Here’s one for all the summer holiday wannabes: More than 50 self-confessed crap surfers descended on a Cornwall beach recently for the World Championship of Crap Surfing.

I have too many friends on facebook, so some of you will have to go.

I know this will be hard on some of you. But let’s be realistic here. I recently read that the definition of a true friend is someone you would donate an organ to.

Considering the fact that I only have one, or in some cases two, organs of any particular description; plus the fact that some of those organs are particularly stressed and overworked – then it’s not looking good for many thousands of you.

In fact, realistically, I believe that my number of friends should be reduced to one or two.

And let’s hope that those two friends don’t both want a kidney at the same time or someone will be out of luck. And don’t even start on my liver – that has enough problems of its own, without being threatened with a new home.

And judging from some of the lifestyle habits of my friends, it’s arguably better off where it is, than going somewhere it may be subject to abuse, excesses and generally poor lifestyle and diet choices.

So that’s that. The culling will start this week – as soon as I’ve figured out what my password is.

Don’t take this personally. You can always join up as a friend of the dog, since Flo’s now on Facebook. Her page probably makes more sense anyway.

Community call to help reduce crime 

The Matua Community Patrol group is calling on people to help them reduce crime in the area.

Volunteers are being sought for the group, originally formed in 2008.

Organiser Rob Tomson says they have a shortage of patrollers, which

means they are not able to achieve their aims.

“On Wednesday, February 1, a meeting will be held at the pavilion on Fergusson Park at 7.30pm to decide a way forward,” says Rob. Volunteers under New Zealand Police Northern Command Centre

patrol the streets at least twice on Friday and Saturday nights.

“If you think you could spare one Friday or Saturday night once every six to eight weeks and would like to help keep our area crime free, please come to the meeting,” says Rob.



Tauranga to be a university town The first step has been taken this week towards establishing a university campus in Tauranga’s central business district.

The city council started the ball rolling by agreeing to provide the land, which is the outdoor car parking area in Durham Street for the campus to the Tertiary Partnership.

The partnership, between the University of Waikato, the BOP Polytechnic and Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi, makes the Tauranga campus the first in the country designed to deliver a university campus experience in a central business district between three such tertiary educators.

It will increase the ability of the city’s tertiary network to retain young people and Maori within the Bay of Plenty region and enable first generation students to study at university level without leaving the region.

University of Waikato vice chancellor professor Alister Jones says it will also attract foreign students at a post graduate level and research funding.

The recommendation was unanimously approved by councillors, though there were concerns expressed about the loss of the $110,000 parking revenue from the 0.4 hectare carpark.

David Stewart says the long-term benefits of the city campus will far outweigh the parking income.

Waikato University with 10,500 full-time equivalent students, brings $130 million into Hamilton every year.

A viable campus requires a size of between 1-1.5ha says Alister, additional land which will eventually be bought. The entire Cameron Elizabeth Durham block is designated for educational purposes.

If construction starts this year, stage one will open in 2015 for 500 full-time students, but with capacity for 700. Construction of stage two would take place in 2019 to create capacity for 1000 full-time students, followed by stage three in 2025/26 to create capacity for 1500 students by 2032.

The 0.4ha carpark land provided by the city council will enable construction of stages one and two. Further land would be sought for stage three, which will

be funded from other sources.

The land is provided free for 33 years, by which time the university is expected to be able to pay a lease. The Polytechnic’s Bongard centre is a $14 million building, on land valued at $3 million and returning rates to the city of $9.5 thousand each year.

Mayor Stuart Crosby says just building the campus will provide a boost to the city’s building and construction industry. There will also be spin offs with private developers stepping up to provide student accommodation.

The initiative is a response to a demonstrated need for further tertiary facilities in the Bay of Plenty, and the inability of the tertiary institutions to provide them.

The campus will provide tertiary education from pre-degree to postgraduate and a university experience for the community, industry and schools.

With a focus on innovation, it will be used for teaching and research, business incubation, schools technology and science engagement, management and executive education, and research and development projects.

Have a dive in Pilot Bay Ever wanted to play with dive gear, but didn’t want to pay for the course, then the place to be is Pilot Bay on Sunday afternoon.

From 2pm Sunday, the Mount Underwater Club is offering people a free, supervised play in shallow water.

“We will be giving

people a chance to try on dive equipment,” says club committee member Glen Grant.

“We’ll have masks and fins and snorkels, maybe a few wetsuits and things like that. Buoyancy compensators and regulators and tanks; everything except the weight belt.

They will be walked

along the bay by a dive club member and the whole exercise is under the supervision of a qualified dive instructor says Glen.

Underwater club members will be setting up at the Salisbury wharf end of Pilot Bay shortly before 2pm and they will be there until 7-8pm says Glen.

“Afterwards they can have a beer and a look at the club rooms, have a meal – there’s a restaurant there as well.”

The day is a bit of a membership drive to give people a chance to have a go with dive gear and see if they like the experience.

“I’ve snorkelled along there and it’s actually quite surprising what you see on the bottom,” says Glen.

“There’s little star fish, the odd cucumber. You might see a little flounder, even herring and sprats I’ve seen running around there.”

A whale of a walk Whale enthusiast Brandon Stone is walking to Mauao’s summit everyday to train for his ‘Whale Walk’ which is raising funds to protect whale breeding grounds in the Ross Sea. Photo by Bruce Barnard.

Mount Maunganui whale expert Brandon Stone knows just how inspiring it is to swim with the giant marine mammals.

“The awesome power of seeing them breach, their enormous size and intelligence, and just the whole experience of interacting with a wild animal – it’s just amazing.”

Brandon, who regularly swims with humpback whales on whale watching trips he runs in Tonga, says the sight of migrating baleen whales past the Bay of Plenty coast will become increasingly rare if the Ross Sea is not protected.

That is why he is lacing up his walking shoes to soon set off on a 32-day trek through 11 of New Zealand’s top walks. Covering 750km of iconic landscapes, Brandon is hoping to raise $10,000 for the Last Ocean Charitable Trust that is campaigning for a marine protection area in Ross Sea. To prepare for the adventure he has adopted the walk to Mauao’s summit for his daily training, stretching to as

many as nine ascents in a day.

Brandon says it is critical to protect the Ross Sea’s feeding grounds of bountiful krill that the Humpbacks and other baleen whales feed on to ensure their ongoing survival.

“The amazing Humpback Whales that we swim with every year in Vavau, Tonga, have migrated directly from these rich feeding grounds in the Ross Sea to Tonga to breed.

“We want to support the protection of this habitat and protect Humpbacks.”

Brandon developed a passion for whales and marine mammals when completing his marine studies at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic before going on to skipper Tauranga’s first dolphin safari tours and helping produce a film on whales in Antarctica.

He says the Bay of Plenty coast is active with marine mammals at this time of year – including pods of hundreds of Bottlenose Dolphins and False Killer Whales that were seen off the coast last week.

Piping on for Gaelic tradition

It takes a special type to follow the Gaelic spirit of music.

Gaelic Festival organiser and the Bay of Plenty Pipes and Drums president Kevin Nally has heard it all.

While Kevin is a drummer himself, he knows about the challenges some players and their families have faced when learning the bagpipes.

“I do know of people who have hated having their children learning to play.”

He gives the example of a young player who had to practise his chanter (the instrument basic piping is learnt on) inside the family car to reduce the wheezing,

droning noise.

“You can play the bagpipes after about 12 months, but it takes years and years to get really good at it.”

Like a lot of pastimes, it has become harder to attract the next generation of players to pipe and drum bands, but Kevin and his fellow members are determined to ensure it continues.

This weekend, the tradition is celebrated when the fifth Gaelic Festival is held, with performances by pipe and drum bands from the central North Island, Highland and Irish dancers, Scottish Country dancers and marching groups.

“Most of the members have Scottish or Irish heritage – and even though they are about fifth

generation Kiwis they are still very passionate about their heritage.”

Kevin says the Gaelic Festival is a practise run for the much bigger National Pipe Band Championship which will attract 60 bands to Tauranga from around New Zealand and Australia on March 9-10.

While the festival is celebrating many Gaelic traditions, forget about the haggis – at least for this weekend.

“With haggis, you always need whiskey – but being held in a public park that’s not an option.”

The Gaelic Festival is at Coronation Park on Saturday, January 28 between 12.30pm and 5pm. Gold coin donation.

Introducing ‘Mr March’ Being one of the hottest working men in New Zealand is all in a day’s work for Papamoa lifeguard Jordan Hills.

The 19-year-old former Mount Maunganui College student is the winner of this year’s The Edge FM’s Men at Work calendar competition and will hereon be known as ‘Mr March’.

