Photo by Tracy Hardy After a year apart studying across the country, upcoming Tauranga alt-rock band Eyes of May are polishing their act to perform in front of their biggest audience yet in the Mount New Year’s Eve Concert.

The concert has been a long time coming for the band, who mention dreams they had as teenagers

of playing at the Bay’s top New Year celebrations.

Last December, the band won a place performing at the Mount concert through a Tauranga City Council competition, but terrible weather forced the cancellation of the event.

Keyboard and trumpet player Blair Shepherd says everyone in the six-member band is excited about

the opportunity and says intense practising since their returns from university a month ago is paying off. “When we first got back together it took a bit, but we’re sounding better than ever now. “We’ve got high ambitions for the band, but for the moment we all just want to focus on our

degrees and do the band thing over summer.�

Eyes of May will perform at the Beach Stage (near Commons Ave) from 8.30-9pm.

MSix, second place winners in last year’s voter competition, will play from 8-8.30pm. A full line-up of the event is in the council’s Great Kiwi Summer Passport.

Young woman in the shoe Welcome back to the last remnants of the year, I see you are all looking very relieved that the world didn’t end last Friday.

The year will end, however in a few days. This column would not be complete without a few seasonal warnings. After all, the PC brigade is out in full force, keeping us safe from ourselves and the myriad of hazards waiting out there in summerland to snare us.

We started compiling safety messages, but in the end, there were just too many to cover in this column.

Everything from staying safe from railway lines; to how to avoid blowing oneself up with LPG. Really, if you can’t use some commonsense and look after yourself for a change, there really is no hope. Having said that, there’s bound to be someone who ignites into a ball of flames when hit by a train while barbecuing on the railway tracks.

More important news

The big news this week is the revelation that some Louboutins have been named after Blake Lively. Hold the front page, this is huge.

Our first reaction was awe. Second, what is a Louboutin? Thirdly, what is a Lively Blake?

The last Blake I heard of wasn’t too lively at all.

Turns out, I must have been in a cultural vacuum for the last few decades. Louboutin is an apparently famous footwear maker.

Funny, I don’t see his name on any of the Crocs. And Blake Lively is not a Texas line dancing team, but, apparently, a person. A famous actress-type woman.

Once I put all this together, however, I can see the enormity of the headline.

Blake has been named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people. Not sure how I missed that, probably only read the first 10 or so. Or maybe Time just forgot to send me that particular free copy.

So feeling as stupid as a nurse answering a phone, I set about to find out as much about Ms Lively and Louboutins so I could in turn, update my dedicated readers, who surely must also be enveloped in a cultural desert because NONE of you have ever written to me about Livelys or Louboutins so I can only assume you didn’t know either.

Turns out, she appeared in movies such as The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee and was in the teen drama series Gossip Girl – which explains her complete absence from any of my memory banks. I outright refuse to watch any movies with titles like that. Or with “of ” in the titles. Or anything involving a hobbit. Not that Lively has short hairy

AskMen.com rated her the most desirable woman of 2011. Which is odd, because they didn’t ask us. Mind you, we didn’t know her last year, so probably would have rated Susan Boyle higher.

And speaking of dearest Susan, I guess you’ll all be looking forward to her forthcoming Christmas album. I know I am. Intriguing combination, her and Donny Osmond. I guess he won’t be singing Puppy Love. Probably Who Let the Dogs Out. We did promise to bring you more hobbit harassment, and the festive season seems an appropriate time to sling a bit more abuse at these over-rated, over exposed and overly hairy annoyances.

So here are some ideas.

Hobbit recipes

Now that you trapped a whole bunch of pesky hobbits, thanks to the efficiency of the hobbit trap revealed to the world in a RR exclusive a couple of weeks ago, you’ll be wondering what to do with them.

Preparing hobbit is easy. After they’ve been cleaned and singed to remove the hair and hung by the ears for a few days, you’ll be ready to turn them into one of the fabulous dishes below. For many years, hobbits have been considered a second rate ingredient, often referred to as dog tucker or burley, due to the high oil content.

Add carrot, onion, stick celery, bay leaf, sprig thyme, sprig parsley, 6 peppercorns, 2 cloves, teaspoon salt, cold water and a partridge in a pear tree.

Add all ingredients to a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring slowly to the boil and gently simmer for three hours.

Remove some bits from the pukeko and the hobbit and chop finely across the grain. Add to pot, simmer for half an hour. Serve hot.

The great tsunami sirens debate continues with council staff rallying to bolster the case for electronic sirens before Christmas, following October’s successful test of the air raid sirens.

The successful demonstration of Tactical Tooling’s air raid sirens on October 18 was arranged by Papamoa Progressive Association, which is challenging Tauranga City Council’s apparent choice of the Meerkat electronic sirens on price and on ability to be heard.

PPA chairman Steve Morris began by challenging some of the council estimates presented in the agenda. The cost estimates are for what TCC staff say a Tactical Tooling air raid siren system will cost, but the Tactical Tooling figures were not compared directly with Meerkat figures for the electronic sirens.

Tactical Tooling say eight to 10 sirens along the coast are enough for everyone to hear. The city council says 18, and then on the advice of an acoustic engineer bumped it up to 25.

Meerkat will require 64 siren sites, with each pole costing $5000 totalling $320,000.

Each four speaker module costs $16,000. Council says up to four speakers will be required per pole, taking the speaker cost to $1 million.

In contrast Tactical Tooling sirens weigh 45kg and can go atop a $400 telephone pole. In addition the Meerkat system requires maintenance twice a year, which with a possible 450 sirens could take a while, and be an expensive ongoing cost.

Council staff say Tactical Tooling’s expanded system will cost $1.4 million, but Tactical Tooling director Geoff Williamson is confident he can halve any of the council estimates.

“Whatever figure they put

on it, I’m confident we could halve it or less,” says Geoff.

“Everything they said was quite wrong,” Christchurch has installed 22 Meerkat sirens at a cost of $500,000. The Christchurch system was going to be 70 sites.

Up until last week Christchurch City Council was talking with Tactical Tooling.

A GNS science study of tsunami warning systems for Waiheke quoted Meerkat sirens at $15,000 for a module of four, a total of 35 sites and a cost of $750,000 plus GST.

Jailed for bashing taxi driver

Two men who admitted robbing and bashing a Tauranga taxi driver in Matapihi have been sentenced to prison.

Joshua Stickland, 21, of the Avenues, appeared in Tauranga District Court last week and was sentenced to three years and nine months in jail for his role in the attack on September 26.

His co-accused, Tyson Duncan, 17, has been sentenced to two years and eight months jail.

Another 19-year-old man, who has interim name suppression, is also facing charges in relation to the attack.

The charges stem from an incident on Matapihi Road on September 26, where taxi driver Kamal Hossain went to pick up the group Upon arrival he was greeted by the three men, who asked him to take them to Tauranga.

