, planted about 65 years ago.

One tree is located in front of number two, and two are in front of number 10, 2nd Ave. Council’s Tree Management Subcommittee will hear two separate requests on June 26 made by a 2nd Ave resident who will present the requests with photos of last month’s flooding.

The resident, who did not want his name published, would not go in-depth on the issues, claiming it will harm his chances of getting all council members to offer 100 per cent support for the removal of the trees.

“I have endured for almost 40 years the inconvenience of that tree. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful tree, but it is in the wrong place.”

He says the tree was once the size of a lemon tree and no harm to anyone, but as it continues to grow at six inches each year, a number of drainage and clean-up issues appear. “We have clogged drains from the leaves and seeds because they don’t break down. There are only two drains on the street and they both get blocked.

“I was standing in my garage with four inches of water during the last big floods and thought ‘This is it’.”

He claims council send an arborist to prune and maintain the trees, but only after he has cleaned up his own property of the debris.

A Tauranga on the Waterfront spokesperson welcomes the resident’s initiative saying cleaning of the trees’ debris is becoming a constant task and hassle for everyone.

“We are aware of the request and the tree is costly for everyone in the neighbourhood.”

She says when heavy rains hit the area, her top floor bedrooms are covered in debris and the lack of drainage means the cul-de-sac and front entrance of the hotel is constantly flooded.

Tauranga City Council arborist Richard Conning is aware of the concerns but admits it is not an easy fix to just remove the trees.

“There may be validity to what they are saying but our Vegetation Management Policy does not allow us to remove any trees just because they drop leaves or debris and produce shade.” Under the Vegetation Management Policy the three trees are not eligible for removal, but elected members are able to decide on the future of the trees at next month’s subcommittee meeting.

Feedback on the future of the trees should be directed to the City Arborist by June 4 by phoning 07 577 7000.

More than 150,000 weet-bix and 20,000 litres of milk have helped children at Merivale School perform better in class since the school’s breakfast programme was introduced five years ago.

Now, the primary school’s edible learning initiative can continue with ease following a nationwide $9.5million government injection into the KickStart Breakfast programme, announced by Prime Minister John Key this week.

This will see students at decile one to four schools receive breakfast, two weet-bix and milk, five days a week.

Alongside funding from various

organisations, Merivale School has run the programme for five years and principal Jan Tinetti says the benefits are remarkable.

“Academic progress has improved dramatically and behavioural incidences have decreased.”

Twenty two-litre milk bottles and 15 boxes of Weet-Bix are delivered to the decile one school each week, feeding as many as 75 children each day.

“If children arrive late and have not had breakfast, it is usually picked up by teachers and support staff, because those children don’t tend to be as settled as those who have had breakfast.”

Jan is thrilled with the announcement and says the programme will aid students nationwide. For Merivale School, it means the community is relieved of the pressure to

fund their current programme.

“Children need to be in the best position for learning and having a healthy breakfast ensures hunger doesn’t become a barrier to learning,” says Jan. On Tuesday, Mr Key announced the Government’s plan will put an extra 50 per cent, or $1.9million each year for five years, towards the KickStart Breakfast programme.

KickStart Breakfast is run as a community partnership, with Fonterra and Sanitarium providing the products and schools managing the breakfast.

The Government, Fonterra and Sanitarium made a five year commitment to boost the initiative, with plans to gradually make the programme available to all schools in need of the programme.

Kaimai death

Two Tauranga people charged after a string of events including the death of an 18-year-old Tauranga teenager in the lower Kaimais remain behind bars.

Thomas Kevin McDonald, 30, and Cheyanne McCausland, 23, appeared in Tauranga District Court on Monday where they were further remanded in custody until June 18.

The pair are charged with kidnapping, injuring with intent to injure, aggravated robbery and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle. McDonald is also charged with assault on a female and wilful damage.

The pair were arrested in South Auckland on April 3 allegedly in possession of a stolen vehicle that police say was used in a crime spree that involved kidnapping, aggravated robbery and the dumping of a teen’s body outside Matamata Hospital.

Tauranga teen Jovaan Graham died immediately after being struck by a Toyota Prado on State Highway 29 around 3am on April 3. Her body was found outside Pohlen Hospital in Matamata around 4am.

SWAT action on flooding

Waihi Beach residents are taking action against a “lack of council initiative” to stop continual flooding at the beachside township.

Residents will come together at a community meeting at Waihi Beach hall on Monday to discuss the flooding issues at the town.

The meeting is being led by the Waihi Beach Storm Water Action Team that believes the Western Bay of Plenty District Council is allowing the town to flood on regular occasions.

Boat lost at Plate Island

A 35foot motor sailor has been lost at Plate Island in the Bay of Plenty, the Maketu Volunteer Coastguard reports.

Coastguard president Shane Beech says Coastguard was called to rescue a couple on the boat around 8pm on Saturday evening.

The boat was on a delivery voyage from Picton to Thames when it struck trouble in bad weather.

The pair were removed from the boat and when they returned on Tuesday the boat was gone. It is believed to have hit a rock and sunk.

Driving bus changes Ted Petrie believes simple modifications to the city’s bus services in peak commute times would solve many traffic and parking issues loathed by Tauranga residents and get more people using public transport.

The Tauranga resident says too many people are driving their cars to work and Bay of Plenty Regional Council needs to improve services during commute times to encourage people onto buses.

This, he says, would reduce congestion in the early morn-

ing and evening, free up parking within the CBD and bring more shoppers into the city.

“We must improve the bus service and simplify fares to attract commuters… a halfhourly bus service is inadequate,” says Ted. “The streets around the CBD are full of all-day parkers and so shoppers go to the malls, and shopkeepers complain of a lack of customers.”

Ted’s suggested changes would cost almost nothing and can be immediate, he says.

These include spreading departure times out and speeding up entry by introducing a simple fare structure: $2 to the bridges and $3 to suburbs. Ted also suggests selling weekly passes at attractive fare prices to encourage regular use.

“Fares of $25 (suburbs) and $20 (inner city) for weekly tickets, with a regular advertising campaign, would attract regular commuters and casuals to lessen the sight of passing empty buses all day.

“We could get suburban drivers out of their cars and onto buses.”

BOPRC transport policy manager Garry Maloney says they continuously review bus services and implement appropriate changes to meet passengers’ needs, but says their statistics show most users are happy with the current system.

The Tauranga urban bus service recorded patronage of 1,605,500 for the 2010/11 year and 1,783,732 for the 2011/12 year.

While there are no immediate plans for more peak hour services, Garry says if more people used the bus they would look at increasing service numbers.

“We encourage the use of sustainable transport choices, not only because of the environmental impacts, but because less vehicles on the road mean less traffic congestion for everyone.

“We would expect to see our services expand to meet increased demand, which would include the services operating on a more frequent timetable.”

He says a real time information system is planned for Tauranga along with a regionwide electronic ticketing system.

“It is hoped that these systems will improve the customer experience of public transport.”

New roles for local police staff A restructure of Western Bay Police will see Te Puke senior sergeant Deirdre Lack take up a new role as sub-area response manager on July 1.

The new sub-area response manager role is one of three created in the Western Bay of Plenty as part of a staffing restructure.

Deirdre says someone will be based in Greerton to oversee Greerton and Katikati and another will look after Tauranga station.

As part of her new role, Deirdre will be looking after the Mount Maunganui, Papamoa and Te Puke areas.

She says the new role should be good and she just wants to get on and do it.

Former Mount Maunganui senior sergeant Joel Lamb has taken up an inspector’s position in Auckland.

“I’m not replacing Joel,” says Deirdre.

“They never replaced him because of the restructure we have been going through. There has just been a relieving person in there for the time being.

“My office is based at the Mount but I won’t be working out of there every day. I’ve still got Papamoa and Te Puke to look after and will be visiting those stations, volunteers and engaging the

The northbound lane of State Highway 2 between Papamoa and Te Puke was closed for half a day this week while an unladen logging trailer was removed. Police and InRoads closed the northbound lane of the highway in the vicinity of Poplar Lane from 9am-12.30pm on Wednesday.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the trailer unit became detached from the logging truck that was towing it and veered across the road and down a two metre bank.

Trustee education Talented Bay of Plenty youth aiming to earn a tertiary scholarship from The Bay of Plenty Education Trust have a new trustee to impress.

Opotoki District Council chief executive Aileen Lawrie has joined the trust following the retirement of Peter Patterson and John Mainland, who collectively served as trustees for 13 years.

The scholarship programme – which is focussed on supporting top students studying in the field of science, technology and emerging industries – has awarded 183 scholarships worth $757,500 during the past 13 years.

Fresh faces needed for centre

Students across the Bay will hear the devastating effects of drink driving direct from those still living with the consequences at Blue Light’s annual Anti Drink Driving Expo next week.

The hard-hitting expo, designed to deter youth from drink driving through emotional and real-life stories, will open to the public on Wednesday night from 6.45-9pm.

Organiser Wendy Nicholls says Year 11 students from every secondary school in the Western Bay will attend this year’s expo at Classic Flyers in Mount Maunganui and hear from guest speakers handpicked because of their emotional stories.

Tamati Paul was left with debilitating injuries after a drink driver crashed into the car he was travelling in.

“The driver died but Tamati lived,” says Wendy.

“He was about to represent New Zealand at the Olympics and join the police force. Now he can’t work, this is all he does.”

Another speaker caused the death of a woman when he drove drunk and crashed years ago. The victim’s husband will also speak of how this has affected him.

Along with the speakers, representatives from St John, police, fire services, funeral homes and insurance companies will answer questions at the expo.

Wendy says the event began five years ago – prompted by startling statistics showing 28 per cent of the region’s drink drivers were under 19 years old.

Since then, that statistic has dropped to 17 per cent – and Wendy believes the expo is definitely contributing to the drop.

“Feedback is really positive, a lot of people say they never gave thought to the consequences.”

She says it’s especially important for students to gain the courage to say no to friends or parents who may attempt to drink and drive, as well as making the right choice themselves.

The expo runs from Tuesday to Friday next week and the community is invited to attend on Wednesday night. See ad on page 46 for details.

Young fresh faces are sought for Aongatete Outdoor Education Centre’s committee to bring new ideas to the children’s facility and help save its future.

