Spies, pies, spines and whines We can rebuild him A few of you are still quite concerned about the Government’s spies and the new potential they may have to monitor you.

I can imagine this must be quite disconcerting – if you are a treacherous, treasonous terrorist.

If not, I can’t see the problem. If you’ve got nothing to hide, why would you possibly have a problem with being spied on?

A couple of letter writers to the Sun, in recent times have been squirming about the prospect of spies watching over them.

We can only conclude they have something to hide and I’d recommend the GCSB flick back through the Sun files and make a note of these insurgents, worthy of closer investigation. Ironically, it’s those who protest the most about the intrusion into their supposedly scintillating private lives that could become the very focus of the spies!

Do the maths. There are four million of us, versus a handful of spies.

They can’t possibly be watching or listening to all of us at once. Besides, most spies are more concerned about keeping tabs on their briefcases containing pornography and cold pies.* If you are an average, law-abiding Kiwi – and not plotting any treason, terrorism, or general subversiveness – you are not going to be of the slightest interest to the GCSB. In fact, the lives of most of us would bore any spy to serious self-harm within minutes.

Make it easy.

So just in case the GCSB is thinking of monitoring the Rabbit for signs of treachery, we’ve decided to make it easy for them, by publishing the most interesting excerpts of deeply personal conversations from within the RR headquarters, to save one spy the job of bugging us, so they can get on with eating the pies and reading the interesting articles.* The first in the series is

this deeply controversial and subversive tale of a trip to the chiropractor.

Back to the future

The Rabbit has embarked on a physical rejuvenation project this month, in an effort to turn back the clock on ageing, general deterioration and years of bodily abuse.

Spotting an ad in the Sun last week from Oceanside Chiropractic, I made an appointment and went along to see if they could help with a few odd ailments.

Too many years of sport, falling off surf boards and a variety of floating objects;

years spent hurtling down rivers, often upside down – before Bill Ross and Barry Anderson showed me ye olde Eskimo roll, which I found improved the ride for head, neck and spine – and by staying upright, also improved the scenic attributes of river travel.

Remarkably, it seems, there is some hope. The nice people at the chiropractic place reckon they can fix years of abuse.

I was very impressed with the service and professionalism, as they gave me a thorough check over. There was some wear and tear of various bits and bones, which they sounded pretty confident could be treated; although there was little hope for the funny bone, which seemed to have worn pretty thin.

After filling out a form with important information on it, (including asking

whether there was a chance I was pregnant, which I believe is fairly low but I’ll keep trying), I was given a map of the body and asked to mark the parts which were giving trouble.

The diagram ended up looking like a noughts and crosses board. They were a bit puzzled about the circle off to one side of the page. I explained this was pain that came out of left field.

Then I was sat in front of a screen to watch a video, explaining how chiropractic practices practise. (When they’ve finished practising, they do it for real). Next to the desk was a skeleton. I agreed to watch the film for a while, but not as long as that guy.

Then we discussed diet and weight, the spine guy didn’t have much to say. I guess he’s taken the whole diet idea a bit too far.

The chiropractor listened, but omitted to congratulate me on managing to stave off anorexia for another year.

Despite this minor setback, I still feel motivated to fight back against starvation at every possible chance.

Next up were x-rays, to check if bones still exist under the winter blubber layers and assess their condition.

Then it was time for the treatment, or ‘adjustment’, which was quick and easy and produced almost instant, remarkable results. I wish I’d been to the chiropractor a year ago.

The neck pain has virtually disappeared and the headaches gone. Although, I still hear the voices.

Rena dispute The New Zealand Merchant Service Guild is saying the Rena salvors Resolve Salvage and Fire are refusing to hire Kiwi officers for the tugs working on the grounded cargo ship’s salvage.

As result, the guild, which is the union for ship officers and engineers, is asking Immigration New Zealand to revoke the work visas for the tug crews.

There are 14 officer jobs on the four salvage vessels starting work on the next phase of the salvage operation – and none of them will be offered to New Zealanders, says NZMSG president Lew Henderson.

“The foreign company planning to carry out the next phase of the Rena salvage has no intention of seeking suitably qualified New Zealanders for these jobs,” says Lew. “We believe this is totally unacceptable and have raised strong objections to Immigration NZ, asking it not to issue work visas for officer/master positions.”

The Rena is a Monrovian (West African) registered containership that struck the Astrolabe Reef in the early hours of October 5, 2011.

After spilling oil and containers, the ship broke up with the stern section later submerging completely.

from the submerged aft section, is about to begin.

Resolve Salvage and Fire employs about 56 per cent local employees on the Rena project, and 44 per cent overseas employees, says project manager for Resolve, Ajay Prasad. When specialist sub-contractors, mainly dive crews are included, the number of New Zealand-based workers is higher, says the salvage company in a statement.

“Conducting an operation where a wreck is not on a flat bottom surface – but wedged on the side of an underwater mountain in a powerful body of water – is both difficult and dangerous,” says Ajay.

The current task to prepare for the removal of the house involves an extensive diving operation down as far as the 50 metre legal limit in New Zealand waters, says Ajay. “There is no margin for error here.

“The people we employ and the specialist equipment we’re using requires specific skills and the necessary time and experience on the job. The choices we’re making here are about protecting human health and safety,” says Ajay.

Resolve Salvage and Fire will employ eight further union members, as part of its recent negotiations with union officials.

Safe and supportive hub Five years of planning and a hard-fought campaign to attract funding is seeing the creation of Te Puke’s first Youth Hub – offering a place for young people to go after school.

Run as an offshoot of the Te Puke Community Care Trust, the centre is opening its doors to be a positive place for students.

Trust manager Anne Kershaw says 50 young people have registered, and interest is growing. “One of the social workers just spoke to the teachers at the high school, and there was a lot of interest.”

The project was initiated by former Te Puke woman Heather Firth five years ago, who had a vision for a youth drop-in centre.

But following problems attracting funding for the LiftUp Trust behind the project, Anne decided to pursue the idea through the long-established Community Care Trust.

“It’s very difficult to attract funding as a new organisation,” says Anne, who discovered the need for a safe place for young

people after-school from a survey of young people in 2011.

The youth hub is only open to those registered for it – which requires parental approval. It offers eight computers for students to do homework, take part in quizzes, or other ‘old-fashioned fun’ like jigsaws.

“It’s giving them somewhere to go where they feel safe and they can get involved in all these activities. A lot of these kids don’t have these opportunities at home.”

Anne says the centre is helping young people who need professional support by offering access to a nurse, counsellor, social worker, career advisor, or lawyer if needed, while those assessed as at-risk are assigned a trained mentor.

A grant from the recent Tauranga Police CIB charity luncheon will be used to buy a van to transport young people to activities Te Puke Youth Hub counsellor Mary Wanhill and venues, which Anne says “is another shows youth worker Joseph Walsh around the challenge for many in Te Puke”.

Human bones found

Contractors laying ultra-fast broadband cable along Oceanbeach Rd in Mount Maunganui have discovered human bones.

The remains are in a hole at the beginning of the driveway to number 154 Oceanbeach Rd, with the discovery being made about 1pm Wednesday. Police at the scene say it will be four days before an archaeologist can inspect them.

New Year's murder trial

The trial of a Waihi teenager accused of fatally stabbing an ex-pat Kiwi on New Year’s Day wrapped up this week.

Israel Kaihau, 19, was on trial in the High Court in Hamilton charged with the murder of 64-year-old Robert Murray Wilkinson.

Wilkinson, also known as Murray, was holidaying at Waihi Beach when he was stabbed in the head and neck about 1am on January 1 this year. He was taken to Waikato Hospital where he died two days later on January 3.

Kaihau is alleged to have stabbed the victim, puncturing his brain, after being asked to leave the Beach Rd property where Wilkinson and his wife, Luise, were staying in a caravan.

By-election after resignation Newly elected Western Bay of Plenty District councillor Graeme Crossman is resigning due to family business pressures, forcing a by-election in the Maketu-Te Puke ward.

The Kiwi 360 tourism business operator was elected as one of four councillors to the MaketuTe Puke Ward, with 1514 votes on October 12’s local body elections.

Graeme says he is resigning due to unexpected business developments, rendering it impossible to commit the necessary time and contribution for the position.

The estimated cost, of both the Maketu-Te Puke ward and Waihi Beach Community board by-elections next February, is $28,700 plus GST, or $2.10 plus GST per elector.

Boy injured in hit and run Young Tauranga student Zane Warburton is recovering after being hit by a car as he cycled to school on Thursday.

The 12-year-old was knocked off his bike as he turned from Courtney Rd onto Fraser St. The Tauranga Intermediate student was cycling to school about 7.45am when the driver of a red sedan overtook him, clipping his front bicycle tyre with the left rear side of the vehicle.

The 12-year-old suffered grazes to his chin, both knees and elbow after hitting the ground.

An issue of age

Oceanside Family Chiropractic

The Weekend Sun incorrectly stated Bill Faulkner’s age last week, a mistake for which we unreservedly apologise.

Adding almost a decade to anyone’s age is not something to be taken lightly, especially in the field of politics where perceptions can so easily swing on for a few more, or fewer, orbits of the earth around the sun.

Bill’s not the oldest councillor in the Bay, though he may have been one of the more mature elected members on last term’s Tauranga City Council.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s chairman John Cronin says he’s not 73 either, but he won’t say how old he is; and Philip Sherry, who is generally reckoned to be the oldest of the current councillors, is notoriously coy about stating his age.

All readily and publicly available knowledge has young Philip starting work for the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation in 1960 – 53 years ago.

But there’s no record of how old he was when he started. He could be close to Bill’s fictitious age of 73, or even older if the NZBC wasn’t his first job after leaving school.

He may be young – but don’t mess with 12-year-old Paki Ormsby. He has just won his first international gold medal in the 2013 Pan Pacific Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championship.

Paki and his dad Jamahl travelled to Melbourne, Australia this month to compete in the international competition where Paki won first place for NZ Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Two and a half years ago Paki’s enthusiasm for the

sport encouraged Jamahl and mum Diana Rutten to start a gym for their son to train in.