“Yeah everyone is calling me Mr March at work now, and all of my friends introduce me as Mr March.”

The famous photo that will now grace the walls of many teenage girls’ rooms, and even take place in the Hills’ family home when March 2012 rolls around, was taken as a “bit of a joke” while Jordan was working as a lifeguard at a friend’s family wedding.

“I was working at the wedding and my friend thought it would be funny to get a few pictures. We took a few and they entered two of them.”

Sent in by a friend, Jordan was unaware he was even

entered in the competition until his friend got a call from The Edge telling her that Jordan had made the finals.

The top 12 finalists were then posted online for public voting, which closed last week.

Jordan says he didn’t know he had won the competition until he heard it on the radio on Friday, January 20, and went online to check.

“I went to the website and saw my picture up there. It’s pretty cool, I didn’t think I would win overall though.”

A second year Sport and Recreation student at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, Jordan spends his summer months dividing his time between a job at Hell Pizza in Papamoa and his role as a surf lifeguard for the Papamoa Surf Club.

Jordan enjoys being a lifeguard and says it is always a challenging job.

“It can be tough, you always have to make sure you keep your eyes on the flags and in the water, you have to be watching the beach the whole time to make sure people are alright.”

when he was a 16-year-old working at the end of Papamoa Beach.

“A lady became caught in a rip, and another guy had gone out to help her and got caught himself.

“I paddled out and we managed to do a double clip tow back into shore and she ended up being okay.

“It was pretty scary, we were only 16, you really are just working on adrenalin.”

Jordan will be putting the $500 cash prize he received for winning the competition towards a trip to Australia for the Surf Life Saving Championships in, ironically, March this year.

Mount Maunganui College student Mason Pickering is preparing to tackle the surf and sand this weekend when he competes in the Surf Lifesaving Eastern Regional Championships.

The 16-year-old lifeguard from Papamoa Surf Club is aiming high this year – hoping to make it into the world championships in November. He is not underestimating the competition at this weekend’s event in Mount Maunganui though.

“It involves all of the clubs in the eastern region, including the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, New Plymouth and Auckland. It’s going to be pretty big.

“The ultimate goal this year is to make it to the worlds in Adelaide at the end of 2012 and then onto the worlds in France in 2014.”

Having been involved in surf lifesaving since he joined the junior surf school at four years old, Mason is pretty confident when it comes to the surf race,

which he says is his favourite event.

“The surf race is the best discipline for me – it’s what I have grown up with.”

Mason recently won the Under-16 class and finished third overall in the Round the Mount Swim.

This weekend’s event, Saturday and Sunday, January 28-29, features surf, board and ski legs and a combined Ironman event.

Papamoa Surf Club head coach Kurt Wilson says it is the second biggest surf sports event in New Zealand, after the Nationals and is expecting about 800 lifeguards to compete.

In 2011, Papamoa were beaten by Mount Maunganui Surf Club by one point. This year Kurt says they are hoping to gain the top spot.

“The members are really all-rounders, they are diverse in what they deliver.”

Kurt expects the club will have a good chance at winning the Under-19 surf race, with Mason strong in the swim leg, while the club has some “hot players” in the beach sprint, including the current national men’s sprint champion Kodi Harman.

This weekend’s event at Mount Maunganui Main Beach starts from 9am on Saturday and 10am on Sunday.

Humbled by award Tauranga has a new hero in town with Detour Theatre’s Kim Williamson winning the Kiwibank Local Hero award.

Kim was nominated for the award for her services to drama in the community and received a letter this month informing her of her win. She says when she read the letter she was a little bit embarrassed.

“You look at people around you and the things they are doing and you think ‘goodness I just get on and do what I do’.

“It’s no better and no worse to what other people are doing.”

Kim says it is humbling “to be honoured for something you love doing”.

She runs drama classes at Detour Theatre at the Historic Village on 17th Avenue for adults with mental and physical disabilities.

“I’ve been doing it for about six to seven years.

“We were approached by the IHC, which is now known at IDEA Services, to ask if we might be able to run some classes for some of their clients.”

Kim says they thought it was a good idea and they jumped at the opportunity.

“We thought we would give it a go and see what happens.

“It’s just grown and grown and now I’m running five classes a week.

“Apparently there is a bit of a fight as to who gets in the classes. We have lots of fun, I tend to think I have more fun then they do sometimes.”

Kim will receive the award at a ceremony in March, with dates and locations still to be confirmed.

A Tauranga choir is making a desperate plea for a conductor, music director to lead them.

The Oriana Singers have been going for about 20 years and are facing the possibility of disbandment if they don’t find anyone to conduct them.

President David Wall says if they don’t find someone soon, then they may not be able to continue.

“We are looking for someone who can commit to us for about a year or somebody who can get us ready for a concert.

“There are 40 of us in the choir and we don’t what to give it up, but if we can’t find anybody then we will have no other choice.”

The group, which sings an array of music, rehearses at the Salvation Army Hall on Eversham Road.

David says they have advertised in music magazines, on local radio, just about everything they can think of, they have done.

“There are two major choir groups in Tauranga, us and the Tauranga Civic Choir.

“We compliment each other, we don’t compete. It would be sad if we had to go.”

The choir is a mixed choir of about 35 to 40 voices at one time and perform all genres of choral music two or three times a year.

A new BMX dirt track is being officially launched this weekend, marking months of hard work by students of Papamoa College and BMX biking enthusiasts.

The Summerhill Recreational Farm skills track is officially opening on January 28 at Summerhill Farm in Reid Road, Papamoa. The track is a 450 metre return circuit through the trees, designed for younger and inexperienced riders to train and improve on.

The project was the initiative of Year 7 students from Papamoa College who took it up as part of the problem-based learning curriculum the college offers. This curriculum requires students to use practical knowledge to solve real-life problems.

Year 7 teacher Angela Stensness

says the students brought the idea to fruition as many felt they needed to build their biking skills away from the more experienced riders on the advanced course.

“The students put together a big proposal, with well-rounded research. The engagement was so high because it was something they cared about.

“By term four, students were up there on weekends actually digging, raking and hosing and all the nitty gritty work that was required.

“The fact they were able to plan something and see it to the point of completion was a great learning experience and something they can now enjoy.”

The skills track features a number of challenges including rollers (two mounds), table tops, and a step-up onto a table top, where riders can lift themselves up onto a dirt platform on their bike.

Summerhill manager Karl Young says it is great to see the

young riders try to master the skills and gain confidence like older riders as they practise tricks to perfection.

He says it is a tribute to the sport that the college students and the many volunteers have worked hard to build a place of their own.

“The most amazing thing is that this is one of the few sports when riders have to build their own facilities – not like a swimming complex which is built using a collective of rate payer’s money.

“To see the kids up here, putting in all hard work and sweating it out is just an amazing experience for them.”

The open day begins from 10am. It also features demonstrations by New Zealand Freestyle BMX champions, including Jeff Mildon who made the Guinness Book of World Records for the first ever triple back flip trick.

Online promotion on Facebook and YouTube has landed Mount Maunganui singer Shirley Ryder an opportunity to broadcast her music to over 2.2 million listeners.

Shirley began playing a few covers around Tauranga 15 years ago, but after a break to have children, returned in full force to get her own songs heard.

“I have always loved playing and singing.

“I began writing as young as 12 years old with songs about jiving and dancing.

“We used to hear Bee Gees songs or a Michael Jackson song, and when I was younger I always thought I could write it better,” Shirley says with a laugh.

Shifting away from the popular discojiving, Shirley now describes her music as a “pop-rock-folk sound, with a distinct Kiwi style”.

After a few recording attempts in her 20s, Shirley recently returned to Soundtree Recording Production studios and, with the help of producer Shane Davies and Graeme Hardaker, recorded her first single and EP. “We worked for about three weeks solidly on it and recorded the video at the studio as well in the beautiful surrounding areas of the Kaimais.

“It was a great opportunity and it only took a few takes.”

The single, ‘Circles’, was released on YouTube and debuted at number 20 on the top New Zealand music videos for a number of weeks.

“In such a short time it received overwhelming positive response,” says Shirley.

Her plans for 2012 are now to get a full album out by March, with a CD release party to follow.

Fighting fires, supporting community Allan Bicker has been involved with the Papamoa Volunteer Fire Brigade since discovering the volunteer station on his doorstep 25 years ago. Photo by Bruce Barnard.

The night Allan Bicker shifted into his Papamoa house 25 years ago he discovered his vocation.

“The day I moved in there was this horrible wailing sound next door, I was thinking ‘What the heck’s that?’. I didn’t realise that three houses away was the fire station because it was just like a shed,” says Allan.

