Hawaii bound Eight Mount Maunganui College surfers are preparing to represent New Zealand at the prestigious Honua Finals in Hawaii this month after earning an invitation to the world-renowned schools surfing event.

The invitation-only competition, often described as the World Cup of

Interscholastic Surfing, will be held at Ala Moana Bowls on Oahu from July 23-26 and features top school surfing teams from around the globe.

Coach Andrew Fredrickson said the invitation is a significant achievement for the school and its athletes. “Our surfers

from Mount Maunganui College have been recognised internationally as being of this calibre,” he said.

The travelling squad includes eight student surfers and two coaches. Among them are Noah Ramsbottom, 15, and Izzy Evans, 16, (pictured).

The team has been training hard while fundraising to help cover travel costs and will carry the support of the Mount community as they take on some of the world’s best young surfers.

The bunny is still AWOL this week, so here’s one his scribbles of wisdom from back in June 2023. Enjoy!

We are frittering our lives away. But what really chafes the thighs, what really curdles the cream, is that it’s happening unwittingly. Our time is being frittered for us.

Five or 10 minutes at a time, quarter of an hour here, half an hour there. Our most precious gift. Taken by stealth.

I was doing Stuff’s quiz, as I do every morning and afternoon. In itself a sad statement on my life. I look forward to the Stuff quiz. Perhaps I need therapy? Or a pet. Or a hobby. Or a partner. A pet I think.

Because one of the Stuff questions said that a study has tallied the number of months of a driver’s life (insert your name) – that have been spent waiting for red lights to turn green. Three, six, 12 or 18?

What do you think?

The answer is six. So of the 864 months I have been on the planet, six of them have been spent edging ever closer to the grave, at red lights. You can’t use the time productively like playing Wordle or checking emails – you are limited in how you use those empty moments.

Rhinotillexomania

You can choose from rhinotillexomania (picking your nose), suspiration (sighing),

needlessly adjusting your manhood (selfexplanatory), or checking the precise origin of your borborygmus (intestinal gurgling).

Each one of them useful but hardly fulfilling. You wouldn’t want to die in the process, you wouldn’t want it to be your last act on the planet. “Oh JB had a happy life and ended it with a flourish – his index finger up his nose and his large intestine rumbling. And at a red light.”

The traffic planners are playing God. They have stolen .694 per cent of my life from me while I have waited at red lights.

I bet they sit watching me on CCTV, snickering as my time ebbs.

It takes about five minutes to do 15 Stuff multiple choice questions – 10 minutes out of my life every day. Ten minutes I don’t get back. Two-and-a-half days of my year. At age 72, I have already used my allotted three score years and 10…‘the days of our years’, according to the Bible. I am clinging to any time I have in the bank. So should I really fritter two-a-half days each year scoring ‘nice try’ or ‘you can do better’ at Stuff trivia quizzes?

“What about Waka Kotahi?” shrilled an outraged colleague and Katikati commuter.

“Waka Kotahi, servants of the people, robbing us blind at the same time.”

She refers to the 16.4km, 34-minute, commuter trip down State Highway 2 from Katikati to Tauranga that can involve staring up someone’s exhaust pipe for oneand-a-half hours.

So five return trips each week crawling or stopped dead. The lost time is something

we can’t reclaim. So perhaps they could bill Waka Kotahi $35 an hour for all the fulsome enjoymeent and happiness arbitrarily stripped from our lives whille trying to negotiate SH2?

The kettle

I am watching the kettle boil as I ponder all this. And when it whistles and turns off, I am remindeed another three or four minutes of noon-productive time has been cut off my liffe.

Do the math – four cups of Darjjeelingg a day, every day for a year. If I started boiling the kettle, as a serious tea drinker, aged 20, that’s nearly another seven months off my life….with nothing to show. Frittered on a trifle. Plus the time spent at red traffic lights.

Perhaps I should research constructive, productive, uplifting, rewarding activities waiting for a kettle to boil. For example – maybe I could pack my whole daily exercise routine into that four minutes.

And now I’ve got Iron Maiden’s song ‘Wasted Years’ crashing round in my head.

“Now understand, Don’t waste your time always searching for those wasted years.”

I find Iron Maiden loud aggressive and mangled even when I’m just scribbling down their lyrics.

