Astute followers of the RR columns will know how important the royal family is to us. So let’s not waste any time in getting right onto the big news of the moment…

Tauranga residents are joining thousands of protesters throughout the country who are taking a stand against party pill testing on animals.

The Tauranga March to Protest Party Pill Testing on Animals – starting at The Strand on Tuesday, July 30 – is part of a countrywide event with thousands of people participating in marches in more than 10 cities.

Tauranga animal lover Rachel Gainfort is leading the local event and started a Facebook page inviting residents to take part in the protest.

So far, more than 260 people have joined the Facebook page to show their support.

“I am stunned and moved with the support and passion behind Tauranga people,” says Rachel.

“We need to show the Government we will not accept this and New Zealand is speaking now.”

The bill came into force on July 17 banning sales from dairies and grocery stores, petrol stations, and

anywhere alcohol is sold. The bill also bans sales to under-18 year olds. Anyone breaching the rules will face up to two years in prison or a fine up to half a million dollars.

However, party pills can still be sold in R-18 stores.

But Welcome Bay resident Elly Maynard, who is president of Sirius Global Animal Organisation Trust, wants an outright ban on the sale and manufacturing of party pills – which will stop the need for the drug to be tested on animals.

“Party pills have the same effect as speed, ‘P’, ecstasy and LSD and these are the things our Government thinks acceptable for our people?

“No way do we want our animals or any animal put at risk and killed for the sake of a few drugs.”

The Tauranga protest is scheduled for 12pm Tuesday. Protests throughout the country are also planned for Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, Hamilton, Taupo, Dunedin, Levin, Palmerston North, Kerikeri and Invercargill.

Government’s fishy situation slammed The Government’s rushed proposal to increase snapper restrictions for recreational fishers is being slammed as “plain dumb” by independent Tauranga MP Brendan Horan.

Earlier this month Ministry of Primary Industries released a paper outlining three options for snapper regulations in Snapper Fishery 1, which spans the Bay of Plenty, Hauraki Gulf and East Northland.

The release opens up a six-week consultation process where recreational and commercial fishermen are debating over who should be responsible for replenishing the fishery.

Instead, Brendan has a put petition in businesses throughout the Bay of Plenty attempting to gain signatures in the short time frame offered by Government.

“This is something that all New Zealander’s need to get up and start making a stand on. Every single option punishes the average New Zealander on wanting to catch fish for his or her family.”

“Apart from being unfair it’s just plain dumb and doesn’t make any economic sense. The fishing industry in New Zealand brings in over $1billion.”

A more realistic option for fishers will be keeping the quota at nine, and if there was any cause for concern put the size up, says Brendan.

Sportcraft Marine Limited sales consultant Roger Beauchamp is pleased with Brendan’s decision to oppose the proposal in what he describes a lack of forward thinking impacting on the wider fishing community.

“I personally would be happy to make the catch size 33cm and catch limit to six – otherwise to fill up a 20 litre tank of fuel at over $50 means I may as well not go,” says Roger.

“Would you? If you’d been looking at nice $30,000 boat and then someone says ‘oh but you can only go and get two fish’. [You may think] well maybe I don’t need a boat anymore,” says Roger.

“As long as Brendan doesn’t go in waving guns and pistols I think he’s got the right attitude.”

After working for three years on building a 1943 Kittyhawk, it was the moment of truth for the dozen volunteers behind the project last week.

Classic plane restoration team head Bruce Chapman never had any doubt they would be able to fire up the P40E and take it for a taxi, but he says it was still a great thrill for everyone involved.

“It’s great – the guys are all proud of it. It’s just about finished now, I think we’ll just give it one more run then it will be back in the main hangar on display.”

Despite the thrill of running the engine, watching the propeller burst into life and taxiing down the runway, Bruce knows it is as close as they will get to airborne.

Kite boarder eyes world title The addictive feeling of winning has Mount Maunganui-raised world number two kite boarder Marc Jacobs lunging at every opportunity to take the world title off his Spanish rival Alex Pastor.

Marc reached a career milestone after winning the Professional Kite Boarder Riders Association World Cup in Sankt Peter-Ording in Germany last week – claiming his first

ever PKRA world title.

Currently ranked number two in the world, Marc says he is not going to make it easy for Alex to take the world title again this year.

“Alex Pastor is currently ranked number one and has his eyes set on the world title finishing second overall three years in a row.

“I'm currently second at the moment [and] slowly catching up to him – I’m not going to make it easy for him.”

Known by his fans and friends as MJ, the 23-year-old has been kite boarding for about seven years, using the “pristine surf beaches” at Mount

Maunganui and Pukehina.

Marc says the win has brought him one step closer to fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a world champion.

“I'm super stoked I finally won an event. It is an addictive feeling being on top I hope I can continue like this.

“It's a good stepping stone for me. Now that I know I can win an event I feel more confident to keep on aiming for the number one spot.”

His next stop on the world tour is the Fuerteventura Kite boarding PKRA Grand Slam in Spain at the end of the month.

After that he will return to his hometown, Mount Maunganui, for a few months before taking his talent to China.

Careless disposal of ashes spark call-outs A spectacular fire, believed to be caused by a smouldering cigarette butt, that destroyed a Merivale garage last week has sparked another warning to be extra careful when disposing of smokes and ashes.

The careless and incorrect disposal of ashes is one of the main causes of fires in the Western Bay of Plenty, says Tauranga senior station officer Phil Price.

“People will clear out a fire place or a log burner of the ashes and they’ll put the ashes in a plastic container or

cardboard box at the backdoor.

“What actually happens is the ashes haven’t gone out completely and they’ll ignite the container they have been put in.”

The same can be said for incorrectly throwing away cigarette butts which may still be alight, or hot.

Phil says sometimes people will even put them in a rubbish bag or in the shed, and some hours later they ignite, causing a fire similar to the Merivale garage callout.

“We advise people to put ashes in a steel bucket or put them in the garden and put the garden house on them.

Careless disposal of ashes from fires in the wintertime is something we get every year.”

Phil says unattended cooking is another of the most common causes of house fires every year, along with placing heaters too close to flammable objects.

Robbery at Brookfield vets Three Tauranga people have been arrested and charged with robbing the Brookfield Veterinary Centre armed with weapons on Wednesday evening.

Police say a woman and a man entered the clinic at the shopping centre on Otumoetai Rd about 5.25pm armed with blunt-edged weapons.

Tauranga Police senior sergeant Carl Purcell says the pair threatened one of the staff members at the shop before getting away with a small amount of

property and cash. Police later stopped a vehicle on Bureta Rd and arrested three Tauranga people.

A 23-year-old man, and two women, aged 17 and 26 years old, appeared in Tauranga District Court on Thursday charged with aggravated robbery.

Zespri board unchanged

Two outspoken contenders have failed in their bids to win election to the Zespri board at its annual meeting at Baycourt this week.

Robert Knyvett, who campaigned on achieving better returns for green growers, and Tom Wilson, who had been critical of Zespri’s handling of the Chinese customs case, didn’t manage to unseat chairman Peter McBride and board member Bruce Cameron at Wednesday’s election.

Peter was returned with an 87.56 per cent majority and Bruce with 72.73 per cent.

Baker top pie maker

Bethlehem baker Pat Lam is once again a gold pie maker, winning a supreme award for his vegetarian pie stuffed with stir fry vegetables, roast pumpkin, potato and kumura in spinach cream sauce.

Pat, who owns Patrick’s Pies in Bethlehem, won six out of 10 awards for his pies at the 2013 Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards in Auckland this week.

Pat’s mince and gravy pie received a silver award, along with his chicken and vegetable.

His mince and cheese and seafood pies were awarded bronze, while his bacon and egg got a highly commended.

Maori Matakana claim

Maori are working toward reclaiming ownership of Panepane Point – a section of Matakana Island opposite Mauao on the Tauranga Harbour entrance.

Matakana hapu and Ngaiterangi iwi have been involved in more detailed discussions with the Western Bay of Plenty District Council over the 200ha piece of land since early 2012, a report to this week’s meeting of the council’s Te Komiti Maori reveals.

The good fight As a young girl Carole Long developed a love for the natural world on the many trips she accompanied her father on to national parks and reserves.

“I got that conservation ethic from my father who worked with Lands and Surveys,” says Carole, who has just been named a Distinguished Life Member of Forest and Bird for her life-long work to protect the environment after 34 years membership.

“It was a big surprise. I’m not quite sure what I’ve done to deserve this. In actual fact I’ve got just as much out of it myself as I’ve given.

“You learn such a lot about different things, meeting people and learning that you can stand up and make a difference.”

Anybody active in helping protect the Western Bay’s unique environment has probably crossed Carole’s path.

The former Invercargill girl was inspired by the success of the Save

Manapouri campaign in the 1970s which saved an area close to her heart, saying it was the first environmental campaign she was aware of.

“It made me aware that if we stood up we could make a difference. Things don’t just have to happen.”

Since her environmental awakening Carole has got involved in many campaigns and projects around the Western Bay, including helping set up and drive many community action groups like the Maketu Ongatoro Wetland Society and the Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust which has helped the Oropi virgin bush reserve recover.

“It’s been brilliant. It’s been great.

The change to the forest in that time has been incredible.”

