Twerking, huffing, posting and botching This week’s column is a bit short.

Our office twerking lessons have been running overtime, impacting on the available rabbiting and rogering opportunities.

The hardest part about successful twerking at the office is keeping a straight face. As my coach says, there will be no smirking while you’re twerking while you’re working.

For those of you not fashionable enough to have discovered twerking, it’s a kind of dance move that involves, basically, a lot of shaking of some well-toned rear cheeks. Although there’s a rumour David Cunliffe can do it with his front cheeks.

Also be aware that if you’re white, you are not considered a desirable twerker. A TV report this week confirmed what we’ve always suspected: Twerks are best left in the domain of large-booty black American women. Apparently you can say this on television and not be considered racist. I’m assuming therefore I can write it in a column and not be judged racist either, but then, there’s always another standard for white, middle-aged, heterosexual tax-paying males.

The message for the great majority of us with pasty white, uncool backsides: Stick to planking.

And speaking of quivering backsides, Grant Robertson is putting his on the line along with a bunch of other hopefuls, seeking the leadership of the Labour Party.

This will be interesting …oh no, hang on, it’s not. We don’t really care. So let’s get back to other news…

Twerk ’n sniff

We’ve found that twerking goes a lot better after a sniff or two of butane. In the news this week it was reported that the attempts of up to half of those trying

butane inhalation (known as ‘huffing’) result in death.

That explains the fate of the misguided and ineffectual Mr Huff – a Tauranga city figment of someone’s imagination – who succumbed to inhalation of his own propaganda a few years ago.

The fresh warnings about the dangers of huffing caught us by surprise. I nearly dropped my canister when I heard it. Since when has it been dangerous to inhale volatile hydrocarbons into our lungs to poison our bloodstream and fry our brains, ending in death for every second person who tries it? Who would have thought! Next they’ll be trying to tell us car surfing and milk products derived from whey are dangerous.

We have a simple message here: Please don’t do it. We need enough gas left to make a cup of tea in the morning. I’ve always said camping is dangerous. All those sharp ground pegs and guy wires to trip on; wild animals and now, poison lurking among the cooking utensils.

Safer communities together.

Get a motel.

Botulism botch up

Meanwhile, some of our family was rumoured to have botulism this week.

The whole house was quarantined and our street cred rated nil in the neighbourhood. Then it turned out, it was just a head cold.

In other news: A slightly surprised postal union bloke was discussing the looming job losses in the mail service.

The postal union man says it’s very hard

for employees to comprehend the cutbacks.

Huh? How could you seriously not see this coming?

How could anyone working in the snail mail industry not possibly anticipate that the relentless onslaught of email, and before that, the facsimile machine, not be a threat to your job?

Even the social media diseases of twitface and twatbook are clearly taking the place of the prehistoric industry of writing a letter, sealing an envelope, licking a stamp and physically sending it, with up to a week or more delivery time.

Mr union man, you cannot seriously tell us that posties and postal workers had no idea there would be erosion of their employment options. You, sir, need to get a haircut and a real job.

Blame Hamilton

A guy on a television ad says if everyone switched to energy efficient light bulbs, the country would save the same amount of power that Hamilton uses in a year.

I have a better idea. Hamilton people should stop using power, then the country would save the same amount of power that Hamilton uses in a year.

Hamilton people are just being selfish and not thinking about the benefits to the country as a whole.

They’re using the same amount of power the rest of us could use if we kept using the cheap old bulbs.

Shame on you, Hamilton.

Parting shot:

Good luck to the Labour Party in finding a new leader. There are some special qualities required for a politician of this calibre. Basically you need a character larger than life, are a know-all, and above all else, can irritate large masses of long suffering public with everything you say and do.

Fight for Phoenix

Tauranga City Council’s plans to develop Mount Maunganui’s Phoenix carpark into a shopping hub is meeting opposition from some angry residents who want it to become an urban park.

This week, council’s Projects and Monitoring Committee heard from a Mount Maunganui delegation which wants to covert the central parking lot into a boutique-flavour urban park.

Led by resident and developer Bain McDonald, the delegation is offering to convert the central parking lot into an urban park instead of council’s planned shopping precinct (to incorporate public car parking on the Phoenix carpark), which it has been seeking developers to build for about 18 months.

“Tauranga has been going through a growth period for

the last 20 years – and council, through the district plan – has levied developers during that time for impact fees for reserves. These fees are taken for the purpose of mitigating the effects of intensification to pay back to the community by developers,” says Bain.

“For me, it seems like a great opportunity for the public and local community to get back some compensation for this amenity.

“It will be a blank canvas for community-based activities. If there’s a building there, this opportunity is gone forever; this is a one- off opportunity for council.”

Bain suggests the group’s project can be funded from development contributions for reserve funding; and leaving the space as an urban area holds numerous draw cards.

Kiwiana Gifts & Souvenirs owner Ian New believes the shopping hub

will go ahead but says it will be sad to see vast community opportunities lost.

“It’s all just progress, but it’s going to be a shame to see it go because it is used so much with the markets, parades and tourists,” says Ian. “We don’t need more shopping but it’s just what council is doing.

They are selling it off because they need the money.”

Paper Plus Mount Maunganui manager Jane Debenham says the car park is vital to the Mount, with all aspects of retail already catered for.

“I think it’s a great idea to leave it as a green area. I think it’s important we have a space where people can go and relax,” says Jane.

Jane, also Mount Mainstreet’s chairperson, adds it is a perfect spot for the cruise chips and tourists.

High drivers target of TV ad Tauranga residents aren’t convinced a new road safety campaign targeting cannabis users who drive while under the influence is going to have much effect.

The NZ Transport Agency ads target drivers in their 30s and 40s who think its okay to drive after using cannabis. “By and large, these people are not risk takers.

We’re talking to the ‘sensible stoners’ who believe that

using cannabis has little impact on their driving,” says NZTA road safety director Ernst Zollner.

“Many believe that they are safer drivers because they think they’re more focused, drive slower and are therefore more careful on the roads. They don’t consider what they’re doing to be dangerous – but we’re asking them to reconsider that notion, because the facts tell a very different story.”

When asked on SunLive’s Facebook page what viewers thought about the campaign many people were in doubt of its effectiveness.

“Ads a bit of a joke!!!,” says one person.

Another posted: “I think it’s quite funny, the pink frosted pigs was good.

But I really don’t think it will do any good. I have to say that I still think it is the drunk drivers we really should be worried about”.

“The adverts are a good idea, but using them to sway public opinion is heading

towards a simple scare campaign since the advert is simply a bunch of actors.

It’s similar to thinking birds actually fly around your head when you’re hit because you saw it on a cartoon,” someone else posted.

According to the NZTA, international evidence shows drivers under the influence of cannabis are more likely to cause car crashes, and the more cannabis you smoke, the worse your driving is.

“While it’s a commonly-held belief drivers under the influence of cannabis are safer because they drive more slowly, the evidence clearly shows cannabis use slows down reaction times,” says Ernst.

“Road crashes happen very suddenly and unexpectedly, and slower reaction times mean you’re much less likely to see a crash coming in time to avoid it.”

The new ads mark the second stage in a long-term campaign challenging misconceptions about drugged-driving.

Public meeting against legal highs A public meeting in Katikati tonight highlighting the dangers of legal highs is the response to a second shop in the town – this time on the main street – applying for a licence to sell psychoactive substances.

With rumours a specialist store is to open in a vacant premises on Main Rd, the Katikati Community Health Trust organised tonight’s meeting to educate people – particularly parents – on the effects of the legal drugs, such as K2.

Chairperson Brendan Gibbs says with the second shop (joining the Bamboo Barn), applying to sell legal highs, the Trust is concerned it will be more freely available to the town’s youth.

“I think it is terrible. We don’t have a major youth problem in town but we do have a small number of youth who have caused a bit of trouble or are a bit lost and don’t have good homes to go to.”

The meeting aims to make people aware of the health issues young people face when they get addicted to drugs, including legal highs – and to see if opposition to the stores can be organised in a nonaggressive, productive manner.

“I want to see things happen in a positive way, not in a bad way or in a way that promotes anger…something more educational and also a bit of pressure on the person applying for the licence to withdraw their application,” says Brendan.

“We hope to have somebody [present to the meeting] who can sum up the effects from a medical point of view and someone from the Police, who can say what some of the social effects are from having the drug available.”

Age Concern member and Katikati Heritage Museum volunteer Lloyd Elliot is among those strongly opposed to the selling of the legal highs.

“I am totally against the selling of these substances in our lovely town of Katikati and will do what I can to stop it. Everyone I speak too about this is asking me to start a petition for them to sign.”

Under the new Psychoactive Substances Bill stores with a licence can sell the R18 products.

The public is encouraged to attend the meeting at 6pm tonight at St Peters Church, corner Carisbrooke St and Beach Rd.

Look Mum no hands!

Step away from the X-Box, and throw on the helmet and pads. That’s what a group of Western Bay teenagers are doing as they rediscover the thrill of defying gravity.

On Saturday, freestyle BMX riders from as far as Auckland will descend on Dialled Indoor skatepark, for the Western Bay’s first indoor competition of stunts, jumps and tricks on BMX bikes.

