You may wonder why two women feature on the cover of The Weekend Sun to inform readers that three people from Tauranga are this week in France for the 2026 Men’s Roller Derby World Cup. Well, turns out that men’s roller

derby competitions don’t have gender restrictions.

So NZ women’s roller derby representative Jasmine Cooper, pictured on left – known on track as Monsterella – will help coach the NZ men’s team, called

Kiwi Toa. Meanwhile, Mount Maunganui husband and wife Ray and Veronica Diamond – known on the track as X-Ray and Diamond – will both compete in the men’s team in Orléans from April 30-May 3. Furthermore,

Veronica is Kiwi Toa’s head coach.

Of Arctic rodents and craziness Down Cameron Rd like a bolt out of the blue. The black actually.

It was 5.30am.

A guy, well a scooter or scooterist on an e-scooter, scooting through the drear. Like he was late for his own funeral.

Because he sailed, well scootered – or is it scooted? – straight through a red light at the 9th Ave intersection. A ‘life stood still’ moment while I processed all that could have gone gorily, gruesomely, fatally wrong. Where are my statins?

An early morning jogger stopped midstride. “Idiot!” he said. I like people who encapsulate their thoughts – makes things digestible and easily understood.

So dark, wet, no helmet, and busting red lights. Go figure. No helmet – why not?

“Doin’ 50!” encapsulated the jogger again. Because that scooter was humming, whining. “Don’t wish him bad,” said jogger. “But he’s not long with us.

Lemming!”

Lemming? Urban myth I explained to jogger.

“Pardon?” said jogger.

That was a couple of weeks ago and I haven’t seen the scooterer, scooter, since.

I’m starting to think the worst. But we are noticing a lot of kamikaze scooter behaviour.

‘Bloody business’

I stopped at the traffic lights outside that Chapel St shopping precinct, and opened the window to politely suggest to an e-scooter rider that perhaps – no, definitely – should wear a helmet. “I lot of things could easily go very wrong,” I said caringly.

He told me to “mind my bloody business”. Charming.

I suggested it became my “bloody business” when he suddenly required 24-hour care for a life-altering traumatic brain injury, because I would be paying for his keep.

I remember a dentist telling me to only brush the teeth I want to keep. Perhaps scooter riders should do a quick check list of all the faculties or intellectual abilities they would like to keep before scooting off without a helmet.

All those cognitive or mental processes involving learning and comprehension, thinking, knowing, remembering, judging and problem solving. What about communicating – do you really want to fumble for the right words, or any words?

A few things to ponder while you can.

Before you fall off your scooter.

Icky stuff

And, heaven forbid, if it was me who accidently knocked you off your scooter, I wouldn’t want your seriously compromised lifestyle on my conscience.

I also wouldn’t want to commit my Sunday afternoons to visiting someone who’s needlessly doolally and owns a bent and busted e-scooter.

Scooter told me to ‘eff’ off, and took off. Without a helmet.

As a driver, scooters scare me. I get near an e-scooter and I think of icky

stuff, soft tissue injuries, the shredding of flesh. I see compound fractures.

At least those can mend, but head trauma? Seems to be a finality about head trauma. I always think scooters are dreadfully exposed, vulnerable. Small wheels, sensitive balance and steering, what does it take to tip a scooter over.

And a rider off. Probably not much.

Another incident recently on Vale St – a smooth, cocksure young dude is riding his scooter towards town, in the cycle lane and against the traffic flow.

Good choices friend.

Again, no helmet, he’s on his mobile phone and steering with one hand.

What can possibly go wrong? I kept listening out for a siren – an ambulance or a fire engine, or both.

Or a hearse.

Love on the tundra

Another peak-hour scooter, a person scooting on a scooter, is looking around for cars that might threaten – from behind, from the side. Good on him.

He’s nervous, feeling exposed.

But while looking out for cars, he’s not looking where he’s going. And should he be without a helmet? Probably not.

