RR winter survival guide It’s that time of year again when many RR readers are suffering SAD. This is Seasonal something Disorder.

We are so sad, we can’t even remember what the A stands for.

It’s something to do with too much winter and not enough sun. Whoa, hang on, you’re reading the Sun, so there goes that theory.

So it must be just the winter.

Not much we can do about that, whanau, except maybe wait. The Government should do something about it. But they never do. Self-help is the only option, and that’s why you have me.

So to cure SAD, here are some ideas: Get outside, go mad. Run on the beach, roll down a hill. Fly a kite, chase a dog.

Go fishing. That way, you can catch some sun, a few nicely angled reflected rays off the water and maybe put a feed on the table at the same time.

Great idea, except the Government is talking about cutting the snapper limit by a third. That is the most stupid thing I’ve ever heard, especially considering there is no proposal to cut commercial limits, and we’ve all seen the indiscriminate dumping of snapper that goes on in the commercial world, especially when it is by-catch or over their “quota”.

Personally, I think it’s a bit of bluff going on here. Gummint really just plan to cut the recreational limit to six, but are banging on about two or three, just so when they bring in six, we’ll all say “Phew, that was close”.

A more sensible idea: increase the minimum size limit from a puny 27cm to 35cm.

And stop targetting the biggest. We’ve banged on about this many times before.

It will put more juvenile fish back in the sea and leave the big breeders. And besides, a 27cm fish just isn’t worth filleting. Many fishos already have a voluntary size limit of 35-40cm.

Anyway the fun is in the outing, not the body count. Best way to fight SAD: Wrap up warm, get outside and get moving.

Catch some winter sun or rattle an old bike along Harbour Drive. Just not on the footpath, okay? Man, is that a story for another day.

...and politically corrected dialogue with taxi drivers

Meanwhile, isn’t it ironic that the same people protesting about the GCSB bill are likely the same ones lambasting a Southland man for racially abusing a taxi driver.

Invercargill had a major dose of the SAD, and hit the headlines this week thanks to a passenger. If the event, filmed in private wasn’t distributed on the internet and breached Mr Shuttleworth’s privacy, there wouldn’t have been half the fuss. Yes it was a racist rant. Yet when you think about it, the passenger has had some serious violations of his rights. He has not broken any law, but has been hung out to dry by public criticism.

Breach of privacy

The cameras are in place to deter and identify violence, yet there was none.

We see plenty of cases of racial abuse every day toward all New Zealanders but for some reason it isn’t news.

Right or wrong, Mr Shuttleworth has had his privacy violated by having a private conversation, recorded in a private situation, released without his approval to be judged in the kangaroo court of public opinion.

Yet, he has broken no law.

Isn’t this exactly the sort of breach of privacy and rights that the anti-GCSB bleaters object to?

So in case you are being filmed in a cab, and unknowingly have it broadcast nationwide, here’s our PC guide to avoid embarrassment.

Communicating with cabbies

Here are some politically correct options to consider.

We’d recommended starting the conversation with a polite, unassuming question to set a pleasant, non-confrontational position and tone for the duration of the trip, such as: “Good evening, how are you?”

We do not suggest calling the driver an

“Islam prick”. Avoid discussions about religion or race. Even if you have firm ideas about suitable religions for cab drivers, those thoughts are probably best left aired between you and your KKK pals.

“We don’t require your Muslim bull**** in this country” could be better phrased: “We appreciate that your religious beliefs may not necessarily concur with our own or our rights to adopt an atheist stance on these matters and the nation can function satisfactorily without such influences.”

Or if you really want to put the boot in: “You particular deity is ugly and his mother dressed him funny.”

Do not discuss immigration issues. This will only lead to trouble, especially if one of you has recently had dealings with immigration (or if you’re German, had your mansion raided by the SIS and the AOS and the LOL.) “F*** off back to where you come from” is probably not the best way to suggest your cab driver has taken a wrong turn somewhere. Try this: “I feel perhaps your journey may have taken a wrong direction, geographically speaking. At some point it may be advisable, in my humble opinion, for you to consider backtracking on your current course soon.”

Other options

Another option: “Your country of origin, while I’m sure it’s lovely at this time of year, does not rank highly on my list of preferred sources of personnel responsible for my transportation requirements.”

We are confident if you learn some of these PC phrases and use them during your travels, you will successfully avoid the unwanted attention of the race relations office and becoming an overnight Youtube sensation.

Simply the uproar is PC in action again. What the country should be up in arms about is things like the spy bill and the attack on the fourth estate by the security system of the Beehive and its drones.

Good God When I came to NZ in 1949 I was often called a Pommie bastard and told to go back the where I came from, when my reaction was to either deck the idiot or just ignore him rather than run snivelling to the press or police. Are we no longer a race of real men and women? What would the same PC brigade of scavengers of today’s society have said if someone made similar remarks to a German or Japanese person at the start of the second world war.

Come on NZ grow up and move into the real world.”

Leaky hurdle Repair soaks up restoration fund

Katikati’s treasured historic homestead is leaking – and volunteers are organising a builder to repair the building’s entire back exterior to protect its precious heritage.

Despite the work not being too costly, volunteers say it again holds them back from their main goal of restoring the homestead to its former glory.

“Half of the restoration [of the building] has been done but the other half is still to be done and the wall at the back of the homestead is actually an interior wall,” says Athenree Homestead Trust chair Trish Coates. “It wasn’t completely finished – it was sort of closed in [for future renovation] but over time it has not proved too watertight.”

The back exterior was boarded up when an old kitchen was removed

about 10 years ago. “When done it was probably envisaged the second stage wouldn’t be far behind – that was why it was temporarily patched up,” says Trish.

Wet weather has highlighted the leak – creating another barrier to further develop the homestead – originally built by Captain Hugh and Adela Stewart after they arrived on the Lady Jocelyn in 1878. Hugh’s brother George Vesey Stewart was founder of the Katikati Settlement.

Volunteer Don Fraser says when the kitchen was pulled off the building it was never properly sealed and has floor joists sticking out.

“Local builder Lloyd Bruce McGechie has stepped up and volunteered Matthews 021 dig 580 580 to fix it and we will drains so water doesn’t run underneath the building.”

“We don’t want this deterioration while we’re trying to get stage two’s restoration done.

“But obviously anything we end up having to pay for means we haven’t got that money to do stage two with.”

Trish estimates, with generous local business discounts, the repair will cost about $1000 – and hopes to get grants to cover it. “But it needs to be done urgently, so we have to delve into our cash fund and re-claim it back later.”

In the 1940s the homestead fell into disrepair and was re-purchased in 1986 by the Rapley family with an aim to restore it. Athenree Homestead Trust Benwas formed 1995.

Sheep die in brutal dog attack

Summerfest 2013 was a popular event with people in Tauranga.

A clash in scheduling will see two popular Tauranga events occur on the same day early next year.

Two dogs that fatally attacked 11 sheep on a rural Pyes Pa farm this week are awaiting their fate in the pound.

At around midday on Monday the two bordercollie cross dogs escaped from their compound and attacked the sheep on a neighbouring property on Pyes Pa Road. The dogs killed six sheep and badly injured another five – which were later euthanised.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council animal services team leader, Andrew Hope, says the two registered and micro-chipped dogs are in the pound until council’s investigation is concluded.

Courier ‘hero’ mourned

A Tauranga courier driver who died in a crash on the Lower Kaimais at the weekend is described as a community hero that will be sorely missed.

Graeme Roy Voyce, 52, died when the Rover MG he was driving collided with an oncoming car on State Highway 29 around 4pm on Saturday.

For the last three years Roy worked as a courier driver based in Tauranga. Courier Post Central Regional Manager, Dave Skarratt, says Roy was a “well-respected courier driver” who was passionate about his job and a pleasure to have around.

“Roy was a popular part of the team and you really couldn’t have asked for a better guy. He will be enormously missed by his customers and colleagues.”

City drivers face racial abuse

Victims of racial abuse are being advised to come forward following a torrent of abuse against different races in Tauranga City.

The call comes after Invercargill man Greg Shuttleworth made national headlines for a drunken racist rant at taxi driver Tariq Humayun. Today Tauranga Mount Taxis administrator Jacqui Coffey says these incidents are not uncommon with the company experiencing two or three taunts of racism a week – particularly at weekends when alcohol is involved.

Shut out over bar hours

The city’s draft local alcohol policy that will allow bars to stay open until 3am across the district is taking the next step towards public consultation.

Tauranga City Councillors resolutely fended off councillor Larry Baldock’s attempt to derail the joint council process and set closing times of 1am across the board this week.

The draft policy developed jointly by TCC and the Western Bay of Plenty District Council proposes maximum licensed hours of 7am until 3am across the city and Western Bay. Bars in Mount Maunganui currently have a closing time of 1am.

Creative Tauranga’s Summerfest and Tauranga Maori Business Association’s He Iwi Kotahi Waitangi Day celebrations are both planned for February 6, 2014.

While the clash means residents won’t be able to attend both events, organisers say it’s not an issue as they are aimed at different audiences.

Summerfest, an alcohol-free music event at Blake Park, has attracted more than 10,000 people in the last two years.

Last year’s event ran on February 2, while the first He Iwi Kotahi Waitangi Day was held in Papamoa on February 6 – with thousands attending, yet significantly less than Summerfest brought in.

Creative Tauranga chief executive Tracey Rudduck-Gudsell, who organises Summerfest, says next year’s event is being moved to February 6 - the same date as the inaugural festival in 2011.

Tracey isn’t concerned about the clash as she says Summerfest is aimed at a younger crowd.

“It [Summerfest] is for our young people.

The key message is that we are addressing this for families and the younger age group – our ‘tweenagers’ – and basically letting them have a day for themselves.”

Tracey says Creative Tauranga invited the Tauranga Maori Business Association to join with their event but the offer was declined.

“Everyone is quite happy and there’s no conflict.”

Tauranga Maori Business Association board member Pat Spellman says the TMBA originally created the event as there was nothing

for people to do on Waitangi Day. He says TMBA decided not to merge the two as members want to develop their own event.

“We [TMBA] have worked really hard to define what it is we do.

“It is about enhancing the local community for businesses and we are really going to try hard to be more business-orientated.”

