Something for smokers to get fired up about The idea of charging a hundred bucks for a packet of smokes has ignited a bit of debate around the country this week.

The concept of stomping on smokers by sending them broke probably only means that we’ll have a sector of the population reduced to craving bankrupts.

Some say that crime will increase. However, that’s not a good enough excuse to do nothing. Just because there may be a side effect doesn’t mean action isn’t necessary. That’s why we have police and a justice system, to enforce the law. It’s hard to stop car theft and it’s big business, using a lot of police resources, but that doesn’t mean we should just give up and leave the keys in the ignition.

Another option is to ban the commercial sale of tobacco products. Register and pay a licence to grow it yourself if you must, but take away the convenience of purchase.

The registration cost should be the only funding available for your subsequent health care when the tobacco causes lung disease and gangrene.

And this is the point at which my few mates, who still smoke, will probably unfriend me on Facebook…Here at RR we believe the best way to tackle smoking is to have them all register as drug dependants, agree that they are a future drain on the health budget and sign away all rights to free medical care in the future. Then they can smoke themselves into oblivion (away from the rest of us) and as long as society doesn’t pick up the tab, do we care anymore?

Smokers have had enough time to realise it’s a bad idea and society, generally, is over it.

Namby pamby approach

I guess that’s not likely to happen, due to our collective self-penalising, namby-pamby approach to anything bad.

We seem happy as a nation to molly-coddle those who cost us and kill us, socially and financially, and keep propping them up.

Much the same as paying the dumb to breed, as letter writer Graeme Martin points out very well this week. (Letters, page 36.)

Frankly, the non-smoking population is tired of being nice and paying tax to support people who can’t be bothered helping themselves, while they blow smoke in our fresh air space to show us their appreciation.

It’s not just the cost of patching up sick faggers, but also their innocent families, friends and workmates who are dying from passive smoking diseases.

We’ve been subjected to vast amounts of anti-smoking messages over the decades. If they haven’t figured by now that it’s a bad idea, they never will.

I know some of you out there are thinking this sounds quite callous and that I perhaps don’t care for the rights and wellbeing of smokers.

Yes, you’d be right. I can’t think of any good reason to be nice or understanding about this.

Smouldering idiot

For decades they’ve not cared about the rights and wellbeing of non-smokers, killing off many with their passive smoke in lunchrooms and public spaces. I tell them so, at every available opportunity. I won’t sit in a public space and have a smouldering idiot ruin my fresh air and lungs.

The smoking bans in recent years have gone a long way to protecting the innocent but we still haven’t gone far enough.

We legislate, and put huge effort into every other danger in society – such as licencing drivers, restrictions on speed, safety of vehicles and campaign against drink driving – yet smoking kills and maims more New Zealanders than our roads.

We licence gun owners and put major restrictions on firearm use, yet there are a handful of deaths each year, whereas tobacco kills 4300 to 4600 New Zealanders every year. Even if all smoking stopped today, the deaths will continue for decades from those who have been poisoned in the past. I cringe

when I think about the smoke levels in some of the lunchrooms at workplaces I was forced to endure over the years. It’s really noticeable when you travel to more backward countries, that haven’t banned smoking indoors, and see some areas that are designated smoking. A smoking section in a restaurant is no different to having a peeing section in a swimming pool.

I am required to have a licence to operate my VHF radio, which you’d think must be a very dangerous appliance, judging by the amount of bureaucratic palaver that goes with them. Yet as far as I know, no-one has died from one, or is likely to be killed by this little radio, unless of course, they smoked it.

Dogged by law

Even dogs have to be licensed, yet they cause virtually no deaths and a handful of maulings each year. And a lot of those are unregistered anyway!

The most absurd story I heard this week was a little white fluffy dog that has been re-homed because it has run onto the airport a few times.

There’s apparently a $10,000 fine for a dog running onto an airstrip. Your cat can go there as many times as it likes. Your cat can cause any amount of mayhem in the community, with impunity. (Even smoke, probably.) Your cat could bring down a 737 full of anorexic orphans on their way to sing carols at the old folks’ home, then walk away without any repercussions for you, the owner.

But as soon as a dog feels the green grass of the airstrip between his persecuted pads, he’s in deep trouble. And so is the owner.

A cat can kill as many native birds as it likes, but as soon as your dog sniffs a kiwi butt, his gets the boot.

So we have this crazy society which demands that dogs be licensed but not cats, yet both are just as capable of supposedly taking down an aircraft. And we have licences for guns and cars that kill a few hundred people a year collectively, but few restrictions on using tobacco that kills thousands.

About time we got our priorities sorted and stubbed out this nonsense. For good.

at Historic Village

Council has approved a Tauranga Historic Village Strategy that some submitters say fails to address their key concerns.

Calls for the village to operate seven days a week for the retail tenants have been overlooked in the strategy.

The village has a 95 per cent occupancy according to council staff, with 31 of the tenants being community groups and 12 being commercial enterprises.

The commercial tenants want the village open seven days a week so they can extend trading.

It is a division in the village that goes back years and flared up in a public meeting at the village about a year ago, says submitter Mike Frohlich.

One lot relies very heavily on traffic going through, and the other side may not benefit by zillions of people walking through there.

It is a division that resulted in Mike witnessing two bus loads of cruise ship tourists being turned away from the village.

The council approved strategy, which has taken about two years to produce, is for the village to continue to be run by the council staff with input from an advisory group.

Councillors expressed concerns they were going in circles, that the advisory group will lack teeth, and there was a call for a further workshop on alternative management structures.

Group manager business services Dean Riley’s reply is the advisory group doesn’t need teeth. It needs to develop a master plan which will become the decision making template for the village’s future.

He says with the strategy approved the council will be able to offer tenants leases longer than the current one year term. That alone will enable the council to start turning the village’s financial performance around.

For aspiring music stars Amelia McNabb and Becki Martin all the hard work practising is worth it when they see the audience reaction.

“I love the energy that you get from the audience when you’re performing. Their response is exhilarating,” says Becki.

The Otumoetai College Year 12 students, who make up the group Planet Miranda, are among the first to register for the annual secondary school rock band contest Smokefree Rockquest – and are already increasing their practises.

Shared ambition

The 16-year-olds, who both sing and play guitar, teamed up two months ago to form the pop group Planet Miranda and to pursue a shared ambition to make the musical big time.

The group has already made it into TV2’s Erin Simpson band battle and is looking for success and exposure wherever they can get it.

“We would love to win or at least make the final and are going to put in a huge effort. We want to get our name out there,” says Amelia.

Young talent

Otumoetai College head of music Vicky Jeffares says the competition is a great opportunity for students who are passionate about music and is often a launching pad for young talent.

“The spin-off for the students is great. The likes of Luke Thompson and Kimbra – who is doing well in the US, all came through Rockquest.”

The school has a record of success in the competition, having won the regional competition three times in the last five years, and taking third place in the national finals two years ago.

Entries close May 4, with the Bay of Plenty heats on May 12.

Mount rally driver making mark Mount Maunganui rally driver David Holder is on a mission to make the motorsport’s big league – and is aiming to get a little this traction this weekend.

David, who shifted up from his rural Southland roots six months ago to base himself with older brother and co-driver James, has already made an impression on the National Rally Championship circuit with his debut race in Whangarei a month ago.

“We had a pretty good start to the race, we were up to ninth in the New Zealand Rally Championships, then I made a couple of wee mistakes and we got stuck off the road.”

They were unable to complete the race, so the result was invalid for them, but they definitely surprised a few people.

“We gave some people who have been around a while a bit of a hurry up and we are hoping to get a bit more attention this weekend (at the Wairarapa Rally).

“Now that we know we have the speed of the other guys, we are going to drive a nice and clean rally all the way – but I’m not saying that we are going to go slow.”

David, the younger of the brothers, says it is great to be driving alongside James, who competed in the national rally in 2005 then coming runnerup in 2006 before retiring. David credits James for getting him into rallying, first teaching him paddock racing then naturally progressing into rallying. He says they have the ideal driving partnership.

“We just really love rallying and can talk about it all day long. We work really well as a team. It’s key to have a good relationship with your co-driver because when you are driv-

ing generally you are on your limit of yourself and your co-driver.”