Definitely not.

What’s the safest number of people on an e-scooter? Even doubling up is dangerous. E-scooters are specifically engineered for one. Two people compromise stability, braking efficiency and control. So the three helmet-less teenage females, on one e-scooter on Marine Parade last weekend were not playing the odds, not playing smart.

We start and finish with lemmings.

When populations spike every few years, because there’s nothing but love on the frozen tundra, the rodents migrate en masse to new sustainable feeding grounds.

There’s some collateral damage on the way which is misinterpreted as selfdestruction.

School garden programm me faces funding shortfall School leaders and families across Tauranga are backing a longrunning environmental education programme that is facing an uncertain future due to a funding gap.

People, Plants, Schools (PiPS), which delivers hands-on gardening and sustainability education in Tauranga primary schools, was forced to pause operations after a shortfall of $24,500 left it unable to continue into this school term.

The programme had supported more than 3000 students annually across more than a dozen schools, employing six part-time facilitators who worked directly with tamariki (children) in school gardens.

PiPS manager Clare Rodgers said back in November the PiPS board believed they would have enough funding to get through 2026’s Term 2 if they applied to the Community Grants Funding Round 2 2025/2026, which is administered by Tauranga City Council.

Funding round postponed

However, this funding round was postponed for four weeks from March 1 to April 1 due to the council’s response to January 22’s fatal storm.

“This [postponement] was because the staff involved in administering the community grants were heavily involved in Tauranga City Council’s response to the January severe weather event, including setting up and administering the Mayoral Relief Fund,” council regulatory and community services

general manager Sarah Omundsen said.

Omundsen acknowledged this was a difficult time financially for a number of Tauranga’s community organisations. “At the same time, there is more demand for many of the services provided by the community sector,” she said.

Not the council’s fault

Rodgers said the fund’s postponement was not the council’s fault “it’s just one of those things”. “Because they pushed it back a month it meant we had no money for Term 2 but now some of the schools are coming back on board.”

Rodgers said the situation also reflected wider pressures facing the charity sector, which she said included community funding avenues dropping off. “We’ve been incredibly grateful for the support we receive from TCC, TECT, BayTrust and NZ Lotteries – they have all backed us and continue to support us,” Rodgers said.

“This is not about a lack of goodwill. It’s about a timing gap in funding. We simply didn’t have enough to get through Term 2.”

Rodgers said the organisation was working with principals and supporters to explore ways to restart the programme, including seeking new sponsors and community backing. “It’s been my baby for nine years,” Rodgers said. “We really want to see it continue – and the response from schools has been amazing.”

At Arataki School, principal Vicki Hiini said PiPS played a vital role in student learning. “What I love about the programme is that it really encourages children to connect with the environment, to learn about self-sufficiency and how food is grown.

She said the programme’s strength lay in its dedicated facilitators, who worked alongside teachers and maintained the school gardens.

“With increasing curriculum demands, we simply don’t have the capacity to deliver something at that level ourselves,” Hiini said.

“It’s a really positive programme that benefits every child, but we couldn’t afford to fund it without external support.”

Kirkby said learning to grow food was a practical life skill, particularly in a challenging economy. “A school is the perfect place to start building that knowledge and connection,” he said. “It’s also great for wellbeing – getting kids outside, working with nature, and away from screens.”

“Gardening is more than just a cute hobby, it’s a pathway to resilience and health,” Kirkby’s wife Jill Parsons said. “It’s literally the way we feed ourselves; it’s crucial.”

Beyond the classroom

Looking for support

Hiini said the programme’s impact goes beyond the classroom, helping build lifelong skills. “We’re preparing children for the future – teaching them skills they’ll carry through life, especially around sustainability.”

Parent and supporter Steve Kirkby said programmes like PiPS were becoming increasingly important. “We’re big advocates for it,” he said. “We’re just really enthusiastic about the importance of connecting our kids to food, where it comes from, and the joy of

Retired, but not slowing down

Liz retired last November. She hates that word.