When he got out of the car to talk to them, he was struck in the back of the head, causing him to fall to the ground.

Family fishers fined $95K

A Tauranga-based family-owned commercial fishing company has been fined $95,000 and had its boat confiscated after conviction for making false statements on fishing returns and fishing inside prohibited areas.

Fine O Muir Limited, which is registered to an Ohauiti address, was convicted on seven charges of making false statements on fishing returns in Wellington District Court and fined a total of $37,500.

The charges related to the company fishing in one management area and misreporting their catch as having been caught in another area.

Owner and operator Brett McGrath was convicted on one charge of making a false statement on a fishing return and fined $7500, and Jason McGrath was convicted on six charges of making a false statement on fishing returns and fined a total of $30,000.

The company was also convicted on a further 19 charges of fishing inside a prohibited area. The charges related to the company fishing inside prohibited fishing areas near Cape Runaway on 54 occasions during a six month period.

Teenager confesses robbery

A 16-year-old has admitted his role in the armed robbery of the Welcome Bay Foodmarket in August.

The teenager, who has automatic name suppression due to his age, pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated robbery when he appeared in Tauranga Youth Court.

The charge stems from the armed robbery of the Welcome Bay Foodmarket on August 23.

The 16-year-old and another co-offender, who police are still trying to locate, allegedly entered the store armed with pistols and demanded a sum of money from the store owner before fleeing on foot.

The teenager was arrested after police, including the armed offenders squad, executed a search warrant on a property in Welcome Bay in November.

The teenager is due back in court on January 29.

Naked mower defends charges

A Tauranga man is to defend charges of offensive behaviour in relation to him mowing his lawns naked.

Andrew Pointon, 47, is facing two charges of offensive behaviour which stem from allegations he was allegedly mowing his lawn naked on January 5 and March 31.

Pointon is due back in court on February 4.

Earlier this month, Pointon won his appeal over an offensive behaviour conviction he received while jogging naked in a forest.

The appeal was quashed by Justice Paul Heath last month.

Accident not stopping rider A 16-year-old motocross rider is determined not to let an accident stop her from getting back on her bike.

Chelsea Trueman, who has been riding for six years, had her first serious crash this year.

Competing at an event at Awakaponga near Matata earlier this year, Chelsea was completing a practice round before her girls-only competition began.

She came to grief at a jump after her initial look-lap.

“The landing went a little bit wrong,” says Chelsea.

“I hit something on the ground first and when I hit the jump, I was flicked sideways, bounced and went straight to the side. I put my leg out to hold myself up and the handlebars went down onto my kneecap.”

A painful mistake, Chelsea’s kneecap became completely dislocated from the force of the handlebars.

Another racer quickly came to her aid, lifting the bike off her before The Lakes Event Medic Service was on the scene.

With no blood flow to her foot, the medic had to straighten her kneecap to allow the blood to flow again.

Remembering the pain, Chelsea drew in her breath.

“Apparently I was screaming the whole time, but I don’t remember that. Nothing I was given helped, it was so sore.”

Worried about the possible lack of blood flow, the ambulance team requested the TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter be dispatched.

Chelsea says having caring people by

her side made her feel better while she was being flown to hospital.

She soon learnt she had broken every ligament in her knee, resulting in an entire knee reconstruction and eight days in hospital.

Hunt for killer continuing Six months after the investigation into the murder of Paeroa man Jordan Voudouris was launched, police say they remain committed to catching the businessman’s killer.

Investigating officers believe the public still holds the key to solving the case.

Officer in charge of Operation Olive, detective senior sergeant Mike Whitehead, says Jordan’s body was found outside the rear of his Paeroa pizza store, Mykono’s Pizza and Pasta, on the morning of June 18.

“As outlined from the start, this case is proving to be a lengthy investigation into who murdered the well-respected local businessman.

“We believe Jordan was shot sometime between 1.30am and 4.30am on the morning Monday, June 18, but the offender(s) activity either side of this

time remains a focus of our enquiry.”

Mike says that someone, somewhere has information that for a variety of reasons they haven’t relayed to police.

“What we want to say to that person and, in fact, everyone else out there, is that as you sit down to enjoy Christmas dinner with your family to remember Jordan had a family of his own, a family who would dearly love some closure to this tragedy.”

Mike says the focus of the 20-strong investigation team remains the same as when we began this case six months ago, to identify those responsible and bring them before the courts.

Alcohol and cars not a good cocktail Western Bay of Plenty Police will have drunk drivers on their radar as they reach the halfway point of Operation Profile.

Operation Profile was launched at the begin-

ning of November with the aim of reducing the number of people caught drinking and driving.

When this edition of The Weekend Sun went to print, 107 intoxicated drivers had been caught

since the start of the operation.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager, senior sergeant Ian Campion says the operation will run until the middle of February.

“We have signs posted around the town which are updated every fortnight to show how many people have been caught during the operation.”

He says people need to think before they drink and drive.

“There are lots of events and celebrations happening, which is great. But people need to have a contingency plan in place, like a sober driver.”

Operation Profile is a campaign launched by police aimed at targeting drink drivers during the summer period.

The legal adult limit of alcohol allowed when driving is 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

Beach grand slam SWIMWEAR FACTORY CLEARANCE After a mixed season on the sand, Tauranga’s top beach volleyball players are hoping to end the year on a high note with a hometown advantage.

Among those determined to see play go their way is Sam O’Dea, who after years of partnering with brother Ben is joining forces with older brother Edwin for the annual Mauao Grand Slam on Mount Main Beach today.

Sam says the temporary partnership with former full-time player Edwin, now the Bay of Plenty volleyball promotion officer, has been going well – but his long-term focus is on a new permanent pairing with seasoned local player Kirk Pitman.

Kirk’s long-time partner Jason Lochhead will link up with Ben, in a reshuffle expected to benefit everyone.

“Ben and I played some really good volleyball – we had some great games but failing to qualify (for the Olympics) was disappointing,” says Sam. Despite technically playing well, Sam says the brothers’ failure to win critical games on the international circuit had prompted them to team up with the senior players to benefit from their experience.

Beyond Sam’s immediate goal to play his best during summer, he says both pairs’ main goal for 2013 is to compete at the world championships in Poland.

Beyond that, he is vague on details – but expects to link up with English-based Kirk for the European tournament. Ben, who is currently working in Melbourne, will train with Jason in Los Angeles.

Griffen says the Asian games were a “learning experience” with their best result a ninth out of 24. The Grand Slam, which is expected to attract 40 of the country’s top pairs, will run from 9am with the finals about 4pm.

New Year festivities – 100 years on In 1913 a group of Waihi gold miners started a children’s sports event on the beach to celebrate the first day of the New Year – now 100 years on, the Waihi Beach New Year’s Day Children’s Beach Sports is tradition.

Marine Parade between Adams Avenue and Pacific Avenue will be closed overnight from 8pm-6am from December 26, 2012 until January 6, 2013.