BMX Inc event coordinator Daniel Belchamber says it’s exciting to be using the indoor park for the event – so they don’t have to worry about weather and can hold it in the evening. He hopes the competition will attract 40 riders.

Freestyle BMX events are often performed in skate bowls, or off large ramps with outlandish jumps and back-flips in the manner made famous by the X-Games.

Among those taking to the air will be Travis Scott, 15, who started freestyle 18 months ago

after seeing his friends do it.

“Doing crazy stuff just gets me amped,” says Travis, whose favourite trick is the footjam rock (when you put a foot on the fork, then kick the bike around so it rotates 360 degrees).

“We do lots of 360s and jumps and supermans (high jumps where the rider is only holding the handlebars and looks like he is flying). I get out there as often as I can.”

Simon Fordyce, 18, is also looking forward to the competition and has his fingers crossed after placing third in his first competitive event – two months after picking up freestyle BMX. “I used to skateboard but I wasn’t that good and when I discovered this I just love it. It’s just great fun.” The club is open to riders 11 years and older (helmets are compulsory) and meets every Tuesday at the 17th Ave skatepark at 4.30pm. Details: www.bmxinc.co.nz. The competition is open for public to watch at the Triton Ave skate park, with events starting at 7pm on Saturday.

Tattoo culture spans generations

Police are investigating the blaze that destroyed a Ruahihi Rd home but are not yet disclosing details of how they think the fire started.

Detectives have now completed a scene examination of the charred remains of the single-storey home destroyed by a blaze on Tuesday that also resulted in a 41-year-old man being taken into police custody.

The 41-year-old Ruahihi man was taken to Tauranga Hospital and later transferred to Waikato following an armed stand-off with police at the scene of the fire where he was found with burns to his torso and hands along with lacerations to his wrist and throat. When police arrived they found the man outside the burning house armed with a sharp-edged weapon. He was uncooperative with police and hindered emergency services from getting to the scene.

On Thursday he was listed as ‘serious’ in Waikato Hospital.

Man admits swan cruelty

A Katikati man has admitted to purposefully running down a black swan with a jet boat on Tauranga Harbour and causing distress to six other birds.

Carl Williams, 36, pleaded guilty to two charges under the Animal Welfare Act in Tauranga District Court this week in relation to the incident caught on camera on Boxing Day last year. Footage handed in to Tauranga SPCA on February 4 this year shows a jet boat travelling around Tauranga Harbour attempting to run down black swans.

One of seven black swans is seen struggling in the wake of the boat after disappearing under the bow.

The remaining six were chased by the boat and caused distress as they attempted to get away from the ‘unnatural threat’ says Crown prosecutor Hayley Sheridan.

Lotto win ‘still sinking in’

Two Tauranga residents are still coming to terms with winning $250,000 in Saturday night’s Lotto draw after purchasing tickets from the same Bethlehem store.

The man and woman, who wish to remain anonymous, bought two of Saturday night’s four winning First Division tickets from Bethlehem Four Square and Lotto.

Two years for false assault claims

A Tauranga man who admitted to making false allegations of assault against police officers including being sexually violated in the back of a patrol car has been jailed.

Andrew Francis Neilson, 32, was sentenced to two years and two months jail in Tauranga District Court after being found guilty of three counts of perverting the course of justice at a trial in June.

Flue caused ceiling fire

A fault in a flue caused the ceiling fire at a Te Puna house on July 31, not the Marshal Heater it was connected to, says the fire service.

The Weekend Sun earlier reported the resident noticed smouldering where the flue from the heater went through the ceiling.

Tauranga senior station officer Kevin Cowper says an inspection discovered a fault in the inner flue, which would have been detected if the flue had been properly inspected and cleaned.

“It’s a reminder to have chimneys wept and looked at least annually by a competent person,” says Kevin.

Trevor Blaker, 96, etches his army number into his grandson Tristan Kelly’s leg, as great-grandson Josh Kelly watches on.

Leaning in with a steady hand, Trevor Blaker carefully etches the number 28134 on his grandson’s leg in a family tradition now spanning four generations.

At age 96, Trevor has survived many a sight serving in World War 2 where he spent four years as a prisoner of war – a feat that makes this number all the more special.

It’s his New Zealand Army number – the number he bore through the battle of El Alamein on the outskirts of Egypt in 1942, and one that won’t fade easily.

That number is now being passed onto future generations – his grandson Tristan Kelly, 36, and perhaps his great-grandson Josh Kelly, 11, through the art of tattoo.

“I’ve just written my army number, the number I had right through the war,” says Trevor.

“I did most of my fighting in the desert and unfortunately was taken prisoner of war in El Alamein in 1942 and spent the rest of the war cruising round in Italy, at the Russian border and in Poland and Germany.”

At 48 Revolver at the Cruisedeck in Mount Maunganui, Trevor etches the number into a replica of his own tattoo on grandson Tristan’s leg.

“I’m quite pleased he is doing it. It is a bit unique,” says Trevor. “The trouble is once you do it they are there for good.”

Both Tristan and Josh share Trevor’s interest in tattoo art, each having now etched a family legacy onto another.

“He’s been through so much and without

him we wouldn’t be here, so this is a tribute to him,” says Tristan, who has the same tattoo on his leg.

“He has them (tattoos) on both arms and he’s not going to be here forever, so now they will be here for a little bit longer.”

Tristan says including the iconic digits on his leg has been in the works for a long time, but only came together in the last few months.

Eleven-year-old Josh remains tattoo free but has picked up the inking machine tattooing his own name into his father’s wrist.

“I was going to get it done, and we decided it was a good idea for him to do it.”

When it comes to Josh getting a tattoo Tristan is still on the fence, but doubts he will have a choice in stopping him.

Club secures lease Key agreement to get redevelopment of the Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club underway has been approved by Tauranga City Council.

The club, which sits on beachfront at Papamoa Domain, will have its leased area altered to a rectangle lying parallel to the beach, changing from its current 1590m2 lease which stretches back from the sand.

The new area, reduced to about 1150m2, will make room for the new clubhouse design of a two storey 2147m2 structure that will lie along the beach.

On Tuesday, TCC councillors overruled concerns from council staff about the ability of the reserve to cater for further development and a claim the proposal requires 100 car parks.

Councillor Terry Molloy asked where club members park now while Murray Guy questioned if Mount Maunganui and Omanu clubs had to meet the same provisions.

TCC Staff ’s reply is the Papamoa club wants to build on a reserve, even though it has an existing lease and structure on that reserve.

Concerns about the club’s ability to pay for the new building are also part of that process. When a club builds on public land and cannot complete payment or maintain the building, the responsibility falls back on ratepayers, says TCC deputy CEO Christine Jones.

Councillors agreed with Terry’s suggestion they agree to the lease, and the club can work through other issues.

Mayor Stuart Crosby says the issue for the club is urgent. Papamoa coast’s population is about 22,000 people and expected to grow to 40,000-50,000.

An expanded and modern facility will also give the club opportunity to become known as a centre for excellence for surf life saving in New Zealand, says Stuart.

Currently, the building is in a state of disrepair and is unsuitable, say club members. By Andrew Campbell

Former students fight for old classroom

Former parents and school teachers of Otumoetai Primary School are banding together to shame the school after the decision was made to remove a historic classroom from the grounds.

In July, the school’s Board of Trustees voted to remove the 115-year-old building from school grounds, handing it over to the Ministry of Education.

The vote has saddened many former pupils and teachers who want the classroom to remain a historic reminder of what early education was like – and together they are fighting for it to stay.

Former pupil Ross List attended the school in 1942 and feels the classroom should stay where it is.

“We want to shame the board into keeping it on-site.”

Ross wants to see the classroom set up as a museum featuring some of the classroom’s original

contents, including desks and ink wells.

“I want to see it reinstated into its old form. Moving it off the site will lose its mana [pride]. I think we should preserve what we’ve got.”

He says it won’t be the same relocating the building to somewhere like the Historic Village, where a historic Mount Maunganui Primary School classroom stands.

Tauranga resident Bryan Darragh, who attended the school in 1947, agrees the building should be restored to its original state.

“I just feel it is part of the history of early education in Tauranga, and Otumoetai in particular, and it really is a travesty if the rooms are taken away.

“We have so little historic reminders in the way of buildings here.”

Alys-Ingrid Wicksteed attended the school in 1948 and also wants the classroom, and native bush surrounding the building, restored.

“Otumoetai is a significant place.

It was a community based area.

Everything happened there. Especially everything around the school building.

“We want to encourage everybody who is interested in preserving the classroom and the native bush.”

A submission was made to the board on July 19 explaining the views of 15 former students, staff, parents, school committee and Board of Trustees members and two Huria Marae Kaumatua – some of whom attended the school 65 years ago.

At a final meeting in July, Principal Geoff Opie explained the building is currently considered part of the primary’s total site but says the Ministry of Education allows each school a maximum 22 square metre area of floor space. To stay within its quota, and cater for an influx of 6-7 year-old students, the school has to say goodbye to the building.

While appreciating the building’s historic significance, Geoff says

Cheering for cheerleading Former American cheerleader Samantha Carter has stars in her eyes – the St Mary’s Stars.

