Of course the wise folk choose resolutions that are easy to ignore, or build in some exemptions, so that when we undoubtedly fail to follow through, it can all be justified.

Just like being in government, but without the stash of other people’s money to spend.

It’s been a cool time with the family heading into summer, and we’ve been enjoying some lively conversations with the grandchildren who are growing up faster than granny’s broad beans.

One discussion, after yet another hearty lunch, centred on polite eating behaviour in different cultures. Then a Google session to discover the strangest customs and habits from around the world. Starting of course with belching, which is considered polite in China, India and Islamic countries, as a sign that the meal was enjoyed and was plentiful.

It’s reported the Saudis let rip after a feed, as a compliment to the chef.

However, it doesn’t go down so well around the dinner table at granny’s.

One of the youngsters pointed out that Indians eat with their hands because they believe a meal is more than food; it nourishes the mind, intellect and spirit. Eating with your hands apparently, gives you “connection with the food”. It’s considered the least violent way to eat. Clearly they’ve never seen Uncle Tony attack a hamburger.

Double dipping

Then the subject arose of double dipping, just as the nephews were demolishing a bread selection and heading for the dhukka. It was agreed that double dipping was frowned upon in most cultures, except perhaps at Mayor Brown’s parties.

Leaving some tucker on your plate is polite in some countries, signifying you’ve eaten sufficiently. While in others, such as India, you should clean the plate as grain is so highly valued, not one should be left.

The well-travelled in the family tell me that in some areas of the Middle East, Cambodia and Philippines, it is more polite to leave a little food on your plate.

An empty plate might suggest your hosts didn’t serve enough, causing insult to them.

Google tells us that in Hong Kong and Japan, loudly slurping your noodles shows your enjoyment, that it is so delicious you cannot even wait until it cools off.

The Germans are precision diners, of course. They use a knife and fork for virtually everything. But with one notable exception. Never cut your potato with a knife, instead use the edge of the fork.

Using the knife implies it is not cooked tender enough.

Oral origami

And the French have some odd practices with salads; folding lettuce leaves into a sort of package over your fork. It’s believed that cutting bruises the delicate greens.

Chopsticks raise a whole episode of dos and don’ts, which we won’t even try to serve justice to today.

The RDA volunteer noticed the addresses in the rubbish when clearing the dumped rubbish.

Since then, he’s tracked down one of the named people to an Anne Rd, Otumoetai, address, and turned up and tossed the rubbish onto the drive, telling the residents he’s returning their property.

The rubbish includes a clothes dryer, collapsed cardboard boxes, rubbish and paper work – with the names and addresses of two people with the same surname.

“I’m just returning your property,” he told the bemused Anne Rd residents. They say the man whose name is on the rubbish was only staying there, because he was injured. Rubbish dumping is an ongoing issue for the Western Bay of Plenty District Council, which

sees random dumpings occur frequently on the district’s rural roads.

Statistics for the last three months show 70 instances of illegal dumping in the Western Bay. If a staff member had to visit these sites it would equate to more than one visit per day during a five day working week, says WBPDC’s Kim Rahiri.

Where possible, a solid waste technician endeavours to visit the dumping sites to try and source evidence so appropriate action can be taken, says Kim. Actions include returning the rubbish to the address found within the waste with a warning of a possible infringement notice.

If it cannot be returned, due to volume or content, a letter is forwarded to the address linked to the rubbish explaining penalties and fines.

If sufficient evidence is available Council’s compliance team will issue infringement notices and if proof beyond doubt exists, prosecution under the Litter Act is an option.

The maximum fine is $500.

Carding the over-indulgers Top Bay news stories of 2013 Flooding, car crashes, P-labs exploding and anything to do with the weather are among the top news stories for SunLive readers this year.

As we head into the new year, SunLive decided to collate some of the most viewed stories on Sun Media’s website ranked in the top five in New Zealand.

The most viewed stories for the year were the breaking news events happening close to home and affecting residents living within the Western Bay of Plenty.

At the top of the list is the tragic death of Tauranga electrician Greg Woledge who died when his van crashed off the Maungatapu Bridge.

Flooding that hit the area in April was followed closely by readers with many sending in their own photos and experiences here.

Natural disasters and astronomical phenomenon came in the middle of the field with many people tuning in to read about the overdue solar superstorm and the Waikato/BOP Magic’s win.

Even animal lovers got a look in with the annual ribbon parade for dogs among the top 20 stories of this year. Crashes, smashes and speeches that were “train crashes” also kept readers busy checking the site.

A decision to issue ‘yellow cards’ to people showing signs of bad drinking behaviour is paying dividends, despite a rough introduction period, according to one Mount Maunganui bar owner.

For the last three years, a handful of Mount Maunganui bars have been promoting a yellow card system, which sees patrons’ drinking limits toned down in an attempt to prolong their time at the bar.

Hospitality New Zealand Bay of Plenty chairman Clayton Mitchell says the carding system, taking a leaf out of the sporting playbook, is beginning to make its mark following initial rejection.

When a patron is issued with a yellow card, staff are informed and the person is no longer served shots or ‘short’ drinks – instead, being topped up with water or soft drink. If they are issued two yellows, they are escorted from the premises.

Clayton admits the rollout of the cards was not pretty to begin with, saying in hindsight bars were a little heavy handed on the dishing out of the cards – causing some anger.

“People were taking offence to how we were monitoring their drinking or controlling it.

“This is the intervention before we get to remove you.

“It shows signs that the levels you are drinking at are too high; and you need to slow down and have a water.”

The concept followed on from Canterbury’s use of the cards in a similar play on sporting references, with some minor adjustments, says Nigel.

“They would get a yellow and then a red card and they were out. They had to be careful, as people would strive for the red and keep them as a trophy.”

With the festive season in full swing, Clayton says this is typically a time of high consumption because people generally have

two or three social events in a week or in a row – leaving a higher level of alcohol in their system.

But a social change is seeing people taking personal responsibility and asking for the yellow cards as a way to keep each other in check when they are out on the town.

“The moral of the story; people are responsible for their own actions. This is a way for people managing their own selves, because we as a society have stepped away from personal responsibility,” says Clayton.

“It is prevention, by way of intervention.”

The Black Seeds’ vibe Cover story

Get ready to party as The Black Seeds hit town for the inaugural Mount Vibes New Year’s festival at ASB Baypark next week.

Front man Barnaby Weir says the Wellington-based reggae band are hoping to rock the New Year stage at the R18 festival with a mixture of old classics and new sounds ahead of their sixth studio album.

“We are really looking forward to it – kicking off the New Year in a fine style and the talent on the day is going to make for a really cool show – we are really amped for it.”

It’s the first summer headlining gig the group has played in the Bay in a few years, but the band has a long history with the beachside town.

“In the early days we played gigs at Brewers and later on we played on the grass outside the oval. This is a bigger event than what we played there last time.”

The Black Seeds will headline a 17-strong line-up, which includes top NZ bands Aaradhna, I Am Giant, Blacklistt,

Sons of Zion and Homebrew.

“It’s quite diverse, and there is definitely something for everyone. If you like your rock or metal, reggae flavours and a bit of hip hop thrown in there,” says Barnaby. The Black Seeds are currently working on their sixth studio album, a follow-up to 2012’s Dust and Dirt.

