Unearthing strange night encounters Have you seen the light?

We have, and several others are now reporting strange occurrences on the harbour in recent months – some sending in photos of unusual lights over the water and in the sky, all since the Sun’s initial report last month.

These stories coming from readers have some similarities: They’re sane, sober, reliable people – not seeking publicity or particularly obsessed with alien spotting, and have spoken sensibly to our reporters, some reluctantly, on this series of unexplained events.

Here at RR we like to keep an open mind on things, especially strange and weird things, until there’s some hard evidence.

Visitors from outer space fall into that category. We’ve been conditioned by Hollywood to jump to the conclusion that the first sign of anything odd in the sky must be Mork from Ork or one of the other cheerful, some not so friendly, characters from other planets.

For instance, if we found the Martians, or their vehicle, that would be convincing. Such as this photo sent this week of a Martian car, thanks to Ken Wright of Lightwave Gallery.

Our hearts were sent racing when this headline beamed into the newsroom: “Foreign Affairs Minister welcomes Martian Foreign Minister.”

On closer reading, we discover that it actually says:

“Mauritanian” foreign minister, Mr Hamadi Ould Baba Ould Hamadi. We welcome Ould Hamadi, send our regards to the young Hamadis and apologise for the brief confusion.

And to clarify, is there any chance he left his car parked outside Lightwave Gallery?

No sorry, that was not the Mauritanians, it was REALLY the Martians.

“Beam me down Scottie, I’m in a power of strife up here.”

Then, we received this photo from an astute reader, of an alien who landed on their roof. Fortunately, the arrival of these aliens is well documented and the invader is about to be repelled from our shores. Whakamarama School’s upcoming possum hunt will send them packing. We’ll have more on this in coming weeks.

Hard evidence

We do not, then, have any hard evidence of space travellers. We do have a series of smudgy photos in bad light, but still a long stretch to say

that spacepersons are hanging about.

However it does suggest that something unusual is happening. Unusual enough for sane, sober reliable folk to bother taking a photo.

Oddball sights in the sky and over the water aren’t automatically aliens. There is most likely a logical, earthbound explanation for this.

Such as our navy, or someone else’s, playing with new gizmos.

Our defence people say it’s not them. Can you really trust them to come clean about their classified manoeuvres?

Just this week we found some hard evidence that the army was up to something. The whole army was on the road. We know it was the whole army, because they had both trucks and the quad bike.

They were belting along the open highway at a blistering 55km/h with a fair bit of traffic building up behind. Lucky we are not at war – we’d be late.

Manoeuvres

Then this thought: perhaps our army was still on the way to the Second World War, at that pace, they should make Dunkirk before the next rugby world cup. You can never tell with our armed forces.

Our only hope is that the enemy was still stuck in the traffic tailback.

And while we are slinging off at the military, it’s likely they do some manoeuvres and don’t tell us. That could explain some unusual sightings.

Remember, this is the same defence force that has unexploded devices washing ashore fairly regularly around the New Zealand coast, and doesn’t find it necessary to explain until the dog digs one up; or an inquisitive farmhand decides to cut one open to see what’s inside.

Answer: Fire, lots of hot fire!

So here at RR we suspect there’s something odd going on in our skies and over our harbour.

It may not be from another world, but we’d like to find out exactly what’s up.

And, surprise surprise, this week our military announced plans to spend $600m on a “cyber army” including remote control drones and robots.

“Earthling: Take me to your leader.”

So have they been test driving any of these fandangled flying machines lately? Over our harbour, by any chance? It’s the best explanation available so far.

Watch this space.

On the hunt Fish & Game is asking Tauranga hunters to target birds causing stress to residents and the environment before the season ends on August 25.

Senior Eastern Fish & Game officer Mathew McDougall is encouraging hunters to put pukeko on their hit list and not be afraid to hunt black swans on Tauranga Harbour.

Mathew says an estimated 5000 black swans reside on the harbour, and the organised hunt at the beginning of this month, killing 146 birds, did not have the impact Fish & Game hoped for.

“The well-publicised black swan hunt wasn’t as successful as we’d have hoped, with numbers of birds climbing into the thousands.

“That hunt was organised by a group of hunters, so that was within the normal rules and regulations of the hunting season.”

He says hunters are “absolutely” encouraged to shoot the swans, and there is no limit to the numbers

they can kill.

Hunters are also asked to shoot pukeko – but Mathew warns there is a restriction of 10 birds per hunter, per day.

Fish & Game is currently fielding complaints from Tauranga residents living in subdivisions that have been built around the harbour on former wetlands, he says. “People are finding there are a lot of pukeko around.

“Pukeko are turning up in people’s backyards where they damage gardens and poop on their drives and lawns.

While he says it is more a case of people moving into the pukeko’s home – the wetlands – the species is smart and can cause significant damage.

“They can be a real nuisance.”

Though the mallard duck season is now closed, Mathew says there are weeks left to hunt other species, with upland game birds allowed to be hunted in most areas until August 25.

He says the mallard season in the North Island was a tough one, just as Fish & Game predicted.

ted should have a positive flow-on effect in terms of the numbers of birds which survived into the breeding season, “to hopefully get us out of the dip we’re in at the moment”.

Mathew is appealing to hunters who haven’t returned the bands taken from mallards they shot during the season to return them – as they provide crucial information on population numbers. “The more we get in the more accurate we can be, and the more liberal we can be with season regulations.”

Banding, which normally begins in early January, is only one element of population monitoring work, which includes aerial observations. Banding is used to find out survival rates for juveniles and adults, males and females.

The recovery of a band also means the distance between a banding site and recovery site can be calculated, as can the time elapsed since banding – giving indication of how long the bird lived for.

Doctor admits drunken flee

A former Tauranga doctor has admitted to drink driving and fleeing from police before crashing into a Mount Maunganui building. Mustafa Sabanli, 30, appeared in Tauranga District Court this week where he pleaded guilty to one count each of driving with excess breath alcohol, dangerous driving and failing to stop.

On Monday, June 17 Sabanli was caught more than twice over the legal limit around 3am after his Audi was seen driving erratically down Takitimu Drive. Police pulled Sabanli over on the corner of Hewletts Road and Totara Street and when officers approached the driver’s side door Sabanli accelerated, fleeing down Totara Street at speeds of more than 130km/h. He failed to negotiate the Totara Street and Hull Road roundabout, crashing into a building, causing $2500 worth of damage. He was remanded on bail for sentencing on August 5.

Route K plans progressing Tauranga City Council this week proceeded to formalise plans to shift its toll road Route K to government-ownership.

The agreement is to support on-going discussion with the New Zealand Transport Agency on the basis that Route K will be declared a state highway – with the timing to be by agreement between the two.

It’s a ‘keep calm and carry on’ decision, acknowledging the un-welcome news that the NZTA’s rules prevent it from taking over the road’s $61 million debt.

Getting rid of the Route K debt will free the council to borrow more money. Accord-

ing to non-council observers, the council’s total debt is about $450 million, a level already past the city’s debt ceiling.

Passing of Route K to the NZTA won’t help with the debt. NZTA Waikato/BOP regional director Harry Wilson told city councillors in March that the agency isn’t legally empowered to buy debt with public money.

The council wants the agency to take over Route K, and its maintenance, and make paying off its debt a priority. It also wants to discuss a risk-share arrangement around the possible construction of a 15th Ave connection to route K, the SH2 northern link and the SH29 Tauriko bypass.

In spite of Route K’s failure

to perform to expectations, it is working. Route K revenue currently pays for all operating costs and about 50 per cent of the debt-servicing costs. At the current rates, the project is expected to start paying more money that it owes by 2021-2022, when the debt is estimated to have grown to $65.5 million.

Revenues are increasing as more trucks pay the toll – and in preference to struggling through Cameron or Cambridge roads.

The monthly revenue total for May 2011 was $208,000, in May 2012 it was $295,187 and

last month, its monthly revenue was $308,118.

Last month, 960 trucks paid tolls, compared with 880 in May 2012. Car traffic is remaining fairly static. During the last three years, average daily car number was 3895 in May 2011, 4045 in May 2012 and 3969 last month.

Four on trial for Kimura murder The trial of four men charged over the death of Tauranga man Gary Kimura is underway in the High Court in Hamilton this week.

Taonui Hiku, 26, and Witeri Ahomiro Neketai, 35, both unemployed of Te Puke and Joseph Rewiri, 44, of Auckland, are charged with the murder of the 44-year-old Tauranga businessman.

Jesse Hartley, 28, of Mount Maunganui is also on trial for manslaughter. Gary Kimura was assaulted at his Margaret Rd home on October 5, 2011 and later died in Tauranga Hospital on November 16.

Human bones found in city park

Work to install power cables to the city centre is on hold after contractors uncovered human bones buried at Robbins Park. The human bone fragments were discovered by Northpower contractors laying power cable recently in the park end of Monmouth Street next to the new police station. The fragments have since been analysed as koiwi, or human bone, and placed in the care of the Ngai Tamarawaho iwi.

A trio of tree trouble

Chainsaws will be cutting into two historic pohutukawa trees in 2nd Avenue following the recommendation of the council’s tree sub-committee on Wednesday. Residents wanted three of the trees felled, but the sub-committee recommended one tree be pruned, and one be felled.

