Dreaming big! Choosing songs and shaping harmonies is under way for Tauranga’s much-loved Primary Schools Music Festival, when hundreds of young voices will once again fill Baycourt’s Addison Theatre. One of the Bay of Plenty’s longest-running community arts events, the festival celebrates

its 70th anniversary this coming August, with more than 1000 students from 32 primary and intermediate schools performing across five nights. This year’s theme, Dream Big, reflects both the aspirations of the children on stage and the vision that launched the festival seven

decades ago. “The festival started as a dream 70 years ago, and here we are, still going strong, still giving children this incredible opportunity to perform on a professional stage,” said Rachael McKoy, who is pictured on the right with fellow co-director and conductor Jeremy Hantler to the left.

Students from Years 4-8 will perform massed choir numbers alongside individual school items, including a special anniversary song from the festival’s early years. The festival runs at Baycourt August 31-September 4. Read more on page 12. Photo / Jo Jones
