Scrambled eggs or Marijuana?

Do I look like El Chapo? A drug lord?

Or an alleged narco terrorist bunked up at the dodgy one star Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn?

Was I meant to be selling the drugs, or buying the drugs?

Or maybe I was mistaken for a drug addled geriatric?

So many questions. I’m confused.

Because the other morning, at a respectable 10.07, in a vaguely respectable suburban shopping precinct in quaint old Tauranga, I got hit up.

Not for “spare coins”, but by someone checking my recreational drug use. Or trying to do a deal.

“Do you use marijuana?” he asked me.

Straight up. No messing. Just blurted it into my face.

“Do you use marijuana?” he repeated.

I was under interrogation and I had no answers.

Was he wearing a wire? Was the drug squad listening? Would they kick in my front door if I answered yes?

Sputtered and stuttered

A nondescript sort of bloke, mid 30s. I fumbled pathetically for a response.

Something clever dick like, “No, I’m just high on life.” Or “I’m more a mainlining and cocaine kind of guy.” Or any of that euphoria and energy inducing party stuff.

As long as the party finishes by 9, because age dictates I have early nights.

But I missed the moment – just sputtered and stuttered and said, “No. Not really.”

Not really meaning no, not ever. Does a dry sherry aperitif count?

Why did he want to know? And before I could ask, the man I suspected of trying to broker an illicit drug deal thanked me kindly and shuffled off down the road.

I will never know, and my curiosity is killing me.

2026 was only three days old and the year was already turning to cold custard with an impenetrable skin on top.

But I was also delighted to discover that Tauranga, with all its delightful aloofness and pretension, also has its allocation of crazies, whackos and weirdos.

Makes us more big city and colourful.

They’re probably all Auckland cast offs anyway.

‘Neck minute’

I had just been popping into the supermarket to buy supplies for Saturday morning scrambled eggs. Mundane stuff.

“Nek minute” I’m pondering the modus operandi of drug dealers. Why would they conduct business in broad daylight in a public place?

Perhaps that’s a cover in itself. What would I know?

Not appearing suspicious – blending – is the art. I would have thought sunglasses, hoodies, darkness and isolation would have been a crim’s best friends.

Bonjour Behemoth

A guy who should be able to sniff out a plain clothes man, who’s probably had his share of face time with police, confirmed it for me.

He stared at me in the public gallery during a manslaughter trial – a behemoth of a man with a clenched fist and a bulldog wearing a German military helmet tattooed on his face.

Not a good look.

But if intimidation was the aim, it worked perfectly.

“You a f*****g cop?” he inquired of me during a break in proceedings.

“What are you doing here?”

“I am not a cop,” I stammered back at Behemoth. “I’m a casual trial spotter. A justice hobbyist.”

I explained that some near deads like me do scrapbooking, gardening and line dancing.

I enjoy the real life drama of the courtroom. I probably qualify as a crazy, whacko and weirdo.

Oh! And the Behemoth – after I convinced him I wasn’t a snitch or a cop, he became my new best buddy for a day or two.

We chatted – he almost cried with pride for the Warriors league team; he explained why low cut Red Bands were his footwear of choice; and how he was petrified of a forceful mum who wanted him rid of gangs.

We also argued burgers – King versus Fuel.

So one day I am going to order a Triple Whopper and explain it’s on the recommendation of the Mongrel Mob. That should get a reaction.

Uffindell wins uncontested reselection in Tauranga Tauranga MP Sam Uffindell has been confirmed as National’s candidate for the Tauranga electorate in the 2026 general election, describing his uncontested reselection as “a real honour” and a vote of confidence in his work to date.

“I’m looking forward to campaigning on my record of personally standing up for people in Tauranga,” Uffindell said, pointing to his advocacy on the Tauranga Marine Precinct, major roading upgrades and efforts to secure a regional deal with central government.

He said party members had shown strong support.

“We have one of the highest memberships of any electorate in New Zealand, and I’m thankful to all our members and volunteers.”