When the brothers are not racing or working on their car, they work for James’ business Monit Rally, which develops LCD data displays for rally drivers.

David has serious goals in rallying – aiming to get into an international competition such as the Asia-Pacific or UK circuit within the next three years, then ultimately the World Rally Championships.

He says he has received good support from the Mount community since shifting here, and Rally New Zealand is helping cover some of their car maintenance costs with a scholarship for young drivers.

“Unfortunately there is no prize money (in the National Rally Championship), it’s more for the bragging rights and a bit of a trophy.”

Volleyball star turns to the greens The playing surface is an irrelevance to Omokoroa’s, and volleyball’s, rising star.

On hard court or sand – Beniece Douch is a high-flyer.

The Year 13 Bethlehem College student, who has been selected in an extended New Zealand Indoor Women’s Volleyball squad ahead of the Asian Championships in Thailand, also recently won the gold medal at the U19 New Zealand Championships with her beach partner Alice Bain.

And the good news doesn’t stop there – she has also been selected to represent New Zealand as part of the Elite Beach Volleyball team at the world championships in Greece in July.

Not bad for a girl who only started playing the sport after arriving from the UK in 2007.

But things have not always come so easily to the 17-yearold. She missed out on

selection for a Bethlehem College junior indoor team in 2008 and had to ask to join the training sessions.

Since then, a great deal of expense and a rigorous training regime including swimming, weights and mountain and sand running has transformed her into a national representative with eyes for the professional, Commonwealth and Olympic stages.

There’s only one catch – while volleyball enjoys a large following internationally it is still a minority sport in this country.

As such, Beniece must raise between $800010,000 to attend the world championships.

Her fundraising effort will get into full swing at Omokoroa Golf Club on May 20, where teams of four players will compete in a fundraising golf day to be followed by a raffle and auction.

Prizes on offer include an overnight fishing trip to Mayor Island for six people on a 42ft launch courtesy of Mount Maunganui’s Fishing4less, a hotel package at Rotorua’s Millenium Hotel and beauty packages and products from Immerse Nail and Beauty Therapy of Bethlehem.

Other businesses will be sponsoring individual holes. Entry for teams of four players costs $160 and includes light refreshments.

Depressed land values may keep rates down Western Bay of Plenty property owners may not face a full 28 per cent increase in rates if the Bay of Plenty Regional Council decides to re-adjust its proposed rating spread, says councillor for the Western Bay region, Jane Nees.

The regional council is aware of depressed land values in some rural areas of the Western Bay and could take that into account when setting its final rate take, says Jane.

She also adds the proposed increases in rates, which appear large in percentage terms, are not so significant when it comes to the dollars involved.

Cash cow?

Jane is responding to comments by Western Bay of Plenty District Council mayor Ross Paterson, who says the Western Bay and Tauranga regions were being used as a cash cow by the Regional Council.

In percentages, the regional council’s proposed new rates would mean a 28 per cent increase or $29 rise per property for the Western Bay of Plenty, taking the average rate to $173, and an 18 per cent increase

or $19 rise per property, or average rate of $138, for Tauranga.

According to the draft plan the regional council proposes rates increases for Opotiki of $10, Whakatane $10, Rotorua $9 and Kawerau $7.

“We have got concerns that the targeted rate is being reduced considerably and the shortfall is being taken up by general rates funding,” says Ross.

Submissions welcomed

The regional council’s draft Ten Year Plan lists Rotorua Lakes water quality, Rotorua air quality, river drainage and flood management in the Eastern Bay and the environment of Tauranga Harbour as areas where the rates will be spent.

“The work programme has very little in it for the Western Bay region.”

Jane acknowledges there is concern about the way the rates take has been structured and encourages ratepayers to make submissions to council’s Ten Year Plan. Submissions close April 27.

Council proposes to collect a lower proportion of revenue through targeted rates, which means a larger proportion of the costs of some programmes (including Rotorua Lakes, passenger transport and Rotorua air quality) will be paid for by all ratepayers, rather than by specific communities.

Overall, the changes have the effect of reducing the targeted rates for some rating areas and increasing general rates for ratepayers as a whole.

Significant costs

Jane says that decision is not final and council will consider what ratepayers say in their submissions.

“The requirement to improve the water quality of Rotorua lakes and that we clean up the air in Rotorua has come from central government and the costs are significant.

“Rotorua residents have been paying three targeted rates and as the city’s air quality and the water quality in its lakes could be considered of national importance, council is proposing to spread the costs across the wider district.”

New recruits has sport rolling like thunder Roller Derby is experiencing a boom in the Bay of Plenty.

The local club, Mount Militia, reports a serious uptick in new recruits, with a total of 55 registered players making enough for two representative crews: the Dangerous Curves and Violent Femmes.

In fact, they now have so many players they need a new training venue.

Their current training sessions, which include skill, endurance and strategy work, clash with

inline hockey at Baypark’s Shed 2 so they need a new location with a smooth floor measuring more than 1000m².

Andy Bryan (Medicator), Tania McCluskey (T-Bone) and Nikki Henderson (Nikalicious Vicious) are part of the club, which has been around for about two years.

They train three times per week, and have inter-club bouts once a month.

They say that the club has grown

because Roller Derby is great for fun, fitness and friendship.

“Once you get on a pair of skates, you’re off. You just need to keep an open mind and have fun!” says Nikki.

They have another ‘fresh meat’ intake in June, and they welcome anyone to try out – even if you don’t know how to skate, as they train members of all levels.

Risking one’s life for others is about as heroic as one can get. But for this fire fighter there is always more to give.

Tauranga senior station officer Phil Price is headed to Sri Lanka in August to help build homes for locals in what will be his fifth trip for charity organisation, Habitat for Humanity.

The trip will involve working with volunteers and locals to build 24 homes for families in Negombo.

“It’s a pretty exciting way to get involved with helping people,” says Phil.

The 59-year-old can’t get enough of the volunteer trips. “It’s an amazing experience when you hand the house over. It’s quite emotional.”

This sort of thing is addictive, says Phil. “When you get back you think, I want to do that again.

“You come in contact with the locals like you never do as a tourist.”

Phil hopes to take around 15 people from Tauranga this year and is currently looking for volunteers to complete his team.

“It’s hot, full, the days are long,” he says. “I promise it’ll change your life.”

Volunteers pay their own fares and there is an opportunity to get some “R & R” in Sri Lanka after the builds.

Students to strut their stuff Forget Paris, London and Milan.

One hundred secondary school students will strut their stuff in early May in the 26th annual Tauranga Girls’ College Fashion Parade.

The event, the main fundraiser for the Tauranga Girls’ College Parent Teacher Association (PTA), will feature routines choreographed by students sporting the latest threads from 14 Tauranga and Mount Maunganui clothing outlets.

Organiser Pippa Smith says she is pleased to welcome back the ten outlets represented last year, as well as four new stores – Evolution, North Beach, Vaga-

bond and Glassons Tauranga.

About 70 girls and 30 boys will take part in the shows, which will start at 7pm under the new direction of Pauline Happé.

The Edge’s Dom Agnew is to MC the event. Tickets, costing $12, went on sale from school offices on April 23. A concession price of $10 applies for groups of four or more attending the show on May 2.

A promotional poster, designed by student Tauranga Girls’ College student Jazz Klinkert who will be part of the show, can be found in participating outlets.

Under-21 New Zealand snooker champion Rogan Beedle can’t wait to take on the world’s best age-group talent in China in July.

Rogan Beedle started playing snooker at 12 years old with his dad.

Now he’s headed to China for the 2012 World Under-21 Snooker Championship in July and the 20-year-old Mount Maunganui resident is thrilled.

Rogan earned his ticket winning the New Zealand Under-21 Championship in Auckland two weeks ago.

“I’m pretty stoked about it. It was good to finally get it; I have been trying for three years.”

Rogan has been playing snooker for almost a decade, realising a couple of years in that it was more than just fun.

“My dad got me into it, he was quite a good player back in the day. I pretty much picked it up off him.

Then I started wanting to get serious with it.”

Although he’s chalked up with excitement, Rogan is nervous about the sheer level of skill waiting for him in China.