Hey yeah! Makkes me wonder fleecing me of my who else is fl golden yeears? For one...the very persson who swore the Hippoocratic Oath to d specific ethical uphold dards to promote stand my longevity.

The doctor Th – att $50-$60 a ultation on how consu to best preserve or extend what time I have left. Butt I gobble up 30 to 40 minutes of it in the waiting room. That’s 2.6 hours a year of my life if I make four appointments.

I could have seen a couple of movies, re-arranged my socks draw, taken a pumice to the callouses on my feet. Endless excitement and joy. But no – I was waiting and wasting.

Nailed it

Psychiatrist Elisabeth Kuble-Ross – she’s studied near-death, which at 72, puts me right in her study demographic.

Elisabeth nailed it. “It’s only when we truly understand we have a limited time on earth, and have no way of knowing when our time is up, that we will begin to live each day to its fullest, as if it were the only one we had.” There are no credits for waiting at red lights or watching the kettle boil. And it’s not that we have little time, but more that we waste a good deal of the time we do have. Or someone else does.

Medical centre’s rural funding contract remains A Bay of Plenty medical centre that feared having to cut services amid funding reforms will keep its rural contract for another year.

Katikati Medical Centre co-owner and GP Dr Vicky Jones said she was “quite relieved” Health NZ reforms to rural funding were not going ahead this year.

There was, however, “still a bit of a guillotine hanging over our head” for next year, with changes not completely off the table.

Jones told NZME in April the centre could be reclassified as “urban” under potential new funding provisions from July 1.

She said losing its rural contract, worth “several hundred thousand dollars”, may mean cutting hours and services, and patients having to travel to Tauranga for care on weekends, public holidays and for “anything complicated”.

Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora said at the time it was reviewing rural fundingg nationally after recommendations for a “nationallyy consistent” framework.

Health NZ confirmed on June 24 4 the proposal to “redistribute rural funding based d on a standard methodology” was withdrawn folloowing sector feedback.

The agency’s final funding offer will w provide general practice with an additional $120.6 6 million each year and includes $3.1m for rural practtices that did not previously receive rural funding.

Health NZ said a working group to “further refine” the rural funding framework would be established ahead of the 2027-2028 negotiations.

He said from July 1, the formula used to distribute funding to general practice – known as capitation funding – would change for the first time in more than 20 years.

Previously, funding was based on the age and sex of enrolled patients and did not include other indicators of health needs or the cost of delivering care in different areas.

Brown said the funding formula would also include multimorbidity, rurality and socioeconomic deprivation, “better recognising the real health needs of the people each clinic serves”.

Health NZ’s funding offer included a 6.32% increase to base capitation rates, and ensured every practice received at least a 4% increase after capitation reweighting.

Jones said she was happy capitation was being reweighted but she would prefer ethnicity to have been included.

She said some practices would lose money in the new deal and would need transition funding, which was also not what she wanted.

She said Katikati Medical Centre’s funding was not going up 6.32% and its fees were going up slightly “to get us to the 6.32%”.

Big changes

Health Minister Simeon Brown said on June 19 that 86% of GP clinics voted in favour of Health NZ’s 2026-27 funding package.

Appointments for those aged 18 and older would rise from $58 to $62 and ACC appointments from $45 to $50, Jones said.

Prices for Community Service Card holders would not change, she said.

Under pressure

In a June 19 statement, General Practice Owners Association chairman Dr Angus Chambers said the capitation reweighting represented “a historic vote for historic change”.

Chambers said the package reflected the Government’s willingness to address “long-standing flaws” in the funding system but not every practice would benefit equally.

About 20% of practices may come “under greater pressure than usual” to increase fees in future years as the transition arrangements wind down, he said.

Chambers said the sector would push for further improvements when the funding model was reviewed in 2028. Including ethnicity would be part of those discussions.

Formula to be reviewed again

Health NZ funding, community and mental health acting director Martin Hefford said the reweighted capitation formula would “better target funding at those with the greatest need”.

While the new formula was recognised as an improvement, “it is certainly not perfect” and was intended to be reviewed in 2028.

Hefford said some practices gained less than the 6.32% increase because of the changes to the formula but Health NZ would top those practices up to at least a 4% uplift.

“We expect that most consultation fees will remain stable this year because of the uplifts.”