Professional fighting has been no kick-back for Paki, who was driven to Auckland three times a week to train with former world champion Lance Campbell in preparation for the championship.

The rest of the week was filled training with Michael Apaapa at his parents’ fight club.

Bay firefighters ready to help Two Bay of Plenty rural firefighters remain eagerly on standby to lend a trans-Tasman hand as their colleagues tirelessly battle fires blazing through New South Wales.

The Australian state is currently being ravaged by about 62 separate fires, 13 of which are uncontained, with 2000 firefighters battling fires that now stretch along a 300km front.

Extra firefighters are being brought in from Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania to relieve exhausted crews.

Australian media reports 120,000hectares are currently burning with more than 1000 firefighters working through the nights.

Western Bay Moana Rural Fire Authority principal rural fire officer Barry Low says they are not being instructed to send anyone at this stage – but two willing

firefighters are on standby.

It is a slim, yet hopeful, chance they will be called upon, says Barry.

“Certainly it’s a chance that any firefighter would jump at if he or she got it,” says Barry.

“The work experience and the ability to work on a large fire like that; we don’t get that sort of event like that here in New Zealand. The experience they would come back with would be great.”

In the Blue Mountains region more than 80 properties are confirmed to have been destroyed and 37 damaged by blazes.

As conditions worsen and temperatures expected to reach the mid-30s there is concern three fires could join to create what has been described as a "mega fire” to the west of Sydney.

Building a sense of community and fun is the aim behind a new ‘Stranded Sundays’ initiative, which will see The Strand closed to traffic one Sunday of the month, beginning this weekend.

This Sunday, the inaugural event will see The Strand closed from Devonport Rd to Harrington St to allow children and adults to lie about, read a book, and relax together.

Downtown Tauranga spokesperson Sally Cooke says Stranded Sundays is very much a place-making event.

“It’s just about creating a nice space down on The Strand, where people can just come along and relax and catch up with friends.”

The road will be closed from 11am to 8pm one Sunday each month.

“Bring the children, bring the scooters, bring down their toys, because the road is closed it will be a nice, safe environment.

“There will be some activity bins on the streets with chalk and skipping ropes and hula hoops, and things like that, so children can just come a treat it as a play zone.”

Sally says Stranded Sundays is about making a safe, lovely atmosphere where people with or without children can come down and catch up with friends “and enjoy a coffee or something”.

“It was an initiative that, when the waterfront opening happened, there was a discussion about how nice it was – and we noticed a couple of children playing handball on The Strand.

“We are not staging any specific activities, rather just creating a space for people to get together with friends and enjoy the atmosphere.”

There will be a Mainstreet Book Exchange Lounge with bean bags set up.

A busy winter honing their skills has surf life savers primed and ready to pay careful attention to the usual throng of beach-goers on the Bay’s beaches this summer.

This weekend marks the start of the Surf Life Saving New Zealand patrol period with volunteer life savers staking their claim in the sand with the distinctive red and yellow flags.

The volunteer period runs every weekend from Labour weekend to April. Paid life guards will be patrolling Monday to Friday from mid-December through to February.

Mount Surf Club general manager Glenn Bradley says

after a busy winter up skilling its members the club is excited to be heading back into the summer patrol season.

“We had a real focus on the first aid up-skilling process and have bought through about 20 who have been working towards their various IRB qualifications.”

In a new move this year the club is increasing its rostered patrols from five to six, something which will keep the life guards fresh throughout the season.

Omanu Surf Club is pushing out their number of patrols, from six to seven, with a number of recently qualified life guards stepping up to the mark.

“We have got good numbers with patrols or members lining up for the weekends. It should be

another good year with the water temperatures and people already swimming on the beach,” says Omanu Surf Club director of surf life saving Mike Swan.

“It’s just a product of the number of young members we have got coming onboard.”

Life guards on the East Coast made 27 rescues during the unscheduled winter season – something which is far too high, says Surf Life Saving New Zealand eastern regional manager Chris Emmett.

“Just find a beach that is patrolled really and listen to the advice of life guards. If they are unsure then go down to a beach that is patrolled and swim between the flags,” says Chris.

Kites to crowd Waihi Beach sky

A spectacular visual treat will engulf Waihi Beach’s skyline as Let’s Fly A Kite returns for its third year on Sunday.

Coordinator John Russell, a New Zealand Kite Association member, says the free family event offers “super spectacular action” with New Zealand’s only master multiple stunt kite-flyer performing and owners of some of the country’s most impressive kites attending.

The event caters to the Waihi Beach community, and its Labour Weekend visitors, who are invited to “make, buy, borrow or grab a kite – bring it to Waihi Beach and fly it alongside others”.

This event’s growth – about 200 participated last year – has John expecting an exciting occasion “but it is weather dependent, as we need

some breeze to fly the bigger kites”.

Hamiltonian Marcel LaGrand, who is a multiple stunt kite-flying specialist, will perform. He’s the only person in New Zealand to master flying three stunt kites at once, says John. “[The skill] is where three kites are flown simultaneously to present a breathtaking display. It can be likened to Air Force aerobatics.”

Marcel, who performs with his self-made ‘Tui’ kites, says he’ll be delighted to show off his skills.

“It has taken Marcel hundreds of hours of constant practice and many broken carbon spars and ripped kites to perfect his routine,” says John.

Aucklander Peter Clark’s spectacular range of kites will be on-show.

“When his small bear kites reach a big bear kite, they parachute down – much to the delight of children,” says John, who reckons Peter owns and flies “some of New Zealand’s most impressive show kites”.

It’s the bomb!

Nutty spread wins

A nutty spread has won a Tauranga Girls’ College group the top prize in the Young Enterprise Scheme 2013. The group, called Soar Enterprise, of seven Year 13 students are the Tauranga regional winners of YES – announced by Tauranga Chamber of Commerce last week. The win comes from putting forward their idea of a hazelnut and peanut butter spread they named ‘Collide’.

The students now travel to Wellington to present their idea to a panel of judges, and are in line for a national award.

On Saturday, he hopes to combine the two by holding a world record attempt for the biggest mass bomb-dive at Tauranga Bridge Marina – with the hope of at least 300 people joining in.

“Over the summer, me and my mates used to all drop ‘bombs’ down at Salisbury [Wharf ]. It was crack-up stuff – and I got thinking about it a few months ago that we should try to set a mass bomb record.”

Tauranga Boys College student has been thinking just how good it would be to set a Guinness world record – so it seemed the perfect solution.

Research of a Guinness world record book found no dive-bombing record, but to make into the famous record of achievements Louis was told they needed to have at least 100 people involved before being even considered.

“But I’m sure we can get way more than that – I think we should get 300 easy, maybe 400,” says Louis, who with the support of The Edge radio station is spreading the message about the record attempt.

“I think everyone has probably seen the Guinness [World] Records book and won-

dered how they could get in there, well this is your chance,” says Louis, who is enthusiastically encouraging others to get involved.

“It will be a great start to summer and you can be a part of history.”

Louis wants “anyone and everyone” to join in the record attempt – which he reckons will be done in a Mexican wave style. Now Louis has his fingers crossed for a gorgeous day, “so there is no excuse for not joining in”.

The attempt will be held on Tauranga Bridge Marina’s southern breakwater pier, with registration from 10.30am, and the world record attempt at midday. Registrations can be made on The Edge Facebook

Roses blooming for Red Cross A sea of red is flooding Tauranga streets today as roses are sold for Red Cross’ annual Red Rose Day. The Red Cross’ major fundraising event is in its 18th year and sees roses available for a minimum $2 donation.

Bouquets of red roses were delivered to businesses who pre-ordered on Wednesday, while yesterday a group of about 50 volunteers prepared another 4000 single, fresh, wrapped, long-steam red roses at the Red Cross Service

Centre in Greerton.

These are now being sold by 120 volunteers on the streets of Tauranga and Katikati.

Events co-ordinator Heather Dabrowski says this is a major fundraiser and promotion for New Zealand Red Cross in the Western Bay and provides valuable financial assistance to support the humanitarian work of the organisation.

“We want to say a huge thanks to Kiwis, and acknowledge that while we’re a small country, we’ve got a big heart and we make a difference when it’s needed most. New Zealand has a big reputation that’s well deserved within the International Red Cross Movement.

The resourceful 18-year-old, who passed away in August, set about finding a mobility scooter to hire – ultimately prompting More Mobility owner Russell Thomas to donate him one –now the scooter is being Jono in his passed on for others. scooter.

Reflecting on the decision to donate the scooter, Russell says he was struck by Jono’s resourcefulness to find a way to go out with his mother while receiving treatment in Auckland.

As result, Russell became “determined to help”.

“The elation that both Jono and [his mother] Karen showed, once we told them, made it more than worthwhile from our perspective,” says Russell.

Jono’s sister Cassie says her brother was so excited to get the scooter and go more than the 50 metres he could walk, he was

always determined to give it to others when he no longer needed it – so the family are donating it to Canteen for other cancer sufferers to use.

“He was saying when he gets better, he would give it to others to use. It was really important for Jono to help others – all he wanted to do was to help other people.”

Canteen Bay of Plenty youth worker Charlie Whiteley says seeing how the scooter “changed everything” for Jono before he died, she hoped it would make a big difference for many others.

“Just looking at Jono’s experience with the scooter; it gave him his mobility back and gave him so much more.

He was such a wonderful young man, always helping other,” says Charlie.

The scooter will be mainly used by Canteen in Auckland, but will be brought to Tauranga whenever there is need for it.

From 10.30am yesterday the steak, mince and cheese pie was made available from the 11th Avenue outlet. It retails for $4.50 a pie.

The city’s 11th Avenue branch is the first of three Western Bay of Plenty outlets to sell the pie, with Mount Maunganui and Papamoa to begin selling the pie in coming weeks.