“It’s intimidating; I will be playing the best under 21s in the world.

“I know how good they are. They’re pretty much at the level of professionals on TV.” Approximately 64 players will be competing in China in the eight day tournament running July 14-22.

Rogan works at Mount Maunganui RSA and practises before and after shifts nearly every day. nHis ultimate goal is to become the New Zealand champion, but he knows he’s got some work to do before then.

The pinnacle of the Year 13 social calendar is arriving at many Bay of Plenty schools, with annual ball season about to begin.

Tauranga Girls’ College year 13 dean Sheryl Walker says the school ball, on May 5, is the main topic of conversation among girls in the top year.

“It does seem to me that the girls are very excited about it, about what they are going to wear and all the details. It’s a huge deal.

“For the girls they are really excited about their big chance to look glamorous.”

Sheryl was unable to estimate what the ball would cost a typical girl but says it would be in the hundreds of dollars.

“From a girl’s perspective there’s the dresses, hair, spray tans seem important, there’s jewellery and shoes and down the list comes the partner.”

Sheryl says it is interesting to compare the experience of boys

like her two sons who just had a shower and put on a suit half an hour before they had to leave, to many girls who dedicated a whole day to getting ready.

Girls’ college textiles teacher Stephanie O’Sullivan says in a quest to have a different dress, fashion students will often make their own.

Year 13 student Kayla Korach-Allen, who will study fashion design at university next year, is finishing off making ball gowns for herself and a friend.

Kayla says part of the inspiration was to make something unique, but it was also to create a gown her tall figure could wear heels in.

Bethlehem College kicks off the season with the senior ball this Saturday, followed by Tauranga Girls’ College on May 5, Mount Maunganui College on May 12 and Aquinas College on May 19.

Never thought I’d see anything with a bigger bite than me!

We set sail from Whitianga. and the miles slipped by. Before long we arrived at an idyllic island and first priority for this seafaring mutt was to get ashore for R&R. Well getting in and out of the dinghy was a mission in itself.

The boss and I worked out a very clever plan. He’d throw me under one arm and jump in the dinghy, pulling the motor cord with the other. We’d get to the beach, jump out before the breakers ruined my perm, and leap out for some frolicking in the waves and sand.

When it was time to get back in the dinghy, he’d throw a stick in there, and I’d be silly enough to jump after it, every time. I never did wise up to that trick, for the whole trip.

The downside of that was, we ended up with enough driftwood

in the dinghy to build a small raft.

Each night I slept under the saloon table, gazing up through the hatch to the starry sky. Sometimes when the wind blew and the anchor warp was snubbing at the cleat, whatever that means, I’d get a bit scared and sneak my nose under the boss’s quilt. Every morning though was wonderfully calm and warm, and I’d get up early and wake him with a sneaky lick to the face. I couldn’t wait to get underway again to see what adventures would unfold during the day.

The voyaging was fun for a young pup and we saw lots of interesting places and met some amazing people. We even saw Seal. I’ve heard his music before but never realised that in real life, he is quite a blubbery layabout.

We saw lots of nice islands, some we could stop at and some we couldn’t. Someone called Doc makes sure that the likes of me don’t run ashore and create havoc, such as Dotterill Omelette.

Nothing new here. We have already sold farms to international

investors. But I think we are bothered by this one because it is sixteen farms. And clearly, the purchasers are not planning on coming to live here, as Shania Twain does at least some of the time.

What’s more, we cannot buy farmland in China. Free trade does not mean our freedom to acquire their prime assets.

With the melamine scandal fresh in memory, we are rightly nervous

about shonky business practices that could impact on our international reputation and clean and green brand.

Shares in other prime assets, such as energy companies, are also to be sold.

Nobody believes that those shares and their profits won’t eventually head offshore.

Remember the trains! Let’s hope we don’t have to buy our assets back again.

The ten year plans puzzle With Brian Anderson

My neighbour loves Sudoku and was very appreciative when we gave her a large book of never ending numbers with blank spaces. The WBOP District Council’s 10 year long term plan and the Sudoku book are very much alike with many incomplete tables of numbers offering a certain masochistic pleasure in the task of trying to fill the gaps.

The whole document could have been presented clearly for the public to understand in 50 pages. No one seems to have complained about the presentation of the Regional Council’s 10 year plan. The information from the main document is clear and easy to read and the Regional Council has included a 40 page summary. The Region’s planning has been criticised which means that the public has been able to read it. The only general complaints over the regional plan have been over the increase in regional rates and accusations of ignoring the harbour in favour of Rotorua.

Making the most of it The sword of reform is hanging above local government’s head.

The government has an 8-point plan and intends to legislate for the changes starting later this year. I think the plan is like the Curates egg - good in parts.

I think the need to examine costs and funding of infrastructure and the de-cluttering of the regulatory framework is good - the rest I think needn’t happen.

The proposed changes to the purpose of local government are a fettering of local government’s discretion. The wise application of discretion is part and parcel of the local representative model. There are always situations where there are wide ranging views on funding needs and the open robust decision-making processes provide local accountability.

Take for example the current proposal that the regional council and TECT fund the new Taurangabased tertiary project. The government is saying local government shouldn’t do things government does

– e.g. tertiary education. Only problem is the government isn’t funding more capital for tertiary. So where does this project fit?

Down with political posturing

It shouldn’t annoy me, because it is unfortunately part of the political scene, but I dislike political posturing. I prefer straight-up information provision and honest discussion, rather than attacks in the media with a range of hidden agendas. Even worse, are comments made or reported based on a misunderstanding of the facts of the matter, on incomplete information, or only giving part of the picture.

And I know it isn’t always the fault of the political commentator. Local government is not good at making information simple and easy to understand, so it is easy to get the wrong end of the stick or at least the wrong impression of the bigger picture. The media is also very good at taking comments out of context and of accen-

tuating the negative while minimising the positive.

Another of my dislikes is the way that political point scoring is often used to deflect attention away from another matter, or set the scene for another political agenda. Those in politics are aware of what is happening, but those on the outside may not be and they can get a false impression of the true situation.

Badminton – a sport which Tauranga’s Lillian Flanagan has played for 35 years – is one of the many Sport BOP recreation advisor Nicki Scott is encouraging everyone to try their hand at some of the 40 activities on offer, saying there is something suited for all levels of fitness and interests.

“It can be harder to keep your exercise routine up over the winter so hopefully some of these options will help make it easier for people to keep active.”

Indoors month runs during May and is the fourth of the rotating monthly themes in Sport BOP’s new eight-month Play in the Bay recreation promotion programme.

Nicki says the walk and adventure months have been great successes since Play in the Bay launched in March and has introduced many people to new activities.

The indoors month calendar includes many exercise classes, traditional indoor sports such as bowls, badminton and basketball, along with a wide range of fitness-dance classes such as salsa, tap, Zumba and Capoeira. There are also many activity options for children.

As part of indoor month, Parafed BOP is running open days to give anyone interested the chance to try their hand at wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball, boccia or blokarting. The open days are at TECT arena, May 11-12 from 10am-2pm.

Dwarf white voodoo lilies Tauranga City was presented with three plants by Auckland City Parks Services.

This gesture arose out of a staff visit to view Auckland Parks and how they operate. I’m hopeful the recent Auckland local government reforms and pending reforms across the country are not reflected in the plants being dwarf white voodoo lilies. We were told they have an ‘unpleasant odour’ too. Seriously though, this gesture is appreciated and there is plenty to be gained by sharing information and experience.

Nikki Wilkins from Acorn Foundation addressed elected members with an update of this community foundation charity fund. Public-minded citizens can bequeath all or part of their estates to Acorn, which will invest the funds and donate proceeds to charities directed by the estate to general community benefit.

The fund already has $6.2 million invested since starting in 2003. It’s currently returning 8.2% of which 1% is for administration, 2.2% for capital growth and 5% for community benefit.

A question was asked about structures on top of the Mount during receipt of minutes from the Mauao Steering Group. This committee oversees administration of the Mount. The understanding is there are to be no additional structures. Wayne Moultrie drew a few chuckles when he told us there had been a ‘strategic sidestep’ to leave this matter for the new committee. Some sort of plaque had been discussed for four years with no result.

