Forget about league tables and Education Review Office reports. Principals from 33 schools around the Western Bay – including Robert Mangan from Tauranga Boys’ College and Pauline Cowens from Tauranga Girls’ (pictured) - will go head to head around Baypark Speedway on Saturday night to sort out which truly is the
best school – for mini stock racing. Speedway manager Roger Bailey says the inaugural SunLive Principals’ Challenge is shaping up to be a great night, with a fiercely competitive spirit developing between the principals. “We’ve had lots of interest, quickly filling our quota of cars with willing participants and
even had to turn some principals away. “With entire school reputations at stake, schools and the wider community has got right behind it and we definitely plan to make it an annual event. The event, being held with a Speedway programme including the Top Half Super Saloon Championship and round two of the LaZBoy
Saloon Car series, doubles as a fundraiser for local schools – with hopes to raise about $7000. Among those supporting the event is Crockford Real Estate owner Leigh Crockford, who has kick-started the fundraising with a $1000 donation to go to a school drawn on the night.