For many years she has also been lobbying local councillors, speaking at hearings and organising branch planting and weeding working bees. Carole’s latest focus is working with the community to modify a proposal for a cycleway through the Papamoa sand dunes.

Otanewainuku kiwi fund boost Plans to restore Otanewainuku Forest’s kiwi population have been given a boost with an $8000 grant earmarked to cover the cost of shifting breeding pairs to the site.

Otanewainuku Kiwi Trusts’ fundraising committee member Carole Long welcomes the grant from BNZ’s Kiwis for Kiwi fund, saying it will make a huge difference for the voluntary-run body.

Carole says almost all of the $60,000 in annual funds, needed to operate the trust, went towards pest control on 1000 hectares of forest, leaving little left – without this grant – for the cost of translocating kiwis. She estimates the

$8000 will be enough to recover two breeding pairs.

“It would have been a struggle to do this without the grant, so it’s going to make a big difference.”

But Carole says tracking down and recovering breeding pairs is easier said than done, requiring kiwi dogs to track them and for them to be in the right condition to shift. An attempt to recover breeding pairs from Maungataniwha in the Urewera’s last month was fruitless after the recovery team found the breeding pairs were already nesting. Carole says it will be about six months before they can try again.

The kiwis, which they hope to

get from unprotected sites in the eastern Bay of Plenty, will help establish a core population of adult birds to provide an anchor for juveniles. The young kiwis will be released into the forest at about 12 months old, to dramatically increase their survival chances, after being raised at Kiwi Encounter in Rotorua.

Meanwhile, the trust is calling for volunteers to roll up their sleeves and work in the forest to prepare for the annual blitz on possums and rats before the breeding season in spring – the first workday is on Sunday (9am2pm). For details go to: www.

Brushing teeth pays off The bright lights and big cities of the film industry could be the future for eight young Pyes Pa School children who have taken out the Colgate Creative Challenge this month.

The six and seven-year-old students spent about 15 hours, spread across five weeks, completing a three-minute film showing others how fun it is to brush their teeth.

Their film has won the school $1000 to spend on art supplies, sports gear or music equipment.

During planning stages, students sought advice from their visiting dental

nurses about how to care for their teeth and mouths to ensure they were correctly looking after their teeth.

Then, they incorporated their findings into the video clip and took turns to film and edit a final version.

Organiser Demelza Pendergrast says the children put a lot of time and effort into making the film and winning is “just the cherry on top”.

“The learning which occurred throughout the process was invaluable.”

Demelza says the challenge is a great way to remind children of the importance of oral health.

Hitting high notes

A strong musical talent in Bethlehem’s Lee family has both Dominic and Anna in the running for the next Bay of Plenty Symphonia Rising Star Award. Photo by Daniel Hines.

At the highly acclaimed International Viotti Valsesia Competition in Varallo, Italy, Dominic beat talented musicians from around the globe to be the overall winner – achieving the highest mark of 98/100. Anna was again close behind him with 96/100, winning first prize in her age group.

“I was pretty nervous – but I knew that I would do OK because I had heaps of people praying for me,” says Dominic, whose strong Christian belief helps motivate him.

While in Italy they competed at the Padova International Music Competition before the Seoul National Music competition in Korea. The pair came first and second in their respective categories at both events.

They are now practising for their next big focus – the Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s risings stars competition in September, where Anna and Dominic, comprise half of the four talented young musicians vying for the region’s top honour. Each finalist will play a solo with the orchestra.

In January, Year 11 student Dominic plans to head off to university to study music – another step towards his goal of becoming a world famous soloist.

After performing their way around international music competitions since June, Tauranga’s Dominic and Anna Lee have continued their winning form since returning home.

Only hours after arriving back from Korea last week they were on stage at Baycourt, competing in the Tauranga Festival of Performing Arts. It was another good night for them – with Dominic, 15, winning the top two instrumental music awards including the major instrumental programme class with his cello performance, beating musicians almost six years his senior.

Anna, 13, was close behind Dominic, being highly commended in the concerto competition and winning her age group class on the violin.

For Dominic, the passion for strings began at eight when he went to a cello concert with his mother. He can still clearly recall the experience.

“My mum took me to a cello concert and I really liked the sound for some reason, so I asked my mum if I could start learning that instrument.

“I don’t know what it was but I just wanted to keep practising and practising. I just loved it.”

These days he spends two-three hours a day practising, increasing to five hours a day before competitions.

Just clowning around Turning boys into men – it’s a passion for Tauranga Iconz leaders Stu Thompson and Richard Harkness.

But after many years’ involvement with children and youth development programmes they both know there is always more to learn.

Next week the pair, who are developing better programmes for the updated form of Boys Brigade, fly to London for a week-long Global Boys’ Brigade conference before visiting other Christian youth programmes in Europe.

“We want to bring back new ideas and challenges for our older lads,” says Richard.

Both men have been busy fundraising towards the three-week trip’s $6500-each cost.

On Saturday Richard took a novel approach to the challenge with a sponsored ‘walk-eat-athon’ marathon, walking around the Mount 10 times, eating a banana split each lap.

“I wouldn’t have wanted to have any more,” says Richard, who described it as a long day – taking nine and a half hours to complete with him walking most laps with families.

Richard says the challenge was chosen

because it was a little crazy and captured the imagination of sponsors – and now he is in no hurry to have another banana.

This Tuesday, Stu, also the Iconz national director, takes on his alter ego ‘Skyte the clown’, to put on a fundraising show. Stu says nobody expects numbers to return to their peak Boys’ Brigade’s statistics of the 1970s, partly because group numbers are now limited because of challenges attracting voluntary leaders, but he says numbers

are continuing to grow.

“I think it’s because we have realised what boys need and enjoy, and we’ve written programmes that guys enjoy running as leaders.

“Boys want blood, mud, water, smoke, fun and speed – but we are always looking to make it better.”

It seems they also like a little clowning around. Stu will put on his clown show at St Peter’s in the City on Tuesday at 6pm. Gold coin donation entry.

Alex proud to be a Kiwi Standing 5529km away from the Bay of Plenty on the beaches of the Tarawa Atoll, Kiribati, Alex Reid has never been more proud to be a Kiwi.

The Higgins Contractor Ltd regional manager recently returned from a whirlwind five day observation mission where he studied what it takes to be a New Zealand Defence Force reservist in the Pacific Islands.

As part of Pacific Partnership, a large scale multinational operation designed to provide real world help to Pacific Island people, Alex viewed a series of humanitarian activities across the island – ranging from maintaining the Friendship Bridge, removing a causeway and renovating Kiribati Teachers’ College.

Alongside nations including Australia, Canada and the United States, the defence force is taking a lead role on the island in establishing, until recently, unavailable basic facilities for its residents.

“Man was I proud to be a Kiwi,” says Alex. “It’s just outstanding

because we have limited resources, but our can-do attitude to get the business done is outstanding.

“It seems they have the cart before the horse.”

With the atoll carrying the highest population of the Kiribati Republic (28,802) and suffering significant overpopulation, poor water quality and inadequate sewage facilities, the work of the defence force is essential, he says.

Witnessing low-grade hospital facilities, and staying in the island’s top hotel – where there was no hot water for two days of the trip –

meant returning home had never been more satisfying for Alex.

“To come home and get a tap that can turn on, it gives you a different perspective on life and an appreciation of what we take for granted.

“For those reservists who have taken time away from their New Zealand employers, the experience and training that is gained is certainly an advantage to those individuals and their respective employers on their return to civilian life.

“This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me.”

Tauranga Synchronised Swimming Club’s Dolphins, aged 7-11, are competing to the ‘Chicken Dance’ this weekend.

Bringing it home Tauranga’s synchronised swimmers are hoping to make a big splash on the sporting scene when the city hosts the North Island Synchronised Swimming Championships for the first time in five years this weekend.

Tauranga Synchronised Swimming Club chair Shirley Hooper says the event is another local milestone for the sport – which is seeing tremendous growth in the area.

“We have 23 swimmers [competing this weekend], which is phenomenal for us. We’ve grown a lot in the past few years. It’s very exciting.”

The championships will run alongside the North Island interschool championships at Baywave this weekend, with the best events for public viewing happening on

Saturday afternoon from 2.30pm and Sunday 9am-12pm, says Shirley.

“On Saturday afternoon we get into Tauranga’s top swimmers, who are competing in solo and duet events. That’s our showcase really.”

Under the coaching of an Argentinian synchronised swimmer, who placed 17th in world championships five years ago, the club’s junior division has been rapidly expanding.

The Dolphins, aged 7-11, will compete in the weekend’s event, swimming to the Chicken Dance.

“They’re just adorable, they’re so enthusiastic,” says Shirley. “But it’s nice for them to be coached by an international coach – they’re getting a really good grounding so as they go on they’ll do really well.”

For a sport that often meets scrutiny, Shirley says the swimmers train incredibly hard, and as they move up the divisions, train up to 16 hours a week.

“The core body strength and endurance required is amazing.

Apparently at the Olympics they’re second only to marathon runners with their endurance.”

While this weekend’s event is not yet at Olympic standard, Shirley hopes the region will soon become a fighting force nationally in the growing sport.

“We’ve got a big contingent coming through. This is our biggest team ever.”

Prime viewing at the event is 3-5pm on Saturday, or 9am-1pm on Sunday at Baywave in Mount Maunganui.