The city waterfront upgrade progress was reported.

The northern reclamation is open to the public already and the southern reclamation is expected to be finished in June. These reclamations were made in the early 1960s. No resource consents, no consultation – it just got done. This RMA stuff is not all good. You would never be able to get this done today. I learned to sail in this area before the reclamation and it was a dirty muddy area and, in my view, filling it in benefited the city.

Staff told us there had been great cooperation between the regional council and TCC to facilitate the upgrade. That’s good. But on another plane I ask why the regional council needs to be there at all? I know the legal reason but TCC is quite capable of fulfilling these functions.

Part of an elected members function is to help citizens with issues with the bureaucracy. Last week I received a call for help for a major problem arising through council’s planning department. This one was hard to believe. I’ll keep it simple, as it did get complicated, and I don’t have the room for all detail.

A builder had had his consent rejected because the house plans for a group of houses he was/is building didn’t have the living rooms facing the street. According to ‘good urban design’ principles and CPTEDs (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) there must be passive surveillance both from the house to the street and from the street into the house. Sounds great for peeping toms too, doesn’t it?

At the meeting between the builder and staff I raised the possibility that the people living in the house might like to have some sun too. Yes, came the reply, but the urban design principles stood and had to be complied with. The builder had a consent and that required street surveillance. A compromise got thrashed out, principally because the builder has no option. If he went for a new consent it would take time and money.

Lots of it. And all this is in your best interest of course.

Urban design was foisted on to ratepayers with the absolute promise (verbal – which counts for nought, see last week’s column) that this ‘initiative’ would be educational, advisory and voluntary. Yeah right! It’s back door regulatory in my view when an applicant gets ‘advice’ that urban design principles will assist the consent application. I’ve raised this serious matter with elected members and the CEO. If you have experienced issues similar to this, give me a call. Believe me, if this carry on gets regulatory traction they will be telling you what door knob you will have.

Incidentally, according to the new rules we would be unable to build our house today, despite the fact we’ve lived here happily for the past years – we don’t know the hidden dangers we’re facing. Oh dear!

Anticipated growth

At Airport Committee we were told that despite a slight drop in passenger numbers, the business is doing well. Surplus to end of March is $1.1 million and on budget. This operation is non ratepayer funded and is supported by a user pays airport and leases off surrounding land. The committee comprises three from the private sector and three

elected members. The trend in the business is growth and we are contemplating baggage handling extensions this year in anticipation of that growth. It’s a good amenity for the city providing a large green space in the middle of the city. The best bit being it’s selffunding and providing recreational activity of a wide-ranging nature on a user pays basis.

Wheel clamping and emissions trading Being a minister has seen me get around the country a fair bit in the last fortnight.

I’ve been in Auckland meeting with the parking enforcement industry to help facilitate a code of conduct on wheel clamping, an issue of growing concern recently.

I’ve also led consultation meetings in Gisborne, Rotorua, Whakatane and Whanganui on changes the Government is proposing to New Zealand’s Emissions Trading Scheme. Brighter future

One of National’s four priorities – and a central part of our plan for a brighter future – is improving frontline public services. Our work is already getting results.

Going to a kindy, kõhanga reo, or Playcentre is crucial to help children learn and develop. Our target is that 98 per cent of under-fives attend early childhood education (ECE). Despite tight finances, we’ve boosted ECE spending by 40 per cent since 2008. We’re also focusing on expanding ECE opportunities for those children who are most in need.

National is improving the quality of maternity services for expectant mothers. We’re investing $54 million more over four years to better support vulnerable families and give

first-time parents extra support and information.

We’re also providing an average of three extra WellChild visits for 18,000 new mums in need during the first three months of their baby’s life. And we’ve established seven teen parent homes, and invested $15 million to ensure that vulnerable teen parents get the support they need.

Calls to PlunketLine have increased thanks to our fullyfunding a 24/7 service. There were 110,000 calls in 2010/11, compared with just 69,000 in 2007/08.

A record 92 per cent of undertwos are now fully-immunised, up from just 73 per cent in 2008.

We’re on track to achieve our target of 95 per cent for two-year-olds, so we’re setting a new target to have 95 per cent of eight-month-olds fully immunised with three scheduled vaccinations by the end of 2014.

Cargo Shed ends set for demolition

Both ends of the Cargo Shed on Dive Crescent are to be demolished almost immediately due to safety concerns.

Tenants in either end of the 1950s building moved out of the complex last month as it is deemed structurally unsafe and an earthquake risk.

Demolition on the ends is expected to start soon while the council has decided the centre part, leased

by Creative Tauranga, will remain.

Commercial future for The Elms

Tauranga’s historic precinct The Elms is facing a commercial future after securing the remainder of the original mission site. The Elms Trust used a fund set aside for the development of a visitor centre to pay the deposit on the corner section in February – several months earlier than expected. Elms Trust chairman Jeff Major says the purchase has brought forward the necessity to consider The Elms future as a viable sustainable attraction, instead of a straight historical site.

Wedding show finds new home

Blushing brides beware – the Tauranga Wedding and Special Events Show is heading back to the Bay bigger and better than ever.

The event, organised by the Tauranga Wedding Show Company, will be back in style on May 20, when it will move inside the new Baypark TECT Arena after previously being housed inside the Baypark pavilions.

Organiser Menno Quartel says a crowd of about 1000 is expected, with the approximate 90 exhibitors to be experts in their respective fields, with all the skill and expertise to ensure your special day goes off without a hitch.

Each will have

specials to offer on the day, and the registration period for new exhibitors remains open.

Those in attendance will be welcomed with a glass of bubbly or juice, and free wedding planners will be available on the day.

Radio station The Edge is back on board this year, with another promotional stunt planned after last year’s event, which saw two couples wed at the Baypark pavilion with wedding packages including everything from bridal wear and entertainment to catering and celebrants.

The show costs $10 for adults, but is free for children under 15-years-old, and will run from 10am-4pm. Online site weddingplanneronline.co.nz will also be re-launched.

Movie star wedding to set trends As if their blinding beauty, collection of gorgeous children and movie star lifestyle wasn’t enough. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are taking their perfection to the next level by finally getting married.

Amongst last week’s new students was the classic intelligent, caring child a little over weight (substitute for smartest, prettiest, new to school, parents separated, tallest, shortest, slowest) who is getting hell at school from bullies.

Probably the worst part of meeting these kids is the Mums who are choking back tears as they talk about the bullying and the effect it’s having on their child.

Bullying the act of physically, verbally or physiologically intimidating another person is at its most potent and dangerous for the young and that’s were it’s commonplace.

Fear is the source of a bully’s power and without inducing fear in others the bully has no power. Bullies seek victims who lack self-confidence so they can exploit their weaknesses and break their spirit. A child’s inability to stand up to bullies is rooted in a profound fear for their personal safety.

Victims know they must confront the bully and would like nothing more than to stand up to them but they simply can’t follow through due to fear of the physical harm this will lead too. And here in lies the big problem – how do we instil the confidence

to look the bully in the eye and back them down?

Leading child psychologist and bullying researcher Dr Suzy Lipkin states “in 50% of cases a strong ‘No’ will stop a bully in their tracks.”

Self-confidence

So how do we build that steely determination? Well it’s simple really, teach the victim how to deal with the physical confrontation and the rest will follow. It’s all about self-confidence, you wouldn’t expect your child to instinctively know how to swim if they fell into water.

To give your child self-confidence grounded in the knowledge that no child can harm or intimidate them is a priceless gift with the potential to shape their entire lives.

Classic Flyers NZ blends aviation and homework Think Classic Flyers NZ and you probably think about incredible air shows full of fighter jets and classic aircraft along with a museum showcasing New Zealand’s aviation history.

Margit Barreras says Young Flyers aims to make homework exciting.

What you may not be aware of is that Classic Flyers NZ is one of Tauranga’s most exciting educational resources.

The museum is regularly visited by schools from all over the Bay of Plenty.

With this in mind, the Classic Flyers NZ Education Team of New Zealand trained teachers saw the need to develop the in-house afterschool program, called Young Flyers, to further extend the number of students who could attend.