Committee member Iain Bibby says younger members are needed to revamp the centre as older members will be retiring.

“If we cannot find new members the board will be faced with two undesirable options: either hire a commercial operator, or shut down the facility.”

He says hiring an operator will almost certainly increase the user charges, which are probably the lowest in the Bay of Plenty.

Responsibilities are not demanding and include attending a monthly meeting in Katikati and coming up with ideas for children’s activities and events.

The centre was established in 1979 with the aim of fostering a love of the outdoors among youth – especially of the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park and Ranges – and to help them overcome physical challenges and develop new interests.

The centre is managed by the nonprofit board of Kaimai Outdoor Centre Incorporated.

Tauranga man Bruce Lysaght will join a mix of national champions, elite stars and first-timers tackling the event’s feature race: the 50km Australasian Multisport championships. But for Bruce, a director at Lysaght Consultants in Tauranga, the 9km paddle, 30km mountain bike and 11km run is another chance to embrace his passion and train for even bigger events later in the year.

“I just enjoy being fit and I think having events to aim for gives you an excuse to get out there and do it.

“I did Ironman Cairns the middle of last year and got a little bit sick of training, so I decided to have a summer doing fun things with the view to start training (now) – my aim for next year is to do Coast to Coast.”

Bruce is particularly looking forward to competing in what he describes as ‘outstanding’ scenery offered by Rotorua’s Redwoods and Lake Tikitapu.

“It’s an awesome track. I’ve had friends who have done it, and there will be quite a few good athletes, so it’ll be neat to be amongst them – or behind them probably.”

Race director Neil Gellatly hopes the third annual event will attract more than 1000 competitors to try one of the 10 listed events, ranging from a 2km under 10s fun run to a 50km team race.

Neil says people love the options offered and he warmly encourages whole families to take part and enjoy the day together.

Final registrations can be completed in Rotorua on Saturday.

Bruce will follow this weekend’s event with a round of challenges in the following weeks, before competing in the Motu Challenge in Opotiki in October.

often thought about giving up during the eight years she smoked – but she believes her success only came when she really wanted to do it.

“You really have to be ready to do it. You have to really want it,” says Heeni, who along with quitting for her son Tyrhys, was motivated because it would save money.

“It was costing me $20 a week, which was a lot on my budget.” She surprised herself by saving $2500 in her first year after giving up smoking – money she has spent on her family.

Along with setting her mind to stopping, Heeni got help from Quitline with nicotine patches to stop the craving and changed some of her habits to break the smoking pattern. Since stopping, Heni has inspired friends and workmates at Tauranga Hospital to do the same, and has replaced smoking with a healthier active lifestyle playing netball.

Heart Foundation Bay of Plenty heart health advocate Sandy Ritchie says giving up smoking would help many Tauranga families keep food on the table and stay ahead of the bills.

“For an average 10-a-day smoker, you’re looking at over $50 a week. That’s a kilo of mince, or a block of cheese and two litres of milk each day, or an extra tank of gas each week.”

Police pitching in Police are pitching in to help protect neglected and abused children by volunteering to undertake renovations on Tauranga’s Homes of Hope property.

A group of policemen recently answered a call from trustees for much-needed manpower to build a fence around the Greertonbased Homes of Hope house, which turns 10 this year.

The Homes of Hope trust provides shelter and protection for abused and neglected children from birth to 15 years old.

With the charity turning 10, co-founder Hilary Price says a renovation project is underway.

“Our homes are now 10 years

old and there is some upgrading to be done. We are giving it a facelift, putting in a childfriendly fence – it’s very exciting.

“It is a very meaningful partnership for us when we have volunteers getting involved in practical ways.”

Constable Matt Elliott, joined by detectives from Family Violence and Child Protection team, put in the hard yards and got 90 per cent of the fence constructed in a day, with the help of Carters, which supplied all of the materials.

Matt says they got wind the charity was looking for help and put a team together.

“They do a lot for neglected and abused children in the community, and this is something we can offer back to them.”

Foundation trustee Philip Holland put the call out on Facebook and was thrilled when police answered. He says the donated labour saved the charity $5000.

“It was just fantastic, like any charity it is difficult to get funding. It was really neat to see the police there, and the interaction with the children.”

The more than 123 children cared for by Homes of Hope may have experienced police in their homes for domestic violence, disorderly behaviour, and in some cases sexual assault.

Hilary says in many cases police are viewed in a negative light and this outside interaction is working towards changing certain stereotypes and creating positive relationships in the community.

Merging problems on Tauranga roads Merging like a zip is proving to be a problem for some Western Bay of Plenty drivers and police are warning people to take responsibility for their driving.

Earlier this month, police were called to two crashes in Te Puke where drivers failed to merge when two lanes become one at the end of the township.

Officer in charge of highway patrol, Sergeant Mike Owen says a lot of merging incidents are ‘near misses’ and are often not reported to police.

He says prevalent merge spots include State Highway 2 heading towards Bethlehem after the

Cambridge Rd/Waihi Rd over bridge.

“The messages around this are about drivers being mindful of where the lanes merge and not shooting up on the inside, or the outside, of other vehicles such as trucks, to try to get in front of them because they soon run out of room.

“This is a good example of when people need to take ownership/responsibility of their own driving behaviour because of the actions described above.

People need to be a little more patient and tolerant.”

Discovering items’ value Without a specialist’s assessment it can be difficult to separate sentiment from financial value when it comes to precious items.

A fundraising antiques and collectors road show in Kawerau this weekend will give visitors the answers while offering the perfect excuse to get away for the long weekend.

The road show, organised by the Eastern Bay of Plenty branch of the NZ Motor Caravan Association, offers a chance to dig out treasures and have them assessed and valued by a group of five specialists.

The event, the focal point of the inaugural Combined Central North Island Rally, will attract many motorhomes throughout the wider North Island with about 40 expected from the Western

Bay of Plenty. Money raised will go to the Eastern Bay of Plenty Hospice.

Organiser Ray Barton says is “huge interest” in the event with many people digging out their treasures and dusting off the china.

Te Puke motorhome enthusiast Ian Thorpe, the chairman of the motor caravan association’s central Bay of Plenty branch, is among those heading to the event to help out and have a few items assessed.

The rally is set to become an annual Queen’s Birthday event, rotating around the regions. Ian hopes to host the rally in the Western Bay soon.

The road show is at the Kawerau Town Hall, Islington St, Kawerau on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-3pm and an auction on Sunday from 3.30pm. Gold coin entry.

Medalist going for gold When Chanel Kavanagh first started judo lessons aged seven she was not a big fan of the martial art. Eleven years later the talented athlete is a passionate ambassador for the sport.

Kavanagh happy, she soon started to enjoy it and has not looked back.

“It’s been really good for me. It’s done a lot for my confidence,” says the Mount Maunganui College Year 13 student. Like her father, who is a Tauranga Judo Club instructor, Chanel believes everyone who takes up judo will benefit.

Kevin has coached for 23 years and is proud of Chanel’s achievements, commitment and discipline in sticking to a regimen of regular practice.

“As a parent it’s a great activity for them to be involved with, it’s a great healthy pursuit.”

Kevin believes judo is a great sport for all children to be involved in, saying he has often seen it help turn children around.

Chanel’s coach Tony Wannan expected Chanel to fight well in Cairns but she exceeded his expectations by winning silver in the senior division. Tony was also delighted with the performance of Tauranga- based Joy Williams, who also trains at the club and won bronze in the under 63kg category.

Tony believes they both have a good chance to earn enough points to compete at next year’s Glasgow Commonwealth Games, but Chanel is still deciding whether she will aim for selection.

Her main focus this year is earning her black belt and starting her early childhood teacher training next year.

In November Chanel is aiming to compete in Samoa at the Oceania Judo Union World Cup but this weekend her focus is closer to home: competing at the Waikato/BOP Area Judo Open Championships at Aquinas College’s Action Centre, where about 80 fighters from around the country will compete.

A colourful yet heartfelt message will lace its shoes up next weekend as Bay of Plenty residents get ready to ‘D-Feet’ the crippling Motor Neuron Disease.

Organised by Motor Neuron Disease Bay of Plenty, the association’s ‘Walk to D-Feet MND’ on Sunday, June 9 from 11am is the region’s first fundraising and awareness walk towards the disease, currently affecting 28 residents.

The walk from Memorial Park to The Strand and back (costing $5 without a shirt and $18 with a shirt) will be followed by a sausage sizzle and BYO picnic in Memorial Park.

Motor Neurone Disease is when nerve cells – neurones – controlling the muscles (enabling people to move, speak, breathe and

swallow) undergo degeneration and die.

Muscles gradually weaken and waste away, causing loss of limb mobility, speech difficulties, swallowing and breathing.

MND Bay of Plenty chairperson Jan Fraser-McKenzie says the walk looks to raise the awareness of the disease and the considerable strain it places on both the sufferer and their family.

“We have all lost someone close and loved to MND. We just hope it will raise the awareness of MND in the community as it’s still relatively unknown.”

She says the terminal disease, with no known cause or cure, is a “24/7 thing” for everyone involved.

Janet Hutchings, who founded the not-for-profit group 14 years ago after her husband Geoff Barton died from the disease, admits her husband’s suffering was

overwhelming.

The projected life expectancy following diagnosis for many people is one to three years.

“It’s not just the fact that they are going to die. It’s that they lose ability to speak and cuddle their loved ones.

“A lot of them lose their dignity when we have to look after them like a baby.”

The six committee members for the Bay, spanning from Opotiki to Waihi Beach, send out bi-monthly newsletters to about 90 people.

They also have fieldworkers across the region providing information, advocacy and emotional support ensuring people have access to the right health services at the right time.

These swimmers are big winners Liz van Welie Swim School was awarded the national Swim School Promotion Award for swim schools with 1000 pupils or less last week.

Owners Greg and Liz Cummings attended the 2013 New Zealand Swim Coaches and Teachers Conference in Queenstown and are thrilled with the win.

Sections of the old hockey turf up for grabs The call is going out to Western Bay of Plenty schools as Tauranga Hockey looks to gift the other half of its 10-year-old hockey turf to a second school.