The Mount peninsula north of Banks and Salisbury Avenues is closed to vehicles from 2pm on New Year’s Eve until 8am on New Year’s Day.

Vehicle passes

If you are staying within the road closure zone and don’t already have a vehicle pass, head to the Beach Base at Mount Drury with proof of a Mt Maunganui address or accommodation to get one.

From 2pm on New Year’s Eve a vehicle pass-issuing station will be set up at the Park n Ride on Kawaka St.

Buses

Since most people won’t be able to drive into the Mount on New Year’s Eve, why not take a bus straight into the event zone?

Free Park n Ride

Take the easy route to the Mount on New Year’s Eve – use the NYE Park n Ride at Kawaka St and take a free bus into the event zone.

Park n Ride runs from 11am on New Year’s Eve until 2am on New Year’s Day. Security will be on-site to monitor parked cars.

$15 bus service

Bayline Coaches runs a $15 bus service on New Year’s Eve with pick-up locations around the city.

Organiser Mike Hickey, a committee member for Waihi Beach Lifesaving Club which has run the event since 1935, says in the earlier years children were given a can of milk and winners of each race were offered an ice cream for one penny each. They were also given the chance to ride on the three donkeys – Milly, Molly and Mandy.

Savings cost council Stirring up and merging the city’s Council Controlled Organisations is going to cost ratepayers $225,000, plus increased annual directors’ fees.

Directors of the city’s merged Tauranga City Aquatics Ltd and Tauranga City Venues Ltd will be paid $28,000-$32,000 a year and the chairman up to $60,000, Tauranga City councillors decided last week.

The one-off $225,000 is to cover expected merger costs, including $100,000 for redundancies, with the rest for legal advice, tax advice, and ‘other’ expenses.

The total amount currently paid to CCO directors is $76,000, which is low because city councillors David Stewart, Wayne Moultrie and Larry Baldock are TCAL directors, who take no fees.

Business services group manager Dean Riley believes fewer than than five people may be made redundant from the merger. The merged company will have $150 million in ratepayers’ assets, including TECT Arena, Baypark and the city pools. It will have a staff of more than 200 and a combined turnover of more than $23 million. Most of the income, $14 million, is from rates contributions for public good services. $9 million is from user fees. The new company structure is expected to result in $1.8 million savings for ratepayers within three years, says chief executive officer Leigh Auton.

Councillors say they want a more fiscally literate directorate to manage the leisure company on a properly commercial basis, and fees set at a market rate.

Aaradhna has recently re-entered the music scene with the release of her second album ‘Treble & Reverb’ and hit song ‘Wake Up’.

Following her first album in 2006, she quit the music scene in 2007.

“I just stayed at my mum and dad’s house doing nothing but eating, drinking, just being a depressed couch potato until mid-2008, when I went to Romania with my partner, who was playing basketball over there.

“I had a lot of time on my hands. I was still trying to find out what I really wanted to do in life.”

It wasn’t until she posted clips on YouTube that Aaradhna realised she still had a following, and she decided to make a comeback.

Seeking inspiration from Amy Winehouse, her first single ‘Wake Up’ is a message to herself to make the most of life. She says this new, honest approach makes her music stronger.

“It helps me feel better when I write a song about what’s going on in my life and I get to vent in the best way possible through music.

A young Simon’s summers Growing up in Auckland, a young Simon Bridges looked forward to spending his summer holidays watching Star Wars, making friends with garden gnomes and exploring the beach at his grandfather’s home in Waihi.

Every year, the Bridges family spent the Christmas break at Robin Baxter’s red brick house, where fiveyear-old Simon formed his strong connection with the western Bay of Plenty.

“Looking back, what amazes me is that I used to wander around bare foot everywhere without any parental supervision. We were out every day, all day, probably without much sunblock on.

“Back then there was small movie theatre at the end of the beach, and I saw a heap of movies there.

“I think I saw all the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies.”

The youngest of six, Simon spent a lot of time with his brother Mark.

“We’d often go to Orokau Bay. We had to go up some pretty scary paths; my dad wouldn’t go because he was scared of heights.”

When he wasn’t with Mark, Simon made his own fun.

“I remember his next-door neighbour had a really smelly pug dog.

“We spent a bit of time with him and also, on the other side, there was a garden gnome, but it was a rabbit, which I used to always go and visit.

“I think I gave him a name and a bit of a back story. I think I was quite into bunnies as a result of ‘Watership Down’.” Simon’s grandfather sold the house shortly before passing away. Simon says he has driven past and checked it out, and visits the beach with his wife Natalie and their son Emlyn.

The website of the Tauranga Region Kindergartens states it “is a professional non-profit community-based service, providing exemplary and innovative early childhood education and whanau services”. Like kindergartens, early childhood centres aim to provide quality education and care for children. So why are there such long waiting lists for kindergartens, when there is an abundance of different childcare options available? Kindergarten parents I have spoken to say it comes down to cost; kindy is free, and it prepares their child for school.

With the 20 Free ECE initiative, all children aged over three are eligible for 20 hours free early childhood education.These childcare centres are offering the same number of free hours as kindergartens. Like early childhood centres, kindergartens charge a fee for children who do not fit the criteria for this.

Like kindergartens, early childhood centres also aim to prepare children for school. At The Village, for example, the centre is divided into three areas and we have our own preschool with a specialist programme called Cool for School, giving children necessary skills for a smooth transition to school. For working parents, childcare is a more flexible option. Kindergarten is part-time preschool education while childcare centres are open for longer hours, are not strictly sessional, and most are open through the holidays.

Presents put aside at Christmas Bay of Plenty residents were shopping on a budget this Christmas with some forgetting about presents completely, according to recent national Christmas statistics.

The AMP Capital Shopping Centres annual poll shows Tauranga residents were under financial pressure this year, with more than 50 per cent of shoppers approaching Christmas on a budget.

AMPCSC, which owns Bayfair Shopping Centre, asked 123 Tauranga residents a broad range of questions about their shopping patterns, with the survey uncovering a surprising new budget trend.

In 2011, the survey indicated 39 per cent of Tauranga residents were likely to overspend and 34 per cent said their bank manager would approve of

their Christmas shopping list. This year, 46 per cent say money was their number one Christmas worry and only 11 per cent say their bank manager would approve of their Christmas list.

A little more than 40 per cent of those surveyed say they were feeling a ‘bit pinched’ financially this year, with 29 per cent buying less expensive gifts than last year and 20 per cent not buying gifts at all.

A quarter of interviewees say they intended to buy ‘fewer but better’ presents.

Ahead of Christmas, The Weekend Sun asked readers if they were using cash to purchase Christmas presents.

Just two people out of 23 said yes.

Four people said they used both, with one person saying they didn’t do Christmas shopping except for food.

Free internet in summer hot spots Don’t fork out money for data on your phone this summer, Telecom has installed more than 100 free WiFi hotspots across the country, including popular spots in the Bay of Plenty.