Young Flyers came about through a need to assist and support parents with the task of enriching their children’s learning by getting homework completed regularly and positively.

Education coordinator Margit Barreras says Young Flyers is a worthy initiative.

“As a parent myself, I see the value the museum adds to schools and would like to offer the same opportunity to parents”.

The world of aviation is rich in maths, science and language concepts and tying the excitement of this world in with homework and learning has been seen to increase student interactivity and productivity across the globe, says Margit.

Classic Flyers NZ is a natural home to an integrated learning approach offering opportunity for exploration and discovery, all the while solidfying concepts in key core areas.

An holistic farming method drawing on conventional and organic techniques is to be the subject of an information day at Ngongotaha on May 3.

Organised by the New Zealand Biological Farming Systems Research Centre, the event aims to promote biological farming to Bay of Plenty farmers and has the support of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.

Biological farming is described as a holistic approach to modify and improve soil conditions for beneficial microbes to increase soil microbial activity that helps speed-up nutrient cycling, and to re-establish mineral balance in the soil.

Organiser Dr Guna Magesan says biological farming is not organic farming, or conventional farming either.

“It is a mix of conventional and organic farming practices involving careful crop and soil monitoring to ensure optimum yields, nutritional density and humus production. While organic farming is considered to be too restrictive, because of its own set of rules and guidelines, biological farming is considered more userfriendly, flexible and adaptable,” says Guna.

The free information day is at Ngongotaha Community Hall (5 School Road, Ngongotaha, Rotorua) from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

The session will be chaired by Gifford McFadden, and the speakers will include Bay of Plenty Regional Council chairman John Cronin’ biological farmers from Reporoa and Edgecumbe, Dr Ravi Sangakkara - chair in crop science at the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka and Biological Farmers Association spokeswoman Nicole Masters.

The play opens Wednesday, July 4.

Forgotten soldiers find rightful place Revisionist history of the good kind added extra significance to ANZAC Day celebrations in Te Puke on Wednesday, as a new World War One memorial was unveiled.

The new memorial, comprised of a granite plaque fastened to the Te Puke War Memorial Hall, contains 72 names – 50 more than the original unveiled in 1963.

Money for the project, which had

been undertaken separately by Ernie Dix and Christine Clement without the other’s knowledge, came from the Te Puke RSA, Te Puke Memorial Hall, Te Puke Community Board and from public donations.

The names of the soldiers were found in a variety of places – including history books, other memorials, national files and archived newspapers.

The new memorial includes five sets of brothers and three known sets of cousins. One boy served under an assumed name, one died while serving with the Australian Imperial Forces and one was, according to school rolls, only 16 years and 6 months old when he enlisted, though he told the authorities he was 21.

Asian fusion A few weeks ago I shared a mixed base for a beef or lamb curry. This week we’ll lift it up another level and go for something that will really sock it to you!

It’s a punchy and vibrant macadamia nut based curry I’ve called Macanese Crusted Chicken.

Macanese cuisine, one of the Asian fusion

cuisines, is a blend of Portuguese and southern Chinese cuisine. The wives of Portuguese sailors used spices from all over the world to try and replicate European dishes, resulting in a unique Macanese cuisine.

These days I certainly could not afford to fly off to Asia but a decent shop at an Asian supermarket is surprisingly affordable and if you know what you’re looking for and what to do with what you get.

Amongst all the weird and wonderful

choices there are a few items that some of us cannot tolerate. One of those polarising products is Belacan, a dried fermented shrimp paste sold in block form. The smell of Belacan toasting will empty the upstairs office but if it’s not cooked properly the whole dish is compromised by depth of flavour and an off-putting smell.

The first shipment of the much anticipated BRZ two door coupe, which is due to arrive here in December, is rapidly being snapped up by buyers.

Before going public, Subaru of New Zealand offered these cars to Subaru customers via the internet. Subaru customers had the chance to secure one of the 12 cars prior to public release. Wallis Dumper, managing director of Subaru of New Zealand, says the response took the company by surprise, with eight units being snapped up within six hours.

Those outside Subaru’s customer base will have to move quickly to secure one of the final four.

The final price has not been established between Subaru of New Zealand and Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) - the maker of Subaru vehicles - but Subaru of New Zealand has indicated it will be below $60,000.

The first twelve BRZ’s also come with a bonus three year service plan, personalised Euro-style number plate and an exclusive track day experience.

Features include 17 inch alloy wheels, limited slip differential, dusk sensing Xenon headlights, an engine immobilizer, ventilated disc brakes on all wheels, cruise control and dual zone climate air conditioning.

The front midships mounted Boxer engine develops 147 kWs and the car proved successful in Japan. International motoring magazines have described the BRZ as the best Japanese sports car since the NSX. Further shipments of the BRZ will be available in 2013.

Q. I’m worried about our next-door neighbour. His garden is overgrown, and I help out with his lawns, but don’t have time to do all the work that is needed. I took some baking over to him, and was really concerned about the state of the house. I know he fought in the Second World War and I think he should be looked after, after everything he did for our country.

Attention spendthrift wordsmiths – entries are open for the Katikati Haiku Contest.

Organiser Sandra Simpson says the contest is the Katikati Haiku Pathway committee’s only fundraising initiative for the project, which features 24 poems set into an equal number of boulders near the Uretara Stream.

Previously, money raised had been used to print promotional pamphlets, engrave boulders and purchase new signs.

Entries for the contest close May 16 and the prizes will be awarded at the third Haiku Festival Aotearoa, at Tauranga RSA, June 15-17.

That event will feature master classes from American Jim Kacian – one of the world’s leading writers of haiku.

It will be the first time the festival, which has previously been held at

irregular intervals in Wellington and Christchurch, has featured a foreign tutor.

Australia’s Beverley George will also take a class on the five line poem form tanka, and another workshop will be offered by Auckland University’s Dr Lawrence Marceau on haibun, which comprises prose and haiku.

Registration for the national festival, including all courses and a bus trip to Katikati, costs $80, while half day registration costs $22.

Katikati’s Haiku Pathway was formed in 2000 as one of New Zealand’s Millenium Projects, with its specially designed footbridge dedicated as the sun rose on January 1, 2000. Sandra says the pathway is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and the largest collection of ‘haiku stones’ outside Japan.

The biannual event, which involves joint replacement recipients completing a sponsored 1km walk to raise funds to assist orthopaedic research, will be based at Greerton Marist Rugby Club on Sunday, April 29.

“A lot of our joint recipients are senior people, so sometimes it relies on the day.”

No target has been set for the fundraising effort, but Jan says the $150,000 raised nationally in 2010 supplies a rough guide.

Offers of help and donations have been pouring in and are greatly appreciated.

Entry to the event, which will help surgeons to

improve the standard of care delivered to patients, is free.

In my role as an educator for Age Concern Tauranga, I regularly get invited to speak to care assistants and health workers in training at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.

I consider this a very valuable opportunity to raise awareness regarding the issue of elder abuse and neglect prevention in our rest home communities. There is often little or no attention paid to this very important subject in the current teaching curriculum,

Fighting cancer with complementary therapies The hotly debated topic of treating cancer with complementary therapies will come under the spotlight next week with a talk on the subject by two Bay of Plenty specialists.

The talk has been organised by the Breast Cancer Support Service to help arm cancer sufferers and their families with appropriate information on treatments.

Support service coordinator Lea Lehndorf says there is a lot of “conjecture and confusion” on the issue.

Tauranga-based medical researcher and doctor Professor Shaun Holt will talk about how complementary therapies can play a significant part alongside conventional treatments in supporting cancer patients through their fight with the disease.

Shaun will talk about which therapies are likely to help and show people why they should make these hugely important health choices based on good medical research, not anecdotes. His talk will include information on acupuncture, mind and body therapies like meditation and yoga, massage, and herbal remedies including St John’s wort. Shaun will also look at many commonly used therapies that do not

help or may even make things worse.

The other speaker is Dr Barbara Hochstein – a Rotorua-based radiologist who was spurred on to set up the Aratika Trust by the many questions from women she diagnosed with breast cancer who wanted advice on what else they could do. The trust, which she leads, runs week-long group retreats and weekend courses that introduce cancer sufferers to treatments.