Residents at No.2 and No.10 2nd Avenue say the historic trees block the sun and cause flooding by blocking drains and guttering. The sub-committee agreed to heavily prune the tree outside No.2 at a cost of $1500 plus GST – to be paid for by council, and fell one of the trees outside No.10 at a cost of $3160, to be met by the property owner.

Mother lived for family

A Tauranga woman killed in an accident with a logging truck is being described as an everyday woman who lived for her children. Lisa Maree Boston, 42, died after her car collided with a logging truck at the intersection of Ruahihi Road and State Highway 29 on June 21. Lisa’s husband Mike says the 42-year-old administrator worked every day and lived for her two children - Kieran and Myah.

“She always tried to do as much travelling as she could. She liked to go and see the world. She was always trying to save some money to try and do that sort of thing,” says Mike.

Lisa had lived in Tauranga with her family for the last 12 years working as an administrator at Bay City Mitsubishi for the past 18 months. Her funeral was held on Wednesday.

Courageous collision Courage and fear will go on the line when 18 first-time boxers step into the ring at ASB Baypark Arena next month.

DARE Fight for Youth on Friday, July 12 sees the aspiring pugilists battle it out in front of an anticipated full house to raise funds for the Te Aranui Youth Trust.

Among the fighters is Greerton firefighter Luke Burgess and Tauranga constable Karl Blinkhorne.

Training commenced a few weeks ago under Tauranga boxing trainer Hemi Niha – involving a run up Mount Maunganui to test fitness levels.

Luke decided to get involved after witnessing the impact youth programmes can make when he taught youth teamwork skills paddling waka ama in Christchruch.

“It was great to see the difference it made, so I was keen to get involved to help out.”

Luke is unsure of his chances against Karl, saying he had not seen him spar, but joked that one of

them will be happy.

“I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be fun. But I have to say, the training’s been harder than I expected.”

Constable Karl Linkhorne got involved to help fundraise for Blue Light’s youth programmes.

“It’s a great cause, but aside from that it’s also a great self-challenge.

You don’t often get the chance to test yourself to this extent.”

Karl thanks Hemi for his training, which he describes as tough and challenging, saying it is inspiring to learn about the work Hemi does in schools to help children build their confidence.

Both boxers would love to see a sell-out crowd support the fundraiser.

The Te Aranui Youth Trust is the governing body of three youth programmes.

Trust operations manager Wendy Nicholls says youths today are

very heavily influenced by what is going on around them.

“Many of the youth we work with come from welfare dependant whanau, where anti-social behaviours and/or drug and alcohol abuse is common.

“Te Aranui Youth Trust builds courage and resilience in these young people so that they can break the cycle and follow a more positive path.”

Te Aranui Youth Trust receives no government funding, DARE Fight for Youth will build funds in reserve so the Trust has finance available for future requirements, says Wendy.

New lease on life Merivale figurehead moving on Graham Cameron believes he can look back and smile contently after helping shape and develop a positive Merivale community image during his time as Merivale Community Centre chief executive.

The father of four announced his decision to leave this week after a five and a half year stint as the community’s face of change.

The position, originally for six months, became an “all-consuming job” and the time is right to step aside, says Graham.

“Like most not for profits it’s had its ups and downs and some of the change you’d love to see is hard fought.

“But I’m pleased with the effort I’ve put in and with the staff and team I’ve left behind.”

Looking back fondly, Graham highlights contributions made to the youth programme, with current youth captains Aaron Simon and Whetu Taupo-Wharakura a shining achievement.

“When I started they were young people on our programme.

They became volunteers and then they started working there [at the community centre] and now are qualified youth workers.

“I think that kind of mentoring to help them become the young professionals they are is quite special.” Along with Aaron and

Whetu, a push to decrease the amount of tagging has acted as a catalyst to help increase people’s overall community perception, he says. “Obviously there are still changes to be done, but there have been big improvements in the past few years.

“Particularly our young people, that’s why I got into it in the first place. They never fail to surprise and never fail to disappoint.”

Graham has a range of emotions following leaving the centre.

“I am sad to be leaving good friends and colleagues; I am excited to move on to new opportunities and possibilities; I am a little apprehensive about where to head with my newfound freedom.” The shift frees

up time to spend with his young family consisting of Ataraira, 10, Hinengakau, seven, Te Kaponga, four, and 22-month-old MangoUruroa.

“My wife [Jo] is studying towards being a fully qualified teacher so this will give her a chance to follow her career through.”

Along with the planned family time, Graham plans to complete his Masters in Theology through the University of Otago after a five year postponement. Ruffled feathers George Shaw’s daily habit of hand feeding seagulls from his balcony is being threatened by neighbours who want Tauranga City Council to end the ritual.

The 72-year-old pensioner, who lives alone on 14th Avenue, often has about 30 birds crowding his balcony morning and afternoon.

George has fed the birds for about eight years, and despite complaints from angry residents and numerous visits from councillors pleading with him to stop – George says he will continue.

In council this week, neighbour and petitioner Bill Humphrey sought to end George’s habits for good, saying the birds present a health hazard to the close-knit neighbourhood.

“The birds are common carriers of bacterial, viral and fungal pathogens; mites, lice and other parasites. The number of gulls invading towns has continued to increase and so has the risk of them spreading E-coli, salmonella and botulism.”

Bill has approached George many times in the last seven years, and is

frustrated nothing permanent has been achieved.

“I get fed up with having to wash my van every day before I go to work.

“Another lady who rented a unit near us feared so much for the health of her baby, who had just started crawling, that she moved to another locality.”

George claims the relationship between himself and Bill has never been healthy and believes the complaints are over the top.

“They’ve come up with every possible reason why I shouldn’t be feeding them. It’s just one thing after another.”

George, whose house is on the market, spends $30-40 each week on bird food and feels sorry for the injured birds.

“The council has been around to see me on a number of occasions, they brought Health and Safety people around and could find no legitimate health problems.

“They have asked me not to, but I’m not breaking any laws.”

Bill says he doesn’t want anything drastic like culling. “We just want him to stop feeding the things, and they won’t come here.”

He made his plea at the Policy and Strategy Committee’s open forum on Tuesday, joined by other concerned parties.

Nearby residents The Weekend Sun spoke to were not concerned about the birds, and say George is entitled to do as he pleases.

After hearing the submissions on Tuesday, councillors asked staff to look through the rules for ways to deal with George’s feeding habit.

Magic make play-off history After 14 weeks of ANZ Championship regular season, Waikato/Bay of Plenty Kia Magic has made it to the play-offs – the first defending champions to do so one year on in the tournament’s history.

Magic met with the Northern Mystics in front of a full house at ASB Arena on Monday night, posting an impressive 68-40 win against the visitors.

With an eye on the semi-finals, Magic ended the game in a celebratory outcome for coach Noeline Taurua, who was recognised by the franchise for her time with the Magic.

The team, now sitting third on the ladder, will host the sudden-death play-off against the Queensland Firebirds in Hamilton next Sunday.

The major semi-final will be between the Adelaide Thunderbirds and the Melbourne Vixens in Adelaide on Sunday.

Expansion on right track After a flurry of activity on the Memorial Park railway track two years ago – you could have been mistaken for thinking expansion plans were on hold.

Major work to expand the track, which was originally laid in 1984, has been held up for the last two years while earthworks settle. But the team of volunteers, who run the track, expect the go-ahead to lay track foundations any day.

“We’ve been plodding away on what we can do, but there has been only so much we can do,” says Tauranga Model Marine and Engineering Club president Peter Jones.

Peter says it was critical to ensure embankment had settled because it is on a naturally swampy area. Once confirmed by surveyors and geotechnical experts, pre-load will be taken off the embankment, reducing its height to 2.3m and opening the way to pour concrete foundations and lay the track for the new 350m rail circuit.

the ground – and inclines, “to offer a more interesting ride”.

However, children are being asked to be patient – and with the project not expected to be finished until summer 2014, with most of the cost being funded from the club’s Sunday $1 children’s rides, making it a “long-winded project”.

“Really it’s a hand-to-mouth thing. If we can’t get assistance from people, we just do what we can with our own income and volunteer labour,” says Peter.

Beside a total of $25,000 in grants from Pub Charity, the Lion Foundation and Tauranga Rotary Club, the bulk of $190,000 spent so far has come from the club, with about $90,000 left to raise.

Peter says there is great public support for the project, with people paying at least $20 to sponsor about 400 of the 1700 railway sleepers required.

Money goes towards the foundations, sleepers and steel track. The club would also love any sponsorship towards the

viaduct, which is the greatest remaining expense.

“The amount of support has been fantastic, but we’d love to hear from anyone else who can help.”

A working bee in a fortnight will put bolsters across the poles for the high-rise viaduct, in preparation for major work on the bridge.

Remembering the ’63 Kaimai tragedy Buffeted by gusts of 30 knot winds, with thick cloud and rain – July 3, 1963, started off as a forgettable winter’s day in Tauranga.

For journalist Glenn Pettit it was business as usual as he was sent off to cover proceedings at the Willow St courts. But everything changed mid-morning when a messenger burst into the courtrooms, telling him a plane was missing in the Kaimai Ranges.

“A cadet burst in and caused a kerfuffle,” recalls Glenn, being a senior newspaper reporter was sent over the Kaimais to the Gordon quarry to cover the story.

This Wednesday, the 50th anniversary of the crash, which claimed the lives of all 20 passengers

and three crew, will be commemorated with a special service at a roadside memorial at Gordon.