The launch in Tauranga has pleased the 29-yearold from Whakatane, who has been single-handedly collecting signatures throughout the North Island to bring back the golden pie restaurant.

Grant visited 11th Avenue McDonald’s yesterday to celebrate its return. “It’s definitely great to see it make a comeback close to where I grew up.”

Grant remembers celebrating “numerous” birthdays at his favourite restaurant when it was situated at Taupo’s lake front – where he grew up.

He has been following pie launches across the country and last week purchased 20 pies at once from Te Awamutu McDonald’s.

“Like everyone else I want to see the pie stay here. I want to bring the brand back.”

McDonald’s Tauranga franchisee John Warder says the launch of the pie is “almost like bringing back New Zealand’s heritage”.

“It’s bringing back an old Kiwi favourite. McDonald’s were trying to honour that iconic brand.”

It follows the successful trial of the re-launched pie in selected restaurants earlier this year. McDonald’s now says the steak, mince n cheese pie will be sold in 107 McDonald’s restaurants by the end of the year and the majority of restaurants by mid-2014. By Zoe Hunter

Always the Adams’ house

The Weekend Sun is profiling some of Tauranga’s historic places dotted around the city. This week reporter Zoe Hunter looks at a house more than 130 years old.

The Taiparoro Mansion Guesthouse has been owned by four families since the late 1800s – but Tauranga resident Olive Smyth remembers it as the Adams’ house.

According to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, John Cuthbert Adams built the home on Fifth Ave in 1882 and later extended it to comfortably house his 10 children.

Miss Bertha Adams and her brother Lionell were the last of the Adams children to live in the home – and 92-year-old Olive remembers them clearly.

Olive lives in her home built by one of the Adams brothers in the late 1930s, about 200 metres from the Adams’ house.

For 10 years Olive visited Miss Adams – and Miss Adams visited Olive.

“When she came here she always wore her hat and her gloves…and when I went to have a cup of tea with her the silver tea pot came out.”

There was a wire fence at the edge of the Adams’ property and a barberry hedge, which Olive remembers Lionell Adams clipping regularly.

Charity journey A young family of four, attempting to travel to Cambodia to help children at risk of prostitution, is seeking funding

Tauranga resident Olive Smyth and her daughter Christine Richardson enjoying tea, just how Olive and Miss Adams used to in the early 1900s.

In 1973 the Adams’ house was purchased by Mr A.K Garrity, who altered it by installing a larger window in the living room, French doors in the sitting room, and adding a balcony to an upstairs room.

Mr Garrity sold the house to Mr and Mrs Wallis in 1989. The Wallis family also made changes to modernise the home before Kevin and Lois Kelly purchased the home in 1990.

The Kelly family provided bed and breakfast accommodation in the home until 2001. Today, the building operates as a guesthouse – the Taiparoro Mansion Guesthouse.

Despite all of its owners – to Olive property it is still Miss Adams’ house.

“It was always be the Adams’ house to us.”

Baby steps best Tauranga Girls’ College students are coming to the end of a “world-first” baby watching programme, which has helped them become better prepared for motherhood.

Twenty Year 13 early childhood education students have been observing a mother and baby’s relationship in weekly sessions since February, through the Baby-watching Against Anxiety and Aggression for Sensitivity and Empathy programme.

Clinical psychologist and programme facilitator Tanzi Bennison runs the programme, which aims to enhance sensitive social behaviour while reducing aggression and anxiety within relationships.

Given most of the girls are considering a career in ECE – and teenage girls are “our future mothers” – Tanzi says the classes try to enhance sensitivity and empathy among the student participants.

This happens by students directly observing the formation of the attachment relationship – the emotional bond

between a mother and her six-week-old baby during the first year of its life.

“It’s actually quite a rare opportunity really. The girls really see the reality of what it’s like to be a mother,” says Tanzi.

“They see that relationship develop and unfold before their eyes.”

Being a mother-of-two, Tanzi realises the importance of developing a strong mother-baby connection.

“That strengthened my commitment to the importance of attachment…and how important it is to get it right in the first three years.”

Initially developed by German Dr Karl Heinz Brisch, the BASE programme was brought to New Zealand by Psychotherapist Augustina Driessen. Previously run in Bay of Plenty kindergartens and pre-schools and primary schools – Tanzi says this is the first time it has been offered to teenage girls.

The programme ends October 31 – and to celebrate the girls are hosting a birthday party for the baby they have been observing throughout the year.

With enough funding, Tanzi hopes the FABS team charitable trust can make the programme an annual event at the

Born to be a fighter A former Tauranga professional boxer has written his first book, which encourages men to stop hiding behind a “wall of masculinity” and reach out to their families and friends for help.

After a 27-year boxing career– including seven as a professional fighter – Denny Enright says recovering from a life threatening red nose pit bull attack and depression are the “two toughest fights” of his life.

“If I didn’t have boxing I would have died the day of the dog attack.”

Today, the 65-year-old is releasing his first book ‘Born to be a Fighter’ – a book he hopes will encourage men to ask for help.

“If someone can learn from it; then it could stop someone from falling in the same hole that I fell in. “We need to front up. We need to ask for help,” says Denny.

“Life experiences happen for a reason. It’s how you use them.”

Rural schools speed safety trial Two Western Bay of Plenty primary schools have joined the NZ Transport Agency’s rural schools road safety programme.

Speed limits past the schools will be reduced during drop-off and pick-up times: • The speed outside Pyes Pa School will be reduced from 80 km/h to 40 km/h

Reducing the travel speeds around key times in the school day will decrease the risk of serious crashes occurring and will provide a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists.

What is a variable speed limit sign?

By the end of the year the trial electronic speed signs are expected to be installed at 23 high risk rural schools around NZ. The duration of the trial is expected to be up to two years and the Transport Agency will conduct regular monitoring of driver behaviour.

• It is an electronic sign which allows the speed limit to be changed locally at agreed times and to agreed speed limits.

The Transport Agency urges motorists to be cautious around all schools especially during school pick-up and drop-off times.

• The speed outside Pahoia School will be reduced from 100 km/h to 70 km/h

An urgent appeal is going out for rostered volunteers to help at Waipuna Hospice’s bustling depot in Fraser Cove, and the newly expanded Mount Maunganui store.

While a busy depot receiving plenty of donations for the three hospice stores is a great thing – fundraising manager Trish Rae says they’re desperate for help to sort and price the goods.

“We are particularly keen to attract fit and active men, who can commit to a half day each week to assist with pick-ups and deliveries.”

While volunteering is often tarred with the brush of needing to be elderly, female – or both – longtime hospice volunteer Warwick

MacKay highly recommends it.

“Being involved as a volunteer in the Hospice community keeps me in contact with lots of people and brings me a tremendous amount of satisfaction.

“I enjoy being involved in such a worthy, positive organisation, who value the contribution and efforts of their volunteers.”

A volunteer since 2005, Warwick has also encouraged his family to get involved.

“Charlotte my wife is a Hospice volunteer and my teenage grandsons, Glen and Adam, have both done voluntary work for Waipuna.”

Trish says Warwick’s efforts are amazing. “If only we could clone him.” She hopes to attract more men like him, and women to assist in a variety of tasks on a rostered

basis, including collecting, sorting and pricing goods at the depot, and making sure items are safe to on-sell.

Volunteers bring a tremendous range of skills and knowledge gained from their working life, “which are very valuable to our organisation”, says Trish.

The expansion of the Mount store, officially re-opened this weekend, means it also needs more volunteers.

Business manager James Turner says the expansion coincides with the shop’s new look – which is following a worldwide trend of hospice stores becoming fashionable, department-like shops.

With a musically-minded husband on board, Kaz is hosting a charity concert next weekend to raise money for better medical supplies and treatment for the village.

Kaz travelled to the southeast African country to meet 17-yearold Patrick Kachiswe, who Kaz has sponsored for almost 10 years.

While there, she noticed a “scary” shortage of medication in the village of Mikolongwe.

“Patients are being operated on without any anaesthetic.

“That’s just a horrific thought.”

Kaz will donate the money raised to World Vision, with proceeds going towards providing Mikolongwe Health Centre better access to medication.

Brendan’s affordable swimming push revival and major water leak problems.

Pool manager Elizabeth Milsom says she is already seeing many regular swimmers return and is hoping it will encourage a lot more Te Puke people to swim.

The return of warmer weather has Tauranga Independent MP Brendan Horan reviving his campaign for lower swimming pool charges, with hopes to present a petition to the Tauranga City Council before Christmas.

“The swimming club is returning from Pongakawa, where it’s been going, and others have been going to Baywave – but a lot of people just haven’t been

The father of two says Baywave’s charge of $4.80 per child is making it too expensive for many families to teach their children to swim.

Brendan first launched his petition in March this year, successfully collecting 5000 signatures, but he wants “tens of thousands” before presenting to council.

The petition calls for the child entry charge to be dropped to a gold coin at all publicly-owned pools in Tauranga.

“We’ve got a new council so hopefully they are receptive to it.

We’re surrounded by water so it’s critical local government make

it accessible for children to learn water safety,” says Brendan.

“Learning to swim proficiently is a critical life skill. But how can we garner civic pride when many residences cannot afford the fee to enter our council swimming pool?”

Bay Leisure and Events CEO Gary Dawson, who oversees the running of all council-owned pools, says the organisation firmly believes in making swimming affordable and is doing so by offering children fees at $1.68 for a 10-card multiple entry at Greerton, Otumoetai and Memorial Park pools, or a standard $1.90 entry fee.

Gary says fees are higher at Baywave because as a bigger facility it is more expensive to run. They are doing what they can to make learning to swim more affordable, with a school learn to swim package of entry and a lesson for $3.80.

Fees were dictated by costs and funding, but Gary believes the council takes its responsibility of providing accessible swimming seriously.

The petition can be signed at Brendan’s Mount Maunganui office.

Enjoying protected fun in the sun The weather this month has given us some gorgeous hot, sunny days. At this time of the year, parents need to be thinking about how best to protect their child’s delicate skin from the sun.