Not always the case. There is a genetic component to high blood pressure – a family link whereby the condition is likely to occur in family members. However a genetic tendency is not a given. In the case of high blood pressure, if your family is prone, then it means you need to be more diligent with your lifestyle management than your friend next door who does not have a family history of high blood pressure. Often we are the product of our environment more than the product of our genetics. If we eat what our parents ate, if we are active (or inactive) in the same way they were and live a similar lifestyle to them then it makes sense we will suffer from the same illnesses they suffered. If we modify our lifestyle to be different from our parents, we modify our personal health outcomes.

Heart disease is a men’s issue Incorrect. Women are very good at being proactive with their health – however not in the case of their hearts. Traditionally heart disease was the realm of men, but unfortunately that is becoming less and less the case. In the Bay of Plenty for example there is a higher incidence of high blood pressure in women than in men. Women have a certain amount of natural heart protection up until menopause but after that their risk is similar to a man’s. So ladies, when you send your husbands to me to get their heart checked can you please make an appointment for yourself as well. Better to know your heart is working efficiently, than not know that it is not!

Nervous system problems (Part 2) abundant We continue our discussion on the most common diseases of the nervous system and look today at Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Abundant Health

These are both diseases caused by the loss of brain neurons, though in very different ways. Parkinson’s disease is caused by destruction of dopamine-releasing brain neurons in the area of the brain called the substantia nigra.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is essential to help with brain function. The loss of these dopamine secreting neurons results in the persistent tremor and other symptoms. According to PD researchers C. Henchcliffe and M. Beale (2008) the most likely cause of PD are certain genes that target the energy producing mitochondria of these neurons. This then causes a cascade of cell changes including reduced energy production and a significant increase in free radicals. When this damage accumulates it becomes toxic to the cell eventually resulting in cell death.

A number of antioxidants have been suggested as having potential to reduce this free radical damage, especially Co enzyme Q10 and alpha lipoic acid. My approach is to apply a broad range of antioxidants and then to add much higher amounts of a specific CoQ10 and R-alpha lipoic acid. Resveratrol and OPCs are the main grape derived antioxidants and these may well have an advantage in they are both anti-inflammatory.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is another progressive degenerative brain disease caused by the death of brain neurons. Neuron death is caused by the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques which are toxic to neurons. There are many theories as to the causes and processes of AD but it seems as the destruction is partially caused by an inflammatory response against

the beta-amyloid proteins that form plaques. The body reacts to these as it would an invader. New anti-inflammatory drugs are now proposed as part of treatment for AD. My approach is to add high doses of Omega 3 from fish oil as these increase the immune system production of anti-inflammatory compounds.

Additionally, DHA in fish oil is the preferred fat for the brain so maintaining high levels makes sense.

From a nutritional view, I like to add higher doses of antioxidants especially the OPC’s and Resveratrol as these freely cross the blood brain barrier to protect brain cells.

Unfortunately, allergic reactions to these tattoos are seen more commonly in our dermatology clinics. These reactions are due to para-phenylenediamine (PPD), a hair dye used to darken the colour of the tattoos. Reactions usually develop 10-14 days after application and present as a red itchy rash overlying the tattoo.

Some patients develop blistering occasionally resulting in permanent scaring. Unfortunately, an allergy to PPD is for life and once sensitised you need to avoid most hair dyes. You never know, the ‘silver surfer’ look might become fashionable again.

Radkidz has been professionally and specifically designed to give children a genuine work out while making it interesting and fun.

The classes will be run by the gym’s qualified instructors who have undergone training through Radical Fitness and will include warm ups and exercise routines and a variety of music tracks, activities and sports in a non-competitive environment for all abilities.

We have had a busy month at TCAL, particularly with the school holidays which ran from Easter until last Monday, the 23rd of April. In the first week of the holidays alone, we had over 15,500 aquatic visitors at our pools – making this our biggest week since the Christmas holidays and our third biggest week this year. It’s always great to see the pools being utilised and to see people having fun in our facilities.

Thanks must go out to staff member John Stride who bravely put up his hand to don the Easter bunny outfit and was subsequently mobbed by all the children in the facility. It is gestures like this from our staff that make all the difference to our customers.

We had a record number of children through our holiday intensive programmes and now that we are back into term time, our Bayswim Learn to Swim programme is the place to be.

It’s not too late to join a class, so if you are thinking about Learn to Swim lessons, please call us and we will try to fit you into one of our 300 class times held over 6 days each week.

I read the stories and see the programmes about the growing level of poverty in New Zealand.

Whilst this is sad, it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone as we’ve been paying people to breed in New Zealand for a long time now.

That’s no bad thing you say, but having babies is life changing and this is a decision that should not be taken lightly at any age.

When young people make a mistake (read pregnant teenagers) we say that’s okay, we’ll give you a benefit so you can raise the child yourself.

This happens mostly in circumstances that are far from ideal (read poverty) into houses (they’re not homes as I know them) of multiple partners and/or single parents.

As a taxpayer I object to my taxes being used to continue to abuse these new born babies and young children with the poverty cycle of ‘children’ being

allowed (indeed encouraged) to have more children.

New Zealand doesn’t need any more dumb people, as unfortunately, that’s what these people are. This world is not very kind to dumb people and unfortunately tomorrow’s world will be even harder on them.

New Zealand need’s more bright people not dumb people. There’s not enough jobs to go round already.

I know, this is a tough decision to make, and yes, I can hear all you neoliberals out there saying ‘you can’t say that!’

Well, somebody has to say something, otherwise we’ve got all the makings of becoming the Zimbabwe of the South Pacific.

It’s no wonder we have a brain drain problem. We’re actually helping to create it from within without anybody having to leave. Sad but true.

Take jazz back to traditional styles Dear Brian, I read with interest your comments with regard to the recent Tauranga Jazz Festival.

It was certainly apparent that publicity was at a minimum in the Sun newspaper and I appreciate your comments.

I also read Mr Paterson’s letter with regard to funding, a potential loss and waste of Charitable Trust funds.

All very interesting and adds weight to my beef that the “music” provided

does little to attract the crowds.

A Sunday stroll down the Strand on Sunday afternoon and one is blasted off the street by amplified so-called modern Jazz, which lacked melody and appeal, or so it appeared to the many people passing by.

The Village was only slightly better and if we had not had our Tect cards and had to pay to go in we would have felt

hard done by.

The strolling bands did their bit and most people in the Village at the time were attracted to their traditional flavour and toe tapping presentations.

Further over was the main stand where yet another set of amplifiers and noisy music entertained a group of people.

I am a senior citizen and as such form what I believe to be the majority of citizens in Tauranga and the Western BOP. I am also a passionate supporter of New Orleans style Traditional Jazz.

I have made my complaints to the organisers of the festival apparent in previous years but came to realise that I was wasting my efforts.

Certainly all forms of music that pertain to that would even loosely be called jazz needs to be represented.

However I am led to believe the vast majority of people in the area would appreciate music which is less abrasive and not needing the massive amplification which is very hard on the ear!

Leave the rock bands to their own festivals!

‘Dumbing down’ of historic village Yet again Cr Bill Faulkner comes up with some more rubbish, most people know the village was built on a swamp but so was The Strand and most of the waterfront Memorial Park was swamp and most of Route K is build on a swamp, but unlike the historic village the council spent money draining all these areas. He is trying to cover up the fact that him and the rest of the council dumbed down the village by not spending money on its up keep, but spent millions on finding somewhere to put a museum, and what have we got?

Nothing.

My grandchildren loved going to the village on a Sunday to have a steam train ride, a play on the tug and a ride on the horse and cart and see the local band playing. Kids free $2 per adult, you have to feel sorry for the volunteers who spent many hours making it what it was, and no help from council.

You should never put vision and Tauranga City Council in the same sentence.

A visit to the Wanganui museum last week: $6.50 for seniors, locals free, they have to charge because the city has a 25 million dollar debt.

Jazz festival meltdown Most of criticism over the past week or so has been scathing and pretty well on the mark relating to how this event is being run and funded.

• Not fully paying all performers immediately is an absolute no no and will taint any future efforts to attract these people.