Nearly 50 years ago, Glenn and a photographer followed a truck of soldiers heading to Gordon to join the search for the missing plane, which had flown into a bushed hillside when beginning its programmed descent too early.

“It was a terrible day. It was blowing a fury,” recalls Glenn, who says the story quickly

changed from a search for a missing plane to a crash scene, when police were alerted by Gordon quarry staff who heard an aircraft engine drone overhead then stop abruptly.

Heavy cloud cover, wind, rain and sheer climbs to the top of the range where the DC-3 was believed to have crashed delayed the rescue – stretching it to a three-day operation, by which time a road was being cut in from Thompsons Track.

Kiwi hunting Kiwi numbers are expected to get a boost at Otanewainuku forest in the next few days, with a group from the kiwi trust hunting for birds to relocate from Maungataniwha.

Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust chairman Phil Wells says the team of four, which includes a kiwi dog handler, were hoping to return from the area, at the back of the Ureweras, with up to six adults, with three pairs being heard there in the last two weeks.

Phil says they had been invited to take the kiwi, if they can find them, because they are living in an area that has no predator control. “They are seen as being very much at risk.”

The trusts is keen to get more males or breeding pairs if possible, says Phil, because males call six times more often than females, so would help ‘anchor’ the young kiwis when they are introduced to the virgin bush park in Oropi.

It is unknown whether pairs will stay together after they shift, but all introduced kiwis will have radio transmitters attached to enable them to be monitored.

Meanwhile, kiwi chick Pistachio, whose unannounced arrival surprised everyone in the trust two months ago, is doing well and was 632 gram at last weigh-in at the hatchery and juvenile centre Kiwi Encounter. The centre also has another group of juvenile kiwis that are destined for the kiwi reserve.

Phil says the trust is expecting to take about half of the nine juveniles, which will probably be sent to another sanctuary for a year, until they’re more settled and unlikely to roam so far. Most previously introduced juvenile kiwi have been lost, with it believed they wandered off.

Tauranga Coastguard and Tauranga Foundation for Youth are this year’s major recipients of the Tauranga Police CIB Charity Trust.

Trustee and Detective Sergeant Pete Blackwell announced the recipients for this year’s luncheon on Thursday, June 20.

He says Tauranga Coastguard and Tauranga Foundation for Youth are being chosen as recipients, because they do great work for the community.

“The donation for the Coastguard will go towards a new amphibious boat they want to buy,” says Pete.

The $200,000 amphibious boat will give the coastguard direct access to areas where its current boat cannot go.

Pete says the trust has also chosen another five

worthy recipients for this year’s charity auction.

They are the Te Puke Community Centre Trust, Welcome Bay Community Centre, Beach Haven Community Centre, Special Olympics Tauranga and the Papamoa Surf Club.

“These organisations all do great work in areas of counselling, helping youth offenders and dealing with family issues.”

Pete says more than 70 per cent of tickets to this year’s auction, on Friday, 27 September, have sold, “so if people want to attend they need to get in quick”. The auction’s must-have, high-profile items, to be auctioned off, include a 1971 Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier duel-signed site card; and autographed guitars from Pat Benatar and Ringo Star’s All Star Band.

Beyond ‘Dad’s Army’ Every weekend groups of community-minded people around the Western Bay of Plenty – and the country – set out at night to try and help make their neighbourhood a little safer.

But realistically, what difference do these patrols really make? Tauranga community constable Matt Elliott, like everybody the Weekend Sun spoke to, is overwhelming positive about the impact the groups’ regular night patrols have.

“They bring a lot to the table from a crime prevention perspective; and also to reassurance of the community. If people want to do something to help out the community this is a great place to start.”

Matt says the patrols are particularly helpful in monitoring for suspicious behaviour or general disorder, such as watching for problems as young people congregate at the Brookfield shops in the evening or helping in the Matua and Bellevue areas after a spate of burglaries from cars.

“We can ask them to go down there in their vehicle, which is marked CPNZ, and they can sit there and monitor for us. Quite often their presence is more an enough of a deterrent.”

But he’s certain they limit property damage and put a general cap on crime. “Just by being out there keeping an eye on things, and passing information on to the police, it eventually puts a good cap on top of what is already happening.”

Graeme Mills, organiser of this weekend’s national community patrols training seminar, says the perception of being a ‘Dad’s Army’ is unfair. “We do get that attitude about being nosey, but we are tasked by the police. We don’t just get in the car and drive around willy-nilly.”

Graeme says it is important to remember they aren’t security officers and their role is simply to observe and provide information to the police to help reduce crime in the community – with a strong focus on minor disorder and graffiti.

“There is no doubt it does make a difference as a deterrent.”

Frustrated at a spate of vandalism that was hitting the Greerton shopping area, Keith Carter was keen to get join together some community-minded people and form a night patrol group.

That was seven years ago – and Keith continues to get a lot of satisfaction out of helping make his neighbourhood a little safer. He helps on the regular two-man patrols in the Tauranga South area, which are looking out for suspicious activity.

“When we came along there was a lot of graffiti happening in our areas but we’ve helped deter a lot of that. It’s not so much about catching people, but about deterring crime.”

After years of leading the Tauranga South operation, Keith has taken more of a backseat in patrol management. But he’s recently been helping organising the national training conference for all community patrol groups that the Tauranga South group is hosting at the racecourse.

Keith is excited about hosting the training seminar here – which is attracting more than 300 patrol members from around the country – saying it makes it easy for more Western Bay patrol members to take part.

The conference includes training sessions on dealing with road trauma, and on identifying possible ‘P’ labs.

Tauranga South Patrol member Rob Potts is among many members of the Western Bay’s eight active patrol groups who are attending the event for the first time – because it is being held on their doorstep.

Rob joined the patrol five years ago after police suggested he get involved when he reported wheels missing from a car in his neighbourhood. “I had gone past earlier and they were on, so I thought that was a bit odd, and the police encouraged me to get involved [in the patrol].”

Rob really enjoys his involvement, and says while he is uncertain if any of his help has directly lead to arrests – he believes the patrol’s visible presence must make a difference.

“I thoroughly enjoy it and would go out every night if they would let me,” says Rob, with a chuckle. “It’s great to help out in the community.”

Like most patrol members, Rob is rostered on for a two-person patrol about once a month, with patrols run Thursdays to Saturdays, from about 8pm “until the action dies down”.

Statistics don’t tell whole story The ‘organisational review’ - instituted two years ago by then-CEO, the late Ken Paterson, in response to this Council’s requirement that the organisation is fit for purpose in this new era of financial restraint - is now finished.

A report this week outlined the statistics: 38.3 full time equivalent positions disestablished, 33.7 FTE new positions created. Budgeted salaries difference shows a saving of $2,058,351 but in actual costs a saving of $1,403,485 was realised.

Costs of the exercise were $1,634,899 of which $933,772 were redundancy payments. That’s the statistical side.

The real effects will be seen and felt in the coming year(s). From where I sit there is no doubt a review was necessary. Council organisation has ballooned during the so called ‘good’ years where staff numbers and salaries had expanded exponentially as a majority of the then-elected members embarked on a big spend up of ratepayers’ money. But the review took far too long. An unfolding exercise of unfortunate happenings dragged out what should have been a three-six month exercise, two years maximum. And for once elected members had no influence over events.

The organisational review is the sole domain of the position of the chief executive. This involved four people who occupied the position over the two years.

That was unfortunately unavoidable. But it meant differing views which meant lack of continuity and consistency. Aspects of some of the consultant’s performances left a lot to be desired, in my opinion – but they got paid just the same. Some good people have left, unnecessarily, in my opinion.

New executive team

There is basically a new executive team lead by new CEO Garry Poole. It’s Garry’s responsibility to implement Council’s annual plan so it’s a positive that his executive team is of his choosing. It means he can get on with the business his way and be fully accountable to Council for the required outcomes. So far Garry’s experience and leadership have been excellent so there is the expectation that the city is on a steady path of sustainable management and financial restraint. Infrastructure spending is receiving priority and decision making is timely and accurate.

Most of this Council’s elected members appear reasonably satisfied that the organisation as it now stands is fit for purpose to take our city forward, with the next challenge to significantly reduce next year’s budgeted rates requirement increase of nine per cent.

Clearly this is unacceptable and the mettle of the new management team will be tested – with the election inbetween – as they prepare next year’s annual plan.

Toll road Route K

Negotiations continue with NZTA. Nothing has changed since I last updated you. NZTA are bound

by Government on what they can and cannot do. This route servicing Tauranga City and the Port is also an essential link for the whole country. Had the Council of the day not embarked on the project by buying

the land and building the road, our roading network would be a shambles today. It does not cost ratepayers (loan interest is capitalised). Projections are for NZTA to take over maintenance if it is declared part of the state highway. NZTA also want to install an electronic toll gantry. This means having an electronic tag on your car or else you can pay online within a few days.

Obviously this is TCC losing control over our road and it really is time for Government to step in, take over the whole package, debt and all. To this end I moved for another meeting with local government MPs Simon Bridges and Tony Ryall to get support at Cabinet level to run in tandem with TCC staff negotiations with NZTA. Interestingly four of our elected members voted against on-going negotiations – Rick Curach, Murray Guy, Catherine Stewart and Bill Grainger. I understand their motivation is a requirement they have to include the Hairini Link into the Route K bargaining.