Newborns and infants are particularly vulnerable to the damaging rays of the sun. Children of this age should be kept out of the sun, as their skin contains little melanin and is too sensitive for the application of sunscreen.

UV rays can damage a child’s delicate skin in a matter of minutes, so try to cover your infant’s skin as much as possible with loose fitting clothes and a broad-brimmed hat.

Children six to 12 months can use sunscreen. Apply an SPF30+ broad spectrum sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours, or after water play. Minimise exposure

to the sun during the peak hours – 11am-4pm.

Toddlers and pre-school children require a little more thought and effort. It is important to educate your child to be sun-safe, encouraging them to seek the shade during those peak hours.

It should become a habit for young children to wear sun protective clothing. There are also products specifically designed for babies and toddlers to keep their sunnies in place.

Finally, be the best example for your children you can.

Demonstrate sun safety and healthy sunscreen habits for your family so everyone is in the habit of applying sunscreen.

Katikati’s Amazing Iris Garden opens this Labour Weekend – offering a six-week window to view this year’s iris flowers in full bloom.

Owner Wendy Begbie says while her 1.5 acres of irises are tended to yearround, they are only in bloom for six weeks – so gardening enthusiasts need to get in fast.

The commercial nursery boasts more than 1200 iris varieties in multiple colours, from New Zealand and overseas. It specialises in high quality bearded varieties including tall, medium and dwarf iris plants. “It’s an amazing display,” says Wendy.

She says the garden has many avid followers, who attend every year – but it’s about letting people know they are now open.

“There’s such a small window of opportunity – it’s important people know we are open – and

that people who haven’t visited us before know to come take a look.”

A self-confessed iris-fan, Wendy has been growing the flowers for 13 years, and operating the garden from its Katikati location for six years.

“They’re just so beautiful and they’re a low maintenance flower – it’s really easy to get hooked on them.”

Orders for iris flowers can be made at the garden or online. The flowers are delivered bare-rooted in December and February, but payment needs to be made at time of order to ensure supply of the plant.

And for those who are enchanted by the flowers, but don’t want to place a large order, potted plants are available for purchase, says Wendy.

Annual art exhibition returns for 13th year ART Waikino is returning for its 13th year this Labour Weekend – with a brand new category to boot.

The annual art exhibition in Waikino’s Victoria Hall includes the usual categories – painting, craft and photography – as well as the addition of outdoor sculpture.

This event is Victoria Hall’s major fundraiser for 2013 and Newmont Waihi Gold is sponsoring the supreme

award of $500 for the overall winner.

Plus, O’Hagan Vision Care is sponsoring the $250 first prize for the best painting.

This year, due to space limitations at the hall, the sculptures will be on display at The Falls Retreat at Owharoa, where interesting creations are expected to blend well with the retreat’s surroundings. The retreat is also sponsoring this section of the exhibition.

Artists involved are limited only by their imaginations; and the only condition for sculptures is that they are weatherproof.

This year’s ART Waikino also includes be a special exhibition of Graham Bell’s paintings. Graham used to live on Old Waitekauri Rd at ‘Boogie Down’ and older residents will remember his paintings – many of which carried The 2012 ART Waikino an environmental supreme winner theme.

International artworks on display Internationally acclaimed original works from artists including Picasso and Colin McCahon are in Tauranga for a one-off exhibition.

The touring Gow Langsford Gallery at Rydal House in Grey Street features an array of international and New Zealand artists including a $245,000 North Canterbury McCahon painting.

Gallery co-owner Gary Langsford says standout attractions are original etchings from Picasso as well as Charles Goldie’s 1911 oil on wood panel ‘Drowsy’, estimated to be worth about $260,000.

The top end of the market is represented by the Colin McCahon works, with the larger North Canterbury oil on canvas landscape a standout, along with a smaller, unique black and white McCahon Caltex, valued at about $68,000.

Other well-known artists include

Australian Dale Frank, and Karl Maughan – a garden landscape painter.

Gary believes now is a suitable time for a gallery visit to Tauranga as the city’s population is growing and maturing, with more people collecting and taking an interest in artworks.

“Tauranga has changed, it’s a much bigger city. I think now is the time – there is definitely an opportunity to run something like this here once or twice a year.”

Helpful festive hints support charity ‘Wow’. That’s the first comment people make when they enter the Christmas Heirloom Company shop.

One customer has pointed out Christmas is only nine Saturdays away. And so, people are coming in to gain inspiration for their own special Christmas festivities. Many are getting in early to get the pick of the most amazing range of decorations, collectables and trimmings.

Marilyn Hamlyn, owner of the store, has some great ideas to help charities fundraise heading into the silly season. Held at the Christmas Heirloom Company shop on Devonport Rd, she is hosting fundraising evenings during November, with demonstrations on how to decorate trees, wreaths and centrepieces. Find out the no-tangle way to hang lights on the tree and share new advent ideas with your children.

Marilyn will show you how to do all of this during a 30-45 minute demonstration while you enjoy refreshments and relax in the company of your friends, with the added bonus of fundraising for your chosen charity.

“It’s a fun fundraiser where everyone gets into the spirit of Christmas,” says Marilyn.

Charities, including sport clubs, community groups and kindergartens, have enjoyed selling tickets to the evenings and attending them in the past – and Marilyn is encouraging groups to book again this year.

Marilyn and manager Jo have extensive knowledge on Christmas decorating and says these nights are the perfect opportunity “to have fun, learn a few tricks of the trade and shop at your leisure”.

The evenings run on weeknights during November from Monday to Thursday starting from either 5.30pm or 7pm.

Marilyn is also running wreath-making tutorials every Saturday in November, starting November 7.

Sporting sensation Tauranga residents have the chance to witness what is fast becoming a global phenomenon in sporting history at the Mount CrossFit National Team Competition this Labour Weekend.

The title of the “fittest team in the country” is up for grabs again as Mount CrossFit organisers Tim PatonTapsell, Luke McGruer and John Templeton’s second large scale national competition gets underway.

The event will see teams of four complete physically demanding tasks, from push-ups and pull-ups to lifting massive weights and manoeuvring gigantic tyres.

A significant addition to this year’s event is an outdoor workout where competitors will complete a 2km beach sprint and a 200m ocean swim.

Seventy teams of two men and two women competed for the inaugural title last year. This year more than 330 competitors from across the country, including

two teams from Australia, have signed up for round two. Tim expects more than 1000 supporters and spectators from across the country to attend at ASB Baypark.

“It is by far in a way the biggest CrossFit event in New Zealand. It’s got an atmosphere similar to the Wellington Sevens.”

The event runs 9.30am to 5pm on Saturday and starts again on Sunday at 9.30am with competition finals starting at 3pm.

In keeping with her family’s tradition of bowling success – Tauranga South’s Marilyn McLeod is heading to the Trusts New Zealand Open 2013 fresh from a gold medal win at a recent tournament.

The 64-year-old Tauranga South Club bowler competed in the Heartland Bank Women’s Premier Open Singles tournament in Auckland on September 28-29 and brought home a cup and $1000 for her efforts. This is the second time Marilyn has won this event.

From November 6, she’s competing in the nine-day Trust NZ Open 2013 in Auckland, where she’ll be up against some of the country’s top bowlers in the singles, pairs and triples sections.

Marilyn began playing indoor bowls in 1962 – but turned to outdoor bowling in 1987.

Her family are keen bowlers – both indoor and outdoor.

And you could say some of their success as provincial representatives – for Whanganui, Taranaki, Wellington and Hawkes Bay – has rubbed off on her.

“I just have been brought up around bowls. It was just something I always have been able to compete in.”

“I’ve never been a tennis player, or anything like that,” says Marilyn.

Her accolades include 2009 runner up in the triples section at 2012’s NZ Open, and she’s the 2011 singles champion.

In June, Marilyn competed in the National Club Championship Finals in Invercargill where she and her team mates, Robyn Davis, Robyn Matthews-Hunt and Pauline Bowler, won the championship title.

Marilyn credits the sport for its social aspects, where friends are made and techniques are passed on to beginners by the older generations.

“People are very keen to pass on information. We are never too old to learn.”

There’s no place like home When it comes to reviewing a selection of delicious British products – who better for the job that an England-born foodie – craving a taste of home.

September 1977 and an Air NZ DC-10 lands in Auckland. Among the passengers was myself, my little sister and Mum and Dad. I was 14 and had lived all those years in England, my birthplace.

We left behind some negatives: the cold and wet weather, graffiti – the Welsh. But we also left family, winter Christmases, Spitfires and Miss Elizabeth Tipping.

Many years later, few things make me feel like I’m back home: the odd song on the radio, watching the 3 Lions lose at the World Cup. But most effective of all is a trip to the local English food shop.

So a weekend visit from my daughter Abby, already anticipated with relish, was made even more splendid when she arrived bearing a box full of goodies from Pommies’ for me to sample.

Pommies’ has just opened its store in Papamoa – with shelves lined with some of the best British products in existence.

Let’s get started

First and obvious choice for my culinary return to childhood was tinned Ambrosia Custard for Friday night pudding. Yes,

Butterkist Toffee Popcorn. The Galaxy chocolate made another appearance too, drawing many positive comments.

Scrumptious

custard in a tin! I lived off the stuff as a child and it tasted just like the tetra-pack custard we can buy here only much, much better.

Next up, accompanied by the obligatory cup of tea, was Galaxy Chocolate. Creamy and decadent – and palpably English.

Breakfast on Saturday was Frosties cereal. Tony the Tiger hadn’t aged a day and they were as Gr-r-reat as I remember them four decades ago. Morning coffee was sweetened with some Fox’s Party Rings biscuits.

A hot and sunny afternoon made for thirsty bodies but the perfect beverage was on hand in the form of Dandelion and Burdock. Abby and her friend were very approving and wondered out loud what an interesting ‘mixer’ it would make. Pickled Onion-flavoured Monster Munch was a welcome accompaniment.

Sunday breakfast revealed my favourite of our English treats in the form of Jordans Country Crisp with Chunky Nuts.