He says planning for the He Iwi Kotahi Waitangi Day is still in its infant stages, but says the event and Summerfest are actually quite similar.

“If this year’s event was anything to go by it was almost a mini-Summerfest in a way, with live entertainment, kai stalls and community engagement.”

Both Pat and Tracey agree the clash will give people a choice of events to go to and hope residents won’t be disappointed.

New party numbers surpass 550 Strong support for the fledgling One Law for All political party has its leadership planning to apply to register as a political party in the next two weeks.

Tauranga area coordinator Robbie McGuinness says membership has grown to about 550 since its June 7 launch and the party will apply for registration when membership reaches about 700. The Electoral Commission requires 500 members.

“We want to be registered in case an early election is called, rather than waiting until we have chosen a leader.”

Robbie says there is strong support for the party’s stand that all New Zealanders are treated equally in law, regardless of race.

Support is coming mainly from the Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay and parts of Auckland where they are active. Robbie says they planned to stand as many candidates as possible in the next election, including in Tauranga, and says a national office has just opened in Auckland.

Robbie stresses it is not an attack on Maori.

“We are not against Maori per se – it’s the treatyists, the separatists, the activists and the corporate iwi who are using the treaty to get these settlements – but none of this reaches the ordinary Maori.”

The party’s policies include abolishing the Waitangi Tribunal, abolishing race-based seats and positions in central and local government, and stripping all references to the Treaty of Waitangi from legislation.

Swing into action A tennis club in Omokoroa is swinging into action with plans for four new courts getting underway earlier than members hoped for.

Acting treasurer/membership secretary Steve Wall, of the soon-to-be formalised Omokoroa Community Tennis Club, says the courts have been in Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s development plans for the peninsula for years.

In May, Steve and fellow members submitted to the Western Bay Council’s 2013/2014 annual plan, requesting new tennis courts.

“We didn’t expect to get them this year but the council has now agreed they have them in their plan for 2014/2015,” says Steve.

The need for new courts has grown with an increasing Omokoroa community, says Steve.

He says the council has suggested it will construct

four basic courts at the Western Ave-based sports grounds and the club will look to improve the courts by applying an artificial surface for better playing conditions.

WBOPDC recreation planner John Rauputu says the location of new courts will be subject to a review of Omokoroa Sports Ground Reserve Concept Plan, due soon.

“It will consider the location and viability of reserve activities, including tennis, and playground facilities.”

Steve hopes the courts will become a community facility, “not only for the retired folks”.

“We’ve got a number of young families moving into the area, so we want the club for everybody; and we’ll encourage juniors to play as well.”

They’re not your ordinary pirates Lock up you daughters and hide your jewels – the pirates are coming to town. This weekend a fleet of pirates are Taurangabound, but forget about mischief – this band of men are on a mission for good.

These pirates will be in traditional costume, but they will sail into the Western Bay on fire trucks and vintage cars rather than sloops and schooners and collecting donations for charity, rather than stealing your treasure.

Tauranga medical officer Les McLaren, who will join six other Charity Pirate fire engines on a fundraising road trip from Paeroa to

Mount Maunganui on Saturday, is excited about bringing the group to the Western Bay for the first time. Les says he expects the trip will raise about $2000 – and all money collected will go to the Western Bay of Plenty Blue Light charity.

“They do such a great job with everything they do to support young people with their programmes, so I thought they were a great cause. It’s not just discoes anymore.”

Western Bay of Plenty Blue Light coordinator Wendy Nicholls says all fundraising helps them support more young people with programmes under the community policing initiative that aims to cut youth crime and build a positive partnership with police.

for the Kids Gone Fishing day they are holding in November to encourage all families to get out and enjoy the day.

The pirates will be stopping along the way to shake the can at Waihi from 9.30am, with a water fight between fire trucks at Gil-

mour Reserve at 10am, then then another water fight after arriving at Katikati fire station at 11.30am.

along Tauranga’s Strand at 2.30pm. They will then head to Mount Maunganui beach at 3.25pm before another collection and water fight at Bayfair shopping centre at 4pm. The day winds up with a fun pirate dress up evening at Imbibe.

Tauranga paddlers top in New Zealand Despite catching colds just days before their international championships, Tauranga kayakers Anna and Shaun Higgins are still top New Zealand paddlers.

The pair returned from the ICF Under 23 World Canoe Slalom Championships in Slovakia last Friday after competing in the C1 and K1 categories.

Unfortunately, after catching a cold, Anna didn’t make her goal of competing in the semi-finals, but she says the trip has still been beneficial.

“I was a bit disappointed in my end result, as I didn’t put together a run on the course that I was really happy with. But, overall, the trip was good for my paddling and it kept me training hard during the New Zealand winter period,” says Anna.

Shaun was also disappointed with himself, with his boat touching two gates in his races which added an

“I wanted to at least make semi-finals which is the top 30, but I was three seconds off that. And I feel I could have easily made that,” says Shaun. “[But] besides the racing not going so well the experience gained was good.”

Shaun, 23, ranked 35th in the Under 23 world championships race and had the number one New Zealand boat in the class.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old sister Anna managed to grab the title of Top New Zealand Woman Paddler – which was a huge feat considering her health ailment was combined with her boat arriving six days late for her competition preparation. The delay meant Anna had to practise in a test boat before her own arrived in time for her first race in Europe, at the World Cup which he and Shaun competed in, in Germany.

Anna will get another chance at the world number one ranking if she is named in New Zealand’s Under 23 team again. She is set to begin training for the New Zealand selection races again in January. If she gets through, she will travel to Australia next April to compete.

Meanwhile, Shaun is taking six months’ leave from the sport after he has shoulder surgery this month. Depending on the success of his recovery, Shaun says he may travel to Maryland, USA, in September to compete at

Village wants friends The first ‘Friends of the Historic Village’ volunteer drive is inviting people to a meeting at the village next Thursday August 8, at 1.30pm.

The group is looking for communityminded folk to pull weeds, paint, make cups of tea or organise marketing to help turn around a city asset requiring hands-on treatment.

Nigel Barker is one of the volunteers and brings years of experience working for councils where he’s been responsible for organising work schemes and reserves maintenance.

“I’ve offered to put my time in, I’d like to give something to the community and put time into organising, co-ordinating, do some marketing,” says Nigel.

The Friends of the Village organisation is coming to life from many hours of behind the scenes support and effort by Tauranga City councillors Catherine Stewart and Murray Guy, says Nigel.

With the help of the volunteers, Nigel is convinced the village can become selfsupporting and even eventually make a return for the city.

“As I see it, in the past volunteers have gone into do things – you might have three different groups there on a Saturday – but no-one’s on-site making sure they are acknowledged with a cup of tea or coffee,” says Nigel.

“Volunteers eventually lose interest.

They don’t like putting their time in and [seeing] nothing happening.”

This Thursday’s meeting will be in the theatre opposite the front gate, with a follow up meeting at 3.30pm on August 15.

Nigel wants to bring the village back up to a standard of a family place that the community will be proud to go along to. “There’s heaps of room there,” says Nigel. “[it’s] Kiwi style with Tauranga flavour.”

Four crossings for Pilot Bay Pilot Bay’s fourth pedestrian crossing is approved and will be painted in before Christmas.

The crossing will be sited on The Mall next to the boat ramp carpark entrance at Pilot Bay after Tauranga City councillors approved the site this week.

Councillors had initially delayed the decision in April, to consider the best location in the busy corner.

TCC transportation manager Martin Parkes was asked whether the crossing will interfere with vehicle access to private property, how far the concrete kerb will intrude on traffic lanes, how many car parks will be lost, and why it

couldn’t be put on the corner of Adams Ave and The Mall. “We did look at the whole area,” says Martin. “This one site is simply the best, it’s the site where we lose the fewest car parks, plus it doesn’t affect driveways so much as other sites.”

Other crossings are to be sited on the Leinster Ave side of Commons Ave; between Grace and Pacific avenues, and at Prince Ave. The crossings will be half-paid for by the NZ Transport Agency. During the last three years three children have been injured in traffic accidents in Pilot Bay, two of them seriously.

One final 80 minutes is all that stands between the Chiefs securing back-to-back Super Rugby titles and a chance to silence a number of critics this weekend.

After edging past the Crusaders 20-19 in last week’s semifinal, the Chiefs will host the Brumbies in the final at Hamilton tomorrow.

The Brumbies secured their spot in the final with a hard-fought 26-23 victory against the Bulls in South Africa’s Pretoria.

Prior to their success last year, seeing them regarded as a team with explosiveness across the park, the Chiefs were a side with an inability to transform this talent into title-winning credentials. But a second title will see the franchise finally establish themselves as a Super Rugby powerhouse.

If they manage to produce such

a feat, they will become the fourth franchise to earn consecutive titles following the Blues, Crusaders and Bulls (South Africa).

In the lead up to tomorrow’s final, Chiefs flanker Sam Cane says there is a buzz within the squad to replicate last season’s Super Rugby excitement for themselves and the region.

“There is a pretty excited feeling with the boys and a bit of an edge as well, so we have just got to get this week right because we have worked pretty hard for the last eight months.”

Approaching finals week is about remaining calm and relaxed while sticking to the processes and game plan which has brought the team this far – but it is no harm to draw on last year’s experience, admits Sam. The final has also thrown an extra layer of mystery with the two sides coming up against each other for the first time since the Chiefs’ 29-22 win in round four last

year – meaning both sides will be scrambling to analyse any available footage of the opposition.

“They like to kick a lot and will only play rugby if they are in their attacking half,” says Sam. “So we might have to be a bit more patient and wait for opportunities to impose some physicality on them. Because we think if we can take them up front we will gain a lot.”

Having lost only once at home this year, falling short 31-23 to the Queensland Reds, the Chiefs will take a wealth of confidence heading into the final at home – which is becoming somewhat of a fortress for other sides to try and conquer.

“There have been plenty of text messages and plenty of people wanting tickets, so hopefully there is half of Reporoa there,” says Sam. “The Hamilton crowd has become the 16th man for us and we absolutely love playing there.”

Mowed down with help A call for help to keep Katikati Heritage Museum’s lawns down has paid off after manager Paula Gaelic asked The Weekend Sun to get the word out when its ride-on mower was stolen.