“Lately we have been playing some songs from all of our albums instead of just the last Dust and Dirt.

We have this good flow on, playing a bit of older stuff and more of a mixture.”

Mount Vibes organiser Morgan Dynes says tickets are selling fast as the gig approaches with thousands expected for the festival.

“We knew there was a need for this in Tauranga.

It’s going to be a good show.”

The event is inside the Baypark Stadium on December 31, with overnight camping available for up to 2500 people. In the main stadium will be the Smirnoff Stage with two big screen televisions for the audience to view. The Coruba Stage will be inside ASB Arena. The doors open at 3pm, with the first band starting at 4pm, and will run through until 12.30am on January 1.

25th iron effort Shane Lye is looking forward to battling another Port of Tauranga Half Ironman on January 4.

Tauranga builder Shane Lye likes a good challenge. It’s kept him lining up for almost every Port of Tauranga Half Ironman since the event began and he’ll be lining up for one more on January 4.

Shane sports an almost perfect start record in the Mount’s annual January race – having raced in every event since it started 24 years ago except the year his daughter was born just days earlier.

“I wanted to do it but I knew I wouldn’t be very popular at home,” he says. Another year he started but was forced to withdraw early.

“I had been sick all week, but I started it because I didn’t want to jeopardise my record,” he says with a self-deprecating chuckle.

“At the end of the ride I could see I was being stupid. I decided it wasn’t worth it.”

Shane’s a modest man, finishing his sentences with a chuckle whenever he feels he’s blowing his own trumpet.

Now 50, he has completed about 40 half ironman - saying the distance suits him -along with

eight iron man events.

Over the years there have been many highlights, including representing the country four times between the mid-1990s and 2000s.

“It was great. I’ve been overseas quite a few times and took off two years to race from 1999-2001.”

In those days he trained 25-30 hours a week, a figure which has slipped back to five-10 hours.

“I still love participating, but it’s more social racing.”

Other highlights have included beating top pro athletes, good friends he has made and encouraging others into the sport – including coaching a group of under 12 year olds during the last two years.

More recently he was happy to have made third place in his age group in the New Zealand Aquathon Champs at Pilot Bay – which qualifies him for the World Aquathon Champs in Edmonton, Canada in August next year.

For now his focus is on his 25th Port of Tauranga Half Ironman, where he aims to complete the 2km swim, 90km bike and half marathon run in less than five hours.

Shared building being explored The idea of a shared building for the Tauranga Fire Station and the Western Bay Moana Rural Fire Authority is being

explored following a suggestion from the New Zealand Fire Service.

Low has confirmed Graeme Easton, from the NZFS, outlined an intention by the fire service to upgrade the Tauranga fire station on Cameron Rd; and has sought an expression of interest for the rural fire authority to co-locate with the Tauranga brigade.

Barry says the suggestion came up at a September meeting; and it was resolved that a full report on the implications of such a co-location be prepared and provided to the WBMRFA committee.

“Colocation is under consideration,” he says.

“The authority’s management committee, which represents it users, will look into it – and I will work with whatever decision is made,” says Barry.

Preparing for beachhead invasion Life’s a holiday for Mark Hales – but don’t expect to see him relaxing to much during the next month.

Mark, the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park manager, is already in the middle of the holiday rush as he prepares the iconic camping ground, at the base of Mauao, for an onslaught of visitors with the camp almost fully booked all January.

While others have been focused on their Christmas shopping, Mark and his 10-member team has been hard at work during the last few weeks preparing the park for the 500 visitors they’ll have staying almost every

Classic surf battle begins While holiday crowds fill the Mount beaches in hunt of sunshine, surf and sand – a starstudded line-up of surf lifesavers will do battle in the annual New World Omanu Classic on Sunday.

The highly anticipated event sees about 50 surf lifesavers compete in a full range of board, ski, swim and boat events – in a fast-paced afternoon carnival.

And as with previous years, all eyes will be on the feature race of day; the Ian Porteous Memorial Ironman, with its distinctive ‘M’ shaped course and a proud history of producing outstanding winners. in 1995, Omanu stalwart Ian Porteous died suddenly, one day before the club’s annual long-distance carnival. So, his great mate and fellow clubbie Denny Enright decided the 1996 event would be

an ideal tribute – and the event has grown since.

Speaking ahead of the event, Omanu Surf Club competition and coaching director Koenraad Groot says they event has an impressive field this year, including New Zealand ironman champion Max Beattie, Gisborne prodigy Cory Taylor and a strong Mount contingent.

Fresh from last weekend’s inaugural Mount Monster 25km endurance race, Max is looking to defend his ironman title in this year’s Omanu Classic, after lifting the prestigious trophy for the first time in 2012.

Koenraad adds there is an extra hint of rivalry building between home favourite Max and Mount Maunganui’s Andrew Newton,

who took out the Whangamata Ironman earlier this month.

“It’s a difficult course because rounding the buoy can change everything. Max is the favourite – but with surf life saving and waves, anything can happen,” says Koenraad.

“You haven’t just got one hard leg and then a run; you have to round the mark and then have another hard leg.”

If Max does successfully defend the title he’ll become just the second competitor to win the race two years in a row, joining Aaron Jarman, who achieved 1995 and 1996 victories.

Other impressive names on the trophy include Andrew Newton, surf life saving legend Cory Hutchings and Matt Sutton.

“We’ve been busy getting the grounds ready, doing the mowing and all of the maintenance, so it’s all done,” says Mark, preparing for an influx that begins this Friday, December 20.

Boxing Day remains the busiest day of arrivals, with the camp reaching capacity on the day – but this year, a lot of campers are coming early, says Mark.

Working at the camp for eight years, he knows many of the regular campers and looks forward to seeing familiar faces.

“We’ve got a huge history in our client base. We have some people who’ve been coming here for 60 years. We even have one couple who met here when they were

kids – and they’ve kept coming back with their family.”

Regulars all have their favourite spots at the 234-site park and enjoy catching up with their holiday neighbours, says Mark. “It’s part of the holiday experience”.

While most visitors come from throughout the Waikato and Auckland, some come from as far as Wellington – while a few just travel a couple blocks from the Mount.

Mark estimates Western Bay campers account for about five per cent of guests. “A lot of them have said to me they couldn’t think of a better place than camping by one of the world’s best beaches.”

Pride, passion and double points go on the line next weekend for Mount Maunganui volleyball pairing Mike Watson and Sam O’Dea, as the annual Mount Grand Slam unfolds.

On December 27 and 28, teams will take to the sand in the hopes of gaining last minute points for entry into the Pro Tour series next year.

For Mike and Sam – fresh from a stint in Brisbane, Australia – they’re yet to compete in a New Zealand tournament together.

“So it’s pretty vital for us to get some points going into the national tour. We’ll definitely be looking to get a good result,” says Mike.

Both regular faces in the volleyball scene, the pair is confident they can impress this weekend.

“We’ve been working very hard, training very hard, so we think we’re in good shape.”

The Grand Slam always draws a large crowd – something Mike says sets the tone for the national tour and always amps them up.

“It’s always a good one to be a part of because there’s that holiday crowd around.”