“It sounds like you’re winding down,” she says.

“I’m not winding down. I’m just doing different things.”

At 71, her weeks are fuller than they were when she was working. Pickleball three times a week. Bachata dancing. Looking after relatives.

Coffee with friends who’ve known her for decades. Her former colleagues joke that she seems busier now than she ever was at work.

“I found it frightening at first,” she admits.

“Not knowing what I was going to do with my time. But now I’ve got more interests than hours.”

The only thing that needed sorting was her sleep.

Liz has always been a night owl. Her husband is asleep by ten, but she’s still up at midnight, and sometimes later. It’s just how she’s wired, and she’s made peace with that.

But as she got older, the sleep she did get wasn’t giving her what she needed. She’d wake during the night and lie there, mind ticking over. The hours she managed felt thin, like they weren’t quite reaching her. She’d get up in the morning feeling like she hadn’t really rested at all.

“I tried other things,” she says. “But I just didn’t like them. You’d feel drowsy the next day and I gave them away.”

That groggy feeling was worse than the tiredness. She wanted something that worked with her body, not something that left her sluggish and foggy.

Then she saw an ad in the newspaper for Koru Sleep. She wasn’t expecting miracles, but she was curious enough to try.

Koru Sleep

“It didn’t work straight away,” Liz says. “But of course, it does take time. You’ve got to give these things a chance.”

She stuck with it, letting her body adjust. After a few weeks, something shifted. She was falling back asleep more easily when she woke during the night. The hours started to feel like actual rest.

Some people expect retirement to mean slowing down. Liz expected more from herself.

She just needed her sleep to keep up.

Access plan underway for Liston Park walkway A solution is in sight for public access through Liston Park in Greerton, after Tauranga City Council reached an agreement with the new owners of the former Tauranga RSA site.

The site at 1237 Cameron Rd, recently purchased by Turners Group NZ Ltd, includes a carpark backing on to the neighbourhood reserve.

For years, local residents have used an informal route linking the adjacent park through to Hayes Ave and Cameron Rd – providing

a convenient connection for families heading to schools, shops and the Greerton village area.

Following the sale of the property that access was closed on April 8 when Turners began construction works, raising concerns among residents who relied on the route.

Councillor Rod Taylor said that families with children walking to school were faced with a potentially longer and less safe route, placing them closer to Cameron Rd traffic.

the cul-de-sac [Hayes Ave], but there’s a small piece of land at the end that is owned by this property [1237 Cameron Rd],” Taylor said.

Now, Tauranga City Council said an agreement had been reached with Turners to provide a formalised connection.

Council’s head of spaces and places Alison Law said both parties were “pleased” to have secured a way forward.

“Tauranga City Council and Turners are pleased to have reached an agreement about ongoing public access to provide a connection through Liston Reserve to Hayes Ave,” Law said.

“This will include the installation of permanent fencing. To formalise the pathway, resource consent is required, and this process is getting under way.”

Law said once resource consent is granted, the council will begin minor works to formalise the pathway and open

it to the public.

“A confirmed timeline is not yet available, as progress will depend on the timeframe for the resource consent approval process.”

Liston Park, a small neighbourhood reserve on Hynds Rd, had become an important local hub for Gate Pā and Greerton residents. A new playground opened there in September 2025, increasing its popularity with families.

While there were two existing walkways linking Hynds Rd and Hayes Ave, and from Hayes Ave through to Cameron Rd near Greerton Hall, barrier bars made access difficult for people with prams or mobility scooters.

Law said the council was also working on a wider plan which would improve access from the end of the Hayes Ave to Cameron Rd walkway past Greerton Hall.