Originally a high school cheerleader in America, Samantha wanted to bring the cheer spirit to New Zealand. She says cheerleading in New Zealand is more on the scale of dance – but the cheerleading she wants to grow here is American-inspired routines incorporating cheer, tumbling,

land to compete against 30 others schools throughout the country.

The team of 14 girls, aged 8- 11 years old, took out first place even competing in a Level 2 category – a level above the entry level primary schools usually compete in.

Samantha says the win comes as a “dream come true”.

“It means a lot. I’ve been wanting to do it for so long and to finally see it evolve has just been fantastic.”

Although it has been a slow

acrobatics, dance and big stunts.

“I just wanted to get it into schools so my daughter could at least do it. So it was a bit of fun, you know.”

Samantha started coaching cheerleading at St Mary’s School in Tauranga City at the start of term four and the team has recently competed in their first national cheer competition – ‘CheerBrandz Schools Spectacular’.

Protection is empowering Tauranga judo sensei and black belt Clayton Mitchell says knowing how you can protect yourself is empowering – no matter your age.

New Zealand’s top-graded female judoka with a six dan black belt, 50-yearold Clare Hargreaves visited Mount Maunganui last week to help Clayton introduce a free self defence course for women.

The pair is also working to develop the Judo in Schools programme, which began at Green Park Primary School last week. Now, St Mary’s School is looking to adopt the programme next term and St Thomas More has also shown interest.

Clayton says teaching judo in schools helps to show children how to better protect themselves if they find themselves in danger.

“Judo in schools is a great way for children to gain co-ordination and balance, learn aspects of the Japanese culture, better understand discipline; and is a great way to bully proof children.”

As part of the Judo syllabus, Clare and Clayton want to develop a female self defence module to empower women and give them skills to better defend themselves.

“We believe self defence is an essential skill for women of all ages. It’s about developing a strong core, inner strength and balance,” says Clayton.

“Whether I’m teaching five to seven year olds at Arataki Judo, the Police or women how to defend themselves –

learning how to hold yourself – knowing you can protect yourself is empowering.”

The module can be run anywhere by trained instructors.

Picture a hall filled with white fluff If you’re struggling – visit Maungatapu School hall next Sunday where the national Bichon Frise Club is holding its annual Tauranga Fun Day. Once a year the national club, for pure bred bichon frise and their owners, visits the Bay of Plenty for a day of events, competition and fun.

Club president and secretary Marion Watson says annual highlights include the Mighty Tauranga/Auckland Challenge and competition categories such as best novice handler, agility and obedience.

Once boasting about 100 members, club numbers have dropped in recent years – but Marion says it’s not because of a reduced interest in the breed.

“I just think it’s a sign of the times, business – a lot of people are busy, and work weekends now too.”

Club members from across the Bay, as well as pure bred bichon frise owners, can join the event and the general public is invited to watch.

“It is all about fun and socialising.”

The event begins 11am on September 8, with $2 door charge and people can bring a plate for a shared lunch.

Auction items finalised

New chapter for Te Puke library The revamped Te Puke Library and Council Service Centre is being officially reopened with a public celebration today.

Western Bay District Council customer services manager Barbara Whitton says work to improve the layout of the library, which began in February, now makes the space more attractive for users.

Plus, a private meeting area has also been established for service centre staff to discuss sensitive council issues with clients.

“It’s all been about increasing the public space and making better use of the area available by shifting walls and making it more user friendly,” says Barbara.

The changes, which include an improved desk layout and dedicated spaces for children, Wi-Fi and quiet reading, allow the shelves to be spread out; and lowering the top shelves makes many books, which were inaccessible in the past, easy to reach.

“It will mean people feel it’s more their space and they will make more use of it,” says Barbara.

A formal opening this morning is being followed with a public celebration from 1pm with performances by children’s culture groups, a sausage sizzle, facepainting and other entertainment.

The auction, which will be held at the ASB Arena on September 27, will feature 138 items for auction including an $8000 ride-on lawn mower from Kubota New Zealand and a $20,000 Fiat car from Farmer Motor Group.

Organiser and Tauranga Police CIB Charitable Trust trustee Detective Sergeant Pete Blackwell is encouraging people to register their interest in the car before the auction.

“People who register on our website will be given three years’ free service for the car if they buy it.

“It just an extra carrot we have, from Farmer Motor Group, to get people interested.”

Pete says there are also other amazing items up for auction.

One of the items to be auctioned is a signed New Zealand ‘Dream Team/All Stars’ rugby jersey.

“There are only three of these jerseys in existence, the other two are owned by Sir Gordon Tietjens and the NZRFU – but this is the only one of the three that includes the signature of Sevens and All Black legend Jonah Lomu.”

Tauranga city events funding to get work-over At a Tauranga City Council workshop, elected members discussed a long overdue review of seed funding to attract events to our city.

No decisions are made at workshops and the informal format allows wide ranging discussion – which there was.

Some cities are pouring big bucks into buying events that attract large crowds, to stimulate their local economy.

Auckland has a $10 million budget, Wellington $3.4 million, Christchurch $2.1 million, Dunedin $1.1 million and Tauranga $200,000.

New Plymouth recently paid $750,000 to attract an All Black game, we were told. In Hawkes Bay, the regional council provides funding and we were told we should look on events funding as an investment – not as a hand up or a hand out.

TCC CEO Garry Poole said cities are in a war/competition to attract events and it is a completely different world from 2007.

Tauranga’s event funding amount and policy stems from the year 2000, so elected members are aware the policy is overdue for review. But what to do? On one hand it’s true that we can’t compete with the current arrangement.

On another hand

But on another hand many ratepayers are struggling to pay existing rates. But businesses also pay rates, and it’s a function of Local Government to stimulate local economies. The popular line here is everyone benefits in a trickle up/down/around effect of new dollars coming into the city.

Sport BOP CEO Wayne Werder made a sensible presentation on how he saw council’s position.

Council had to decide whether events funding is a priority. If so, a delegated and speedy decision process is needed. There is

risk that not every event will succeed and council has to accept that. Political input into events via council should be removed and its role should be one of leadership. So the message we got from all presenters was be in events, provide leadership – accept the risks and get on with it.

The other side is where do increased dollars come from? A group of local businessmen are offering to set up some form of arm’s length structure to seed-fund events that can return a surplus.

Council could be part of this if it chooses.

But it will not address the ‘feel good’ social benefit-type of event that will never pay for itself.

Other elected members said it is not always about economics.

Staff will return a report, summarising all options for council discussion/decision.

Lengthy deliberations on the Freedom Camping Policy resulted in what most of us hope is a workable compromise to maintain order around the city.

This not well thought-out piece of legislation was created by Central Government for the Rugby World Cup. Basically, it says you can “freedom camp” anywhere you like unless the local authority has reasons why you shouldn’t; and those reasons are limited to issues like health, safety and access.

As noted previously, it’s full of fishhooks such as you can park where you like provided it’s all legal – you just can’t sleep overnight in areas restricted by council bylaw.

After lengthy debate and discussion it was decided Marine Parade at the Mount

will have a ban on overnighting east of Banks Ave from December 1 to February 8.

A ban already exists on the rest of Marine Parade. F ergusson Park will have its number of permitted mobile homes reduced to three; and Sulphur Point’s boat ramp will have its allowance increase to 10 during winter months. But overnighters will have hours limited from 8pm to 6am from December 1 to February 8 to accommodate peak boat trailer parking – the amenity’s real purpose.

From my view, the outcome, which is very detailed, is reasonable but will not please everyone.

Monitoring and enforcement will be key to its success or otherwise.

And once again, the poor old ratepayer will pick up the bill for signs and staff.

But infringement fees might offset some of this cost.

Other costs, such as a new requirement to scaffold all new buildings which adds about $4,000 up, simply fly under the radar.

In Tauranga last year, council transferred $30 million of infrastructure loans to the rates bill simply because it wasn’t collecting enough development contributions.

Reading ministerial statements, the law change coming later this year will require strong tummy muscles from elected members to manage expected fall-out with ratepayers.

I had an interesting visit to our airport’s Control Tower, as Chair of the Airport Committee. Like turning on a tap or flicking a light switch, we accept it just happens.

Managing 400-500 aircraft movements on a busy day without a hitch takes organisation.

It’s a well-oiled machine and was reassuring to witness the technology coupled with the controllers using binoculars to sight approaching aircraft.

Interloping governments

This week’s mindbender from Sir Isaac Newton – “Tact is the knack of making a point without making an enemy”.

On the subject of Central Government interloping on Local Government we’ve been alerted to a pending change in how local councils will be able to fund growth.

Currently, ratepayers pay for their existing infrastructure via rates; and new building contributes to the cost of their addition and demands on city infrastructure via development contributions. These add to costs of new buildings – a politically sensitive issue.

I’m not fully aware of the detail, but from what I’ve been able to glean it’s not good news for ratepayers. Put simply it’s much easier to spread the financial load over 53,000 ratepayers than a few hundred new buildings each year. And the Government can cane local councils over “unreasonable rates increases”. A lot of these increased costs are result of the Resource Management Act – imposed by Government.

Having a passion for fostering success StartUp weekend head organiser Sheldon Nesdale and Teamwork PM.net director and sponsor Sam Kidd are both passionate about the StartUp Weekend concept.