The free service began on December 18 and will remain in place throughout summer.

The company is activating the service through existing Telecom telephone boxes in the selected regions, including Auckland, Northland, the Coromandel and the Bay,

and in some cases by building WiFi transmission into existing infrastructure – such as surf clubs and local shops.

Users will initially be taken through a short online registration process before their device automatically connects to the service each time thereafter.

Zucchini a plenty, so make slice The garden is pumping this time of year and the courgettes are taking over as usual, with bright yellow flowers appearing on a daily basis.

These flowers make a great burst of colour simply shredded last minute into a salad. They can also be steamed whole with a rice or other savoury filling. In the past, I have filled the flowers with a ricotta, lemon and herb mixture and deep-

fried them in tempura batter.

The abundance of zucchini produced from one plant in your garden means ample supply – why I planted three I will never know.

Besides stir fries and slicing into ribbons for salads, there are other options to use the humble courgette. For this week we will use them in a slice.

Throughout the years I have given people this slice without telling them what it contained – not one person guessed. So it’s one way to disguise this vegetable that children would

Add butter a little at a time. Add enough beaten egg to form a mass then press to 2-3mm depth – straight into a suitable large oven proof tray lined with greaseproof paper.

Bake at 180c for 5-7 minutes until just firm enough to take the moisture of the topping.

Resident reunited with best friend Pensioner Valerie Good’s story is one with a happy ending – but it was not without its sleepless nights.

The Greerton resident’s beloved dog Lulu went missing last month, sending Valerie into a frenzy to try and find her pooch.

Three-year-old Lulu’s lead came loose during a walk in Greerton on November 22. The Sydney silky ran though the police station, dodging grasping hands, and ran out a side door.

Valerie contacted the council, the SPCA, police and local vets, as well as putting ads on the radio and in The Weekend Sun. But it was Lulu’s microchip that led to her discovery – in Rotorua about three weeks later.

“I went to my vet in Welcome Bay, paid $20 and had her microchip number put on the national database,” says Valerie.

On Thursday, she received a call saying a dog with Lulu’s registration had been found in Rotorua.

“She was in Rotorua renamed Pippy, but she had the wrong date of birth.”

But it wasn’t as simple as going to pick her up.

It was almost another week, in which time Valerie had to visit her solicitor and lay an official charge with police, before she saw Lulu again.

It was a long wait, but last Tuesday the pair was reunited.

“The moment he handed Lulu to me she licked me all over the face.

“She stank like anything. She had a shower and she’s much happier. She’s lost weight like I’ve lost weight, with the stress out of it all.”

Valerie hopes her story will act as a warning to dog owners to make sure their dogs are secure on the lead, and to get them microchipped.

“It’s a pure accident she got off; I always have her on a lead.

“I’ve got friends who I look after their dogs and they’re rushing off to get them microchipped.”

Christmas respite – looking after yourself In Home Instead we talk about ‘Kathy’.

‘Kathy’ is a woman, somewhere between 45 and 65, juggling her immediate family – husband and children (sometimes grandchildren), with wider family commitments such as parental needs while often she has a job as well. Can you get that ‘Kathy’ is feeling a little stretched?

The majority of enquiries we receive come from ‘Kathy’ – usually when she is close to breaking point, though she is getting smarter and researching the options available to her in advance in order to be somewhat ready should the need arise.

Times like Christmas are when ‘Kathys’ feels particularly stretched and are often filled with guilt associated with not

being able to do everything for everyone they want. It is important to all the ‘Kathys’ out there to look after themselves (easier said than done) but if you are a ‘Kathy’, please make sure you have got the support of others around you and start looking at options for your loved ones before the need arises. Athletes make Australian Olympic squad Two Tauranga athletes have been selected as part of a 180strong squad of top young New Zealand athletes to take part in the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival.

Paddlers Anna Higgins and Callum Gilbert will represent the country, competing against top junior athletes from 24 nations.

Cole O’Connor Stratton, who won the Secondary School Sportsman of the Year award for 2012 at the recent BOP Sports Awards, was selected for the team, but a recent injury means he is unable to compete in the two classes he was selected for, K1 and C1M. This created the opportunity for fellow paddler Callum to join the team.

Callum, who has just finished Year 12 at Tauranga Boys’ College, has embraced the opportunity to compete at this level on the Sydney 2000 Olympic course in

Penrith. Anna, a Tauranga Girls’ College student, who won the top female paddler trophy at this year’s NZ Secondary Schools’ championships, was recently awarded a BayTrust scholarship as well as a supreme sports award at her school sports prizegiving.

The Australian Youth Olympic Festival offers a unique opportunity for aspiring Olympians to compete in an environment similar to the Olympic Games.

With top New Zealand athlete, Lisa Carrington (K1-200 gold, London 2012), Blair Tuke and Peter Burling (sailing 49er, silver, London 2012) beginning their careers at the AYOF, the athletes named will benefit from the lessons learnt at earlier editions of the Olympic Festival.

The festival was initiated by the Australian Olympic Committee following the success of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The inaugural festival was in January 2001 and takes place every four years, alternating with the IOC-run Youth Olympic Games.

Karl says it has been Tauranga Squash Club’s most successful club in 40 years, with its two national team titles and junior members also winning the national secondary schools titles for Tauranga Boys’ College.

Another two squash courts should be installed in the centre by the start of the next official season in April.

Inspirational road to success

To live like an everyday ‘Joe blog’ is all athlete Fraser Sharp wants.

The 36-year-old is competing in his second Port of Tauranga Half Ironman next week following a devastating cycling accident in April, 1993.

Fraser, 16 at the time, suffered severe injuries including a broken fibula and tibia, skull fractures, and irreparable damage to the frontal lobe of his brain. He was in a coma for 30 days.

Having re-learned how to walk and talk, Fraser finished his studies at Waikato Polytechnic and in Greymouth before moving to France in 1999 to work as part of a maintenance crew on super yachts.

In 2008, his love for cycling was rekindled after purchasing a second-hand bike and watching good friend Hayden Roulston compete in the Tour de France. He competed in his first Ironman last year.

“My Australian boss challenged me to complete the 2013 Nice Ironman and I started planning straight away.”

On January 5, Fraser will swim 11km, run 50km and cycle for 12 hours to show people anything can be achieved, no matter the situation.

“I just want to be an everyday Joe blog. I just want to promote anything is possible from where I’ve come from. It’s been 19 years, but to get out there and do an Ironman is no easy feat.”

Tauranga harbour master Jennifer Roberts says increased visitors to the Bay during summer mean people need to take extra care on, and near, the water.

“We do get large numbers of people coming to enjoy our beautiful harbour over the Christmas break, but unfortunately not all of those people are aware of the water safety rules.

“Harbour masters and volunteer wardens will be doing their best to keep people safe, but I encourage everyone to make sure they know the water rules and to be that extra bit conscious of safety while out on the water this summer.