Pāpāmoa rugby team secure special shield Pāpāmoa Rugby ended a long wait for silverware by reclaiming the Sam Siaosi Memorial Shield, defeating Eastern Districts Sports Club 28-20 in a tense Western Bay of Plenty Senior Men’s match on Anzac Day. The win was solidified by an 80th minute runaway try by Pāpāmoa winger AJ Venter, bringing Eastern Districts’ impressive sevenyear hold on the shield to a close.

“It was a tough match with the lead swinging back and forth all game. Last year’s encounter was also a really close contest, which was a big talking point during the week – so it’s special to be able to win it this year,” said Pāpāmoa team manager Jamie Hodge.

“The team is really proud of the determination we showed in honouring Sam and bringing the shield home.”

Plaza expansion to bring new rettaiil opttions A major expansion at Pāpāmoa Plaza is taking shape, with a new large-format retail building set to strengthen the shopping centre’s role as the heart of the growing coastal community.

The development under construction will add about 4000sqm of retail space and house five new tenancies, bringing more national brands to the area.

Centre manager Leah Sutton said the project had been a long time coming.

“This is a new large for-mat retail building at Pāpāmoa Plaza, designed to bring in additional national brands and strengthen the overall offer. As the town centre and heart of Pāpāmoa, it’s important we continue to evolve, and this is a key part of that.”

Construction began last year and was on track for completion in mid-2026, with Sutton noting the visible progress has ramped up quickly in recent months.

“The site has always been earmarked for expansion, and Pāpāmoa’s growth has now reached a point where it makes sense to deliver it.”

The standalone nature of the build had meant there had been no disruption to shoppers or existing businesses, Sutton said.

“This is a large format retail development, focused on national brands. It’s not a dining or mixed-use precinct, but rather an extension that supports convenience, variety, and destination retail.”

Confirmed tenants included Bed Bath & Beyond and Petstock, with other retailers expected to be announced soon.

“We have additional tenancies in advanced stages and close to announcement and one tenancy under negotiation.”

Sutton said the goal had been to attract well-known brands that complement the

centre’s existing offering.

“The focus has been on established national and international retailers that complement the existing mix and bring strong, recognisable brands to the area.”

The expansion was expected to deliver clear benefits for the local community, particularly as Pāpāmoa continued to grow rapidly, Sutton said.

“This development brings more choice to the community, strengthens the local retail offering, and reduces the need for residents to travel outside of Pāpāmoa for key brands.”

More than 100 additional carparks would be added as part of the project, improving accessibility while maintaining the open feel of the centre.

“It’s still very open and accessible. We get comments all the time about how bright and airy the current plaza is. So that’s not changing.”

Sustainability was factored into the design too, Sutton said, with solar panels to be installed on the roof to support the centre’s energy use.

The development was expected to create new jobs once stores open, although final numbers would be determined by individual retailers.

Sutton said the expansion reflects a broader vision for the future of Pāpāmoa Plaza.

“It’s a natural next step. It strengthens the plaza’s position as the town centre and heart of Pāpāmoa and supports the longterm vision of continuing to grow a strong, relevant retail offering for the community.”

Sutton while the development was a significant milestone for the plaza, it may not be the last.

“I would say never say never. There’s still a lot of space there. We’re always just looking at how we can better improve the centre.”

Powerco is upgrading the electricity infrastructure in Hairini to support growing demand.

The project will place new underground cables and switching units, and some overhead lines will be removed to improve safety and power reliability.

Work will take place along Haukore St, through the Welcome Bay roundabout and into parts of Ohauiti Rd and Welcome Bay Rd. Powerco’s electricity general manager Karen Frew said the upgrade, which is expected to be completed by September, is a significant investment in Tauranga’s growing communities.

“This work will strengthen the

network so we can continue to deliver reliable electricity supply and restore power more quickly when outages do occur.”

Powerco contractor, Northpower, will carry out the work, which will involve traffic management along key routes. Some work will take place at night to minimise disruption.

While most work can be completed without interrupting power supply, planned outages may be required.

Affected customers will be notified in advance by their electricity retailer.

