FounderandmanagerCharrissaTaylor saidthemovemarkedanexcitingnew chapterforCasitaafteritsprevious Greertonpremiseswasbadlydamaged byfloodinginsevereweatherearlierthis year.
“It’sunfortunatetherewasthis three-monthperiodwhereeveryone wasinlimbo,butintheend,Ithink we’vefoundagoodplacewithgreater opportunities.Ithinkit’sworkedout forthebest.”
SinceleavingtheGreertonpremises, Casitacontinuedoperatingatareduced capacityfromasharedspaceprovided byIdeaServiceswhilesearchingfora permanenthome.
Opportunities,belonging Forthepast10years,Casitahad createdopportunitiesandasense ofbelongingforyoungpeoplewith disabilitiesacrossTaurangaandthe WesternBay.
Taylor,aspecialeducationteacher, foundedtheorganisationafterseeinga numberofstudentsleaveschoolwith
fewmeaningfulopportunities.
“IstartedCasitasothe studentsleavingschoolhad somethingtogotoandaplace tobelong,”shesaid.
Thetrustprovidesaflexible workexperienceenvironment whereyoungadultsdevelop social,workandlifeskillswhile contributingtothecommunity.
“Theycancomeasthey’re able,whenthey’reable,foras longastheycan.Wechallenge thepeopleweworkwith,but wealsounderstandwheretheir limitsare.”
ThenewpremisesonSecond AvewillfeatureCasita’s marketplace,sellingarts,crafts, jewelleryandotherhandmade productscreatedbylocal makers,includingmanypeople withdisabilities.

About25vendors,ofwhom abouthalflivewithdisabilities, wereexpectedtoreturn.
CasitastaffmembersJoeRoweandJoyTaylorwithagroupofCasitians–youngpeoplereadyto startworkattheirnewpremisesthismonth.
Thepremiseswouldalsoincludea cafe,somethingTaylorsaidCasitahad longhopedtoestablish.
“We’vealwayswantedacafebecause it’sawholelotofotherworkexperience opportunities,”shesaid.
Thecafewouldallowparticipantsto learnbaristaskillsandgainexperience preparingandsellingfood.Casitawas alreadyworkingwithcoffeesupplier ExcelsoCoffee,TaurangaCityCouncil andEmployNZtosecurethenecessary foodlicenceandtraining.
Someoftheyoungpeoplealready makecookies,fudgeandbrownies,and Taylorhopedtheseproductswould soonbeavailableforsalethroughthe cafe.
Vitalrole
Shesaidcommunitysupportwould playavitalroleinmakingtheventure successful.
“Myhopeisthatpeoplewillcomeout andsupportusinthecafeandtheshop andjustseehowmuchvalueouryoung
peoplehavetooffer.
“Theycanworkandcontributetoour communityandcreatethingsthatare worthhaving,”Taylorsaid “Foralotofthem,employmentisn’t reallypossibleforallsortsofreasons, whetherit’sanintellectualdisability, epilepsyorsomethingelse.Whatwedo givesthempurposebecauseit’sasafe placewheretheycancontribute.”

Nowinitsfifthyear,theThriftShop BallreturnstoTotaraStreetonSaturday, August8,withonesimpledresscode: wearsomethingthrifted.
OrganiserRachaelStanwayofRozella Presentssaidtheeventhassteadily evolvedfromagrassrootsideaintoaselloutcelebrationofcircularfashion.
"Wesoldoutlastyearandwe'regoing toselloutthisyear,"shesaid."We'reonly about60ticketsaway,soI'mreallyhappy. It'stakenfiveyearstogetittothisstage."

TheworkwouldbedonefromthePlom Rd/PioRdroundaboutthroughtothe SeaforthRdSouthRecreationReserveto strengthenthecriticalarterialrouteand reducetheneedforfuturerepairs,council saidinastatement.

