Charles Darwin was right It’s not the water that drowns you. It’s your clothes.

Darwin’s theory about natural selection continues to march on relentlessly, sorting the population into those who have the nous to keep themselves alive, from those who don’t.

There have been some most unfortunate tragedies this year and some clearly demonstrate Darwin was right. Even when people are warned of danger, there are some who just carry on regardless and some pay the ultimate price.

Sure, there will always be genuine accidents; those unforeseeable mishaps that occur that couldn’t reasonably have been expected. Collisions with whales or bits of Rena; gear failure on even the most well-maintained vessels; Hori BOP secretly stows away in your bow; medical cases; lightning strikes, to name a few. Even the case of the Japanese fishing trawler sunk by a falling cow*.

Those are accidents.

But some cases are people just asking for trouble.

No amount of warnings from the do-gooders in society will be enough to make these people stop and think.

They continue to go out in boats without lifejackets; swim in surf beyond their capabilities; a similar attitude to those who drive reckless/ drunk/too fast/in shit cars/without seatbelts, or a combination of all those.

Remember years ago, it used to be “swimming in jeans” that claimed the lives of many. We don’t hear of that so often these days, but the same thread of stupidity flounders on.

The tragedy is heightened however, when they take out innocent people, who HAVE thought about consequences. People who try to keep themselves safe but are at the mercy of the non-thinkers or those who just

don’t care whether their actions cost lives – theirs or others. Sometimes, people trying to go to their assistance.

In the case of some recent boating tragedies, no amount of legislation is going to save some people. Make lifejackets compulsory? Who is going to police that? A lifejacket monitor at every boat ramp, riverside, beach or lake? Whatever happened to taking personal responsibility?

One of the factors that many boaties fail to understand is it’s not the water that drowns you in winter. It’s your clothes. You can fall out of a boat in summer in your shorts, tee shirt and jandals and probably keep yourself afloat for hours.

Do we teach this in schools? It should be compulsory. It used to be an activity at Scouts and Guides and the kayak club.

Extra kilos

It’s a wonder there aren’t more shooters lost when you see and hear the stories. I’ve seen countless numbers of duckshooters climb into their overloaded dinghies wearing polar fleece, camo gear, oilskins, woolly jumpers and boots – complete with a couple of kilograms of shot shells around their waists and in pockets.

One bunch this year were doing fine in their punt until a larger boat roared up the river, swamping their dinghy and landing them, and all their gear including a new shotgun, into the Waikato.

It’s not just the occasional boaters or the newbies though, who get into trouble. A few years ago a well-seasoned ocean sailor, with multiple Pacific voyages under his keel, had the most life-threatening event of his life just five minutes from the marina. He was knocked overboard, in his wet weather gear, after an accidental gybe. He could not move his arms and legs and by the time the yacht was turned around, he was barely able to breathe as his jacket with some air trapped in it, floated up around his head. They had trouble getting him back aboard, he was so exhausted from simply trying to keep his head above water.

The story was later found to be a hoax, but it’s still a great yarn: In 1997, the crew of a Japanese fishing boat was pulled from the Sea of Japan after clinging to the boat’s wreckage for several hours. They were immediately arrested, however, after authorities interrogated them about the boat’s fate. To a man, they claimed a cow had fallen from the sky, apparently coming from nowhere, and struck the boat amidships, resulting in a huge hole and its rapid sinking. The crew remained in prison for several weeks until Japanese authorities were contacted by several highly embarrassed Russian air force officials. It turned out that the crew of a Russian cargo plane had stolen a cow that wandered near their Siberian airfield and forced it onto their plane before they took off for a flight home. Once airborne, the cow apparently panicked and starting rampaging through the cargo hold, causing the crew also to panic because it was affecting the plane’s stability. They solved the problem by shoving the cow out of the hold while crossing the Sea of Japan at 30,000 feet.

Council reconsiders marine precinct The city council’s marine precinct decision this week shows behind the scenes talks have been continuing since councillors first knocked back an attempt to get council financially involved in February.

This week’s development sees the council asking for interested parties to step up and take on the costs of ground testing the former Baigents site in Mirrielees Road.

It’s expected to cost $30,000$50,000. A council debate on spending the unbudgeted amount was sidestepped at the last minute by councillor Bill Faulkner, who moved the council ask the community for the money.

“There have been some expressions of interest in funding

that,” says Bill.

“The CEO and others have received a number of inquiries.

This is designed to bring them out of the woodwork, and we can weigh up see what the best deal is for marine industry and this council, and that’s what this will do.”

The proposal gives interested parties three weeks to come up with deal, and 90 days to action it.

The proposal is to construct a hard standing for a 300 tonne travel lift to replace the 600 tonne slip that was removed to make way for the second harbour bridge, seven years ago. The hardstanding area will have to take quite a bit of weight, and geotechnical studies have not been done on the former sawmill site.

The council has also changed its stance on tenure, with discussion at Monday’s council meeting revealing the council is now

prepared to sell some of the land to move things along.

If the private sector puts up the money for the geotechnical studies, the council will then explore all options in terms of land ownership, says Larry Baldock.

“No-one’s going to buy it and then put in millions for a travel lift. We are trying to find a process where by selling some of the land we will be able to put in the infrastructure that we need. We are really trying to get his thing over the line with at least cost to us,” says Larry.

“Council’s role in this about facilitation, about creating, hopefully a resurrecting an industry this city has been renowned for.”

Couple celebrate platinum anniversary Eric and Joyce McGarva say the secret to their marriage is taking one day at a time.

And it would appear they’re right – the couple is celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on Sunday.

Married on May 27, 1942, Eric and Joyce have four children, 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

But it wasn’t love at first sight.

“It just grew and grew,” says Eric.

“I had two or three boys with their tickets on me,” says Joyce.

“I thought he was good-looking and a caring, unselfish person.”

Joyce and Eric shared a passion for dancing and spent many nights together at community dances.

“We were mad on dancing,” says Eric.

As their marriage progressed, the couple also shared harder times –

living in a garage with two children for nine months while they built their home.

“She was my first mate,” says Eric.

Today, Eric, 94, and Joyce, 91, say their marriage has been pretty easy, with arguments few and far between.

“We didn’t believe we’d get to 70 years – but it’s happened,” says Eric.

He says Joyce doesn’t make him special treats like she used to.

“I used to get some lovely cream puffs.”

They live in a house in Mount Maunganui where they enjoy gardening and spending time with their many relatives.

They’re looking forward to celebrating their platinum anniversary with a luncheon on Sunday.

“I know it’s a big achievement – but I hate a fuss,” says Joyce.

Tauranga man a model citizen Ray Butcher, 86-year-old railway enthusiast, is a local member of the Tauranga Model Railway Club and has constructed eight different model railways over the last 13 years.

Ray says he has been interested in trains since he was still a kid in school. He says he joined the TMR about 14 years ago and began building his own models.

Of the eight models Ray has built he has sold two.

He says the first model he built was less than two metres long and could fold up like a suite case. He sold it to a retired farmer in Hamilton. The second model he sold was a model he built for and sold to the TMR. Ray has been constructing models for his great grandchildren and is currently working on the fifth model for his newest grandson.

He has spent the last ten years constructing a four and a half metre model railway in his carport. He has constructed it in a way that he can separate the pieces and put in a cabinet on the wall so his car will still fit in the carport. Ray has constructed the landscape for his model using some household items such as broom-bristles for trees and pot scrubbers for bushes. Some things in his model he purchased form a hobby store.

“With most [models] you never finish,” says Ray. In the ten years he has been working on this model he says he has changed his mind on the design, pulled up the track, and re-arranged the layout.

Though he says he thinks he is almost done working on this particular model.

Most 17-year-old kids think themselves untouchable.

But Year 13 Tauranga Boys’ College student Carlos Savage almost literally is.

The hot-stepping youngster with the perfect wrestling name became the youngest member of the New Zealand Men’s Touch Blacks late last year and has his sights set on amending the sport’s natural order.

He was part of the New Zealand men’s team that went down 3-0 to Australia in the 2012 Trans-Tasman Test Series in late April, and didn’t like the way that felt.

“The Aussies play all year round, and my coach reckons they play at the same pace for the whole game,” he says.

“We have all the skills though. I think we will get them sooner or later.”

Carlos wasn’t in the team when Australia bet New Zealand for the Touch World Cup in 2011, but his sister Awhina Savage played for the open mixed team.