We approved Statements of Intent outlining Council’s requirement for the Boards of Directors of the CCO’s Tauranga City Investments Ltd and Bay Leisure and Events Ltd who will administrate and manage Baypark, ASB Arena, pools, Baywave and other leisure assets.

Murray Guy and Catherine Stewart did not support the resolutions. In the confidential section Dean Waddell was appointed director of BLEL to take up the mandatory seat on the Board representing Speedway.

This appointment is a requirement from the days when Bob Clarkson owned Baypark.

A couple of weeks ago it was noted in this column that Rick Curach and Larry Baldock were most concerned that some Council employees didn’t receive the ‘living wage’ of $18.65 per hour.

Rick and Larry say they did not say that, and they too share my view that it would be good if all ratepayers could receive a weekly minimum income of $18.65 per hour.

Amalgamation debacles

Wayne Moultrie wants to ‘have a conversation’ on the future of local government in the Bay of Plenty. He says we should be proactive not reactive to amalgamation. Mayor Stuart Crosby says we are doing well by progressing shared services. In my opinion amalgamations/mergers don’t produce economies as witnessed by the Auckland amalgamation debacle.

Over the ditch in Australia they have realised the nonsense that amalgamations can create and ‘de amalgamations’ are underway after only three years of forced amalgamations.

We approved a proposed direction for an Age Friendly City Strategy. I would have thought it was pretty basic stuff but in this modern wold where it seems it’s almost every man for himself (or should that be person?), it has to be spelt out.

I particularly like the bit where it said ‘staff respectful, helpful and trained to serve older people’. That’s staff everywhere. It seems it’s not so and some businesses wonder why they aren’t doing so well?

This little man is one of two delightful, friendly, approximately four-month-old kittens at ARRC. They were found huddled together, cold and wet in an orchard. But these lovely boys have now settled into their accommodation at ARRC and are looking for loving homes.

Snow bunnies will be pleased to know there’s snow on the way.

Unfortunately, I killed a snow bunny in the weekend. However, the rest of you can carry on enjoying the flurry of cold white stuff that is blowing around the nether regions.

The Newshounds took a road trip south to friends on a farm this week, and encountered a fair bit of snow, and I had a great time romping around. It wasn’t my fault the snow bunny decided to do a runner. Someone had to stop it. Turned out the snow bunny was quite big and fast, and probably not a bunny at all. More

like a hare.

But eventually we nailed it. No pest is too fast for Flo’s Hare Removal Services. Hare today, gone tomorrow.

It must have been a very nervous hare, because it lived on the same farm as my friend Reece. He is a retired greyhound, who specialises in chasing the legs off anything resembling a hare or a rabbit.

He can do a lap around the house for every single lap of the clothesline by Lucy the Labrador.

Reece was pretty impressed with my hare, and surprised he’d missed one.

Anyway, Ruapehu opens this weekend for those of you who prefer the more gentile mountain past-times, such as sliding down.

Two metres of snow fell on the mountain in the few days we were travelling.

And if you’re off to the snow, remember to make suitable alternate plans for your critters.

Enthusiastic volunteers had a great day out on the Mount beach last weekend as we celebrated Coast Care’s planting of the one millionth dune plant along our Bay of Plenty coast.

Michelle, who has been teaching for 22 years, notched up the last seven years as a school principal in the Waikato. She is now in her fifth week as principal at Pyes Pa School – and is “delighted” with her new role.

New joint management for Mauao Mount Maunganui’s iconic mountain Mauao will now be governed by both Tauranga City Council and Mauao Trust after a memorandum of understanding was approved this week.

The MOU was approved by the Mauao Trust in May this year and received endorsement by TCC this week.

The MOU sets out the guiding principles for a joint administration board and its broad terms of operation but will not affect public access to Mauao, which TCC says is protected and will continue to be.

Four representatives from TCC and the Mauao Trust will form the joint board that will meet once legislation is put in place and representatives have been appointed.

This is likely to occur around November and will coincide with the disbandment of the Mauao Steering Group.

Mauao will now be governed by a joint board.

One of the new board’s functions will be to review the 1998 reserve management plan that is in place for Mauao.

Mauao Trust Chairman Shane Ashby says the joint management approach is an opportunity to strengthen and develop the relationship between council and iwi.

“The Mauao project team has been actively working behind the scenes to develop the MOU and has developed a great working relationship at an operational level.”

Mayor Stuart Crosby says the MOU is a natural progression in the developing way the historic reserve is taken care of.

The MOU has been more than a year in the making.

In March 2012 Council supported the establishment of a joint administering body.

Mauao Trust member Awanui Black is elated with the signing of the MOU and says a lot of time and work has been put into securing a joint management.

“It’s really good to see we are moving into the next phase for Mauao.

“From here we can work in partnership with Tauranga City Council and Tauranga Moana Iwi and community to preserve, develop and promote one of the country’s greatest icons.” He says one of the key roles for the management board will be preserving the mountain and protecting against natural disasters and degradation including slips.

Making a dent in Tauranga business arena Business, environmental or political – however you dream of a better world – it could be covered at the first Tauranga TEDx talk being held next month.

Starting as a conference 30 years ago to bring together people from the Technology, Entertainment and Design worlds for talks on ‘ideas worth spreading’ – the TED concept has grown with hundreds of TED talks held around the globe.

Inspired by the speeches he was seeing online from other TED talks, project organiser Sheldon Nesdale set his mind on hosting our own event in Tauranga – but was not put off learning he needs to complete a three-day training course to run the large event he wants to.

Instead, Sheldon can run a smaller TEDx Tauranga organisers Dan Necklen, independent TEDx event, with audience Sheldon Nesdale and Marcus Wilkins prepare numbers limited to 100 and only three live for some inspiring speeches at the July event. speakers, along with pre-recorded speeches.

“We want to tell the stories about how

we’ve made a dent in the universe, inspiring others to do the same,” says Sheldon, who is delighted with the strong interest he’s received so far. After putting out an email, 18 helpers lined up to become his organising team – and another 40 people put their hands up to speak. “It’s been very difficult getting from 40 down to nine – we’re hoping to have the final three chosen next week,” says Sheldon. “We’ve got some really interesting local stories on a wide range of topics.”

Sheldon hopes the speakers will offer something for everyone, and says this year’s event is only the beginning. He plans to run a full TED event next year for an audience of at least 1000. To earn the rights to hold a major event, Sheldon is attending a TED conference in Vancouver in March.

Second win for young grower Chris Anstis of Opotiki has won the title of Bay of Plenty Young Grower of the Year for the second time.

Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy presented Chris, 30, with the trophy for the 2013 award at a dinner at ASB Baypark on Wednesday night attended by 200 people from the horticulture industry.

Chris first won the title in 2009 and on Wednesday competed against five other young growers in a series of events. Second was Chris Clement, Kiwifruit Vine Health technical assistant and third Miguel Peterle, Whitehall Fruitpackers orchard manager

from the Waikato. As well as the title and trophy, Chris won $1500 in cash and will now represent the Bay of Plenty at the NZ Young Fruit Grower contest at the HortNZ Conference in July. Chris Clement won $1000 and Miguel, $500.

All six contestants also received a number of prizes from sponsors and for wins in individual sections of the competition.

Chris says it is a thrill to win the title again and that the competition provided by his opponents was tough.

Limb in feed is NZ sheep The animal limb found in palm kernel feed on a Bay of Plenty farm this week is confirmed as being a New Zealand sheep - not exotic goat or deer as suspected last week.

Ministry for Primary Industries Deputy Director General Compliance and Response Andrew Coleman says DNA testing shows the limb is from a New Zealand sheep.

“An independent genetic laboratory

has confirmed the limb is from a sheep, and MPI is confident it is a New Zealand sheep,” says Andrew.

“The farm where the limb was found has sheep, home kill is undertaken, the maggots found on the limb were a species of blowfly found in New Zealand, and most of the PKE supplied goes through a 4mm filter.”

The limb was discovered in May and it took until June 17 for MPI to receive a report from a zoologist that it most likely came from a small deer or goat species not found in New Zealand.

Bay of Plenty avocados set for harvest Avocados on Bay of Plenty harbour and off-shore islands are approved for the picking but recent wet weather is delaying their harvest.

NZ Avocado Growers Association and Avocado Industry Council chairman Ashby Whitehead says the far North and Bay of Plenty coastal orchards such as Motiti

Holiday programmes offer winter fun options Parents: are you stuck for ideas to keep your children entertained during the winter school break next month?

Three holiday programmes each offering different, exciting and fun activities for children are running through the July holidays.

Operating daily from 8am-5.30pm, the established and popular programmes at Papamoa Community Centre, Arataki Community Centre and Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre

Papamoa Community Centre manager Sally Benning says each programme has been specifically and professionally planned to provide safe and fun entertainment for children, with a local location for working and studying parents.

Benefit changes for your family There are changes looming for people on the Domestic Purposes Benefit, and Widow’s Benefit with children under 14.

From July 15, these will now be known as Sole Parent Support.

Along with the change in name comes a change of obligations, and one of those obligations is for children to attend a licensed Early Childhood Education (ECE) service from the age of three. All working-age beneficiaries, with preschool-age children, will be required to take ‘all reasonable steps’ to have their child attend a licensed ECE service for a minimum of 15 hour a week until they start school.