“The Bay is a great place, so let’s keep it fun, by making sure everyone is safe.”

The water rules: • You must be at least 15 years old to drive a pow ered vessel capable of travelling faster than 10 knots, including jet skis.

• You must not go faster than five knots: - Within 50 metres of another vessel or person in the water.

Baypark’s super saloon queen When mild-mannered university student Kristin Vermeulen, 20, tells people she’s a super saloon driver there are always a few stunned looks.

“People are really surprised that I do it, but there’s never been a problem – never any hassles or issues with me being a girl. And on the track they treat me as one of the boys.”

At 11 she got the bug for racing mini stocks, following in the footsteps of her father keen motorsports enthusiast and mechanic Willie Vermeulen who has limited his racing to black tracks.

“I just really enjoy it. It’s a cool thing that we do all together as a family – it something we love to do together.”

After five years racing in mini-stocks – starting on the tracks of Waharoa and Waihi Beach – Kristin went on become the overall mini-stocks winner in her final season, before taking “quite a big step up” to super saloons.

After learning the ropes in her first few seasons, Kristin had her best results ever last year, finishing third in the North Island series. When The Bay Driver caught up with her before Christmas she was happy with her form after progressing from 10th to sixth place overall in the SSCAR Series, but she was not resting on her laurels.

In this, her fifth season racing super saloons, she is determined to do even better. “My goal is to move up a placing if I could, and just to get up there again and to keep consistent. I want to work my way up and be the best.”In fact Kristin quite likes the idea of racing

in Australia or the US, but knows there is a long way to go to and a lot more track time before that’s an option. In the meantime she has a busy season of racing ahead before returning to Waikato University to complete her honours year and take up a part-time job with the university as student ambassador, a role she hopes will pave the way for her dream job as a student counsellor. But racing is top priority over the coming

month with another race at Baypark Speedway on Saturday (29th), before heading off with her 412 Corvette to Auckland for the third round of the SSCAR Series – the North Island super saloon series that travels around seven different track meetings. In early January she heads to Wellington for the North Island Championships before returning for more Baypark meetings.

Model A Ford, ‘Cult Surf Car’ Bob Tulloch, who has spent more time behind the lens of a camera than behind the wheel of a car, first developed his interest in photography taking surfing photos, his camera accompanying him in his 1929 Model A Ford.

“I bought the car in 1963 when I was about 18,” he recalls. “We were living in Christchurch at the time and I got it for $200 from a neighbour. It was an old car but this model had a reputation for reliability.”

The New Zealand Transport Agency is urging Bay of Plenty teens to be careful on the roads as many embark on long journeys to attend summer festivals.

Summer events including Coromandel Gold in Whitianga and Rhythm and Vines in Gisborne are among popular New Year destinations for local teens.

To help parents ensure their teens’ safety on the roads, NZTA is providing advice and free tools - www.safeteendriver.co.nz NZTA chief executive Geoff Dangerfield says the website encourages parents to work with their teens to identify hazards they may encounter and what to do.

“Driving to a festival can be a daunting task for a teen who hasn’t yet experienced narrow, winding roads, road works, sunstrike, holiday-makers towing boats, heavy traffic and fatigue.”

New studies for gout and breast cancer New clinical studies are taking place at Tauranga Hospital as new treatments are trialed for illnesses such as gout and breast cancer.

Associate professor Peter Gilling and research manager Rana Reuther established the Clinical Trials Unit three years ago within the Bay of Plenty District Health Board.

The unit conducts research studies with patients to find out if treatments used in health care are safe and work effectively, or if they have side effects.

“No matter how promising a new drug or treatment may appear during tests in a laboratory, it must go through clinical trials so that its benefits and risks can truly be known,” says Peter.

The unit, which recently amalgamated with the Bay of Plenty Medical Research Trust, has seen much growth in the past year, employing 11 staff and co-ordinating more than 30 different trials.

“We have studies going across all medical specialties - everything from oncology and respiratory to infectious diseases and cardiology,” says acting research manager Cherie Mason.

“We use the trials to look at the best way to prevent, diagnose or treat illnesses and help people control their symptoms.”

Cherie says participating in the research studies allows patients to access cuttingedge medical treatment otherwise not available in New Zealand, as well as providing them with the opportunity for regular specialist review and expert nursing care.

She says the BOPDHB also benefits from the trials, frequently incurring huge cost savings by being able to provide treatment to participants at no cost to the DHB. “We are currently running a study assessing Her2-Positive Breast Cancer, which we expect to enrol up to 20 participants.

“This particular study will save the DHB $100,000 per patient in medical costs alone.”

All clinical trials take place at the Bay of Plenty Clinical School on Tauranga Hospital grounds, with participants usually attending monthly appointments on site.

Cherie says the Clinical Trials Unit is looking for participants to take place in a new study on gout.

“Gout can be an extremely debilitating illness, which is often mismanaged or under-treated in the community.

“This trial gives participants the opportunity to be regularly reviewed by a consultant rheumatologist whilst receiving a new medication for gout over a two-year period.”

Participants will be reimbursed for their time and travel expenses.

On pondering what to write for this column, my mind keeps going back to a number of sports psychology sessions that I have sat in on with my athletes during the last few months. The discussions were around mindfulness. I thought how relevant the skills were for the general population. If we all practiced a bit of mindfulness, I think life would be quite a bit easier. I know it works for athletes, I can’t see why it wouldn’t work for you and me.

Sports example: a hockey player trying to earn a spot in a representative team. When he makes his first mistake in a game, he makes another, then another and another until his game completely falls apart.

The sport psychologist determines that what is happening is when the player makes that first mistake, he automatically thinks he’s blown his chance of ever making the representative

team – and he berates himself and worries about the consequences of his mistake. Then he makes another mistake (because he is focused on worrying instead of playing the game) and he further berates himself and assumes that his chances of selection are even more dismal. The problem snowballs. Solution?

Do what you are doing now, don’t think about what is ‘not’ happening. The psychologist taught this athlete to spin his stick in his hand if he made a mistake.

The action of spinning the stick made him focus on what was happening ‘now’ and stopped the thoughts that took his focus away from the game.

Do you worry about things that have not happened yet and might never happen at all?

Stress and anxiety build up over time in this way. You can only control what is happening right now.

Mindfulness is the practice of first identifying that your thoughts are not focussed on the task at hand, then you make a conscious decision to return to what’s happening now. I am sure this is easier said than done! The concept of mindfulness might be something to ponder over the break – a way of reducing stress and anxiety?

Diving into a summer beauty routine Ladies, it’s time to kick your summer beauty routine into gear before you find yourself in next year.

Here are a few tips for simplifying your make-up bag while on holiday and keeping your body in top shape.

Deep conditioning is extremely important for your hair in summer, especially if you’re doing a lot of swimming.

The surf, sand and sun can do a lot of damage.