Carlos, who has his sights set on the 2015 showpiece event, began playing the sport in Palmerston North at the age of five and graduated through the Manawatu age-groups before shifting to the

Bay of Plenty.

And while the 2015 event looms large in his thinking, there are other important contests to compete in the meantime.

Thousands of Rugby Channel viewers across the country will see him run out on home turf for Tauranga Boys’ 1st XV against Rotorua on June 9, and there is also another series against Australia next March to prepare for.

There is also the small matter of completing his course through Tauranga Dive Zone, which will see make him a fully-qualified dive instructor by the end of next year.

At one with the brush

Te Puke man Steven Clark freely admits that he cannot read or write. But man can he paint.

Steven, who is autistic, has been painting typically New Zealand scenes for more than 20 years and is about to embark on a new stage in his development.

The 41-year-old, who lived on Waiheke Island before moving to the Bay, aims to open a gallery at his home in the coming weeks.

His work is already in demand – last year he sold a painting entitled ‘Deep South’ to a private collector for $7000.

Steven, who can spend more than two weeks on a painting, also has plans to exhibit his work throughout the region.

“At some stage I might put some in Tauranga, Whakatane and Rotorua, just to spread them around a bit.”

He loves to paint landscapes, mountains, sunsets, waves, animals and clear water, and believes

the Bay’s scenery provides him with superior scenes to paint than are available in the Auckland area.

Previously, he had loved to paint the bays on the north side of Waiheke Island, but for him, the island has somewhat lost its charm.

“It’s not quite the same now – it’s a bit of a shame.”

He hopes to turn his attention to painting in the South Island soon and describes the surrounds of Arrowtown and Lake Wanaka as beautiful, cosy spots. By Ben Guild

Harvesting nature’s bounty With the autumn fruit harvest season in full swing, the call is going out for people to share their spare produce with the Tauranga Community Fruit Project.

The project coordinates the picking and collection of excess home-grown fruit from Western Bay of Plenty residents and donates the fruit to food banks and charity organisations.

The community project, which started three years ago, has just been relaunched for autumn harvest. New coordinators Jenni Werth and Ailie Rundle are looking to boost the Tauranga network and want to hear from anyone with fruit to donate, from volunteers to collect or deliver, and from organisations interested in donated fruit.

Ailie Rundle says the focus is all on making full use of nature’s bounty by redistributing fruit which goes to waste because residents simply can’t get through it all, or are unable to manage the picking.

She is encouraging people to get involved and drop off their own or neighbour’s fruit directly to their nearby food bank or other worthy recipient or to a drop-off point (see below).

“We would also like to hear from any organisations other than the food banks that could use the fruit, such as preschools, schools, rest homes or community centres.”

“When I started I took kiwifruit down to the Home of Compassion in Island Bay and we picked up carrots if we came back via Ohakune, or if we went via Hawke’s Bay I would pick up apples.”

de Paul across the Western Bay and up to Waihi and Paeroa, with occasional trips across to the Waikato.

Mount band doing the deed Mount band The Deeds are launching their debut album ‘The Evidence’ at a gig at the Mauao Performing Arts Centre today.

Described as a mix of dub reggae, alternative and indie rock and consisting of nine original tracks, the album highlights the band’s ability to bring together various musical styles.

The four piece band, comprising vocalist/guitarist Damon Innes, drummer Nick Ririnui, guitarist Marcel Stannard and bassist Adam Mani Sharplin, have been playing together for more than a decade.

The album was inspired by family, friends and Bay musicians they have worked alongside such as Huia Hamon, Aaron Saxon, Hani Totorewa, Yuto Fujiwara, Jana Pihama and Steve (Captain) Dickson.

Gallery ‘corrects’ council In this “Community Spirit” we explain the duties of a TCAL lifeguard and why they are so important to your comfort, safety and enjoyment at our facilities.

A lifeguard’s day typically starts at 5.00am with the first duty being to test (and if necessary, adjust) the chemical levels in the water to ensure it is safe for the public to enter at 6am.

Pool plant checks and daily set-up are next and include: Filter and pump pressure/vacuum readings Bore flow readings Temperatures Balance tank level checks Toilets and changeroom checks Daily float count for tills.

Once the facilities are open, the lifeguard’s primary responsibility is pool supervision and customer safety.

Our lifeguards work in rotation, ensuring that all aquatic supervision standards are being met at all times, but that’s not all they are required to do.

Often while one or two lifeguards are poolside, another is taking care of plant checks, facility cleanliness checks, and they’re responsible for the 2 to 3 hourly pool water quality tests (checking pH and chlorine levels). In addition, chemical controllers and dosing pumps are checked and adjusted regularly to ensure pool water tests are balanced, ensuring the pools are clean and comfortable for swimmers.

Lastly, our lifeguards are the public face of TCAL within each facility– so in addition to their specialist training in pool and water safety, they also provide the first point of contact for our swimmers and guests.

Future discussions over Tauranga City Art Gallery Trust finances are likely to be held in private after the council was forced to concede to the gallery this week.

Councillors annoyed that the gallery’s statement of intent shows it operating in deficit since the council stopped inflation adjusting the annual grant, in March ordered the SOI rejigged to make it more ‘sustainable’.

Instead of reworking the figures, trust chairman Graeme Horsley rammed them down the council’s collective throat on Monday.

“You have asked us to run a public art gallery, we have always achieved our target of raising at least 20 per cent of the revenue, but you are not prepared to deliver on your share of the partnership and appropriately fund us to meet your share of escalating costs,” stated Graeme.

The Tauranga Art Gallery Trust is a CCO with the responsibility of operating a public art gallery in partnership with Tauranga City Council.

The gallery trust was established when the council agreed to provide an equity advance to complete the gallery, and inflation adjusted operational funding in considera-

tion for taking control of the largely community funded gallery. The council involvement in the gallery also contributes to TCC meeting its cultural responsibilities under the Local Government Act. The council stopped inflation adjusting the annual funding in 2010.

Since then operating cost increases are above the rate of inflation, while economic uncertainty and domestic crises have severely impacted upon discretionary spending and donations.

The Tauranga Art Gallery, which is regarded as one of the country’s most significant regional galleries, receives $847,400 each year from the council.

For the 2012/13 financial year the gallery is expecting a $7192 deficit.

Next year it is $24,943 and $43,050 the year after.

If the council grant was inflation adjusted it would be $928,361 for the 2012/13 year, putting the gallery in surplus on its current plan, similarly for the following years.

The gallery is, in fact, making money under director Penelope Jackson, but the income from exhibitions is difficult to forecast and Graeme refuses to guestimate it.

“We are simply not prepared to report ‘blue sky’ income just to balance the books.”

E hoa ma, one of the great things about a Parliamentary recess is having the opportunity to get out and about the electorate and really get a feel for the initiatives that are happening. MPs are usually tied up in Wellington for around 36 weeks of the year and the weeks back in the electorate, spread throughout the year, are vital to ensure we are grounded in the issues and priorities for our people throughout the rohe.

Let me mention a few of the events I visited. I had the opportunity of joining the prizegiving for Computers in Homes graduates which is run by Computers in Homes Bay of Plenty. This project basically teaches supports parents in learning how to use a computer alongside of their tamariki. It is fantastic to see the intergenerational learning going on as each family member starts to appreciate the sheer scale of the world wide web. The hook up, the computer itself and tuition are all organised and it is an effort to allow parents to assist their tamariki with school work, while obviously opening up a whole new world to parents.

So congratulations to all of the parents and students of Te Kura a Iwi o Te Matai in Te Puke.

Submissions are over – what next?

On Wednesday, at the Long Term Plan submissions, I was accused by a councillor of saying nice things about the council.

I admit that I am often judgmental over some council decisions but, even then, I do try to suggest ways of minimising damage from their unwise decisions. The 451 page LTP document was widely attacked because very few were able to read or understand it. I did eventually recognise that the layout and content of the document had been prescribed by the Government. Apparently it used fewer words than the last plan and had more pictures, but it was still too big and too late. I have to admit I wouldn’t have liked the task of assembling the beast and I had to compliment the CEO on the day.

Youth plan for our future Our young people are our future.

The world they will live in depends partly on what we do now to shape the world of the future, and partly on how well they are equipped to deal with the challenges they will face.