He said Health NZ was committed to working with the sector to ensure funding arrangements supported equitable and sustainable access to primary care services for communities across New Zealand.

Five striking new murals now brighten Greerton Village following the inaugural Greerton Whakanuia Kotahitanga Mural Festival.

Organisers say the project has already left a lasting legacy.

The festival saw artists transform walls on Cameron Rd, Chadwick Rd, Greerton Rd and Mitchell St from June 15-26, creating large-scale public artworks celebrating Greerton’s people, culture and identity.

The festival was overseen by the Greerton Business Association and managed by Greerton Village Mainstreet manager Mel Carullo.

It was initiated by Tauranga artist and curator Sam Allen, who worked with the community to select mural sites and develop concepts. Artist Tautoko Matehaere coordinated the artists during painting alongside Carullo.

She said the festival was embraced by residents and visitors alike. “The Greerton Village Mural Festival

has been an incredible experience, with locals and visitors enjoying the chance to watch our talented artists bring these stunning murals to life in real time,” she said.

“As the five artists worked on their murals, the public stopped by to say hello and watch them at work. Our artists have loved connecting with the community and sharing their creative process along the way.”

She said the festival celebrated Greerton’s identity, diversity and community spirit, while creating public artwork that would be enjoyed for many years.

The five participating artists were Tautoko Matehaere, Marsh Pearson, Manea Ngatai, Louis Mikaere and Millie Pidwill.

Matehaere said despite a few logistical challenges, including wet weather, stolen batteries from an elevated work platform and access issues at one site, the project was overwhelmingly successful.

“It was great to interact with the public. I probably spoke to more than 200 people over the week and the

feedback was awesome. The main comments I got were that Greerton really needed this. People were happy to see some colour go up on the walls because they’ve been wanting something like this for so long.”

He said the public’s response kept the artists motivated. “We got to see five amazing new murals painted in Greerton and the community loved it.”

Alth hough h a few peoplle expressed d diff ffering ff opinions about some of the artworks, Matehaere said that was part of creating public art. “You can’t please everyone. Art is subjective and we’re used to that. Working in public art, people are always going to have different opinions, but the response overall was overwhelmingly positive.”

Carullo thanked Tauranga City Council for funding the festival, and Greerton Business Association Board, Greerton Village School, Creative Bay of Plenty, local businesses, mural hosts and residents who stopped to encourage the artists throughout the fortnight.

A small informal mural blessing ceremony will take place outside Greerton Library on Rosalie Liddle Crawford July 8 at 1pm.

Night viewings inside city’s historic house

A historical property in Tauranga City will open its doors for four special evenings this month, allowing visitors to experience the home as it would have fared on a winter’s evening in yesteryear.

Brain Watkins House at 233 Cameron Rd was built in 1881 by Joseph Brain and was registered by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as a Category II Historic Place.

Occupied by one family for nearly 100 years and filled with original contents, the house offers an insight into the life of a middle class European family of the late 19th and early 20th centuries The house normally opens to the public on Sundays from 2pm-4pm.

The special evening viewings will be on July 6-9 from 5pm-7pm.

The events will feature stories about the arrival of electricity in Tauranga, an outdoor Matariki constellation display.

To take the chill off and celebrate the earth and heavens, kūmara soup will be for sale.

Inspired by volunteer house guide Bronwyn Griffiths, the events are a fundraiser for Tauranga Historical Society, which is responsible for management, preservation and display of the Brain Watkins House Museum.

Those keen are encouraged to rug up.

Entry is $5 per adult and children gain free entry.

A total of $170,000 is available this year, including $110,000 through the General Fund for social, recreational and cultural initiatives, and $60,000 through the Environmental Fund for projects that support the natural environment.

The fund is designed to back projects where communities are already contributing their own time, skills, materials or fundraising efforts.

Council can contribute up to 50 per cent of the total project cost, with applicants making up the balance – for example, through volunteer time, donated professional services and materials, and fundraising or donations.

Ideas into action

Council general manager strategy and community Annika Lane said the fund recognises the value of community efforts and helps local groups turn ideas into action. “Amazing things can be achieved when people come together with a shared goal, and combine their time, skills and resources. We encourage community groups and organisations to think about projects that will make a lasting difference and apply for funding,” she said.