“The ‘Scissor Hands’ article in The Weekend Sun proved more than worthwhile,” says Paula. “The story regarding the stolen ride-on and having to cut the lawn with scissors worked a treat.”

She says strong support from the community board and public has helped solve the issue before it became a problem.

Market for jobs

Youth jobs boost Plans to help Katikati’s young people into work in the area will be discussed at a public meeting on August 8.

The meeting has been organised

by Western Bay of Plenty District Council and Careers NZ, which are aiming to cut youth unemployment in Katikati to zero.

Katikati community board chair Bruce Duske was among those interested in finding our more about the project, saying it was common for young people to have to leave town to find work.

Western Bay council’s economic development officer Kathy Webb says the programme planned to boost job opportunities for school leavers in the town – copying Otorohanga’s success at tackling youth unemployment.

Otorohanga Mayor Dale Williams will talk about his town’s experience at the meeting along with Maree Thomas from EmployNZ, who runs a programme that helps school-leavers transition into work.

The meeting is at Katikati Heritage Museum on August 8 from 12pm1.30pm.

The expanded Te Puke New World opened to fanfare this week – with the 21 new staff members who “clocked on” for the first time being among the most excited to see the doors open at the Jocelyn St store on Tuesday.

Supermarket owner-operator Jon Morrison thinks it is great to be able to offer more jobs in the town, saying there was “huge” interest in the new jobs, which attracted hundreds of applications.

Jon could not comment on

whether the strong interest reflects challenges finding work in the area.

Along with the 21 new positions – which were a mix of full and part-time roles – he says about five others have been taken on for new roles during the last three months in preparation for the expansion. This took the supermarket’s total number of jobs to about 95.

The new supermarket is almost

three times larger than the old Oxford St store.

At 2590m2 in size, Te Puke New World is almost three times bigger than the old store and will have plenty of car parking, says Foodstuffs property development general manager Angela Bull.

Youth unemployment could soon be a memory in Te Puke if a group of business leaders and support agencies have their way.

Te Puke Fast Forward chairman Graeme Walker is excited about helping the area’s young people get ahead in the district – by copying Otorohanga’s recipe that has seen youth unemployment in the district almost disappear.

While Graeme does not believe Te Puke has a worse youth unemployment problem than the national average of 13.1 per cent (of 15-24 years-olds not in education, employment or training) he says the business promotion group wants to get active in dealing with the issue.

Te Puke Fast Forward’s members were inspired to do something after hearing Otorohanga Mayor Dale Williams speak; and hearing Te Puke High School careers advisor Jan Neal talk about what some Australian towns were doing.

“It’s about giving local young people local job opportunities so they don’t have to go away looking for jobs, or not being able to find a job and wandering around creating social problems.

“We thought let’s get cracking, let’s start something.”

Graeme says the Te Puke Youth Employment Programme group, which formed last month, is now going out to businesses to ask what skills they need young people have to be able to offer them work.

When Dale asked the same question in Otorohanga he found out major employer Giltrap Engineering needed a lot of diesel mechanics, so he convinced Wintec to offer training in town.

“Obviously there will be different demands – for example the kiwifruit industry could be needing quality controllers for packhouses – but I’m sure there will be a strong trades focus.”

Graeme says the next steps will be chasing up funding to support the programme, getting training organisations on-board and convincing employers to guarantee jobs to young people who complete the training.

“That guarantee’s the key thing.

Then they know they are not wasting their time.”

In the last five years the proportion of unemployed, aged 18-24, has increased by 50 per cent in the Bay of Plenty region. And the jump from 20.2 per cent (of those on the benefit) to 30.8 per cent is ahead of the national change from 21.5 per cent to 29.5 per cent (a 37 per cent rise).

Prompted by two youth suicides within days, Otorohanga Mayor Dale Williams set out on a mission 10 years ago to ensure no young lives were wasted in his town.

These days Dale spends a lot of time sharing his success in other communities and the Te Puke Fast Forward chairman Graeme Walker is among those who have been inspired to take action after he recently touring Otorohanga’s trade training centre and youth activity hub, which is at the heart of the programme’s success in the town.

To help create work opportunities for youth, Dale started talking to businesses in his area about what skills they would need to have to get a job. Armed with that knowledge he got tertiary providers to set up training in the King Country town. Otorohanga’s registered unemployment for under-25 year olds since November 2006 has been consistently in single figures – and the lowest local government area in the country.

Designs on success Fashion students at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic have shown they know how to tailor designs of success with three earning top honours at the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards.

The awards, which include two section winners and a merit prize, has seen all three of the thirdyear fashion students who entered the competition recognised in what head fashion tutor Donna Dinsdale calls a thrilling success.

Donna says the awards are a significant boost to a young designer’s career prospects and have been

earned with great designs, created with research and technical expertise.

Two of the awards were won by students who come from Saudi Arabia – and contrary to popular Western belief – share the same interest in fashion beyond their head scarfs.

Reem Aba Alkhayl, who was the overall winner in the Carvin Streetwear – Collections Award, says almost every Saudi Arabian woman she knows wants to be “the most fashionable woman around”.

Tucked between hangars on a field behind Classic Flyers, a temporary base camp for 100 Royal New Zealand Air Force personal has sprung up this week.

After six months of flying at Ohakea the pressure has stepped up for the nine pilots under intense training in Tauranga for Operation Wise Owl. The pilots are taking to the Western Bay sky three times a day under a forceful regime. For the pilots to advance and have a chance of earning their ‘Wings’ they must pass this section, then another 12 months training to complete.

“It’s pretty tough,” says Ohakea chaplain Chris Purdie, “but the instructors are also under a lot of pressure with the heavy flying schedule.”

they are practising flying four planelengths behind each other, with instructors at their side assessing them, ready to take over the controls if needed.

“It’s quite a high pressure experience, you are learning and taking in so much,” says Flight Lieutenant Nick Dawson, describing the training camp he completed three years ago.

After The Weekend Sun prepared for a flight with Nick, word came back the plane warning lights had come on so the flight is delayed.

“It’s just the nature of aviation. If there is a red light we definitely want to know what’s going on,” says Chris.

In an attempt to improve and enhance Bay business’ emergency management plans, SILC is organising a business continuity workshop in October.

SILC Ltd provides support for people who live with intellectual, physical and acquired disabilities as well as complex health, sensory and age-related challenges. These people are vulnerable at the best of times – let alone during a civil emergency, says SILC Charitable Trust business development manager Charlene Watene. Charlene says the workshop is the perfect platform to inform people of the risks of a civil emergency and how important it is to be prepared.

“Last week’s earthquakes in Wellington should be a timely reminder for us here in the Bay to check how prepared we are for an earthquake; and given our coastal location the threat of a tsunami is real,” says Charlene.

A member of the New Zealand Disability Society network, SILC decided to take up the initiative and bring Brent Marsh from Spectrum Care in Auckland to the Papamoa Sport and Recreation Centre after delivering the workshop nationwide.

“His workshops offer vital information about the implications of a civil emergency situation and what organisations that support the most vulnerable can do to prepare and plan for these emergencies.”

“We thought ‘hey look the earthquakes just happened in Wellington’ and it’s just about letting people know.”

In a real hands-on approach, the six-hour long seminar takes on a practical element to see how businesses will respond if faced with a civil emergency, including drawing up contingency plans and thinking on the spot.

“It’s realistic seminars that look at what might happen in the regions, so for us it is focussing on earthquakes and tsunamis.

He gets them to about their business capabilities and how they will operate in a state of emergency.

“For people with disabilities and age care, where they rely on care or support staff for mobility issues, it’s very important.”

A Tauranga animal welfare inspector says he would support a proposal to limit the amount of cats people can own.

The Rangitikei District Council is looking to vote on a proposal which would see households banned from owning more than three cats aged three months or older.

The proposal came about from a suggestion made in a report on animal control bylaws.

Tauranga inspector Jason Blair says he would support a similar proposal for Tauranga – but only after careful consideration to both the number restriction and how it would be enforced.

He says there are many good owners capable of owning and caring for more than three cats at any time.

“During the hotter months I will visit house after house where I find kittens that are infested with fleas and have varying degrees off cat flu or other illness – and are failing to thrive. Disease spreads quickly where animal numbers are high. These animals will often go without treatment and can suffer, sometimes severely, as a result.”

Jason says responsible owners de-sex their animals to prevent the population from expanding; and keep the number of animals within their budget for both food and unexpected veterinary expenses.

Inspiring action in words A sell-out crowd for the inaugural TEDx Tauranga talk of inspirational business leaders on Tuesday has organisers already planning another small event in November.

Ideas galore

Head organiser Sheldon Nesdale says the event was a huge success and the team is excited about building on the momentum they had achieved in two months since deciding to host a Tauranga event.

Sheldon says the speakers all had inspiring, thought-provoking stories to share – in keeping with the ‘ideas worth spreading’ motto behind TED talks – that has seen the non-profit event grow with hundreds of events

held around the world each year.

What to consider when borrowing Back in February I wrote an article on whether or not to fix or float your mortgage – and whether to choose fixed or floating or a combination of both.

Five months on, and with last week’s official cash rate announcement, it is understandable that everyone is focused on when the OCR will move – not if. But for borrowers that’s only part of the equation, and it’s necessary to remember how the market works.

In its most basic form, a short-term home loan rate, that’s anything out to 18 months or two years, is priced off the OCR. The OCR has not changed interest rates, and the impact of this for Kiwi borrowers is the possibility of rates increasing. This is what we have been seeing during the last month or so.

In this economic cycle there is a new factor that borrowers need to think about.

I would like to quickly investigate this thought process and highlight one possible flaw.

To do this investigation let’s use some assumptions. Let’s assume the average cost for house insurance is $80 per month – this is house only not including contents or cars or anything like that. If you have a mortgage with a bank, it is most likely you will have to pay for this as a condition of the mortgage. For this $80 a month you could potentially claim in the worst case scenario for total replacement of the house, only for let’s assume $250,000 which is not a bad average here in Tauranga.

Let’s compare that with income protection. Let’s assume you or your partner is aged 35, male, with an admin-based job earning $60,000 per year. You probably have a mortgage and maybe one or two children; and therefore have a potential need. The cost to have an income protection benefit, paying $33,000 net per annum potentially all the way through to 65 (for example, 30 years), adds up to a potential payout of $990,000 for the grand total, approximately $40 per month in the first year.