Every year, Bay of Plenty Regional Council hosts Youth Jam - an annual youth event for Bay of Plenty secondary students to foster environmental awareness, youth leadership and participation in civic issues. All secondary schools in the region are invited. Last year we had more than 50 students attend from around the Bay who explored transport, Rotorua Lakes, economic development, and Tauranga Harbour. A delegation from Youth Jam presented the group’s recommendations to council prior to drafting the current draft Ten Year Plan.

This year’s event is being held this week and student delegations from Katikati, Tauranga Girls’, Papamoa, Kawerau and Edgecumbe colleges, and Western Heights and Whakatane high schools will be attending.

This will free up an average of $43 million in each of the next four years to lift teacher quality and achievement in schools.

In health and education, we’re making savings so we can invest more into frontline services.

Community newspapers going strong Community newspapers in New Zealand are in a strong position, with Nielsen Research showing 2.25 million people over the age of 15 years read a community newspaper in the last seven days.

That was the message received by the Community Newspapers Association at its 53rd annual conference held in Dunedin last week.

CNA president John Spring says it’s a

great statistic and shows how valuable community newspapers are to their communities.

“Competition for people’s attention and entertainment is tough these days but community newspapers are still strong because of their relevance to their readers and advertisers.”

The association is also looking strong and has been remodelled to make it more affordable to members to join and to ensure it is able to be an efficient and workable body for the benefit of its members. The annual conference and awards will continue to be the focus of

the association.

CNA is made up of about 42 mainly independent owned newspapers throughout NZ, with a combined circulation of about 810,000 copies.

On again, off again, on again The on again, off again Marine Precinct project got yet another kick start at the full council meeting this week.

The marine industry in Tauranga had a 600 tonne slipway facility at Sulphur Point up until about seven years ago. This capital intensive facility had been built by the then Harbour Board in the late sixties to service their tugs and other vessels.

When they weren’t using it, other vessels did. It never produced a return on capital as was the nature of local government in those days.

And still is today! The 600 tonne slip was demolished to make way for the second harbour bridge and with its demise went a facility that catered for larger (over 35 tonnes) vessels like trawlers through to super yachts.

Council/ratepayers own the waterfront property from Mission Cemetery to Sanford’s fish plant and there is opportunity to put in a new facility, facilitated by council but paid for by the private sector. Expressions of interest are being called for, with a three week window to respond. A successful application would then have three months to work up details before proceeding with an agreed proposal.

Council will now entertain all options, including selling the land, but will be looking to ensure that the local marine industry gets ongoing advantage from it. There is a caveat on the land title precluding residential development and there are existing tenancies. Council had considered selling off other property to help fund a new facility but this failed when a vote was taken, with two elected members absent, 5-4. Property sales if/when made should pay down debt, was the very creditable assertion. So it’s interesting that this argument is applied only when it suits and on other occasions it’s okay to run up more debt.

Upgrade overspend Disappointing news on the ongoing upgrade of the northern and southern car park reclamations down town. A taskforce of

and Murray Guy went further and indicated they would support reinstatement of automatic CPI increase on the ratepayer subsidy of around $850,000 to help them out. I note that this week there was a move afoot at the Auckland Art Gallery to scale back the director’s role and put more focus on making money, which was “met with gasps of horror in a small but powerful group of arts patrons”.

Spend deliberation Larry Baldock, Terry Molloy, Tony Christiansen and Bill Grainger are tasked with recommending to Projects and Monitoring (which comprises all elected members) what is to happen. So it was surprising to receive news that there had been an overspend of $141,000 in the 2011-12 Waterfront Project budget. Larry said it was much needed work that would mean the area wouldn’t have to be done later when a budget would be available. So on a vote of 10-1 (the one being me) the 2012-13 budget was reduced by $49,000 and the remaining $92,000 taken from Transportation and Open Space budget. I voted against on principle that the processes and mechanisms put in place to stop budget overruns had not been adhered to. This sort of overrun was supposed to be a thing of the past.

Sustainable art

The Statement of Intent for the Art Gallery was also confirmed, unaltered, from a previous council meeting where it was referred back to the Art Gallery Board of Directors requesting that the Art Gallery “demonstrates a clear pathway of financial sustainability”. Chairman Graeme Horsley socked it to council/ratepayers in a 4 and a ½ page dissertation. Basically the sticking point is that depreciation on the building is required by the Local Government Act to be cash funded. That seems unnecessary as a well maintained building should increase in value. David Stewart expressed his reluctance to approve a forward budget showing deficit and suggested dialogue to arrive at a solution. I agreed but on a vote of 9-2 the unaltered SOI was approved. Next week council will be deliberating on its annual/three year/10 year plan and central government is telling councils to keep rates to the level of inflation. That’s what most of Tauranga’s elected members say, when it crops up, but then vote more expense when that crops up too. Just how this all works will be decided next week. I mean, pay for this, pay for that, hold rates? Something is missing here. No increases for councillors pay this year from the Government Remuneration Authority but the Mayor goes up by $4600 to $136,700. Deputy Mayor remains at $84,232.66, chairman $81,226.15, and councillors $74,171.15. Mayor Stuart Crosby said he wouldn’t be seeking a replacement to the mayoral car (Honda Accord) and would be providing his own car. The annual running cost is $17,915 which included $6780 depreciation and $4780 fringe benefit tax. For formal occasions City Hall rents flash cars. This doesn’t happen often.

Up to scratch

Some Baywave Gym equipment will be replaced/upgraded at a cost of $286,283. This is funded out of the depreciation account.

Baywave/TCAL accounting figures are confidential but I can say that the gym contributes significantly to reducing ratepayer subsidy to the aquatic network. Baywave Gym (Clubfit) is focusing on retention of members and improving service to them and in the face of a yet to be decided future direction for TCAL, it is prudent to keep the business up to scratch.

Top guitarists to perform Four of New Zealand’s finest guitarists have joined forces and are heading for the Bay.

The New Zealand Guitar Quartet will perform at Mills Reef Winery on May 27.

The New Zealand Guitar Quartet, comprising Owen Moriarty, Jane Curry, Christopher Hill and Cheryl Grice-Watterson will perform works by Boccherini, Bach, Utting, de Falla, Assad, Krouse and Rimsky Korsakov at Mills Reef Winery and Restaurant on Sunday, May 27.

All members have gained acclaim as soloists on concert stages around the world and in a multitude of international guitar competitions.

Now all in residence in Wellington, they are each contributing their individual strengths towards an exciting, dynamic and engaging repertoire with the quartet.

Jane completed a Doctorate in Musical Arts at the University of Arizona and is head of classical guitar at the New Zealand School of Music.

Owen Moriarty completed his Masters in 2003 at Massey University and headed to the US for further study. He has done multiple tours both nationally and internationally as a soloist and chamber musician.

Christopher Hill completed his Honours degree at Victoria University in 2001 and travelled to Spain to study flamenco guitar giving performances in Italy and Portugal. Cheryl Grice-Watterson won a scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music aged just 16 years, and also travelled to London to receive tuition from John Williams.

Calling all Mount rugby club old boys A call to unite is going out to Mount Maunganui Rugby Club old boys to attend a full slate of matches next month.

The club is holding a golden oldies day at Blake Park on June 9 in the hope of drawing past members back to the club.

Club captain Greg Boughtwood says the hunt is on for former players, administrators, coaches and juniors.

“The club has kept some pretty poor records over the years,” says Greg.

“What we are trying to do is attract some of those people back.”

The day will begin with registration from 11.30am-12pm, followed by a sit-down lunch with a guest speaker until the day’s first games start at 1pm.

The kick-off for clashes between Mount Maunganui Colts and Whakarewarewa, and Mount Maunganui Senior A and

Matakana Island, will be at 1pm.

The showdown between the home club and Tauranga Sports will begin at 2.45pm.

Greg says the battle of the bridge is a rivalry built over many years, which has been pretty close of late.

“It always runs pretty close – both teams are dependent on the number of Steamers players that are available.”

A number of players on the fringe of Steamers selection will also be on show.

Merivale community leader efforts win award Merivale Community Centre head Graham Cameron has been awarded the Robert Anderson Memorial Award by Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby.

Stuart praised Graham’s work at the community centre in the last four years, during which time an early intervention programme pre-emptively addressing community issues had been established.

Fly boy remembers From front cover

Stewart is just one of the many admirers of the reassembled A-4K Skyhawk at Classic Flyers aviation museum on permanent loan from the RNZAF. The A-4K Skyhawk is one of nine aircraft to be donated to museums around the country following the decommissioning of the fleet.