Tauranga talent takes centre stage in major musical tour A Tauranga-born performer is stepping into one of musical theatre’s most iconic roles as the hit production Heathers The Musical heads to New Zealand.

Calista Nelmes will don the famous red scrunchie as queen bee Heather Chandler in the Australasian tour of Heathers The Musical, a dark comedy based on the cult 1988 film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.

The production is in Christchurch from May 15-24, Wellington from May 28-June 7, and Auckland from June 10-14, following a successful Australian season.

For Nelmes, landing the role was the result of a competitive, months-long audition process.

“My agent sent me the brief while I was on the train to rehearsal for Rent,” she said. “I love this musical – it’s one of my favourites – and I thought, ‘I think I could get this if I went for it’.”

Pretty special

After submitting singing and acting tapes, Nelmes progressed through multiple callbacks, including in-person auditions with UK creatives, before receiving the lifechanging call while holidaying back home in New Zealand.

“I was at Hot Water Beach with my partner when I found out,” she said. “It was pretty special.”

The role marks another milestone in a growing career that has already seen the 27-year-old perform in major productions including Rent, Jesus Christ Superstar and Jersey Boys across Australia, as well as a season at the Sydney Opera House.

But her journey began much closer to home. Raised in Tauranga, Nelmes attended Bethlehem School, Greenpark School, Tauranga Intermediate, Tauranga Girls’ College and Ōtūmoetai College, where her passion for performing was cemented.

“I genuinely don’t remember a time when I didn’t want to do this,” she said. “I think I came out of the womb singing and dancing.”

Key influence

She credits local vocal coach Scott Braid as a key influence from the age of 10 through to the end of secondary school and fondly recalls performing in community productions around the city, including shows at Baycourt and Tauranga Musical Theatre.

After graduating, Nelmes took a gap year before moving to Sydney to study musical theatre at NIDA, quickly launching into professional work.

Now based in Australia, she said the pace of touring life is intense – with up to eight shows a week -but rewarding.

Rehearsals for Heathers lasted three weeks before the cast went straight into technical rehearsals and opening night.

“It seems crazy, but everyone comes in prepared,” Nelmes said. “You already know your lines – it’s about putting it all together.”

Beyond performing

In Heathers, Nelmes plays the ruthless and commanding Heather Chandler.

“She’s kind of the worst,” Nelmes laughs.

“She’s the queen bee, the evil bully of the school – but she’s also very powerful and intelligent, just a bit misguided.”

While she is thriving on stage, Nelmes

said her ambitions extend beyond performing.

“I want to keep doing this as long as it brings me joy,” she said. “But I’d also love to get into writing and directing - and one day, have a family.”

Though the production won’t make it to Tauranga, Bay of Plenty audiences keen to support one of their own can catch Nelmes on stage when the tour reaches its New Zealand dates this month.

Tauranga teen speaks up for unity Tauranga Girls’ College student Jemma Miri is heading to the national stage after winning the Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty regional final of the Race Unity Speech Awards.

Jemma claimed the regional title on March 24, earning her place among 21 finalists from across the country who will compete at the National Semi-finals in Auckland on May 9, followed by the National Final on May 10.

Winn Shakespeare Festival in March, Miri received a National Shakespeare Schools Production nomination, securing a direct path to the national finals in Wellington later this year.

From there, top students may be selected to perform at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London.

D’Mello said the Race Unity Speech Awards were established to promote conversations around race relations and social cohesion in New Zealand.

The 2026 overall winner will receive the NZ Police National Champion’s Award, and a $2000 prize to be shared by the student and their school.

For Miri, the upcoming semifinals mark the next step in what is already shaping as a standout year – and a chance to add her voice to an important national dialogue.

“The beauty of being able to listen to other youth take a stand through this competition was inspirational, and I hope to represent Tauranga Girls’ College with pride as I take on this honour,” Miri said.

Despite the technical nature of radio communications, Watson said people might be surprised at how easy it is to get involved.