• What did Jazz Fest actually spend its budget of $1.5m on precisely (a list is required).

• TCC pledging ratepayer funding of $120,000 was a complete travesty and by all accounts was way outside Council funding rules. It has proved to be completely unjustified. Chalk up another Serenade in Blue on this one.

• Mayor Crosby can spout all he likes about further TCC funding – the damage has already been done as a result of some Councillors complete failure to face reality or to check out the financials. I ask was a proper written Jazz Fest business budget ever provided to Council and if so, why has it fallen short?

• Words like “sorry we stuffed up” don’t seem to be in the Jazz Fest vocabulary nor is “we will be picking up the tab personally for any shortfall” because TCC ratepayers are not our guarantors. The ongoing solution must be all back to basics from this moment on.

Get the Jazz Bands back into the Bars, with more focus on the excellent Youth Bands and let the youngsters perform after the competition finishes for all those other people who hadn’t heard them. Areas like the Strand Reclamation (Spring Street end), Wharepai Domain, Coronation Park at the Mount and Mount Drury would be great venues.

Citizens taken to the cleaners

Tauranga Citizens are being taken to the cleaners.

Tauranga’s natural advantages makes it the best place in the world to live and work. Why then does Tauranga languish at the bottom of many of the measures of City success?

Tauranga average wages are very low. Tauranga lacks large commercial businesses which employ people and bring in wealth. Tauranga is the most indebted City Council in NZ. Tauranga’s rates have been rising faster than any other city in NZ, Tauranga has the most unaffordable houses, Tauranga’s growth has stopped, and Tauranga’s building fees (even with the planned reduction) eclipse all other NZ cities.

The reason for Tauranga’s poor performance is our socalled ‘City Leaders’ either do not know what they are doing or worse are putting self-interest ahead of what is best for the people of Tauranga.

There are many examples of TECT Trustees making incredibly poor management decisions, wasting millions of dollars which could be invested in your community to provide better education, sports facilities, leisure activities, arts and culture, etc.

How do you fix it? More people with successful business management experience need to put themselves forward for public office. Then you the voter need to change Tauranga’s management by voting for people who have the integrity and skills to run large community organisations successfully.

Without change NOW, many more of you will cease to afford to live here. The future is in your hands.

Salaries percentage I read with amazement and then a tinge of sadness for all of us “contributors” to the Regional Council, that, if Andrew von Dadelszen is correct, (Weekend Sun 20 April) that 73% of “it’s expenditure” goes to staff salaries!

I am assuming at this stage that unless I am mistaken, that 73 cents in every dollar we are forced to contribute, is not used on actually physically doing anything except, well, paying staff to be there I guess.

As much as I would like to think this is not the case, with an organisation as such can do this sort of thing.

Just imagine if a privately owned business responded in a similar way how long they would possibly last! with overheads, rent, power, not to mention actually going out there and competing for your company $$$, along with other running costs etc, this would just surely not be possible to survive, unless, that is, your funds are given to you without competition and in the knowledge that they will be there every year at the expense of the ratepayer.

Oh no! I just had an even worse thought.. what % of our total rates within our District Councils go on staff salaries before actually doing anything?.. I daren’t ask!

Real Estate and choices With regards to real estate we all have a choice these days. I’ve sold 2 houses in the last 5 years using a trademe listing and a sign on the fence. Used free internet valuations and the lawyers fees were about $600 if I recall so the total cost to sell each property was under $1000. The most challenging part is negotiating a good price with potential buyers, but given an average agents fees there’s plenty of room to move on price and still come out a winner.

Terrorism within NZ I am amazed there has not been much media and other support for the police for their efforts several years ago in nipping in the bud the prospect of a significant terrorism event occurring within NZ. It is disappointing that the full 18 people arrested could not be brought to trial for what I perceive was a minor technicality in how the video evidence was obtained.

I find it hard to accept that the very freedom of expression which we enjoy in this country has been used by the defence to thwart a free and open trial of the 14 for whom prosecution did not proceed.

The police have been harshly criticised by many for apparently over reacting in their raids. I ask readers to consider

what they would have done if they had been the officer in charge? Send a small number of police in and put their lives in jeopardy? Certainly a few children were frightened but that is nothing compared with how children and others would have suffered if a terrorist cell had been allowed to come to fruition. We have evidence of a lot of firearms activity (some of it to be expected out in the bush) Molotov cocktails, and explosives, masked people running around, some sort of vehicle hijacking, and visits to Auckland gun shops being well away from the activity.

It is sad that many in society refuse to believe evidence which is put under their noses. Is this the start of a new era for New Zealand? (abridged) Bill Capamagian, Tauranga.

Strange how when others were saying these things for the last two years she howled them down and berated them for their views. And yes, we were all scalded like children and were told we should believe everything Simon Bridges was telling us regarding the legislation.

One only has to look at the huge Treaty Settlements being dished out monthly to see why funds are as scarce as hens teeth when it comes to funding other necessary services in New Zealand. This is causing many hardships for the majority of New Zealanders and at the same time costing some people their jobs.

In the eighties we told the yanks to bugger off with their nuclear warships, at that time we were warned that the fall out this action would severely affect our international relationships and be detrimental to our economy.

We stood our ground on the nuclear issue and did not falter, regardless of pressure applied by the might of the USA, in the end, it didn’t do us any harm, and in fact we became a well respected country because of this position.

Now this National led government, has discredited us by allowing the Chinese to dictate to us their terms on trade and economic interest.

While there may be some value of having a good trade and economic relationship with China, or any other country, but trade agreements should not be achieved by larger nations bullying smaller nations into submission, as it is in this case.

Emerging from the swamp It’s been a busy and exciting time for Grant Haua; now Tauranga gets a proper chance to hear his new band.

I’ve seen Grant playing for years now, and have been writing about him for almost as long. And for the last couple of years what I’ve been saying to everyone is that a jump to international fame and fortune only requires the right people to see him.

And Grant is ready: he sings superbly, plays guitar with such energy and skill that it makes seasoned musicians jaws drop when they watch him, writes great songs, and is a funny, honest and authentic performer on stage.

Now, at last, his new band, Swamp Thing, are playing a full gig in Tauranga, at Brewer’s Bar next weekend (Saturday 5 May). They previously played a slot at the Summerfest earlier this year, but this is an opportunity to see their full show.

Swamp Thing is a duo - Grant and Ngongotaha resident Michael Barker. They got together 14 months ago and it’s been a heady ride since then. Last year the recorded a debut album at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studio in Auckland. The result was Balladeer, a tough dynamic slice of modern blues rock.

But calling it blues rock doesn’t really do it justice. This is not some derivative of Stevie Ray Vaughan (still, it seems, the overarching figure for modern blues players to emulate) but a solid aggressive sound that reaches back to the sort of rhythmic complexity that you hear in the music of Ritchie Havens. More remarkably, the album is a combination of purely drums and acoustic guitar.

And on the strength of Balladeer the band have been conquering Australia.

Last November saw Swamp Thing sup-

porting Tim Finn on a three week tour through that country and, following that, they were invited to play a headlining show in Melbourne en route to the Blues in Bridgetown Festival, south of Perth. Christmas didn’t bring much of a let-up as they played the Woodford Festival in Queensland and the Peatsridge Festival in Sydney, both prestigious international bashes and almost impossible for a Kiwi band, let alone a new one, to get onto.

At the Perth festival in particular the band caused quite a stir and as a result in March they were invited to headline a show in Freemantle and were then flown to Esperance to do another show, finishing their most recent tour with two performances at the beautiful Nannup Festival.

Grant credits getting a foothold in Australia to the efforts of Michael Barker. Mike grew up in Rotorua and recently moved back there after living in Australia for the past 25 years. A well-known and respected percussionist on both sides of the Tasman, he has played with a slew of internationally-acclaimed artists such as The Black Sorrows, Neil and Tim Finn (both with Split Enz and Crowded House), Keith Urban and Missy Higgins. To top that off, Mike was a founding member of

The John Butler Trio, with whom he’s played live on The David Letterman and The Jay Leno shows!

Mike had the dedication and connections and, as I still believe, it’s just a matter of the right people hearing them play.