It arrived in Tauranga on Monday from the Woodburne Air Base in Blenheim and has since been reassembled in a newly created display area in the museum’s hanger.

Stewart fell in love with flying while growing up on the South Island’s west coast, and joined the RNZAF at the age of 18.

As the Commanding Officer of the 14 Squadron, CO of 75 Squadron and CO of the RNZAF Ohakea Air base, Stewart is well experienced in the Skyhawk aircraft.

“I did the first course they had in New Zealand when the aircraft arrived from the United States in 1970.

“They were used in support of the army, stopping supplies, stopping attacking ships and also self-defence capabilities for air attacks.

“It is a very small aircraft, very nimble and good to fly, can carry a lot of weight and fuel.”

For Stewart, one of the toughest moments came during the Exercise Vanguard 16 on July 12, 1973 in Singapore, where he was forced to manually land the Skyhawk that is now at Classic Flyers without electrics.

“I had suffered a Constant Speed Unit failure which led to a lot of electrical problems during the last leg of the deployment from Bali.

“As a result, I had to land after the rest of the formation with a badly-out-of trim aircraft, in manual control, and with complete electrics gone from midway down the landing roll. I had

to shut the engine down and be towed in.

“All I wanted to do was get out of my flight gear and have a

drink.” Stewart retired from the RNZAF in Tauranga at the age of 55 and is thrilled the Bay now has a Skyhawk of its own.

“For this area it is going to be

great. It is a real success story and is on the calendar for most tourists coming through the region.”

Students create snazzy brand

Their mothers may be doing the sewing, but these students are the brains behind Otumoetai College’s hottest line of clothing.

Original Threads is the unique clothing brand created by six Year 13 students as part of New Zealand’s Young Enterprise Scheme.

They are one of seven groups within the school taking part in the scheme, competing for a place at this year’s national Young Enterprise awards in Wellington – won by having the most innovative business concept in the region and selling the most products.

Original Threads’ managing director Nikki Meadows says while creating their own business is really fun, it’s amazing how much time goes into their products.

“It’s a lot of hard work.

“Making the outfits is ridiculously hard because none of us can actually sew.

“We had to get lots of mums and other people helping.”

The group has just finished making about 20 outfits, which are being sold on their Facebook page for $30 or less.

Nikki says every item they design is unique and one-of-a-kind so their customers can have one-off pieces.

Their clothes are made by taking new plain t-shirts or singlets and sewing patterns onto them. The patterns are made out of anything from old jeans to funky fabrics.

Nikki says anyone can purchase their items from their Facebook page.

“We want to show Tauranga how much hard work us students are capable of.”

Making music to a different beat Move over Kimbra - pupils at Mount Maunganui Primary School have an audience with one of the New Zealand’s most widely toured and acclaimed bands at the Orkney Road school today.

As part of the school’s music week teacher Dylan Parry wanted to excite his students about music with a performance that struck a chord.

“Kids aren’t really into music so much – with a lot of musicians that come in the kids get turned off.

So we thought let’s do something really different that’s really going to engage the children.”

To capture their attention Dylan has organised for fourpiece group the Trons to perform, a group of musicians made from “bits of old

meccano and old machinery” playing drums, keyboard and guitars.

“I think the kids are going to expect these robots walking around, but they are actually more a mechanical band. They look like industrial robots that assemble things in a factory that are actually playing instruments.”

Band creator Greg Locke of Hamilton built the Trons originally in 2008 for the Hamilton Fringe Festival, making all band members from junk and salvaged electronics.

“It had been an idea I had had for ages, from playing in normal bands and getting annoyed at band members leaving. I didn’t really know if it would work, and I was just going to build a drummer to start with, but it seemed to go OK so went on and built the whole band.”

The band has toured twice in Europe, has put out an album and is a hit on You Tube.

“This is the first time they will have played the Mount though, so we are all really looking forward to it.”

I’m gradually getting the hang of this retrieving thing, after another exciting outing into the wilds with the boss and Uncle.

The penny has finally dropped that all this stick fetching I’ve been doing is actually practice for my real calling – duck recovery. It took a few practice runs until one evening, watching some of the seasoned professionals, I’m finally getting my teeth into some floating feathers and bringing home dinner.

A bit of a bonus this week was a bird with bling. One of these ducks had a bracelet around its ankle. Not sure if it was breaching home detention or had been watching too much of the reality TV series ‘Pimp my Mallard’ but this old geezer was well equipped.

I checked for piercings and tats too, in case he was seriously into body art, but the only piercings were the ones caused by high speed steel from the 12 gauge.

The good people at Fish & Game had fitted the birdie bling, putting bands on some ducks to trace their movements, from tagging to harvest. It was exciting to hear more about our bird and it’s good to help in management of the duck resource.

In the meantime Mr Mallard was to join us for dinner - dressed for the occasion.

Then we get news from Fish & Game that bird 27-51465 is a pretty old duck. And we’re not talking about the mother-in-law. Our bird is the earliest tagged mallard ever returned!

So now the boss, who gets a hard time from his mates about only being able to shoot the young and stupid, can claim to be able to nail the old and wily!

We’re just not sure if a bird banded 11 years ago will be particularly tender. The cook might be better sticking with the young and stupid!

Tsunami sirens - testing 1, 2, 3 Don’t be surprised if you hear the sounds of sirens next Friday.

But these won’t be for real just yet!

Kordia (a technology company) is one of two companies that have been shortlisted for Tauranga City Council’s tsunami sirens project.

Next Friday, June 1, they will be testing a totally new siren for New Zealand use. The sirens they are testing will make a sound quite distinct from the usual fire or ambulance siren. They will also have the ability, if required, to carry voice messages. Marshall Day (acoustics specialists) will be providing independent sound testing.

The other shortlisted company is promoting a meerkat siren system which does not need testing since it is already installed in a number of places around New Zealand.

The two sirens to be tested will be mounted on hydraulic arms (mounted on vans - like in the photo) in the area between Kokomo Key and Longview Drive.

Residents closest to the sirens have been sent letters providing details of the tests and suggesting they keep pets indoors if they are close to the siren source.

Anyone who wants to hear the tests is invited to head into the testing zone between 9.30am and 12pm on June 1 (or June 5 if the testing needs to be postponed for some reason).

Luv Boat - soon they’ll be making another run Natalie and Noel on board Crew Cut.

Luv Boat 11 proprietors Noel and Natalie are celebrating the completion of a 16 month project refurbishing and re launching the 50 year old, 23 foot yacht ‘Crew Cut’.

Noel’s been working tirelessly on the extensive refit over the last 16 months and helming Luv Boat 11 on Tauranga Harbour in his ‘spare’ time.

Noel and Natalie operate ‘The Spirit’, (Luv Boat 11) throughout the year.

‘The Spirit’ is a cosy boat and well suited to winter trips. Noel and Natalie also plan to sail Crew Cut during the winter months.

“We hope to sail further afield in our retirement,” says Natalie. “That’s why we brought ‘Crew Cut’ and now she’s ready to go sailing again.”

The couple circumnavigated the world in ‘Kyrie’ a 43ft yacht Noel built in Christchurch in the 1970s, so look forward to a new challenge in a much smaller yacht.

Noel’s restored the interior of ‘Crew Cut’ adding a new marine oven and an engine. He has also redesigned the underwater profile to a more efficient and modern trend and reinstated the original cutter rig.

The colour scheme is also close to Dennis Lobb’s original, says Noel

– apart from the yellow cabin and barber-shop striped mast.

“Dennis Lobb, the builder of ‘Crew Cut’ learned of Noel’s restoration through an article in Waterline Magazine last year”, says Natalie.

The Australian resident is planning a return to New Zealand and is going to call on the Reeves for a look at his old boat. He has been in constant contact with Noel by visiting http://www.

Crew Cut is a John Hacker 23, one of six boats built to that design in New Plymouth in the early 60s.Crewcut is a well-known in the sailing fraternity of the 60’s as Dennis had monthly articles in ‘Sea Spray’ during his Pacific cruise adventures.

Noel’s put the original home port on Crew Cut’s stern and intends to register her there, when he sails her offshore.

“Dennis was really touched when he saw New Plymouth on the stern,” says Noel.

Carpentry group well placed for industry resurgence The carpentry group at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is all set to support the future of New Zealand’s construction industry, with initiatives occurring at national level, informing staff and programme development.

The Productivity Partnership, review of qualifications and the new builders’ licensing scheme are all intended to provide quality, increase efficiencies and support the economic recovery long awaited in the

construction industry.