ThecontractorfortheprojectwasJ SwapContractors–andworkwould followastagedconstructiontimeline,she said.
Councilseniorprojectengineerfor transportationworks,JamieMinchington, saidtheprojectwouldinvolveshapingof thewesternroadbermtoformashallow swale,newstormwatercollectionpoints andpiping,newkerbandchanneland outlets,excavatingandrebuildingtheroad structureinlayers,rebuildingaccessways andunderlyingculverts,layingnew
chipseal,andapplyingroadmarkings.
“We’vealsotakencaretoensuretherow oftreesbetweenthesliplanesandmain roadwillnotberemoved...Thesliproads willremaininthesamearrangement astheyarecurrently,andthecentreline willremaininthesamelocation,” Minchingtonsaid.
Duringtheprojectpeoplecouldexpect single-lanestop/gotrafficmanagement, delays,constructionvehiclesandwork crewsoperatingthroughouttheday,and periodsofnoiseandvibration,particularly duringexcavation.

VehicleaccessforSeaforthRdresidents wouldbemaintainedwherepossible indaytimeusingtemporaryramps.
Temporarydrivewayclosureswouldbe requiredattimeswhendrivewayswere rebuilt,andJSwapwouldbeincontact withimpactedresidentsbeforeworkthat directlyaffectedaccessbegan.
“We’readvisingthecommunityto pleaseplanaheadandallowextratravel timewhiletheworksareongoing,” Minchingtonsaid.

“WhenI’vebeenfeelingthelowest, beingabletogotorehearsalsandliterally pretendtobesomeoneelsehasbeen integraltomyemotionalrecovery,” Nicholsonsaid.
NicholsonstarsasViolet,thecharacter famouslyplayedbyLilyTomlininthehit 1980filmthatinspiredthemusical.
DirectorToniHendersonsaidthecast hasralliedaroundNicholsonthroughout herrecovery.

Discoveringthebeachatlast
Grahammovedtothecoastforthebeach lifestyle.At68,theretiredbuilderhadtraded hissuburbanhomeforthebeach,dreamingof dailywalksalongthesand,hearingthewaves atnight.
“I’dmovedhereforthis,”Grahamsays, gesturingatthesweepingcoastline.“ButIwas barelymanagingoneshortwalkaweek.”
Hiswifefacedsimilarchallenges.They’dboth headouttogether,butneithercouldenjoy thebeachproperly.Theirdreamretirement waslookingverydifferentfromwhatthey’d imagined.Allthankstoagingkneesthatdidn’t cooperate.
“Wenevertalkedaboutit,”herecalls.“Just acceptedthatthiswasbecomingourlife. Watchingotherpeoplewalkbywitheaseand enjoywhatwecouldn’t.”
TheturningpointcamewhenGraham stumbledacrossanarticleaboutKoruFX, aNewZealand-madenaturalcreamthat’s becomepopularinlocalpharmacies.

It’s that time of year when soup just soothes the soul – and have we got a recipe for you!
Recently, we asked readers to share their favourite family soup recipes – Stephanie Thomas set in a saliva-starter!
“Here is my AMAZING Chicken Pho recipe,” said Thomas “It is on a biweekly rotation year-round [in my house] The soothing chicken broth and ginger help fight off winter illness You will want to keep this in your rotation all winter long!”
Thomas said she had been perfecting this recipe in the crock pot and the instant pot for the last eight years “It is better than any Vietnamese chicken pho I have found in Aotearoa I know it is a big claim but try it and see for yourself!”
Stephanie omas ’ Chicken Pho
Ingredients
1 whole chicken (or 1-1 2kg chicken pieces)
1 onion, halved
1 large piece ginger, sliced
2-3 star anise
3 cardamom pods
4 whole cloves
1 tsp fennel seeds
1 tsp coriander seeds
1 cinnamon stick
1 tbsp fish sauce
1-2 tsp sugar (optional)
6-7 cups water
Salt to taste
Rice noodles
Fresh herbs (coriander, Thai basil, mint)
Lime wedges
Spring onions
Chilli slices (optional)
Hoisin or sriracha sauce (optional)
Thomas’ pro tip for making the soup is:
“To be more efficient with time, putting the aromatics in some cheesecloth or a singleuse tea bag saves time trying to fish out the aromatics from the broth before serving”

Char the onion, ginger and all the aromatics (star anise, cloves, fennel seeds, coriander seeds, cinnamon) in a dry pan or under the grill until lightly blackened and fragrant
Slow-cooker method:
Add chicken, charred aromatics, fish sauce, sugar and water Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours

