An ill wind blows nobody good I have endured more than 70, some a lot more butt-biting than others.

So I have good reason to hate winter. I hate being arbitrarily deprived of daylight. I hate the weather dictating what I should wear, what I can and can’t do, and how it impacts our moods.

Cold, grey day equals crappy mood.

It’s said winter isn’t a season but a fullblown, dawn-to-dark slog to keep warm, stable and vaguely happy.

And it’s a fact a moderate climate improves the mood of people by setting off serotonin, the happy juice, and lowering stress. We will need it – we have a general election and four tests against the Springboks, in their backyard, coming up.

“Kom maar op!!” they’re crying on the veldt. “Bring it on!” That’ll raise the temperature a bit.

Burn your socks

But imagine a moderate-plus climate with a “sweet spot” of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius.

Burn your sockks and d singllets. I was taugh ht to hate the cold by a cruel, sadistic teacher – a sou’wester straight off the Ross Ice Shelf.

As a kid in the deep south, I would cycle home into that bitter wind, which would blow, rain, hail and sleet sideways up the leg of your school shorts. It attacked your boyhood. I hated it.

We shouldn’t hate. It occupies too much bad space in your head and heart. But I

hate winter like I hate cold tripe and onions and hangovers. And the Crusaders winning Super Rugby. Again.

Charlie agrees about winter. Charlie, Charles Dickens.

As a Londoner, the great novelist would have preferred Saracens over the Crusaders. I can bang on about winter but when Dickens does it, we listen.

“It was a dark, cold, gloomy day…” quilled Charlie in his novel Bleak House. “…with a drizzling rain that seemed to soak into the very bones, and a fog so thick you could see nothing”.

Doesn’t that make you shiver and shudder with the “bleak”.

Burst into flames

Then Dickens gave us some warmth, a break from “bleak”. He has the character Krook dying from spontaneous human combustion – SHC – he simply burst into flames and reduced to ashes. SHC was a literary tool to save us slipping into a hypothermic coma, “bleaking” out before finisshing Blleakk House. fi Iriish writer Bram Stoker’s genre was gothic and d vampire horror – he wrote Dracula. He hateed winter too.

“Th The sky is dead, cold, leaden, grey, the Th win nd a low faint moan. And the world looks as iff it’s dying.”

Grrief – you’d feel like ending it all.

SH HC is a figment of literature, but not bein ng eaten alive in 11th Ave. That was very

real, and a reason to hate winter.

Eaten by a brolly

It’s dark and bucketing down as I head for the office. I’m ready for it. All Gore-Tex’ed up, and the SunLive brolly goes up faster than the price of lamb, as I exit the car.

Then I’m attacked and swallowed … by steel ribs and canopy as a brolly spontaneously snaps shut. With me inside. “*#@*!!!*” The glasses fly off into the gloom, car keys sink in the stormwater, and expletives fly as I fight off a man-eating brolly. I was in charge of getting to work dry, until I wasn’t.

More humiliating were the belly laughs from a woman across the road who’d witnessed the spectacle. How cruel her schadenfreude. And of course my wet butt would be the butt of jokes in her office.

“Silly old git got swallowed by his brolly.”

Very funny!

Now, as we sit moping in front of the heat pump in our thermals while daubing anti-itch cream on our chilblains, we can be comforted th hat we’ll be over the hump Sunday. It’s shorrtest day falls this Sunday, June 21.

SAD D Timess

Why does the sun bother rising? Because when it descend ds again after just 9.5 hours of daylight, the SAD, the seasonal affective disorder, overwh helms us again. The low mood, fatigue, lack of energy gy, y hypersomnia

or oversleeping, carb cravings, weight gain, social withdrawal. All primarily linked to reduced sunlight.

But the suffering is very real.

SAD one: “I hate winter. I get sick, sad and irritated by everything. AND, I look like a boy in a beanie”.

SAD two: “I hate keeping lights on all day”.

SAD three: “Winter sports shouldn’t be in winter”.

SAD four: “I can’t function in darkness”.

Cranky

A Kiwi colleague in London said her SAD kicks in soon as the Christmas decorations come down.

“Leave for work in the dark, come home in the dark. It’s relentless and draining. And on rare days there is sun, it doesn’t get high enough to offer warmth or relief.”

Makes her more cranky, tired and lazy than normal.

Sounds more like seasonal ANNOYANCE disorder – annoys rather than depresses.

Because she finds a medicinal Guinness or merlot, or three, in front of an open fire at the Kings Head in Tooting fixes it. And a Vitamin D tablet.

So come Sunday there will only be 163 days, or thereabouts, until summer breaks through the “bleak” on Tuesday, December 1. Just 23 weeks and counting!

BMX club pleads for help to repair track Tauranga BMX Club is racing to secure the final funding needed to repair its damaged track and safeguard the future of BMX competition in the city.

The club needs to raise more than $32,000 to complete urgent remediation work on its Cambridge Rd facility.

Seventeen riders aged 10 to 30 have been preparing for next month’s World Championships in Brisbane, training on a limited scale and travelling to tracks in Cambridge and Rotorua because of the damage.

Cracking and ground movement at the track have prevented competition racing for more than a year.

Club committee member Kim Crawford said the issues became more noticeable after major construction began in the surrounding area.

She believes the problems may be linked to the track being built on a former landfill site.

“We’ve started to have issues with cracking on our track and movement in the corners.”

Closure

About three years ago, the club raised concerns with Tauranga City Council.