Passion pours out of Tauranga entrepreneur Sheldon Nesdale. For someone who loves to encourage others to make a “dent in the universe”, he is leading from the front.

The self-employed marketing consultant is passionate about fostering business growth and making positive change in Tauranga, describing it as a great place with the potential to be even better – and he’s been doing his part to achieve this by organising StartUp Weekend and recently TEDx Tauranga.

“I believe there is great potential here as a centre of innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity – that’s where our future is.”

Ironically, Sheldon started organising business events after waiting for others to do so; and even though he now has a team of many helpers supporting the projects, he has no plans to stop.

Full of inspiration

Inspired after attending a StartUp Weekend event in Auckland, last year he set his mind to bringing the 54-hour-long weekend StartUp marathon to Tauranga. The event’s success prompted him to go one further and host a TEDx event in Tauranga – the global movement where people give short talks that aim to inspire others to make change. The inaugural

talk was a hit, with Sheldon focused on attending a training course in Vancouver in March to learn how to run a bigger event – with hopes to host an event for about 500 in July.

“I just love to connect with these people and turn them into friends with our regular Friday morning breakfast club, and give back to them; and then when the time’s right you share your vision of what you want to happen and ask for volunteers and boom, up go the hands. It’s amazing.”

Sheldon thanked his many helpers for their support including Clare Kemeys, Tina Jennen and Stacey Jones who took over the reins for StartUp Weekend while he and his team of TedX team were organising the July event.

Working together

So what inspires Sheldon to pour his energy into organizing these events? What’s his big vision?

“I don’t know if I have a massive vision, I just see lots of opportunities. Just small things I can do to get people together and when I’ve got one of these on my radar I am going to hunt it down.”

His philosophy is about working together, rather than against each other to foster success.

“If we are busy competing against each other we are not going to win, but if we find ways to collaborate with each other we can all win.”

Returning president Paul Bowker (H&H Construction) says while existing members can now build on their knowledge and contribution from previous years, he is pleased to see some new blood.

The two new members are Phillip Julian (Port of Tauranga), and Peter McKinlay (McKinlay Douglas Ltd) – a former chamber board member who is returning after a term’s absence.

Paul says the board has important decisions to make about the future of the chamber to ensure it remains relevant to the business community and adds value to members.

“A great cheap dog chew or pull toy is braided old socks, or just plain old socks tied together with great big knots – preferably with a tennis-ball hiding in one of the toes (needs to be a soft-ish ball as wooden ones will hurt otherwise). Washing the socks first is not really necessary if they smell like the dog’s favourite person.” Keep your photos coming! In following weeks we’ll be running a series on great places to walk dogs.

Association standing up for Kiwi investors Investors in public companies could be forgiven for feeling like small pawns in a complex game of chess, says New Zealand Shareholders Association national chairman John Hawkins.

“They know they are important in the big picture. But how can they have any say in developing protective rules and influencing the behaviour of companies they put money into.” John says many people are frightened by the disastrous finance company collapses, even though most of these were privately-owned and not listed on the sharemarket.

“Fortunately, the NZSA is there to stand up for the rights of individual investors, including people enrolled in KiwiSaver.”

The NZSA has played an important role in developing a raft of new protections, including the widely respected regulator – the Financial Markets Authority.

The NZSA is known for encouraging companies to act fairly

towards all investors, says John.

It talks with boards and top management on specific issues, and if necessary makes complaints to authorities to ensure valid concerns are properly dealt with. Where necessary, the association can also use its media profile to lobby for the rights of retail shareholders.

With five branches throughout NZ (one is based in Tauranga), the NZSA provides investors a forum for top guest speakers they could not otherwise access, plus the opportunity to network and learn from each other.

Fathers hoping for lucky Lotto loot Lotto tickets are popular present for dads on Fathers’ Day. But his week a few residents are celebrating early.

Two Tauranga residents are still coming to terms with winning $250,000 in Saturday night’s Lotto draw after purchasing tickets from Bethlehem Four Square and Lotto.

The man and woman, who wish to remain anonymous, bought two of Saturday night’s four winning First Division tickets.

The man, who is semi-retired, describes the win as “exciting” and says it’s “still sinking in”.

“I just popped in on the offchance to buy a ticket,” he says.

“When I went to check the results in the paper I couldn’t believe it – I had to check it over and over.

“When you think about winning this kind of money in Lotto you think ‘gosh’ and start dreaming about what you’d do.”

Other than investing his money wisely, the man already has plans to spend his big win.

“I’m looking forward to buying a larger boat and upgrad-

ing my car. We also have a family wedding coming up so this win is very timely.”

The woman is “very happy” and is yet to decide how she will spend her winnings.

This Fathers’ Day, if lotto tickets are a present of choice, perhaps try your luck at Cherrywood Lotto and Bookshop – named the second best Lotto store in New Zealand this week.

Owners Sharon and Alan Hitchcock and Chris Dunn and Ann Maree Roebuck came second out of 1200 Lotto New Zealand stores in the organisation’s retailer reward scheme.

“We were advised of the win by phone a fortnight ago, by the chief operating office of retail Chris Lynam,” says Chris.

Father of two steel-ing the show

Nic Clegg works on one of his new geometric sculpting creations.

Five years ago, father of two Nic Clegg moved to Tauranga from his home in England to provide a cleaner, healthier environment for his children.

The contrast between that world and his life here is “massive”, but he loves his new life in the Bay and feels a stronger father because of it.

“It’s this massive sort of shift in lifestyle, from the dank,

dirty, grey city through to this here.

I’m absolutely loving it. For the kids it’s perfect.”

The move also allowed Nic to turn his part time sculpting passion into a full time job, and now sparks are flying as he takes an angle grinder to one of his latest creations.

The sculptures are a new concept for Nic, 42, and will feature in a show scheduled for 2014.

As he tackles this new challenge, the work emerging from Nic’s first five years in New Zealand will be on display in his first solo show in Tauranga next month.

His exhibition is a retrospective look at his work, featuring a lot of steel creations depicting Nic’s time growing up in the industrial north of England.

“This is why I have the retrospective [exhibition], I’m moving off in a different direction.”

His new work, while still in planning stages, focuses around abstract geometry and looks at “where mathematics becomes art”.

“It’s not to say I won’t be doing more of the work I do at the moment, but this is an exploration.”

The exhibition is at Zeus Gallery on 11th Ave from September 7-27.

Gallery director Elliot Mason is pleased and proud to showcase Nic’s work.

“It never ceases to amaze what Nic does with steel. His eye for the farcical, coupled with his incredible technical skill, produces such remarkable work that never fails to entertain.”

New talent at tasty store The Cheesecake Shop freshening up with an upgrade and new owners to boot.

April saw a big makeover for the shop in Cameron Rd, with a new plant, display cabinets and a new layout. New owners Suez and Paul Reid also underwent extensive training on how to operate this terrific business.

They say the key to success is their new-found passion.

“We bake on the premises using the basics, butter, sugar, flour, baking powder and fresh ingredients etc, oh we forgot … there is chocolate also,” they say. “Unlike a lot of other businesses of this type, we bake right there which gives us flexibility and freshness.”

Since the makeover there have been a number of new products added to the range of already amazing cakes. Ask Suez “What is original sin? And the answer, with a smile, is: “pure decadent – you really need to come see”.

Both Paul and Suez are determined that only products of the highest quality are to be sold at the store;

New graduates of Summerhill Academy’s 2013 programme are celebrating on the back of what organiser Garth Collings is calling the academy’s “best year yet”.

The academy held its graduation ceremony at the weekend, where 28 students, aged 16-18, received their Summerhill A1 Gold Card for completing the popular leadership course.

Taking place on a working farm and public adventure centre in the Papamoa Hills, the course features adventurebased learning and life skills training, including jet boating, gliding, budgeting, career planning and first aid.

Garth says the quality of participants this year was “amazing” and congratulates the students on their graduation.

“It was fantastic; everyone was committed to the course.”

Highlights included many adventure activities and Amped for Life speaker Pat Buckley, who overcame drug addiction to become a passionate paramedic and now speaks to schools nationwide.

There was also a challenge to take a

$20 note and see how much profit could be gained – with one student returning with $254.

At the graduation, Samantha Meads was awarded the Craig Investment Award.

“She did really well,” says Garth.

Samantha, who prior to the course was afraid of public speaking, is now applying for the head girl position at her school.

“I would not have been able to change my life in so many positive ways.”

The fifth annual course will begin this summer and students are encouraged to sign up. Participants are presented with the Summerhill A1 Gold Card, which gives future employers and educators an online link to their “outstanding character reference”.

Spring season celebrated with annual display Papamoa Art Collective is holding their annual Spring Exhibition at the end of the month.

Each year, the collective holds an exhibition to showcase members’ artwork. The exhibition also enables the collective’s

emerging artists to display their work for the first time.

From August 30-September 8, the exhibition is at shop 5, Palm Beach Plaza Papamoa, and will be open 9am-5pm daily.

“The Regional Council is a majority shareholder in the Port of Tauranga, through its subsidiary company Quayside Holdings”, says chief executive Mary-Anne Macleod.