The fund supports projects that meet a community need and deliver clear public benefits, including new initiatives or pilot projects, one-off community projects or events, equipment and materials, environmental projects, communication or education initiatives; and some projectrelated operating costs directly tied to delivering a funded activity.

One of last year’s successful recipients was Te Ranga School, which received $5000 towards its new junior play space.

The project included a sensory garden, flowing stream, mud kitchen, sandpit, play café and a stage with musical instruments, creating an engaging outdoor environment where children can learn, play and explore.

Te Ranga School principal Aimee Kennedy said they were thrilled with the outcome of their new junior play space.

“This area has brought creativity and imaginative play back to life for our tamariki (children),” she said.

“Not only are students having fun, but they are also developing important social, fine motor, and gross motor skills through play. This project has been a gamechanger for our school, and it has been fantastic to see members of our wider community enjoying the space outside of school hours.”

Drop-in sessions

To help people understand the fund and application process, council is hosting five drop-in question and answer sessions across the district. Each session will run for 90 minutes, starting at 11.30am.

Sessions will be held July 13 at Te Puke Library; July 14 at Ōmokoroa Library; July 15 at Pātuki Manawa (Katikati Library); July 16 at Te Ara Mātauranga - Waihī Beach Library; and July 17 at Maketū Community Centre.

High Tea too help those in need Drop off knitted goods!

An afternoon of elegant dining, friendship and generosity will help support two important community causes.

The Rotary Club of Tauranga Te Papa is hosting a High Tea and Charity Auction this month on Saturday, July 11, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm at Bethlehem Baptist Church.

The fundraising event is being organised by the club’s new women and children health and wellbeing committee in partnership with Tauranga Days for Girls.

Committee member Maria Dangerfield said proceeds from the event will go towards refurbishing the playground at the Open Home Foundation’s Oasis House and providing supplies for the Days for Girls programme.

“Every ticket purchased and every bid placed will help support two outstanding causes that are making a real difference in our community,” Dangerfield said.

Oasis House provides family-based overnight respite care for children with high needs, including those with autism spectrum disorder or intellectual disabilities, giving families and whānau valuable support while ensuring children receive quality care in a home-like environment.

The High Tea follows a recent Rotary working bee at Oasis House, where volunteers from Tauranga Te Papa Rotary and Days for Girls began phase one of refurbishing the facility’s outdoor area.

“As usual, we are putting on a morning tea at 10am, followed by a short presentation with video from the field. Various rest homes and the like can bring a van of people to see the display.”

Marsh said knitted donations must be new and above children’s size 4 – preferably of woollen content. “Toiletries, children’s small toys and games, footwear and newly-purchased warm clothing will also be accepted.”

Champion budgie takess top honours After more than five decades breeding budgerigars, Tony and Robyn Grinter have added another accolade to their collection of prizes, winning Best Budgerigar in Show at Tauranga Bird Club’s annual bird show.

The Welcome Bay couple’s striking opaline grey-green bird beat about 160 other entries for the coveted title at the show in June.

For Tony and Robyn, breeding budgerigars is far more than a hobby. Their dedication to the birds has seen them become respected breeders, exhibitors and judges on the national birdshow circuit.

“We’re always looking to breed birds that are closer to the standard,” Tony said. “You’re looking at shape, colour and overall quality. It’s a challenge, and that’s part of what makes it so enjoyable.”

The winning bird is 3 years old and stood out for its quality and presentation, impressing judges in a highly competitive field.

Ribbons and friendshipss

The Grinters are no strangers to the t show bench. Over the years they have h exhibited at bird shows throughou ut the North Island, and have collectted numerous awards along the way.

Both Tony and Robyn are also qu ualified judges and regularly travel the cou untry supporting bird shows and fellow

breeders.

While ribbons and trophies are rewarding, Tony said the friendships formed through the bird community are equally important.

“We’ve met a lot of friends through bird shows, not just in Tauranga but all around the country.”

The couple moved to Tauranga from Hamilton in 2020, joining the Tauranga Bird Club, which has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years after membership numbers once dipped. num “Taurangga is currently one of the strongest clubs.

Baron said show-goers travelled from as far as Auckland and Hamilton, with many commenting that it was one of the best bird shows they had experienced in years.