Absolutely nothing artificial in this salubrious, scrumptious cereal. I wanted to have it for lunch

too.

Sunday evening’s hot drink was Aero Hot Choc. Sweet, smooth and soothing. A perfect way to conclude my brief but very satisfying trip ‘home’.

A fun experience and one which I can certainly recommend to all ex-pats, even those from Wales.

And inquisitive locals too of course. Get sampling!

Sheryl says the fuel supply firm decided to get involved after team member Andy Fullerton, whose son was treated at Starship, encouraged them to get involved.

“This is a very humbling experience and is a great way to help people who are facing really tough times with their youngsters.

It just makes you realise just how valuable a place it is.”

Sheryl says the staff volunteer for the cook-up – which this week included chicken satay sticks, steak, vegetable medley salads, ice cream and fruit salad – while donations from Mount New World, Cols Butchery, Bethlehem Coachlines, Taylor Brothers and BP helped cover costs.

A child who is seriously disabled will need someone to take care of them; and really, there are only two options – pay someone to do it, leaving you and your spouse or partner to continue working – or one of you makes call to give up work and do it yourself.

Both options are likely to cost thousands of dollars each month, either in expenses or lost income. Work and Income New Zealand benefits might be payable, but are usually very modest. The child disability allowance is less than $50 per week.

Some of the most frequent causes of permanent disability in children are severe head injury and loss of limbs due to motor vehicle accidents. If you are still not convinced bad things can happen to children, consider why we have Starship, a specialist hospital for children.

Driving future forward Shuttling cruise ship passengers to and from the Port of Tauranga will soon be done in classic style.

A 1962 J2 Bedford bus has been unregistered for the last 16 years but, thanks to Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s Bay Auto Service Centre, is undergoing an automotive makeover to be made roadworthy in time for the cruise season.

Owned by Classic Flyers, with the funding kindly provided by the Mackay Strathnaver Trust, the blue bus will soon be sign painted and spruced up.

Not only will the bus transport many of Classic Flyers’ volunteer members, and the Young Flyers YMCA children’s groups, but it will also spend an undoubtedly busy season bustling visitors, from the huge number of cruise ships visiting our port, about town.

In the meantime, the bus will be made mechanically sound and roadworthy by Stage 2 Automotive Engineering student Alan Scadden, under supervision of the automotive group staff.

“This is a great learning experience for Alan outside his training and other work experience,” says automotive group leader Sean Squires.

“From researching compliance and inspection costs, to estimating repair costs for those, to experiencing different systems and finding repair or replacement parts, the industry experience he’s gaining is invaluable.”

The polytechnic’s auto service centre often work on vehicles associated with a number of local charities, offering free labour and only charging for parts. The connection with Classic Flyers has come about as a result of community foundation, The Acorn Foundation, informing those charities it is associated with of the service the polytechnic provides.

Kiwi ingenuity, and an independent ‘can do’, attitude are fast becoming global icons with New Zealand being named the best place to start a business worldwide.

According to World Bank, New Zealand is the number one place to start a business - a title Priority One chief executive Andrew Coker puts down to a peaceful way of life, nationally and in the Bay. Talking about Tauranga, Andrew says the area has an abundance of talented professionals in an array of professions. In the last two years Priority One has run a business campaign looking to attract the right established businesses to the city, with a designated website and promotional billboards in Auckland and Wellington – which is paying dividends, he says.

“Through our business attraction campaign we have come across a few businesses and people who have moved here, and just off the top of my head there are a couple of guys that have set up technology businesses here,” says Andrew.

“And why they have come here, in my perspective, is we have a good lifestyle, ultra-fast broadband and access to talented people; and I think that’s what makes the difference here. When you spin it down to Tauranga, it’s no different; we have got the balance of life here.”

Man’s rare donation saves a life A Tauranga man may have saved a life after donating his bone marrow – a rare occurrence for Tauranga’s Blood Donor Centre.

This is mostly because his youngest daughter received 10 blood transfusions in 2007 after being born 24 weeks and six days premature, weighing one pound and 11 ounces. Dave says giving blood is his way “to give something back”.

In 2009, the father-of-three was asked to join the New Zealand Bone Marrow Donor Registry, in an attempt to encourage more Maori and Pacific Islanders to join.

“This was not a hard decision for me, as my grandmother, who passed away in 2001, had Chronic Lymphonic Leukaemia. And to tell the truth, I thought I probably would never be a match anyway.”

But he is. Dave is a potential match for someone in Australia.

Following a run-down of what being a donor would entail, and further blood samples at Tauranga’s Blood Donor Centre, Dave was flown to Auckland Hospital to be shown how to inject himself with the drug that stimulates stem cell growth in his blood system.

On October 5, one week out from the collection, Dave began the process – two injections in the morning and one in the evening.

Dave says it was “painless and easy to do” but did come with side effects, including headaches, muscle and joint pain. “I also felt very tired and fatigued.”

three-and-a-half hours. Dave says the process is “easy to go through” and – if given the chance – he would

giving birth to her second daughter.

“I wanted to get back into shape and the only way I knew I would stick to it was to work towards something. I needed a goal,” says Elle.

“I started running about six weeks after my daughter was born. It took ages to stop feeling like a wobbly jelly and the first few weeks were absolute hell, 2km felt like an ultra-marathon.

“But I’ve stuck at it and now feel that all the hours of training have paid off.”

Elle also wants to raise awareness of Tauranga Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit after both her daughters, Grace, two, and Sophie, 16 months, spent time in the unit.

“Both my girls were premature babies, born around eight months. Grace was born on February 2, 2011, and had trouble feeding when she was born and so was in SCBU for a week.

“Sophie was born on June 6, 2012, and was a small baby at 5lbs 4oz and so was monitored very closely for four days.”

Elle can’t imagine surviving those first few weeks without the knowledge, advice and kindness of the nurses at SCBU. Elle recommends marathon running for anyone who wants a real challenge.

Shellfish from local beaches not safe to eat On-going monitoring of shellfish has found the levels of the toxin that causes Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning have increased. The Toi Te Ora – Public Health Service’s medical officer of health Dr Neil de Wet says there has been a health warning in place for some time now, “but monitoring has found that toxin levels are even higher right now and are similar to levels found around the time of the PSP outbreak in the Bay of Plenty late

last year”. Neil strongly advises against the collection of shellfish along the coastline from Tairua on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, south to Waihi Beach and along the Bay of Plenty coast to Whakatane Heads in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. The warning includes all harbours, estuaries and islands in this area and applies to mussels, pipi, tuatua, cockles, oysters, scallops as well as cat’s eyes, snails and kina (sea urchin). PSP

is caused by natural toxins that are produced by algal blooms and accumulate in shellfish, which feed on the algae. Shellfish containing PSP toxin do not look or taste any different from shellfish that are safe to eat. Cooking or freezing the shellfish does not remove the toxin.

“Please help us prevent another outbreak of PSP this year. Tell your family, whanau, friends and visitors that collecting and eating shellfish is not safe at present,” says Neil.

Defining awareness month What does Breast Cancer Awareness Month really mean for us here in the Bay of Plenty?

This month is the opportunity for our local breast cancer support service to raise awareness about breast cancer in the Bay of Plenty, alert people to their free service, and raise funds to support the service for the forthcoming year.

With many breast cancer charities in NZ, there is often some confusion as to who is who and where the money being donated is going.

Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga Trust started in 1991 as an independent charitable trust. A couple of local survivors recognised the need for peer support for those newly diagnosed with the disease in the Bay of Plenty.

When diagnosed, some very real fears and feelings arise for patients – and who better to talk to about these than someone who has experienced it themselves.

“We put these people together, offering practical advice as well as

emotional support, so they are well informed and never feel alone” says BCSS service coordinator Lea Lehndorf.

Research and education are the focus of the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation, based in Auckland.

Patient advocacy is the domain of the Breast Cancer Aotearoa Coalition.

There are many other independent support services working in, and for, their local communities. Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga is made up of local survivors supporting those newly diagnosed.

Mammography ‘saves lives’ Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women.

What is of great interest and importance, to those of us dealing with the diagnosis of breast cancer, is why women don’t have regular mammography – it saves lives.

The traditional mammogram remains the cornerstone for the detection of breast cancer in both screening and assessment of women who have a breast lump or other breast problem. Mammography is the only screening method proven to reduce cancer deaths. Although mammography alone does not

detect all breast cancers, new digital mammography equipment means better detection is now available.

Women with a strong family history and, or, with breasts they find difficult to interpret, may also be offered breast ultrasound, or other imaging, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Most breast lumps are not cancer, but make sure you have lumps checked completely with both mammography and ultrasound – as early detection is key. Women with mammographically dense breasts are at higher risk than those with fatty breasts.

reduced with the new digital machine. Although the free government mammography programme screens women from age 45-69 at two-yearly intervals, best practice suggests mammography should start from 40 years and be performed each year until your 60s, then continuing two-yearly checks until close to 80 years old, if you are fit and well.

Maintaining a healthy weight, through good diet and exercise, can help to reduce the risk of breast cancer – but the most important thing you can do is have regular mammography.

Enjoy a little indulgence from time to time SEAFOOD Sautéed scallops with mushrooms and mild curry cream

Ingredients 200g fresh scallops 2 spring onions Oil for cooking 150g field mushrooms ½ tsp chilli powder 1 tsp ground cumin ½ tsp turmeric 1 tsp ground fenugreek 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp brown sugar 2 splashes Worcestershire sauce 1 cup dry vermouth 1 cup cream 20g chilled butter Method Cut up the spring onion by chopping some of the white stalk into slices. Make decoration strips with the green part, and place into chilled water while preparing the dish.

In a stainless steel pot, sauté half of the white spring onion stalks for a few minutes, and add all of the spices. Slowly stir in the dry Vermouth and bring to the boil.

Light a flame to the alcohol; and flames should leap out of the pot. This will caramelise the ingredients, which do tend to burn the side of the pot, so use a scraper to keep sides clean.