He recalls looking over the fence to see men dashing down the road to the shed then seeing a fire engine leave in a rush.

A few weeks later he met members of the Papamoa Volunteer Fire Brigade at a community gala and decided to come along to its training session the next Tuesday night.

For the past 25 years Allan has been a regular at the weekly training going on to become a key member of the brigade.

Allan, now Papamoa’s chief fire officer, will be awarded the New Zealand Fire Service’s Gold Star award for 25 years of service on Saturday.

Allan says he still loves helping the community by being involved and has made many great friends through the brigade.

“It’s a real family feel. You are part of the brigade family; everyone looks after each other and are friends.”

The 15-member volunteer brigade is the first response crew for the area between Papamoa East and Palm Beach Boulevard, while they are second responders for the area stretching down to Te Ara Place and around the Papamoa Hills.

“This is not a job for us, it’s a vocation. If you didn’t want it to do it you wouldn’t be,” Allan says.

Looking back over the years he has all sorts of memories, but highlights include rescuing

animals – including horses stuck in the eight feet deep drains along Parton Road.

“Fortunately we haven’t had a lot of house fires in Papamoa. I put that down to the promotional work we do on prevention and smoke alarms, but we still get some.”

Despite rapid growth in Papamoa over the past 15 years, Allan is pleased the number of call-outs has stayed steady at about the 100-130 mark per year.

However, as a dormitory area – with many people commuting outside Papamoa to work – the brigade has a challenge recruiting members who are available for daytime call-outs. To deal with this they rely on some shiftworkers and will soon launch a campaign to attract housewives.

Ironically, currently the only woman crew member is Allan’s daughter Tammy.

Kitset to flying mustang From front cover

There are mustangs galore at the Tauranga Airshow this weekend with Marty Cantlon’s T51 expected to be joined by three or four other T51s.

Marty’s 3/4 (75 per cent) size Titan all-metal kitset aircraft is powered by a 3.5 litre V6 Honda engine and has just recently received certification and is being flown by test pilot Phil Hooker.

“There are three types of Mustangs,” says Phil.

“There’s a real mustang, which is a P51. There are two of those flying for Warbirds NZ. “Then there’s the purple Thunder Mustang which Simon Gault’s got, that’s the plastic kit. Then there’s the T51 which is a metal one.”

The T51s can be powered by either a microlite engine, a 2.5 litre V6 Suzuki or the Honda.

Marty’s is the first in the country with the bigger Honda engine.

The Thunder Mustang has a V12 engine delivering 640hp compared with the original’s 1490hp Packard/Merlin V12.

Simon’s Gault’s Thunder Mustang is a 5/8 size replica and has

a lot more grunt than the T51 says Phil. The T51 is a smaller aircraft and less engine power is required.

“The war ones all had bulletproof armour plating because people used to shoot at those ones.”

The aircraft has taken about three years to build.

Marty’s painted it the colours and marking of the US Air Force 357 fighter group with the black and white ‘D-Day’ stripes.

“It was flown by Major Pete Peterson,” says Marty.

“In the day, he was a quite famous World War Two ace.

That’s the Chuck Yeager Squadron, that’s where that came from – Chuck, Bud Anderson and this guy Pete Peterson.”

A second Tauranga Mustang, also in 357 fighter group markings, is nearing completion and is about to begin test flying.

Marty’s mustang is expected to be joined by about three or four other Titan Mustangs for the Sport Aviation part of the airshow beginning Thursday.

There are about nine of the aircraft flying with another 19 aircrafts in various stages of the build.

It is a popular kitset because the owner had a

brand new aircraft with performance that surpasses many general aviation aircraft.

“You can build it yourself and you end up with a very reasonable priced, good performing new aeroplane,” says agent Ivan Campbell.

“They are a complex aeroplane. They have a fully retractable undercarriage, constant speed propellers – the same features as the original mustang. Complex, but not impossible.

“Guys that have never done this before are putting them together. It’s a very good kit – the hard bits are done for you.”

A university for downtown Tauranga

In early December, (Sunlive December 2) I alerted readers to the probability of building a ‘bricks and mortar’ downtown university for Tauranga – and the huge environmentally friendly economic benefits this would bring.

I have to say I was alarmed to read this week that the city is being asked to offer a 33-year rental holiday for this venture. I am all for Tauranga City partnering in the land and buildings for this venture, but I don’t think it is realistic to expect a rent holiday for so long.

A five or 10 year rent holiday seems reasonable, with all parties (Tauranga City, regional council and TECT) sharing in this excellent long-term investment.

Let’s hope the proposed 33-year term

doesn’t give our city councillors an excuse to kick this for touch, as this proposal has the potential to be a game changer – not only for downtown Tauranga, but also for our region as a whole.

Don’t let the nay-sayers crush this proposition – let’s all get behind this and show central government that we believe in our region and are prepared to fund it.

Bike for your brekkie Save money, get active and meet friendly people in Sport Bay of Plenty’s annual Bike Wise Month this February.

Recreation advisor Nicki Miller says Bike Wise is a chance to take up beginner opportunities, get out and have a go.

“Tauranga is lucky to have great off-road cycle ways and areas for recreational cycling.

“We have seen improvements of cycle lanes in roading infrastructure which helps to encourage more people to opt for environmentally friendly transport.”

There is an event for every age and ability during Bike Wise Month – brush up on some basic bike maintenance skills at one of the workshops, try out the new BMX track at Cambridge Road Park or hit the saddle in a road cycling group.

Happy New Year from TCAL. With the December rain, it seemed that every local and holiday-maker decided to head for the Mount Hot Pools, making for a busy time for our dedicated team. We also experienced bumper numbers at Baywave, with families coming in to escape the weather. Overall our user numbers show a solid performance for Baywave for December, and a three year high for the Mount Hot Pools – so thank you to everyone for your support!

When the sun did come out, our new umbrellas at the Hot Pools received lots of favourable comments. With the new umbrellas, staff can monitor the sun’s movement and position them to provide maximum shade for the greater portion of the day. While they are not “all weather” performers (i.e. they are not water proof to handle heavy rain like we received in December) they are UV resistant sun shades rated to withstand 150 km/h winds and they come with a ten year warranty. These umbrellas are the same as you will find at Hanmer Springs where they cope with winds, high temperatures and freezing winters and snow. Let’s hope they don’t have to cope with snow in Tauranga!

The four new jets at the Hot Pools have also received positive feedback, despite being a different design and thus providing a different sensation from the last ones we had. Like everything though, there’s always room for improvement, and so in response to requests, our plan is to narrow the opening of two of the jets to create a more intense sensation. This work will start soon (after the high-use holiday season is behind us).

Also on the radar is a slippery area that’s appeared on the brushed surface concourse at the Hot Pools. We are working with our contractors to remedy the situation and in the meantime, we have placed non-slip mats on the area where we have issues.

Did someone say Baywave is leaking? We are concerned that this misinformation is out there – particularly as there have been no leaks at Baywave since TCAL took over the management (nor before, according to our information). To allay any further concerns however, we are installing water meters at Baywave this quarter, and thereafter at other TCAL managed pools. These meters will enhance our early alert systems and help avert any repeat of the leaks that occurred at the Mount Hot Pools.

racing has become so popular that trainers from all over the North Island have set their horses for these events. The fields reflect this with more than 160 horses starting. Study up the grass track form because the dividends are often huge at this meeting.

This year has attracted horses from some of the strongest stables across the North Island.

All of the children’s entertainment is free, including bouncy castles, jeeps, pony rides, lolly scrambles and a merrygo-round. The Kids Go Racing caravan will also be there with prizes to be won, including movie vouchers, DVDs and lots more.

One of the main attractions for kids is the scavenger hunt and every child who enters will receive a Kids Go Racing pack of goodies and club president Garry Hardaker says it’s a great chance for a fun day out before the children head back to school.

People are welcome to bring a picnic, but there will also be a wide variety of food available.

People should also bring sunscreen and hats.

“Make sure you get there early – this event has grown so much there will be people covering the grass with their picnic gear in front of the stand,” says Garry.

It is a family event so a BYO policy is in place, one dozen stubbie beers or one bottle of wine per person.

Irish to perform ‘Gallaher’ A play on legendary Katikati rugby player Dave Gallaher written by four local theatre enthusiasts is to be performed in his native Ireland later this year.

‘Gallaher’ debuted during the Rugby World Cup when it was performed at the Katikati Primary School over four days.

A visitor representing the Dave Gallaher Society in his birthplace of Ramelton was so impressed when she saw the play she has encouraged a theatre group in the nearby city of Letterkenny to perform it later this year.