Sport Bay of Plenty volleyball coachforce officer Edwin O’Dea says grand slams are more important than other events for competitive teams.

“The teams are playing for points, there is a little bit of prize money; but mainly it’s the points to get ranking and seating placing into the Pro Tour event.

“With grand slams, there is double points up for grabs; and there are only three each year. It’s also the last tournament before the Pro Tour, so it’s the last chance for teams to get points.”

While some popular teams miss this event because of its proximity to New Year’s Eve, Edwin says the two local teams to watch out for are Mike and Sam, along with Griffin Muller and Pora Morunga.

“Those two are probably the best teams from around here, who will make the semis or finals.”

To catch the action, be at Mount Maunganui Main Beach today (December 27) and Saturday (December 28).

Te Puke history brought back to life One of Te Puke’s oldest buildings is back in business, following a near decade-long restoration project.

Plans to renovate the No 2 Road Hall began in early 2006, with the creation of a hall committee that began fundraising for the estimated $350,000 required.

Built by early settlers in 1882 for 303 pounds, the No 2 Road Hall (as it was then called), was originally meant to be the centre of the Te Puke township, says hall trustee Steve Vercoe.

“But the railway couldn’t come up the road this far, because of the gorges, so the town’s

centre was relocated.”

Now a registered historic building with the NZ Historic Places Trust, it was previously used as a school, community hall, and a church.

NZHPT records the hall’s first wedding took place in 1885, and it was used as a school from 1907-1956.

After more than 100 years, the building was left vacant, run down and a genuine eye sore.

In October 2006, a committee dedicated to saving and restoring the building on the original site was formed.

“It was deserving of a match,” says Steve. “When we started going around for donations, two people actually got back to

us with a box of matches and said here’s my donation.”

By 2011, about $300,000 had been raised and work began on the renovations.

The corrugated iron roof was replaced with shingles and the front entrance restored to a single centre doorway.

The rimu lining inside the hall was removed and the ceiling restored; the inside walls are now kauri.

“It’s definitely not an eyesore now,” says Steve – who says raising the funds, and completing renovations, was a real community effort.

“It feels really good to have it finished though. It’s looking really good and we’ve had lots of great comment from the public.”

The building is now awaiting its final compliance. With a licence for 50 people, Steve hopes it will be used for weddings and special occasions, such as family reunions.

“We have spent a lot of time and effort, so we want it to be kept for special things.”

The project was initiated in by committee chair Jim Pendergrass, who has written a book ‘’ on the hall’s history. An open day for the public is at the hall on Sunday afternoon, December 22.

Speed, adrenaline and fun – Te Puke’s Tristan Hynds says he quickly found there is something addictive about racing jet boats when he got his first boat 11 years ago.

Even before he knew there is an actual V8 Jetsprints competition, he was doing it himself, tearing along the Kaituna River, ripping around corners with a tail of jet spray behind him.

About four years ago he decided it was time to get serious with his racing and get involved in competitive V8 Jetsprints.

“I’d been watching it on TV and been to a few meetings as a spectator; and I just decided I had to get in amongst it,” says Tristan, who is excited about competing in front of his home crowd at ASB Baypark in January, in the country’s first jetsprint stadium event.

“It’s going to be great to able to compete in front of friends and family,” says Tristan, who is the only Western Bay competitor expected to take part in the races, being staged on a temporary circuit dug out in the stadium’s centre.

While excited about Baypark’s January 25 event the jetsprint newcomer is more focused on the first round of the national championship series in Wanganui on December 27, where he’ll race his new sprint boat for the first time in the second tier Group A class of 600plus horsepower boats.

“I’m as excited as a kid at Christmas. I’ve wanted to do this for a few years,” says Tristan, who has been saving up for the ideal top end boat.

“I wanted to have a boat that is going to be competitive,” says Tristan, who has had to limit practice to a few blasts on the Kaituna, because of problems with settings.

Enzed V8 Jetsprints at Baypark event organiser Pip Minnell says there is strong interest from the public, racers and sponsors, including Farmer Motor Group and she’s hoping for a sell-out crowd.

“It will appeal to boat and motoring enthusiasts with racers reaching top speeds of 125km/h,” says Pip.

All aboard the Pepi Toot for summer Lesley Smith’s dream of bringing the country’s first on-road passenger train to Mount Maunganui is now full steam ahead.

After a successful trial in October 2012, the 20-seater carriage and train, named Pepi Toot, has returned for the 2013/2014 cruise ship season.

Now, Lesley and her partner Charlie Davis, from Whitianga, say the train will be available every day in 2014.

“At the moment we come down every day there’s a cruise ship in,” says Charlie. “But we want to run it every day when we move [to the Mount].”

For Lesley, it’s a trip back to her hometown having lived in the Mount during her

primary school years.

“It’s a bit like coming home.

It’s not unfamiliar for me; Mount Maunganui and Tauranga.”

Lesley was holidaying in Noumea when she thought of bringing an on-road passenger train into the country.

“Because I’d first been on one off a cruise ship in Noumea, I thought well that’s the logical thing, to bring it down to the

He’s bowling them over

Blind bowler David Monk, helped by wife and ‘director’ Kath, has been nominated for the Halberg disabled sportsperson award.

It was a bolt from out of the blue for young David Monk – and he thought his life was essentially over.

He certainly didn’t expect to keep playing bowls when he received the shock diagnosis he had glaucoma and was losing his sight.

The diagnosis came 25 years ago. “I didn’t do very much for a while…and I certainly didn’t think I would take up bowls again.”

But earlier this year he claimed a

blind bowls world title, and has been named as a finalist at the annual Westpac Halberg Awards for the Disabled Sportsperson of the Year.

It follows a service to sport award he received at the recent Bay of Plenty Sports Awards, where he was also a finalist for the region’s Sportsman of the Year title.

David, 70, says while the recognition is nice, what really drives him is setting his own goals.

“It’s just a matter of getting stuck in, getting some help from family and friends and setting some goals.”

The Pyes Pa kiwifruit orchardist adapted to his declining sight, and through the Foundation for the Blind got involved in bowls and sailing.

“Most players have been bowlers before, but we do have a few who have never played,” says David who works with ‘director’ and wife Kath, who tells them how far away the jack is and describes the place of other bowls as if on a clock face.

Until about 10 years ago he also competed quite seriously in blind sailing, winning a silver medal at the world’s in Miami in 1999.

In December David claimed what he estimates is his 20th national title.

After years of involvement both on the green and behind the scenes at national and international executive committee level he is keen to remain involved –

and hopes to compete at his fifth world championships in four years’ time.

David also goes up against

sighted players at Gate Pa Bowls Club at least once a week.

The Halberg winners will be announced on February 13.

Broken back prompts love and business Juliette Yarrell’s pathway to Papamoa started over coffee at her Greenhithe cafe, when a meeting of common minds sparked a brand new direction for the mother-of-three.

With backbencher John Key and Kiwi entrepreneur Bill Smale discussing the state of New Zea-

land with Juliette, little did she know one idea would take her to Papamoa and a $46 million development project called Freedom Villages.

“One of the big issues we’d discuss is the lack of affordable quality lifestyle developments for the 50-plus market, especially for those affected by the Global Financial Crisis and failed finance companies. It is something we all felt so passionate about,” says Juliette.