If you wanted to pay the same premium for that entire period the cost would be $63 per month in the first year with only inflation adjustments to be applied to the premium plus more importantly the benefit.

Exploring career opportunities

A host of events highlighting career and training opportunities in the Bay of Plenty begin next week as the annual Western Bay @ Work showcase gets underway.

First up and keynote on the event schedule is the Tauranga Rotary Careers Expo and Priority One Future Focus Business Showcase at ASB Arena next Friday and Saturday.

Leading tertiary and training providers will exhibit alongside some of the Bay’s most innovative industries. Priority One CEO Andrew Coker says for the first time the two events will be staged side by side in the one arena.

“Students, school leavers, in fact anyone interested in exploring their career options, will be able to find out about the diverse and exciting career options available in the Bay in key sectors where we have competitive advantages.

“They can then talk to the career and training providers to identify the best pathways to get there.”

The good and the very bad Greetings Sunners, The big news this week is the protests against the testing of party pills on animals.

Hundreds of people turned up on Tuesday to march from The Strand, joining thousands in different cities across the country.

Good on you protestors! How ridiculous this notion is.

I wonder, will it happen the other way around, and us dogs can use people to test drugs for the recreational purposes of dogs?

It’s a sad world we live in, when animals are used for testing drugs just so a bunch of loser potheads can get a buzz.

This is the most ridiculous piece of nonsense this year.

If dopesters and partygoers want to get high, test the substances on them.

I’m sure there would be an impressive queue of drug losers lining up to volunteer.

Here at Newshound HQ, we say let them sign up, relinquishing any rights to ACC or on-going medical care, to be the guinea pigs for their fellow loser dopes.

SunLive online commenter “Blessed” put it well this week: “Ban them! Don’t need legal highs, there is enough probs with alcohol, people need to get used to having a good time without ‘legal highs’... Stop the sale all together, Government stop wasting time and money.”

In other news, here’s a shout out to my feline friend Noah. You all know I’m not the biggest fan of cats, but after this week’s nonsense, a feline’s happy ending is welcomed good news.

Noah is a nine-year-old Persian with an eye condition which will eventually see him lose all of his sight.

He featured as Tauranga SPCA’s Pin Up Pet in The Weekend Sun last week, appealing for a new forever home.

We were thrilled to learn that after the Sun came out on Friday, Noah’s original owner, who had lost him some time ago, saw his print debut, called up the SPCA and took him back home. Awesome news Noah!

Defeating the chewing habit Question: How do I stop my dog from chewing the furniture in the house?

Answer: If your dog is a ‘chewer’ then the first question is this: Are they bored?

Often, times that dogs chew furniture is when there is nothing else for them to do. You need to consider these points: Is your dog getting enough exercise? Are they getting enough positive interaction and mental stimulation?

Secondly, you need to ‘dog-proof ’ your home to make this chewing habit is a less available option. Keep cables, shoes and other chewable items out of reach.

Thirdly, you need to actively participate in redirecting your dog's focus towards some positive and engaging activities.

You can help this along by playing with them; using toys they are encouraged to chew (a stuffed kong or tug toy).

If they are chewing at night then you

will need to crate train them (teaching them to accept a crate or cage as a familiar, safe location), until they’ve fully mastered what they can and cannot chew.

You can help this along by making sure they love their crate, and that it’s not viewed as a place of exile.

Be patient, this habit doesn't go away overnight. For some younger dogs it can take a little time, so be sure to continue to positively redirect the unwanted chewing onto their chew toy.

Considered becoming a vet or vet nurse?

life. They assist with breeding and birthing, vaccinate them against disease, and treat them when they are sick or injured. They do x-rays and ultrasounds, analyse blood samples, dispense medications and conduct surgeries.

Canine agility and skill on show Competitive canines boasting coordination and agility will be on show this weekend at the Tauranga and Mount dog clubs’ Triple Championship Jumpers Event in Papamoa.

The public is warmly invited to attend the shows, where more than 300 dogs from throughout the country will be put to the test in the fun, social and bustling event.

Tauranga Dog Club agility trainer Jocelyn Jensen says the shows are always enjoyable and often prompt a lot of interest from residents keen to get their own dogs into agility training.

Both Tauranga and Mount clubs hold weekly canine agility classes, where dogs and their owners work together through different levels, often training to compete in shows like this weekend’s – held throughout the country.

Jocelyn says agility classes are thoroughly enjoyable for dog and owner, and are a great source of fun, physical and mental fitness, and confidence.

“There’s a great range of people. We

have all sorts of dogs and people aged 14-82.

“The dogs are having fun and learning stuff, and it’s enjoyable for the owners. It keeps you fit, and your mind active.”

Agility training can begin when dogs are 12 months old, but before then Jocelyn advises all puppies should complete obedience training.

Five-week obedience courses are run at the clubs, teaching puppies aged three months and older basic training/ manners, including sitting, waiting, lead work and good behaviour around other dogs.

Jocelyn says obedience training is a crucial element for young dogs, and encourages all owners to complete the classes. “That’s where it all starts, that’s where good ownership is and that’s where you get good grounding.”

This weekend’s show is at Papamoa Pony Club from 8.30am on both days.

Inline podium performance Since Dani Maunder got her first taste of hockey as an eight-yearold the self-professed “ridiculously competitive” sportswoman has never been far from the action.

After trying her hand at fast-paced inline hockey, she has split her focus between chasing balls around turf and a polished court – saying she loves the speed and physicality of the sport despite the risk of greater injuries on the unforgiving surface.

“My brother and his friends started play-

ing inline [hockey] and I liked the rough and tumble, and fast pace of inline, so I started playing too and got hooked from there.”

Last week Dani returned with the Kiwi team from playing at the 2013 FIRS World Inline Hockey Championships in the US from July 14-20, where the senior women team won bronze of 19 teams, behind the big time US and Canada, as well as winning the America National Cup – against the best clubs and visiting national teams.

While Dani is personally disappointed

not to have won gold, she says the team as a whole are proud of their achievement which provides “solid building blocks” for the future.

“We expected highly of ourselves, however, now looking back, our achievement is pretty good really considering we haven't competed in a world event for quite some time.”

Being a minor sport the lack of competition can be a problem, with Dani saying while there is a school league operating in Tauranga, the senior competition is struggling in the region. As result, she plays in Hamilton which has the closest women’s team.

“It’s a great sport and I’d definitely love to see a lot more people get involved in it here. In some places it’s really popular – in New Plymouth it’s massive and it’s quite big in Hamilton.”

But Dani is definitely not resting on her bronze medal laurels. Her goal is firmly set on winning the world cup –“it has to be a world cup gold”. She also shares her love for the sport with a new generation of players as coach, something she finds “incredibly

The public are about to be invited to provide input on the first joint district Local Alcohol Policy, after Tauranga City Council approved the draft this week.

The draft policy proposes 3am closing for all bars across the Western Bay of Plenty, and also suggests introducing a one-way door rule for patrons from 2am, which will mean early morning drinkers cannot “bar hop” after 2am.

The policy also looks to puts limits on bottle shops and to limit how close liquor outlets can be to schools and early childhood centres.

During the week, Tauranga City Councillors fended off a last minute attempt by councillor Larry Baldock, to derail the joint city council/district council process, who tried introducing a last minute change to set the bar closing time to 1am.

“The time to consider this properly is once all submissions have been heard from the public, not just one person. Let’s give them the opportunity to persuade us to change our views, if that is the case,” says councillor Wayne Moultrie.

If both the Western Bay of Plenty and Tauranga councils endorse the draft joint policy this week, calling for public submissions will be the next step.

The Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 (which became law last year and replaced the Sale of Liquor Act 1989), will allow Local Alcohol Policies to come into effect in December.

But the earliest date in which the joint Tauranga/ Western Bay Local Alcohol Policy can take effect is February 2014 – if there are no delays in the process.

On the current timetable Tauranga City Council’s hope to have heard submissions, arising out of the public consultation process, and complete deliberations before the October 12 local body elections.

Call for ‘fresh meat’

Riding made safe, easy and exhilarating Jumps, flips and fancy tricks – BMX and scooter riders can learn how to fly on two wheels this week as part of Play in the Bay’s Move it Month.

Sport Bay of Plenty’s promotion resumes this weekend with events encouraging people to get active, including a postnatal fitness programme, badminton and introduction to pa-kua martial arts.

Dialed Indoor Skatepark event organiser Kate Thomas says the six week BMX and scooter school at the Triton Ave centre offers riders a great chance to improve their riding, including some tips and tricks.

Class sizes have been set at a maximum of 10 to ensure everyone gets their share of attention – and instructors will teach each rider suitable tricks based for their skill level.

Kate says tricks taught will depend on the children’s skill levels but

for scooter riders, could include 180 flats, tail-whips and bri-flips or for BMXers, could include a superman, no-handers or bar-spins.

The six week courses begin with a session on maintenance and safety, before going on to cover rider etiquette and skill development “It offers a great chance to learn everything you need to know to ride safely and have fun.”

Both courses are suited for children from seven to 12, with all participants needing to bring a helmet, covered shoes and a BMX or scooter. Both courses run from 4.30pm-5.30pm with the scooter school staring on Wednesday, August 7 and the BMX on Thursday, August 8. Details: 574 5923 ($80 course charge).

Chairperson Nadine Morrison says it doesn’t matter whether you can skate or not, because new recruits go through a comprehensive 20-week course where they are taught all the skills they need to play Roller Derby in a completely supportive environment.

“I could hardly stand on my skates when I started 18 months ago, now I’m totally engrossed in the sport.”

Mount Militia, established in 2010, is the Bay’s largest Roller Derby League and comprises of skaters from Te Puke, Papamoa, Mount Maunganui and Tauranga.

Men and women are invited to join; and for the first time 15-18 year olds are also being encouraged to sign up.

Nadine says roller derby is one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

“Our league is growing from strength to strength. We ran our first intraleague series earlier this year, and from that our Dangerous Curves Travel Team was selected.”

She says the sport is incredibly rewarding and encourages everyone to give it a go.

“This is definitely a competitive sport, but it’s also very social and [is] great fitness.

