Blow me down. What a weird week it’s been. Must be all that global warming, causing extremes, they tell us.

From drought to flooding, the wind blowing then not blowing, radicals blowing people up, old entertainers blowing whoknows-what and doing weird stuff with animals, whacko politicians blowing hard, blowing things out of proportion and shopaholic councils blowing our rates. Sure is a lot of blowing going on.

After eight weeks in the refugee resettlement programme, they will be resettled in Hamilton and Palmerston North.

After hearing this, unreliable sources report some have said they’d rather be returned to their homeland to take their chances back there. Rumour has it that some are claiming they misinterpreted the plan – they thought they would get to live in a Shiite place, not a shite place, like Hamilton.

Reports that veteran Aussie entertainer Rolf Harris is involved in sex abuse allegations brings a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport’.

Who is making these allegations? The marsupial? If charges are laid, will it be heard in a kangaroo court?

And what about the other characters in the songs… is it a matter of a cockatoo in the wrong place?

Has there been some inappropriate application of the wobble instrument?

Still in shock, the RR team has been frantically adjusting Rolf ’s songs, to bring them into line with 2013 accusations.

“Keep me cockatoo cool, Curl” is amended to “Slip a cockatoo in, Slim”.

And the verse dealing with the liberation of a certain tree-dwelling bear should now read: “Take me Koala from the back, Jack.”

And as far as Rolf ’s paintings are concerned, it raises the issue of what might have happened to ‘Tessa Through the Bluegums’.

(Let’s hope it wasn’t mounted) This allegation has shattered yet another childhood illusion. We grew up with Rolf ’s songs and painting those amazing big pictures.

Now this news has rattled the very foundations of our upbringing. It can’t possibly be true.

It’s like finding out the Black and White Minstrels weren’t really African-American.

Or the revelation that the moon landings were faked. Or finding out that Lassie was really a cat in a wig.

I don’t agree with all this government does,

but the nutcase plan to nationalise the power industry would sabotage our economy.

National’s Greg Hamilton summed it up pretty well this week: “New Zealanders will see this policy for what it is: a cynical, selfish attempt by left-wing parties to play politics with New Zealand’s assets for their own gain.”

The 24/7 local news site, SunLive proved its worth to Bay of Plenty residents in the weekend, as the only media covering the flooding and keeping residents updated on the incident.

SunLive’s ratings have been steadily climbing, to the point that it is now the region’s leading news provider.

The daily, hourly, to-the-minute news updates have been a hit with local readers, who have also been keen to supply news tips, photos and video for virtually instant publication.

Last week SunLive recorded total traffic of 424,000 page impressions – ranking it in the top four news sites in New Zealand and by far the most popular local media and most visited local site.

According to the latest Nielsen Media – Market Intelligence Report, SunLive is the fourth most viewed online news outlet in the country last week - coming in only behind stuff.co.nz, nzherald.co.nz and odt.co.nz in the News & Magazines category.

While Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Papamoa flooded, SunLive was the only media providing coverage and keeping locals advised of road closures and vital updates.

Residents also took the opportunity to share their flood photos and stories, with many pictures emailed in and some videos posted on SunLive, direct from citizens in the flood zones.

We’ve some great acknowledgements of SunLive’s success this week from civic leaders and business groups, inside this edition of the Sun.

Parting Shot

Finally, the biggest news of the week is that Justin Bieber’s latest relationship has hit the rocks, he has parted with his monkey.

The Capuchin monkey was confiscated by German Customs. Bieber’s reps contacted the Munich clinic, requesting them to find a “safe and sheltered place or a zoo” for him.

Mall crossings Haggling over numbers

Haggling over the number of pedestrian crossings for The Mall in Pilot Bay began this week with councillors amending the numbers from five to three, with the option of a fourth.

Transport operations manager Martin Parkes’ original recommendation was for five crossings, with one near every intersecting street: Leinster Ave, Commons Ave, Grace Ave, Pacific Ave and Prince Ave. They are being introduced because of road safety issues during summer. When compared with Marine Parade, which has similar traffic levels and the same speed limit, The Mall has more traffic accidents. In the past three years three children have been hurt in traffic accidents in Pilot Bay, two of them seriously.

Two of the children were eight years old, one child was age three. Martin wasn’t able to answer questions on whether they were stepping out from

parked cars to cross the road.

On Marine Parade there are 11 pedestrian crossings between Adams Ave and Banks Ave, and there have been no accidents in the past three years.

At about $18,000 per crossing, five will cost about $90,000 and three will cost about $54,000, says councillor Bill Grainger.

The crossings will be half paid for by the NZTA, says Martin.

Councillor Larry Baldock says a crossing at Prince Ave, one between Pacific and Grace avenues and another on the Leinster side of Commons Ave will be enough for now. Later they can look at what to do in the corner by the boat ramp where people will come off the boardwalk.

Bill Faulkner warned that the trailer park by the boat ramp will come under threat as it will provide an alternative to the 15 or so car parks that will be lost to the crossings.

Councillor David Stewart suggested the crossing in The Mall be on concrete pads, like the Marine Parade ones, to further slow the traffic.

Team dedicated to protecting children Wendy Coxhead of the Tauranga Child Protection Team says the Western Bay of Plenty is one of the busiest areas for child abuse complaints.

The team, made of Child Youth and Family staff and Tauranga Police, can deal with 10 to 20 cases a week – sometimes more, says Wendy.

“This is not a good thing, but this could also be

because people are reporting suspicions more than they did in the past.”

The team have on site medical room and interview rooms which are designed to make the interviewing process as easy as possible for a victim.

Detective Sergeant Pete Blackwell says the team is leading the country for this kind of co-located unit.

Pete heads a team of five detectives who work alongside Child Youth and Family’s risk assessment team in determining the best course of action in dealing with a complaint.

“We are there when it comes to the criminal aspect of a case, both for the child and the alleged offender.”

Team who assesses the degree of severity of a complaint.

She says her team will look at the complaint and see whether or not a child is in immediate risk.

“Complaints can be anything from neglect, serious family violence, serious physical violence and sexual abuse. Our role is to see if someone is in direct danger or not.

“If a child is in immediate danger or at risk then we will look at placing the child in care of other family who is deemed to be safe until the situation is sorted.”

He says random roadside drug testing is the way to go if reliable and accurate testing methods can be identified.

Waipuna footballer Zachary Bell will head to Japan as part of the Coerver Coaching Asia Pacific tours in September.

Dazzling footwork and silky smooth skills will be on display as Waipuna Football Club get behind and support one of their rising superstars this weekend.

This Sunday a series of display matches in celebration of Coerver, the world renowned football coaching technique, will be played alongside a fundraising event for Japan-bound Zachary Bell.

The 12-year-old along with six other Bay of Plenty footballers have the footballing world at their feet after being selected for Coerver Coaching Asia Pacific tours later this year.

With world class footballers Argentinian and Barcelona striker Lionel Messi and All White Leo Bertos as his idols, Zachary firmly believes this is a stepping stone to dazzling the footballing world.

Western Bay hit by flooding

Heavy rain caused serious flash flooding across the region at the weekend forcing residents to evacuate and damaging many homes and offices.

Torrential rain hit Friday night causing flooding in Mount Maunganui, Papamoa and parts of Tauranga in the early hours of Saturday. It returned Saturday night causing slips and evacuations in Waihi Beach and the Western Bay of Plenty.

Firefighters were inundated with calls, helping to pump houses and evacuate residents including dozens of people from the Waihi Beach Top 10 Holiday Park using ropes as flood waters reached up to 70cm deep.

They also helped rescue an elderly lady who became trapped in her car as it was submerged on Waihi Beach Road.

Sections of SH2, SH29, the Athenree Gorge and other roads were closed due to surface flooding and slips.

The WBOP Civil Defence Emergency Operation Centre at Barkes Corner was activated as a precaution as more than 200mm fell from Friday night to Monday morning. Full story – plus photos and video on SunLive.co.nz

P-lab explodes in Mount house

Residents on Ocean Beach Road were evacuated this week when a P-lab exploded in the basement of a property leaving a man with burns to 30 per cent of his body.