Pinterest inspires craft classes for Bay A new craft club inspired by popular website Pinterest is launching next month, offering weekly lessons for colourful, creative projects.

In each 1.5hour class, participants will learn and make at least one Pinterest-inspired project – such as camera straps, dip-dyed candles and terrariums for $20.

At the end of each class, participants can take home what they make. Each class is run twice – and every 12 weeks a whole new series of projects, from vintage to modern, will be announced.

Highlighted were the bad effects of storm water entering the wastewater system all over town, overloading pipes and the two treatment plants. If too much storm water enters the wastewater system it simply overflows.

Chapel St overflows go straight into the harbour but at Te Maunga there can be up to 10 days’ holding capacity in the ponds. It’s another elephant in the room for ratepayers if or when we get torrential rain and the plants overflow. Solution is to stop the storm water entering the wastewater system.

Some might even consider it boring. We considered the less than exciting draft Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty district Local Alcohol Policy for your consultation last week; and this week we had the wastewater management review committee, made up of four Iwi representatives and four elected members. It won’t be boring – but will be spectacular for our community if anything happens to stop the wastewater disposal process. It’s an even bet that most people send their wastewater (sink, show, bath, toilet) down the gurgler without a thought.

This committee was set up as part of the 35-year resource consent issued by the regional council to discharge treated effluent into the ocean, about 750 metres offshore from the sludge ponds at the Mount, down by Te Maunga.

It’s a large pipe extending offshore. This special committee, required by the regional council who issued the consent, also administers a $250,000 “environmental mitigation and enhancement fund” as another part of the consent conditions. So, $130,000 was approved for Monaaki Te Awanui Charitable Trust and $26,710 to Nga Potiki a Tamaphore Trust for research designed to comply with environmental mitigation and enhancement – mainly directed at any effects the sludge ponds might be having on Rangataua Bay (the estuary of Welcome Bay). The terms have already been drafted by specialist consultants. This leaves about $90,000 for any actual work that may be needed. Staff told us: “the work would include outlining cultural effects, giving council a greater understanding of what effects what we do have on Maori culture”.

That matter – the future of who will own and control New Zealand water systems – continues to bubble along (pun intended) just below the surface. Privatisation, corporatisation or some other form of “isation” is very much on the investment; and government vultures list of undone rorts to perpetrate on the long-suffering public, in my opinion. Locally staff are considering amalgamation or shared water supply services – in the interests of sustainability and economy. Watch out for all the buzz phrases and weasel words that will clearly

Multiple pseudonyms

I received an email about something in this column where the writer said he disagreed with what was written. What I wrote was not necessarily my personal view but you should know what’s really going on – and that’s one reason I do this column.

But at least the writer did sign his real name. Last week, Bob Jones did an article using anonymous writers and pseudonyms.

He termed some of them as anonymous ranters. The reversion to anonymity to comment, attack and slag off is so prevalent on the internet, and is a retrograde step in society. If you’ve got an opinion that’s worthwhile you denigrate your opinion by not signing your real name. Who knows how many pseudonyms one individual has?

I am aware of one contributor to public political forums who has at least six pseudonyms, and often has conversations online between his various pseudonyms.

One method is to pressurise the wastewater pipes, just like the Southern Pipeline is pressurised. Only small pressure is required to keep storm water out. No-one is using reclaimed water anymore. Omanu Golf Course, the airport and Sulphur Point are reticulated but it’s too hard and too expensive.

For instance, you can only use reclaimed water (that’s treated effluent water that otherwise would be discharged) when there’s no-one around. Say between midnight and dawn. Many years ago all hell broke loose when a gypsy caravan fair got sprayed at Sulphur Point in the early hours. They were supposed to have vacated that day but had stayed on overnight. The Health Department has strict rules on reclaimed water use that may be too strict. The other issue is that prime water, direct from the processing plants, is cheaper – go figure.

As we went to press, council was considering allocation of event funding for 2013/14 for flagship events, and allocation of remaining funds to major and small events.

Consideration is done in ‘public excluded’ to preserve commercial privacy. Outcomes are made public and I’ll let you know next week.

There is about $220,000 of your ratepayer money available here. A review of this 10-year-old-plus process is underway with a view to have something more relevant, with private sector funding input.

Maori claim on Panepane, talks continuing The Western Bay of Plenty District Council is involved in talks with local iwi over the return of Panepane Point to Maori ownership.

Matakana hapu and Ngaiterangi iwi have been involved in more detailed discussions with the Western Bay of Plenty District Council for more than a year with talks now at the stage of suggesting how the handover of 200ha on the Matakana Island side of the harbour entrance is to be accomplished.

The preferred option for Maori is for the full return of title, subject to the guarantee of public access and joint management with the Western Bay council, via a Reserve Management Plan according to a report to the council this Friday.

The suggestion is for a staged approach, starting with a joint governance/ management approach via a Reserve Management Plan. The hearings process for the plan will include joint representatives of iwi and council on the panel.

The intention is to develop a draft Reserves Management Plan by December 2013, which includes reference to Panepane Point’s future ownership.

A Reserve Management Plan, which is required regardless of ownership options, is up for adoption by the new council in early 2014. Any transfer in ownership will require

a process of public consultation, and this will influence the direction that councillors take in respect of ownership. The best time for this is as part of the annual plan process for 2014/15. This will allow sufficient time for the respective parties to complete the necessary actions, regarding the governance structure and reserve management plan.

The land is the site of key Port of Tauranga navigation markers.

Ownership was transferred from the harbour board to the Western Bay of Plenty District Council in 1989’s local government reforms.

“I guess the crown, at that time, took the view there was no need to

hand land back if it was still required for a public use,” says Ngai Te Rangi rununga chairman Charlie Tawhiao.

“The crown took a fairly liberal view of what a public work was in those days. Anything the public wanted to do was public work and was never challenged.”

Maori concerns about the long term future of their former lands were confirmed when the Tauranga City Council proposed selling off the May St reserve in 2011 to retire debt.

“It was about that time we became aware councils were going to come under increasing pressure in future to dispose of land that the

community believes are public reserves, but in the interest of clearing debt, [being] the economic argument,” says Charlie.

“We figured things like Panepane, the recreation reserve on Mauao will be secured in the long term pubic interest by title transfer, because we will never sell it. Like Mauao, we will never sell it.

Neither can we pick it up and take it anywhere.”

They see it as an opportunity for the district council to show some leadership in terms of returning the property to representatives of its former owners. “The council didn’t pay for the land, so it’s not losing anything by returning it.”

Winston’s family regret

After spending 20 years arguing and defending economic policies of the nation, New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says he only has two regrets.

Not spending enough time with local party representatives and leaving little time for friends and family.

“There are always huge regrets. You will not be successful in any calling unless you know how to build on your mistakes.

Time consuming

“The biggest regret is being so busy to be not able to spend more time with your workers around the country; and

second [is] to have so little time available for your friends and indeed family.

Those are the only two regrets I have.”

NZ First was born on July 18, 1993, after Winston decided to step away from the National Party due to conflicting opinions on economic policies.

Years of success

Twenty years on, the party has seen the success of some economic policies including the Gold Card and free health care for children under six years old.

In celebration of the party’s 20th birthday, Winston fronted a crowd of about 50 Tauranga supporters at the Omanu Bowling Club last Sunday.

Mindful skills for relaxing mums Classes offering relaxing, natural coping mechanisms for busy mums are proving successful in Tauranga.

Run by couple Grant and Natasha Rix, their Mindful Living classes are based on international scientific research into the benefits of mindfulness and how it can lead to positive life changes.

Having studied and practised mindfulness and meditation since 1999, and taught the process in Tauranga since 2008, the couple have turned their skills into a class for busy mums.

“People on the Mindfulness for Wellbeing courses learn how to give their full openhearted attentiveness to what is immediately occurring physically and mentally, within and around us,” they say.

“This leads to reduced stress and anxiety and increased happiness and wellbeing.”

The Mindful Mums course provides simple everyday mindfulness practices for busy mums to increase coping skills and reduce stress including body awareness, breathing meditation and mindful communication.

“Mums, especially new mums or women dealing for

the first time with more than one child, have a lot to juggle and sometimes it can all become very stressful.

“We help to relax them and give them the tools to remain at ease, and stress-free.”

The couple’s classes have been proving popular among mothers in the city, and

they are encouraging others to give it a go.

“By staying calm and not anxious, you can be there more for your children, and also have the skills to help others who might be struggling too.”

For example, I recently created a programme for someone with MS and she has noted a distinct improvement in her energy and general wellbeing. I have had the same reports from people with Parkinson’s.

We cannot greatly impact these disease processes but we can help with the often crushing fatigue, and improve real quality of life.

I add CoQ10 either as a separate patented US sourced product or as part of my own energy formula with CoQ10, B vitamins, resveratrol, lipoic acid and many other energy co factors.

Dancing to a new tune

Troubled youths from across Tauranga City are being given the chance to ‘stand up’ and right their wrongs in a non-conflicting way, thanks to a new foundation.

The newly formed AntiBullying/Suicide Prevention Foundation (ABS) is looking to help stamp out the first step in what can be described as a downward spiral for many teens, led by bullying and suicide.

able to connect with the youth and the local community.

Mel established ABS two months ago in Welcome Bay after relocating from her home town of Whanganui earlier this year.