If you’re swimming lengths at the local pools, add some leave-in conditioner to your hair before you put on your swim cap. It’ll help stop

the damage from the chlorine. Just like your hair, your skin can become dehydrated in the summer.

Drink eight glasses of water per day, exfoliate and moisturise after bathing to lock in the moisture.

Reduce the number of products you’re carrying around by using multiuse products.

Good makeup removal wipes work as a cleanser, toner and moisturiser.

All-purpose balm can be used on lips, cheeks and eyelids for shine and rubbed onto dry skin on heels and elbows.

Mist toner in a bottle is a great idea for hot days. You can spritz it on your face and body to cool off, and if you add a

little essential oil it’ll keep you smelling fabulous and fresh too.

Mascara is not so important that you need to risk panda eyes at the beach.

Dust off your eyelash curler and get your eyes to pop without glops of black running down your cheeks.

If you really want darker lashes, getting them tinted will ensure colour without the mess.

Tinted moisturiser doubles as a moisturiser and foundation. This is a great idea for summer. Foundation is a little unpredictable on the beach, and this way, you don’t have to go bare.

Holidays are the perfect time to reflect on your health. A good way to review your health is to think of your body systems and give each a grade out of 10, with a 10 being fantastic, a 0 terrible; then a final grade out of 10.

Consider your skin, hair and nails, then your muscles and skeleton, including your joints. Next check your heart and general circulation, followed by your nervous and respiratory system, including you breathing and sinuses.

Think of your immunity, including how often you are unwell and how well you recover.

We generally notice our digestion and elimination but consider any problem affecting your mouth, oesophagus, stomach, intestines including bowel habits, then review your urinary and reproductive and hormonal systems. Finally rate your overall energy and wellbeing with a final health score out of ten.

If you are less than 8/10 you should take some active steps, starting with a full check-up with your GP. The next step is to get a full nutritional assessment that can help you set and achieve goals with a view of lifting your health score to where you would like it to be. In most cases it is a matter of fine-tuning with food choices appropriate for your health issues, targeted supplementation and lifestyle choices.

For example, most diseases have an inflammatory component. If you have any disease with the suffix ‘itis’ then it is an inflammatory disease. Unwanted inflammation is often caused or worsened by diet.

But remember, heavy facial moisturisers aren’t necessary during summer because we’re not exposed to the harsh conditions of winter. Use it only when necessary.

Your nails also feel the brunt of the hotter months, and chlorine and surf do them no favours. Add a nail protectant under your nail polish or just go sheer and natural with a strengthening top coat.

Prevention is the key in summer.

Keeping decks and balconies safe during summer Many Bay of Plenty residents will be taking advantage of the warm summer weather by enjoying barbecues and gatherings on their decks or balconies.

Decks and balconies run the risk of rotting over time as water leaks into them, leading to underlying structure decay.

In extreme cases this can cause decks to collapse, especially if the deck or balcony is reinforced by untreated kiln-dried timber.

Where water pools on the surface decks and balconies also require maintenance to make sure there is adequate drainage.

Here are some helpful hints for ensuring your deck or balcony is safe this summer.

If the property has monolithic cladding, check it to make sure the coating system is in good

condition and water can’t access the timber framing.

If you’re worried, get a building surveyor to check for leaks or damage invisible to the untrained eye.

If it is impossible for someone to fall more than one metre off the deck or balcony, building consent is not required for upgrades.

But they all must be in accordance with the Building Code for safety reasons.

Safety checklist:

• Is water pooling on the deck’s surface?

• Are there holes present in the

waterproof surfacing?

• Does the deck meet the build ing doorway anywhere with out a step?

• Is the balustrade covered with light weight materials with a plaster finish?

Signs to watch out for:

• Decks or balconies that move when walked on.

• Damp spots or stains where the deck meets the building.

• Wobbly balustrades • Cracks near joints and corners

Reflecting on the year’s building trends When building a new home, Tauranga women were most concerned with the layout and design of their kitchen this year, according to Tauranga company Generation Homes.

This is one of many trends that emerged during the building of new homes in the Bay this year.

Generation Homes CEO Kevin Atkinson says a four-bedroom, 200sqm home, with two bathrooms and two living areas, was number one on the ‘wish list’ of people building a home this year.

But budget constraints faced by many families meant three-bedroom homes were most popular.

“The gap between the numbers of three-bedroom houses built, compared with four bedrooms, is definitely closing, regardless of the housing affordability crisis.”

In 2012, 48 per cent of the company’s customers built four-bedroom properties, while 49 per cent built three-bedroom homes. Just three per cent built five-bedroom houses.

“It appears gone are the days when people want a stock-standard three-bedroom, one-bathroom home.

Kevin says many families are choosing to sacrifice the latest technology projects and expensive furnishings in favour of more bedrooms and bathrooms.

home and also like the added benefit of more space for a games room, study or entertainment room.”

Tauranga director David Mansel says this year women were most concerned with the kitchen layout, choice of appliances and colour scheme when building a home.

“This year there was a definite steer towards more kitchen bench-top space and the added feature of soft-close kitchen drawers.”

As the year draws to a close, dark colours inside the home are on the way out.

Home stylist Jennifer King says the end of 2012 means goodbye to the dark tones of greys and beiges that have been predominant over the last few years.

Next year is expected to swing back to whites, creams and bright colours.

“We are definitely starting to see bright colours making a comeback, particularly citrus – green, orange and aqua. When building or renovating, for many home owners it is important for the home to be marketable while still incorporating the latest trends. Neutral tones have a wide appeal and are still most popular for wall colouring, but adding a burst of colour through accessories like cushions, vases and throws can keep a house on trend without turning potential buyers away,” she says.

Other trends in 2012 included walk-in tiled showers, wall-hung vanities, triple-car garages and a strong focus on outdoor entertainment areas.

A recent meeting of the Bay of Plenty Regional transport committee received a report card on key transport trends and performance against targets in the region This is a snapshot: Fatalities and serious injuries on our roads decreased in 2011.

Speed contributed to 28 per cent and alcohol to 26 per cent of all

deaths and serious injuries.

There has been little increase in vehicle numbers since 2007 and fuel consumption has decreased.

Road congestion in Tauranga increased slightly.

The distance Tauranga residents travelled in a single-occupancy vehicle was up 12 per cent.

The distance travelled on our roads increased three per cent Increase in share of trips on foot, cycling, or on public transport.

Te Puke and Tauranga have been in focus as they deal with the results of negotiations for their treaty settlements.

Tapuika iwi based around Te Puke have signed their Deed of Settlement agreement which sets out a long-awaited apology by the Crown and provides for final settlement of all claims including an agreed historical account, cultural, financial and commercial redress.

At the same time as the Tapuika signing, Tauranga Moana iwi have just completed a process of voting to approve the Tauranga Moana Iwi Collective Deed.

Voting closed on December 12 and the results are now up online.