One of the halves has been gifted to Katikati College but the second half is yet to be given away.

Tauranga Hockey general manager Clyde du Toit

is keen to donate the other 50x50 metre half turf to another school.

“We want it obviously to be used in the community. It was part of our community spirit and wanting to help other schools in the region to try and develop their hockey to a greater level.”

Clyde says the donation of the turf to Katikati College is fantastic for the growth of hockey.

“It’s an absolute pleasure and we’re really just excited that Katikati have got underway and that they will have a half field there. Hopefully that will lead to more kids playing hockey out in Katikati, which will result in more teams being in the competition.

“One of our main goals is to spread hockey, especially to the outer areas, and give them the ability to have a practice facility right where they are so they don’t have to travel.”

The old turf was uplifted in February. The new turf officially opened on April 2013.

The $1.4 million project is community funded, with $800,000 from TECT, plus $200,000 from Tauranga City Council and the remainder from individuals and organisations.

Colourful competition for rural schools Rural Bay of Plenty schools have been busy colouring themselves into a frenzy to celebrate Harcourts Realty’s 125th anniversary.

As part of celebrations, rural schools nationwide have been invited to help design the front cover, centre page and back cover of the Fieldays edition of the Harcourts Lifestyle and Rural Property magazine.

Harcourts rural and lifestyle consultant Alison Ross says rural consultants in the Bay of Plenty have been kept busy informing schools – including Maketu, Whakamaramara and Matapihi Schools – on the project and prizes up for grabs.

Entries closed last Friday, with the Te Puke Harcourts branch currently showcasing 33 dazzling and unique artworks.

The winners of each category (5 to 7-year-olds, 8-10 years and 11+ years) will be announced next week, while the People’s Choice will be revealed after voting at Fieldays on June 15. The winning school in each category will receive $2000 worth of goods from Noel Leeming.

“We have a number of entries and some of them are quite cute,” says Alison.

“The People’s Choice category will be displayed at the Harcourts stand at Fieldays, so it would be great if

Te Ranga School pupils with their colouring entries for the Fieldays edition of the Harcourts Lifestyle and Rural Property magazine. our local rural people could pop by the stand to put in their vote for the school they would like to win.”

Te Ranga School principal Gary Veysi says this has been a great opportunity to further the children’s education and get them thinking about their rural environment.

“It was actually quite a good competition which catered for the different levels of children.”

The three separate categories allowed the 93 children from Te Ranga let their imaginations run wild, with the 5 to 7-year-olds drawing farm scenes from today, 8-10 year olds researching farm life 100 years ago and those 11 years and older extending their imagination to future farming scenes.

“Even if we don’t win, the kids have got a lot out of it already, but it would be the icing on the cake.”

A national ‘de-sexy’ weekend KittyCat Fixers is holding its first annual appeal this weekend in a bid to increase the number of pets able to be desexed through the organisation’s support.

From June 1-3 volunteers will be collecting in Katikati, Brookfield New World, Gate Pa Shopping Centre, Fraser Cove, Papamoa, Te Puke and other areas nationwide. Founder Jan Cooper is seeking inspiration from larger charities, such

as the SPCA and Red Puppy Appeal, which hold annual appeals.

“I am calling it the National Desexy Weekend and all funds raised will go to KittyCat Fixers. It will obviously be really miniscule in scale compared to them, but I have to start somewhere.”

The dangers of night time pursuits Like running with scissors, chasing glow-in-the-dark toys can have serious side effects.

Flo discovered this recently, when chasing her glow-in-the-dark ball at a local park.

Uncle put the ball under a lamp for a minute or two, so it was glowing like a Chernobyl pitbull’s gonads by the time we got outside in the dark.

Then uncle hiffed it, in a huge sweeping arc that had air traffic controllers concerned.

Glowing through the air like a comet, it’s funny to watch the little light bouncing along the ground, until disappearing when a brown dog grabs it in her mouth. Then the glowing orb comes rocketing back along the ground, in little bounces, with a Labrador carrying it as fast as her four legs will go. Until… she either reaches uncle, or… worst case scenario, runs

into a solid object that cannot be seen in the dark.

Unfortunately for Flo, the object happened to be a very solid wooden post, a bollard in the park to keep cars off the grass.

Well, Mr Council Bollard Installer, you will be pleased to know they are also very effective at stopping young dogs, dead in their tracks, running at Mach3 and unable to really see where they are heading.

It’s just another theory that may explain the injury to Flo’s mouth, which the Mount Vet Hospital has been so caringly dealing with. It’s been slow progress for poor little Flo, but we are so thankful to Jorg and the team at 0800VETCALL for their wonderful attention.

In the meantime, all you keen retrievers, take care out there. If you are going to chase glow-in-the-dark things, make sure the obstacles are also glowing in the dark, or risk a nasty mishap.

BUILDING, BUYING & RENOVATING New Tauranga building for NZ First A fresh start with new offices is ahead for New Zealand First as the political party prepares to officially open its new offices on Cameron Road.

The political party has been looking for a new Tauranga base after Independent MP Brendan Horan took over

the former Rata Street base after being expelled from the political party last December.

The offices at 801 Cameron Road will officially open today and will be the interaction point for any local constituents. Open hours 9-5pm daily.

Ten years of insightful architecture Tauranga’s Insight Architecture has celebrated a milestone 10 years in the architectural design industry this month.

Directors Matt Hodson and Richard Hale say 10 years is a significant milestone for the award-winning Insight team, marked by a focused approach to client service and delivering value to its clients and projects.

Since 2003, Insight has grown from a two-staff business to one of the city’s largest architectural practices and has worked with more than 1000 clients from across New Zealand and Australia.

Advice repairing a blemish on the wall Let’s face it – blemishes, scrapes and scratches happen to most plasterboard walls at some point. Running down the hall, moving furniture or toys are some of the ways that scrapes or scratches can appear. But they’re not difficult to repair.

Here’s how:

To prepare the surface, remove any paint chips or loose plaster and sand around the area with 220 grit sandpaper.

Using a 75mm broadknife, apply a layer of stopping compound into the scratch, slightly overfilling the area.

Remove any excess lumps of compound before they dry – it’s way easier to do this now than to sand it off later.

Once dry, the stopping compound can be sanded nicely and then dusted off. If it’s a shallow crack, just one application of compound should be enough prior to painting.

Deeper cracks may require a second coat of plaster before sanding back, dusting and painting.

Now you’re ready to repair like a professional!

To build or buy?

Will you build or will you buy? It all comes down to what you want – but as I found out last year, getting what you want is not always straightforward.

I bought a house late last year and went through the whole exercise. We looked at building but any decent sections were not for sale at current market prices. Intensification means subdivision and the cost of subdivision consent fees and development was prohibitive. A builder explained that the building option now was only for the rich.

We looked at a few builders’ spec houses but extra costs like paths, landscaping and curtains were more expensive than we had expected. New residential developments are slow to move at the moment and as we have a 12 year old we preferred a developed area where she would be able to walk to school and socialise with her friends.

We decided to look at older houses.

House or bach?

Property titles throughout the Bay refer to the house as ‘house not a bach’. So many of the old houses were little fibrolite baches with clumsy extensions even in the good areas. Chilly bin special deals were totally scary. Solid boring brick homes seemed to be the world of old couples who were wanting up to $50,000 more than the properties were worth.

They were demanding the money back from their investment.

We wanted three bedrooms plus office and bought a six year old, three bedroom house at a price that I believed would allow me to add an extra room for an office. Of course we added another bedroom for the same money to improve the value of the house. We now have the house that we wanted but there few very important lessons in the exercise.

The house was six years old and we are the third owners. There was nothing wrong with the house but it did show evidence of people who had built and bought without doing their homework, not just on the house but also on the lifestyle they had expected.

We managed to get the materials, including the last half house bricks in the country. The addition itself was more than the $2000 per m2 and we are on target with the landscaping, stormwater drains, repainting and expect to have the work completed within a year. Even small renovations required proper engineering drawings for council consents. I had to do the paper work for the code of compliance, filing the plans and collecting memorandums of agreement from all of the subcontractors. Renovation is not a DIY industry anymore. You can forget about ‘do ups’ and a project for the next ten years.

Young home advice

My recommendation at the moment would to look first at houses under five years old. They still won’t be up to current specifications but they are unlikely to need any major work and will give you a couple of years to be able to settle down. Limit your personal

involvement to maintaining paint or landscaping. Anything else is a minefield for a home project. It was sad to find the number of houses up for sale by owners who had only been in their house for two to three years. These owners had bought houses and were unprepared for the lifestyle that came with the purchase.

Property ladder rubbish

The property ladder reason is rubbish. A house is a one rung ladder and is not an investment. It is worth the value of one house today and is still only one house in thirty years’ time.

The second house in your portfolio might make you some money. Make sure you have done your homework on the question of renting or buying first. When that is clear in your mind after serious research that has been shared with any significant other, only then start evaluating the second question, your options of building or buying.

Don’t just plan to live in a house.

The house has to be where you are willing to live.

If your decision is wrong and you have to sell up too soon it is very likely that the house will go and you will still be paying off the bank.

Bethlehem College’s 25th birthday bash Performances by former Bethlehem College students on the sports field and the stage are picked as highlights at the college’s 25 year anniversary celebrations in July.

College event manager Luisa Schroder hopes at least 500 people will take part in the anniversary weekend from July 5-7 which will celebrate 25 years of Christian education, and is encouraging people to register now.

A full calendar of events is planned for the celebration including a series of sports games between past and present teams.

Luisa says they have had so much interest in joining the former pupils rugby team that they will have two past teams play off as the curtain-raiser before the 1st XV’s Saturday game.

Past versus present games are also planned for netball, basketball, hockey, football, volleyball and a rowing race.

Other highlights are be the launch

of the book ‘Great futures: 25 years of Christian Education in Bethlehem’ written by former college promotions manager Jeanette Knudsen. The book traces the journey from planning the school and the work by 147 volunteers to build the first classrooms over three days, through to today.

Luisa is particularly looking forward to the anniversary concert on Saturday evening and a special church service on Sunday where founding principal Graham Preston will talk.

The concert will be headlined by 2005 former head girl Jessica Armstrong – now based in Melbourne - who last year performed in the professional musical Chess.