At a meeting late last year, the worsening track issues led to its closure for public use and racing.

Crawford said BMX New Zealand and council officials agreed racing could not resume until remediation work was complete.

“We’re only allowed four people on the track at any one time, and we need eight riders to run a race.

“No racing can happen until the remediation is complete.”

Last year, Tauranga BMX relocated a National Qualifying Meeting to Rotorua after the track was deemed unsuitable for competition.

Crawford said the disruption had taken a toll on the club, with membership declining.

Tauranga BMX will host the BMX competition at the 2026 Zespri Aims Games in September, one of the club’s biggest fundraising opportunities and an event, attracting thousands of intermediate-aged competitors.

Club president Amanda Withington said funding secured so far would ensure the track was ready for the Aims Games, but more work was needed to secure the venue’s long-term future.

Hosts

The club has won the rights to host the 2028 BMX New Zealand National Championships and wants the track restored to a standard befitting the event.

“We will have nearly 800 riders coming for nationals in 2028, and we need the track to not only be operational but in the best possible state, so we showcase the sport to the city and vice versa.”

Withington said the club was grateful to funders who had already stepped in, but urgently needed community support to ensure future generations of local riders had the same opportunities.

Tauranga City Council has contributed $30,000 to the project, while TECT has approved $96,017.

work and ensure the track can safely host training and competitions.

The club has launched a Givealittle campaign, which has so far raised $276 toward the target.

Community support

It is also seeking support from local businesses through a trackside sponsorship programme, with advertising opportunities along the fenceline from $150, depending on sign and sponsorship size. Tauranga City Council acting head of spaces and places Ross Hudson said the council had been working closely with the club to explore remedial options.

While the exact cause of the damage could not be confirmed, he said it was most likely due to differential subsidence of landfill material or underground water movement.

Struggle of Sleep After 60 Alison had been struggling with a problem shared by many Kiwis over 60. ”I’ve never been one to sit still,” she laughs.

“There’s always something happening, someone to see.”

If she’s not down at her local pool, Alison can often be seen briskly walking around the park with friends. The 64-year-old has always been active. First to organise a coffee catch-up, last to leave a dinner party, the one who remembers everyone’s birthday.

But lately, Alison was quietly struggling with sleep. Her energy would dip after a poor night, leaving her exhausted, more than she realised.

“When I don’t sleep well, I really notice it,” Alison explains. “Without good sleep, I struggle to keep up with my activities. It starts to impact everything.”

The pool sessions became harder to face.

Walking with friends felt like a chore rather than a joy. She found herself making excuses to stay home.

“I was becoming someone I didn’t recognise,” she admits. “The woman who always said yes was suddenly finding reasons to say no.”

Research confirms Alison’s experience. As we age, our bodies make less melatonin, the hormone that tells us it’s time to sleep. Our sleep becomes lighter and we wake up more often.

We also spend less time in deep sleep, when the brain cleans itself and the body repairs.

This creates three main problems: trouble falling asleep, waking up during the night, and feeling tired in the morning even after hours in bed.

Hudson said the track was a valuable community asset with a proud history of hosting events and developing top riders.

A BMX New Zealand spokeswoman said the organisation had not closed the track but agreed racing should not proceed until the issues were addressed.

Training had continued under club management but race meetings created additional safety concerns, she said.

She said Tauranga BMX remained an important venue within the national network and its selection to host the 2028 BMX New Zealand National Championships reflected that.

“We acknowledge the significance of the venue to the local BMX community and look forward to seeing the track restored to a condition that allows the safe return of competitive racing.”

Nurturing the body and the soul Tucked away in Welcome Bay is a food forest that feeds not just the belly, but a feeling of happiness and hope for the future.

One acre of land is flourishing at the hands of Selena Hardman.

Her self-sown Tauranga Food Forest has more than 370 fruit trees, all growing in symbiosis with a mix of perennials, herbs, flowers and more.

Being led around this remarkable sanctuary that Hardman has been working on for the past four years with partner, Rowen de Vries, you truly get

As we weaved our way through banana palms, overhanging tamarillos, sprawling pineapple sage and fragrant blooms, it felt like we could’ve been on a tropical island.

Skinks skittered at our feet, the chickens cooed contentedly and pachouli perfumed the air.

“This morning I was walking along the top [of the forest] …the light was coming in, and I could just see a bit of mist coming up in the sunlight with the monarchs,” Hardman said.

The happiness Hardman finds in her food forest is amplified by her love of growing rare and unique fruits of vibrant colours and tastes. “I’ve got heaps of dragon fruit. Eventually, I’ll have 10 really rare varieties that I got from someone up north…They’re the thing I love growing the most because it really surprises people that we can grow them here. They’re so fresh, colourful and delicious.”

Another unique plant that Hardman is carefully tending too is the Black Sapote – aka the chocolate pudding fruit. As you can imagine the fruit of this plant has a custardy texture and a mild cocoa, vanilla, caramel flavour. “I cannot wait to try that for the first time!”

“The climate is just really good for growing things, and that’s why I am quite keen to experiment beyond what the standard is because I want to test the limit to see what we can grow here.”

Hardman said she comes from a background of green fingers in Palmerston North with both her grandparents, and parents being keen gardeners. Yet, much of her skill for growing is self-taught and fuelled by her enthusiasm to give things a go. “It’s literally all from just watching YouTube videos,” she said.