In order to avoid additional cost, parents receiving the Sole Parent Support will need to seek out ECE services willing to accept bookings for the 15 hours a week, without additional charges or booking requirements. At The Village, our 20 FREE ECE – is just that. There are no additional charges or set number of

days in which children must attend in order to benefit from the free hours. If you believe your family will be affected by this requirement, it would be wise to enroll your child as soon as possible in a good childcare service that offers a genuine 20 FREE ECE, as spaces may become limited.

Other requirements will see parents having to take all reasonable steps to ensure their child is enrolled with a general practitioner, or with a medical centre that belongs to a Primary Health Organisation.

Children under five will be required to be up-todate with core Well Child/ Tamariki Ora checks, and children reaching the age of five or six (depending on when they start school) must be enrolled in and attend school.

Giving children a good start is the primary focus of the changes. These expectations are to help make sure children get health checks and education. Most parents and caregivers are doing these things, so the focus is on helping families that need extra support.

Embracing mid-winter feasting The not-so-smartphone gave me reminder the other day about attending a mid-winter feast down country among the snow.

As I was unable to attend, I can only imagine the loads of food being consumed – and in front of a roaring fire and snow falling outside. A lot of companies and families have a Christmas-themed mid-winter feasts – what is all that about? Maybe it’s just a conspiracy theory but I think it’s just a ploy by the big multinationals to use up the well-preserved Christmas puddings, and frozen turkeys that food warehouses

have stored since Christmas.

Then I got thinking about my favourite winter foods, which you can make in bulk and feast on for several nights. The all-time favourite is a beef stew I had as a child. It was cooked in a pressure cooker with dumplings.

Thankfully, once again as I’m writing this, the sun is shining and there is not a cloud in the sky.

So it’s hard to be cooking up a typical chilly mid-winter comfort food.

But as the temperature plummets at night, the beef stew and blue cheese dumplings recipe for this week will go down a treat.

¼ cup olive oil sea salt and black pepper 1kg diced beef rump or blade steak 1 large brown onion, diced 4-6 cloves finely sliced garlic 2 medium size swedes, peeled and diced 2 large carrots, diced 4 celery sticks 2-3 bay leaves 1 glass red wine 2L water 1L beef stock 3-4 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce ¼ cup chopped flat leaf parsley

Dumplings ingredients 2 cups plain four 1 tsp sugar 1 tsp salt ½ tsp cracked black pepper 2 tsp baking powder 100g Danish blue cheese ½ cup chopped flat leaf parsley 1 ½ cups of milk Method First, in batches, seal off the diced beef in a heavy bottom pot seasoning as you go. Place in a casserole dish or slow cooker. Sauté the onion in the same pot, adding a little more oil if needed. When soft, add the garlic then the other vegetables and cook for a few minutes. Add to the casserole dish and add red wine. Add the water and bring to the boil, add beef stock; and simmer for one and a half hours.

Make the dumplings by sifting the flour, salt, sugar and baking powder together in a bowl. Crumble in the blue cheese, add chopped parsley then stir in the milk to form stiff dough. Take out about one litre of stock from the casserole dish and heat in a wide saucepan. Place large dollops of dumpling mix in pan; and cover and cook on a gentle simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Serve dumplings on top of casserole. This is when you can add rest of pan juices, Worcester sauce and chopped parsley.

Sheryl’s quilt has got it covered A chance meeting with ex-All Black Frank Bunce inspired Sheryl Farrow to create a snapshot of Bay of Plenty sport – with a twist.

The retired Tauranga woman is mid-way through making a large colourful quilt, donning signed silhouettes of the region’s past, present and rising sports stars – which she will sell to raise money for St John.

A month or so in, the quilt is pinned together and Sheryl is in the process of collecting signatures – currently waiting for Sam Cane, Mahe Drysdale and Lisa Carrington. Other names gracing the quilt include

volleyball’s Edwin O’Dae, kayaking’s Luuka Jones, netball’s Irene Van Dyk and Yachting’s Peter Burling.

“I got Gordon Tietjens on the day he became Sir. So I pushed my luck and got it [his signature] sent back to be re-signed.”

Sheryl has been quilting on and off for more than 30 years, creating more than 20 quilts, including one that raised $1800 for Kaitaia Hospice. While it’s a relaxing activity, she thinks more than 100 hours will go into the quilt by the time it’s finished – but says the effort is worth it to raise awareness and funding for St John.

“I’m pleased with the way it’s come together, and without St John the town would be up the creek without a paddle.”

Sheryl originally wanted to hold a raffle for the quilt, but is now considering approaching corporate entities in the hope it would raise more money.

“We’d kind of like it to stay in Tauranga, so we’re thinking of maybe getting it hung at ASB Arena and get sponsors. Whatever makes the most money.”

lowing sacrifices: • Cutting back on leisure activities (49 per cent) and vacations (47 per cent); • Saving less, or not at all, for their children’s future (38 per cent); • Using their savings (34 per cent); • Cutting back on basics, such as clothing, utilities or transportation (27 per cent), and groceries (25 per cent); • Cutting back on personal medical or dental expenses (23 per cent).

Here’s an interesting observation from a study participant that will relate to you: “Time is the most expensive commodity I provide – but it has no price tag,” one caregiver wrote in a diary. Despite the sacrifice, caregivers also said it was a commitment they made willingly.

Study respondents reported on the personal and emotional

impact which includes: • Heightened stress or anxiety (65 per cent); • Difficulty sleeping (49 per cent); • Increased financial worries (43 per cent); • Depression or hopelessness (37 per cent); • New or worsening health problems (26 per cent).

Overseas commitments have previously prevented him from contesting the legendary 100-mile (160 km) race near Kawerau.

“I’ve done a bit of cross-country racing over the years but I’ve never been able to race the Tarawera 100 because I’ve been overseas at that time. This will be my first crack at it and I’m really looking forward to it,” says Ben. “I know it’s going to be pretty gruelling, so I’ve been prompted to get off the coach and do a bit of training,” laughed Ben, who says he has recovered from his injury and is now 100 per cent fit.

“It’s one of the toughest races around but I really

just want to have some fun and I don’t have any real expectations.”

The weekend prior he is racing in a similar endurance race across Australian desert, in what he believes will be ideal preparation.

Organisers say while the venue will be the same as last season, on bush and farmland near Te Teko, about 30 per cent of it will be on freshly-cut track with many sections bulldozed and changed to create a new course.

Motocross riders flying provincial flag Top Bay motocross riders will compete this weekend at the fourth annual Battle of the Clubs.

The event in Taupo, which is a fundraiser to help send a three-rider national team to contest the annual Motocross of Nations in Germany this year, will see Bay of Plenty’s top riders put aside their traditional rivalries as they band together under provincial colours.

The format used for racing this weekend will be very similar to what the Team New Zealand trio can expect when they line up in Germany, against international teams from around the world this September.

This weekend, riders will align club loyalties, uniting under regional flags to find out which one club is the best in New Zealand motocross.

Consistency has seen this year’s host, Taupo Motorcycle Club, win last year’s

third annual Battle of the Clubs motocross. But it was the Tauranga team’s Cody Cooper, and Rotorua A team’s Dion Picard, who were stand-out individuals – being the only riders to finish the day unbeaten last year.

Cooper won the MX1/veterans combined race and the MX1/MX2 combined race, while Mount Maunganui’s Rhys Carter was among top performers in the MX2 class last year.

Organisers hope the event will raise a similar amount to $9000 generated last year to support New Zealand’s three-rider entry to 2012’s Motocross of Nations – the event rated as ‘the Olympic Games of motocross’.

The team of three riders (plus a reserve), to represent New Zealand in September, will be named in July.

Twice a day keeps the dentist away Eight Pyes Pa junior school children are showing others how fun it is to brush their teeth –taking their message to the world with a video entered in the Colgate Creative Challenge.

After reading about the competition in a magazine called ‘Starters and Strategies’, Gifted and Talented Education

teacher Demelza Pendergrast pitched the idea to the school.

There are eight six-to-seven-year-old taking part in the film. Once selected, the cast took about 15hours, spread across five weeks, to complete the threeminute film. During planning stages, students sought advice from their visiting dental nurses about how to care for their teeth and mouths to ensure they were correctly looking after their teeth.

Then, they incorporated their findings into their video clip.

After working on several drama activities to help portray expression and emotion when acting, the students took turns to film the video.

Demelza says after some “mixed up lines and some giggling”, students had a go at editing the final product. “Not only have the children further developed skills in drama, management, and film editing and recording, they have learned more about how to look after their teeth.

“I did have one parent mention to me that their child now insists on brushing their teeth twice-aday as opposed to the usual once in the morning, after creating this short film.” The Colgate Creative Challenge winners are announced today. First prize is $1000 for spending on sport, art or music supplies.

Pyes Pa School principal Michelle Thurlow says the challenge was a creative way for younger students to work as a team.

“They did an amazing job and we are all very proud of their efforts.”

Addressing sunburn and skin cancer Could sunburn cause skin cancer? Yes – especially if it occurs frequently during many years.

The most common skin cancers are basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas and melanoma.

While many factors can cause skin cancer, such as genetic (hereditary) syndromes, arsenic and immune suppression; the most common cause is ultraviolet radiation. In fact, ultraviolet radiation is a Category 1 carcinogen. This means prolonged exposure to the sun will cause skin cancer and tanning beds/sunbeds will cause skin cancer. Sunburn occurs when the skin is burned by ultraviolet radiation. Skin cells die and an inflammatory response follows. A lifetime of constant sun exposure and sunburns will increase your risk. There is often a delay between sun exposure and the development of skin cancer. For instance, in basal cell carcinomas, up to 10 years could elapse before the skin cancer develops. In other cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma, the time may be shorter. Early detection could save your life. Your dermatologist is your best source of information for questions and concerns relating to your skin and is skilled in detection of skin cancers.