“It is the changing social motives that tugged on David’s heart strings and secured his passionate input.

A season of fun and sun Like it or hate it, the season has arrived when Tauranga’s population bulges with life.

There are many events around the city catering to a variety of tastes. We’re fortunate people choose to spend their summer – and cash – in our city. To checkout what you need to know for summer in the Bay, visit: www.tauranga.govt.nz For as long as people continue to flock to Mount Main Beach for New Year’s Eve, I’ll continue to support council’s events programme. It provides a safer environment than if council did nothing. Not only is it a great opportunity to showcase the life of our city, but people might look for their own entertainment if it wasn’t provided in a fun and safe environment.

Routes not sirens

Early in December, council agreed to stop the tsunami sirens project. We learned from the

council’s previous process and findings from Japan’s earthquakes.

Good evacuation planning, public education and training exercises were more effective in saving lives in Japan than an official siren warning system. The sirens also create complacency, as people are reliant on official responses.

Our goal is to get the most people to safety and away from danger. I don’t believe sirens are the best way to achieve this. We’ve agreed to spend half the funding on securing pedestrian-friendly evacuation routes and signage, to get people to nearby elevated areas. In Japan, the cars quickly became a hazard when the roads became gridlocked.

We’re also focusing on building community resilience to civil defence events. The response to Christchurch’s earthquake was successful when neighbours

looked after each other until help arrived, which might have taken a couple of days.

New Year’s break

Council’s next formal meeting will be on January 28, 2014.

This is when we’ll discuss the full draft 2014/2015 budget. We may also get together informally beforehand, to ensure we have all of the information to reach good decisions. We’ve also been invited to various events, openings and shows throughout the city. The opening of the Bay Oval cricket pavilion at Blake Park on January 2 should be great, in preparation for 2015’s cricket world cup.

Burglary numbers down for this time of year While the number of reported burglaries in the Western Bay of Plenty is down for this time of the year, police are still warning people to be vigilant.

Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton says police are continuing to have a strong focus on prevention in the community.

“Whilst we experienced significant demands in the areas of dishonesty, particularly burglary and theft ex-car in the 2012/2013 fiscal period, we are not currently seeing the same demands in those areas.

“Together with the work our communities are doing, seems to be making a difference in these areas.”

Clifford says the community can assist police by installing and using good quality locks and by locking the front door if people are in the back garden or away from the front of the house.

People should also lock away garden tools and ladders, as burglars can use them to break in, says Clifford.

“Lock garden sheds and your garage if you can.

Ensure bikes, lawnmowers and other gardening equipment are secured out of sight.

“Also, keep trees and hedges trimmed, so good visibility is maintained of your house and gardens; and install sensor lights and ensure they are working.”

Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton warns people to keep their property locked away – from sticky-fingered criminals.

If people are going away, they should tell a neighbour when and where they are going, cancel their mail, paper and have someone clear their letter box, warns Clifford.

“At this time of the year, we have historically had a number of moped thefts principally from the Mount Maunganui area.

“We would ask moped owners and riders to ensure: the moped is parked out of sight when not in use, the ignition lock is used where available, a strong chain and lock is used to secure the moped, and the helmet is secured to the moped or removed out of sight.”

Swinging into action

The SkyCity Northern Knights are ready to set Mount Maunganui alight with sharp bowling and swashbuckling boundaries in two crucial matches of their 2013/2014 HRV Twenty20 campaign.

The men in pink, led by Bay of Plenty’s Daniel Flynn, will explode into action at Bay Oval by lining up against the Canterbury Wizards on Thursday, January 2; and then challenge the Wellington Firebirds on Saturday, January 4.

Already four matches into the 10-round campaign, the Knights lead the competition with three impressive victories ahead of the Otago Volts and Auckland Aces.

Speaking ahead of today’s game, Northern Knights coach James Pamment is pleased with the side’s opening performances, including bouncing back with two victories after a slight blip against the Otago Volts in Hamilton.

“We have made a reasonable start, but we will be looking to get the momentum back when we start again on the December 27 [against the Central Stags in Nelson].” James, who has been involved with Bay of Plenty Cricket since 2007, is excited to return to the

Bay to unleash some of New Zealand’s future stars in front of the holiday crowd – including Daryl Mitchell, Cam Fletcher and Scott Kuggeleijn.

“We have got some very exciting players who we know will be Black Caps of the future, so it’s a great opportunity for them to lead and perform in the heat of battle.

“A game of T20 is a spectacle for anyone, not just the cricket purist. When you look around the world, T20 is attracting people that you would not expect.”

But the final make-up of the side is yet to be determined for the T20 matches, due to seven Knights being unavailable thanks to Black Cap commitments, coupled with the loss of two star Australian imports Daniel Harris and Ben Laughlin.

The Australian pair was in commanding form during the first four rounds and head back across the Tasman while leading the most runs and wickets tables – Daniel with 169 runs and Ben 10 wickets. Both matches at the Bay Oval begin 4pm.

Rocking the Mount: New Year’s Eve plans It’s an annual tradition for thousands of young people – but this year there are even more reasons to celebrate New Year’s Eve at the Mount.

Tauranga City Council event manager Penny Mitropoulos says the annual celebrations attracted a record 50,000 people last year – up from the normal 40,000-45,000 – and she’s expecting at least the same amount this year.

“We have loads of events prior to the New Year’s Eve and after, so this will make it more festive down in

the Mount,” says Penny.

Attractions include a top line-up of free entertainment throughout the New Year’s Eve day on two stages, including Tauranga bands RPM, The Generators and Triple J. Bands begin at 8pm on both stages with performances continuing until after midnight, when the New Year will be welcomed in with the traditional spectacular fireworks display.

“Another highlight will be the Miss and Mr Mount Maunganui competition, which we are having for the first time, on Mount Main beach, at 3pm on December 31.”

All party-goers are reminded to keep safe and plan ahead with a designated driver – a message some

youth and church group members will be promoting on the night.

Roads into the Mount will start to close from 2pm on New Year’s Eve, with all vehicles entering the Marine Parade closure area needing to show a vehicle pass.

Those arriving by car are encouraged to use the free Park’n Ride service from the old Cossie Club on Kawaka St (from 11am on New Year’s Eve until 2am on New Year’s Day). Get your dancing shoes on for twilight concerts The summer music scene is heading for Katikati’s Haiku Reserve with the annual Twilight Concerts offering three concerts, starting early January.

On January 5 and 26 and February 16, a selection of musical talents will perform at the reserve, thanks to the Katikati Twilight Concert Committee, offering a chance to dance and/ or laze in the sun.

On January 5, Tim Armstrong and The Kiwibandits is main act.

This three-member band formed

in 1987 and spent the next few years travelling and playing in the USA and Europe before returning to New Zealand. The supporting act for this concert is 14-year-old Tauranga student Calista Nelmes, who is a finalist of the TV show ‘New Zealand's Got Talent’. Later in the month, on January 26, is a concert for Elvis, Buddy Holly and Neil Diamond fans. Rock ‘n’ Roll band The Che Orton Band will perform favourites such as ‘Shake, Rattle and Roll’,

‘Great Balls of Fire’, ‘Twisting The Night Away’, and more.