The co-writer and director for the play’s Katikati show, Julie Thomas, says everyone involved was thrilled to learn it will be performed near his birthplace that he left aged four.

Julie says the play, which she wrote with Judy Junger, Francis Young and Di Logan, celebrates his great achievements as a top rugby player and was written and performed last year to coincide with the rugby tournament.

She says the writers hope other theatre groups in New Zealand would be interested in performing the play on the national rugby legend whose impressive achievements include captaining the 1905 All Blacks team ‘The Originals’ that won 34 of 35 games on a tour in Britain and Ireland.

The writing group hope to write more plays on inspiring past Katikati residents, with Francis Young currently working on a play about Dr Joe Burstein – an Austrian Jew whose life before practising as a GP in Katikati included time in a concentration camp and composing musical symphonies.

She says the Katikati Theatre Company is still selecting which play it will perform this year and is considering a number of smaller pre-written pieces that can be produced without the hassle of needing to build a temporary stage.

Great way to travel the world The Tauranga-Western Bay of Plenty Friendship Force is a great way to travel the world and meet and make wonderful friends.

Recently a group of 11 members from Tauranga and Western Bay joined members of the Gisborne Club, North Bay Canada, Somerset England and Seattle-Tacoma travelers in Sydney and were home hosted by the members of that club.

During the time, member Sheryl Farrow says the club members walked the Sydney Harbour Bridge, visited the Rocks, sailed the Harbour, walked the Sculptures by the Sea at Bondi, had an entertaining Melbourne Cup afternoon, went on a bus trip to the Blue Mountains and made lots of wonderful friends.

“During the visit there, we had a trip on the Murray River, saw the Bunyip, went to a private home theatre, went to a Salvage and Save complex, visited a local school who run a shop and raise $6000 a year teaching the children about meeting and greeting people, stocktaking, handling money, balancing the books, supplying good quality goods from the local community, we visited the Big Olive – a factory processing olives – visited some local museums and again met and made some wonderful friends.”

Kiss-FM re-launches Kiss-FM is back on air following an online-only re-launch, with its owner, Mount Maunganui resident Max Christoffersen, saying it’s live again for music lovers.

The station had a brief hiatus after a bid to get a new FM licence failed in 2011 with the government requiring more than $100,000 for it.

To beat the licence problem and to be able to continue providing a local radio station for Tauranga and Mount Maunganui, he shifted the operation online.

The new Facebook streaming is a first in the Bay as most streaming is done through private websites – not the public domain of Facebook.

No hand-out for Tourism BOP

Tourism Bay of Plenty’s plea for $600,000 from the Tauranga City Council to counter damage to the local hospitality industry done by the Rena, failed.

The decision was made at Monday’s Ten Year Plan meeting with the recommendation to go out for public consultation.

The council has agreed to recommend in its Ten Year Plan that it lobby on behalf of Tourism BOP with the Rena’s charterers, who have promised $1.1 million, defray Rena imposed expenses and hardships.

Tourism BOP chairman Paul Bowker says they have to act immediately to counter the deluge of negative publicity the Bay of Plenty and its tourism operators are suffering.

He says 70 per cent of the region’s tourism operators say Rena has had an adverse effect on their business over the summer holiday period.

Fishing boat sinks – cause unknown Inquiries are underway into the cause of the sinking of the fishing boat Rebecca May off the coast of Tauranga.

The Whitianga-based 18m long liner sunk 92km off the coast of Tauranga on Tuesday.

Its three crew members, including two from Tauranga, were rescued from a life raft near where the ship went down by a passing vessel at 1.30pm.

Maritime New Zealand spokesperson Sophie

Hazelhurst says the cause of the sinking is unclear.

The centre advised vessels in the area and emergency responders to assist the fishing boat estimated to be worth about $500,000.

Debris from containers including a fridge was collected from Slipper Island in the Coromandel on Tuesday.

A deep breath for your skin Nothing could have prepared me for the heavenly relaxation that awaited me at Tease Botanix’s new hair and beauty rooms.

Creator-owner Teena Cooke has branched out this year and enlisted the help of experienced beauty therapist Holly Pedersen to provide excellent beauty services, using Teena’s products at her Bellevue premise.

Luckily for me, I got to experience the Tease Botanix Signature Facial. This treatment has several points of difference to other facials I have experienced. The beauty of creating your own products means treatments can be created on-site, tailored to the needs of each client.

For my younger skin, I required products that dealt to hormonal issues and oily skin. The facial began with the Manuka Deep Cleanser to clean without drying out my skin and targeting break-outs. It smelt delicious (with a combination of Manuka honey and lavender), and left my skin noticeably smoother. I felt like the weight of the world was already lifted off my face.

Next was an AHA Fruit Gel Mask – a ‘non-chemical’ peel. Unlike harsh, abrasive chemical peels, this serum is designed to have the same effect (removing dead skin cells and rejuvenating my skin) without leaving my face red and inflamed.

The final face step was the mask, custom blended to suit my skin type.

Holly ended up selecting their Lotus Botanical Enhancer to add to the mask, which was generally amazing on my skin.

It didn’t feel heavy or gunky like other face masks and was light on my skin without the feeling of claustrophobia and suffocation.

But my favourite part of the facial was actually nothing to do with my face – it was the massage while the mask set.

Using Tease Botanix beautiful massage oils, Holly gave me an incredibly relaxing shoulder and neck massage, followed by a wrist and hand massage. It was divine and the perfect way to compliment the relaxation of the facial.

Painting a brighter future Teenagers from Arataki have been rolling up their sleeves to repaint the tagged fences in the area as part of a school holiday programme.

Tu Rangatahi Arataki Tonu programme coordinator Donald Welsh says the five week programme, which has been run as a pilot at the Arataki Community Centre, was a great success and has helped re-motivate many of the 15 young people involved, some of which were recommended for the programme by police or through the court. “We have really seen some incredible growth with these kids – and I think a lot of that has been about having some adult mentoring.

“It’s been about handing them the bat rather than actually going to bat for them,” says Donald.

Donald, who was running the programme for the Youth Mentoring Trust, says many of the secondary students involved are now a lot more motivated to return to study to help them get ahead.

“I have been pleased to hear them say they want to go on and learn more – going back to school or doing a course.”

The programme was focussed on teaching the young people responsibility and life skills and incorporated a DARE programme and gym training.

“There has been a great response from the community – with people pleased that the tagged fences have been repainted and seeing the young people in a more positive light.”

Donald hopes the programme, which was funded by Child, Youth and Family, Bayfair shopping centre and Tauranga City Council, will become an ongoing initiative at Arataki. He says there has also been strong interest from Child, Youth and Family in replicating the programme in other areas.

Healthy change for the New Year Are you wanting to make a difference to your health in 2012 – a real difference?

Are you wanting to achieve something that has perhaps been on your resolution list for a number of years? Lose weight, better manage your blood sugar, be more active, eat better or simply feel better. Have you tried before and not had much success?

Or have you tried before and been successful for a period of time, then gone back to square one after a while? Do you want a better way?

From experience, lifestyle change – real lifestyle change – takes a long time and requires not only your time and dedication, but support from those around you. Quick fix schemes are notorious for working initially, but they tend to be difficult to maintain. Examples of quick fixes are diets and exercise ‘challenges’. If we take the diet example – you can lose a significant amount of weight by dramatically changing the way that you eat, but dramatic changes are hard to maintain long term and eventually people go back to their old ways and the weight they lost comes back on and usually more of it too. Exercise challenges are fantastic for motivation and variety in a lifestyle that already includes

regular exercise and in this case, I encourage them. If your aim is to start being more active and make exercise a regular part of your life, however, a challenge is unlikely to be sustainable long term. This is because an exercise challenge is dramatically different from your current lifestyle and therefore you will see quick results, but you are unlikely to be able to maintain the exercise after the challenge period is up.

A better way of managing lifestyle change is the slowly, but surely approach. Small changes over a longer period of time do not illicit immediate results, but long term they are sustainable compared to the quick fix ideal. If you have a lifestyle goal, it is likely to be multifaceted – some changes to the way you eat, some changes to your activity levels, some changes to specific health issues.

There are no rules in terms of where you start or how you go about making those changes except only change a couple of things at a time. For example, if you want to lose weight and reduce your heart attack risk, then you probably have to make food changes, exercise more often, reduce the stress in your life and get a bit of rest and relaxation into your schedule. Use a diary so you can record your ‘process’ and your progress and tell someone what you are

CREATE THE BODY YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED! doing so that on those inevitable days when you feel unmotivated you have got someone who can help you along. Here is an example timeline – remember this is different for every person and for the purpose of this article describes the ‘slowly but surely’ process.