“I wanted to help the kids. It’s a chance to get them off the streets and out of that mind-set.”

Currently running a ‘stand up campaign’, ABS has 25 people, aged between 12 and 24, attending the programme twice a week.

Through the meetings, ABS is able to help its members express their emotions in non-conflicting methods along with instilling confidence, motivation, selfdiscipline and leadership.

“What originally started as a Welcome Bay initiative has spread by word of mouth with people travelling from Mount Maunganui, Otumoetai and Arataki.

They come from all over,” says Mel. On August 2, the Funk Famz Dance Crew – members of ABS – is hosting a show at Welcome Bay Hall in support of the not-for-profit organisation; and to generate awareness throughout the community.

There will also be a number of music artists keen to show their support while Mel is doing a presentation on her life, how bullying affected her and the changes she has made.

“I’ve had a troubled background which all started through the bullying. First I was bullied then I became the bully. I also lost my brother to suicide.”

An eye for photography?

Photography talent from Tauranga’s students is being sought for the 2013 Student Photography Exhibition, presented by Tauranga Arts Festival.

Intermediate and high school students with a photographic eye can win their share of $3500 in the annual competition where a panel of judges will select first prize and runner-up winners in each age and subject category.

The winning images will then be produced for an exhibition that will be installed in Baycourt for the duration of the Tauranga Arts Festival from October 24 – November 3.

At the conclusion of the festival the images will be donated to the Tauranga Hospital for display in its public areas.

Going for gold - or so the story goes Gone are the days of sticking with the same job from school leaver through to gold watch – or so the story goes.

Career advisors now tell us we should expect to change career direction five times in our working lives, but one man who hasn’t got the memo is Steve Harmens from Broncos Outdoors.

After more than 41 years he still has no plans to find another job, saying only half-jokingly he doesn’t know what else he could do.

“It’s all I’ve done since I left school.

I’m too old to start something new – and I still really enjoy it. It’s about helping people really.”

The team at the legendary sports store affectionately describe him as their own living legend, but the modest co-owner bats away the compliment – describing himself as just one of the team. After getting his School Certificate, sports-mad Steve was looking for a part-time job at what was then still called AJ Branch’s.

“Bronco himself told me he was only looking for someone full-time so I pleaded with my mother and she

eventually gave in.”

The all-round sportsman played representative soccer, tennis and table tennis, along with basketball at various points. These days Steve is more likely to be ocean fishing than playing at Otumoetai Tennis Club, but is equally happy selling all sports equipment on the shop floor.

During the years he has seen lots of changes in the shop, including changes in ownership - from professional golf teacher Bronco to Howard Tuck in 1975, whose son Ben and his son Glenn now are co-owners – and the ‘big family’ of generations of customers. “I’ve got customers who have been coming in for years and years from back in Wharf Street and they’re bringing in their kids and so on.”

A passion and talent for sports has been passed on to Steve’s three daughters, who have all been good tennis players – including Janicke who represented the Western Bay – while

Vanessa played volleyball for New Zealand. Steve is enthusiastic about encouraging others to get into sports, but shies away from giving out career advice when asked if he thinks some people change jobs too often. “Each to their own. Change if you’re not happy, but I think if you stick your job out you get better and better so - as long as it’s exciting for you it makes sense to stay.”

The new model begins August 5 and tutor Olivia Borrie says the course is made up of three days in-class, one day work experience and one day of self-directed study each week.

“It’s a rewarding and interesting course, but students are going to have to work hard and do a lot more self-learning.”

Olivia is excited about the new model and hopes it will add value

to the community stakeholders as well as students’ experiences.

She is seeking students who are serious about the industry and will make the most of the course – where graduates can go directly into work as junior administrators, receptionists, office assistants, and more. For those who discover a love of learning, graduates gain automatic acceptance into the Business Administration and Computing Level 3 course.

“I’m looking for someone really passionate about administration,” says Olivia. “It might be mothers who want to break into the indus-

try or school leavers, but ones who really want the career. I want people who are committed to completing the work experience.”

The course covers customer service, communication, word processing, computing, employment skills, and general administration procedures.

Olivia says it’s her goal to get all her students employed in the industry, and she’s ready to get started. “This is a great opportunity for those trying to gain employment in the administration industry and I look forward to helping them succeed.”

Mother Earth providing some magic While the earth is still trembling from recent events and there are record high temperatures overseas, the eco-system reminds us all that our sometimes fragile existence on this planet is reliant on Mother Earth and what it provides.

All too late we realise the environmental mistakes of the past; and are embracing greener technology like wind power instead of nuclear power.

Of course with a business called Another Green World, necessity has meant utilising recycled containers for growing Mother Nature’s fantastic array of nutrient-packed micro greens.

And now that the plants have taken over my life – with their fantastic flavours and essential raw energy I feel more enthused to share the love.

The tiny morsels grow, and are ready to eat in between eight and 14 days.

And any left after go on the become plants for the garden or food for the chickens.

As for the chickens, I hear another rooster so it’s time for another curry – the remaining girls will then perhaps start laying green eggs.

Yes, I have Ancora chickens – feisty little South

American green egg layers and they are about to lay.

same as any other free range children fed on steady diet of micro greens and gourmet restaurant scraps. Soon I’ll be able to hook up a radio in the chook house which might help, just like in

the green house for the plants, and have it turned to 87.8FM for the sounds of the world.

For this week’s recipe I am using fresh free range eggs and microgreens.

Feta and Microgreen Souffle Ingredients: 300ml milk 300g feta 50g butter 50g flour ¼ cup microgreens 4 large free range eggs 10g powdered parmesan Sea salt and pepper Method: Grease suitable oven-proof dishes well with butter and bring milk to a simmer. Melt butter in heavybase sauce pan over low heat. Stir in flour and cook for a few seconds, then gradually stir in the milk a little at a time. When sauce is smooth and very thick, continue to cook for two minutes, stirring constantly.

Take off the heat and add egg yolks, mix well then crumble in most of feta while continuing to mix.

Season well with salt and pepper and set aside.

In a separate clean bowl, whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt until you can turn the bowl upside down without them falling out.

Carefully fold one or two spoonful’s of the egg white into the cheese sauce to lighten it, and sprinkle over the microgreens, which can be lightly cut into smaller

bits with scissors. Fold in the remaining egg whites then carefully spoon half the mixture into the dishes. Sprinkle the parmesan powder into the centre, avoiding getting too close to the edge. Top up with rest of the mixture. Run a wet finger around the edge of the ramekin or baking dish (this will allow the soufflé to rise unimpeded). Bake at 180-200 degrees Celsius for 20-30 minutes until golden brown, depending on the size of the baking dish.

It’s magic served as a light lunch or supper with fresh microgreens.

Student’s tasty creation a hit with public The young entrepreneurs behind a new kiwifruit snack bar are surprised at how fast their tasty creation is selling.

through the Young Enterprise Scheme, sold out (54 bars) at its first public sale this month, and is continuing to do well at markets across the city.

The #nombar is also selling at Tauranga Boys’ College, Tauranga Girls’ College and Papamoa College school canteens.

To help them with marketing and product development, the group has secured a partnership with Tauranga’s award-winning global export company Kiwifruitz– Kiwifruit Processing Company Ltd.

This is not the first time Otumoetai College has sprouted success in the food industry through the enterprise scheme.

The product was so successful, it won the group the prestigious Sales and Marketing award at the Young Enterprise Awards event in Wellington – one of 11 national awards 500 teams competed for throughout the year.

Papamoa’s new fuel addition opening Fast fuel efficiency is now at the fingertips of Papamoa residents following the opening of Gull’s latest unmanned petrol station.

Located on Parton Road, the unmanned station with eight car placements and four card readers, is set to join the 14 existing nationwide sites as part of the retailer’s move to the future of fuel efficiency.

Set down to open today at midday, the unmanned site has a storage capacity of 140,000 litres and has been constructed during the last three months.

Speaking earlier in the week, Gull retail development and sustainability manager Karl Mischewski says they are just waiting on certain certifications and approvals to come through.

“It’s just like a house. Everything needs to be ticked off and all the dangerous goods stuff has to have its I-s dotted and t-s crossed because that’s a pretty critical element.”

The site, suffering an early setback due to a drawnout resource consent process, will now offer fierce competition at the pump for motorists following the Government’s imposed petrol tax – seeing prices skyrocket to at least $2.24 per litre in some cases.

Gull, New Zealand’s first independent full retailer, also has unmanned sites in Merivale and Whakamaramara.

Karl says the Papamoa site seems a logical fit for residents as it will become the nearest service station between Te Puke and Fashion Island Shopping Centre.

Students make good company Budding friendships based on a shared love of helping others are putting smiles on the faces of many residents at Mitchell Court Rest Home.

As part of Otumoetai College’s ‘Adopt a Granny’ scheme, a group of six students visit the rest home on a weekly basis.

Coordinator Georgia Reynard says every Wednesday after school, she and five Year 10 students spend about an hour with the residents, sharing stories and keeping the residents company.

“I think it’s really good because the residents really love sharing their stories with the girls.

Nane Holthausen, Clara Lafont, Abraham Holthausen, Jade Gibson, Better Murphy, Shainia Ellingham, Georgia Reynard, and Kahu Te Kani.