The Polytechnic’s carpentry group leader Brian Dillon says the carpentry team are well placed to support these initiatives.

Settling office temperature disputes

Anyone who shares a living or working space with others will likely be all too familiar with the endless battle over room temperature.

Everyone’s different; while some feel the cold, others overheat easily and finding the perfect temperature that suits everyone is seemingly impossible.

However, science might be able to settle the argument in your office.

Studies have found that indoor temperatures can have a major impact on productivity, and the high performance zone actually lies between 22ºC and 25ºC.Temperatures under 17ºC and over 28ºC cause productivity to drop, significantly, impacting the ability to work.

The results of a temperature change can actually be very dramatic. According to a study conducted by Cornell

University, when the temperature of an office is at 25ºC, workers were ‘keyboarding’ 100% of the time with just a 10% error rate. When the temperature of the working environment was dropped to 20ºC, the workers spent only 54% of the time keyboarding, with a 25% error rate.

In the home, scientists suggest that the ideal temperature lies between 20°C and 24°C, and should not drop below 18°C. When it comes to bedtime, 20ºC suits most, keeping your temperature at the best level for quality REM (rapid eye movement).

The optimum temperature will come down to personal preference – it’s noted that those with a larger body mass may feel hotter than others - and a bit of trial and error is necessary.

But next time someone complains about the temperature, at least you’ve got some facts to back up your argument.

Tauranga June rainfalls 1898-2011

Rainfalls for the month of June have been recorded in Tauranga since 1898 (except for 1904, 1907, 1908, and 1909).

The graph shows the range of rainfalls from an extreme high of 381mm in 1925 to a low of 19mm in 1906. The second wettest June was 1920, when 309mm was

recorded, and the second driest June was in 1959 when only 27mm fell.

The long-term average rainfall for Tauranga for June is 131mm.

The graph of the June rainfall shows ‘normal’ variations form year to year. There is a small decrease in the overall

of January, February, April, and May for the same periods, which also show small decreases in the overall rainfalls during the last 100 years, compared with a small increase in the March rainfalls. Since 1898, there have been 16 June months with a rainfall

Curtain call on winter chills Tired, faded, thin or frayed when it comes to curtains that have seen better days, Tauranga Curtain Bank will take them all.

The Curtain Bank, which was set up 18 months ago, aims to keep homes and families warmer in winter months by re-using and reconditioning old curtains that would otherwise be thrown away.

More than 65 families have received curtains since the Tauranga Curtain Bank began distributing curtains in February 2011.

Curtain Bank coordinator Louise Maple says the response has been positive, and she is expecting an increase in referrals as the weather starts to turn colder.

“We’re always grateful for all donations of curtains we receive and the team will reline them or fix them in any way required to provide the best insulation possible.”

The programme is run by Energy Options, a community-owned not for profit organisation that promotes healthier and warmer homes in the Bay of Plenty and East Coast. It aims to help households cut energy wastage, maximise benefits of available heating and reduce the amount of money spent on heating.

The curtains are made available through community, health, and social agencies which give vouchers to households they know meet the need.

The Curtain Bank receives donations of new or used curtains and curtain material. The curtains are then distributed to referred recipients.

Safe down lighting A recent case in Papamoa where an overheating light bulb almost caused a house fire was a reminder of the fire hazard associated with some light bulbs, says Energy Mad’s Bay of Plenty consultant Garry McKane.

Firefighters were called to the Papamoa property two weeks ago after residents were awakened by the sound of a light bulb smashing after it had overheated. Fortunately there was no damage to the house, but

firefighters discovered the ceiling insulation encroached on the minimum distance to the light and contributed to the overheating.

Garry says because incandescent and halogen down lights only use five per cent of their power to make light, the remaining 95 per cent becomes heat – which can become a major fire hazard.

“The fittings for these lights can become very hot – 250 degrees Celsius for the standard and up to 370 degrees for halogens, so you can imagine that’s an absolutely crazy heat in the ceiling.”

How energy efficient is your future home?

When buying a home, it’s easy to get caught up in the colour scheme, the outdoor living area or kitchen; while the structure’s energy efficiency is often overlooked.

Paying attention to energy efficiency when sussing out a house could save you money, your health and ensure your comfort down the track. It should really be the first item on your checklist.

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) Energywise campaign offers some common sense tips to help you sort the cosy from the cold.

Check out the insulation situation It’s estimated that nearly 50% of New Zealand homes don’t have enough ceiling and/or underfloor insulation. You can check both easily – to see if there is any there, if it’s thick enough, if it’s dry and looks as though it has been installed properly.

What type of heating system does the home currently have?

EECA suggests clean, effective forms of heating

include some heat pumps, modern wood or wood pellet burners and good flued gas heaters.

Does the home feel or look damp?

If it smells musty, or you can see water stains on the walls or ceiling, it’s likely the home isn’t healthy, or energy efficient. However, the cause of these issues can be rectified.

How big are the windows, and which direction do they face?

Large windows should face the north to soak up lots of sun and keep the house warm, with small windows on the east and west sides, and minimal windows on the south.

Are the appliances energy efficient?

The home may already be fitted with things like a fridge or clothes washer – and it’s important to check that these are not old or worn, and still in good working condition.

can take the fight to Hunt. With a car all ready to go, Campbell also completed a night test over the weekend as the Dunedin-based event starts with three stages under the cover of darkness.

“It was really good to get that monkey off our backs (winning at Wairarapa), so now we will be looking to repeat that at Otago,” says Campbell. “It will be good to fight with Ben as I know I’m going faster, so I can’t wait.”

Rally Otago gets underway with a ceremonial start in Dunedin’s Octagon on Friday night before contesting three special stages. Saturday sees a further seven gravel special stages north of Dunedin before the infamous tarmac street stage to round out the opening leg. Day two sees a further six special stages, including stage 14 which offers NZRC bonus points as the power stage, before the ceremonial finish at the Dunedin Railway station at 4.35pm.

Attention those in their 30s, 40s and 50s Ensure you are able to spend your future wealth doing things you want to do and living the life you deserve.

So often the case is, as the saying goes “so many people spend their health gaining wealth, and then have to spend their wealth to regain their health”.

And in some cases, people don’t get to spend their wealth on anything in later life because their poor health has compromised their ability to do the things they want to.

I see all sorts of different people during my working week, and I learned a long time ago that age is simply a number that tells me how many years a person has existed on this planet. Knowing a person’s age tells me nothing about them, their health, their abilities and in fact it is dangerous to assume such things based on your knowledge

of a person’s age.

I am no longer surprised when a person in their 30s turns up on my doorstep with pre-diabetes and numerous heart disease risk factors. I am saddened, but not particularly surprised. Being young does not make a person invincible. In turn, I am not surprised to meet a person in their 70s who is fit, active and with an appearance younger than their age suggests. It is always a pleasure to meet these people, whose care of themselves in their younger days have made them able and active in their latter years. I use these healthy older role models to council the younger clients that come through my door – and by younger I mean 30s, 40s and 50s.

As an example, to a 40 something male who is leading a high stress lifestyle, is a regular social drinker and cannot find the time for exercise in his week, I say: “Do you still want to be able to take your boat out fishing when you

are 75? Do you still want to be able to balance yourself comfortably on that boat when you take it out when you are 75? When you get home from fishing, do you still want to be able to have the energy to sit around with your friends and family enjoying the fruits of your fishing trip? If the answer to these questions is yes, then you have to start working on that now because it’s what you do in your younger years that makes all the difference in your older years.”

Being able to go fishing is one example of a simple desire for an older person. Yet fishing requires that a person be well, relatively fit and capable of mind and body.

It might be that you still want to be travelling the world when you are 75, or that you want to still be walking up Mauao when you are 75, or you might even just want to be able to chase your grandkids around the park without effort.

Whatever your desires are for your older age, you put yourself in a better position to be able to achieve them if you make an effort while you are still young. Don’t spend your life working to make money, while your health declines.

Pink breakfast proves popular A Bethlehem Country Club pink ribbon breakfast fundraiser raised more than $1000 for breast cancer support services.

Organiser Pam Cotterill, who was only expecting about 30 people to participate, says 100 residents of the village attended.

The breakfast – hosted amid a sea of pink – consisted of cornflakes, yoghurt, champagne, bacon and eggs. A village pianist entertained during the event.