“It’s just such a supportive group, it doesn’t matter where you’re from, your background, age, or your ability.”

The club has also started a new initiative, supporting different community groups each month.

“To date, we have collected and donated food items to the Tauranga Food Bank, participated in the Women’s Refuge annual collection; and we are currently collecting donations for Tauranga SPCA.”

Tauranga to host ICC World Cup qualifiers Tauranga has been named as one of seven venues to host ICC Cricket World Cup qualifiers early next year.

The month long tournament in January and February 2014 will be played at the Bay Oval at Blake Park.

The 10 participating CWCQ 2014 nations will battle for two places in the ICC Cricket World Cup CWC to be hosted in New Zealand and Australia

in 2015. The participating nations include Afghanistan, Canada, Hong Kong, Kenya, Namibia, Nepal, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, Uganda, United Arab Emirates.

The Bay Oval will join New Plymouth, Hamilton, Christchurch, Rangiora, Lincoln and Queenstown as venues for the CWCQ 2014.

Bay of Plenty Cricket Trust general manager Kelvin Jones is thrilled.

“We are rapt, we appreciate that NZ Cricket and the

ICC have taken a bit of a risk when we didn’t have a completed ground, but we have proven that we could get there. For us it is another step up in the facility.”

Kelvin says the exposure that comes with international level qualifiers will boost cricket and the Bay’s profile.

“It helps to put cricket on the map, and it’s a step along the way to greater things – we are still hoping to be involved in warm up games for the Cricket World Cup.

Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby says events like the tournament bring extra vibrancy and excitement to the city and residents.

“Tauranga is already buzzing at this time of year and we will now have even more entertainment options for the coming summer.

Cooking dinner just once a week Tracking down recipes proved difficult, but a friend Meal times in a flat full of bachelors in an old house are sometimes hectic, and all sorts in Malaysia acquired a Nonya cookbook which takes pride of place in my cookbook collection. of unusual customs are observed.

Adapted from the book ‘Nonya Cooking: The Easy Like the gym freak, who devours eight boiled eggs a day, to the couch sloth, who always leaves part two of his meal in the microwave. Each member of the house cooks and eats their own style at about the same time in a kitchen the size of large closet; and they’re often dependant on a tight budget. Sometimes, it’s all too much cooking a small amount just for myself, so I often cook a larger quantity and reheat for the next few days.

Some dishes can be a disaster when reheated, but fortunately I know some meals that improve with age.

Curries with their blend of spices which also act as a preservative often last a long time and taste better as they age. A few weeks ago I gave you a rooster curry recipe, principally based on a Nonya chicken curry dish. Nonya cuisine is basically a blend of Chinese, Malaysian and Thai; and has some refreshing methods and interesting flavours. Having experienced it first-hand in Melaka and Penang, I know.

Yummy yams Ingredients: 2kg skinned pork belly ¼ cup oil 1 disc palm sugar Sea salt 6 cloves garlic 3 large onions 10-15 candlenuts or macadamia 20 dried chillies 2 Tbsp belacan powder (substitute prawn paste) 2 Tbsp galingale powder 1 Tbsp lemon grass powder Method: After the pork has been skinned and washed, chill the meat. This makes it easy to slice across the grain. When chilled cut into 1cm thick slices, ready for cooking.

Heat a little oil and fry off the pork in batches in a hot pan or wok for about five minutes. This helps evaporate some of the moisture from the pork ahead of the next step.

Blend all spices, nuts, chillies, onion and garlic until fine. Heat the remaining oil, lower the heat and cook off the paste for about 10 minutes until the oil seeps out again. Stir well to prevent burning.

Now the hard part: add the pork and continue to cook, stirring almost all the time. The dish will change colour as the pork and spices continue to render and develop.

Continue stirring and cooking over a low/moderate heat until the colour is deep red/rich brown (about 30 minutes).

Season with the palm sugar and sea salt. This goes well with bread, mash, or rice.

Eating seasonal local produce can start to become boring at this time of year – with the same old winter staples parading over your plate.

If you want to be truly sustainable about your diet and eat only produce grown your area, you need to start by crossing all the tropical fruit and summer produce flown in from offshore. This leaves you rotating through a medley of brassicas, leeks, pumpkins and other winter favourites.

Yams, traditionally only available for a short prespring season, are perhaps the most exciting item at the greengrocers.

New Zealand yams might look like gnarled up toes but cooked to perfection they add a sweet element to many winter dishes. While many have had yams as a roast vegetable, they can be served equally well mashed, boiled, baked or fried. Yams are also nice grated raw into salads and coleslaws.

It’s a great time to discover this underrated vegetable while yam season lasts.

Another round up for a pound up Following last week’s column, the next enthralling episode of full council consideration of funding for flagship events was an event in itself. It’s election time – and some seeking an election issue – is one possible explanation for some of the comments made in a molehill/mountain/marathon/ debate/discussion. To recap, elected members had decided a year or so ago to revisit policy on ratepayer funding assistance to flagship events, designed to attract visitors to Tauranga with the intention of providing economic stimulation to our business sector (a significant contributor to the rate take). But, for a number of reasons, this review hasn’t happened yet. It will now – and before the forthcoming election. The six flagship events presented their plans for their respective events in public excluded, although there was nothing in any of their presentations that was commercially sensitive (other than their balance sheets, in my opinion). I raised this after the presentations – and it was agreed that in future the presentations would be in open. This

would enable the media to convey the good work of the applicants and their methodology to you out there in ratepayer land.

The thrust of the four elected members, opposing granting the Garden and Arts Festival $30,000 and the Tauranga Arts Festival $25,000, was that their balance sheets were showing a surplus. A surplus that can easily disappear should the event fail – for instance, if bad weather prevails. Ratepayer funding support is only part of flagship status. Events applied for, and were granted, Council Flagship Event status, which implies the council supports enabling these various events to use that status to attract significant other funding and support.

Element of integrity

There is an element of integrity and loyalty expected – both to and from council – in this. And it would be totally inappropriate to pull the rug out from under any of them at this late stage. So, on a vote of 7-4, the funding for all flagship events was approved with Murray Guy, Catherine Stewart, Rick Curach and Bill Grainger dissenting.

Mayor Stuart Crosby gave a serving, outlining his strong views of why the council should support the events, saying he couldn’t believe some of the opposing comments he had heard and that these comments illustrated why this whole matter needed to be taken out of elected member’s hands. There has been a proposal from a small group of city philanthropists to take over event funding and contributing money, to amalgamate with ratepayers and other charitable funding and greatly increase seed money to attract new events and support existing events. This will form part of the forthcoming review, which will also consider: how events get flagship status, when that status might cease, what notice would be given, whether grants continue, should support be loans, guarantees against loss, and whether a significant increase in funding from all sources is warranted. Some people see events as an employment opportunity.

Not taken lightly

Others battle on in a voluntary group with some organisational professional assistance, and many other issues to be considered.

This shouldn’t be taken lightly. As one example, it has been stated that the Easter Jazz Festival is the catalyst that sees most of The Strand entertainment centre get through the winter financially.

There is significant employment and investment down there, all paying rates, wages, taxes and fees.

Other cities are after some of our events too – and they have bigger cheque books. But integrity and

loyalty to Tauranga mean there’s no threat in that quarter. All in all, this matter needs urgent attention but just before an election may not be the best timing – c’est la vie. As chairman of the Airport Committee, along with other members, I was delighted with the good news of a surplus of $1.6 million – $84,000 above budget. Before the naysayers rush into print, it is acknowledged that the majority of this is provided by prudent management of leased land surrounding the airport. Notwithstanding, this operation is a council success story and community asset, aided significantly by input from our three committee members from the private sector with aviation backgrounds – Andrew Gormlie, Phillip Thompson and Frank Wright. The others are three elected members – myself, David Stewart and Catherine Stewart.

Aircraft movements were 74,098 for 2012 – down from a high of 105,766 in 2008. Those were the heady days of pilot training for offshore students. Landing fees generate enough income to fund half the runways costs – with depreciation on the main runway being significant – and we maintain a great balance between recreational activities, ranging from parachuting (once you jump out of a plane you technically become a plane requiring supervision in the airspace), gliding, micro lights, air shows, war birds, helicopters, gyrocopters, aero club small commercial aircraft and larger commercial aircraft. All in the middle of the city and the open land of the airport it is a good asset in creating a buffer between conflicting land users of residential/commercial. At council’s Projects and Monitoring Committee

we received a petition to remove signs banning cyclists from the access way alongside the road on Harbour Drive, Otumoetai. Some pedestrians had complained about some cyclists, and staff had taken action to put the signs up. Initial reaction from most elected members was to take the signs down, to allow cyclists, but ask for care and understanding between conflicting users.

Planning is paramount

A report will come to elected members outlining issues. Treasury reports finances as budgeted, but increasing interest rates in 201415. Careful planned management of debt will be paramount, along with no unplanned spending on nice-to-haves, if we are to continue to control finances and levels of service. Very strong tummy muscles are needed with the ability to decline and/or defer popular demands from the community.

Rates revenue funded debt on June 30, 2013, is $230.1million with total external debt at $378.9 million. Of that $193.4 million is non-ratepayer funded. An interesting editorial in the National Business Review stated organised towns and cities are well placed (for economic growth), as places such as Auckland, Tauranga and New Plymouth demonstrate.

That’s right. And with growth comes demand for infrastructure; and one sensible way to fund that infrastructure is carefully managed debt. This shares the burden of infrastructure costs more fairly across the generations into the future, who will benefit.

Paddling ping pong with Pansy There are some things you are never too old for, and Pansy Pattie is proving ping pong is one of them.

The 79-year-old Pyes Pa table tennis enthusiast is perhaps Tauranga’s closest equivalent to those featuring in ‘Ping Pong’ – a light-heated documentary about a group of players aged 80-plus vying to become world champions.

The film was released in Tauranga this week and Table Tennis Tauranga committee member Roy North is expecting a growing interest in the game.

Pansy may not be aspiring to be a world champion, but the avid member of both Tauranga and Matua clubs, who plays in two social club sessions a week, has raked up her own share of success including two third places in the New Zealand Masters Games’ doubles event.

Ask her what she loves about the game and Pansy says it’s the combination of the fun exercise and the social element.