Electorate boundary changes for 2026 would shift Tauranga west, adding Te Puna, Minden, Wairoa, Lower Kaimai, Tauriko West, and more of The Lakes and Pyes Pā. The Bay of Plenty electorate would take in Mount Maunganui and be renamed Mt Maunganui.

Uffindell said Tauranga has enormous growth pressures that require coordinated planning across housing, transport, health and education.

“We need more affordable housing, more schools, improved

Uffindell noted affordability pressures have eased: rents stabilised after rising $170 per week from 2017–2023, and price-to-income ratios have improved.

Public safety had also improved, with Uffindell crediting targeted police units and political backing.

“It’s a lot safer now walking around downtown Tauranga at night.”

On health, Uffindell said Tauranga would receive a new

24/7 urgent care service from 2026, alongside expanded afterhours and weekend care to ease pressure on Tauranga Hospital.

He currently chairs Parliament’s Health Select Committee.

He has challenged his own party on local issues, opposing Plan Change 33 and criticising the Marine Precinct sale.

“Too often the will of the people doesn’t come through,” he said. “If re-elected, Tauranga will get the recognition it deserves. Serving this city is a privilege, and I’ll do my best to keep delivering.”

Rugby and cricket stars clash at Bay Oval There will be “no mucking around” when New Zealand’s rugby legends and cricket stars face off in a fastpaced, fun-filled T20 showdown at the Bay Oval next weekend.

Tracks full of fun at moodel Train enthusiasts – young to not-so-young – are urged to mark January 17-18 as ‘busy’ as Tauranga Model Railway Club (TRC) hosts its 34th Model Train Show at boys’ college gymnasium.

Inside the venue, from 10am-4pm daily, visitors will be whisked into a world of recreated railway models in what is the Bay of Plenty’s only annual exhibition of its type.

It’s a place where grown men can be brought to their knees, witnessing the beauty of hand-built railways scenes from the past.

Show organiser Trevor Gardiner expects more than 1000 people to flow through the doors.“Our club’s main layout we put in the show each year is based on the old Katikati station.”

It’s a 1:64 scale version of the Katikati railway yards of 70 years ago, right down to the faithfully replicated trees, bushes, paths, walkways, vehicles and sheds, when steam ruled, before the station burned down, before the tracks were dug up and developers drove their life-size bulldozers on to the site on the northern fringes of town.

Gardiner said his club would have at least three layouts – and visiting displays would make up the rest.

“New to the show is a layout that will be coming from Masterton. This will depict an old bush tramway scene from somewhere in New Zealand.”

Not all model trains are the same –

which would be evident at the show, Gardiner said.

“The layouts – from our club and elsewhere – generally cover New Zealand, English, European and American railways.”

In the thick of the school holidays, Gardiner said the show was a great outing for youngsters. On top of the displays, for children would be a Thomas the Tank Engine layout and free, hands-on activities.

For adults, trade stands will be present plus displays including Tauranga Model Marine & Engineering Club, which owns and operates the Miniature Railway for the public every Sunday at Memorial Park.

“The show’s two mornings are always busy – so if you want a quieter time to come along, try the afternoons.”

Tauranga Railway Club’s 34th Model Train Show is 10am-4pm on January 17-18 at Tauranga Boys’ College gymnasium. Main entry is off Merle Cave Devonport Rd.

Sikh parade to bring colour to streets

The 2026 Fulton Hogan Mount Festival of Multisport is being held on January 17.

Tauranga’s streets will come alive with music, colour and celebration on Sunday, when the city’s Sikh community hosts its annual Nagar Kirtan parade.

The procession, which runs from 11am to 2pm, will depart from the Gurudwara Sikh Sangat, at 43 Burrows St and travel through nearby streets before returning to Burrows St. The Sikh Tauranga Parade celebrated the birth of the 10th Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, and was one of the most important events on the Sikh calendar.

Gurudwara Sikh Sangat Tauranga president Puran Singh said Guru Gobind Singh Ji was remembered as the founder of the Khalsa Panth and a champion of equality, justice and courage.

“The event brings the community

together in remembrance of Guru Ji’s teachings of selfless service, unity, and standing up for truth, while welcoming people of all backgrounds to share in this spiritual and cultural celebration.”