Social workers with belief Strong interest in a new Bachelor of Social Work has prompted Bethlehem Tertiary Institute to offer a second stream in July with possible plans for more students.

The institute’s head of operational services Wendy Pyne says management was “extremely encouraged” by the interest in the course since it was officially approved before Christmas.

“We’ve had a great response from all over the country – we’ve got quite a few students taking it here along with others from all over who are using our flexible delivery programme.”

She believes the course is attracting particularly strong interest because it was the first Christian-focussed social work degree offered nationally.

Wendy says despite having the course officially approved only two months prior to starting they had to turn students away, so decided to offer another stream in the second semester and will look at increasing its student numbers if interest continues to grow.

“Increasing our intake is definitely something that we will consider if the numbers hold up.”

The degree course has been developed over the past four years with input from faith-based social agencies – including

Open Home Foundation, the Salvation Army and Te Aroha Noa (Palmerston North) which they have formed a strategic partnership with.

BTI Associate Dean Richard Cook says it is important to be working in partnership with agencies so that learning is connected with experience.

“We have these ongoing partnerships so that not only will people come from these agencies to work with our students, but our students will also go and work with them.”

Bringing lunch to you Dazz Switalla runs his own lunch delivery service, Another Green World.

He provides a quick and easy yet healthy lunch option, with people placing their orders via the internet. Customers can order their choice from a healthy lunch selection of salads, a few pies and desserts.

As the winter season is upon us, Dazz is also adding a couple of soups to his menu.

Dazz is the chef for No. 1 The Stand and rents the kitchen on week days for Another Green World. He has been a chef for 35 years.

“Cooking is just something I like doing,” says Dazz.

Another Green World is a healthy food option, but it is also an environmentally friendly option. Once food is ordered it is delivered by bicycle, therefore avoiding the use of gasoline and the

production of carbon. Even the bicycle itself is environmentally friendly - it is made from recycled materials; parts from two bikes and a satellite dish. Dazz says it was a neighbourhood project to design the bike so it could carry soup.

“Basically the idea was to get something to carry the soup without soup going everywhere. So the logistics were a little hard.”

He says the bike has an arm on the back with rubber suspension that holds the box which carries the food.

When someone places an order through the website, Dazz receives the order on his smart phone and off he goes.

There is between a 20 and 30 minute timeframe for delivery, and the service is pay on

Rustic lamb meatball, cannellini bean and tomato Serves six Ingredients 1 can of cannellini beans, drained 2 cans of chopped tomatoes 1 green capsicum, chopped into strips ½ large red onion, chopped finely 1 & 1/2 large red onions, chopped into thin strips 3 cloves garlic, chopped 150 grams pepperoni salami, cut into strips

1 heaped teaspoon smoked paprika 2 teaspoons dried oregano 2 tablespoons chopped Italian parsley 2 litres water or stock 500 grams lamb mince 50 grams grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 cup lemon juice 2 tablespoons olive oil salt and pepper ¼ cup fine polenta

Method Mix the lamb mince with the lemon juice, 1tablespoon of olive oil, the Parmesan cheese, 1 clove of the chopped garlic, the half a fine chopped onion, 1 teaspoon of oregano, and one tablespoon of chopped parsley. Season well with salt and pepper. Cover and allow the flavours to absorb for about an hour.

While waiting, in a heavy pot saute the remaining onion, salami strips, capsicum and garlic in olive oil. Add paprika and the rest of herbs once

the mixture is cooked, then add the tomatoes and the stock or water.

Bring to the boil then simmer for half an hour. Drain off any liquid from lamb mix. Add fine polenta and roll into small balls and bake in the oven at around 180 degrees Celsius for 15-20 minutes.

Add the drained cannellini beans to the pot, stirring from time to time to prevent from sticking. Add the meatballs and adjust the seasoning by adding extra herbs and Parmesan if required.

One pot wonders Many years ago before the family sat down to dinner, the question was often asked about what was for dinner.

Invariably my father would often reply that there were parts of a pigs anatomy and treacle, or Hungarian goulash for dinner. We always knew that this was not the case, however sometimes there was a one pot wonder loosely called an Irish stew or Hungarian goulash: braised cubes of beef and vegetables cooked slowly for several hours in the trusty old pressure cooker.

Conversations with children and their parents, around their parent’s lives, are always very difficult. The roles have changed somewhat.

There are all the feelings associated with losing control over your independence, being treated as a child, and essentially ‘role reversal’.

‘Idle’ hands go to work The public perception of the life of a retiree is a complete fantasy.

The word ‘retirement’ itself generally conjures up visions of the elderly idling away their time with feet up, surrounded by grandchildren and all the trappings of sound investments.

But Volunteer WBOP manager Margaret Butler regards these notions as startling misconceptions.

She says retirement can take place once a person has turned 65, but adds these days that is not the norm.

“First of all, throw away the belief that retirees are over the proverbial hill, or that they have already expended their best years slaving away for some nameless organisation.

“Most retirees are very active and in good physical shape after 65.”

Strong argument for correct version of the Treaty Peter Day may not be entirely correct in stating that the English version of the Treaty of Waitangi used by the Waitangi Tribunal in 1975, is a correct version of the one signed by Governor Hobson.

There is a strong argument with equally strong evidence, that the true original Treaty draft written in English by Hobson and then translated into Maori, is actually the ‘Littlewood Treaty’ which was found in 1989, and was confirmed to be written in the handwriting of James Busby by Phil Parkenson on 2 October 2000.

The ‘Littlewood Treaty’ is unlike the English draft used by the Waitangi Tribunal, because it mirrors Te Tiriti o Waitangi when translated into it.

Like Te Tiriti o Waitangi, which was signed by the Chiefs, the Littlewood Treaty, does not have the words ‘forest and fisheries’, only ‘lands, settlements and all their property’, and contains the words brian@thesun.co.nz Fax 07 571 1116

“and all the people of New Zealand,” which explains why Hobson, after each Chief had signed, shook him by the hand and said: “He iwi tahi tatou - We are now one Nation”.

The English version seized by the Waitangi Tribunal in 1975 is the pompous floral version compiled by Freeman to be sent to the British Parliament.

In 1840 there was a signing of the Treaty at Waikato Heads on 11 and 26 of April.

At Waikato Heads, there was an overflow of chiefs wanting to place their signatures and there was not enough room for these signatures on the CMS printed version of the Tiriti o Waitangi.

Freemans version - intended for British Parliament eyes only - was used to record these signatures only.

Here is a quote from Hobson which expresses the Tiriti was the only Treaty intended as our country’s founding

document. “The treaty which forms the base of all my proceedings was signed at Waitangi on the 6 February 1840, by 52 chiefs, 26 of whom were of the federation, and formed a majority of those who signed the Declaration of Independence.

This instrument I consider to be de facto the treaty, and all signatures that are subsequently obtained are merely testimonials of adherence to the terms of that original document”. (Buick, 1914 ; Palmer 2008).

To cover all the points that support the Littlewood Treaty as the official translation of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi would require extensive volume of explanation which is beyond the scope of this response.

I recommend people read the book about the Littlewood Treaty or google ‘Littlewood Treaty’ on the internet. It is very interesting. P. Putt, Papamoa.

Dey’s letter a ‘discredited line of thinking’ Peter Dey’s letter defending “Treaty Settlements’ continues a discredited line of thinking. With Maori estimating a 50% ownership of the New Zealand economy from an asset base around $40 billion and ‘settlements’ valued up to half a $billion each, the idea they cost only 1% of government expenditure is a concept best left to the Lombard/Bridgecorp school of creative accounting. If you were to give your house to your neighbour along with $1000 cash would you state that this has only cost you $1000? As to the notion that settlements result in only a small proportion of ‘stolen land returned’, the letter from D Holm illustrates one aspect that undermines the foundation of this attitude. I suggest also reading Ian Wishart’s “The Great Divide”, just the latest in a long line of publications that expose the fraudulent nature and content of rewritten history of the last 30 years that the

Treaty Industry relies on.

When Mr Dey states that past settlements were ‘grossly unfair’ he slanders the people who negotiated them, sometimes up to 3 times over many generations. Thus Maori become at best, fools and those on the other side, immoral. This goes against historical accounts from all walks of life that show in general, all peoples had integrity and Maori were clever and resourceful.

If the arrogant notion that somehow this time it has been ‘done right’ is correct then why are tribes like Tainui now looking for an

additional half $billion top up to their last ‘Full and Final settlement’ of the 1990’s?