Week 1 and 2: Walk for 20min, 4 days per week and stop having pudding after dinner.

Week 3 and 4: Consciously increase fruit and vegetable intake by adding 2 extra vegetables to every dinner meal and having a piece of fruit with lunch.

Week 5 and 6: Increase walking to 25min 4 days per week and reduce alcohol intake to 1 standard drink per day.

At the end of week 6, review and write the next 6 weeks of your process. Your process will evolve over time and eventually, without any dramatic changes, you will be living a new lifestyle. Give it a go. What have you got to lose?

Dancing through the years With qualified teachers and a 100 per cent pass rate with pupils who have sat exams, Mount Maunganui Dance Academy is developing not only top dancers, but top all-rounders.

Run under the New Zealand Association of Modern Dance, the Mount Maunganui Dance Academy offers classes in jazz, tap, hip-hop and contemporary.

The academy also has pre-school classes for three and a half year olds and up, adult classes and all boy classes.

Former Mount Maunganui Dance Academy student Alex Hitchmough is one of the academy’s shining stars.

The Sir Edmund Hilary medal recipient began dancing when she moved from England at 14 years old. She began studying jazz ballet and hip-hop with Natasha McKenzie at the academy, before moving into contemporary and ballet when she began university.

Although she began dancing “quite late”, Alex threw herself into it and was given many opportunities by Natasha to excel.

“She let me become a student teacher when I was 15 years old. It was so great for me, it was the Alex Hitchmough started dancing at the biggest opportunity and she really nurtured me.”

Scottish dancing for all Tauranga Scottish Country Dancing Club enthusiasts Sarah Hilton and Chris Ingram believe they have one of the best hobbies.

Every week they get to dance formations which were created more than 200 years ago or as recently as last year. The pair believe this reflects the enduring popularity of Scottish Country Dancing – the Scottish version of social ballroom dancing.

The club’s beginner classes start back up again on Monday, February 6, and they are encouraging people of all ages to get involved.

Chris says the weekly sessions combine lessons with a social dance and people do not need to bring a partner.

“It is a great hobby because it’s very social, it’s good exercise and keeps your mind sharp,” says Chris.

The club has a strong social element, taking members to balls round the Bay of Plenty and Waikato.

Expanding on artistic talent Doug Sehnert has always been creative and when he looked around for an art school to expand his talents, The Learning Connexion (TLC) beckoned.

He says the “vibe, the colour and the friendliness” are what drew him in initially.

Doug has since gone all the way at TLC, starting with the Certificate programme and moving right through to Honours level. He now plans to study the Advanced Diploma.

Doug really enjoyed the atmosphere on campus and the freedom to create that TLC offers its students. He also speaks highly of the tutors.

“The tutors area really helpful and encouraging; they’re all artists as well and they love their jobs.”

Doug says that being at TLC has improved his confidence. He recently painted live in front of audiences.

His goals are to continue painting and to be a full-time artist, although he jokes that he’ll probably still need a part-time job for the rent.

Doug says he would love to make a living from his art eventually.

He says that TLC has provided him with plenty of opportunities.

“TLC will give you knowledge of yourself that you didn’t know was there.

It’ll take you back to the basics and free you up to create.”

Dance for grace and confidence STEPS Performing Arts was launched in 2010 specialising in Musical Theatre; combining singing, dance and drama, Theatre Craft (a dance form for theatrical performance) and tap for children aged four-years-and-up through to adults.

Owner and tutor Paula Harrison has a passion for both performing and teaching and loves to work with all age groups and enjoys watching the students grow, increase their confidence, self-esteem and develop new skills.

As well as preparing for exams, STEPS is proactive in working towards performances and talent competitions.

Rising country star sings in Australia Acclaimed Tauranga country singer Phoebe Ball may have won a string of awards for her performances, but her modest nature is not letting it go to her head.

The 20-year-old trainee early childhood teacher has flown to the Tamworth Country Music Festival to compete at the 40th annual Australian country music festival in rural New South Wales this week.

Phoebe describes the trip – which was a prize when she won the 2011 Country Music Entertainer of the Year award in November – as “the experience of a lifetime”.

“I want to go over there to see what happens. I’m not going to expect to win.”

She also won the Dead Ringer Band Encouragement Award at the Trans-Tasman Entertainer of the Year Awards in Norfolk Island last year.

Phoebe followed her primary school friend Hannah Cosgrove into singing at aged six and like Hannah – who won the 2010 intermediate country music entertainer award – has never looked back.

“I absolutely love it (singing). There is just a feeling when you are on stage – and it makes you just want to keep going.

“Seeing the faces in the audience enjoying your music, it’s such a thrill, I just love it.”

Phoebe tries to work on her performance by practising her singing at least three times a week and having a regular weekly singing lesson.

Dancing to directing Learn more than just dance – learn how to choreograph, produce and eventually direct your own shows with Third Avenue Dance Centre.

Formally Tina Peet School of Dance in Katikati, Tina has moved to Tauranga and has opened a new school location, continuing to specialise in Irish dancing, Highland and National dancing and Celtic dance.

With classes from pre-school to adults, Tina also offers teenage beginner classes and Celtic fairy classes for the little children.

The great thing about studying dance with Tina is it is more than just learning the basic steps. Celtic dance also includes components of drama and choreography and senior students go on to learn how to produce and direct their own shows.

The school also offers exams to qualify students as teachers and adjudicators of Highland and National dance. Irish and Celtic students can participate in a badge test system, where students gain badges as they progress through their studies – beginning with simple dances through to the higher examinations as they learn to become teachers.

Through Third Avenue Dance Centre there are constant opportunities to perform for an audience, with many displays and competitions throughout the year.

The school has a great relationship with Bay of Plenty Pipes and Drums, creating a real Irish and Scottish vibe.

Angelina Ballerina has come to town The northern hemisphere’s classical danceteaching adaptation of the hugely popular children’s books featuring the adorable pink tutu-clad mouse, ‘Angelina’, has been brought to Tauranga by the Susanne Hanger School of Dance.

“When I first learned of the migration of the Angelina Ballerina dance programme from England to Australia and New Zealand I instantly knew I wanted it for my school,” says principal Susanne Hanger.

Part of the reason for that was one of her former pupils, Hannah Lane (nee Gadd) took her sabbatical in London, with a two-year stint as a dance teacher at Royal Windsor Castle, where she was first introduced to, and taught, the Angelina Ballerina programme.

Hannah, along with Susanne, begin the programme here in Tauranga next Wednesday for children aged three to six years old.

OPENING LETTER FROM THE DIRECTORS

Following the inaugural Tauranga City Airshow in 2010 we elicited feedback to find out what you, the public, wanted to make the next airshow even better and more successful than the last one. We have made several changes including removing all the smaller corporate tents from the crowdline, allowing more viewing areas, moving the Sport Aircraft Association of New Zealand (SAANZ) camp down near the helicopter operations site, making it easier to see these often weird and wonderful aircraft, and grouping the trade sites together.

The biggest change has been the move to running an air display programme on both days.

This year is the 75th Anniversary of the RNZAF. We congratulate the Air Force on 75 years of service to the people of New Zealand and invite you all to share the celebrations by visiting the RNZAF aircraft on static display and talking to the personnel on duty.

Our airshow offers not only the opportunity to appreciate increasingly rare classic aircraft, legends in their own right, but

also a wide range of world class flying skills exhibited by highly experienced display pilots. These pilots have choreographed and practised routines to entertain and thrill the public, while maintaining very high standards of flight and audience safety requirements.

Any airshow takes a huge number of “man hours” to organise and run. The Classics of the Sky-Tauranga City Airshow would not be possible without the efforts of the large team of volunteers from the three groups involved, Classic Flyers NZ, SAANZ and the Rotary Club of Tauranga-Te Papa. As Directors we appreciate the efforts of these people and the small full time staff at Classic Flyers NZ. Thank you also to our airshow partners and sponsors who help financially to make it happen. We urge you to support these companies as they have supported us.

Lastly we thank you, the public for coming to the airshow and hope you have a great weekend.

ORGANISING COMMITTEE

The 2010 Tauranga Airshow is still fresh in my memory. Families were everywhere enjoying a sky filled with an array of fighter jets, helicopters and hot air balloons. From the look of the programme, this year’s show will be even more spectacular.

It is wonderful to have this event in Tauranga. After 2010’s success, it has established itself as one which our residents are very proud of, competing with other first class airshows such as Wanaka’s. One point of difference for our Airshow is its convenience – I am not aware of any other show in the centre of the city, only minutes from everywhere.