Instant pot method: Add chicken, aromatics, fish sauce, sugar, and water
Pressure cook 25 minutes, natural release 10 minutes

Young filmmakers face off
An interstudio screen festival and competition is being planned between two acting studios, one in Tauranga and the other in Wellington.
Young actors from both regions will create, perform in and help produce original short films, with the completed projects to be screened and judged by an industry professional.
"Our studio is collaborating with Wellington's Rātā Studios, one of New Zealand's leading screen acting studios, to create what we believe is a first-of-its-kind interstudio screen festival," Bay of Plenty Actors Studio founder Tanya Horo said Horo, who also founded talent agency T.M. Horo Management, runs film and television acting classes in Tauranga. Past students have gone on to roles in Shortland Street, East of Eden, The Gone, as well as television commercials and feature films
"What excites us most is that the project introduces a spirit of friendly competition
into an industry that is already highly competitive," Horo said
"It gives young creatives the opportunity to collaborate, create original work and gain a deeper understanding of the dedication, resilience and teamwork required to succeed in the screen industry."
Horo said the festival is designed to celebrate emerging talent while giving Bay of Plenty actors the opportunity to connect with fellow young creatives and experience the filmmaking process from concept to screen.
"I am super excited for our short film competition," Rātā Studios Wellington director Joanne Rogers said
"Short films provide a critical place to practise, practise, practise your craft - the ultimate creative playground.

“It’sactuallyareallycoolmomentto walkintothegalleryandseethegroup represented,”Welhamsaid.“It’sbeensuch apositiveperiodofourlivesandthento seethatgoingoutintotheworldthrough ourlittledollshasbeenquiteabuzz.”
ThefiguresbelongtomembersoftheToi AtaataCollective,agroupofsevenwomen whobegancollectingcontemporary NewZealandartduringtheCovid-19 lockdownsin2020.
Ratherthanbuildingindividual collections,thefriendspooledtheir resourcestosupportartistswhilelearning moreaboutcontemporaryart.
“Wethoughtwe’dbeabletosupporta muchlargernumberofartistsandlearn alotmoreaboutart,”Welhamsaid. “Personally,ithelpedusfigureoutwhatwe loved.”
‘Surprisinglyconfronting’
Todaythecollectivejointlyownsabout 22artworks,whichrotatebetween members’homeseverysixmonths. Annualtripstogalleriesandartfairs havebecomeatradition,withmembers debatingandvotingonpotentialpurchases beforeaddingnewworkstotheirshared collection.
Noteveryartworkiseveryone’sfavourite.
“Wehadlotsofconversationsatthe beginningabouthowwewouldn’tonlybe buyingthingsthateachindividualreally loved,”Welhamsaid.“There’soneworkI reallydidn’tlikeatfirst,butonceitlived inmyhouseitbecameabitlikeafriend. Thatbecamepartofthelearningtoo.”
ThehandcraftedmanufeaturedinPrivate Viewaredifferent.Unlikethecollective’s sharedartworks,eachfigureisindividually ownedandwasspeciallycommissioned fromartistTeMaari,whonowlivesinthe UnitedKingdom.
Insteadofsendingphotographs, eachmemberwroteapersonalletter introducingthemselves.Theyalsochose abird-or,inonecase,amoth-thatbest representedthem.
“Itwassurprisinglyconfronting,” Welhamsaid.“Youhadtosumyourselfup injustafewparagraphs.”
Usingthoseletters,TeMaaricreated distinctivefeltandShetlandwoolfigures filledwithdeeplypersonaldetails.
“ImentionedinpassingthatIvery occasionallywearbrightredlipstick,and myfigurehasthesetinylittletouchesof redthroughthehairline.It’sextraordinary howsomeonecanreadthreeparagraphs andcreatesomethingthatfeelslikeyou.”