“Even if I did a course, they’re not really going to cover how to grow four different types of pineapples or bananas. It’s from

getting stuck in and experimenting. A lot of it comes from trial and error and seeing what you can do in your own climate.”

Hardman said she had learnt a lot about what temperatures plants can thrive in, having lost a couple of plants such as soursops to winter temperatures. “Now I’ll learn it’s going to go in the tropical garden in the tunnel house, or in the greenhouse permanently, or I’m going to wait a bit longer until it’s bigger, and then I’m going to be very selective about where I plant it…there’s a lot more learning and thoughtfulness that goes into it.”

Seeing the forest grow has been a “real team effort” with her partner too. “[Rowen’s] done a really good job.” “He does the more structural stuff like the stairs and pathways. Without him doing that it wouldn’t be the same.”

Feed a feeling

The food forest is so much more than a fruit and vege garden on steroids, Hardman said. Working three days a week as a radiation therapist and having done so for the past 20 years, the food forest is her perfect place to slow down.

“It’s not just functional to feed you. It’s about how you feel being out there. Do you want to be out there? Are you loving it? Are you looking at all the flowers and the wildlife that the flowers bring in?…If you’re getting more bees and butterflies, you’re getting more pollinators to pollinate your flowers, so it all works together,” she said.

Hardman also enjoyed reducing waste by growing her own food.

“With our perennial plants like the spinach…you don’t have to go and get lettuce in a plastic bag from the supermarket. “Between us we’ve got four kids and I like to show [them] that you can grow your own, and let them

experiment, trying all different types of food and expose them to different types of nutrition, and give them the confidence to try different things.”

This spring Hardman will take small tour groups around her food forest to give people the opportunity to experience it for themselves.

Tauranga-born Army offficer complletes mission A Tauranga-born New Zealand Army officer has completed a sixmonth deployment at one of the world’s most heavily guarded borders.

Captain Steen Hemmingsen, who grew up in Tauranga and attended Ōtūmoetai College, was stationed in the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea as part of Operation Monitor, a release from the New Zealand Defence Force said.

Operation Monitor is New Zealand’s commitment since 2001 to the United Nations Command (UNC) and the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission (UNCMAC) in Korea.

Under the United Nations banner, 22 nations, including New Zealand, contributed either combat forces or medical units to support South Korea during the Korean War. UNCMAC was established in 1953 as a condition of an armistice agreement between the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Hemmingsen served as an assistant joint duty officer, with responsibility for assisting communication with North Korea – considered the mission’s highest priority.

“Our office controls the ‘pink phone’, which is the only overt line of communication to North Korea from United Nations Command. “I was involved in drafting message content and overseeing the passing and reporting of the message.”

His other priorities were coordinating and controlling access to the Joint Security Area (JSA), and providing briefings and

orientation about the JSA to those who need them.

These included local unit soldiers, ministers of foreign national governments, ambassadors, distinguished visitors and three-star generals.

“The role has seen me interact with people I would have never imagined being in the same room as,” he said.

The deployment placed him within sight of armed North Korean guards, although he was not permitted to carry a weapon under the terms of the armistice agreement.

“Our best safety measure is routine and normality in activity. Predictable actions create predictable reactions,” he said.

Since joining the New Zealand Army in 2017, Hemmingsen has pursued a career combining academic, physical and leadership challenges, including studying mechanical engineering.

“I wanted a career with diverse challenges. I was also drawn to national service to be part of a higher purpose,” he said.

“It’s been enlightening learning about New Zealand’s previous and ongoing commitments to the ‘forgotten war’ of the Korean War and the ongoing armistice.”

Glamour for a good cause at firefighters ball Dust off the tuxedos, slip into your finest gown and prepare for a night of glamour, entertainment and community spirit.

The Pāpāmoa Volunteer Fire Brigade is inviting the community to step into an evening of elegance and support a vital fundraising project at its inaugural Firefighter Fundraising Ball on July 4.

The black-tie event will be held at the Pāpāmoa Surf Lifesaving Club from 6.30pm and promises fine dining and live entertainment while raising funds for a new all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and storage shed.

Brigade member and event organiser Chuck Kroeker said the ball is the first of its kind for Pāpāmoa and he would like to see it become a much-loved annual fixture.

“We’re hoping it’s the start of a long and lengthy tradition – a midwinter excuse to dress up and come together as a community.”

While Kroeker said firefighter balls have never been held in Pāpāmoa before, the concept has a long history overseas.

Wisconsin 1860

Originally from Canada, he said firefighter balls had been part of emergency services culture in North America and Europe for generations, providing an opportunity for firefighters to connect with their communities while raising funds for projects.

He said records show firefighter balls were being held in Wisconsin as early as 1860, while a separate tradition emerged in France in 1937.

“It’s pretty entrenched in the culture around emergency services,” Kroeker said.

The funds raised this year will support the brigade’s ATV and shed project, which will improve emergency response capabilities in areas that are difficult for fire trucks to access.

Kroeker said the ATV will be similar to the side-by-side vehicles commonly used by farmers and surf lifesaving clubs.

Equipped to carry emergency gear and patients, it will allow firefighters to reach incidents on beaches, sand dunes, rural properties and tracks in the Pāpāmoa Hills.

Ideal, invaluable

“It will be ideal for medical responses in those difficult areas,” Kroeker said. “We can transport equipment, carry a stretcher and get people out from way down the beach or remote areas where a fire truck simply can’t go.”