A number of great individuals and organisations have come together to make the Airshow possible but can I single out a couple. Firstly, Classic Flyers NZ, one of the classiest venues and attractions in our city and, secondly, Te Papa Rotary. Both institutions through volunteer power have worked exceptionally hard in the lead up to this year’s event and deserve our thanks. And let’s not forget the members of Sport Aircraft Association of NZ (SAANZ), who hold their biennial conference and competitions over the airshow weekend.

All profits will go back to the community. Get along for great family fun and excitement.

Please Note Traffic around the airport is expected to be heavy this weekend so if you are heading to the air show this weekend here are some things you need to know:

Alternatively you could leave the car at home and walk, bus or cycle to the air show. A place to lock up your bike is being provided at the show - ask a marshal for directions.

Age Concern visiting service Age Concern offers a very valuable service to elderly people in Tauranga.

Many elderly people become increasingly isolated and lonely as friends and relations move on or die.

The result is that they get very few people calling to see them.

That lack of contact also makes them more vulnerable to people who knock on their door seeking to take advantage of them by overcharging them for a service or some other scam.

Age Concern runs an Accredited Visiting Service. This service matches volunteer visitors with elderly people who have contacted Age Concern to say that they would like some more company. The purpose of those visits is to simply sit and talk with the elderly person so that they can share experiences, friendship, ideas and opinions.

The volunteer visitor’s role is not to help with shopping or household tasks. The volunteer visitors are approved

by Age Concern and then matched with someone who has requested the service.

Age Concern keeps in contact with both the visitor and the person

being visited.

The result is a rewarding experience for both.

Anyone interested in volunteering as a visitor, having a visitor to call or who knows someone who might benefit on having a visitor to call, can phone Age Concern’s accredited visiting service coordinator Andrea Billingsley on 578 2631.

Mum is lonely Q. I think my mum is really lonely since dad passed away. She calls me all the time and I would love to spend more time with her, but I feel really pressured between the kids and my husband and work. What can I do to help her and take the pressure off me?

This is a common problem when someone loses their partner.

We all need our support networks, but sometimes as we get older they can slip away. Talk to her friends and encourage them to visit, or maybe put on a lunch for them to help them reconnect.

Make a regular time to call her when you are less pressured, or catching up on a chore like folding the washing so you have time to chat, and try and invite her over once a week for a meal.

There are a number of groups out there which your mother can join which will provide her with support and friendship.

Recycled Teenagers (call Jennifer on 571 1411) is an exercise and friendship group which runs in different areas around Tauranga.

There are often friendship groups at churches, or ask at your local community centre for information on groups in the area.

Your mother may need some encouragement and support to attend before she is comfortable to attend on her own, so maybe take a couple of days off to take her to check them out.

First residents plant community Few people can ever claim they are the first, but the original six residents to shift in to Bob Owens Retirement Village are excited about seeding a community.

The first four households shifted into Bethlehem’s rapidly growing retirement community a week before Christmas, settling just in time to hang their stockings.

Ralph Whitman, who shifted in with wife Heather from nearby Bethlehem Heights, says it is great to be part of the first batch of residents.

“We will be able to show them (the next residents) the ropes,” Ralph says with a laugh.

The former Air New Zealand pilot describes the Carmichael Road retirement home as “great” and compares it to the standard of the Hilton Hotel.

Bob says they were attracted by the retirement village’s high quality standards and continuity of care.

For Faye Dalton, from Bureta, one of the village’s greatest appeals is its location close to the Bethlehem Baptist Church. Location is also a big advantage for neighbour Helen Potts, from Papamoa, who is now a lot closer to her son in Bethlehem.

The six original residents were the first batch to shift in, with another 10 households due to shift into the townhouses and independent units during January, followed by new groups every month.

The village will eventually be home to about 450 residents and employ 150 staff.

Currently, 160 construction workers are working on the project that is expected to take three years to complete.

One of U3A’s popular interest groups is ‘Singing for Joy’, where any member can attend an afternoon singing, learning music and having fun.

The group was established to relish the joy of singing, rather than perform as entertainers for others enjoyment. Once abilities and extrovert natures were discovered, however, the group was asked to carry out several appointments.

The first was to prepare a musical selection to present at a Celebration of U3A Groups. After several well-known songs, the group gave an item singing ‘Whispering Hope’ – an old and popular favourite.

Ingredients 1 Pkt Pizza Bases 1 cutter (circle or square) 1 smoked chicken breast 1 camembert cheese, cut into thin slices 1 jar whole cranberry sauce Parmesan cheese Method Pre heat oven to 180 degrees. Cut pizza bases into circles or squares. Place a piece of smoked chicken on each pizza base with a slice of camembert cheese and a teaspoon of cranberry sauce on top. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden. Before serving, sprinkle with grated parmesan cheese.

Ingredients 1 Pkt Bellini (not sweet, plain) 1 Pkt cream cheese 100g salmon (smoked) 30 capers Zest of one lemon Chives Method Spread cream cheese over each Bellini, place a small amount of salmon on each one and a few capers for colour. Season with cracked black pepper. Before serving, sprinkle with the zest of a lemon and chives.

Zucchini a plenty There is plenty of zucchini around at the moment and there are many ways to use them.

They can be boiled, grilled, stuffed and baked, barbecued, fried or incorporated in other recipes including cakes and slices.

In Greece and Italy they are fried quickly in a thin batter and served simply with aioli and a

Baked Zucchini Dolmades Ingredients 1cup Arborio rice 1/4 cup Olive oil 2-3 cups of veggie stock 1 small onion, chopped Small squeeze of fresh garlic Salt and pepper 1/2 cup chopped toasted hazelnuts 2tbsp parmesan 1tbsp butter Six small zucchini 1tsp of white sugar

Method Wash and scoop out the flesh from the zucchini so you have a decent sized cavity without leaving shell too thin. Chop up the pulp

lemon wedge as a starter or part of a mezzeh. The lighter coloured Mediterranean variety has similar flavour to the dark skin variety we get here, except I found it a bit drier and easier to brown if frying.

The Greeks loved to cook them slowly in amazing vegetarian dishes like vegetarian briam or filled and baked like this week’s recipe – stuffed zucchini dolmade.

Zucchini are best eaten small before the seeds harden up and turn to a marrow – which reminds

and reserve. In a heavy pan, saute the onion for a minute or so in a little of the olive oil then remove.

Add the rice, then the chopped pulp then add the onion back in slowly. Add some of the stock, stirring the rice to prevent sticking.

Squeeze in the garlic and add more stock as it gets absorbed, cook for about 20 minutes.

Add the butter, parmesan and chopped hazelnuts.

Brush hollowed out zucchini with olive oil, sprinkle with just a touch of sugar and fill with risotto – which can be made a little sloppy by adding more stock.

Arrange in a baking dish and cover with rest of olive oil, season well with salt and pepper and sprinkle with parmesan. Cover dish with foil and bake for about 90 minutes in an oven set on 140-150 degrees. Uncover and brown at 200 degrees for a few minutes.

The slow cooking will prevent the zucchini bursting and concentrate the flavour (that is the secret for this week).

Builder’s new project stolen What should have been a celebration as a young student finishing his renovated vehicle, has turned into a sad story after the car was stolen Monday night.

The VL Commodore 1987, belonging to Bay of Plenty Polytechnic student Ethan Duncan, was last seen on Monday, January 23 just before 11.30pm.

His mother, Vicky Gillespie, says the car was locked up and sitting in the

driveway of their home in Ridge Street, Otumoetai. All Ethan’s building tools and tool belt were also inside the car.

Vicky says the car has no defining features except its beautiful metallic burgundy paint job and brand new mags. The licence plate reads NK8008.

Recapturing cinema history The Capitol Cinema was the heart of Te Puke in the 1960s.

The more things change, the more they stay A major restoration job 12 years ago brought the Capitol the same. You could certainly say that for Te Cinema back into the Te Puke Puke’s Capitol Cinema and the streetscape community’s heart, after being along Te Puke’s Jellicoe Street. closed for 22 years. Photo: Bruce Barnard But this was not always the case with the cinema closed and neglected for 22 years.

In 2000, the building, which had been used for everything from storing kiwifruit bins to discount sales, was bought by Ross and Evelyn Trebilco, who set about returning it to its original condition and purpose.

After starting off as a hall in 1917, the venue screened its first talking movie in April 1930.

By August, the building was officially called Capitol Theatre and so began the grand tradition that the Trebilco’s set about restoring.

Working with a heritage architect, the Trebilco’s began putting everything back together from the floor up, including repainting the Capitol Cinema in exactly the right colours and typeface.