“We used the sale of perpetual preference shares in Quayside to create the Regional Infrastructure Fund, meaning we can make this investment without increasing rates in coming years.”

The Regional Infrastructure Fund has allocated up to $15million for a shared tertiary CBD campus in Tauranga, up to $5million for a Marine Precinct in Tauranga, up to $2.5million towards an Innovation Centre at Rotorua’s Scion Innovation Park, and up to $18million toward the Opotiki Harbour Transformation Project.

“The response from local councils and business agencies has been fantastic”, says Mary.

“These projects all have great potential benefits for education, jobs, and economic development across the Bay of Plenty region”.

It’s Daffodil Day today Tauranga’s streets have turned yellow today to celebrate the Cancer Society’s 23rd annual Daffodil Day appeal.

The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society is asking the Tauranga community to again dig deep and support the Cancer Society’s largest and most important fundraising and awareness appeal.

Daffodil Day has become one of New Zealand’s most recognisable campaigns – and

is the main funding source for the Cancer Society.

The last few weeks have been awash with Daffodil Day activity including the pre-sale of more than 2000 bunches of daffodils to businesses in the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Lakes areas; as well as schools, businesses and clubs registering to hold Daffodil Day fundraising events for the Cancer Society.

“Daffodil Day is a well-known New Zealand campaign and people love to get involved,” says Waikato Bay of Plenty Cancer Society spokeswoman Rachael Mounsey.

“This year will be amazing. The streets will be awash with yellow daffodils as hundreds of collectors take to streets around the region to hand out fresh or fabric daffodils in exchange for a donation.”

Daffodil Day you are donating to a cause that is close to home. “People like to know that the money they give stays locally and assists those in their local community – we can give people that guarantee.

“The Cancer Society receives no direct government funding so relies on the generosity of New Zealanders to operate. Every Daffodil Day we are overwhelmed at the generosity of communities in our region and we make sure that every dollar counts, minimising expenses and channeling every dollar possible back into free support services.”

Donations from Daffodil Day are relied on to provide supportive care for cancer patients, their carers, whanau and friends, fund cancer research; and to provide the public with information on the ways to reduce the risk of cancer through a smokefree, sun smart, healthy lifestyle.

“Last year, Daffodil Day raised nearly $600,000 in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty Division, and we are hoping that people will continue to support our appeal. The money raised will enable us to continue providing vital services within the region.”

Putting ageing in the right place Q: My mother lives in her own home. I am looking at care options for her as she has had a few falls lately. We are thinking of a rest home but would also like to know about at home care options.

A: Staying in your own home is not as difficult as it once was. Often it is not 24 hours of care a day that is needed, but rather gap-stoppers where an individual is struggling or when family cannot be around.

In this country we are blessed with a good health system that allows individuals to remain in their own home. Your mother’s doctor is the first step to having her needs assessed and ascertaining if she is entitled to government support. If she is eligible, you might feel she needs additional care, and an agency is able to assist should she require more support.

If your mother does need 24-hour care there are various options. There are rest homes and there are great options in the Bay. I recommend you and your

mother visit a number and ascertain for yourself which ones best fit her needs and values.

Alternatively, an agency is able to provide one on one care to her in her own home. A caregiver works with a client, encouraging them to actively be involved in their daily activities, as well as providing security and peace of mind.

Trust seeks new blood The Tauranga Moana Museum Trust has vacancies for up to three new trustees on its Board. The Board is about to enter a phase of intensive fundraising to build a museum in Tauranga and needs additional expertise, says its Chair, Neil Te Kani.

The Board is particularly interested in applicants with connections to the Tauranga business community or with skills in financial management, project planning or fundraising, says Mr. Te Kani.

Trustees must have an appropriate level of skills, knowledge and experience. They will be appointed by the Board on the basis of the contribution they can make to the Trust and not as representatives of any particular group.

The Weekend Sun is profiling some of Tauranga’s historic places dotted around the city.

This week reporter Zoe Hunter looks at one of the first commercial hotels built along The Strand.

Strand. Two years on, a new building was erected and renamed St Amand by former owners New Zealand Breweries Ltd in 1956.

It was operated as a bar before being changed to backpackers accommodation in the late 1990s.

Cobb & Co restaurant and Harbourside City Backpackers now operate from the building. Harbourside City Backpackers manager Aline Hodzson appreciates working in a building significant to Tauranga City.

“I think it’s great, especially having so many travellers coming through.”

The hotel was named after a Frenchman believed to be the patron saint of barmen, innkeepers, wine growers, and vintners.

The building carries a New Zealand Historic Places Trust Category 2 registration.

According to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, people arrived in Tauranga by ship in the 1870s and accommodation was immediately available opposite the wharf on The Strand.

Today, Hotel St Amand is the only remaining hotel on The Strand from those days.

Originally a timber yard, John Conway built the first commercial hotel at 105 The Strand in 1876, which was owned by Joseph Ellis.

In 1916 the hotel was destroyed in Next week: a fire which is said to have gutted a The Weekend Sun profiles the whole block of buildings along The Omanawa Falls Power Station.

Famous works in 31st exhibition Ask Linda Ingles what highlights there are at the Tauranga Embroiderers’ Guild’s 31st exhibition this week and she’ll tell you there’s plenty.

These, she says, include a depiction of the late Rita Angus’ famous painting Cass in stitch, and the worldwide phenomenon Euphemia’s Quilt.

Elms Foundation in 2012 and has been admired by visitors from across the globe.

Linda, the guild’s president, says the quilt is on loan from The Elms as a highlight of the exhibition, and will join a range of sections featuring junior and senior contemporary and traditional works.

“Our junior members (aged 11-18) have a lovely display, it’s amazing what they can put out these days.”

Anyone is welcome to enjoy the exhibition, now open 9.30am-4pm until Sunday, September 1 at Baycourt Exhibition Hall. A gold coin donation is required.

Free addiction support programme A free programme offering support and aid to the significant others of those battling addiction begins next week in Tauranga.

Hanmer Clinic CEO David Benton says watching a loved one struggle with addiction can be devastating – and it’s this knowledge which prompted the idea for the new programme.

David says while addicts themselves often receive dedicated attention and support to get better, the family and friends around them are commonly overlooked.

“One of the things that happens often, is the person with addiction comes to us for treatment, and they do well. They go from being the villain of sorts, to being the hero.

“That leaves the family members outside, who have struggled for years. They’re left to struggle with their unresolved feelings, and if they don’t get help, that can impede on the whole circle.”

Hanmer Clinic has supported addicts for 14 years, and currently runs programmes for family members of people already in their addiction programmes.

David says they felt the need for a wider and more general programme, which is open to anyone.

Starting September 3, from 1pm3pm, the seven sessions will include self-care, empowerment, assertiveness, family dynamics, genetic effects, and support options.

David says it’s crucial people have the chance to talk about their concerns and get their questions answered.

I’ve written about the complacency of women with respect to heart disease before, but the NZ Heart Foundation is really getting stuck in with clear messages that NZ women are at risk.

Women should be as worried about themselves as they are about their husbands, partners, fathers, brothers and sons. Heart disease is no longer a man’s disease.

It’s a society disease, based on the way that we live our lives.

Traditionally, women were seen to be at less risk than men, but that was at a time when women tended to stay home and be full time mums. That was at a time when food was nowhere near as convenient as it is now, a time when most houses had a vegetable garden; and a time when we

didn’t spend many hours each week sedentary, sitting in front of some kind of electronic stimulation – smart phone, tablet, computer gaming console, TV etc.

The Go Red for Women campaign kicks off in September and is the Heart Foundation’s call to action for women to unite about heart health.

There is a Go Red for Women breakfast event in Auckland on Friday, September 6, at the Crown Plaza featuring Masterchef winner and ‘My Food Bag’ director Nadia Lim along with various heart specialist speakers.

For Jill Steiner, just getting out of bed in the morning and making her children breakfast is exhausting.

The mother-of-two’s days are meticulously planned so she has enough energy to get from ‘A to B without collapsing.

While many mistake this for laziness, Jill’s struggle is the result of being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2008 – a disease affecting her ability to walk, and talk normally. “I like to call it the silent disease, because it’s all happening inside. From the outside I look like a normal healthy person. But my mobility is very low; the paralysis is quite bad in my lower legs.”

Jill, 32, deals with her diagnosis every day and it’s never easy.

“I can never just be spontaneous and go and do something – it’s all about how far I have to walk.”

Jill has an incredibly strong home support system. For those who don’t know, the Bay of Plenty MS Society is there to help.

“Not a lot of people have that [home support]; and they really rely on the MS Society. It’s really just about knowing you’re not crazy.”

MS Society BOP manager Liz Plank manager Liz Plank is encouraging residents and businesses to get behind the cause.

The society supports 150 families from Waihi to Opotiki – under the aid of one field worker.

“If we had 100 people donating $5 a week, that would pay for another part time field worker,” says Liz.The awareness week runs August 31-September 7 and rather than taking to the streets with a bucket, Liz is hoping organisations and companies across the Bay will show support by running casual dress days and bake sales in-house.

“It could be that everyone wears orange one day and brings a gold coin, or holds a cake stall. We’re really hoping people will get behind us on their own.” On top of this, a sausage sizzle outside Harvey Norman at Owens Place on September 7 is scheduled, and residents can text BOPMS to 849 for a $3 donation.