About a dozen houses were evacuated and a section of Ocean Beach Road between Girven Road and Concord Ave was closed after the explosion about 3.30am on Tuesday.

A 57-year-old Mount Maunganui man was found in the basement of the house with burns to his chest and face.

He was taken to Tauranga Hospital and later airlifted to Waikato Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

Booze free zones proposed

Tauranga City Council is looking to establish new liquor ban areas in Greerton, Papamoa and Brookfield ahead of the law change to liquor ban bylaws in December this year.

Councillors have agreed to put liquor bans for Greerton Village shopping centre, parts of Papamoa, including a blanket ban along Papamoa beach from 10pm to 7am, and Brookfield Shopping Centre out for public consultation.

Liquor bans are also proposed for city reserves including Taylor Reserve, Motiti Reserve, Gordon Spratt Reserve, Topaz Drive Reserve, Papamoa Domain and Harrisons Cut. Sections of Gravatt Road and Domain Road next to Fashion Island are also touted.

New library for Greerton

Greerton’s long awaited new library is heading toward reality after Tauranga City Council agreed to the next step in the current process this week – proceeding to refine the costs of the preferred $3 million rebuild option.

The preferred option is a 900m2 rebuild of the Greerton Library with the main entrance into the village square. The preferred option A, differs from earlier option B, by leaving the two council-owned neighbouring sections available for sale to defray costs.

EnviroLeader visits Christchurch Tauranga Girls’ College student Year 13 Loren McCarthy has been selected to represent the Bay of Plenty region in the Sir Peter Blake Youth EnviroLeaders’ Forum next week.

From April 28 to May 2, the 17-year-old will attend the annual event in Christchurch where she will represent the Bay addressing topical environmental issues facing New Zealand.

This year the theme is ‘urban expedition’ with a focus on fresh water, resource management and the Christchurch city rebuild.

Along with her love for the environment, it was a fellow student who encouraged Loren to apply for a position in the forum.

“In my first year of economics we did a study on Christchurch and I just got really interested in the way that the environment and the economics link together.”

The event, in its 10th year, is run in partnership with the Ministry for the Environment.

During the five-day position, Loren, along with 50 other students from around the world, will raft the Rakia River, visit Lake Ellsmere and talk with iwi about the work taking place at the site.

The students also visit the Christchurch rebuild zone; and learn about a reclamation project at Port Littleton.

Having always been a fan of the environment Loren says she wants to pursue a career in environmental science but is unsure of what role she will take exactly.

“I’m not entirely sure at this point but I’m leaning towards law and science like environmental law or something like that.”

Otumoetai’s robots rule the world Otumoetai College’s robotics team has proven itself to be a world leader again after winning the Robotics World Championships ahead of 420 teams from around the globe.

It has been a rapid ascent to the top for the team that was third equal at its first world competition last year, and winning the national secondary school competition earlier this year.

Along with taking the world champion title, a joint team comprising of Otumoetai’s Cameron Apeldoorn and Kenley Cowles with two members from Lynfield College, the school amassed four other trophies and two special awards at the championships in the US which finished on Sunday.

Otumoetai College’s robotics team with their big trophy haul they have just won at the world championships in the Anaheim: Seumas Beedie, Lucas de Rijk, Cameron Apeldoorn and Kenley Cowles.

Toni de Rijk said it was a “very impressive horde” of trophies for a four-member team with three trophies.

Toni said the success was a tribute to the hundreds of hours of their own time the boys had put into designing, building,

programming and testing their purpose-built robots. They use their robots to compete against another team on a field, by picking up and moving cylinders and balls into goals to score points.

The Port of Tauranga Half triathlon has received confirmation it will again carry National Long Distance Championship status and World Championship qualification for the 25th anniversary event in January.

Pre-pearing yourself for pear season with cake There are more than 3000 varieties of pears and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Pears can be poached, eaten raw or used in salads and they’re often used in baking. Pears are a good source

of fibre and vitamin C and contain less allergens than other fruits so they’re used in exclusion diets for allergy sufferers.

Matching foods together as complimentary co-stars in flavour is often the key to a memorable meal. When we cook and taste ingredients, we know they work as a winning combination, like bacon and eggs, chicken and corn – or pear and blue cheese. The meal’s success becomes less of a risk and more of a familiar pleasure. l like sitting down at the end of the day and enjoying a shared meal. Besides blue cheese, pears go well with hazelnut, walnut, spiced salami and ginger. Recently, I was re-acquainted with the combination of pear and ginger in an upside down cake to die for.

It has been so many years since I’d tasted such a duo in the same spiced syrupy cake/dessert.

So why not put those fresh pears to good use this season with this week’s recipe that is not too difficult to make, and will lift your spirits on these chilly evenings.

DESSERT

Spiced pear and ginger upside-down cake

FARMERS MARKET EVERY SUNDAY 9.00am to 1.00pm

15 serves Ingredients 4-5 fresh pears, peeled, cored and sliced 2cm thick 3 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp mixed spice 1 tsp baking soda 1 pinch of salt 2.5 cups plain flour 2.5 cups of brown sugar 275g butter melted (and cooled) 1 cup golden syrup 3 eggs beaten 250ml natural yoghurt Method

Lightly grease and completely line (with baking paper) a 23cm baking tin or roasting tray.

Sprinkle ½ cup of brown sugar over the base and spoon over enough of the melted butter to form a paste in the bottom of the tin.

Lay the sliced pear into the paste and keep it one layer thick.

Lightly sprinkle with ginger powder and chill while preparing cake mix.

Sift flour, remaining spices, baking soda and salt into a bowl. Form a well and add the remaining sugar, melted butter, eggs, golden syrup and yoghurt.

Stir the wet ingredients together first and then form a cake batter by mixing wet and dry ingredients together with a spoon.

Spread out on prepared tray and bake in a preheated fan forced oven at 160170 degree Celsius for 40 to 45 minutes. Test the cake with a skewer – if it comes out clean it is cooked. Cover and rest for 12-15 minutes before turning over and removing baking paper while still warm.

The cake is great as it is, as a slice or eaten warm with fresh cream or custard.

The yoghurt seems to help it stay moist for days but it will not last that long – rest assured.

Bayfair’s Pete Scott thought it was almost too good to be true watching the V8 Supercar championships in Pukekohe.

“I’m always nervous when he’s racing and during that last lap I kept thinking something was going to happen,” recalls Pete, who watched grandson Scott McLaughlin 19, take the chequered flag on TV at home with her son and daughter-in-law.

Scott created history becoming the youngest driver to win a V8 Supercars race, but knowing how fortunes can change in an instant Pete will be watching the Perth round closely next weekend.

“It was so exciting, it’s a dream come true for Scott. Since word go he’s always wanted to win the V8 supercars, but none of us expected it so soon,” says Pete.

After the race they had a celebratory drink, but following mixed

results in the first two rounds of the BNT V8 Super Tourers series in New Zealand, even this proud grandma is not getting ahead of herself.

“It’s just one race and as we all know things can change dramatically, but hopefully it’s a good sign.”

Knowing that team management limits family access to drivers so they stay focused, Pete decided to watch the event from the comfort of her armchair.

But she is looking forward to seeing him live in Pukekohe at the round three of the BNT V8 Super Tourers on May 25-26.

“He did show great promise when he was young. I remember he won the North Island karting championships when he was eight or nine for the cadet class.”

Pete and a group of seven Bay of Plenty women each aged over 75, regularly get together to support Scott when is racing.

Club is still going strong and he appreciates all the support the fan club gives him.”

Scott started karting aged about seven in Hamilton, regularly racing in Te Puke – the former home track for kart-loving parents Diane and Wayne McLaughlin when they earlier lived at the Mount.

After solid progress in karting in his early years, Scott went on to go compete in Australia after his family shifted to the Gold Coast 10 years ago to run a trucking business.

In 2010 at age 16, he joined Stone Brothers Racing Team, which he raced for during two years.

He got his big break in December when he filled in for an ill driver in Garry Rogers Motorsport team at the Telstra 500 – where his respectable finish led to a full-time position in the Melbourne-based team.

New council CEO hitting the ground running Elected members met individually with new CEO Garry Poole during his first week at council.