The long list of work they needed to do on the neglected building included putting in a new roof and ceiling, fixing the floor, installing new seats, cinema screen and projector. A mural of the renowned Pink and White Terraces, which dates from the cinema’s early years, has been lovingly restored in the foyer.

Ross says while it could have been cheaper to build a new theatre, they would not have had the satisfaction of restoring an icon of the area.

From hosting the 1945 Victory in Japan Day Ball, through holding many community events and debutante balls, the cinema has long been close to the heart of Te Puke.

Ross says they are trying to continue this by upgrading and improving cinema technology.

The third step is to work out who the influencers are in the buying process – be it the administrator assistant who books the business travel you offer or the children who cajole parents to get takeaways.

Armed with these insights, your marketing must focus on satisfying the influencers.

To achieve your potential sales, you need to remove barriers to sales. Any issue that puts potential customers off buying – the time it takes to buy, the complexity or lack of certainty – needs to be addressed in marketing so that barrier is removed.

The fifth step is the continual monitoring of the marketplace and competitors so you are not left behind.

But this commitment to keep learning is helping her compete.

Keeping in touch with what competitors are doing is one of the golden rules the marketing and website consultant gives to her clients. In today’s fast-changing marketplace, she says it is critical to keep in touch with what your competitors are doing.

Michelle gives the analogy of a business being an island surrounded by other islands. If you are not keeping in touch with what your neighbours are doing, they can build a bridge and

take your customers. The most common marketing mistake she sees businesses make is failing to verify demand in the marketplace before going ahead with the business idea. This is the first – and arguably most important step – in a series of five steps Michelle recommends for marketing success. “I think anything you do in business should always start with the business opportunity, with what the market is looking for.”

She says even the sharpest marketing tactics – such as slick advertising campaigns – will not lead to sales if there is no client demand to begin with.

Once you have established there is a market, you need to learn about the customer profile – their demographic, geography, taste and behaviours – so you can pitch to them in a way they will respond to.

To find these answers, the business needs to undertake some market research, but Michelle says this does not need to be an overly-complicated process. “You can just start off by dipping your toe in and get-

Council back in the fray Welcome to council 2012. It is back in full swing spending this week completing the draft 3/10 Year Plan to go out for your consultation.

Financial inroads are being made into the first cut, but there’s still a long way to go before the final cut by June.

Problem is still the same old story – too much left to do at the end of ratepayers’ capacity to pay. Plus there’s still too much fat left in the system.

The way this goes, in my view, is that there is ‘this much budget for any given year’ so ‘that’s the base for next year’.

But the work that needs doing in a lot of cases is not the same.

Zero based budgeting was tried many years ago, but didn’t succeed principally because, in my opinion again, the staff of the day didn’t want it to.

It involved a lot of extra work and was far too transparent.

To be fair, there is a need for some contingency budget in council’s accounts for those thousand and one items that crop up unexpectedly during the year.

Water systems solid

Water services staff gave a comprehensive overview of our city water systems this week.

It’s as good as we sensibly can afford with two new reservoirs planned for the next six years.

At any given time there is three-four days capacity available.

Water metering in Tauranga has saved ratepayers into the many millions by reducing wastage and thus delaying an expensive new plant.

Just a look’s no good

The saga of the Matapihi rail bridge walkway continues. Staff were proposing a $600,000 replacement, even though the rail bridge itself was on a limited life span.

Some elected members had a look at it and called for a review of the need for replacement for the walkway.

It transpires that the consultant’s report was also only a visual inspection – whoop de doo. Anyone can look and speculate.

There is some work needed on the mesh fencing, handrail and bracing, but until the boardwalk is lifted to inspect the steel supports, no-one knows what should really be done.

Staff quoted in their recommendation “the high risk to council” without saying what that risk was and why.

Most unsatisfactory and council consequently included a much reduced $50,000 for extra work pending a proper report.

Railways are responsible for the steelwork under the contractual arrangements made when the walkway was built.

Council to compete

The crematorium operation came under scrutiny consequent to news Legacy Funerals are building their own which will take 37 per cent of business away from council.

There are 1090 crematoriums budgeted in the current year at $430 each.

There can be no ratepayer subsidy in this and council needs to now compete.

First thing is to move the discussion about how to do this in confidential.

I said that discussing this business in open is not the best way of doing business.

Legacy doesn’t tell council what it is doing.

The power of publicity

Tourism Bay of Plenty came along asking for $600,000 extra to make good the negative publicity from media reports on Rena.

Interesting proposal isn’t it.

Negative headline news on the front page, unpaid for, in prime public view, while on the inside pages a positive advertisement (paid for by ratepayers) saying it’s really okay. Which it is! But getting the message out in the face of all the negativity is

pushing water uphill with a rake. Council declined the proposal, but will work to get funding from other sources including the ship owners, charterers and insurers.

After all we, every New Zealander, are the victims of this.

City centre to have university

An interesting and lengthy presentation from the University of Waikato proposing council grant a 33-year lease, at no cost, to enable them to build a staged university campus in Durham Street.

It’s presently a leased carpark. Government won’t help when it comes to capital expenditure like land and buildings purchase.

So council is first cab off the rank.

Ratepayers put up the land, the benefactors like charitable trusts put up money for the buildings, students pay their fees and government/taxpayers put up the balance for the operational expenditure.

The proposal was accepted unanimously.

The university will populate the CBD with 500 more students and associated people (like staff ).

Existing revenue streams from car parking will be retained – parking will be part of the building – and they will pay rates.

It’s another part of this council’s determination to help people help themselves.

Interesting that time and again it’s the land cost that kills projects.

With the cost of building and operating soaring the land becomes the fly in the ointment.

This happens in residential housing and in my opinion is caused in part by introducing artificial boundaries which limit land supply.

Flood frustration

Over the Christmas break the Historic Village flooded yet again. This is in spite of significant and expensive stormwater prevention works completed recently.

It’s not official, but I understand a wooden shutter that enables eels to swim up the drain got jammed open by a piece of wood allowing stormwater back up the drain.

Accidental?

You would hope so, but a couple of days later someone checked the shutter and there was another piece of wood jamming in it again – but no flood. The shutter is now checked regularly.

Food Safety regulations Greater transparency needed

What’s up, Doc? I’ve recently returned to live back home in New Zealand after many years abroad and some of the doctors charges have me a bit bemused.

Friends in the Tauranga area seem to be paying about $31 to $39 per visit, friends in the Waihi Beach area tell me they are paying about $26-$28 per visit and astonishingly a friend in Takanini smugly tells me he pays $17.50 per visit.

What’s going on?

D. Lawrence, Otumoetai Response from the Ministry of Health: The Government does not directly determine the fees GPs charge their patients. Most GPs in New Zealand are private businesses and retain the right to set their own charges.

However, the Government funds the Very Low Cost Access (VLCA) programme to improve access to primary healthcare. Practices choose whether or not to operate under the VLCA programme.

This programme provides additional funding to practices in return for them agreeing to keep their fees at, or below, a maximum level set by the Government.

The maximum fee for practices in this programme is currently $11.50 for children 6 to 17 years old and $17 for enrolled adults 18 years and over.

These charges are not linked to the Community Service Card, but apply to all patients enrolled with the practice.

The Bay of Plenty District Health Board provides a list of all General Practice prices on their website.

Thank you for your article on the above. I wonder how many people are actually aware of the implications of this bill going through. Inspite of what Kate Wilkinson says it is once again an intrusion by the government into our lives as citizens of this country.

The government already regulates our lives for “our own good” by turning it into a nanny state and we should stop being sheeples by allowing it! Thank goodness for people like Jodie Bruning for bringing it to the fore. The home veggie gardener and small growers who sell their produce at farmers markets are in danger of being regulated to the extent that they simply give up.

Similar legislation was passed in the US and there have already been many prosecutions against farmers and people growing vegetables in their own gardens.

So we are not alone in this worldwide drive to have only registered commercial enterprises control our food supply for our own “safety”.

Why would we give ANYONE the power to intrude our privacy and search our property without search warrants?

The potential to criminalise home food production will forever be present if this bill is passed even though the intent appears innocent at this stage.

I totally support Andrew von Dadelszen`s column (13 Jan) in which he calls for greater transparency during settlement of the Tauranga Moana Treaty claims. A settlement of 150 million is being waived around (with probably about $50m in cash). I feel as citizens of New Zealand paying taxes we have a right to know exactly what this large sum of money is for, and as for the cash settlement, what are local Maori going to use it for?

There is also the grave question of what is exactly meant by “co-governance of our harbour and waterways.”

Argh, spin the pirate tales I get continually more confused by this issue of piracy on the old interweb, especially now that New Zealand has hit the international news.