Luisa says the celebration is not just for the college community, but for everyone involved in all the education providers that run under the Christian Education Trust umbrella on and off the Bethlehem campus.

Mother of two jogging to save nephew’s life There may be many reasons why people choose to run marathons – but Papamoa woman Alison James’ reason is a special one.

On Sunday Alison is running the 27th annual Mount Joggers and Walkers Half Marathon to raise money for Leukaemia Foundation and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

She is doing it in support of her 12-year-old nephew who has recently undergone a stemcell transplant and has since not been attending school.

Her nephew Jon Barnes, who lives in Canada, was diagnosed with a pre-leukemic condition in November. It wasn’t until March this year that they found a stem-cell match and he was able to have the transplant.

Weirdness and the weekend in my world The weekend started off on Friday night with the Midnight Circus: the art, theatre, music and photography exhibition of frippery, finery and grotesque enchantments.

For me, the whole night was like being in a Fellini film and everything was a feast for the eyes. This included absolutely stunning art, up-beat swing gypsy music, awesome photography and women – one in

particular who appeared like some ethereal magic beauty then vanished.

On Saturday I was at the Tauranga extreme disc golf tournament at McLaren Falls. A few people who saw the disc golf being played by the 30 players that day commented on what an unusual sport it was. Then when I arrived home to find the landlord had cut the hedge back a lot, exposing my micro greenhouse to the raging stormy elements. Then, oddly a chicken was found dead with its head missing. Had Ozzie Osborne been around? Or was Gareth Morgan right about cats?

What does all that have to do with this week’s recipe? Well Mother Nature herself throws us some of the weirdest stuff and this week I am using up some horned melon that been an unusual feature of my fruit bowl for a month. I am almost sure this vegetable has been used as a prop in early Star Trek episodes. Its spikes and vivid colour and the green seeds inside make it look like alien food.

CHICKEN

Horned Melon Riata and Blackened Spiced Chicken For the Blackened Chicken 800g skinless boneless chicken thighs 2 Tbsp fennel seeds 2 Tbsp coriander seeds 1 Tbsp smoked paprika 1 Tbsp black pepper corns 1 tsp chilli powder 2-3 lime leaves 1Tbsp dried rosemary Zest of 2 lemons 1 Tbsp garlic salt

Serves four Method

Toast coriander and fennel seeds in a hot pan before crushing well in a mortar and pestle, add lime leaves, black peppercorns and dried rosemary, and smash everything to a reasonably fine powder. Add the garlic salt, lemon zest, smoked paprika and chilli powder.

Cut chicken thighs into even portions and lay out on a plastic bag. Sprinkle half of spice mixture over the chicken.

Place another plastic bag over the chicken and smash firmly with a rolling pin to force spices into the meat – but not too firmly as to tear the chicken. Turn meat over and repeat using up the remaining spices and place in the fridge for an hour. Meanwhile, scoop out the melons, keeping the pulp and add in the lime juice – also reserve the skins for containers. Put the yoghurt, coriander, mint For the Riata and red onion into a blender and blitz.

2 horned melons ½ finely chopped red onion Now stir in the reserved pulp and lime juice mix and chill. ¼ cup chopped coriander Sear off chicken in a hot pan then place in a moderate ¼ cup chopped mint oven (160-170 degrees Celsius) for 15 minutes or so until 1 cup thick Greek yoghurt chicken is ready.

2 tsp lime juice Serve with the riata in the melon shell and a drizzle of 3 Tbsp olive oil balsamic and olive oil shaken well and mixed with season1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar ing. Outer worldly and weird – but quite tasty.

Struggle cutting pumpkin?

Funky fresh face on the café scene Recaffeinate is the new face on Tauranga’s café scene and I had the lucky task of testing it out this week. Being an incredibly big fan of a café breakfast, I was going in with high expectations.

Let’s just say this – I wasn’t disappointed.

Opened three weeks ago, owner Delwyn Dyson has done an excellent job of creating a funky, warm, and colourful environment. On a cold brisk morning I settled in happily at a table by the window and fireplace with my friend Aimee. Despite a tempting cabinet stocked with tasty treats and a stunning looking chilli, chicken and camembert pizza, we went for the breakfast menu.

After being informed the cafe’s specialty is crepes (head chef Ernesto Morosini has professional crepe training) Aimee chose the berry option and I went for classic French toast – along with an order of cappuccinos.

Sipping hot coffees and chatting away, our food soon arrived – looking done up to the nines and smelling great.

Here’s my consensus: yum! The bacon was crispy,

the banana was perfectly cooked, the toast was just right – and the maple syrup was on the side so I could choose how much I wanted. After staring at her meal for a few minutes, going on about how pretty it looked, Aimee tucked into her professional crepes (which by the way, looked super thin and delicate). She tells me they are delicious and she’s impressed. Normally ‘a savoury girl’ in the morning, the crepes are not too sweet and the fresh fruit is refreshing, she says.

Bellies full, we browse the menu and the cabinet, taking note of the various gluten free options, savoury delights and I eye up the macadamia muesli for next time.

All in all, I can happily recommend popping into this café at 801 Cameron Rd for a scrumptious breakfast. Delwyn tells me they’re getting in a nice big table, perfect for business breakfast meetings.

“I like to think the café is a little bit of Melbourne in Tauranga,” she says.

I notice the snug couches down the back and remember to bring my book for a cosy coffee and a read. There is ample parking outside too, so seriously, come in and try it out. You won’t be disappointed.

With winter on its way, and the appeal growing for pumpkin soup among other warm pumpkin dishes – here’s a tip to make chopping that orange vegetable easier.

Place the pumpkin in a plastic bag and throw it hard against a concrete path. The pumpkin will split in half. Scoop out the seeds and discard, then cut the pumpkin into wedges, and trim off the skin.

Although ARRC’s Spay the Stray Cat Campaign’s core work is removing stray cats from the environment, there are times when they are able to help in other ways.

Tippy is an eight year old male: an outgoing, loving cat with character. A few months ago his elderly owner was urgently moved into care.

Land management officers are undertaking stream bank analysis in the Tauranga Harbour catchment area in the coming weeks.

Controlling stream bank erosion Preventing or controlling erosion is an important part of sustainable land management.

As weather becomes increasingly changeable and unpredictable, planning and prevention provide a more efficient and cost-effective option than clean-up and damage repair.

In the coming weeks land management officers from Bay of Plenty Regional Council are undertaking stream bank analysis in the Tauranga Harbour catchment area to identify problem areas.

They will then work with, and

partly fund, land owners to undertake preventative work including removal of vegetation and trees posing a risk of falling in to rivers, and replacing these with more suitable native vegetation.

Regional councillor Ian Noble says supporting landowners to undertake preventative erosion work is a priority for the regional council.

“Erosion is an on-going issue for land owners in the Tauranga Harbour catchment. The best management option is recognising the potential erosion risks and then undertaking preventative work specific to the site needs,” says Ian. “While there are no guarantees

with river and stream bank work, investing the time and resource now will help to minimise the cost of clean-up and damage that can occur during wild weather.”

Management techniques can be as simple as maintaining a mix of grasses and deep-rooted vegetation along riparian margins, maintaining healthy pasture on steep hill country to reduce bare ground and controlling run-off from drains and roads away from sensitive land, says Ian. Contact the regional council for advice, support, and in some cases financial assistance to manage your stream or river.

TiDA CEO Warwick Downing says the Metals New Zealand Innovator of the Year Award is an important recognition of the efforts they put into developing the technology and processes to manufacture items from metal powders.

TiDA’s research and prototyping facility opened alongside Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s Windermere campus three years ago.

The facility focuses mainly on the use of titanium which has the highest strength to weight ratio of all metals and is not corrosive, magnetic or toxic, making it ideal for many applications in medical, dental, aerospace, sporting goods and industrial products.

“We are pretty confident that we have carved out a space for us there and we are moving ahead quite nicely, we continue to grow and we’ve got a number of products to market.”

Warwick is particularly proud of a safety knife developed for Team New Zealand which the sailors can use to cut themselves free if caught in the rigging.

It is one of a growing number of products which TiDA advises companies on the design and manufacturing process.

“The next stage we are focussed on is we have brought in new technology and we are advancing further the 3D printing concept of metal and metal injection moulding.”

The growth in TiDA’s reputation is also attracting strong interest from international students wanting to be at the cutting edge of the technology, with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic offering the only training in the field in the southern hemisphere.

Polytechnic Applied Technology head of department Malcolm Hardy says there is strong interest in the powdered metallurgy specialisation offered in the two-year Diploma of Engineering course.

“It’s just starting to take off.

“We are expecting very big growth over the next two to three years.”

Exporting beyond the Bay Tauranga businesses are being given a run for their money in the latest battle for the Bay of Plenty export crown.

Export Bay of Plenty executive officer Angela Wallace says it is great to see a lot more exporting businesses from outside the Western Bay involved in the regional competition this year.

“It’s normally dominated almost exclusively by Tauranga businesses, but it’s great to see a lot more involved from Rotorua and the wider region this year.”

While Tauranga has the port, Angela says there are plenty of smart export operators throughout the Bay of Plenty.

The award finalists, just announced, include Rotorua’s Wairaiaki Institute of Technology and Tree Lab. Kawerau’s

Switchkites is a finalist in both emerging and innovation in export awards, while Whakatane’s Surtees Boats is also an emerging exporter finalist.

Tauranga rally enthusiast Wayne Moore is determined his 20th Nurburgring 24 hour race this month won’t be his last time at the iconic German event.

Tauranga motoring enthusiast Wayne Moore notched up his 20th Nurburgring 24 hour race this month and despite a mixed race, he is determined to return again next year.

Wayne described the race as ‘character building’, starting with a small crash before qualifying, then striking more trouble early into the race when an oil line blew and the car was sent into a downhill slide with Wanganui teammate Michael Eden behind the wheel.

After a ‘mammoth’ 90-minute effort by the crew, the car was eventually recovered from its resting spot in the forest and the team was back on track.

Rain and flooding later stopped racing for nine hours.

“Restart came at 8.30am on Sunday morning and my first drive finally arrived two hours later. The car was good, the track was drying but the end of the race was rapidly approaching with not a lot of time to make a difference.”