It was an ice breaker meeting where we could find out a little about each other and the elected member can give a steer of their aims, objectives, hopes and aspirations. Imagine being Garry – trying to make heads or tails about 11 very different people’s views on how your city should be run and coming to a consensus conclusion. As Garry is still with us it can’t have been too bad.

The future is looking good with Garry at the helm. He hit the ground running – has already made some hefty decisions within the organisation and will be announcing his management team this week – probably before you read this as The Weekend Sun deadline has been moved ahead because of Anzac Day. The city hall organisation has been bereft of hard decisions for some time now and Garry’s arrival has been a breath of fresh air in my opinion.

Hard decisions

Some more hard decisions will have to be taken by elected members in the wake of this last weekend’s floods – pun intended. In my book it is untenable to have on-going flooding of property, especially people’s homes. I attended a flooding, for the third time in 24 hours at Matua on Sunday night. It is devastating seeing people mopping and pushing floodwaters out their doors. In my view its poor council infrastructure, in this case it seems the storm water drain runs uphill.

When there is torrential rain in a short time it backs up and runs back to the lowest point and explodes like a geyser flooding nearby homes in about three minutes. It’s not the current staff ’s fault. They are doing a good job with the resources they have but there’s not enough resource in light of the changing weather patterns which produce flash flooding. After the 2005

floods, council allocated some $80 million during 10 years to address the issue. Projects that have been done to date, work well. Otumoetai Golf Course, which is also a flood plain, was drained quickly this weekend thanks to the remedial action done.

Much more flood remedial work needs to be done in a much shorter time span which means more money.

Clearly ratepayers are up against it financially so the option is to once again have a hard look at spending priorities. It’s a tough call but council simply can’t have ratepayers homes flooded on an on-going basis because of poor historic infrastructure decisions. Just as well we never embarked on projects like the waterfront museum and to those who said that council should “nourish the mind as well as the body”, and other socialistic nonsense, I say go and look at devastated homes and devastated residents and tell them that their rates dollars would be better spent on “mind nourishment”.

Report released

The Government’s report looking at improving the cost-effectiveness of councils’ provision of infrastructure has been released. The title of the reports authorising group is an indication of where this is going. The Local Government Infrastructure Efficiency Expert Advisory Group – comprising of our own ex-CEO Alan Bickers – no less, Fran Wilde and five others.

Call me a conspiracy theorist if you like but this could end up in corporatisation or privatisation of council’s water and waste water undertakings. At a recent conference I button-holed Alan and tried to discuss it with him. Alan and I have had robust discussions about these sorts of things during the years and to some degree my take is that Alan is gamekeeper turned poacher. Certainly, he donned his hard hat and flak jacket and headed to his bomb shelter during the brief discussion. It’s easy to see why a Govern Continued ...

Tagged: watch this space Tauranga artist Owen Dippie’s work could be the new welcoming sign into the Papamoa community if a proposal for him to paint the abandoned petrol station, where two French tourists were attacked last year, goes ahead.

In anticipation the words ‘Watch This Space’ are now painted on the old Shell service station.

Last December, Papamoa Progressive Association chairman Steve Morris wrote to Z Energy on Facebook questioning the future of the station, saying it’s the wrong welcome sign into the town.

Owen has now drawn two concepts which the owners of the building are looking at, he says.

Although it’s still in proposal stages, Owen is thrilled to be asked.

“I would love to paint it and hopefully it all goes to plan.”

Pay council’s crumbs then on sell to the private sector at diamond prices. These capital investments then have to produce a return on investment so up goes the price of water. Yes, you’ve seen it all before with electricity. The GST take goes up too.

Directors fees – Mark Ford, chairman of Metrowater in Auckland is on about $600,000. And like electricity, water and wastewater is an essential commodity – so control of it is the ultimate investment monopoly – and we at the bottom of the heap have no choice or options other than to pay. And remember Government clips the ticket at every step via income and company tax. Corporatisation or privatisation of water is one of the last untapped gold mines and of course it will be touted as being in your best interests. Like last time they had a go, I will be encouraging Local Govern-

ment, elected members, parliamentarians and all New Zealand to resist and oppose what would be worse than a land grab for all of us.

Annual plan submissions closed last Friday and there are about 100 submissions.

At the time of writing, there didn’t seem to be any one major issue concerning submitters. It’s a long way from the heady days of 1300 submissions and 2500 pages to read from just a few years ago. Council is now receiving regular updates on clearing the Rena wreck from the top of the Astrolabe Reef. An $11.3 million Limitation Fund has been constituted to reimburse businesses affected by the disaster. The insurers and owners “preferred option” is to leave the rest of the wreck there. For future generations to cope with?

National win for Otumoetai left-handed golfer ...The 72-year-old says he took up golf for the “exercise and the camaraderie”.

Otumoetai resident Stan Mathews didn’t expect to be named a national winner when he entered a golf competition this month. But he was –and he did it left handed.

From April 8–11, Stan represented the Bay of Plenty at the National Association for Left Handed Golfers competition in Auckland. This is Stan’s fourth year competing in the national event, but it is the first year he has won. “(I feel) quite different. I didn’t expect it,” he says.

Stan started playing golf after he retired eight years ago. He says he has always played left handed.

“I’m only left handed with a cricket bat and a golf club. Everything else I do right handed. There’s a lot of people like that.”

The 72-year-old says he took up golf for the “exercise and the camaraderie”.

Stan plays golf three times a week.

Monday, he says is a practice day and on Wednesday he plays at the Otumoetai Golf Club.

On Friday, Stan travels with the Bay of Plenty Veterans Society to play golf at any one of the golf clubs between Opotiki and Waihi. This Friday he

is travelling to Waihi. Stan is now turning his focus towards the two-day event for left handed golfers at the Rangitikei Golf Club in May. He then wants to try his luck in another competition held at Mount Maunganui in June.

Health issues: fact or fiction?

Do you really know enough about some of the health conditions evident as we grow older? Age Concern is presenting the third series of annual seminars starting on May 14.

This year the topics are all health issues. Hospital specialists will be the main speakers. The first seminar will be on osteoporosis, followed by meetings on diabetes, dementia and ‘Keeping a healthy heart’.

Speaker for the osteoporosis seminar will be Dr Elizabeth Spellacy, physician for older people.

This is a wonderful opportunity to get all the information you need to make informed decisions, find out about diagnosis, treatment and avoiding or living with the condition. If you have been living with one of these health issues it is good to hear up-to-date thinking on treatment. Questions will be welcome and local support groups will have display tables and give advice on their services. Elderly less lonely than youth The chance of feeling lonely decreases with age, with people over 65 years old experiencing loneliness less often than youth in New Zealand - according to research released this week.

Statistics New Zealand’s report Loneliness in New Zealand says one in every three adult New Zealanders feels lonely.

The results show that 18 per cent of young people aged under 30 years had felt lonely at least some of the time in the previous four weeks. This compared with 16 per cent of people in midlife (30–64 years) and 11 per cent of older people.

Social statistics manager Steve Manning says this is great news for the country’s older population.

“Within western modern societies, loneliness is largely seen as a problem for older people and as a result there is a good deal of policy interest in the loneliness of older people.

These findings show that atten-

tion could be given to loneliness in younger people as well.”

The research also suggests that factors strongly associated with loneliness – such as mental health, having enough money, and living alone – differ by age group.

“This shows that different factors make people vulnerable to loneliness at different stages of life, and preventative strategies or interventions that reflect this range of factors could be considered. One particular finding shows that not having enough money strongly influences older people feeling lonely, with older people living in hardship significantly more likely to feel lonely than younger people in the same situation.” This week on www.sunlive.co.nz we asked Tauranga residents what age they consider to be elderly.

A leading 29 per cent answered 85 years and above. 24 per cent answered 75 years and above while six per cent answered 90 years and above. Just six per cent of respondants answered 60 years and above.

Mum wants to stay in her own home Q: Our 88-year-old mother has lived at home with help from the family. Because it is coming increasingly difficult for her to be at home it is now time for her to move to a facility. How do we decide what is the best option?