The benefits of dry July I’m all for a good cause – and a ‘dry July’ is a good cause. A not-for-profit organisation, is aiming to make July dry by asking you to give up booze for 31 days to raise funds for adults living with cancer.

I’m all for a quiet wine, and I have taken a great liking to craft beer of late. But I’m big on limiting alcohol and changing the way we view alcohol in this country. One glass of wine isn’t a big deal, catching up with your mates for a beer after work (note I say ‘a’ beer) is great – but drinking to excess is a drag. A drag on your body, a drag on society

as you conform to an out-dated stereotype – and a drag on the ‘health dollar’ as your body (and mind) deteriorate over time. My definition of ‘to excess’ is probably different to yours.

One standard drink per hour is recommended, for example 125ml of wine, one stubby of beer or a nip of spirits. There are not many people who confine themselves to just one standard drink. Why? What is it about alcohol that makes people want or need to drink to excess? Alcohol is a chemical, in concentrated form it sterilises surfaces, and ethanol is even used to fuel race cars. How can putting it in our bodies be

any good at all? The health effects of long-term alcohol use are wellknown – and note I say ‘alcohol use’ – not ‘alcohol abuse’. Most people who drink, drink too much from a health point of view.

Why do we need to drink alcohol to be social?

Why on earth do we need to over-indulge? Alcohol does little good for anyone, and if you think it does good for you, you’re looking in the wrong place for goodness my friend. If we could change the face of alcohol use, we’d be healthier, happier and we’d be wealthier – as individuals and as a society. Think about why you choose to drink, think about the kind of life you want to have as you grow older. Think about the quality of that life. Look after your body – it’s the only place you’ve got to live.

B vitamins protect against Alzheimer’s The UK’s Daily Mail recently published an editorial that established links between B vitamins and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

The story was based on recent research, confirming the close relationship between the long-term intake of three B vitamins and the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. This was based on a UK Government study (OIPTIMA) at Oxford University; and concluded that there is a clear link between high levels of a with John Arts dangerous compound, called homocysteine, and elevated risk of AD. The B vitamins B6, folate and B12 have many functions and play an active role in protein metabolism. One of their roles is to breakdown harmful homocysteine to harmless acetylcholine.

The study confirmed that people with AD had high levels of homocysteine and low levels of these three B vitamins.

My view has always been that supplementation of these three B vitamins is essential. These should be in any good multi-vitamin supplement. However, it is important to see brain health with a much wider perspective; and ensure that both diets and supplements protect and nourish brain cells.

Vitamin D is known to have a protective role in brain function and low levels have been linked to dementia, and many mental health issues including depression and seasonal affective disorder. Antioxidants, especially the OPC’s, can cross the blood brain barrier to protect brain cells. The Omega 3 DHA in fish oil is one of the brain’s preferred fats and is nec-

essary for good nerve function. For brain health you should base everything on an anti-inflammatory diet, rich in good fats and lots of vegetables. With supplements, your daily multi should have a B complex and the antioxidants needed to protect brain cells.

Making positive, healthy choices Year 9 and 10 students at Tauranga Girls’ College are one step closer to making positive choices for their health and wellbeing. On July 3, the college is hosting a ‘Health Expo’ at the school hall.

Mascot ‘Stan’ hits the dunes A large and loveable dog was the star guest at last weekend’s celebrations in Mount Maunganui to mark the one millionth planting on Bay of Plenty dunes by Coast Care volunteers.

‘Stan’ the dog, mascot for the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management’s ‘What’s the plan, Stan?’, is a reminder that native plantings on the region’s beach dunes do more than make the beach look pleasant, says Civil Defence Emergency Management regional manager Clinton Naude.

Many of the region’s beach dunes had been damaged during the years by grazing stock, excavation for development, proliferation of weeds and trampling by people and vehicles, says Clinton.

The work the Coast Care volunteers undertake, in replanting the dunes, was vital to stabilise them.

The major storm, which has brought heavy snow and destructive weather in many parts of the country, is a reminder that having stable beach dunes is an important part of the region’s natural defences.

“The dunes are an important feature for the Bay of Plenty, which relies on stable coastal dunes as a first defence in storm surges,” says Clinton. “We were fortunate this time not to experience the worst of the weather. But the work being done by Coast Care is vital to protect beach communities and infrastructure.”

Clinton urges Bay of Plenty families to ensure they have prepared a plan for emergencies, including winter storms, floods, tsunami and earthquakes.

A $32million state-of-the-art solar power radiotherapy facility is being boasted as the only one in New Zealand to use solar power.

The cancer unit is being built on the Tauranga Hospital campus and will be one of seven units in New Zealand.The new unit will allow patients to receive radiation treatment in the Bay of Plenty, while still benefiting from being part of the wider Midland Cancer Network, says BOPDHB chairperson Sally Webb.

“We acknowledge how well the Hamilton Cancer Centre treats our patients, and the superb accommodation the Lions Cancer Lodge provides them.”

About 500 people from the Bay of Plenty receive radiation treatment in Hamilton each year.Bay Radiotherapy Services managing director and Bay of Plenty clinician Mark Fraundorfer says years of planning have gone into this environmentally-advanced, energy efficient radiotherapy facility.

“The sun’s rays will, in effect, power the linear accelerators. It’s amazing progress for science.

“Radiotherapy is an essential service for the people of the Bay of Plenty, and it’s long overdue.”

He says once the centre is complete it will offer the most advanced radiotherapy equipment in New Zealand for Bay of Plenty patients, “and without their having to travel to other centres”.

Hotel makes way for development The Tauranga Hotel’s 90-year run will come to an end as it makes way for a multi-million dollar construction, as developers look to continue revitalising The Strand.

After being built in 1930 on the corner of The Strand and Harington St, the hotel is being replaced with The Lofts – a threestorey development to be built during the next nine months.

The 1930s art deco style hotel was home to the Grumpy Mole Saloon on the bottom floor from November 1997, before shutting early this year.

Identified by Tauranga City Council, back in 2011, as one of 110 earthquake-prone buildings in the area, the site’s development is part of JWL Investments’ plans to transform the block – of Willow, Harington and Hamilton streets – into a five-level office tower, café, restaurant and retail complex with two level carparks.

Lady Rose Dairy, a company associated with Tauranga’s Waddell family, obtained consent from Tauranga City Council late last year for the retail, entertainment and office development scheme.

The project will see areas, currently occupied by City Markets, Central Backpackers and the Grumpy Mole, taken over.

Williams, a spokesperson for the development, says it is pleasing to have construction underway, and expects building to be finished in next March.

“We are delighted to see some action down on The Strand for some time now. Particularly off the back of the successful development of the Phoenix.

“I think we are beginning to see The Strand being revitalised.”

The Lofts will include entertainment on the ground floor, along with half of the first floor, and remaining space allocated for businesses.

The Grumpy Mole Saloon is going to be replaced by a more upmarket tavern, with rumours circling it could be Lonestar Restaurant, but Peter could not comment.

The office space is yet to be filled with tenants and there is no set dollar value for the development at this stage. “In terms of construction costs it’s well in excess of a couple of million.”

Peter says the only option developers have is to demolish the hotel building and start from scratch, because of the earthquake-related issues. “It’s

one of the essential reasons for looking at a new building as opposed to re-strengthening a very, very old building, which has been guttered by fire on three separate occasions.”

Priority One city centre manager Duarne Lankshear says the construction is only going to improve and enhance The Strand; and will draw interest and business to what he sees as an under-used area of Tauranga.

“It is another positive sign for the CBD with new buildings under construction and it will be a good vote of confidence,” says Duarne.

“It stimulates another new redevelopment, and new building always do that, as old buildings don’t step up to the mark.”

He sees the recent earthquake issues as a good spin-off, and hopes this is the start of confidence in Tauranga’s CBD, where convenience retailing and offices can grow.

To support this ,why are we at this time currently modifying the footpath on Elizabeth Street and undertaking road works on the cnr Cameron Road and 12th Avenue? Why are we spending money on three pedestrian crossings, with the loss of 17 parking spaces, at The Mall?

Time for change so let’s hope that we have a good selection of people standing this coming Local Body election.

While we were sleeping: Apartheid The suggestion that Kiwis don’t need to worry about the Maori Party-initiated review of our constitution is ill-advised.

Under MMP, we’ve seen both sides of the House tip-toeing around all things Maori, and passing related legislation without any hard questions being asked about the truth, the justifications or the long term ramifications for all of us. In our own little worlds, it can be easy to think all is OK. But looking a bit deeper into undemocratic Maori influence on councils, government department propaganda, education and health organisations and you’ll be amazed at what’s going on and what it’s costing us.

has been securing itself. How can a racist regime be a good thing for Maori if it destroys New Zealand in the long term? The strategy for the constitutional review so far has been based on warm and fuzzy language that doesn’t upset the punters.

So when the new constitution is passed by unprincipled politicians on both sides of the House, the truth will only gradually emerge as judges make their decisions on what it means in every day life. Judges who can’t be voted out at the next election. Only at that point, will Kiwis realise that they should have taken more interest.