Awomanwhocampaignedeight yearsagoforanafter-hoursA&E medicalcentreinPāpāmoacalled thedelay“reallydisappointing”.
RutherfordsaidtheGovernment remainedcommittedtodelivering theservice.
“Wesetanambitioustargettoget itopenbythemiddleofthisyear.” Itwasimportantto“getthe overnightstaffingmodelright”.
“We’vebeenworkingthrough accreditationandsustainability issueswiththe[RoyalNew ZealandCollegeofUrgent Care]andACC[Accident CompensationCorporation], andtheresultwillbeamore reliableservicethatcanactuallybe maintainedlong-term.”
RutherfordsaidHealthNew Zealandwasworkingwiththe providertointroduceextended openinghoursinthecoming months“withafull24/7service expectedbyDecemberofthisyear”. Hewouldnotconfirmthe providerbutsaidhewould“inthe

Thenewservicewouldgive Taurangaresidentsbetteraccess tourgentcareclosetohomeand helpeasepressureonthehospital’s emergencydepartment,hesaid.
‘Disappointing’delay
InJuly2018,formerPāpāmoa EastresidentJudyKillalealaunched apetitioncallingforanafter-hours A&EmedicalcentreinPāpāmoa. Itcameafterherhusband Michael,75,diedin2016.Hisarm startedswelling,buthedecidedthe 25-minutedrivefromPāpāmoato TaurangaHospitalwastoofar,and hewouldwaituntilthemorning.
Killalea,whonowlivesin Auckland,toldthe BayofPlenty Times thedelaywas“really disappointing”.
“There’sadesperateneedforit, especiallynowthatTaurangahas grownandPāpāmoahasgrownso much.”
A24-hourmedicalclinic, Consult365Pāpāmoa,openedin January2024butabruptlyclosed inNovemberthatyearbecauseit wasnotfinanciallysustainable.
Killalea’scommentswereputto HealthNZforaresponse.
HealthNZwasalsoaskedwhich provideritwasworkingwith,the reasonbehindthedelays,andfor moreinformationontheprovider extendingitsopeninghours.
InaJuly14statement,provided
afterthisstorywasinitially published,HealthNZMidland TeManawaTakiregional planning,fundingandoutcomes directorNicolaEhausaidthe agencyremainedcommittedto implementinga24/7urgentcare serviceinTauranga.
“Weareworkingcloselywith thecurrenturgentcareprovider inTaurangatoensureafter-hours servicesaresustainable,reliable, andabletomeetthelong-term needsofthecommunity.”
Ehausaidspecificoperatinghours andwhenthesewouldtakeeffect werestillbeingfinalised.
Theobjectivewastobeopen24/7 byDecember.
Ehausaidthetimingofthe serviceexpansiondepended onworkforceavailabilityand “operationalreadiness”toensureit couldbedeliveredsafely,effectively, andsustainably.
Shesaidthenewurgentand after-hoursframeworkprovidedfor anadditionaleveningandweekend serviceinTauranga.HealthNZ wouldbeginplanningforits implementationfrommid-2027.
Inthemeantime,Accidentand HealthCareTaurangaprovided walk-inurgentcareservicesseven daysaweekfrom8amto8pmfor urgentbutnon-life-threatening conditions,Ehausaid.

TheGovernmentannouncedinMaylastyearthatTaurangawould havearound-the-clockurgenthealthcareservicebymid-2026.

RoyalNewZealandCollege ofUrgentCarechiefexecutive AdrianMetcalfesaiditsetthe requirementsthataccreditedurgent careclinicsmustmeettosupport safe,high-qualitypatientcare. Thestandardsweredesignedto ensureappropriateclinicalstaffing acrossallhoursofoperation. Individualproviderswere responsibleforimplementing andmaintainingthesestandards, Metcalfesaid. ACCactingdeputychief executiveofsystemcommissioning andperformanceEldonPaeasaid ACCcontinuedtofundinjuryrelatedurgentcareservicesin
Taurangaviaitsurgentcareclinic contract,whichhadbeenextended untilJune30,2027. Thisensuredcontinuityofservices andcertaintyforproviderswhile ACCcontinuedworkingwith HealthNZonamoresustainable commissioningmodelforurgent andafter-hourscare.
AMay2025HealthNZ documentsaidthecurrenturgent caresystemwas“fragmented”with “inconsistentserviceavailabilityand fundingmodelsacrossthecountry”. Theagencywasworkingtowards deliveringa“morenationally consistent”service,where98% ofNewZealanderscouldaccess carewithinaone-hourdriveof theirhomes.