A: It is great your mum has stayed at home for so long, since this is where most seniors wish to be (90 per cent say they wish to remain in their own home) and what a wonderful family to have supported her in this wish. I am not sure what research you have done and if your mother has been assessed. Most people believe it is an all or nothing affair; stay at

home or go to a retirement/rest home. However, your mother may be entitled to government support to assist her in remaining in her home. A visit to her GP will allow her to be ‘needs assessed’ by Support Net to see if she is entitled to home assistance by a Government provider. If the care provided by the agency you select here is not enough, you are able to top up using a private provider such as Home Instead, all of which could be far less disruptive and easier to implement than a big move.

With regards to which facility, it all depends on your mother’s preferences and ability. Her being assessed will help with knowing the options available to her. It is important to visit your short list, meet with staff, see the rooms or apartments and read the small print so you understand the costs and obligations, thereby making an informed decision in which your mother is fully engaged.

If your mother does move into a retirement home you should encourage her to maintain the relationships that she has formed at home. For example, if your mother has had a carer assist her with some needs, they may be able to accompany her into her new home and supplement her care. Little things like this can make the transition to a new setting much easier.

Knitters on a mission Omokoroa resident Nelda McCann and the ladies at Bob Owen’s Retirement Village are on a mission. Their mission is Operation Cover Up.

Nelda has invited the Knitters and Natters group at the retirement village to assist her in knitting hundreds of blankets, clothes and accessories for orphan children and poor families living in Eastern Europe.

It was when Nelda and her husband travelled to Romania in 2004 to work in orphanages for three months that she decided to knit blankets for orphan children and families from her Omokoroa home. Nelda says after visiting the orphanages she began to realise how lucky people are to live in New Zealand.

“When you’ve been out there you sort of

Nelda, who has been knitting for six years, says about 400 blankets are knitted each year as part of the operation – not including additional hats, scarves, jerseys and slippers.

Each year the knitted goods are shipped to orphanages and families in countries including Romania, Ukraine and Moldova.

All completed knits for this year need to be delivered by mid-July for sizing and counting before they are sent away.

On July 30 a 1.30pm knitters will meet for their annual get-together for afternoon tea at the Otumoetai Baptist Hall where knitting will be bailed up ready for shipping.

Chiefs inspire new talent From yelling encouragement on the sidelines, Amokura Heyblom’s rugby has come a long way. Earlier this month the Bay of Plenty under-18 player took another major step toward her Olympic dream.

Amokura, 17, was among 15 young athletes from the Te Puke area who began the new Sports Training Excellence Programme this month which has been set up by Tanerau Latimer to foster sporting talent in the Western Bay. Despite representing the region for the past two seasons, Amokura was “star-struck” by the Chiefs players she met on the day supporting the program, describing it as an inspiring experience.

“It wasn’t quite what I expected,” says Amokura.

She is one of two girls in the initial three-month programme, which organisers already plan to roll out for players across the wider Western Bay. “It was actually quite good (training with them).

It made me not want to quit and show them I could keep up with them.”

Programme organiser Mark Basham believes the initial training session at Rangiuru Rugby Club was a “life-changing experience” for everyone.

“It was totally motivating and inspiring for these athletes to hear this high calibre advice, to be shown the techniques and eating habits,” says Mark.

Players involved included Tanerau, Aaron Cruden,

Craig Clarke and Tim NanaiWilliams, along with the Chiefs trainer and nutritionist.

Each participant was given a training routine and nutrition programme to follow every day before returning to the next monthly session with the Chiefs players. By Hamish Carter

Getting active indoors With autumn’s chill drawing in, motivation for outdoor exercise is waning for many – but Sport BOP is encouraging you to keep active with varied activities during May with ‘Indoors Month’.

Sport BOP recreation advisor Nicki Scott is encouraging everyone to try their hand at some of the many activities on offer, saying there is something suitable for all levels of fitness and interest, including many activities suited to those with disabilities.

Indoors Month is being run as part of the ‘Play in the Bay’ sports promotion calendar, with activities ranging from dance and yoga, to taekwondo, table tennis and exercise classes.

Immediately I made a claim on Mary’s trauma insurance – part of the planning we did when they were both building their dream. The insurance payment meant the family could go away and spend some quality time together in the tropics while Mary was well enough. They came back refreshed and with a decision that Peter and Mary would marry in the summer. What a wonderful day that was.

Time flies

Looking back on it now, that year seemed to fly by, but at times when Mary was at her lowest, would seem excruciatingly slow. It was painful to see the change in Peter and Mary as her illness became progressively worse. When medically it became obvious there was nothing more to be done, I visited Mary in hospital. She seemed a shadow of her former self. She was in tears and wanted to share with me her fears, her concerns about her family when she was gone.

It was one of those rare moments again that I hold close of being able to comfort another human being when they are at their lowest. I reassured her that my role as her financial adviser would continue regardless of the outcome, and that I would continue to support and see Peter and her family through this. As the tears were in her eyes, she suddenly exclaimed – our will! During the years I had given them both a stern reminder that they needed to get their estate planning in order. This, I reminded them every year – but it became one of those things that got pushed aside with the busyness of life. I immediately went into action, and got the lawyer, who did the property purchase, up to the hospital to get the will completed.

This he did without hesitation, and it brought peace of mind to both Peter and Mary.

Courage to continue

Mary’s funeral service was wonderful. I was privileged to speak about a courageous, young woman with a wonderful, caring husband and family. It has been two and a half years since Mary’s passing. I

have continued to meet with Peter – yes the first 12 months were hard. One tends to become a creature of habit when a loved one dies. I have been witness to this regardless of age. Sam is growing up – almost four now and quite intelligent for his age. Peter has done well. The whole family are doing well and can remember with fondness a mother and wife who shared a special time in their lives, as I also had the privilege as being her financial adviser.

You see, being a financial adviser is not about being around when the times are good, helping you to build your dream, but more importantly when the chips are down. Highway promotion is on track The Bay of Plenty’s Goodness Highway should be attracting more visitors to the region by August when they aim to have the route from Waihi to Whakatane rebranded.

Te Puke Economic Development Group general manager Mark Boyle says plans to establish it as a tourism product, offering an interesting alternative coastal route between Auckland and Rotorua, were progressing quickly.

Mark says there continues to be enthusiasm for the concept which was first pitched in March, with a recent meeting in Te Puke confirming good support from businesses and tourism operators across the length of the route.

He says he is pleased with the support from the Eastern Bay of Plenty – with businesses backing the plan, along with Whakatane Councillor Pouroto Ngaropo who endorsed the idea. The next meeting will held in Whakatane in about three weeks so other businesses in the area can learn more about it.

There is hope to formalise the Goodness Highway at the meeting and establish a steering committee to drive the project for it to be launched in August.

“We have to position this as a tourism product so it’s more than just saying it’s a highway with a lot of interesting things,” says Mark.

“It’s about positioning it as a product with specific attractions and businesses you can see and do along that highway to get them through the turnstiles and get their tills ringing.”

The route was named the Goodness Highway to recognise the area as a centre that creates top quality, healthy produce.

Differing perceptions of health Health is an individual concept.

Our perceptions of good health differ depending on our situations, previous health, family health history and goals in life.

Good health to me might be something completely different for you. There is no right or wrong in terms of the way you define good health for yourself and your family – as long as you have a concept of it.

I have a heap of motivational quotes that I use in presentations, newsletters and the like. When I have some spare time I scroll through quote books and websites to find just the right quote for an occasion. When it comes to health there are some fantastic quotes which I use on a regular basis. The thing I like about quotes is that they are short and sharp messages that take a second to read, but their impact can last a lifetime. You can read lots of books with a heap of information, but a simple quote might be all it takes to make a difference for you. Quotes that are relevant to me at different times get written on a plain old yellow post-it and attached to my desk or

to the fridge at home. I replace them when I have a new goal or have changed direction. If you are ever lacking in motivation – reading through a few quotes might just spark you up again.

It’s often hard to be motivated about good health when the weather starts to turn colder and like the last few weeks, when the rain sets in. So if you are lacking a bit of motivation to keep up with the lifestyle changes you have made over summer, or you need something to get you going in the first place, here are a few quotes that might be useful on your fridge or desk.