Singh said the annual parade was a way of sharing Sikh values and hospitality with the wider community. The parade route would travel from Burrows St to 14th Ave, along Devonport Rd, then via 11th Ave, Fraser St and 13th Ave before finishing back at the Sikh Temple on Burrows St. Rolling road closures would be in place between 11am and 3pm as the procession passes, with roads reopening progressively.

Tauranga City Council, police and traffic management staff are supporting the event to ensure public safety.

Mount Maunganui set to host 2026 Festival of Multisport The 2026 Fulton Hogan Mount Festival of Multisport returns to Mount Maunganui on Saturday, January 17, bringing a weekend of endurance sport, community spirit and summer celebration to Tauranga.

Held in a usually sun-drenched coastal setting, the annual festival celebrates active lifestyles, fitness and fun, and continues a proud tradition of multisport events in the region.

At its heart is the Loan Market Oceanside Tauranga Half Triathlon, widely regarded as Tauranga’s pinnacle sporting event and one of New Zealand’s longest-running triathlons.

First staged in 1990, the iconic Tauranga Half has become a fixture of the local summer.

In 2015, organisers expanded the programme to create a broader festival experience, adding events to cater for athletes of varying abilities.

These events now sit under the Fulton Hogan Mount Festival of Multisport banner, with the goal of getting “more people, more active, more often”.

The festival programme includes the Loan Market Oceanside Tauranga Half Triathlon (2km swim, 90km bike and 21.1km run); the iLine Construction AquaBike (2km swim and 90km bike); and the Waitoa Mount Festival Half Marathon (5km, 10.5km or 21km options).

While each event has its own identity, together they offer a diverse and exciting experience for both competitors and

spectators. Whether entrants are chasing a personal best or taking part for the first time, there is something for everyone, organisers said.

Based at Pilot Bay, the festival promises a vibrant weekend of action against a backdrop of stunning coastal scenery.

The Waitoa Mount Festival Half Marathon 21.1km course runs along Marine Parade, Oceanbeach Rd and Maranui St before turning at Sunbrae Grove and looping around the base of Mauao to the finish.

Shorter 10.5km and 5km distances are also available, making it accessible for families and recreational runners.

Known for its flat and fast course and spectacular views, the Loan Market Oceanside Tauranga Half Triathlon can be entered by individuals or teams and draws athletes from across the country.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead, as significant road closures will be in place during the event. Closures include Salisbury Ave, The Mall, Marine Parade, Oceanbeach Rd and several surrounding streets at various times from Friday, January 16, through to Saturday evening.

The Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road eastbound lanes between Domain Rd and the Paengaroa roundabout will also be closed from 5.30am to 1pm on January 17, with eastbound traffic diverted via Te Puke Highway. Westbound lanes will remain open.

Organisers encourage the community to support participants and enjoy the atmosphere as Mount Maunganui once again becomes the centre of multisport action.

Unstoppable summer photo winners Rozanne Latimer’s photograph captures a quintessential summer moment on Pāpāmoa Beach — her young granddaughter taking part in the Nippers programme at the Pāpāmoa Surf Life Saving Club.

The image, which won The Weekend Sun’s Unstoppable Summer competition and a $50 Pak ‘n Save voucher, shows seven-year-old Peyton Cuff confidently immersed in a Sunday morning Nippers session, where children learn beach safety and water skills through games, relays and time in the surf.

“It’s sort of a journey into lifesaving,” Latimer said. “They start them at about five years old and take them right through until they’re teenagers.”

Now in her third season, Peyton has grown noticeably more confident in the water.

“She’s always been a confident little pixie.” Latimer said, “It’s really good for their water safety and understanding the conditions - especially living so close to the beach.”

Latimer said the weekly programme, held every Sunday morning during the season, attracts large numbers of families.

“You’d be amazed at how many people are down there. It’s massive,” she said.

“There’s such a great atmosphere.”

The sessions run for a couple of hours and include beach games, sand relays and, as children grow older, increased

time in the water.

“As they get older, they get into the water more, which is really cool,” Latimer said.