The four-member team, which also included seasoned Tauranga racer Maurice O’Reilly and Dane Neils Borum, finished sixth in class.

“I had the privilege to drive the last three laps and that’s always a humbling and emotive experience. And now with another finish and against big uphill odds, there’s plenty of unfinished business for 2014. Year 21!”

Peking to Paris team Steve Partridge and Corgi La Grouw, have foregone Steve’s American classic cars to drive a British Morris Oxford in the 12500km rally which began this week.

Overland adventure Over the years the Mount Maunganui builder and entrepreneur has bought and done up a handful of American cars but when it came to choosing a car for the 12500km Peking to Paris rally it was all about proven reliability.

“I went for the Morris Oxford this time for the leg room and for the height of the car going over water and the rough roads. As much as I love American cars, those Poms were practical,” says Steve.

On Tuesday Steve and driving partner Corgi La Grouw set off in their 1500cc 1958 Oxford from China’s capital in what he expects will be an exciting and interesting adventure. Over the rally’s 33 days they will drive through China, Mongolia, through Russia, Ukraine, then central Europe before arriving in Paris on June 29.

Steve, who has previously driven around Australia and motorcycled through Indonesia, had always wanted to do the Paris to Dhaka Rally but never got around to it.

In keeping with his determination to finish respectably, Steve has left no stone unturned in preparing the car for its adventure, working solidly on the car for eight months. Corgi, who bases himself out of the Mount, estimates the pair has spent “the price of a small house in Tokoroa” on the project.

Self-professed American car-nut Steve Partridge knows you can’t argue with history. It’s what prompted him to change flags and pick a British classic Morris Oxford for his latest adventure.

thing,” he says. “We took out the old bench seat and put old 1970s Mercedes Benz seats in it with Range Rover armrests so we could rest our arms.”

Other adjustments have included adding large water tanks and waterbags over the bonnet to help stop the Oxford overheating in the nine day trek through the Gobi Desert, where 30 per cent of the cars normally break down.

Each day the pair, who are sharing driving and co-driving duties, will be given a details of that day’s stage – which range from 380km up to 670km: distances they estimate could see them driving for up to 13 hours on poor desert roads. The rally, first held in 1907 was revived in 1997 as a classic and vintage event.

“It’s a rally, not a race. It’s from point A to B, every day you have a course you have to follow and you it could include a few points to stop off at along the way to get signed off at.

If you do it too fast you lose points, if you do it too slow you lose points.”

Steve was particularly looking forward to driving through the desert, expecting to be inspired by the extremities of the landscape where the mountains meet the desert.

Corgi, who got to know Steve as a fellow regular at Mount café Gusto, says the biggest test will be how they get on after 33 days on the road together.

“That will be the real test. I don’t spend the same amount of time with my wife at home and nor does he. But I think it’s one thing we can get our head around. He’s quite a character and I think we are going to have a lot of fun.” The pair, who describe themselves as chalk and cheese, will be regularly updating their adventures on their blog www.pekingtoparis2013.co.nz

Councillors view city’s flooding properties Elected members were joined by planning staff and stormwater staff on a tour of the city to view first hand some of the flooding hot spots plaguing residents in torrential downpours.

It’s even more complex an issue than we could imagine. Inadequate pipe sizes, residential infill, blocked cesspits, blocked grates, badly designed grates, not enough fall to outlet, high tides blocking outlets, badly designed driveways, excavated sections, and building below street level were just some of the causes of flooding we viewed.

Everyone in the building development industry – including various Councils – have contributed it seems. Creation of rules to solve one problem creates another problem.

For instance, the rules about boundary distances, daylighting and height allowances were supposed to make good living conditions for all residents. Unfortunately, this meant in some developments the developer couldn’t get the number of units required to make it a profitable venture so a simple answer was to excavate.

The rules say you can’t go up, but are silent on digging down. Then you have a potential pool area because the outdoor area is surrounded by concrete below street level.

So to stop the water pouring off the street you build a hump at the top of the driveway which then acts as a great spillway into the property once the street overflows due to the blocked cesspits, high tide etc. Plus, once trapped, the water can’t get away and has to be pumped.

Then Councils of yesteryear allowed houses to be built on overland flow paths for storm-

water run-off.

We visited one Otumoetai property built years ago and which floods regularly. The neighbour has now filled in the section behind effectively blocking the flow path, so in addition to a river running down the driveway during downpours over the years, there is now a lake formed at the bottom of the section where the garage is.

Council will be deliberating on solutions to the stormwater issue next week.

As the latest flooding occurred the day after submissions finished, a special round of late submissions will be heard on Wednesday at 1pm with five flooding victims scheduled to address Council. These will be representative and all elected members are aware of

the seriousness of the issue and hopefully recognise the priority that must be given to funding essential work – even if it means dropping off or delaying other planned projects. In my view the three waters – water, wastewater and stormwater are the first functions of a Council.

Everything else follows.

We received an email from Tauranga resident John Maunder about weather facts. Included was a summary of Tauranga’s rainfall during the past 120 years. There’s little change in the overall trend according to his records, although it doesn’t record intensity. In 1962 Tauranga received 2000mm of rain – normally it’s about 60 per cent of that. In 1914, 1915, 1916 just under 2000mm fell. In January 1912, 530mm was recorded and in January 2012 about 350mm fell. So there’s a flooding problem to which we (the human race) contributed significantly by removing natural soakage and replacing it with intensified building.

Interesting viewing

As an aside it was interesting viewing some of the older houses built around some of the low spots at the Mount. They were raised on their foundations but newer homes built adjoining them were on concrete floors on excavated ground level. Some of it was not very clever and a simple observation of the site should have alerted the building brains trust that flooding was at least a possibility. We got an entirely different perspective viewing from the extra height of the bus as opposed to a street level view.

A wide ranging discussion was had on Baycourt at a workshop to discuss options and its future purpose and function. No decisions, these will come through deliberations to the annual plan next week. Baycourt will be on at 1pm on Tuesday. This will include policy, funding and direction. We discussed options for its function, availability, subsidies and usage. I won’t elaborate here because it was an ideas discussion and staff will be bringing back an options report from which decisions can be made. Certainly with our population more than doubling since Baycourt was built there is increased pressure on its availability. We were told 40 per cent of its use was dance, 21 per cent music and 17 per cent musical theatre. 10 per cent of shows sold out, 18 per cent were 80 per cent sold out and 36 per cent less than 50 per cent sold out. The theatre seats about 600 people and ratepayers subsidise it to the tune of about $2million.

One obvious solution seems to be spreading out its availability over seven days by demand pricing. Prime time is Friday and Saturday nights. But I warned that by moving Baycourt out of Council we would lose Baycourt’s contribution to Council’s standing overhead costs which would require making up from an increased rate. So you stand to gain on one hand, but guaranteed to lose on the other. Watch this space.

Now the new residents wish to join the city reticulated water supply. Nothing wrong with that, you might say, as its only 77 properties. But they weren’t planned for. Mr Clarkson says he can build more than 2000 houses at Tauriko and he will provide the infrastructure required and build half of the houses with three bedrooms and double garage at under $300,000. That would be great provided he doesn’t leave the rest of the city’s ratepayers with a ticking time bomb of potential liability.

Struggling A third of Kiwis, particularly young adults and women, are unable to afford adequate heating this winter.

The Canstar Blue survey of 2060 electricity customers has found 36 per cent of people cannot afford to heat their homes. Of the 36 per cent, 45 per cent were from Generation Y and 41 per cent were women.

Canstar general manager Derek Bonnar says young people are more likely to face a chilly winter.

Enduring powers of attorney Keeping Kiwis Independant

What happens if someone loses the ability to make decisions for themselves?

Who decides where they live, what medical treatment they should have or not have and who looks after their money and other property? This is a problem usually associated with older people, but anyone, through accident or illness, could find themselves needing someone to look after their affairs.

It is commonly assumed that next of kin can take control in those circumstances, but that is not correct.

Simple things like filling in forms for benefits, operating bank accounts and giving signed consent to medical treatment become impossible without someone having the legal authority to do those things.

The answer is that everyone should appoint someone else to make those decisions for them by signing documents called Enduring Powers of Attorney. If Enduring Powers of Attorney are not in place when

a crisis occurs, the only option is for an application to be made to the Family Court to have someone appointed as the manager.

This is an expensive and time consuming at a time when there is a lot of other stress for the family.

Age Concern Tauranga is promoting an Enduring Powers of Attorney Awareness Week starting on June 14, with the support

of legal firms and trustee companies. Keep an eye out for that and if you don’t already have Enduring Powers of Attorney, make a decision to get them in place. There is a good guide to get you started at www. sorted.org.nz or call your lawyer or trust company.

The rest home celebrated the birthday this month with a party which was well attended by family and visitors to the rest home.

Located near Tauranga’s CBD with wonderful views of Tauranga Harbour, Aspen offers rest home care and carer support in a homely environment.

The building, originally Aspen Even Tide, was officially opened on April 23, 1983 by then Prime Minister Robert Muldoon.

It was then sold to Elder Care and subsequently taken over by the country’s largest rest home chain – Oceania, which renamed the building Aspen Rest Home.

Facility manager Olwyn Kunz says the rest home is named after the Aspen tree which used to stand at the intersection of Willow and McLean St. “It was a 146-year-old tree that dated back to the Battle of Gate Pa.” Olwyn says Aspen staff provide residents with care that reflects individuality and right to choice, respect and dignity.

The newest addition to the rest home

is the sensory room, which Olwyn says improves quality of life for residents.

The room, helping to calm residents who feel agitated, officially opened on March 7.

With a low turnover of staff, the rest home promises good quality care for all residents.

“Aspen has a really good reputation and fantastic staff. A lot of the staff have been here for many, many years,” says Olwyn.

Are footpaths a present threat to the elderly?

Footpaths have many users these days.

The young walk, run and whiz along on their scooters, skateboards or sometimes their bikes. Mothers push their prams or shepherd the little ones along the footpath. Older people walk unaided or with a stick or use a walker, those less mobile use a wheelchair, but the latest and increasingly popular is the mobility scooter. Who has the right of way? We all have a right to use the footpath but are

we tolerant and respectful to this wide range of users?