A boost

The successful event also provided a boost for the club’s future, with nearly 30 new members signing up, boosting the club membership to nearly 100.

“That’s probably the best outcome for me,” Baron said. “It’s wonderful to see people discovering the hobby and wanting to become involved.

“This year we invited people to join the club for free up until the 31st of August, because that’s the end of our financial year. They can see what we’re about, and if they like us, can join up for the new year starting on the first of September.”

Pursuit continues

For Tony and Robyn, there is little time to rest on their latest success. The pair will soon travel to Oamaru for the Budgerigar Society’s annual show and AGM, where they will join fellow enthusiasts.

Back home, the next generation of young birds is already being assessed and paired, as the couple continue their pursuit of breeding excellence.

Price increase for rubbish tags and loose green waste in Western Bay This week the price of Pay-AsYou-Throw (PAYT) rubbish tags and loose green waste drop-offs increased for Western Bay of Plenty residents.

Western Bay of Plenty Council announced the changes in its weekly news email, saying the price increases were because of the rising costs to deliver the services. From July 1 a PAYT rubbish tag increased from $4.80 each to $5.20. The charge for loose green waste dropped off at the council’s recycling and green waste centres increased from $30 to $45 per cubic metre.

The change brought the cost of

loose green waste into line with charges of bagged green waste, the council said, “so people are paying a similar amount for a similar volume of green waste, regardless of how it arrives at the transfer station”.

The council also advised that while $5.20 is the RRP (recommended retail price) for the PAYT tag, retailers could set their own prices. “Residents looking for the lowest-priced PAYT tags can purchase them from council libraries and service centres, where they are sold at the RRP.” Find out more at: www.westernbay.govt.nz/ council/news-and-updates

Eight Mount Maunganui College surfers are preparing to take on some of the world’s best young wave riders after qualifying for the Honua Finals in Hawaii this month.

The invitation-only event, known as the World Cup of Interscholastic Surfing, will bring together top school surfing teams from around the globe from July 23-26 at Ala Moana Bowls on Oahu.

Mount Maunganui College teacher and coach Andrew Fredrickson said being invited to compete is a significant achievement for the school and its surfers.

“Our surfers from Mount Maunganui College have been recognised internationally as being of this calibre.”

The team was selected based on performances in Surfing New Zealand events, school competitions and Bay Boardriders contests, as well as commitment to training, team culture and school achievement.

Surfing has long been a strong part of life at Mount Maunganui College, with about 100 students taking part in coaching and training programmes each year.

The couple who got their retirement back Patricia’s internal alarm goes off at 5am every morning. It has done this for 50 years.

Her eyes open. The bedroom is still dark. The house is quiet except for the first birds starting their chorus. She’s awake. But she’s not really awake.

“I lie there feeling like I’ve been hit by a truck,” the 73-year-old explains. “My body clock would wake me up right on time, but the rest of me hasn’t caught up.”

At 73, Patricia still tends to her garden, takes daily walks through town, and catches local shows when they come through. Her husband, 75, does the same. They’re the kind of couple who’ve been married so long they walk in sync without thinking about it.

Retirement was supposed to be their reward for decades of work.

“We earned this,” Patricia says. “We did everything right. Retirement was supposed to be when we finally got to enjoy it all.”

But somewhere around 60, sleep started changing. Not dramatically at first, just lighter, less restorative. Then her husband began experiencing the same thing. Now instead of waking at 5am ready for the day, they were both waking feeling drained and not excited for the day.

The morning walks became harder first. Then the garden became a chore. By lunchtime, they’d both be exhausted.

“The worst part was watching each other decline,” Patricia admits. “He was grumpy. I was snappy. We just weren’t ourselves.”

The crystallising moment came on a Thursday evening. They’d bought tickets to a local show.

At 6:30pm, Patricia found her husband

Dream come true

For Year 12 student Izzy Evans, 16, the opportunity to compete internationally is a dream come true.

“It feels so unreal to have this amazing opportunity,” she said.

“I’m just so overly excited; words can’t even explain.”

Evans said she “literally jumped up and down with excitement” when she found out she was heading to Hawaii.

Surfing plays a major role in her life. “If I’m having a hard or stressful day, I will just head out for a surf in the beautiful ocean, and it always clears my mind.”