And while she will give as good as she gets, when up against the most serious players, Pansy says she’s not overly competitive.

“But it’s a great game. Anyone can play it if they put their mind to it.”

Roy would love to hear from anyone wanting to have a go at the sport.

Broadcasting from July last year POPS FM – short for Pupils of Omokoroa Point School – boosts student confidence and offers an integrated way of learning subjects, says acting school principal Vicki Knell.

“I think the benefits are enormous – it gives them real context for their learning in oral language. We have students in a news team.

They’re responsible for listening for news items and bringing them into shows – it’s a real integrated learning curriculum,” says Vicki, who first proposed a radio station for the school in 2000. “[Back then] we didn’t really have the space to put it.” Last year, the schoolhouse’s tiny bathroom was turned into a radio station, and after collecting broadcasting equipment, Vicki took POPS FM’s student executive team to the Te Awamutu Primary School.

“They’ve had their radio station for about three years, so they helped us with programming and marketing ideas.”

The station is manned by students who commit for a term, with teams of two taking weekly turns being DJs on a morning show from 8am- 9am, a morning tea show 10am-10.30am and an afternoon show from noon to 1.30pm.

“This is supplemented by news teams broadcasting news items and the rest of the time we run music.”

The student executive team is helped by a student marketing team, student news teams and student DJs – volunteering at the beginning of each term for weekly stints.

Vicki, who manages the station, says 40 Year 5 to Year 8 students became DJs last term.

Adam, 12, was one of the first DJs and says he became interested in it because he liked the idea of talking to people in the community.

“Other students like the idea of talking to other people as well, sharing their ideas and being able to be on-air – and having the feeling that lots and lots of people are listening to them.”

He says the station helps build students’ confidence – with the community listening and encouraging them. “It’s a cool team building exercise for students to get to know each other more and see who does heaps of work towards it.”

All peninsula residents can flick their dial to 107.3 FM with the low frequency station broadcasting in a 4km radius.

Pushing harder for Plunket plans The call is going out for more people to get involved in Te Puke Plunket’s redevelopment plans, after a disappointing turn-out to the redevelopment programme’s recent launch.

Te Puke Plunket Society administrator Lisa Powell says while there was strong interest in the project they are keen to hear from more people who can get involved with fundraising.

“It was a small turn-out with only about five or six, but it was a good meeting with some good fundraising ideas which we are looking at.”

Lisa was excited about the offer of help from an architect to draw the plans – which could save them $8000 – while a fundraising concert is also being organised.

“We not going to have one big fundraising com-

mittee but are looking at having lots of little groups driving fundraising events, so we want to hear from people with ideas who will make them happen.”

The campaign to raise $250,000 for the new multipurpose centre got off to a good start with $1150 raised by Te Puke Repertory’s charity performance of its production Stiff last weekend.

Lisa is determined to have the funds raised and the centre – which will include clinic rooms, car seat rental office and room for play groups and parenting groups – completed within two years.

Permaculture skills sprout in Bay gardens

The popularity of permaculture is growing in the Bay – thanks to a voluntary group spreading its roots region-wide.

Permablitz BOP held its first event in August 2012 – and after eight permablitzes in Katikati – is spreading its interest further into the region. “We believe there is a growing number of people interested in permaculture and we think there’s a large community of lifestyle block owners and gardening enthusiasts that want to try and garden more organically,” says Hugo Verhagen, who created the group with Trish Waugh and Sue Peachey. “All three of us had lost interest in mainstream landscap-

ing, due to environmental impacts we were having on people’s properties, and the costs of unsustainable materials such as concrete. We were keen on developing a means to landscape property in a sustainable way.”

Permablitz BOP, a non-profit network, now

serves to connect people and get permaculture designs undertaken at Bay properties.

A permablitz begins when a potential host signals interest in an event at their property.

They work with a volunteer or professional permaculture designers to design the garden. Hosts provide catering for the day and fund costs of material and design, if any.

Katikati Motel owner Kate Pfennig hosted permablitzes at her motel twice last year, seeing a 5m by 5m courtyard transform into a garden for guests, where they help themselves to fresh fruit, vegetable and herbs.

“It’s fabulous, it’s a great communitybuilding event,” says Kate.

Clean down beds of weeds that have grown during the winter, the die-backed tops of perennial plants and fallen leaves, for example, which may be hosting diseases.

Winter digging sounds hard work but it’s essential for your vegetable garden that needs a good turnover and some added organic matter.

If you have sown a green crop, such as Lupin or Mustard, make sure that you dig it in before it flowers. Otherwise it

will get to woody and not break down as quickly. These green crops are good because they fix nitrogen into the soil as well as adding organic matter.

If you haven’t sown a green crop you can, if you can get hold of it, spread some good old fashioned farm yard manure – horse manure is best – or good compost on the surface and dig in as deep as you can.

This will break up any compacted pan in the ground and open up the soil to let in more air, which in turn helps the soil microbes and improves the soil health.

This is best left then for a couple of weeks before you start any planting or seed sowing.

Stress effects on immunity Part three of our focus on immunity will look at stress.

Research is divided on whether stress impacts on our immune system, and, therefore whether it creates illness. Personally I have worked with many types of cancer and I often spend time asking the main questions that research states is a factor in cancer, for example: Do you drink alcohol? Do you exercise? Yet surprisingly, I find the only common denominator, between all my clients, is stress.

Everyone acknowledges, at some point prior to diagnosis, they had a considerable stressful event occur or were under long term chronic stress. This does not apply just to cancer but a number of other illnesses. Though stress may not be the cause of the

illness, it does play a part in its progression.

Yes, I know right now you are thinking “but we can’t always avoid stress”.

This is true, but we can change how it affects our health.

In my previous articles I advised on the importance of diet and exercise for the lymphatic system and how these play a factor in preventing illness and supporting the immune system.

To combat the effects of stress it requires us to learn to relax, understand the importance of taking “time out to smell the roses”, taking care of ourselves, and to acknowledge when we are not coping or tired.

History-full pharmacy celebrating 60 years In 1953, Bill Bongard opened Bongards Pharmacy – and at the time it was the only pharmacy in Greerton, Pyes Pa and Oropi areas.

After just 18 months, the business had more than 80 per cent of the local population in its books.

Its popularity has lasted the years, and next week free product tastings, consultations and hand massages will be on offer to customers in celebration of

the pharmacy’s 60th birthday.

From August 5-9 customers will be treated to the birthday specials, along with daily specials and giveaways, a chance to win a $200 voucher, and complimentary tea, coffee and cake.

In 1953, when Greerton’s population was about 800 people, the pharmacy opened in the Haslett Hasting building – further south than the current site at 1303 Cameron Rd. Bill sold the pharmacy when he retired in 1990 – and today it is owned

by Mike and Tracy Keys and the shop name has changed to Unichem Bongards Pharmacy. Customers can still find retail manager Amy St George,

dispensary technician Cathie Denton, pharmacist Peter Duffy and retail assistant Leah Proctor continuing their friendly service.

Matthew’s appealing for support condition has led to him being called names, such as ‘skin head’, for years. “It’s really hard because people don’t know about it and you get labelled. You just need to explain it to them and a lot of people do understand.”

The 22-year-old landscaper believes the answer lies in generating more knowledge of the condition and is inviting people to an alopecia awareness function, held in Hamilton in October.

“It’s to socialise everyone really, to get to know people in the area with alopecia, and just help them out.”

Matthew has grown up with alopecia and wants others with the condition to know they are not alone. “I’ve had it for so long I’ve gotten used to it, and everyone who I know has known me with no hair.

A lifetime of name calling and misunderstandings has a Tauranga man eager to raise awareness about his challenging condition.

Matthew Lock was diagnosed with alopecia 11 years ago and says a general lack of awareness of the

high school nowadays, losing your hair is a big deal, especially for a girl.”He wants to make sure people are not being bullied and offer support. “We’re just as normal as everyone else. It’s not a disease it’s just something that we’ve got.”

Alopecia is a condition resulting in hair loss. It occurs when a person’s immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, and Matthew says experts have not yet found a cause. The fundraising function is at St Paul’s Collegiate School in Hamilton on Saturday, October 26 from 10am-4pm.

Mothers ‘latch on’ for World Breastfeeding Week Tauranga mothers are joining hundreds throughout the country today in an attempt to break the world record for women simultaneously breastfeeding.

The Big Latch On celebrates breastfeeding and organiser of Tauranga’s event Joanna Pearson is hopeful this year a new record will be set.

Last year about 18 mothers from

Tauranga contributed to the current record of 1571 women breastfeeding together.

This year Joanna, a mother of four, expects 30-40 women will join the local Latch On at Wesley Community Church, starting at 10am.

“This is our way of supporting Women’s Health Action, which runs the event each year. We like to support other organisations aiming to increase breastfeeding in New Zealand.”

Latch On for years and says while it plays an important part in raising awareness, her focus remains on supporting women’s breastfeeding goals year-round.

She is a leader of the La Leche League (meaning ‘the milk’ in Spanish). The league offers support to Tauranga women breastfeeding through phone calls, catch-ups and monthly meetings.

The league is not-for-profit and open to all women.

Joanna is incredibly proud of Tauranga’s accepting approach to breastfeeding, and says event’s like today’s are further proof Kiwis have come a long way in accepting the practice.

“I think we’re very lucky in New Zealand that there is such a great support for breast feeding. I have never been asked to leave or [been] disapproved of.”

Toi Te Ora Public Health Service recommends mothers exclusively breastfeed their babies for the first six months and then continue to breastfeed along with the introduction of solid foods.

The Big Latch On is part of World Breastfeeding Week and this year’s theme is peer support, which recognises that successful breastfeeding requires support from family, friends and the community.

The commitment of Tauranga pastors Tauranga’s pastors and ministers are responding to news Family Planning is licensed to conduct abortions at its Tauranga Clinic.

Their response, in the advert on this page, is at a practical level – no doctrine, no dire threats, no condemnatory undertones, no mention of rights or wrongs or ‘shall nots’.

Just this simple message: If you’re in trouble, we are here to help.

How can pastors help in these real life situations?

For example, take the teenager, when the school counselor arranges an abortion without the parents’ knowledge; the boyfriend whose price for his continued affections is the abortion; the young woman, facing the loss of her working or sporting career; parents who can’t stand the scandal of their daughter’s pregnancy; the doctor, who willfully certifies a ‘threat to the mental health’ of their patient.