“And I think it’s really good for the students just to hear all of their different life stories, it’s really interesting. It’s also really good for them to develop their social skills as well, spending time with them and chatting.”

The students hear lots of war stories and interesting life tales, she says.

Some of the students have formed special bonds with one or two of the residents and often go back to the rest home in their own time.

“But otherwise we try and get around to different residents each week just so we get a chance to speak to the majority of people who want to be spoken to.

“Most of them really enjoy it.”

The Year 13 student plans to join the air force when she leaves school, to become a medic.

“I just really like helping people and I think that’s a really good way to do it.”

Old should make way for young: yes or no?

Older people should leave the paid workforce to make way for younger workers – we often hear this argument.

Last year, a Herald article claimed that “old people have displaced more than 40,000 teenagers from jobs in the past five years as more choose to stay on in the workforce and employers shun youth for experience”.

This kind of argument was used to support early retirement policies in Europe and elsewhere, in the belief that this would lead to a reduction in unemployment. It has now been realised that this approach was unsustainable and the trend is now towards postponement of retirement age.

The “lump of labour” theory assumed that the amount of work available is fixed and static – that

the job market worked on a one-in, one-out basis.

But most economists now accept that this theory is a fallacy. Data now shows that keeping older people in the workforce is positively associated with employment of the young.

Why is this? The way to produce a prosperous and growing economy is to keep as much of the population as possible economically active. When more people are in work, people have more money to spend, and this creates more jobs. If all older people left the workforce, the loss of their spending power would wreck the economy and unemployment among all age groups would shoot up. (Source:Dr Judith

Regional council support for stream management Rural landowners in the Bay of Plenty can get help to improve water quality in the region through incentives, advice and other assistance from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.

Technical advice, help with writing management plans, and monetary grants towards agreed work are all available.

BOPRC Natural Resource Operations group manager Warwick Murray says the council applauded rural landowners making efforts to improve water quality and protect waterways such as Tauranga Harbour.

“We recognise there is both public and private good in protecting waterways, and we can provide incentives, support and advice to the rural landowners working to minimise the adverse impacts on land of their activities ,” says Warwick.

Incentives are available to all rural landowners to help fence waterways, repair erosion and establish trees (native or exotic) and shrubs within those areas that directly impact on water quality.

Special support is also being offered to landowners in Tauranga Harbour catchments in the form of extra financial help for stream works during the next 12 months for some rural landowners in the harbour catchment.

This additional assistance is available to control and repair stream bank erosion at sites identified as high risk. The support includes technical advice on repair work and a financial grant of

up to 100 per cent of costs, depending on the severity of erosion and budget availability.

Mullan’s on track for trans-Tasman drags With winter biting, most dragsters are wrapped up in sheds waiting for the tarmac to warm in spring – but not Craig ‘Fingrz’ Mullan’s car.

While Craig’s been quiet on the race front since the Nostalgia Drags in April he hasn’t been hibernating. After preparing his car ‘Nitro Ape’ for competition, he sent it off on a ship last week to Brisbane, which he will collect late next week ahead of his first stint racing in Australia.

Craig, and four drag-racing mates he is competing with, have dubbed themselves the Black Slicks as the national team.

“It’s a pretty cool feeling to be representing our country,” says Craig, who is excited to be wearing the silver fern.

“My only goal is to beat those bloody Aussies. I just want to go and have fun and run hard.”

The Black Slicks will be competing at two events in Queensland – starting with races on a 1/8th mile track in Warwick next Sunday in a trans-Tasman challenge, at the inland town south of Toowoomba, they are using as a chance to tune for the conditions.

When it comes to setting a specific drag time goal he is uncertain, saying “as far as times are concerned it’s all about getting the tune-up for their conditions”.

The main action follows the next

weekend at Willowbank Raceway in Ipswich, with the Cruzin magazine Nostalgia Nationals on August 11.

“There are a lot of Kiwis over there already dusting off their New Zealand flags for us,” says Craig, who along with his Black Slick mates is excited about racing for the country at the top international dragway.

Paper tackling Tauranga’s red light runners A paper introduced by the Government surrounding cameras on red lights will help Western Bay of Plenty Police tackle red light runners.

The position paper outlines how more red light cameras can be introduced to help reduce the number of casualties at signalised intersections.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says high risk intersections, including those controlled by lights, continues to be a focus of police.

“Western Bay of Plenty and Tauranga are over-represented in intersection crashes, that’s urban, rural and on the state highways.

“We regularly target the high risk intersections.”

In an operation run earlier this year, Tauranga Police fined six people in the span of one morning for running red lights at the intersection of Cameron Rd and 15th Ave. Each motorist was ticketed $150 for running a red light.

Ian says people need to pay attention while they are driving, as crashes can

happen at any time.

Associate Transport Minister Michael Woodhouse says the position paper paves the way for cameras to be used at intersections where an evidence-based benefit can be established.

Michael says red light running is a significant safety issue and evidence suggests red light cameras can prove an important tool to reduce injuries and save lives.

A red light camera trial that ran in Auckland between 2008 and 2010 showed an average 43 per cent reduction in red light running, and an average 69 per cent decrease in crashes attributable to red light running.

Current cameras require in-road sensors and manual collation of data. The Position Paper confirms that future cameras will have radar to detect red light running, and operate wirelessly to automatically send information to police.

A look inside Forrester’s Hall The Weekend Sun is profiling some of Tauranga’s historic places dotted around the city. This week reporter Zoe Hunter looks at a heritage building situated in the heart of Tauranga’s Historic Village Museum – Forrester’s Hall.

Once an area of scrub and willow swamp, Tauranga’s Historic Village Museum is today regarded as what would have once been an “impossible dream”.

Acting manager Michael Thomson says the museum gives an impression of a thriving, early colonial village, featuring cobblestoned streets framed by a cluster of original and replica buildings of the early historic village environment. “It’s ambience – it’s got a rhythm and pace that suits an old style village.” Nestled in the heart of the museum is Forrester’s Hall which carries a New Zealand Historic Places Trust Class 2 registration; and is listed on the city

plan schedule of built heritage sites. The Tauranga Historic Village Museum souvenir book ‘Take a Walk in Living History’ says Forrester’s Lodge Hall was constructed in 1908 on Spring St in Tauranga.

The hall was used to protect members in pre-social welfare days against family hardship. During 1936, St John Ambulance used the hall for cadet classes before vacating the building in 1952 to move to new premises in Cameron Rd. The hall then became a band room for the Tauranga Municipal Brass Band. In 1989 Tauranga City Council, which then owned the building, sold the land to the Tauranga Electric Power Board and the hall was moved to the Historic Village Museum on December 21, 1989, where it was restored.

Today, the hall is used for an afterschool care programme called ‘Lavender House’ where Michael says children of today get to be part of history.

“Having kids in their in an afterschool programme is a good continuing use.” Next week The Weekend Sun profiles the New Zealand Post Office on Harrington St.

Next weekend Bay of Plenty’s top builders swap their building belts for smart suits, when they line up against the best from the Central Plateau in an annual showdown.

The Master Builder House of the Year regional awards – which last year saw Bay of Plenty combine with the Central Plateau for the first time – has attracted 23 entries from across the expanded area, including 14 from the Western Bay. Regional awards coordinator Lani Christensen says the decision to combine the two areas has added an extra dimension to the awards, with the area’s top builders up against the best from a wider pool.

“I think it’s made the competition a bit tougher for our local builders.

Instead of just being the best in Tauranga they are

up against the best across the area.”

Lani says there was strong rivalry between builders from each area last year, and she expects the Western Bay builders to be flying the flag high again this year.

“The status of the awards is continuing to grow – and you can see why when you see the high standard of these homes.

There can be as little as 0.5 point between a Supreme Winner and the next house.”

A total of 14 golds, eight silvers and one bronze will be given out at next Saturday’s Bay of Plenty-Central Plateau regional awards.

“That gives you an idea about the high standard.”

The top scoring entries are in the running for the national awards in November, with builders aiming to emulate Riordan Construction which last year won the Renovation of the Year award.

It was the first time a Tauranga company has won a supreme award in the national competition’s history.

Tauranga builders competing in the awards include: Todd Grey Builder, Shaw Builders, Harwood Homes, Fowler Homes BOP, Jarrah Construction, Inside Out Design and Build, Oceanside Homes, Accurate Building BOP, GenX BOP/Jennian BOP, and Stonewood Homes.

The awards are being held at Wairakei Resort in Taupo on August 3.

Tauranga pair opening Chinese orphanage poverty-stricken children for the last year. The painting started after she woke in the night with a vision in her head of young child, “and I had to paint her”.

She also began going to the gym at 6am where’s she has been carrying 20kg planks on her back.

In December, the women fly to China, where they will spend six weeks setting up the orphanage. The Chinese Government has donated an empty building and items are already being

flown over in preparation. Two young babies have also been registered to join when they arrive.

Julie is appealing for any donations, of blankets, baby items or similar, that they can fly over before December.

She is also holding a quiz night on August 2 to help pay for her flights and costs while in China. The event is at Rosie O’Grady’s and tickets are $8.

Julie McGowan doesn’t know why, but she feels as if she’s been preparing for her upcoming trip to China for years – despite the split-second decision one month ago.

After losing her part-time job in June, the 46-year-old art student

has signed up to visit China in December where she will help fellow Tauranga resident Sandra King set up an orphanage.