So it’s good to hear that, as well as those Australian festivals, Swamp Thing put on a show recently at the Kings Arms in Auckland. Grant feels very positive about that gig: “I think we wowed a lot of local music bigwigs,” he says, “so the right people are starting to take notice.”

Tauranga’s very own kings of R ‘n’ B, and a relative newcomer, Papamoa resident Jessica Ross, a wonderful singer/songwriter who is currently recording her first album at Soundtree Studio.

Fantastic Not bad at all Dreadful

Dir: Lars Von Trier - Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainbourg, Kiefer Sutherland planet – Melancholia – that might (or might not) be about to hit the earth.

So, this works on several levels. Justine suffers from depression, a depression that seems to lighten with the imminent planetary collision.

The planet itself (given its name) is clearly partly symbolic. Odd stuff happens, and seemingly trivial stuff. It’s beautifully shot and acted (add in John Hurt, Charlotte Rampling and others to the cast).

Made partly in response to Von Trier’s own battles with depression, this will divide people into those who find it pointless and pretentious and those who, er, don’t . Like me. I liked it a lot.

OK, so lots of people won’t like this film. But if you’re looking for something a little different and are prepared to spend a little time, then there are rich rewards to be had. After first seeing Melancholia at the cinema I found it sticking in my mind for weeks afterwards, and seeing it again on blu-ray only reinforced that.

The story is simplicity itself. Justine (Dunst) and her fiancé (True Blood’s Alex Skarsgard) head to her sister’s posh country estate for the wedding party. It is a fractious affair that all ends in tears. That’s the first half. Then they hang out at the estate, coping in their different ways as the world comes to an end. You see there’s a huge It’s been a while since we had a new Ben Stiller comedy. Long enough to almost forgive him for Little Fockers. Tower Heist is an action comedy caper movie which has assembled a great cast (Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Casey Affleck, Alan Alda, Matthew Broderick, Tea Leoni) but somehow manages to miss out on bringing the funny. The serviceable plot sees Stiller and other hotel workers ripped off by crooked financier Alda and plotting to steal the $20 mil he’s hidden in his apartment. Director Brett Ratner has done this sort of stuff before (Rush Hour) but the resultant film is surprisingly flat.

The Adventures of Tintin is almost fantastic.

For a start it looks brilliant, even without 3D. That Steven Spielberg really knows how to make a film, the action sequences here as thrilling as you could ever hope for. And the story is

fine, a combination of a few Tintin books but neither too complicated nor simplistic. And the cast are OK, Daniel Craig menacing as required and Andy Serkis delightful as Captain Haddock.

But then there’s Tintin himself. Sadly the Belgian boy detective is a wash-out, not simply unsympathetic but actively irritating. It almost sinks an otherwise fine endeavour.

I was initially quite excited about Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark .

Produced by fantasy maestro Guillermo del Torro and starring Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce, it looked like a fun haunted house sort of horror. In it young Sally is sent to live with her father and girlfriend in a new house, only to find mysterious little creatures lurking under the stairs. The creatures themselves are average CGI fare, the acting all round is surprisingly hammy and many will lose patience well before the end. At least there’s no twist where it turns out they were dead all along.

Alex Cox made the seminal Repo Man in 1984. It was a raw blast of wildly imaginative punk anger that holds up today. I still frequently

recommend it to people. Repo Chick , a very belated sequel, was made in 2009.

That it sat on a shelf for three years seems a mystery, until you watch it. Firstly, there’s bugger all to connect it to Repo Man. Secondly Cox seems to have had his 10 year old daughter direct this exasperating tale of a Paris Hilton-like heiress who joins the Repo business, and then given her a budget of about $10. Wild cartoon silliness, bafflingly incompetent.

New Zealand Sign Language is a combination of hand shapes, facial expressions and body movements, and reflects the country’s culture and includes signs for Maori terminology and concepts unique to New Zealand.

As an official language, it is used daily by more than 24,000 New Zealanders.

That’s the question Deaf Aotearoa hopes to make easier to answer ahead of Sign Language Week, April 30-May 6.

The week is a chance to promote deaf culture and language and raise awareness of the issues deaf people deal with daily.

There is always hope What in the world is going on?

Earthquakes, tsunamis, wars, political unrest, famines, fraud and financial catastrophe.

Our daily news is filled with hopeless situations, bad news, and sorry tales of troubled humanity.

The thing is, if we are troubled by these world (and maybe personal)

events, then we need peace, confidence, and, hope.

In the midst of these things, where do we get such hope? Hope can be defined as a confident expectation of good.

It is a futuristic thing.

It looks ahead. Jentzen Franklin once said; “If

you lose hope for the future, you lose power in the present”.

In the field of psychology, there’s one school of thought, the behaviour school, which basically says what we are is the result of our past conditioning; “that we are nothing more than what the forces of our yesterdays have molded us into being”. I don’t believe that. There is good news though!

What you have been, what has happened to you, where you’ve come from, what is going on around you, is not as important as what you choose to become. That is true personally, for your family, for businesses, for the church! That’s the good news of the Gospel. So what do you choose to become? What do you choose to believe?

The good news of the Gospel deals with both our past, and our future!

It heals us from the pain of our past,

and gives us an expectation of things good in the future!

You see, we are more moulded by the future than the past. That’s what makes us superior to animals.

Animals are conditioned by their breeding, their environment, their past. But humans are able to imagine and dream and think and believe about the future. Someone once said, “Dreams and visions are the language of the Holy Spirit”, but they are also the language of the hope filled!

For the Christian, we have sure rock solid promises about our future.

The present may be painful, but the future beckons where there is immense hope, in this world, and, beyond it. Someone once said, “Life with Christ is an endless hope, without Him a hopeless end”.

formed Life ministry workshops are designed to help church leaders and Christians involved in pastoral care, counselling and prayer ministry, and will be performed in Auckland, Hamilton and Porirua.

Dr Mullen says the workshops, designed with help from New Zealanders during previous trips, have been designed to be interactive to suit a variety of different ministries.

Dr Mullen will also be launching his brand new 10 Steps to the New You program during the tour, which is especially ideal for group study. The programme includes a 43 page workbook and ten teaching sessions, which run from nine to 26 minutes.

The pair began their seminars on April 22 and will conclude their tour on May 19.

The inspiration of scripture The Apostle Paul declares very clearly in 2 Timothy 3:16 that “all Scripture is breathed out

by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” The Greek word in the original text that is translated ‘all’ in this verse, literally means ‘all’, ‘every, ‘the whole’.

Psalm 119:160 says “the sum of Your Word is truth” and Psalm 138:2 says of God that “you have exalted above all things Your name and Your Word.”

All of this means that God’s Word, in its entirety, is inspired by God and that God’s Word, in its entirety, is truth.

It is very clear that God’s Word doesn’t simply contain truth as some are teaching today and, of course, they are the only ones who can tell you which parts of Scripture are truth and which parts are not! Others teach that the “inspired parts of Scripture are from God and the rest is from man” and again, they are the only ones who can tell you which are the inspired parts and which aren’t!

One of the leaders associated with the Emergent Church recently stated that “only the words in

red in your Bible are inspired”, referring to Bibles that have the words of Jesus printed in red.

The demeaning and the usurping of the full authority and inspiration of the Scriptures must occur to facilitate the end-time apostasy that Paul speaks about in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 and for the error and deception to occur that makes way for the One World Church that is surfacing

(as Scripture predicts) in these last days.

Quoting Psalm 119 again. Verse 9 says “How can a young man keep his way pure?” Verse 11 says “I have stored up Your Word in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” Verse 105 says “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Without God’s Word as our standard for teaching, reproof, correction and

training in righteousness, we are like a ship without a rudder, liable to be “children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes” as Paul states in Ephesians 4:14.

Greek proverb: Many know how to flatter, few know how to praise.

Praise and flattery are often seen as synonymous, but this isn’t so - they have quite different meanings. When giving praise you are expressing sincere appreciation or a favourable judgement of someone; flattery, on the other hand, is when you compliment excessively and insincerely, and it is often motivated by an agenda or in order to win favour. The second approach is particularly dangerous as it ultimately damages the very relationships you are working to cultivate.