Tony Wellington will perform as Buddy Holly, and Brett Wallace as Neil Diamond. Brett appeared in ‘Stars in their Eyes’ several years ago and is sure to be a crowd pleaser. The last concert, on February 16 is a night of home-brewed entertainment, beginning with the Katikati Brass Band. Standing O is a group of friends from Tauranga with a common love of music and theatre. While Danni, Lochlan and

Seth are three musically gifted Katikati young people who a lot of concert-goers will already be familiar with.

The other highlight of concert three is Zuhana, a band of four intermediate-age students attending Katikati College, who are finalists from the recent Smokefree Rockquest competition.

“Regular maintenance of inflatable life jackets is essential – there have been drownings in other parts of New Zealand due to life jackets failing to inflate and that’s not something we want to see happening,” says Bay of Plenty Regional Council maritime

Organic store prepares for holiday onslaught In preparation for the inevitable swell of Papamoa’s population during the Christmas and the holiday period, staff at Hardy’s Organic – the popular organic store at Fashion Island – have been heavily stocking the shelves for the last two months in readiness.

Hardy’s Papamoa manager Marion Olsen says the increase in customers can last well into February.

Many people are amazed Papamoa can boast an organic store of the standard of Hardy’s and regret the fact they don’t have one in their home town, she says.

There’s one other Hardy’s Organic in Taupo.

“People always say to us, ‘Why can’t we have a store where we live?’,” says Marion.

Girl’s basketball dream becoming reality Wikura Kuka is on a mission to cross the Tasman after being selected as a reserve for the Basketball Pacific U15 team.

The 12-year-old Tauranga Intermediate student needs to raise funds to get her to Australia on January 7.

“We got an email from Basketball New Zealand earlier this month, advising us she had been selected as a reserve for the U14 - New Zealand Development,” says Wikura’s mother, Te Ara. “She [Wikura] is just over the moon that she is even a reserve, at a New Zealand koro level at 12

years old.” There is still another two years before Wikura can play in the team.

“So to be selected at this age, with all the time and money we have put in for her to play basketball, has paid off – and Wikura has realised she is quite good at the sport.

“That’s all she does now; she just goes to school and trains, trains, trains.”

Wikura got the bug for playing basketball when she was a Year 6 at Maungatapu Primary School, playing on a Friday night.

“She really got into the game, she loved it.”

“So when she went to Tauranga Intermediate she went to the canteen one day and saw they had

a flyer up for trials for the Tauranga City Basketball team.”

Te Ara saw the flyer as well and was going to ask her daughters if she wanted to try it out –but Wikura was already asking her if she could join.

“We went down and gave it a go.

She wasn’t sure if she was going to get in or not, but she did make the team as a junior.

“In the first year she didn’t get as much court time, but she learned so much that she just developed her game.”

Wikura needs $3200 for her trip to Sydney, including flights and accommodation.

“I’m busy doing raffles and everything you can think of to try

and raise the money for her to go, because I don’t want her to miss out over financial reasons.”

So far, Te Ara has raised $1150 and says she needs to get $1600 by January 3.

“The balance we can pay off by the end of the month.”

Help to future-proof property now available A set of six video clips, produced by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, to help landowners to future-proof their land are now available online.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council land management manager Robyn Skelton says the short videos – available at: www.boprc.govt.nz/futureproofyourland – offer tips on weed control and demonstrate how local landowners and community groups can take steps to protect and restore their land and waterways.

“Rural landowners face a range of challenges that, if left unmanaged, could undermine the future production and the value of their land,” says Robyn.

“The video clips are designed to show landowners how they can take action that will protect their soil quality, crops, livestock and lifestyle.”

The regional council works with landowners to reduce erosion, improve water quality and protect natural habitat for wildlife. Through its Riparian Management and Biodiversity Management programmes, the council offers assistance to landowners by providing advice and 25 to 75 per cent funding for eligible work.

“The new videos complement a suite of information

As these berries At this time of the year, hunter-gatherer types like me seek out the love to hide in a wonderful blackberries that grow wild at some holiday spots around mass of nasty prickthe country. I mean why wouldn’t you? les, it’s sometimes

advisable to carry a stick or slasher, or even a board to lay on top of low-lying branches. The effort means sometimes you can get a bountiful supply of wonderful blackberries, and often wine berries as well. There is an easier way, however, and that is to buy them from a farmers’ market where everything seems to taste better and certainly fresher than those from the supermarket.

There are many ways to use blackberries – but let face it, quite often it’s just straight down your throat with nothing added. Berries like dry hot weather; and an unseasonal wet spell can ruin the fruit especially the flavour, so eat them up while you can. To make an interesting dessert, try this week’s sago and blackberry ball. It’s a great way to have blackberry with some crunch and texture.

Ingredients 1 cup pearl sago 2 cup milk 1.5 discs palm sugar grated (about 60g) 1 split vanilla pod skin from half an orange (with most pith removed) 1 cup blackberries ½ cup crushed vanilla biscuits Method Heat the milk, sago, grated palm sugar, vanilla and orange skin in a heavy bottomed pot for about three-five minutes stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Once a thick paste is formed, spread out gluey mixture onto a plastic tray and allow to cool for a few minutes. While still warm, smooth out some mix in the palm of your hand, place a blackberry in the middle and then enclose carefully with the rest of the mix. Roll the ball in crushed vanilla biscuit and allow to set completely in the fridge for one hour. Then deep fry in hot oil for four minutes. Drain and sprinkle with icing sugar.

Serve with vanilla custard.

Figures for the wider Bay of Plenty show the share of overseas-born residents has inched up in seven years since the 2006 census, with the portion rising 2.4 points to 17.3 per cent – with the greatest number by far coming from the UK and Ireland (39.8 per cent), followed by Asia (21.8 per cent).

Tauranga’s Settlement Support service helps newcomers settle in – and while not everyone relies on their support, communications advisor Helen Gould says their figures are a fair indication of migrant trends.

“There is a growing general interest in coming to Tauranga,” says Helen, who understands the Western Bay’s 135 different ethnic community’s means it is the third most diverse region in the country.

In 2012, the service helped 518 migrants and their families settle in the Western Bay, with clients from England topping the list (50), followed by those from India (27), South Africa (17), Sri Lanka (16) and Brazil (13).

In the 11-months to December, numbers had slipped overall to 394, with new arrivals coming from a wide range of countries topped by India (20), South Africa (13); and Kiribata, Korea and Argentina (11 each).

Helen believes the drop in those seeking help is just a blip and says the trend for increasing migration, particularly from Asia, is set to continue.

Census figures show the number of Asians living in the Western Bay region has almost doubled from 4428 in 2006 to 8235 this year, out of the region’s total population of 158,481. Numbers in the Middle Eastern/Latin American/African category also rose sharply, from 450 to 864.

Hope for app backing smart drinking A Tauranga youth organisation is hopeful a new app, which records the cost and health effects of drinking alcohol, will curb excessive youth drinking in the Bay of Plenty.

‘Drinksmart’, developed by Social Code Limited with support from ACC, is a new online and smartphone app based on the idea that people are more likely to change their attitude towards consuming alcohol if they see how much their drinking is ‘costing’ them.

Along with measuring the financial cost, in terms of dollars leaving a person’s bank account, the app shows extra calories consumed when drinking alcohol, which may be adding to a person’s waistline.