Faster cancer treatment for Bay Delays in receiving cancer treatment could soon become a thing of the past following the introduction of best practice guidelines for treating most common cancers.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says the new draft tumour standards are a major step to increase the speed of care for cancer patients.

The standards describe what sort of treatment a patient should receive when they have a specific cancer. It follows the success of setting lung cancer treatment standards two years ago.

“We know these sorts of standards work, because we’ve already seen great results from the development [of lung cancer treatment standards].”

“Those standards have improved the way care is delivered to lung cancer patients in many district health boards.”

Tony says the lung cancer standards have led to the rise of innovative rapid-access clinics where patients with suspected lung cancer can have all the key diagnostic tests they need done at the same time.

He says faster diagnosis means patients receive treatment sooner.

Momentum is aligned with the International Coaching Federation and course framework is directly based on the ICF’s core competencies.

Sarah says the life coach training courses are extremely versatile and focus on looking at where you are now and where you ultimately want to be.

“We look at how to overcome barriers and limit self-beliefs which are preventing you from getting to your desired outcome. It’s a positive, purposeful and constructive process.”

Momentum has two more courses available: Level 1 Life Coach Training – running one day or evening per week for 12 weeks, providing a good base of life coaching tools and skills.

Level 2 Advanced Training – for level one graduates, focuses on business and workplace coaching, health and wellbeing, relationship/couple coaching, and career coaching.

Scabies myths and misconceptions I have recently started to see an increasing number of scabies cases throughout the Bay of Plenty region.

There is actually evidence to suggest that it peaks in mid-autumn – so be prepared.

People don’t like to talk about scabies and that’s half of the problem. Unlike so many other chronic skin diseases it is a curable disease if treated appropriately.

Scabies is caused by a mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. They feed using their mouths and front legs to dig into the skin. As they feed within the skin layer, they lengthen their burrows horizontally by about 0.5mm a day. Scabies mites like warm places such as skin folds, between the fingers, around the buttocks and breast creases. The intense itch associated with scabies is caused by the immune system reacting to the mites and their saliva, eggs and poo.

Scabies can be spread through long periods of skin-to-skin and sexual contact with an infected person. Very rarely it can be passed on by sharing clothing,

towels and bedding. Scabies mites don’t fly or jump.

It can take up to eight weeks for the symptoms of scabies to appear after initial infection. This often results in close contacts of infected patients not being treated because they are not itchy, yet.

It is advisable to treat all close contacts of an infected person at the same time – symptoms or no symptoms.

Visit your GP if you think you have scabies or see your pharmacist for treatment if you know you have scabies or if you have had close contact with an infected person. So get over your inner ego and tell your family and friends if you, or a family member, suffers with scabies so they can get on with treatment and stop it spreading.

If they are good friends they will still be afterwards and you will be able to talk and laugh about it for some time

Smashing health boost for wheelchair rugby player Bash, crash, smash: forget about the stereotype of having to treat all people with disabilities gently – a group of Tauranga wheelchair rugby players are helping smash that perception with their high action sport.

Otumoetai wheelchair rugby player Rob Wilson is passionate about the game, saying it has played a key role in his rehabilitation since a spinal injury five years ago. Rob, who broke his neck at C5 in a swimming pool accident eight years ago, remembers how inspired he was when he first saw the national wheelchair rugby team Wheel Blacks training at

Auckland’s Spinal Rehabilitation Unit.

“I wanted to be able to do what they were doing, it looked like so much fun,” says Rob, who will be playing alongside some members of the Wheel Blacks next weekend at the national Wheelchair Rugby Bash at ASB Arena.

The top-form team has just returned from the world championships in Germany where they placed fourth.

“I’m not sure how many of them are coming but it will be pretty easy to tell which players they are by how good they are.”

Wheelchair rugby was not being played in Tauranga when Rob returned three years ago, but in the time since he has led the charge to develop the game setting up a regular ‘bash’ between teams

at QEYC on Monday nights.

Rob is aiming to get the sport “as big as we can in the Bay”, saying he wants more players to get involved so a Tauranga team can compete at inter-provincial events.

“We are looking for some more high function players and someone with medium function, so we’ve got the right mix. We’ve got a few lower function players like myself, but need more high function players for roles like passing the ball.” For Rob there are many benefits from playing wheelchair rugby – including helping him stay fit and the social contact.

“It’s great for your wellbeing in general. Sometimes it really hard to come back after a big accident but wheelchair rugby’s been great because it gives you a sense of purpose, something to work towards.”

The national wheelchair bash runs on May 4-5 from 10.30-4pm.

Talent on show at annual exhibition In 1974 a select few budding artists joined forces in the garage of tutor Toni Quinlan.

Each with their own style and techniques, the group became known as the Mount Maunganui Painting Group.

Almost 40 years later – the renamed Mount Art Group is holding its annual exhibition at the Mount Surf Club from April 26-28.

The group’s 29 members encourage one another to develop their skills and foster open-mindedness in their approach to art.

Residents are invited to view the free exhibition, which features 115 painting for sale, a painting table for children, work by Mount Maunganui College students and the chance to watch some of the members at work.

Holiday fun with Kia Magic team Crowds filled ASB Arena on Monday night to watch Waikato/Bay of Plenty Kia Magic attempt to regain their winning status against the Canterbury Tactix.

Among them was Molly McKeown, 9, from Papamoa School who joined the team on the court, holding the Magic flag. Molly is one of 62 children across the country who won the chance to be an ANZ Future Captain and meet their region’s team.

“I was really excited when I was told I’d won,” says Molly. “I go to a lot of the Magic’s home games but I was really proud to hold their flag and run out on court with the team.” Magic won the match 64-45. The team next take on the Pulse in Wellington this weekend, before flying to Adelaide to face off against the Thunderbirds on May 6.

Scouts need items for jamboree fundraiser The First Otumoetai Scouts are seeking items for a garage sale next month which they hope will raise money needed to send selected scouts to this year’s jamboree.

Committee chairperson Heather Clare says they’re welcoming “anything and everything of saleable use”.

“We wanted to hold a garage sale in April but we had to postpone it because we didn’t have enough stuff.”

Items already collected include clothes, toys, books, a barbecue and boxes of items given by families moving house.

Heather says it costs about $1200 per scout to attend the jamboree in Feilding – where the 10-13-year-olds will meet new friends, learn life skills and take part in many scout activities.

“There is just a mass of scout activities – rock climbing, pulling tractors, it’s just a massive, massive set-up.”

Risk taking tends to have negative connotations when associated with young children.

The reality is, that life always involves a degree of risk, and children need to learn how to cope with this.

Engaging in some risky activities provides opportunities to learn new skills, test the limits of their physical abilities and develop confidence. So how do we strike a balance between a society that is becoming increasingly averse to risk, with many everyday games or activities now seen as dangerous, and provide children with sufficient risk in their play to provide the challenge needed for optimal growth and development?

Play is an essential part of a child’s life. Play provides the opportunity for children to learn about their work and gain the skills necessary for adult life. Children’s play is enhanced when they have the opportunity to safely explore their surroundings, experiment, accept challenges and take risks. Through these experiences children begin to perceive and appraise risks as they learn to avoid injury while exploring the environment and learning about their bodies’ capabilities. Play, by its very nature, involves uncertainty, novelty, and flex-

ibility with a focus on the process rather than the result and a certain element of risk comes with this unpredictable and unstructured behaviour.

Children are naturally motivated to take risks from an early age and are drawn to activities such as climbing high, jumping from heights and balancing precariously. Healthy risk-taking introduces excitement and challenge for children to test their skills and try new activities. Through these experiences, children develop mastery and a sense of success and self-confidence, further encouraging them to face new challenges, explore limits of their abilities, persist with difficulty and learn to assess and manage the risks involved.

Challenge and risk can be integrated to everyday play when children are seen as competent and capable learners who can be taught to behave responsibly with the ability to set their own challenges and find their own solutions.

Skilled teachers can work in association with the children, based on their knowledge of each child, to assess the risk potential involved and intervene to prevent harm when necessary.