She said the programme plays an important role in teaching safety messages at a time when coastal communities are increasingly focused on water awareness.

“They do an awesome job. With all the water safety messaging around at the moment, it’s just so valuable.”

Latimer said the photo reflects everything she loves about summer family, the beach and seeing children gain confidence in a safe, supportive environment.

“It’s just lovely down there on a nice day,” she said. “That’s what summer’s all about.”

Everyone was telling her that they thought she should abort the baby as she had such a promising career ahead of her and she shouldn’t let this unplanned pregnancy derail her plans. I told her that although this was difficult timing, this baby could be a blessing to another family through adoption.

She chose an open adoption, had a precious baby girl which she placed in the arms of the loving family she had carefully

selected, and went on to complete Med School.

She kept in contact with her baby girl and her adoptive family and would meet up with them for holidays. What a feeling of peace and accomplishment to take the life and loving giving option of adoption to an unplanned pregnancy. She’s a Doctor now with a family of her own.

Think too about Jacinda Ardern getting pregnant with her baby girl right as she became Prime Minister. That sets another example of being able to handle babies as the blessings they are!

Inflatable football supercharges kids’ summer holidays A fully inflatable football experience is set to bring a new level of excitement to the summer school holidays.

Fun First Football has teamed up with Tauranga Football Club and Papamoa Football Club to deliver two weeks of high-energy activities for children aged 4-14 from January 19-30.

Fun First Football founder Colm Kenny said the programme was perfectly timed as interest in the sport surged following the All Whites’ qualification for the 2026 Fifa World Cup. “Any footballing parent will be interested in this, especially with New Zealand qualifying for the World Cup,” Kenny said. “We’re giving kids an allaction two weeks of football fun.”

The programme will utilise Fun First Football’s inflatable playing fields, alongside the brand-new AstroTurf at Tauranga Football Club’s Links Avenue grounds and the indoor sports hall at Pāpāmoa College.

Children could attend either a half-day session from 9am - 12pm or a full day from 9am - 3pm.

Kenny said last summer’s programme attracted 64 children each day.

“All kids need was themselves, a snack for a half day — or snack and lunch for a full day — and a water bottle. We’ll bring the sunscreen and the fun football.”

Kenny said the holiday programme often served as a pathway into his afterschool football initiatives, now operating across 12 locations in Mount Maunganui, Pāpāmoa, Tauranga and Ōmokoroa.

“It builds their confidence, so they then go on to our three local clubs — Tauranga, Pāpāmoa and Ōtūmoetai — and create more success.”

The holiday sessions included inflatable football fields and a range of fast-paced games for the younger kids such as Foot Bowling, Tunnel of Death, Shark Game, Big Giant Ball Game and the Ninja Noodle Game.

For the older kids, there will be lots of fun football matches.

“These games are all about kids learning through fun rather than structured coaching,” Kenny said.

“It’s important to make sport fun when they start playing, and not about being the best.”

Kenny has been running children’s football programmes for eight years.

What began with just a handful of kids at Arataki Park has grown into a thriving after-school initiative with more than 420 children taking part each term.

“We started with six or seven kids,” he said.

“Before long, we were up to 24, then expanded to Pāpāmoa and Ōmanu. I found myself running all over the field after balls — and that’s when the idea for inflatable fields came to me.”

The custom-built inflatable fields were manufactured in China and now number four, providing safe, enclosed playing spaces for young athletes.

Kenny believed Fun First Football was the largest independent school-based football programme in New Zealand.

He also acknowledged the support of local businesses such as Lone Star, Freeport, CBK and Village Green Bar

Kenny pointed to recent successes at Tauranga Moana FC as evidence of the region’s growing football strength.

“The U17 Girls recently won the massive NZ Western Springs Football Tournament, and the U15 Boys’ won the Gold Coast Premier Invitational Tournament in Australia. These are incredible achievements — the future is bright in the region.”

He said the All Whites’ 3-0 victory over New Caledonia, which secured their place at the 2026 World Cup in front of more than 25,000 fans at Eden Park, has boosted interest even further.