– with red cabbage rotkohi and orange root vegetable mash. Serves 3 Ingredients: 500g Basecamp venison sausages Half red cabbage, finely sliced 1 onion, finely sliced 40-50g butter Pinch of cloves 3 Tbsp sea salt flakes 2 Tbsp brown sugar 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar 1 tsp cinnamon Mash: 1 small celeriac, peeled and diced 2-3 potatoes, peeled and diced 1 medium orange kumara Method: In a large pot, melt most of the butter and cook off the onion. Add layers of cabbage and apple, seasoning each layer with sugar and salt.

Add cloves and top with water until it just floats – bring to boil and simmer for 35 minutes.

While cooking, put mash ingredients

in a separate pot and boil for about 25 minutes. Turn off cabbage (most of the liquid should have evaporated), add cinnamon and vinegar and cover. Cook the sausages for 12-15 minutes then rest.

Mash the root vegetables and add extra butter and season. Serve with sausage and red cabbage and apple – garnish cabbage with microgreens.

“It’s fantastic that there is an organisation out there prepared to put the time, energy and resource into helping multiple birth families,” says Ella.

“Many multiple birth families find it difficult leaving their house within the first few months, so home-based care suits many of them. It works better for someone to come into their home and their space.” PORSE community relationship consultant Hilary Fraser says the partnership is a great opportunity to support a not-for-profit organisation.

“We are multiplying our support by finding ways to support families with twins, triplets, quads and helping them to get the assistance they need.”

We employ positive guidance strategies to set clear, consistent limits and boundaries while striving to foster self-esteem and independence. Children want to please adults. When limits are clear and purposeful, children know what is expected and over time this consistency diminishes power struggles, increases independence and self-regulation,

Mount Maunganui Primary School had well-known musician Tiki Taane join them for their Jump Jam session last week.

The special visit from the Mount-raised star was to help raise money for Bay of Plenty @ Heart, with more than 250 children participating. The school raised $228.80 for the cause.

With spring’s warmer weather on the way, it’s time to get active with its Play in the Bay activities.

The theme for the monthly sports promotion programme in September is ‘Activate’, with 18 have-a-go sessions on offer for various sports and recreation options across the Western Bay, aiming to get people off the couch.

On Sunday, the Tauranga Yacht and Powerboat Club kick offs September’s activities with its annual Father’s Day Family Fun Sail Day which offers a great introduction for people to the fun of sailing.

Interested dads and their families have a chance to experience the fun of sailing themselves alongside members’ big boats and multihulls before finishing with afternoon tea at the clubhouse.

Club spokeswoman Christine Headey says the event is a great chance to find out about sailing courses they could

take next if they enjoy it. The fun sail is from 12.30pm4pm, with anyone interested needing to register ahead (call Christine on 07 578 5512 or email: office@yacht.org. nz, adults $15, under 17 $5, under 5 free).

On Tuesday, the Mount Joggers and Walkers beginners group offers a great chance to start building up your fitness with its 10-week programme that aims to get people running to the top of Mauao (meet Mount Scout Hall, May St, at 9.15am. For details, call Jill Fuller on 027 472 7907).

Next Saturday you can get a taste of the fun and fast-paced golf croquet, with a chance to play in double games and get some pointers from Tauranga Croquet Club members at the Domain greens. Please reconsider closing walkway Re: Ngatai Rd to Seaway Terrace Rd. It has come to our attention that Tauranga City Council is considering permanently closing the above accessway. We wish to object to the proposed closure for the following reasons; 1. The walkway is popular with residents, both in the Ngatai Road vicinity and streets around Seaway Terrace Rd. The former use the walkway to access Beach Rd foreshore and pedestrian routes east to Kulim Park, and west to Fergusson Park. The latter undertake a circular route of this area of Otumoetai.

2.Tauranga residents are being encouraged to get out and walk for health and well-being. Recently, Mayor Stuart Crosby set a good example by pledging to walk the streets of Tauranga. Closure of this walkway is an impediment to easy access to the foreshore, and seems in contradiction to the expressed encouragement.

3. During summer months, on full tide, residents use the walkway to enable enjoyment of swimming and/or kayaking in the harbour off Beach Rd. Some families include children, one of whom is handicapped. If the closure occurs, their pedestrian access to the foreshore and to Kulim Park play area will be largely curtailed.

We understand that the rationale for the proposed closure is safety. It appears the drop-off from the walkway to number 141 Ngatai Rd may be of concern.

We understand that the current building plans for that property to include a contract to construct a high retaining wall with handrails. If this is so, it would appear safety has been attended to.

As residents of many years, who have enjoyed and appreciated the walkway, we ask you to give due consideration to the above points and withdraw the proposal.

Freedom campers: Rules must work At last week’s Tauranga City Council Strategy Policy Committee meeting, this piece of nonsense raised its head with about 240 submissions against and only 70 for draft new bylaw.

Clearly, 28 allocated areas allowing 90 mobile homes with 2-night stays is ridiculous, being impossible to police.

The compliance costs involved would be horrendous. A robust registration and sticker system to identify parked vehicles plus details of owners is essential.

No street parking, simply cater for a maximum of up to 30 vehicles in TCC public carparks like Cliff Rd, Greerton Library, Papamoa Library, ex-Mount Cossie

Club, Sulphur Point Marine carpark and the likes of Memorial Park, Ferguson Park, Taylor Rd Reserve from 6pm until 8am.

The more camper vehicles, the more targets for crime.

Tauranga citizens welcome all visitors to our city including mobile homes, campervans, etc. But the rules must be workable.

At the Mount Sports Centre (Blake Park), rear carpark last Thursday, there was a large house-bus parked across 5 carparks and a minibus (no self-contained facilities) was taking up 2 carparks, both remaining overnight. This took parking away from tennis players; and more tellingly, from the late afternoon netballer families.

Camping grounds: Time for change Is it ‘fair go’ for all?

Recently, it was again brought to my attention the low Land Valuation (LV) of a beachfront lease. Calculations I have taken from Tauranga City Council’s rates website show the Papamoa Beachfront Camp LV is a mere $72 m2 compared to the non-Beachfront Papamoa Christian Camp at $101 m2 and another similar at $103 m2.

Wow, what a big difference and why?

Surely, beachfront used for business purposes should have a higher value for lease and rates to non-beachfront, regardless of area? Rates and lease terms are normally based on LV - so are other council ratepayers getting a fair go ? Has Tauranga City Council’s CEO, staff, ever lodged an objection to such a low LV? Perhaps it time for an audit or commissioner?

I trust in the lease renewal that council will obtain at least three independent valuations, with at least one by an out-of-district valuer, so that ratepayers can be assured of a fair deal.

I'm sure ratepayers will agree that any council lands, reserves or property used for business purposes should be treated on an open playing field to rates and lease of private freehold lands.

Devolution not evolution Re: Ernest Izett ‘Christhurch needs a venue for all (Sun, August 23). So the world just came into being and ‘creation’ oops just evolved from something simple to something complicated. I see devolution more than evolution. I wonder why a horse and donkey mating can only produce a sterile mule?

Personally, I’m not particularly interested in cathedrals, cardboard or concrete, although some of the latter are magnificent.

God, the Bible says, doesn’t live in buildings made with hands. His Holy Spirit dwells in a man. Jesus Christ the center-piece of all was a Jew born and bred in Israel. An historic figure even Muslims accept that fact they just don’t accept his deity.

Take a trip to Israel and you’ll see how Jesus’s life, the Bible and the countryside all concur. Take for example his trial, death and crucifixion, even the tomb he walked out of three days after his burial. The buildings where he was tried are still there.

Sure, like you Ernest I don’t know where God came from but I do know when you accept him as your Saviour life takes on a full and wonderful meaning.

Finally the Bible contains prophesies, over 400 have already been fulfilled, just coincidence?

The Democratic process is something countries like New Zealand treasures so it is therefore most disappointing when it is proven that the Tauranga City Council has made a mistake that directly impacts on this process.

Firstly the Council changes the rules around signs on vehicles and whilst welcome, making or changing rules on the hoof is not good governance as the work should have been undertaken by the councillors when they collectively decided to change the election sign rules, after the last election.

Then worse still, the latest revelation is that the candidate’s book is incorrect and the ability to advertise on private land should have been permitted to commence from the 1st September and not the reported 14th September.

And further to this the like minded people that I am standing with tried to lease a billboard at Baypark and although we had a signed a contract, at a very late stage, we were informed that we could not advertise at that venue as it is owned by ratepayers. This resulted in the city missing out on over $2,000 of rental income and under the circumstances this seems to defy logic. I think, time for some changes.

Ill-conceived project: While driving past Coronation Park, Maunganui Rd, I was absolutely appalled by what I saw. Perfectly good trees cut from the centre of this beautiful grove and stumps left.

What was a natural windbreak and scenic backdrop has been trashed, exposing unsightly Port buildings.

Businesspeople spoken to in the vicinity are outraged by what has occurred in this delightful park. The project appears to be ill-conceived, environmental barbarism. People need to be held accountable. Who authorised the desecration of the healthy mature trees?

Where is the tree report and were TCC Councillors aware of the extent and after-effects of this devastation.