Tauranga Safe City coordinator Mike Mills is optimistic any tools to help all people – not just youth – manage their drinking of alcohol is potentially good.

Mike, who works in the alcohol harm reduction sector, admits he was initially unaware of the app.

But he believes it will only gain traction if promoted correctly – by

Triathlete shares importance of eating right This week I’m sharing my question and answer session with multi-sport competitor Des Harris from Papamoa.

Q: When did you get into multi-sports and what were you like beforehand?

A: I joined a start-up triathlon club in Papamoa (TriPapamoa) in March last year after attending a local gym doing spin classes and other exercise sessions on and off during a two year period. At this stage, I was 106kg and extremely unfit.

Q: How did the first few months go?

A: It was a massive adjustment, as running and biking were a struggle and besides, I couldn’t swim.

My first triathlon was a children’s event and the 300metre swim was a real challenge. My weight fluctuated between 94-100kg and I couldn’t seem to break through this cycle.

Q: What happened from there?

A: My current coach Sam Warriner, who was organising my training programme, introduced me to her team’s nutritionist Ady McKenzie who is also an

What actually happens after you eat different food and drink combinations.

From here it was easy. At the time, I thought I was doing the right thing by eating lots of fruit. As it turns out, with fruit being largely carbohydrate, which turns to glucose, my blood-sugar levels were getting out of control. Drinking Raro juice didn’t help either.

I still eat some fruit daily, and now have a more balanced mix of protein, fat and mainly complex carbohydrate. Chia seeds and cinnamon in my porridge, grain breads, avocado, nuts, seeds, fish, meat and mainly green vegetables are all part of the mix.

Q: How are you doing now?

A: I feel great, I weigh an average of 20kg less, and have completed and am competing in several half ironman events this year, as well as being a first time full ironman participant in Taupo, 2014. Having the knowledge has helped make this a life-changing journey.

Jody Hopkinson hopes hundreds of people dancing spontaneously in one place will help spread the word about violence against women.

She’s helping to organise an event – to coincide with Valentine’s Day – which will see men and women dance in unison at Tauranga Waterfront’s Edgewater Fan zone.

The ‘One Billion Rising’ campaign began in 2012, with 30 minutes of spontaneous dance on the Edgewater Fan as part of a global campaign.

About 30 people took part and this time around Jody expects hundreds of people to attend the one-hour event.

Jody says the goal is to encourage one billion women to stand up and dance to protest violence against women.

“People have said enough is

enough and this is a way of continuing that momentum.”

Those not confident with dance are encouraged to just “stand up and move with us”, says Jody.

Stress-relievers that work for you A lot of people have said 2013 has been a tough year.

Some comments suggest a lot of little things happened, which have been low level stressors.

But long-term, some people even had big things happen to completely change their view of the world. I think it is really interesting that in the last week before Christmas many people said they were truly ready for a break this year – and they hope 2014 would be easier all round.

We don’t often have a lot of power over things that happen around us in life, but we certainly do have the power to decide our response to those things.

Sometimes, keeping your head up and a smile on your face is difficult when everything seems to be hard work in life.

However, one thing I always say to people is: “It’s not what the stress is that matters, it’s how you deal with it”.

Make 2014 the year you figure out your own stress-relieving activity.

It could be something as basic as a long walk along the beach, or pottering in your garden.

The key to a good stress reliever is it being something you can do every week, to create balance in your life.

It doesn’t have to be just one thing either – you could have two or three strategies to help you manage life.

When you’re doing your New Year’s resolution list, consider an extra column for implementing balance in your life.

The importance of back up support Q: I am the main back-up support person for my elderly parents in Te Puke.

During Christmas, we will be going away for three weeks.

The sorts of things I do are get their groceries, collect their medication and either pop in or phone them most days to just make sure they are okay.

Muriel travels to the library most days by car – and sometimes bus – but says she’s getting to the stage where she may not be able to drive anymore.

My investigation into Tauranga City’s historic places began with plans to remove the historic ‘D’ block classroom at Otumoetai Primary School back in July. The plans caused uproar within the school’s community, and while the classroom wasn’t registered with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, it drew my attention to what historic gems our city holds.

Of the 26 NZHPT registered residences in Tauranga, I’ve profiled 17.

My journey’s allowed me to tell the stories of many Tauranga residents who hold fond memories of the city’s oldest dwellings.

Summercross battle ahead for Cooper Off the back of his recent success, claiming the first motocross title of the season, Mount Maunganui’s Cody Cooper is picked as favourite for this weekend’s Summercross event at Awakaponga.

Cody, who claimed last month’s New Zealand Supercross Championship crown with wins in all six races, is expected to out-pace competitors in the Honda Whakatane Summercross’ MX1 class, with his former Kiwi international rivals Josh Coppins and Ben Townley both recently retiring from racing.

However, the Bay of Plenty Motorcycle Club event, which is now in its 42nd year and has attracted a record 545 entries, has no firm favourites in the 250cc MX2 class.

Race director Tony Rees says the MX2 class is wide open, with a handful of serious contenders –including reigning national MX2 champion Scott Columb, Ethan Martens, Te Puke’s Logan Blackburn, Mount Maunganui’s Rhys Carter and John Phillips of Rotorua.

Another top rider, who has a good chance, is Tauranga motocross coach Peter ‘Broxy’ Broxholme, says Tony.

Racing ahead for Te Puke’s rising star Struggles to attract sponsorship will not stop rising Te Puke racing star Michael Scott squaring off in the upcoming Toyota Racing Series.

Michael, who was hoping to raise $130,000 in sponsorship towards the cost of the five week series, says he will use some Kiwi resourcefulness to stretch his budget.

“We’re Kiwis, so we’ll find a way to make it work,” says the 19-year-old, who lists accommodation and travel as obvious areas he can save dosh.

“But we won’t be making sacrifices in any of the important areas, like tyres.”

Sponsorship is still being finalised, but he believes he’s attracted less than half of the sum he wanted – and is still keen to hear from those who can help.

Michael has just completed four days of practice in the South Island, training

“We were really happy with how it went. Compared with how I was driving at the start of last season, we can see our times are a bit over a second faster.”

The series runs during five weeks, finishing with the New Zealand Grand Prix at Manfeild February 6-9 – and is dominated by international drivers, but Michael has his eyes firmly set on being the top of the four Kiwis expected to compete.

Michael says the lack of sponsorship will be challenging, but he’ll find a way to make it work.

Phoenix plan doomed Proposed commercial redevelopment of Mount’s Phoenix Carpark has always been doomed because the Tauranga City Council never delivers on private and public initiatives.

Even worse is Bain McDonald’s, and followers, plan to convert the Phoenix carpark into open green space, transferring public parking about half a kilometre out to the ex-Mount Bowling Club and Nikau Crescent.

This scheme defies belief.

Go check out reserves at Coronation Park, Banks Ave, May St, on Marine Parade, at Pilot Bay and Mount Drury.

They’re all within about 250 metres of the Phoenix carpark, and all are readily accessible to the public.

Mount Mainstreet, local businesses and the media are remiss in not doing their

homework and encouraging this sort of planning.