“New Zealand qualifying for the World Cup is awesome!” Kenny said.

“Also, the draw has not been too bad for them, so it really is a great chance to make it out of the group stages for the first time in their history.”

The All Whites would face Belgium, Egypt and Iran in Group G and are expected to play their matches in major venues, including Los Angeles and Vancouver.

With an improved Fifa ranking and a wider tournament format, hopes are rising for a competitive Kiwi showing on the world stage.

‘Super January’ works close part of Cambridge Rd

Motorists are being reminded to expect disruption through January as an intensive construction programme gets under way at the State Highway 29/Cambridge Rd intersection.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said January marks a major milestone for the Tauriko Enabling Works project, with crews using the quieter summer period to push ahead with key stages of the intersection upgrade.

The agency has dubbed the effort “Super January”, taking advantage of lower traffic volumes and the absence of school buses to complete as much work as possible during this period.

Acting infrastructure delivery regional manager Darryl Coalter said the programme included removing temporary sheet piles, earthworks, relocating utilities, road construction and resurfacing.

“To do this safely, we needed to close a short section of the northbound lane on Cambridge Rd, from

the SH29 intersection to 579 Cambridge Rd,” Coalter said.

The closure came into effect on January 3 and was expected to be in place until early February.

“All Bethlehem-bound vehicles would need to detour via SH29 Takitimu Drive Toll Rd or SH29A and Cameron Rd. The southbound lane would remain open.”

Coalter acknowledged the disruption but said crews would work extended hours to reduce the overall impact.

“This short-term inconvenience would mean less disruptions in the future.”

Work would take place seven days a week, with some extended shifts from 7am to midnight and night works between 6pm and 5am.

The SH29/Cambridge Rd intersection upgrade began in late 2024 with the construction of a

210m retaining wall supported by temporary sheet piles. The first stage of removing those piles is already under way behind safety barriers, with no impact on traffic.

Once the January programme was completed, construction would move on to road widening and pavement works. The full upgrade was expected to be finished in 2027.

Blood donation rules changing in 2026 The blood service is on track to start accepting donations from men who have sex with men by the middle of 2026.

It has been almost two years since NZ Blood first committed to change its rules, and almost a year since Medsafe gave it the green light.

“So there’s been quite a lot involved in making the decision to do this, but we’ve made that decision and we’re committed to seeing it through.”

The Burnett Foundation, formerly the Aids Foundation, had long been campaigning for such a change.

The foundation’s research and policy officer Pete Hanl said he “can’t wait,” but “safety is always first”.

“I think we’re moving in the right direction, and it’s important that things are getting done in the right way,” he said.

“New Zealanders need to have full trust that the blood donation process is safe.”

Hanl noted that in the SPOTS study, only 13% of gay or bisexual men surveyed fit the existing criteria of not having had sex in the prior three months.

“Why should people who live in a monogamous relationship not be able to donate blood?”

“Just like anybody else, MSM try to be altruistic and do something good for the community.”

Cho said gay and bisexual men eager to donate blood would have to wait just a little bit longer.

“We don’t have a definite date at the moment, we’re confident it will probably be in 2026 and our hope is to be able to announce a date early in the year,” he said.

“We’re aiming for the first half of the year, but there’s no firm commitment at the moment because there are still a few things we need to have in place.”

Extreme caution was needed if consuming synthetic drugs, the spokesperson said, especially in the Auckland region.

“If you or someone you know takes this substance and starts to lose consciousness or stops breathing, call 111 immediately.”

Synthetic cannabinoids could vary in strength, High Alert said, and what was a safe dose for one may be a fatal dose for another.

It was often diluted and sprayed on to plant material which led to different concentrations, which made it harder to predict how strong the effects would be.

People who had taken the drugs could collapse, foam at the mouth or experience temporary paralysis.

Effects could be made worse if used with alcohol or other drugs or medications, if a person was unwell or was experiencing mental distress.

The Drug Foundation’s executive director, Sarah Helm, said synthetic cannabinoids could be deadly, and warned the drug had caused a number of fatalities.