Perhaps the worst aspect is the loss of resources that previously supported all the peoples of the country. Non- Maori now rely on a vastly reduced asset base while their taxes must still support all including Maori. Tribes on the other hand place the acquired assets into trusts that provide little if any revenue back to the country’s books. A example of this is in Northland where tribes were gifted hundreds of $millions of fisheries resources on the understanding their youth would be trained into the industry. Instead, foreign vessels are licensed to fish the resource and the money swells tribal coffers.

TECT transparency Govt shoots self in foot

TECT decision making operates behind closed doors allowing Trustees to make poor decisions which waste millions of dollars - without scrutiny.

BOP Trustpower customers are given the responsibility to choose TECT Trustees every 2 years, but you are not given an opportunity to assess individual Trustee’s: decision making, contribution, and performance.

Over the last 4 years, I regularly advocated recording TECT meetings and making the audio recordings public but I am out-voted 5 to 1. I am happy for you to listen to my performance at TECT meetings – there is a reason why the other TECT Trustees will not allow you to listen to their performance.

In fact, the 5 TECT Trustees who resist transparency are so concerned you might get access to information on their decision making, they recently wasted thousands of dollars of TECT money on lawyers’ fees unsuccessfully trying to increase the cloud of secrecy at TECT. Lack of transparency allows self-interest and selfpreservation to take precedence over what is best for our community. Your wallets, your community and your life styles will continue to suffer for the benefit of a select few if you do not vote for change.

Bring back capital punishment

With the spate of murders, assaults, over the past 20 years or so in New Zealand, I and many other folk would recommend bringing back Capital Punishment with our burgeoning human population now over seven billion, it is simple maths to know that more people equals more crime. Prisons worldwide are full of criminals amounting to hundreds of thousands and many for murder one. They are a liability to taxpayers, who keep them housed, clothed and fed, along with the huge number of prison staff etc, and building’s maintenance.

How often have recidivists committed another crime of murder or murders when they are released?

Most judges are too soft with decisions. DNA, fingerprints and admissions by the accused are proof for Capital Punishment.

Pity about this National Government – they started off quite well but have now shot themselves in the foot.

Firstly they have voted themselves Perks for Life. In the same week they raised the cost of prescriptions to $5. Now when you are healthy and wealthy this is of course a pittance.

However when you are old and need numerous medications it becomes just an added burden. Another thing in the same week Support Net has cut my hours from two and a half a week to one hour a fortnight.

This is an insult!

Incentives for teachers

If you are a teacher who is doing this because you care for, and about children, you will not need an incentive payment.

If you need an incentive payment to encourage you to be educating a group of children, then you should not have been there in the first place.

As for the uproar relating to the slight increase in class/pupil numbers; get real.

In the 1960s I had a class of 55 primary children in a prefab, and I successfully coped with that situation, as was borne out of accolades from the parents of those children, in particular twin eight year old boys who had learning problems.

I know times have changed, but I wonder sometimes, if this means are we really going forward?

There is no need for council’s to sell assets to raise local body funds.

Why should far example 55,000 ratepayers in Tauranga pay to give all Tauranga residents the rights to the use of the infrastructures and amenities that exist in Tauranga? Everyone working and on the dole and benefits pays taxes to central govt to run the country. Now why can’t every taxpayer pay a tax to support local bodies?

I see it as almost criminal that I and others are almost rated out of our houses and yet a family or group of mates in rented house pay nothing.

There could be say eight people living in a house and all working and only the landlord pays rates who doesn’t use any of the amenities provided to that house.

Auckland has the same problem with

500,000 ratepayers and nearly two million people live there. Where is the fairness in that one has to ask ?

The poor old ratepayer not only has to pay for the running of the city he/ she has to pay for the stupidity that abounds in local bodies in NZ. Look at Auckland where some idiot decided it was okay to put in corrugated iron storm water drains. Obviously iron will rust and the corrugations will cause turbulence and slow the flow of water through those drains, really the head idiot in NZ gave the OK for such drains to be put in place.

Ratepayers in NZ really need to be more discerning in who they vote for, especially in the larger centres like Tauranga.

Copyright debate

In the meantime I’ve been keeping an eye on the ever-simmering online copyright debate in New Zealand.

I’ve been trying to follow how things are going for illegal downloaders and the ISPs (Internet Service Providers) tasked with sending out threatening letters should various copyright holders - large corporate music and movie types - decide that someone has been grabbing stuff without paying for it.

And the news from New Zealand is fairly quiet.

There were letters sent out last November and some more since. It hasn’t been widely reported and so far no-one seems to have got close to the possible $NZ15,000 fine that can accompany the third of these cease and desist letters (should it then proceed to a court).

I was interested in comments by Donald Clark - a former head of the government broadband network company Reannz, and a former advisor to the Prime Minister – who analysed University of Waikato research that shows sophisticated internet users have simply switched the way they download material, using software and services that cover their tracks.

“It’s hard to escape the conclusion that people sharing copyrighted material have simply switched mechanisms,” Mr Clark concludes.

“I suspect that there has been little net change in the sharing of copyrighted material.”

No real surprises there then. The smart money was always on the fact that anyone who was good at downloading a whole pile of stuff would also be good at covering their tracks should needs be.

New Zealand’s law took effect last April despite a UN report that concluded disconnecting internet users “regardless of the justification provided” is a violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights because it limits the type of media individu-

als are allowed to use to express themselves.

(By the way, The Labour party – at the time – promised to repeal the “termination clause”.)

Of course nothing compares to the American approach, where one wonders if corporate interests wield a little more influence on the law and how it is applied.

Illegal download

Just yesterday the Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal of a university student who was fined $US675,000 for illegally downloading and sharing 30 songs. That’s $US22,500 per song. A federal judge apparently called the penalty unconstitutionally

excessive and reduced it to $67,000, but the record companies appealed and the First US Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated it.

There does, in fact, seem to be a certain legal lack of clarity in the States as to what constitutes fair punishment.

Take the case of Jammie Thomas-Rasset.

That was the first file-sharing copyright infringement lawsuit in the United States brought by major record labels to be tried before a jury. After declining a settlement offer of $US5,000, the defendant, ThomasRasset, was found liable in a 2007 trial for infringing copyright on 24 songs and ordered to pay $US222,000 in

statutory damages. The court later granted her motion for a new trial because of an error in its jury instructions.

In a second trial in 2009, before which she again declined a settlement offer (this time for $US25,000), a jury again found against Thomas-Rasset, awarding $US1,920,000 in statutory damages, a sum that was later reduced to $US54,000. The record labels refused to accept the reduced award, so a third trial solely to determine damages was held in November 2010, resulting in a jury award of $US1.5 million against Thomas-Rasset.

In July 2011, the court again reduced the $US1.5 million jury award to $US54,000; or $US2,250 per song. The record labels’ appeal against this decision goes before the courts next month.

All that for 24 songs.

Last October, 3000 native trees were planted in the wetlands as part of the Living Legends programme, as 83,000 trees were planted across 17 planting events nationwide.

The planting will once again be dedicated to Bay of Plenty rugby legend Hika Reid, with the likes of Wayne Shelford, Sir Colin Meads, Christian Cullen and Sir Brian Lochore involved in plantings around the country.

There are a further 45,000 trees to plant this year, with the final target of 170,000 trees expected to be planted by the end of 2015.

The Kaituna wetland is a significant conservation initiative, including flaxes, pukeko, ducks, shags and pied stilts.

Local schools and the widercommunity have been involved in the planting of defined areas and a kayak trail has been established.

The planting will take place from 9am at the Kaituna Wetland, Pah Rd, Te Puke, on August 25.

Fantastic Not bad at all Dreadful

Dir: David Fincher - Starring: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer American remakes of good European films do not enjoy a high reputation. I struggle to think of one that is an improvement. Until now. Some may disagree, but I think David Fincher’s take on Stieg Larsson’s book blows the Swedish (made-for television) film out of the water.

I’m assuming by now that anyone interested will probably be familiar with the plot (which upon second viewing comes into focus as one massive red herring). So why The opening jokey history lesson, à la L.A. Confidential, along with similarly ironic intertitles, makes Staten Island hard to figure tonally - is it a crime drama or a deadpan comedy? Vincent D’Onofrio’s ambitious minor mob boss lives with his mother and is trying to break the world record for breathing underwater; Ethan Hawkes’ dumb septic tank cleaner wants a baby, preferably a genetically-modified one; and Seymour Cassel’s delightful old deaf mute deli-owner wants to free his business from mobsters. It’s a classy quirky piece, told as three separate interconnecting stories which eventually collide - very unpredictable and oddly likeable.