Pets of the week A concerned resident recently rang ARRC about a colony of stray cats they’d seen at the Oropi roundabout. There were fears someone was baiting them with anti-freeze to kill the cats and control the population that was getting out of hand. ARRC volunteers laid traps to capture the cats – some of them were kittens just three months old. They

were initially very wild and not at all keen on being handled but with some tender loving care they were tame within a couple of days and are now lovely and gentle kitties looking for a good home.

Tauranga residents are counting down the days until opening night of Baypark’s Drive-In Move Festival – arriving in town on April 30 opening with an allAmerican themed showing of Grease.

Back by popular demand after a successful bout in 2011, festival organisers aim to entertain audiences with a full-fledged classic drive-in movie experience – complete with a themed American retro diner, roller derby waitresses and a handpicked selection of movies sure to provide a great night out.

It begins April 30 with Grease at 7.30pm. Organiser Karen Gemmell says they

expect a full house (230 cars) to attend the themed open night, when the audience are asked to dress in costume for the occasion. Actors from Tauranga Musical Theatre, which is performing its own rendition of Grease later in the year, will dress up and help out.

Theatre president Toni Henderson says they are thrilled to be involved in the festival and help recreate the drive-in feel for visitors.

“We’ve got people who are really keen to get all dressed up in costume and we’ll be handing people vouchers for an early bird special to our September show.” The festival runs from April 30 to May 5 to coincide with the school holidays. Other movies playing include The Avengers, Cars, Anchorman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Evil Dead 2, Back to the Future, Fast and Furious 5 and Dirty Dancing – which won the People’s Choice vote, beating out Top Gun by six votes. Karen says ticket sales have been promising so far – with a number of sell-out shows expected. “We are really looking forward to another great movie festival and still hope to make it an annual event.”

English teacher publishes first book Otumoetai College English teacher Aimee McNaughton has been awarded the prestigious 2013 Joy Cowley Award for her picture book – ‘I Can’t Imagine How That Happened’.

Aimee, who has been teaching at Otumoetai College for three years, began writing her first draft a few years ago.

After some editorial direction from the prominent children’s book author herself, Joy Cowley, the final draft was sent to Scholastic.

Joy is known for titles including ‘The Greedy Cat’ series and ‘NickettyNacketty, Noo-Noo-Noo’.

The book tells the story of a little girl who is on a camping trip with her grandfather.

“It’s based on my own grandpa and

the sort of tricks he used to play on me,” Aimee says.

Aimee, like many other children, grew up around picture books. She says there is a sense of freedom when writing children’s books.

“I have always liked reading children’s books. Children’s books have much more of an opportunity to be free with your writing. You can kind of do anything which is really cool.”

The English teacher has been awarded $1500 for the publication of her book which is set to be published next year.

Aimee has written many short stories before but none which have been published. Her next challenge is writBy Zoe Hunter ing a novel.

Sequence dance club turns 50 Tauranga Sequence Dance Club has been keeping the love for dance alive for 50 years and in celebration is inviting past and present members to a dance night.

President Barbara Schlierike says some of the current members, now in their eighties, have been with the club since its beginning in 1963.

Sequence dancing involves various forms of ballroom, waltz, foxtrot, cha cha, blues and other dance sequences being performed

in sequences and repeated around the dance floor.

“So not only does it keep you fit physically but also stimulates your memory recalling the moves.

You do need a partner so ladies, get those men moving and bring them along.”

Free tuition is available including constant revision.

Dance classes are 7pm to 10pm on Mondays and Wednesdays and again every first Saturday of the month.

Kaimai School remembers

Previous students, enrolled in 1964, Catherine Sage, Mel Moore, Christine Tomsett, Murray Roberts enjoy cake at the celebrations.

Former students, teachers and principals recalled memories of Kaimai School during celebrations marking the centennial of the establishment last weekend.

Among them was Tauranga resident Elma Roberts, who started school when she was six years old and was

one of 10 students enrolled in 1934. She remembers running the near mile-long distance to school every morning. “(I remember) running to school because I was always late. I always left things to the last minute and I had to run like mad and I got there puffing at the last minute.”

As the earliest pupil to attend the centennial celebration Elma was asked to cut the birthday cake.

International educator seminars in NZ

Residents wanting to teach around the world can learn from experienced teacher trainer and international conference speaker Terry Prosser when he visits Tauranga this year.

Terry will be fronting professional development classes and teaching a TESOL course (teaching of English to speakers of other languages) at Bay Learning Academy from July 22-August 16.

Terry, who has taught the TESOL course to more than 2000 students who now teach worldwide, was invited to New Zealand by Bay Learning director Liz Signal.

“I loved the course,” says Liz. “When I did it many years ago it certainly gave me confidence going into a classroom of Korean children for the first time.

“At least I knew what I should be doing and it started off my career in ESOL.” Terry now gives seminars and talks all over Europe and when Liz invited him to New Zealand he jumped at the chance.

“I have never been to that side of the world and New Zealand has always interested me.

“I have taught many Kiwis and really enjoyed having them at my school in Prague, it will be great to meet more.”

Here in Tauranga, Terry will hold three seminars

at Bay Learning Academy in Bayfair, from July 27-August 10.

These will cover a range of topics, from the use of real and authentic language, multi-media resources, teaching grammar to young learners, music, multilevel classes and enriching vocabulary.

Terry’s Auckland seminars will be on July 20 and August 17 at the Waipuna Hotel and Conference Centre in Mt Wellington.

I am very interested in Tim Short’s letter on Friday 5 April in The Weekend Sun regarding fallen native trees. He says, what a waste. I must agree with him on this one. The Conservation Department policy is to let these valuable assets just go to compost, very value compost I say at approx. $3,000 cubic metre.

There should be no great drama in harvesting these trees, what with portable mills and helicopters. Just call tenders and let the market values handle the rest.

As for damage to the undergrowth is concerned, it is remarkable how soon the new trees start growing as soon as the light get down the forest floor.

(Most of Tauranga district police-attended accidents occur, ironically, between the Courthouse and Hospital on Cameron Rd.) Shopper access to town is difficult so shops close in Devonport Road. Public transport must improve. I’d like to suggest some bus service changes: Constantly publicise discounted monthly cards for commuters, weekly for students in term time.

Separate times for buses on similar routes. Bus 2 (Greerton/Mount) and Bus 1 (Bayfair/Mount) both travel Cameron Road. When Bus 1 stops for passengers, Bus 2 catches up. A sign notifying a delay of 15 minutes for Bus 2 at each terminus would separate them for a 15 minute service for most of their route.

The design team came up with a very functional design to contain the erosion caused by the wind and rising sea level but also the proportions are very pleasing to the eye. The project was well constructed so congratulations also to those who did the work.

Daily there are many walking with or without their dogs and cyclists not only have a safe pathway but the best scenery as they go to and from. So congratulations once again to all who have designed and built a facility that is daily giving so much pleasure to so many. Well done Tauranga.

Thank God your correspondent R. Frank 19 April 2013 who was shocked to the marrow to see guns advertised, didn’t read pages 26 & 27 of The Weekend Sun. There he would have found a centrefold of lethal weapons including Holdens, Hondas, Nissans, Fords and all manner of slaying machines. Had he done so he would probably still be hiding under his bed.

Mr Frank should check the statistics of fatalities in cars against those involving firearms.

There are very few dangerous guns except when they are in the wrong hands or used for wrong reasons.

Twisting the Treaty Minority distorting the truth

Peter Dey attacks me in your columns claiming that I ‘seem to be an amateur historian’. Well, yes, I am an unpaid volunteer historian doing my best to get the true story of Waitangi out to New Zealanders instead of the highly falsified official accounts.

If Dey and others read what I write in the new book “Twisting the Treaty” instead of making personal attacks, they will be much better informed.

Let everybody understand that the so-called “official Treaty in English” is a bogus document concocted after the event by Hobson’s foolish secretary, Freeman. As Hobson himself said ‘The treaty, ... signed at Waitangi ... I consider to be de facto the treaty’.

There is nothing about an English version.

