Discipline and Grace No goal is too high for Pahoia ballerina Grace Davison. From her first dance lesson as a four-year-old, her dream of living on the stage is coming closer every year. But as she knows, making progress towards any major goal requires discipline, determination and sacrifice. Grace, 17, has made the final 30 in in the last two English ballet schools she
applied for – out of thousands of applicants. It is a major accomplishment, but with places only offered to the top 12 dancers, Grace knows she has a lot of work to do to scale to the top. To get ahead she has upped her training tempo – putting in 25 hours in the dance studio every week to build on her talent and squeeze in the two-year Royal Academy of Dance’s Advanced 2 training. She has also switched her studies to corre-
spondence school, to give her more flexibility to fit in her dancing – sometimes rising at 3am to complete schoolwork so she can dance at 9am. “It does take a lot of discipline and you get the occasions when ballet takes over a bit, but it’s been really good for me.” Next week she will compete at the Tauranga Performing Arts Competition, after a two year absence, in the hope of winning back the senior ballet championship cup she won two