The vehicle would also prove invaluable for vegetation fires, storm events and landslips.

The brigade also wants to raise funds for a purpose-built storage shed for the ATV. “When you purchase an ATV, you also need somewhere to store it and a way to transport it. Our current storage facilities are not fit for purpose, so a new shed is part of the overall project.”

The firefighters’ ball would also offer an opportunity for residents to learn more about the people behind the local brigade.

Kroeker said many are surprised to discover that his brigade is staffed by volunteers who leave their workplaces and families to respond to emergencies.

250-plus per year

“The brigade attends between 250 and 280 callouts each year, responding to everything from medical emergencies and motor vehicle crashes to severe weather events and fires,” Kroeker said.

“A lot of the community doesn’t realise that when they call 111, the firefighters turning up are volunteers. This is a chance for us to engage with the community in a positive way.”

Team of 24

The brigade has 24 volunteer firefighters and is continually recuriting and training new members.

Guests attending the ball will receive a three-course dinner, live entertainment

and opportunities to meet local firefighters who will be attending in full dress uniform. There will be prize draws and other surprises throughout the evening.

“We’re going big for the first one,” Kroeker said. “We want this to become that event on the calendar that people look forward to every year.”

Tickets are $200 per person, with tables of eight available. “When the call goes out, we’re there to support the community, Kroeker said. “This is an opportunity for the community to support us in return.”

From decline to growth, Tauranga yacht From near-empty boat ramps during Covid to becoming one of the country’s fastest-growing junior sailing hubs, Tauranga Yacht & Power Boat Club is enjoying one of the most encouraging periods in its history.

“Post-Covid, the club almost died in terms of junior sailing,” Burfoot said. “We were down to just a handful of young sailors. Everyone’s worked incredibly hard since then, and now we’re seeing the results.”

The club’s revival has been driven by a strong focus on youth sailing, family involvement and grassroots participation, with more than 800 school children experiencing sailing through the national RŪNĀ programme this season.

This season 824 children aged from eight to 13 came through the Tauranga club for a sailing experience – which was more than double the previous year’s numbers.

“We’re now one of the top clubs in the country for delivering RŪNĀ,” Burfoot said.

The programme had become the foundation of a broader rebuilding effort, he said.

The growth of the club’s Green Fleet had been rapid, Burfoot said.

At the end of last season, Tauranga had four sailors in Green Fleet. This season the club finished the season with 16 young sailors progressing through the programme – and many continuing to race through winter.

Girls

Even more encouraging for organisers was the number of girls becoming involved.

“The majority are girls,” Burfoot said.

“We’ve got fantastic female participation

coming through.”

Club manager Jo West said the atmosphere around the club had changed dramatically.

“There’s a real energy around the place now,” West said. “Families are engaged, kids are excited, and people can see the programme is working.”

The club’s success was already showing on the national stage, West said.

Tauranga sailors recently recorded some of its club’s strongest performances in years at the national Optimist championships, with sailors claiming top placings and age-group titles.

“Part of the club’s recent success has been driven by our coaches, Lorenzo from Argentina and Noah who has come up through our sailing program,” Burfoot said.

“They’ve spent the past two years helping develop Tauranga’s youth programme. They’ve been a huge influence and really helped lift the whole programme.”

Bay of Plentyy New Zealand’ss top-rranked economy Bay of Plenty has emerged as the country’s top-performing region on the ASB’s latest Regional Economic Scoreboard, driven by strong exports and job growth – but business leaders warn global uncertainty could temper momentum through the rest of 2026.

The scoreboard ranked Bay of Plenty first for the three months to March, ending Canterbury’s run at the top.

The region’s performance was underpinned by strong employment growth, solid construction demand, retail spending and a resilient housing market, with ASB pointing to the strength of the primary sector and exports.

Dave Courtney, chief executive of Western Bay of Plenty economic development organisation Priority One, said the result reflected what local businesses were seeing on the ground, even if growth was below historic levels.

“This result is consistent with what we’re hearing from our members and businesses across the Western Bay of Plenty.

“Growth is not at the levels we’ve seen historically, but the region continues to outperform many parts of the country due to the strength of our key industries, the resilience of local businesses, and continued confidence in the Western Bay as a place to invest, work and live.”

“Our export-facing sector, particularly kiwifruit and the port and associated logistics providers, is a key driver of the economy.”

He said ongoing investment linked to strong population growth forecasts was also supporting construction and infrastructure activity.

Courtney said while job growth had slowed alongside the national economy, the long-term outlook remained positive, supported by the region’s export base and the Western Bay of Plenty regional deal.

Despite the strong headline result, economists and business leaders say risks are building.

ASB warned “storm clouds are looming”, with inflation pressures and global uncertainty – including the ongoing impacts of conflict in the Middle East – expected to weigh on growth and confidence.

“There is no doubt the second half

of 2026 will be a continuation of the economic challenges that have gained momentum since the Middle East conflict began in February,” Courtney said.

“Rising costs, disrupted supply chains, falling consumer and business confidence – we know businesses are aware of, and planning for, these factors.”

In a media release, ASB chief economist Nick Tuffley said a bumper kiwifruit season and solid employment gains had helped the Bay of Plenty reclaim the top spot.

“Strong export demand and solid employment growth are underpinning the region’s momentum,” Tuffley said.

Business

However, business sentiment on the ground is more mixed.

Tauranga Business Chamber chief executive Matt Cowley said that although the horticulture sector remained a bright spot, rising costs were weighing on

confidence.