Once the flames have gone, add brown sugar, a dash of Worcestershire sauce, and all of the cream; and reduce over a medium heat until thickened. Strain the sauce and set aside.

Sauté the mushrooms in a little oil until cooked and remove from pan. Add in the spring onions and scallops, just tossing them for about one minute. Quickly add the mushrooms back in with half of the sauce. Heat through and toss a few times; then serve onto the plate. Heat the rest of the sauce and whisk in the chilled butter to finish. Pour over the scallops and mushrooms. Serve immediately.

The two shellfish I love the most are Bluff oysters and fresh scallops, which are both deemed too expensive for everyday use.

But you may need a little indulgence, or that special celebration dinner; and then freshly prepared shellfish is hard to beat.

This week’s dish is inspired by a signature dish prepared by an innovative top chef about 15 years ago.

The German-born chef brought new dishes to Tauranga’s bland fine dining offerings at the time. Unfortunately, his menu was toned down and moderated by the owners – and therefore he felt stifled in his creativity. Eventually, a regular customer saw his potential and poached him.

This meant he could finally produce his own style of cuisine; something many inspired young chefs of today would love to do.

Restaurant owners often clash with chefs over choices on menus – and that’s why many menus mimic each other. They’re the same as what is sold at the local cafe; or from what’s his face down the road, who is selling heaps of them.

But the dining public has come to expect a lot more these days, than sad microwaved re-runs of a previous decade. So restaurant owners need to realise if they have the right chef; they will perform better, stay longer, and build up a reputation, if given carte blanch to create truly memorable meals – like this one from the chef who had a restaurant named after him.

Quick recipe ideas: Try tossing sliced strawberries through a chicken salad, drizzle over a tangy vinaigrette and finish with crumbled blue cheese.

Or for a sweet and savoury touch to roast chicken, fish or pork tenderloin, mix chopped strawberries through avocado salsa. This salsa combination is also great as a dip served with tortilla chips.

Historic homestead needs help

Steven finds father at 60 years old Steven Barlow never imaged at the age of 60 he would speak to his father for the very first time.

Steven Barlow is overjoyed to have found his father at age 60.

But the Katikati resident picked up the phone last month to hear the voice of his 84-year-old English father on the other side.

“I just started trembling,” says Steven, who is now making plans to visit the United Kingdom and meet his biological dad for the first time.

Admittedly ‘over the moon’, Steven wants to share his story in the hope of encouraging others still searching for their parents.

“I just wanted to let people know not to give up hope; it’s a joyous feeling.”

The details are still unclear, but Steven understands his mother asked his father to leave the day after Steven was born.

“Growing up as a boy, my dad

apparently tried to get in touch, but was always told no. You’d think it was a lost cause.”

His young mother eventually married another man, but never had any more children. She died in 1990.

Steven never looked for his dad, and it was his wife Sue who tracked the 84-year-old down during a trip to the UK last month.

“She said would have a look for him, but I didn’t expect anything.

“Then she called me and says to me, ‘I’ve got someone who wants to talk to you’. And he said ‘Hello son’.

Steven says his father is a picture of health, and looks like him.

He also found out about a halfbrother also living in the UK. Steven’s urgency to visit his newfound family was amplified last week when he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. It came as a shock – after spending years

as a carer looking after those with the disorder, Steven knows what may be coming.

But the news of his father is taking

precedence in his life and he is looking on the bright side.

“I’m pretty positive about it. You have to have hope.”

Online voting a disadvantage The election is over and the turnout was low.

Postal voting seems not to have found favour with any age group.

Sent out three weeks in advance, many voting papers probably got tossed out in the junk mail or were forgotten. Postal voting is not the answer, but talk of online voting could disadvantage older people, who may not use computers.

Those on superannuation alone cannot afford computers, not to mention the cost of broadband internet connection.

That is not to say many older people are not embracing the new technology, it is encouraging to hear of those in their eighties enjoying contact with families via an iPad.

But as older people are still the ones more likely to vote, a proven system, the local polling booth, should remain an option.

Voting systems should also be standardised.

The mixture of First Past The Post and Single Transferable Vote (for district health board elections) is very confusing, as evidenced by the number of invalid votes.

The number of older people in work is projected to grow in coming years. This reflects a growing older population, generally driven by increasing life expectancy across all ages.

Women turning 65 in 2013 can expect to live another 23 years, on average; and men turning 65 this year can expect another 21 years of life.

Women receive first JP life member status After years of dedicated community service, two Bay of Plenty Justices of the Peace have been recognised as the region’s first JP life members.

While many think of JPs as respectable people you turn to for witnessing legal documents, or to conduct a wedding service, Bay of Plenty JP Association president Michael O’Neil says all 251 JPs in the region know just how important their service is.

“The new life members Robyn Paterson and Heather Waldron clearly know how vital that role is in serving the community. They have both made major contributions as JPs over the years for the benefit of the wider community, so it was good to recognise their long-standing service as life members.”

Heather has been an active member of the Bay of Plenty association council “for many, many years”, while Robyn – now serving on the judicial bench as a community magistrate – was the first Bay of Plenty member to serve as president of the National JP Association Federation.

The Tauranga women were made the first life members of the Bay of Plenty JP Association when

the group recently celebrated its 75th anniversary, of serving the Western Bay, with national JP federation president Greg Weakes taking part in the milestone.

The women, making up Tauranga Creative Fibre, are now two-time reigning champions in the Bay of Plenty – having won the coveted Wairoa Trophy for the second time in a row.

Every two years, seven Creative Fibre groups across the Bay of Plenty compete for the trophy, with entire clubs contributing to a themed project. This year, each

club was given the theme ‘Explosions of Fibre’ and the Tauranga group’s project reigned supreme.

Club president Joan Hansford-Jensen says it’s exciting to retain the title. “We were thrilled. We won it two years ago…so it was great to win it again.”

The club meets every Monday, 9.30am-2pm, and the second and fourth Thursday evenings of each month, at Tauranga Arts and Crafts Centre on Elizabeth St. Joan says newcomers are welcome, even without experience, as current members are happy to teach them new skills.

Learning to seek help when its needed Q: My husband is in the middle stages of dementia. During the last few months, I have noticed him becoming more resistant to exercise; and with this his falls, and weight, have increased.

How can I encourage him to exercise more?

A: I imagine you probing your husband to exercise more and eat less, is impacting on your relationship too. It’s always difficult being the main carer of a loved one.

But if you have friends or family,

who could help you, I strongly urge you to ask for support.

You could create a roster together, where they can come and take your husband out for a walk. Or even just have him get up and down from his chair 10 times, three times each day – slowly.

The latter is one of the best things to stop falls and build balance.

Getting outside also allows a good dose of vitamin D, which helps to reduce falls.

If you are unable to get friends

or family to help, would he be open to attending a small exercise group? Or is his dementia too far gone?

If so, you may have to consider using an agency like Home Instead to assist you.

Often, an outsider has far more success with a loved one than we do. Should you need to talk through various options available to you, please give our office a call.

Friendly service with a ‘yes’ In the last few years, we’ve travelled extensively in New Zealand without a credit card. If any problems with a pre-book, I send a cheque in the mail, but this is rarely required.

Eight weeks ago, we finished a night flight from Hong Kong to Heathrow and to Edinburgh, arriving somewhat weary at the Avis car rental desk (in our seventies, with accommo-

dation booked 50 miles south of the city).

We were staggered when they refused to give us our booked car, because we had no credit card - in spite of it being booked and paid three months before in NZ. To be quite fair to Avis, the rules were in black and white on the contract and we’d ignored them.

Why? Because we had a gold debit card from a major UK bank and one thousand English pounds, our passports and return flight tickets. But it was a Saturday, and on reading the contract carefully, we realised the real reason appeared to be, sadly, Avis could not trust its staff in non-banking periods.

Writing to the managing director and board in the UK, I’m still awaiting a reply and it took our NZ travel agent about five weeks to get our money back.

Ater being told quite dispassionately by the Avis man he didn’t think anyone else would help us, we ended up at the Europcar desk, where a thoroughly sympathetic and helpful young man put the whole deal on our gold debit card, and provided a virtually new car.

They looked after us equally brilliantly at Heathrow Airport seven weeks later, when we returned it. So for service with a ‘yes’, remember one name well; Europcar.

Overwhelming advice distracting I am beginning to feel overwhelmed by all the warnings being issued during the last few years.

There is not space here to even attempt to list them all.

However, at 74 years, I am not supposed to eat certain foods – next page tells me it is okay.

I should be taking innumerable health supplements.

Once again, some ‘experts’ advise against this.

I am supposed to prepare myself for protection against a tsunami.

Oh dear, this is a real worry.

Compare the number killed in this way in New Zealand to those in vehicle accidents. So now I am convinced I should never drive again.

For my sake, and others, stop

driving us to distraction with all these continual threats of annihilation.I have been near the sea for almost all my life, and I do not need people who sit on their in offices to keep trying to scare me to death.

I am sure this will happen quite naturally in the not too distant future without any outsider’s help.

NZ’s new millionaires can help our sailors Maureen Anderson’s letter ‘Level sailing field needed’ (The Weekend Sun, October 4) was very inspiring and logical. How can New Zealand compete against those US billionaires and space-age technology?

Looking back at those races, Oracle won the first two but was

disqualified, then NZ won the next eight races. Then the US won the final eight.

It looks like it was a case of ‘cat and mouse’ right from the beginning, as the US team was playing with NZ. The US definitely had the faster boat.

Dean Barker and his crew performed an outstanding effort. The NZ Government is already heavily in debt, so they cannot help very much, but those two recent Lotto winners, of $29 and $30 million dollars should donate $10 million each.

Put our environment first

In the recent local body elections, Tauranga was offered two Bay of Plenty Regional Council candidates with science and environmental skills, but elected neither. Although I wonder why Tauranga wants our environment to be cared for by accountants and business managers, that is democracy in action.