I have stated publically that I do not much like the treaty negotiation process. In most deals they can be the cause for splits in and between iwi with shared interest but in the end, no settlements ever come close to losses.

Bain claim on the wane

Recent assessments by the media on the Bain murder compensation claim are way off target. There is no legal or moral obligation on the NZ Government to pay any compensation because David Bain does not meet the Cabinet rules for compensation to be considered, never appeared to and nor are there extraordinary circumstances in this case.

Innocence on balance of probabilities is the test. Mr Bain must prove that he is likely to be innocent and all forensic evidence it seems to favour the Crown.

Mr Bain did not see fit to give evidence at the 2009 Retrial so what did he have to be afraid of? Just one telling snippet, if Robin Bain actually shot himself, why didn’t the rifle and silencer have a single finger print on them belonging to him?

It really takes little nous to draw a conclusion. A compensation payout is not in the interests of justice nor are there any grounds to entertain a compensation claim despite what Mr Binnie’s reports might postulate.

No wonder Cabinet are agonizing over it and good on them for having the guts to get a second legal opinion in NZ. MS Senior, Mt Maunganui.

Call me a sceptic...

But I simple do not believe that the proposed 3 cents per litre per year collected as extra petrol tax will be used on the roads.

Huge roading projects were successfully carried out in NZ when petrol was nearly free compared to today’s prices. One wonders has the minister responsible the guts to release all the figures on tax collected on all registrations of all vehicles and trailers and tax and GST on the petrol tax plus the full figures spent on roading in NZ. I suspect they collect enough from registration fees alone to construct a new motorway every year and spend the petrol tax elsewhere.

I am sure most NZrs do not believe that all roading tax from all sources is spent on roading. The PM or whoever has only just said that the extra tax collected on petrol will see us in surplus in a couple of year’s time. Come on Mr Key tell us the truth.

If the extra tax collected on petrol is going to see us in surplus by 2014 then surely there is enough to build the roads.

TCC melting moments

Strange that all the TCC financial carnage is now being leaked out but this is only because TCC are at the end of their fiscal tether. The Bell Road farmland purchase in 2006 is a prime example of the problems facing Council.

Even the TCC ‘gnomes of Zurich’ must be able to see the clear writing on the wall and with capital debt ratio running at around 275% to annual rating and other income they must be scared witless of the consequences to be forced to go down this confession purging track with the next step of course likely to be the appointment of a Local Government Commissioner to run the show if things don’t improve. What is posted on Sunlive today about CCO mergers is unbelievable. Savings will be zilch more likely bigger losses... It is clear most Council financial operations are effectively cost plus mindsets.

TCC do a rough annual budget then the inevitable overspending is simply capitalised or added to the following year’s rates.

Fantastic Not bad at all Dreadful

MOONRISE KINGDOM Dir: Wes Anderson - Starring: Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray The films of Wes Anderson are, for some people, an acquired taste. Like the Cohen brothers, his love of a stylised world tends to deter those who prefer their drama more naturalistic. His key films – Rushmore, The Royal Tennenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou – share a similar sensibility, mixing the wilfully naïve with a rigorous art design and subtle nostalgia for lost youth.

Moonrise Kingdom is a live action return after an animated detour with The Fantastic Mr Fox and is possibly his most Wes Anderson-like film to date. I found it a joy from start to finish.

Set in a nostalgic 1965 it takes place on the fictional New Penzance Island, a New England locale

Totally wonderful.

wouldn’t touch with a pole of the ten foot variety then this ultra-violent, quip-happy slice of action cheese ain’t going to change your mind. Simon (Con Air) West directs with gusto and it’s hard to deny the guilty pleasure of watching the biggest ever collection of multi-generational action men doing what they do best. The plot? Mercenaries, missions (“What’s the plan?” “We find him, we track him, we kill him.”), macho stuff. What did you expect?

The three Bourne films starring Matt Damon were very clever stuff. They succeeded because the bone-crunching action was matched by equally complex and well-thought-out plots.

The Bourne Legacy is very nicely made. But, if you compare it to the previous outings, it is clearly running on empty. Jeremy Renner makes for a terrific non-Bourne Bourne but basically what we’re looking at is a (simpler) version of the first film with a few tweaks. It’s a very enjoyable thriller but, bottom line, it’s yet another attempt to stretch a franchise beyond its sell-by date.

Based on a book by yet another Scandinavian crime writer (Jens Lapidus), Easy Money tells the stories of three characters:

Jorge, an Albanian crim seen escaping from prison as the film starts; Mrado, a Serbian gangster; and JW, a business student pretending to be rich so he can mix with the social elite. His greed and ambition land him way out of his depth and smack in the middle of a violent world of drug smuggling and money laundering. Shot in a handheld style very different from previous Swedish offerings this is rather brilliant stuff, superbly directed and edited, managing to give real complexity to the characters while telling an engrossing story. Top class. is a film with one Iron Sky idea, but it’s a very good one. It must have been the shortest and easiest pitch ever: “Nazis on the moon!” Movies have had fun with the moon landing.

Doctor Manhattan and the Decepticons were both up there, this time it’s a massive Nazi base, its inhabitants living in a glorious fantasy world of the neverending Reich. The film looks fantastic, a testament to art direction on a limited budget. Sadly there aren’t really enough jokes to go round (the Sarah Palin imitation quickly palls) and there’s not really much of a story. But it looks great and slips by painlessly.

The cast (including Harvey Keitel, Frances McDormand, Bob Balaban, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman) is great, the detail amazing, the film in-jokes delightful (the Shawshank Redemption gag is very funny), there’s a cool quirky soundtrack, and the film has real heart.

Some films – like their stars – are pretty much bulletproof. Nothing I say about The Expendables 2 makes any difference: if you liked the first one you’ll like this; if it’s the sort of thing you

Toast to Bruce – a life on song It’s the end of another year so it must be time for a drink.

That’s not the sort of sentiment that seems especially popular these days. But every day is cocktail day here at the Watusi Country Club so I think it only right to offer a recipe for summer fun. It’ll be at the end so just skip the next five hundred words if you’re feeling particularly thirsty.

Because, being the last column of the 2012 I guess it is vaguely traditional to look back at the year and pick the good and bad bits. Hmmm...

Let’s skip that. Instead I’d like to write a little about a dear friend of mine who had a long association with

Tauranga and who died in November after a struggle with cancer.

His name was Bruce Morley. He was a drummer, a writer, a radio programmer, a New Zealand music lobbyist, a tennis player, a historian, and a passionate advocate for the genius of Bix Beiderbecke.

He lived here for a couple of years in the late eighties but as far back as 1964 he led the Bruce Morley Sextet at the only the second Tauranga Jazz Festival.

I don’t really want to get into a fullscale biography of Bruce, because that would probably take the rest of the column. But let’s indulge a little...