“The strong horticulture export season, particularly kiwifruit, is a great news story for all of New Zealand.

“Overall, it’s a mixed bag in recent months as rising fuel prices have put pressure on business and consumer confidence.”

Cowley said publicly funded construction projects and a return in population growth were helping to support business pipelines, particularly in the building sector.

But he warned many businesses were still under pressure.

“Even if revenue is steady for some businesses, the rapid rise in costs has put pressure on cash flow and profits,” he said.

Labour market conditions were also evolving, with Cowley saying some roles had become easier to fill but challenges remained around reliability and workforce readiness.

“The key challenge is finding work-ready staff who can consistently turn up.”

Rotorua Business Chamber chief executive Melanie Short said the ASB data may not yet reflect the full impact of global tensions.

“My view is that the ASB data timeframe is prior to the Middle East conflict so the picture is skewed.

“Our data is also mid-conflict, so the next round will be the true picture. We were certainly feeling positive at the end of 2025 and start of 2026 and hope to return to that level of confidence in the coming months.”

Peer supportt workers join ED team People seeking help at Tauranga Hospital’s Emergency Department now have access to a new kind of support – one built on lived experience, empathy and connection.

Peer support workers have been introduced into the ED, working alongside clinical staff to support patients experiencing mental health distress during what can be a highly vulnerable time, a media release said this week.

The initiative follows similar services already operating in hospitals across New Zealand, including Waikato, Middlemore and Auckland City.

For many arriving in crisis, the emergency department can feel overwhelming, but peer support workers offer something different – time, understanding and a chance to be genuinely heard.

Rather than focusing on clinical assessment, they sit alongside patients, listen to their experiences and provide reassurance in what is often a fastpaced and high-pressure environment.

Nico Thomasen claimed the coveted 1NZ title at the New Zealand Sprint Karting Nationals that took place in Rotorua.

Competing against a field of 33 of the country’s best young drivers, Nico delivered a commanding performance to secure the Vortex Mini Rok national crown.

He qualified second before going on an unbeaten run through rough the event event.

Thomasen won every heat race, the pre-finaal and the final, crossing thee line more than 11 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

No stranger to a national title, this one is the latest milestone in what has already been a remarkable year for the young racer.

Earlier this season, Thomasen claimed back-to-back New Zealand Grand Prix titles and has continued to test himself against top competition on both sides of the Tasman as he competes in New Zealand and Australia.

Global racing

He said racing overseas, specifically in Australia, was a valuable learning experience.

“There are a lot more people, and the battling is crazy over there, there are 10 kids all going at the same speed, and they can all win it.”

At just 11 years old, Thomasen has etched his name alongside some of New Zealand motorsport’s biggest stars.

He won the 2025 New Zealand Top Half Series, a championship previously won by Formula One driver Liam Lawson in 2014, before Nico was even born.

Thomasen said Liam Lawson is one of his motorsport heroes, along with fellow Kiwis Shane van Gisbergen and Ryan Wood.

He said winning the same trophy as Lawson made him feel “fast”.

“They’re all fierce drivers, are good at battling and maintaining tyres.”

With dreams of one day forging a professional career in Supercars, those closest to Thomasen say the success has been built on countless hours of preparation, long road trips, and family sacrifice.

Early success

Thomasen’s mum, Shannon Thomasen, said he started racing aged 6 and his success at such a young age was “impressive and pretty admirable”.

“He’s worked hard to get to where he is, and to consistently win, he’s now got a few championships under his belt.”

She said Nico was well respected in the racing pits with other young drivers starting out.

“He’s a very determined little person and it certainly comes out on the track.”

When asked what his advice would be to other aspiring Kiwi kart drivers, Thomasen’s answer was simple.

“Believe in yourself and always believe that you can become something big one day, keep practising and keep putting in Kaitlyn Morrell effort.”

Tauranga charity welcomes new chief A new chapter has begun for Tauranga charity Under the Stars, with a new general manager stepping into the role as the organisation continues supporting people experiencing hardship.

Chris Emmett joined Under the Stars at the end of April and brings more than a decade of experience in the not-for-profit sector.

“I’m really community driven, and uplifting the community is part of my psyche,” Emmett said.

His background includes a 14-year tenure with Surf Lifesaving New Zealand in a national role.

“What I do is help small to medium not-for-profits strategically position themselves and that’s where I’m moving into with this role.”

Having grown up in Tauranga and returning to raise a family, Emmett said the move was both a professional and a deeply personal matter, driven by a desire to “give back”.

“That’s going to be my mantra moving forward, to keep uplifting the community which is really close to my heart.”

Emmett said he was drawn to Under the Stars for its grassroots, agile approach to addressing homelessness and food insecurity.

“If I’m being honest, it’s an area where I haven’t had a lot of experience in but it’s an area where the work is really fulfilling and rewarding.”

The Tauranga-based charitable organisation supports people experiencing

homelessness and hardship.

Throughout the year, Under the Stars distributes thousands of meals, donated clothing, bedding and other essentials directly to people accessing its services.

“I think Under the Stars is a great little charity that’s been slowly but steadily creating a nice foundation for the Tauranga community,” Emmett said.

Moving forward, he believes the organisation is part of a “wider solution” to homelessness.

“A one-stop solution doesn’t fit everyone, it’s about finding the right solution for a person and their situation, which can be really complex.