What anti-Maori letters?

What anti Maori letters? In response to Peter Dey’s letter, I do not think that the letters over the last few weeks are, or were, intended to be anti Maori, they are just what people are feeling about the way this country is heading and a belief that we all should live under one law, one people, one rule system. And that they are fed up with struggling while a minority group seems to have it handed on a plate in some aspects.

You stated that treaty settlements are not costing that much, seen the total combined Maori assets has passed the $7 billion mark, you will not mind that Maori should stand on their own two feet, rather than the using of the taxpayers’ dollar.

And finally as for getting better recognition, get over it, we all deserve that. The whole idea of a constitution and a republic is to change the system and leave the old behind, if you’re too hung up on the past then we can never move forward.

Happy Hopper rider

I commute every day from Omokoroa to Tauranga and cannot speak highly enough of the Bay Hopper service. It is prompt and reliable, the driver is helpful and cheerful.

It makes the journey to work so much easier and I arrive in a relaxed frame of mind, all the better to do my job. I can mentally plan my day while enjoying the glorious landscape. It is also a popular theory that using public transport is ‘greener’ - it is certainly cheaper.

When I have to start early or work late I take my car.

Another advantage of taking the bus means there is a professional driver at the wheel. I don’t have to watch out for reckless petrolheads whose only aim is to get there faster than everyone else.

Whose desperation to be in front means they tailgate vehicles they can’t overtake. Oops - I let my prejudice get the better of me there! Of course not all drivers are thoughtless speed-freaks; neither are they ‘crocheting squares on their way to bridge’.

Most are considerate and tolerant and willing to share the road. Life is stressful enough without getting wound up over something so trivial. Otherwise you’ll stress yourself into a heart attack - which certainly would slow you down.

Two people charged in relation to a string of events – including the death of 18-year-old Jovaan Graham in the lower Kaimai Ranges in April – have had their case transferred to the High Court at Rotorua.

Thomas McDonald, 30, and Cheyanne McCausland, 23, are charged with kidnapping, injuring with intent to injure, aggravated robbery and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

Their case was heard in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday, where they were committed to trial in the High Court at Rotorua and will next appear on August 15.

More jail time for Mount man

A Mount Maunganui man has had an extra 18 months added to his existing jail sentence, after admitting to attacking two women last year.

Phillip Hunter pleaded guilty to one count of injuring with intent to injure, and was discharged on a count of grievous bodily harm on June 5 when he appeared in Tauranga District Court.

The charges relate to an attack that put two women in hospital in July last year.

The presiding judge sentenced him to 18 months prison – added to his existing sentence of two years and three months for stabbing his brother.

A Bay of Plenty man, who ran over two young girls in Ohope, will meet with the victims’ families before he is sentenced.

Ramon Lee Hussey, 43, was due to be sentenced in Whakatane District Court on June 19, after pleading guilty to two charges of drink driving causing injury and one charge of driving with a suspended licence.

On May 4, Hussey was reversing out of an alleyway when he struck two girls, aged four and seven, walking along Pohutukawa Ave about 2.20pm.

His sentencing is now re-scheduled for July 17.

Spike in road crashes disappoints

Police are disappointed with Western Bay of Plenty drivers after a spike in the number of road crashes last weekend.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the eight crashes at the weekend is the typical weekly toll.

Seven of the eight crashes – including a van that rolled on Pyes Pa Rd, moderately injuring the passenger– happened on Saturday, June 22.

“It’s really disappointing to find that there are that many accidents in one day in Tauranga when it’s often the total for the week,” says Ian. “People need to start taking care out there.”

We had been informed that because we had overpaid rates, last year, that there was a possibly that this year’s rate outcome could be nil or even better minus but we did end up with a rate rise of around 2%.

However, more disturbing was the information, reported in Faulkner’s Corner (Weekend Sun 14 June) that the increase for next year (2014/15) is presently estimated at 9% yes 9%.

Be very afraid ratepayers as it seems that as it is an election year that the current councillors have decided to keep rates low, this year, and then slam us next and probably also successive years.

Being on a sickness benefit is not something you can plan for, it is different to a unemployment benefit. On the unemployment benefit you can look for work or get casual work to top up your benefit. On the sickness benefit this is not an option.

I am a 62-year-old and I can tell you that it is a miserable way to spend the so-called “twilight years”.

A total of 14,745 induced abortions were performed in 2012 – 1118 less than in 2011, according to Statistics New Zealand.

Last year’s figures for individual regions are still unknown, but Abortion Supervisory Committee’s 2011 statistics puts Bay of Plenty abortion figures as the fifth highest in New Zealand. This is behind Waikato, Canterbury, Wellington and Auckland – which recorded the highest number.

Tauranga spokesperson for the Abortion Law Reform Association, Alison McCulloch says a decrease in numbers is good but she does not want to see people denied abortions.

The Treaty of Waitangi was never recognised in international law and was never part of our municipal law.

Generally, the Treaty does not create any legal rights

There is always something ‘folksy’ about Wellington people many of whom seem to have little else to do but collect Government, bureaucratic, tertiary pay cheques for undertaking so-called ‘research’ usually with a view to criticising those who live in the real world .

Enough said! On cue out of the woodwork pops Kate MacIntyre, Social Anthropologist, at one-time with Department of Anthropology, Victoria University and more recently a Scoping reporter with the widely discredited Waitangi Tribunal giving her slant on things Maori from the ‘intelligentsia’ viewpoint. Her use of words like jurisprudence (law) and normative (setting a standard) to muddy the waters give us a clue on the mindset.

It appears Ms MacIntyre is the author of ‘Distributive Justice and Indigenous Restitution in New Zealand and South Africa, a brief history’, I ask what the hell do South Africa and New Zealand have in common, pray, tell? - it is chalk and cheese territory.

Ms. MacIntyre, please stick with your cloistered academic clique and leave the commentary on real issues in the real world to real people, free from the cultural PC garbage you and your ilk spew forth.

Go read some of the writings of Sir Peter Buck (Te Rangi Hiroa) a noted anthropologist and in particular his views on the evil of separatism. Oh, yes and while we are at it, the Treaty of Waitangi has never had any constitutional significance and Maori are not indigenous to New Zealand.

Chiefs ceded sovereignty It is remarkable what a bit of research will find these days! Now we have Kate MacIntyre of Wellington discovering (your columns, 21/6/13) that while the Maori chiefs ceded “legal sovereignty” when they signed the Treaty of Waitangi, they did not cede “political sovereignty”. This is in spite of the fact that the Treaty says “The chiefs ... cede to the Queen of England for ever the entire Sovereignty of their country” - “Ko nga Rangitira ... ka tuku rawa atu ki te Kuini o Ingarani ake tonu atu-te Kawanatanga katoa o ratou wenua.”

There are quite enough falsehoods and lies swirling around the Treaty these days without anybody from a think tank in Wellington adding some more.

Unfortunately, there is a good underlying reason for the focus on these divisive matters at present, and I congratulate Christina for her untiring drive to inform the public, one way or another, of dark doings going on behind our backs, driven by the Maori Party hierarchy (oh dear, another ‘them and us’ scenario) As a democratic nation, we are supposed to be in charge of our law-making process. The above move is designed to take that right from us, to hand it to the legal profession and to lock in the Treaty of Waitangi.

It’s been extensively discussed in these letters. And the unthinkable consequences. I won’t bore you, as it is gradually being drawn into the open. Keep your eyes and ears open. Watch out for meetings or advertising.

Axe flame tree The Weekend Sun 14/6/13 and 21/6/13 (Faulkner’s Corner) describes how we have an ugly Aussie pest in the lovely Matua suburb, so let’s get rid of it! This Kurrajong /Illawarra Flame tree due to some bureaucratic bungling is on the protected tree list which apparently does not include Australian trees.

Yet the owners of 227 Levers Rd will have to apply for a resource consent which Councillor Faulkner confirms is a lengthy and expensive process. Come on Tauranga City Councillors have some compassion, bend the rules and get the resource consent yourselves and have the tree removed!

It is not the property owners fault that this abomination of a tree was put on the protected list.

The root system has previously caused damage to the footpath and Mr and Mrs Lauder’s driveway is in shocking mess. Mr Lauder is endeavouring to recover from a severe stroke and the stress of this unfortunate situation is in no way assisting with his recovery.

Councillor Faulkner confirms the tree has been hacked around to keep clear of power lines and doesn’t even look appealing.

I’m sure the residents of Matua would all agree with that. Tauranga City Council I appeal to you to get rid of this Aussie pest.

‘Poverty’ cannot apply How revealing to view TV 3’s Vote programme, Wednesday 19 June. It was a snapshot of middle NZ views. The debate question was ‘can child abuse and lack of feeding some children be attributed to poor parenting or lack of money’.

The winning debate team claimed it was parenting, the TV audience said via their clickers it was parenting and the texts from NZ citizens also claimed parenting.

The percentage of results ranged from 62% to 67%.

When the cost of one packet of cigarettes will purchase 2x2 litre bottles of milk, 2 loaves of bread, 1 packet of cereal and 2 kg of apples there is no excuse for children going to school without breakfast.

The emotive word ‘poverty’ cannot apply to NZ families. We have a burgeoning welfare system with the addition of Working for Families alongside charitable Food Banks and very cheap Op shops.