“You don’t have to be a ‘radio nerd’ or have any prior experience,” she said. “If you can listen and take notes, we can teach you what you need to know – often in just a couple of training sessions.”

Volunteers don’t need to buy their own equipment, and many are drawn simply by a desire to help their community.

“It’s about being part of something that makes a real difference when it matters most,” Watson said.

AREC teams throughout the country were also monitoring high-frequency (HF) radio networks during the cyclone period, creating a nationwide safety net in case communications failed entirely.

The Tauranga group said the opportunity to support Tairāwhiti was both rewarding and eye-opening – and they hope it’s just the beginning.

“We’d love to see a stronger network set up across the Bay of Plenty,” Watson said. “If every small community hub had reliable radio communications, they wouldn’t be isolated in a disaster.

“They could still reach out, get help, and let family know they’re safe.”

“Cell phones and satellite systems are great – until they’re not,” Watson said.

“Towers can go down, batteries only last so long, and networks get congested very quickly. That’s where we come in.”

AREC is a volunteer organisation that provides emergency radio communications during disasters and search and rescue operations. Established in New Zealand following the Napier earthquake in 1931, the group has evolved into a key nationwide support service for Civil Defence, police, and Land Search and Rescue teams.

“We were doing hourly check-ins with remote areas to make sure people were safe and still able to communicate,” Watson said. “At one point, we noticed a community had stopped responding. By checking our radio logs, we were able to confirm their power – and backup power – had failed, and that triggered a response to check on them.”

While Gisborne’s cell phone network remained largely intact during this event, Watson said the experience reinforced how quickly that could change. “After Cyclone Gabrielle, parts of the region were completely cut off. That’s why having a contingency plan is so important. Radio doesn’t rely on the same infrastructure; it gives you another layer of resilience.”

Feel the burn, win a national title Things will get very hot and spicy in Tauranga City tomorrow, May 2, as the national final of the 2026 New Zealand National Chilli Eating Challenge comes to town!

Tauranga has held a regional ‘heat’ of the competition for four years but this year The Barrel Room is the national host – meaning locals can feel the burn to try and claim the NZ Chilli Eating Champion crown, and $500 cash.

Organiser Mark Jackson said tomorow’s event runs 12pm-6pm and will swallow up Wharf St’s pedestrian-only strip in the CBD and offer a festival atmosphere.

The Scoville scale measures the pungency, or ‘heat’ of chilli peppers.

“This scale determines how hot a chilli is. For example, 1 scoville takes 1.8 million drops of water to remove the heat. If you look up 1.8m drops of water, it’s about 500L.”

New analysis of ACC injury claims shows nearly 60% of last season’s duck hunting injuries occurred on opening weekend, when the highest number of hunters were in the field. Of 39 injuries recorded during the season, 23 happened on opening weekend, including 12 involving firearms.

The remaining injuries were mostly the result of slips, trips and falls in or around maimai. “We know hunters take safety seriously and are using firearms responsibly,” Mountain Safety Council chief executive Mike Daisley said.

“However, maimai around the motu will be busy on opening weekend with everyone keen to bag a duck. Things can happen quickly, and that can lead to

avoidable mistakes.” MSC urged hunters to take extra care by confirming their firing zones, maintaining control of their shotgun at all times, communicating clearly with others in the maimai, and saving alcohol until after the shoot when all firearms have been safely stowed away.

Following the seven Firearms Safety Rules is critical to ensuring a safe season, Daisley said. “This is especially important in a maimai, where there is limited space and often more than one person using a firearm at the same time.”

• When it’s dark or raining, visibility can be tricky. You can help the driver spot you by stepping closer to the curb and clearly waving them down. If you have your phone in your hand, the light can help too.

Stand-up paddleboarding has surged in popularity, but too many people are putting themselves – and their wallets – at risk by heading out without a lifejacket.

• Stay visible until the bus arrives.