Moreover, the real treaty gives no privileges to Maoris which are not shared by all the people of New Zealand. And, oh, yes! I do have a scientific training - better for finding the facts than that of a professional historian working to an agenda as most do.

On 8th December 2010, the National-Maori Party government announced a full blooded review of New Zealand’s constitution and democratic processes, to be carried out by a carefully stacked “Constitution Advisory Panel” with a predominance of Maori radicals and their sympathisers.

Like the sham “review panel” that Finlayson set up to “review the foreshore and seabed 2004, the Constitution Advisory panel appears to be a done deal. After all if National could get away with a prejudiced panel on the foreshore and seabed, why shouldn’t they try the same trick on the public again.

“An important part of the review process will be consultation with Maori, particularly on the place of the Treaty o Waitangi in our constitution.

It sounds like to hell with the rest of us nonMaori this is for us Maoris only. This shows how ignorant he is.

Constitutional change and MPs Some time ago I asked, via the Sun newspaper, MPs Simon Bridges and Tony Ryall whether any proposed constitutional change would need to be validated by referendum. (The latter of course did not respond.) To his credit the former did.

However, his reply that constitutional change could be endorsed by referendum or by crossparty agreement caused much concern among readers, because these two positions are as chalk and cheese: one (referendum) meaning that the Constitution belongs to the people, the other (cross-party agreement) meaning that the Constitution belongs to 120 people. I would urge anyone who is more passionate about democracy than our local MPs to go on to the following websites in order, at the very least, to affirm one of the cornerstones of our democracy, namely that constitutional change can only be validated by binding referendum: www.ConstitutionalReview.org and www.ourconstitution.org.nz R.Rimmer Tauranga.

Who are you to comment Peter Dey any more than the rest of us kiwis! Why shouldn’t we all have a comment [freedom of speech] so can R Paterson and B Moon who have done a lot of research on the subject of the Treaty.

We are all having to do research on the subject as our Democracy is at risk here because of this minority group of radicals threatening that and distorting the truth to get what they want.

Plus you mention the historian Claudia Orange it seems pretty clear she is on the ‘gravy train’ too and the history book she has written seems like it is just to patronise the select group of radicals. Try reading the book ‘Twisting the Treaty’ you might learn some real truth!

The 1975 Treaty of Waitangi Act, was passed so the Waitangi Tribunal could be set up. Once again distortions of the truth, so the ‘Gravy Train’ could really swing into action and effectively swindle Billions from the NZ People?

Money we cannot afford and have to keep on borrowing to pay this, which in turn keeps squeezing our Health and education budgets all to appease the radical few. I haven’t noticed any of the money they have received flowing down to help the battered babies or Maori health problems, which keeps deteriorating more. Oh that’s right we have to pay for that too!

All these squabbles increasing, because a minority group has pushed to have this Constitutional Review happening in order to enshrine the treaty in a ‘written Constitution’ which is not required; there is nothing wrong with our ‘unwritten constitution’.

This has been the final straw for most of us we do not want to live in a country with apartheid which is what will ultimately happen, not to mention unrest and dissent because of the inequality that will follow. We want Equality for all!

Deceit, extortion, fraud and shame Once again Mr. Dey exposes his lack of knowledge. The Maori version of the Treaty was signed by around 540 chiefs.

When 39 chiefs gathered at Waikato heads to sign, the Maori treaty had not arrived in time.

Rather than delay the signing, an English text was hastily drawn up and used. It was poorly worded and does not accurately translate the Maori version.

It has always been acknowledged as an incorrect translation and that there must also have been a missing final English draft that the Maori Treaty as signed was translated from. This was rediscovered in 1989 - the so called Littlewood draft - and the mystery was finally solved..

The problem is that it is the poorly worded English version as signed by less

than 7% of tribes that has been used by grievers to extort resources and money from the country’s citizens for the last half century. Over 93% of tribes signed the Maori treaty - as defined in English by the Littlewood draft. Even those who signed the inaccurate English one thought they were signing the Maori one. Therefore only the Maori Treaty has integrity and its English meaning is defined word for word in the Littlewood draft.

Mr. Dey’s hero Claudia Orange acknowledged this when she first sighted the Littlewood draft.. However as it makes her life’s work fraudulent she has chosen to pretend it does not exist. Shame on Ms Orange and on Peter Dey for their deceit.

Warming up for another winter of Maori bashing?

After a summer without the usual proliferation of race based letters it seems the usual contributors are warming up for yet another winter of Maori bashing.

Mary Brooks continues along in her inimitable way distorting history simply to gain brownie points. She is ably backed up by the paternalistic R Paterson, who seems to have a negative opinion on just about everything, coupled with her desire to sum life by way of percentages.

Equally supported by Bryan Johnson, his unique ability to ask endless irrelevant questions in order to hide his insulting racism, is second to none.

In his latest attempt he calls on the great Robbie Burns to score points in a defacto way.

He fails to see the irony in this famous poem. “It applies equally to you Mr John-

son.” No doubt Robbie would twitch in his grave to find 21st century racists using his poetry to advance such a despicable cause.

The Maori will continue their progress toward their rightful place in New Zealand. It may be slow but it’s unstoppable.

Puts me to mind of another Burns poem, its called “Two Rivers’. Says Tweed to Till, What makes you run so still? Says, Till to Tweed tho you run with speed and I run slow, for all the men that you drown, I drown Twa! Instead of constantly engaging your savage sarcasm why don’t you recognize the soul destroying tragedy of post colonial Maori history, and embrace the noble rebuilding of their culture and dignity, New Zealand will be a better place for it.

Unnatural acts beneath the sheets Dear Brian, My poor husband is feeling awfully depressed. I must admit I’m not feeling too cheerful myself. You see, having been away for a few days, we got home and immediately sat down together to read The Weekend Sun. And there, in the letters to the editor, a missive from Mr Ross Lloyd brought home to us the terrible truth about our – ahem – beneath-the-sheets dealings with each other.

You see, according to Mr Lloyd, all that lovely, mostly horizontal, stuff we’ve been up to for all these years has been bad, perverse, wrong, because I, a (usually) human woman, am not able to reproduce – never have been able to. So our torrid but fruitless tusslings, it seems, are disgusting, an abomination, a perversion.

Funny. We just thought we were expressing our great love for each other in the nicest possible way.

We had no idea we were in fact Upsetting the Horses, Bringing Down the Fabric of Society and Contributing to the End of Civilisation As We Know It. So I’d like to take this opportunity to express our mortification and embarrassment and apologise to everyone out there reeling from the awful consequences of our unmentionable activities.

From this point we promise to do our best to stop using our human bodies wrongly and badly and

Corrupting definition Gay Marriage Bill: So once again we see how a dedicated minority with abundant resources, playing on the desire of the public to show themselves tolerant and supportive of the the claimed under-priveleged, with the compliance of self-serving politicians has managed to get legal acceptance of a bill corrupting the definition of marriage and negating marital concepts and traditions that have been observed by all cultures and all races since time immemorial.

The concept that marriage is a union of a man and a woman for love and racial continuity and not just the legal binding of two loving gay couples. A bill, hyped up by the media, but that is against the wishes of the majority of New Zealanders as it has been acknowledged that it would never have passed had a referendum been held.

The Government has shown once again its reluctance to “ Go to the People.”

The complicity of politicians in this matter is similar to that shown by the success of a minority of Maori radicals in causing a revision of the true meaning of the Treaty of Waitangi and alterations of the legal definitions of national statutes.

Questioning the latter group leads to charges of racism and the former group charges of outmoded thinking and a lack of fairness and compassion towards ones fellow man/woman.

There are gigs this weekend, which I should probably have written about last week to give you a chance to prepare. I’ll run down a few of those first in case you want to immediately dash out of the house and hear some groovy music.

Firstly, bluesman Watermelon Slim is in the area as part of a national tour. You might have caught him being interviewed by Kym Hill on National Radio a couple of weeks back, where he resolutely proved himself to be the “real deal”. As well as being able to bust some serious moves on the slide and the lap dobro, he also revealed a fascinating array of talents and experiences from – naturally – farming watermelons to being former Mensa member, fencing scholarship recipient, Vietnam veteran and 240-point bowler.