It was Mr McDonald’s interests which developed the commercial building adjoining the Mount Mainstreet offices (Phoenix carpark), and the new offices near the end of Shadelands Lane.

Both of these buildings, in my view, have on-site parking shortfalls.

On a recent Friday night, as is typically the case, I saw the whole Phoenix carpark was full, with little available parking on Maunganui Rd and Victoria Rd. If council do away with the Phoenix site’s carparking facility, another Tauranga CBD looms.

And, who is to pay for this project?

In a nutshell, it will be TCC ratepayers.

It’s not ‘win win’ - it is ‘lose lose’.

Resolutions and all that jazz Only a few of days now until New Year’s Eve. And, as is traditional, a bunch of folk will be making New Year’s resolutions.

In the spirit of democracy – not to mention post-Christmas laziness – I’m turning over this week’s column to a random selection of local musicians who were good enough to offer their resolutions.

As for me? Dunno. I gave up smoking a few months ago (for good this time), so that one’s out. I’d like to play the mandolin better, and to perfect my recipe for Chongqing chicken. Nothing earth-shattering really. Mostly, I’d like to thank you all for reading the column in 2013 and wish you a happy New Year and a great 2014.

BEHIND THE CANDELABRA Starring Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, Rob Lowe - Dir: Steven Soderbergh This is the film you won’t see in next year’s Oscars - and it certainly deserves a few, starting with the three actors mentioned above - because when Soderbergh shopped it round in Hollywood he was, despite his own track record and the cast, turned down by every studio. In a move of jaw-dropping hypocrisy they told him the film was “too gay”.

Scott Thorson, who slowly gets remodelled in his master’s image, Lowe is the plastic surgeon who does the remodelling.

It’s all there – the glitz! The glamour! The pianos! The insanely different times, times when women would flock to Liberace shows and everybody said that just because he wears a lot of jewellery and a bit of make-up and loves his mother doesn’t mean he’s gay, of course he’s not he’s just a sweet boy, and at the centre of it all a weird but actually tender love story that of course goes wrong in the end. And because this is based on Thorson’s book maybe it’s not exactly the whole truth... but it’s a fascinating ride.

Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur made his move to Hollywood with the 2012 Mark Wahlberg action thriller Contraband. Obviously the formula was successful (it was certainly fun) so they’re back along with Denzel Washington for an even more escapist romp, 2 Guns has the pair playing undercover whatevers caught between the CIA, navy, drug runners, and well, everybody really, when some sort of scheme goes sideways.

The ridiculous plot barely matters as the boys banter and bond winningly and lots of things get shot at and blown up. Think 1980’s Michael Bay but not as dumb.

I Didn't Come Here to Die immediately plants its stylistic flag on the grindhouse hill with a deliberately degraded and bleached low-budget look so familiar in seventies exploitation. It has six young camp volunteers travelling to rural isolation only to die one by one from self-inflicted misadventure.

And a bit of murder. It's a similar central gag to Tucker and Dale vs Evil - if only this were in the same league.

What humour there is derives from intentional shoddiness and script naffness, while the gore and convention nods mark this as a film made by genre nerds strictly for genre nerds.

A lot of people are going to be very unhappy with Only God Forgives . Most specifically, I suspect, anyone harbouring romantic thoughts of Ryan Gosling. And, judging by women I know, that’ll be quite a few. Be warned, this is not only a nasty brutal film (not necessarily a bad thing) but it’s also really weird. It’s set in the drugs and prostitution world of a very stylized Bangkok where Gosling’s brother is murdered and he, with “encouragement” from a rampaging Kristin Scott Thomas as his mother, seeks revenge. Very bloody, deeply strange, it will probably also alienate anyone watching because they enjoyed Drive, Gosling’s previous collaboration with director Nicolas Winding Refn. I liked it.

Kick-Ass was always going to be a hard act to follow. Its extraordinary balance in leaping over the good taste barrier while still keeping you invested in – incredibly enough – believable characters was a rare and beautiful thing. Kick Ass 2 does about as well as you could hope but doesn’t quite pull it off. The shocks aren’t as shocking any more, the characters aren’t as real. When it gets to the point that things turn a bit serious it doesn’t completely gel. That said, there’s a lot of good stuff, including a great turn from Jim Carrey. It’s just the first one was kinda perfect.

Bay drift and action sports fans are in for a double deal next month, when the national drift series returns to ASB Baypark for what is hoped will become an iconic event.

Following last year’s successful drifting round at Baypark, D1NZ national drift series organiser Brendon White is adding an extreme sports festival to the mix. The New Zealand All Stars event will see Australasia’s leading skate, scooter, BMX and FMX riders go head to head during the two-day competition.

“There is nothing like it in New Zealand, where you can see the top talent from all these action sports together. It’s got the potential to really become something,” says Brendon, who wants it to become the Kiwi version of X Games.

ASB Arena will be transformed to accommodate the skate park set-up from Dialled Indoor Mount Maunganui, along with a few alterations to provide a top circuit to challenge Australasia’s top skaters, scooter and BMX riders.

“It’s a bit of a logistical nightmare, with all the work we’ve got to do,” says, Brendon, which includes bringing in 300 sheets of ply

to protect the floor. “But I’m sure it will be worth it.”

Brendon says he was blown away by interest in last year’s third round event, where they had to close the gates to keep within approved spectator numbers (7500), saying holding the action sports festival this year will allow them to take another 3500 spectators in the stadium. He believes the extreme sports will appeal to a similar crowd to the drifting.

Billed as New Zealand’s biggest summer action sports festival, the January 18-19 event will include a competition by top international riders, such as Levi Sherwood, Nick Franklin and Luke Smith, as well as the coun-

try’s first official Pro-Am FMX competition involving about 15 upcoming riders.

“There is nothing like it being offered at the moment and this is just the beginning. With all the different facilities around Baypark, we are hoping to grow it a lot more.”

Next year Brendon wants to use the main arena for BMX dirt and supercross events, but says as a new event they had to walk before they can run. An application for Tauranga City Council strategic events funding was turned down, but he hopes a successful event will attract the support of council and more sponsors. Details: www.d1nz.com

Book sale targets bullying More than 6000 books are on offer after Christmas Day and into the early New Year as a fundraiser for For The Victims of Bullies Charitable Trust.

From Friday, December 27 to Saturday, January 4 (excluding New Year’s Day) the trust will sell a large range of second-hand books, including children’s books, fiction, travel, DVDs and jigsaws.

The sale, from 9am-3.30pm daily is in a large warehouse at 13 Totara Street in Mount Maunganui – almost opposite the old fire station and the port.

Organisers say while a lot is being said and done about bullying, there is still so much more people can do.

“Bullying is on the rise in New Zealand and cyberbullying is now becoming a social media tool, destroying children’s lives at such a fast pace.”

The trust has been set up to make a difference in the lives of children and to help handle cyberbullying and bullying in a positive way.

The event will help with the costs of running the 2014 children’s programmes, seminars for parents, sharing information about cyberbullying, and helping keep children safe from the power of social media.

“We are about empowering our children who have been, or are, victims of bullies, to stand up to the bullies in a non-violent way and to build their confidence.”

Hunt for new tanker underway

Mad on mangroves

Some people hate mangroves and want them gone.