Trio head to Men’s Roller Derb

Veronica’s fellow NZ women’s roller derby representative Jasmine Cooper – known on track as Monsterella – will help her coach the men’s team, called Kiwi Toa. Men’s roller derby competitions don’t have gender restrictions like women’s do, Veronica said. Cooper, now helping coach Kiwi Toa, had been taught to play the sport

“Jasmine and I are both coaches at Moana Roller Derby,” Veronica said. “We both travelled to Austria as part of the NZ team in 2025’s women’s world cup – while she’s on the roster for the men’s world cup, she doesn’t plan to skate,” Veronica said.

“She’s a great skater, she’s a very good coach – and she’ll manage the bench in France.”

Veronica said Kiwi Toa had 17 people on the roster for the men’s world cup, with the most exciting thing being that they would play host nation – France – in the competition’s first game.

Funds raised will go towards the planned Bay of Plenty Movement HQ – a multipurpose facility designed to bring together sport, fitness and wellness providers under one roof. Gymnastics, parkour, dance, tumbling, soccer, trampoline, cross sport training, cheerleading, martial arts, acro, tricking, holiday programmes, preschool play sessions, aerial/circus arts, adult fitness and more are expected.

“It will be a hub that everybody can go to for sport, movement and wellness - from ages zero to 99,” Erin McKenna, general manager of Te Puke Gymsport said.

The proposed facility and collaborative project will bring together groups including Te Puke Gymsport, Te Puke Dance Studios, Te Puke Junior Football and the Graeme Dingle Foundation, with plans to expand offerings over time.

Learning hub helps migrant ffamilies navigate school system

A popular programme helping migrant families better understand New Zealand’s education system is returning to Tauranga this May. Multicultural Tauranga is partnering with Gate Pā School to deliver the Community Learning Hub for a second year in the Bay of Plenty, following strong feedback from its 2025 launch.

Funded by the Ministry of Education, the hub offers a series of free workshops designed to help newcomer parents build confidence, understand

how schools operate, and learn how to support their children’s education.

The programme begins on May 7 and will run across five sessions, covering everything from the structure of the New Zealand education system to understanding different year levels, learning support, and how to communicate effectively with teachers.

Lead educator Cindy Hurren said organisers are expecting another positive response after last year’s success.

“We are confident this hub will be just as successful as the first one hosted by Pāpāmoa

Rochelle Jensen said the school was proud to host the Community Learning Hub 2026, particularly given the diversity of its community.

“We have a significant number of migrant families, and programmes like this help strengthen the connection between home and school,” she said.

There’s many ways to make m mum’s day They’re the mainstay of most households, the pillars on the sidelines of innumerable activities and the backbones of many businesses too!

Often their love, care and mahi (work) goes unnoticed – but on May 10 it won’t.

Celebrations are in order at the Bernina Sewing Centre Tauranga, as it marks an impressive 56 years in business – an achievement few can claim.

This family-owned-and-operated store stocks Bernina and Bernette sewing machines and overlockers and was originally founded by Bev and Ken Hayman in 1970. After Ken’s passing, their daughters, Robyn Curd and Glenda Moore, purchased the business from their mum – who is now her nineties and a regular store visitor. The sisters have owned it for 19 years.

Robyn said the success of the business was due to the quality Swiss-engineered machines they sell and the aftercare they provide to clients purchasing any machine.

“We offer and encourage them to classes so they can learn and get the most from their machines.” Robyn is also the friendly

face on the store’s YouTube channel, demonstrating and offering advice.

Student sewing, Bernina club, advanced and beginner patchwork, and freehand quilting are just some of the classes the store offers.

Some sewers have been coming to classes for more than 25 years, Robyn said. “This one-stop shop has everything you need for sewing and quilting, such as fabrics, buttons, thread, zips, and hobby supplies.”