“The day I lost my job I went to my mother’s a crying wreck, and they had a lady at the house, who she’d talked about for many years but I’d never met her.”Julie learned Sandra had previously lived in China for 20 years, and

was returning this year to set up her fourth orphanage in a small town called Ghendu.

“We just got talking, and I said I just have to go with you.

“She said to me: ‘be prepared to be a crying wreck for the first week’. But I feel like I’ve been preparing to go for years.”

Councillor’s Merivale centre questions announced intention to obtain some on-going commercial income off the ratepayers’ investment. Instead of fundraising, the community centre should first be seeking agreement in principle with the council and the community, says Murray. Merivale Community Inc chairman Michael Thomson says the centre’s aspirations have been clear since the development of the neighbourhood plan in the early 2000s.

“From our perspective

we have been clear for well over ten years that the community centre needed to be replaced or expanded to provide the opportunity for better services to the community,” says Michael.

“We made submissions along those lines to the council, saying if they bought that land we would be looking to build a new community centre when we could raise the money.”

The negotiations with council will take place during the fundraising

process, says Michael.

Doug Owens became involved as chairman of the building committee after recent meetings discussing the centre’s longer term aspirations.

When approached about his role, Doug Owens says he’s not involved with the politics.

“I’m just the chairman of the building committee. I’m just there to raise money. I’m not getting into the day-to-day politics of what’s going on,” says Doug.

Tauranga City councillor Murray Guy is questioning the Merivale Community Centre’s assumption of council approval for a development which he says involves about $800,000 worth of ratepayer input.

The centre recently announced that Bay of Plenty regional councillor Doug Owens has become chairman of the fundraising committee, being tasked with steering fundraising, design and building of a new Merivale Community Centre.

But Murray’s objection is the present community centre is on council land.

The neighbouring vacant lot was recently bought by the ratepayers at a cost of $330,000 – and together, Murray says the value is in the region of $800,000 if the public right of way separating the lots is included.

“They would have to buy that right of way, they couldn’t develop both,” says Murray.

“There isn’t a single aspect of their proposal that doesn’t require council and community buy-in.

That particular piece of public access has been conveniently left out.

“They couldn’t rebuild over both lots, as inferred by the press release, unless it incorporates both lots.”

Mount couple’s own little princess Claire and Richard Hutchinson were given a real honour when they welcomed their own little princess into the world on Monday.

Honor Isabel Hutchinson was born at 4.47pm on Monday, July 22, one of six babies born at Tauranga Hospital on the same day as the future king of England.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s new son was born in St Mary’s hospital in central London at 4.24pm (local time) on July 22.

Although the Mount Maunganui couple are

nothing like the royals, they say they now have their “own little princess” and are thankful they are not in the spotlight of the world’s paparazzi.

“She’s my little princess,” says Richard.

“I was just saying how lucky we are not to have any paparazzi around us.”

Either way the couple are not letting the birth of the royal baby steal their thunder.

A Tauranga company is taking a swing at raising $10,000 for Cure Kids by hitting off with a charity golf tournament on August 11.

The tournament is headlining a series of fundraising efforts by Mainfreight Tauranga, where staff have answered a challenge set by head office to raise the most money during August for the children’s charity’s annual Red Nose Day. Mainfreight Tauranga’s fundraising spokesman Grant Yeatman says the first major donation came from Omanu Golf

Club, donating the use of their field for the tournament, which means all money raised can go straight to Cure Kids.

An auction will take place during the tournament, where a t-shirt and golf glove, signed by young New Zealand golfer Lydia Ko, and an autographed photo are among donated items.

Grant has put together a six person team to manage the fundraising activities for the month and says a ball-point goal of $10,000 has been set.

“The golf fundraiser is a great way to get behind this charity and pull together our

community. “We have also organised with Rialto Cinemas to run a movie night to generate some more donations for Cure Kids.” They hope to secure a field of 144 golfers, who will play an Ambrose format.

Entry per player is $20, and Grant is appealing to businesses to each sponsor a corporate one of 18 holes for $300.

Items for the auction are also being sought.

Elizabeth’s journey from shame to strength A woman who unknowingly lived with chronic hepatitis C for 14 years is sharing her story, after being cured of the disease.

Elizabeth, now in her 50s and wishes to remain anonymous, says while her liver wasn’t too badly damaged, the diagnosis changed her life.

She visited her doctor after feeling extremely tired.

“I was told I had hepatitis C by a locum who interrogated me as to how long I’d had it, did I know this was potentially fatal, and I could die.

“To say I was shocked was an understatement.”

When her friends reacted to the news with ignorance, “I felt the presence of shame surround me”.

Ten years later, Elizabeth started treatment and began to feel empowered. “I was doing something about this and not allowing myself to be victimised by fear and shame anymore.”

Treatment was successful and Elizabeth is cured of hepatitis C. “I wept and danced and celebrated my heart out.”

Hepatitis C is spread through blood-to-blood

Dog attack in Bayfair On Tuesday last week, 16 July at 3.45pm in Russley Drive, my precious little three-legged Papillon was attacked by a very large dog, while she was on her lead at my feet. She was not able to survive her very deep wounds, and with great sadness, I lost her the next morning.

Whilst carrying her home, I had a bout of asthma, and I would like to use this notice to thank the young lady who walked most of the way home with me, to make sure I was okay. Thank you also, to the caring community that I live in, for your love and support.

To the owners of the dog responsible, if you didn’t know that you owned a dangerous dog before, you do now, and if it takes both of you to control it, it’s a bad situation. For goodness sake, if you care for your dog, please have the lead on your dog and buy it a muzzle.

It may save another dog’s life, and it could be yours.

And know that my homes is now filled with the “Sound of Silence.”

Mr Matthews should take care if he ventures out for a flat white in the Mount this summer – the very ones he rails against may well be serving him, and I’d hate to think what might “accidently” drop into his brew should he be recognised by an itinerant worker.

Dog owner charged over bite attack The owner of the dog that attacked a four-year-old boy leaving him in hospital with facial injuries is heading to court.

Tauranga City Council animal services team leader Brent Lincoln says a week long investigation produced sufficient evidence to charge the owner with being the ‘owner of a dog which attacked a person causing serious injury’.

The charge is under section 58 of the Dog Control Act and the dog will remain impounded until the outcome of the prosecution, says Brent.

The first hearing for the case is expected in early August.

Parliament that has one party telling its MPs in a conscience vote, that their names will be recorded beside that vote, so woe betide them if they challenge the party line.

And here, in our own Tauranga, the Council borrowing is completely nuts. (If we ran our own home finances like this, the Bank would have our homes so quickly it wouldn’t be funny.)

And who is to blame for all this mess? Well us, actually.

Because, you see, it’s really easy to have your rights and ignore any responsibilities. Just don’t tell us please.

The truth is not welcome any more. We prefer to stay blind to it, even though we know it won’t help in the end. Yes, we’re a funny lot.

Keep out of hotel deal Weekend Sun 19 July “Hotel project developments”.

Tainui Group Holdings are again looking at building a new hotel on the Durham St site in association with the Accor hotel group and TCC. I strongly advise TCC to keep right out of this deal, for if it goes belly up, as a number of Tainui projects already have, TCC ( ratepayers) will be left holding the baby.

Do we really need another large hotel and conference centre when already the large hotels in the city very rarely appear to experience full occupancy. This is a very big risk for TCC to take with, once again, money that does not really belong to them.

On top of that TCC is already over $400 million in debt so why take a further risk and make this debt much larger.Perhaps the new council in October will have different ideas.

Father and son in court

The Tauranga father and son accused of importing and supplying cocaine and methamphetamine returned to court last week.

Seth Evans, 21, and Joseph Evans, 50, appeared separately before Judge Robert Wolff on Friday, July 19, for call over hearings ahead of their trials to be held at the Rotorua High Court.

The pair is jointly charged with importing cocaine and methamphetamine, and possessing cocaine and methamphetamine for supply.

Seth Evans pleaded not guilty and was remanded on bail until September 12.

His father is scheduled to appear on August 16.

As their name indicates these are Boardwalks but in summertime and at weekends pedestrians have to contend with the often unpredictable and risky behaviour of cyclists,skateboarders, joggers and youngsters speeding on scooters.

These are surely not consistent with the purpose of a boardwalk. I hate to advocate anything that dampens anyone’s beachside enjoyment but these are accidents waiting to happen and some commonsense safety measures should be promulgated and enforced before these walks become intensively used in the summer season.

Oldeman and Lafferty were both further remanded in custody until their next appearance on August 5.

Johnson’s next appearance is set down for August 5.

Crash costs Council $500

Tauranga City Council is facing a $500 bill to repair a parking machine after a car crashed into it this week.

Police say the pay and display machine was hit by a car on Hamilton Street around 6.15pm on Monday.

Tauranga City Council transportation manager Martin Parkes says one side panel

of the machine will need to be replaced.

It will also involve repairs to the footpath as the machine needs to be removed to be repaired.

Computer hacker guilty

A Tauranga man admitted to hacking into his former employer’s computer system in what is being described as an “unusual case”.

Ashley Luke Neilson, 22, pleaded guilty to two counts of computer crime, one charge of theft, accessing a computer system without authority and damaging and interfering a computer system when he appeared in Tauranga District Court before Judge Christopher Harding on Tuesday, July 16.