“And that’s the thing which makes it really challenging, there needs to be a whole range of different services for different needs across each individual.”

Under The Stars works alongside other community agencies to connect people with housing, health and social support where needed.

“There are a lot of vulnerable people out there, which really stood out, they just need a hand in a non-judgmental, compassionate way,” Emmett said.

In his first month, he spent time working alongside volunteers and staff in meal services to better understand the realities of the work on the ground.

He said those services gave him a “really good” understanding of the issues and challenges in the Tauranga community.

“Now it’s about helping Under The Stars strategically position itself to completely support the community.”

about 2500 meals per month, which is typically done over 88 meal services coming from a monthly bulk cook.

Emmett said the team worked in a compassionate and judgment-free environment where people would feel welcomed.

“The volunteers are here to ensure that people experiencing hardship can access kai support and meaningful connections,” he said.

“The approach is to always welcome people with open arms to come have a meal and hopefully that small gesture improves their situation.”

Looking ahead, Emmett said his priorities for Under The Stars were operational sustainability and resilience into the future.

The organisation is currently navigating challenges with the Cliff Rd facility it operates out of, which was “getting old”.

“It’s important we get a consolidated strategy to start seeing some differences, problems in the community are only going to get worse and we’re a critical part of preventing that,” Emmett said.

“We’re making a big difference in our community and we’ve got to be moving in one direction.”

Volunteers feed families in need For families facing illness, financial hardship, grief or the demands of caring for young children, something as simple as a ready-made meal can make a world of difference.

That’s the philosophy behind Bellyful Tauranga, a volunteer-run organisation providing home-cooked meals to families with children under 12.

Each month, volunteers gather at a local commercial kitchen to prepare family-sized meals, which are delivered to households across the Bay of Plenty.

“Having a warm meal is one less thing for families to worry about, it’s a way for communities to show families they’re not alone when life suddenly becomes overwhelming,” Bellyful’s Tauranga branch co-coordinator Sarah Elliott said.

As the service continues to support hundreds of households, Bellyful Tauranga is encouraging more people to consider joining its volunteer network.

Volunteers

While not facing a volunteer shortage, Elliott said new volunteers are always welcome to help meet ongoing demand and keep meals available for families who need them.

She said the organisation was “lucky” in the sense that they found it quite easy to attract and keep volunteers once they came aboard because they simply had fun.

When speaking with Super Support Social worker Melissa Laurent, she had just finished cleaning up after a highly successful afternoon tea for older residents. The event offered a valuable opportunity for attendees to socialise, share laughter, and enjoy a homemade meal in a welcoming environment.

“Such gatherings play a vital role in reducing social isolation and fostering community connections,” Laurent said.

Super Support exists to provide support to people over 65, whose initial needs are related to food insecurity and financial hardship.

Government boosts aged care funding The Government has announced a $79 million funding increase for aged residential care services, aimed at easing pressure on hospitals and improving access for older New Zealanders.

Health Minister Simeon Brown said the 4% boost would help reduce delays in discharging patients into appropriate care, freeing up hospital beds for those needing urgent treatment. As part of the package, aged care providers will be expected to accept hospital admissions over weekends to speed up transfers.

The funding includes a 2.66% base increase, alongside targeted investment

to improve service delivery and access.

Brown said the boost would support providers to meet rising demand from an ageing population.

Associate Health Minister Casey Costello said wider reform of the aged care system was underway, with advice from the Aged Care Ministerial Advisory Group expected soon.

The Aged Care Association has welcomed the announcement, saying it recognises the sector’s critical role in the health system. Chief executive Tracey Martin said residential care providers, already around 95% full, could help relieve hospital pressure but warned more beds are needed to meet future demand.

Crafting community ty wellbeingg What began as a small gathering of four people in a corner of Greerton Library has grown into a thriving community of 35 members who come together weekly to knit, crochet, embroider, cross stitch and connect.

The Knit & Knatter Group meets on Tuesdays 12.30pm to 2pm in Greerton Library’s meeting room, bringing together people of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels.

Facilitator and Tauranga Friends of the Library secretary Barbara Morgan said the group offers much more than crafting.

“It is a social gathering for learners, intermediate and advanced knitters crocheters, cross stitchers and embroiderers.

Everyone is welcome,” Morgan said.

“We are all quite different, from many backgrounds.

Members enjoy learning, making scarves, blankets, hats, babywear, soft toys, knitting, crocheting and tapestry. Many tourists from Asia, America and Europe visit our group to enjoy learning how to knit and to socialise with the locals.”

Tauranga City Council community programmes team lead Elle Reid said the group was established as a Tauranga Libraries initiative in March 2019.

The projects

“It started off as a library initiative, but quickly became popular, which led to the community leading the group shortly after,” Reid said.

“It struggled initially after Covid, but gradually people came back to connect, chat and knit together.

“The first session was March 19, 2019, with four people present who met in a small corner of the library. As the group expanded, we moved into the meeting room.”

Since then, members have used their skills to support local and international causes.

Projects include blankets for Women’s Refuge and All 4 Love TGA, garments for children in Africa, hats for seafarers arriving at Port of Tauranga, puppy jerseys for the SPCA and contributions to Operation Cover Up, which provides warm clothing and blankets for people in war-torn countries.

I didn’t know what to do with myself, so I joined the group,” Anne McNiece said. “Seafarers hats are knitted for cargo ships that enter Mount Maunganui Port. This project was started by a beautiful lady named Margaret Wilson, who sadly passed away last month.