In Route Irish the war in Iraq moves to the mean street of Liverpool. Security contractor Fergus has returned home for the funeral of best friend Frankie, killed on the deadly titular stretch of road between Baghdad airport and the Green Zone. But, as Fergus questions official accounts of the killing and his suspicions deepen, dark forces emerge to stop him. A contender for the Palm D’Or at Cannes, this blending of director Ken Loach’s signature social realism with a satisfyingly complex thriller plot leaves a vivid

ent, more believable Lisbeth Salander (the eponymous “heroine”).

Noomi Rapace was stunning in the Swedish film but her character was in danger of slipping into cartoon territory, almost a wish-fulfilment creation.

Mara is more damaged and more real.

It’s a brilliant film. And I haven’t even mentioned the credit sequence. Since Se7en,

do I find this version so superior? Small things first: the supporting cast – Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright, the magnificent Christopher Plummer – are better. The cinematography and music are stunning and, as they should, provide extra layers of tension and complexity to the story. And the story itself is better told, giving more weight to certain areas and better integrating the two central characters.

But, most of all, Rooney Mara is a differ-

impression of the flawed but very human lives damaged by aftershocks of war.

The signs were good: an R18 warning for horror, violence, sex scenes and offensive language; cover quotes that said “bizarre” and “destined for cultdom”. So what happened to Bad Meat ? Plotwise, teen delinquents are sent to the isolated Hardway Camp where the abusive councillors are rejects from some killer hillbilly flick. Then the staff get a food poisoning virus (hence the title) and it all gets yucky, in a badly made low budget way. The final half hour is a mess of badly orchestrated blood, vomit and flesh-eating. This is actually 10 minutes shorter than the cover advertises – perhaps they cut out the good bits…

Popular fair returns to Beach The annual Waihi Beach Art and Craft Fair is back for its seventh year, and is said to be the best fair from Coromandel to Te Puke.

The fair is on Sunday June 3, 10am to 4pm, and is fully booked with 75 stalls, including many new stallholders.

Crafts featured include Alpaca products, cards, preserves, quilts, art, handbags, glass jewellery, collectors’ bears and dolls, flax items, greenstone, New Zealand native timber items, jewellery

Plenty of goodies are lined up for The Waihi Beach Art and Craft Fair. salted garlic products, bags, teddy bear making lavender goodies, knitted accessories, recycled denim creations, olive oil items, beads, children’s books, and more. products, smoked and Local artist ‘Jude’ will again be on site to sketch portraits, and airbrush temporary tattoos will also be returning to the fair, along with other local artists and their work.

The Waihi Beach Lioness Club will be running a cafe at the fair.

Entry costs $3 for adults and is free for children under 12.

Club puts its jubilee stamp on city Tauranga and District Stamp Club will celebrate its 50th jubilee at Baycourt during Queen’s Birthday weekend.

A special postage stamp has been produced to celebrate the occasion, featuring Tauranga’s old Post Office building in Willow St, with a limited number available along with a first day cover also featuring the old building.

New Zealand Post has also produced a special cancellation for the event, which club members expect to be very collectable items.

committee, who collects iconic children’s stamps including Tin Tin and Thomas the Tank Engine, says the joy many people feel by collecting stamps can be traced back to their formative years.

“Most of us start when we are kids. I was seven or eight when I started, but gave up when I got halfway through college,” says Dave.

“I picked it back up when my kids showed interest, and kept on – that’s a pretty typical story really.”

Pink ribbon day at Classic Flyers Classic Flyers is giving people the opportunity to donate to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation with a Pink Ribbon muffin and coffee special this Sunday.

May is Pink Ribbon Breakfast campaign month, run by the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

Classic Flyers’ Diane Jeffery says she saw an ad on TV with Rachel Hunter, which instructed people to go to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation’s website.

“What they’re doing is encouraging people around New Zealand to meet up together and have breakfast, and to donate money to the Pink Ribbon Breakfast campaign.

“We didn’t have time to do a breakfast, so what we are doing is a muffin plus a small coffee deal.”

Concert will spark happy memories Music is all about emotion and when our memories are involved, music allows us to conjure up a place and a time in our lives which rekindles memories that words just cannot describe.

Under the baton of accomplished composer/conductor, Mal Brady, Bay of Plenty Symphonia will take you on that journey of memories when they perform their Ryman Healthcare Showtime concert series this weekend at Baycourt.

Spectacular achievements Mal’s musical achievements are many and varied, the most recent being his spectacular stage show, ‘Colourful Soul’.

The symphonia commences the concert with selections from Les Miserables. Also included are selections from My Fair Lady, The Toreadors’ March from Carmen and highlights from West Side Story.

Guest soloist, mezzo soprano, Anna Hawkins will enchant you with her glorious voice singing, amongst others, O Mio Babbino Caro, Rusalka (Song to the Moon) and I Dreamed a Dream and guest violinist, Amelia Hawkins will enthral audiences when she plays Sarasate’s showpiece, Introduction et Tarantelle.

Extra treat

Audiences are in for an extra treat when Margaret McClymont plays Tauranga city’s Wurlitzer organ for 20 minutes prior to each performance and for a short while at interval, beginning at 7pm on Saturday night and 1.30pm on Sunday.

The Wurlitzer, built in 1926 in New York State, was originally installed in the de Luxe Theatre in Wellington in 1927 and because of its small dimensions, is perfectly suited to Baycourt.

It was gifted to the city by the 20,000 Club, was installed in the old Town Hall in 1972 and relocated to Baycourt in 1988.

Showtime will not only rekindle your memories of stage and screen, but will also create new memories for all concert-goers.

commanded, praying behind closed doors.

Then, in a moment, everything changed.

The words of Jesus came true, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) Supernatural power changed these fearful people in an instant. The power was so great, that it drew thousands of people, from all over Jerusalem, who had heard the commotion and wanted to discover what was happening.

The disciples shared their experiences

with those who had gathered. The power of God was so great that at least 3000 people were convicted firstly of their sins, and then that Jesus really was the promised Messiah!

They believed, repented and joined the disciples in sharing the Good News with everyone. The Church was born!

Disciples have continued the work down through the ages, not always as wisely or as truthfully as Jesus commanded, but usually because of their love for God and His creation. I pray that everyone will come to know the truth and love of God as He longs for us to do.

Forgiven all, forgive all Paul says in Ephesians 4:32 that we are to “forgive one another, as God in Christ forgave you”.

Literally, forgive one another just as, or even as, or in like manner as God in Christ forgave you.

Our reason or motive for forgiving others is that we are those who are recipients of forgiveness. We are those who have been forgiven much, not because of anything of our own merit but because Christ was the perfect sacrifice for sin. As those who are recipients of forgiveness, as those who have been forgiven much, we have no right whatsoever to withhold forgiveness from those who have sinned against us.

In this statement about forgiveness, Paul says, “As

God in Christ forgave you” - past tense because God has forgiven us in Christ.

Paul writes in Colossians 2:13–14; “And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by cancelling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This He set aside, nailing it to the cross.”

If we came to salvation in Christ through genuine repentance, we have been forgiven every sin that we committed before we were born again.

Even though our sin was red as scarlet, Jesus paid the price for our sin and in Him we are made white as snow.

The blood of Jesus doesn’t cover our sin. His blood washes away the sin of those who come to God in repentance and God removes that sin as far as the east is from the west and He calls it to remembrance no more. Which is the reason also that we are to forgive and to forget because we are to “forgive one another, as God in Christ forgave you”.

Respected preacher and writer Dr Martyn Lloyd–Jones makes these comments: “Foolish people who misunderstand Christianity are saying today that they refuse to see any wrong in people at all. That is not Christianity, that is make-believe!

Certain people, says Paul, have done wrong to you! Forgive them! He does not say: pretend that they have done nothing; that is not forgiveness.

Forgiveness is realising to the full extent the wrong they have done, and then forgiving them.

It means forgetting also and we are to forgive and forget readily and freely.”

Isaiah 53:5–6 says of Jesus: “But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned-every one-to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”

That’s how we are forgiven! God Himself took our sin and placed it on His Son. Our sin was punished in Christ so that in Christ we might be forgiven. If God has done that for us, how can we choose to refuse forgiveness towards anyone else? We have no right to do so.