Regional council may carry no

financial debt, but it is faced with an enormous ecological debt from decades of environmental mismanagement delivered by the mantra of economic growth at all costs.

Reducing that debt will take a massive and long-term effort, supported and informed by councillors dedicated to putting the environment first.

I would have been such a councillor. I will continue to promote good environmental management in our community, and offer a heartfelt thank you to the 6030 voters, who felt that a ‘green voice’ on council was needed. I look forward to evidence that the new council has heard their message.

No promises but to fulfil duties The Tauranga General constituency gave me a great show of support in electing me so handsomely to the Bay of Plenty Regional Council at the recent local body elections.

The election period was a difficult one for me, as I was the victim of the recent virus that swept Tauranga and ended with me experiencing the delights of pneumonia for the first time.

The timing could not have been worse, as I was unable to participate as much as I would have wished in the debates that lead up to the election.

In the circumstances, I feel very humbled I still managed to poll so well.

Of course, I will do my best to represent the whole region during

my term in office, and in particular the Tauranga constituency to which I am elected.

It would be easy to make promises at the commencement of office.

All I do promise is I will carry out my duties to the best of my ability and without fear of favour.

In the longer term, I wish only to be judged on my performance.

Having lived in Tauranga now for some 10 years, I am excited to have the opportunity to make this wonderful place to live even better.

Census figures are overstated Some sections of the media keep on eulogising an 11 per cent growth in Tauranga’s population fro the recently released Census statistics.

However, that figure relates to the full seven-year period under review by the Census people from 2006 to 2013.

And it represents only 1500 people each year, being a 1.5 per cent annual increase in population - or perhaps even less than this in recent times.

The clear understanding is most of this so-called ‘growth’ occurred between

2006-2010 and in 2012/2013 it was only 0.7 per cent.

So those responsible for the hype are being asked to please stop overstating the significance of the position.

Get your feet back on the ground and face the reality of the situation.

Tauranga, in fact, has no significant growth.

There is no population boom in any meaningful sense of the word; and to say so is quite wrong.

Cutbacks should be for all This week, we have been informed that funding is being cut for Conservation of Kiwis (about $1 million per year).

And a need has been established for a Commissioner for the Elderly (about $3 million).

In the last year, funding has been refused to restore the East Coast Railway( which will serve locals and tourists).

Essential roading in the Wellington area has been curtailed through lack of funding.

Long-suffering Christchurch

residents have lived in substandard homes and received a pittance from the EQC - Earthquake Commission.

And some are still waiting to move ahead; and the pace for government payouts is sluggish in the extreme.

I could go on.

In the meantime, the total of Treaty settlements are approaching $2.5 billion mark and will continue to increase.

Vote Treaty Negotiations (see the document at: www.budget.govt.nz/ budget/2013/by/vote/treneg.htm)

contains a multi-year appropriation of $140 million for the five year period 2013-2017.

This appropriation is for the settlement of historical Treaty claims.

A further provision sets aside millions of dollars for administration (not settlement), of claims under Foreshore and Seabed legislation.

Something is very wrong when essential infrastructure and support systems in all fields affecting all New Zealanders and its fauna are being cut for lack of funding.

Yet monies are endlessly available for Maori in all fields

So Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby’s first step in fixing things in the first 100 days of next year is to announce a possible 10 per cent increase in debt.

I don’t know about anyone else, but as far as I am concerned increasing debt is not a way to fix something during any period of time, let alone 100 days.

Personally, I can’t see the Mayor fixing anything in 100 days, as he has had more 9000 days to

fix things - and things have got progressively worse during the 9000-odd days.

For example, debt of $70 million, increasing during a nine-year period to half a billion.

Further, if he did in some miraculous way fix things in 100 days, I would like to see a detailed report on what he has been doing during his former 9000 days in office.

I’d also ask would he consider refunding, to the council, the

stipend he has been paid for those 9000 days. Isn’t 10 per cent of a half a billion dollars $50 million?

So, in the next three years, the Mayor is already planning to increase our debt by such a massive amount - which at that rate will get to one $1 billion a lot faster than it got to half a billion.

Were Tauranga voters asleep leading up to the local body elections this month?

THE HUNT Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Annika Wedderkopp - Dir: Thomas Vinterberg The darling of many a festival, a film so well-reviewed that it had me waiting on tenterhooks to see it, The Hunt, pairing early Dogme-following director Vinterberg with everybody’s favourite Danish actor, is just as good as advanced world has had it.

Mads Mikkelsen seems to have been popping up in every northern European film since his notable turn in Daniel Craig’s first Bond outing Casino Royale.

He can do everything from tough and nasty to warm and human-

istic and here he is in the latter mode as Lucas, a schoolteacher living a fairly isolated life while battling for the custody of his son. Life seems to be improving for him when he is accused of child abuse. He is innocent (that’s not a spoiler, it’s the main thrust of the film). But in the small close-knit rural community where they live, the adults can’t accept that a child is telling lies, and are soon turning viciously against someone they used to trust.

Vinterberg first came to notice

World War Z is a classic case of best intentions going expensively astray.

Start with a book that is a “new take on zombies”, a fresh analytical approach rendered through survivor diaries. Then strip everything out of the story that made the book fresh and new in the first place.

Because every film needs an ass-kicking hero and less of that boring analytical stuff. So we have another big generic zombie story, the “allegory” this time, since all zombie films are of course allegorical, is something to do with overpopulation. The zombie are the fast kind. Brad kicks ass. Everyone yawns.

Occasionally product placement leaps out of its discreet position in the background of a movie and gleefully throttles everything around it to death.

So it is with The Internship , a two hour commercial for the brilliance of Google which nominally pretends to star Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughan.

They play laid-off salesmen who decide – despite barely knowing how to operate a PC – to win an internship at the aforementioned miraculous and totally wonderful company, largely so they can exclaim regularly about how miraculous and totally wonderful it is. Hilarity does not ensue; everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves.

There's a new superhero on the mean streets of Lowbudgetville, half man, half insect, the result of combining stray radiation with mosquito DNA (from – natch – deadly “Asian Tiger” mosquitoes!). Starring

as a director with Celebration (Festen) in which lurking secrets were scathingly exposed during a family gathering. The Hunt has a similar eye for detail, continually pointing out how easily seemingly civilised, rational people can lose their moral bearings, and how irrational their behaviour can become. This is a brilliant examination of just how thin that veneer of civilisation really is. Very highly recommended, obviously.

no one you've ever heard of, this is the world of Sucker . Clearly inspired by '50s sci-fi horror - think The Incredible Melting Man - it has our tragic hero taking revenge against those who wronged him. A heavily stylised approach tackles the minimal budget head on (there are some surprisingly effective F/X) and the film, while frequently very funny, never stoops to laughing at itself. Rather wonderful, deservedly destined for cultdom.

Stand Up Guys is one of those old-fashioned hood buddy movies that in the day would have starred Peter Falk and probably Alan Arkin. This time round we have the pleasure of a geriatric pairing of Christopher Walken and Al Pacino, the former collecting the latter (who never squealed) after a twenty year jail term. He's there to show him a good time; and to kill Fantastic him before Damn fine morning.

Likeable Not bad at all low-key high Dubious kinks ensue, Dreadful the pair eventually springing Thanks to Video who else but old buddy Ezy Brookfield for Alan Arkin from his rest the DVDs home for one last crack at the glory days. Very sweet.

With Rialto

Beyond the Edge Adventure, a mix of documentary, and dramatic re-enactments follow Kiwi mountaineering great Sir Edmund Hillary’s ascent of Mount Everest.

In 1953, with Tenzing Norgay, the pair became the first to reach the world’s tallest summit.

And Weta Workshop visual effects artist Chad Moffitt makes his front-of-camera debut as Hillary.

The pleasures of travel I've been away for a couple of weeks.

Yep, while normal service has continued here without so much as a blip in the columns, I've been jetting around the world enjoying the pleasures of tropical climes and exotic food.

Sorry. I hate people who do that too.

Getting back is, of course, weird. I always find this when I leave town for more than a few days. You come back - refreshed and invigorated, or knackered and hungover as the case may be – and expect things to have changed. Something. Anything.

“What's happened while I was gone” you expectantly ask people. They look back blankly. Why should

The Too Mu ch anything have happened? Then you realise that nobody has actually realised that you've been away, that your absence has made absolutely no difference to anyone, that, in fact, nothing has happened. Well, that's usually the way.

Not this time.

I come back to happy li'l New Zealand only to find the whole place has gone crazy. Only days after complaining to someone overseas (true story) that New Zealand is so small it can't even raise a decent political sex scandal, what happens but the shenanigans in Auckland?

And as for Tauranga... go away for a fortnight and the place suddenly becomes party central.

Council discontent

Now I know that there was a certain level of discontent about the city council. I know because the group of six irate people who always write letters to The Sun whenever the council is mentioned in any way had recently grown to group of eight irate people. They always seem very worried about debt.

About the council paying its bills, concentrating on core services and not wasting money on frivolities like museums, art galleries, events and anything involving Hairy Maclary or Creative Tauranga. “Throw out the council!” they say. Frequently.

So then there's a council election and what do the good people of Tauranga do? They throw out the council. Magic, eh? Except... ...except, instead of those prudent fiscal types so longed for, the public in their wisdom seem to have voted for the Too Much Fun Party. As a long-time member and supporter I couldn't be chuffeder.

(Disclaimer: as mentioned, I've been out of the country. My information comes exclusively via the Sunlive website. I have not – as far as I'm aware – ever met or talked to these newlyelected representatives.)

There's Steve Morris, who says he has “immediate plans ranging from issues involving the level of mowing in reserves to naming of road issues”. Go Steve! That should sort the city out!

And “firstly he plans to put in place an online record of councillors' voting.

Secondly, he is pushing for a web cam to record during council meetings.” Yeah, because there's such an overwhelming demand to see what happens at council meetings, what with people crowded out in the streets clamouring to watch...

A big welcome

And a big welcome to Clayton Mitchell, who wants to make the city a “little bit more fun”.