“Fish n Chip Jumpers & Singlets are made for children in Africa. Little Father Christmases for Christmas parcels that are put together for low-income families.”

Group member Jenny Griffin recalled a generous donation of wool being given to the library.

“The project started where a lovely lady gave wool to the library, so we started knitting blankets – 40 stitches, 130cm or 52-inch squares. All the squares are sewn together to create a blanket. All blankets are then shared with Women’s Refuge and All 4 Love TGA for families facing hardship.”

‘Happy place’

For member Elaine Watson, helping others was one of the group’s greatest rewards. “It’s our happy place, sharing, caring, learning and creating. I knit for people in war torn countries.”

For Jean Sydenham, the group offered companionship and a chance to contribute.

Four days exploring Taranaki

Wild and desolate Ohawe beach.

The significance of the stars aligning like this is I got to walk around the cliffs at low tide to Elephant Rock and the Three Sisters, one of New Zealand’s most iconic spots. It was completely idyllic as the sun set behind these incredible rock formations and even the maunga was on display again in the distance. It’s an absolute must-do.

The last night was spent at the freedom camp at Lake Whakamaru, another gem of a spot for some peace, relaxation, and swimming, amidst breathtaking scenery.

Summer 2022 was the first time I’d visited Taranaki, and now I just want to go back and explore more.

Travelling from Hamilton in a motorhome, we took State Highway 3 all the way south to New Plymouth and the drive down to Mokau was through beautiful scenery with that West Coast jewel-coloured sea.

I also got my first glimpses of the great maunga itself, Mount Taranaki.

Stunning sunset

We took State Highway 45 to Cape Egmont which has camping at the boat club for NZ Motorhome and Caravan Association (NZMCA) members. The evening delivered a stunning sunset, and the area has nice walks along the coast road and a lighthouse to explore.

The next day we continued, cutting back inland at Hawera and up p State Highway 3 to Stratford. The maunga had disappeared and the weather was grey but if any signs caught our eye, we

took our time and stopped.

That’s how we found Ohawe, the epitome of a wild, west coast beach, and enjoyed walking the dog on the windswept beach. We checked out the Ohawe NZ Wars Memorial.

Taranaki Pioneer Village

The signage lured us into the Taranaki Pioneer Village in Stratford, and it was a real treasure with beautiful old buildings set up as life-like museums.

A quick stop at Lake Mangamahoe for lunch added another place to our “next visit list”, the walking and bike tracks around this huge scenic lake look amazing.

After a night at a NZMCA property we headed north, up towards Awakino, and I was happy that I’d seen Mount Taranaki from all sides by then!

The next stop turned out to be the icing on the cake. We just happened to pull into Tonggap pōrutu freedom camp pingg ground and secure a waterfront spot on a hot sunny day when absolute low tide was about 10 minutes before sundown.

Be prepared ahead of illness surge As winter sets in, Hato Hone St John is encouraging New Zealanders to keep on top of their health and seek the right help early, as the emergency ambulance service prepares for the seasonal increase in winter illness.

Last year, the organisation experienced its busiest winter on record, with ambulance crews responding to more than 50,000 incidents in August – the highest number recorded in a single month.

In the same month, incidents involving breathing difficulties were 33% higher than the 12-month average.

“The winter months consistently drive up demand for ambulance services, as colder weather, higher rates of influenza and respiratory illness place additional pressure on the health system,” St John deputy chief executive, clinical services Jon Moores said.

“We are well prepared to manage the

seasonal increase in demand, but there are some important steps people can take to protect themselves, their whānau and the wider community.

“This includes staying home if you are sick, particularly to avoid spreading colds, flu and other viruses to people who may be more vulnerable. Wearing a face mask in crowded indoor spaces, coughing or sneezing into your elbow, disposing of used tissues straight away, and washing and drying your hands thoroughly can all help reduce the spread of illness.”

Moores said St John continued to strengthen initiatives that help ease pressure on emergency departments while ensuring patients receive safe, appropriate and timely care.

“When it is clinically safe to do so, some patients may receive advice and care from a clinician over the phone without an ambulance being sent or a trip to the hospital emergency department.”

Bowel cancer signs still missed by many Kiwis New research shows many New Zealanders cannot name key bowel cancer symptoms, with experts urging earlier recognition and action to save lives.

As Bowel Cancer Awareness Month gets underway, Bowel Cancer New Zealand is urging people to learn the symptoms, recognise when something isn’t right, and seek help early.

Research from the organisation shows one in four New Zealanders cannot name a single symptom of bowel cancer without prompting, while fewer than a quarter feel well informed about symptoms, risk factors and prevention.

The findings also reveal gaps in awareness among younger people and communities disproportionately affected by the disease.

Bowel Cancer New Zealand chief executive Peter Huskinson said the results highlight why improving symptom awareness remains critical.

“Bowel cancer is one of the most treatable cancers when found early, with around 90% of cases curable,” he said.

“But far too many New Zealanders still don’t know what symptoms to look for or assume they’re too young to be at risk.

“The most dangerous myth about bowel cancer is that you’re too young to get it.”

While blood in the stool is widely recognised as a symptom, awareness of other warning signs remains low.

Only a quarter of respondents identified abdominal pain as a symptom, while fewer than one in five mentioned a persistent change in bowel habits - one of the most common signs reported by people diagnosed with the disease.

Awareness of symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, fatigue and bloating was lower.