They think they are taking over our harbour and robbing us of the sand-flat and salt-marsh habitat around the harbour margins, resulting in loss of easy access to the water. Other people think they are useful, because they trap sediment; and because they are a native species, they should be left to grow.

I think there is a middle ground. I do not want to see mangroves continually expanding their range across the harbour; and I reckon we should be halting their spread.

Our environmental conscience

Rena is challenge to this generation’s environmental conscience. Is Tauranga considered such a safe seat in the National Party election strategy that they can continue to dismiss local concerns in respect to the Rena and Route K? I guess these questions will be answered next year. How New Zealanders and locals respond to the Rena disaster will be the test of environmental conscience for this generation. It is of little surprise New Zealand’s international environmental standing has fallen so dramatically when we are prepared to accept all is well.

Teenage pregnancy concern

Many young mother cats, with their litters of kittens, are being taken into ARRC at the moment. Often, these young mother cats have been owned at some stage, not been de-sexed and then left behind when people move.

Come breeding season, they become pregnant and deliver their kittens in a safe place.

While their kittens are easy to find homes for, these young cats don’t have as much success, but they make lovely pets.

“They’re also readily adaptable to rural fire purposes,” says Barry, who says a replacement will need a re-paint, signage, pumps and tank baffle-balls fitted, plumbing, and communications and warning equipment.

The hunt is on to find a suitable tanker to replace the small 4WD rural fire tanker housed at Greerton Fire Station.

“The tanker – known as ‘Little Flick’ – doesn’t carry a lot of water, which you need when it comes to vegetation fires,” says Barry Low, Western Bay Moana Rural Fire Authority’s principal rural fire officer, who is in charge of the replacement.

Weight issues have also seen it necessary to reduce fire equipment the truck carries, to keep it legal, says Barry.

“This hampers its effectiveness in a callout.”

Barry applied for community funding for a purpose-built appliance/tanker “but didn’t quite meet the criteria” – turning the rural fire authority back to looking on the used vehicle market.

So far, Barry’s spotted two candidate tankers; the first’s vehicle appraisal gave disappointing results.

“Estimated costs of bringing the vehicle to a serviceable and reliable condition were greater than the asking price. This truck was discounted,” says Barry.

A second vehicle came up for auction, which Barry found to be an ex-milk tanker, already modified to use as a rural fire tanker for operation by a Waikato volunteer brigade.

“Enquiries indicated the vehicle had a number of mechanical issues. Unfortunately, the truck went to auction before these could be properly assessed.”

Barry’s dream machine would cost about $200,000 to build, and they currently have about $75,000 for a replacement.

He reckons ratepayers already pay for appliances via rates, so he won’t be asking the authority for additional funding.

“We pride ourselves on running a lean, mean operation.”

“We are not in urgent need for it – we will get by without – but the current tanker has been on the road for 10 years and its age is starting to slow it down.”

Another year goes and another year comes.

Yet for most of us the years seem to fade one into another. Nothing seems to change, the same problems, the same uncertainty, the same unfilled promises of last year’s New Year’s resolution, the same...(you fill in the gaps).

The future you hope for looks like it’s too far to reach. It’s easy to look at the next year feeling despondent and make new resolutions or lower the standard of ones we made last year.

However, I want to encourage you not to give up, but to continue making goals and plans. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of

craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control”. (AMP).

What Paul was saying here to Timothy is when you come against barriers or opposition to what God has called you to do and be – you can make it.

Why? God is with you and helping you through these challenges. Yet we must do our part and walk with God in trust (faith) through these challenges. So as you come to think about what the New Year may hold commit it to God and allow Him to lead you into it. I tell you, you won’t regret it. Blessings for the new season.

Facing the New Year without fear Perhaps this time last year there were things we said we wish we hadn’t, things we did we wish we hadn’t – and, things we didn’t do we wish we had.

Too late now.

The journal of John Wesley records conspicuous New Year resolves and prayers. New Year’s Day 1736, he was on board a ship bound for Georgia, to conduct missionary work among the Moravians, and we have this entry: “Oh, may the New Year bring a new heart and a new life to all those who seek the Lord God of their fathers”.

On January 1, 1790, after 50 years of amazing Christian service, Wesley wrote: “I am now an old man, decayed from head to foot. My eyes are dim; my right hand shakes much; my mouth is hot and dry every morning. I have a lingering fever almost every day; my motion is weak and slow. However, blessed be God. I can preach and write still”. Eighteen months later, the old warrior laid down his sword crying: “The best of all is God is with us”.

Fear and dismay are two enemies lurking in the shadows to rob us of our peace and purpose, and trust and confidence for the New Year. Fear is the child of doubt, but faith is born of God. It’s because of who God is; that He loves us intensely and has the sovereign ability to command such things for us, a year without dread, discouragement, or fear. Fear and faith are never good friends. They don’t get on well, so one of them must go.

Fear ends in failure, but faith leads to freedom. To look around isn’t any help. There is enough in our modern world; enough wars, strife, and contentions at every level, international and local, to breed depression, hopelessness, fear and dismay. To look back isn’t any help. To do so sometimes only serves to remind us of our sins, failures and weaknesses. To look within isn’t helpful either. Excessive introspection can just be morbid and depressing.

Houses undergo fitness checks Rental housing in Tauranga will undergo a warrant of fitness check as part of a nationwide project to make housing safer, especially for children, students and the elderly.

WOF tests start on 25 Tauranga rental properties in January, as part of a national programme of field tests on 125 rentals in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

Much of New Zealand’s older housing is cold and damp and of lower build standards than in many other OECD countries, says Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby.

“Regardless of the reasons why the houses were built to these standards in the first places, it is well-known that poor housing conditions contribute to more severe asthma, rheumatic fever and other housing-related illnesses,” says Stuart.

“Tauranga City Council is therefore committed to participating in this rental housing WOF field test with the hopes of a tool being developed in the future that will improve housing standards for our community.”

The field tests will not result in the immediate issue of WOFs for the 125 houses but will be an important step towards standardising methodologies and checklists to ensure the credibility of the WOF scheme.

The assessment tool was developed by the NZ Green Building Council and the University of Otago in Wellington with feedback and input from the five councils, ACC and other housing experts.

“ACC is supporting the warrant of fitness trial as part of our focus on reducing injuries in and around the home,” says

ACC programme manager for home safety, Megan Nagel. “Poor lighting and maintenance, slippery surfaces and steps and stairs contribute to many home injuries, so by helping to address factors such as these, a housing warrant of fitness will potentially support efforts to bring injury rates down.”

The support of ACC and the five cities involved shows a strong joint commitment to improving local housing and health, says Homestar Director at the New Zealand Green Building Council Leigh Featherstone.

“We hope that by the end of this project there’ll be a working tool to rate rental standards nationally.

This will make sure rental housing isn’t endangering the health of the families living in it. The long-term payoff will be better health, particularly of our kids and elderly.”

The agreement to pre-test the rental warrant of fitness is an outstanding example of what can be achieved by local councils working together to improve rental housing quality for families and communities, says Professor Philippa Howden-Chapman, at the University of Otago, Wellington.

“Over a decade of robust research by the Housing and Health Research Programme has enabled us to develop a world-class rental housing WOF, which we are pre-testing before it’s rolled out more widely.”