“Let’s connect our city,” he says, “and make everything that we do a little bit more fun.” Well there we go! A man after my own heart! Clayton can pop out for cocktails at the Watusi Country Club any time he chooses.

Along with Matt Cowley. Matt says: “We want the city to be known as a great place to host events.”

I bet that just delighted the irate letterwriters group – Tauranga, the fun place that's great to host events. Still, they say the best gifts are the ones you didn't know you even wanted...

Common sense rules

At least common sense still rules in the fiscally prudent approach of new councillor John Robson. He's a man who wants to “put a stake in the ground around the debt issue and around rates rises.” How that fits with the events and the fun is hard to tell. Also, how you put a stake in the ground “around” something is a little tricky to imagine.

He's also the man with a plan for “some form of trust for the councillor salaries to be put into for the next three years” thus instigating a proposed “money back guarantee” on councillors wages.

Seriously?

I'm not exactly holding my breath on that one...

So there we go. The Too Much Fun Party have taken over (except for John).

Expect events. And fun. And some serious action on the level of mowing in reserves.

Celebrating the arts at the Cargo Shed The Arts Market at the Cargo Shed will be celebrating the arts this weekend.

A new exhibition by Tauranga’s woven sculpture artist Vivian Keenen will be on display in the Shed Gallery.

This exhibition is a representation of the different materials that Vivian works with, “in recycled copper, hinaki and quivers in willow and lamps in rattan core and also monofilament [fishing line]”.

Cargo Shed manager Kathy Sass says artists have also been invited to paint on-site “and there will be classes on how to create garden sculptures out of Paverpol [textile hardener]”.

“There are still spaces left in these classes, so come on down on Friday to book your space.”

Kathy says visitors to the shed can make a bracelet or a necklace to their own design in the DIY Beads workspace, “which is now complete”.

The Cargo Shed is now open seven days a week, from 10am- 4pm.

Think of the animals!

It’s coming up to that crazy time of year again.

Normally sane, intelligent people turn into stark raving mad pyromaniacs and celebrate the failed plot of a 400-year-old terrorist by blowing stuff up, burning stuff down, and scaring the daylights out of animals.

A nasty, pointless ritual, it would be better forgotten, or at least focussed on organised displays, rather than the haphazard and random acts of mini terrorism around the streets and backyards of our region.

However, if you MUST play juvenile and pathetic games with fire and gunpowder, at least be sensible around the animals.

Here are a few tips for Guy Fawkes: Feed your pet before the fireworks start, a full stomach makes them sleepy and can help them relax.

• Take them outside for a toilet stop before the fireworks start.

• Have your pet’s favourite toy and their bed ready for them inside.

• Keep pets indoors with curtains pulled and away from any fireworks.

• If your pet wants to hide,

that’s fine - let them.

• Turning on the television or stereo can disguise the sounds of fireworks.

• Try not to reward your dog for being scared, we know it’s hard not to cuddle them, but its best just to be around and ignore any anxious looks, or it can help to distract them.

• If you know your pets will get to upset or will not handle the fireworks, please check some of our calming options below or check with your vets for other options.

• Remember to check your pet is micro-chipped, has a collar and ID tag, just in case they run from your property if they are scared.

• If you have small pets or birds, make sure to partially cover their cages or enclosures with a blanket, especially if they are outside, as this gives them an area that is sound protected.

• Provide your small pets with a little more bedding, so they can burrow into it and feel safe, if they want to.

Or a better idea – don’t buy any fireworks – donate the money you save on them and first aid treatment for burns, to the local SPCA! – Flo.

International delights The Tauranga Regional Multicultural Council is presenting ‘Around the world in 80 dishes’ – a snapshot into the culture, art and cuisine of nine different nationalities, beginning this weekend.

Running from Saturday, October 26, to November 3, at 52 Devonport Rd – the mouth-watering exhibition offers visitors a chance to explore and learn about one of each participating countries’ signature dishes, and their ways of life in the home and kitchen.

There is also an opportunity to learn even more about a particular country, with one day dedicated to each nationality during the event.

The dedicated days will include cooking demonstrations at about midday (before 2pm), giving visitors the chance to taste or buy the dishes.

Organiser Ewa Fenn invites everyone to enjoy the special occasion, saying it’s a great way to get to know other cultures now living in Tauranga.

“We have such a multicultural society in New Zealand, and it’s becoming more and more that way in Tauranga also – which is great.

“Our exhibition will showcase everyday life in these countries, and on display are some of the items used in the home and kitchen.”

This includes traditional costumes, art, tableware, recipes, utensils, and pots and pans – some of which are very old, says Ewa. The stands will be manned by representatives of different ethnic groups across the city, and will feature nine countries: Poland, Italy, South Africa, India, Solomon Islands, Japan, Philippines, Thailand and Korea. Signature dishes will include Polish crepes and South African bobotie.

The first of accumulations sea lettuce for the season have already been picked up from the foreshores at Kulim and Ferguson parks.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council works with Tauranga City Council to clear it from high-use public areas to reduce the odour nuisance it can create.

BOPRC Tauranga Harbour programme co-ordinator Bruce Gardner is not expecting a big sea lettuce season this year.

“Sea lettuce is a naturally occurring algae. Its growth is much higher in years with an El Nino weather pattern.”

The regional council has been working hard to find long-term sustainable solutions for collecting and disposing of sea lettuce.

“It can be expensive if the collected sea lettuce has to be taken to landfill for disposal, so we’re trying hard to find a productive use for it,” says Bruce. “We want to turn this nuisance into a resource. We’re very fortunate that local company Revital has agreed to take all of this season’s sea lettuce collection for compost manufacture.”

Bruce says the regional council has been exploring the viability of using sea lettuce for stock food, biogas production; and as mulch on orchards and home gardens.

Waste reduction through compaction and de-watering has also been investigated.

“The most promising research so far has been the garden and orchard mulch option. There are some challenges around salinity, so it won’t be appropriate for all crops. Spinach and capsicum plants did well, but care needs to be taken to avoid build-up of salt and heavy metals in the soil.”

Knowing where and who to ask In this internet age, information is so freely available you could almost drown in it. And some of the information is contradictory.

So where do you go for quick, impartial and free advice?

I often end up at Councils’ front desks. It doesn’t matter if it’s Tauranga City, or Western Bay District Council. Both offer incredibly efficient helpful staff manning property file and planning stations.

Recently I stood in line and as you do, overheard a heated conversation between a ratepayer and a staff member. After going around in circles the steady staff member assured the agitated enquirer what action and time frame this action would take. Then it was straight into the next query and I shuffled forward to await my turn.

Yes, you must pay a nominal fee to get a property file but to get a quick snapshot and answer to a specific query there’s no place better to ask than at the front desk for free advice.

Your real estate agent has a basic understanding of each property they list. But much of the information comes from the vendor and quite often the vendor’s knowledge has holes in it.

I spent 45 minutes with two council staff members trying to sort out a ‘where to from here’ situation. I have a property that has long been established on a site in reality, but not on paper. That’s right, the council file showed a big fat nothing.

It seems it’s nothing more than a myth about a fire in the WBOP District Council records office in the 1970s, and yes there was fire at the Mount office in 1983, but Council advises that prior to the 1970s no permit was required. Information held in the file on properties was on an ‘ad hoc’ basis and due to not having mass storage, some records were dumped to make way for new documents.

Once again Council planning staff were really helpful with planning for the future.

If you are in due diligence phase the Council front desk is a great place to start.

When things go wrong ‘Sorry’ can be a hard word to say. It can also be difficult to wait for it when we feel it should be said, or to know how to respond when it is said.

It’s not so hard to forgive a little child who breaks a favourite vase by mistake. But how do we forgive if a drunk driver, who has killed a loved one? In between these extremes, are the misunderstandings and disappointments of everyday living.

Much of our learning happens through making mistakes, whether it’s a failed class exam, or a broken relationship. Without a second chance, we are doomed to be haunted by every failure. And without the generosity of spirit, families and communities, we remain forever fragmented. However, with some grace, or forgiveness, there is the possibility of moving forward. Forgiveness does not have to mean forgetting, condoning a wrong, or agreeing across opposing and deeply-held principles. But it can mean treating another with respect, giving them benefit of the doubt, and not assuming we know what another is thinking.

How healing it can be when others welcome us, even if we have let them down. As Christians, we find ourselves trusting in the forgiving love of God as the basis for our community living. St Paul wrote: “So reach out and welcome one another... Jesus did it; now you do it”. (Romans 15:7, The Message).

That’s a challenge – and we all need God’s grace to live it out.

Using money the right way Our Local Body Elections have come and gone – until next time. One ousted Councillor described his and others’ failure to get back in as a “tsunami of discontent”. People seem to be saying it was the debt issue that drove the change.

It got me thinking…about money. As surprised as some might be, the church doesn’t always think and talk about it.

But we do know money is an incredible tool and can accomplish amazing things.

Imagine what we could do for our families if we had more money.

Too often we are limited because we don’t have enough. Too often we’re limited because we don’t have the right attitude and the right actions towards our money – especially what we think others should do with it.

Money has a great ability to bless, influence, and make a difference.

Money, as Kevin Gerald says, is “A dominion certificate”.

Money says to land – I can own you.

Money says to vision – I can fulfil you.

Money says to needs – I can meet you.

Money says to those bills – I can cancel you out. Money says to education – I can put you through university. Money says to retirement – I can set you up sufficiently. Money says to diseases – I can cure you. Money says to low-income housing – I can build you.

In fact, we need money for all those things.

So it is understandable we want to do many of these admirable things, and sometimes we borrow money to do that.

The problem is when that level of debt becomes unmanageable. That’s true in business and personal.

A mortgage can be a good thing and the only way we’ll get into the market.

But when servicing that mortgage puts undue pressure on the necessities of life, maybe it’s not such a good decision.

Let’s be wise with our money – at all levels – so our families are free to grow into mature fiscally savvy men and women, who by our example will have enough to make a difference to their lives and those around them.