He admitted to downloading some software belonging to Conway and Carpenter and couldn’t offer a reasonable explanation to why he downloaded the software.

Neilson will return to court for sentencing on August 26.

Losing the plot It seems to me that the Government is taking lessons for the TCC in losing the plot.

I refer to the upcoming banking measures where a bank can take money from our accounts when they get into financial difficulties.

The Govt is treating us with the usual contempt when they will not release the limit that can be taken.

There are three things that are rampant in NZ and Australia and they are greed greed and greed.

Now, a bank, like any business can falsify thier financial situation and in the greed that rules today a bank may think hmm if we claim we are in financial difficulties we can rake in for example say 20% of all the money depositors have in our bank and pay ourselves a nice fat bonuses next year.

One wonders why Mr Key and co can’t see that possibility. Further one may ask what right has any Govt to bring such a scheme into law they don’t support any other business in such a manner and thank God they don’t. Kiwis are notoriously bad savers so how will a

stupid move like this encourage Kiwis to save ?

People will start investing in other areas and may even force house prices up higher as folk look at investment properties as a safer bet than a bank.

Also the Govt now wants to increase its ability to spy on NZ in a subtle way at first, but what’s next by forcing phone companies to cooperate with our spy agencies.

One has to wonder what a NZ Govt has to worry about with Kiwis when it comes to a need to spy, most Kiwis don’t give a damn about the real world as long as they are Ok at home. I say that because of what successive Govts have imposed on NZrs without a whimper from the electorate, in other countries there would be riots. Then we have our less than beloved TCC that gets re-elected after just about breaking Tauranga which is a strong indicator of my comment about not caring much about what goes on around us.

Dog owners should lead by example Dog attack in Bayfair: On Tuesday last week, July 16 at 3.45pm in Russley Drive, my precious little three-legged Papillon was attacked by a very large dog, while she was on her lead at my feet. She was not able to survive her very deep wounds, and with great sadness, I lost her the next morning.

So after 9am there is no free parking from Mission St around the CBD for a kilometre to Fourth Ave. So shoppers go to the Malls for access to shops and parking.

Sometimes Devonport Rd and The Strand look deserted in the mornings. I think a special Express Bus would improve things.

I suggest a trial “Express” bus from Papamoa to the City, stopping only at Palm Beach Plaza and Bayfair, for the commuters’ hours of 8am to 9am for a 30 minute trip to replace the regular 55 minute bus trip.

An Express bus would let the cars stay home, for family shopping and children transport, it would free up city streets and be profitable at $100 for a full bus fares per trips, for Go Bus or a private bus company, if the change is publicised properly. So worth a trial?

Last chance to oppose change Why would NZ want a ‘Written constitution’ with the ‘Treaty of Waitangi ’enshrined in?

It is one more threat to our Democracy! It would not help hold Parliament to account.

It Would Do-nothing at all to stop Parliament slipping through legislation without NZ knowing about it.

NZ would need to investigate the 100 day facultative referendum system like Switzerlandto slow the system down and hold government to account so kiwis can have their say on legislation.

Once in place a ‘Written constitution’ can never be changed by Parliament- only by a select few Judges/ Lawyers! Liken it to the gun Law in America enshrined in a Written Constitution, which is the Bane of their life that cannot be changed - do we really want to go their?

Our ‘unwritten constitution’ is a very flexible and efficient system the envy of the world!

What about animal rights?

We are forever hearing about human rights but what about animal rights, when our country has sunk so low that they are still wanting to test recreational party drugs on defenseless animals when most countries have risen above that?

Science can tell the compounds of these drugs and then know whether it’s harmful or not without having to use animals.

For example we take advantage of the Beagle because of its trusting nature and use them to help us protect our borders, then give them a life of misery by testing these drugs on them. Then they either get put down or sold off to people

dishonestly by not telling the people who pay for them what they have been used for and then still end up having to be euthanized for the behavior and health issues inflicted upon them. There would

Cr Faulkner’s statement in The Weekend Sun July 19 is incorrect in that ‘D’Urville’s ship the ‘Astrolabe’ never hit Astrolabe Reef.

His published diary (in the library’s Sladden collection) indicates there was a close encounter on 16 Feb 1827. The missionary schooner ‘Herald’ also had a close encounter on 7 April 1828.

The ‘Nellie’ hit Astrolabe Reef on 13 January 1878, but she was sailed off. She filled with water and could not reach Tauranga. The Captain tried to reach the beach on Motiti Island, but she was wrecked on the rocks. Nellie’s demise is recorded in the Register of Shipwrecks. A judicial enquiry was held in Tauranga.

When duty calls they respond: One has to wonder at the people

from Red Cross, who deliver meals on wheels, some for over 20 years in all weather.

The last thing on their minds is to get any type of award for doing so. The ladies who go to hospitals to arrange flowers, bringing cheer to patients, and the many other services, health shuttles to medical appointments etc. Without such volunteers society would be much poorer. One has to say, thank -you to people who put others before themselves, and many of them have their own problems to cope with,but when duty calls they respond, always. Tauranga Red Cross has an emergency team, ready to go in the event of any emergency.

Numbers do not add up:

R.E. Stephens wrote of the compulsory co-governance boards which the government has decreed are to be set up on all regional and district boards.

This legislation is so far-reaching that surely it should have been taken to the ratepayers to be given the option of co-governance - and as John Key well knows, it would not have had a dog’s show of being implemented. Now it appears that 15% of the population, with a vote count of less than 2% at the last general election, will have 50% of the council decision-making, and we, the ratepayers will be stuck with the continuing expense - forever!

Democratically, the numbers do not add up.

Perhaps, a call to our Race Relations Conciliator on behalf of the other 85% of the population who will pay for ever for this racist legislation.

ATTENTION ALL TECT CONSUMERS: WE WANT YOUR VIEWS... ...on TECT’s continued ownership of shares in TrustPower TECT IS THE OWNER OF 33% OF THE SHARES IN TRUSTPOWER TECT has a policy of conducting at least every five years, a formal review of its shareholding in TrustPower, which involves consultation with Consumers.

It is now 5 years since the last of such reviews was undertaken. In preparation for the ownership review, Trustees engaged PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to provide advice on the merits of TECT retaining its holding in TrustPower.

PricewaterhouseCoopers has advised that: TrustPower has historically been a very high performing Company with excellent capital appreciation and good dividend returns.

TECT’s level of influence in TrustPower would not materially alter if it was to reduce its shareholding from 33% to 25.1%.

TRUSTEES PROPOSE THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION.

The concentration of TECT’s investment in TrustPower though contrary to prudent portfolio principles has served the Trust well to date.

That TECT retains its 33% shareholding in TrustPower subject to continued monitoring with the right for Trustees to sell 6.55% of the shareholding in TrustPower if Trustees consider it is in the best interests of TECT and its Consumers.

TECT should actively monitor its TrustPower shareholding to identify any significant events that signal that a share sell down would be appropriate.

TrustPower continues to have excellent prospects.

PROPOSALS FOR REFORM OF THE ELECTRICITY INDUSTRY Since the date of the PwC Report some political parties have announced an intention to reform the Electricity Industry through the compulsory acquisition of electricity by a State Agency. Insufficient detail has been provided to enable the impact of such proposal to be evaluated, but it could affect the value of TECT’s shareholding in TrustPower and affect the dividends payable by TrustPower.

In view of such proposal, Trustees reaffirm their ability to sell 6.55% of the shareholding in TrustPower if Trustees consider it is in the best interests of TECT and its Consumers.

TECT seeks the views of Consumers on the above Resolution.

Blues rock trailblazers Swamp Thing are coming back to town. They’re currently on the road somewhere on a nationwide tour (they were in Christchurch last week) are will be passing through Tauranga and playing a one-off show at Mount Maunganui’s Brewer’s Bar on no less than International Blues Music Day, Saturday August 3. I’ve written several

times about Swamp Thing so, just to recap: they are a duo comprising drummer Michael Barker (ex-John Butler Trio) and guitarist Grant Haua. They recently released their second album and have played a lot of cool gigs, including the support slot for Tim Finn on his last Aussie tour and several high-profile festivals in Oz. They are loud and percussive and brilliant.

It’s not just Swamp Thing on August 3. The band have assembled a full night of music for your listening pleasure. Kicking off - $15 on the door, show starts at 8.15pm – will be Vodafone Music Awards finalist John Michaelz, currently bopping round the North Island on his “Sing For Your Supper” Tour. He has just recorded a new album, Nomad Blues, at Whakamarama’s Soundtree Studio, so this gig could be the first chance to get your hands on it.

He’ll be followed by Sarah Spicer, a fantastic singer/ songwriter now living in Waihi. Her recently-released album, Colours, includes a collaboration with John Lee Hooker! She was a personal friend of his while living in San Francisco (that’s right, John Lee Hooker!). Another song of hers “For a Day” is a current TVNZ brand song.