There is no licence or test to set out rules, there are no give way signs – who has the right of way? We all need to think about the issues and, where practical, give a warning that we are approaching. Have you had a close shave with a scooter or skateboard?

What about the mobility scooter that silently comes up behind you? Western Bay of Plenty and Age Concern are facilitating Mobility Club meetings for footpath users to talk about the issues, get some tips and solve problems (phone Age concern 07 578 2631).

What about the footpath itself?

Footpaths need to be wider now there are such a variety of users. Bollards by shop windows, trees, advertising signs, all restrict the useable space.

The Age Friendly City Strategy will be making this point. Meantime let’s share with good spirit.

Signs seniors may need assistance Q: I have noticed that my 82 year old mother does not have the strength and stamina she once did.

Nor does she have the mobility and dexterity she enjoyed in younger years. Are these signs that she shouldn’t be living alone and what other things should I be looking for?

A: Your mother may be experiencing what many individuals encounter as they age. However, depending on her situation, she could still manage very well at home, perhaps with a little help.

I encourage you to get your mother physically and mentally assessed by her GP. For yourself, you can observe your mother’s surroundings to see if it is indeed becoming more difficult for your mother to manage her home: Has food spoiled in the fridge?

Is she losing weight?

Is dust and grime accumulating?

Are there spills on the floor and rugs?

Are papers and magazines piling up?

Is her personal appearance and hygiene being neglected?

If you answer yes to any or all of these, your mother may in fact be having some trouble caring for her home and self. This does not mean that she needs to leave home necessarily.

Have an honest, concerned conversation with her. Assure her that you will make every effort to help her stay at home. However, also point out that she may only be able to stay at home with assistance. Having her assessed by Support Net may provide the exact care she needs to remain at home.

Alternatively a private organisation can assist with tasks that may be a challenge, while also encouraging her to do as much as she can for herself – thus maintaining the purpose she needs on a daily basis for her self-esteem and well-being.

It is important to have the conversation with your mother though so that she is fully involved in her destiny and therefore engaged in any change that may have to occur.

Armed police called to domestic

A domestic dispute in Mount Maunganui resulted in armed police being called to a couple’s address on Monday.

Police were called to an Oceanbeach Road house around 8.50am and cordoned off part of the road near Concord Avenue while they investigated.

Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier says armed police attended as a precaution.

A 23-year-old unemployed Mount Maunganui man was arrested and charged with assault following the incident.

Tax evader gets home detention

A Tauranga man who worked for a tax agent has been sentenced to six months’ home detention and 150 hours’ community work for tax evasion.

John Richard Cox appeared in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday. Cox was working for a tax agent between July 2008 and September 2009 when he falsified his clients’ spreadsheets by deleting their income details and filing false GST returns on behalf of their behalf without their knowledge.

Red light runners busted

Six fines were issued to people who ran red lights at the intersection of 15th Avenue and Cameron Road on Tuesday morning.

The intersection crackdown was part of a series of officer conducted checkpoints across the city.

Each motorist was ticketed $150 for running a red light.

Gas station crash traps woman

Tauranga Fire Brigade had to cut a woman from a car following a two car crash at the Z Energy service station on 11th Avenue on Tuesday.

Emergency services were called to the petrol station on Cameron Road around 11.15am where the female passenger of a vehicle was trapped following a collision with another car.

The woman sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Tauranga Hospital.

Cash-strapped councils are suckerpunched I was somewhat bemused to see the over-the-top push for funding the 150 Year Anniversary Celebrations of the Battle of Gate Pa with a full 2-page splurge in the media.

Like night follows day, up pops the big expenses list on behalf of yet another Charitable Trust (Pukehinahina) formed on 13 March 2013 (few details on file).

As I recall, total cost was to be $480,000 but looking at the TCC submission for funding, (the main commemoration is set to take place on 29 April 1864 – best of luck with that buddy!) interestingly the total cost now said to be $644,600 of which $475,000 is for further development to Gate Pa/Te Ranga sites.

The bulk of the rest of the cost is made up of carvings (20k) , monologues (15k), military capers(15k), administration, media (25k) strings /bands (12k), Te Papa breakfast(15k) Elms tea (5k) hakas/ blessings (22k) Sebel dinner (25k) totals about $170,000 ( somewhat less than sought from TCC ratepayers). Currently Gate Pa has a nice Village Green feel about it, paved, visual displays with someone’s interpretation of events.

Now PCT wish to embellish the sites and no doubt further rewriting of NZ history,is involved. TECT, TCC, Bay Regional, Western Bay Councils and Ministry of Culture must insist local iwi use funds they received from over-thetop, $50 million treaty settlements to undertake this aggrandizement.

Sleepwalking to quasi-apartheid When people can’t face reality, or are unable to support their position through either reasoned argument or hard evidence, they tend to cope by resorting to empty rhetoric, outright lies, or by citing spirituality; these strategies have been adopted by the Treatyists and Maori separatists, and Richard Matthews appears to be following suit.

Contrary to his accusation, “Twisting the Treaty” is a carefully researched and, for the most part, dispassionately presented set of papers (by the way, there is - by definition - no such thing as “negative propaganda”); the problem is that it says things that the Maori radicals and racists don’t want to hear.

Regrettably, successive administrations have pandered to them, by failing to challenge either the historical revisionism that is now part of our politically-correct culture, or the fanciful and avaricious tribal claims based on that distortion of the past.

The present National-led government has behaved appallingly in this respect, and its

capitulation to both flawed legal process and vested interest will go down in this nation’s annals of notoriety.

The fact remains that were it not for the arrival of Europeans, Maori would have faced worsening squalor and privation, and probable extinction through starvation, disease and cannibalistic internecine warfare; colonization saved them from themselves.

Virtually everything that they now enjoy and take for granted, from bread to books, cars, and even the clothes they wear, they owe to the maligned Pakeha. And still they portray themselves as victims, demanding ever more, on the basis of alleged injustice.

It follows that if we get a written constitution based on the Treaty, then we’re sunk, for the tribal elite will hold sway over our natural resources and, thereby, control the country’s economy. We are sleepwalking to a state of quasi-apartheid.

City’s long-term, serious drainage issues Recent reports highlight some flood prone areas around Tauranga including: - Matua, Downtown/industrial/residential areas in Mount, Arataki, Birch Ave etc. These are all long term serious drainage issues that are being generally ignored from the inception of the developments to now.

The biggest factor in these failures results from insufficient ratepayer’s money being spent regularly on repairs and improvements so multiplying the inadequacies, small issues become much bigger.

Meanwhile Councillors apparently went on a tour bus “tiki-tour” of the local flooded Everglades for some drive-by reconnaissance of affect areas but what will change anything?

Twisting Treaty and the constitution Richard Matthews’ hysterical letter dismissing the brilliant book “Twisting the Treaty” is typical bluster from someone who does not like being presented with true facts and figures. His assertion that the British intent was to dispossess the Maori “by stealthy illegal acts with no legal recourse for Maori” is ridiculous! Dispossess them of what?

The Treaty explicitly states that Maori keep their lands unless they wish to sell land via the Crown.

Maori were delighted to find they could do this and sold huge areas of land, sometimes the same land over and over again. As for Maori having no “legal recourse”, this statement is at odds with the fact that thanks to Chris Finlayson,

Maori have now been given no less than $36 billion in land, revenue, forests, fisheries etc etc. Many of the Claims made were highly questionable and would have been dismissed in a good Court of Law. Now we have the Maori Party trying to push through a written Constitution based on the

Treaty. Because the Taurangeans are a vociferous lot a meeting was arranged with hardly any publicity, at the smallest hall in the HistoricVillage. This was attended by about 300 people who, due to a lack of seating, had to stand or sit on the floor! Michael Cullen was obviously taken aback by the crowd and at times the meeting became very heated.

Cullen was a typical politician in that he never gave a straight answer to a straight question. People came away no wiser than when they arrived. If this goes through it will empower iwi to question our every action and law. We must stand up for our freedom and not be led down the path to apartheid.

Power to the people... no straight answers Constitutional review: Well done Tauranga you responded to the call on this serious issue!

I think Sir Michael Cullen was gobsmacked, as was I, of how many folks arrived to the Constitution review Tuesday meeting; a meeting that had no advertising, smallest hall they could find, early on a week day morning!

There must have been 300 folks crammed into that small hall! I think Sir Michael and his Constitutional panel were left in no doubt as to how we felt on the subject of Constitutional change!

We retirees [literally Grey Power hairdos] should never underestimate the power we have as a group of people if we choose to be united on an issue and at the moment there are so many serious issues facing us.

NZ is no longer Godzone and the majority only seem to be interested Money greed power to bad about respect or Christian values etc!

There are approx. 600,000 of us [retirees] in NZ set to rise to 1 million in the next year or so, a force to be reckoned with, which is more than any of these minority groups/Party’s etc so let’s not forget that!

Today’s forum at the Historic Village, arranged for the Constitutional Advisory Panel was fronted, only by the mealy-mouthed Michael Cullen who these days holds himself out to be a Constitutional conservative really left the audience none the wiser as to where this current Review is going. Over 300 people attended, by far the biggest CAP meeting encountered to date and lively would be a good description of the event.

Cullen did state that any change in the NZ Constitution would have to be by way of a binding referendum and didn’t think cross-party consensus would be possible because of the likely political backlash – still, he’s not in Parliament, is he so who knows !!

When the question was put to him ‘Does the Constitutional Advisory (Review) Panel believe that all New Zealand property rights, governance (including the Constitution) etc. should be based on race and ethnicity (racism) or based solely on New Zealand citizenship (democracy), he would not give a straight answer deflecting the question by effectively implying that this wasn’t the Panel’s brief or concern.

New Zealanders may have every reason to be afraid, very afraid as the saying goes!

I found it extremely interesting that after the killing of the English soldier, and when the Police arrived, one of which was, I believe a female officer, that when the Police were being charged at by the terrorists they shot the suspects in the legs. They needed them to live, to question.. Great job well done.

Why is it then when the NZ Police find it necessary to use firearms, they always shoot to kill. Hit the main body mass and not to bring them down and keep the perp alive? Are they such poor shots?