That the media jumped on the police side after the arrest of Kim Dotcom was hardly a surprise.

Now we have Winston Peters leaping aboard the bandwagon, which should be a warning to everyone.

It reminds me of a couple of things. The first is Tiki Taane’s arrest last year while performing at a Tauranga nightclub.

Many over-the-top utterances were uttered.

Simon Bridges labelled the singer “a disgrace” and was quoted as saying: “I’d hope we never see Tiki Taane in Tauranga again.”

All charges were later dropped, though I didn’t notice any follow-up about Mr Bridges issuing a formal apology.

Now Kim Dotcom and his Megaupload pals have been busted in Auckland under orders from the FBI. The PR spin is already at full speed. Early reports hinted at the danger the suspects posed by announcing that Mr Dotcom had a gun “close at hand”.

The fact that it was in a gun safe has been less widely mentioned.

Good old Winston has quickly attacked the immigration issue.

How could this man have come here if he had a criminal conviction?

Well the convictions were old and considered very minor by the German government (that well-known bastion of tolerance), so they were wiped under their clean-slate provision.

Immigration here knew about them, but also considered them too minor to be important.

Winston has a valiant record of protecting us against evil foreigners, so I don’t expect him to shut up in a hurry.

Remember Ahmed Zaoui? Peters railed against the dangerous terrorist for years and his one man crusade was probably responsible for keeping the asylum-seeker in jail for an extra couple of years.

Then he was let out and… nothing happened. Turns out Winnie’s crusade might have been a little, er, overenthusiastic.

Or, as the cynical might suggest, pure political opportunism.

It might pay to remember that as he hoes into Kim Dotcom.

It’s also worth noting that not everyone the FBI accuses are guilty, especially in the vexed and confused area of internet copyright infringement.

And especially in cases where, like this one, the accusation is of providing the means for people to do illegal things as opposed to actu-

ally doing them.

Many legitimate users who had paid for the service and were storing or sharing totally legal material through Megaupload now find themselves innocent victims of the FBI action.

Surely coincidentally the raid happened just as SOPA, the draconian new proposed crackdown on internet users, was hitting some significant opposition in America.

And, before demonising the (innocent until proven guilty) suspects, I couldn’t help notice that, as well as investing a massive amount of money in government bonds, Mr Dotcom gave about $500,000 to put on a fireworks display over Auckland in 2010 for New Year’s Eve, donated a significant sum to the Christchurch Earthquake appeal and donated $90,000 to the Starship Foundation. If I had to pick between him and Winston…

But the internet, as well as being a danger to everyone, apparently, also allows us to get free music. That’s the weird contradiction.

The Guardian newspaper’s online edition (guardian.co.uk) has been streaming Leonard Cohen’s new album, not due for release until 30 January.

There it is, in great quality, just waiting to be listened to. And, presumably, it could be copied by anyone with the right software.

Is The Guardian encouraging illegal behaviour?

The whole copyright issue is vexing to say the least.

For instance, there is some obscure provision that allows for live recordings to move into the public domain after 35 years.

I’m not sure which countries this applies to but with the internet it hardly matters any more.

What it means is that some very interesting stuff is now turning up on Amazon, presumably legally or it wouldn’t be there.

I’ve been revelling in Bruce Springsteen’s legendary live 1975 show from Main Point, and there are now more live CDs being released from the same era.

It’s a funny old world.

Dir: Andre Ovredal. Starring: Otto Jespersen, Robert Stoltenberg, Knut Nærum There’s something very appealing about eccentrically grand follies (and I’m not using that word in a pejorative sense): a unique idea, absolutely pointless, but carried out with great style. That’s pretty much where Trollhunter sits. It’s a small silly film with one central joke, but it turns its tricks with such style and enthusiasm that it’s hard not to like it.

It’s a Norwegian film, yet another purporting to be ‘lost footage’ (see Blair Witch, Cloverfield et al), in which three student filmmakers stumble across a grizzled old hunter who slowly reveals You can’t really call it a series because there’s no developing story. Instead this is the fourth identikit remake, Final Destination 5 , now in unsubtle throw-stuff-at-the-camera 3D. If only the three-dimensionality extended to the characters, a bunch of young stereotypes who escape death (this time in an – admittedly spectacular – suspension bridge collapse) only to be picked off in elaborately-staged, red herring-filled death scenes. Vibrating sounds of the Father's unconditional love are all around us. I recently spent a month living in a rural location. It brought back memories of my childhood.

To hear the sound of sheep and cows grazing on green grass, roosters crowing along with over excited chucks clucking and Tui chirping out their beautiful love song was extremely recharging for the soul.

The Holy Spirit in the church There is a wide-range of convictions regarding the Ministry of the Holy Spirit in the church today.

The position often taken is a middle ground between two extremes.

At one end of the spectrum is extreme-conservatism that denies that the gifts of the spirit are for today and which sees no place for the Holy Spirit in Christian life and ministry.

At the other extreme is what has been called charismania or extreme-pentecostalism which sees any manifestation as being from the Holy Spirit and signs and wonders and experiences are vigorously pursued.

Four things are important for us to lay hold of if we are to see the fullness of the Ministry of the Holy Spirit today.

Firstly, truth is not held in tension between two extremes – truth is settled in God’s word and it is forever settled in heaven.

Truth concerning the Holy Spirit in life and ministry today is not found by choosing middle ground between unbiblical extremes.

Our convictions and our expectation must be based on what the scriptures declare.

Secondly, we need to understand that the Holy Spirit is the operative, functioning member of the Trinity in the earth.

The son is seated in the heavenlies at the right hand of the Father, having sent the Holy Spirit in His place (John 16:7).

Jesus is Lord over the church while the Holy Spirit is Lord in the church and Jesus’ lordship over the church is effective to the measure that the Holy Spirit is Lord in the church.

Thirdly, we need to know what the scriptures teach concerning the nature and the character of the Holy Spirit so as to walk in truth concerning His ministry in our lives and in the church.

Importantly, we need to know that He is the Holy Spirit, that His nature and character and ministry are characterised by holiness.

Anything that is unholy, irreverent, silly, coarse, ugly, flippant, insensitive, self-assertive, self-exalting or stupid does not proceed from the Holy Spirit.

Fourthly, signs and wonders neither guarantee nor determine truth. Truth is established and unchanging in God’s word (John 17:17).

Keeping within the boundaries There’s been plenty going on for this newshound to sniff out this week.

However, this newhound’s nose only sniffs as far as the boundary fence, since the boss installed a fancy new invisible fence that keeps me well contained.

He called Max from Collartron the other day and Max gave me a flashy new collar which picks up a signal from a wire running right around the property, under the driveway, dangerously close to the compost bin, and under the lawn. If I get too close to the wire, I get a little warning beep which is usually enough to remind me that the boundary is out of bounds. If I keep getting closer, the collar gives me a wee electric tingle that sends me packing back home.

It’s been working so well that the boss has taken down the temporary puppy fence and I can have an unobstructed view of my friends walking by the front yard. Of course I have to communicate from a distance, a sort of canine semaphore; because I’m not silly enough to be tempted close.

They can come and see me though.

I figured it all out after only a couple of err, corrections, now it’s almost comforting to know that I have boundaries, even if I can’t see them – I certainly know where they are!

Now I sit on the deck and watch the puzzled looks on my friends faces as they go by; wondering why I’m not bounding out after them.

Can’t wait for Ady to visit and check it out. We might pop the collar on her and see how that goes!

Nothing like giving the German a bit of discipline. Payback is a bitch. So am I, for thinking devious thoughts. But them I am a bitch.

Meanwhile, I’ve been enjoying the odd day in Absolutely Precious Paws “doggy daycare”. Wendy the dog trainer will be impressed with some of the stuff I’ve picked up there – more about that in coming stories.

Meanwhile, keep your faces out of the milk powder bags and give the penguins a break. They’ve had enough to contend with in the ocean this summer, without nosy pooches getting in their faces.

No trend for February rainfall Rainfalls for the month of February have been recorded in Tauranga since 1898 (except for 1904,1908,and 1909).

The graph show the range of rainfalls from a high of 343 mm in 1936 to a low of 7 mm in 1973. The long-term average rainfall for Tauranga for February is 90 mm. The graph show no significant overall trend in the rainfalls in February over the last 110 years apart from a small decrease the average rainfall from 95 mm in the 50 years ending in 1960 to 86 mm in the 50 years to 2010.

Since 1898 there have been 11 February months with rainfall of 200 mm or more, and 15 February months with a rainfall of more than double the average. In contrast, 10 February months have had rainfall of 10 mm or less, including both 2010 and 2011.