Or take the pregnant woman, numbed by the shock of confirming an unwanted pregnancy, and the desperate need to remember and cling to ‘escape’ words: “...a woman’s right”, “it’s legal”, “…no guilt involved”.

In the light of these realities, the pastors’ promise may seem like a massive undertaking.

But they alone know of their own connections – with independent counselors, with childless parents dying to adopt a child, with people willing to offer accommodation, with sources of clothing, money, or other necessities.

But above all, their special blessings, gifted ways of bringing wisdom to difficult situations; and to bring

Flagship events offer real benefit It is becoming increasingly obvious that the current council, besides not being a businessfriendly one, is also having major difficulties accepting the fact that festivals can also benefit the city.

The current debate over supporting the Garden and Artfest and also the Tauranga Arts Festival raises real concerns in respect to activities undertaken by many other organisations which endeavour to raise the

profile of Tauranga by putting on some outstanding events.

Do the councillors not realise that the bulk of the work, at all of these flagship events, is undertaken by volunteers who commit their time without any real reward other than the satisfaction and achievement of putting on a successful event that also often attracts national attention? Rather than condemning events I would

say to them get involved so that you see what real benefits there are.

The pool of funds, for these events, is $200,000 and I believe that the ratepayers of Tauranga receive exceptional value from this amount of investment in what are currently five main flagship events.

Of course we must control costs, especially when some of the funding is ratepayer-based, but then we should also be encouraging the arts, and other cultural or sporting events when there is an obvious benefit to Tauranga.

Speed limit change It’s been quite a few months now since the speed limit on the middle section of Welcome Bay Road has been reduced to 60km (80km either side of this). So, what’s the verdict? I drive this road every day, seemingly being almost the only one who drives at 60km.

I am constantly tailgated, and frequently overtaken. Maybe there’s an unwritten rule to say that we can drive at 80km, but no-one told me about it.

Prior to this speed limit change everyone was driving the same speed, (mostly) safely. Now, people are getting impatient with drivers like me doing 60km, and subsequently overtaking me.

Report Gidget’s attacker My wife and I share the sadness for the loss of your little dog Gidget.Many years ago in Auckland our little sydney silky Sarah was attacked on the street by a large unrestrained dog who lived nearby.

Her injuries were serious but she survived through the skill of a wonderful vet.We confronted the owners of the dog who had attacked Sarah...with reluctance they reimbursed our vet’s costs.

The offending dog was known to be very aggressive towards cats and other dogs, so we reported the incident to the local council dog control officer.We did not want the dog put down but requested that the owners be instructed to always have it on a lead, and for it to be muzzled whenever it was off their property.This advice will not bring Gidget back but the attack on her should be reported.Sarah lived to a very old age and is no longer with us.

In the present situation in NZ when such a huge financial burden is being imposed on the unconsulted taxpayer by government capitulation to the “Maori”, and innumerable fresh demands are being summarily introduced, in

all areas of daily life, with no consideration for our democratic rights, the public should now have an effective say in this matter.

The “Maori” do not have a history of benign occupation of NZ or generosity of any sort after their arrival here, but usually destroyed perceived competition by horrendous cruelty ( when the sole fault of some was that they were here first.. and it’s the “Maori” custom to dominate, at all and any cost to others.)..

Millions confiscated yearly

Flues cause ceiling fires

Firefighters were called to ceiling fires in Mount Maunganui and Te Puna overnight on Tuesday.

At about 9pm firefighters to Terrace Avenue where a couple had discovered a fire burning in their ceiling, after losing power in their kitchen.

Then around 7am on Wednesday firefighters from Tauranga and Greerton were called to a ceiling fire in Waikaraka Drive East.

The fire in the Te Puna house was caused by a Marshall heater.

Black ice linked to fatal crash

Black ice may have been a factor in a fatal crash in the Waioeka Gorge that left a 60-year-old woman dead and a three-year-old fighting for life.

The Mitsubishi 4WD carrying four people was travelling on State Highway 2 between Opotiki and Gisborne when it crashed and rolled about 10km from Matawai on Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to the crash where the 4WD had hit the dirt embankment and flipped about 8.30am.

The 4WD crashed on the same spot of road where two vehicles left the road due to ice last week.

No court date for DHB

The trial between a former Tauranga couple and the Bay of Plenty District Health Board has been “discontinued”, it was revealed this week.

Tony Hodder and Shelley Hodder-Powell launched a lawsuit against the BOPDHB for mental damages after their daughter Bella died from an undiagnosed rare blood disease six years ago.

In 2008 inquests by the Health and Disability Commissioner found the hospital failed to pick up the disease that led to the death of the eightweek-old.

The couple first launched the lawsuit in 2007 but it was discontinued on June 24 for reasons that can’t be revealed.

Party stabbing accused bailed

The Te Puna man charged with stabbing a teenager with a razor during a sixteenth birthday party last weekend has been bailed.

Angus Toshach Stormont Arabin, 20, appeared in Tauranga District Court charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possessing the Class A drug LSD, possessing LSD for supply, and wilful damage after allegedly damaging a partygoer’s car.

In court on Monday, Arabin’s lawyer Craig Tuck entered no plea on behalf of his client and applied for bail.

Judge Peter Rollo granted Arabin bail until his next scheduled court appearance on August 12.

Your July 26 editorial asks why Treaty settlements should be paid for by the present Government and taxpayers - and not by the British Government which signed the Treaty of Waitangi.

The simple answer is that the New Zealand Government, citizens, and taxpayers have been receiving a financial benefit of millions of dollars every year from confiscated land, and will continue to do so even after Treaty settlements have been completed.When more than $100 million worth of local land was confiscated in 1865 the Government and New Zealand citizens received an

unjustified $100 million windfall. That windfall has never been repaid, so it has been worth more than $2 million a year to the Government and New Zealand citizens from 1865 until last year. The Government last year returned $50 million in compensation, so taxpayers are still collecting more than $1 million a year from confiscated Tauranga land.

Current taxpayers should be quite happy paying Treaty settlement compensation because they have been receiving a financial benefit every year from confiscated land and will continue to do so.

Here’s another , the destruction of Wellington. It is not a case of if Wellington is destroyed but when. It is high time someone had the brains to sort establishment of a new city somewhere, like Hawkes Bay, where people could move instead of flocking to Auckland and exacerbating its overcrowding and bad road and transport

planning. If Govt spent more time on a new city instead of ways to shaft the electorate or make it easier to spy on us NZ would be better off. We need a new party that can think instead of plot. I do hope that One Law For All would be the party.

Three days later, he says...“We are going to have to put nine cents a litre tax on petrol at 3 cents per litre over three years because we’re not collecting enough tax to pay for roading upkeep”.

A man was taken hospital and power was out to parts of Mount Maunganui after a car crashed into a powerpole on Oceanbeach Road this week.

Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Madden says a 32-year-old man was taken by ambulance to hospital after he suffered a seizure at the wheel and crashed into a parked car before hitting a powerpole.

The crash on Oceanbeach Road between Girven Road and Concord Avenue occurred just after 3pm on Wednesday and cut power to homes in Omanu and Arataki.

A section of Oceanbeach Road about 100 metres either side of the accident was closed while fire and police attended.

“Maori” choose to decide the qualifications required to be a “Maori”. No quarrel here, until it becomes a consideration in dispensation of all the demanded benefits.

Then it is time to be fair and realistic, and abandon that casual approach, and consider the rights of the 85% of the population. Is this still a democracy or not ? If not, who changed it?

This is nothing short of a revolution in progress, and we’re in the middle of it. We have to wake up!

Driver test fails road toll

My step-son is 17 years old and has failed for the third time his restricted driving licence test. In the last two instances he has been failed on extremely minor indiscretions that are in dispute between him and the testing officer. A google search reveals concerns we are experiencing are being raised up and down the country – even by Police.

I appreciate that the intention of the tighter testing regime is to reduce the teen road toll. But evidence shows that teen drivers are most at-risk when they break conditions of their restricted licences: ie driving outside permitted hours; driving with friends (that are not qualified drivers); and driving after drinking alcohol. None of these risk factors are addressed through the testing regime.

Young people are subjected to humiliating failures on nit-picky assessments that only serve to ‘undermine’ their confidence. Even driving instructors are at a loss to support their most competent pupils through the process. Also, $88 per test is not cheap, especially when you have to pay again and again for minor infringements. The teen road toll will not be reduced by this testing regime.

Selling NZ to US

John Key seems to me to be selling New Zealand to the USA. The TPP treaty, which he is currently negotiating, will give greater powers for the US global companies to over-rule NZ Government decisions. The GCSB bill will give the USA greater access to information about all New Zealanders.

He has also tied the NZ military into the US system, much more than it was previously. Of course this suits his agenda, as I guess that when he eventually leaves office as Prime Minister, he will probably retire to Hawaii, with his increased Nick Bagnall, Omokoroa. fortune.

Don’t take pomp out of royals In last week’s Sun, Roger referred to the Union Jack as “a thing”. In my opinion; it is possibly the Mona Lisa equivalent of flag art or design.

With regards to the English, was he referring to Englishman by birth or genealogy?

Well let’s think about it. If we got all the people in England with Basque, Scots, Welsh, Irish, Norman, Scandinavian, Italian and German ancestry to go back to where they came from, what would the remaining England be like? I guess it would be a place with a very

small white minority, and possibly, following a national election ruled by a Muslim -ed government.

If the genealogy of the English is thought-out they could logically be classed as a mongrel race. However, if restricted to the last say 400 years, they could be considered as cousins with the Welsh, Scots and Irish.

Writing of a right royal rip off The Sun’s article (July 26) on the right royal rip off and the great Maori money machine has prompted me to write.

I agree with every word you have written on these subjects, particularly where we taxpayers who paying a debt, if indeed there is a debt and I personally don’t believe there is, should be paid by the English Monarchy. If I was able to claim from the English for the injustices done to my ancestors from Scotland (the Clearances and Culloden to name a few) and the poor old Welsh miners who slogged their guts out hewing coal underground for a pittance, while English mine owners made millions, I would be a very wealthy lady. None of my rellies were even in New Zealand at the time of these so-called land thefts but when they did arrive they worked very hard and made good contributions to this country.