Also performing will be Regan Perry (brother of Darcy), who is about to release his second album, Maui, through Mash it Up Records in Chicago. The list of international guests playing on it is jaw-dropping. It features: Bob Marley’s lead guitarist in the original Wailers, Junior Marvin; keyboardist, lead singer and 2013 Grammy nominee Desi Hynes; Ziggy Marley’s “singing drummer” Squidly Cole; and Stick Figure, dubbed a “genius producer” by Rolling Stone Magazine. The Katikati Folk Club are having an Island Night on Friday (26 July) with groups from Vanuatu and Tonga playing music from the islands (see their website for more). And Argentinian guitarist/ singer/songwriter Santiago Rebagliati, whom I wrote about last month, will be playing at Comida on The Strand, Friday at 8pm, and Armazem at the Mount on Sunday around 5pm. Fantastic Not bad at all Dreadful

THE ABCS OF DEATH Dir: Too many people to mention - Starring: Too many people to mention Anthology films are usually a bit hit and miss, and that’s very much the case here. But, since there’s a lot of good stuff amongst the dross, and since it was the brainchild of a Kiwi producer, I’m happy to recommend it as a “Pick of the Week”.

Ant Timpson, the man who created new Zealand’s Incredibly Strange Film Festivals (now part of the International Film Festival happening in Auckland) invited 26 directors from all around the world to participate. They were each assigned a letter of the alphabet. Then they picked a word starting with that letter and made a death-themed short film for $5000.

Each is about five minutes long, some scary,

some gory, some funny, some bizarre, some just plain silly. Some are animated, some subtitled, running from A For Apocalypse to Z For Zetsumetsu (Extinction).. Frankly its a bit of a slog watching all 26 separate films in a row, but there’s no reason not to stop for a coffee along the way.

Some films really stand out: T For Toilet is surprisingly brilliant claymation; rising UK star Ben Wheatley’s POV vampire flick U For Unearthed is very good; Q For Quack made me laugh out loud. There are also some real turkeys (M For Miscarriage stands out as a complete waste of whatever effort went into it).

The cover compares Hong King police thriller Cold War to Infernal Affairs, so I was definitely in. (IA is the HK film that Martin Scorsese’s The Departed was based on – it’s on DVD and it’s fantastic.) While never rising to those heights, this does a cracking job with internal politics – two deputies vying for the commissioner’s job – wracking the force just as five officers are kidnapped and held hostage. There’s also a mole in the department and much double-crossing going on by persons unknown. Throw in some exciting action and you have a fun (if occasionally confusing) ride.

Parker has reached the cinema in several different guises, from Lee Marvin in Point Blank to Mel Gibson in Payback. No he’s back again and, surprisingly, takes the form of Jason Statham.

And, even more surprisingly, this is the Stath’s best film for an age, giving him free range to growl and beat people up but also inserting a slick plot and an interesting array of secondary characters (Jennifer Lopez does her best work since Out of Sight).

The first twenty minutes actually rehashes the plot of Point Blank before moving on to new business.

Good stuff.

I’m a sucker for films set in the world of American politics so Knife Fight , with Rob Lowe as a political crisis manager juggling various scandal-ridden candidates, immediately grabbed my attention.

And I wish I could recommend it; there’s some smart talk and good performances.

But the film totally fails to gel on almost every level. The tone is uncertain, veering between glibly humorous and sanctimonious, the pacing is uneven, editing and camera-work unimaginative, and the story never generates any momentum. The best things are the semi-satirical political ads but, given the extremes of the real thing, that’s hardly an achievement.

If you’re looking for big dumb action then A Good Day To Die Hard certainly delivers. Whether it’s mass destruction of cars from driving heavy armoured vehicles through the streets of Moscow or simply the bonanza of blowing up and shooting stuff, you won’t be disappointed.

But the Die Hard films have always been about more than the action and this, like Die Hard 4.0, fails to deliver an interesting villain, instead relying on the dynamic with a newly-introduced – and similarly ass-kicking – son, a slightly blank Jai Courteney. Bruce Willis is his reliably wry and indestructible self, walking away unscathed from two serious car wrecks within the first half hour.

Stage rendition of loved film opens next week The true story of a group of English women who took the unprecedented step of posing nude for a fundraising calendar is being brought to life at Tauranga’s 16th Avenue Theatre.

‘Calendar Girls’ opens on Wednesday, July 31, and runs until August 17. The popular stage show was written after the movie became a worldwide success in 2003.

The story depicts events surrounding a group of English women who produced a nude calendar to raise money for charity in 1999. Their risqué approach captured worldwide attention and unexpectedly plunged the women into the spotlight.

Tauranga 16th Avenue Theatre’s production is directed by Julie Lankshear, who says the women were

trail-blazers as no-one had done such a thing before.

“Quite a few groups have done it now – firemen, for example, often put out a racy calendar. But these women were pioneers. They set out with the aim of buying a new settee for the visitor’s lounge at their local hospital and they raised so much money they wound up building a whole wing for the cancer patients.”

Te Maunga/SH2 traffic changes Traffic will be moved at Te Maunga to allow construction to start on the Tauranga Eastern Link’s southbound lanes and to complete the new residential access road — Te Maunga Lane.

Baycourt is expecting a full house when former Prime Minister Helen Clark speaks about her role at the UN next month.

From Sunday 28 July the Te Maunga roundabout State Highway 2 southbound slip lane will be closed until late 2013.

In a turn-out the Labour Party would have loved in conservative Tauranga, she will talk about her work as the head of the UN Development Programme to drive sustainable development around the world.

UN Tauranga branch president Gray Southon is delighted with the strong interest for what is their highest profile UN speaker ever to visit the area, saying tickets in the 560-seat auditorium are fast selling out.

He is encouraged by the strong interest that people are showing in Helen’s work on sustainable development, saying it is a critically important subject that needs more attention.

“We’ve got to see that we can’t live as we are and recognise the need to live sustainably,” says Gray.

Helen will speak at Baycourt on August 7 from 6pm on the topic ‘Challenges and achievements in making a better world’. Tickets are available from TicketDirect at Baycourt.

Some change we welcome – decaying fruit rotting to compost, a helpless baby becoming a friend as an adult; we call it development and progress.

Some change we shun – failing memory and body parts, friends and family moving away or reaching the end of life’s journey; we call it deterioration and loss. Yet we have all grown up expecting the world to change.

Creation has an in-built rhythm of change: the spin of the planet produces a kaleidoscope of shifting light and shadows, the constellations revolve round the night sky; the constant movement of water in river and ocean

holds our gaze. Institutions, including the church, can be hard to change. The challenge is to balance, retaining what is vital to our identity and important to being who we are, with the adaptation needed to stay relevant to the communities where we live and able to proclaim the message of the gospel: God’s love for all.

As Christians we ask ourselves: what traditions and old understandings are no longer helpful? What new expressions of faith can convey the good news that God cares for creation, for you and for me? How is God’s Spirit at work, like the wind of change, inviting us to help make the world a safer and more hospitable place for everyone? By Viv Whimster, ministry assistant, Wesley Methodist Church

The last days, according to scripture In Matthew 24:3, the disciples ask Jesus: “What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” – referring to Jesus coming for the Church at the Rapture and to His second coming as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, when He will receive the Kingdom from His Father in the Ancient of Days and when He begins His millennial reign.

Jesus then points to a number of significant signs that relate to those last days including wars and rumours of wars, famines, earthquakes, great lawlessness, as well

as the apostasy of the Church which includes false prophets, teachers and apostles – and false Christs! He also speaks about the “abomination of desolation” referring to the anti-Christ standing in the Holy of Holies in the rebuilt temple in Jerusalem and pronouncing Himself as the Christ, the Messiah.

In verse 8, Jesus says that when people see the signs He mentions, specifically rumours of wars, famines and earthquakes, then these signs are the beginning of birth-pangs.

to point out in this (short) article. Firstly, when a woman is in labour, the birth-pangs increase in intensity and in frequency. Secondly, although there can be fluctuations in intensity and frequency, once the birth-pangs start, the birth process is irreversible.

We live in a time where wars and rumours of wars, famines, earthquakes, lawlessness and falsehood have greatly increased in intensity and in frequency, like never before. The labour pangs of the last days have begun and the outcome is settled.

Also, Israel is God's prophetic end-time clock.

All biblical prophecies that relate to the last days require Israel to be back in the land that God gave them in an everlasting covenant; and they require Israel to be established again as a nation.

It is also significant that preparations are underway, and discussions are in place, for the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem.

Putting all the signs together, we are living in the last days and the Bridegroom is coming soon for His Bride, who must be ready and looking for His return.

There are a few special requirements for this lovely boy. He has had a vet check and a dental and he is in excellent health except that he has an eye condition which is probably from untreated ulcers in the past and will probably mean he will lose what’s left of his eyesight. He will need to go to a home with owners who can commit to regular checks with the vet to ensure his health remains strong.

This month’s recipient for Mobility Equipment & Services’ Special Achievers Award is Cara Rose.

Cara recently competed in the Manawatu Regional Games on June 15-16 and came away with an impressive four gold medals after winning the 100m individual medley, 50m breastroke, 200m freestyle and 25m medley relay team events.

Discovering Tauranga’s little-known walkways has helped 12 Lions clubs raise $25,000 to help cancer sufferers.

Fundraising totals have just been compiled from the Discover Tauranga Walkways event on May 19, and the Cancer Society Lions Cancer Lodge is set to receive a cash boost of $25,000.

Lions’ event organiser Jim Peterson says the success of the event is due to

cooperation of city businesses that helped fund its running.

“This enabled us to make the event happen and at the same time raise money through donations given by participants and the public.”