Sirens: Two years of ineptitude This tsunami siren plan shemozzle that faces axing is an utter disgrace. For goodness sake, we are talking about the protection of thousands of Tauranga folk.

Yet all we get from our Tauranga City Councillors is dilly-dally. Clearly, the only sensible option from the beginning has been Air Raid Sirens, but the current bunch seem unable to give strong leadership and make logical decisions.So now the council are back looking at text messaging and helicopters with loud speakers – what a joke.

There needs to be loud continuous sound as a baseline until the emergency passes, supported by other initiatives, but not instead of. Helicopters cannot be

everywhere and are subject to availability. The local media has previously already reported on coastal residents selling up because of the lack of confidence.

We have been left behind other authorities who have put in place warning systems and evacuation routes long ago.

There has been two-and-a-half years of ineptitude.

The Council has seem to have forgotten that 300,000 people lost their lives in the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami – I will never forget.

The message is clear, concerning Councillors who have stonewalled on loud audible sirens and evacuation routs - Vote them out.

Election signs: Rule-abiders forgotten In the fiasco surrounding election signs on cars, there is a group that has been ignored and forgotten. They are the candidates who abided by the rules, silly as they seemed, and did not take to the roads with cars covered in signage.

Part of my campaign planning involved painting a vehicle with election advertising. Once my team realised that the rules gave a very small time window for use of that vehicle, the plan was cancelled as being too costly.

I have no doubt that other candidates made the same decision.

Now, council has bowed to those who ignored the rule. Candidates who obeyed the letter of the law are disadvantaged in at least three ways. First, their names and advertising have not been plastered all over the newspaper. Second, reassignment of budget may mean they are no longer able to afford election signage on vehicles. Third, they will experience further time delays if they now choose to advertise on vehicles.

My bicycle is my main vehicle, so watch out for the signs on it Tauranga.

Runaway debt a big problem Tauranga City Council - “Look after the dollars and the millions will look after themselves”. Its an old saying but so true.

I raise the issue of money because the council has just advised me of the amount they pay for concrete curbing.

To organise and lay the new concrete curbing at the corner of 12th Ave and Cameron Rd costs you and I about $50,400.

This, to me, is an outrageous amount of money for this little job and we did

not need it anyway.

Plus, they have blocked up a perfectly good roadway for no good reason that I can see. And it is happening all over our city at $50,000. a time. They call it Road Safety Improvements.

The Minister for Local Government advises that for him to appoint a Crown Manager to replace the council, he must believe that a significant problem exists. I believe our runaway debt is that significant problem.

Tauranga City Council responds: The Cameron Rd/12th Ave intersection safety improvements are part of the 2012/13 Minor Safety Contract. This is one of 39 sites being upgraded this year mainly to improve safety, and traffic and pedstrian flows. The construction contract was evaluated using the Lowest Price Conforming method - three tenders were received and the successful contractor had the lowest price. The New Zealand Transport Agency give a subsidy of 53% for these safety works, therefore the cost to the council was $23,688.

The work that took place included kerbing, but also a range of other works such as footpath construction, stormwater improvements, relocation of trees, signs and traffic management.

Use of churches:

To Ernest Izett, re: your letter ‘Christchurch needs a venue for all’ (The Sun, August 23)regarding use of churches and your comments pertaining to the deity we worship.

My heart goes out to you. You have obviously never been touched by our Heavenly Father and felt the huge love he gives out to us all.

Living a life without knowledge and faith of our creator has apparently caused you to express God is a non-existent deity.

That is sad. I, as one of his family, can testify personally for having miracle healings and countless prayers anwered in God’s response to my faith. This can be for you too.

Stale council needs new members We need council that listens Tauranga City Council has gone stale and it’s little wonder the city is stagnating. Some existing members have been on council for over 20 years, while others have been on there for 12-15 years.If you have the same old people, doing the same old things, then you get the same old results.

If ever there was a need for real change, it is now. So this election I’ll be voting for candidates who haven’t been on the council before. I hope others will do the same, so we put some life back into our City Council.

I commend Norm Mayo in running for Western Bay of Plenty District Council again. Norm has spent his entire life in Katikati.

He understands the difficulty ratepayers have in finding the money to pay high rates. He has always pushed for rates relief and cost cutting. It seems he is so often a lone voice on this.

Councillors need to listen to the ratepayers and push for what we want. We need a council that listens.

I see Norm is advocating Mark Boyle for Western Bay Mayor to get things changed. Bring it on I say.

Put Hi-cane to test once and for all There are some points that I agree with Mike Chapman the CEO of NZ Kiwifruit Growers Inc and others I strongly disagree with.

I agree that EPA (Environmental Protection Authority) formerly ERMA, makes the call about risk management of agri-chemicals such as Hi-cane - as they did in 2006. I went to Wellington and met with EPA and raised concerns that were not raised when they last assessed Hi-cane.

They gave me a commitment to come

to Tauranga and see these concerns first-hand. That was 2 years ago and I’m still waiting. Nowhere in that meeting was I told that independent research had been done on Hi-cane and the effects on the health of human beings. I also agree with Mike when he says Hi-cane poses a risk to human health and safety and to the environment.

The time has come for us all to get honest with each other and put Hi-cane to the test, once and for all. Surely, there are

Hi-cane: It does harm us We live in Katikati and totally agree with what Tommy ‘Kapai’ Wilson says about kiwifruit sprays harming the environment. Although there are many pollutants that are harmful, the kiwifruit orchard sprays are affecting us the most because they are predominantly in our area and continuously being sprayed.

Unfortunately, people are putting their income first before our health and environment, which is suffering more than many people realize. I have heard that the Bay Of Plenty has the highest cancer rate in New Zealand. And considering how many friends and family

have died of cancer that lived near orchards, I am sure that the sprays are contributing to it.

When you have a spray like Hi-cane that will kill a dog if it licks it within two hours of application, and you can’t go in the orchard for three days after or touch the vines for five days, it should be banned.

Insecticides are bad also and we should change to organic sprays. We need to find a better way and think about our environment and the generations to come, or we will become polluted like the rest of the world.

Generosity needs to begin at home I read with interest the article on the large number of knitted goods that Bay of Plenty women have made and shipped to Eastern Europe (The Weeekend Sun, August 23).

While I applaud the goodwill and effort of these caring women, I am at a loss as to why these good are shipped overseas. Every day we read about poverty here, children going to school hungry and without adequate warm clothing and footwear.

If these are the conditions in our

schools, how many of these children are tucked up at night in a warm blanket, or have a warm jumper, or socks to wear.

It is admirable so many donate their time to caring about others.

However, I’d like to see their enthusiasm directed to New Zealand families who struggle to keep children warm and fed. Consideration for others is a local as well as international problem, and charity can begin at home.

We need good rail too I am totally amazed that Auckland is spending $100 million on getting universal tickets for public transport. Where is the common sense? All the hype about the lack of houses in Auckland could be solved by using the same system, as most of the other countries of the world, and that is rail.

If we had a good rail system like Britain we could have people commuting from areas outside Auckland; and thereby reduce the pressure on housing. It would also benefit the other areas.

I think we must be one of the few countries in the world where tourists have hire their own transport because we do not have a rail system. ‘Why not?’ you may well ask, ‘when Auckland City spends $100 million on bus and ferry tickets?’

The answer is that the Government makes too much revenue from the petrol tax and car tax to want to fund public rail travel. When you look into how much a kilometre of roading costs and compare that to the cost of a rail line, taking into consideration the cost effectiveness of the lack of road congestion, pollution and road accidents, it is obvious that the answer is rail. But the Prime Minister would rather see people on bikes on defunct railway tracks, than locomotives.

Parents tackling child abuse A free workshop for parents, designed to keep children safe from sexual abuse, is at UrbanKids Early Learning Centre next week.

On September 2, parents can attend and hear information from speaker Eric Hollis about how to respond to sexual behaviours in children and how to protect them from sexual abuse.

After hearing Eric speak recently, centre manager Nicola Ellery felt the information was so valuable more people should hear it.

She contacted Eric, who works at the Rotorua Sexual Abuse Centre, and asked him to speak at UrbanKids.

“He’s a really awesome speaker. Because we have quite a big centre I thought other people could come along and it would be beneficial.

“He said one in four girls, and one in six boys, experience some sort of sexual abuse in New Zealand, and it made me think ‘wow’.”

Burns victim in court A Mount Maunganui man who sustained severe burns when a methamphetamine lab exploded in April will appear in Rotorua District Court on October 17.

Michael Frederick Bonne, 57, is charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of precursor substances, possession of precursor equipment and possession of precursor material, arson and cultivating cannabis.

He appeared in Tauranga Registrar’s Court on Monday where he was further remanded on bail.

Mob drug case transferred A patched Mongrel Mob member arrested as part of a national drug bust which netted more than $380,000 worth of drugs and precursor chemicals has had his case transferred to Rotorua District Court and will appear on October 17.

Elijah Koro Kingi, 30, appeared in Tauranga Registrar’s Court on Monday charged with supplying a Class A controlled drug, conspiracy to possess a Class A drug for supply and possession of a Class A drug for supply.