ForŌtūmoetaiGolfClub memberLynetteWhitehead,that dreamhascometruenotonce, butthreetimes-withtwoofthose remarkableshotscominginthe past12months.
Herlatestholeinonecameon July 1, justweeksafteranotherace on May 27 Herfirstwasbackin 2013, making the recentdouble feat all the more extraordinary.
“There isn't really a secret,”
Whitehead laughs.“You just look at the hole, hit the ball and hope it
doeesn'tgointhedrain.Thenit's quitteexcitingwhenyouseeit disaappearintothehole.”
Shhehasbeenplayinggolfsince shewas13.GrowingupinMount Maunganuiafterherfamily movvedfromHamiltoninthe late e 1950s,Whiteheadattended MountMaunganuiPrimaryand Colllegeandwouldoftenhead totthegolfcourseduringafree periiodatschool.
“WWeusedtosneakout,playa couupleofholes,thengobackto schoool,”shesaid.
Allthoughsheplayedfordecades, Whhiteheaddidn'tofficially obtaainahandicapuntiljoining ŌtūūmoetaiGolfClubin2010.
“Istartedonahandicapofabout 26,gotdowntonineafterafew yearrs,andnowI'mplayingoff17,” shesaid.
ShheplayseveryTuesdaywith theclub’swomen’scompetition and joinsmixedveterans’golfon
Wednesdays,whenplayersare drawnintodifferentgroupseach week.
ForWhitehead,however,golfis aboutfarmorethanchasingthe perfectshot.
“Ijustlovethecamaraderie,” shesaid.“It'sateamsportaswell asanindividualsport.Ilovethe competition,butIalsolovegoing awaywiththeteam.It'sreallygood forthesoul.”
ŌtūmoetaiGolfClubmaybeone ofthesmallerclubsintheregion, butWhiteheadsaiditregularly punchesaboveitsweight,with membersenjoyingsuccessinBay ofPlentypennantcompetitions againstclubsincludingŌmokoroa, Ōmanu,Fairview,TePuke,Waihī andTauranga.
“Wedoverywellforourlittle clubbecausewedon'thavevery manypeopletochoosefrom,”she said.

PublishedinMay,thenovelfollowsfictionalIrish soldierFinbarKelly,whotravelstoNewZealandin1863 afterenlistingintheBritishImperialArmy,hopingto earnalandgrantandbuildanewlife.Instead,hefinds himselfcaughtupintheNewZealandWars,wherehis understandingoftheconflictischallengedashewitnesses therealitiesofcolonisation,brokenpromisesandthe humancostofwar.
Thenovelfollowshislife,asasagaintothenext generation,upto1918.“Ibecameincreasinglyinterested inNewZealandhistory,”saidCarstensen,whobegan researchingthesubjectin2018afterreadinghistorian VincentO’Malley’s TheGreatWarforNewZealand “IreadmoreandmorearoundNewZealandhistory andcameupwiththeideaofusinghistoricalfictionto placeinventedcharactersintothathistoricalbackground.”
CarstensenchoseanIrishprotagonistafterrecognising parallelsbetweenIreland’shistoryofcolonisationand eventsinNewZealandduringthe19thcentury.
Alongsideitshistoricalsetting, Journeys exploresthemes ofconscience,redemptionandChristianfaith.
Carstensensaidthenoveltookseveralyearstocomplete. Hebeganwritingin2019,thenleftthemanuscript untouchedforatimebeforereturningtoitwithfresh ideasandfeedbackfromfellowwriters.
OriginallyfromDenmark,Carstensenspenthis childhoodinCanadabeforeimmigratingtoNewZealand at13.AnEnglishteacherbyprofession,hetaughtEnglish
literatureand Englishto international students, includingat theUniversity ofWaikato’s PathwaysColl andalsospent twoanda halfyears teachingin China.

ŌtūmoetaiGolfClubnowhas about400membersandwelcomes newgolfersofallabilities.