Bruce drummed with a staggering and eclectic range of people. Check this lot out: Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, Spike Milligan, Harry Secombe, Matt Monro, Johnny Tillotson, Rolf Harris, Marty Feldman, Cilla Black, Vera Lynn, Winifred Atwell, Danny la Rue, Vince Hill, Tiny Tim, Ronnie Corbett, Des O’Connor, Val Doonican, the Inkspots, John Rowles, Shona Laing, Robbie Ratana, Larry Morris, Suzanne, John Grenell, Midge Marsden, Billy T. James, Howard Morrison, Suzanne Prentice, Ritchie Pickett, Patsy Riggir, Tom Sharplin, Ray Woolf, Ray Columbus, Gray Bartlett and Brendan Dugan. And that barely scratches the surface.

He wrote scripts for Tainui Stephens’ great documentary series on Maori musicians, When the Haka Became Boogie; he was the founding music director at Radio Pacific in 1979; during the eighties and nineties he was one of the main petitioners for a New Zealand music quota on radio; he played in theatre bands for years, including the premieres of Hair and Oh Calcutta; he helped put together the first issue of NZ Musician Magazine in September 1988

and continued to write for the magazine for over two decades.

But those are just facts from a life well lived. As I said, Bruce was friend and I think the thing I’ve taken most from the years we knew each other was that Bruce was someone who believed that pleasure is greater if it is shared. I’d often get calls from him because he’d discovered a new piece of music (it was Bruce who introduced me to the brilliant William Shatner album Has Been, as well the drumming of Shelley Manne) or read a particularly interesting book, and he just had to share it with someone.

That’s a good way to live. It’s very easy to be insular, to horde your joys like a collector amassing the biggest pile of gold. But pleasures, be they a poem or a clarinet solo or a cocktail recipe are not diminished by sharing, they are increased, and Bruce knew that.

And with that in mind, I’d like to suggest a cocktail. Last year it was daiquiris all round, this year at the Country Club we’re taking a trip back to the seventies, that time when sophisticated folk would sip Mateus Rose or Babysham, and make little crosses of chocolate on top of their Brandy Alexanders.

So grab your cocktail shaker. Add a couple of measures of Galliano; add a couple of measures of Cointeau; add a couple of measures of orange juice (that’s fresh orange juice, squeeze it yourself for maximum pleasure); add a couple of measures of cream. Then add a dash more cream, some ice, shake vigorously and strain it into a glass, preferably one of those flat types which was once used for creating champagne towers.

And enjoy.

Just remember folks - drink responsibly (or stay at home and drink outrageously) and have a happy new year.

Special achiever swims ‘like a fish’ Daniel Everard, 14, is this month’s receiver of the ‘Special Achievers Award’ from Mobility Equipment & Services.

Daniel has moderate-severe autism and has been swimming at CCS Disability Action since 2006.

It has taken him years to build his confidence in the water, but he is now happy putting his whole head under the water – an action which took five years of hard work. Now Daniel swims like a fish – swimming lengths, holding his breath and learning freestyle – exceptional progress. He was nominated by Bonnie Kelly at CCS Disability Action.

Urgent: A personal relationship with Jesus The Mayans got it wrong - the world did not end on December 21st and we are still here!

Nevertheless, we need to understand that time is short, that we are living in the last of the last days. Bible prophecies concerning the last days are being fulfilled around us at an ever-increasing rate. The rapture of the Church and the second coming of Jesus are closer than we realise.

The restoration of Israel as a nation on May 15th, 1948, started the ‘end-time clock’ because end-time prophecies require Israel to be revived as a nation and back in the land God gave them in an everlasting covenant. Today, Israel is a cup of trembling to all the nations, the Hebrew language has been restored and the land itself is blossoming and blooming as God

As we prepare to face a new year, we often wonder what that year will hold for us.

Considering the global situation and the increase in lawlessness around us, perhaps we face 2013 without the confidence of previous years.

No matter what 2013 may hold, we need to be in right relationship with Jesus.

God is King over all the earth and even as mankind continues to try and push Him out of the picture (and lawlessness increases as a consequence), He knows the beginning from the end, His Word is truth and He will outwork His purposes as He has declared in Scripture.

Welcoming a new year Christmas is behind us and we can start to relax.

The next major event is New Year’s weekend.

I quite like New Year’s Day, because it reminds us God has put another year in front of us and we can make plans and goals for a new season. Many of you will make New Year’s resolutions with some success at keeping them, but there is merit in not only looking

forward but also looking back and learning from both our successes and failures this year.

The apostle Paul, in looking back on his life, says to his friend Timothy: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7 (NIV).

We could say

• I have worked well.

• I have done with excellence what I set out to do.

• I have achieved my goals and I have kept my Christian faith alive and well.

What a sense of satisfaction for each of us if we could look back on the past year and say those three things with honesty and confidence.

As we face a new year, these would also be good goals for each of us and that through determination and the grace of God we would be able to achieve these things.

Did science disprove God? In 1953, Stanley Miller made a small quantity of amino acids in a controlled experiment.

Amino acids are the building blocks of life. It felt like the first experimental verification of evolution, and led to a resurgence of hope that science alone might explain everything… but within a few decades various assumptions were shown to be false (such as the makeup of gasses in the early atmosphere as revealed by Geologists ). Miller conceded in the 1990s, saying “The problem of the origin of life has turned out to be much more difficult than I, and most other people, envisioned.”

While scientists do a great job (and help us live longer), they cannot explain how life began. NASA scientists rejoiced in 1991 at their confirmation of the initial ‘big bang’ – but then everyone remembered that every effect needs a cause.

In the last two decades science has discovered ‘machinery’ inside the cell

that is more complicated than could ever have been imagined. The idea that humans are the result of a cosmic accident alone is convincing fewer people.

For example, prominent atheistic philosopher Antony Flew has changed his position due to these new evidences.

For an oft-quoted word picture, Sir Fred Hoyle, professor of astronomy at Cambridge, said the chance higher life forms might have emerged in this way is comparable with the chance that “a tornado sweeping through a junk-yard might assemble a Boeing 747 from the materials therein”. What’s it got to do with religion? Whatever view you take on the above, a God is still needed in the picture – and that means your hope in God is valid. He might be invisible to the eye, but He is there.

So why not visit a church or look into these things, for faith can make sense, and that can bring much-needed hope to life.

Following the rails The Tauranga Model Railway Club is presenting its annual show at Mount Maunganui College next week.

Four layouts will include children’s favourite ‘Thomas and Friends’ and a realistic model of the NZR Raurimu Spiral.

Visiting layouts from across the North Island include a British scene from the Matamata club and the huge scale model of “Horton in Ribblesdale” from the Auckland Central Railway Club – an exact copy of real life Lancashire.

The show is on from January 4-6 from 10am-4pm. Entry $15 family, $6 for adults and $2 children.

Tauranga residents Mike Buck, Peter Powely and Dave Bulwer were looking forward to seeing the plane.