Man admits BB shooting A 19-year-old Tauranga man has admitted to shooting a BB-gun to a group of intermediate students in Mount Maunganui.

Todd Doyle pleaded guilty to assault with a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday.

The charges relate to an incident on June 17 at Ranch Road in Mount Maunganui where Doyle shot a BB gun at group of schools students.

Doyle has been remanded on bail and will appear for sentencing on October 7.

Western Bay of Plenty Mayor Ross Paterson is starting a petition to bring synthetic cannabis sales licensing under local government control.

Concerned at the official licensing of outlets in Te Puke and Katikati, Ross wants district councillors to lobby the Government immediately after the election to make licensing a local decision.

The petition will give people two options relating to synthetic cannabis sales – they can support the status quo or join a group wanting the licensing decisions to be made by local councils, including the right to prohibit sales altogether.

30 CDs of previously unreleased material: alternative versions, live tracks, and a significant amount of previously unheard (outside rarefied collectors’ circles) songs.

And there seems no sign of it drying up any time soon. That’s what keeps Dylan fans on tender hooks. The man has been so relentlessly creative that there are still many undiscovered gems.

For instance, the out-takes from his ground-breaking 1966 album Blond on Blond - rock’s first double album - have never officially surfaced. Similarly unreleased is extra material from his gospel period, or a live collection from his “Neverending Tour” (1988 till now).

What the Bootleg Series Vol 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) offers is slightly different: out-takes from a 1971 double set so widely reviled that Rolling Stone started their review with the immortal phrase: “What is this shit?”

It was a fair reaction. The original Self Portrait is a mess, stretching from syrupy silliness – Dylan crooning “Blue Moon” - to the roughly awful, a category including “The Boxer”, where Dylan sings an

out-of-tune harmony with himself while failing to remember the words he used on the first vocal.

And it gets worse

A couple of years later, Dylan finally moved on from CBS. The label, in a move that many thought was close to blackmail, released leftovers from the original Self Portrait album under the title Dylan. I have a copy; you don’t want to hear it. It is the only one of his albums not currently available, though the tactic apparently did the trick as he quickly returned to the CBS fold (and gained full rights to all his unreleased material).

So it’s fair to say that a collection of yet more stuff from the Self Portrait sessions was not high on the average Dylan fan’s wish-list. When first mooted, everyone thought it must be a joke.

But no! It’s the real deal and the new collection (the 2CD version at least – there is also a “deluxe” 4CD edition) marks a significant improvement over the original, a feat made possible by adding in a few extra out-takes from Dylan’s previous (Nashville Skyline) and subsequent (New Morning) albums. But it’s the Self Portrait songs that really make you wonder again about Dylan’s propensity for leaving his best material on the studio floor.

There is a stunning reading of the traditional “Pretty Saro” which is possibly the finest bit of singing I’ve ever heard from the man; there’s a lovely piano take of “Spanish is the Loving Tongue; and there are half a dozen slices of perfect Americana, of which “Annie’s Going Top Sing Her Song” is my favourite. Amongst the alternative versions there’s a gorgeous slow “If Not For You”, a piano-backed “When I Paint My Mas-

There is also a fair amount of unnecessary stuff that is fun for collectors (“New Morning” and “Sign on the Window” with Al Kooper’s excessive instrumentation restored). Ironically, just as the original Self Portrait would have made an adequate single album, this would have made an outstanding one. At two CDs it may be just for fans.

But wait

Even more “just for fans” is the extended 4CD set. Costing $100 more than the 2CD set, it includes two extra things: a full version of Dylan’s ramshackle concert from the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival and the original Self Portrait remastered onto one disc.

The former has been kicking around fan circles for over 30 years (I first got a vinyl copy in 1979) and is in no way highly sought after. Because it was a pretty rubbish gig, though there is a certain amusement factor in hearing Dylan forget the words of “Like a Rolling Stone”. The latter? Well, it may be remastered, but that original review still holds pretty true...

IRON MAN 3 Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow - Dir: Shane Black Jokes tend to get a little tedious when you hear them for the fourth time. And since this film marks the fourth outing for Robert Downey Jr’s iteration of Iron Man you might begin to wonder if he’s getting past his use-by date. Good news then: with the importation of writer/director Shane Black the franchise has regained its freshness, even if the end seems somewhere in sight.

Black was the writer on many

of the eighties biggest action blockbusters, most notably the Lethal Weapon franchise. He has previously made one film of his own, the wonderful Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), a canny deconstruction of the action genre which gave a resurgent Robert Downey Jr his best (and first) role in years.

Like that film, Iron Man 3 is set at Christmas-time – presumably the release schedule changed – and opens with a

Iron Man 2 made the mistake of assuming that 10 guys fighting in suits would be 10 times more fun than just one. This film realises that Tony Stark is the most interesting thing, so strips him early of his powers and relies on the Downey charisma.

Resolution (****) is an intriguing backwoods indie that has played festivals and won the odd award. It starts with P-addicted Chris out in an isolated cabin shooting guns and falling apart. Nice guy best friend Michael visits to enforce handcuff-assisted cold turkey as a first step to rehab. But the longer the pair spend at the cabin, the weirder things get, with the discovery of strange manuscripts and videos. It’s an enigmatic film, well-acted and shot, with thoughtful dialogue and only very muted horror elements. In fact, calling episode of it a horror film at all is misleading. It’s more like an The Twilight Zone, and a good one at that.

Iconic battle of the sexes waged on stage Detour Theatre’s annual season of Shakespeare is back.

Director Devon Williamson is starting the season with the much-loved romantic comedy ‘The Taming of the Shrew’.

“Filled with romance, fierce tempers, scoundrels and shenanigans, this is riotous Shakespearean comedy at its best,” says Devon.

‘The Taming of the Shrew’ is possibly Shakespeare’s most madcap comedy, he

says. “Certainly, it is one of the most loved.”

In this comic battle of the sexes, a rich merchant announces his fair young daughter Bianca will remain unwed until a husband is found for her older sister, Katherina, a hellish shrew.

There is only one man with the courage and wits to attempt this impossible task – Petruchio – but can he tame the Shrew?

The play is full of eccentric characters, romance and hi-jinks made

famous by the 1967 film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Final countdown to Rising Stars event Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s Rising Stars Concerto Competition is on Friday, September 6, from 7pm at Tauranga Boys’ College’s Graham Young Youth Theatre.

The competition is designed to showcase the hugely talented young musicians in the Bay of Plenty, and below are three of this year’s finalists.

Janet Reid, 15, is in Year 11 at Bethlehem College. Born in Rotorua, she started learning to play the violin by the Suzuki method, with Robin Denize, at just five years old.

Janet passed her Grade 8 violin exams with distinction at 13, and gained her Advanced Certificate last year. She is now working towards an ATCL Diploma which she will sit at the end of this year. As well as violin, Janet learns singing and will sit her Grade 6 exam this year. She also plays trombone in the Bethlehem College Jazz Band.

Anna Wright, 16, is in Year 12 at Tauranga Girls’ College, and is the trombone finalist in the competition. Anna has been learning trombone for more than three years but in that time has progressed

quickly to become lead trombone player of the Tauranga Girls’ College Big Band.

She is also a member of Tauranga Girls’ and Boys’ colleges’ combined Jazz Combo, which won the award for Best Combo at the 2013 Youth Jazz Competition.

Anna’s performances at the competition saw her awarded the Rodger Fox Trombone Award for the ‘Most Outstanding Trombonist’. She has now been accepted as a member of the New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Anna Lee, 13, is the youngest finalist in 2013 competition (a contest designed for secondary school students within the Bay).

She is currently studying with Papamoa Urszula Kint, a graduate of the Warsaw University.

Anna recently returned from Italy and South Korea where she was very successful in international competitions. At the Viotti Valsesia Music Competition in Italy, Anna won her section with a mark of 96 out of 100. She then went on to play at the winners’ concert.

She has also won many competitions around New Zealand; and has attended master classes with Charles Castleman (USA), Leo Phillips (UK), and Donald Armstrong (NZ). In 2011 and 2012 Anna received the highest marks in Grades 6-8 Trinity exams.

She plans to continue studying the violin in the future.

New look Alpha at St Peters I love Alpha, it’s an opportunity for people new to the Christian faith, or with no Christian faith, to find out more.

I hate it when churches play ‘bait and switch’, offering one thing but then delivering something else. Alpha isn’t like that – what you see is what you get. It’s a course about Christianity, but you really are allowed to ask any question. We’ve had some people come through and become Christians, and others who don’t, but everyone goes away knowing a bit more.

We’ve implemented a world of new options for the Alpha series. Primarily, we are using the same Alpha content but with shorter talks delivered by a younger person, and spanning eight weeks rather than 10.

The first night is an Introductory Dinner, from 7pm on Saturday, September 7.

Discover if the Alpha course might be a way for you to explore some of the

big questions in life. Then start the eight-week course – it begins 6.30pm Wednesday nights, commencing September 11.

Alpha consists of four main parts, beginning with a meal every week.

This is followed by a video talk about an aspect of the Christian faith. We then break into small groups where we just discuss the talk – you don’t have to agree, you can ask questions and generally we want to know what people think. The final part is held on a Saturday; and is an opportunity to learn more about the Holy Spirit.