His is truly a remarkable story. (You can hear it again on the National Radio website).

Blues Music Awards

Perhaps more relevant to the upcoming gigs is that he’s received 17 Blues Music Awards nominations in the last four years and performed with the likes of Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt and the late John Lee Hooker, whose style he is not a million miles away from.

He’s doing two gigs in the general area – unfortunately the promoter couldn’t find a suitable venue in Tauranga – tonight (Friday, April 26) 7.30pm at Ohope International Golf Club and Saturday, April 27 at Diggers Bar in Hamilton at 3.30pm. Tickets cost $25, available from the venues.

But, if you don’t feel like going to Hamilton on Saturday, there’s a gig closer to home and it’s free!

Dir: Matthieu Kassovitz - Starring: Matthieu Kassovitz, Iabe Lapacas, Malik Zidi Matthieu Kassovitz made a big splash as both actor and director internationally with La Haine. But that gripping thriller was almost twenty years ago now and he has struggled to repeat its success.

With Rebellion he once again sets himself amongst the first rank of French directors.

The film addresses the 1989 uprising in New Caledonia, the French engaging the full might of their not inconsiderate military to brutally suppress a small group of Kanaky separatists. It is an

incident that still resonates in the colony today. It is also topical, as a hand-over, which might or might not happen, is due in 2014, probably signalling the fact that the island’s nickel reserves, which have been mercilessly plundered by France for decades, are finally running out.

Rebellion is based on a book by the man, Philippe Legorjus – played by Kassovitz - who was the principle negotiator with the Kanaky rebels after they had taken four gendarmes hostage.

Butter arrived without fanfare and looking like any typical feel-good ensemble comedy.

It is so much more, the sharpest funniest film I’ve seen all year, its lacerating satire reminiscent of Thank You For Smoking or Election. With a cast filled by players from The Office, Flight of the Conchords and Modern Family, it is led by a powerhouse turn from Jennifer Garner as the manically Sarah Palin-esque wife of Ohio’s butter sculpting champion who, furious at her husband’s enforced retirement after 16 unbeatable years, enters the competition herself. But a very cool 10-year-old black girl is also vying for the title. Underhanded tactics ensue. Every character is three-dimensional and imbued with a real humanity and only a slight misstep into cuteness at the end jars.

But his position was quickly sidelined. France was in the middle of an election. Jacques Chirac wanted a show of strength. So a situation which could have been resolved peacefully became a massacre.

This is a first-hand account from someone who was in the thick of it.

The film is brilliant: cinematography, acting, everything is just spot on, particularly the striking use of music. A study of war and politics, it is eyeopening, tense and exciting and, remarkably, true.

Alex Cross seems like a film designed by committee from various plot drafts. Some films grip you from the start, this one makes you think “Oh dear”.

The big problem – at least aside from the script and direction - is the decision to replace Morgan Freeman, who was Alex Cross in Kiss The Girls and Along Came a Spider, with Tyler Perry, best known for dressing in drag as an ornery black grandma for a series of truly dire “comedies”. I’m sure he’s an awfully nice chap but this just ain’t his gig. Thank heavens then for Matthew Fox, who plunges gleefully over the top as the hyperactive serial killer dogging Cross. Whenever he’s on screen the film is actually worth watching.

American Mary is indeed about a Mary, Mary Mason (Katherine Isabelle) who is a broke trainee surgeon. Her money problems lead her into a weird underground world of unconventional body-modifying surgery which, after a tentative start, she takes to with the conviction of an artist. This is a major step forward for Canada’s writing/directing sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska after grindhouse debut Dead Hooker In A Trunk.

It is a horror film with real panache and originality. It’s also not adverse to some seriously yucky surgery scenes, thought there is also a pulsing vein of black humour.

Yet for all the good work the film has issues with pacing and an ending that fails to build suspense and ultimately feels slightly flat.

Mothers and the role they play will be the focus of a special ceremony in Tauranga next month.

As the country prepares to mark Mothers’ Day on May 12, Elliott’s Funeral Service is planning a service aimed at helping those who have lost a mother.

Manager Neil Gedge says it’s an opportunity for people to gather with others who know how difficult it is to lose a mother.

“Mothers’ Day can be a very emotional time for some people, but we hope this event will provide a chance for people to honour their mum with others who share their sadness.

“We want to support families and individuals in our community by giving them a caring environment where they can remember and pay tribute to someone special.”

South Carolina smooth sounds The first of Tauranga Musica’s 2013 performances arrives next month with a trio of smooth sound from Greenville, South Carolina.

Poinsett Piano Trio, founded in 2008, returns to New Zealand to play at Baycourt on Saturday, May 4. After performing together successfully for several years, Diedre Hutton, David Gross and Christopher Hutton, who all currently live in South Carolina and teach at Furman University, are looking

forward to the Tauranga performance.

Kiwi-born Christopher first toured for Tauranga Musica in 1999 and has enjoyed playing overseas. Berlin-born pianist David has played internationally for years, gaining prizes in several competitions. American-born Diedre Hutton is an avid solo, chamber and orchestral performer in Europe and the US.

God Defend New Zealand Last September, in response to God’s encouragement, I contacted every church leader and every church in our nation that I could find.

The purpose was to invite every church leader and every church to commit to pray through the month of November for a move of God that would lead to revival in our nation.

The encouragement was for them to pray for the sake of the church in our nation and for the sake of our nation, in whatever format worked for them.

Revival is a church word. The unsaved have never had life; it is only the church who have had life and who are in need of the revival fires of God. As the church goes, so goes the nation and our nation at its worst needs the church at its best. “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

More than 2000 churches and church leaders were contacted – twice.

I’m sure only a few were missed. Less than 1 per cent responded positively and were committed to praying through the month of November last year. A significantly higher percentage responded negatively, some abusively.

Some church leaders stated that there was no need for revival in the church in New Zealand. One church leader was offended that I would suggest that God judges nations! The vast majority of church leaders and churches responded by not responding.

In Ephesians 5:16, Paul speaks about redeeming the time “because the days are evil”. Vance Havner wrote that the days are evil because of anarchy in the world, apostasy in the church and apathy in the individual believer.

John R. Rice stated that present-day wickedness, apostasy and modern civilisation cannot prevent revival.

Colin Urquhart says revival is about God, His children meeting with God, and the nation being confronted with Him. Dr Andrew Murray wrote that “a revived church is the only hope for a dying world”.

Discussing Christians as ‘Exiles’ In the fourth Century the Roman Emperor, Constantine the Great, adopted Christianity as the state religion and the era known as Christendom began.

Throughout the medieval period and through to early modernity, Christianity held a position of sociological, political, moral and cultural influence (even ‘power’) that was certainly not characteristic of the first three centuries of the Christian movement. Over time, Christendom gradually gave way to secularism. In 1961 Gabriel Vahanian published ‘The Death of God’ arguing that modern secular culture in most of Western Civilization had lost all sense of the sacred or any sense of providence and that for the modern mind: ‘God was dead’.

Appreciating that we now live in a postChristian context, Walter Brueggemann encourages Christians to understand their contemporary culture using the metaphor of ‘exile’. Not in the sense of geography but rather socially, culturally and morally. In a post-Christian society it should not be surprising

that contemporary culture, governmental legislation, mainstream media, and even social media promote ideals some would consider ‘un-Christian’.

It should be expected and need not be cause for alarm. The ‘exile’ despair is not a valid option, nor is assimilation.

Christians must creatively live out in their world faith, hope and love. Don’t sigh and despair. Don’t point the finger and judge. Don’t fire off Bible verses as if they somehow have sway in a secular context. Rather creatively live out the counter narrative of the Bible. Let the light of your life lived in Christ shine all the more brightly as testimony and witness.

Athletic skills celebrated This month’s recipient for Mobility Equipment & Services’ ‘Special Achievers Award’ is Joel Perkins.

Joel, 18, is a student at Aquinas College and has the condition right-sided hemiplegia.

He recently competed in every event at the college’s athletic day – including the long jump, 100metre, 200m and 800m events.

Joel’s efforts and determination earned him the rights to represent Aquinas College in the Western Bay of Plenty annual athletics day.