She is particularly looking forward to meeting surfers from around the world and testing herself against international competition.

“I’m also looking forward to being able to surf in togs again in warm water in beautiful Hawaii.”

In preparation for the event, the team has been focusing on surf technique, competition strategy, and strength and conditioning training.

They also drew inspiration from watching the World Surf League Championship Tour event heats at Manu Bay, Raglan, earlier this year.

While the opportunity is exciting, getting a team to Hawaii comes with high costs, including flights, accommodation, competition fees, uniforms, insurance, food and transport.

Fundraising

The team has been fundraising through the sale of specially designed T-shirts and are currently working on boardshorts and hats.

The shirts were created by local designer Steve Kirkby of Parkby Projects and draw inspiration from the story of Te Toka a Tirikawa, reflecting themes of resilience and standing strong through adversity.

Fredrickson said community support has already been strong with sponsorship from Aaron Cook at Bay Sport and Orthopaedics, Stonewood Homes, Bay Instruments, Bower Real Estate, E.C. Cheetham Transport, DW Butcher & Co. and Craigs Investment Partners as well as previous support from Curve Surf and NZWindows. “There is a big cost for our top competitive surfers to get to events,” he said.

“We hope to use an awesome product that we can sell to the public that helps us raise some money and is a win-win for everyone.”

Hartstone agrees. “We are a great group of local kids who are out doing what we love and need all the support we can get.”

Super tough

While both surfers have competitive goals, they are also determined to make the most of the experience. “I think everyone would like to win, but the competition is going to be super tough,” Evans said.

“My goal would be to at least make it through a couple of rounds and enjoy the experience.”

Hartstone’s goal is simple: “Make it through my first heat and then progress as far as I can”.

BOPRC chair Matemoana McDonald said the process was an opportunity to consider what future arrangements would best support the region over time.

“There is a clear direction of travel for local government reform, and it is important the Bay of Plenty is part of that conversation,” she said in a statement.

“The feedback we receive through this process is about understanding what matters most to our communities and stakeholders as those discussions develop, including how services are delivered, how decisions are made, and how local and regional interests are balanced.”

The council is seeking feedback on a range of possible approaches to local government in the region. These included models with different combinations of regional and local structures, each with distinct strengths and trade-offs.

McDonald said any future model should be considered on how well it delivers for the whole region, and noted that many of the services people rely on operate beyond individual council boundaries.

“Flood protection, river and catchment management, biosecurity, regional planning, environmental monitoring and public transport all depend on coordinated delivery across the region,” she said.

“At the same time, any future arrangement must ensure local communities have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect them.”

Cost and efficiency

McDonald said cost and efficiency were important considerations in this process, and the evidence so far suggested some subregional models may not deliver these benefits as effectively as a region-wide approach.

“The analysis to date suggests a regionwide model is better placed to deliver long-term efficiencies for the Bay of Plenty, particularly through shared services, and clearer accountability.

“Sub-regional models may offer a stronger sense of local visibility, but they can also create extra cost and complexity where functions, capability and systems need to be repeated across multiple organisations. That can make it harder to achieve the simplicity, consistency and coordination this reform is intended to deliver.”

All implications

McDonald said it was important that all implications were carefully considered through the Head Start process, both financial and non-financial.

“Our focus must be on finding the model that works best for the whole Bay of Plenty over the long term.”

While regional councils could not submit a proposal to the Government for reorganisation under its Head Start pathway, McDonald said they could contribute to regional discussions and provide context on how services are currently delivered.

“Our role is to support informed discussion by providing evidence and practical insight into how regional services operate, and what needs to be considered in any future model.”

I ran round the house copying them for days though it was hardly a political awakening, what with being eight and not knowing what a union was.

New Zealand does not have a great lineage of political songs.

Sure, we remember the heady days of Herbs’ French Letter and the protesting Topp Twins, post-punk band Blam Blam Blam’s There is No Depression In New Zealand and The Knobz’s Culture. But the very fact that those were 40 years ago rather reinforces the point.

I struggle to think of much political music since outside the rap/hip-hop/ reggae scene.

You’d think these would be ideal times for writing and releasing music in immediate reaction to current events. Yet, despite the technology making it easier than ever, it’s uncommon. At least Bruce Springsteen’s been doing it in reaction to America’s authoritarian crackdown.