Do they panic, just a little? The bullet from a Glock 9mm can do a lot of damage and certainly knock the legs out from under a criminal, as proven both in London and in the USA. Perhaps if the Police were not investigated by their own there might be more caution in the ways of shooting .... Just a thought.

Questioning TrustPower benefits and cheque “People in Tauranga will no doubt be looking forward to receiving their Tect cheque in the next few months but is it really the benefit that most people believe?

I reviewed Trustpower’s charges after receiving my cheque last year. I compared with four other power companies.

All charged very different amounts for daily charge, 24hr and controlled and had different prompt payment discounts.

I took the charge rates and applied them to my latest bill at the time. I wasn’t entirely surprised at what I found as I had suspected all along that the Tect cheque was too good to be true.

Sure enough all four competitor power companies were around 20% cheaper than Trustpower.

What’s more they all amounted to within $5 of each other. For us it amounted to a saving of $1200+ per year. I have just checked again and although Trustpower have slightly improved they are still 16% more expensive than anyone else.

Stick to basics I entirely support Bill Faulkner’s call (Weekend Sun 24th May) that the Council during the upcoming Annual Plan deliberations makes some difficult decisions in regard to basic infrastructure issues, such as storm water.

It is entirely unacceptable that whilst we seem happy to be building waterfront playgrounds, new roundabouts, installing new footpaths in existing areas, replacing existing buildings with new buildings etc that people of this city are still flooding and suffering sewerage overflows due to substandard or inadequate infrastructure.

It’s time for this Council to concentrate on the basics and it’s not as if the area’s being most affected are necessarily new subdivisions but they are existing ones such as Matua and the Mount and this is just not acceptable.

Come on councillors and instead of procrastinating do something, provide the funding so that ratepayers are no longer affected, whenever we have heavy rainfall, as this is your duty ahead of all the nice to have items that you seem to be readily approving.

“The Electricity Authority Survey doesn’t support that [Duncan’s claims]. People get the TECT cheque and a lot of people don’t take that into account. “The stupidity with all this is at any one point in time there’s someone who is most expensive and someone who is the cheapest.”

He admits it may be the case with Duncan’s high power prices, but it is wrong to create generalisations based on one person’s accusations.

Spanner in the works It would be interesting to know just where they find the people who take part in these polls that TV One and TV Three have every so often.

All of them in the last while have shown National well out in front, and Key and company looking very smug about the situation (not that we ever see many others, but Key).

I will bet at the moment that they would not want to see a poll done in the Bay of Plenty.

With the arrival of the book “Twisting the Treaty” and its considerable take-up by the area, this account is going to have the effect of a spanner in the works.

And perhaps, when it really gets going, not just a spanner, but a seriously large crowbar.

Bobcat Goldthwait wasn’t a comedian I had any time for. But as a director he’s now made two of the most transgressive black comedies of recent years. World’s Greatest Dad (starring Robin Williams!) was jaw-droppingly subversive. Just as well virtually nobody saw it.

Now God Bless America blasts its way onto DVD, a wild rant at the dismal state of America and its popular culture. In it terminally ill Frank and perky sixteen-year-old Roxy embark on a gun-loving road trip, killing what they think of as the stupidest, cruellest and most repellent members of society. An hilarious and savage indictment of modern society.

THE SIGHTSEERS

After a bunch of support roles, most recently as the “cute scientist serving little function” in Iron Man 3, Rebecca Hall takes the lead in Lay The Favourite , based on Beth Raymer’s memoir of a small-town stripper finding luck and love in Las Vegas. She’s following her dream – to become a cocktail waitress! - a quest that leads her to Bruce Willis’ sports gambler. Despite her ditzy demeanour, Beth turns out to have quite the head for numbers. Director Stephen Frears keeps things light and leisurely; Katherine Zeta-Jones, Joshua Jackson and Vince Vaughan provide good support. It makes for an amiable ride, a nice girl’s laid-back adventures in the gambling trade.

Charlotte Rampling and Gabriel Byrne star in I, Anna : he’s a police detective, she’s Anna, a bit of a mystery, both are single and lonely. When their paths cross briefly at a crime scene Byrne becomes mildly obsessed and follows her until he can engineer a meeting. They hit it off, but Anna has secrets. This is classy English drama, a subtle pair of character studies with a slow-burning thriller lurking in the background.

The pace is fairly slow, giving the quiet desperation of Rampling’s performance plenty of space. Nicely done; not cheerful.

Black & White & Sex is an independent Australian feature with a distinctly uncinematic premise: a woman being interviewed. In real time. Oh, and it’s - as the title would suggest – in black and white (either for budgetry, artistic or symbolic reasons). The woman is a sex worker called Angie, being interviewed about sex by a film’s anonymous director. The film cuts between eight actresses portraying Angie, presumably to suggest different personality sides or to flag the “everywoman” nature of the profession. It looks good, is an acting showcase and intelligently raises a wide range of moral issues. It’d make a great play.

Dir: Ben Wheatley - Starring: Alive Lowe, Steve Oram, Director Ben Wheatley is one of the most interesting filmmakers to come out of England in the past decade. His 2009 debut Down Terrace was an alarming blend of kitchen sink drama and gangster violence. Think The Sopranos set on Coronation Street. Then came the brilliant Kill List, a film that slowly morphed from suburban drama to uneasy buddy movie before taking a frightening turn into Wicker Man territory.

Now comes The Sightseers, a black comedy a great subtlety and poise, both funny and disturbing and managing to get you to actually care about its weird central characters.

The set-up is simplicity itself: apparently bumbling Chris decides to take his girlfriend Tina on a camping holiday of Britain. And that’s exactly what they do. Unfortunately for the couple the various people they encounter along the way, whether at caravan parks or tourist spots, are a bit irritating. Very irritating in some cases. And the pair themselves have certain issues. Deaths ensue.

Coincidentally, this premise has similarities to God Bless America (reviewed below), but in a very English way.

There is so much that is good about this film.

The deadpan humour (among the “tourist attractions” they visit are a tram village and a pencil museum), the perfect performances, the (mostly) understated murders, but the best things are Chris and Tina themselves, played by the duo who wrote the screenplay. They are wonderful creations. You just wouldn’t want to meet them.

One immutable rule in life: Everything changes I love words. What would we do without them? And I can’t help but feel sorry for the ones that we abandon.

Things change. In fact everything is always changing, one of the immutable rules of life. If something doesn’t appear to be changing it’s probably just changing so slowly that we don’t notice it.

Words change too. What means one thing one day might mean a different thing the next. Or if not exactly the next day then possibly the next decade or next century. Take the word “nice”. These days it’s a vague and overused term for something that is pleasant. Back in the days of Shakespeare it meant

ignorant and foolish. No one quite knows what led to the change but it would certainly confuse Elizabethan time travellers.

Pretty’s become nicer

Another one from those days that seems to have become “nicer” over the years is “pretty”, which once meant cunning, sly or tricky. Probably an important thing to bear in mind when studying Chaucer.

Lots of words have different meanings today than they once had. Sad used to mean satisfied or content.

Sophisticated used to mean unnatural or contaminated. Egregious used to mean outstandingly good and now means exactly the opposite. The list goes on...

My favourite, which has only switched meanings in the last fifty years, is enormity. I blame World War Two. In its aftermath so many people spoke or wrote of “the enormity of Hitler’s crimes” that everyone assumed the word was something to do with the word enormous. Actually, no. As Websters helpfully points out, enormity refers specifically to an outrageous, improper, vicious or immoral act, an atrocity or monstrosity. That’s why it was used to talk about Hitler. It’s not the size that matters, it’s the wickedness.

But things change. Possibly because the correct word - enormousness – is such a mouthful, enormity has now, literally in the past half century, come to mean something of great size.

Then there’s the words that just get lost. They may be unique, they may be useful, but history just leaves them behind. Crapulous. I really like crapulous (as, again, did Shakespeare). It once meant to feel ill because of excessive eating or drinking. Good word and kinda useful. Gone. Another word of similar vintage was twattle which meant to gossip. Nothing wrong with that either but, somewhere along the line, people just forgot to use it.

But it’s not just forgetting to use words that leads to their disappearance. Sometimes, like so many things in life, they just get superseded by a better word. My favourites in these stakes are a pair of words – deasil and widdershins, which I think both came from old Gaelic. Both were essential words until someone went and

invented something that made them obsolete. I’m sure you can guess what the marvellous invention was when I tell you the words that replaced them: clockwise and anticlockwise. Not quite as poetic but certainly much more practical (but only after inventing clocks).

OK. That brief diversion lasted a bit longer than I expected. Let’s get on to some music.

Rotorua raging

The most fun that’s happening this weekend is actually just down the road at the Rotorua Blues Festival. It actually kicked off on Wednesday night but it really gets into gear over the long weekend. There are blues cruises on both Saturday and Sunday on the Lakeland Queen (two acts on board each sailing), a musical party in the street on Saturday and bands playing continuously at downtown venues (all within a couple of blocks) all weekend.

The headlining guest is Australian guitarist Jimi Hocking (who’s played with The Angels, The Screaming Jets and others) and the band Cadillac Walk are also over from Melbourne.

On the Kiwi front there’s Mike Garner, Brilleaux, B-Side Band, Ian Goodsman, EastSlide Blues, Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band, and much more. Lots of this is free. Check it out at www.bobblues.com/bluesfest.

Mount RSA meets The Mermaids

Something a little different and quirky is coming to Tauranga Mount RSA next month.

Straying from their normal tribute bands, staff at the RSA have welcomed The Mermaids show to perform at the club on June 29.

As one of the country’s most established and esteemed covers band, The Mermaids have been delivering party repertoire since 1998 with their mix of high energy dance music from 1970 to now.

The band features three vocalists: Pauline Berry, Joe Cotton and Tammy D’Ath, who promise glamorous costumes coupled with fun and spontaneous onstage personalities.

Warm invite for a chilly afternoon It’s getting chilly outside, but the Oriana Singers are back with a warm programme to sing away any winter blues.

Peter Cranson is a guest artist at Oriana Singers’ Midwinter Melodies.

The talented group of singers, led by musical director Janneke de Jong, warmly invite people to step out of the cold and enjoy their Midwinter Melodies concerts next weekend.