“We lost over 117 New Zealanders to synthetic cannabinoids in about 2017. They have been around on and off ever since.”

Looking back – 2025 wrapped We’re back! So, this week, a glance in the rear-view mirror at music that emerged from the Bay in 2025.

First, however, I’d like to mention three musicians we lost last year, all of whom left a lasting impact on the music scene.

There was singer, songwriter, author, and indefatigable creator Shirley Ryder, who made music right up until cancer finally silenced her; there was New Zealand jazz piano legend John Key, who played everywhere from the Montreux Jazz Festival and London’s Ronnie Scott Club to Tauranga Jazz Society nights at the Mount Social Club.

And there was Dave Roy, an artist, a singer-songwriter with over a dozen albums to his name, and a friend to more folk in the artistic community than anyone I knew. The new year will be less rich without them.

2025 music

So... music released last year. It roughly falls into three categories: jazzrelated, mainstream, and hardcore. In no real order...

On the jazz front Jill Leighton, founder of the Jack Dusty’s Ukulele Singers, released her first album, ‘It’s All About Love’, a labour of love for Jill and producer David Aupapa, featuring local musicians and beautifully played jazz standards.

Liam Ryan channelled elegant sophistication for his collaboration with Kiwi soul legend Evan Silva, ‘Pastiche’, four tracks of smooth orchestral jazz.

oriented instrumental albums skirted the modern-jazz label: Drosan’s self-titled album of smooth Latin-influenced sounds and Fragile Colours ‘Experiments In Depth Of Field At The Arabica Café’, created by Tim Julian at Colourfield Studio from Brian Franks’s bass lines.

Jazz and mainstream

Meanwhile, new monthly jazz nights at the Tauranga Club, Black Coffee, are adding colour to the local scene and two Tauranga exports to Wellington are excelling: Sax wiz Oscar Lavën produced possibly the year’s finest jazz offering with ‘Elegant Calamity’, a remarkable live 18-piece band album of his own compositions; and guitarist Lockie Bennett showed he can play as many notes as Django on his self-titled trio album.

Unturned’ album and two subsequent singles, all featuring teenage sons Bryn and Lennox. Five-piece Creatures Of Comfort joined the ranks of Tauranga Recording Artists with their debut EP ‘The Great Unknown’, as did Noel Smith and The Greenroom, a two-decade-long Tauranga institution, who released their long-awaited debut ‘Before60’.

There were also a bunch of fun new singles, including the psychedelic madness of Inth’way Mangosteen Experience’s ‘Tighter Jeans, Higher Screams’, the best pair of songs so far from The Artist Red, a Christmas ditty from Simple Billy, and the Bay’s first Punjabi rap song, SP P4NDIT’s ‘All Eyes Down’.

At the hardcore end of things, young Te Puke punks Punktuation unleashed a debut EP, while Threat.Meet.Protocol and False Waltons produced outstanding albums, the former self-titled, the latter called ‘The Purpose’. If I had more space I would rave about both – they are serious bits of work made with intelligence, skill and imagination, and filled with exhilarating music.

Surf showdown The Eastern Regional Championships will return to Tauranga later this month.

More than 1300 young athletes will gather at Tauranga Domain this weekend for the 2026 North Island Colgate Games, one of New Zealand’s most iconic junior sporting events.

Running January 9–11, the three-day meet features 1344 athletes aged 7–14 competing in track and field events from sprints to throws and relays. Daily competition starts at 8am and wraps up Sunday at 5pm, following Thursday’s Opening Ceremony and march-past celebrating clubs and families.

“The Colgate Games are the heartbeat of junior athletics in New Zealand. Seeing more

than 2,300 kids lining up this summer is incredible,” Athletics New Zealand head of track and field events, Keegan McCauley said.

“These events aren’t just about competition; they’re about creating lifelong memories and new friendships, and building the fundamental skills that athletics helps develop in our tamariki. Tauranga and Nelson are going to be buzzing.”

Participation is open to Athletics NZ-affiliated club members, with an emphasis on fun for ages 7–9 and medals for 10–14-year-olds.

Athletes can enter up to five events plus relays.