And hats off to Wellington bluesman Darren Watson, who just released a new song, Move On, in response to current initiative of shuffling the homeless to places where they won’t disturb decent folk like you and me.

Bingo fundraiser hits $2000 for guide dog cause Pāpāmoa residents are turning a simple game of bingo into meaningful community support, with a weekly session already raising thousands for charity just weeks after launching.

Pāpāmoa Lions Club raised $2000 from its Wednesday bingo sessions at the Flying Mullet Sports Bar, with the first donation going towards training a guide dog for Blind Low Vision NZ. It’s the national organisation supporting people who are blind, deafblind or have low vision, to live independently.

A key part of its work is the guide dog programme, which provides specially trained dogs to assist with mobility and confidence.

The funds from the Pāpāmoa Lions Club were formally presented to Lions district governor Lou Fielder, supporting her chosen project – a guide dog puppy named Lulu.

The initiative, launched just a few months ago, was designed to do more than raise money.

Lions member Steven Jensen said the daytime sessions were intentionally created to offer a social outing for people who may not want to go out at night.

“It’s a very easy game to play and anyone can join in,” Jensen said.

“People come along for a bit of fun, but they also like knowing they’re helping the community.”

The weekly sessions have steadily grown, now attracting about 40 players each week.

For many, it has become a regular social catch-up, with small groups of friends attending together.

Jensen said being able to clearly show where the money was going has helped build support.

“With the guide dog, for example, we bring it in and show the bingo players – this is where your money is going. People really connect with that.”

The $2000 milestone was reached within about six to eight weeks, highlighting both the popularity of the sessions and the generosity of those attending.

Without community backing, the Lions Club would struggle to carry out its work, Jensen said.

“Besides raising funds, it also helps people understand what Lions does in the community,” he said.

“Traditionally, we just get on and do things quietly, but people are more likely to support us if they can see the impact.”

The club plans to continue running the sessions, with more local projects already in the pipeline – including support for a sporting group, a school initiative and potential community safety equipment.

Jensen said initiatives like the bingo nights resonated so strongly because the benefits were local.

“We try to put money back into Pāpāmoa. When people know it’s staying in the community, that resonates

with them.”

Blind Low Vision NZ chief executive Andrea Midgen said donations help people access the life-changing support of a guide dog.

“They support every stage of the programme – from breeding and puppy raising through to specialist training and matching each dog with the right person.”

It costs about $175,000 to breed, train and support a fully qualified guide

dog over its working life, Midgen said, covering everything from breeding and specialist training to ongoing care.

Guide dog services receive no government funding, relying entirely on donations and community support.

“Every donation helps fund programmes that support people to move through their day with greater confidence and connection.”

Mount Art Group relocates annual show A long-standing Mount Maunganui art collective is inviting the public to experience its latest exhibition, relocated this year following disruption at Mauao.

The Mount Art Group, established in 1974, has grown from 21 members meeting in a tutor’s garage to a thriving collective of 40 artists. Now in its 52nd year, the group continues to meet weekly at St Peter’s Church Hall on Victoria St, where members gather every Thursday morning to create and share their work.

Known for its supportive and encouraging culture, the group places a strong emphasis on fostering creativity and appreciation among its members, many of whom have developed their artistic skills within the collective environment.

Churches Active In Our Community To the modern ear, the phrase ‘Life without limits’ sounds like a great thing to embrace.

Imagine having the ability to go wherever you want to go, do whatever you want to do, and achieve whatever you set your heart to. There are plenty of voices around us advocating we embrace this as a life credo.

However, on closer examination we may find that these voices are like that of the sirens of Greek mythology drawing us on towards the rocks of ruin. It was supposedly to life without limits that the serpent, depicted in Genesis 3 drew Adam and Eve. The implicit lie was that, “God’s limit is keeping you from your best life”.

Actually, life without limits, is a life of excess, chaos, anarchy and loss. It is, in essence, a description of hell.

Like King Midas of old, we find that the golden touch actually robs us of all that is good. In overabundant gaining, we lose the things in life that are of most value.

The truth is, that God has not kept us from the best, but kept us for the best; that His limits are His love in action, protecting all that is sacred, beautiful and worthwhile in life.