Secondly, there has been much discus-

sion about the rights and wrongs of fluoride and while I’m sure the substance has had a beneficial bearing on the beautiful strong teeth of today’s youth, I would venture to say there are other reasons for the poor quality of my generation’s teeth. Much has been said about we older denture wearers but I feel sure it was not just a lack of fluoride that contributed to us losing our teeth so young.

No-one has yet mentioned the school dental nurses of that era (1940/1950) who bored hell out of our teeth and filled them with mercury. Each time a metal eating utensil touched one of my many mercury filings I would just about go through the roof with shock and pain. I consider the dental treatment we received at the school dental clinic, which we called the murder house, had much to do with us losing a full mouth of teeth as mere teenagers.

I’m against all monarchies as they’re all parasites, bludgers, drones, all very wealthy, kept in luxury by taxpayers.

Imagine the cost to keep all who are inside the grounds and buildings all for one little lady. (I’m two months older than the Queen).

I saw on TV she is worth 74 million pounds. Yet many of her subjects are living in poverty. Kings and Queens are just figureheads, as prime min-

isters and residents are leaders and decision makers. Many times I wish that NZ pull away from the Commonwealth and become independent from the UK. The late Princess Diana made a faux pas by being involved with Arab Muslims which ultimately caused her demise.

That useless husband of hers was a disaster – and still is. I shall put your RR page in my scrapbook for prosperity.

And the scandals keep on coming What a week. Every time I turn on the news the country seems embroiled in a new scandal.

Amazingly, we’ve had two protest marches in sleepy little Tauranga in the last fortnight, one because the country is turning into a police state and the other because animals are being forced to take drugs. And that’s just the tip of the scandal iceberg.

What has always disappointed me about New Zealand, however, is that whatever political shenanigans we manage to get worked up about, we just don’t seem to be able to muster a full-blown political sex scandal. I gaze in awe at America and Italy and France – where politicians fearlessly expose themselves to public ridicule and odium simply through an inability to keep their trousers on in important situations.

And America (despite fierce competition from Italy’s “Silver Fox” and France’s DSK) is currently in pole position for the scandal grand prix.

Personally I put it down to names.

America has much more exciting names

than New Zealand. We almost had a sex scandal here but then it fizzled into an argument over emails. What can you expect from a man with an uninspired handle such a Peter Dunne. “Peter”?

I guess there’s a bit of scope there for wild headlines, but it’s not going to set the world on fire. Especially when, in America, they have Anthony Weiner.

For those with an eye for the political sex scandal, Anthony Weiner is the gift that keeps giving, especially now that it emerges he was still sending unsolicited pics of his family jewels to unsuspecting women even as he and his wife were giving interviews to announce he was “rehabilitated” and running for the position of New York mayor. I know we shouldn’t laugh – schoolboy sense of humour and all that - but... Weiner?

Really? A rose by any other name just wouldn’t be so funny.

But one year’s scandal is next year’s yawn. Perhaps when another decade of tweeting has passed no one will think twice about “weinering”.

Time Out New York’s movie critic called it “the closest thing to a masterpiece that I’ve seen so far here in Cannes”.

That only whetted my appetite as I was already a big fan of the director’s previous film Tony Manero which also combined a taut story with a character study and a searing political subtext.

I’m not sure the current fashion of remaking fairytales has produced anything particularly worthwhile, whether aimed at adults (Hansel and Gretel) or kids (the two recent Snow Whites).

That doesn’t really change with Jack The Giant Slayer which has the attraction of director Bryan Singer. He’s proved he can make silly stuff sensible with the first two X-Men films but fails to bring individuality here as Jack (About a Boy’s Nicholas Hoult) climbs the beanstalk to the giants’ world and causes much CGI fighting. Ewan McGregor and Stanley Tucci provide charming support but it’s all a bit middle of the road. is set in a post-Invasion of the BodyThe Host snatchers society where infuriatingly benign aliens have implanted themselves inside most humans. Central is Melanie (Saoirse Ronan), whose mind fights back after being “occupied” and who then escapes to help the mistrustful resistance. Adapting author Stephanie Meyers’ follow-up to the hugely profitable Twilight franchise, Kiwi writer director Andrew Niccol uses the same minimalist approach and slick clean look as his previous In Time. It’s kinda long and kinda dull, but does include the year’s weirdest love “triangle”: two life forms in one body and two guys in love with her/them.

While it’s always good to see Kevin Spacey’s face on a DVD cover, even Spacey completists may want to think twice before indulging in Insepa. In keeping rable with the recent trend towards dropping western stars into Chinese movies (to give more credibility at the Eastern box office and a possible release in the west) Spacey’s turn here is totally gratuitous despite being the most fun thing in the movie. It’s a rather silly and soppy story of an unhappy Chinese chap who, with the help of Spacey’s eccentric “neighbour”, becomes a low-rent superhero/crime fighter. The ‘Exhibition’ cinema series features high-definition tours of fine art exhibitions and is created for movie theatre audiences. The series covers ‘Manet: Portraying Life’, ‘Munch: Munch 150’, celebrating the 150th anniversary of Edvard Munch; and ‘Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure’.

Munch, who is well-known for painting ‘The Scream’ recently set a public art auction record of $120 million for one of four paintings – and his exhibition is being hailed a “once-in-a-lifetime show”.

Hosted by the National Museum and the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway, the event features the greatest ever number of Munch’s key works 220 paintings. The cinema event will take audiences through the process of putting the exhibition together; and an in-depth biography of Munch, who lived from the mid-19th Century to German occupation of Norway in World War II.

Napley, who decide to pose “nude” for a calendar to raise funds for a couch in the local hospital’s cancer ward. The women become an unexpected international success, and the positives and perils of fame follow.

I’m going to be honest and say there were a few opening night jitters, and the film version still has my heart – but this version, written by Tim Firth and directed by Julie Lankshear, has some true merits.

I take my hat off (the rest of me will remain dressed) to the actresses portraying the women of Napley – getting your kit off in front of a theatre full of strangers isn’t your everyday acting requirement in Tauranga. But these ladies did it with style and class.

In fact, the way in which the nude photo shoots were carried out onstage was so well done. The women were genuinely naked, hiding their delicates behind various objects, such as flower bouquets, teapots or English cream buns. The shots were set up in front of

the audience, and the dressing gowns were dropped on stage. Nobody saw anything they shouldn’t have – but the entire time I kept thinking “You would NOT want that cream bun to slip”.

Major props go out to Geraldine Broderick and Christine Giddens, who play main characters Chris and Annie.

Geraldine’s English accent is fantastic and the way she captures the Chris I know and love from the film version is amazing. She was definitely the highlight for me. I also thoroughly enjoyed the performance from Simon Butler, who plays Chris’ husband.

I had a number of giggles throughout the play, and judging by the raucous laughter coming from the seats around me, most of which were occupied, – the play was a success.

Houston inspired show

A tribute to a woman who has long been held as an icon of pop music and vocal ability is coming to Tauranga next week.

Presented by Showtime Management, ‘The Greatest Love Of All The Whitney Houston Show’ stars Belinda Davids, who will sing a catalogue of Houston’s most loved songs from the span of her 29 year career.

The 2 ½ hour concert and stage show includes hits such as ‘How Will I Know’, ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’, ‘Where Do Broken Hearts Go’, ‘Didn’t We Almost Have It All’, ‘I’m Every Woman’, ‘Exhale (Shoop Shoop)’, ‘Step by Step’ and of course, ‘I Will Always Love You’.

In respect for Houston’s legacy, Showtime Management dedicated more than 12 months to perfecting this production and finding the right star. After conducting more than 15,000 auditions in 12 countries, accomplished South African vocalist Belinda was selected to pay reverence to Houston with her carefully crafted renditions.

Exposed mainly to R&B and gospel as a child, Belinda was innately drawn to Houston’s musical style, and paid homage to her idol through her dress, hairstyle and by including Houston songs in almost every one of her live shows. She now understands the music so well that her performances are unbelievable for some audiences, she says. One audience in Hong Kong demanded she sing ‘I Will Always Love You’ acapella to prove she wasn’t lipsyncing; Belinda obliged and was greeted with looks of disbelief, closely followed by a standing ovation.

The show will play in Tauranga on August 9 at Baycourt Theatre.

What matters to God? “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”

This is probably one of the most frightening and sobering passages of Scripture and this verse should make us sit bolt upright and examine ourselves for our confession – ‘I am a Christian’ – will not be a golden ticket into the Kingdom of God. As Christ said: “not everyone who says ‘Lord, Lord’…” will enter.

We should be asking the question:

“What is the will of the Father; what is it that God wants of me? John 6:28 says: “…this is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent…”

Jesus exposed the guilt of man’s sin. We are all guilty before God, and all that sin can earn us is death and separation from God. We are cut off from God by our sin and we can only be made alive by the grace and mercy of God (we cannot be reconciled by anything that we do).

God “wishes that none should perish but all come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). Agree with God that you are a sinner, truly repent and put your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for your salvation, and come, join us as we “worship Him in Spirit and Truth”.

New Zealand Post Office still standing tall The historic New Zealand Post Office is an iconic building for Tauranga.

The Weekend Sun is profiling some of Tauranga’s historic places dotted around the city. This week reporter Zoe Hunter looks at the iconic former New Zealand Post Office building on Harrington St. New Zealand Historic Places Trust Lower Northern area manager Fiona Low says the post office was not the first building on the site.

She says the initial building burned down in 1902 and a post office and government building was erected in its place.

The post office and telephone exchange took up all of the ground floor, with the magistrate court office occupying most of the first floor.

Fiona says the building has national significance as the last surviving Baroque architecture-style post office building – with its exterior design illustrating a style once identifiable throughout the country.

She says the building is recognised for its architectural and historical

“The building is representative of the growth in postal services prior to World War I, and notes that the building is illustrative of a period when post offices were a focal point in provincial towns.

“The historic former post office/government building is one of the iconic buildings of Tauranga.”

The building carries a New Zealand Historic Places Trust Category 1 registration; and is scheduled on the Tauranga City Plan Heritage Register.

The building also has a Heritage Covenant title providing protection, conservation and maintenance of the entire building.
