Hillside hobby
Part workshop, part retreat, part invention lab is a cave built into an underground space carved deep into the earth. It began when Carmichael was doing a small development on the hillside. “The digger was already on-site and I thought,
‘well… now’s a good time – dig me a bloody big hole in this hill’,” he said. “It’s basically like an old silage pit, but turned inside out. We just kept building from there.” Carmichael said the project was “just a
hobby”. “But it’s one I’ve had a lot of fun with.” It is clear this is one hobby that got very, very out of hand – in the best possible way! Turn to pages 24-25 to find out what’s inside... Photo / Kelly O’Hara

It’s amazing what is hidden up State Highway 2’s side roads in the Western Bay of Plenty. This week The Weekend Sun has stumbled upon something quite unique. High in the hills of Te Puna is farmer John Carmichael’s idea of a creative escape.