The servicing and repairs side of the business is owned by Stephen Curd, and is done on-site and available for all types of machines. The man behind the baton Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s musical director Michael Joel doesn’t see himself as the boss. He’s more interested in listening.

“It’s a whole lot of communication, from the composers, to me, to the orchestra, to the audience,” Joel said. “That's what music is.”

Joel returned to New Zealand from the UK in 2021 and was quickly invited to guest conduct the symphonia – an experience that left a lasting impression.

Already leading St Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra in Auckland, he recognised something special in the BOP Symphonia’s spirit. This year he said, ‘yes’ to the musical director role.

What drew him in was the people. “When I come to rehearsal, there’s this joyful hum before it starts. That’s a great sign of people who enjoy playing together. If they enjoy playing together, the orchestra gets better,” he said. “It seems simple, but it doesn’t always occur.”

Central to this Sunday, May 3’s Romance & Virtuosity programme is Joel’s creative partnership with violin soloist Lara Hall.

It’s a collaboration he described as effortless and ego-free. “She’s a phenomenal musician and phenomenal violin player. It’s very rare to get those two things together.”

Joel said their partnership work because neither leads nor follows in any rigid sense, it’s a conversation.

Hall shapes the music the way she hears it, Joel guides the orchestra to listen and respond,

and something organic emerges ffrom that h interaction.

Hall also understands the symphonia from the inside, and knows what it is to play at every level, and brings that empathy to every rehearsal, Joel said.

However, we’re back to core business this week, examining the manifold pleasures of Tauranga’s music scene. Things are slowing down a little bit, with it being too expensive to leave the house let alone tour the country. But since we’ve hit a new month, let’s have a look at some of the treats May has on offer.

There’s a bit of everything...

It is, of course, New Zealand Music Month, so kicking things off is a gig by Tauranga singersongwriter Sophie-Maude at the library space in town at 21 Devonport Rd on the evening of May 8.

Self-expression

Sophie-Maude is developing quite the following. Drawing from her experiences living with Autism, ADHD, OCD, and Tourette syndrome, she uses songwriting as a form of self-expression. What is most impressive is that heavy and challenging though that sounds what she produces is very accessible involving pop electronica. Her latest release, Hotel Lobby, is a perfectly crafted example of this though her several singles,

stretching back to 2020, all stand up.

She first played at the library four years ago, winning everyone over with her storytelling, humour, and charm. This time she’ll be accompanied by guitarist Ian Pirrie and will talk about her own journey with songwriting and music.

The next night, May 9, there’s Kiwi music at Ōkahukura, the Bohemian gallery in town at 14 Grey St, where Auckland-based alternative rock outfit Capricore make their Tauranga debut, I believe.

They have a new album ready to go and team up with local bands Velouria and Eddie & the Dreamers for a night of musical eccentricity.

But it’s later in May that things really take off, and I

mention this early because you might need to plan ahead.

Like no one else

On May 21 there’s a guitarist coming to Totara Street called Alexandr Misko. He’s Russian and plays acoustic guitar. Like no one else. Total Guitar described him as “the future of guitar” and all I can say is have a look on YouTube. This guy is simply unbelievable. Incredible.

The blurb says: “Misko is a globally renowned virtuoso known for his jaw-dropping technique, emotional depth, and genre-defying style”. I couldn’t put it better. Damn, the guy can play.

On May 22 there are gleeful noise-makers doing the bizzo down at The Jam Factory: hi-energy Waihi

punk-popsters Not Exact will be joined by new Tauranga four-piece kincaid, who cite Queens of the Stone Age and Sonic Youth as influences, and post-punk poetess and songstress StellaVision for a couple of hours of alternative heaven.

Meanwhile, that weekend happens to be Uncle Bob’s birthday, so a new outfit, The Dylanistas, is celebrating by playing The Songs Of Bob Dylan. Or at least a few dozen of them. You’ll find them in Katikati at The Arts Junction on May 22 and at Tauranga’s Jam Factory on May 23. And there's more.