The Oriana Singers perform twice annually, drawing in audiences to their midwinter and Christmas shows, and have been blossoming under the direction of Janneke, who joined them midway through 2012.

Next weekend’s performances will feature guest artists Peter Cranson on cornet/trumpet and accompanist Keith Bowen.

Engaging his love of music since a child, Peter has been playing a brass instrument for more than 56 years. From playing in his school orchestra and smaller ensembles, he went on to become principal cornet in the Palmerston North Salvation Army Band, Tauranga City Silver Band, and now Tauranga Brass.

He has played in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and Switzerland and won a number of solo events in regional and national contests.

For now, Peter calls St Andrew’s Church in Mount Maunganui home – playing trumpet, cornet and the flugel horn.

Keith has had a lifetime of involvement in choir and church music.

Settle in with Midwinter Melodies on Saturday, June 8 at St Andrew’s Church at 2pm and Sunday, June 9 at St John’s Church at 2pm.

On Wednesday this week it was 70 years to the day when an executive was elected to help returned servicemen and organise a club for them.

Mount RSA general manager Peter Moss says they chose The Mermaids to celebrate the 70 year anniversary because of the great reports they had heard about the show.

“We thought we’d have something a little bit different.

“We thought this would make a real change, and one of our managing team saw them on New Year’s Eve a couple of years ago and really enjoyed them,” he says.

“They should be really good.”

The Mermaids perform at 7.30pm at the Mount RSA on June 29. Tickets are $10 for members or $15

World-class line-up for next hospice concert Top New Zealand singer Tim Beveridge will headline Waipuna Hospice’s ‘Music of the Night’ fundraising concert next month.

Dubbed one of the country’s finest singers, performing in concerts nationwide and internationally, Tim is one of the many world-class performers singing the ‘very special event’ at Holy Trinity Church.

He has also made the finals of the BBC’s Voice of Musical Theatre twice and performed in many prestigious productions, including Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Jesus Christ Superstar, Sunset Boulevard and Evita.

‘Music of the Night’, on Saturday, July 20, also features soprano Julia Booth; a Sir

Edmund Hillary scholar who completed a Master of Music at the University of Waikato where she was awarded the Wallace Corporation’s Performer of the Year Blues Award and the prestigious Hillary Medal.

Julia has performed with the NZ Symphony Orchestra, Wellington Vector Orchestra and Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra.

Also performing is Jessie Hillel, who after winning the country’s heart as the runnerup of New Zealand’s Got Talent last year, will perform in Tauranga for the first time.

Her NZ’s Got Talent placing led to Jessie being invited to China to represent NZ at the International Children’s Concert.

She has previously appeared at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Los

Angeles, winning multiple categories.

Jessie has just released her debut album ‘With Love’.

Japanese Zen inspires new exhibition Tauranga artist Steven Allan’s new sculptures capture the essence of Bonsai craftsmanship – but with a difference.

His trees are crafted in copper wire.

Steve’s work features in the latest exhibition at Lightwave Gallery from June 8-30 and residents are invited to chat with Steve on Sunday, June 9 from 12-3pm.

Gallery director Ken Wright says the exhibition features a miniature Japanese Zen garden, containing a number of subjective artistic features involving minimalism and the aesthetics of rugged beauty.

He says the Japanese garden is considered to be an idealised view of nature, but carried out in miniature.

Lunch with a justice theme this June June’s free Law for Lunch seminars have the theme of justice.

This is the first time Baywide Community Law Service has developed a Law for Lunch programme around a theme. Past seminars have dealt with the legal areas that Baywide clients most often seek help with, including employment, family, wills and consumer issues.

The free lunch-time seminars on each Wednesday in June will provide an introduction to restorative justice, the Disputes Tribunal, mediation and the Department of Labour employment mediation service.

The Disputes Tribunal is managed through the district court but is much less expensive, formal and legalistic than a court. The Disputes Tribunal can deal with a wide range of legal claims up to the value of $15,000 (or $20,000 if both parties agree) including arguments between neighbours, and complaints about goods or services. As a general rule lawyers are not allowed to appear at the Disputes Tribunal.

Lawyers can appear at Department of Labour mediations but a trained independent mediator will ensure that a fair mediation process. Mediation allows the parties to discuss their concerns in a neutral controlled environment with a mediator to help the parties reach a solution. The mediator does not impose a decision.

Baywide is delighted that Tauranga’s resident Department of Labour mediator, Steve Penn, is presenting on how to get the best results from the employment mediation service.

These seminars provide a great resource for people currently preparing to use any of these processes but also an opportunity for any potential future users.

Just horsing around When it comes to helping out, Tauranga mother and daughter Pip and Lily Kwiecien don’t just horse around.

The pair will be presented with this year’s Tauranga Riding for the Disabled Volunteer of the Year award on Saturday, June 2.

Usually the trophy is awarded to one person, but this year Tauranga RDA felt both Pip and Lily deserved trophy recognition.

Pip says it was her daughter’s passion for volunteering at the RDA which inspired her to help out too.

“It’s pretty cool that we have both been awarded the trophy but she does most of the work.”

Lily began helping out on the weekends when she was 10 years old. Five years on, she can’t get enough.

Tauranga RDA chief executive officer Kat Macmillan is delighted to award the trophy for the second year running and says she would be lost without the pair.

“I don’t know what we’d do without Pip and Lily. It’s people like this that are the backbone of our organisation.

Always when we are in need of an extra pair of hands, these two step forwards and put their hands up. I can’t thank them enough.”

Little Blue Penguins at risk on our beaches Staff at ARRC Wildlife Centre are concerned with the number of little blue penguins being injured or killed by dogs on Tauranga beaches.

Co-ordinator Sue Mackey says their vet team frequently attend to wildlife injured due to dog attacks on local beaches.

Penguins are the most commonly affected species, often brought in hypothermic and collapsed with bite wounds, she says.

“It is very difficult to resuscitate these birds and unfortunately many of them end up dying.

“Those few that pull through often make excellent recoveries and are fully rehabilitated back into the wild thanks to the fabulous care of our volunteers, especially Chrissy Jefferson of Oropi Native Bird Rescue Haven.”

ARRC staff are asking dog owners to be careful with their dogs and keep them supervised and on leads – especially on beaches near Mount Maunganui, where little blue penguins are most common.

A remarkable man Alpha growing rapidly A young man returned home from overseas, despondent and depressed.

He felt himself to be in need of what he had tried to offer others: “I went to convert the natives, but oh, who will convert me?” he despaired. His name?

It was John Wesley.

His two years as a missionary in the distant colony of Georgia were a disaster and ended with a sense of failure.

A few months later, Wesley went unwillingly to a meeting where his heart was “strangely warmed”.

Here he felt an assurance of God’s love, acceptance and forgiveness that

revolutionised his life and ministry.

Every year, Methodists remember this remarkable man on Wesley Day, 24 May, the anniversary of this event.

Alpha in the Bay of Plenty is growing rapidly.

Many people feel uneasy because they are unsure as to what is true, especially about God. Here is your chance to investigate God without anyone preaching at you. Honesty is always the best policy but firstly we need to be honest with ourselves.

People who attend the Alpha course often make the comments like: “I never knew what God was about.”

“Why didn’t someone tell me about this before?” “It is so good it is almost unbelievable.” “My parents sent me to Sunday school but that dropped off when I became a teenager.”

“Where have I been all these years?”

Most of us do a good job of criticising others.

Likewise, it is easy to have negative view about God without knowing really knowing what He is like. At Alpha you are welcome to bring your genuine questions. For instance: “Why is there so much evil around us? Where do moral ethics come from? Why should it matter? What about suffering? Who is this Jesus?”

The best thing is that Alpha is very open and your opinion counts. Where else can you attend a course where you have your say rather than just being lectured?

The format of the 10-week course is: a meal, a DVD presentation and then an informal and relaxed group discussion over coffee. There is no cost but you can make a small donation to cover the meal cost if you wish.

The hardest thing

The hardest thing for Christians to accept is that they are totally forgiven of all past, present, and future sins because of what Jesus purchased for us at the cross.

If you live in fear whether or not you have sinned today, you will never walk in victory; in fact you will be disempowered when you are sin-conscious and not God- conscious (conscious of His Goodness).

Yes, of course, sin has consequences, I don’t deny that.

The receiving of Jesus as your saviour automatically wipes away the sins, the only sin that gets you to hell is the rejection of Him. The 10 commandments were instituted by God to show people they needed a saviour because they were impossible to keep, anyway they have been superseded by the New Testament.

A simple command: ‘love your neighbour as you do yourself ’. Everything in the Old Testament has to go through the cross to see what Jesus has done for us, e.g. in the Old, sacrifice of animals was done to cover their sins, in the New Jesus was our sacrifice, not to cover but obliterate our sins. Same as generational curses, they were also taken care of (unless you want to keep them) at the cross.

You are a new creation.

Let’s understand that it is not how good you are but how good He is; if you can grasp this, you will see His grace and mercy and won’t want to sin.

You notice when people live under the law they end up with wacko doctrine and cults, like don’t smoke, don’t eat meat, don’t eat with sinners, cut yourself off from your family, don’t wear make-up‌ the list goes on and on. It should be the gospel of don’ts. None of this will make you righteous, just worn out and a miserable lemon-sucking Christian.

Many Christians still believe God makes them sick if they sin – ignorance gone to seed, healing is a free gift from God. If you don’t agree with me, no problem, I respect your views to be sick, broke and living in defeat.

Ripping good fun Western Bay of Plenty schools ripped into work on the rugby field on Wednesday battling it out for rugby supremacy in the WBOP Rippa Rugby World Cup at Mount Maunganui.

More than 600 children from 32 schools took part, sporting various national colours.

Disco sees a personal goal achieved This month’s recipient for Mobility Equipment & Services’ Special Achievers Award is Shelley Maffey.

Shelley, who attends Arohanui Wilrose Centre, is celebrating after achieving a personal goal by organising a fundraising disco recently at the centre. The 1960s themed disco was

a great success and raised more than $500 in cash and pet food donations for Tauranga SPCA. Shelley is pictured receiving her award from Mobility Equipment & Services administration officer Colleen Gordon.