There are many other countries who can truly claim to have people in poverty but they still prioritise the loving and feeding of their children.

The message to politicians, policy makers and do-gooders must be that what they are doing is not working and it is that group of ostriches who should be doing better for the citizens and tax payers of NZ. Maureen J Anderson, Pyes Pa.

Slow down and show some sense Responding to Simon Loveridge: I would place a bet that you are one of those arrogant drivers, who think they are bullet proof, and either sit on my bumper travelling too close, or speed up and pass, even though I am travelling within the required speed limit for that area and you break the law to pass!

You are also probably one of those arrogant drivers who give me the fingers sign, when I pull over in a safe place, to let you pass, even though I am doing the speed limit. Once again you would be at fault and breaking the law.

If this is such a big issue for you,why don,t you leave home 10 minutes earlier or better still get a job in your own home town, we do not need crazy drivers on our roads.

I have travelled between Hewletts Rd and Bayfair roundabout for over 20 years, at least twice a week in peak traffic times, no problem. If there is a problem it is from impatient drivers.

Yes, I’m a golden oldie, I have been driving since 1943, starting in a model T Ford ,taking the milk to the factory, while my dearest Dad was on Home Guard Duty, protecting our beautiful country, for people like you.

I am still driving and have no endorsements at all on my licence.

I think you should take back your unkind remarks about Alison and Graeme. So why don’t you.... Slow down and show some sense.

Mighty road warriors In reply to Simon: It is a shame that so many of our mighty road warriors have to sublimate their instincts by travelling a puny 100km/h.

And why should they use indicators or not tailgate mere mortals in inferior vehicles struggling to make the required limit.

Especially when you consider their mighty steeds, equipped with ramming bars and ridiculously overpowered engines could easily ram the detritus off the road.

Naturally they should be allowed right of way on all roundabouts at any stage and the mandatory 1½ car park spaces. I am amazed and awed by the sheer restraint of such drivers.

I enjoyed this immensely. It’s unpredictable and raises a host of ethical and moral issues in an intelligent way without distracting from the main story arc. The cast are good and Soderbergh’s direction, the mix of filming styles and use of colour - again very European - is masterful. Well worthwhile.

Beautiful Creatures was not a film I was especially looking forward to, what with its tag as a “Twilight for teen boys”. What did those boys do to deserve it? Actually, I thought it was much better than that, keeping the soppiness to a minimum as young Ethan, bored with small town Bible Belt America, meets mysterious new schoolgirl Lena.

She’s a witch (by another name) and, approaching her sixteenth birthday, must turn to either the dark or light side. Silly, but extra marks for Jeremy Irons hamming it up as the family patriarch and some amusing business with fundamentalist Christians.

Hitchcock isn’t the greatest but, if you’ve ever taken pleasure from the Master of Suspense or enjoyed watching Psycho, it’s a lot of fun. Anthony Hopkins plays Hitchcock, looking weird but getting the voice perfectly: it’s a pleasure to watch his impersonation. Helen Mirren is, of course, a delight as his sharp-tongued wife Alma. Kudos too to James D’Arcy for his remarkable Anthony Perkins. The film itself is a combination of two oft-told staples: director battling studio and artist realising how much he needs his cherished collaborator. For dark and nasty psychological stuff wait for “the other Hitchcock film”, The Girl, which moves on from Psycho to The Birds, with Toby Jones as Hitch.

ParaNorman is yet another in the current line of animated kids movies with horror themes. Think Hotel Transylvania and Frankenweenie. This one comes from the same stable as Coraline and uses the same stop motion technique. It involves young Norman, who can see dead people (all over the place) and is, understandably I guess, a bit of a horror nut. He has to free the town from an old curse which sees zombies rising from their graves to threaten the townsfolk. There are some good lessons learned and – like Coraline - some surprisingly intense moments. Perhaps that’s why the (under 8-year-old) kids I tried it on were too frightened to watch.

Rotary Club members drink whisky to fundraise for youth The Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise will be raising money for youth projects by hosting a whisky tasting evening next month – as a memorial fundraiser to their late fellow Rotarian and friend Phil Withy.

Technicolour production Robbie O’Hara and Tomasi Warren are ready to perform.

Tauranga Boys’ College is getting ready to present its most colourful performance yet.

Anchored by a 37-voice cast, the college is bringing to life a modern version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ in a musical director Andrew Mckenzie describes as “bright, colourful and optimistic”.

Based on the story from Genesis, the production re-tells the story of Joseph’s adventures with his brothers, as he journeys from being a humble farmer with a knack for predicting the future to reaching the highest levels of government and leading a nation.

Andrew says the college’s version of the performance is ambitious, setting the musical in contemporary times.

“It’s a story about a character who begins in a humble setting and then explores the different echelons of society – a little bit like the colours of his coat.”

Andrew says the cast has worked hard to create separate scenes which depict the different societal aspects Joseph faces along his journey.

With the secret to a good production being a good cast, Andrew is amazed at the dedication of his students. “They have put hours of rehearsal time into the production with three demanding rehearsals each week,” he says.

From July 2-6 the show is set to be staged at the college’s Graham Young Youth Theatre. Show times are 7pm each night, with Saturday also hosting a 2pm matinee.

Tickets cost $25 per adult and $15 per student, available at TicketDirect and Baycourt’s ticket office.

Mid-year concert focussing on French Bay of Plenty Symphonia's mid-year concert, Enchantee, presents music by French composers only and in three of the works, a harp is required.

The orchestra is in the unique position of being able to perform Claude Debussy's ‘Prelude for the afternoon of the Faun’ which requires two harps on stage and they will be played by guest harpist Ingrid Bauer – alongside the orchestra's own harpist, Margaret Harper.

This is an iconic work, one of the most influential pieces in music history.

It was Claude's first orchestral work and is considered a quintessential impressionist work: a wonderful fluid piece full of colour and atmosphere.

Ingrid Bauer holds a Bachelor of Music in performance. She has recently returned from a trip to the Dutch Harp Competition where she reached the quarter finals. Ingrid says it was a most inspiring experience with many opportunities to listen and learn. Later, in August, she will be touring with SHE, the Seven Harps Ensemble throughout New South Wales, Australia.

Ingrid presently plays with the NZSO: a superb programme of music by Debussy, Faure, Bizet, Berlioz and Ravel, which includes the full orchestra bursting forth with Berlioz's Ouverture Le Carnaval Romain. Berlioz was considered the ultimate ‘romantic’ composer in France with his music somewhat erratic and a little crazy.

The harp features again in Ravel's ‘Introduction and Allegro’ and Claude's ‘Sacred and Secular Dances’.

The concert is at Baycourt on Sunday, July 7 at 2pm, with conductor Justus Rozemond.

Reflecting generosity Home ownership (along with an OE) is often promoted as the quintessential Kiwi dream.

Imagine a Miss Universe Pageant where contestants are asked their number one dream in life. Miss France declares “Oh la la, zee world peace”.

Miss Sweden announces “Ya da skool for a da childrenz of da world”.

It’s not hard to imagine Miss New Zealand saying “Oh to get out of the rental and buy my own pad”.

We’re obsessed with owning. The world is obsessed with owning – houses, cars, franchises, water rights, air space, letters arranged in a particular sequence, even ideas; immaterial concepts, can supposedly be owned. From a Christian perspective is ownership really such a big deal?

In Psalm 24:1-2 we discover the whole earth and everything in it to be God’s. Deuteronomy 8:17-18 explains even the power to earn or attain is a gift. So, what we possess really belongs to God and any sense of having earned it, attained it by right, or of having achieved it by our own merits fails to recognise the actual ability to earn, attain and achieve is ultimately a gift in and of itself.

Of course many people steward that which has been gifted to them better than others, but the foundational

principle is always gift. The point being that: life isn’t about ownership, possession and earned privileges, but rather about generously reflecting the same generosity God has extended to us.

Generosity is an overarching way of orienting yourself towards everybody and everything that is birthed in understanding how generous God has been with us.

Generosity is a way of being in the world that is independent of how much stuff you actually have.

It is a way of orienting yourself and interacting with others that has almost nothing to do with how much stuff you actually have.

I’ve met wealthy people who are stingy. I’ve met wealthy people who are incredibly generous. I’ve met poor people who are stingy. I’ve met poor people that are generous. Generosity is about reflecting that which God has shown us. The Gospel, salvation, grace, is all about generosity. God is generous with us in the midst of our stumbling, bumbling, sinful, brokenness. God generously sends his Son, redeems us, reconciles, forgives, and restores us.

Then in response to that overwhelming and lavish generosity we become reflections of generosity in the world, reflections of grace, reflections of a good God.

Slowing down and taking stock Most of us don’t relish the thought of winter, even though the Bay of Plenty has a mild climate.

For the Celtics, who lived close to nature, the harsh winter was a time to slow down and take stock of things – to keep and preserve life through the rigour of cold days and long nights. There is something comforting about woollen hats and gloves, simmering soup and glowing fires.

In Celtic spirituality, God speaks through the world around us: plant growth that slows down, views expanding through bare branches that were obscured by summer leaves, less daylight for getting out and about.

We notice that animals huddle together against the cold, tight buds protect petals; and snow offers an insulating layer to everything beneath it. So there is also a call to share the warmth of hospitality and protect

life that is vulnerable.

There are a few weeks of winter still ahead. In our technologically-driven, busy existence, when we are reminded of how much we are affected by