Bowel Cancer New Zealand medical advisor Dr Frank Frizelle said many symptoms are easy to dismiss or attribute to less serious conditions.

“Persistent changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, unexplained fatigue or weight loss should not be ignored,” he said.

“Recognising symptoms early and seeking medical assessment promptly can mean the difference between detecting a highly curable cancer and facing far more intensive treatment for advanced disease.”

The research also highlights barriers preventing people from seeking advice.

More than one in five respondents said GP costs could stop them getting checked, while uncertainty about symptoms and embarrassment discussing bowel issues were also factors.

Tauranga soprano comes home for special performance Tauranga-born opera singer Anna Mahon is returning home in July for a special performance in support of the local branch of the Registered Music Teachers.

Mahon will perform at Wesley Church on 13th Ave at 2pm on Sunday, July 19, accompanied by pianist Francis Cowan. Following the concert she will conduct a masterclass at 3.30pm with four students which will be open to the public to attend.

Now based in Switzerland, the soprano has built an international opera career while maintaining strong ties to her hometown and the Bay of Plenty music community.

Mahon was born and raised in Tauranga, growing up in Welcome Bay and discovered her love of performance at an early age through school productions at Selwyn Ridge Primary School.

“I’d figured out pretty early that I had a musical gift and was very comfortable on stage – it was where I felt like the most expansive, most confident, most invigorated version of myself,” she said.

After attending Tauranga Girls’ College, where music teacher Stephanie

Geor encouraged her to pursue singing Gallen. Tauranga Coastguard volunteer Todd Wakerley and daughter Jemma are already halfway through their formidable midwinter challenge, braving the cold water to raise vital funds for a cause close to their hearts.

The father-and-daughter duo will participate in The Big Swim, a nationwide Coastguard fundraising initiative that supports the organisation’s essential search and rescue operations. Both have set an ambitious target of swimming fifteen kilometres throughout June.

Jemma’s participation is particularly inspiring. Living with Cystic Fibrosis, she is demonstrating remarkable determination and resilience in committing to such a demanding physical challenge. Her efforts highlight not only her personal courage but also the inclusive and communityfocused spirit of the Coastguard network.

Todd says the initiative is about more than just completing the distance.

“Last year, more than $600,000 was raised nationwide, and we’re hoping the community will once again get behind this fundraiser and support the volunteers it assists,” he says.

The Coastguard relies heavily on volunteer crews and public donations to continue its lifesaving work across New Zealand waters.

Putting on a show A musician wins Lotto.

Everyone asks what they’ll do with the money?

“Keep playing with the band till it runs out.”

Creative people want to create, performers want to perform. Almost no one I know is in it for the money. Not in Tauranga. At best – and this is not at all a bad thing – Tauranga is a training ground, an off-Broadway try-out.

What musicians can do here is spread the word, hone their act, get in shape for the big gigs. Have a little fun. Two concerts suggest the Historic Village’s Jam Factory is the perfect place for all these things.

Punk bash

There was a punk bash last weekend, Stunt Clown with Cat Face and new band, Brain Squash.

Everyone’s currently waiting for Stunt Clown’s new album and Brain Squash’s debut was suitably raucous. And relatively new punk outfit Cat Face caught my interest, containing as it does various legends of Tauranga’s alternative scene Two brothers up front play guitar, Michael and John Baxter, both once members of trailblazers Liberated Squid. Michael was also mainman in The Knids, Billy Two and more while John was recently a Metrognome along with Nigel Gregory, the eccentric on keys and a wiz with words having scooped the 2024 Wham Bam Poetry Slam.

More importantly, what did Cat Face sound like? This is what impresses me. I don’t have to tell you. You can watch their half-hour set on YouTube. The band – or more accurately Julian Henry from Seaside Sound, rehearsal studio and gear place – filmed and recorded the show, just one simple camera at the back of the room.

It’s not bad: the picture is blurred but the obvious volume surprisingly hasn’t overloaded everything. It was up for the world to see within a couple of days; that’s maximising the impact of a venue which only holds 50.

Or why not do a free show there?

That’s what Citizen Audrey is doing on June 27. Citizen Audrey is the artistic moniker of Te Puke multidisciplinary artist Sarah Clumont, who has won awards for her short

filmmaking, and gained quite the international following on TikTok and Spotify.

This is like a homecoming for the singer who is presenting this and all concerts for the rest of the year free as she prepares a live show to take to Australia in 2027, then Europe.

Her songs are epic productions, modern, vaguely in Lana Del Ray territory, with darkness often hovering lyrically and a chameleon approach to genre. There’s even a nod to death metal in her song Anhedonia. The songs in Tauranga will be more stripped-back, with accompaniment from guitarist Daniel Beeler and keyboard player/ producer Sharn Whiltshire. Support comes from local rapper YdoubleR and, as of writing, there are still free tickets available.

Ducks to race on Ōmokoroa peninsula The Ōmokoroa Boat Club’s annual Duck, Rowing and Paddling Races will be afloat on the peninsula on June 21.

The event is a fundraiser for Ōmokoroa Point School.

Ducks are for sale at Ōmokoroa Point School’s office for $5 each. Each entrant receives a number linked to a duck in the race.

Those interested can register for rowing, paddleboard and kayak races on the day. There will be male, female and junior divisions, depending on entrant numbers and the availability of craft. The briefing will start at 10am. Find out more on the Ōmokoroa Boat Club Facebook page.
